The United States has withdrawn from the United Nations Human Rights Council. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised a “courageous” decision. Ambassador Nikki Haley slammed the organisation as “not worthy” of its name and said it made a “mockery” of human rights. The UN envoy noted that the human rights body had been given opportunities to make changes and had warned previously it would leave if essential reforms were not achieved. Haley, who has also criticised the council for its “chronic bias” against Israel, in a statement said that the Council had been a protector of Human Rights abusers for too long and a “cesspool” of political bias. “Our call for reform was not

heeded,” she explained. “Human rights abusers continue to serve on and be elected to the Council. “The world’s most inhumane regimes continue to escape scrutiny, and the Council continues politicising and scapegoating countries with positive human rights records in an attempt to distract from abusers in their ranks.” She added: “This step is not a retreat from human rights commitments, on the contrary, we take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organartion that makes a mockerty of hman rights.” New York-based Human Rights Watch slammed the decision but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the US for a “courageous” decision. “Israel thanks President Trump, Secretary Pompeo and Ambassador

Hebron building demolition postponed while fire and rocket attacks continue BY LEAH WAXLER Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed the evacuation and demolition of five illegal Palestinian buildings scheduled in Hebron. This is the third time in recent months the evacuation has been shelved, the latest following international pressure. Police officers and soldiers were on high alert before the stand down potentially due to the visit of US President Donald Trump to the Middle East this weekend. As tensions continue to simmer in the region one Palestinian died and five were wounded as they tried to enter Israel when an IDF booby trap exploded on the Gaza border. Devices have been set to limit the increased crossings of the border fence. Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman had warned terror organisations Israel will defend itself. “If anyone thinks we can carry on with this daily routine of kites and fires, he is mistaken,” he reportedly said. Israeli jets struck 25 Hamas positions in Gaza in three waves after Palestinian

terrorists fired dozens of rockets into southern communities on Tuesday night. In the biggest incident in recent weeks, no casualties were reported in Israel but damage was sustained. The IDF said seven rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome defence system. “The Hamas terror organisation led a serious rocket offensive against the Israeli home front tonight and is leading the Gaza Strip and its residents to deterioration and escalation,” a statement noted. “Hamas is responsible for everything going on in the Gaza Strip and will bear the consequences of the acts of terror against Israel’s citizens. “The IDF is prepared and determined to fulfill its mission to defend Israel’s citizens and will increase its activity if necessary and following an assessment of the situation.” The latest intervention followed jets striking nine Hamas targets including military bases in Jabalia, Al-Shati and a weapons facility in Gaza City in the early hours of Monday. An IDF spokesman said strikes were in response to explosive balloons and kites launched into Israel.

“These are terror attacks that endanger the residents of southern Israel,” said a statement. “The IDF warned and carried out several attacks near the cells responsible for the arsons and destruction of lands in Israel as well as infrastructure used by these cells.” They added: “The IDF has intelligence information and the operational ability to further increase these strikes and they will grow in strength as required. “The IDF is determined to continue acting with increasing force against these terror activities for as long as it takes and with a variety of tools, until they stop. “The Hamas terror organisation is responsible for everything that happens in and from the Gaza Strip, and it will suffer the consequences.” Kite terrorism has affected Gaza border communities for nearly three months setting fire causing extensive damage to farmland and forests. Firefighting services fought 17 fires in southern Israel on Sunday including three in the Kissufim Forest, a kibbutz and hundreds of turkeys suffocated due to smoke inhalation from the incident. Over Shabbat firefighters put out more than 20 fires close to the Gaza strip. The current heatwave made putting out the blazes hard for firefighters. “Another long hard day fighting to contain and extinguish the fires in open areas and under intense heat has passed,” Gadi Yarkni, Head of the Eshkol Regional Council,” reportedly said. “Our firefighters battle to prevent these fires from growing and engulfing towns and homes.”

The IDF has started to utilise drones to shoot down firebombs carried by balloons and kites. The IAF has also fired warning shots where terrorists are seen to be launching balloons but if unheeded it is believed pilots may take direct aim at terrorists launching balloons. Elsewhere in Israel, Shin Bet, IDF and Israel Police exposed a Hamas terror cell in the Nablus area planning attacks in cities including in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Security forces found explosive devices, materials for producing explosives and bomb-manufacturing instructions. The cell had been operating since last October last year. Twenty terrorists, the majority affiliated to Hamas, had a long history of terror activities “The exposure of this affair demonstrates, once again, the will and the effort that Hamas invests in terror infrastructure to promote serious terror attacks in Israel,” a Shin Bet official reportedly said. “The exposure of the infrastructure teaches us about the continued desire by Hamas to carry out terror attacks against Israeli targets, while undermining the relative calm that has been taking effect in recent days. “We will continue, together with our partners in the IDF and the Israel Police, to act with determination to preemptively thwart terror infrastructure and the murderous intentions of Hamas and to bring members of the infrastructure to account.” Netanyahu also issued a statement, adding, “Hamas is trying to harm us both from Gaza and from Judea and Samaria. That is the reason that we will continue to maintain security control over the entire area west of the Jordan.”

Jail term for vile anti-Semite Chabloz Anti-Semitic blogger Alison Chabloz has been sentenced to 20-week jail term suspended for two years and ordered to serve 180 hours of unpaid community service at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. Chabloz received an indefinite restraining order against contacting two leaders of Campaign Against Antisemitism and is banned from social media for 12 months. District Judge Zani, who found Chabloz guilty of criminal offences of the Communications Act 2003 at a hearing last month, ordered her to pay a £115 victim surcharge and costs of £600. The landmark case delivers a precedent on incitement on social media and whether the law considers Holocaust denial to be “grossly offensive” and illegal when used as a means to hound Jews. The Holocaust denier from Glossop in Derbyshire pleaded “not guilty” on charges relating to three self-penned songs decrying the Jewish conspiracy. Two songs were performed at far-right London Forum meeting in London in September 2016 and uploaded to YouTube. A third song was uploaded to YouTube in September 2017. In spite of grossly anti-Semitic statements and social media posts, Chabloz told probation officers she had never intended to offend Jews.

The court was read an impact statement from Stephen Silverman, Campaign Against Antisemitism Director of Investigations and Enforcement. “Today, British Jews feel more beleaguered and exposed to danger than at any time in the last seventy-plus years,” he said. “Alison Chabloz has been at the forefront of those who are responsible for that state of affairs.” Reaction to the sentencing of Alison Chabloz has been swift. Gideon Falter, CAA chairman commented: “This sentence sends a strong message that in Britain Holocaust denial and antisemitic conspiracy theories will not be tolerated. “Chabloz is a remorseless and

repulsive anti-Semite who has spent years obsessively inciting others to hate Jews, principally by claiming that the Holocaust was a hoax perpetrated by Jews to defraud the world. “District Judge Zani refused to make her a martyr, leaving her a pathetic and insignificant figure who now has to learn to muzzle her incitement or face immediate imprisonment. Time will tell whether she manages.” In sentencing Ms Chabloz, District Judge Zani commented, “It appears to this court that no proper remorse is forthcoming from you. “I don’t know whether you want to be a martyr to your cause. Only time will tell. “This sentence will test your resolve. If you fail to abide by the terms of the suspended sentence you should expect to go to prison.” In his remarks when finding Ms Chabloz guilty last month, he noted that the court was “entirely satisfied” material in each of the songs complained of was grossly offensive as judged by the standards of an open and multi-racial. The defendant had failed by a considerable margin to persuade the court that her right to freedom of speech under the guise of her work as an artist provide her immunity from prosecution in relation to each of the songs.

The defendant has failed, by some considerable margin, to persuade this court that her right to freedom of speech as provided by Article 10, under the guise of her work as an artist, can properly provide her with immunity from prosecution in relation to each of the songs complained of. Having had the opportunity to assess the defendant’s live evidence during the course of these proceedings, I am entirely satisfied that she will have intended to insult those to whom the material relates or, at least, that she must have recognised that there was a risk of so doing. Having carefully considered all evidence received and submissions made, I am entirely satisfied that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty of charges 2, 4 and 5. I dismiss charges 1 and 3 as they are alternatives to charges 2 and 4.” Copies of the full judgement are available upon request.

Having assess the defendant’s evidence Judge Zani was satisfied Chabloz intended to insult those to whom the material related. Having considered all evidence, the defendant was guilty of three charges. Chabloz described herself as a Holocaust revisionist and her music as “satire”. She noted Jewish people found her songs funny and no-one was forced to listen to them. Offensive lyrics questioned whether the Holocaust happened, noting that the “so-called Holocaust” had “been used to sustain the criminal State of Israel”. Chabloz described the Shoah as “a bunch of lies” and penned that Auschwitz was “a theme park just for fools” whilst the gas chambers were “a proven hoax.” Under cross-examination, Chabloz contested six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis citing that it was “unlikely to be more than a million.” Chabloz said sending schoolchildren to visit Auschwitz was “indoctrination” and Jews were disproportionately influential in Parliament. She also mocked Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel and Anne Frank. Songs included iconic Jewish chords from Hevenu Shalom Aleichem and Hava Nagila.

Outside court, before and following the verdict, Jewish protestors clashed with Chabloz supporters before police arrived to clear the area. The Crown Prosecution Service took over the case against Chabloz initiated by CAA in a private prosecution. The verdict comes amidst a crisis of confidence in the Jewish community. CPS prosecutes in the region of 15,000 hate crimes, but there has yet to be a year in which there have been more than two dozen known prosecutions of anti-Semitic hate crimes. CAA research shows that more than half of British Jews feels the CPS does not do enough against anti-Semitic crime resulting in the organisation taking action against crime. Only last month, neo-Nazi leader Jeremy Bedford-Turner received a 12-month prison terms after being unanimously convicted by a jury of incitement to racial hatred over a speech he gave in 2015 at a demonstration calling to protest against the “Jewification” of Golders Green. CAA eventually won a landmark judicial review forced CPS to prosecute the case. Bedford-Turner was represented by barrister Adrian Davies, who also represented Chabloz.

45 Missiles fired at Israel from Gaza

Forty-five missiles and mortars were fired at Israel from Gaza last night. Three of the missiles landed in Israeli communities in the Eshkol region, causing damage to cars and buildings, directly hitting a house and landing near a kindergarten, but no injuries resulted. Local communities spent the night in bomb shelters but schools are open as normal today. Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile defence system intercepted seven of the missiles and three fell within the Gaza Strip. A statement by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed Israel’s position that “Hamas is responsible for everything that transpires in the Gaza Strip and will bear the consequences for deliberately targeting its terror at Israeli civilians”.

In response to the missile attack Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets targeted approximately 25 Hamas and Islamic Jihad military targets in the Gaza Strip. In a related development, firebombs launched from Gaza attached to kites and balloons caused 16 fires in Israel. 6,000 acres of Israeli farmland and nature reserves have been damaged since April. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced yesterday that the Rafah crossing from Gaza into Egypt, which was opened for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, will remain open until the Muslim holiday of Eid al-adha on August 21. The current opening has already been the longest continuous period since 2013 and has been used by 11,455 people.

Bibi meets King Abdullah in secret meeting BY ADAM MOSES

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jordan’s King Abdullah discussed Middle East peace possibilities in Amman in a secret meeting on Monday. In what was a first meeting between the two since 2014, Netanyahu’s attendance was revealed after he returned to Israel in the evening. Israeli intelligence chief Yossi Cohen, Netanyahu’s military attache Eliezer Toledano, his Chief of Staff Yoav Horowitz, a representative from the National Security Council and the Prime Minister’s most senior economic adviser, Prof.

Avi Simhon also attended. Jordanian representatives were Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Adnan Jundi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas and Adviser to His Majesty for Economic Affairs Mohamad Al Ississ. The discussions came ahead of US President Donald Trump’s senior advisor Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, Special Representative for International Negotiations arriving in the region next week. Netanyahu’s office said that both leaders discussed “regional

developments and advancing the peace process and bilateral relations”. Netanyahu stressed Israel’s commitment to maintaining a status quo at the holy sites in Jerusalem. King Abdullah noted the only way to achieve peace in the region was by reaching a two-state solution and the establishment a Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as capital, living side by side with Israel in peace and security. Discussions also covered bilateral issues including the Red Sea-Dead Sea Water Conveyance

Segev charge with spying for Iran BY LEAH WALXER Former Israeli energy minister Gonen Segev has been arrested and charged with spying for Iran. Israel’s internal security agency Shin Bet announced the news on Monday. Segev, who had been living in Nigeria in recent years, was formally charged with aiding the enemy in wartime, committing espionage against Israel and relaying information to the enemy last Friday. He had been in custody for more than a month having returned to

Israel at the request of the Police after being detained by Equatorial Guinean officials. Shin Bet say Segev was recruited by Iran’s Embassy in Nigeria in 2012. He is alleged to have provided Iran with information about Israel’s energy infrastructure and security installations along with other sensitive information. The former IDF doctor and officer moved to Nigeria after serving two years of a five-year sentence in prison in Israel for drug smuggling, forgery and fraud.

He was released from prison in 2007. “Segev met with his Iranian handlers in various hotels and apartments around the world which he assumed were used for covert activity,” a Shin Bet spokesman said. “Segev even received secret communications equipment for encoding messages between him and his handlers. Segev had subsequently twice visited Iran to meet with his handlers in full knowledge that they were Iranian intelligence operatives.” Shin Bet added: “In order to perform the missions that he had been assigned by his handlers, Segev maintained contacts with Israeli citizens in the foreign affairs and security fields. “Segev worked to put some of these Israeli citizens in contact with Iranian intelligence agents by misleading the former and presenting the latter as innocent Iranian businessmen.” Segev was Minister of Energy and Infrastructure under Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Prime Minister Shimon Peres from 1995 to 1996. He served in the Knesset in the Tzomet and Yi-ud political parties. He was reportedly practicing medicine in Nigeria without a medical license, treating Israeli staffers at the Nigerian Embassy and local Jewish community in recent years.

The meeting illustrates the importance Israel and Jordan place on the US visit to Jerusalem and Amman. It comes ahead of Prince William’s highly anticipated visit to Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.

Police called after Nazi salute in Hendon No action has been taken after a man allegedly performed a Nazi salute outside kosher supermarket Tapuach in Hendon on Sunday. Volunteer orthodox neighbourhood watch group Shomrim detained the 30-year-old man who was arrested by Police on suspicion of a religiously aggravated public order offence. Following investigation, he was released. The incident came just days after a driver pleaded guilty to a racially aggravated breach of the Public Order Act after ‘Heil Hitler’ outside Wolfson Hillel school in Southgate in April. Stephen Panagi was sentenced to 100 hours community service and

Hendon Central

ordered to attend a session on Holocaust education. Following the verdict, a Community Security Trust spokesman said it was important police and the Crown Prosecution Service took these cases seriously. “This case and subsequent sentence serves as a reminder for anyone who thinks they can engage in anti-Semitism, and get away with it, that the law does not tolerate this sort of despicable behaviour,” noted a statement. “This case shows it is always worth reporting anti-Semitic abuse to the Police and CST so that offenders can be brought to justice.” Brent Street remained closed in while the area was secured.

Israel praises US withdrawal from Human Rights Council CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

“Reform necessary, but UK is here to stay. UN Human Rights crucial to holding states to account.” The announcement came after Jewish organisations praised Johnson’s criticism of the Council over its ‘biased’ attitude towards Israel earlier in the week. Addressing the opening of the 38th council session, he honed in on the Council’s controversial Agenda Item 7, a permanent fixture devoted to discussing alleged human rights abuses in the Palestinian territories. Johnson said the UK viewed Item 7 as “disproportionate” and “damaging to the causes of peace,” and threatened to vote against motions

under the clause next year unless the Council changes its behaviour. Johnson said: “That does not mean that we in the UK are blind to the value of this council, including the work it could do on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict under the right agenda item.” The US and Israel have called for the removal of Item 7. There had been speculation the US would appeal to the UN General Assembly and vote to eliminate it. The US consistently votes against Agenda Item 7 resolutions, while EU countries abstains. Sheila Gewolb, Board of Deputies senior vice president noted, “We welcome the Foreign Secretary’s bold, clear and important

intervention at the UN Human Rights Council. “Alongside his strong speech on the importance of girls’ education, his commitment that the UK will vote against all resolutions in 2019 tabled under the infamous Item 7, which singles out Israel as the only country in the world to have its own agenda item, is an important victory for human rights. “Human rights are universal and should be applied universally and not in such a nakedly biased way. “The UNHRC is undermined by politicisation and the singling out of Israel in its standing agenda and the UK has shown the way to giving this potentially crucial body much greater weight and standing.”

Wizz Air joy and BA chaos over flights to Israel BY ADAM MOSES

Passengers planning flights to Israel experienced joy and despair this week. Many are now planning winter trips to Eilat after Wizz Air announced it was starting a direct flight from Luton to Eilat in four months. Seats are available from £26.99 according to the Budget airline’s website from October 28. But a reported 2,000 British Airways passengers who took advantage of heavily discounted flights (to Tel Aviv and Dubai) have had tickets cancelled without notice. The Wizz Air route was announced by the Israel Tourist Board on Tuesday in what is the first direct flight to the Red Sea destination since Monarch folded in 2017. “This is a great vote of confidence in Israeli tourism,” said Tourism Minister Yariv Levin in a statement. “It’s further proof that the Eilat

directive – which we initiated to encourage tourism into the resort – is indeed bearing fruit.” Sharon E. Bershadsky, director of the Israel Government Tourism Office for UK and Ireland, added: “Eilat benefits from the warm and dry desert climate all year round whilst sitting on the edge of the amazing Red Sea and surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. “It makes Eilat the perfect winter sun destination.” “WIZZ continues to grow and invest in the UK,” said Owain Jones, Chief Corporate Officer. “The new routes will be welcomed by our UK customers looking for an exciting winter break, whether that’s winter sunshine, mountain sports or experiencing some of the finest sights that nature has to offer.” Wizz Air’s latest addition comes after the airline announced flights from Luton to Tel Aviv last year.

The British airline operates eight new Airbus aircraft from its London-Luton base. Meanwhile, BA has apologised to customers but will not honour bookings made earlier this month as a number of agencies mistakenly sold flights at incorrectly advertised fares. Return fares to Tel Aviv were selling for well under £200. Many clients are angry at the situation though some passengers with imminent flights were allowed to travel. BA has issued £100 vouchers to compensate passengers but some industry experts have questioned how the carrier is able to cancel as they made the error. Agencies selling tickets are responsible for refunding clients but that could take time. And there are limits on how compensation vouchers might be redeemed. There are reportedly passengers

that have yet to be contacted by BA. Ben from Golders Green told the Jewish Weekly, “I booked five tickets for my family, the kids were so looking forward to what would have been a dream holiday, but that has now been dashed. “BA have made the mistake and should honour the prices. “It will now cost us far more to go and I don’t know if we can afford the extra cost even with the vouchers.” BA said in a statement: “Errors like this are exceptionally rare, and if they do occur, under contract law, there is no binding contract

between the parties. “We have apologised to customers and offered a gesture of goodwill.” Guy Anker, deputy editor of MoneySavingExpert.com, added that BA should allow passengers to fly at the price booked. He noted: “While this may have been a ‘rare’ error, it’s not the passengers’ error. “They’ve bought these tickets in good faith at a believable price - it’s not as though the tickets cost £5, which would clearly have been a glitch.”

Headstones damaged in Manchester Cemetery BY ADAM MOSES Over 50 headstones have sustained an estimated £100,000 worth of damage at Urmston Jewish Cemetery in Manchester. Community leaders believe three attacks took place over the past month. The Community Security Trust and Police are aware of the

situation. “We are working hard with the cemetery authorities, local Police and councillors to install further security measures at the site and to encourage local residents to report the vandals responsible for these distressing actions,” said Mark Gardner, of the CST. Police are investigating the incident as hate crimes.

“No arrests have been made,” a spokesperson said. “Officers are investigating CCTV footage to identify offenders and patrols in the area have been increased. World Jewish Congress condemned what they described as the “deplorable desecration” of dozens of headstones. “We trust that authorities will thoroughly and appropriately

investigate whether this utterly disrespectful act was indeed a hate crime, and bring to justice those responsible,” a statement noted. “The destruction of property, heritage, and places of mourning is a tragedy. “Our thoughts are with the Jewish community of Manchester.”

Mass prayers said to protect ‘orthodox’ values in schools

Rebbonim in the presence of the Mara D’Asra - the head of the community - and saw close to 7,000 participants come together. During many addresses, leaders spoke of their gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Government following their repeated declarations about the importance of faith in society. Looking forward, speakers expressed deep concerns by recent OFSTED overreach yet mentioned their hope that a constructive dialogue could be achieved. Tributes were also paid to Rabbonim, teachers and support staff who have enabled Torah education to flourish in Stamford Hill. Rabbi Dovid Frand, President of the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations said, “The exemplary behaviour of these thousands of children throughout this event is tribute to the excellent education and high moral standards that our system delivers.” “We thank G-d that we are privileged to live in a tolerant country with a Government that has repeated pledged to safeguard religion and religious practice. “However, there are influential secular forces seeking to impinge on our rights and we have all gathered together in prayer in the fervent hope that we can continue to

practice and teach our Torah-true values for generations to come.” JCC founder Levi Schapiro said the gathering illustrated unity on the issue but lamented the fact that in modern Britain lobbying the Government was necessary to protect traditional religious values. Rabbonim have voiced fears for a few years that proposed laws will regulate what is being taught at orthodox schools and may force them to close. And a number of Rabbonim and leading community activists have even questioned whether Orthodox communities have a future in the UK if education policy is not changed. HaRav Shraga Feivel Zimmerman from Gateshead recently stated that the situation could reach a point where Jews may leave en masse, a view echoed by Rabbi Aharon Klein from the Belzer community in London, who said there would be no future for the Charedi community in England. “It is very important that within our school’s Torah education and the promotion of a Torah lifestyle should not be compromised, that parents who choose Torah education for their children should be able to receive the very best in authentic Torah tuition,” Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence, Kinloss Synagogue,

commented. “It is nonetheless important that growing up in England, our children should be properly educated in the language, Maths and science so that they will be able to participate fully in the life of this country and to appreciate its values.” Earlier this month, the Jewish Leadership Council responded to the government’s much anticipated Integrated Communities Strategy ‘green paper’ in response to a review by Dame Louise Casey’s highlighting the number of communities divided by race, faith or socio-economic in 2016. The paper is the government’s vision to build strong integrated communities based on shared rights, responsibilities and opportunities. Jewish representatives told the government the idea of ‘British

The balance between births and deaths in the Jewish population of the UK has changed dramatically over the past decade, with an excess of birth over deaths driving up the overall size of the population. A new report, Vital statistics of the UK Jewish population: Births and deaths, authored by JPR Research Fellow, Dr Donatella Casale Mashiah, demonstrates that there have been more Jewish births than deaths in the UK in every year since 2006. For decades prior to this, the reverse was the case. In the latest available annual figures, the excess was close to 1,300 people. These are some of the key findings in the report produced by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research on behalf of the Board of Deputies

of British Jews. Jewish birth and death counts have been monitored in the United Kingdom for several decades, and until recently, showed a clear excess of deaths over births. When deaths outnumber births, a population typically declines in size, unless it is buttressed by migration or other processes to help increase numbers, such as conversion. Neither of these factors has played a significant enough role in the UK to affect the overall balance within the Jewish population. However, when births outnumber deaths, a population grows, and the new evidence outlined in the study indicates that, in contrast to almost all other Diaspora Jewish populations, this is the current situation in

the UK. The report cites two main reasons for the change: an unprecedented transition in mortality - seen not just in the UK Jewish population but generally in the UK and worldwide - as a result of economic developments, improving living standards, public health measures, sanitary reforms and advancements in medicine; and high fertility among strictly Orthodox Jews driving a compositional change in the UK Jewish population as a whole. Beyond the portrait of the community painted in the study, the report also stresses the value of the data for community planning, particularly in the areas of facilities for child care and elderly care, school places, religious services and burial

grounds. Executive Director of JPR, Dr Jonathan Boyd, said: “These new data not only provide further evidence of the extraordinary demographic shift happening in the UK Jewish population, but will also serve as a boon to community planners everywhere. They will be a vital resource, particularly for determining the numbers of primary school places needed in the years to come. Jewish population growth will be seen among the youngest age bands, especially in the most Orthodox sectors, and community leaders and planners will need to plan effectively for that.” Chief Executive of the Board of Deputies, Gillian Merron, commented: “The Board of Deputies is

Thousands of orthodox Jews gathered outside Bais Hamedrash Toras Eitz Chaim in north London to demonstrate the strength of feeling to safeguarding ‘orthodox’ education in schools. Some 7,000 turned out following anger over Ofsted inspectors targeting religious Jewish school’s that refuse to teach certain characteristics covered by the Equalities Act 2010. New rules provided by the Education Ministry mean that ‘lifestyles’ must be taught among other subjects leading to a number of orthodox community representatives lobbying for leniency when it comes to teaching different sexualities and genders. values’ was seen as “hostile and needed to be “unpicked”. “Rightly or wrongly, for many, the term has negative connotations,” they stated. “Many instinctively know what is meant by it but for many, it is a hostile term. “Promoting why it is something which defends everyone is crucial to detoxifying the term.” Ofsted inspectors have highlighted issues at some religious schools where there is a refusal to teach pupils about different sexualities or gender identities. Ofsted Chief Inspector Amanda Spielman reportedly said that avoiding teaching unifying messages was of “great concern”. For orthodox communities, this issue will grow as the strength of feeling solidifies.

BY DAVE RICH Recognising antisemitism might seem like the simplest thing in the world. When people shout “Heil Hitler” at Jewish people in the street, or when they daub swastikas on synagogues and smash up Jewish gravestones, we don’t need complicated definitions and explanations of antisemitism to understand it. However once you move away from this kind of nasty street

abuse and into the political world, things become more complicated. Much of the antisemitism faced by Jewish people across Europe in recent years no longer comes from neo-Nazi skinheads and other fascists. Instead, it increasingly comes from the far left and radical Islamists, who use new language to package up the same old hatred. So instead of talking about Jews controlling politicians and the media or starting wars, they blame it on “Zionists”. Instead of saying Jews were behind the Russian Revolution, they claim Israel is the real power behind ISIS. In a new and particularly hurtful antisemitic slur, they claim that Israel and Zionism are no different from Nazism. Much of this takes place under the cover of anti-Israel activities, or targets Israel as a proxy for Jews. Around 15 years ago Jewish community organisations worked with the European Union’s anti-racist body, the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia,

to write a definition of antisemitism that would include both types: the crude, street-based antisemitic violence, harassment and threats; and the more insidious language and attitudes that make up this newer antisemitism. They came up with a definition that listed different examples of language that could, in certain contexts, be antisemitic. They acknowledged the need to strike a balance between curtailing antisemitism and permitting legitimate criticism of Israel: the definition warned that antisemitism could “target the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity”, but stated unambiguously that “criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic.” This definition was deliberately not a strict legal code, but rather a practical working guide to help people identify when particular crimes or incidents involved antisemitism. In other words, when graffiti is daubed on a synagogue, how do you know whether it is just ordinary graffiti that happens to be on a Jewish building, or if the

building was targeted specifically because it was Jewish? A slightly different version of this definition was adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance in May 2016. This is an alliance of 31 governments, including the UK, dedicated to promoting Holocaust remembrance and combating contemporary antisemitism. Known as the IHRA definition, this is fast becoming the standard definition of antisemitism used widely in the UK and abroad. It has been adopted or endorsed by the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments, over 120 local authorities, several governments overseas and by the European Parliament. It is used by the National Union of Students and is in the College of Policing’s hate crime training manual. Some critics of Israel dislike the IHRA definition because they fear it will prevent them from campaigning against Israel. Around two dozen such people, mainly left-leaning academics and artists, had a letter in the Guardian this week that was an oblique rejection of the IHRA definition on these grounds. Their fear

is misplaced. The definition says that it is antisemitic to deny “the Jewish people their right to self-determination”, for example by treating the very existence of “a State of Israel” as racist, but it allows people to make harsh criticisms of specific Israeli policies and practices. Even then, it says that treating the existence of Israel as racist only might be antisemitic, “taking into account the overall context.” It is easy to overestimate the amount of understanding of antisemitism in wider society. Most people do not know about the history of the blood libel or the provenance of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Having a practical guide to antisemitic language is invaluable for Police officers, prosecutors and politicians which is why so many bodies have followed the UK government’s lead and adopted the IHRA definition. Those people who reject this definition need to explain why they, and they alone, ought to be exempt from this joint effort to push antisemitism back to the margins of society.

Historic Kindertransport Castle to be Saved!

Gwrych Castle and it’s sea view

After 50 years of uncertainty and having fallen into a perilous state-of-disrepair, the future of one Gwrych Castle – the original home of Bnei Akiva, Bachad and over 200 Kindertransport refugees – is now secure. At the age of 11, Dr Mark Baker set up the Gwrych Trust and 21 years later has been able to realise his dream of purchasing the site to restore it to its former glory. The Grade I Iisted Gwrych Castle, Abergele in North Wales has been purchased after the UK government-funded National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) stepped in with the final piece of the financial jigsaw. NHMF has given a grant of £600,000 in addition to a major grant from the Richard Broyd Charitable Trust, which has enabled the

purchase to go ahead. Gwrych Castle has a rich and diverse history, with direct links to the British royal family. It was built by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh between 1810 and 1822 incorporating his ancestral home. The castle was the largest newly built structure of the nineteenth century and was designed by several prominent architects including CA Busby, George Edmund Street and Thomas Rickman – major figures in the Gothic Revival movement. It passed to Lloyd’s granddaughter, Winifred, Countess of Dundonald in 1894. When she died in 1924, she left the castle in her will to King George V and the then Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VIII). It was the intention that Gwrych would become the

family’s royal residence in Wales, however the gift was refused on the grounds of the economic downturn of the 1920s. The castle passed to the newly disestablished Church in Wales before being purchased in 1928 by the countess’s estranged husband, Douglas, 12th Earl of Dundonald. During the Second World War, the castle housed 200 Jewish refugee children as part of Operation Kindertransport. Bnei Akiva and Bachad looked after these children under the guidance of Arieh Handler, in the first Hachsharah Farm in England. Children were taught the ideology of Torah v’Avodah, and given agricultural training to help them set up some of the early kibbutzim in the soon to be established State of Israel. The Castle was also home the Bnei Akiva’s first ever ‘kinus’ (gathering) in December 1940, and also hosted Arieh Handler’s wedding. It continues to play a role in modern day Bnei Akiva, with tiyulim and educational visits to the site a regular occurrence on Summer Machane (camp) over the years. After the war the castle opened to the public as one of the first country

houses in Britain to do so. It was used as a training venue for the English World Middleweight boxing champion Randolph Turpin in the early 1950s. During the 1970s, the castle was used as a medieval entertainment centre and was the first themed attraction of its kind in Britain. The doors of the castle closed to the public in 1985 and it started to decline. It was bought in 1989 by an American businessman but sadly plans to renovate the building didn’t progress. The castle was extensively looted and vandalised, reduced to a derelict shell. It was used as the backdrop to the 1996 film Prince Valiant, starring Edward Fox, Joanna Lumley and Katherine Heigl. Sir Peter Luff, Chair of NHMF, said: “Gwrych Castle is enchanting, even in its sadly reduced state. The vision of Gwyrch Castle Preservation Trust to restore this spectacular building with a rich history and to open it again is inspiring. All of us at the National Heritage Memorial Fund felt compelled to support their ambition.” Mark Baker, Chair of Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust, said: “As a child, I would pass the castle

A huge vote of thanks must go to the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Richard Broyd Charitable Trust for believing in our vision.” Joe Boxer, Mazkir of Bnei Akiva said: “we are incredibly proud and grateful that Dr Mark Baker has been able to purchase this valuable piece of our history. We are excited that the castle will be restored, and hope it can stand as a lasting symbol of the historic role Bnei Akiva and Bachad play in educating Jewish youth – a role we continue to excel at almost eighty years on.” The castle and grounds are currently open daily for visitors but sections of the main building are closed due to its derelict state. The Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust will now set out plans to renovate the castle and the 250 acres of park and woodland. It is hoped to open the main building eventually to visitors as part of a full restoration programme.

Ich bin ein GIFTer! Space week Students from across Germany spent the weekend in London, through JCommunity (a Lauder Foundation programme). They were part of a German youth programme and spent the day on Friday volunteering for Charity GIFT. The group took part in the ‘GIFT Supermarket challenge session’ in a local supermarket, where they had to purchase food to feed a family of 5 on a budget of £10.

The group visited the GIFT warehouse to make sandwiches and package up care bags for GIFT recipient families as well as for the homeless. The students loved their experience and said they felt inspired to continue their volunteering when back in Germany. GIFT’s twin objectives are teaching young people to give and help those in need.

Michelle Barnett explained, “GIFT is increasingly contacted by international groups looking to volunteer and do social action activities whilst in the UK. Volunteering with GIFT has universal appeal that crosses language and cultural barriers.” To arrange a group packing session with GIFT or for further information, contact info@jgift.org

Israel Government Tourist Office Partner with HVS to host VIP Investment event in London

The Israel Government Tourist Office has partnered with HVS London to host a VIP Investment event in London. The event has been designed to showcase Israel as a strong investment opportunity in the hospitality sector for UK investors and hotel chains, featuring a special guest appearance from the Israel Ambassador to the UK, his Excellency Mark Regev. HVS carries out audits on specific hotel projects (appraisals) and publishes reports on large markets

(cities or countries). Each year, under the supervision of the Chairman, Russell Kett, HVS London publishes an Israel Hotel Market Overview report. The document is considered by the industry to be a very useful tool for foreign investors interested in entering the Israel hotel market. Israel enjoyed over 3.6 million visitors in 2017 with numbers predicted to increase further in to 2018 and beyond. This represents a yearon-year increase of almost 25%. 2017 was the first time in Israel’s

history that the 3 million visitor mark was reached. The current stability of the geopolitical situation combined with successful marketing actions, along with celebrations for the 70th Independence Day and the increasing number of air routes, were the main drivers of this growth. Local hoteliers benefitted from these arrivals, which is shown in the solid performance of all markets under review. With the strong numbers and demand for more hotels and infrastructure, the time is perfect for new investments. The Ministry of Tourism, who work with hoteliers, airlines and other businesses to help drive the economy, provide support and help push the necessary development of more infrastructure. Sharon Bershadsky, director of IGTO for the UK and Ireland, said “Israel is known as the ‘Land of Creation’ - we strive to be at the forefront to help support those businesses working in travel. Events like these are wonderful starting points to help generate interest, develop relationships and help form new business opportunities to help the economy. These can be assisted further with the help of marketing campaigns that push boundaries and generate high impact visibility within our target markets.”

A packed event

The event was attended by an exclusive set of VIP’s which included key discussion makers and executives within the international chains and investors in the real estate and/ or hotel field including; Mandarin Oriental, Wyndham Hotels, Hilton (Luxury) along with several other leading names. The IMOT is actively promoting the establishment of new hotels with grants, tax exemptions and cutting bureaucracy. Amir Halevy, Director General of

the Israel Ministry of tourism said “This year’s event shared exciting, new and innovative developments in the Israel hotel market. We value the opportunity to deliver our message and goals with our esteemed partners, bringing new opportunities to life, that inspire travellers to look at destinations and hotels in a new light.” For more information about Israel, please visit goisrael.com

jLiving’s welcomes Yad Laem evening exceeds new chair expectations jLiving is delighted to announce the election of Adam Gamsu as Chair, and Benjamin Conway as Vice Chair of the jLiving Board, at the AGM on 13 June 2018. The new Chair Adam Gamsu has been a member of the jLiving Property subcommittee since 2015 and was elected to join the main Board in 2017. Adam has a Master’s degree in surveying and has worked in property asset management for 15 years where he is involved in most areas of the property cycle, from acquisition through to management and development. Adam said: “I am passionate about property and housing. The way in which the design and purpose of a home can affect, and even change, the lives of its occupiers fascinates me. There is no reason why occupiers of social housing shouldn’t also have their lives positively affected by the homes in which they live. I wish them every success in their new roles and hope that, like me, in the future they can look back and take pride in the part they play in the evolving story that is jLiving.”

Teacher Recruitment Crisis in Jewish Schools In five weeks’ time, the current cohort of students on the London School of Jewish Studies Teacher Training Programmes will be graduating. Based on statistics in the last three years, 100% of these graduates will have a teaching position in September in one of the many high performing Jewish primary schools across the community. This is because there are many more schools looking for teachers than there are candidates. It is fair to say that schools are at a crisis point in recruitment, a trend that is seen nationally as well as in the Jewish Community. In fact, the problem is more acute in Jewish Schools than across the country. Jonathan Bach, Director of Teacher Training programmes at the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS), told us that in the past two weeks he has received calls from 9 Headteachers urgently looking for staff to start in September. He said, “This situation is untenable in the long term for the schools. They come to rely on agency staff, who are not only incredibly expensive for schools whose budgets are

already stretched, but offer no stability for the children, especially in primary schools. Of course, when it comes to Jewish Studies teachers, the agency option is not available, often leaving existing staff to work over and above their agreed contracts. “We have absolutely wonderful schools across the spectrum of the community for our children and Jewish schools have become ever more popular over the past 15 years. However, we need to take responsibility as a community for ensuring that we have the personnel properly trained to staff them. “LSJS runs the JTTP (Jewish Teacher Training Partnership), the only government approved provider of teacher training in the Jewish Community. The primary SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) course is a one-year qualification enabling individuals to train as a teacher and gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) qualification in one year. “The shortage of qualified teachers is so problematic, that LSJS have decided to extend the deadline for accepting applications

Captain Kane gets England off to a flyer BY DAVID SAFFER England skipper Harry Kane headed an injury time winner for a deserved victory over Tunisia in their opening World Cup fixture in Russia. In a superb start to the game Kane tapped home an opener before the Tunisians leveled from a controversial penalty after England missed a hatful of chances to seal victory. Kane’s second of the game mean that victory over Panama on Sunday will guarantee a second round spot should Belgium defeat the African side in round-robin Group G clash. Mexico stunned reigning champions Germany with a Hirving Lozano strike in the standout result of early matches whilst Ronaldo scored a sensational hat-trick to earn a 3-3 draw against Spain in the match of the tournament so far. There were great expectations of the big four – Brazil, Germany, Spain and France – but only Les Bleus picked up a victory. With the first round of games completed all that can be deduced is to expect the unexpected. Russia, the lowest ranked team of all 32 countries and arguably the most underwhelming of hosts on recent form, enjoyed a spectacular 5-0 rout against Saudia Arabia at the Luzhniki Stadium. Headers from Yuri Gazinsky and Artem Dzyuba, two delightful finishes from Denis Cheryshev and a superb Aleksandr Golovin freekick claimed the spoils.

In the other Group A game, a decision to leave Liverpool star Mo Salah on the bench spectacularly backfired when Uruguay centre back Jose Gimenez broke Egyptian hearts with an 89th minute bullet header for a 1-0 victory. In Group B, Morocco suffered last ditch heartache when substitute Aziz Bouhaddouz scored a 91st minute own goal to hand victory to a defensive minded Iran outfit. Both games though were eclipsed when giants Portugal and Spain strode out in Sochi at the Fisht Olympic Stadium. There was much hype for this clash of the titans and it was a game that did not disappoint. Ronaldo, playing in his fourth World Cup, finally produced on the biggest stage of all with a spectacular hat-trick. But this was not just a Ronaldo’s ‘one-man show’ because Spain, stunned by the sensational sacking of head coach Julen Lopetegui 48 hours earlier for not informing the Spanish hierarchy of his decision to take up the vacant role at Real Madrid, responded superbly going in at half time 2-1 down. Diego Costa leveled Ronaldo’s fourth-minute penalty then poked home another equaliser to atone for a horrendous error from ‘keeper David de Gea just before the break. Nacho fired the Spaniards into the lead with a stunning volley from the edge of the penalty area that looked to have settled a brilliant game.

But Ronaldo had the last word with a spectacular free kick two minutes from time for his 51st career hat-trick and 51st World Cup treble. History was made when the World Cup’s first VAR goal was awarded in the Group C clash between France versus Australia. Antoine Griezmann fired home a first half penalty after the assistant referee ruled Australia’s Josh Risdon had brought down the French striker. A spot kick by Mile Jedinak leveled matters before Paul Pogba’s lob was deflected in off Aussie full-back Aziz Behich 10 minutes from time. In the other group game, Denmark earned a hard-fought win over an unlucky Peru with a clinical strike from Yussaf Poulsen just before the hour. Earlier the South American side, who bossed long periods of the game, missed a chance to take the lead when Christian Cueva fired a penalty over the cross bar. The Danes were indebted though to a wonder-save from Leicester ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichal with a one-handed reflex stop from Edinson Flores to secure the points. Over in Group D, Argentina talisman Lionel Messi was expected to drive his team to victory but the footballing maestro missed a second half penalty, which proved costly as his team could only draw 1-1 against a well-organised Iceland team. The goals in a 1-1 draw came midway through the half when

Sergio Aguero struck a great goal on 19 minutes only for Alfred Finnbogason to level four minutes later. Meanwhile, Croatia stole a march on the group with a 2-0 win against Nigeria courtesy of an Oghenekaro Etebo own goal and Luka Midric penalty. The Brazilians looked to have a grip on their Group E clash with the Swiss when Philippe Coutinho curled in a long-range effort on 20 minutes. But Switzerland are renowned for their battling qualities and leveled the match early in the second

half when Steven Zuber nodded home a early in the second half to deny the bookies top tip. A brilliant free kick from Aleksander Kolorov broke the resistance of Costa Rica who face an uphill task in forthcoming group games. Mexico registered the biggest shock of the championship by deservedly defeating a ponderous German side with lightening counter attacks and should have earned a more comprehensive triumph in Group G. The result has put the Germans under pressure but they are far

Write Joachim Low’s team off at your peril. Sweden had cause to thank the video assistant referee for a hardfought victory over South Korea in the other group clash. Andreas Granqvist fired home the only goal from the spot after

In England’s group, highly fancied Belgium got off to a comfortable start with a 3-0 win over first time participants Panama. saw off 10-man Columbia for their first World Cup win on European soil in Group H. The South Americans saw red when Carlos Sanchez was sent off for handling Shingi Kagawa’s goal bound shot on only six minutes. The dismissal was the second fastest in history. Kagawa fired home the spot kick, Juan Qunitero equalised before the break before Yuya Osako nodded home the winner from a corner in the second half. Senegal picked up a first win by an African nation when they defeated group top seeds Poland 2-1 in the final game from the first round of matches. The Senegalese opened the scoring thanks to a huge slice of luck with a diverted shot by Idrissa Gueye which took a huge deflection off Thiago Cionek before half time. After doubling the lead following an extraordinary defensive blunder, M’Baye Niang capitalising on a dreadful back pass after rejoining play following an injury. Poland scored a late goal through a Grzegorz Krychowiak header but could not find an equaliser. England could face either Japan

or Senegal in the next round. Russia all but sealed a second round spot thanks to the best start by a host nation in the history of the World Cup when they backed up their first victory. Egypt, with Mo Salah in the side, crumbled after going a goal down to a fortuitous own goal from Ahmed Fathi who diverted Roman Zobnin’s shot into his net early in

Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst, Sir Alf Ramsey. These are the English footballing legends of yesteryear. But this year, Gareth Southgate and co. have the chance to join that elite club of English heroes. Harry Kane’s stoppage-time winner delivered England’s answer to Belgium’s earlier win against Panama and gave them their first opening-game win at a major tournament in 12 years. England needed the victory to build on the platform of good PR and the positive mood at their Zelenogorsk training camp and, most importantly, to ensure they were not instantly on the back foot in Russia. The game was filled with chances galore for England and Harry Kane finally put one away in the 11th minute after Tunisia keeper Mouez Hassen, who went off injured in the first half, clawed out John Stones’ header. Although England were on the front foot, Tunisia equalised from the penalty spot against the run of play after Kyle Walker was penalised for an elbow on Fakhreddine Ben Youssef. Tunisia dug in to frustrate England in the second half but

Kane was the match-winner with a late header from Harry Maguire’s flick, securing a vital win. But, for me, the game was a relatively positive one for England. The defence was mainly secured at the back, with the occasional miscalculation of position of Kyle Walker, which led to the penalty and Harry Maguire losing possession a couple of times, but overall the defence was solid and also provided an attacking threat thanks to Maguire’s aerial abilities. The midfield was tight and barely gave the ball away and there was an impressive cameo from Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Tall, powerful and elegant with the freedom of expression to receive the ball and take chances with it. But England’s attack was brilliant in creating chances but lacked the end product. Raheem Sterling and Jesse Lingard missed golden opportunities, which against a higher ranked team, would’ve come back to bite them. Jesse Lingard is usually assured in front of goal and can still be relied on, but there is no escaping the brutal truth that Raheem Sterling’s England goal record is wretched and must improve soon. The Manchester City player has scored only twice

in 39 internationals and has not scored in his past 21. But England’s saviour Kane, grabbed two goals here that were perfect illustrations of the calm and predator’s instinct that mark him out as special, and took his England record to an outstanding 15 goals in 25 games. Yet, with all these positives, I am struggling to understand as to how Southgate will adapt England’s style of play against a more impressive team, such as Belgium next Thursday. Let’s not forget Tunisia haven’t won a World Cup match since 1978 and Belgium are filled to the brim with top class Premier League players who know how to play against a team full of English players. The answer? Marcus Rashford. When the young Manchester United lad came on in the second half, England started to play with more flair and I thought the 20 year old made an impact as soon as he came on the pitch. The blistering speed and his impeccable dribbling can cause defenders nightmares and considering Belgium’s centre backs are quality but not the fastest, Rashford could easily exploit that weakness of theirs. Now, at the start of the World

cup, I thought the winner of this World Cup was bound to be either Brazil or Germany. The way those two teams play and their form going into the tournament really staked their claim as the favourites in Russia. But after Germany’s shocking defeat to Mexico and Brazil’s poor draw to Switzerland, the two footballing powerhouses seem to look a bit shaky. Germany just couldn’t find a way through the Mexicans as once they went one goal up, nearly every player bar the striker was in their own half. Brazil started off well and Phillipe Coutinho scored an absolute peach of a goal to get Brazil’s quest to secure a 6th World Cup underway, but Switzerland fought back and earnt a surprising point. Portugal and Spain played out the match of the tournament so far as the game finished 3-3, with Cristiano Ronaldo proving why he deserves to be called the greatest player in the world, as he scored an extremely impressive hat trick to earn a point for the reigning European champions, including an incredible free kick from just outside the box. Although, the other player battling it out with Ronaldo for the

the second half. Two goals in three minutes from Denis Cheryshev and Artem Dzyuba sealed the win, Salah scoring Egypt’s consolation goal from a penalty. The action is set to continue and a full round up or second group games will be in next week’s World Cup edition.

title of the world’s greatest player, Lionel Messi, didn’t help out his claim, as he missed a penalty as his Argentina side were surprisingly held by debutants Iceland. With all the top footballing nations either losing or only managing a draw, this gives hope for the World Cup to return to the home of football for the first time since 1966 and finally stop the pain English football fans have been feeling for the past 50 years.

Anti-Intermarriage ti-Semitism?

21 JUNE 2018

THE JEWISH WEEKLY

or

An-

Dear Rabbi I am of Palestinian/Lebanese origin (Christian) born in Haifa, Palestine. In 1957 I met, in London, a Czech man who endured the camps during the war. We fell deeply in love and married, ignoring remarks like yours against intermarriage, like your recent remark where you advised a young man to “dump his Gentile girlfriend.” From the day of our meeting he was adamant we had to marry. I was 18 he was 29. For 62 years we lived and loved our years together, having 3 excellent caring children and 7 amazing grandchildren. Not a day passed without him telling me how much he loved me, how lucky he was that we met, how happy he was. His children and grandchildren loved him dearly in return. They were the family he yearned for, hav-

ing lost all his own Czech family in the Camps. Six months ago he died in our house, with me by his side. We are heartbroken and tears are never far from our eyes....the children and grandchildren struggle, for my sake, to stem the tears whenever he is mentioned, and he is mentioned because the house and the family all have him within them. He was 91 and was loved and cherished all his life by me his “Gentile” wife. Yet you, supposedly, a Man of God would have denied him that. Unfortunately antisemitism is on the rise. With your approach I can see why. Julie Dear Julie I am truly sorry for your loss and convey to you my sincerest condolence. As you clearly take umbrage to my statements against intermarriage, it necessitates that I reply in kind. Of course, because of the nature of your loving remarks about

Tehillim Very often when a person’s situation seems completely hopeless, he will lose all hope and utterly despair. However King David did not lose any hope when he was seized by the Pelishtim in Gath, totally alone and abandoned by his own people. His trust in Hashem was completely unshaken, and this act serves as a tremendous lesson to all of us in today’s world, which can sometimes appear quite hopeless to many people. ‘Show me favour O G-d, for men yearn to swallow me, all day long they oppress me with war… All day long they do battle with me.’ If one analyses the life of King David, one will see a troubled life beset by much sorrow and misfortune. Yet he is recognised as one of the greatest Jews who ever lived. It is incumbent upon man to work on himself no matter how big the problem may seem to be. There were a few exceptional men throughout Jewish history that never sinned. King David’s father Yishai was one of them.

Psalm 56

However, as the sands of time has passed, those men, great as they undoubtably were, are not constantly remembered as the greatest ever Jews. The greatest ever Jews that all kids grow up learning about over and over again were the 3 Avot, Moshe Rabbenu, Aharon Hakohen, Yosef and King David, who also make up the 7 Uspizim from Succot. They all sinned at times. Moshe hit the rock, King David sinned with Batsheva and the others committed averot too. However, despite one or two sins, they repented and rose to a much greater level than any of the other men who never sinned at all. We should take great heart from this lesson and realize that even if we occasional slip up in our Judaism, we can repent, work hard and grow to reach great heights, Amen.

your husband, I might be deemed to be insensitive to your loss, so let me make it perfectly clear, that is not the case. However, to be a Jew by very definition means to embrace a faith. To embrace a faith – any faith means that there must be a Divine mandate by which this faith ought to be conducted. In the Jewish faith one of those requirements is that Jews marry fellow Jews. Judaism, or any faith for that matter, is not a pick and mix, whereby I choose which laws appeal to me and reject those that aren’t comfortable. Every religion is premised on the principle of think what you can do for G-d and not what G-d can do for you. There’s a plethora of reasons why intermarriage makes no sense, not least because when there is intermarriage then a couple of generations down the line, all traces of Judaism will become so utterly diluted to a point where

This Tehillim is in memory of Meir Pinchos ben Yechiel Mecham

it will be completely lost. In your case, by Jewish law your kids are not Jewish – I am going to safely assume that some (all?) of them married non-Jews and I think you’ll agree, your great grandchildren will only know what Yom Kippur is if they study it in school, or know what Chanukah is if they will watch some reference to it in the movies. Your most disturbing remark is the suggestion that my stance against intermarriage is what encourages Anti-Semitism. Astonishingly, you also reference the fact that your husband’s family were wiped out in the Holocaust. Ask yourself Julie, do you think, had your husband been married to you, a Christian, before the war, that would have made a darn difference to Hitler? Do you think he would not have been taken off to the camps as you describe? Do you really believe that assimilation is the answer to Anti-Semitism? Because in my history books, Hitler didn’t discriminate. If you were Jewish, regardless of whom you were married to, you were doomed. So intermarriage is not the answer. On the contrary. As has been said time and again – it is only when you respect yourself that others will respect you as well. If you feel the need to blend into the masses and become something that you’re not – i.e. you don’t respect yourself – that has usually had a counter-productive effect. Besides, then, as per above, you’ll invariably obliterate all traces of Judaism – effectively giving Hitler a posthumous victory. Your letter is very touching and emotional and I am not underappreciating that. But I am giving you the cold rational facts. How Do I Deal With Campus Hate? Dear Rabbi My son is due to go to university next year but as a Jewish mother I am very concerned for him. I know he has to go, but we are a traditional Jewish family – not particularly observant. I know there is plenty of Anti-Semitism on campus and one of two outcomes is likely. Either my son will walk around scared all day, or more likely, he’ll just pretend he isn’t Jewish for convenience sake and that will have all sorts of longer term consequences. I don’t know what, if any solution there is for kids like him today?

Nessy Dear Nessy While Anti-Semitism on campus has been a lingering problem for some time, it seems to have become more socially acceptable than ever. To be sure, this is not a uniquely British problem – many campuses in America are enduring similar hatred. Back in 2016, the ex-president of the National Union of Students was accused of ‘anti-Semitic rhetoric’ Melantha Chittenden, the national chairman of Labour Students, was recently quoted as saying the problem is widespread while also blaming most of the problem on her own Labour party. As a result, some students are avoiding their universities of choice because of the “hate” reputation on campus. If that is what our world looks like in this 21st century then we have a massive problem. A Labour spokesman said “all complaints are taken seriously and fully investigated.” Like his leader, Mr Corbyn, there’s so much talk and no delivery. We pine for the day there’s a change of leadership within Labour just so that we can feel more comfortable being Jewish again in this country. But, to be sure, the problem is there regardless of political leadership. Should that deter your son from going? No. Should he keep a low profile? Also not. There are amazing couples on campuses up and down the country doing outstanding work with the Jewish students. They are the antidote – and you ought to encourage your son to hook up with these incredible campus Rabbis and Rebbetzins where they will not only not feel the heat for being Jewish, but have their identity fortified and feel encouraged to walk tall as proud Jews.

variety of reasons. Dr Henry (Hillel) Abramson (b. 1963) calls his legacy ‘ambiguous’ and also describes him as “a puzzle wrapped up in an enigma”. Though most of his career was spent in Rome, his childhood was spent in Jerusalem. Josephus’ family descended from the High Priest Yehoyariv, and they served in the first of the 24 mishmarot (priestly watches) who rotated duties in the Temple. The family was so well regarded within Jerusalem that even after Josephus became associated with the Romans, his works were not censured by the Jews, on the merit of his illustrious forbearers. Josephus’s mother was connected with the house of the Hasmoneans.

After serving in Jerusalem as a kohen, at the age of 26 he journeyed to Rome. His writings do not give the reader a clear reason for his mission, but he does share the story of being shipwrecked off the coast of Italy and having to swim for his life through the night.

In the next article, we will relate how a Romanized Josephus returned home in the midst of a rebellion.

Aaron of Lincoln (c.11251186) was considered to have been even wealthier than King Henry II (11541189). ‘Aaron the Jew’s House’ or ‘the Norman House’ is England’s oldest standing residence. Aaron was a successful trader in wool and corn, as well as armour and property which he took as surety on loans. Aaron is first recorded in 1166 as a creditor to Henry for £616 12s 8d. It was upon his death that Henry established Aaron’s Exchequer, in order to recover £15,000 in bonds. Despite the imposition of tallages and the beginning of the blood libels, Jewish life in England was less disrupted than in mainland Europe. However, the deaths of Aaron of Lincoln (1186) and Henry II (1189) marked a watershed in the fate of England’s Jews.

Sunday 1190, one of Aaron’s creditors, Richard Malebysse, broke into the house of the Benedict of York, slaughtered all its occupants, removed their belongings and set fire to the building. Over subsequent days, Josce’s residence was burnt and its occupants murdered. Many of York’s frightened Jews fled to the castle, where the warden allowed them into Clifford’s Tower. For several days, Clifford’s Tower was besieged by a mob. The Jews were given the choice of conversion or death. On Friday 16 March 1190, the day before Shabbat Hagadol, Rabbi Yom 4Tov reminded those trapped inside of Masada. He persuaded them to take their own lives rather than perish at the hands of the rabble. Josce killed his wife and sons before his life was taken by Rabbi Yom Tov, who finally took his own. In all, 153 people died, setting fire to the Tower as they lay dying. The few survivors were murdered, even though they had chosen baptism. Jewish moneylending deeds were burnt in a bonfire in the middle of the cathedral. Under Richard I, Aaron’s Exchequer became the Exchequer of the Jews. With this came the requirement of registration of Jewish bonds and copies being deposited in the Archae chests. These records facilitated the estimation of Jewish wealth and the imposition of tallages. Through several bureaucratic measures, Jewish life was concentrated, and trade regulated. The mechanism for the destruction of the community was set in place.

Between September 1189 and March 1190, amidst Crusader fervour as Richard departed on the Third Crusade, several Jewish communities came under attack. Jews had lived in York from 1130. Rabbi Eliyahu and Rabbi Yom Tov of Joigny were amongst its scholars. Josce of York was one of its wealthiest citizens. Aaron of Lincoln had substantial business interests there. On the eve of Palm

Richard I had insisted that no Jews be present at his coronation. According to the Benedictine monk, Matthew Paris (1200-59), this was because of “the magic arts which Jews and some women notoriously exercise at Royal coronations”. Nonetheless, some Jews who had brought lavish gifts wished to present them and entered Westminster Hall. They were spotted and violently ejected. Some were massacred, others were arrested, stripped, flogged and given the choice to convert or die.

Here is where the first of our historical challenges arises. All we really know about Josephus is what he tells us himself. Mixed in his History of the Jewish War is a personal account of Josephus himself. It would seem that he was not above embellishing his own history as indicated by one of the first autobiographical details he shares with the reader. Josephus tells us that he and his brother Matthias were educated for the priesthood in one of the

Parshat Chukat Moshe was taught the laws of the Parah Adumah – the red cow. Moshe’s sister, Miriam, died. In her lifetime, Hashem made a miracle that in the middle of a dessert which is usually dry as a bone, a well would provide water to the Jews in her honour. Once she died, the well dried up. They complained that they needed water and Hashem commanded Moshe to speak to the rock and tell it to produce water. Moshe became very upset with the Jews for grumbling and in his anger, he hit the rock. Water did come out of the rock but Hashem told Moshe that because he did not listen to Him and hit the rock instead of speaking to it, neither he nor his brother, Aaron would be allowed to enter Eretz Yisrael. Aaron died at Har Hahar and his son, Elazar, took over his position as Kohen Gadol. The Jews once again grumbled about Hashem and Moshe and they were punished by having poisonous snakes come into their camp. Hashem instructed Moshe to put a snake made of brass on a tall pole. Everyone who looked at the metal snake would be looking upwards towards Heaven and in the zechut of looking towards Hashem, those people would be cured of the poisonous bite of the real snake.

The Waves of War

PART 8

BY CHAYA SANDLER The princess successfully tricks the king and gets thrown out onto the streets along with Hamish. Now they must help her brother escape from the dungeons so that they can rescue their kingdom. The princess attempted to dust herself off after being thrown down the steps. After a second she stopped. She was so filthy anyway… Now what? She looked around for Hamish, where was he? The plan was to meet outside the palace, neither of them knew where else to go. She waited. And waited. After an hour, the realisation dawned on her. He wasn’t coming back. Her shoulders slumped and she leaned back against the wall. She closed her eyes, the sun was blinding her but she had no energy to move. Hamish had probably ran off as soon as he could. She had really thought that… but a leopard doesn’t change its spots and a pirate doesn’t give up his pillaging so easily. Still, she really had believed that… no time to wallow. She got up, unsteadily, where to now? She decided to walk and wherever she ended up, at least it was better than sitting here. She chose a darkened alley. Chances were, the revolutionaries and anti- monarchists of the kingdom would be willing to help her. There were always those disgruntled with the kingdom, all she had to do was find some.

Hamish felt a sharp pain in his left ankle as he was thrown out of the palace. The sharp flash became a streak that shot up his leg. He

tried to stand but he couldn’t. His ankle must have been broken. When he looked around, he realised his predicament had just gone from bad to worse. They had thrown him out of a different entrance to the princess. He had to get to her. He stood up and nearly screamed. Ok, not working. Next. He was by a river. There was nothing he could use – but there was a boat approaching. Figuring that he had nothing to lose except his life which was hanging by a thread as it was, he forced himself up and waved. “Ahoy there!” As the boat turned, his heart dropped to his feet. It was his old crew. He could See the revulsion on their faces, hear the jeers n their voices, even from the shore. They probably weren’t about to give him a warm welcome home right now. The Captain jumped overboard with a catlike grace. If Hamish was usually awkward and gangly, then right now he was outdoing himself. He wobbled on his unsteady leg and toppled just as the Captain reached him. The laughter echoed through him as the Captain placed his boot

firmly and squarely in the centre of his chest. “Well, well, well. Look what the tide coughed up. If it isn’t old Hamish.” Hamish squeezed his eyes shut and made a decision. If he hadn’t been treated with dignity all his life, at least he ‘d die with dignity now. So as the Captain raised his cutlass, Hamish jerked and rolled away. The Captain went sprawling and let out an infuriated yell. Hamish knew that impatient yelp well, and he hated it. Fear coursing through his veins gave him an energy he knew he’d be paying for later. He used his good leg to lunge forward and grab the cutlass. He looked up to see the Captain leaping onto him with an outstretched dagger. Using the sword, he swung with all his might and knocked the incredulous Captain into the water. “You are no longer my master. My fate is out of your control.” The Captain was so stunned he couldn’t respond. Hamish turned to the watching crew. They returned his gaze with something akin to respect. He limped towards the stables at the back of the palace. Apparently he warranted no attention for he was paid none.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

And so he made his way to the last stable. There stood the biggest, most aggressive, fearsome horse Hamish had ever seen. She was perfect. He grasped the beam of the stable wall and swung his leg over, ignoring its loud protests. He would have to pay for it later, but for now…. At this point, he was noticed. “OY!” Muttering a quick prayer, he threw himself onto the horse and clung on for dear life. The horse bolted. She smashed through the stable door, trampled over all the stable hands and guards, she careened through the market, upended numerous stalls, upset many a wagon, the roads cleared before him. Where he was heading, he had no idea, but he was getting there fast. The mare ran and ran and eventually Hamish’s leg had enough of being side-lined and made its presence known. Eventually he lost his grip and fell off, rolling and rolling down a sand dune and into a dessert valley. There he lay until two faces appeared. Or was it four? They were talking to him, or… there was some sort of noise… the pain overwhelmed him and he let go, fading into unconsciousness, feeling the wait of his mind slipping away… The price leaned against the cell door, dark curls plastered to his forehead, green eyes downcast. His sister, the boy – Hamish- what chance had they of success. Perhaps if there was time, but even now he could hear the footsteps. They were coming for him and then it would all be over and all hope lost. TO BE CONTINUED

Parshat Chukat

In a nutshell Chukat begins with the laws of the Parah Adumah – the red heifer. The ashes of the Parah Adumah will purify anybody who has come into contact with a corpse. Miriam died and the well which miraculously produced water for the Jews in Miriam’s lifetime, dried up once she died. The Jews began to grumble that they were in dire need of water to quench their thirst. Moshe was

How many squares?

very disenchanted with the Jews for their impatient complaints. Although Hashem had specifically instructed him to speak to the rock and command it to produce water, in Moshe’s anger, he hit the rock. Water did indeed emanate from the rock but as he had acted in direct contravention to Hashem’s command that he speak to the rock and not hit it, Hashem decided that neither Moshe nor his brother, Aaron, would

merit being permitted entry to the Land of Israel. Indeed, Aaron subsequently died. The Jews criticised the manna, the food which Hashem had been graciously supplying them in the dessert. Due to their lack of gratitude to, and faith in G-d, the Jews were punished with an invasion of poisonous snakes. Moshe erected a copper snake and all who looked heavenward in the

direction of the snake’s head would be healed of the venomous poison of the real snake. The Jews claimed victory against the Emorites who had refused them rights of passage into their land as a means of entry into the Holy Land. They were also victorious in the war waged against them by Og, King of Bashan. Thus, they arrived at the Bank of the Jordan River, close to their destination.

Students can see three glasses on the left that are full, and three on the right that are empty. They can only move one glass to make a row of alternately full and empty glasses. Which one do they move?

News Bites GIANT SINKHOLES ALONG THE SHORES OF DEAD SEA CAUSE CONCERN

Though there are numerous saltwater lakes around the world, none can compare to the Dead Sea. Located between Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian territories in the Middle East, the water of this landlocked lake boasts salt levels almost ten times that of oceans. The unusual salinity can be attributed to the fact that there is no outlet for the minerals to leave, causing them to accumulate. The same is not true of the water level, which remains constant due an almost even inflow from the Jordan River and loss through evaporation. While the high salinity is deadly for marine and plant life, it is perfectly safe and even therapeutic for humans, not to mention fun. That’s because the higher density salt water helps increase buoyancy allowing visitors to float atop and relax. It is no wonder that the area is a popular tourist destination. However, that may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the massive sinkholes that are engulfing the lake’s shores. Geologists report that the region is currently home to over 3,000 sinkholes, some as much as 80 ft. deep and the numbers are increasing daily. The reason behind this irreversible dangerous phenomenon is the Dead Sea’s ever decreasing level of water. Until the 1960’s the Jordan River annually dumped about 450 billion gallons of water into the Dead Sea. Today it brings only a fraction of that.

That’s because, Israel, Jordan, and Syria have been rerouting large amounts for drinking and agricultural use. To make matters worse, local mining companies regularly pump out water from the already depleted lake to extract minerals that are used to make fertilizers and other products. As the Dead Sea shrinks, large amounts of sediments and large deposits of salt are collected along the shore. When these minerals come in contact with fresh groundwater from rainfall or runoff from the mountains, it causes them to dissolve. As the salt melts away, it leaves behind large empty spaces beneath the surface. Eventually, there is not enough material left and without warning, the ground collapses, resulting in what we call sinkholes. Though the most logical solution to stabilize the situation would be to allow the Jordan River to flow freely into the Dead Sea again, that is not possible given the water needs of the locals. Hence, Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian territories have devised an alternate plan. Called the Red Sea-Dead Sea conduit, the 180-kilometer long pipeline will pump two billion cubic meters of water from the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. Along the way, some of the water will be desalinated for human consumption and also used to produce hydroelectric power

14-YEAR-OLD ORCA WHALE LEARNS TO SAY “HELLO” AND A LOT MORE! A 14-year-old with a vocabulary comprising four or five rudimentary words may not sound impressive. However, it sure is when the speaker happens to be an orca, or killer, whale! The amazing discovery, along with the recording of the vocalization, was unveiled in a January 31 study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The research team, led by José Zamorano-Abramson, a postdoctoral researcher at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, began recording the 14-year mammal, who resides at Marineland in Antibes, France,

in 2014. The experiment was conducted to test the theory that killer whales learn sounds from social settings. Wikie, who has spent most of her life at the aquatic park, is accustomed to mimicking her trainer’s actions in exchange for fish, and was, therefore, the perfect candidate for the job. The team began by presenting Wikie with the sounds she was already familiar with — like a noisy breath or a piercing peeping sound. They then introduced new sounds the mammal had never been exposed to before. These included mimicking the squeak

of a creaky door and the sound of an elephant call. While Wikie stepped up to the challenge each time, the ultimate test to prove the hypothesis was to see if the killer whale could replicate human sounds. To investigate, the researchers introduced Wikie to a few simple words: “Ah ah,” “hello,” “bye-bye,” “one-two-three,” and the name of her trainer, “Amy.” To their delight, she mimicked “hello” instantly. Though the others took a little longer, the smart mammal was eventually able to master them all. The cheeky whale even learned how to blow a raspberry! The researchers, who compared the recordings of the original and imitation sounds and successfully tested them with human listeners, say that Wikie’s imitations, while not “perfect,” are definitely “recognizable.”

She feels that Hashem wills her to enjoy His world and to ensure that in so doing, she helps others to do so too. Consequently, despite having a full-time job, she is eager to share her experiences and conclusions with other singles. During the period in which she’d abstained from dating, it had struck Tzipora that it is a truth universally acknowledged that looking good usually ensures that one feels good. Whilst never obese, Tzipora had been convinced that if she took care of and pride in the way in which she presented herself, she would quash her feelings of inferiority. She’d resolved to go on a diet professionally recommended to her and in 2 months, she had lost 20 lbs. She has now undergone a course which has enabled her to counsel

others who are overweight as to how to maintain this diet as she feels that it could really make a difference to the lives of those suffering from low self-worth. In a world where people are often disparaging and judgmental, she confesses that it has been daunting to divulge details of her private life and travails to others in the Orthodox community. However, she feels that her experiences and the conclusions which she has derived therefrom could motivate and inspire others. Undoubtedly, even those sceptical of her decision to distance herself from the dating scene for a while, will be touched and encouraged by the tenacity of her undeniable faith which has bred sentiments of contentment and fulfilment within her that many married people are still striving to achieve. Tzipora has triumphed over the adversity entailed in being single in a community where her peers are predominantly married; where singledom is much misunderstood and some struggle to refrain from blaming singles for their circumstance. To some extent, Tzipora Zelmanowitz is an unsung heroine of our times. If you would like to nominate a ‘Woman Of Worth’ to be featured on this page then please email micaela@ thejewishweekly.com

TIPS AND TRICKS – STAY COOL IN THE SUNSHINE Jewish Weekly aims to source the most genius, time saving and useful hacks for you every week, so watch this space!

If you want to stay cool in the sunshine, check out these handy summer time tips: Invest in a hat –The sun has got his hat on, and so should you if you are sitting outside in the sunshine. A wide brimmed hat or cap is best as it will keep your face out of the sun too. Drink lots – Staying hydrated is very important so drinking water and other liquids is key. Although ice cold water quenches your thirst, it is actually better to drink water at room temperature as this allows our bodies to rehydrate quicker as it is absorbed faster.

Wear light colours – Sunlight is absorbed by dark colours, whereas it doesn’t absorb from light, so to keep cool, stay away from the black and dark colours.

Lie on the floor – When it all gets too much, go and have a lie down… on the floor!! Hot air rises, so in theory the lower you are the cooler you should be, although this may not be the most comfortable solution!

Avoid big meals – easier said than done especially on Shabbat, but eating large meals can make you feel hotter and the energy needed for digestion will make more body heat. Eat small portions.

Don’t be your number one fan – Although fanning yourself with you hand might feel a little cooler, the amount of energy you use to fan yourself will actually raise your body temperature in the long run.
