The NWS needs real-time reports of hail size, wind damage, flash flooding, heavy rain, tornadoes, and waterspouts to effectively warn the public of inclement weather. Even as new technology allows the NWS to issue

warnings with more lead time, spotters are needed as links between radar indications of severe weather and ground truth. Storm Spotter volunteers serve as severe weather spotters for the NWS and local emergency management programs, and generally have two things in common - an interest in the weather and a desire to serve their community. Two sessions available; you need only attend one. Completion results in being a Certified Storm Spotter. Free to DOD-affiliated personnel 18 and above (base access credentials required to attend). Fightertown Fun Fact

Silver Eagles: A History of Honor

By Lance Cpl. Jonah Lovy Staff Writer Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort has been home to many squadrons since its activation in 1943. Originally designated as a naval air station, Fightertown became an official Marine Corps installation in 1960. Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115 has been stationed at Beaufort since 1977 and has a long history of faithful service to the Marine Corps. The squadron was first organized as VMF-115 in July 1943 in Santa Barbara, Calif., under the command of Maj. John S.. MacLaughlin, who relinquished command 16 days later to Maj. Joseph Foss. At that time, Foss held the record of 26 kills in combat. The unit stayed at Santa Barbara, in training status, until February 1944, when it was sent overseas to join the support of the Pacific campaign of World War II. On Feb. 23, 1945, VMF-115 sunk the first submarine of the war by F4U Corsairs, dropping 1,000-pound bombs from altitudes as low as 25 feet. After WWII, the entire squadron was transferred to Peiping, China. From China, the unit was transferred to Hawaii and then later to Edenton, North Carolina, where it became the first Marine squadron to receive a complement of F9F Panther aircraft in Dec. 1949. The early part of 1950 was devoted to operations in Puerto Rico and the surrounding area. Then the squadron transferred to

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. October of the same year found VMF-115 aboard the USS Roosevelt, where it became the first Marine Panther jet squadron to qualify and serve aboard a Navy aircraft carrier. In 1952, 115 transferred to Pohang, Korea, serving with Marine Aircraft Group 33. There VMF-115 flew more than 9,250 combat sorties, more than 15,350 combat hours, and expended more ordnance than any other jet squadron. After Korea, the squadron transferred to MCAS El Toro. There it received the first F4D Skyrays in early spring 1957, and became Marine All-Weather Fighter Squadron 115. Being the last Marine squadron to fly the F4D, 115 was redesignated Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115 in January 1964 and transitioned to the Mach II Phantom F4B aircraft. July 1965 saw 115 deploy to MCAS Iwakuni, in preparation for movement to the Republic of Vietnam, and deployment to Danang Air Base was accomplished between Sept. and Oct. 1965. The squadron saw three months of combat from the air base then returned to Iwakuni in Jan. 1966. On 15 April 1966, VMFA 115 again returned to Vietnam as part of Marine Aircraft Group 11. In support of Operation Hastings during the month of July alone, 115 set a record for all Marine F4B squadrons in Vietnam by flying 1001.7 hours on 727 sorties while expending 935.78 tons of ordnance. In May 1967, the Silver Eagles made their third command performance in Vietnam,

now as a part of MAG 13, located at MCAS Chu Lai. After the Vietnam War the squadron relocated to Beaufort and joined MAG-31 and in 1980 they began flying missions aboard the USS Forrestal to support the Cold War. In Jan. 1985, 115 began transitioning to the F/A-18 Hornet which the squadron still flies today. The following year, they officially became known as the Silver Eagles. The squadron deployed aboard the USS Harry Truman in October 2002. In March 2003, the Silver Eagles fought against Iraqi forces as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, delivering more than 150 tons of ordnance. In October 2004, the squadron again deployed aboard the Truman for Operation Iraqi Freedom II, providing close air support and overhead security in support of Iraq’s historic democratic elections. In July 2006, VMFA-115 deployed to Okinawa and the Republic of Korea. The squadron was presented with the Chief of Naval Operations’ Safety Award while in Japan. In March 2008, the Silver Eagles deployed to Al Asad, Iraq. The squadron was the first single seat hornet squadron in theater providing close air support and overhead security across Iraq. The Silver Eagles have proven their strength in battle time and time again. Their aviators are a testament to the outstanding tradition of excellence in the Marine Corps and remain to be an essential member aboard Fightertown.

Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Samantha K. Torres Staff Writer

The 27th Annual Commanding Officer’s tree lighting ceremony took place aboard Laurel Bay Dec. 3. The event was open to Marines, sailors and their families to celebrate the holiday season. “The tradition has been around for 27 years, and it brings the residents of the Laurel Bay community out in full force and puts them into a festive mood,” said Sgt. Maj. Kecia Jordan, the sergeant major of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. The event began with a welcoming message from Col. Peter D. Buck, the commanding officer of the air station, and was followed by entertainment provided by the students of the Bolden Elementary choir and cheer team. Families sang along with the Bolden Elementary choir to traditional Christmas music while awaiting the arrival of Santa Clause. “We have a special guest of honor tonight,” said Buck to the crowd. “But the real guests of honor tonight are the all the little ones you see running around.” The MCAS Fire-rescue truck arrived with Santa and Mrs. Clause, who were greeted with the song ‘Here comes Santa Clause,’ and cheering from the crowd. “I love driving by and seeing the lights on the tree. I have done this for three years and I think this is the most people I have seen attend. It gets better every year,” said Jordan. The tree is lit up every night on Laurel Bay, and is lo- Col. Viewers of the procession lined the streets as the parade headed down town. Some wore holiday themed costumes to celebrate the season. Children passed out candy and Christmas cards as they walked down the street. “All the parades we have here are great,” said Saunders, originally from North Carolina. “This is such a fun place to live.” The town of Beaufort sponsors many parades and festivals throughout the year, including the Shrimp and Waterfront festivals as well as a Veterans Day parade. The Christmas parade is one of the numerous celebrations and events that have occurred throughout the area to celebrate the holidays. The Night on the Town event, Dec. 4, featured food and live entertainment at Beaufort Waterfront Park. There was

a Christmas tree lighting ceremony for residents of Laurel Bay housing community Dec. 3. “The Marines in this town are great,” said Curtis Merlino, a Beaufort resident. “There is so much support within the community for the military and it is great to see them out here celebrating with us.” In addition to the Parris Island band’s performance, many service members from the Tri-command were present to show their support and get into the holiday spirit. As the parade drew to a close, Santa Clause himself appeared riding a Beaufort Fire Department truck and waving to his many admirers. “That’s when you know it’s really Christmas,” said Saunders. “When Santa shows up and all the kids go nuts.”
