CAA SLATE TIKTOK 27 AUGUST 2020/7 ELUL 5780/

BY DAVID SAFFER

Campaign Against Antisemitism has lambasted social media video

platform TikTok after a wave of users mocked the Holocaust by pretending to be survivors. Despicable videos show mostly teenage girls wearing a Star of David or striped clothing, others have makeup feigning bruising. There are also videos with a backdrop of Auschwitz. Some videos have seen thousands of views and likes. Images are on TikTok and other social media platforms. Astonishingly, some users claim videos are ‘educational’. One user reportedly said a ‘creative’ video informed people about the Holocaust and was not meant to be offensive. Another, who had relations in concentration camps and had met Auschwitz survivors, reportedly wanted to spread ‘awareness’ about a grandmother’s story. “These videos are TikTok’s latest anti-Semitic abomination,” said a CAA spokesperson. “The obsession among too many users of the platform with Holocaust mockery and Holocaust denial should be of grave concern to the company, but time and again

@TheJewishWeekly 156

TikTok shows even greater indifference than other social media networks to the hate spewed on its platform.” CAA added, “Tech companies have shown that they are incapable of regulating themselves, which is why we have called on the Government to bring forward an Online Harms bill immediately.” CAA has previously called out far-right videos and Holocaust-denial on TikTok regarding Holocaust mockery. The platform had reportedly removed videos promoting an anti-Semitic song. CAA has launched a petition calling for new legislation, the Online Harms Bill, for technology companies to remove racist incitement within set timeframes, a duty of care for social networks with personal liability for executives and tighter requirements to provide evidence to police under warrant. CAA will continue to make representations to the Government in this connection. Details: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/333146/

FATAL TERROR ATTACK IN PETACH TIKVAH

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to demolish the home of a Palestinian man who stabbed a rabbi to death in Petach Tikvah on Wednesday afternoon. The incident is believed to be an anti-Semitic attack as the victim, Rabbi Shai Ohayon of Petach Tikva, was ultra-orthodox. Netanyahu said a 46-yearold suspect, caught at the scene, will face the “most severe punishment”. Community members have expressed shock at the killing of the 39-year-old rabbi, who was married with four children. The assailant, married with six children, was from Nablus in the West Bank. He is not

believed to be a member of a Palestinian terror group. The attack is being investigated by Shin Bet Security services. Netanyahu sent condolences to the family in the name of “all Israeli citizens”. It is understood Rabbi Ohayon studied at a Kollel in Kfar Saba. Magen David Adom gave life saving treatment for multiple stab wounds but Rabbi Oyahon was pronounced dead at Rabin Medical Centre.

Deputies vote down IRW board step down motion at ‘Israel debate’ after anti-Semitic posts BY DAVID SAFFER

Deputies voted against a motion welcoming a ‘mutually agreed’ peace settlement between Israel and its neighbours at the Board of Deputies’ ‘Israel debate’ last Sunday. They did however back a two-state solution. The ‘peace settlement’ result though was the main talking point and mystified proposers of the motion, which went down 74-73 (17 abstained). “We remain perplexed at how a motion welcoming a mutually agreed peace deal between Israel and its neighbours could be rejected,” noted Anthony Bolchover (UJS) and Karen Solomon (Cheetham Hebrew Congregation) in a statement. “Instead, the Board felt it necessary to dictate the form of settlement the parties themselves should adopt, irrespective of the latter’s own wishes.” Bolchover and Solomon said it was an “outdated and misplaced sentiment”. They added, “The results show that whilst most voting deputies took a certain view, it was far from a consensus among deputies, let alone in the wider community, and we are confident that the Board will take this

BY LEAH WAXLER

division into account going forward. We will continue to caution the Board against interventions in Middle East politics. The Board is the representative body of the British Jewish community, not an Israel debating society.” Motion B read: “This Board of Deputies will welcome any mutually agreed peace settlement between Israel and its neighbours, and adopts no position on the form such a settlement should take.” Adrian Cohen and Ben Crowne proposed Motion A calling for the Board to back a “permanent, comprehensive solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state. The motion also called for promoting peace projects that unite communities and resist boycotts. Deputies voted 95-55 (15 abstained). President Marie van der Zyl said the Boards’ policy was to ‘promote peace projects”. The Board back a “comprehensive solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A motion to ensure the Board took a stand against Israeli annexation in the West Bank was withdrawn after Israel’s accord with the United Arab Emirates.

The board of UK’s largest Muslim charity, Islamic Relief Worldwide, has stepped down after news broke that a new trustee posted anti-Semitic posts on Facebook Astonishingly, his predecessor also made hate comments online. The Times reported the story about the board and posts that included an anti-Semitic cartoon and praise for leaders of Hamas. Campaign Against Antisemitism have been swift to react. CAA has written to the Charity Commission calling for a statutory investigation in light of the disturbing revelations. “The replacement of a trustee with a history of anti-Semitic comments with a new trustee who also has a history of anti-Semitic comments and the subsequent resignation of the entire board has shown that Islamic Relief Worldwide’s processes are defective,” noted a spokesperson. CAA added, “Given the size of the charity and the severity of the breach, we have written to the Charity Commission calling for a statutory investigation into how the charity has been operating and whether the racist views and negligence of several of its trustees have impacted its activities. The Commission must chart a new course for the organisation in order to rebuild the public’s trust in the charity’s work.” IRW reportedly said the trustee’s posts by Dr Almoutaz Tayara were “offensive and unacceptable”. “In no way do they reflect the views and core values of the organisation,” they noted. IRW explained that posts in 2014 and 2015 on a personal Facebook account of Tayara contravened its values.

Dr Almoutaz Tayara

Tayara accepted posts were “inappropriate and unacceptable”. He will play no further part in the governance of the organisation. Tayara is “deeply ashamed” of the comments and has apologised to Islamic Relief Germany for posts in 2017. IR Germany accepted the apology and has established a new Code of Conduct. IRW became aware of the posts last week. The board will not stand for re-election and will be replaced by a new board. A new IRW board was being elected by a new International General Assembly this week. IRW is conducting a review of screening processes and social media policies. It is taking advice from the Charity Commission. The statement concluded, “We work to uphold the highest humanitarian standards of neutrality, impartiality and independence, assisting people of all faiths and none, without discrimination by race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. “We reject and condemn terrorism and believe that all forms of discrimination, including anti-Semitism, are unacceptable. These values are fundamental to our organisation, our donors and the people we serve.”

Shuls can use public spaces

Tel Aviv and Jaffa synagogues can use public spaces for prayers during the High Holidays. All services during Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret must be held with regard to public health regulations. Worshipers must wear face masks, maintain social distance and have temperature checks. “The right to prayer and religious gatherings is fundamental and everything will be done in order to permit tens of thousands of worshipers to carry out the holiday commandments, even under the health restrictions,” Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said in a statement. The Health Ministry has considered a nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19 cases.

Chasidic pilgrims’ claims denied

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Benny Gantz

Bibi & Benny unite on state budget BY LEAH WAXLER

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Benny Gantz have agreed to delay a state budget for three months. The political breakthrough averts a snap election. The Knesset backed the delay two hours before Monday’s midnight deadline after acrimonious discussions between the main parties. Netanyahu called on Likud MKs to back the bill. Gantz, in a televised statement shortly after, reportedly said that social tensions in the country may deteriorate with elections. He added, “Whoever threatens elections, does not threaten me but the Israeli public. Therefore, I will not let anyone threaten the citizens of Israel.” A stalemate persisted over various issues including senior public sector appointments, particularly Attorney General and State Attorney. Netanyahu, who is in the midst of a corruption trial, had pushed to make the appointments but finally relented in a weekend address, vowing not to intervene in these appointments.

Netanyahu backed a compromise bill at his weekly press conference on Sunday. Israel’s leader called for “unity” among coalition members to benefit the nation. “Now is the time for unity. Not for elections,” he said. Netanyahu has many detractors. Opposition leader Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) lambasted the decision, noting a possibility of elections after the extension. “This is your compromise?” Lapid questioned. “To continue Netanyahu’s total failure? While schools remain without funding, business owners without assistance and rampant unemployment?” Thousands have protested weekly outside Netanyahu’s official residence over his actions. Netanyahu and Gantz reached a unity agreement last April to fight the coronavirus pandemic after three elections failed to prove conclusive. Gantz is due to succeed Netanyahu in November 2021. But the budget has been a major stumbling block. Netanyahu favours a one-year budget, Gantz wants two years as agreed in the coalition deal. Recent polls indicate Netanyahu would win but he has decided to take a different route.

Uman

BY SIMCHA ABIR

Ukraine is set to limit the number of Chasidic Jews entering the country for Rosh Hashonah next month. It had been reported that President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office had called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to restrict the Chasidic pilgrimage to Uman. But Netanyahu swiftly denied the comments attributed to a statement on Tuesday. Israel’s Head of Public Health Dr. Sharon Alroy has warned of a serious danger of a spike in coronavirus cases in Uman. Erev Rosh Hashanah is September 18. Traditionally 30,000 pilgrims, mostly from Israel, honour Rabbi Nachman, founder of the Bratslav Chasidic movement, at his resting place during the High Holiday. “At the request of the Prime Minister of Israel, a decision was made to significantly restrict the Chasidic pilgrimage to Uman,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office confirmed in a statement. No figure has been released but it has been reported 1500 orthodox Jews are currently in the historic city. The Ukrainian and Israeli governments have issued a joint statement calling on worshippers to cancel trips. And the Mayor of Uman, Oleksandr Tsebriy last week said measures had been considered including roadblocks to stop “outsiders” entering the city. Most of Uman’s population are against foreign nationals from “red” countries visiting the city. Israel is on that restricted list. Indeed, Israelis travelling to Ukraine must quarantine for 14 days on arrival. “It is understandable why Chasidic Jews need and want to travel, we are aware of it, but this poses as a serious threat to a serious increase in virus infections and we request

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

of them to not take part in it this year,” Tsebriy reportedly said. Israel’s Health Ministry, Foreign Ministry and National Security Council have held meetings regarding Uman. A joint statement confirmed that the global epidemiological situation meant that Rosh Hashanah could not be marked by “usual customs” in accordance with recommendations from the Ukrainian and Israeli health ministries. Regarding pilgrims, the bodies have emphasised social distancing regulations must be strictly enforced. But they have also looked ahead to celebrating festivals “together and without any restrictions” next year. Last month, the Ukrainian government stated Israelis would not be allowed to enter Ukraine for the high holidays. But earlier this month, Ukrainian Chief Rabbi Rav Yaakov Dov Bleich announced the government may allow up to 8,000 visitors. Israel’s Health Ministry condoned the comments. Whilst acknowledging potentially dangerous flights, Israel’s government is considering different risks for countries. “Our professional role is to present our positions and the risks on certain issues,” Alory noted. “Of course, the government has the right to make a decision contradictory to our recommendations and consider other risks,” she added. Alroy is against a nationwide lockdown in Israel during the High Holidays but accepted there might be measures for ‘high risk’ citizens such as over 65s. “We could possibly ask people with pre-existing conditions and those over 65 to stay at home,” she said. “Currently we are not saying this, we are following the data closely and will make the appropriate public directives.”

WJC slam Austrian antiSemitic attack World Jewish Congress has condoned an anti-Semitic attack on the president of the Austria Jewish community of Graz last Shabbat. WJC backed Austrian authorities lambasting the incident and a call for tighter security at Jewish institutions in Austria. An unknown attacker attacked Elie Rosen at Graz synagogue who escaped to a car unhurt. WJC Ronald S. Lauder president said the organisation stood by Rosen, Graz and larger Austrian Jewish communities following the anti-Semitic hate crime. “Such assault on Jews is becoming far too commonplace, especially in Europe but also elsewhere, including in the United States and Canada,” he noted. “I cannot condemn the perpetrator strongly enough, and we must acknowledge the deeper tragedy of global anti-Semitism, xenophobia and bigotry that threatens the fibre of societies worldwide.” Lauded added, “I am deeply appreciative of Austrian Chancellor Kurtz’s prompt and unequivocal denunciation of the attack on Elie Rosen, and his assurance that his government is committed to safeguarding the security of the Austrian Jewish community.” Kurz was shocked by the attack. A Syrian man has since been arrested in connection with the attack.

Israel calls on Raab to change Iran stance BY ADAM MOSES

Israel’s leaders have called on Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to reconsider UK’s policy on Iran during a Middle East visit this week. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi expressed disappointment about the UK’s opposition to the United States extending an arms embargo and broader measures on Iran. Raab’s visit to Jerusalem was to reiterate the UK’s two-state solution and annexation stance before meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. Netanyahu though voiced concern about Iran. “Look at Iran’s aggressive behaviour today without a nuclear weapon,” Netanyahu reportedly told Raab. “Imagine what kind of a threat it would be to the whole world if it was in position of one.” Ashkenazi noted Tehran’s support for terrorist groups in the region as proof that Iran was undermining “stability of the Middle East”. “E3 countries must understand that regional stability and halting Iran’s arms shipments is a matter of global interest,” Ashkenazi reportedly said. “I call on all countries to join the U.S. in restoring the

sanctions mechanism.” Netanyahu praised the UK’s position on Hezbollah. Raab welcomed bilateral ties between the two countries, the recent Israel-UAE accord and annexation suspension in the West Bank. “It is a positive and important step,” Raab reportedly said. Raab noted on Twitter, “I reiterated UK support for dialogue with Palestinians to achieve lasting peace through a viable 2-state solution.” Prior to the visit on Monday, Raab said in a statement, “The UK remains committed to Israel’s security and stability, and the recent normalisation of relations between Israel and the UAE was an important moment for the region. “Israel’s suspension of annexation is an essential step towards a more peaceful Middle East. It is important to build on this new dynamic, and ultimately only the government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority can negotiate the two-state solution required to secure lasting peace.” Raab’s visit came as Israel Defence Forces resumed strikes against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. The IDF’s 12th attack in Gaza in 13 days on Monday followed a continued

bombardment of incendiary devices at border communities by the terror group. An IDF spokesman noted Hamas military posts and underground infrastructure had been targeted. “The attack was carried out in response to the launch of explosive and incendiary balloons from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory during the day,” read a statement. “The IDF conducts an ongoing situation assessment and acts firmly and decisively against any attempt at terrorist activity against the citizens of the State of Israel and the violation of its sovereignty.” There had been a 24-hour cessation at the border after days of hostility when Egyptian mediators attempted to broker a truce. Dozens of explosive balloons caused fires near the border with the Gaza Strip though damage is minor and no injuries have been reported. Israel’s National Fire and Rescue Services reported 36 fires on Monday after 28 on Sunday. Israel closed the Erez Crossing into the Gaza Strip following closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing apart from humanitarian needs. The Hamas leadership has reportedly gone into hiding after warnings of targeted killings by Israel.

CAA publishes landmark anti-Semitism report BY ADAM MOSES

Campaign Against Antisemitism has published a landmark report detailing the adoption of the International Definition of Anti-Semitism by UK local authorities. The review illustrates success at grassroots level across the country. To date, 119 of 422 authorities have adopted the full definition in full. CAA has sent a copy to Secretary of State Robert Jenrick as a resource for his department. Jenrick has backed a campaign for widespread adoption by authorities and warned those refusing may lose public funding. Jenrick has declared that “there is no place for antisemitic abuse”. The report offers a full picture of the fight against anti-Semitism at local level, exposing which local authorities take the issue seriously. Local activists and voters are now able to make more “informed choices” through the document. The report cites authorities that have not adopted the full international definition in line with government policy. With over 300 authorities not signing up CAA’s report shows that there is still “a long way to go” according to the lobbyists. “While the number of local authorities

IDF shut quarantine hotels as Covid-19 cases dip BY DAVID SAFFER

Israel Defence Forces’ Home Front Command has shut a number of quarantine hotels with coronavirus cases gradually reducing. The news is being cautiously welcomed. A total of 28 hotels have been used as emergency facilities. Up to 10 centres could be closed by next week. Facilities include centres in Acre, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. A hotel can be operational within 48 hours if cases suddenly spike. Health Ministry data shows 21,914 people are infected in Israel, 411 people are in a serious condition, 116 are on ventilators. There have been 839 fatalities. Whilst coronavirus infection rates in Israel are among the highest globally, morbidity in the Arab sector is a major concern. “The heads of the Arab local authorities see it, (they) feel very, very uncomfortable because this thing creates circles of contagion,” Coronavirus Czar Prof. Ronni Gamzu reportedly said. “We are suddenly seeing an increase in Haifa. I want to make sure that this is not a situation we cannot control. I urge members of the Arab community and its leaders to act. This is a disaster.” Regarding the ultra-Orthodox sector, which is again rising, Gamzu is against locking down areas. He noted, “Yeshiva students returned in capsules, which is a better plan than them being at home.” Gamzu called on local authorities to bring in measures to counter the deadly disease. “This is the only way,” he commented. “Everyone is talking about closure, but my method is not closure, it is to build management infrastructure, to manage it within the local authorities. There is no other way. We have no way of lowering sudden morbidity.” Meantime, the Health Ministry is recruiting paramedics to boost hospital staff for an anticipated hike in winter flu cases. They could join military medics to assist with flu vaccinations at Israel’s HMOs. Most paramedics are employed by the Magen David Adom. During the first wave of coronavirus infections, the Ministry of Health backed a similar initiative, recruiting 170 paramedics to emergency rooms and coronary wards. “There is no reason why paramedics should not take part in the national coronavirus campaign,” David Yelinek, Association of Paramedics chairman, reportedly said. With the High Holidays looming, Israel’s Information and Knowledge Centre, which is attached to the Health Ministry, has detailed recommendations. A report stated ‘multi-participant’ events were prone to widespread infections and increased morbidity.

A total of 28 hotels have been used as emergency facilities. Up to 10 centres could be closed by next week. Facilities include centres in Acre, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. “Traditions that come with the Jewish high holidays, among them large family and public gatherings, prayer and religious services are a potential catalyst for mass infection,” the report noted. In related news, the pandemic has hit the economy but it’s unclear how many people are unemployed. The Israeli Employment Service has reported 851,000 unemployed with 537,000

taking unpaid leave but officials estimate 100,000-150,000 Israelis back at work have not updated records. The National Insurance Institute reports 580,000 Israelis are receiving unemployment benefits while the Central Bureau of Statistics reported 513,000 had lost jobs, but these figures include furloughed workers. Israel’s unemployment rate was reported to be 21% in July, prior to the pandemic it was 5%.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

A Finance Ministry study published this month stated Israel would take up to five years to reach pre-pandemic employment levels. There has been some recovery in high tech but retail and hospitality sectors have been particularly hit due to the shutdown of the economy. Meantime, Israel’s coronavirus ‘traffic light’ model devised by Gamzu was due to be voted on this week and will be operational, if approved, on September 1. Gamzu’s plan treats outbreaks on a local level and transfers treatment to local authorities. Restrictions will be adjusted according to infection rates in a community. The plan divides Israel into 250 local authorities. A score based on handling of pandemic will be assessed biweekly. Restrictions will be adjusted. The score includes three factors, new patients, percentage of positive coronavirus test results and changes in the epidemic within the community. “The most important measure is the rate of positive tests, in order to avoid a situation where people are not getting tested enough and produce latent illness,” Gamzu reportedly said. “Each Mayor who wants to improve their city’s rating on the traffic light scale will have to make sure its residents are getting tested even in cases of mild symptoms.” Activities in synagogues, restaurants, mikvehs, hotels, markets, cafes and swimming pools are among venues noted in a city’s rating. Education, public transportation, workplaces and cultural events aren’t affected. “Close contact with the IDF Home Front Command will enable quick epidemiological investigations and the transfer of patients to hotels,” Gamzu reportedly explained. “In the event of an outbreak, the Mayor will set up drive-in coronavirus testing stations and the tests will be sent to Home Front Command laboratories. This way, we will be able to crack down quickly on new virus hotspots.” Gamzu called on citizens to report definace of health guidelines. “As soon as you see an unlawful gathering going on next to you, pick up the phone and report this to the municipal hotline,” Gamzu said. “Whoever condones such behaviour and does not warn of it will be complicit for any harm caused to their neighbourhood.” Gamzu added that an app will alert users after crossing municipal boundaries. Half of Israel’s authorities have low coronavirus infection rates, 23 authorities have high infection rates, the most are ultra-Orthodox and Arab. Ministers rejected Gamzu’s plan last week. Religious parties claimed the plan targeted synagogues.

IDF to keep Middle East “military edge” BY ADAM MOSES

Israel will not lose its “military edge” in the Middle East under a U.S. arms deals with the United Arab Emirates. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo assured Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the situation in Jerusalem on Monday. “The United States has a legal requirement with respect to qualitative military edge. We will continue to honour that,” Pompeo reportedly said on his arrival. Pompeo was in Jerusalem at the start of a whistle stop tour that also took in Sudan, Bahrain and the UAE to rekindle Israeli-Arab peace talks and garner support against Iran. “I am hopeful that we will see other Arab nations join in this,” Pompeo explained. “The opportunity for them to work alongside, to recognise the State of Israel and to work alongside them will not only increase Middle East stability, but it will improve the lives for the people of their own countries as well.” Following the meeting Netanyahu thanked Pompeo for standing up to Iran’s aggression and quest for nuclear weapons. As for the Israeli-UAE peace agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump, Netanyahu said it was a boon to peace and regional stability. “It heralds a new era where we could have other nations join,” he noted. Netanyahu added, “This is the alliance of the moderates against the radicals. Against those who use violence and aggression to further their aims. Against those who believe that we can offer a better future for our people through cooperation. It spells a change in the Middle East.” Netanyahu pointed out the deal did not include Israel’s acceptance of any arms deal and that the US would ensure Israel’s “qualitative edge”. Prior to the meeting, Netanyahu said expanding the “circle of peace” was on the agenda. Netanyahu added that in the not-toodistant future there would be peace with other countries. Intelligence Minster Eli Cohen backed Netanyahu’s judgement on Israel radio’s Chadash al Haboker on Monday. “By the end of the year there will be agreements with two other countries,” he reportedly told listeners. “This accord is a groundbreaker,” he added in an Army Radio interview. “The Palestinian taboo, which put a veto on other countries, was broken. I estimate that in the coming year we will see agreements with other countries, including

Bahrain, Oman, Sudan and Morocco.” Netanyahu said the UAE peace agreement had opened a “new era of peace” in the Middle East at his weekly press conference in Jerusalem on Sunday. “Soon we will all be able to fly to Abu Dhabi and Dubai and they will fly here,” he explained. “The fruits of peace are many and this peace will expand to include other countries.” Regarding the UAE accord, Netanyahu added that peace with the UAE would help tourism, technology, the coronavirus war, medicine, energy, water, agriculture and infrastructures. “They are interested in investing in the State of Israel and will be here with giant investments,” he added. “This is important because it creates jobs. It creates employment. It creates livelihoods. All of this is important always but it is much more important in the coronavirus era.” Following the Israel-UAE accord, there was confusion whether Israel was in peace talks with Sudan after news of an impending deal between the nations was quickly denied by Sudan’s Foreign Ministry. However, there has been Israel-UAE announcements on health issues including the ongoing battle against COVID-19 and joint business ventures. Peace gives an excellent opportunity for close relations said Minister of Health Yuli Edelstein who added that the Emirati Health Minister was a true partner of Israel. President Reuven Rivlin has invited Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Jerusalem as an “honoured guest”. “I am hopeful that the agreement between our countries will help build and strengthen the trust between us and the peoples of the region, bring economic benefit and regional stability,” Rivlin tweeted. The UAE treaty follows on from Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994. White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and Middle East envoy Avi Berkowitz are expected to travel to Israel and UAE next month. Moroccan Prime Minister Saad Dine El Otmani, meantime, has denied a deal with Israel is forthcoming. “We refuse any normalisation with the Zionist entity because this emboldens it to go further in breaching the rights of the Palestinian people,” El Otmani reportedly said this week. Iran, meanwhile, was high on the agenda of Pompeo’s talks with Netanyahu. Both leaders have condoned a lack of international backing for U.S. calls over

“The opportunity for them to work alongside, to recognise the State of Israel and to work alongside them will not only increase Middle East stability, but it will improve the lives for the people of their own countries as well.” United Nations sanctions to be reintroduced against Iran over the 2015 nuclear deal. “We are determined to use every tool that we have to ensure they can’t get access to high-end weapon systems,” Pompeo reportedly said. “The rest of the world should join us.” Pompeo also met Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi in Jerusalem. In related news, prior to Pompeo’s visit, Netanyahu’s office responded to rumours about the US selling F-35 fighter jets with advanced drones to the Gulf state. “From the outset, the Prime Minister opposed the sale of F-35s and other

advanced weapons to any countries in the Middle East, including Arab countries making peace with the State of Israel,” noted a statement. “The Prime Minister has repeatedly expressed this position to the US administration and that has not changed.” Defence Minister Benny Ganz reportedly noted, “It is important to understand that Israel’s resilience depends on two efforts, the pursuit of peace and an uncompromising commitment to security supremacy in every part of the Middle East. “I intend to support this important effort along with other government ministries, and to do so while guaranteeing Israel’s security considerations and interests.”

Midnight Selichot film première Faced with the strictures of social distancing, restricted public gatherings and bans on large choirs singing together, the Shabbaton Choir is delighted to present an alternative way to experience the first night of Selichot in the run-up to the High Holydays. The première of a film of last year’s Midnight Selichot service, held at the magnificent 120-year old Hampstead Synagogue, will be presented on Motza’ei Shabbat (Saturday evening), 12 September at 9.30pm, live on the United Synagogue’s TV channel. All are welcome to tune in. The service features an interview and pre-Selichot address by Rabbi Lord Sacks followed by the stirring musical renditions of the Shabbaton Choir, under the baton of Stephen Levey, who led the choir as musical director for the past 30 years and has recently been appointed Conductor Laureate. His successor as musical director is now Benjamin Fingerhut. To quote Rabbi Lord Sacks from the film, “Words are the language of the mind. Music is the language of the soul.” The service is led by Rabbi Lionel Rosenfeld (Western Marble Arch Synagogue) and Chazan Jonny Turgel (Stanmore & Canons Park United Synagogue), along with boy soloist Rafi Posner and one of his predecessors, Eli Baigel. This film was made by Pamela Wagman (producer) and Shlomi Albo (director), who were inspired by the Shabbaton Choir when they filmed them visiting the Aleh Negev centre in Israel, entertaining and

singing with the residents. “Who would have known that this film would become so much more important this year, when we cannot present our usual Midnight Selichot service, but we can at least experience the magical atmosphere which this annual event produces – 1000 people roused by the words of Rabbi Lord Sacks, stirred by the melodies of the Chazanim and the Shabbaton Choir, and charmed by the boy soloists,” commented Russell Kett, chairman of the Shabbaton Choir. “We are most grateful that Pamela and Shlomi had the foresight to film the service in full and for this to be a lasting record of this wonderful event. It showcases the British Jewish community convening for the only major synagogue service able to be recorded,” he added. “We hope the film of this curtain-raiser to the High Holydays will inspire viewers in this, most unusual period, but also provide a lasting example of one of the most uplifting services in the Jewish calendar,” Kett concluded. Michael Goldstein, President of the United Synagogue, said: ““Midnight choral selichot are a treasured part of our tradition and a personal highlight of my Jewish year. Given the challenges posed by coronavirus when many of our members are unable attend a selichot service, we are delighted to be partnering with the Shabbaton Choir to bring Midnight Choral Selichot to them on TheUS.tv.” To attend the Film Première please click on www.theus.tv/selichot.

CONSIDERING ALIYAH?

A delicious looking cocktail

Youth Aliyah Child Rescue cocktail masterclass raises over £1,000 Youth Aliyah Child Rescue supporters (and wannabe mixologists) gathered together via Zoom on Thursday 6th August to mix, shake and drink cocktails. Steve the bartender taught the crowd – assembled in their own gardens and kitchens – how to make different versions of a mojito, a Tom Collins and other cocktails. As well as drinking their way through the syllabus on the night, the participants are now ready to host fabulous socially distanced cocktail evenings of their own all summer long! Mint

sprigs, strawberry garnishes and chilled glasses were on display at the end and these master students can now give London’s top bars (and maybe even Tom Cruise) a run for their money. Every pound raised as part of the cocktail masterclass was generously matched by the Cohen Family Foundation and an anonymous donor. The event raised over £1,000 to help vulnerable and at risk children in Israel, many of whom do not have a stable family to support them through the pandemic.

Young Jewish Care volunteers win Jack Petchey Awards Daniel Sacks and Jamie Shone have been announced as weekly winners of the Jack Petchey Awards for going the extra mile during the current pandemic, in recognition of all the volunteering work they have done at Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre and for other parts of Jewish Care. The young people were nominated for their dedication giving their time to help distribute Meals on Wheels to older members of the community since lockdown began during the current pandemic. The Jack Petchey Foundation have created the Community Awards programme to give the young people helping those less fortunate than themselves in this time a well-deserved thank you. Melodie Driscoll, who coordinates Meals on Wheels from Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre, says, “We are very pleased that Jamie and Daniel have won the awards. We have distributed over 10,000 meals to Redbridge JCC clients since lockdown commenced and it’s been fantastic to see the dedication of the young people we nominated who have been so helpful in packing or delivering meals since lockdown. The whole team have worked incredibly hard to make this possible and all of our volunteers are invaluable in ensuring that we can continue to support the

most vulnerable in our community.” Jamie Shone, 18, from Clayhall, was a pupil at Kantor King Solomon High School and will continue to volunteer throughout the summer before going on his gap year in Israel in September, where he will represent Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre. Jamie has grown up with the organisation, having been a participant at the Centre’s holiday schemes since the age of 5 before becoming a youth leader himself through the organisation’s youth leadership programme, MIKE, an acronym which stands for Motivation, Inspiration, Knowledge and Education. As well as helping with Meals on Wheels preparation and deliveries Jamie has also been volunteering through lockdown to run regular online sessions for those who would usually attend the MIKE Balagan Club nights. Speaking about the Jack Petchey Foundation Award, Jamie says, “In the middle of March I was told that my A levels were to be cancelled and my school was to close. At this point I didn’t know what I was going to do until September. I saw Jewish Care’s urgent call for volunteers and knew that I’d love to do something to help the community in this tough time. “I started off helping to produce and

deliver the meals for the Meals on Wheels and now also help on reception. Last week I received an email from the Jack Petchey Foundation saying I had won a Community Award for all the volunteering I’d been doing. I was both shocked and proud to have been chosen and recognised for this. “Delivering the meals has been an incredible experience seeing how happy the clients are to see their food arrive with a smile. It has been so rewarding to know that I am making a difference to someone’s day. When I return from my Gap year I’d like to come back and do some work within the Jewish community.” Daniel Sacks, who is 18 and a pupil at JCoSS, lives in Barkingside. He is planning to go to Leeds to study Economics and

Finance and will also carry on helping out with Meals on Wheels over the summer. He said, “When lockdown happened and A level exams were cancelled, I needed something to do so I started to help out three days a week with Jewish Care’s Meals on Wheels. I was checking what people had ordered, packaging it up and getting it ready for deliveries. “I always enjoy it – it’s a meaningful thing to do and it’s a nice environment to be in at Redbridge Jewish Community Centre, everyone is great there. I’ve been volunteering with young people locally since I was 11 so it seemed like a natural thing to do. I was really pleased to open an email from the Jack Petchey Foundation to let me know I’d received this award.”

Restoring calm and wellbeing into Jewish lives At the start of the Covid crisis in March, Jewish Action for Mental Health (JAMH) and Neshomo started to work together offering befriending, mentoring, counselling and therapy to those whose mental health was being affected by the pandemic. “Our support has helped to restore a sense of calm and wellbeing into the lives of many people who have been feeling anxious and stressed during this time of uncertainty,” said Jonny Wineberg, trustee of JAMH. “Over 80 people have received support so far and this looks set to increase over the coming weeks and months.” Neshomo Chairman, Dr David Marshall, explains, “Lockdown has caused feelings of severe isolation for many with increased loneliness, stress and anxiety. Both our organisations have been able to tackle this by offering social prescribing sessions over the telephone and via Zoom covering topics such as art, mindfulness and gardening. A sense of peer linkage has developed amongst some of our clients, particularly those who participated in the group sessions.” According to Dr Sandi Mann, Founder and Clinical Lead of JAMH, “Neshomo and JAMH have worked together to provide advice, support and referral to

relevant help. Support available through both organisations has been advertised widely in the Jewish press and on social media and JAMH has also launched an enhanced helpline.” Neshomo has recruited more befriending volunteers from across the Jewish community, training them to offer support to clients; whilst JAMH has developed a database of over 30 therapists who have delivered free counselling or therapy sessions over Zoom. Dr Marshall said, “Our professionals have continued to be supported during this very difficult time with monthly peer-led group supervision sessions and our community professionals’ monthly meetings.” One of our service users said, “JAMH has put a safety net under our family. The counselling sessions have been rejuvenating and have given me space to talk without feeling guilty. I have no idea who you all are, how you find the time, koyach and money to run this organisation, but know that you are truly making a difference and that has long lasting ripple effects.” To get in touch with JAMH, please contact our helpline 07510 204 844; email: hello@ jamh.org.uk or visit www.jamh.org.uk.

Kisharon has been working with Shuls across the NW London community to ensure their members who may not be able to attend services over the Yomim Noraim can receive gift packs including honey, wine and honey dippers from their respective communities. Students, families and teachers worked hard to package up the Rosh Hashanah sets at Kisharon’s Childs Hill Library. Volunteers included people from FZY, Hasmoneon school, Wentworth College, Immanuel College, Birmingham and Leeds JSOCs as well as teachers from Etz Chaim school. Over 4,000 jars of honey were individually wrapped together with other Kisharon Rosh Hashanah gift sets. Over 7,000 in total were packed into 900 boxes to be sent out. Given strict covid safety requirements, premises closures, size requirement for social

distancing and lots of logistical planning a huge effort by all involved will be greatly appreciated by members of the community. Sarah Sharlott, Head of Community Engagement & Social Enterprise says, “The scale of this volunteer effort has been truly amazing. The dedication enthusiasm and good humour of all the volunteers has made the experience unforgettable”. Volunteer and university student Maddy comments, “I started helping Kisharon pack with my mum and sister but I could see more hands were needed so called on some friends who were delighted to help. We had a really productive day and instead of catching up over a coffee or lunch.” The Rosh Hashanah range is available from: https://equal.kisharon.org.uk/

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON The prolonged closure of schools has been amongst the hugest of concerns not just for the Cabinet, but for a whole population. Of course opinions have been divided with the unions shouting safety! safety! safety, at all costs!, and the mandarins quite wisely chanting education! education! education, at all costs! The truth is, of course, there is no such thing as ‘anything… at all costs.’ That's just a method of trying to terrorise a population. Some of our country's largest teaching unions have privately welcomed Gavin Williamson keeping his post, describing him as “their useful Jacqueline Curzon idiot.” I think he’s truly used up his nine lives, and what he’s really PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY waiting for is his predicted P45. If schools don’t fulfill the promise of returning to business next week, Gavin should - like a good public servant - pack his trunk and head back to the circus. The furore over the exam debacle has doubtless eroded all public confidence, and we need Boris Johnson to ultimately steer us through these difficult waters. Otherwise, the Cabinet will more closely resemble the cast of Yes, Minister. The Chief Medical Officers have released younger children have been floundering in the absence of routine, and the company a 21 point statement, suggesting risks to children can be “contained” and “extensive of their friends, and are - despite displays evidence” showing there’s an exceptionally of pre-teen bravado - desperate to get back small risk of primary and secondary school to school. Our Mandarins have additionally created children dying from Covid. Fatalities an unlikely ally for the reviled coronavirus, amongst the 5 -14 age group are estimated and that ally is National Hysteria. Available at 14 per million or 1:71,000, this being in many households near you. lower than any flu season. Professor Chris Everything in our lives carries an Whitty has stated that children are also at attendant risk, the school run being just far less risk of becoming seriously ill with one example, but we do know that the Covid, this paling in comparison with transmission risk to teachers from pupils, the disparities that come from keeping or vice versa, is almost imperceptible. Of them out of school. The Government is the cases recently recorded subsequent to now especially anxious that parents might choose to keep their children, in protective the schools reopening back in June, there were 73 cases of transmission documented custody, at home. in a pupil population group of 1.6 million, I refer to some of the key points the UK CMOs have provided: Firstly, that evidence making it a statistical possibility that 1:23,000 could become affected. I’d just has shown that (this) lack of schooling like to remind those unfamiliar with my can exacerbate inequalities and reduce a previous columns that the odds of getting child’s life chances. Interestingly, they also pancreatic cancer is around 6:100,000, point out that home-based education in which of course translates as roughly lockdown has NOT reduced these societal 1:16,700. So realistically, you’ve got more inequalities. Secondly, they highlight the chance of getting pancreatic cancer, than exceptionally small risk of children dying. of your child catching Covid at school. Thirdly, teachers are at no higher risk than Sage is still terrorising our population in any other profession, (slow hand-clap with threats of another lockdown being rehere) and the risks they face are more imposed. Sir Mark Walport said, “we know likely teacher-teacher. I ask parents out that less than 1 in 5 have been infected, there with school aged children, ‘surely therefore… 80% of the population are still you’re thoroughly bored of home-schooling, home-tutoring and nannying by now?’ susceptible.” I think a repeat lockdown is something the country would find comI know I am personally dangling precaripletely intolerable. Doing it once could ously at the end of a very short rope after be justifiable and understandable, twice six months, and I couldn’t contemplate would be political, social and financial even two more weeks of it. One thing suicide. is for sure: in the absence of education, Talking of finances, furlough fraud is our children’s generation will be lost. My

back on the radar. No surprise there. Many companies had their employees working throughout lockdown, whilst they were on Mr Sunak’s payroll. According to a study by the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Zurich, 63% of the 9,000 people polled were working. Cast this percentage across our national workforce, it amounts to a staggering 6 million employees working, whilst being paid via theft of Government money. I know of several employers who claimed they were non-operational, whilst their staff were (unhappily) forced to continue their working patterns at home. There will inevitably be a comeuppance, and I personally will have no sympathy. I recently mentioned my ailing car. On a subsequent trip we decided to hire a car and were very impressed with it; natty little car, lots of bells and whistles, replete with mandatory proximity key and ignition, it was all very cute. Obviously technology is paving the way for vehicles. Gone are the traditional manual keys and mechanical vehicle systems. However in this week's news, researchers have discovered a way to forge electronic-style door keys, using smart phone audio recordings. Scientists from the National University of Singapore have published a document showing audio recordings of a key being inserted in the lock, providing enough information for a computer to determine the shape of the key. It works by filtering the sounds to detect the clicks of the pins inside the lock against the key. Then, it builds up a virtual picture of the correct key based on the clicks to estimate the correct pattern of ridges. [Wow, this is so 007 / NASA technology]. The researcher said the system regularly managed to narrow down the correct key from a database of more than 330,000 potential keys to just 3. So now you’re not only worried about somebody cloning your credit card with a proximity device in a restaurant, you fear somebody might access your car in the drive whilst you sleep, you can now complete the terror triad that they might even copy your door key. Not that I’d personally worry too much. Anyone breaking into OUR house would have to tidy up first, in order to find anything, and even if they got the car key, well - as you know - it won’t take them very far. Isn’t life sweet! Seriously though, cyber security is now a huge industry, and security researchers have often been called upon to test the waters, before enemy agents do it instead. Back in 2015 researchers were able to use 3D printing to forge a set of keys used by the US Transportation Security Administration, after a photo of the master keys was accidentally published in the press. You’d better believe it. Whilst on the subject of foreign agents, mention must be made of Alexei Navalny,

Russian security agents tracking Navalny, claim they saw no attempt to poison him. Who better to say, ‘there is no foul play,’ than those who could actually be behind it…

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

the Russian opposition leader, who was rushed to hospital in Berlin after becoming ill on a flight on Saturday. It is hypothesised that he drank a poisoned cup of tea in Tomsk airport, in Siberia, whilst waiting for his flight to Moscow. His plane was diverted to Omsk, and from there he was taken - albeit with some delay - by air ambulance to Berlin. The Omsk Ministry of Health issued a statement saying, ‘no toxins were found in Navalny’s system.’ My view is - if you’re clever enough to do it, you don’t leave tell-tale evidence, and we don’t need Mr Bond or Ian Fleming to back this theory up. Navalny is currently in a coma, and breathing through a ventilator, with doctors describing him as being ‘stable.’ Russian doctors dispute any wrongdoing, saying he was suffering from a “metabolic disorder.“ Russian security agents, who have admitted they were tracking his every move, claim they saw 'no attempt' to poison him. They suggest if he had been poisoned, it was on the plane to Moscow. Navalny has often commented that his movements are tracked by security services. Who better to say, ‘there is no foul play,’ than those who could actually be behind it……. The fact that Navalny has been a prominent critic of Putin for over a decade, leaves only a minuscule margin of doubt that this critic was poisoned. In the light of the 2018 Novichok {nerve agent} poisoning of the Skripals - something also furiously denied by the Kremlin - it presents a case for likely use of nerve agents, which can cause ‘metabolic acidosis.’ An update yesterday confirms he was poisoned, laying 'bear' the Russian lie. Navalny is now being treated with the same antidote given to the Skripals. So, I’m signing off soon, on the countdown to imminent classroom chaos. Uniform, bags, calculators, PE kit, Oyster card, clean shoes, masks? - you need to make sure you’re ready athough, how bad can it be? Well, if you’re a UK child, you’ll know pretty much what to expect. Feel a tad of sympathy for those just returned to school in Thailand, with school rules much worse than ours. Social media this week showed an image of a well dressed teenage girl, whose hair length exceeded that newly prescribed by the state: short bobs for girls, and crewcuts for boys. Her long, neat ponytail was unceremoniously and humiliatingly chopped off on a public platform, before she then fell to her knees, crying in shock. This type of aggression has fuelled activists championing for reform, feeling that the ruling party, led by Prayuth Chan-ocha, in charge since 2014, should be overthrown. Thai students in schools and universities are calling for changes to the constitution, demanding that the voices of the young are listened to, and that militaristic practises intended to curb dissent, be abolished. Life isn't so bad, after all, for our classes of 2020. But do be sure to get your haircut before the first day of term. Pomegranate Drizzle Loaf I have added rosewater to this delicious cake but use it sparingly as it is one of those flavours where less is more. Coated with a pink glaze - the colour is a natural combination of pomegranate juice and icing sugar. Straightforward to make, keep this recipe for any family tea or gathering. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time 40 minutes Makes: 1 loaf Ingredients for the loaf 200g self-raising flour 100g golden caster sugar 140g butter or non dairy margarine 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 3 large eggs ½ teaspoon rose water 150ml non dairy yoghurt (I like to use coconut or vanilla flavour) 100g grated carrot – roughly 1 carrot 40g roughly chopped pistachios Ingredients for the glaze 1 pomegranate – deseeded and about 2 tablespoons juice 150g icing sugar - sieved 2 tablespoons pistachio nuts – roughly chopped Method 1. Test with a toothpick which should come out dry when inserted into the middle of the loaf. 5. To make the pomegranate glaze mix the icing sugar with a little bit of the juice gradually until you have a glaze the consistency of runny honey. 6. Once the loaf is completely cool you can carefully pour your pink pomegranate glaze over the top. 7. Top with roughly chopped pistachios and pomegranate seeds.

ASK THE RABBI

27 AUGUST 2020

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com HEAVEN AND HELL PART 2

Dear Rabbi A while ago you were asked about heaven and hell and said you would deal with it in parts. I am an avid reader and never noticed the discussion. Can you revisit this now? Is there such a thing in Judaism as heaven and hell? Isn’t it just a means of luring people into obedience in anticipation of some eternal reward or fear of eternal punishment? If Judaism does believe in these concepts, how might that differ from other faiths who believe in the same? Winston Dear Winston Last week we discussed one aspect of heaven and hell in the context of one’s pride or embarrassment depending on their choice actions in this world. There is however another element to this so-called hell as well. It’s not just about the commissions of your life – the things you did wrong that are now being replayed. It is every bit and perhaps on some level even more so about the omissions. Let me explain: Imagine buying a lottery ticket each week and you play the same numbers each time. One week you choose not to buy one and that is the week in which those numbers come up. How would that make you feel? There’s nothing you can do about it now – that feeling will crush you. Multiply that by an infinite amount and you’ll get something, though hardly much of an idea of what you will feel when they show you two images upstairs. An image of what you became and an image of what you could have become. Each of us has a preordained destiny. G-d has a Master plan and created each of us unique with our own intended goals, purposes and missions. If you look back on your life and realise that at a certain interval you could have become CEO of the company, but because you chose

to make a wrong turn, you ended up in the mail room – well there’s no turning back the clock on that. And that hurts – that’s hell. The reason I say this is really worse than all your misdeeds being flagged up is because as intense as that embarrassment is there is a method – a process of eradication – or purging to be more precise. In other words, much like in Jewish law, an omission is worse than a commission. If I asked you what is worse – eating pig or not putting on Tefilin, your first instinct will tell you, “eating pig.” And on one level you might be right. The thing is for eating the pig – for staining your soul as it were, you did wrong you could make amends even if you have to go through a painful process in doing so. But what you didn’t do right – that’s it – the moment passed you by and you cannot get it back. Even if you put on four different pairs of Tefilin every day for the rest of your life – this one day you can never get back. This missed opportunity is gone forever. Now think about that in the context of the process of being shown two pictures – one of what you became and the other of what you could have been. But let’s discuss briefly that other element of hell – the one that perhaps we are all most familiar

with. Yes there is such a thing as heaven – not a place where we sit wafting on clouds with halos but where our souls experience intense spiritual euphoria. Can I describe it to you? No – I haven’t been there just yet, thank G-d. But it is an experience where isdabka ruche b’rucha – your soul literally bonds and unites as one with its Supernal source above. Have you ever noticed how people sway when they pray or even study Torah? Mysticism explains that there is a G-dly element – a Divine spark contained within you – a spiritual soul which, like a small flame of fire that flickers and when placed before the inferno reaches toward it to become totally consumed therein – so too in times of intense spiritual experience – when your soul feels the ecstasy of the moment it is reaching - looking to connect to that ethereal inferno Above. If that’s what the soul craves for down here, imagine the intense ecstasy it experiences when finally able to get there. That’s heaven in the conventional sense. Hell is a term I’ve been using loosely till now. Truth be told we don’t believe in hell. Judaism never speaks of hell. Other religions do – it’s a punishment and hell implies eternal damnation. We call it in Hebrew Gehenim, or in English more appropriately Purgatory. Hell is not, as we might assume, a punishment. It is a process of purging the soul from the misdeeds that have contaminated it – the negative spiritual germs that cleave to it – so that it too then can bask in the euphoria of that upward spiral of spiritual bliss. You cannot enter into the king’s palace while dirty or with scruffy

clothes. You have to cleanse yourself first before you present yourself. Your soul needs to go through that purging process whereby thereafter it too can relish in the more sublime experience of heaven. Now you’ll say to me that’s all my soul. That is something

But more on that in the final instalment next week…

Pirkei Avot We meet another two characters this week in the chain following down from Moshe Rabbenu , Yehoshua Ben Perachya and Nittai Ha’Arbeli. The advice of Reb Yeshoshua is threefold: ‘ accept a teacher upon yourself, acquire a friend for yourself, and judge everyone favourably.’ The state of some Jewish people nowadays is pitiful. Sadly many people do not judge favourably; people readily accept gossip with vigour and are happy to spread lies and slander

remote – detached from the physical me. I, as I understand myself won’t feel the pain. For that we need to discuss the relationship between the soul and the body at the time of death.

Mishna 6 around communities as quickly as it takes to simply press a button. The Beis Hamikdash was destroyed for baseless hatred despite much Torah learning being done at the time. Nowadays much Torah is being learned around the world and yet where is our Temple? It’s buried in destructive WhatsApp status messages. It’s burning in Facebook posts. It’s drowning in gossip, far too ashamed to show its face amongst untold baseless hatred.

Rabbinic leaders are not doing enough to raise the importance of an issue that the Chafetz Chaim found worthy enough to devote so much of his precious time too. Many people who spread lashon horah and motze shemra are frum people, yet the worlds and relationships they destroy in moments, with lies and gossip will drag their souls into Gehinom and cause our long exile to meander on for many more years.

Corona Diary #13

27 AUGUST 2020

Stretching Teshuvah During Corona BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN Summer has concluded, schools have “restarted” and the scent of Ellul is in the airpunctuated every morning by the blaring shofar and at night by solemn selichot. Our religious sensitivities shift into “Ellul mode”- introspection, moral inventory and, ultimately, the desire for metamorphosis. The Chasam Sofer would remark that even the walls shake at the onset of Ellul. Though the religious intensity of this period can sometimes be frightening, this month-long experience promises growth and transformation. Teshuvah can only be authentic if it partakes of our contemporary context. Without question, the process of moral recovery and religious transformation is timeless and unaffected by shifts in the human condition. The Talmud Yerushalmi comments that teshuvah actually preceded human history by two thousand years - implying that teshuvah is an eternal experience unrelated to current events or cultural changes. Yet, teshuvah as an act of Man, is also influenced by the cultural and historical context. The process of repentance can’t be severed from the setting and from the ‘mood’ of a particular period. We are definitely living through a unique period in human history and it is crucial to identify the particular tone or voice of teshuvah which matches this transformational period. Typically, teshuvah is an “inward experience”- a deep dive into the soul. We probe the entirety of our lives - from the actual sins we violated to the horrible traits we are saddled with, to the immense potential we have wasted through indolence and laziness. An honest and thorough religious inventory should yield both character transformation as well as a rehabilitation of our relationship with G-d. In the great mussar school of Slobodka a popular Ellul phrase was “teshuvah es nisht zu zein a besere mensch, nahr zu zein an andere mentsch- teshuvah isn’t merely [characterized] by the aim to become a better person but to become a different person”. Expanding that motto, it may be added that teshuva isn’t only becoming a different person but also restoring our relationship with G-d. For this transformation to occur we must study ourselves lives down to the most detailed aspects of our lives. However, there is an entirely different scope of teshuva – one which isn’t inward but outward and which doesn’t focus upon personal examination but rather assesses the state of our broader world.

In his ground breaking sefer known as “Orot Ha’teshuvah”, Rav Kook showcased the broader syllabus of teshuva: The entire universe is constantly surging toward teshuvah- toward a return to a full alignment with G-d. Comprehensive personal teshuva participates in this broader process: sin has separated us from the natural alignment with the will of G-d and with the world around us. Teshuvah restores us to a more fully synced state with G-d and His Universe. Full teshuva demands not only micro-analysis of our personal behaviour but also assessing the state of our broader world and trying to advance it toward a more redeemed condition. Rav Kook described this process in mystical or kaballastic terms, but even without invoking kaballastic concepts, an entirely different vista of teshuva emerges: restoring the universe – and not an individual, to a closer interaction with, and recognition of, G-d. It would appear that our current year demands a greater emphasis upon this broader sweep of teshuva. Obviously, we are never exempted from the thorough and tenacious self-assessment and selfcritique vital to religious improvement. The Corona crisis doesn’t acquit us from basic religious and moral responsibilities to continually improve ourselves. Our “chest-beating” during the recitation of viduy confessional cannot be any less fervent simply because we live in a confusing and confounding reality. However, in addition to the classic demands of teshuvah, this year we are mandated to consider the broader “state” of our world. On many levels it feels as if the world is less functional than it was a year ago. The toll in human suffering during the past year is staggering. Sadly, for many, G-d is far less visible in a world shrouded by darkness and death. Economic and social vulnerabilities have been unmasked and the world feels less stable and less firm. It appears that the world requires a teshuvah process – a process of rehabilitation and spiritual restoration. Does human suffering disturb us? Does the less visible presence of G-d upset us? Can our personal renovation contribute to a broader reformation? These “Rav Kook” inspired questions are particularly pressing this year. An additional tonality to our teshuvah of 2020 concern our recognition of freedom of choice. A pandemic can be very enfeebling; human beings are reduced to statistics and our sense of individual autonomy is challenged. Teshuva must also re-empower us to believe in our own capacity not only to transform our identity but

Full teshuva demands not only microanalysis of our personal behaviour but also assessing the state of our broader world and trying to advance it toward a more redeemed condition also to redeem a world which feels more broken than ever. In a world of statistical inevitability teshuva must reinforce the belief in the absolute freedom of choice which every individual possesses. It seems as if the teshuva horizons this year include a more global outlook- assessing the state of our world, dreaming of a better place, and reaffirming human capacity to reform a sometimes incorrigible reality. The corona crisis challenges us to broaden our view of teshuva but it also enables a more honest and forthright inner conversation with G-d. Teshuva is predicated upon an honest dialogue with G-d; during the course of the year we hide from both ourselves and certainly from G-d. The gravitas and solemnity of this period helps create a more honest and candid rendezvous with G-d, yet, sadly it is difficult to be completely honest- even during the climax of neilah davening. Human beings are fraught with dishonesty and delusion and even our most sincere moments are haunted by the prospect of likely failure. How are we to speak with G-d if our tongues are dishonest and our hearts deceitful? G-d only accepts honest

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

hearts and true words! Fortunately, there is a different route toward successful communication with G-d: he listens to a broken heart-”karov Hashem l’nishberei leiv”. This year we are all fractured people with broken hearts. Our world has shrunk, our dreams have been smashed, and our futures have been muddled. Everyone has lost something during this crisis and this loss has broken us. If we are more broken this year than in past years, we are also more prepared for a candid conversation with G-d. In some ways, corona has provided us a head start for teshuvah. Typically, several weeks of introspection are necessary to reach the state of broken heartedness. This year we begin the process as broken people and hopefully our conversation will be real and raw. We have spent months living life without layers and without cover-ups. Hopefully we will approach our meeting with G-d with that same unadorned gritty realism. Rabbi Moshe Taragin has taught at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion, for the past 22 years.

Ki Teitzei RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE

WAR & PEACE

The Torah reading takes war for granted. In a perfect society no-one would ever fight, as we see from Isaiah and Micah who speak of abolishing weapons and people sitting peacefully under the shade of a tree. In the interim, until we reach the messianic ideal, there are three categories of war spelled out in Mishnah Sotah 8:7, optional, commanded, and obligatory war. Rambam (Hilchot Melachim 8:1) speaks of two categories, a “mitzvah”-war and a “r’shut”-war. The “mitzvah”-war is fought against the seven Canaanite nations, against Amalek, or in general in defence against the attacks of an enemy. Rambam rules that before waging war one must make overtures of peace; the Sifrei and those like the Vilna Gaon who follow it say that the overtures of peace are not made to all enemies but in the case of an optional, “r’shut”-war. The peace message is basically, “War is bad for everyone, so let us find a modus vivendi”. The crucial thing is that both sides must be able to trust each other.

THE LAST MITZVAH

Many of the Torah’s 613 commandments are found in this week’s sidra. The final law in the sidra is to remember Amalek

and his threat to Israel. It sounds very vengeful – “Remember what Amalek did to you”. It embarrasses some people. “Can’t you forgive and forget?”, they say. Forgiving does not necessarily go with forgetting. Who got hurt by the enemy? The victims – and they are long since dead. No-one can expect us to forgive on their behalf. If they showed any interest in forgiving their persecutors, that is their business, not ours. They did not ask or authorise us to exercise forgiveness on their behalf. We cannot be asked to forgive, and if we are asked we cannot give an answer. What about forgetting? Impossible when G-d has given us the capacity of remembrance. Those who want us to forget want us to eradicate history. We cannot be asked to sever ourselves from history or to sever history from human psychology. Sometimes an event fades a bit over time, but the basic duty of remembering

27 AUGUST 2020

is the acknowledgment of facts. That is perhaps why the Torah tells us two things – “Remember” and “Don’t forget.”

THE MUSICAL QUALITY OF THE MITZVOT

This week’s parashah contains a very large number of commandments. Rav Kook said that every commandment has a unique musical quality which makes us want to sing, a wonderful comment which echoes a verse in the Psalms – “Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage” (Psalm 119:54). Before looking at the word “songs” let us explain that “the house of my pilgrimage” denotes “my earthly journey”. The reference to singing is because every time that the believer observes a mitzvah, he or she feels such joy that they want to sing. If we test this idea in regard to praying to G-d or supporting a fellow human

We cannot be asked to sever ourselves from history or to sever history from human psychology.

being we can fully understand it. Being in the presence of G-d is a source of ecstasy; improving the lot of another person gives us a feeling of satisfaction. But how about, for example, the rule of “sha’atnez”, which forbids us to combine certain textiles, or not carrying things on Shabbat outside specified boundaries? Borrowing an idea from Rav Soloveitchik’s great work, “Halakhic Man”, we can answer that when we fulfil mitzvot of this kind we help to establish the kind of world that G-d wants, where every person and every thing has its place. Fulfilling G-d’s plans for the Creation is exhilarating and has, as Rav Kook says, “a unique musical quality”. Mesillat Yesharim: Hilchot Shabbat Part 51 RABBI MORDECHAI ULLMAN We are finally at the climax of Mesillat Yesharim! This chapter (26 in the book) is all about Kedusha! There are two stages to Kedusha. First, what a person sets out to do and then what G-d assists them with. It is not an easy level to achieve, but it is achieved through heavenly assistance as a “gift”, we are assured. At first, a person sets out to “sanctify themselves slightly” - for example, they refrain from glancing at forbidden sights; then, from heaven they are rewarded with extra holiness, (which may mean they have a sudden enthusiasm to avoid the situation where they are tempted to stumble in areas of Kedusha). True holiness though, is far more than this; it is the [appropriate] abstinence from physical pleasure and instead being filled with a feeling of closeness to Hashem. Aharon the Kohen Gadol was praised for being comparable to an angel of G-d. Even when a person is involved in the necessary

activities that a physical being requires, they don’t stop thinking of G-d. They may eat, for example, but whilst doing so they don’t forget about G-d. Achieving the ultimate in human holiness is too large a feat for a person to achieve on their own and therefore one who sets out to make the effort will only reach their goal with the gift from above that we discussed earlier. Once a person has achieved holiness, their “mundane” activities too, become infused with holiness. We see this concept with eating of the Korbanot in the Beit Hamikdash. An apparently mundane activity performed by the Kohanim, achieves atonement for the donor of the Korban. Ramchal now explains the distinction between a pure person and a holy person. For the former, they only carry out mundane activities as much as is necessary, no more. Holiness achieves more than this; it actually converts the mundane into the holy and such a person may well be described as a “Mishkan”.

We continue with the condition of Borer that relates to selecting the desired from the undesired. Usually it is only in that manner in which Borer can be done (so long as it is done by “hand” - as explained last week - and for immediate use). There are clarifications that are needed regarding this condition. Firstly, there is a difference between selecting the undesired item from a mixture, which is forbidden, and removing it from the top of a pile, which is permitted. One may also remove a peel from a food or a shell from an egg or nut, as this is the way to access the food. Furthermore, the facts that items are next to each other and touching, does not establish a mixture. Only once some moving about is required to sort, does a Borer situation arise. So, if one has a portion of chicken next to a portion of potatoes on a plate, it would not be Borer to remove the non-desired food from the plate, but if one has such pieces in a pile on a plate, they would be considered mixed. If foods are placed in a fridge or freezer and are recognised as different items, such as a jar of olives next to a bag of carrots, that would not be considered a mixture, but loose food items that are

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

mixed in a fridge or freezer would invoke the laws of Borer. Whilst eating, some are stringent not to remove bones from food as it involves Borer and that is a preferred manner; however, if one sees others removing the bones, one need not protest as whilst one is eating there may be room for leniency and it may be comparable to removing a shell from a food. If a fly lands in a cup of drink therefore, one either removes it with a bit of the surrounding liquid or pours out the fly together with some liquid.

Elevating Joy

BY RABBI BEN-TZION SPITZ “To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch

Heaven.” – Johannes A. Gaertner The Torah reading of Ki Tetze has a seemingly eclectic grouping of commandments. One of them, a biblical precursor to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations, states as follows: “When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, so that you do not bring bloodguilt on your house if anyone should fall from it.” – Deuteronomy 22:10 As he typically does, the Berdichever reads deeply into the verse and comes up with some interesting revelations about joy and the ideal form of enjoying joy. Just as one may experience joy when building a new house, so too, any new joy that one experiences, can be built up, and elevated. It starts with the realisation that it all comes from G-d and we need to demonstrate gratitude to Him. And just as one might build a parapet

A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE

The Ultimate Warrior RABBI GOODMAN Although, thanks to the likes of “Call of Duty” and “Fortnite,” most children are trained in the art of mortal combat from the age of seven, nevertheless, we tend to view our lives as “war-free.” However, Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato, in his acclaimed ethical masterpiece, Mesillas Yesharim, views life somewhat differently. Referring to our soul’s presence in this world, he writes that, “Man has truly been placed in the middle of the most intense battle.” We exist on the frontline of a bitter war between our spiritual inclination—our Yetzer HaTov—and our physical inclination—our Yetzer HaRah. A formidable adversary, the Yetzer HaRah shows no mercy and will not relent until it completely vanquishes the Yetzer HaTov. However, thankfully Hashem does not expect us to fight this war alone. In addition to placing at our disposal a vast array of spiritual artillery, namely, Torah and Mitzvos, He also takes a more than active part on the front lines. Incredibly, we learn from this week’s Parsha, that

although we are the ones who seem to be waging the war, the ultimate warrior in this battle is Hashem Himself. The opening verse of the Parsha says, “When you will go out to war against your enemies, and Hashem, your G-d, will deliver them into your hand, and you will capture its captivity.” The Chidah—Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai (1724-1806)— explains that although this verse refers to a war waged against another nation it also alludes to the war that we wage against our Yetzer HaRah. The Talmud says in tractate Kiddushin (30b) that, “If Hashem were not to help a person [overcome his Yetzer HaRah], he could not succeed [in overcoming his Yetzer HaRah.]” Simply put, a human being does not possess the spiritual aptitude to subjugate his evil inclination and will not triumph without Hashem’s intervention. However, this does not mean we are free to rest on our laurels, sipping a Pina Colada, while Hashem valiantly annihilates our opponent. Without a sincere desire on our part to abandon our erroneous ways and realign ourselves with our

… that the way to connect our joy to its divine provenance is by articulating gratitude… on the highest point of the structure, the roof of a house, so too, there is a way to circumscribe and direct our highest emotions of joy to gratitude. The Berdichever explains that the way to connect our joy to its divine provenance is by articulating gratitude; it is by using words of Torah, of prayer, of songs and praises to G-d. The Berdichever adds that the power, the force behind the words of praise we use is also G-d (or G-d’s name to be more specific) and that in Hebrew, the numerical value of G-d’s name (26) is identical with the numerical value of “your roof”

Creator’s bidding, Hashem will not step in and fight on our behalf. With this principle in mind, the Chidah explains the opening verse of our Parsha: “When you will go out to war against your enemies”—when you launch an all-out attack on your Yetzer HaRah and thereby demonstrate your sincere desire to prevail, then immediately, “Hashem, your G-d, will deliver them into your hand”— Hashem will eradicate your enemy, enabling you to accomplish your ultimate objective, “and you will capture its captivity.” Amazingly, even though Hashem is the One Who delivers the knock-out blow, He will attribute the victory to you. Knowing that the sole onus of battle does not fall upon us makes our spiritual mission a whole lot easier. If we go out with guns blazing, doing everything in our power to improve ourselves and make a genuine change, Hashem will ensure that such a change takes place. This is especially true during this month of Elul—a time in the Jewish calendar devoted to introspection and change. The Hebrew word Elul forms an acronym for the verse, “Ani l’Dodi v’Dodi li” – ‘I am to my Beloved and my Beloved is to me.’ If “I am to my Beloved,” i.e. if I take the initiative and genuinely focus all my energy towards improving my ways and fulfilling Hashem’s command, then “my Beloved is to me,” i.e. Hashem will reciprocate in kind, clearing

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

(26) showing the deep linkage between these concepts. We extend, enhance and elevate our joy by articulating and exhibiting gratitude, using holy words directed to G-d. May we always have the state of mind to experience joy and elevate it by being grateful to its ultimate source. Rabbi Ben-Tzion Spitz is the former Chief Rabbi of Uruguay. Ki Teitzei

Ki Teitzei Word Search

Parshat Ki Teitzei is largely about how to treat ones fellow man/woman and how fitting is this to read in preparation for Rosh Hashana! It covers a vast amount of Mitzvot such as lending without interest, paying workers, not hating Edom and Mitzri nations and returning items that we find to their rightful owner and keeping one’s rooftop safe! There are other Mitzvot such as not delaying bringing a Korban that one has promised to bring and being careful not to wear Shaatnez – a mixture of wool and linen. We also learn of the care one must have for animals – not to muzzle an animal whilst it works and to send off a mother bird before taking its offspring. Amalek is the final Mitzva of the Parsha. Given the mad efforts of this nation to destroy any spirituality in the world, they must be eradicated. We don’t know exactly how to keep this Mitzvah today so instead of fighting Amalek on the outside, we search inside us for how to improve in keeping Mitzvot and steering clear from sin!

Ki Teitzei

In a nutshell Ki Teitzei is Parsha full of Mitzvot and it opens with the laws of Yefat To’ar, which gives the details of how a man must treat a woman that is captured in war whom he feels he wishes to marry. He cannot rush the process though. If he chooses not to keep her in the end, he must send her free and not sell her as a slave. Then we learn of the laws of “double-portion” that a firstborn son receives - the father cannot choose a favourite child instead and must follow the laws of the Torah’s inheritance. The first section ends with what happens to a Ben Sorer U’morer - a boy who doesn’t follow the path of his parents. What happens if you find your friends lost sheep? Or watch? Or coat? Do you walk away and pretend you didn’t see it? Absolutely not! You bring it back to them and perform a Mitzvah of Hashavat Aveida. How we dress is also mandated by the Torah and men and women should dress how the Torah intended them to. There is a rare Mitzvah of Shiluach Haken - sending off a

mother bird before taking its eggs or chicks. You don’t grab the children in front of the mother bird. If the roof of your house is flat and is used or you have a landing on an upper floor there is a Mitzvah to build a fence - keep your house safe! We have the laws of Kilayim - not ploughing with two distinct animals or wearing clothes containing a mixture of wool and linen and, to the Mitzvah of Tzitzit to be placed on four-cornered garments. The laws of forbidden marriages are also detailed and one of special interest is the laws of not marrying a man from the Amon or Moav tribe. Why not? Because on the way out of Egypt they didn’t agree to bring out food to you and worse, they hired Bilaam to (attempt to) curse the nation! We must not despise Edomites as they come from our “brother” Esav and likewise an Egyptian for we were strangers in their land. However badly they treated us, we had accommodation in a land in which we didn’t really belong so we must not treat them badly. This teaches us

Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words as possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.

how grateful we must be to a country that not only hosts our nation (and that applies anywhere around the world) and perhaps our parents for giving us food and shelter too! Hmmm. Interesting laws about interest follow soon after. It must be remembered that it applies to items other than money as well. If you pledge to bring a Korban to Hashem you must ensure to bring it on time. If you lend someone money and you are taking something of theirs as a security, make sure to treat them with decency. If someone works for you, ensure to pay them on time. One must also not cause animals distress and ensure not to muzzle them. There are so many Mitzvot in this week’s Sidra, and that is one reason we are given so many years of the same Parshiot - to return to them and learn them again and see new light in them, Amen!

The Premier League kicks off in two weeks when Klopp’s Liverpool host Championship winners Leeds United at Anfield in what is a dream return to the big time for Marcelo Bielsa’s team. Goldman brace bags Cup against valiant Vale Manchester Maccabi won the Peter Morrison Trophy against Hertswood Vale 2-1 at the end of an action- packed finals day at Wingate & Finchley FC’s Barnet training ground. Aaron Goldman was the two-goal hero for the Mancunians but due to Covid-19 measures Maccabi were unable to actually lift a trophy. Vale though almost caused a huge upset as they took the lead in the final with a superb strike from Harry Graham before Goldman levelled the match then nodded home the winner late on. Last season’s MSFL Division Two champions had stunned HMH in the semi-finals with a 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory after drawing 1-1 with the holders during the

60-minute match. With no extra time due to Covid-19 measures, Vale ‘keeper Adam Zaidman took the plaudits, saving three spot kicks to book a final berth. Jordan Harris fired home what proved to be a crucial penalty to edge his team in front before Zaidman ended HMH’s cup hopes. There were no complaints from HMH who levelled an exciting match in normal time with an Oscar Wagner strike after Graham opened the scoring for Vale in the first half. Manchester ran out comfortable 3-1 winners in their semi-final against Borussia Barnet courtesy of goals from Greg Jacobs, Sam Hattoin and Goldman. HMH edged the third place play off 1-0. The MSFL begins on September 13.
