ISRAEL OFFERS AID AFTER BEIRUT BLAST

06 AUGUST 2020/16 AV 5780

BY DAVID SAFFER

Israel has offered humanitarian assistance to Lebanon after a colossal chemical explosion rocked Beirut port on Tuesday. Negotiations through a United Nations intermediary to supply medical equipment have reportedly taken place according to Israeli media. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government had not officially commented on progress made at the time of going to press. The Red Cross has confirmed over 135 people died in the disaster with more than 5,000 injured following a fire at the port that resulted in a catastrophic blast caused by 2,750 tonnes of unsecured ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse units (3pm GMT). A number of port officials are under house arrest pending an investigation. It has since emerged that agency officials

requested hazardous chemicals to be removed. Rescue workers are searching for over 100 people reported missing among collapsed buildings, rubble and glass from shattered windows in the blast site. Four hospitals were reported to be damaged by the blast. Injuries and fatalities are expected to rise in the coming days. President Michel Aoun has declared three days of mourning. A two-week state of emergency is in place in the city where up to 300,000 people are believed to be homeless. Although the IDF is on high alert to a Hezbollah attack on the Lebanese border, Defence Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said in a statement after the blast that Israel had approached Lebanon

CAA calls for Sheerman BY ROBERT LEVY Campaign Against Antisemitism has called on the Labour Party to withdraw the whip from Barry Sheerman over an anti-Semitic tweet. A number of Labour MPs have also called on leader Keir Starmer to act following the incident. There was outrage from a number of Twitter users after the Huddersfield MP made a “silver shekels” comment over Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s possible House of Lords peerages. “Apparently there has been a bit of a run on silver shekels!”, wrote Sheerman. Pressured into explaining the offensive post, Sherrman named two Jewish businessmen who had not received accolades. “Apparently both Richard Desmond & Philip Green were on the original list for seats in the House of Lords!”,” he said. Sheerman added that his comment had come from the bible about people accepting ‘30 pieces of silver’. Fallout was swift with some Labour parliamentarians backing CAA’s call regarding the whip. Sheerman had yet to speak with Starmer when he deleted the offensive tweets and offered a fulsome apology after “helpful guidance” from senior Labour officials. Sheerman also announced that he would

caused offence.” A CAA spokesperson said, “Sheerman’s first reaction on hearing that two prominent Jewish businessmen supposedly missed out on peerages is to think about ‘silver shekels’, alluding in one fell swoop to both classic and modern anti-Semitic tropes about Jews corrupting politics with money and being more loyal to Israel than their own countries. “Sheerman must immediately face disciplinary proceedings and lose the whip of both the Labour and Co-operative Parties.” Noting Starmer had a more fundamental question to answer about his parliamentary party. CAA noted, “How long are Labour MPs capable of going without making brazenly anti-Semitic statements? Labour’s anti-Semitism problem apparently goes well beyond the Party’s far-left contingent.” In a statement to his local Labour party, Sheerman reportedly said he was responding to Johnson’s honours list and by chance chose the businessmen’s names. “I was so angry I was intending to liken the

places in the Lords as a “thirty pieces of silver” type of reward,” he wrote. “This alone is an unpleasant thing to say but I tried to be too clever and looked up the currency that might have been used 2,000 years ago, and found information suggesting it was the shekel. I used this in my comment. In a separate comment, I also chose two rich businessmen who have received negative press attention as examples of the types of people being raised to the Lords by the government.” Sheerman added, “It never entered my head when I was making that comment that the two people I mentioned were Jewish. I can see how offensive my comments have been, given this, and I am profoundly sorry. It was never my intention to make any implication about Jewish people, and I am horrified that I inadvertently did so.” A Labour spokesperson said: “Barry has deleted the tweets and apologised. He deeply regrets the offence caused.” Sheerman has written to the Board of Deputies.

President Reuven Rivlin expressed Israel’s condolences in Arabic, Hebrew and English. “We share the pain of the Lebanese people and sincerely reach out to offer our aid at this difficult time,” he said. Addressing the Knesset yesterday, Netanyahu sent “condolences” to the

Lebanese people and again confirmed Israel were ready to offer “humanitarian assistance”. Tel Aviv City Hall in a show of solidarity projected Lebanon’s flag on its building. “Humanity precedes any conflict, and our hearts are with the Lebanese people in the wake of the terrible disaster that befell them,” Mayor Ron Huldai reportedly said. But with Israel and Lebanon technically at war, Huldai’s gesture was slated in some quarters including Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Rafi Peretz, who backed aid to injured civilians but described Huldai’s action as “moral confusion” on Twitter. Minister of Environmental Protection Gila Gamliel has reportedly warned of the

potential danger of similar chemical depots at Haifa port and has endorsed a fiveyear plan to clear “facilities and hazardous materials” from the area. “We could make Haifa port Israel’s greenest attraction with green environmental industries within a decade,” she noted. Globally there has been an outpouring of support. Countries around the world offered aid including Cyprus, where the explosion was heard. In the UK, the Queen sent a message of condolence with the Duke of Edinburgh. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who have been injured or lost their lives, and all those whose homes and livelihoods have been affected,” she said. A number of British citizens are believed to be caught up in the disaster. Prime Minister Boris Johnson described footage from the port in the immediate aftermath of the blast as “shocking”. “The UK is ready to provide support in any way we can, including to those British nationals affected,” he wrote on Twitter. There were rumours after the blast that Israel was connected to the explosion. These were quickly quashed although Israeli media speculation reportedly noted the site was in part, a Hezbollah weapons depot for advanced precision-guided missiles. Israeli intelligence exposed three Hezbollah sites as factories for assembling precision-guided missiles at Beirut Port in October 2018 although, not in the same area as Tuesday’s horrific incident.

Yeshiva and Seminary budget concern Israel’s state budget deficit has reached NIS 70 billion. Finance Ministry figures released yesterday comes on the back of rising tensions in Israel’s coalition government over its state budget that could herald fresh elections in the coming months. For ultra-orthodox communities the question over Yeshiva and Seminary budgets is a deep concern. Yeshiva Association chairman Avraham Friedman has warned that for young married students a lack of clarity over approved budgets is a major issue. The association has called for a temporary ruling enabling married students to receive larger government grants during the coronavirus crisis because until an approved budget is announced students reportedly receive NIS 600 per month, equating to NIS 3.5 per hour. Finance Committee Chairman Moshe Gafni updated Chareidi representatives at the Knesset this week. “Sooner or later, all of the students will be standing in front of a financial pipeline that has been turned off completely and they and their families will be poverty-stricken and hungry as a direct result of what is taking place now,” Friedman reportedly told Gafni.

Anti-Semite Chabloz new criminal charges BY ADAM MOSES Convicted anti-Semite Alison Chabloz faces new criminal charges relating to alleged comments on two internet radio broadcasts. The trio of charges, thanks to the efforts of Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, contravene Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003. CAA allege Chabloz was a guest on two internet radio shows, the Realist Report hosted by John Friend in May 2019 followed by Graham Hart and Brian Smyth’s show two months later. Hart and Smyth are both far-right extremists. Hart, an admirer of Hitler, was arrested in May following evidence presented to police by CAA. During the show, Chabloz made alleged hate comments including about the police

and the Holocaust. Holocaust-denier Friend approves of Hitler’s treatment of European Jews. On his show, Chabloz allegedly accused Jewish people of inventing the Holocaust to profit financially, insisted there was nothing wrong with saying ‘Hitler was right’ and claimed the judge who convicted her was intimidated by the ‘Jewish lobby’ among other comments. A trial date has to be set. Stephen Silverman, CAA Director of Investigations and Enforcement, welcomed news that the Crown Prosecution Service was moving on “actionable offences committed by a notorious and unrepentant anti-Semite”. He added, “If Chabloz continues to pile up convictions with no punitive impact or remedial effect on her behaviour, that is a mockery of justice. “If convicted of these charges, Chabloz

must face a sentence with real teeth if the criminal justice system wishes to deter others from following her odious example.” In related news, an investigation instigated by CAA found that Chabloz falsely claimed a court officer had agreed with her anti-Semitic views earlier this year. Chabloz also had an application for a judicial review of past charges denied by the High Court in October 2019. Silverman said the court’s landmark judgment considered Holocaust denial illegal when used as a means by which to hound Jews. “This is a major step forward in the fight against anti-Jewish racism and paves the way for Chabloz to be returned to prison if she loses her appeal for breach of sentence next year,” he added. Two years ago, CAA’s private prosecution, continued by the Crown Prosecution Service, saw Chabloz become the first person in Britain to be convicted of Holocaust denial in a precedent-setting case. Chabloz was found guilty on two counts of sending “grossly offensive” messages through a public communications network at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in May 2018. A third charge related to a song performed by the singer-songwriter at a farright forum in London in 2016 and uploaded to YouTube. All charges contravened section 127 of the Communications Act. Chabloz was banned from entering France until 2059. Under cross-examination, Chabloz described herself as a Holocaust revisionist. Chabloz vehemently denied the existence of gas chambers and contested six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis citing that it was “unlikely to be more than a million.” Her songs included iconic Jewish chords from Hevenu Shalom Aleichem and Hava Nagila. The conviction set a new precedent in British law on incitement on social media and whether the law considered Holocaust denial to be “grossly offensive”.

District Judge John Zani was “entirely satisfied” material in each song complained of, written and sung by Chabloz, then 54, from Glossop were “grossly offensive” when judged by standards of an “open and multi-racial society” as opposed to any of them being merely offensive. “The defendant has failed, by some considerable margin, to persuade this court that her right to freedom of speech as provided by Article 10, under the guise of her work as an artist, can properly provide her with immunity from prosecution in relation to each of the songs complained of,” he noted. Gideon Falter, CAA chairman said at the time that the verdict sent a “strong message” that Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic conspiracy would not be tolerated. “Chabloz has dedicated herself over the course of years to inciting others to hate Jews, principally by claiming that the Holocaust was a hoax perpetrated by Jews to defraud the world,” he said. Chabloz attempted to overturn her original conviction on technicalities relating to what constituted sending communications online. The High Court upheld the earlier judgment. Chabloz also attempted to overturn her conviction on technicalities regarding the case brought as a private prosecution by CAA and continued by CPS. Chabloz was sentenced to a 20-week prison sentence suspended for two years, 180 hours unpaid community service, an indefinite order against contacting two CAA leaders and an order banning her from social media for 12 months. She was also ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge and £600 costs. The sentence and conviction were later upheld at Southwark Crown Court. Judge Christopher Hehir said Chabloz was a Holocaust denier who had “lost all sense of perspective”. District Judge Jonathan Taaffe later found Chabloz guilty of breaching conditions of her suspected sentence. Chabloz is appealing the decision.

Tensions over state budget BY DAVID SAFFER Tensions are rising in Israel’s coalition government over a state budget and it could lead to new elections this year. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes Blue & White’s Party preference for a biennial budget as it will damage prospects of the economy bouncing back from the coronavirus pandemic. Blue & White leader Benny Gantz backs a biennial option as agreed in the coalition deal. Netanyahu remains steadfast in his viewpoint. “We must twig the meaning of approving a biennial budget,” he reportedly said. “It means we’ll have to deal with substantial financial cuts. “This is the exact opposite of what should be done. This is not the time for cuts, this is the time to allot funds to the people.” Netanyahu added, “We must continue for the welfare of the citizens of Israel, to open the education system, to transfer much-needed funds to the healthcare system, we’ll achieve this with an immediate budget.” Gantz has dismissed Netanyahu’s comments over a biennial budget leading to financial cuts as ‘fake news’. “It’s all fake. We must introduce a good

financial plan for the good of the Israeli public,” Gantz reportedly said. “It’s all a fairy tale, we need one budget, a stable one that takes into account the country’s financial uncertainty, we can do this, it’s only five quarters.” Commenting on a possible fourth election, Gantz noted, “Whoever does not abide by the agreement, which was signed only three months ago, will later have to provide explanations to what happened. “The ultra-Orthodox and all the partners are also responsible to fulfil the agreement.” “I think that elections and the lack of financial stability won’t serve anyone in Israel,” added Gantz. Notwithstanding the two leaders’ public comments, the ‘state budget’ issue is a serious matter. Should a budget not be agreed, Israel could be heading towards another general election, a fourth in 19 months. The Knesset will automatically dissolve if it does not pass a budget by August 25th or amend legislation to allow for an extension. Elections would be held in November. Netanyahu would remain interim Prime Minister as agreed in the coalition agreement. Budget talk has escalated recently,

Finance Minister Yisrael Katz confirmed last week he will bring a one-year budget to the cabinet this week. He reportedly said, “We cannot agree to a situation in which there is a budget only for the High Holidays. The Israeli economy will not be able to recover without economic security for 2021.” Gantz, commenting on the budget issue, reportedly said a fourth election would be “national irresponsibility”. “I refuse to believe that there is any person in the country who can imagine holding elections,” he said. It has also been reported that Netanyahu prefers the one-year option as it would enable him to end the coalition early and remain in post as agreed in the unity deal. Ultra-Orthodox parties want both main parties to reach a compromise to secure funding for religious communities and schools. A recent Israel Hayom illustrates that Likud would win 33 seats, Yesh Atid-Telem 17, Joint List 16, Blue and White 12, Yamina 12, Shas 9, UTJ 8 Yisrael Beiteinu 8. Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc would hold a 62-seat majority. Political jockeying in Israel is the norm but this issue is a hot topic that needs resolving as the budget deadline is looming this month.

Williamson slams CAA, EHRC and Tories BY ADAM MOSES Former Labour MP Chris Williamson has published a controversial article and video titled ‘Unmasking the EHRC’. The disgraced MP takes a swipe at the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism and Equality and Human Rights Commission in relation to the Conservative Party within his conspiracy theory rhetoric. Williamson, suspended several times before running as an Independent in the 2019 General Election where he lost his deposit, claims that in recent years the EHRC’s “lack of independence” has led to its purpose being “subverted in order to attack the British Left, Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters”. He also asserts that the number of alleged cases of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party are “miniscule” and are clearly “exaggerated as part of a pernicious smear campaign” against Corbyn and his supporters. Williamson has historically made a plethora of provocative comments about Jews, Zionists and anti-Semitism. He concludes, “It seems pretty clear that the Commission lacks independence, is institutionally racist, and has been abusing its legal mandate

by attacking the Official Opposition. In our view, the Commission’s conduct played a leading role in derailing (Jeremy) Corbyn’s leadership, and in legitimising a McCarthyite smear campaign that only gets more menacing by the day. It would appear that, far from being an ‘equalities watchdog’, the EHRC has become a right-wing attack dog. “ Regarding Williamson’s brazen comments, CAA noted, “Such comments are in line with Williamson’s tradition of calling attempts to address anti-Semitism in the Labour Party “smears”, thereby accusing Jews of acting in bad faith when they complain about anti-Jewish racism. “Williamson’s particular interest in the EHRC is due to the full statutory investigation into anti-Semitism in the Labour Party launched by the independent body in May 2019 following a formal referral and detailed

legal representations from CAA. “He believes that the EHRC has become part of the ‘smear campaign’, although he seems conflicted as to whether this is because it is staffed or manipulated by “racists” and “Zionists” or is simply doing the bidding of the Conservative Party.” CAA continued, “Williamson accuses the EHRC of racism and inappropriate closeness to the New Labour government in its early years and now the Conservative government. Both claims, CAA note, are an attempt by the far-left to undermine the EHRC in advance of its report on Labour anti-Semitism.” Williamson described CAA as an “anti-Corbyn, pro-Israel outfit” and asserts its chief executive Gideon Falter has form in using anti-Semitism as a “weapon against critics of Israel”. days. They are believed to be on reconnaissance operations. The IDF remains on high alert. Tensions have increased since an Israeli airstrike killed a Hezbollah terrorist in Syria last month. A rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel in a separate incident. The Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted the rocket. There were no injuries but several vehicles were damaged in Sderot. In response, IAF jets targeted Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip including a concrete manufacturing site used for underground tunnels. The incident came shortly after a change in command of the Gaza Division. Brig. Gen. Eliezer Toledano reportedly said at his leaving ceremony, “The leaders of the terrorist organisations, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, pursued a strategy of intimidation and panic, firing rockets and mortar shells aimed at Israeli citizens. “Hamas does not care about the children of the Gaza Strip. They must stop manufacturing rockets and use pipes to build proper water and sewage infrastructure for their children. They must stop sowing launchers and harvest rockets and sow wheat and harvest grain.” Limited. Bristol University academic, David Miller, suspended from Labour before quitting, is director of the project. CAA noted, “Williamson, seemingly under the tutelage of Dr Miller, seems to believe that there is a “Zionist movement” in which some Jewish organisations are “formal member(s)” and some are not. One would have to excavate the over-extended minds of Williamson and Dr Miller to discover how an organisation is able to join this movement and what, other than supposedly controlling British politics and targeting Muslims, the movement does. “While Williamson’s offensive ignorance of the Jewish community is entirely unsurprising, Dr Miller parades his as academic research, and Bristol University appallingly continues to tolerate his doing so.” A CAA spokesman concluded, “Williamson destroyed his political career by backing anti-Semites within the Labour Party and claiming that they were merely the victims of a ‘witch hunt’ which he likened to the oppression of East German citizens by the Stasi. Now, fearing that his apologism for and defence of anti-Semites is about to be fulsomely unmasked by the EHRC, he has launched this unhinged attack claiming that the EHRC is in fact run by a ‘Zionist’ conspiracy on behalf of the Conservative Party, even attacking our charity as we are the complainant in the EHRC’s investigation. “This latest attack contains no interesting revelations about the EHRC, but it does open a fascinating window into the deranged conspiracy-theory-addled mind of Williamson.”

Millions of flu vaccine ordered as Covid cases stabilise BY DAVID SAFFER Coronavirus cases have stabilised but preparations are underway for a mass flu vaccination campaign starting next month. Healthcare providers Clalit and Maccabi Health Services have begun plans to manage seasonal flu cases in the midst of a pandemic spike in the winter. Options for the Health Ministry to approve include drive-in facilities at clinics. With a possibility of global vaccine shortages citizens with underlying health conditions will be first to be inoculated. Clalit have reportedly ordered two million vaccines, double the normal amount. Maccabi are expecting 1.2 million vaccines, 600,000 have to date been approved. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed this week that the government was examining various options for vaccines. “The signs are encouraging but it’s too early to tell,” he reportedly said. “We want Israel to have access to such inoculations when they become available. Medical teams and at-risk populations will be first to receive them, then followed by the rest of the population.” Latest Health Ministry data shows there are 1,689 new coronavirus cases with 569 fatalities. Israeli military’s coronavirus taskforce, meantime, officially have taken the helm in the battle against a second wave of the deadly virus. The ‘Alon’ Coronavirus Command Centre in Ramla headed by Brig. Gen. Nissan Davidi will provide manpower to aid testing and epidemiological investigations of patients. Coronavirus czar Prof. Ronni Gamzu presented a nationwide project last week. “Our goal is that the procedure of identifying the coronavirus carrier, beginning the isolation and concluding the epidemiological investigation would take up to 36 hours,” Home-Front Command chief Maj. Gen. Uri Gordin reportedly said. “We have learned from countries like Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea how to operate. In a short time, we will have about 2,000 people who will take test samples and take part in various missions.” “Local authorities have not been included enough in the fight against the virus,” added Gordin. “Now, that will change.” The command centre uses military technology to sort data from HMOs, Magen David Adom and the Health Ministry. “We need to increase transparency visà-vis the citizen in order to equip him for the fight,” Gordin reportedly explained. “This is done by providing the public with an updated and clearer picture, alongside more effective awareness campaign.” Gordin added, “We want to reach winter

with a rate of 3% infection rate and not 8% as it is today. Only then will we control the pandemic.” Over 400,000 Israelis were in quarantine last month including 224,000 following phone tracing by Shin Bet Security Agency. Around 100,000 Israelis self-quarantine as a result of government announcements. “We are talking about an astronomical number of people in quarantine and every day that we do not reduce the number of days in isolation costs the country vast amounts of money,” Zvi Hauser Hause, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense committee chair, reportedly said. Netanyahu has backed financial grants for Israeli citizens in upcoming Jewish festivals. “We do not rest for a moment,” Netanyahu reportedly said. “We will bring forth more and more plans, more and more money for Israeli citizens and businesses to kickstart the economy.” Netanyahu noted the biennial state budget that could affect the economy from recovering. “We must twig the meaning of approving a biennial budget,” he explained. “It means we’ll have to deal with substantial financial cuts. This is the exact opposite of what should be done. This is not the time for cuts, this is the time to allot funds to the people.” Netanyahu added, “We must continue for the welfare of the citizens of Israel, to open the education system, to transfer much-needed funds to the healthcare system – we’ll achieve this with an immediate budget.” The Knesset’s coronavirus cabinet, meantime, has discussed instigating

measures in ‘red’ areas with high rates of infection. They include Beitar Illit, Modiin Illit, Elad and a number of Arab towns. ‘Orange’ areas have moderate rates of infection. They include Jerusalem, Bnei Brak and Petach Tikvah. In related news, Concern has increased over redundancies in independent (non-governmental) hospitals due to the pandemic. “The government’s conduct is endangering hospital’s capabilities to deal with the coronavirus pandemic,” Dr. Michael Halberthal of the Hospital Directors Forum reportedly noted. Haifa’s Rambam Medical Centre chief executive added, “Unless immediate steps are taken, we will have no choice but to reduce the number of staff of those on the front lines.” Dr. Zeev Feldman, Israeli Medical Association chairman, has warned the Finance Ministry about hospital deficits since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. A lack of non-essential operations, building expenses of intensive care units and protective measures for patients, medical staff and visitors has left a multi-million NIS deficit. A Knesset State Control Committee report revealed that hospitals had 16,302 beds to treat COVID-19 patients at the onset of the pandemic, in July there were 16,321 beds. Prof. Ofer Merin, Shaare Zedek Medical Center CEO, told MKs the situation was chaotic and wards are full. Medical teams had been moved from internal medicine departments to coronavirus wards. Only last-ditch talks with the government averted a national strike called for

by the National Association of Nurses over staff shortages in July. Netanyahu, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein and coronavirus taskforce chief Prof. Ronni Gamzu were cautiously optimistic at a stabilisation of coronavirus cases. Gamzu reportedly said, “The IDF is doing its job in every aspect, including education and understanding of what is happening in the Arab and ultra-Orthodox sectors. We are close to seeing a decline in cases. It is important to observe the rules and keep reducing infections. It depends on our discipline and cooperation. We want to get to the High Holy Days with Israel a ‘green’ country.” Discussions will continue within the coronavirus cabinet regarding future steps but Professor Eran Segal of Weizmann Institute is “cautiously optimistic” about the drop in the daily contagion rate. Prof. Segal reportedly said, “The public is behaving more responsibly, and in July, more restrictions on the number of people allowed to congregate in one place were imposed. This affected the rate of infections, but if we do not reduce the number of new cases, we may not be able to reopen the schoolyear on September 1.” He added, “I don’t think we have to impose anymore (restrictions) before we see a downward trend and if one continues, we may not have to impose any new restrictions. “It is not yet time for celebration and we have yet to see a real reduction in cases. We must reduce the number of infections before winter while we institute a mechanism to live with coronavirus.” Segal called for more testing and a better understanding of the deadly virus.

Netanyahu blasts media

Demonstrators outside Prime Minister Netanyahu’s residence

BY NATALIE ASH Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lambasted the media for “inflaming” protests regarding his handling of the coronavirus crisis in recent weeks. Demonstrators have also rallied regarding his corruption case calling for him to resign. Netanyahu described protestors “anarchists” and “leftists” out to topple “a strong right-wing leader”. Clashes have been peaceful but some have ended in arrests. “There has never been such a distorted mobilisation,” he said. Netanyahu accused the media of ignoring “unfettered incitement” and calls to “murder the Prime Minister and his family.” Netanyahu condemned violence but added that the protests were “breeding grounds for the virus”. Defence Minister Benny Gantz said protests must be allowed to take place. “The right to protest is the lifeblood of democracy and violence is the erosion of the foundation of democracy,” he said. Netanyahu’s rant came as a Jerusalem court ordered Netanyahu’s son, Yair, to

stop “harassing” organisers for six months and no longer publish their private addresses. Yair Netanyahu appeared at a Jerusalem court after tweeting names, addresses and phone numbers of key protesters. He also labelled demonstrators as “aliens” but later withdrew the comment. Israel’s leader denounced “all acts of violence and harassment” in a statement. Police arrested 12 protesters after an anti-government rally in Jerusalem on Sunday. Around 10,000 demonstrators gathered outside the official residence of Netanyahu on Saturday evening in Jerusalem. The demonstration was among smaller rallies in Tel Aviv and other cities. Ofer Shomer, commander of Israel Police’s Zion sector in Jerusalem, said most of the crowd acted in a “respectful way.” Around 200 people refused to leave the area. “We had to use appropriate force to disperse the crowd,” he noted. Demonstrators held Israeli flags stating “Crime Minister” and “Bibi Go Home” on the march. Likud issued a statement accusing two private TV stations of giving “free and endless publicity” to protesters and inflating gatherings.

Israeli ‘Air Force One’ grounded Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has grounded test flights of a new ‘Air Force One’ plane. Netanyahu, his successors and Israel’s president are to use it until further notice. Israel Aerospace Industries is renovating the plane close to Ben Gurion Airport but there has been criticism over its cost and

priority over the coronavirus pandemic. ‘Air Force One’ is a Boeing 767 airplane that arrived in Israel in 2016. Upgrades include advanced communications and defence systems. After many delays, the plane’s first test flight took place in November 2019 followed by another last February.

When Philosemitism Becomes Antisemitism BY JONATHAN HOFFMAN In late March 2019 Stephen Lamonby, 73, a parttime engineering lecturer at Solent University in Southampton, remarked to his new boss, Dr Janet Bonar, that people from different countries had become good at certain things owing to “high exposure”. When US-born Dr Bonar mentioned that her degree was in physics, Mr Lamonby lit up. Could she be Jewish? He had long admired what seemed to be a facility in Mathematics and Physics among Jews, witness the many refugees who joined the Manhattan Project, the programme that produced the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Mr Lamonby said that Jewish people had “a particular gift” for the subject and he asked Dr Bonar if she was by any chance Jewish? He was horrified at her response to his perfectly innocent question. She took offence and called Mr Lamonby a racist!

He also said: “I have a soft spot for young black males. I do think that they are underprivileged and many [are] without fathers et cetera [and] need all the help they can get.” (He told me that he has spent extra unpaid time coaching two Nigerians and a Latvian student). Dr Bonar reported him to the University Administration. He was put through their disciplinary procedure and unceremoniously sacked in June 2019 (he was escorted out of the building in front of his students by three HR staff). Mr Lamonby was sacked for expressing admiration for Jews! What more horrifying example could there be of the woke lunacy to which British academia has succumbed? If someone asked YOU innocently if you were Jewish, would you take offence? There is nothing in the least bit ‘offensive’ about saying that different peoples have different talents. Do Italians not make the best pizza? Neither is there anything offensive about saying either that Jews are clever or that Jews are good at Maths and Physics. It isn’t a stereotype because Mr

Stephen Lamonby

Mr Lamonby was sacked for expressing admiration for Jews! What more horrifying example could there be of the woke lunacy to which British academia has succumbed? Lamonby was obviously not claiming that EVERY Jew is good at Maths or Physics. Neither is it derogatory – the opposite. We’re proud of our achievements! It was simply a statement of fact: although Jews account for less than 0.2% of the world’s population they have won at least 20% of all Nobel Prizes, including 56 winners of the Physics Prize – nearly half the total. How about Mr Lamonby’s comment about young black males? Family breakdown fuels poverty. In the US only 44% of black children have a father in the home. It’s little different in the UK. Why on earth should it be taboo to say this, particularly in a university conversation? Appallingly at an Employment Tribunal in June this year Judge CH O’Rourke rejected Mr Lamonby’s case. But the judgment is bizarre. The Judge writes ‘I am not permitted to substitute my judgment for that of the employer’, citing section 98 of the Employment Rights Act. That’s nonsense. Section 98 says he can ‘determine whether the dismissal is fair or unfair’, depending on whether the employer acted ‘reasonably or unreasonably’ and ‘in accordance with equity and the substantial merits of the case’. And what you don’t read in the Judgment is that the Judge often took the role of Defence Counsel. He told Angus Gloag

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

6 AUGUST 2020

(Mr Lamonby’s barrister) that he was being too aggressive. He accused Mr Lamonby of giving ‘evasive’ testimony. Mr Lamonby told me what was behind that comment. Having regard to his age the Judge asked him if he was ‘part of the Brexit generation’, with the intimation (which he took) that he was a bigoted Brexit voter. Mr Lamonby was so taken aback that he didn’t know how to respond – so he was marked down as ‘evasive’! Hmmm … So the Judge was (i) ageist (ii) assumed the political affiliation of a claimant (iii) assumed that all Brexit voters are racist. I have reported the Judge for these appalling comments. (Google reveals four recent cases where this Judge’s decisions have gone to Appeal. In three of them it is stated that he made an error of law). Perhaps the most convoluted argument of the Judge is his reasoning why it is offensive to remark to a Jew that Jews are talented at physics. Get this: he said (I paraphrase) that they might take the comment to mean that they are so innately talented at Physics that they do not need to do any work – and if they have worked hard, this would demean their efforts. Seriously, Judge O’Rourke? Mr Lamonby has submitted a request for an Appeal. He is obviously no racist and how dare Solent University suggest otherwise. He is simply a very dedicated teacher who is sorely missed by his students (he says ‘Knowledge not passed on, is knowledge lost’). Many of us spoke out about genuine antisemitism in the Labour Party. We were accused of fabricating antisemitism in order to prevent the election of Corbyn. Here is a case where antisemitism IS being fabricated (denouncing someone for saying that Jews are talented at Physics). If we do not call out fake antisemitism, we risk losing credibility when we call out ¬the genuine article. (How ironic that when it comes to genuine antisemitism, Solent University is woefully lacking - it has not even adopted the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism!). Mr Lamonby must be given a public apology so that he is not stigmatised as a ‘racist’. He must be given compensation and offered his job back. The compensation must reflect the fact that he is unlikely to wish to return to Solent. Nearly 1000 people have signed my Petition: http://chng.it/F5SRgx2D If you agree that Mr Lamonby is the victim of injustice - Please sign too! Side by Side summer fun Side by Side has delivered a four-day summer programme for pupils during the school holidays. The Stamford Hill special needs school has reduced provisions due to Covid-19 restrictions but trustees are providing support to pupils and families in exceptional times. In line with the government guidance and social distancing rules, activities on offer included arts and crafts, messy play, cooking, visits from ‘David The Magician’,

football, walks and play in the park alongside the school. Davening each day also continued for pupils in attendance. Throughout the global pandemic, Side by Side has taken every necessary precaution to ensure pupils, families and staff remain supported at all times. “We remain committed to supporting our pupils and their families in any way that we can through these uncertain times,” said Gerald Lebrett, Side by Side headteacher.

Kisharon Zoom on Tisha b’Av

Kisharon marked Tisha B’Av with a programme which ran across the whole of adult services including: Day Opportunities, Supported Living, College students as well as inviting those who attend Langdon College too, to join and to commemorate Tisha B’Av – the saddest day in the Jewish calendar. Everyone received a Three Weeks booklet via the post created by Kisharon in preparation for the day, with explanations of the laws and customs of the three weeks, nine days and Tisha B’Av itself, as well as a picture of the Kotel to decorate plus an easy read letter for Tisha B’Av. Aviva Braunold, Kisharon Vocational College Manager comments, “The purpose of the day was to create a meaningful experience for the people we support to commemorate Tisha B’Av in a practical sense that is relatable to all. We felt it was very important to have offered a full programme to mark this significant date in the Jewish calendar. We created the programme to incorporate different aspects of Tisha B’Av: the beginning of the day was about sadness and in the afternoon, we moved onto comfort and hope showing how we can rebuild. It was a really special day and I feel very privileged to have been part of such a meaningful experience.” The programme began with Davening with Rabbi Neuman who later showed a video on Tisha B’Av explaining the day. Rabbi Beni then introduced the day with a short video about the meaning and reasons for

Tisha B’Av and the people we support were invited to share their thoughts and feelings about the day. Comments from students included, “It was sad that the Beis Hamikdosh was destroyed because people weren’t nice to each other. If we are kind, we can help to rebuild it”, another person said, “I always pay people complements to tell them how nice they look and another reflected on the day including, “saying good morning to people makes them happy – that’s why we can’t greet people on Tisha B’Av, but we can do this if they say it to us so we don’t embarrass them”. Kinnos – Hebrew poems/psalms were read out on tragedy and loss followed by Mincha and an opportunity to put on tefillin and say Tefillos, prayers together. During the afternoon participants took part in an art and craft session creating their own brick using a tissue box and writing on it a kind deed that someone has done for them or visa versa. Kisharon plan to collect each of the bricks and build an art installation wall in the College, symbolising how, through kindness and working together, we will help to create a new Beis Hamikdosh, Holy Temple. Despite the fact that we are all in different places, we can still come together in unity and create something beautiful together. The day concluded with reflective songs about the Beis Hamikdosh led by Rabbi Neuman.

Around the Jewish World in 613 Seconds Rabbi Yoni Golker recently concluded his video series titled ‘Around the Jewish World in 613 Seconds!’ which has garnered over 100,000 views in total on Facebook and YouTube. The series featured interviews with people from different Jewish communities in countries around the world, including Nigeria, Mexico, Australia, Thailand and more. Rabbi Golker created this project with the aim of learning about and exploring what it is like to be a Jew in different places in the world. Through each of the 20 episodes, viewers were able to learn about the lifestyle of Jewish individuals around the globe, as well as what Jewish life is like in their cities.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

The series followed a wide range of other interviews Rabbi Golker has conducted during lockdown with people including Chief Rabbis, communal leaders, politicians, philanthropists, celebrities, lords and ladies, musicians, artists, educators and business leaders. Rabbi Golker said: “Four and a half months ago, I embarked on a project to help engage with the community during these trying times. I saw it as a primary role of a community Rabbi to raise the spirits, particularly of those who were isolated during the pandemic. Thanks to the United Synagogue for partnering with me and thanks of course to all the viewers who tuned in!”

World Mizrachi campaign defies covid-19 to reach $4.8 m The World Mizrachi 48-hour Emergency Campaign held July 27-28, reached a staggering $4.8 million, more than four times it’s expected target. This Mizrachi umbrella campaign was initiated on behalf of 50 institutions in Israel, spanning the Torah spectrum. An incredible 24,700 donors worldwide contributed. The monies raised will support student scholarships and strengthen yeshivot and seminaries at a time when Covid-19 threatened their very existence. Part of the campaign’s success is that it releases 3:1 matching funds for hundreds of student scholarships from the MASA Israel Journey, a joint venture of the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Israeli government. “We are deeply humbled by this global

A fine selection of whiskys from Youth Aliyah

On the evening of Thursday 9th July, Youth Aliyah Child Rescue hosted a Virtual Whisky Tasting event live on Zoom. With the number of attendees reaching four times the anticipated amount of participants, the evening was full of cheer, good humour and insight into the art of whisky appreciation. Youth Aliyah Child Rescue Trustee and event organiser, Anton Curtis commented: “With many connoisseurs referring to whisky as the ‘water of life’, it makes perfect sense that Youth Aliyah Child Rescue – a charity dedicated to enabling some of Israel’s most at risk young people to live their best lives – should have hosted

this very special online whisky tasting experience. From whisky beginners to the more accomplished drinkers in the virtual room, all the participants laughed and learnt a lot, at the same time as helping to support the provision of vital services for vulnerable young people.” Luckily for those who appreciate a good whisky, the only thing virtual about this event was the masterclass provided online, by an industry expert. In advance of the event, a diverse selection of five exceptional whiskies were hand-delivered to participants in a gift box, complete with delicious chocolates and Youth Aliyah Child Rescue notebook and pen.

Expansion of relationship and consent sessions for Jewish students Jewish Women’s Aid, University Jewish Chaplaincy and the Union of Jewish Students, have come together to bring consent and healthy relationships education to more Jewish students on campus and to professional teams working with Jewish students. JWA will now work with student groups to expand its already established Safer Dating programme at UK universities. Safer Dating was launched in 2016 and brings relevant and engaging relationships education to 16-25 year-olds across the community, delivering sessions in schools, on campuses, in youth movements and other settings for Jewish young people. University Jewish Chaplaincy and UJS, have offered to work with the community’s domestic abuse and sexual violence support service, to help reach more students and other relevant professionals, starting at the beginning of the new academic year. The groups are collaborating to improve and expand the signposting around sexual violence and education on healthy relationships on campus, as well as working on ways to deliver educational content and sessions in the pandemic context. CEO of JWA, Naomi Dickson, said, “What has come to light at St Andrews is sadly not a surprise to us, as an organisation that supports women and girls every day. The sessions we are already offering receive very positive feedback and allow young Jewish men and women to take time to think about the critical issues of consent and healthy relationships. We are delighted to be working together with University Jewish Chaplaincy and UJS to increase the reach of this programming and jointly develop new opportunities

to engage with Jewish students on these issues.” CEO of University Jewish Chaplaincy, Sophie Dunoff, said, “Unfortunately we know that our community and campuses are not immune to issues around sexual violence and abuse. Our Rabbis and Rebbetzens have been trained by JWA to ensure they can help support and signpost students on campus effectively and we are grateful for their expertise and guidance. We will continue to work with UJS and J-Socs around the country making sure that students can access training, information and receive support when they need it most.” President of UJS, James Harris said, “Support for Jewish students’ experiences of sexual violence is absolutely vital, but giving students the tools and foresight to protect themselves and their fellow students before the support is required is the best way to start along the road to eliminate this serious issue faced by the general student population, and of course by Jewish students too. The coming together of these three key organisations working in this area is absolutely vital for educating around these very serious issues, bringing expert advice and guidance as well as the leading educators on the topics of healthy relationships and sexual violence to the palm of the hands of Jewish students. The relationship with JWA and Chaplaincy will ensure that Jewish students are well-informed on how to mitigate the risk of sexual violence and domestic abuse occurring within our community and in the wider society.” The initiative is backed by the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council.

Having a great time at Tribe’s Staycation

Tribe’s Staycation saves the summer Years 4, 5 & 6 have been enjoying their first week of Tribe’s Summer Staycation. Though many people’s summer plans have changed or been cancelled this year, Tribe came to the rescue for 240 children with their new Staycation day camps, which have consisted of outdoor activities, arts & crafts, games, sports and more. The day camps have been taking place in Bushey and Finchley shuls, and are running until mid-August to ensure that children don’t miss out on the opportunity to have a fun-filled summer camp experience. The Staycation has been met with great feedback from participants, such as Evie, 10, who said: “I have really enjoyed camp so much, it has been such a fun week and the graffiti activity was so cool,” as well as

Fraser, 9, who said: “The inflatables and the graffiti activities were really fun and the leaders make all the activities even better. I’ve had such a fun week playing games.” The camp leaders were equally as enthusiastic, with Kinloss (Finchley United Synagogue) leader Toby saying: “This has been an incredible Jewish experience for the participants, we have come out of lockdown and been able to socialise whilst engaging in Jewish life.” Tamara Jacobson, Head of Operations at Tribe, said: “Despite all of the challenges posed by Covid-19, we are delighted to have been able to run a safe and enjoyable summer camp for so many of our young people.”

Project 150: a Mill Hill Batmitzvah Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet and Rebbetzin Chanie Schochet of Mill Hill United Synagogue recently celebrated the Batmitzvah of their daughter, Sari. Sari Schochet had always been planning to share her Bat Mitzvah with the Mill Hill community that she was born and grew up in. While Covid-19 saw any party plans cancelled, she and her mother, Rebbetzin Schochet, came up with a different idea. In addition to a Zoom Bat Mitzvah which 400 people tuned in to, they baked 300 challot together and had them distributed in special Shabbat bags to the housebound members of their community. Chanie Schochet said: “Sari was born and bred in the Mill Hill community. Her Batmitzvah coincided with the United Synagogue’s 150th anniversary so we decided to call it Project 150 and make 300 challot to distribute to 150 members.” Sari added, “It wasn’t a party but it was a much more meaningful way for me to celebrate my Batmitzvah.”

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON The end of last week saw the sentencing of Andrew Harper's killers and there were no smiles on their faces, as Mr Justice Edis sentenced the three teenagers. Henry Long was jailed for 16 years for the manslaughter of Andrew Harper, and his accomplices Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole, each received 13 years. MP John Howell, from PC Harper's constituency, said he will ascertain whether the sentences are ‘unduly lenient’ and, if so, whether they could be extended at the Court of Appeal. He said: "The sentences handed down today…. are very severe. The question is 'does the punishment fit the crime?' " The Mikado and Front Line both sayeth - NO. That judgement was a feeble ray of sunshine at the end of a Jacqueline Curzon decidedly stressful day. I began my PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY Friday with a journey to the Royal Free for my oncology update. I had the brainwave of driving there, thinking 'yes I can make this in half an hour,' given the reduced traffic on the roads, but drove mainly because it was to be the hottest day of the year. As I approached the Hendon flyover I wondered why my car was struggling to make even 30 mph, and remember facetiously muttering: ‘hmmm, 0 - 20 in 60 seconds,’ or something like that, but I didn't know what was waiting round the of them, none of which my car wanted to next corner. [note to self, NEVER consider. Never, ever have I experienced a insult your car, when you're out on the 4x4 unwilling to even contemplate going road] Before I could even get to the up a hill, instead standing its ground like Finchley Road my car became unrespona toddler threatening a tantrum. It was sive, and I was struggling, with my foot incredibly scary, but I eventually made it flat on the pedal, bravely trying to make to my place of safety, readily accessible 15 miles an hour. Plainly something was afoot. Anyway, I took the nearest left turn, to a tow truck. This was already past my appointment time, and when I finished up Frognal and tried to weave my way up at the hospital, I sat for another 2 hours towards Hampstead, at an incomprehenwaiting for the recovery truck - all this in sible 5 mph, heading to Haverstock Hill, a scorching 40 degree heat. The car-diac for level parking near the hospital. and then a decision about restarting chemo. For this, I will need a new picc line inserted, as the last one managed to spring a leak. Most people require only one picc line, but I'll be queuing up for my 5th, and take my word for it, it's not a walk-in-the-park procedure. Imagine being stung on the upper arm by a killer wasp (local anaesthetic), then having a skipping rope (catheter) pushed through your veins, via a guide wire, across your chest and into your heart. My vasculature is apparently quite tricky, and on several occasions the procedure room was left looking like the bloodied barber’s surgery of Sweeney Todd. Such fun. Scotland's favourite minister is back in the press this week after being criticised by the Statistics Watchdog for making unsubstantiated comparisons about coronavirus rates [Scotland vs England]. Nicola Sturgeon claimed that the virus was 5 times more prevalent in England, and was using these statistics to justify her controversial plan to enforce a quarantine for those from south of the border. The Director-General for regulation in the OSR slated Ms Sturgeon for this comparison, which was ‘not backed up by any sound data,' and the unflattering review came on the day she was named the fifth most eloquent leader in the world. Doubtless this will further fuel her anti-English sentiment, cloaked in her tartan eloquence. It’s not always what’s on the outside of the tin which counts though, is it? I was quite upset to hear Matt Hancock ratify his plan for virtual surgeries. I would add that 'virtual' doctors will not be massively popular, and many patients will suffer enormously for that decision. I wouldn't be surprised if dozens of surgeries across the country are seeing only a handful of patients each day, whilst the office staff catch up with paperwork (not wearing PPE obviously), all in a relatively stress-free environment. No patients to come and distract you, or be demanding at the desk, with the foot traffic now negligible. GPs can then make their phone or video calls from the safety of their offices, doubtless missing some crucial or critical symptoms in patients whose lives they ultimately won't saVe. But of course we’re ‘keeping saFe from Covid.’ Consider this, your GP with a list of 5000 patients might now be seeing 5 or 6 a day, where normally he might be seeing 6 an hour (I'm guessing), it's also an economic consideration. What about the patients that he won't see? Even if he makes a tsunami of phone calls, all running tickety-boo, where is the practitioner-patient partnership? What about the patient who claims he wants the appointment for stress or insomnia, but really needs to mention the

relentless, blinding headaches or dreadful stomach pain? They will get a quick call, and likely not mention the ‘biggie.’ I recently took a call from a consultant whilst standing at a noisy checkout. The call was late, so I didn't feel up to rescheduling, but I then couldn't mention some pressing issues because it was all so very public. Know what I mean? I feel like I'm in a position to be able to comment on this, because I wouldn't have gone to my GP - even now - because I don't feel ill. Others might feel less well, and still not go. This is where we experience the fascinating characteristic of the Stiff Upper Lip, and for that reason alone I won't subscribe to the GP 'one phone call fits all.' I think that call should be for rudimentary or obvious cases, and not if a patient wishes to opt out. Now back to masks for a moment. I was rather tickled to read that Boris Johnson is going to have the police out on the streets, enforcing mask wearing. They don't even patrol our streets to uphold law and order, to protect citizens from snatch and grabbers, violent assaults, to intervene in shop burglaries or to help if you're lost. But by golly, the Old Bill will be out there telling YOU off and issuing you with a fine. “Excuse me sir, I’m apprehending you for dropping your mask on the roadway!" or, "Where IS your mask, I ask?” Hahaha! And whilst we're on the comedy platform, who's going to stop you wearing a mask in the bank, at the post office or in the jewellers, and others going in with a pocket firearm to hold it up? If you’re wearing some fancy shmancy mask, and maybe a shield [or sporting a handy jack-hammer], you might get away with a free postage stamp or a diamond or two. I don't think an enforcement lark will help make your finest hour Boris, especially when you're now being lambasted for nominating your own brother for a peerage. It’s not like it's just an invitation to Chequers, or a titled ‘goodbye’ gift from you. How can politicians hold their heads up and argue that it’s NOT all about cronyism? As journalists we have to be balanced, like Charles Moore (also peer promoted, but more deservedly) so I have to tell you - to give your brother an award, is a step in the wrong direction. We know Jo-Bro served as an MP for 9 years, and quit because he was broigus about Brexit. What exceptional service to Queen and country has he actually done to merit such an unbelievable honour? Bo-Jo, who will be next? None would grudge you an elevation to the Lords, when you complete your term, but awards must be earned. On that final note, our congratulations to Signor Giuseppe Paterna, Italy's oldest student. Aged 96, he's just been awarded a degree in History and Philosophy from the University of Palermo. Well earned! Bel pensatore. Fino a 100. Affettuosamente il tuo Jacqueline x To follow Jacqueline’s journey blog {Yocheved bas Sara} please go to https:// whenallissaidanddone.home.blog

Tu b’Av may be your lucky day for love! BY DENISE PHILLIPS Having completed ‘the three weeks’ and mourning of Tisha B’Av, we come to Tu B’Av, the 15th Av, which falls on the 5th August this year. It is a joyous event, which has a focus on love for Hashem, the Torah, and one another. Tu B’Av is the final Jewish holiday of the year before Rosh Hashanah and it has a slightly unusual history. According to the Talmud, during temple times, Tu B’Av marked the beginning of the grape harvest, whilst Yom Kippur marked the end of the harvest. It was also the day when the unmarried girls of Jerusalem dressed in white and danced in the vineyards. On this day, girls can approach young men and ask for their hand in marriage – a little like 29th February. Nowadays, it is a popular day to get married on and in Israel it is customary to send a bouquet of red roses to the one you love. Romantic songs are played on the radio, love is in the air and parties are held all over the country. Going to parties for singles and matchmaking events are increasingly popular all over the world. However, it is still true that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach so here are some tips for a great dinner date.

Cooking dinner for someone takes effort so ensure you have the time to prepare and make something you are familiar with. Testing out new creations on a date night might be a disaster! Find out what your date likes to eat or drink and check whether they have any food allergies, so your meal is not interrupted by a visit to A&E! Also try to avoid extremely messy foods and ones that stick in your teeth, such as spinach, spaghetti or corn on the cob! If your date arrives early don’t be afraid to invite them into the kitchen to help with the final touches to the meal. Cooking together is a wonderful way of getting to know someone – it provides a distraction which can help you get to over any initial awkward moments. If you are looking to find love, Date On A Plate, (events for Jewish singles) celebrates 18 years of dating success. Presently working online using a format with Zoom; Sunday night is the place to meet someone special. From age 25- 70 with a 10-year age span, it’s an informal way to connect safely during these Covid times. www.dateonaplate.com Above is a delicious recipe for a romantic meal for two. Seabass with pistachio nut crumbs. Serve with mashed or roughly chopped new potatoes and a salad.

Motoring: Fiat 500X Travel is returning and MALCOLM GINSBERG will have an update in a few weeks time. The gates have opened but not the floodgates, which is needed, and this includes Israel. In the meantime the new monthly car reviews continue. Malcolm is a member of the Guild of Motoring Writers.

Interior

Fiat 500x

The Fiat 500X is a fraud. But a nice one. There have been several great cars in history whose heritage is outstanding and have been reincarnated as an entirely new product. The Fiat 500 and Fiat 500X is but one example, and you have the mini v MINI, but Fiat wins as the original car is still with us, in much reinvigorated form. Not so the mini, although from time to time look-a-likes do appear, often using original components. The VW Beetle cannot be added to this list as the Mexican-built New Beetle cheated in having the engine in the front and was very much a VW Polo of the time with a Beetle style body. Nobody was fooled and in July 2019 the ubiquitous VW was put out of its misery. The Fiat 500X made its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show and is best described as a subcompact crossover SUV. The term SUV (sports utility vehicle) usually means that the car has an energetic look about it. This description fits the 500X well, sitting just that little bit higher off the road than a normal saloon. It is front-wheel drive and is not really for off-the-road-use. The car was updated about 18 months ago and sells well. A completely restyled cockpit

features a new instrument cluster, with graphics that are easier to read, together with a contoured steering wheel which includes integrated radio controls. The Italians love to tinker.

The 500X has nothing in common with the Fiat 500, except for a few badges and one could argue, looks too. The Fiat 500 is tiny, a specialist town car available with a number of body styles, just about carrying four in a cramped box. It is popular for what it is. The Fiat 500X is a full five-seater with exceptionally wide opening doors and the higher driving position as already noted. It’s a four door car and getting to the back is easy too. The X is 4.269m (14ft) long and 1.796m (5ft 11in) wide. The 500 comes in at 3.571m (11ft 9in) by 1.627m (5ft 4in). The test car was a 1ltr turbocharged petrol-engined with a manual six-speed gearbox, perhaps a little notchy but offering a firm change. What is remarkable, and mentioning the mini again, we used to think the 1275cc British Leyland version was quick, a four-seater and 0-60 in 13 sec on a good day. This Fiat is 0-60 in under 11sec and is remarkably frugal in fuel, 50 to the gallon being easily obtainable, and with a decent noise level too. But you do have to use the gearbox and in town you are unlikely to get into top. With an 11m turning circle space is required for a 180deg change of direction, but you can’t have everything. My only other real gripe was the tiny tom-tom screen for navigating, with a neat turn indicator in the binnacle. When it comes to the screens use with the reversing camera the image was excellent but it was a struggle with the map. Fiat engineers need to look into. Most buyers will choose one of the frontwheel drive versions, although the Fiat is, nevertheless, available with an on-demand all-wheel drive system. The test car was a near the top-of-therange City Cross with 17in alloys, roof rails, cruise control, rear parking sensors, automatic climate control and a very good hill start assist. Pull up what is effectively a simple handbrake lever control, just behind the gearbox, and there is no

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

need to worry about rolling back. It is all automatic from that point onwards. Fiat’s Uconnect infotainment system was fitted and self-folding automatic exterior mirrors. As a safety feature traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed assist and lane keeping driving systems are standard on all versions. On a personal note I am not that keen on the raw garish painted metal front fascia, but that is the current trendy mood, so I can’t argue. The interior presentation throughout is high grade with quality mouldings with stylish seats, the rear centre one slightly recessed to give just that extra space. USB points front and back. The rear door sprung up with little effort exposing a flat floor easy to take the shopping out from. No electric closing with the grip point easy to spot and closing easily. The rear seats can fold down on a 60/40 basis. When it comes to driving the Fiat 500X was a real pleasure, maybe it is the sit-up view, but it handled very well in a stormy outburst and special precautions did not have to be taken. No leaning on roundabouts and the decent straight line performance already mentioned meant keeping up at the traffic lights was no problem. Press cars are normally very new but this one, with the special registration, felt very well put together with 15,000 miles on the clock. Little noise at 70 mph. Modern cars are very quiet and wind noise free. Prices for the Fiat 500X start from £16995 and the test car came in at £22,100 including £550 for the metallic blue paint exterior. The Fiat 500X is not going to win as a status symbol but if you are looking for a steady family thoroughly practical 4/5 seater it might just fit the bill. It is not a Fiat 500 but just as much fun. www.fiat.co.uk

ASK THE RABBI

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com LOOKING FOR MRS. RIGHT

Dear Rabbi I am 35 years old and can’t get married. Can you help me? It’s like I have no luck! Arthur Dear Arthur I’m sorry you’re struggling. But here’s a little piece of advice: With an attitude like ‘I have no luck,’ you’re never going to get anywhere. Every time you go out you’ll be immediately assuming the worst and will panic at every blip. Maintain a positive attitude and keep an open mind and I assure you, you will find the right one that much quicker. Don’t forget to send me an invitation.

WHAT’S IN A JEWISH NAME

Dear Rabbi Is Lenderman a Jewish name? Me and a friend keep arguing about its origins. It is known to come from the Lower Rhine since ancient times. But he says that it is Jewish and that “Lender” “Man” likely meant they were some kind of lenders or bankers. But when I ask other people with the same last name they reply it is German and has always been. My friend looked it up on the internet and sure enough found some people with the name who were Jewish. And now I am all confused. I even looked on HouseofNames.com and they even said it is German. My friend’s name is Friedman and he said it is Jewish/German and it even say it is a Jewish name, but Lenderman says German. What do you think? Lenderman Dear Lenderman Arguing with your friend

– searching the internet – what do I think? I think you have too much time on your hands. I really hope you don’t lose too much sleep over this (though I nearly dozed half way through the question). Hey, you’re Jewish and the name is yours – so consider it a Jewish name henceforth. And spend your time on more productive things.

spouses who were cheated on. In G-d’s world, when committing such a blatant violation, per the above criteria (i.e. disregarding an advance warning and indifferent to eye witnesses) then such a breach of trust is irredeemable other than through capital punishment; even if our politically correct world of laissez faire doesn’t buy in.

IS STONING BARBARIC

A COHEN CONUNDRUM

Dear Rabbi I understand that the biblical punishment for adultery was death by stoning, even if the adulterer never killed anyone. Although I do not condone adultery, I think that this punishment is extreme, because an adulterer is not necessarily a murderer and if he has been executed, he cannot repent. Daisy Dear Daisy Firstly, this was something that applied only in ancient times. Secondly, the criteria required was very specific. There needed to be a pre-warning and witnesses to the actual offence caused. As you will appreciate that in itself would be rare to come by. Thirdly, as to your distinction between murder and other offences, there are more ways than the obvious to commit murder. You can embarrass someone to the point where you kill their feelings hence our Sages consider it tantamount to murder. You can gossip about someone such that you kill their image and this too is tantamount to murder. You can also kill a relationship and destroy a person’s self esteem. I’ve seen the faces of inconsolable

Dear Rabbi This is the situation: A girl marries in a civil ceremony, then gets divorced (not a get) and now intends to marry again to somebody else in a Jewish ceremony. The new partner’s father is a Cohen. However the parents of the new partner married in a reform ceremony. What is the Halacha for this situation? Is she considered a divorcee such that she cannot marry a Cohen? Does the first civil marriage cancel that? Does the parent’s reform wedding ceremony have any impact on this situation? Will the couple still be able to have a traditional orthodox wedding? Michal Dear Michal If the father of the new partner is a Cohen then obviously so is the son, and as the wife to be was in a previous relationship, regardless of the fact that it was civil, that would render them unfit for marriage. They will therefore be unable to have a traditional orthodox wedding. However, it is worthwhile determining more about the parents’ original reform wedding. It remains a very real possibility that insofar as it took place outside of an

Orthodox framework that perhaps the mother was an ‘unsuitable’ spouse for a Cohen, hence they went that route. That then would mean that the son (the now potential new partner) has lost his formal status of priesthood and can therefore marry the woman in question.

BUY NOW, BURY LATER

Dear Rabbi A family friend is concerned about what will happen with her body when she passes away. She is not a member of a Shul and therefore has not paid any Burial rights. She has no money and neither do her children. In this instance, would she still be able to be buried in a Jewish cemetery? If she can be, who pays for it? Richard Dear Richard That would render her a met mitzvah where it would be incumbent upon the community to ensure a proper Jewish

THE “HEBREW BIBLE”

Dear Rabbi I am attempting to write an essay on: “The covenantal relationship between G-d and Israel is a central feature in the Hebrew Bible.” I was wondering if you can offer some insight. Can you recommend any reading? Suzi Dear Suzi I would recommend reading – the Bible! You’ll find that it’s all about G-d choosing Israel as His ‘first born son,’ and Israel in turn believing very much in a personal G-d who is every bit a part of each of their individual lives. PS: I’m never sure what’s meant by the “Hebrew Bible.” Is there any other?

Pirkei Avot We now meet the next character out of the pirkey avot star studded celebrity lineup, Antignos of Socho. He received the tradition from last week’s hero, Shimon Hatzadik. His pearls of wisdom have been made into a famous Shwecky song. ‘Al tihiyu cavadim hameshamshim et HaRav al menat lekabel perat... - don’t be like the servants who serve their master just to receive reward, rather do it without caring about your reward.’ In last week’s sedra of Vaetchanan, we saw in the first paragraph of Shema how Rashi points out that it is much better to

burial. But as you are aware of the concern now, something ought to be done – perhaps a discussion with a burial society – before any potential problems might emerge later.

Mishna 3 serve Hashem our of love then out of fear, even though you usually would progress from fear before reaching the level of love. Our mishnah takes this statement even further by telling us that love should be unconditional. The fact that Hashem rewards us is of no concern to the obvious brilliance of His creations that we are naturally obligated to constantly praise day by day and night by night. There is an obvious problem with Antignos’s statement, raised by the Maharal of Prague. How can we be told not to serve for reward when the Torah clearly tells us

on many occasions that there is great reward awaiting our mitzvahs. For example, for honouring one’s parents we are promised long life. The Maharal answers that the Torahs words don’t mean do a mitzvah because of reward rather that the natural consequence of doing a good deed is a certain reward. Nonetheless one shouldn’t be motivated purely by reward as one’s actions are then no longer lishmah. Antignos ends the Mishnah with one

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

more piece of sound advice. ‘Vehe moreh shamayim alehem- let the awe of heaven be upon you.’ After being told not to serve G-d for reward, or for fear, we are still urged to remember the fear that comes from the realisation that Hashem is living far away in the Heavens in the vastness of space, whist puny man only lives in this world, whilst still utterly dependent on the One Above. By remembering these vital lessons, we will live the ethical lives we are all capable of living.

Do all jews have stiff necks? BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN Recounting the sad episode of the egel disaster, Moshe reminds the Jews that they are a people of “keshei oref”- which literally translates as a stiff-necked people. This term, is employed four times in Ki Tisa, twice in Eikev, and numerous times throughout Tanach, generally referring to the character flaw of stubbornness or obstinacy. Though, typically, stubbornness is character defect, sometimes stubborn adherence to our convictions is crucial to a life of idealism. Classically, a stiff neck describes someone unwilling to change or transform an aspect of their life or their behavior. Changing course in life demands ‘turning our heads’ to consider a new idea or a new approach. Inability to turn our heads or to change our opinions is symbolized by the image of a stiff neck. In fact, in Chapter 48, Yeshaya is so frustrated by indifference to his constant warnings to the Jews, that he actually laments their “necks of iron” which aren’t just rigid but completely immovable. Stubbornness to personal change can stem from disproportionate self-confidence or from our comfort with the “familiar”. The Rambam describes stubbornness and resistance to moral input as a “blocker” of potential teshuva. Healthy growth is almost impossible once we have stopped listening and stiffened our necks against change. Beyond the stiffening of our necks against moral challenges, there is an additional connotation to the syndrome of ‘keshei oref’. Sometimes we actively turn our heads “away” from important values or experiences– flashing the back of our necks as we abruptly turn aside. Instead of ‘facing’ an experience and assimilating its consequences, we turn our backs and necks upon the past. Presumably, this type of turning away typifies Jewish behavior during the egel and warrants their designation as stiff-necked. By worshipping an idol, the Jews didn’t stiffen their necks against rebuke or moral correction. What angered G-d and frustrated Moshe was their sudden turning away from the glory at Sinai six weeks earlier. How could they so easily disregard the “face-to-face” communication they enjoyed with G-d, and swerve away to idol-worship. Sadly, human nature is fickle and cognitive dissonance compartmentalizes our experiences and creates ‘disconnect’. After moments of great inspiration, we foolishly and sometimes easily “turn our necks” elsewhere, turning our backs on the great moments and wandering. Sometimes

we stiffen our necks while blocking out moral input but other times actively turn our heads away, ridiculously ignoring experiences which once captured our full attention. However, despite the dangers of this trait, stubbornness can also be a positive quality. In his Sefer HaKuzari, Rebbi Yehuda Halevi asserts that G-d chose the Jews for two reasons. Firstly, we possess the unique ability to perceive prophecy and to respond to a supernatural and indiscernible world. Additionally, Jews were chosen because we are a people of uncanny resolve, not easily budged from mission or principles. Knowing that this historical calling would expose His proxies to hostility and even persecution, G-d selected a particularly stubborn and resilient people who would not buckle under the inevitable historical and religious pressure. Jews have outlasted anti-Semitism, in part, because we are stiff-necked. Our rabbis (Devarim Rabbah, Va’etchanan) attributed our long and storied tradition of martyrdom to our national obstinacy. Evidently, obstinate adherence to seminal ideas in the face of derision or disputation is a value. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between healthy intellectual obstinacy and unhealthy adherence to outdated ideas. Certainly, religious ideas are fundamentally immutable and should not be overhauled as new ideas are introduced into the human discourse. Religion is based upon “historical hierarchy”- ideas and laws established at earlier stages of history have authority over the ideas and behavior which emerge in successive generations. Those closer to the seminal moment of Sinai possess a clearer transmission and a more authoritative tradition. Ideas may be adjusted or refreshed but the core values remain unchanged. Obstinate preservation of religious truths is basic to our Masorah. However, ideas and opinions which lie outside the direct arena of religion and halacha are meant to be fluid and adjustable. In this arena, stubbornness to old, familiar ideas and the inability to pivot or adjust can cripple personal development. It is crucial to find people who can put our “heads on a swivel” – who can introduce fresh approaches as well as different perspectives upon old ideas to assure that our thoughts remain both emotionally deep and developmentally authentic, rather than rehearsed and formulaic. Too much inflexibility to outdated ideas hampers our developmental evolution. Furthermore, though obstinacy to

Sometimes we actively turn our heads “away” from important values or experiences– flashing the back of our necks as we abruptly turn aside. religious ideals is vital in preserving our foundational religious values, stubbornness is extremely harmful in personal relationships. Healthy relationships are based upon making difficult compromises and creating ‘room’ for the differing needs of another person. Obstinate people, less likely to compromise personal habits or needs are far more likely to struggle in relationship-building. Furthermore, every relationship includes feuds and disagreements and one of the secrets of a healthy relationship is the ability to apologize for even unintentional hurt. Stubborn people are often either too proud to apologize or oblivious to their role in the disagreement. Obstinacy and pride perpetuate disagreement rather than resolving them and enabling reconciliation. Beyond unhealthy stubbornness and obstinacy, there is an additional connotation of being stiff-necked. Classic stubbornness is the inability to change our minds and the inability to turn our heads “completely around” to encounter a totally different idea. Changing our opinion would be equivalent to a 180-degree swivel- which sometimes reflects honest experience. Sometimes, however, life asks us to slightly rotate our necks to gain

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

proportion and nuance even when retaining our previously held views. Too rigid a neck can impede these important “minor swivels” which typically lend subtlety and perspective to our opinions. Stiff-necked people remain very “frontal”, highly opinionated and oftentimes simplistic. Life is complex and people are complex and rarely can black and white positions capture the diversity of the human condition. Even those who aren’t stubborn, are often simplistic and non-nuanced in adopting views and opinions. Elastic necks are necessary to help us understand the validity of differing approaches to life. We inhabit a very polarized world and are becoming fanatical of black and white thought. The stiffer our necks, the more exclusive we believe our truths to be, and the less sensitive we are to the diversity of human experience. Religious truths demand inflexible necks, but interpersonal relationships and the process of forming opinions are better served by “supple necks” which are capable of both minor swivels as well as fuller rotations. Weekly Dvar Torah F R OM E R E TZ YISRAE L

Beware lest your heart grow haughty and you forget BY RABBANIT RACHELLE FRAENKEL The five books of Torah are filled with references to the root “zikaron” – memory, remembrance. G-d remembers, G-d commands to remember, people remember and do deeds to remember and to be remembered – so many things connected with memory. “Shichacha” – forgetfulness, is different. It is mentioned briefly in Bereishit, but in the books of the mitzvot – Shemot, Vayikra and Bamidbar – there is no mention of the root “shachach.” Not even one. Nothing. Until you get to Devarim. In Devarim, the words of the Living G-d are heard through the human instrument – the speech of Moshe. Almost all of Devarim is a transcript of the speeches that Moshe gave to the people during the last month of his life. And through this means, this anxiety – the fear of forgetting – is also expressed. A great anxiety that is also a simple truth. We are flesh and blood. Destined to forget. Compared to the lack of references in the previous three chumashim, Moshe

warns against forgetfulness 14 times in Devarim. In our parsha alone we are warned five times. Moshe describes the goodness of the Land of Israel and immediately recognizes the danger – there will be food, there will be good houses, cattle and silver and gold, and as a natural and inevitable result “beware lest your heart grow haughty and you forget” (Devarim 8:14). You have forgotten not only the commandments and the judgments, but also the personal G-d, intervening throughout history for you, who brings you out of a house of slaves, who leads you into the desert and brings you water from the rock in Chalamish. Moshe’s voice alternates between a stern warning to prevent forgetting – a difficult reality to imagine – and a prophecy of wrath describing the inevitable future to occur: If you forget the L-rd your G-d and worship idols, the fate of the nations I have destroyed from before you will be your fate – you will be lost from this land like them. In the words of George Santayana, “Those who are unable to remember the past are doomed to repeat it.”

The unbearable speed of forgetfulness that overwhelms us again and again – from Mount Sinai and throughout the journey to the Land – is described by Moshe as an almost inherent failure in humanity. Perhaps because of this, the Land of Israel, which is described at the beginning of the parsha as: “a good land, a land with streams and springs and fountains issuing from plain and hill” (Devarim 8:7), such that the imminent danger is to get fat and forget, is also described towards the end of the parsha as “the land is not like the land of Egypt” (Devarim 11:10). I could have left you in Egypt, where there was a river. A constant water source. A secure livelihood. I chose to bring you to the Land which “soaks up its water from the rains of heaven” (Devarim 11:11) – a Land that depends on the falling of rain. Nothing is certain. You will never feel your vulnerability, your fragility, your dependence. Trust G-d and do not forget. The close relationship with G-d, the uncertainty, will help you remember. These are days of Corona. We have lost a lot of stability. The ability to predict, the

ability to plan. Health, economic, social and occupational uncertainty. Perhaps this vulnerability is more authentic to our human condition. As we search for the stability we have lost, we will stay a little in our Land of Israel, where we rely on rain for water to drink. The place where nothing is certain, and we hang on to the memory of the graces of the past and pray for the good that will befall us in the future. It is a sensitive and not entirely stable place, but it does not have the numbness of forgetfulness. It has the intimacy of needing, leaning, and knowing you are being seen because “It is a land which the L-rd your G-d looks after, on which the L-rd your G-d always keeps His eye, from year’s beginning to year’s end” (Devarim 11:12). A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE

The joys of parenting! RABBI GOODMAN A child’s innate ability to wind up his parents— even from such a young age— coupled with parents’ innate tendency to be wound up by their children— despite the parents’ ostensibly mature age— are two of creation’s unsolvable mysteries. However, from the outset, whether we understand it or not, children (bless them) are a constant challenge to their parent’s state of composure, level-headedness, and peace of mind. Unfortunately, there is no easy solution for maintaining self-control. To make things worse, the “flying off the handle” episodes, which inevitably create quite a scene, tend to stick in our minds more than the no-razzmatazz “staying on the handle” ones, leaving us to wonder when exactly we morphed from semi-decent human beings into hideous ogres. However, Hashem— the Creator of these mysteries— appears to have great

faith in our ability to discipline and instruct our children, metaphorically alluding to the way we discipline our own children in order to describe the way He disciplines His. As the Torah says in this week’s Parsha, “You should know in your heart that just as a father will chastise his son, so Hashem, your G-d, chastises you.” Rabbi Nissim of Girona— one of the last great Spanish medieval Talmudic scholars— explains the Torah’s metaphor, highlighting two distinct attributes of a father who chastises his son. Firstly, a parent will never administer a punishment commensurate to the child’s violation; it will inevitably be of a lesser degree. Secondly, a parent does not punish a child to make him suffer, rather to help him comprehend his erroneous ways and improve his overall conduct. Rabbi Nissim describes how these two attributes apply to Hashem’s method of chastising us. Hashem never punishes us with the punishment we truly deserve,

as King David writes in Tehillim (103:10), “He has not treated us according to our sins, nor repaid us according to our iniquities.” Furthermore, Hashem never punishes a person for the sake of inflicting retribution. Indeed, we learn from the Torah’s disdain for personal revenge (Vayikra 19:18) that punishment for its own sake bears no virtue. Divine justice serves to either help the wrongdoer improve his deeds or prevent others from emulating his ways. Among the numerous lessons Rabbi Nissim’s insight suggests, perhaps the most heartening one is Hashem’s testimony to our integrity as parents! Parental compassion and kindness are inbuilt— free of charge and ready to use (and probably the reason we get so easily wound up!) Although we might not always feel so compassionate and kind (as the ketchup splatters across the freshly painted walls,) ogres we are certainly not. Baruch Hashem, we have it on good authority

that we are best suited for the job. So, it is time for us to stop berating ourselves and instead embrace the wonderful opportunity Hashem has granted us. REWARD & PUNISHMENT

Our portion this Shabbat confirms (Deut. 11:13-15) that there will be a reward for a good deed and punishment for a transgression. The problem is that it does not always work out that way. A good person does not make the receipt of a reward his or her motivation but expects that a reward will happen. Sometimes all they get is the opposite. One of the explanations is that what happens with me is not the entire picture. There is a lingering effect of what my ancestors did previous to my time. The Talmud (B’rachot 7a) quotes Rabbi Yochanan who says that Moses asked G-d why some righteous people suffer whilst others prosper, and some wicked people prosper whilst others suffer. G-d answered that a righteous man who prospers is clearly the son of another righteous man – but if he suffers it must be that he is the son of a wicked man. A wicked man who prospers is the son of a righteous man but the wicked person who suffers is the son of a wicked man. The Talmud is not entirely satisfied with this line of reasoning because we know from other sources (e.g. the commentaries on the Ten Commandments) that G-d visits the sins of the ancestors on their descendants only if the latter

TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488 persist in their forebears’ sins. In the end Rabbi Meir says, quoting Ex. 33:19, G-d says, “I am gracious to whomever I choose and I have mercy on whomever I choose.” The outcome is that there are two aspects to reward and punishment – our deeds, and G-d’s will. Because we do not always know how G-d’s will works, we have to do our best to choose the way of righteousness. And if a reward comes, it comes.

NOT BREAD ALONE

Marie Antoinette said, “If they have no bread, let them eat cake”. The problem is that if you have no bread, you are not likely to have cake either. But if you do have bread, do you have enough? “No,” says the Torah: “Man does not live by bread alone; a man lives by the utterance of the mouth of the Lord” (Deut. 8:3). Here too there is a paradox. If you have the Divine word but no bread, you cannot really live either, for if you are starving your mind, heart and spirit are focussed on one thing, and that is not likely to be metaphysical. This is why the sages say in Pir’kei Avot (3:21), “When there is no flour there is no Torah”. But yet another paradox: the statement in Avot continues, “When there is no Torah there is no flour”. True, the hungry person is obsessed with food, but the way to food needs the Torah of honesty (don’t steal and take food from others) and the Torah of purpose (why do I need food? in order to live and to have a cause to direct my life).

The next level up the path of the righteous people is Yirat Chet - “fear of sinning”. If you recall, Ramchal bases his book on the list compiled by the great Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair. Ramchal therefore explains to us why fear of sin is listed so late in the process - surely by the time one has achieved all the aforementioned levels, one has already attained some level of fear of sinning? This is correct. Ramchal explains that fear of sin consists of a basic level which he writes is, “extremely easy to attain”, then a higher level of “Yirat Haromemut” - which literally means fear of the exaltedness of G-d, which itself is followed by “Yirat Chet”. The basic level of fear is that which any rational person has. They don’t wish to sin either because they are fearful for their physical wellbeing (because G-d can punish them or because a sin itself could have unhealthy repercussions) or for their spiritual well being. Once a person has acquired some

WHAT I WANT FROM G-D

G-d constantly wants things from us. An example is the verse in this week’s portion, “Now, O Israel, what does the Lord your G-d want from you, other than to revere the Lord your G-d, to walk in His ways, to love Him, and to serve the Lord your G-d with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deut. 10:12). I have often wondered what would happen if the verse were written the other way, telling G-d what we humans wanted from Him. What would we say? Maybe, “Now, O Lord our G-d, what do your children want from You, other than to protect Your children, to keep them safe, them and their children: to love them, and to bless them with every spiritual and material blessing”? G-d would probably answer, “But that is what I do already!” We would say, “Yes, but You don’t always show the love, support and blessing in the way we want. “You seem to let the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer, You send us blessings but not always when we want them and in the amounts we desire, You promise us Your protection but we often feel bereft in the cold and dark, waiting for Your intervention which is late when it comes…”. The conversation could go on for ever. The problem is that we don’t find it easy to understand the way He governs His universe. I once turned the discussion into a Yom Kippur sermon in which I asked, “What would happen if we decided to advertise for another G-d? Just theoretically of course, but would we get a different deal from another G-d?”

Last week I heard a rabbi speak about another side of the question, “If we ran the world, would we do it better?” The rabbi’s answer to his own musing was, “If we were G-d and we ran the world, we probably wouldn’t do it differently. We would still be too small and ephemeral to grasp the higher levels of world management.” Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev used to have these conversations with G-d all the time. He once said something which would probably resonate with all of us, “G-d, I don’t ask You to let me run the world. I don’t even ask You to explain why I suffer. I only ask You to assure me that the suffering is for Your sake!” Rabbi Apple served for 32 years as the chief minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, Australia’s oldest congregation. He is now retired and lives in Jerusalem. Rabbi Apple blogs at http://www.oztorah.com

deeper understanding of life, however, this level of fear is insufficient. The level of fear higher than that, “Yirat Ha’Romemut”’, may better be described as “awe”. When faced with opportunity for sin, a person considers, “How can I, a lowly human being, possibly negate the will of a king so awesome as is G-d, the King of the Universe?!” This level of fear requires pre-mediation and a certain higher level of understanding. This also means that even if there would be no repercussions for our actions (which of course there are) we still would not be able to bring ourselves to act contrary to His will. Likewise when performing a Mitzvah such as prayer, when one is full of Yirat Haromemut, one is astounded by the very fact that they are standing in front of such an awesome king. Yirat Chet is for the rest of the time. When one is not faced with opportunity for sin, nor actively engaged in a Mitzvah, they nevertheless constantly mull over their actions and question if they are up to a high standard.

We continue with the manner in which a creature may be captured on Shabbat. As discussed, unless there is a danger to life, one may not touch a creature directly as it is Muktzah. It was also explained that no creature may be captured properly on Shabbat, with some Biblically prohibited, others Rabbinically. Creatures that pose a threat to one’s life (such as those carrying diseases) must be trapped and even killed where necessary. One may also trap - but not kill - a clearly aggravated wasp that is about to sting. If there is a wasp that may sting and is causing distress by its presence, it would be permissible to catch it in a container. The container must either: 1. Have a hole in it - even a hole that the creature will not notice. This would mean that one is not actually trapping the creature as it could theoretically escape through the hole, or; 2. Not be shut properly. One can achieve this by closing the lid of the container almost all of the way. How to maintain that position of the lid? By placing a knife or

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

similar in between the lid and the container. Again, this will result in the creature being able to escape in theory. Once the insect is freed (for example, outdoors) one need not check the container to confirm that there are no further creatures inside it before shutting it properly. This is especially true if there is food in the container, which you would certainly not want to be touched by the creature. One may also not shut a bin if it is almost full if insects will thereby be trapped and have no room to fly around inside. Creatures must not be placed into water if they will inevitably die. When it comes to Sukkot, some recommend placing a bowl of honey outside the Sukka and allowing the creatures to enjoy themselves in that. Alternatively, one may attract them to a bowl of honey and then carry the bowl outside. One may not, however, lay down traps or poison on Shabbat, though one may do so prior to the onset of Shabbat even though a creature (large or small) may get trapped in it on Shabbat itself.

Eikev Parshat Eikev talks of the wonderful land of Israel that the Jewish people were about to enter. The seven fruits, the streams, the quarries, the special attention that Hashem pays it and the abundance of food there. Moshe reminds the Jewish people that they should never forget Hashem whatever success they have and however rich they become. Don’t think it’s because the Jewish people are perfect and other nations less so that is why Hashem is giving us Eretz Yisrael. No. We the Jewish people did not always do the correct thing in the wilderness over the forty years - we did give Moshe quite a rough time. Nonetheless, out of the keeping of the promise to and the love for our great ansectors, did He nevertheless give us Eretz Yisrael. If we keep the Torah and Mitzvot, everything would be good there. It would rain on time, produce would grow and we will spend many happy years there. If not, we would be sent away, as is what happened so many long years ago. We are excited at the thought that one day, the Jewish people will be comforted and brought back to the holy land with Moshaich Amen!

In a nutshell Much of the fabulous Sidra we read this week is about reward and punishment. Back in the day, we were able to see very clearly how the Jewish people were faring. “If you listen to these Mitzvot… Hashem will guard the covenant and kindness which He promised your fathers. He will love you, bless your children and your livestock etc”. Similarly we have the famous second passage of Shema in which we learn all about the rain and plentiful food that results, if we keep Hashem’s Mitzvot. If, however we don’t, then the rain simply stops and there’s no produce and eventually the Jews get removed from the holy land. Did you know that we learn from that passage that you must feed your animals before yourself? Interesting! That only applies to food not drink. Moshe reassured the Jews - you may wonder how on earth will we overpower these mighty nations? Don’t be scared - remember the great miracles Hashem did for you in Egypt. Hashem will even send a small annoying creature

to get rid of the hiding enemies. Remember though, to destroy the idols. Remember also how Hashem gave you food and clothing that didn’t wear out for forty years! Now, Hashem is bringing you to a land blessed with seven types of produce, filled with streams trailing through valleys and mountains. Do you know the seven types of produce? We also learn the Mitzva of Birkat Hamazon from this week’s sidra. Never become arrogant - whatever success you attain don’t forget that it is Hashem who gives you strength. Also don’t assume, says Moshe, that it’s due to the occupying nations of Canaan’s wickedness and your righteousness by contrast, which is why Hashem will help you succeed. Not at all. You the Jewish people have been rebelling against Hashem in our journey through the wilderness. The Golden Calf had placed the Jews in great danger until Moshe prayed for them. Eventually, Moshe says, I came down from the mountain and broke the

luchot! You also rebelled in other places in the wilderness, but I prayed to G-d to forgive you in the Merit of your forefathers Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov. I then carved out new Luchot and placed them in the Aron. Moshe continues by reminding the Jewish people of the special love Hashem has for them. And to remember many of the miracles Hashem did for them, both to protect them and to punish the sinners such as Datan and Aviram. He continues praising the land of Israel stating the famous words that “G-d’s eyes are on the land from the beginning of the year until the end of the year” meaning there’s a special attention Hashem pays to the land and its inhabitants. Moshe concludes with telling them that if they keep the Mitzvot they will enjoy long years in the holy land. “From Lebanon down to the sea will be your borders” .

Sixteen-goal Lions rout Scrabble in Cup BY DAVID SAFFER Reiss Mogilner scored six goals as Maccabi London Lions thumped Scrabble A in the second round of the Cyril Anekstein Cup. The Premier League side racked up a 16-0 win with Daniel Green and Michael Kenley both bagging a hat-trick. Ed Brafman, David Dinkin, and Adam Hassanali completed the rout in a mismatch of a tie. Lions could have scored in the opening minute of the clash but soon opened the scoring and led 9-0 by half time. Zinadine Zidane The Division One team, though outclassed, battled away to the end. Lions boss was lost for words at full time such was the display from his team who gave every respect to the opposition. “I’m not really sure there’s anything to say, we are happy to make it through to the next round of the cup,” he commented. Hendon United Sports ran out 3-1 victors against League One outfit North London Raiders. The Premier side led early in the second half only for Raiders to equalise but struck two late goals to book a place in round three of the competition. with goals from Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial. Wolves have enjoyed a fine campaign and face Olympiakos at Molineux tonight. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side scored a crucial away goal in the first leg and will hope to advance with the tie level at 1-1. Rangers though face a huge task to overcome Bayer 04 Laverkusan this evening as the Bundesliga side have a 3-1 advantage from the Ibrox pre-lockdown encounter. Of the British teams, Solskjaer has been planning for next week’s quarter finals having won the opening leg 5-0, Nuno has a great opportunity but Steven Gerard, whose team opened their Scottish Premiership campaign with a 1-0 win at Aberdeen at the weekend, are clear outsiders to progress. On the domestic front, Arsenal came from behind against Chelsea to win the FA Cup for a record 14th time. Skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the match winner, scoring twice at Wembley. Aubameyang, who also captains Gabon, levelled the match in the first half with a clinical penalty before slotting home a brilliant 67 minutes winner at the first ever behind-closed doors final. Spanish head coach Mikel Arteta became the first former captain to lead his team to an FA Cup triumph. Assistant to Guardiola at City, Arteta landed his first major honour in his first season at the helm and first major accolade since the Arsene Wenger era. The Gunners showed tremendous resolve after going a goal down to deservedly defeat the Blues. Lampard, in his first season as manager, will rue injuries to key players during the game. Cesar Azpilicueta left the pitch in tears in the first half and Christian Pulisic, who opened the scoring on five minutes with a neat finish, eventually departed with a hamstring injury. The dismissal of Mateo Kovacic for two yellow cards was tough on Chelsea, especially a second caution for a tackle on Granit Xhaka which looked a very harsh decision. Questions were asked by pundits why referee Anthony Taylor did not check VAR on such an” important call. circumstances, said delighted Fortune Arsenal are now in the Europa League boss Simon Linden. but whether is enough to persuade “We had a that number of players out, ReAubaneyang to stay at the club is debatbuck got injured, so I couldn’t have asked able. campaign in eighth place, their worst finish for 25 years, but as cup winners will compete in the same competition as Tottenham Hotspur next season. The result will hurt Chelsea followers, but they have the consolation of Champions League football next season. Tottenham supporters are as upset because the search for a first major honour since a League Cup success in 2008 continues and ‘Gooner’ fans again have the bragging rights in north London. Elsewhere, Fulham are back in the big time after breaking Brentford hearts in the Championship play off final at Wembley on Tuesday night. Scott Parker’s team repeated their 2018 play off success to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. The richest one-off game in football is worth an estimated £160m and full back Joe Bryan struck gold, scoring twice in extra time for a 2-1 victory. As for the Bees, who finished the regular season in third place, the defeat is a bitter blow as they play in a new stadium next season. This was Brentford’s ninth failed play-off campaign. The west Londoners last played top flight football in 1947 and would have missed the play-off pain had they defeated Stoke City and Barnsley in their final two league matches. It was case of agonising failure for Bees followers. Wigan, meantime, have been relegated to League One after losing an appeal against a 12-point deduction for going into administration. An independent arbitration panel ruled against Wigan. Barnsley, who finished in a relegation place, remain in the Championship. PHOTO: DAVID SAFFER Forty-eight hours before Fulham’s triumph Harrogate Town created history at Wembley by sealing promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history.
