The event was held to foster cohesion between the tri-command and the local community, as well as, to thank the local members of the military for their service. “This day is just a small token of appreciation for all of the hard work that our local military does,” said Blakely Williams, the president and chief executive officer of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce. “This event is just one example of the things that we can accomplish when we work together as a team.” Businesses and organizations from the Lowcountry volunteered to give back to the Tri-command. The free event included games, a live DJ, bounce houses, a dunk tank from St. Peter’s Catholic Church as well as food and refreshments offered by The Marine Corps League. Photo by Cpl. Semper Fit Summer Challenge comes to close Story by Cpl. Ashley Phillips

Sgt. Maj. Derrick Mays, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort sergeant major, speaks during the closing ceremony of the Semper Fit Summer Challenge aboard MCAS Beaufort, Aug. 29. During the ceremony, prize money was presented to the winning squadrons. Throughout the challenge, squadrons were able to accrue points by individual Marines participating in Semper Fit events such as 5k runs, tournaments, climbing the rock wall, or attending events at the theaters.

Semper Fit staff and personnel presented nine squadrons with prize money for competing in the Semper Fit Summer Challenge aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Aug. 29. The award ceremony was held in Afterburners and awarded over $6,000 in prize money to the winning squadrons and units. Aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot and the air station, units participated in the summer challenge and were awarded points based on the percentage of squadron personnel who attended. “This is the third year in a row that Marine Wing Support Detachment 31 has been given a $1,000 check,” said Maj. Patrick W. Junick, the commanding officer of MWSD-31. “From a leadership perspective, it’s about taking care of my Marines. Whatever we can do to lower the cost of the Marine Corps Ball tickets for them.” The SFSC began three months ago on May 16. Since then, there have been 22 official events and even more opportunities for Marines to earn points for their units. Events ranged from costume themed 5k

runs, swim meets, movie marathons, and various events at Afterburners. “This year we chose the theme of the Commandant’s ‘Seize the Initiative’,” said Kathy Williams, the promotion coordinator with Semper Fit. “We thought it went along with what the whole summer challenge was about.” Some of the highlighted points from Seize the initiative are “Take better care of ourselves because combat is the most extreme and demanding test” and “Have more fun as Marines because it is a privilege to be a part of this elite warfighting organization”. “It feels good to be able to offer this, to have the help from sponsors we have had, and it’s been so much fun to be able to see everyone come out,” Williams said. “It’s bitter sweet to see the SFSC come to an end, after months of work. We’ve had over 5,880 participants throughout the summer of active duty Marines.” Units were also able to earn points by climbing the rock wall at the gym. Individual Marines could climb the wall once a day to earn one point for the squadron. MWSD-31 took advantage of this see sfsc, page 4 and had over 665

ficer of Naval Hospital Beaufort. “An event like this would be impossible to pull off without the commitment of all the amazing volunteers that came out today.” According to the Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce’s website, The Tri-command is Northern Beaufort County’s primary economic contributor. The three installations combined directly employ more than 19,240 military and civilian personnel. According to an economic impact study completed in January 2017 by the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the combined direct economic impact for military and civilians for the three installations is more than $993.8 million for the area with a total impact of more than $2.2 billion on the local economy.

As the year comes to a close, the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce will host more events for the different holiday seasons. On October 26 is a Trick-or-Treat in Downtown Beaufort and December 1-3 is a holiday celebration with the annual Christmas boat parade and “Night on the Town”. “The Lowcountry and MCAS Beaufort have a fantastic working relationship,” said Col. Timothy Miller, the commanding officer of MCAS Beaufort. “I’ve been to places where the communities don’t embrace you nearly as much as the community does here. On behalf of all the Marines and Sailors of the air station, thank you very much for welcoming and Photo by Cpl. Marines with Combat Logistics Company 23 and Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron compete in a dodge ball tournament aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Aug. 7. The tournament was a part of the Semper Fit Summer Challenge. The three-monthlong competition featured various events such as 5K costume themed runs, rock climbing, movie marathons and sports tournaments. The unit or squadron with the highest percentage of participation were given prize money to go towards their Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

climbs on the wall this last month alone. “Aside from the prize money, the SFSC was also just a great way to educate the Marines about all the programs we can offer them to promote a healthy lifestyle,” Williams said. “Another part of it is the bonding and camaraderie that can happen. It’s good healthy competition that really just allows the participants to have fun and try new things.” For the air station, there was a three-waytie for first place. Marine Air Control Squadron II, Combat Logistics Company 23, and MWSD-31 each received a $1,000 check for their Marine Corps Ball. Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron received a $300 check, Marine Aircraft Group 31 received a $200 check and Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 received a $100 check.

In ”Seize the Initiative,” Gen. Robert B. Neller, commandant of the Marine Corps, said, “Along with always striving to be better, we should strive to have more fun together. Build and strengthen the bonds of camaraderie we share as Marines. Resolve to spend more time socializing with each other. Get out and explore the world with your fellow Marines. Do things you’ve always wanted to do: learn to surf, master another language, play an instrument, run an adventure race, etc. Don’t just sit on your backside in the barracks or at home. Enjoy the privileges and freedoms that you have sworn to defend.” The SFSC encouraged just that: good health, camaraderie, education, and fun. After three months of hard work, the participants either won a prize or benefited from the fostering of unit cohesion, healthier and ready to fight.

SHREDDING ADVERSITY: SURFING HELPS WOUNDED WARRIORS RECOVER

Recovering service members, veterans, volunteers and their loved ones prepare for a group photo during the 12th Annual Operation Amped Surf Camp at San Onofre Beach at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Aug. 18. Operation Amped is a nonprofit organization that supports wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans throughout their recovery. Story and photos by Cpl. Dylan Chagnon

Service members often encounter physical, psychological and emotional adversity when protecting the freedoms this country was founded on. The injuries sustained both on and off duty require recovery in many forms – including physical competitions, religious programs, community outreach opportunities, behavioral health and more. Some may only need a surfboard and a wave to ride. Veterans, recovering service members and their loved ones attended the 12th Annual Operation Amped Surf Camp at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Aug. 17-19. Operation Amped is a non-profit organization that promotes surf therapy to aid in the recovery of wounded, ill and injured veterans and active-duty service members. According to Joseph Gabunilas, Operation Amped cofounder, this program exists to provide a positive change

in a participant’s future. Operation Amped accomplishes this by providing surf training once a year to wounded warriors, family members and veterans. “It’s a good way to keep that negative stuff out of your mind while catching a wave,” said retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. David Simons, a participant at Operation Amped. “Surfing has given me a goal, something to work toward and keep my focus straight.” The organization, which began in September 2006, has helped nearly 300 recovering service members, veterans and their loved ones. Along with the support and attendance of family members and friends, that number has now reached the thousands, said Gabunilas, who served in the U.S. Army. Having both the recovering service members and their loved ones in attendance, can provide the therapy needed to overcome the trials and tribulations they may be experiencing. “Ocean therapy is good for the mindset,” Simons said.

“It’s good for those that have difficult issues they’re dealinging with.” Some of the adversity these warriors face include the loss of fellow service members in and out of combat, overcoming pain and physical injury. For three days each year, with the support of organizations such as this one, participants move closer to recovery one wave at a time. Provisions come from volunteers and supporters who donate surfboards, wet suits, food, tents and tables. Most importantly, they donate their time. “This is my way of giving back,” Gabunilas said. “I served 21 years and this is another way I can give back to the brave men and women fighting for our country.” This annual event drives a passion for surfing for some and provides a recreational outlet for warriors and their family members to enjoy while physically and mentally challenging themselves in the water. The next clinic is scheduled for summer 2019.
