arine Corps Community Services South Carolina hosted a Mini Marines program aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, March 3. The event was organized by MCCS’s Lifestyle Insights, Networking, Knowledge, and Skills program to build camaraderie and promote a family atmosphere
for the children of Marines aboard MCAS Beaufort. L.I.N.K.S is a program that helps service member and their families adjust to the Marine Corps lifestyle and the local installation. L.I.N.K.S. is offered as both installation and unit training to Marines, Sailors and families. “My mission is to have military families understand how important they are to America,” said Roxanne Farr, the volunteer coordinator for L.I.N.K.S. “Without them we realize freedom isn’t free and they
are the ones paying the ultimate price for our freedom.” Mini-Marines is an event held by MCCS. The children were sworn in on yellow footprints by drill instructors and then split into different platoons and given different colored handkerchiefs to identify their group. Each platoon was led by Marine volunteers who guided the Mini Marines through the different activities. “This is the most fun I have ever had volunteering at an event,” said Cpl. Lindsee

The American Red Cross donated American Girl dolls to families of Marines aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, March 1. The event was held at the Marine Corps Family Team Building office at the air station and was geared toward families of Marines who deployed or are about to deploy. “None of the families were expecting this to happen,” said Jimmie Woods, the Family Readiness Officer for Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115. “We wanted to keep this event as much of a surprise as possible. So when the kids walked in, to see their faces when they realized what was happening. There is no purer form of excitement.” The process to make the event possible started months ago when American Girl donated several hundred dolls to the Red Cross with the stipulation that they go to families of active duty troops. Charles F. Bolden Elementary School hosted Family Literacy Night aboard Laurel Bay, March 2. Family Literacy Night was held to promote Read Across America. The program was an endeavor to get students involved in a combination of science, technology, engineering, math and reading activities. The event was also an opportunity for parents to get involved with their children’s education. “Tonight the students will be going room to room participating in combinations of different STEM and literacy activities” said Nina Martinez-Bennet, a third-grade teacher at Bolden Elementary School. “We wanted to highlight some STEM activities, but the focus is on reading and the advantages that it offers.” According to the National Education Association, Read Across America was founded in 1998 as an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Read Across America also provides parents, teachers, and students the resources and activities they need to keep reading every day of the year. “I think that reading is the most important subject that a child will ever study. If you can read you can learn anything,” said Col. Timothy Miller, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. “If we are encouraging our children to read it will be one of the best skills that we can provide them.” Throughout the evening students walked through different classrooms and engaged in activities ranging from making slime with baking soda and ex-

They sectioned off a part of the hallway where students could browse and find books for themselves. “I think as a parent who has kids this age it’s really good to see the effect that a program like Read Across America has on our children,” said Miller “I’ve been trying to get more involved now that I see how much of an impact these kinds of programs can bring.”

31st MEU F-35Bs Join USS Wasp for Historic Deployment Story by 2nd Lt. Ethan Treacy 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit
USS WASP (LHD-1), EAST CHINA SEA — A detachment of F-35B Lightning IIs with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, landed on the USS Wasp March 5, marking the beginning of the F-35B’s first operational deployment with a MEU. The aircraft embarked on the Wasp in advance of the 31st MEU’s upcoming Spring Patrol 2018, a regularly-scheduled patrol of the Indo-Pacific region with the ships of Amphibious Squadron 11, forming the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group. “This is a historic deployment,” said Col. Tye R. Wallace, 31st MEU Commanding Officer. “The F-35B is the most capable aircraft ever to support a Marine rifleman on the ground. It brings a range of new capabilities to the MEU that make us a more lethal and effective Marine AirGround Task Force.” Well-suited for the Marine Corps’ amphibious and expeditionary focus, the F-35B can carry more firepower into more uncertain environments for longer periods of time, with better survivability than any other aircraft in history. The “B” variant of the F-35 is the only one capable
of short take-off and vertical landing. The STOVL capability allows the F-35B to launch from and land on amphibious assault ships like the Wasp, greatly increasing the F-35B’s range and deployability. “The F-35B is a gamechanger for the Marine Corps,” said LtCol. Richard Rusnok, VMFA-121 Commanding Officer. “We are honored to be the first to deploy such a capable aircraft in support of a MEU, and are looking forward to integrating will all the other elements of the Marine AirGround Task Force and Navy Amphibious forces during this and future deployments.” The F-35B combines a variety of specialized capabilities in one aircraft, such as stealth, electronic attack, advanced sensors technology and high payload capacity, all while maintaining the agility that fighters are known for. The resulting flexibility allows a lone F-35B to accomplish missions that would otherwise require multiple aircraft. With advances in sensors and networking technology, the F-35B is able to share a superior picture of the battlefield with other pilots flying different platforms like the F/A-18 Hornet or AV-8B Harrier. The result is a force-multiplying effect for the Marine Corps’ existing fleet of air-
