Students aboard Laurel Bay held an art competition for Earth Day April 22. The competition focused on themes of conservation and was open for students at Charles F. Bolden Elementary/ Middle School, Robert E. Galer Elementary School, and Middleton S. Elliott Elementary School to submit artwork. “This competition has been going on for several years and it’s sponsored by the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort recycling department,” said Eleanor Huey, the educational technologist at Elliot Elementary. “This year we decided to use our art teacher as our point of contact and she worked with the students over several art classes focusing on reducing, reusing and recycling. She gave them some ideas and the children just ran with it. They came up with their own drawings with the theme see

PROVOST MARSHAL’S OFFICE DRUG TAKE BACK
The Provost Marshal’s Office with Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort will provide assistance to Marines, sailors, their family members and civilian personnel in disposing of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of
abused prescription medications are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines-flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash-both pose potential safety and health hazards. Anyone with medication to dispose can do so from 10:00 A.M. -2:00 P.M. on April 30, at the Parris Island Marine Corps Exchange located at 178 Malecon Drive, Parris Island, SC 29905. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

ment of Defense and Marine Corps observance of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. “What we have decided to do aboard the air station is to have an open event to Marines and sailors,” said DePinto. “Marines and sailors are learning how to play their part in preventing sexual assault.” The event is one of many learning opportunities that is offered. Service members are given annual classes from UVAs on the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program. Uniformed Victim Advocates inform the Marines and sailors about prevention, options of reporting, and ways to help their fellow service members. “My role in the SAPR program is to be a UVA to service members,” said LS2 Makerria Stroud, a UVA for Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “I feel like it’s easier for Marines and sailors to talk about sexual assault to someone who also wears a uniform.” Along with the civilian advocates, UVAs from each unit of the air station attended the event. A UVA is a service member who is trained to assist other service members when reporting a sexual assault. When an act of sexual assault is reported, the victim has two options of reporting, restricted or unrestricted, said DePinto. If a restricted report is made, the installation commander is notified a restricted report has been made, and the victim may seek counseling or medical attention if they choose to do so. If an unrestricted report is
made, law enforcement is notified and follows legal procedures. The UVAs in the units respond to reports and fulfill their duties as a UVA as well as performing day to day operations with their units. DePinto’s mission is to be a victim’s advocate to the personnel of the air station, civilians and service members. “The most important role I have is crisis intervention and safety,” said DePinto. “When an unrestricted report is made, I am notified, and it is my job to be sure the victim is safe, if they need medical attention or counseling, or a military protective order and to support the victim through the process.” The Marine Corps remains committed to the elimination of this crime from our ranks, and individual Marines are doing their part to reach this goal, according the MARADMIN. Every service member has a role in upholding core values, regardless of rank or occupational specialty. The event helps the Marine Corps reach this goal by giving information at the event to those that attended to pass to their fellow service members to ensure they knew how and where to make a report. “It is important for Marines and sailors to be informed about the SAPR program because sexual assault is happening,” said DePinto. “The more information we give out, the easier it will be for service members to know where to go for help.” The Department of Defense has a 24/7 Safe Helpline to make a report. To report a sexual assault at any time call 1- (877) 995-5247.

MP Students take on Law Enforcement Professional Exercise

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Missouri -- Seventy-eight enlisted Marines and 15 officers with the Marine Military Police Basic Course and the new Marine Military Police Officer Basic Course participated in the Law Enforcement Professional Exercise at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri April 12-14. The exercise is a three-day training evolution made to test the expeditionary environment skills that the Marines have learned and practiced during their 70-day course. “They are taking what they learned for the past 13 weeks and putting it into practice,” said Capt. Daniel Burton, the Military Police Officer Basic Course officer in-charge. “They’re going on foot patrols, conducting tactical site exploitation, and collecting evidence.” Marines are taught in a classroom environment or through practical application during the 13 weeks of training prior to the exercise, but they don’t have many chances to see what it looks like in action. “You can teach something in a classroom environment and hope that they grasp the concept of it but it’s not until you come out here and actually exercise it that they truly understand the importance or difficulty of it,” said Burton. According to Burton, having the ability to go out and practice the skills they are learning in an integrated environment is a great opportunity for officers to learn
how to lead enlisted Marines. “At The Basic School you learn how to be an officer but don’t necessarily interact or lead enlisted Marines on a regular basis; the first time most officers will do that is when they go to the fleet,” said 2nd. Lt. Mark Crum, a student at the Military Police Officer School. Integrated training also allows for enlisted Marines to get the chance to learn how to work alongside officers, which they haven’t done in their careers until now. “I really like the interaction we get with the officers,” said Pfc. Lucas Johnson, a student at the Military Police School. “I Students at the Marine Military Police Basic Course and the new Marine Military Police Officer feel like junior Marines are intimidated by Basic Course patrol during a field exercise at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, April 14, 2016. officers, but this shows us that we can talk The exercise tests the Marines readiness for tasks they may be required to do in the fleet. and ask them questions.” The exercise tests the mental and physical limitations of Marines looking to earn the title of military policeman or military police officer. Whether it’s by countless patrols up and down the hills of Missouri or the test of trying to remember every step in tactical site exploitation. “The most challenging part of this exercise is changing the mindset from the garrison side of our job, to now the more expeditionary mindset of coming to the field,” said Staff Sgt. David Spurling, the lead instructor for team D, Military Police Instructor Company. After the Marines have proven the skills they have learned from this exercise, they will graduate the course and go on to their assigned stations. posted directly on the poster.” Teresa Karlyk, an art teacher, helped the students create designs that fit the Earth Day theme. Designs ranged from depictions of green landscapes to informational diagrams on the importance of recycling. “The bottom line is we like to see the students getting involved with taking care of the Earth,” said Huey. The artwork was submitted to the recycling department aboard the air station for judging. The judges looked for the most visually appealing poster with the theme clearly displayed. Prizes were awarded to the top three pieces from each grade.
“I am incredibly proud of all the though and efforts that you all put into your artwork,” said Lt. Col Sean Henrickson, the executive officer of MCAS Beaufort, during the award ceremony. “It really shows your dedication to learning about how to take care of our planet.” The competition served as an extension of the year-long Earth Day curriculum at the Laurel Bay schools. Many of the lessons are centered on the reducing, reusing and recycling theme. “Earth day celebration reinforces everything that we do here on a regular basis,” said Latonya Leeks, the principal of Elliot Elementary. “We teach them to recycle and to conserve energy. We have a song that the children sing in the classroom about being green. It’s common practice here at the school, not just something we do on Earth Day
alone.” Students at Elliot have a special tradition to keep the campus green and create lasting knowledge. “Typically the second grade plants a tree every year in honor of earth day and their time here at the school,” said Leeks. Earth day is one day a year but the educators aboard Laurel Bay ensure that the importance of conservation stays with their students. Conserving natural resources is important to the Marine Corps so it also must be valued in the community. “You all are the future,” said Henrickson. “One day it will be up to you to keep the Earth alive and pass on the knowledge that you are learning now in school. All of us have the power to make a difference. That is what Earth Day is all about.”
