TZIPI STANDS FIRM UNDER BBC NEWSNIGHT ONSLAUGHT BY DAVID SAFFER Israel’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Tzipi Hotovely, stood firm on BBC Newsnight when questioned by presenter Emily Maitlis on a number of controversial issues. Concerning Israel’s vaccine programme and Israel’s obligation to support the Palestinians, Hotovely told Maitlis, “Let’s make a factcheck.

The Palestinians asked to run their own programme of vaccination. I think sometimes there is a little bit of misunderstanding of their responsibility because according to all international agreements their health authorities should take care of the Palestinian population.” Despite being interrupted by Maitlis, she added, “Would you impose getting vaccines to the leaders of the Palestinians? Would Israel’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Tzipi Hotovely

Neifeld stands for Tory Party in Hertsmere by-election Rabbi David Neifeld has been selected as the Conservative Party Candidate in the upcoming Hertsmere Borough Council by-election for a seat representing the Borehamwood Kenilworth Ward. A Borehamwood resident, he is committed to doing his part to make Borehamwood the best place to live. “As a father of a young child, I understand what it means to work hard for my family and to feel proud of the community where you choose to raise them,” he said. “I want to work hard for all families in the area and ensure that they continue to feel proud of the place they call home.” “I believe in the core values of the Conservative Party which include freedom, independence, choice and ambition. As we come out of the Covid era, a time that has been difficult for all in our own way, we need to harness these pillars to bounce back and build a bright future. “If elected, I will focus on representing the people of Borehamwood Kenilworth and be their voice on the council. In particular, I will work hard to ensure the smooth and efficient provision of key public services.” He added, “The last year has been difficult and has hit us all hard in different ways. As we look ahead to a brighter future, I hope to be entrusted with the opportunity to represent

KKL-JNF at a crossroads over West Bank BY DAVID SAFFER KKL-JNF is at a crossroads on its intentions to continue purchasing land in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). Board members representing Israeli political parties and international Zionist organisations including WIZO, Hadassah and Maccabi, vote today on whether KKL-JNF’s new management can officially adopt plans to openly buy Palestinian land in the West Bank. KKL-JNF has purchased land in the region through subsidiary organisations without approval of its board of directors and against JNF policies which state that it cannot purchase land in the West Bank. The issue has divided opinion within the organisation, the poll result could have huge ramifications. Left wing Jewish groups in Britain and the United States have backed an open letter stating that the resolution would see millions of shekels poured into purchasing Palestinian land in the West Bank for the “explicit purpose of expanding settlements and deepening the occupation”. The letter adds, “If passed, this resolution will be disastrous for Palestinian human rights and livelihoods, will expand the settlements and prevent progress towards peace.” The letter notes that WIZO, Hadassah and Maccabi will determine whether this resolution will pass.

need to respect that.” Questioned about a two-state solution with the Palestinians, she noted the Abraham Accords and was “in favour of peace”. Pressed by Maitlis, Israel’s emissary was calm and tough in her response, “We need to be realistic,” Hotovely said. “In the Middle East we need to have more pragmatic options. At the moment it looks like the Palestinians are refusing to come and negotiate. You cannot speak just about a formula when the Palestinians are not willing to negotiate with Israel because they are not interested in any two-state solution. We would be very happy to welcome the Palestinians to more of the peace process in a real direct negotiation.” Hotovely also discussed Israel’s “Green Passport”, travel to the UK and opposition to her appointment in the UK as a “religious right winger”.

“Abstaining from the vote is not enough, WIZO, Hadassah and Maccabi need to vote against this resolution in order to ensure that it is not adopted as KKL-JNF policy. These organisations have a seat at the table and their vote directly impacts the prospect of achieving peace in Israel/Palestine”, the letter states. It has been reported that hundreds of people have signed the petition calling on board members to reject the proposal to purchase Palestinian land in the West Bank. Signatories include left-wing Jewish groups J Street and Yachad. JNF UK would not comment on the vote but issued a statement. They noted, “JNF Charitable Trust (JNF UK) is a wholly independent UK registered charity that is separate from all other organisations bearing the shared Jewish National Fund name. “Every penny raised by JNF UK goes towards its own projects, approved by its Trustees, and all the charitable work it does to improve the lives of Israelis, both Jewish and non-Jewish, takes place within the Green Line of the 1949 Armistice border and meets its objects, UK charity regulations and best practice.” Peace in the Middle East has long been a hotly debated topic and controversial Senator Bernie Sanders this week called for controlling military aid to Israel. “We must be willing to say loudly and clearly,” Sanders reportedly said. “The occupation must end.”

Jewish gravestones desecrated in Belfast BY ADAM MOSES Ten Jewish gravestones in Belfast City Cemetery have been desecrated in an apparent antisemitic hate crime. Campaign Against Antisemitism called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. "Vandalism of Jewish graves is a cowardly act, but all too common in Britain and abroad,” said Stephen Silverman, CAA Director of Investigations and Enforcement. “We can honour the dead by ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice, and we support the efforts of the Police Service of Northern Ireland in doing so.” Sinn Fein councillor Steven Corr, along with Sinn Fein members, were active participants in the clean-up crew. Corr posted pictures of the scene on Facebook. He noted, “We work continuously after attacks on all graves belonging to all denominations, all religions, adults and children and these unbelievable attacks on the headstones of dead people needs to stop.” Corr added, “This appears to be a deliberate targeting and will be treated and recorded as a hate crime. CCTV is being looked at. We believe this has happened over the last 24 hours (before Friday).

“Parents need to impress upon their kids that the cemetery isn’t a playground or a place to gather. Parks, playgrounds and pitches are reopening and this damage and desecration of graves causes untold hurt and distress to all the families who have loved ones buried in the City Cemetery.” North Belfast DUP, William Humphrey, said he was “disgusted and appalled” to hear of the damage. Let them Rest in Peace.” Inspector Róisín Brown of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, stated, “I am appalled at these criminal acts. City Cemetery, like any graveyard, is a place where members of the community come to pay their respects. The damage to these graves shows a total lack of respect for others and will have a significant impact on individuals and families within the Jewish Community. “We are investigating this incident as a hate crime, but we need help from the local community in West Belfast to hold those responsible to account for their actions.” Anyone with information should telephone the police on 101 quoting reference 713 16/04/21.

WJC mourns passing of Leibler

COVID-19 deaths level off

BY SIMCHA ABIR

There have been 903 Jewish funerals in the United Kingdom carried out where the deceased contracted COVID-19 since the pandemic began last year. The Board of Deputies works with Jewish community’s burial boards, regional Jewish communities and Jewish Small Communities Network to produce weekly figures. One funeral was recorded from last week. There have been five deaths since March 12th, illustrating the recent decrease in fatalities. The Board liaises with seven of the largest denominational burial boards to collate an indicator of deaths where Covid-19 was a factor. Denominational burial boards include The Adath Yisroel Burial Society, Federation of Synagogues Burial Society, Spanish and Portuguese Sephardi Community and United Synagogue Burial Society. The Board has either received reports from regional communities or has accounted for them through the largest denominational burial boards where they cover that particular community. Cities large and small are included from Aberdeen to Belfast, Bognor Regis, Cheltenham, Cornwall, Eastbourne, Exeter, Leeds, Manchester, Southend and Swansea. The indicator covers deaths in hospitals and the wider community. When making comparisons of data, indicators may not have similar parameters. Successive figures are indicative of trends as smaller communities do not report weekly. For further information contact the Board of Deputies.

World Jewish Congress has mourned the passing of Isi Leibler who served the organisation in various capacities over five decades. During a stellar career, Liebler, who was born in Belgium, held posts as Senior Vice President, Chairman of the Governing Board and most recently Honorary Vice President. Committed to the future of world Jewry from his days with Bnei Akiva in Melbourne, Australia, Liebler was a past president of the Victorian Jewish Board of Deputies and Council of Australian Jewry. He made his mark with WJC on the international stage of world Jewry including helping the plight of Soviet Jews. An international businessman, Liebler had interests in the diamond, travel and hi-tech industries. “Isi was an eloquent and indefatigable champion of Australian Jewry and the Jewish people worldwide,” noted WJC President Ronald S. Lauder. “It was Isi who convinced me to run for the presidency of the WJC in 2007, and I owe him a debt of gratitude for it.” Lauder added, “Isi never forgot his family’s good fortune in leaving his native Belgium in 1939 on the eve of the war, nor did he forget those left behind who met a terrible fate. Already as a young adult, he

was a pioneer in waging the struggle to free Soviet Jewry, going head to head with those who sought a quieter approach. That dynamism and perseverance characterized Isi’s passionate commitment to the well-being of the Jewish people and the Jewish State and were always evident in the campaigns he undertook to advance Jewish and Israeli causes in every corner of the globe. “The Jewish people have lost one of our noblest sons.” Jillian Segal, Australian Jewry Executive Council President and WJC Vice President, also paid tribute. “The sudden passing of Isi in Jerusalem closes a chapter on one of the most remarkable and accomplished periods of Australian Jewish leadership,” she said. “Isi successfully brought passion, intellect, learning and unflinching commitment to

so many areas critical to Jewish life both in Australia and on the wider international stage, the likes of which we will probably never see again.” Robert Goot, the Executive Council’s Deputy President and WJC Policy Council Co-Chair worked with Isi for over 50 years in Australia and overseas. “His lifetime of Jewish leadership was truly extraordinary in its vision, intensity and impact,” he said. “Isi was an educated, passionate and articulate Jewish advocate of the highest order. He was incisive and uncannily perceptive. And he changed how we think and act as a community.” Maram Stern, WJC Executive Vice President, said that Isi was a force to be reckoned with in the Jewish world and never afraid to speak his mind. “Isi was actively involved in the work of the WJC for decades and brought great gusto to the deliberations at our meetings, he noted. “He was a strong proponent for the Soviet Jewry campaign and, in the early 1990’s, also began discussions with the authorities of the People’s Republic of China which paved the way for diplomatic relations with Israel to be created. His likes will not be seen again.” Leibler was buried in Jerusalem. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Naomi, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and brothers, Mark and Allan.

SNP & Tory candidates face CAA wrath BY DAVID SAFFER Campaign Against Antisemitism has lambasted candidates representing the Scottish National Party and Conservative Party over antisemitic posts. SNP candidates Colm Merrick and Stephanie Callaghan, and Tory candidate Darran Davies, all faced the wrath of CAA this month. CAA slammed Merrick, SNP candidate for Eastwood in Glasgow, which is

Scotland’s largest Jewish community, over a historical Facebook post in 2015 that compared Labour Party’s political strategy in Scotland to notorious Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels. Merrick reportedly shared his post regarding an article. He has since apologised stating his “stupid post” was made over six years ago. The incident came on the back of SNP’s Callaghan, who is standing in Uddingston and Bellshill, Lanarkshire, apologising after

a 2017 comment reportedly comparing tactics by the Conservatives to Hitler and the Holocaust. A CAA spokesperson said, “This is the second time in as many weeks that past

comments by current SNP candidates have emerged comparing a major political party to the Nazis. Last time it was the Conservatives and Hitler, this time it is Labour and (Joseph) Geobbels, the mastermind of Nazi propaganda.” CAA added, “Such trivial equations of today’s politics with the darkest period in human history diminish the meaning and memory of the Holocaust. This is the opposite of the example politicians are supposed to be setting, both about Holocaust education and how to conduct public debate.” CAA noted on its website that Merrick wrote, “Analysis of UK Labour in Scotland’s election strategy becomes truly terrifying when the following potential source of its inspiration is considered. ‘If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it’.” The quotation is attributed to Goebbels, Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda for the Nazi Party. Callaghan reportedly wrote on Twitter in connection to a possible second Scottish independent referendum, “Tory propaganda provides a window into future plans, stamp on democracy. Hitler did same: set scene 4 Jewish Holocaust to lower opposition.” At the time, Callaghan was a South Lanarkshire councillor. She was responding to then-Prime Minister Theresa May’s intent to halt an independence vote. Callaghan apologised, stating, “The words in this old tweet were poorly chosen and I apologise for the offence caused. I have deleted the tweet.” A CAA spokesperson said at the time, regarding Callaghan, “There is no comparison between political tensions in the UK today and Nazi Germany’s systematic destruction of democracy and murder of six million Jewish men, women and children. Politicians must set an example by learning the lessons of the Holocaust, not diminishing the memory of those innocents who were slaughtered by using the Holocaust to score political points. To make such a comparison is disgraceful and wounding, showing incredible ignorance.” The Tory episode concerns Davies, who is standing in Hillingdon in London, in local elections. Davies expressed remorse over a social media post last week. He is alleged to have shared an image of a man on Facebook with the words, “Wanted Jew Boy Reward $100”. According to CAA, Davies shared the image on with a caption, “Guys have you seen this bloke.” Hillingdon Council’s Conservative group leader reportedly said, “The posting relates to the use of an inappropriate nickname among friends. Although the comment was inappropriate and below the standards expected of a Conservative member this has been resolved by admonishing Mr Davies and reinforcing with him the standards expected of persons seeking to represent Hillingdon Conservatives. Mr Davies has shown deep regret for his lack of judgment and has apologised.” A Conservative Party spokesperson confirmed the issue was being investigated.

Board publish Racial Inclusivity report BY DAVID SAFFER The Board of Deputies publishes its Commission on Racial Inclusivity in the Jewish Community report today following an unparalleled 10-month investigation in UK Jewish history. The brutal, racist murder of George Floyd in May 2020 sparked a reckoning about the treatment of Black people globally and a reality of systemic racism and discrimination in societies both sides of the Atlantic. The Board expressed its concerns at the time but needed to go further. “No community is immune from the scourge of prejudice and ours is no exception,” noted a Board spokesman. “As society as a whole sought to examine racial diversity, we became aware of moving and concerning testimonies of Black members of our own community about their experiences.” The Board launched the Commission to learn more about the experiences of Black Jews, Jews of Colour and Sephardi, Mizrahi and Yemenite Jews, to examine the issues and make recommendations how the community can improve. Eminent journalist of Black and Jewish heritage, Stephen Bush, chaired the Commission. Today coincides with Stephen Lawrence Day, which is appropriate given the Commission’s many references to the Macpherson report into his murder. The Commission has evaluated 17 areas of communal life and made 119 recommendations, with profound implications for British Jewry. Among them representative bodies and organisations involved in rabbinic training should encourage members of

ADVOCACY FOR THE COMMUNITY under-represented ethnic groups to put themselves forward for communal roles. Jewish schools should ensure the secular curriculum engages with Black history, enslavement and the legacy of colonialism. Jewish studies departments should also ensure teaching celebrates and engages with racial and cultural diversity of the Jewish community worldwide including Mizrahi, Sephardi and Yemenite tradition. Communal institutions, particularly synagogues and schools, should commemorate key dates for diverse parts of the community such as the expulsion of Jews from Arab countries and Iran. Schools and youth movements should also improve training for teachers and youth leaders on tackling racist incidents. Communal bodies and Jewish schools, meantime, should establish regular listening exercises that seek concerns of members or students. Complaints processes must further be accessible, transparent, fair and robust with complaints related to racism handled according to the Macpherson principle along with new processes for handling complaints about security. Communal venues should ensure security guards or volunteers desist from racial profiling and institute bag searches for all visitors so as not to stigmatise people without compromising security.

Bush said, “My recommendations cover vast swathes of communal life and draws on best practice from across our community. Their essential components are transparency and openness. Many of these recommendations, I believe, have a far wider applicability than being positive for Black Jews, Jews of Colour or Sephardi, Mizrahi and Yemenite Jews. A proactive attitude to inclusion will draw in many people of all backgrounds who have felt marginalised, left out or turned off from Jewish life.” He added, “As a community that often frets about its numbers and its future, giving as many people as possible a sense of belonging and a full ability to participate will nourish, strengthen and enrich the Jewish community further, for the benefit of all its members.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl commented, “It makes difficult reading at times and its recommendations are certainly challenging. I sincerely hope the Commission serves as a starting point for a wider conversation in our community and in wider society about how to tackle and defeat the scourge of racism.” Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis noted, “The exclusion of even a single person because of the colour of their skin is a collective failure for which we must all take responsibility. Where good practice exists, let us celebrate it and where failings are identified, let us be

earnest and persistent, leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to resolve them.” “The Torah teaches that we should love our fellow Jew as we love ourselves and the Midrash famously quotes Rabbi Akiva who refers to this mitzvah as a fundamental principle of the Torah,” commented Michael Goldstein, United Synagogue President. “We have committed publicly to learn how we can be more inclusive by listening to our members of colour and carefully reading the recommendations of the report.” Rabbi Joseph Dweck, S&P Sephardi Community said the report offered a “carefully researched, broad and thorough set of observations and recommendations” to help communities embrace Jews from all backgrounds, ethnicities and orientations. He added, “One of the great beauties of the Jewish people is that we have lived in all parts of the world and absorbed the elements of culture and perspective from our international experiences. We are a repository of humanity’s diversity and we must embrace that about ourselves.” “The report importantly raises awareness in its own right, and its recommendations are markers as to how our community can be more welcome and inclusive for all Jews,” added Community Security Trust. “CST actively discourages racial profiling in our training and work, because it is wrong on an operational, moral and legal basis. In security, behaviour is the thing that matters, not colour.” “This work will not only be important (and necessary) for the Jewish community, but can also help Britain become a fairer and more cohesive society,” noted JCORE. JW3 hosts a public launch for the report on Sunday (8pm).

Israir stop Shabbat flights Teen murder tragedy

in Kiryat Gat BY SIMCHA ABIR

Israir Airlines have stopped operating flights on Shabbat. According to Globes, the move comes four months after the acquisition of the airline by Rami Levy and Shalom Chaim through BGI investments. Both are Shomer Shabbat. “I’m a religious Jew, Shomer Shabbat, and all my businesses are closed on Shabbat,” Chaim reportedly said. “We respect those who observe Shabbos and this is not a personal whim of mine, it’s the DNA of Judaism.” He added, “On the business side, we’re at the examination stage. We’ll examine the economic implications of reducing activity

on Shabbat. We want to reach a situation in which there’s a weekly day of rest for the pilots as well. There are many businesses that don’t operate on Shabbat and aviation can be included as well. “The discussion about the Shabbat was mainly in the media, as a consequence of the world view of the shareholders, but we haven’t yet examined the subject in depth. We understand trade but we’re not as wellversed in aviation. We’ll know more on the subject within two to three months.” El Al subsidiary Sun D’Or International Airlines halted flights on Shabbat in January following its acquisition by Eli Rozenberg.

The Kiryat Gat community in southern Israel is struggling to come to terms with the tragic murder of a 14-year-old boy by his father, 37, who is now in a psychiatric unit. The heartrending sheloshim of the teen took place on Sunday with a message of apology from the boy’s father read out by his distraught uncle. Emergency services attended the home after the mother reported her husband was stabbing their son. Medical staff transported the boy to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon in critical condition where doctors declared his death. The father had fled the scene but was found in woods behind his home. He was arrested on suspected of murder and transferred for psychiatric evaluation. There were reports the father had not worked since the pandemic. Ashkelon Magistrates' Court ordered an

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

extension of the father’s stay in hospital. “There are testimonies that the father was hearing voices,” the judge reportedly said. “In the emergency room, he wouldn’t speak, claiming that he was forbidden to talk. Other testimonies speak about his mental state prior to the severe incident. He will be sent for a psychiatric evaluation to assess whether he is fit to be sentenced and if he is responsible for his actions.” “This was a very severe incident,” an MDA paramedic reportedly added. “We immediately began medical treatment, including stopping the bleeding, bandaging, and performing resuscitation techniques. We brought him into a mobile intensive care unit while continuing medical treatment and evacuated him to the hospital in critical condition while continuing advanced resuscitation techniques.” Deputy Superintendent Ronen Avnieli has set up an investigative team to examine the incident.

Rivlin acts after Orthodox Jews targeted BY SIMCHA ABIR Orthodox Jews have been targeted in a spate of attacks in Israel. Police battled with protesters in an Arab neighbourhood of Tel Aviv after an assault on a rabbi last weekend. Tensions rose after two Palestinians men attacked Rabbi Eliyahu Mali, Rosh of Shiras Moshe in Yafo, on Sunday afternoon, whilst he was looking at properties according to local media. The incident sparked clashes between Jewish and Palestinian groups. Police made a number of arrests. Yamina MK Matan Kahana reportedly commented, “A Rav in Israel attacked in the middle of the day in the center of the city. Where have we reached?” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai condemned the attack. Other incidents uploaded on social media include a yeshivah student riding his bike toward Kikar Tzahal who was reportedly attacked by a group of Palestinian in Jerusalem’s Old City on Monday night. The student was surrounded, punched and kicked. The attack was videoed. Police responded in pursuit of the perpetrators of the attack.

Elsewhere, a group of Palestinians in Yafo, without provocation, reportedly attacked a 70-year-old man and his son when they attempted to drive past their vehicle. The attackers punched the elderly man who suffered injuries to his face and a broken arm. The son was threatened with a screwdriver. The suspects were arrested, one has been placed under house arrest. The Honenu legal aid organisation is representing the victims. An indictment had been filed against a suspect. Teenager Yedidia Epstein was also reportedly attacked taking footage as Jews clashed with Palestinians due to the attacks. Commander Sami Marciano of Jerusalem Police said that videos posted online incentivise more attacks as a trend. “We are taking steps to remove the clips when we identify crimes being committed,” he reportedly noted. President Reuven Rivlin condemned the violence, calling on Palestinian and Jewish leaders to join forces to end the attacks. “These images of Jews suffering such

bullying for no reason, in broad daylight, are disturbing,” Rivlin reportedly said. “We must not allow this violence to become legitimate. We must fight it through education and public condemnation and with severe police enforcement.” In related news, a Palestinian teen reportedly published a video on his TikTok account of a virtual game involving the murder of a character looking to be a Chareidi man. The game has music in the background as the man is shot. TikTok’s CEO in Israel claimed in a letter on Tuesday that videos featuring violence against Charedim on the network have been removed. All TikTok accounts with hate content are blocked. Incidents have also been posted in the United States. New York police arrested a man who appeared to reverse his vehicle into a group of orthodox Jews last weekend. According to reports, five victims, aged from 11 to 82, were relatives. A 26-year-old suspect was apprehended by Shomrim. The American Jewish Committee reportedly described the incident as a “horrific antisemitic attack”.

Welsh political parties united on IHRA definition BY ADAM MOSES Welsh political parties have backed the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance working definition of antisemitism and opposition to boycotts that defame Israel at the Jewish community’s Senedd Hustings this week. Minister for Health and Social Services and Labour candidate for Cardiff South and Penarth, Vaughan Gething, noted, “When the Welsh government adopted the full IHRA working definition of antisemitism, that should have been a clear signal to all of us.” Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, expressed his opposition to boycotts. “Many of the boycotts are promoted just because the state of Israel exists and that’s reprehensible,” he said. Plaid Cym leader Liz Saville-Roberts’s party had previously adopted the IHRA definition with Home Affairs Select Committee caveats. The party had a change of stance on the issue. “My recommendation (in the recent Plaid Cymru antisemitism review) is that we should adopt the full definition without the caveats,” she said. Rodney Berman, Liberal Democrat

candidate for Cardiff Central added, “The importance of value of having a Jewish homeland to the Jewish community has to be understood. (Boycotts can) make people feel unwelcome in their own country”. All four candidates also backed the retention of Shechitah, which is of particular importance given the devolved status of agriculture to the Senedd. They also expressed scepticism towards boycotts on Israel. Other topics covered included faith education, refugees, inclusive societies and higher education. Sheila Gewolb, Board of Deputies senior vice president and Cardiff United Synagogue deputy said, “These hustings give Jewish Senedd voters the opportunity to find out where the parties stand on issues that affect us as Jews.” Laurence Kahn, South Wales Jewish Representative council chair, added, “Whatever the outcome of the Senedd election, issues such as antisemitism, Israel, education and religious freedom will continue to affect the Jewish community.” Kahn looked forward to continuing dialogue with Senedd parties. The Board and South Wales Jewish Representative Council organised the event.

Demonstration planned over Halimi murder verdict

BY DAVID SAFFER Demonstrations are set to take place in Paris and London on Sunday following an outrageous verdict by France’s Supreme Court regarding the murder of 65-year-old of Sarah Halimi in her Paris apartment. France’s highest court has backed Halimi’s killer, Kobili Traore, a Muslim neighbour, who claimed not to be responsible for his actions as he felt “possessed” due to being high on cannabis. Traore, a violent drug dealer, subjected the retired schoolteacher to years of antisemitic abuse. He then brutally beat Halimi and threw her from a third floor balcony to her death shouting “Allahu akhbar”. Police were at the front door of the apartments awaiting reinforcements. French authorities refused to admit the antisemitic crime for months. Halimi’s family is considering an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. “The judge cannot distinguish where the legislator has chosen not to make a distinction,” the court said in a statement. But France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, has called for reforms in French law. He reportedly told Le Figaro magazine, “Deciding to take drugs and then ‘becoming mad’ should not in my eyes remove your criminal responsibility. On this topic, I would like the Minister of Justice to submit a change to the law as soon as possible. It is not for me to comment on a court decision, but I would like to tell the family, relatives of the victim and all fellow citizens of the Jewish faith who were awaiting this trial of my warm support and the determination of the Republic to protect them.” Campaign Against Antisemitism note that in France a person can be sentenced to a year in prison for throwing a dog from a window, but you can walk free from court if you kill a Jew whilst on drugs. “France has gradually betrayed its Jews by allowing antisemitism to run rampant, putting French Jews in fear,” noted a CAA spokesman.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

A rally will take place outside the Embassy of France in London to stand in solidarity with French Jews (Sunday, 1pm). Thousands of French Jews and supporters protested in Paris last year after the French Court of Appeal ruled Traore was “not criminally responsible” for his actions. Traore conceded that seeing a Jewish menorah and prayer book in Hamili’s flat intensified his mental state. The court acknowledged the attack was antisemitic. Francis Kalifat, President of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France, reportedly said, “From now on in our country, we can torture and kill Jews with complete impunity.” A CAA spokesperson added, “After the Holocaust, in which France did so little to protect its Jewish citizens, the nation swore to defend the Jews who remained against their tormentors. This latest decision, with France’s highest court determining that torturing and throwing an elderly Jewish woman out of a window cannot be ascribed to antisemitic motivations if the attacker is high, is a betrayal of that pledge.” CAA added, “In view of this attitude, it is little wonder that so many Jews have fled France in recent years and that fewer than half of British Jews believe that the Jewish community has a long-term future in Europe.” The Simon Wiesenthal Centre is likewise distressed by France’s Supreme Court decision. The Centre’s Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, stated, “After a harrowing three years of courtroom debate on the criminal responsibility of a murderer, presumably ‘under the influence’ of cannabis, which basically resulted in him being interned in a psychiatric hospital instead of being judged and condemned to prison, the family has been on edge until now. This is a devastating blow.” Samuels added, The Supreme Court’s decision now closes the case definitively and instead of allowing it to be re-examined by the Appeals Court on the basis of a more solid legal standpoint, it confirms that it is possible to deny justice for a murder aggravated by its antisemitic character. Furthermore, this decision denies closure for the family and potentially creates a precedent for all hate criminals to simply claim insanity or decide to smoke, snort or inject drugs or even get drunk before committing their crimes.” Samuels noted the memory of Sarah Halimi and other victims of antisemitic hatred would live on. “We will examine every possible further legal instance,” he noted. “Tonight, the murderer will be feted as a hero and frighteningly encourage followers to action. ‘Snort drugs to kill a Jew!”. A year after Halimi’s murder, a Holocaust survivor, Mireille Knoll, was stabbed to death in her Paris apartment. This case was recognised as a hate crime.

European Super League Jewish owners receive Twitter abuse BY DAVID SAFFER The European Super League has imploded within 48 hours of a bombshell announcement for a breakaway competition of elite clubs. But that did not stop a raft of Twitter users slating Jewish owners of ESL teams for “ruining football” when it appeared to be a fait accompli. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham joined AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid to endanger the very fabric of competitive football. But the house of ESL cards started to crash when Chelsea, owned by Roman Abramovich, and Manchester City announced they would drop out on Tuesday afternoon. All six Premier League teams have now withdrawn from the competition after world footballing authorities, fans, politicians, royalty and TV pundits lambasted the idea. Vile Twitter users however had already made their mark on social media platforms. Aside from Abramovich, the Glazer family run Manchester United and Daniel Levy is at the helm of Tottenham Hotspur. Tropes of Jewish greed, a classic antisemitic notion, came to the fore. Posts included one from a user who wrote, “Notably, most of the owners of these ‘big’ football clubs pushing for a Super League are Jews, including Roman Abramovich and the Glazers…..Jews are ruining football, they don’t give a f**** about the Gentile fans.” Another tweet noted, “All this talk of the European Super League. It’s Jew rats behind it. All money grabbing *****. It’s no wonder that people hate them as much as the Muslims.” And a third user commented, “Hey Zionists it’s not all about money you suckers”. Action Against Discrimination chairman Jonathan Metliss is appalled at the antisemitic slurs though not surprised as it’s not the first time Jewish owners and Jewish issues have been targeted. Metliss noted, “Regardless of one’s view on the European Super League, the anti-Semitic tweets and comments on social media directed at the owners of Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur and repetition of the standard anti-Semitic stereotypes are appalling. This behaviour is disgusting but sadly was not unexpected. Much of the online abuse on the Super League concept directed at Chelsea, United and Tottenham as a result of their Jewish connections has been anti-Semitic. The other three Premier League clubs, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal have not been subjected to similar racist abuse.

All six Premier League teams have now withdrawn from the competition after world footballing authorities, fans, politicians, royalty and TV pundits lambasted the idea. “AAD again condemns this deplorable behaviour and reinforces our campaign to eradicate anti-Semitism in football, whether at the ground, in grassroots football or on social media.” Metliss added, “Racist abuse is becoming more and more prevalent on social media and these anti-Semitic comments, which are part of this abhorrent situation, merely emphasise that the AAD campaign to eradicate anti-Semitism in football is proper, just and appropriate. This latest incident merely strengthens our resolve and determination to see an end to this behaviour once and for all. “As we have said previously and consistently, the clubs, football authorities, police and social media platforms have to do much more to prevent and eradicate this behaviour. This is a very sad state of affairs and hopefully will prompt the relevant bodies into serious and appropriate action.”

Campaign Against Antisemitism has continually called for tougher regulations on social media sites. A CAA spokesperson said, “The beautiful game has some very hideous fans, and they are out in force on social media objecting in the most grotesque fashion to the possible launch of a new European Super League. No controversy, however great the passions it may stir, can justify the horrendous antisemitic abuse meted out by some Twitter users towards football clubs and their owners. The Premier League, the clubs and social media networks have a responsibility to remove this material immediately and punish the offenders with bans from attending matches. This minority of perpetrators bring shame to the majority of fans who want to see racism expelled from football.” In related news, Tottenham chairman Levy has separately been on the receiving end of anti-Semitic abuse by a Twitter

user. The tweet, since removed, was said to have contained several antisemitic tropes and has been reported to police. Metliss was disturbed to hear about the anti-Semitic abuse directed at Levy. “This is deplorable behaviour and reinforces our campaign to eradicate anti-Semitism in football, whether at the ground, in grassroots football or on social media. “Ironically, this abuse has been directed at the chairman of Tottenham, whose supporters regularly chant the word ‘Yid’, ‘Yiddo’ and ‘Yid Army’, which themselves give rise to anti-Semitic behaviour and which words we continue to oppose.” Labour’s Shadow Minister and MP for Tottenham, David Lammy, condemned the abuse. He tweeted, “It’s a football match! This is utterly unacceptable. Racism and antisemitism has no place in the game or anywhere else. Please delete the tweet. You are no Spurs man trust me.” Tottenham replied on the club’s official Twitter account, stating, “We have reported this antisemitic post to Twitter and the police. Disappointing that the tweet has yet to be deleted. Twitter needs to take immediate action against racists continuing to post abuse. Our internal review into a best course of action moving forward is under way.” The Premier League and 19 of its constituent clubs, including Tottenham, have adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism.

Israel boost diplomat security over Iran BY ADAM MOSES Israel’s Foreign Ministry is evaluating security for diplomats due to possible terror attacks by Iran. Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi and Shin Bet head Nadav Argaman discuss options earlier this week. “We are seeing increased intelligence indicating possible targeting of Israeli emissaries abroad,” Foreign Ministry Director-General Alon Ushpiz reportedly told diplomats on Tuesday. “We take this information seriously and are concerned for the safety of our emissaries and their families and are taking all possible precautions.” Ushpiz called on diplomats to be vigilant.

“We would like to stress the need for your cooperation in adhering to the security regulations,” Ushpiz noted. A security cabinet meeting to discuss growing issues between Iran took place last weekend. Security being boosted is linked to the US and Iran taking part in indirect talks in Vienna with JCPOA participants to try save the 2015 nuclear accord. Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen reportedly said that a willingness to re-join the nuclear deal is detached from every “intelligence assessment and past experience” based on Iran’s deception in acquiring a nuclear weapon. He added, “Particularly galling is that the countries pursuing the

nuclear deal are ignoring Iran’s widespread funding of terrorist organisations in several countries in the Middle East, about which can only be said that those who lie down with dogs shouldn’t be surprised when they get up with fleas. Israel will remain committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons in every possible way.” Mossad Director Yossi Cohen, National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi are set to travel to the US next week according to media reports regarding the nuclear deal. The delegation is seeking more power for inspectors with the United Nation’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Israel is concerned over Iran’s missile

program and support for terrorist groups in the region. Mistrust between Israel and Iran intensified after an explosion at the Natanz nuclear facility earlier this month. Iran blames Israel for the incident and vowed to take revenge. Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement in the Natanz incident. Recent months has also seen a number of attacks on Israeli and Iranian-owned ships. An Israeli owned commercial ship, Hyperion Ray, was targeted earlier this month by Iran off the UAE coast in a suspected revenge attack. Damage was minor. Israel is on high alert at its borders and sea.

Coalition negotiations update BY JAMES MARLOW

BLOC FOR CHANGE HAVE BIBI ON THE ROPES

After a dramatic vote last Monday night in which the Likud lost control of the Knesset and its committees, Binyamin Netanyahu is being urged to use the remaining time he has, to continue to find a way to form a government and not throw in the towel. With Yamina and the Religious Zionists, Netanyahu has 59 seats, just 2 short of a majority. The mandate to reach a coalition of at least 61 mandates expires on 4 May and Religious Zionists, continue to refuse to accept outside government support from the Arab Ra’am party. The Arrangements Committee is the first Knesset committee to be formed after an election. It has full control of the legislative agenda in the new parliament, until a government is formed and includes forming other parliamentary committees and who will serve on them. The anti-Netanyahu bloc won the vote and could now pass legislation to prevent a candidate who is under indictment from forming a government. Hours after Likud suffered the surprise defeat, the party’s faction chief, MK Miki Zohar, said it was likely they were heading to the opposition. But the bloc for change still have many hurdles to cross. First, they have to unite behind one candidate, and there is no indication whether that person will be Lapid or Bennett as both are desperate for the job. Second, the bloc for change has to receive the mandate from President Rivlin and that is not guaranteed at this point. Third, they too have to reach 61 mandates to form a government and the simple maths says that it is not possible, without the Arab parties. Even if the Arabs support a government led by Lapid or Bennett, it is almost impossible to imagine that parties from across the political spectrum, would agree on anything, other than “Anyone but Bibi.” Yamina, New Hope and Yisrael Beitenu

Even if the Arabs support a government led by Lapid or Bennett, it is almost impossible to imagine that parties from across the political spectrum, would agree on anything, other than “Anyone but Bibi.” on the right, Yesh Atid, Blue and White on the left and Labor with Meretz on the far left is unlikely to last for long. Don’t forget, this “coalition for change” must also come with support from the Arabs parties either from within or outside the government. What can they possibly agree on? Ministerial posts? The budget? Social and economic policies? The economy, investment, funding for veterans? What about the continuation of the vaccination programme and the import of more jabs? Do you think they will agree on Arab sector funding or decisions on whether the Palestinians can vote throughout Jerusalem for the upcoming Palestinian elections? The list goes on and I have not even mentioned rockets from Gaza, the Iranian threat or American foreign policy. Let’s remember in last Monday’s vote, the four MK’s from Ra’am, waited outside the plenum, suggesting they were going to

ELECTION NEWS BRIEFS: • Members of the Knesset Arrangements Committee from the bloc for change, have met on how to force the current chair, Micky Zohar of the Likud, to hold a vote on forming Knesset committees. Opponents of Netanyahu won control of the committee last Monday night after the proposal submitted by Yesh Atid on the make-up of the panel, passed in a plenum vote. It came after the bid submitted by the Likud has been defeated. • Yesh Atid leader met in the Knesset this week with the leaders of the Joint List, Ayman Odeh and

Ahmed Tibi. At a press conference, Lapid called to form an Israeli unity government with three right wing parties (Yamina, Yisrael Beitenu, New Hope) two centre parties (Yesh Atid, Blue White) and two left wing parties (Labor, Meretz). For those keeping the numbers, these 7 parties only reach a total of 58 seats. • MK Tamar Zandberg of Meretz said her party would agree to be in a government headed by Naftali Bennett. She said, “We will find ourselves in a situation that we would never imagine” if

abstain from the motion. But on the second role call, they entered and voted for Yair Lapid’s proposal. In exchange for their support, Lapid promised Ra’am head Mansour Abbas, a seat on the Knesset Finance Committee, a deputy Knesset speaker position for one of its lawmakers and a committee chair on combatting violence in the Arab community, if he forms a government. Abbas later told Channel 12 News, “We wanted to keep our role holding the balance of power in the Knesset and show we are not in the pocket of any bloc”. The Ra’am leader also stressed that he was angry at Smotrich and Ben-Gvir for their constant attacks on him and that he is only driven by advancing the interests of Arab society and a solution to its burning problems.

THE RIGHT WING BLOC HAS 72 SEATS

In the years when the right were united and in power, their leaders brought about Netanyahu forms a right wing bloc. But stressed, “Although we will accept things that in the past we might never have imagine, all sides will have to make compromises.” • Shas leader Aryeh Deri was behind the initiative to hold another election, but only for Prime Minister. Such an election, according to previous polls, has consistently suggested Netanyahu would win, although by less than 50%. Deri wanted to introduce the motion in the Knesset last Monday, but votes on the Arrangements Committee relegated this idea to the fire of insignificance. Besides the result would alter the stalemate in the Knesset as the anti-Bibi bloc would reject the outcome. In any

a series of steps including the pursuit of sovereignty, identity and tradition. Former Likud MK Gideon Sa’ar bolstered the connection between Israel’s schoolchildren and their heritage, when as Education Minister, he introduced visits by schools to the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron. Binyamin Netanyahu prevented the creation of a Palestinian State under former president Barrack Obama’s administration. As Defence Minister, Avigdor Liberman promoted the granting of building permits for thousands of housing units in Judea and Samaria. When Naftali Bennett became Defence Minister, he prevented the release of terrorists and discontinued various gestures made to the Palestinian Authority. Bezalel Smotrich acted to amend the justice system. But today, some on the right, actively work against each other and fail to represent and implement the desire and clear expression, of those who voted last month. Unless the right parties cease their stubborn refusal to join hands as part of a united and stable right-wing government, the citizens of Israel will be forced to go back to the polls over and over again, and Israel’s international standing as a strong and robust democracy will deteriorate. A Right-Centre-Left-Arab government does not express the will of the people of Israel. How will it stand up to the new administration in the White House with a determined ideological backbone in the face of pressure? Is Israel ready to make more gestures and concessions? Or political arrangements and withdrawals, which could pose an existential threat to Israel’s future? By playing politics under the banner of “Anyone but Bibi”, Israel will come under such pressure, with firm European Union’s support and enthusiastic applause from Israel’s left. The people voted for a right wing government with a determined political vision that promotes the true and fundamental values of the national camp. The magnitude of the hour has arrived. The gravity of responsibility on right wing leaders, is on your shoulders, to bring about the formation of a broad, strong and democratic government. If not, Israel will head to its fifth election. case, Benny Gantz of the Blue and White immediately rejected the motion stating, “It is called changing the rules of the game during the game”. • Ra’am (Arab) leader Mansour Abbas said he could support a government led by Naftali Bennett. • Religious Zionists head Betzalel Smotrich says the public wants a right wing government. “But relying on those who support terror would endanger Israel” referring to Ra’am. Smotrich added, “Despite confused voices on the right, no one really backs a right wing government relying on Ra’am. “Not even Yamina or New Hope.”

What is International Law? Part one OPINION PIECE BY JAMES J MARLOW The International Criminal Court in The Hague does NOT have the authority to probe Israel’s action in the West Bank and Gaza, and Israel is quite right to refuse to cooperate with the investigation. Two out of the three ICC judges decided to open a probe into events from 13 June, 2014. But on 12 June, Palestinian Hamas kidnapped Israeli teenagers, Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Shaer and Eyal Yifrach, and murdered them. Israel had been under attack with rocket fire from Gaza for a number of weeks and finally retaliated with its military might on 13 June. But for some strange reason the ICC decided that the events leading to Israel’s retaliation was not in the public interest. Many have asked if Israel has nothing to hide, an ICC probe should surely be welcomed? But the court was never set up to investigate countries, it was created to investigate war criminals. By deciding to go after Israel and its soldiers, the International Criminal Court is acting against the very reasons the court was set up.

So let’s discuss international law. There is no such thing as a world government or a world court or even a world legislator. The concept of international law began shortly after WWII when governments from across the world decided, they had to find a way to all work together and agree on certain principles. So the basis of international law, began with agreements and treaties, like the Geneva Convention. Therefore, international law received its legitimacy and credibility, because all the countries involved, agreed to abide by it. Discussing international courts, is not like discussing courts in the legislative sense. When an elected government legislates, courts can sometimes interpret those laws. But an international court is different because it is a body that mediates treaties and deals with treaty disputes. There are between, 195 to 215 countries in the world, depending on how one defines a country. Out of those, 123 of them pledged to work together by signing an agreement called, The Rome Statue and thus created an international court. But nearly half of the world, including the United States and Israel did not sign up to the agreement.

HaGaon HaRav Lippa Rabinowitz Zt”l

This is the first time in the history of international law that a country who never agreed to the rules of the Rome Statue is being subjected to the terms of that treaty, besides the exceptions listed above in Chapter 7. Israel regularly investigates all of its military activities and is quite capable of carrying out any investigations needed by itself. It has proved this as a matter of course, time and time again. The ICC was formed in the image of the courts of the Nuremburg trials that brought Nazis to justice. But from Nuremburg to The Hague, things have been turned upside down. To conclude with a quote from Prime Minister Netanyahu, “A body formed to defend human rights, has become a body that in actuality, defends those that trample on human rights.” PART 2 of this two part piece will be printed next week James Marlow is a broadcast commentator and communications trainer Facebook: James Jeremy Marlow Twitter: @James_J_Marlow

The Rome Statue itself says, if anything happens within the territorial boundaries of a member nation, then that member can sue in the ICC regardless of who was responsible. Two of the three judges concluded that Palestine does have territory, although they declared that under the Rome Statue, Palestine is not a full independent state, but is “enough of a country”, that has territory. Therefore because Israel entered that territory, it is now subject under the jurisdiction of the ICC. There are certain and very limited exceptions listed in Chapter 7 where legally, the ICC would have jurisdiction. For example, United Nations Security Council resolutions would allow the UN to take action against a person or nation, who did not sign the treaty. This could be a war criminal, like the former Sudan President Omar Al Bashir, or the decision that led to coalition forces ousting Iraqi troops from Kuwait in 1991. This is one reason why huge protections were put in place for permanent members of the Security Council to have a veto. If a nation did not agree to a treaty, but action was still brought against it, there had to be protections put in place.

He married the daughter of Harav Eliyhau Kushelevsky zt”l rav in Be’er Sheva, and then settled in Manchester, where he served as principal of Manchester’s Jewish Grammar School for Boys for decades. Rav Rabinowitz was also the Rabbi of the Rumainisher Shul on Vine Street. Around 15 years ago he emigrated to Eretz Yisrael where he opened and led a Kollel in Shaarei Chesed. Rav Lippa leaves behind a family who are following in his great ways.

Israel is once again firmly in world headlines. Indeed, our homeland rarely stays away from the news for long. This week it has been bashed right, left and centre, across the world. As our front page proudly demonstrates, Israeli Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely rightly stood up to the unacceptable and clearly biased BBC attack against Israel concerning Palestinian vaccinations, and the two-state solution dream. Who was the BBC presenter? Emily Maitlis, a Jew. Across the pond, another huge critic of Israel, Senator Bernie Sanders, a Jew, who is remembered for failing to become America’s President on multiple occasions, gave a vicious interview calling for the American government to stop sending copious amounts of money to Israel, as the way they treat the Palestinians is wrong, and they have no right to build houses in the West Bank etc. Another sad example of a Jew pushing hard to accuse Israel of crimes and deprive them of desperately needed cash. Furthermore, JNF Israel Branch have been criticised for attempting to buy land in a Jewish state. A state just 17 miles wide at one point, compared to vast surrounding Arab lands, none of which seem terribly interested in ever taking in their Palestinian ‘brothers.’ Left wing liberal and reform movements, and secular newspapers in both

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

the UK and the US have condemned the action to buy land ‘over the green line’ and have called for this to be boycotted, as this challenges the dream of the ‘twostate- solution.’ These newspapers have even run adverts asking for boycotts, and the Masorti movement have previously claimed this move would damage Israel’s ‘very existence.’ Jews fighting Jews! For the Palestinian cause! I wonder if these same Jews who feel comfortable saying the Kaddish prayer for Hamas terrorists were banned from ever entering Israel, would they change their minds? Why should they be allowed to go happily to hotels in Tel Aviv, and resorts in Eliat? The Palestinians and their supporters want those places as well, they want the whole land, from the river to the sea, and the entire rest of the Middle East that they live in is apparently not big enough for them. At least we can take some comfort in the knowledge that Bernie will never be the President of America.

Eichmann capture was a “ BY DAVID SAFFER The 60th anniversary of Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann’s historic trial in Jerusalem was recalled in a memorable discussion on YouTube last Sunday. Tamar Hausner-Raveh, daughter of chief prosecutor, Gideon Hausner, longest-serving Nazi criminal prosecutor, Eli Rosenbaum, Mossad expert Avner Avraham and Holocaust educator Shula Bahat analysed all aspects of the landmark trial that started in April 1961. Eichmann was a pivotal figure in the mass deportation of millions of Jews to concentration camps during the Holocaust. Chief architect of the Hitler’s ‘final solution’, following his abduction by Mossad in Argentina on 11 May 1960, Eichmann’s trial sparked global interest and heightened public awareness of the Shoah. Broadcast around the world, Eichmann’s trial was held at Jerusalem District Court presided over by Judges Moshe Landau, Benjamin Halevy and Yitzhak Raveh. Eichmann was tried on 15 counts. Counts 1–4 were for crimes against the Jewish people. Counts 5–7 were for crimes against humanity against Jews. Count 8 was for war crimes, based on Eichmann’s role in the systematic persecution and murder of Jews. Counts 9–12 related to crimes against humanity against non-Jews. Counts 13–15 charged Eichmann with membership of the Storm Troopers (SS), Security Service (SD) and Gestapo. Hausner called over 100 witnesses, most had never met Eichmann, who testified behind protected glass due to possible assassination attempts. Archive footage captured Hausener’s opening statement at the trial. “As I stand here before you, the judges of Israel, to lead the prosecution of Adolf Eichmann, I do not stand alone,” he said. “With me in this place and at this hour, stand six million accusers. But they cannot rise to their feet and point an accusing finger toward the man who sits in the glass dock and cry, I accuse! For their ashes were piled up in the hills off Auschwitz, and in the fields of Treblinka, or washed away by the rivers of Poland. Their graves are scattered over the length and breadth of Europe. Their blood cries out but their voices are not heard. Therefore, it falls to me to be their spokesman and to unfold in their name the awesome indictment.” Hausner-Raveh recalled the time of the trial including when witnesses came to her parent’s home including Yehiel De-Nur who had a first hand connection to Eichmann. “There was the prosecution team, the police formed a special unit to gather documents,” she noted. “It was a very tough job, there was no internet, only archives, they had to dig and find all the evidence. My father decided the trial would be different to the Nuremberg trial. He wanted witnesses to be heard, to tell the world the horrors they went through.

Top: Eichmann’s capture. Above left: tears on hearing the verdict. Right: Golda Meir in court

“My father wanted (De-Nur) to testify but he (De-Nur) did not know if he could take it (the cross examination). My father invited him to our home with his wife and my mother prepared tea and coffee. They closed the living room doors but my brother and I could hear his story. He didn’t want to testify as his stories were unbelievable, judges would not believe him. Eichmann at one point took his visa and shouted at him, “dirty Jew, you stay here”. Yehiel eventually did testify but in an iconic moment of the trial collapsed on the witness stand. “These are the clothes worn on planet ‘Auschwitz’,” Yehiel recalled, after being shown the infamous striped clothing on the stand. “It is a chronicle of planet Auschwitz.

did not have parents nor children. They dressed differently than the people dress here. They were not born there, not bear children there. They breathed under different natural laws. They did not live according to the natural laws of this world, nor die accordingly.” De-Nur collapsed at this point. Bahat has felt a connection to the Eichmann trial as she was born two days after Hitler’s ‘final solution’ was planned at the Wannsee conference in January 1942. At the time of the trial in Jerusalem, she was an officer in IDF and was in court to hear De-Nur. “I heard about the trial, but it was impossible to get in,” she recalled. “I went to my commander, who was a Holocaust survivor. It was my role to go as an educator. I went with my commander. I was there when Yehiel collapsed. That event, I will never forget, it transformed me. I looked at my parents as heroes, as people from an important chapter of Jewish and human history.” Bahat added, “The Operation Finale exhibition is my platform to educate and create programs relating to the Holocaust and notion that a small 12-year-old country took it upon itself to pursue justice.” Rosenbaum is the longest-serving prosecutor and investigator of Nazi criminals and perpetrators of human rights violations in world history, having worked on cases at the U.S. Department of Justice for nearly 40 years. Under his leadership, the U.S. Justice Department program has won more World War Two Nazi cases than all law enforcement authorities in countries of the world combined according to the Washington Post. In the 1960s, he started to learn about the Holocaust and read about the Eichmann trial. “I’m privileged to have met some of the people who brought Eichmann to justice and witnesses,” Rosenbaum noted. “The Eichmann trial was one of the first where witnesses were a key to the case but we are about at the end point of law enforcement and justice in these cases. “Although the Eichmann trial itself was in so many ways an enormous success, a seminal event in world jurisprudential, Israeli and Jewish history, the rest of the world has done not nearly as well. When we look back now, we see that the vast majority of perpetrators of Nazi crimes include especially the Shoah, went unpunished.”

Going back to when Eichmann was captured, he added, “A huge percentage of Israel’s population were survivors and escapees from Nazi Europe. It’s hard to imagine now but if you spoke Yiddish or German you did not need to learn Hebrew. The country was fighting for its survival every single day. They had universal military service and survivors in general did not feel comfortable speaking about their ghastly experiences. There was a sense they would be looked down upon for not having fought back but the trial changed everything. It was the first trial televised live in world history, it was broadcast in Israel on television and radio. Highlights were made

Eichmann in Prison

available to broadcasters around the world by ABC. In my country, including New York, there was a nightly video recap of the trial. It changed history, survivors spoke out, they were the heroes of that trial. People were willing to open terrible wounds that cannot heal for the benefit of informing the court and world’s public about the horrors of the Holocaust. “The trial in Israel of a Nazi criminal proved it was possible to obtain justice. The court and prosecution did a great job ensuring Eichmann’s rights were respected. It showed an invaluable historical record could be built in the course of a trial. In my office, we have used some of the captured Nazi records amassed by the prosecution team. “From a historical perspective, the Eichmann trial revived interest around the world in the Holocaust itself and the possibility of pursuing justice. There was very little being done by the time Eichmann was apprehended. In the wake of the trial, there was a revival in prosecutorial interest especially in what was West Germany led by Fritz Bauer, the German Jewish prosecutor who pressed Mossad and Israeli government to bring Eichmann to Israel.” Bahat believes that the Holocaust should be presented not just about the Shoah but also with other historical moments including the trial and exodus from Egypt. “At Pesach, we talk about milestones as it's part of our history,” she said. “It’s important to tell the Eichmann story. There are so many aspects not known. It’s our responsibility to tell the story through films, exhibitions or telling our story. I tell my grandchildren real stories of their grandparents, of myself. You have to adapt the story to the age group of people but you must tell it in different ways. And not just about the victims but those who fought the Nazis, the Germans who came out of the experience loving Israel and Jews. There are many dimensions we have to address.” She added, “The enormity of this evil, the incomprehensibility of it, it’s impossible to wrap your arms around it. The Holocaust is still current history, it’s

Yhiel De-Nur and Rivka Yoselevska giving evidence in court

of the 20th century. We have to constantly think about how to bring the subject to the fore. We need to find different ways and platforms to continue to tell the story so it will not happen again and won’t be forgotten.” Rosenbaum noted that Holocaust deniers have had little success. “The reality of the Holocaust is well established,” he said. “The heavy lifting was done by the survivors in their public speaking, in recorded testimonies, books and presentations to classes throughout the free world.” Rosenbaum added, “Prosecutors have played an important role starting at Nuremberg where they proved the mass murder of six million Jewish civilians primarily through documents but also through the testimony of two survivors. The trial was filmed and audio recorded, they archived evidence and sent to depositories copies of the documents

used all over the world. That tradition was followed at the Eichmann trial. The trial was videoed and audio recorded, documents are maintained in Israel. The trial record was published in English in a multi volume set, the last of which as a microfiche of all the evidence. In our office, we have tried to emulate what was done at Nuremberg and the Eichmann trial by donating our trial transcripts, more than 50,000 pages in English to the US Holocaust memorial museum.” The expert panel offered thoughts on aspects yielded from the trial that are underestimated. Bahat noted, “My mother died symbolically on Yom Hashoah, she spent as much time crying about her family lost, as she was CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

Avraham curated the world-famous museum exhibition “Operation Finale: The Capture and Trial of Adolf Eichmann” and produced an accompanying documentary. Bahat is CEO of ANU Museum of the Jewish People (Beit Hatfutsot) in America and adapted the Operation Finale exhibition to understand the importance of the Eichmann trial.

None of that generation, those that survived concentration camps and those that survived the loss of family ever had an opportunity to deal with their feelings. The trial opened that kind of treatment, speaking about the Holocaust, speaking about the experiences they went through.” Bahat wondered why there had not been more trials of major Nazi operatives? Avraham commented, “Prime Minister David Ben Gurion did not want Mossad to deal with just the Nazis or hang all the Nazis in Jerusalem, one big trial was enough. Eichmann was that, he was a good example (of the Nazis) as he was the architect of the Holocaust.” Rosenbaum noted that the trial of Eichamnn was seen in America and viewed as a remarkable accomplishment. “We have records of the CIA pertaining to Eichmann and there are extraordinary communications reflected in the documents,” he said. “One of the accomplishments was it was so secret even the CIA did not figure out what the Israelis were up to. When Eichmann’s capture was announced by Ben Gurion, it was front page news all over the free world and no one was more amazed that Alan Dulles, the legendary CIA director. “You see the documents reflecting his personal interest in finding out how on earth this little country could have located Eichmann and captured him thousands of miles away in Latin America. A CIA officer contacted his opposition number at the Israeli Embassy and took him on a car ride around Washington devoted to congratulating him but mostly trying to get some detail how it was done for Dulles!” Rosenbaum added, “For younger audiences, you can hardly imagine what a giant news story Eichmann was. Front page headlines from the duration of his capture to execution. Were it not for the fact that the Soviet’s had put the first person in space (Yuri Gagarin) the same day Eichmann was captured, it would have been the number one story in the world. And but for the Nuremberg trial it would have been the number one trial of the century.” Regarding comments that Israel should have tried more Nazi criminals, Rosenbaum set the record straight. “Israel could not fairly be asked to be the dumping ground for all surviving Nazi criminals,” he said. “The obligation to bring them to justice was a European one, principally Germany and Austria, where most perpetrators remained after the war. The fact that most of the perpetrators got away is tragic and the responsibility lays principally with the governments of Germany and Austria, it’s a sad reality.” Bahat recounted that Abba Eban, like Dulles, was surprised at the capture of Eichmann. “Eban and Dalles had a lot to talk about in terms of who was more surprised,” she noted. “The accomplishment is something that must be told. I have not seen a children’s story that speaks about it. I will bring it up with publishers in the US. It should make Jews and non-Jews alike proud of this accomplishment.”

Rosenbaum is of the view that the world is still awaiting to see a good documentary of the trial but there is video footage of the proceedings. He noted, “There are extraordinary, dramatic and important moments of the trial including Eichmann actually having the audacity on the witness stand to state he was a victim. But Hausner did not let him get away with that! There was also a famous episode elicited in the testimony from a survivor when he last saw his daughter wearing a red coat which later was the basis of a famous

scene in Schindler’s list.” In their concluding comments, more revelations came to light after the Eichmann story but the overriding message was the importance of the tale. Avraham noted, “I met an 87-year old woman who developed all the pictures for Mossad. She lived in Bueno Aires. A member of the Jewish community told them to escape to Israel as it was dangerous. Over 100 people took part in the operation. It’s an amazing story. Over 100,000 people have seen the exhibition.”

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

22 APRIL 2021 He added, “The story of Mossad is the story of the Jewish people. The 11 agents in the operation came from different places. Our weapons are our languages. The agents came with fake European passports. Mossad matched the languages and faces to the passports. The Nazis tried to kill the Jewish people but we come from all over the world. Most of the agents were European, only Rafi Etan (who led the team) that captured Eichmann was a Sabre in the team.” Bahat commented, “The gloves (Zvi Malkin) used to capture Eichmann, he held them for many years. He (Malkin) became an artist and made five copies in a sculpture. The story is diverse and intricate, and we have not covered it all.” Rosenbaum gave the final observation and recounted a remarkable story about Ben Gurion that he heard a few years ago. “A few hours before Ben Gurion revealed to Israel’s Parliament, the Knesset, and therefore the world, that Eichmann was found alive, had been captured, was in Israel and would stand trial, he held an emergency cabinet meeting. Ministers were flabbergasted, many wanted to know how it was possible. Ben Gurion told them that’s what you have intelligence services for. Another cabinet member suggested a presentation should be made Mossad agents but there were no medals. Ben Gurion then said the reward for a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself!” Eichmann’s capture and trial has been recalled in books, documentaries and films through the decades. Arrested by American authorities after World War Two and held in detention camps for SS members, Eichmann evaded suspicion by using fake identity papers. Eichmann fled to Argentina, living under an assumed name Ricardo Klement. His family joined him where he lived quietly and worked in a Mercedes-Benz factory in Buenos Aires. Tipped off by German justice official Fritz Bauer, Ben-Gurion vowed to make Eichmann account for his crimes as other Nazis had in the Nuremburg trials. After a daring operation, on May 20, 1960, Mossad kidnapped Eichmann outside his home. The capture was global news. Eichmann at the trial stated he had not dictated policy, just carried it out. He was “a little cog in the machinery” of destruction. “I could not anticipate,” he recalled. “I could not influence. My status was too modest.” But on his last day of testimony, Eichmann finally admitted his role in transporting millions of Jews to their deaths, but felt no guilt. On December 12, 1961, Eichmann was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to death. The Supreme Court rejected Eichmann’s appeal. President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi rejected his request to commute the sentence. Eichmann was executed at Ramla Prison by hanging on June 1, 1962. His ashes were spread at sea outside Israel’s territorial waters. Hausner later wrote that archival documents would have sufficed to get Eichmann sentenced “ten times over”. Eichmann’s execution is the only time Israel has carried out a death sentence. The Association of Jewish Refugees and 3GNY brought together the panel for the event chaired by lawyer James Libson.

North’s jump to 3s was forcing, asking for a cue bid. When South cue bid in diamonds, North checked for key cards and, when the queen of spades was not in the South hand (5 shows two key cards and no Queen), he bid the small slam in spades. West led the queen of diamonds. Declarer took this with his ace and played two top clubs from the dummy, discarding his diamond loser. When clubs proved to be 4-2 or 3-3, declarer formed a plan that would make certain of his contract provided the trumps were no worse than 4-1 (as long as there was no heart ruff about). He continued with a trump to the king and the five of trumps towards dummy. When West followed, declarer finessed dummy’s Jack of trumps. After East discarded here, declarer cashed the ace of trumps and ran clubs from the top. Now, West could only make his queen of trumps. What would have happened if the jack of trumps lost to East’s queen? Simply, as only a club continuation would cause a problem; declarer would ruff the club exit with the ten and cross to the ace of trumps, drawing the last trump. He would make four trumps, two hearts, a diamond and five clubs for a total of twelve tricks. Finally, suppose that West had discarded on the second round of trumps. Declarer counters this by winning the trick with dummy’s ace of trumps and running the clubs through East. If East ruffs low at any point, declarer overruffs and crosses to the ace of hearts to play more clubs. When East ruffs in with the queen, declarer discards a heart, ruffs the diamond return and gets back to dummy with a heart ruff and run the clubs. If instead he ruffed in with the queen first, declarer wins his return and draw the last trump with dummy’s jack. So, no matter how East defends, declarer should make twelve tricks.

The exhibition runs until 24th April at the Mall Galleries, SW1, but will continue online after this date and all paintings are available for sale. As well as producing humorous paintings, Darius has also created work with Biblical themes depicting stories from the Torah. A series of 54 of his paintings relating to the Torah portions have also been used to illustrate a Children’s Torah in Berlin – the first such publication for the Jewish community in Germany since 1964. A painting, entitled ‘An Edgware Scene, 1974’ has been included in the annual exhibition at the RBA (Royal Society of British Artists) currently on display at the Mall Galleries in Central London. The piece, by Israel-based artist Darius Gilmont, depicts Jewish life as he remembers it growing up in North London, and shows two of his father’s friends greeting each other in the street on Yom Tov. “The meeting takes place outside my grandparents’ house, and my grandmother is watching the scene from behind the curtains, whilst my father eats peanuts.” Darius described his inclusion in the RBA

The incredible ‘GIFT’ that the Duke of Edinburgh left behind The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (commonly abbreviated DofE) is a youth awards’ programme founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, of blessed memory, that has since expanded to 144 nations. The awards recognise adolescents and young adults for completing a series of self-improvement exercises and is an incredible legacy that the Duke has left behind. Over 6 million young people in the UK have taken part in the DofE since 1956 (8 million worldwide). The participant needs to take part in a physical activity, a skill, an expedition and a period of volunteering. GIFTs volunteer coordinator Keren Heller explains, “For many years now, GIFT have been offering a plethora of DofE volunteering opportunities for bronze, silver and gold, and during lockdown has been no different; interestingly lockdown saw many of our university students completing their Gold DofE Awards.” GIFT’s remote opportunities are:•Baking for the homeless, GIFT volunteers take the baked goods to the organisation Rhythms Of Dee Life each week to distribute to the homeless. •Making cards and motivational posters for Jewish Care residents; •Becoming an email penpal with a Kisharon student. In-person opportunities include - Food support packing sessions each week after school at the GIFT Hub in North West London (limited numbers). - Helping Hand.. volunteer to help children once a week in your local area to give respite to the parents. 14 year old Monty Savarino from Halliford School in Shepperton, Surrey heard about GIFT from his Richmond Synagogue. Monty has been making up homeless bags each week, bringing them to the GIFT Warehouse. He told us

Kisharon welcomes new trustees BY ADAM MOSES

Young GIFT volunteer Monty Savarino

“When I was given the opportunity to do some volunteering I didn’t really know what it was all about until the day I started doing it. When I go into London all I see are homeless people and I always ask myself why? Maybe it’s because their family just gave up on them or they lived a difficult life and didn’t have anyone to rely on. Who knows why but I can assure you that seeing them got me thinking quite a bit. Whatever the reason, they certainly don’t deserve to live the way they do. They don’t deserve to live on the streets of London begging to actually get some money. So I thought hard about it and asked myself what could I do to help them out. Well, I like cooking and so I realized that baking cookies or cakes would be a good solution. I now regularly give food to GIFT to pass on to the homeless and I am happy to say that I am proud of myself because helping the less fortunate can help me understand life a little bit better and make a difference.” To sign up for your DofE project through GIFT, email Keren at volunteer@jgift.org or phone 0208 457 4429

Kisharon has welcomed five new members to their board of Trustees. Corrin Kaye, Victoria Hart and Claire Lemer join Kisharon's main board of Trustees. Deborah Stone and Alan Moss are now part of the Kisharon School board of Trustees. Kisharon bids farewell to existing board member, Joe Coogan, who is stepping down after almost six years of service. New appointments have met with Kisharon chairman, Philip Goldberg, and an independently facilitated nomination panel. They come into post prior to Kisharon’s charity Extra fundraiser at the beginning of May. Chief Executive Richard Franklin commented, “The new trustees have achieved excellence in their respective fields and combine this with a passion for learning disabilities and a desire to enrich the lives of others.” Kaye is an experienced global HR and reward director in financial and professional services, with an MSC in Occupational Psychology. “Offering support for children and adults with disabilities, along with their families, to ensure they are given the same life opportunities as their mainstream peers, was what particularly drew me to Kisharon,” she noted. “I have an overwhelming sense of driving positive change.”

Hart, a forensic social worker and former lead CQC inspector, she is currently undertaking a professional doctorate in social work. “I’ve been aware of the fantastic work Kisharon has been doing for many years and during this time when community become so valuable and important,” she said. “I felt I could offer something back with my experience in the sector.” Lemer, a consultant paediatrician and Clinical Director for Medicine at Evelina London, added, “I am fascinated by the holistic support that Kisharon offers to families. I look forward to assisting and bringing my skill set to the table in developing transition support and making sure that the voice of young people is heard in decision making.” Moss is an experienced financial services director. He said, “I wanted to be involved with an organisation that made a difference, not just today, tomorrow but also for the future. Kisharon offers the opportunity for each and every child to have the opportunity to maximise their potential.” Stone is a management expert in education and industry, he added, “Coming as a parent, an educator, and School Governor, I understand the challenges and opportunities that the school faces, as it moves forward into a post pandemic and changing world.”

An overhaul of American policing is long overdue. George Floyd has proven that. BY JACQUELINE CURZON In this week's news I read a report that Neil Woodford and his business partner Craig Newman awarded themselves dividends of 975k and 575k respectively, in the 2 months before his investment fund was suspended, leaving 300,000 investors trapped as their savings are depleted. They claim they had no inkling that the fund would be suspended, but experts say that is duplicitous given their accounts showed a loss of more than £6 million in the year to April 2020, versus a profit Jacqueline Curzon of £16.3 million the previous year. Two men in Texas have died whilst allowing their Tesla to self-drive. The car was traveling at high speed when it failed to negotiate a bend, crashed into a tree and caught fire. Here in the UK, the Law Commission is drawing up a framework for autonomous vehicles. According to a 2019 study from the Georgia Institute of Technology, self-driving cars were more likely to drive into black people, because the sensors and cameras were better at detecting people with lighter skin. Now, I remember walking to school in the winter, wearing reflective armbands (still have them somewhere) because drivers wouldn’t easily see us in a dark coat, in the darkness. Okay, you ask, ‘how dark could it be?’ DARK - if you’ve ever seen a Scottish winter’s morning at 8am, you’d know. This need for reflective illumination was regardless of one’s skin colour; drivers were just unlikely to process a dark shadow at any speed. Anyway, the Law Commission deems modern cars ‘racist’ if they are unable to identify black skin tone, but perhaps more of concern are the numbers of people wandering across the roads, heads down, preoccupied with whatever interesting activity their phone presents. Now that could get you killed…. In the USA former policeman Derek Chauvin (45) has been found guilty of the murder of George Floyd. This verdict will be universally welcomed, as there could never have been a case for putting a knee on somebody’s neck and causing their death. All of this over a fake $20 bill, and with a man handcuffed, not resisting or being violent. It was outside the police restraint guidelines, and Chauvin

should have anticipated it would result in serious injury or death. Sentencing will take place in eight weeks, and irrespective of the outcome, be it 40, 25 or 10 years, it will send the strongest message to any others so inclined. George Floyd was only 46 and his life was summarily ended in 9 minutes, 29 seconds. Liam Scarlett (35), who has died suddenly, was a leading light in choreography with the Royal Ballet. His death was announced only hours after Denmark's leading theatre - the Copenhagen - terminated its contract with him. He had taught at Royal Opera House and the Royal Ballet School. He was born to parents Deborah and Laurence Scarlett, and started dancing at the age of 4, winning a place at age 11, at The Royal Ballet School. At 22 the young and elegant Liam was promoted to First Artist, but it was in choreography that he made his path. He created Ballet Boyz to foster his love of contemporary works and won all the choreographic prizes, including the Kenneth MacMillan and Ursula Moreton prizes. One of his legacies is the 2018 romantic production of Swan Lake at Royal Ballet, likely to remain in the light of cost and its audience popularity. Russian dancer Alexei Ratmansky blamed the ‘cancel culture’ for Scarlett's death. An update on Alexei Navalny reports that he is now in a critical condition, three weeks into his hunger strike at being denied the right to be seen by a civilian doctor. He has critically high potassium levels, which by themselves are enough to cause his death. His daughter has posted to their followers that her father is literally dying in front of their eyes, and Navalny further describes himself as a skeleton who would scare children. Olga Mikhailova, his lawyer, told reporters that he had become very weak, and demanded that he be transferred to a civilian hospital in Moscow to receive necessary assistance. Prison officials however describe his condition as satisfactory, but then they would say that, wouldn’t they? And finally, seven year old history buff Dylan Verey has unearthed a portrait of King Charles II, dated c.1660. The portrait had hung on his great grandparents wall, and was grimy with soup splashes. He persuaded his mother to take it to The Repair Shop, BBC One's restoration programme, where it was restored along with its considerable gilded frame. Lucia Scalisi, the painting conservator, and previously a specialist at the V&A, described it as a remarkable find, and museum-worthy. Well done, Dylan. Love Jacqueline x

Eating out (side!) BY DENISE PHILLIPS Now that the Covid laws have eased slightly, eating out but outside will become more of a trend and social norm. Parks, your back garden, National Trust homes or even the Zoo will be places to consider to enjoy your picnic with friends and family. Catering in your back garden offers many options and this is what I would like to focus on. Assuming the weather is going to be kind and the forecast is NO rain you can prepare a cosy and comfortable setting to create a fine dining experience. Coloured, scented or citronella candles, tablecloths, cushions, blankets if it is cold all help to enhance the occasion. Having not entertained for so long I am really looking forward to dining in style albeit outside. Get the lighting right; there is a wide range of solar lights or plug in lights very reasonably priced available enabling you to dine on into the early evening without worrying that you can’t see. If you are dining during the day sit your guests out of the sun or under an umbrella. Or maybe you have an awning or shady section of the garden that will ensure your guest stay comfortable for as long as required. Use your mobile phone and download

a music ap or Spotify to quietly entertain your guests while they eat. Choose recipes that plate up into individual portions. Sharing plates in the middle of the table is not ‘Covid friendly’ and you want your guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in every way. Recipes like hot soup in fancy mugs are safer not bowls to prevent spillage, individual salmon platters, vegetable tartlets, frittata, stuffed mushrooms, peppers, or courgettes, rolled aubergine with feta cheese and pine nuts are all good starter options. Main courses like satays, schnitzel, salmon steaks, lamb cutlets, seabass/ seabream fillets, red cabbage or celeriac steaks and my recipe for Savoury Tricolour cake make dining straightforward. Plate up in the kitchen and transport to your garden on a tray. And of course if you have a BBQ take advantage of this option too. Desserts in a jar or cup cases work well. Eton mess, individual cheesecakes, flapjacks, one dish crumble, sweet tray bakes, chocolate brownies, individual puff pastry tartlets, crème brulee all work well. My website www.jewishcookery.com has over 600 recipes that you can download FREE.

Family Staycation at The Marriott Park Lane

The Bluestone family

BY CARON BLUESTONE One of the biggest luxuries that I miss because of covid is travel. Shopping, I can live without, but the opportunity to experience a change of scenery, a different culture or place, really gets me. I was one of the first out of Heathrow in July, taking the family to Ibiza for three blissful weeks and my plan is to flee the country in December to ski before the many schools break up, covid-permitting. As half-term loomed, Lake Como beconned, only to be nixed at the last minute as the air bridge to Italy was revoked. So, determined to travel, I started to look closer to home, so close, in fact, that we could have taken the 82 bus to our destination and been there within half an hour. It was staycation time! Time to experience London from a totally different angle; from a tourist’s perspective. Somehow the obvious sights of London had mostly eluded my children and in turn, us adults too. So, despite being just down the road, I booked a staycation weekend away. The Teddy Bear Butler Service at the London Marriott Park Lane had me sold within seconds. I’d no idea where exactly the hotel was, I couldn’t place it, but the concept was a winner. In partnership with Hamleys, children are welcomed with a Teddy bear menu. Eleven wonderful, London-themed bears, from Beefeater to soldier, ballet dancer to pilot. A detailed profile of each bear, giving the children plenty of information upon which to base their choice because one, plush bear is to become theirs. The hard work done, their bear is then delivered by a dedicated butler. The kids then have the option to order an in-room teddy bear’s picnic to be hosted in their room.

On request, kosher drinks, sandwiches and cupcakes plus at turndown, sweets, warm milk and cookies. Upon arrival, we found a very-much-boutique-style hotel, with its entrance tucked away in a small Mayfair Street, just off Park Lane. This is one of the Marriott’s five star properties and the luxury is obvious from the moment you walk through the doors. Cool marble, muted, neutral colours and a chic, yet homely decor greets the guests. The hotel’s collaboration with Penhaligon’s was also immediately apparent. Scented air then luxury toiletries await. From a covid-secure perspective, there are masks and hand gel at the entrance and a one way system in place throughout. All staff of course also wearing masks. We felt very safe indeed. Impressions went from strength to strength. Our second floor corner suite simply gleamed. Immaculate, newly refurbished, absolutely spotless, very luxurious, with a massive marble bathroom and separate, marble and mirrored guest toilet. The sitting room directly on the corner of Park Lane and Oxford Street with fantastic views to Marble Arch was arranged as the children’s bedroom. The plush sofa bed laid out with crisp white linen. Whilst I admired the views, the children leafed through the brand new children’s books left for them as welcome gifts and feasted on a fresh fruit salad that awaited them along with some goodies for the adults, on the full-sized dining table. This was going to be a fun week-end. With Primark mere steps away, Speaker’s Corner and Hyde Park across the road and Selfridges and Reubens for any extra, intra-meal, kosher requirements, mere minutes from us, we were set. For those wondering, the soundproofing, as you would expect at a property of this calibre, made for happy sleeping! Bags unpacked, we headed downstairs in our fluffy robes, slippers and swimwear. The hotel boasts a gorgeous, serene pool, spa and fitness room for healthy types. For

safety, only six guests are allowed to swim at any one time, so booking is essential. The pool, heated to almost-bath-temperature was ours and ours alone for all three swimming sessions. Pure bliss. We also made use of the sauna, such a luxury after long London walks in the Autumn chill. There’s a first time for everything and being a tourist in London is definitely an experience worth trying. With the hotel being so central, we walked everywhere. A mixture of far-to-much shopping (and three visits to Hamleys, no less), sight-seeing and fresh air in the park, the only time we used any form of transport other than our feet was on a Big Bus Tour. The best way to see a city is always the bus tour and Big Bus was the perfect tour. We arrived early, sat upstairs, under cover but in the open air and saw London from a completely new perspective; taking in sights unseen and learning plenty of new things about the ones that we thought we already knew so well. With seats blocked off, masks and plenty of sanitizing, we again felt totally safe. Each afternoon we headed back. A swim, time to relax in luxury. Just chilling. There’s something very indulgent about staying in a hotel close to home. Breakfasts and a huge tea were beyond delicious and all kosher requirements can be met if you

organise them in advance. The iconic Lanes of London restaurant, with space for tables to be very far apart, provided for a private dining feel and the staff were exceptionally professional and sensitive to the situation. The two days passed far too quickly. Our staycation had been a huge success. We packed up our new Hamleys bears and our now, overfilled suitcases and headed home in an Uber back to North London. From magical escape, to Finchley in the blink of an eye. If you are craving travel, craving an escape and some festive cheer, then The London Marriott Hotel Park Lane is your place! It’s a true, family destination. The Teddy Bear Butler service in partnership with Hamleys is complimentary to all families when booking a suite direct. With a background in hair and make-up and a good eye for style, she decided that the only way to find what she wanted was to make it herself. She began posting her designs on Facebook, and soon started to receive positive responses from other women wanting her help. This led to her eventually learning to make wigs from a professional wig-maker and setting up her own business, ‘Rafaelie Wigs’ seven years ago. Many of Natania’s clients from the Orthodox community are newly married women, and she understands how important it is to find the perfect wig that not only reflects their personalities and style, but that they feel comfortable and confident wearing. She also works with women who may have been married for many years, but still struggle with finding the perfect hair covering. “For religious women covering one’s hair can have a profound emotional and psychological effect. It’s a significant moment moving from being a single woman to a married woman and all that that entails. Being able to create something unique and special for each client as they start their married life is a great honour.” As well as Orthodox women, Natania also has clients who may be looking for wigs for other reasons such as overcoming hair loss due to various conditions such as alopecia or cancer treatment. She works with women and men from across many different backgrounds and ages, each with their own stories to share. During the pandemic, Natania has also worked with clients who have experience hair thinning as an effect of the virus. For some, wearing a wig can help them to regain their confidence and make them feel more like themselves again. “Last year, I was contacted by an 11-year-old girl who suffered from alopecia and was due to be returning to school and was nervous about it. She wanted something very different and out there – red dip-dye wavy wig. We created a headband that meant she could wear it without glue, tape, combs or clips, and it could be worn either up or down. It was so lovely seeing her confidence grow as she put it on for the first time, and it was very rewarding to know that I had been able to help her in this way.” Over the years, Natania has researched

Natania at work

the effect that acupuncture can have on encouraging hair growth in many cases, and how by wearing a wig during this time it can help reduce stress and build confidence. She has recently begun working alongside acupuncturist Albina Avigail Masteran offering ‘wellbeing packages’ which include a course of treatment alongside consultation and creation of a bespoke wig. No two wigs are the same, and Natania is involved in the design of every piece produced. She works with a small team

who help with sewing and colouring, and the whole process can take from around four weeks to many months depending on the style and work involved. She works closely with clients discussing every element including hair colour, style, weight and length to ensure that the final piece is perfect. The first part of the process is an initial consultation and fitting, where a mould is made of the client’s head to create a cap that will fit ‘like a glove’ and compliments the clients natural skin tone and hairline. The hair that is used for each wig is important and this can be quite a long process to prepare as all of the hair used has to be checked, examined and cleaned. Different hair has different properties which effects how it behaves, and most of the hair that Natania uses is virgin European or Brazilian hair which is very soft and excellent quality. As well as bespoke wigs, Natania has also created a range of ready-made wigs so clients can choose from a selection of pre-made wigs without any waiting time. She also offers a service to revamp existing pieces to give them a new lease of life and can transform a bandfall to a full wig or lace wig. During lockdown, she has also created accessories like hair scrunchies that are available to buy in a range of colours and can be worn with wigs or natural hair.

A satified customer

When selling any wig, she offers clients tips and advice to ensure that they last as long as possible. “The quality of the pieces I create, and the work that goes into them, mean that if cared for properly, they will continue to look good for around ten years.” Prior to lockdown, Natania would hold consultations with clients in her studio at her home in Edgware, but during recent times she has been working with clients virtually via video. As restrictions begin to ease, she is able to offer one-to-one appointments again all adhering to Covid-19 regulations. She current offers appointments on Monday to Friday during the day, as well as some evenings and Sundays if required, and is always happy to be flexible to work with clients to find the best times for them. Being able to create something that people enjoy wearing and makes them feel happy is something that Natania finds extremely rewarding and satisfying. She is always grateful when she receives positive feedback from clients about their new wigs and enjoys seeing the difference in her clients. “Whether it is for religious reasons or hair loss, having hair that looks good really boosts confidence. It is a great thing to see the transformation from when they initially come in to see me, and when they leave with their new hair piece. I feel very lucky that I am able to make a difference to people in this way.” To find out more, visit her Facebook page - www.facebook.com/rafaeliewig or Instagram - rafaeliewig.

ASK THE RABBI

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com SHALOM BAYIT

Dear Rabbi My wife is currently not talking to her mother. She is an only daughter, and with her father’s passing nearly a year ago, there was a lot of money from the life insurance. My wife is very upset that her mother hasn’t shared any of it with her, especially as we could really use it. I think I could intervene and restore the peace but I wonder from a strictly Jewish/halachic perspective, should one take sides in a family dispute, or just avoid it altogether. And if taking sides, under what would circumstances do you think that would be OK? Melvyn Dear Melvyn Peace is a supreme value. The ancient Rabbis famously tell us how we should strive to be like Aaron the High Priest, who loved peace and pursued peace. There is no reason to suggest that this didn’t include members of his own family. The Talmud (Yevomot 62b) discusses the merits of peacekeeping and includes “one who draws his relatives close.” One well-known Biblical story is when Miriam, sister of Moses, in sympathy with what she perceived as the plight of her sister-in-law Tziporah, sought to intervene. It didn’t quite go to plan. This teaches that inasmuch as one chooses to wade into a family dispute in the hope of restoring unity, there are bigger risks, hence greater sensitivity should be exercised and personal prejudices must not weigh in the equation. Some classic sources

(Maharal) state: “A person who turns to those who are close to him… and draws them closer is rewarded in kind… G-d declares, ‘I too am your Relative (karov),’… and He responds to that person’s own needs.” There is a famous Mishna we recite each morning as part of our prayer service which discusses rewards we receive in both this world and the next. One of the examples mentioned is one who makes peace between husband and wife or between friends, etc. On this, the Rabbis ask: “What is different about peace, versus everything else mentioned? They explain that many of the mitzvot require a certain time and place for their performance. Whereas the mitzvah of generating peace is not bound by any time, any place, or any specific circumstance. We have to continually strive to promote and maintain peace in our own lives and the lives of others. Taking sides has to be weighed up in balance and only with the objective of knowing you will be able to restore peace. If you are just going to be perceived as taking sides and exacerbating the situation then you are best to leave it alone. Finally, you might want to share with your wife and her mother the following: Someone once came crying to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, having fallen out with her mother over finances. The Rebbe, who was in the year of mourning for his mother, replied: “I lost my mother earlier this year. Do you know how much money I would give to have her back with me even

Pirkei Avot We have arrived at the third Perek of Pirkei Avot. Akavya son of Mahallel taught: Contemplate three facts and you will not be brought to the hands of sin – Know (1) From where you come – a mere drop, (2) Where you are headed – a place of worms and (3) In front of Whom you are destined to give a “Din Ve’Cheshbon” which literally means that when one gets “upstairs” they face the Heavenly Court in front of G-d, and one will then need to justify their (mis)deeds. There is much to say on this Mishnah.

for a few fleeting moments; and yet you are not talking to your mother because of money?”

MARRYING OUT…

Dear Rabbi My daughter is dating a non-Jewish boy. As much as he talks about converting, I know that will never happen. Is there something I could say to her that will make enough of a difference so that she doesn’t shame the family like this? Sandra Dear Sandra This is not about shaming the family. That sounds simply selfish. Sparing your blushes at the expense of her love? If you start on that premise you’ve lost the argument before you started. This is about abandoning the faith and forsaking her whole future. There is a balance that has to be struck between maintaining a strong stance against intermarriage - in defence of the sacredness of Jewish marriage, heritage and future — and never, ever shutting the door in the face of those who may have veered off the traditional path. While much damage has been done, we are not past the point of no return. I should add that even if he was to convert, it is not a viable option. If someone marries out and then looks to sanction the relationship through some slapstick conversion process, it makes a mockery of the religion in general. Only a sincere conversion out of genuine conviction and absolute commitment is acceptable. I received a letter from one

reader of this column in which she enclosed a very touching poem that she sent to her daughter in similar circumstances. I think it says everything. If the author of that poem and letter is reading this, though she only signed off with her first name I want to record my thanks to her for sharing it, and to assure her and you that your children are in all our prayers: Our achievement as Jews, throughout every generation Are nothing short of something that is so incredible you cannot explain It is not logic at all And some are scared by that and treat us with disdain; You cannot let your heritage Rich and true Just slip away

May you inspire, With something of who you are And know that there is always an open door For you to learn more And play a part in the future of your people Justly proud of its past and present And confident in its future.

Perek 3: Mishna 1

the actual sins one committed. A “Cheshbon” on the other hand, is the “reckoning” of the time one spent doing the sin. This means that a person is also held accountable for what they could have achieved in the time spent looking at forbidden sights or gossiping about another Jew. In a similar vein, Rabbi Ephraim Wachsman once suggested that a person should have an “Internet Masechta” – a tractate of Mishnayot or Gemara which one learns in the time that they previously spent “just checking out” unnecessary or inappropriate websites. Time is precious.

For Refuah Shalema for Mordechai Ben Chaya Sara One explanation is that Akavaya was teaching that by contemplating these three matters, one does not come to the “hands of sin”. This means a person should be conscious of these realities before one is placed in temptation’s hands. Once one is already in the grip of the evil inclination it can be much harder to resist sin. Our job in life is to try to avoid situations of sin. A second crucial teaching was revealed by the Gaon of Vilna, who explained that there is a “Din” and a “Cheshbon”. A “Din” is the justice meted out by G-d for

Torah from Israel

22 APRIL 2021

The Decline of Loyalty BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN It is literally impossible to reduce Judaism to one saying or one quick maxim. The study of G-d’s will is too intricate, while mitzvoth are too sweeping to be condensed into one proverb. Yet, Hillel the scholar found a way to summarize all religion within one succinct statement. He was visited by a Gentile who desired an “express conversion”. As the gemara in Shabbat (31) describes, he sought a “drive-thru” conversion lasting no longer than the duration he could stand on one foot (presumably he wasn’t even a yoga master). He had been previously rebuffed by Shammai who dismissed this offensive and ridiculous proposal. Embracing this potential Jew, Hillel condensed all of religion into one famous line: “don’t treat others in a manner in which you, yourself, would not want to be treated”. Effectively reworking the Torah’s dictum of “Love your neighbor like yourself”, Hillel instructed this potential convert that excellence in interpersonal relationships can serve as a portal to overall religious success. This well-known story reminds us that moral life should be very simple. If we treat people with respect and afford them the dignity we sense in ourselves, ethical behavior should feel natural. You can divide the world into two groups: those who respect others and those who disrespect others. Those who respect others generally enjoy deeper relationships and greater emotional well-being. Hillel pivoted the entire Torah upon this rather simple ability to treat others with dignity and worthiness. As comprehensive as this doctrine may be, it only covers half of Judaism. Treating others with respect certainly enables the broader world of relationships and interpersonal duties known as bein adam lachaveiro. What is unclear is how, exactly, this value facilitates the ritual aspects of religion or bein adam la’Makom. How was this convert expected to expand Hillel’s one-sentence program about respecting others into tefillin, Temple ceremony or the dietary laws? Hillel’s convert was searching for one unitary idea which would encompass the entirety of religion. Hillel only provided partial coverage. Rashi (in his comments to the Talmud) already sensed this problem and quoted a source from Mishlei 27 which refers to G-d as a friend. By implication, if G-d isn’t merely a Creator or a Redeemer but also a friend, excellence at friendship should inspire both interpersonal sensitivity but also obedience to Divine will. Excelling at friendship will encourage greater subservience to the desires of our “Heavenly friend”.

In what way is G-d considered our friend and how does this propel religious experience? So many aspects of friendship are uniquely human and have little bearing upon our religious compliance. Viewing G-d as a friend certainly expands our expectations from Him: friends empathize, are generally good listeners, are honest with us, and support us unconditionally during difficult times. It is reassuring to expect these benefits from G-d as a friend. However, how can our friendship with G-d drive our own religious behavior? How does this relationship of friendship with G-d serve as a portal for our own religious expression? At the core of human friendship lies the trait of loyalty. Friends are loyal to one another based on past allegiances and past shared experiences. Interacting with, or even assisting those with whom we share common interest isn’t an expression of loyalty. It is natural and reasonable to share experiences and resources with people whose interests overlap with our own. Loyalty compels dedication to people whose interests are discrepant with our own. We may not share common interests or similar lifestyles, but do share past experiences and a previous relationship. Though we may no longer share interests, loyalty demands commitment to one another and dedication to each other’s needs. Ideally, religious experience should not be based principally upon loyalty, but primarily upon passion, enthusiasm and inspiration. Ideally, our own interest to serve G-d should overlap with His interest in us serving Him. This overlapping of “wills” represents the high point of religion. However, everyone experiences barren moments of spiritual emptiness during which it is difficult to generate an inner religious spark. During those blank moments we serve out of loyalty rather than out of passion. We may not feel inspired to serve G-d, but we can certainly feel loyal to a G-d who has breathed life into us and supported us since we entered this world. Though we feel spiritually hollow, we can feel morally obligated to the G-d of our fathers who has shielded Jews throughout our tumultuous history. In the absence of passion, we can fall back upon friendship and loyalty. Loyalty doesn’t only brace our religious experience, it also enriches us as human beings. Loyal people conduct noble lives of commitment, duty and responsibility. Loyalty helps us live beyond the moment and its immediate conveniences. It bridges us to our past, to the relationships which shaped us, and to the people with whom we have shared the voyage of our life. Loyalty showers our otherwise

Ideally, religious experience should not be based principally upon loyalty, but primarily upon passion, enthusiasm and inspiration. momentary lives with the dignity of purpose, past and of shared journey. Sadly, loyalty is in steep decline in the modern world. Institutions which, in past generations fostered loyalty, are themselves undergoing rapid transformations. Loyalty to the workplace is vanishing in a world in which workers change their jobs, upon average, once every four years. Loyalty to political policies has become extinct in the modern circus of “personality politics”. Democracies which showcase personalities rather than policies, render party loyalty pointless. In the past, adults were loyal to their “backgrounds”- the communities and local institutions of their youth. Our modern world is too portable for these loyalties. We move too quickly and too far away to maintain “local loyalties”. Ideally, marriage and family are each founded upon loyalty, but each of these institutions has become dismembered in a world of reconfigured spousal and family identities. Traditional institutions of loyalty have become modern turnstiles of transience. Modern Man inhabits a world of constantly shifting quicksand. In place of actual loyalties, society offers us counterfeit loyalties- the type of loyalty which doesn’t carry genuine commitment or constant obligation. Some people are

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

loyal to sports teams which they have followed for years. This mock loyalty is purely recreational and doesn’t carry any substantive obligation or responsibility. Consumer loyalty entices customers to repeatedly purchase similar brands. This bogus form of loyalty isn’t moral but transactional- we continue to purchase a brand because we sense greater value or even greater psychological benefit. In a world of vanishing loyalty, society has substituted hoaxes for actual loyalty. We all stand in the shoes of that original convert. We know more about religion than he did, and have performed mitzvot more routinely that he did. However, regarding Hillel’s lesson of loyalty, we are all converts who require education in the values of trust and loyalty. In a world of dwindling faith, loyalty can teach us trust. In a spiritually hollow society loyalty to G-d offers religious durability. In a world of loneliness, loyalty to G-d can germinate into loyalty to people and to past. Loyalty can provide connectedness. Rabbi Moshe Taragin is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

Sidra Summary

“You shall love your fellow as yourself – I am G-d.” (Vayikra 19:18)

an incense offering (ketoret). He will also sprinkle blood from the various offerings in specific areas of the Mishkan.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 16:25-17:7

The Israelites are commanded to fast on Yom Kippur. When Yom Kippur arrives, Aharon does exactly as commanded by G-d. His special service is to be repeated every year by future incumbents of his office. It is forbidden to bring an animal offering anywhere other than the Mishkan.

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – VAYIKRA 16:1-24 G-d speaks to Moshe after the death of two of Aharon’s sons (recorded in parashat Shemini). Moshe is told to warn Aharon, the Kohen Gadol, not to enter the Holy of Holies (Kodesh Hakodashim) area of the Mishkan (Tabernacle), except on Yom Kippur. The sidrah now details the Yom Kippur service in the Mishkan: Aharon will have to bring a bull as a chatat (sin offering) and a ram as an olah (elevation offering). The people will provide two male goats. Aharon must place lots on the two goats, designating one to be a chatat and the other to be thrown off a cliff in the wilderness. Inside the Kodesh Hakodashim, Aharon will bring

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 17:8-18:21

It is forbidden to consume the blood of any animal (Rashi). After doing shechita (slaughter) on kosher fowl or non-domesticated animals, there is a mitzvah to cover the blood. The laws of forbidden relationships are listed, such as with close relatives, or with another’s spouse.

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 18:22-19:14

The nation’s well-being in the Land is dependent upon adhering to the laws about forbidden relationships. [This week’s second sidrah, Kedoshim, contains many mitzvot, a selection of which have been included here]. We are commanded to revere our parents and

to observe Shabbat. Offerings need to be eaten within their designated time. When harvesting one’s field or vineyard, certain produce needs to be left over for paupers to take free of charge. One may not place a stumbling block in front of a blind person.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 19:15-32

A judge is not allowed to favour any litigant. It is forbidden to harbour hatred or to seek revenge. You shall “love your fellow as yourself”. Eating the fruit of a tree during the first three years of growth is forbidden. In its fourth year, the fruit has to be eaten in Jerusalem. It is forbidden to cut one’s skin in mourning. There is a mitzvah to stand up in the presence of a Torah scholar and an elderly person. Point to Consider: what did Rabbi Akiva comment on the mitzvah to “love your fellow as yourself”? (see Rashi to 19:18)

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 19:33-20:7

One must have accurate scales, weights and measures. There was a severe prohibition against giving one’s children over to an ancient cult called ‘Molech’.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 20:8-27

Cursing one’s parents is forbidden. The punishments for the forbidden relationships detailed in the 3rd aliya (Shlishi) are listed. Keeping the laws of kashrut will enable us to remain a distinct and distinguished nation.

HAFTARAH

The prophet Amos rebukes Israel for being no better than the Pelishtim (Philistine) nation. Those who were particularly sinful will suffer the harshest punishment. But once they have died by the sword, the Davidic kingdom will return and the Land will be rebuilt.

Chovat Halevavot Hilchot Shabbat We introduced the seven areas that the author taught us require Bitachon. The first was: Matters concerning one’s wellbeing and sustenance. A person must have Bitachon in relation to their life, their death, their food, clothing, shelter, health, illness and similar. The correct way of “having Bitachon” in respect of all of these is: A person should submit themselves to whatever G-d has chosen for them. A person should be assured that only what G-d has deemed appropriate for the person will reach them whether the positive or (what we perceive as) negative of the list above. G-d knows why one person attains wealth and the other person struggles to pay rent. Why one person can invite thousands to a wedding (in days gone by…) and the other person cannot feed their family. G-d knows not only what is good for the person in this world, but also in the Afterlife and the World to Come. In the same way that G-d chooses a person’s general wellbeing, He also

decides on how much money an individual will make. With the above in mind, a person sets out to earn a living, meaning, knowing full well that the end result is pre-determined anyway. Now, even though matters of one’s life, health and sustenance are in G-d’s hands, this does not mean that a person can neglect these areas with the excuse that, “I trust in G-d”, because this is a form of “testing G-d” which is forbidden in the Torah. One of two things can come from a person acting irresponsibly in these areas: 1) They thereby bring about their own end, which is condemned and forbidden by the Torah under the prohibition of murder. Or 2) They will have a miraculous salvation and thereby have their merits diminished, for one who has a fabulous miracle must worry that they have “spent” their Zechusim, as did our forefather Yaakov, who famously said, “I have become small from all the kindnesses and truth You have done to me”.

The first category of Muktzah we shall be discussing is “Keli She’melachto L’Issur” an item whose primary function is a forbidden one for Shabbat. This is true whether there is a Torah-prohibited activity involved with the item such as a pen, a pair of scissors, cooking utensils, or whether it is a Rabbinic prohibition, such as a (non-expensive) musical instrument. If an item is used for both Shabbat-permissible activities and Shabbat-prohibited activities, it is not a “Keli She’melachto L’Issur” (although there are limits as to what can freely move on Shabbat in general). It is permitted to move items in this category so long as it is done either: For a permissible use such as using a pen to stir one’s tea, or to clear space where the item is but does not belong. For example if a hammer is on one’s dining room table and one needs to spread a cloth on the table. If however, one is merely embarrassed by the presence of the hammer it

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

will be forbidden to move it on Shabbat. If moving the hammer in the permissible circumstance, one need not drop it, but they can place it wheresoever they wish so long as it has not left their hand yet. It is forbidden to move a “Keli She’melachto L’Issur” even if one wishes to protect it from being damaged or stolen. However, If one is worried about it being stolen and they have a genuine use for It, they can move it and put it to that genuine permissible use. Any item which is clearly for non-permissible use such as a pen, has the law of “Keli She’melachto L’Issur”, whether or not one has personally used it in the past. On the other hand, a permissible item such as soup bowl may be moved even if one had in mind to use it as a lamp (i.e. fill it with oil and light a wick in it), so long as one has not actually put it to that use.

Weekly Dvar Torah FR O M ER ETZ Y I S RA E L

Dealing with our Desires BY RABBI BINNY FREEDMAN So often in life, we struggle with desires and needs that seem to weigh us down. If only we didn’t so crave that chocolate fudge cake, wouldn’t it be easier to diet? How often do you know you have better things to do with your time, and suddenly, two hours later, you put your phone down wondering why you wasted a perfectly good evening with nothing to show for it? Wouldn’t it be great if we could somehow remove those desires we know to be so wasteful? The first of this week’s double-portion, Acharei Mot, actually begins with a treatment of this topic that most people miss. G-d tells Moshe to instruct Aaron “after the death of his sons”, regarding the service in the Mishkan. One would have expected a topic which directly relates to the trauma Aaron experienced in the loss of his sons. Strangely, however, the Torah here begins a discussion of the two goat offerings,

which form the central part of the service on Yom Kippur. Aaron, as the Kohen Gadol, is told to take two he-goats as a sin, or Chatat, offering. The Kohen Gadol picks lots for these two goats. On one of the notes was written “For G-d” and this goat was offered as the central sacrifice of Yom Kippur. On the second was written “For Azazel”. The verse (16:10) suggests that this goat was taken into the wilderness, and ultimately cast off the desert cliffs. Why in order to attain forgiveness for the Jewish people must this second goat be taken off into the desert? Why not offer it up in the Temple, like all other sacrifices? The Ramban suggests that Azazel is really Samael, “The Prince who rules in the places of darkness and destruction”. On Yom Kippur, when we as a people find favor in G-d’s eyes, we need to appease this dark Prince; hence we offer him a special sacrifice, in the darkness of the wilderness, in the places of destruction!

Can the Ramban be suggesting that we are offering sacrifices to the ‘dark side’? Is this Judaism? It actually smacks more of ancient Canaanite paganism! Rabbi Shlomo Riskin shared a beautiful way of looking at this Ramban, based on the teachings of Rav Soloveitchik zt”l. The Talmud (Yoma 86b) states: “Great is the power of repentance, which causes pre-meditated transgressions to become merits.” A rather challenging statement, which implies that if I purposefully transgress, and subsequently repent and regret my actions, not only is my slate wiped clean and my past mistakes forgiven, but in fact these transgressions now serve as a merit to me in all of my future activities! Perhaps what the Talmud is saying is, if I have desires that serve to pull me down, I can turn those desires into a merit, if I learn to channel them into better things. Everything we are given in this world, is ours for a reason. We all have our talents and skills, desires and foibles; all the things that bring us up, and all the things

that bring us down. There isn’t much we can do about that. The question, however, is what we choose to do with it. This, perhaps, is the offering to Samael described by the Ramban. There is a place of darkness inside each one of us, that threatens to destroy us, to bring us down from the places of light we so long to reach. Judaism’s approach is: don’t deny these desires, embrace them, channel their energy to a good purpose. This is the secret of Yom Kippur, when we attempt to channel all the love and joy as well as the pain and anguish deep in our hearts, to a higher purpose. Perhaps this is why this message is given here, to Aaron so soon after the death of his sons. Confronted by the incontrovertible reality of our own mortality, we easily succumb to the idea that there is no purpose, no meaning, only an all too often untimely ending. But if G-d truly loves us, and only gives us opportunities to grow, then perhaps, however painful, death too is such an opportunity. Rabbi Binny Freedman is Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Orayta. A Torah bite for the Shabbat table

Authentic Holiness RABBI GOODMAN “Holy” is one of those words that conjure up a plethora of wild and wacky images, ranging from a Yogi in loincloth meditating in the Himalayas to Chassidic Rebbes with long flowing beards, rolling their eyes back as they ecstatically dance with the archangels. And even if you are not fortunate enough to possess an imagination as rich as Bill Gates, the accolade “Holy” certainly does not evoke impressions of ordinary, everyday people. However, Holiness is not a trait reserved for the elite. At the beginning of the second of this week’s Parshios, Parshas Kedoshim, Hashem instructs Moshe Rabbeinu to tell Bnei Yisroel, “You shall be holy, for holy am I, Hashem, your G-d.” Hashem did not order Moshe Rabbeinu to tell the seventy elders, nor the tribal leaders, to be holy, rather He told Moshe to inform every single member of Klal Yisroel, regardless of his social stature, beard length or ancestry, to be holy. To be “Holy” means to be separate. Indeed, we are an “Am Kadosh” - a Holy

Nation, because Hashem separated us from the other nations by giving us the Torah. However, the Ramban, Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman (1194-1270), says that the holiness referred to in this Pasuk means something more. He explains that Hashem’s command to be Holy means to “sanctify yourself with that which you are allowed.” To explain the words of the Ramban, the Ksav Sofer writes that there are two types of holiness- one generated from without and one generated from within. A person who segregates himself from others by means of his actions achieves holiness by virtue of his social distance. His holiness is generated from without- because he abstains from what other people do, therefore, he is holy. The only reason why refraining from non-kosher food sanctifies us as a nation is specifically because the other nations eat it.

However, there is a second, more authentic, type of holiness which is generated from within a person. When a person exerts self-control and resists the urge to overindulge in that which is permitted, he generates a degree of Divine holiness. This type of separation does not depend upon external factors- on other people behaving differently, rather it depends upon one’s own resolve to limit his materialistic absorption to concentrate on his spiritual absorption. It is about this type of holiness that Hashem says, “You shall be holy, for holy am I, Hashem, your G-d.” There is no place in Judaism for a “holier than thou” attitude of moral superiority. True holiness has nothing to do with other people and cannot be measured objectively. Your level of holiness hinges upon how you handle your personal challenges- how capable you are of maintaining self-control in the unrestricted areas

Acharei Mot-Kedoshim

Acharei Mot-Kedoshim Word Search

This week we have two uplifting Parshiyot! Achrei Mot describes the service of the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year. This was an awesome experience and many of the Jewish people would gather in the Beit Hamikdash to watch the Kohen Gadol perform what is called the “Avoda”. The sacrifices, the Ketoret and the goats, along with the Kohen Gadol wearing white clothes for parts of the day, and his gold clothes for parts of the day. All in all it was an incredibly spiritually exciting day and we long for its return each year on Yom Kippur, when we fast and do not do any work and remember it is a holy day of purifying ourselves from all our sins! We then enter Parshat Kedoshim where we learn of dozens of Mitzvot; some memorable ones are: being in awe of our parents, guarding the Shabbat day, not wearing Shaatnez and the Mitzvah of leaving the corner of our field to the poor. In general, we are commanded to be honest, kind, and caring at all times and to remember that G-d took us out of Egypt, separating us from all other nations and He commanded us to be Holy! There are many more Mitzvot in the Parsha and learning all about them is one good way to spend a long Shabbat afternoon…

Acharei Mot- Kedoshim

In a nutshell This week we are once again presented with a double parsha. The first, Achrei Mot, opens with the details of the service of the Kohen Godol on Yom Kippur. It describes the two goats, the bulls and the Ketoret. One of the goats was sent to a desert where it met its end. The Kohen Godol changed his clothes and immersed himself up to five times on the day and the entire service was quite dramatic. Today we can only recite the prayers on Yom Kippur but from reading about it we get a glimpse of the awesome atmosphere that permeated the Beit Hamikdash on that day. Along with the service came the well-known Mitzvah to fast on Yom Kippur and to refrain from other activities such as not wearing leather shoes or doing work.We then learn of the laws of bringing a Korban only to the Beit Hamikdash and not slaughtering it anywhere else. We are also taught of the prohibition of eating blood

and the special Mitzvah of “Kisui ha’Dam” covering the blood of certain animals when slaughtering them.Achrei Mot ends with the laws on forbidden relationships. All of these Mitzvot also serve remind us that we are a special nation and that Eretz Yisrael is given to us because we are holy and don’t act like the ancient nations who acted in an abonimable manner. This leads us straight into Parshat Kedoshim, the opening Mitzvah of which is to “Be Holy” - be refined, elevated, not pursuing each pleasure as if that will grant everlasting happiness. Kedoshim is chock full of Mitzvot. Here are some: Being in awe of one’s parents such as not contradicting them and not sitting in their seat, paying workers on time, not gossiping, not taking revenge, not wearing Shatnez. Similar to Shatnez one may not mix seeds when

planting in a field or mix two animals for the purpose of ploughing one’s field. Also, one waits three years before eating the fruit of a tree and leaves the corner of one’s field for the poor. There is the special Mitzvah of Peyot which is very important to be aware of when having a haircut. Not shaving with a razor or questionable shavers. There is also the prohibition of owning and using crooked weight measures. If one sells in weight, one must not use faulty weighing scales as the buyer could lose out. Kedoshim ends with similar Mitzvot to Acharei Mot and with reminder that the Jews are to be aware of the difference between kosher and non kosher animals and likewise to be aware of the special status of the nation.G-d is Holy and so should we strive to be!

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti, “We have seven games and we have to keep fighting every game. Vale win 9-goal bonanza against Borussia BY DAVID SAFFER Hertswood Vale have moved into Division One promotion contention after a thrilling 5-4 win at league leaders Borussia Barnet. With both sides knowing this was a chance to push for promotion it was always going to be an entertaining match. And sharpshooter Harry Graham bagged a hat-trick for the victors, James Millet and Scott Hircombe also scored. Vale keeper Adam Zaidman pulled off an early save prior to Graham hitting the opening goal after 15 minutes with a firsttime finish from a tight angle after a flick on from Charlie Becker. Graham fired home left footed for number two, Hircombe then poached a goal before Barnet pulled a goal back. But Vale struck just before half-time through skipper Millet. Barnet pulled a couple of goals back before Graham completed his treble. Barnet then made it a tense finish but Vale held on to move within three points of top spot in an ultra competitive league. Vale’s delighted boss Jacob Emmanuel noted, “That has to be up there with one of the contenders for ‘game of the season’, it was a brilliant game for the neutrals. I couldn’t be prouder of the boys. Every single player was superb. We were the better team on the day and deserved the points in what is undoubtedly one of the bigger league results in our history.” In other Division One clashes, Paris Saint Jewmain caused a shock by picking up a point at high flying London Bears in a 2-2 draw. Josh Summerfield and Mikey Elia struck for the visitors. Elio Elia noted, “We rode our luck at times and relied on some wonder saves from our goalkeeper Gabriel Spalter. Based on our record in the first half of the season, this would have been a game where we normally imploded. But we were resolute in our defending and took our chances. And we almost nicked it with the final kick of the game but overall it was a fair result.” Club de Chigwell are also in the promotion mix after a 6-4 win at Faithfold Green. Chigwell struck first in the 10-goal thriller with a superb goal from skipper Stanley Offord only for Faithfold to strike from a penalty and corner. Faithfold went down to 10 men before half time and keeper Barnaby Powell saved a penalty only for Jamie Rones to nod home a few minutes into the second half. Offord got his second goal with a header from a Jacob Bennett pass but Faithfold levelled again at 3-3. Bennett set up Sam Baker to loop a header home prior to Bennett securing a win with a brace. The attitude and determination from the boys to come from behind and keep going once pegged back was pleasing to see.” Motty Herzog, Jack Brand (2) and Ben Krieger scored for Faithfold. Faithfold’s Ben Kfir noted, “We started the game really well and even having gone down to 10 men we looked solid. We kept fighting, with less injuries would have been a better game.”

Mill Hill Dons moved into fourth place with a 4-0 and 5-1 in against Temple Fortune in a double header. Jonny May (2), Joshua Cinna and Elliot Freer struck in the opening game. Zach Cohen (2), May, Freer and Sam Stead hit the target in the reverse fixture. Brandon Hamme commented, “We are delighted to get six more points on the board, it’s a real sign of improvement. The atmosphere around the club is great and we look to continue to keep that way for the remainder of the season.” FC Team and Brook Farm Rovers picked up a win apiece in another double header fixture. FC overcame Rovers 2-0 in the opening encounter before a Joe Gourgey wonder strike settled the return. Rovers boss Dan Cohen noted, “Hopefully we can use that as a springboard for the rest of the season. much-needed win in the second game. Meantime, Premier Division pacesetters Maccabi London FC overcame Oakwood 2-0 in a tough encounter. Charlie Dryer and Max Kyte struck the all-important goals that keeps Maccabi’s 100% record intact. Maccabi are three points clear of second place HMH. The sides meet in a much anticipated top of the table clash on Sunday. “All of our boys were really switched on and worked their socks off for 90 minutes,” said Kyte. Oscar Wagner struck four goals as HMH defeated Fairlop 5-2. Alex Moss also hit the target. HMH boss Avi Goldberg described the match as a “clinical second half performance”. North London Raiders enjoyed a disciplined 4-1 triumph at North London Galaxy in the other Premier clash. Jordan Nathan (2), Charlie Cohen, Maxim Green scored for Raiders who move into a share of third place with the victory. Raiders boss Gideon Gale said, “Quality prevailed on the day and delighted to come away with three points.” Jewdinese thumped bottom club Faithfold White 6-2 for a second league win. Reiss Mogilner (2), James Ross, Zac Brin, Zack Collins and an own goal accounted for the victory. ‘Nese manager Darren Lawrence said, “Other than a brief spell we dominated the game and scored some really good goals. Hoping we can use this as a platform to build on and have a really strong finish this season.” Elsewhere, Stoke Salmon moved alongside NWL Azurri with a 10-0 rout against 10-man Scrabble in Division Two. Nick Barnett, Harry Goldsmith (2), David Flax, Alex Bleetman, Ben Ingram (2), Jamie Smaje (2) and James Gordon scored the goals for the joint league leaders in their biggest win of the season. “A great day at the office for Stoke,” noted Salmon’s Jamie Wiener. “An early red card for the opposition made it easier, however, some great football was displayed with some cracking finishes.” SPEC overcame Hampstead Ducks 4-2 courtesy of Dan Cohen, Jeff Gotch, Sam Roth and Raf Neiman hitting the target for the hosts. Sam Shooter scored a brace for Hampstead. Spec’s Ricky Lawrence, “Not one for the purists today as it was a game dominated by set pieces which included four headed goals. But it was a pleasing win and one against a good side.” FC East London Bees came from behind to defeat Redbridge Jewish Care 4-2 in the final league fixture.
