Bennett loses Knesset majority after shock resignation BY DAVID SAFFER

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s government has suffered a major blow after Yamina’s Idit Silman announced yesterday she is quitting the rainbow coalition over concerns about Israel’s “Jewish identity”. Bennett’s wafer-thin Knesset majority has gone. The coalition and opposition led by former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hold 60 Knesset seats apiece. The Knesset is in recess so a coalition collapse is unlikely but Silman’s move has sent shockwaves through political parties. Silman must join with two coalition members in a new faction and believes a right wing government can be formed without elections. The fallout could see Netanyahu return as Prime Minister though a comeback is not automatic due to Israel’s political system. Netanyahu, who has led Israel longer than any other PM, congratulated Silman in a video on behalf of “millions of Israelis who have been longing for this moment”. He reportedly noted, “You have proved that you are guided by concern for Israel’s Jewish identity, you will be welcomed back with

Idit Silman

open arms.” When news broke about Silman it stunned Bennett who cancelled meetings for urgent talks with senior coalition members including Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked to ensure they remain in his coalition. Silman in a resignation letter to Bennett reportedly wrote that she joined the coalition to produce

“unity” in Israel as a people and State. Her core values though were “inconsistent with the current reality”. “It’s time to recalibrate our route to try and establish a national, Jewish, Zionist government,” she noted. Silman cited “deep ideological differences” with left-wing parties following a quarrel with Meretz leader and Health Minister

Horowitz over chametz food being allowed in hospitals during Passover. Calling for a right-wing coalition, Silman said she would not “lend a hand” to damage the “Jewish character” of Israel. Religious Zionism party leader Bezalel Smotrich described the news as a “new dawn” for Israel. Amongst media speculation there are reports Silman will take up the Health Minister post with Likud. The present coalition includes two left-wing, two centrist, three right-wing parties and an Islamic Party and has survived 10 months. But without a majority, the coalition will struggle to pass legislation or the next budget though the latter is not as pressing an issue for 11 months. Bicom noted that a decision to co-opt support of the Joint List could see right-wing coalition members join Silman. The government can only be replaced without a general election if it has a majority of 61 and an agreed candidate for Prime Minister. Netanyahu has previously targeted coalition right-wing members from Yamina, New Hope and the Blue and White Party. Israel on “high alert” over terror attacks BY DAVID SAFFER

Israel security services are prepared for a surge in violence in the coming weeks. Terror attacks last month saw 11 Israelis murdered and dozens injured following incidents in Be’er Sheva, Hadera and Bnai Brak. The IDF has responded by tracking down terrorist cells but with Pesach days away alongside Ramadan, Easter and Ziyarat al-Nabi Shu’ayb followed by Yom Hashoah, Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut and Palestinian Nakba, tensions are expected to rise on Israel’s borders, Israeli-Arab towns and historic sites. Police presence will be high with a cautionary stance. “Even the smallest spark could ignite multi-front incidents across Israel,” said Sigal Bar-Tzvi, head of Israel Police’s Operations Department. “The police is on very high alert. We’re trying to create maximal presence throughout the country, especially in potential flashpoints to answer for any scenario. Our policy as law enforcement is to create as little friction as possible during protests.” Next month marks the anniversary of 11 days of conflict between Israel and Gaza Strip terrorists. ‘Operation Guardian of the Walls’ saw 4,400 rockets fired at Israeli cities from the Gaza Strip. A ceasefire brokered by Egypt and Qatar followed fighting that saw over 240 Palestinians killed and 1,600 injured, 13 people died in Israel with 350 people injured. Bar-Tzvi accepted further hostilities were possible, the police were stretched but prepared. “The police mapped out all the potential points of friction across the country toward the one-year anniversary,” she noted. “We’re still severely short on manpower. We’ll be able to respond to most occurrences but not all.” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett visited IDF Judea and Samaria Division headquarters with Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi and senior officers this week following violence at Damascus Gate at the onset of Ramadan at the weekend. Bennett has seen wounded officers at Rambam Hospital. “The last two weeks, in which we have been dealing with severe terrorist attacks, are a wake-up call for all of us,” he said. “We are determined not to allow this wave of terrorism.” Bennett added, “We are currently taking very aggressive action. Up until now, the IDF, ISA and the Israel Police have thwarted over 15 significant terrorist attacks that were planned by terrorists in Judea and Samaria and in the rest of the country.” He continued, “Security forces have arrested 207 suspects and raided dozens of homes. Additionally, we located and reached over 400 suspects or people who have had some connection with ISIS or

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett at IDF HQ

extremist Jihad organisations. These initiated operations are succeeding in thwarting many terrorist initiatives.” East Jerusalem Operations Chief Superintendent Amir Ben Kiki responded to the Damascus Gate violence. “We attempt to arrest only those who are responsible for inciting,” he said. “However, in some situations, things go out of control and we have no choice but to use measures. We try to keep the holiday routine, but extremists chose to break the public order.” Ben Kiki added, “We will act harshly against those who try to break the public order and cause riots, but the Arab population itself must tell those who are responsible for the riots that they don’t want this, and that they only wish to celebrate the Ramadan holiday. There are tens of thousands of normative people and only because a handful of inciters riots break.” Bennett called on Israelis to return to work, travel around the country and “feel safe” in the aftermath of the violence. “In the face of waves of terrorism, we must unite be together and win,” he noted, adding, “Terrorist organisations want to disrupt our way of life, I call on the entire Israeli public to go to work, for a walk, to hang out.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz also called on the public to continue a normal routine. “It’s part of the Israeli resilience, part of the public resilience, part of our might,” he said. “We must continue with life’s routine. We’re increasing security presence as can be seen. If an event happens, listen to the instructions of the security forces.” Gantz wished Palestinians a happy Ramadan but warned against violence. He said, “We’ve been advancing, in collaboration with the Palestinian Authority, a

series of moves that are meant to improve the quality of life and economy in the West Bank and Gaza. Terror poses a threat to our ability to advance these moves and we can go back to working on them only if the silence and security stability returns. We want this, I’m sure that most of the Palestinians are also interested in these moves.” The government, meantime, has approved NIS 180 million in emergency assistance to recruit officers and equipment. Bennett has also approved the formation of a new “Border Police Unit”. Bennett noted past governments allowed 250,000 illegal weapons to be accumulated in the Arab sector. Negev and Border Police carried out an operation in the Bedouin community of Lakiya where they seized hundreds of weapons. Border Police Superintendent Shahaf Aharon said the discovery was “one of the most significant seizures in the area”. “All systems are now dedicated to restoring personal security to the citizens of Israel,” Bennett said. “The terrorists’ goal is not just to murder and kill but to sow fear in the

hearts of Israeli citizens in order to disrupt the routine. We cannot let them succeed.” IDF troops killed three Palestinian terrorists in the West Bank last weekend. Shin Bet said the militants had been under surveillance and were “ticking time bombs” responsible for a terror attack in the West Bank and planned more attacks. Four Israelis were wounded, one seriously in Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa. IDF Spokesperson Lt. Gen. Ran Kochav praised security forces. “This must be a message to our enemies,” he said. Kochav noted the gunman who carried out the Bnai Brak deadly attack used an opening for farmers. “Our mission is to differentiate between infiltrating terrorists and working civilians,” he explained. Bennett met with Shin Bet and security officials. “Terror and violence have always united us and made us more resolute to hold on to our land and protect it,” he said. “We will overcome this difficult time.” Gantz said Sunday that Israel was observing Gaza and preparing for attacks. He noted, “We’re assuming there could be an escalation but the residents in Gaza, including Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, need to choose what kind of Ramadan they want. They (Hamas) want terror activity in the West Bank. If there will be action against Israel from the Strip, Gaza will feel the kind of pain that I suggest it spares from itself. They’re familiar with our abilities, with all our resources, if they release the gunlock, we’ll come crashing down on them.” Bennett called on Israelis to carry a gun if they had a license last week. Bar-Zvi advised holders to act in accordance with the law and follow procedures of opening fire. “The police is acting in collaboration with all security bodies,” Bar-Zvi explained. “There is security surrounding markets, malls, hitchhiking stops, train stations, schools, recreational areas and other crowded spaces. Along with walking the beat, the police is monitoring the internet to gather intelligence on individuals calling for riots or planning terrorist activity.” WHAT’S INSIDE THIS WEEK 04 News 22 Games 24 Community 26 Cookery

Israel, UAE and US in coexistence group BY LILLY JOSEPH

Israel, the United Arab Emirates and United States have launched a Trilateral Religious Coexistence Working Group in Dubai. An ambitious agenda promotes interfaith and intercultural dialogue, counters religious intolerance and hatred. The group is a direct outcome of the historic Abraham Accords. Emirati Minister of Health Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Israeli Minister of Intelligence Elazar Stern and US Under Secretary of State Uzra Zeya participated. Working with governments, organisations, philanthropists and leaders the working group supports initiatives including education, youth programming and religious coexistence. Some activities will

be launched this year. The group is looking to end long-held mistrust. “The Abraham Accords have become the most important force for positive change in the Middle East,” said Owais. “We must find new ways to encourage people-to-people engagement that bridges religions, cultures, and nationalities.” Stern noted, “The murderous terror attack in Hadera is another example of the importance of pressing forward. Tolerance and coexistence are the paths to our shared humanity and peace.” He added that the Abraham Accords had shattered long-standing paradigms. Stern continued, “It is our duty to build on them and widen the circle of peace, regionally and globally, through these meetings of the Abrahamic faiths to send a clear

message of reconciliation, acceptance and inclusion.” Zeya said that the Accords represented one of the most significant strategic shifts over three decades of diplomacy in the region. In related news, Minister of Transport and Road Safety Merav Michaeli participated in a series of meetings in Dubai last Sunday. Michaeli met senior administration leading figures in transportation, aviation and logistics. During her visit, she was set to sign a shipping agreement with UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei. Michaeli would also visit the Jebel Ali Port to see the commercial potential. The

The visit concludes with a visit to the Women and Mobility pavilions at EXPO Dubai. This is Michaeli’s first official overseas visit to strengthen relations between Israel and USA, to promote agreements and memoranda in transport, aviation and haulage, and develop working relationships between the Israeli and Emirati governments. and in hotels we are housing them in.” He added, “These refugees have lost their home and are in foreign countries seeking safety and security. We are doing all we can to help them. Our ‘Angels’ are providing them with practical advice and further easing the burdens of hundreds of families by bringing some joy into the refugee children’s lives.” Following the exposure of the Bucha massacre Rabbi Schudrich said that the CER together with all people across the earth were “horrified and grieving”. He added, “This destruction, devastation and loss of life is deplorable.”

More damning evidence against new NUS chair BY LILLY JOSEPH

Campaign Against Antisemitism have revealed new antisemitic tweets from newly-elected National Union of Students President Shaima Dallali. CAA recently blasted the appointment of the incoming NUS president who apologised for reportedly tweeting an Islamist chant threatening Jews a decade ago. The Arabic battle cry references the massacre and expulsion of Jews of Khaybar in north western Arabia, now Saudi Arabia. “I was wrong to see the Palestine conflict

as one between Muslims and Jews. The reference made as a teenager was unacceptable and I sincerely and unreservedly apologise,” Dallali said in a statement. But CAA has discovered historic tweets from Dallali including the antisemitic “From the river to the sea” chant. She also reportedly referred to a preacher who condemned actions taken by Hamas as a “dirty Zionist” and raised money for controversial activist group CAGE. “Dallali’s election as NUS President, in spite of her social media record, only a week after the Lowkey scandal is just the

latest indication that this union does not even aspire to represent Jewish students,” commented Binyomin Gilbert, CAA Programme Manager. “She has not even taken office and has already had to apologise for one historic antisemitic tweet while rapidly deleting many other inflammatory social media posts, while yet more are being uncovered. If she wishes to show that she personally has learned a lesson and seeks to lead a truly inclusive union, she should commit to meeting with Jewish students and educate herself on their concerns and also announce that NUS

under her leadership will recommit to the International Definition of Antisemitism. If she cannot bring herself to do that in short order, the Government should end its enormous grant to NUS.” Dallali’s appointment comes after Jewish organisations slated rapper Kareem Dennis, known as Lowkey, being booked as a keynote speaker at the NUS’ centenary conference this month. The activist was “pulled out of the event” according to the NUS. CAA and the Board of Deputies condemned the NUS-Lowkey decision. When Jewish students questioned the union’s conference, NUS reportedly advised them they could use an “existing safe space” for students “sensitive to loud noise” during the performance. CAA revealed Lowkey had described Israel as a “racist endeavour” and Zionism as “antisemitic”. He has also spoken of the “Zionist lobby” and backed Corbyn. Responding to a Union of Jewish Students’ tweet regarding Lowkey, Dallali wrote that her hands were “outstretched” to all students and would arrange a meeting in office. This note came after she had criticised UJS of having a “history of bullying pro-Palestine sabbs (sabbatical officers) and activists”. In the same tweet, Dallali added, “You speak one word of solidarity and they’re after you. UJS and their likes need to be called out.” Dallali is City, the University of London students’ union President. Last year, during her term at the helm, the union organised a controversial referendum on the IHRA definition after reportedly failing to consult Jewish students. Dallali also tweeted messages regarding UJS and support for former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Economy and Industry Minister Maj.-Gen. Orna Barbivay and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi have agreed a historic bilateral free trade agreement. This is the first full free trade agreement for Israel with an Arab country. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed vowed to agree a deal in Abu Dhabi and Egypt. Foreign Trade Director Ohad Cohen led the Israeli negotiating team with the Foreign, Industry, Agriculture and Justice Ministries, Prime Minister’s Office and Tax Authority Customs Department. The agreement includes issues regarding trade including regulations, customs, trade in services, cooperation, government procurement, electronic trade and trademarks. Up to 95% of goods traded between the two countries are included in the deal and will be exempt from customs immediately or gradually. Bennett noted, “This is an important moment in relations between the State of Israel and the UAE. There will be more trade, more jobs and good products at lower prices.” “We have succeeded, within a short time, in concluding wide-ranging and comprehensive negotiations with a country with which we had no economic relations until 18 months ago,” said Cohen. “The desire by both sides to conclude the negotiations quickly and efficiently, while maintaining the interests of both countries, proves that this is a long-term partnership that will continue to develop and expand into different areas.” Foreign Minister Yair Lapid welcomed the agreement in the spirit of the Negev Summit. Since the establishment of the Abraham Accords, the Economy and Industry Ministry has been working to expand economic relations between Israel and the UAE. Barbivay noted, “The conclusion of the negotiations is a significant and historic milestone in bilateral relations. We will continue to assist the Israeli business community to establish commercial ties in the UAE via the free trade agreement.”

standards are maintained. It will work in cooperation with Chief Rabbi Schudrich to maintain independence required by a Beth Din. The agreement brings about a close collaboration between Beth Din Dayanim and the Polish Chief Rabbi. Dayanim will visit Poland three times a year and travel there at other times when required. Beth Din director Dayan Vanzetta will remotely oversee the daily running of the agreement.

NEWS 9 Chief Rabbi Schudrich is CER’s official spokesperson regarding the Russia-Ukraine crisis and has been heavily involved with Ukrainian refugees fleeing to Poland. CER has provided funds to support refugees and local European communities offering food, shelter, clothing and transportation. CER have recruited teams of rabbis, Russian-speaking translators and psychologists to offer support to those displaced. The European Beth Din was established as an initiative of the late Chief Rabbi Lord Immanuel Jakobovits who served as President of the Conference of European Rabbis. It was set up as a response to repeated requests from European communities where there were no functioning Rabbinical Courts.

Israelis aid Ukrainian refugees says Shaked

Eve Kugler addresses the conference BY DAVID SAFFER

Israel is the only country in the world where people fleeing Ukraine get “citizenship, social security and housing” in the first week of arrival Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked told delegates at The Jerusalem Post London Conference on antisemitism last Thursday. Israel expects up to 50,000 refugees to arrive in Israel. Over 10,000 have made the long, dangerous journey following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Israel is the home of the Jewish people, the only Jewish state,” Shaked said. “Our first responsibility is to them.” Antisemitism, the war in Ukraine, Iranian threat to Israel, the Holocaust, Israeli economy and sport were among many topics discussed by a plethora of guest speakers during the one-day event in north London. Shaked was “not optimistic” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett could successfully mediate peace between Russia and Ukaine but Israel would do everything “to help solve this conflict” she said. “Israel as a Jewish state should leave no stone unturned,” Shaked added. Israel’s minister was guarded when asked if she would run with Bennett at the next general election. “We share the same values, I believe in (the) future we’ll cooperate,” she said

Ayelet Shaked speaking at the conference

diplomatically. Regarding the wave of recent terrorist attacks in Israel, Shaked said that “lone wolves” were responsible not a specific terrorist organisation. Antisemitism was the central topic. The most emotive moment of proceedings was when Holocaust survivor Eve Kugler and Carolin Hohnecker, a third-generation granddaughter of Nazi SS officers, spoke on a panel. After Eve thanked Carolin for sharing her story, the German March of Life member said because of her family background she had to “take the responsibility to find the words her forefathers never found,”. Speaking about her experiences, Eve noted, “When you don’t confront evil, evil finds a way of pushing the boundaries beyond anything anyone thought possible. It didn’t start with six million dead. It started with words. But it rose to more than six million very quickly from there.” Eitan Neishlos, a third-generation Holocaust survivor from Australia and Nobuki Sugihara, son of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who issued thousands of visas to Lithuanian Jews, also spoke. Neishlos, president of the Neishlos Foundation, told Eve, “We stand before you on behalf of the next generation, the third generation. We will light this candle, we will take this flame of remembrance and

we will pass it down from generation to generation.” UK March of the Living Founder Scott Saunders spoke about the march which takes place in a few weeks. Yaakov Hagoel, World Zionist Organisation and The Jewish Agency, discussed the thousands of Jews that had been rescued from Ukraine. “We are bringing anyone who chooses to come to Israel to this country,” he said. Ronald S. Lauder in a pre-recorded broadcast on antisemitism noted, “From now on, let’s all call it what it really is, the hatred-of-Jews or Jew-Hatred.” Lauder praised countries close to Ukraine that had provided homes, shelters and jobs for refugees. Regarding Iran he noted, “Israel must make it very clear that it will never accept a nuclear Iran.” Lauder also called for every Jewish child that wants a Jewish education to get one. “Money should never be a factor,” he implored. Katharine von Schnurbein, European Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism & Fostering Jewish Life, Felix Klein, German Government Commissioner for Antisemitism, Racheli Baratz, World Zionist Organisation and Lord John Mann, British government advisor on antisemitism participated on the antisemitism

panel. Social media and antisemtic tropes brought a unified response regarding the impact on antisemitism. “Holocaust distortion is a crime in Germany,” noted Klein. “The comparisons of COVID-19 vaccine mandates to the Holocaust are a terrible trivialisation.” Germany is experiencing a post-war high rate of antisemitic crimes, many online, Klein added. Von Schnurbein welcomed the European Commission acting on antisemitism. “We want Jews to see their future in Europe and feel secure,” she said. It was important, she added, that the education system issues are addressed and antisemitism cases were prosecuted. Mann announced he was leading a task force of MPs examining Jewish life on campus. Other speakers included Lord David Wolfson, UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice, US Deputy Special Envoy Aaron Keyak, Bank of Israel Governor Prof. Amir Yaron, Arab-Israeli activist Yoseph Haddad, Daniel Kessler, UK-Israel Business, Yael Arad, Israel Olympic Committee President and Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman of Yeshiva University. UK Ambassador to Israel Neil Wigan and Israeli Deputy Ambassador to the UK Oren Marmorstein were also on the programme.

BoD & JLC unite on UK-Israel trade deal The Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council have pointed to areas where trade between Israel and the UK is flourishing. They have also made recommendations for enhancing the economic-relationship in a joint submission to the Department for International Trade’s consultation on the Free Trade Agreement with Israel. In the document, the two point to a thriving trade relationship between the UK and Israel in the high tech industries including medical devices, electronics, computer software and hardware, telecommunications,

and collaboration in academic and scientific research. Board of Deputies Senior-Vice President David Mendoza-Wolfson said, “This consultation is an important opportunity to trumpet the benefits of a free trade agreement for both countries in a number of fields. We also stress that at a time when those who hate Israel continue to rally against cooperation, UK-Israel trade and relations, in general, are flourishing like never before. Even closer links will promote prosperity, goodwill and will have tangible benefits for both the UK-Jewish

community and wider UK society who have much to gain from this FTA” JLC Chair Keith Black commented, “Negotiations are just the latest step in our deepening bilateral relations. A new deal not only promises to bring economic benefits to our two countries but it also shows that despite the best efforts of those who serve to delegitimise the Jewish state, British businesses are eager to expand their relations with Israel.” He added, “During these uncertain geopolitical times it is more critical than ever that the ties that bind democratic liberal countries

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

are cemented into relationships of enduring value and joint commitment to each other’s peace and prosperity.” The submission addresses opportunities in the post-Brexit world to further strengthen trade and strategic links between the UK and Israel and stresses the importance of trade in combatting antisemitism and the BDS movement. This will not strengthen the diplomatic relationship between the governments and address antisemitism in the UK relating to Israel.

Zelensky accuses Russia of war crimes BY ADAM MOSES

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russian troops of war crimes in a hard-hitting address to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday. Zelensky did not hold back on alleged atrocities after horrifying images of Bucha surfaced over the weekend. Ukriane’s leader questioned the purpose of the security council in a damning address. There is “not a single crime” the Russians “would not commit” he said. “They killed entire families, adults and children,” Zelensky added. “I am addressing you on behalf of the people who honour the memory of the deceased every single day and in the memory of the civilians who died.” Zelensky warned what occurred in Bucha would happen cities across Ukraine. Zelensky called for Russians given “criminal orders” to be brought before a tribunal like Nuremberg after World War Two when the Nazis faced a trial. He later told reporters at a press briefing his country will become a “big Israel” when its military has driven Russian forces out of his country. areas. Ukraine’s deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk has appealed to residents of Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk to evacuate the area. “It has to be done now because later the people will be under fire and face the threat of death,” she said. There are fears Putin’s Russian forces could move to a large-scale offensive in the east of Ukraine. The US and EU are will announce further

measures against Russia. Amidst the shocking daily stories emerging from the war-torn country news came of a Jewish wedding in Ukraine on Monday night. The wedding of Alexander Tolkach and Tatiana Gvinyashvili in Dnipro was reportedly attended by 25 guests and is believed to be the first wedding in the country since the war began. Chief Rabbi of Dnipro HaRav Shmuel

It must have seemed an eternity to the esteemed Rav that when the threat of war loomed in the fourth-largest city of some one million residents hundreds of Jews participated in a Hachnasas Sefer Torah at the Dnipro centre less than two months ago. HaRav Kaminetzky, HaRav Levi Englesman and other Rabbanim led the event that brought the Torah to the shul at the new Beis Chabad in the Pola neighbourhood near the city centre. Around 10,000 Jews lived in Dnipro dubbed as the “Jewish capital of Ukraine” as the city held the largest number of Jewish educational institutions in the country. The centre consisted of a shul, kosher restaurants, conference and banquet halls, hotel, youth hostel, classrooms and tourist information centre.

Rebbe’s 120th anniversary of birth marked BY DAVID SAFFER

This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson. Communities around the world will mark the Rebbe’s Hebrew birth date on Tuesday, Nissan 11 with a farbrengen. Born in Nikolayev (Mykolaiv), Ukraine, on April 18, 1902, to Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and Rebbitzin Chana Schneerson, events have taken place in advance of a historic day including some 200 Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries from around the world participating at a conference at US Capital. White House officials, House and Senate members, foreign ambassadors, senior diplomats, US and overseas academics participated. The day concluded with a gala banquet in the Presidential Ballroom of the Marriott Marquis Hotel. Keynote speakers included Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Natan Sharansky and Senator Joseph Lieberman. Rabbi Dr. Naftali Loewenthal of University College London and Hon. Marcus Solomon, Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia gave the Living Legacy Tribute Lecture. A diplomatic luncheon was attended by Kiev’s Chief Rabbi Rav Yonatan Markovitch. Rabbi Yehuda Tiechtal of Berlin gave an update about Ukrainian refugees. The programme was chaired by Rabbi Levi Shemtov,

American Friends of Lubavitch. “As long as I am the Majority Leader of the United States Senate, I and Chabad, and yididshkeit in general, will be like this,” Senator Schumer said. Hoyer added, “We are as one in our brothership and sistership with the Jewish community.” The war in Ukraine was a discussion topic throughout the day. The Rebbe was born in Mykolaiv, near Mariupol and Kherson, Rabbi Menachem which came under heavy M. Schneerson z”l bombardment by Russian forces. Sharansky, said that before the internet, Chabad had a network “all over the world that took care of every Jew”. Lieberman recalled a visit with the Rebbe before he was sworn in as a senator in 1989. “’Don’t be discouraged if things don’t go your way,’” the Rebbe told him. “‘Remember, you have a purpose, you have a destiny that comes from Torah.’” Rabbi Shemtov said it served as a public demonstration of the ability of the ChabadLubavitch movement to “maintain togetherness” and “transcend partisanship” in D.C. “We hope to harness this, now that life is coming back from the COVID-19 period, so that there can be a great exchange of ideas,

action where there’s agreement and understanding where there might not be agreement, with people who don’t normally interact with each other to come together.” The Rebbe’s teachings on Torah, celebrating festivals and every aspect of Jewish life resonate to this day and will continue into the future. This week 34,000 people packed Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium for a night of ChasPHOTO: WIKIMEDIA sidic song and words honouring the Rebbe’s legacy. The Rebbe saw each birthday as an occasion to call for growth of Chabad activities and outreach. Aged 70, he spoke against the concept of retirement. Indeed, he requested 71 new Chabad-Lubavitch institutions in the coming year. His followers took up the challenge. Echoing the Rebbe’s call in 1972, Chabad are setting up 1,210 new institutions led by the Vaad Or Vechom organisation. They include Chabad centres in Costa Rica, where Chabad have been since 1989 and Pittsburgh where the first Chabad institution opened in 1943. New mikvahs are being built around the world from Accra, Ghana to Montego Bay, Jamaica.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Rabbi Yaakov and Mushkee Raskin co-direct Chabad Jamaica. “For seven years, I’ve been accompanying women to the ocean,” said Mushkee, who serves women in the community as a registered dietician and nutritionist. “Finally, there will be a mikvah here.” “Women won’t have to brave high seas for the mitzvah,” she added. Rabbi Raskin commented, “This is the most beautiful gift we can present the Rebbe with on his birthday.” The Rebbe’s forefathers had been the city’s chief rabbis since 1854. He celebrated his bar mitzvah in what is now Dnipro and helped his parents care for refugees expelled from Czarist Russia. The Rebbe’s father was arrested by the secret police in 1939, tortured and exiled to Kazakhstan. For decades the Rebbe secretly strengthened Jewish life behind the Iron Curtain but as the Soviet Union fell apart he sent emissary couples to Ukraine. Over 30 cities had synagogues, schools and social-service centers. Giant menorahs were amongst many activities. In 2016, Mykolaiv and Dnipro renamed streets after the Rebbe. Since the Russian invasion, Chabad has helped over 35,000 people escape and will continue to do so. The future is uncertain for the country of the Rebbe’s birth but his association with Ukraine remains.

Pesach and Ukraine Homes are prepared to host internally displaced people overnight as they flee to the west

BY PAUL ANTICONI

I am writing this on an especially sobering day, as disturbing reports are emerging from Irpin and Bucha, near Kiev. Shallow graves and bodies in basements point towards the indiscriminate killing of Ukrainian civilians and are prompting accusations of Russian Genocide. This morning I spoke to Oleksiy Tolkachev, Founder and Director of our partner Dreamland, who is based in Kyiv. Over the weekend he visited Irpin and Bucha to assess the situation. The city of Irpin was liberated days ago, after a whole month of fierce fighting. Oleksiy painted a picture of a city totally destroyed. Homes and infrastructure have been bombed to the ground and at least 5,000 people remain in the cellars where they have been desperately sheltering from danger. The road into Irpin has been demined so Oleksiy has been able to deliver World Jewish Relief funded humanitarian aid, hot food, fuel, and clothing, to its grief-stricken and traumatised residents. Oleksiy hopes that Bucha, and the other nearby city of Gostomel, will be liberated this week. He has witnessed rocket fire and street fighting, and tells me there is currently no mobile communication, no electricity, no hospitals, no food, and no medicine available in the cities. No one knows how many people have survived the sieges. He is preparing to return as soon as possible with the necessary food and medicines. Speaking to Oleksiy I was struck once again by the everyday bravery and heroism of all our partners in Ukraine. Their determination to carry on working in extreme and dangerous conditions, risking their own safety to reach the most vulnerable people with lifesaving assistance, is astonishing.

On days like today I despair at the scale of Ukrainian suffering, and how many more people we still need to help. But our partners’ unyielding commitment inspires me and my hardworking team to do more, helping them to help those in desperate need. There is so much more still to do. Millions of Ukrainians unable to access humanitarian aid. Cities under siege that only organisations like ours, thanks to our web of local partner NGOs, can access with urgent supplies. Older people alone in dilapidated Soviet-build homes, with nowhere to shelter from bombing and no family to care for them. More than 4 million Ukrainians in limbo, having fled across borders and now stateless, refugees with no idea what tomorrow will bring for them. We are taught on Seder night that as we recall our ancestors’ exodus, it is as if we ourselves are leaving the Land of Egypt, our homes and everything we know. For Ukrainians today, this isn’t such a stretch of the imagination. This Pesach families will be separated by borders, and some will be mourning loved ones. Many will be experiencing what it feels like to be a ‘stranger in a strange land’. One mother of two we have assisted in Chisinau, who wanted to remain anonymous, shared how challenging it has been to leave her home behind: “It has been hard explaining to my daughters what is happening, but I needed to be honest. I told them that our country has been invaded, that a war has started, and that we needed to leave. They are used to the familiarity of our lives in Odesa and leaving that all behind was really difficult.” So, as I prepare to come together with family this Seder night, my thoughts will be with Ukrainians and in particular the Jewish community. The older generation has lived through the Holocaust,

Communism, the fall of the Soviet Union, and now the Russian invasion. Thanks to our partners in Ukraine, Poland and Moldova some families will celebrate Pesach in Jewish community centres and feel a little more connected to community at this terrible time. Jteen – How we are helping the teenagers of our community BY RABBI YAAKOV BARR, PSYCHOTHERAPIST AND FOUNDER OF JTEEN

CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT JTEEN IS?

Jteen is a non-profit, volunteer-led organization committed to helping Jewish teens receive the emotional support they need. Our main service is Jteen Support, a text support service available every weekday from 6pm until midnight.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Any person from the age of 11-20 can text in completely anonymously. We can’t see their number, and neither will we ask for names. We will offer non-judgemental support and help the teen figure out ways that they can feel better. Sometimes we will signpost a teen to a more appropriate resource or service or empower him/her to reach out to parents and teachers.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TEXT?

Text is a format with which teens are both familiar and comfortable, whilst at the same time it enables us to maintain strong standards of supervision. We have

found that the anonymity and confidentiality that text provides has enabled teens to share their inner most feelings in ways that I never thought possible. However, we also recognise that not all teens have access to text or prefer this medium and therefore we are opening a phone line too, after Pesach IYH.

Rabbinical Board which comprises a team of highly regarded Rabbonim and Rebbetzins from within N.W. London, led by Rabbi S.F. Zimmerman (Head of Federation Beis Din). Our clinical advisory board contains experts in mental health and is led by John Cameron OBE, the former head of the NSPCC helpline. All our volunteer counsellors have received extensive counselling and call-handling training from our training programme. Qualified therapists as well as safeguarding officers are on hand for, supervision, more complex problems, or potential safeguarding issues.

HAVE YOU FOUND THAT TEENS HAVE BEEN RESPONSIVE?

The interest and enthusiasm has been unbelievably positive. Teens have reached out when they are in their darkest places, or just when something smaller has been bothering them. In just over a year since we have opened we have been contacted by Jewish teens over 2,300 times!

THERE WILL BE SOME PARENTS WHO WILL BE UNCOMFORTABLE FOR THEIR CHILD TO REACH OUT. HOW CAN YOU ALLAY THEIR FEARS?

Like every parent, we hope, of course, that our children never feel they need to reach out for help and that they will come and

Jteen Trustee Avi Barr with John Cameron at the Jteen First Anniversary event held recently in North West London

talk to us. However, experience shows that teenagers do often find themselves facing emotional difficulties. It is so inspiring that we are now seeing many more teens who are contacting us because their parents encourage it. Where a hashkofa or halachic issue arises, we are guided by our

DO YOU THINK THERE IS STILL TOO MUCH RELUCTANCE WITHIN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY TO TACKLE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES?

The world has taken great strides in recent years in reducing the stigma of emotional health. However, within communities the challenge is greater. So yes, we are making progress in breaking down the barriers but there is still so much more we must do as a community.

Project Light: A humanitarian success story BY DANIEL BURGER, CHIEF EXECUTIVE

On Monday 21st March, a specially chartered flight that was due to leave Warsaw for the UK with 52 orphans was cancelled at the very last minute. I was sitting in the operations room at Heathrow airport when staff at Virgin Atlantic realised that paperwork that needed to be filed in Poland had not arrived from war-ravaged Ukraine. We waited and waited, everything on hold. Until, late that Tuesday night, we received the official communication that the rescue flight could take off from Heathrow at midday on Wednesday. By 8pm on Wednesday night the orphans were safe on UK soil. And what’s more, the delay had meant that Sally Becker – the ‘Angel of Mostar’ - had been able to save another two children and bring the total to 54. This was the endpoint of ‘Project Light’ - an unparalleled and ambitious project by a coalition of charities including Dnipro Kids, Save a Child UK and Magen David Adom UK. Why did we, the UK arm of Israel’s national emergency and blood services, get involved in this mission? The answer is simple: we were asked to help and save more lives. How could anyone say no? When our brand ambassador Rob Rinder called in desperation at the plight of these kids, he asked me if I could get a plane to airlift them to safety. I immediately thought of our friend Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, who instantly accepted the challenge of flying these children home - despite Virgin having never flown to Warsaw before. Esso supplied all the fuel. Medical aid was onboard. We had Disney stuffed toys to hand out. Essentials packs of donated items. Even the onboard meals were gifted. Not one person asked for one penny for anything. Within a little over a week, Rob’s phone call had turned into the most incredible, heart-warming humanitarian success story. Standing at the doorway as the kids made their way up the stairs – boarding a plane for the very first time – it was impossible not to appreciate both the human tragedy and the human victory. The tragedy of the orphans and their already difficult lives further ruined by a needless war. The victory of the human spirit – the good that can happen when people work together for a common goal. Yet, to see these children with one bag each – their entire world stuffed into a rucksack – brought home the frailty of our existence. A new toy, a pack of essentials and a pair of trainers – their life’s possessions doubled 40,000 feet up in the air. This was the start of a new chapter for them – they are now in Scotland, where they will be able to live without fear, as all children should, before hopefully

returning home to a peaceful Ukraine. This mammoth operation was only possible thanks to the generosity and hard work of so many, without any funds being diverted or redirected form our core projects. It was a privilege to be involved in Project Light – a day I will remember forever. Saving more lives is Magen David Adom’s

reason for being and we will continue to support the people of Ukraine. From supplying ambulances and medical aid (as our colleagues in Israel continue to do) to making this brilliant rescue flight happen, we are doing all we can to support the country and its citizens. If you are able, please donate and help make this possible.

Not only are our MDA colleagues continuing their work to help the people of Ukraine as they face this ongoing humanitarian crisis, but terror has returned to the streets of Israel. Very recently, 11 Israelis have been murdered in deadly terror attacks – the first during a car-ramming and knifing attack in Be’er Sheva and a second a few days later, where two people died after being gunned down by two terrorists in Hadera.

Multiple calls were received at MDA’s Medical Dispatch Centre reporting a shooting with five victims in Bnei Brak. Our responders were on scene within seconds of the initial reports. In addition here was another attack where MDA EMTs and Paramedics treated a victim injured by knifing in the Gush Etzion region. Following Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s announcement that the country is “currently dealing with a new wave of terrorism”, MDA’s role as Israel’s only National Blood and Medical Emergency Service is as vital now than it ever has been. This month also saw a flight of MDA doctors, paramedics and EMTs, along with staff from Ichilov Hospital, touch down in Moldova. They are staffing our latest emergency clinic in Kishinev, providing vital medical equipment and medications to support refugees who have fled Ukraine. This clinic was set up following a request from the local Jewish community and will be a focal point of our response going forward, assisting hundreds of refugees who have taken treacherous routes to reach safety. We are continuing to run our other emergency field hospital inside Ukraine in partnership with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside our Call Centre helpline for refugees still in Ukraine and those arriving in Israel, manned with Russian and Ukrainian speakers.

Chai is always there for clients BY DAVID SAFFER

Chai Cancer Care provides specialist services as the Jewish community’s national cancer support organisation. Chai’s Pesach postal appeal focuses on a family where one diagnosis creates a ripple effect. The charity currently supports 3,600 cancer patients and loved ones. There is no charge for services. Without statutory funding Chai depends on the Jewish community, the generosity of its loyal supporters makes what they do possible. Chai aids anyone affected by cancer, including patients, families and friends. Eleven UK centres includes a flagship operation in Hendon. Chai responds to calls within 24 hours. There are no waiting lists. Counselling, complementary and physical therapies, advocacy, group and social activities are available among a plethora of services to clients nationally and internationally. Whether financial, legal, medical or nutritional advice to acupuncture, hypnotherapy, reflexology, Reiki, Pilates and bereavement counselling, clients are offered bespoke support from professional staff. Chai works in partnership with the NHS, social services, schools, Jewish voluntary agencies, community groups, hospitals and hospices. Chai links with agencies following a cancer diagnosis. There is an outpatient rehabilitation and palliative care service, three-way collaboration with the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care based at Chai. The charity celebrated its 30th anniversary during the pandemic although it could not offer most complimentary therapies. With measures easing Chai is offering many of its necessary services. “We are still seeing the effects of Covid-19,” said Chai chairman Louise Hagar. “A number of clients described it as an extra layer of trauma being diagnosed during the pandemic. They were at home, they could not get out and it was hard to get treatment. It’s hard enough being diagnosed, there are many emotions and they had to go to hospital on their own. Even now, there are certain hospitals where you have to be dropped outside the entrance which is very hard. “Things have eased with some hospital visits, but it’s very stressful. And that is where Chai comes in to help clients process what they are going through. But with extra restrictions, not being able to see family members makes things harder to cope with emotionally.” “Uncertainty with finances is an issue,” said Louise. “We can help clients access paperwork for grants or allowances they did not realise they are eligible for. It

Chai’s billboard outside of their flagship centre in Hendon

can make a difference with heating or transport to hospital and extra things that can happen when they are diagnosed. We can point clients in the right direction to navigate forms as it can be complicated.” Whilst Covid-19 cases are rising in areas of the country are services back to normal at Chai? “Everything is back ‘face to face’ apart from groups which we hope will be back in May,” said Louise. “But it will be a hybrid as not everyone wants to come in. Groups developed on Zoom. Before Covid-19 everyone had to come in to Chai, now clients can access groups all over the country. An unexpected positive from the pandemic was how people access us even from abroad. Clients have a choice of face-to-face sessions or group services. That is the point of Chai, to give people choice and meet as many of their needs as possible.” Louise added, “Self-image is really important. Clients may lose hair or gain weight as a result of treatment. We have now been able to start back services that help. Nails for example can be affected by treatments so a manicure helps. A client recently came in for a manicure and felt so much better afterwards when they went home. Self-image does not just impact a client but the whole family. The bereavement group met on Zoom

through the pandemic, when they came back in-person to thank the counsellor it was magical. Chai managed to reach many more people and they didn’t feel isolated. They might have been physically isolated but were emotionally supported. Every step of the way Chai was there and clients knew that.” Are any new services coming on board at Chai? “We are always looking to develop, where there is a need we will look into whether it is something we can sustain,” noted Louise. She added, “It is not just about one person, we support a family from as young as three years of age to 95 years of age. Anybody that is affected by a cancer diagnosis in the community Chai is there for them.” Looking to the future, is Chai a stronger after pandemic? “We started new groups during the pandemic, we grew as an organisation,” commented Louise. “We had to find a way to carry on supporting everyone, physically how could we do it through other methods, so we definitely grew. If someone beforehand contacted Chai, I would go see them or they would come to us. Now we can do assessments over the phone. We’ve always been flexible but have become more innovative and are looking out of the box. Groups is a prime

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

example how we reached more people and we will carry on doing that.” Louise paid tribute to an “incredible” Chai team. “They have really gone above and beyond to ensure our clients receive maximum support as possible,” enthused Louise. “The team makes us what we are. The commitment of everyone at Chai is incredible. They go above and beyond, that gives us the reputation of being caring and always being there for clients.” The history of the charity goes back to 1989 with Chai Lifeline. Landmark events in the 1990s included Chai’s first base in Golders Green and fundraising dinner. Re-named Chai Lifeline Cancer Care in 2001, the decade saw a major expansion with home, teenage and family services and official opening of a refurbished Chai Centre by The Duke of Kent in 2004. A first satellite service launched in Redbridge followed by South London, Manchester, Glasgow, South Manchester, Hackney and Southend by the end of the decade. The most recent decade has seen the outpatient and palliative care service, Chai in schools programme, services in Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham and an image resource centre in Hendon. Wild Animal Shnitzels & Beef 'Bearger' Patties

Seder night is maybe the one time it's acceptable for kids to play with their food. We wanted to bring some levity to the table and our wild animal burgers and shnitzels do just that. Each recipe makes 6 pieces. They are child-sized portions, but as an added meat option they present a fun extra, even if you only have big kids at the Seder. We have given you two meaty options for making this one, but if you would like a vegan alternative, scan the QR code opposite. Both of these meat recipes use a large bear animal cookie cutter—we tried a number of different cutters but found the large bear was the best. We bought ours on Amazon and you can find the link for the exact cutter we chose on page 4. Midrash says that after the second plague, the bodies of frogs littered the cities of Egypt, but after the fourth plague, the animals disappeared as miraculously as they came, so that the valuable skins could not be plundered. So eat up, and leave no burgers or shnitzels behind!

Perhaps it's not quite the same trying to eat a burger between two pieces of Matza, but our beef 'beargers' are quick, delicious, fun and waste-free. Plus, these patties are so simple to make that even the kids could do it–so why not get them involved in the meal prep?

This is the more labour intensive of the two, and costs a little more–you will need six turkey breasts for this, which will only make you six schnitzels–but you can save the offcuts for a turkey stir fry or bake for another meal. (Head to wearetaam.com for more recipe ideas).

Beat your turkey pieces out flat (to do this, we placed in a ziplock and then gave them a good bash with a foiled rolling pin). On a chopping board, push out the shape using the sharp edge of the animal cutter, banging down the edges with the rolling pin if necessary, and use a sharp knife (or meat scissors) to cut away the excess.

Teenager Abi fronts Camp Simcha appeal Teenager Abi Jacobs has fronted Camp Simcha’s Pesach campaign this year, explaining why her life is different to most other children – and how the charity helps mitigate this. Abi, 14, from Borehamwood, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in December 2020. “Being ill changed me physically and mentally,” explains Abi. “I used to be so busy and active, out having fun with my friends all the time. Once I got diagnosed and started treatment I was too tired to go out; chemotherapy made me feel sick and exhausted. “I felt scared to go out because there was a risk my blood wouldn’t clot if I hurt myself and I would have to go back into hospital. I just wanted to be with my family where I felt safe. “Camp Simcha helped my family by taking care of everything else so they could take care of me. They just knew there were things we needed and arranged them without us asking. “ The charity has been supporting Abi, her parents and her siblings since her diagnosis and throughout her treatment. A dedicated Family Liaison Officer provides emotional support and ensures the whole family

receives bespoke care, from transport to hospital appointments and therapeutic singing lessons for Abi, to equine therapy for her brother Josh, who has struggled to cope with his sister’s illness. Abi’s mum, Lara, said: “Abi’s diagnosis came in the middle of the night and we were admitted to hospital, then and there, with no warning. The very next day, Sam, a Family Liaison Officer from Camp Simcha, got in touch and told me she was sending in some things I might need. Sam arranged so many practical things, as well as the equine therapy for my son Josh, but also lovely treats to boost us.” Abi says the singing has been a big part of how she has coped with her diagnosis and treatment. The teenager explained that it has been a really therapeutic way of expressing her emotions, so much so that in June 2021 she released a charity single to raise money for Camp Simcha and other charities that have supported her, as well her future care needs. Her cover version of Jealous by Labrinth, has raised over £12,000 to date, and has received messages of support from celebrities such as comedian Matt Lucas; Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker and presenter Emma Willis.

Project ImpACT has supported Chai with lots of different initiatives over the years from bag packing to challah braiding and this year was no different. On Sunday 27th March and Sunday 3rd April, two groups of teenage volunteers were invited into Chai’s flagship centre in Hendon to make up and package Pesach boxes to be given out to children supported by Chai and their siblings to enjoy at their Seder tables. During both sessions, the volunteers were given a tour of Chai’s facilities including the Children’s Play Therapy rooms and the Teenage Resource Centre. They then set about making up and packing 100 boxes of goodies including Seder games, trivia cards and toys. Each box was hand finished with a written Pesach message for the recipient. Community Relationship Manager Caroline Tunkel said: “We had two fantastic sessions with Project ImpACT and we are thrilled to have had the chance to once again show their teenage volunteers around the centre so they could see first-hand the work we do at Chai. We know the boxes will bring smiles to many seder tables this year.”

IN ASSOCIATION WITH OUR FEATURED CHARITY

Shining Stars at Langdon In order to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution of all staff, Tuesday evening saw the first ever Langdon Stars event. Following over 160 nominations from staff and the families of our Members, 17 awards were presented, including two for Outstanding Achievement. The last couple of years have stretched us all, none more so than front line staff at Langdon, who, throughout the Pandemic were delivering essential practical and emotional support to our Members, helping them adapt to the ever changing situation. They spent months trying to keep members’ spirits up, finding and creating safe activities for them to take part in when so little was available. Everyone had to get used to working very differently, not knowing how the virus was going to affect them individually, and sadly staff experienced the loss of family members, colleagues and Langdon Members. Very little could have prepared them for these months and years, but yet true to the Langdon values, they handled it all with integrity, dedication and compassion, working harder than ever to respond to members’ needs. Outstanding Achievement for Manchester went to Patrick Regan, a Support

Patrick Regan with HR Manager Eleri Russell

Worker, who has spent over 14 years at Langdon, was described as loyal, kind, exceptionally patient and a real team player loved by staff and members alike. Martyn Hyland received the London award, for his work as an e-traders assistant at New Chapters, Langdon’s book selling social

enterprise. Martyn has Cerebral Palsy and a mild learning disability whose hard work, excellence and dedication is fundamental to the operations at New Chapters. The surprise award of the night went to Venetta (Vee) Bailey from Manchester, for long service. Vee has shown, dedication,

loyalty, courage, and strength during her 20 years of service for Langdon. Neil Taylor, Chief Executive said “Every single Langdon staff member should be very proud of the contributions they make to enable our members to live their very best lives, and be their best true selves”.

Emunah continues to care for Israel’s venerable children

BY SHARON DEWINTER DIRECTOR, BRITISH EMUNAH

A few weeks ago, after two long years, I was able to revisit Emunah’s projects in Israel. After each heart-breaking meeting with the Directors of the centres, I realised that the continued support of our donors really does change lives. From our day care centres, residential centres, crisis and intervention centres and high schools, it was visible and

tangible the difference that is made. At our residential centre in Even Shmuel, Neve Landy, I saw the difference that refurbishing the dorms has made to the boys who live there. The Astro turf that is now in all outside areas enables the boys to play sports all day ever day and there is now more than enough space for the boys should they wish to have somewhere to go alone and contemplate and think without being surrounded by other residents. In the Sarah Herzog

Residential Centre in Afula I saw the pride the boys have in their new dorms and how your donations enable each child to access the type of therapy that will benefit them most. At the Sarah Ronson Crisis and intervention Centre in Sderot I saw the benefits that this state of the art new centre is providing to its residents and further afield as more therapists can treat many more patients weekly. I heard from both High Schools we support in Bnei Brak how thanks to the Food Fund the children are able to concentrate and achieve so much more having eaten their one hot meal every day. In this day and age no child should ever go hungry… and yet Emunah is seeing this every day in its high schools and after school programme. Nearly 400 children benefit from Emunah’s Food Fund which provides the vital one hot meal a day that they would otherwise not receive. Any leftover food is given to the children to take home for the rest of their family, helping them too. One example - ‘R’ and ‘H’. Both are children in a family, formerly from the Soviet Union, who came to Emunah with financial difficulties and emotional problems as a result of the desertion of their father. The girls were at real risk, in the afternoons they hung around with kids that were not influencing them in a positive manner. It was very difficult to

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

get them to come to school, not to mention getting them to devote themselves to their studies. Teachers took them under their wing and never ceased pushing them to come to school. It was apparent that both had high aptitudes and Emunah knew they could succeed with the right support. Because of their difficult economic situation, the girls had to work in every free moment. It negatively impacted on their studies and the family still did not have enough money for food. The girls were provided with a hot meal at school and leftover food packages were sent home so that they would be free to study and work less. Both successfully passed their matriculation exams and are very successful in their current positions. All thanks to the support of Emunah and the Food Fund. Emunah needs to raise £100,000 a year to continue to provide these meals. That’s just £265 a child for a year (less than £1 a day). Will you gift a child the ability to concentrate, learn and get the nourishment they need to succeed? You won’t directly see the benefits of your generosity but I can promise you it will make a difference. Let’s give every child in Emunah’s care that gift. You can help more children like them by visiting www.emunah.org.uk/donate

Mastering the Chumash ImpACT for Ukrainian Children Rebbetzin Ehrentreu was the guest of honour at the Hasmonean Girls’ School assembly last Friday. She came to present fifteen girls with certificates upon their completion of Sefer Bereishis in the Master the Chumash programme. This is a new initiative in the Hasmonean Midrasha (Sixth Form Jewish Studies programme) whereby the girls learn three perakim (chapters) of Chumash each week with the aim of finishing the entire Torah during their time in the Midrasha. The advanced track includes learning all of the Rashi as well. The girls are tested monthly on their learning and have achieved consistently high results. Rebbetzen Ehrentreu spoke about the importance of PAL - having a Positive Attitude towards Learning, and told the girls how impressed she was with their achievement. The girls were spellbound as she told them the story of Rosa Goldstein, whose life was saved because she was determined to keep Shabbos in America – a true example of perseverance to keep mitzvos no matter the circumstances. The entire school was left uplifted by Rebbetzen Ehrentreu’s visit together with the achievement of the Sixth Form girls. Rabbi Dov Birnbaum, Head of Midrasha, commented: “it was a real honour

Rebbetzin Ehrentreu speaking to the girls

for us to host Rebbetzin Ehrentreu at Hasmonean and gave us all tremendous chizzuk. A number of students have already asked me to join our Master the Chumash programme for Sefer Shemos!” Rabbi Golker, Hasmonean’s Menahel, added: “It was an honour to welcome Rebbetzen Ehrentreu to our assembly. As I told our students, we were welcoming Jewish royalty to our school!” It was a wonderful opportunity for the Rebbetzen to see the amazing work that Rabbi Birnbaum is doing in the Midrasha.”

Project ImpACT volunteers packing welcome packs for Ukranian children

Project ImpACT teens once again arrived in droves to volunteer and aid those in need. The young volunteers sorted and packed special Welcome Packs for Ukrainian refugee children in Poland and Moldova as well as for those arriving in the UK. The ‘army’ of volunteers from across 25 secondary schools organised a sea of notepads, pens, felt tips, colouring books and activity books that had been collected through generous donations from Deloitte, Uniform4Kids, Product Network and JW3 staff. The welcome packs were requested by local charities to give to Ukrainian children fleeing the war. ImpACT volunteers filled an incredible 600 individual backpacks with stationery items and treats and also added personal messages of support and love. These were then packed into large boxes ready for distribution by Goods for Good. In total, the hardworking volunteers packed 30 boxes filled with welcome packs and 45 boxes of personal hygiene items at JW3. The teens also heard from Alisa Avigdor, Head of Philanthropy at World Jewish

Relief who spoke about the work they are doing in the UK and on the front line in Ukraine. The teens listened attentively and had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions which made the event very meaningful. Project ImpACT Ambassador Abigail Marin said. “It was amazing to see how many welcome packs we filled for Ukrainian children. Everyone was busy and active, working together to make a difference” This was echoed by ImpACT teen volunteer Biance Polny who said “It was inspiring to be part of a session with my friends, all volunteering together to support ukrainian refugees especially the children. We all want to do something to help”. Project ImpACT inspires and engages young people to volunteer and make an ImpACT through meaningful volunteering and social action. Pesach Supplement of the London Beth Din - Pesach 5782/2022

KLBD - Kashrut for the Community avoid this product like the plague. After exploring many options, KLBD eventually managed to coordinate a supervised packing of Kosher l’Pesach icing sugar, once again bearing the additional costs of Passover inspection and supervision. Over the past few years KLBD has succeeded in certifying a range of Nescafe coffees, Yorkshire Tea, Tate & Lyle granulated and caster sugar and Saxa salt for all year round including Pesach, thereby ensuring that these key products are available for Pesach at no extra cost. In addition, the extensive research that has gone into the guidance given in this supplement will help to make Pesach cheaper and easier for many. More information is available on our website www.kosher.org.uk/passover. KLBD wishes the entire community a Chag Kasher v’Sameach. Rabbi Shlomi Wise KLBD Rabbinic Coordinator The Yom Tov of Pesach is synonymous with tradition. For many families, it is simply not good enough to rid their houses of chametz, they have to do the spring cleaning at the same time. They dream of their grandmother’s kneidelach, or smile when they recall their youngest child singing the Ma Nishtana, as has been done generation after generation. Whilst some things never change, one thing that, sadly, does seem to change every year, is the price of the Pesach shopping. Is it only our imagination, or do the bills really stack up higher every year? Even for those of us who make our own charoset, carefully clean the romaine lettuce ourselves, or grate the horseradish for our Sedarim, there is no denying that the cost of Pesach is daunting. Fortunately the main staples, meat and poultry, fruit and vegetables are the same price Pesach time as they are year round. It is also worth remembering that whilst four cups of wine are mandatory, four cups of Kosher l’Pesach Coke (specially made with

Kosher l’Pesach caramel and supervised flavours) are an optional extra! So ?‫– מה נשתנה השנה הזאת מכל השנים‬ ‘How is this year different from all other years?’ Well, those of us who haven’t been living in some desert cave will have noticed that the cost of living has become prohibitively expensive! As if Covid, Brexit, supply chain failures, and inflation weren’t enough, there are also two other major problems causing havoc. Firstly, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, besides causing a terrible humanitarian disaster, has had a significant knock-on effect, resulting in a global shortage of wheat, corn and sunflower oil. Who knew that the Ukraine and Russia between them produced the majority of the world’s sunflower oil! Secondly, and less well known is that this follows a calamitous 2021 which saw the effects of drought in Argentina and Brazil, severe famine in Madagascar, wildfires in Western USA, floods in East and West Africa, as well as crop failures in Afghanistan, Syria and Turkey, one of the largest exporters of certain items such as apricots and tomatoes. The list goes on and on.

KLBD are conscious of the strain this puts on families. The US Chesed department, who have worked tirelessly throughout the past two years of the Covid pandemic, continue to see a dramatic rise in the number of Jewish families asking for support in order to make ends meet. KLBD have tried to do what we can to ensure that access to a wide range of kosher products should not become only the privilege of the wealthy. For instance, KLBD had arranged production of a supervised batch of sunflower oil for Pesach and were planning to absorb the costs of supervision. Unfortunately, however, it became apparent that there is simply no sunflower oil coming into the country. So instead, our dedicated team researched other avenues and with the cooperation of other kashrut agencies, have been able to approve alternative sunflower oil products for this year (see adjacent box). Another example was the sourcing of Pesach icing sugar at a reasonable price. Standard icing sugar commonly contains starch, making it chametz or kitniyot. Having found a suitable product, there was a further challenge: as it is a fine powder, it is most difficult to pack. Filling bags at the regular speed inevitably leads to a white dust cloud, with much of it ending up on the floor rather than in the bag. Therefore, most factories

FRESH PRECUT FRUIT & VEGETABLES Precut fresh fruit and vegetables are not approved due to the fact that Citric Acid (potentially of chametz origin) is commonly used to prevent discolouration. There is no problem with precut fresh herbs or herbs grown in pots. Chopped herbs should be avoided as they cannot easily be checked for infestation. FROZEN FISH Frozen fish, whole or filleted, is permitted, provided that no other ingredients have been added. It is advisable to rinse the fish before use. Please note that when buying fish from a non-supervised source, it is important to make sure that some skin is attached. For a list of kosher fish, see The Really Jewish Food Guide or check www.isitkosher.uk. FROZEN FRUIT Unsupervised frozen fruit should not be used because factories may use ascorbic or citric acid as a processing aid, which is often derived from chametz sources. FROZEN VEGETABLES Unsupervised frozen vegetables should not be used. This is because many factories use starch or citric acid during processing, and some process chametz products on the same lines. Medicines

In general, all facial cosmetics, nail varnish, nail varnish removers, antiperspirants, hairsprays, shampoos, shower gels, baby wipes and soaps may be used as they are inedible. It is better, however, to avoid products which mention the following in the ingredients declaration:

This summary has been compiled by Rabbi A Adler BPharm MRPharmS a practising pharmacist, in consultation with the food technologists of the London Beis Din. A full list of Medicines for Passover can be downloaded from our website at www. kosher.org.uk/passover, or alternatively check our superfast online search www.passover.isitkosher.uk. General points regarding medication for Passover: • In general, all solid dose tablets and prescribed capsules are in order for Passover use. Those who prefer not to take gelatine capsules are advised to ask their physician if they can prescribe the medication in an alternative form. • When taking non-essential medicines, it is preferable to use tablets rather than gelatine capsules. • Wherever possible, tablets or capsules should be used rather than liquid or chewable preparations, as these may contain ingredients such as sorbitol and glucose, which could be derived from wheat. • All inhalers are permitted. • Ointments and creams are permissible, except for those specifying chametz ingredients on the packaging (eg Aveeno cream, based on oats), which should be avoided. • Prescribed medication should not be altered without consulting a doctor.

LIPSTICK Due to the fact that lipstick comes into contact with the mouth, it is preferable to check that it does not contain chametz derived ingredients. The following products have been researched and are free from chametz derivatives. If the perfume is made with denatured alcohol, however, it can be used without concern. Perfumes such as Kuumba Made are declared to be alcohol free. See also the Alcohol Free Fragrances section on Beauty Base (www.beautybase.com). Only brands listed on www.passover. isitkosher.uk have so far confirmed their source of alcohol. Other brands would be permitted, provided denatured alcohol is specified in the ingredients declaration on the bottle.

Special Note About Medication for Children: Most liquid medications for children cannot be guaranteed free of chametz derived ingredients. If it is essential for your child to take a liquid preparation, or you think that they may urgently require it during Pesach, we advise that you include the medicine in question with your sale of chametz. Let your Rabbi know, so that he can arrange with the non-Jewish purchaser to allow such use. It may then be taken from the chametz location, used as necessary, and returned. ANTIBIOTICS, ANTIFUNGALS & ANTIVIRALS All antibiotics in tablet and capsule form are permitted. Sugar free antibiotic liquids should be avoided as they usually contain sorbitol which could be chametz. If a child needs an antibiotic liquid during Pesach, it is preferable to ask the doctor to prescribe one sweetened with sucrose. Your pharmacist should be able to advise if you have been prescribed one containing sorbitol. It should be noted that even though it is becoming more difficult to find antibiotic liquids which are not sugar free, there are still manufacturers that produce these. Ask your pharmacist for advice. P Amoxicillin Suspensions (not sugar free) P Erythromycin Suspensions (not sugar free) NP Nystan Suspension P Nystatin Sandoz Suspension Other brands are not approved. IN ASSOCIATION WITH OUR FEATURED CHARITY

JVN, in partnership with the JLC, hosts Reigniting Volunteering Conference The Jewish Volunteering Network (JVN), together with The Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) hosted their first in-person volunteering event since the pandemic began. The event was designed to help charities confront the changes that have occurred post pandemic, to reengage and reenvisage volunteering within the Jewish community and the wider sector. Daniel Levy, Chair of JVN opened the conference, welcoming almost 100 people, including CEO’s and Volunteer Managers representing over 40 charities. Speakers included Joe Saxton, founder of nfpSynergy and Heyheyjoe, Catherine Johnstone CBE, CEO of the Royal Voluntary Service who organised the NHS response during lockdown and Shaun Delaney, Head of Volunteering Policy, and Partnerships with DCMS. Keith Black, Chair of the JLC closed the event. Volunteering, the bedrock on which our society is built has suffered enormous challenges over the past two years. Pre-pandemic changes were accelerated by Covid with charities discovering that volunteers as well as the roles they filled were changing. Keynote speaker, Joe Saxton, supported this by sharing data revealing more younger volunteers have taken up roles in the voluntary sector than ever before. The conference allowed CEOs and Volunteer Managers the space to come together to explore the power and value of volunteering. The goal was to help charities think differently and reshape the way they view volunteering with the need to recognise that trends have changed. Regular volunteering has become more transactional, and volunteers are looking for hybrid rather than traditional roles. We need to build skills and improve social mobility and life chances through volunteering possibilities. Catherine Johnstone, CBE, Chief Executive of the Royal Voluntary Service, said “The pandemic reminded us of the importance of a deeply rooted civic society. For some members of our community volunteers provided a critical lifeline and helped buffer some of the harshest impacts of the pandemic. As we try to navigate continued national and global uncertainty we all need to work together to pay forward the inspiring and remarkable community spirit we have observed over the past 2 years” Our keynote speakers were able to highlight the challenges, explore the lessons of the pandemic and reflect on ways to move forward. As Shaun Delaney, Head of Volunteering Policy, and Partnerships with DCMS says: “Volunteering looks completely different now.

Resources such as emotional support, better training and flexibility are needed to help volunteers return.” One of the attendees, Mushka Cohen-Gluck of Jewish Care, posted on LinkedIn, “Very inspiring morning at the Reigniting Volunteering Conference organised by The Jewish Volunteering Network with a fabulous panel of industry experts Joe Saxton Catherine Johnstone CBE Shaun Delaney. It was great to meet fellow volunteer managers and discuss all aspects of our jobs and share ideas and resources. I am already receiving emails from people I met today to talk about collaborations with their organisations or to share ideas on things we have discussed. It is great to have in-person events back!” Another attendee, Volunteer Manager Jo Selwyn, also of Jewish Care, commented, “Thank you for a wonderful thought-out conference that you held at Hammerson House last week. Firstly, the setting was so inviting, light and spacious, food delicious and your speakers were both enlightening and informative. I really enjoyed it and especially liked how you invited CEOs and Managers so that they can both make a difference together. It was a genius move and one I hope will prove very successful for Jewish Care and the future of volunteering.” Nicky Goldman, JVN’s Chief Executive stated, “We need to understand how these changes will impact the Jewish community which has been built on volunteering. Charities would find it almost impossible to operate without volunteers who support our services - those who sit on trustee boards, committees, raise money, as well as support the face-toface programmes. JVN works in partnership with charities to support them in developing robust volunteer strategies.” Michelle Janes, Co-CEO of the JLC added “We were delighted to partner with JVN to highlight the need to invest in developing volunteering infrastructures within our community. I believe we have a real opportunity to understand the needs of our organisations and our existing and potential volunteers. We can do this by understanding and appreciating the changes we have witnessed during covid in trends and behaviours and to purposefully plan to re-engage and reignite volunteering.” JVN will be running a follow up session in June with volunteering consultant, Rob Jackson. If you have any questions, or for more information, contact nicky@jvn.org.uk

GIFT inspires the community to provide Pesach for the people of Ukraine In response to a request by Rabbi Wolff, Chief Rabbi of Odessa & Southern Ukraine, who last week sent GIFT a video plea to help the thousands of Jews left in Odessa who have no access to Kosher food for Pesach; GIFT stepped up, arranged a 22 ton truck and invited the whole community to join with them to collect Pesach food for the Jews in Odessa as well as providing transport for food and supplies to the FJC (Federation of Jewish Communities in Uman) which sends aid to Chabad’s emissaries on the ground throughout Ukraine. Over 50 organizations from across the community responded to GIFT’s appeal: schools, shuls, youth groups and charities came on board inviting their congregations, participants and students to bring in requested food items. GIFT Events Manager Anoushka Goldman said “ GIFT have collaborated with communities and organisations across the UK in a cohesive effort to bring Pesach food to the Jewish families still in Ukraine. We made every organisation their own personalised

everything a Jewish family would need on Pesach was in the truck and more! What an amazing experience and achievement to be a part of.” Mill Hill’s Rabbi Shochet noted “it was an exceptional effort and a beautiful example of Jewish unity; a community

coming together to help our brothers and sisters in distress.” GIFT’s MD, Rabbi Sandor Milun told us “What was amazing about the Ukraine Pesach appeal was that it embodied exactly the mission of GIFT, inspiring and enabling giving. So many people were inspired to get involved, over 50 organisations -thousands of people getting involved, helping, making a difference by doing so many acts of kindness and positive acts to help others across the world, in dire need. It was an amazing experience seeing people from all walks of life step up; hundreds of volunteers sorting & packing hundreds of thousands of food items and loading the lorry. It was a really special experience and incredible to be part of it. We were exceptionally blessed to have the Mill Hill community come on board to partner with us, as well as incredible contributions from communities far and wide ” GIFT’s mission is to inspire and enable lifelong giving. A spotlight on autism April 2nd has been designated by the UN Autism Awareness Day, a time for raising awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder throughout the world. As autism becomes better understood, a wider range of strategies have evolved to help young people with the condition. At Kisharon Noé School, staff have developed expertise in supporting pupils with autism and headteacher Dr. Emily Haddock is currently studying herself to become an advanced practitioner in Attention Autism, one of the best-known techniques.

when the child is ready to expand their attention skills. In stage 1 a bucket is filled with visually engaging toys, aiming to teach children how to focus their attention. The adult leader presents a toy to the group and uses simple vocabulary to make comments on the objects. In stage 2 highly appealing and visually stimulating practical activities are presented to the group by the adult leader. This stage aims to sustain concentration and attention for a longer period. In stage 3 a simple engaging activity is demonstrated by the adult leader who then invites some children to have a turn. Children learn how to shift their attention to their own individual participation and then back to the group. They also learn essential skills of sharing, understanding missing a turn, turn-taking and waiting. And in stage 4 an adult demonstrates a simple creative task and then gives each child an individual kit to copy. Children focus their attention in a group to watch a demonstration, then shift their attention to an individual activity and lastly return attention to the group to show their completed task. Children also build their independence skills and following instructions. Through this approach staff at Kisharon Noé School have seen students concentrate for extended periods of time and make greater and more rapid progress.

WHAT IS AUTISM?

Autism, which includes Asperger’s Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder is a complex, lifelong developmental condition that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person’s social skills, communication and relationships. The autism experience is different for everyone. It is defined by a certain set of behaviours and is often referred to as a “spectrum condition” that affects people differently and to varying degrees. While there is currently no known single cause of autism, early diagnosis helps a person receive resources that can support the choices and opportunities needed to live fully.1

HOW DOES AUTISM PRESENT?

When family members or support providers become concerned that a child is not following a typical developmental course, they turn to experts, including psychologists, educators and medical professionals, for a diagnosis. At first glance, some people with autism may appear to have an intellectual disability, sensory processing issues, or problems with hearing or vision, and the diagnosis of autism may become more challenging. These conditions can co-occur with autism and it can be confusing to families when they receive multiple diagnoses. However, it is important to identify autism, as an accurate and early diagnosis can provide the basis for appropriate educational and home-based support.2

IS AUTISM ON THE RISE OR MORE DIAGNOSED?

As more people are aware of autism, parents and teachers have become better at signposting it if they suspect children are not following the normal developmental pattern. 1 2

The Kisharon Noé School caters for students with special educational needs of both genders aged 4 to 19. The school has a Jewish ethos and is committed to inclusivity, welcoming students from all backgrounds. HOW BEST TO HELP?

The definition of autism has changed considerably over time as have the criteria for making a diagnosis. The media too has played a part with characters with the condition appearing regularly on screens. The upside is the availability now of new strategies to help.

THE ATTENTION AUTISM PROGRAMME

The highly-regarded and widely used Attention Autism programme, was designed by Gina Davies, a Specialist Speech and

Language Therapist. It aims to develop natural and spontaneous communication through the use of visually based and highly motivating activities. Dr Haddock said: “During the school day we plan activities that are fun, tactile and inviting to a child and they cannot resist participating. We have seen, through these shared positive experiences, that we can build relationships.” The Attention Autism programme progresses through stages, building on each skill level. Each new stage is introduced

The world is ever evolving and so are educational methods tailored to those children who have learning disabilities. Children go to school to learn and grow whilst fulfilling their unique and individual potential, and teaching methods for pupils with autism or other needs should be meaningful, accessible and motivating – giving children the right support now and a brighter future.

South’s 3NT bid was a choice-of-games bid; with only three-card support, North passed and West led a low spade. This time declarer made a plan! He started by counting his tricks. He had 4 top tricks and, as long as diamonds were not 4-0, he would make 4 diamond tricks and the safest plan was to make an extra club trick. Declarer saw that it would be wrong to play on diamonds immediately for, if East had the ace, he would win and play a spade. On this layout the contract would be defeated as the club finesse loses and an endplay will fail (West can put East on lead with the fourth round of spades to lead a club). Consequently, declarer saw that he had to play a club to the queen before touching diamonds. The finesse lost but West could not continue spades effectively from his side of the table. When he exited with a heart, declarer played low from dummy and took the Heart Jack with the ace. East had to win the ♦10 and the contract was safe. Declarer took the spade continuation with the King, unblocked the Ace of clubs and claimed nine tricks.

Charoset

Another delicious recipe from Denise Phillips

Every year, we refer to our own family’s traditional recipe for Charoset but I wonder if you are aware that Charoset actually differs according to our heritage. Having researched world recipes, I have adapted the traditional Ashkenazi one and was given family recipes which originated from Morocco and California. They are all made in the same way; essentially finely chop and combine so

that they look like mortar but of course taste completely different. In Song of Songs, the Jewish people are compared to: apples, pomegranates, figs, dates, walnuts and almonds. Whilst over the centuries many recipes have developed in Jewish communities (see below), these are the main ingredients to be used for Charoset. The Talmud also says that the Charoset

7 APRIL 2022

should be made tangy by using apples commemorating the apple trees under which the Jewish women secretly gave birth in Egypt. (Based on Song of Songs 8:5) Finally, the Talmud says to make the Charoset thick by adding spices, like ginger and cinnamon. This represents the straw and clay which the Jewish slaves used to construct buildings.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com EXPENSIVE AFIKOMENT PRESENTS Dear Rabbi Is it appropriate to give expensive presents to children or stealing the Afikomen? When I was growing up it was always some sweets or something else inexpensive. Today it has become a competition between kids as to who got the better present. Have we lost something in the spirit of the custom? Mindy Dear Mindy First, not everyone has the custom for “stealing” the Afikomen. This, because, we don’t want to educate our children with the notion of stealing anything, even if only for fun (or holding onto it for ransom). Hence the British custom which is distinctly different, whereby the father hides the Afikomen and the children have to find it. When they do, they get a prize. That option, (a) avoids the “bad message” and (b) can enable the parent to set the standard of what that prize will be. (And be sure that all the kids get rewarded equally, even as one might find it over the others. You don’t want to create jealousy either). Truth of the matter is, while there are any number of reasons suggested for the ritual of taking the Afikomen, ultimately it is linked with the notion of engaging our children in order to keep them awake throughout the Seder. This, in fulfilment of the mitzvah of vehigadeta lebincha – telling the Exodus story over to the next generation, which is what Seder night

is really all about. Unfortunately, our spoiled generation has a whole new level of expectations, but we can find the balance in gifting them something that will make it “worth it” for them to stay awake, while at the same time, teaching them something so much more. We need to ask ourselves: What gifts are we imparting to our children? Is it all the transient stuff, of which we can never get enough though here today, gone tomorrow? Or is it something more meaningful, more substantial that no matter what, will always leave an indelible impression. That’s a question for consideration: Are we gifting what our kids want or what we know they need? The Torah relates how Abraham was a man of tremendous wealth and stature. At the end of his life, says the Torah, “he willed all that he owned to his son Isaac, but to the children of Keturah (who was his other wife, Hagar, mother of Ishmael) he left gifts.” Rabbi Yehudah said in the Midrash: to Isaac he left the spiritual – the birthright of the Jewish people. But to Ishmael he left the material gifts. Therein lies our challenge. Don’t educate your children to be rich. Teach them to be happy. So when they grow up they will know the value of things, not the price. Our children are the greatest gift G-d will have given us. We need to, in turn, gift them the spiritual, wrapped in holiness and tied with love. When you’re older nothing else you will have given them will have mattered as much.

Pirkei Avot “Rabbi Levitas of Yavneh taught: Be exceedingly humble for the destiny of man is worms”. A true “incentive” for humility is the realisation that the most mighty man on earth shares the same destiny as the weakest one. About humility we are taught to go to extremes, as Rabbi Ovadia of Bartenura explains, as opposed to other character traits about which the Rambam famously taught one should find a “middle path”. Arrogance has little if any place in Judaism. In fact, some authorities are of the opinion that arrogance is actually one of the 365 negative commandments of the Torah

FINDING MY MATCH IS LIKE SPLITTING SEAS Dear Rabbi I have been with someone now for many months but sadly it came to an end. I was convinced she was the one and was quite upset. Is G-d really involved in the process of leading us to the right one, or is it up to us to make or break the situation? Jeremy Dear Jeremy In the Talmud, we find a discussion regarding matchmaking which emphasises just how difficult the matter is, and it says, “Pairing mates is as difficult as the Splitting of the Sea” - meaning, finding the right boy for the right girl is as hard as splitting an ocean. What’s the connection? The Splitting of the Sea was a supernatural miracle that happened once in human history at the Hand of G-d Himself in all His Glory. Introduction making, on the other hand, despite all its difficulties, produces results which we can see every day: People get married. So what’s the comparison? Even if we are to say that finding your soul mate is a miracle, it’s still not as great a miracle as the Splitting of the Red Sea. I think the point is this: When the Jewish People stood at the edge of the sea, with the water in front of them and the Egyptians behind them, panic and chaos broke out. They immediately began shouting at Moses: “Were there not enough graves in Egypt that you took us to die here?! Why’d you bring us here?” The Midrash tells us that the

Jews split into four camps, each with its own ideology. One said, “Let’s go back to Egypt.” In other words, revert to the status quo. The second group said, “Let’s jump into the sea.” End it all here and now. The third group, more combative said, “Let’s fight them!” Finally, the fourth group, the religious people, said, “Let’s pray!” G-d Himself then responded, ignoring all those groups and instructed Moshe simply, “Tell the Jews to move on.” In other words, for all the best laid plans in the world, sometimes destiny is out of your hands. G-d has something altogether different planned. That’s the reality with matchmaking: Like the story is told of a girl who came to a matchmaker and gave a long list of things she was looking for: “I want a

L’ilui Nishmat all the terror victims in Israel and the Jews of Ukraine - “Beware lest you forget Hashem your G-d”. If one is arrogant, they push away the Divine Presence, so to speak. The Mishnah continues: “Rabbi Yochanan son of Berohka taught: ‘Whoever desecrates Hashem’s name in private faces retribution in public’.” Desecration of G-d’s Name (known as “Chilul Hashem”) does not only mean being impolite to people outside of the faith, although of course it is important to be courteous at all times. One can possibly be guilty of desecrating G-d’s name if one disregards any of the Mitzvot of the Torah for no justifiable reason. Of course, one can and

must repent but this shows the severity of showing insufficient respect for a Mitzvah. The Mishna concludes - one bears a responsibility for Chilul Hashem whether one causes it intentionally or even unintentionally - a person must be constantly conscious of Hashem and of the fact that we represent G-dliness in the world. To end on a positive note - how much more so if one performs a Kiddush Hashem. One who brings honour to the name of Hashem to the world and performs Mitzvot - even in private - is surely going to earn a well-earned reward!

The matchmaker interrupted her: “You know, you’re only allowed to marry one other person!” Even as one has their laundry list of everything they anticipate in their prospective spouse, only G-d knows what’s really best for your soul – hence the term, “soulmate.” And that’s why introduction-making is compared to the Splitting of the Sea: because ultimately, the most unforeseen thing happens. Indeed, even you have your idea of who you think is your perfect match, if it doesn’t go to plan, know that G-d’s got a different plan, something so much better for your soul. So ride the waves and look forward to reaching new shores.

Parshat Metzora:

Speech, Propaganda and Seder Night BY GAVRIEL COHN

This week’s Torah portion describes the procedures that must be taken to cleanse the gossiper inflicted with tzoraat. He is sprinkled with the blood of a bird. The bird offerings, our Sages explain, allude to the leper’s evil speech. “Like birds which twitter constantly with chirping sounds,” this individual was unable to control his tongue. Indeed, speech is immensely powerful. As King Shlomo states, “life and death are in the power of the tongue.” The Torah describes G-d as creating the Universe through speech as speech is perhaps the best metaphor for G-d’s act of creation. The spoken word is both entirely non-physical and ethereal yet, at the same time, it has the capacity to command, control, shape, and build. In those mysterious first moments of man;s creation, G-d breathed the soul of life into him, making him into a “speaking animal” (Onkeles; Rashi). Intelligent speech is what defines us as human beings. All human civilisations start with verbal communication, with one human

AN UNPLEASANT NAME

The sidra is called M’tzora, the Leper. It used to have a simple name, Zot Tihyeh, “This shall be”, in order to avoid the unpleasant implications of M’tzora. Another alternative used in some versions of the Chumash is Taharah, “Purification”. People had a fear of leprosy and preferred not to use the name “The Law of the Leper”. They preferred a name that did not arouse such unpleasant associations. The Lubavitcher Rebbe adds that they looked for a positive name such as Taharah, which implied Repentance.

THE PSALM AGAINST PLAGUES

As this week’s Torah reading demonstrates, religion and medicine have a very long association. Many times in the Bible are illness and disease referred to. Where and why they occur is a major Biblical concern. So is how to respond if they become manifest. Fasting, repentance and prayer all help. So does the saying of psalms. In the Talmud (Shevu’ot 15b) the sages say that Psalm 91 (Yoshev B’Seter) is “a psalm against evil occurrences”, which

being opening his mouth to reach out to another, slowly forming a group. Speech creates cultures and ideologies. As King Shlomo discerned, it can create or destroy the world. It was precisely through speech that Pharaoh was able to begin his brutal persecution of the Jewish People. Initially, he convened a council and gave a charismatic speech: “He said to his people, “Behold, the Children of Israel are more numerous and stronger than we are. Get ready, let us act cunningly with them, lest they increase, and a war befall us and they join our enemies, wage war against us and expel us from the land” (Shemot, 1:9-10). Using his words to create an “us” and

a “them,” Pharaoh began to demark and discriminate against the Jewish People. He spread false rumours against these immigrant people, living peacefully and productively as shepherds in his land, that they were a dangerous fifth column, set out to undermine his kingdom. His words slowly created an ideology and a culture of hate, beginning to destroy the world. He continued this propaganda until he convinced the Egyptian nation to hunt down and drown young infants in the Nile and to subjugate Jewish men and women, “them,” into back-breaking labour (R’ Dovid Soloveitchik, Parshat Shemot). It is for this reason that the Haggadah considers the Egyptian persecution to be synonymous with Pharaoh’s

Speech is the primary means through which we preserve the story of our ancient suffering at the hands of Pharaoh, reciting the Shema twice daily and spending Seder Night talking to a table full of listeners, “telling our children that on this day, we left Egypt.” is why many Jews have added Psalm 91 to their prayers during the long and difficult period of Covid-19. The psalm assures us that even when there is demonic piercing pain one can rely on G-d’s protection. Yet though the Talmud calls Psalm 91 a psalm against evil occurrences, this term is not spelled out in detail. It seems to equate with the strange category of “acts of G-d”, indicating natural rather than man-made disasters. “Acts of G-d” is a technical legal term, not meant literally as Divine intervention in history, but denoting an unforeseeable event which is outside human control and probably not preventable. Yet in a theological sense we could say that ultimately everything is traceable to G-d (Amos 3:6). Events don’t just happen. Christian scripture says, echoing the Talmudic tractate Taanit 7a, that G-d makes the sun rise and sends rain “on the righteous and the unrighteous alike” (Matt. 5:45).

The lawyers have not yet reached a consensus as to whether the pandemic, though it is certainly “an evil occurrence”, is to be deemed “an act of G-d”. A legal friend has kindly drawn my attention to cases in contract law involving the notion of Acts of G-d, which are viewed as exclusively the consequence of natural causes of an extraordinary nature which cannot be anticipated or provided against by a party seeking to rely on it. Whether or not the pandemic comes under this category the crucial thing is to maintain one’s faith in G-d.

GOOD & BAD

The sidra begins with something that seems rather obvious – “This is the law of the leper at the time when he is to be cleansed” (Lev. 14:1). Actually this procedure is not so obvious at all. It makes an assumption – that the leper wants to be cleansed. It then says that in order to cleanse him there

very first antisemitic speech, as we recite in Maggid: “’The Egyptians treated us badly,’” as it is said: ‘Come, let us act cunningly with them...’” This power of speech is not lost on us. Our cries and shouts of despair are what stirred Divine mercy to come to our rescue in Egypt. Furthermore, speech is the primary means through which we preserve the story of our ancient suffering at the hands of Pharaoh, reciting the Shema twice daily and spending Seder Night talking to a table full of listeners, “telling our children that on this day, we left Egypt.” Unlike Pharoah, on Seder Night, we use our speech to express our gratitude to G-d for our freedom (which, according to some, is the primary purpose of Seder Night), and to educate our youth of our history and values. This speech, like the chatter of birds, has endured far longer than the gossip against us, creating a Jewish culture and ideology of which we are so proud. is a set procedure. How about a person who does not, for whatever strange reason, want to be purified? Don’t ask why a leper should be so stupid as to want to keep their status quo. People have their own psychology. Illness of any kind is no blessing in the opinion of most of us, but there are individuals who are exceptions to the rule. The assumption the Torah makes is that any normal person wants to be better. It makes a second assumption, that healing is not only desirable but possible. From the Torah point of view, any illness, physical or mental, must have a cure somewhere, and it is the task of the medical profession to find it. Judaism never said, as do certain other religions, that illness was part of G-d’s design and human beings had no right to intervene. We honour the physician because they are doing G-d’s work.

Calling Out Impurity BY RABBI SHALOM ROSNER

The Torah prescribes several actions that must be performed vis-à-vis a person afflicted with tzara’at: And the leper upon whom the nega is [located] – his clothes shall be ripped, and his head disheveled, and he shall cloak his upper lip and shall cry out: “tamei, tamei.” (Vayikra 13:45) The simple reading of the end of this verse means that the leper has to call out “tamei, tamei” to others, presumably to notify others of his impure state. This is how Rashi understands it. It is also possible that it means that others call “tamei, tamei” as though attesting to his impure state. The Shelah HaKadosh offers a different interpretation based on a Gemara (Kiddushin 72b) that states that one who condemns another condemns with his own faults. A tzaru’a is one who badmouths others, who calls others impure. One who recognizes specific faults with others, who

always highlights others’ shortcomings, is likely subject to the same shortcomings. He publicly denounces it on others to deflect it from himself. The passuk can thus be read as meaning that the impure one will call others impure. The Ba’al Shem Tov says something similar in a comment on a Mishnah in Nega’im (2:5): “A person can see all nega’im aside from his own nega’im.” The basic meaning is that a kohen may diagnose a nega for anyone but himself. The baalei mussar read this homiletically to mean that it is easy for a person to diagnose the faults of others but not his own faults. The Ba’al Shem Tov goes even further, suggesting that by placing a comma at a different spot, the Mishnah takes on a radically different meaning (place the comma after the word “chutz”): “All the nega’im that a person sees outside are of his own nega’im.” Every fault that one finds with another is actually one’s own fault. To clarify the point, the Ba’al Shem Tov

told the story of a town milkman who was suddenly summoned to court. He was a very honest man and was surprised that someone had filed a complaint against his integrity. The plaintiff was the baker in town. The baker was accustomed to acquiring all his dairy products from this milkman. The baker suspected that the milkman was cheating him, so he weighed the butter. Lo and behold, what was labeled as a pound of butter was in fact slightly less. On the day of the trial, the milkman arrived in court for the first time in his life. The judge recited the alleged crime of fraud by selling incorrect measurements of goods. The judge then asked the milkman whether he checks the weight of the goods he sells with a professional scale. The milkman replied that he does not own a professional scale. The judge responded in disbelief: “How can you just estimate the weight of products! You just decide on your own? That’s cheating!” The milkman responded that he does not

own a professional scale but has another way of determining the accuracy of the weight of his products. “Every morning,” the milkman said, “I buy a pound of bread from the baker. I put the bread on one side of a scale and the butter on the other side. When it’s balanced, I know that’s a pound of butter.” The judge the turned to the baker, now red in the face and says. “One who condemns another condemns with his own faults.” An important lesson that we learn from the metzorah is that before we begin to explore and disclose (“call out”) the faults of others, let us look deep inside ourselves and see how we can improve. Metzora

Sidra Summary the guilt offering and oil on the metzora’s right ear, right thumb and big toe of the right foot.

“For the person being purified there shall be taken two live, pure birds, cedar wood, crimson thread and hyssop” (Vayikra 14:4)

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 14:21-32

A metzora who could not afford three animal offerings could instead bring one animal offering, one meal offering and two birds.

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – VAYIKRA 14:1-14:12 The Torah details the process through which a metzora – someone afflicted with the skin disease tzara’at – purified him/herself after the period of isolation and the healing of the affliction. This involved a Kohen taking two birds, cedar wood, a crimson thread and hyssop. The Kohen would slaughter one of the birds and –using the wood, thread and hyssop together in a bundle – sprinkle its blood seven times on the metzora.

Point to Consider: What was the significance of the metzorah having to shave his head, beard and eyebrows? (14:9)

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 14:13-20

The metzora would also bring three animal offerings and three meal offerings. The Kohen would then put blood from

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 14:33-53

Tzara’at also affected houses. The house owner would report the suspicious signs to a Kohen. The house would be evacuated before the Kohen’s arrival. If the Kohen saw a deep green or deep red ‘affliction’, he would order the house to be quarantined for a week. He would then re-inspect the house. If the affliction had spread, the infected stones would be removed and replaced. If the affliction nevertheless returned, the house would be demolished. However, if replacing the stones solved the problem, the Kohen would declare the house tahor (ritually pure).

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 14:54-15:15

The Torah lists specific circumstances that would cause a man to be considered tameh (ritually impure) and details the purification procedure.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 15:16-28

A similar set of laws is listed for a woman, as well as the laws of niddah (menstruation), which form the basis of the intimate laws of marital life.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 15:28-33

The Torah emphasises the importance of adhering to the laws of tumah and taharah, in particular warning about the

severe punishment for entering the Mishkan (Tabernacle) in a state of impurity.

HAFTARAH

The special haftarah for Shabbat Hagadol is from the last chapter of the Prophets. G-d chastises Israel for neglecting to keep His laws. Eliyahu (Elijah) can come at any time, heralding a radical improvement in the nation’s fortunes.

Shabbat Hagadol: Guardians of the Galaxy BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN

As the seder winds down the tension builds. Who has stolen the afikoman, and what price will it take to release this crucial hostage, so that the seder can continue? Nervous negotiations unfold at seder tables across the Jewish world, in an attempt to liberate the afikoman “prisoners”. After all, Pesach is the night of liberty. Well before the matzo was swiped and concealed by eager children, the afikoman was “covered”. Separated from a whole matzo hours earlier, the afikoman piece was placed in a bag or under a napkin. As this matzo piece was originally hidden it is nicknamed “tzafun” or the “hidden” food. Additionally, the very term “afikoman” is based upon the process of “unveiling” covered matzo (“afik” literally means to take out). Evidently, concealing or hiding afikoman matzo is essential to the experience.

UNWRAPPING THE FUTURE

By concealing the afikoman, we revisit a “monument” of hidden food from our national past. The night we swiftly departed Egypt, we were unsure about our itinerary and about the availability of food in a terrifying desert. Hurriedly, we wrapped whatever food we could get our hands on. In the chaos of the departure, we grabbed half-baked breads from our ovens. We collected leftover matzo and marror from that first fateful seder night in Egypt. Unsure of the future, we snatched whatever scraps and parcels we could. The “wrapping material” for these half-eaten scraps of food was even more odd. We wrapped these morsels in elegant clothing which had been gifted to us by the Egyptians. Hours earlier, our former persecutors, who now admired us, showered us with gold, silver, and fine linens. However, everything was moving too quickly, and we didn’t know what to make of this clothing, or even how to wear them. Ancient slaves did not dress in finely tailored clothing or in silk dresses. In many ancient societies, as a sign of humiliation, slaves were entirely forbidden from wearing any clothing. We left in such a mad dash that we didn’t even have the time to “try on” our freshly laundered silk clothing. We stuffed whatever food we could gather into these linens and silks, and sprinted out of Egypt. As slaves who had been traumatized by hunger and starvation, we were highly insecure about this food. We didn’t dare store this linen-wrapped food in our carts or upon our animals. Perhaps they would be stolen. Anxious and uncertain, we

placed these elegantly wrapped leftovers upon our shoulders, where we could personally guard them. Leftover food, wrapped in newly acquired silks placed upon frightened shoulders, epitomizes how uncertain we were about our future. Little did we know, that a few weeks later we would be treated to abundant and limitless heavenly food. We had no clue. Yet we left and took a leap into the great unknown. We followed our heart and our loyalties and ran from Egypt into a desert of faith. Into the great wide open. Wrapping the afikoman recalls that national leap of faith. Faith sometime demands jumping into the unknown. We cling tightly to our past because it is certain and familiar, while the future is always frightening. Fear is always the price for change. Unwrapping the afikoman at the end of each seder summons us to unwrap the future and take important leaps of faith, even at the cost of uncertainty. If they did, we can. If they could walk bravely upon hot desert sands, we can make the frightening but valuable changes in our lives. Unwrap the afikoman and unpack the future.

BECOMING GUARDIANS

There is an additional purpose to covering the afikoman matzo. Eating afikoman substitutes for our “lost” korban Pesach. In the mikdash era, the seder concluded with a small taste of grilled korban Pesach meat. Unable to offer this korban, we simulate that meat with our final afikoman matzo. Korban Pesach meat must be vigilantly guarded. If the meat goes unattended – even for a few minutes- it becomes invalid. We symbolically conceal the afikoman matzo to reproduce the original guarding of the korban Pesach meat. Afikoman matzo cannot just be set aside for later consumption, but it like the Pesach meat, must be protected and guarded by a handkerchief or within a bag. Afikoman matzo is guarded in a bag, but all matzo is essentially, “guarded bread”. All matzo is actively guarded against becoming chametz. The higher grade of matzo shmurah -necessary on the night of the seder- is guarded against contact with water even before the baking process commences. All food on this night is guardedfrom Pesach meat, to afikoman substitutes, to the general matzo we consume. Guarding food on this night isn’t just a practical halachik measure to prevent bread from leavening, or meat from becoming invalid. We guard food this night because the overall night is one of guardianship. The night of the seder is referred to as “leil shimurim”, or the night of watching.

We guard food this night because the overall night is one of guardianship. The night of the seder is referred to as “leil shimurim”, or the night of watching. On leil shimurim Hashem watched us and, after centuries of fear and slavery, we finally, felt protected. On leil shimurim, the night of watching, Hashem became OUR guardian. However, on this night of leil shimurim WE also became guardians. Released from slavery we were tasked with the historical mission of guarding humanity at large. We were appointed to prevent humanity from slipping into brutality and moral dysfunction. We were commanded to preserve Hashem’s name in a confused world which rejects Him. That night we started guarding humanity against its lesser self. Pesach is both zeman cheiruteinu, the holiday of liberty, but also, leil shimurim- a night during which which freed slaves became guardians of humanity. That night we were protected by Hashem so that we could protect others. Therefore, on the night of Pesach we guard everything- from our food, to our world, to our values. Over the past two thousand years our role as guardians must have strained the imaginations of our ancestors. We were pushed to the margins of society, and it was we who required protection. Sadly, that protection didn’t always materialize. During Pesach, which often coincided with

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Easter, Jews living in Christian lands often suffered hideous pogroms. Ironically, the night we were promised protection and were designated as guardians, we were often at our most vulnerable. The tables of history have now turned, and we are, once again, guardians. We have the great privilege to guard our homeland against hostile opposition and against vociferous denial of our privilege to the land of G-d. Sadly, over the past few weeks in Israel, this struggle has intensified, as we have faced a renewed wave of terror. In every generation they rise upon us. Lucky are we to live in a generation in which we can rise up and defined ourselves. We live in the era of shimurim and in the land of shimurim. Afikoman reminds us that we are guardians- of our matzo, of our land, of our world and of future. We guard everything.. silently but courageously. Metzora Word Seach

Last week we learnt abput tzara’at, a spiritual illness which usually comes from speaking lashon harah. When we do an aveirah we make our neshamot ill and impure. Tzara’at is Hashem’s way of showing us that by making it appear on our bodies. This week, our parsha begins by telling us how the metzora is purified by the kohen with a special “medicine” involving two birds, spring water in an earthen bowl, a piece of cedar wood, a scarlet thread and a bundle of hyssop. Your home could also have got tzara’at in the time of the mishkan and Beit Hamikdash,by having dark red or green patches on its walls. A kohen works out if the house can be purified, or whether it must be demolished.

“I

know,” replied Ima. “I found a Cheerio by the clothes airer!” “I am soooo excited for yum-matza competition,” said Hadass excitedly as she skipped into the kitchen after school. “What is the yum-matza competition?” Chaim asked. “It’s such a cool idea. You have to come up with the best recipe that uses matza. The catch is it has to be pieces of matza, not matza meal.” “Gosh, what an interesting idea,” said Ima. “I have some Pesach recipes you can look through if you would like.” “No,” said Hadassa firmly. “I want to do this all by myself.” Hadassa was so excited that immediately after supper she went upstars to start inventing her idea. What should it be? Rivki poked her head around the door. “What are you doing?” “Go away!” said Hadassa, “I’m too busy for you.” Now where was I, thought Hadassa. Probably I need to choose whether it will be a dessert, a main course or a snack first. I think a dessert would be best; everyone loves a dessert! Hadassa took out a notepad and started scribbling down all the delicious ideas she had in her head. What about cheesecake…with strawberries…or marshmallows with chocolate…there was so much to choose from. And of course, anything she

planned would have to be made as a test… and eaten! Yum!! Chaim sauntered into Hadassa’s room and peered over her shoulder. “How is it going?” he asked. “All the worse for you coming in, you’ve made me lose my train of thought,” snapped Hadassa grumpily. Ima was just pouring herself a nice cup of tea in the kitchen, when Chaim and Rivki came charging in. They both started babbling at once.

Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.

“Slow down,” said Ima, smiling. “Come and sit down, what’s the problem?” Chaim started complaining about Hadassa’s behaviour. Rivki then chipped in with her story of how Hadassa was being so mean. Ima listened, her smile slowly turning into a frown. “Chaim please go and get Hadassa and bring her downstairs” Ima sipped her tea and waited until Hadassa and Chaim were sat at the kitchen table with her and Rivki.

“Who knows what this week’s Parsha is?” asked Ima. “Metzora,” said Chaim. “And what is it about?” “How we shouldn’t speak lashon hora,” sighed Rivki. “But, it’s not fair,” said Chaim. “Hadassa said mean things to us.” “I think there are two points here. Firstly, Chaim and Rivki, it is not nice to say lashon hora about your sister. If you are upset about something she has done, then you should come to me privately and not say it in front of your other siblings.” Chaim nodded and said reluctantly, “I guess that makes sense.” Ima turned to Hadassa. “When we talk about speech, it is not just lashon hora we have to avoid, but also hurtful speech that upsets others.” Hadassa nodded sadly. Turning to Chaim and Rivki she said “I’m sorry I said not nice things to you, I just wanted to get on with the ideas for the competition, but I shouldn’t have snapped at you both.” “That’s ok,” said Rivki, getting up and going over to Hadassa to give her a hug. “I am sorry too because I said lashon hora about you.” “Me too,” said Chaim. “Let’s go and finish my project,” said Hadassa excitedly. “You can both help!” As they raced up the stairs, Ima smiled to herself as she finished her cup of tea in peace.
