CPS BLOCK AL-QUDS DAY CASE 05 JULY 2018/ 22 TAMMUZ 5778
BY LEAH WAXLER
The Campaign Against Antisemitism is taking legal advice after the Crown Prosecution Service blocked a private prosecution of the leader of the annual “Al Quds Day” pro-Hezballah parade in Central London. The case was due to be heard next week. In 2017 Nazim Ali enraged Jewish organisations with vitriolic comments including, “Some of the biggest corporations who are supporting the Conservative Party are Zionists” and ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The parade is notorious for demonstrators marching in support of the terrorist organisation, which seeks to murder Jews worldwide. CAA’s private prosecution centred on Ali’s statements over a portable public address system at last year’s parade.

“This decision by the CPS is an appalling betrayal of British Jews,” Gideon Falter, CAA chairman told The Jewish Weekly. “We are now taking advice on using judicial review proceedings to force the CPS to either prosecute Mr Ali itself or let us get on with the job. “We have called for zero tolerance enforcement of the law against anti-Semitism and that is what politicians have promised, but it seems that the CPS is not only abandoning British Jews, it is intent on actively intervening to block us when we stand up for ourselves. “Whilst we prepare to take action in the courts, the Attorney General must urgently investigate the behaviour of the CPS and its horrifying resistance to prosecuting anti-Semites.” CPS declined to prosecute Ali last year, which is why CAA launched a private prosecution.

Prince committed to ‘lifelong’ peace project BY LEAH WAXLER
Middle East peace is a “lifelong” project for Prince William a British tabloid newspaper has reported. The highly regarded Palace source quoted last weekend in the Sunday Mirror that Prince William’s historic five-day visit to the region made a “profound impact” on him. The Duke of Cambridge was not quoted directly but the source claimed he was moved by the suffering endured by youngsters and was determined to solve the region’s long time mutual hostility. Prior to the official visit, the second in line to the throne reportedly requested a history of the conflict and previous peace talks from staff. And at its conclusion, he reportedly told aides the visit was the start of something new and he would honour commitments to people he met. The source added that current politicians could impact on the younger generation for a few years whereas his duty was for life. Prince William ended his tour of Jordan, Israel and Palestinian Occupied Territories in Jerusalem. The ‘non-political’ trip saw the Duke meet Israeli and Palestinian leaders aside from visiting religious and iconic sites where every
step of his sojourn was closely scrutinised by the worlds’ press. And during a packed schedule he met people from a cross-section of life. Prince William began his last day in Jerusalem’s Old City by laying flowers at the grave of his great-grandmother, Princess Alice, who saved a Jewish family during the Holocaust. Accompanied by a Russian Orthodox clergyman, he was following in the footsteps of his father, Prince Charles, and grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, in paying homage. UK Ambassador, Mark Regev, tweeted, “A truly remarkable woman who risked her life to save Jews during the Holocaust honoured by Yad Vashem as ‘Righteous Among the Nations”. At the Western Wall, The Duke wore a blue yamulka and was accompanied by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis. And he followed in the tradition of placing a note inside the Western Wall, prior to signing the guestbook. In it the 36-year-old Prince noted, “May the God of peace bless this region and all the world with peace”. “Today we experienced a moment of history which will live long in the memory of Jews around the world,” said the Chief Rabbi who described him as a “figurehead” for a next generation.

“The Western Wall stands at the epicentre of our faith. “To see the future monarch come to pay his respects was a remarkable gesture of friendship and a sign of the Duke’s regard for the sanctity of Jerusalem.” Prince William then went on to Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites before returning to London. Earlier in his whistle-stop trip, he visited Yad Vashem calling for a “just and lasting peace”. Prior to his departure from the Holocaust Centre, he left a poignant message: “Every name, photograph and memory recorded here is a tragic reminder of the unimaginable human cost of the Holocaust and the immense loss suffered by the Jewish people.” He added: “The story of the Holocaust is one of darkness and despair, questioning humanity itself. But the actions of those few who took great risks to help others are a reminder of the human capacity for love and hope.” He continued,” We must never forget the Holocaust – the murder of 6 million men,
women and children, simply because they were Jewish. We all have a responsibility to remember and to teach future generations about the horrors of the past so that they can never reoccur.” No public statements were made after an audience with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but when President Reuven Rivlin welcomed him, Israel’s Head of State told the Prince he was “writing a new page in history.” And he appealed for Prince William to convey a message of peace to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah during his visit. In a televised audience, with the Israeli President, Prince William said he hoped peace could be achieved, he also wanted to absorb and understand the different issues, cultures and religions during his visit. Turning his attentions to the Middle East conflict, Prince William commented, “Never has hope and reconciliation been more needed for a just and lasting peace.” A week on from his Middle East journey, reaction around the world has been positive.

IDF halt terrorists crossing Gaza border BY ADAM MOSES
Israel Defence Forces stopped four terrorists attempts to cross the southern Gaza border and set ablaze a military post near Rafah on Monday. One died while a second was taken to hospital critically wounded. The IDF detained a third for questioning but the fourth perpetrator escaped. “Terrorists crossed the border fence into Israeli territory equipped with cutters and flammable materials and tried to set fire to a vacant sniper position,” IDF said in a statement. “An IDF force identified the infiltration, monitored the incident then opened fire in pursuit of the terrorists.” The spokesman added, “During the incident, the IDF force reported hearing gunfire in its direction. The force acted quickly against the violation of Israeli sovereignty and the attempt to sabotage security infrastructure.” “Hamas is responsible for
everything that happens in the strip and anything that comes out of the strip and is behind the attempts to cross the fence and sabotage security infrastructure. “The IDF views such incidents gravely and will continue operating against them in a decisive manner.” Ongoing events in the region have seen a no-confidence vote in the Knesset held over the Gaza Strip strategy. Minister Gila Gamliel noted that 450 incendiary kites had been intercepted by IDF drones, 260 Palestinians had crossed the border fence causing over 200 fires and 47,000 acres of land had been destroyed. Away from Gaza, Israeli forces were positioned in the Syrian Golan Heights due to “developments” near the border with Israel on Sunday. An IDF statement noted it will continue its “non-intervention policy” where Israeli sovereignty or civilians are threatened. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the situation at his weekly Cabinet meeting. “Regarding southern Syria, we
will continue to defend our borders,” he noted. “We will extend humanitarian assistance to the extent of our abilities. “We will not allow entry into our territory and we will demand that the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement with the Syrian army be strictly upheld.” He added: “I am in continual contact with the White House and Kremlin on this matter.

Charedi men force delay to Austrian flight BY LEAH WAXLER
An Austrian Airlines flight from Tel Aviv to Vienna was delayed by 40 minutes when a number of Charedi men refused to sit next to female passengers last Friday. A similar incident occurred only last month when an El Al flight from New York to Israel was delayed by over an hour after four Charedi men refused to take assigned seats next to women. In this latest flight, a group of 26 ultra-orthodox men had been scheduled to fly to Vienna on Poland’s national airline LOT but switched airlines when that flight was cancelled. Stewardesses reportedly tried to convince men assigned to seats next to women to sit down but they refused. The pilot of the plane eventually left his cockpit to request a number women to move seats. The flight was delayed 30 minutes in Austrian airspace after missing the morning rush hour. “We regret any inconvenience which may have been caused to our passengers,’ and Austrian Airlines statement noted. “The flight was delayed due to
the boarding and seating of passengers of the LOT airline whose flight had been cancelled and who boarded the plane at the last moment. “Since it was a large group of passengers, 26 people, the cabin crew did everything in its power to help the passengers as much as it could.” The El Al ‘New York’ fiasco was resolved when two women eventually changed seats enabling the flight to take off. But the repercussions saw El Al chief executive Gonen Usishkin announce the airline would “immediately” remove any passenger who refused to sit next to another for any reason. “In future any passenger who refuses to sit beside another passenger will immediately be removed from
“The Defence Minister and Chief-of-Staff are in similar contact with counterparts.” Netanyahu also noted the situation regarding sanctions being implemented against Iran. “The Iranian economy is at a low point,” he reportedly said. “Iran is investing billions of dollars in financing terrorism in the region and around the world, and in aggression in the region, instead of investing them in the Iranian
the flight,” commented Usishkin. His decision followed top Israeli tech company NICE Systems announcing it would not fly its employees on the airline due to gender discrimination. The seating issue is ongoing because an Israeli court ruled EL AL could not ask women to move seats to accommodate a man not wishing to sit next to a woman only 12 months ago. The ruling followed a case brought by Holocaust survivor and retired lawyer Renee Rabinowitz. The judge ruled the airline must declare it is forbidden for a crew member to ask a passenger to change seats at the request of another passenger based on gender. El Al staff received training on how to deal with such an incident.

people, and the Iranian people are protesting this, and rightly so.” He added, “Our goal is what it always has been, to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons and to break the cash machine that the agreement gave Iran, which finances its aggression in the region including Syria. “At a time when the US is economically striking at the Iranian regime, we are working to prevent Iranian forces and those of its proxies from establishing a military presence anywhere in Syria, and we will continue to do so.” Netanyahu’s comments came a few days after Israel moved humanitarian aid to refugee camps in Syria in an overnight operation. The operation reportedly delivered tents, food, medical supplies and clothing to refugees. “The IDF is monitoring what is going on in southern Syria and is prepared for a variety of scenarios, including continuing to provide humanitarian aid to fleeing Syrians,” a spokesman commented.
Law passed to bar entry to Israel for men identified as Get -refusers A new law has been passed in Israel which will mean that men who refuse to grant their wives a Get will now be detained upon entrance to Israel, this follows a recommendation from Conference of European Rabbis (CER). Over the last few months, the bill was drafted and has since been passed through various Committee stages. Now, the Knesset has passed the bill which will be enshrined in Israeli law. The CER advised an amendment to Israeli divorce law, with the hope of alleviating the plight of Agunot. The new law states that a man who has been identified by a Diaspora Rabbinical court to be a recalcitrant husband may be detained upon entrance to Israel. The amendment strengthens the power of Israeli law to force recalcitrant husbands to comply with the decisions of Diaspora Rabbinical courts and attend divorce proceedings. Detainment upon entrance to Israel acts as a deterrent to these men and will help to prevent Get-refusal. Reflecting on the new law, Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis, said: “This is a huge step
and we are incredibly proud that this idea has now been enshrined in law. It is my fervent prayer that the new law will pave the way to hope for women who seek to live their life free of the shackles of an unwanted and dysfunctional marriage. Get refusal is a form of domestic violence and the global Jewish community must act to protect its women. Israel is the only country whose Rabbinical courts have the power to pressure recalcitrant husbands and the new law will ensure that all men, regardless of their citizenship, feel the force of disgust from the global Jewish community.”

CPS blocks prosecution of Al Quds Day leader CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 discontinue it. “Despite prosecuting many thousands of hate crimes each year, CPS has not yet been known to conduct more than two dozen prosecutions of anti-Semitic hate crimes in any
year.” Only last month, some 1,600 anti-Israel protesters attended the central London rally when there were many anti-Israel slogans heard. Banner signs included ‘End Gaza Genocide’, ‘Boycott Israel’ and ‘Zionism = Racism’.
Ali, who linked the Grenfell Tower tragedy and “Zionists” at last year’s event, led this year’s rally. And there were cheers when he urged supporters to thank Jewish people, including Orthodox Neturei Karta sect members, who attended the rally.
Shaykh Mohammad Saeed Bahmanpour told pro-Palestinian followers Israel should be wiped from the map and Zionists’ days were numbered. And Hezbollah flags unashamedly flew despite 12,000 people signing a petition imploring Home
Secretary Sajid Javid to ban all aspects of the Lebanon-based political party. The controversial flag is allowed if support is only for the ‘political’ wing.
Emunah centre in Israel experiences miraculous escape BY DAVID SAFFER The Emunah Day Care & Family Counselling Centre in Netivot had a lucky escape when an incendiary balloon sent from Gaza landed In its grounds on Monday. Children and staff had miraculously already left the premises. There were no reported injuries and the device failed to burn. But counselling and support has been offered to children and parents worried about the latest incident to hit the region in Israel. The centre is sited between the Gaza border and Beersheba. British Emunah director Deborah Nathan described the terror attempt as a “frightening reality of life” in the South of Israel. “It highlights the ongoing need for the therapy and counselling services Emunah provides for the communities there.”. Israeli Minister Gila Gamliel only a few days earlier had told fellow politicians that 450 incendiary kites had been intercepted by IDF drones whilst 260 Palestinians had
crossed the border causing over 200 fires and destroying 47,000 acres of land. In what is the initial week of summer vacations for Israeli children, many attend Emunah programmes. Shlomo Kessel, World Emunah director explained that the bomb squad was called in to took care of the device. “Thank G-d it didn’t ignite and no damage was caused,” he said. “Under Emunah’s guidance, staff are well-trained on how to work with children and how to act in the case of emergency. “Today staff and children will again practice moving into safe rooms as quickly as possible.” Mr Kessel added, “How sad it is that these are the concerns of teachers and staff, rather than just nurturing and caring for the children.” Ms Nathan emphasised that the impact of such an event is not just immediate. “Whilst we are hugely relieved that no-one was physically hurt and no damage was done to the centre itself, we cannot underestimate the
psychological impact of living with constant terror,” she said. “This effect can be felt through extreme anxiety and PTSD symptoms that last for days, weeks, months or years. “Emunah’s staff at centres across Israel are trained to deal with people of all ages who turn to us in times of deep crisis.” Ms Nathan added, “British Emunah funds counselling services across Israel and in Sderot, our 24hour telephone helpline is a vital lifeline for the elderly and infirm and those too anxious to leave their own homes. “In this particular case, it is so sad that an innocent toy-like a balloon has been turned into a weapon of terror. “We must teach our very young children to stay away from such items and they learn quickly that the world is not always a safe place. “At Emunah we do everything to give them confidence and security so that they can lead normal, happy lives.” In Israel, Emunah is one of the
largest providers of social welfare services with a network of over 200 centres including schools, residential children’s homes, daycare centres and counselling and therapy centres, supporting over 12,000 children and families. Of these projects, 37 are supported by British Emunah. “This year marks our 85th anniversary and its latest fundraising initiative is to raise funds for the much-needed expansion of the Sarah Ronson Crisis and Intervention Centre in Sderot, just 7km from
Gaza, and to meet the increased demand for services at our other centres,” Ms Nathan explained. “The wave of violence on the Gaza border has meant that many more people need Emunah’s services in Sderot and we currently have waiting lists as the existing premises can’t accommodate any more therapists and counsellors. “A new building has been found and we hope to be able to meet the needs of the communities in the south of Israel very soon, if sufficient funds can be raised.”

Anti-Semite Gilad Atzmon makes humiliating apology BY DAVID SAFFER
Anti-Semitic author and saxophonist Gilad Atzmon has been forced into a humiliating capitulation after just two hours in court facing lawyers representing Campaign Against Antisemitism Chairman Gideon Falter. Mr Atzmon, is an anti-Semitism who is reported to have blamed the Grenfell Tower tragedy on “Jerusalemites” as well as reportedly telling university students that “the Jews were expelled from Germany for misbehaving.” He is not shy about his anti-Semitism, telling a Jewish Twitter user in 2014: “I am not a Jew any more. I indeed despise the Jew in me (whatever is left). I absolutely detest the Jew in you.” Following our efforts to have him banned from various musical venues, he penned an article in which he claimed that our Chairman, Gideon
Falter, “fabricated” anti-Semitic incidents as part of a “business plan” to defraud the British taxpayer and earn money for himself. After being sued by Mr Falter for libel, Mr Atzmon attempted to crowdfund “tens of thousands of pounds”, telling his supporters: “I have made the decision to fight this crucial battle for freedom of expression even though this fight poses a real risk of bankrupting me and my family.” However in court Mr Atzmon did not even show his face, instead sending his lawyer to make the implausible argument that he had not meant that Mr Falter was making up anti-Semitic incidents, defrauding taxpayers or profiting personally. After just two hours of argument, High Court Justice Matthew Nicklin issued a preliminary ruling stating that Mr Atzmon had deliberately accused Mr Falter of:
“dishonestly fabricating anti-Semitic incidents; deliberately exaggerating the prevalence of anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic activity (including being too ready to characterise as anti-Semitism legitimate criticism of Israel); by doing these things Mr Falter therefore risked increasing anti-Semitism; Mr Falter’s motive was to obtain funds (including funds from the British taxpayer) to support the activities of the CAA and to provide his own income; the funds obtained by this fabrication and misrepresentation were consequently obtained by Mr Falter’s fraud; and Mr Falter is guilty of hypocrisy – he campaigns against anti-Semitism but he is content with its continued prevalence (even resorting to the manufacture of incidents) because his income and that of the CAA depend upon it.” Faced with the impossible task of substantiating these libels, Mr
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Atzmon instead capitulated and agreed to settle the case, admitting that all of the claims were false and agreeing to pay substantial damages and costs. The defeat is a humiliation for Mr Atzmon. Mr Falter was represented by the solicitor Mark Lewis who instructed William Bennett as barrister. The libel proceedings brought against Mr Aztmon are part of a strategy devised by Mr Lewis which he and Campaign Against Anti-Semitism intend to use to force other anti-Semitism into either apologising in court, or paying substantial damages. Mr Falter said: “For four years, I have led Campaign Against Anti-Semitism without earning a penny from it and at enormous personal and financial cost to myself. I am proud that we have built an organisation with great integrity to lead
the fight against anti-Semitism in Britain. We are often accused by anti-Semitism of seeking to stifle criticism of Israel or of making anti-Semitic incidents up, and I am delighted that through the work of libel lawyers Mark Lewis and William Bennett I have been able to set the record straight and expose one such anti-Semitic liar for what he truly is.”

Dear Sir, In your report (El Al will eject passengers refusing to sit next to someone, June 28) that El Al¹s chief executive, Gonen Usishkin, said: Anyone who flies on the national airline senses the values on which we were built: an egalitarian company that makes no distinctions on the basis of religion, race or gender.” This was in response to the unfortunate incident in which “a New York to Israel flight [was delayed] by over an hour after four Charedi men refused to take assigned seats next to women”. While most halachic authorities do not to object to being seated next to someone of the opposite gender on public transport, some disagree and, in my opinion, they should be accommodated if possible by giving them the option of booking such seats in advance. Unfortunately, El Al does not provide the option of requesting a seat next to a person of the same gender as oneself. To do so should not be more difficult than processing special meal requirements and would have entirely avoided the problem - and nobody would have been aware that it had been done. Once such a facility exists, those who fail to use it and, only once on board, refuse to sit in their assigned place should be removed from the aircraft immediately, with no refund, compensation or rebooking service allowed. Obviously there would be few cases where they had to make a last minute booking, such as to get to a levaya, and could not make the necessary request but I would have hoped such people would be treated sympathetically and accommodated if possible. Interestingly, one very rarely hears reports of ‘ultra-Orthodox women’ asking to be moved so as not to sit next to ‘strange men’ but I am sure that also does occur, though probably less often because there are far more men - especially meshullachim - than women travelling unaccompanied on planes. That is probably because, in general society, it is still accepted that a woman may not wish to sit next to a ‘strange man’, so is not a religious issue. Also, they are not quite as distinctively dressed as the meshullachim who get reported in the press. I find it difficult to believe that “[an Israeli] judge ruled the airline must declare it is forbidden for a crew member to ASK a passenger to change seats at the request of another passenger based on gender”. If he had stated REQUIRE, I would have no objection but surely a polite request should be unobjectionable. Also, if the person had no particular reason why they should not move (e.g. needing extra leg room or proximity to the toilet), refusal to do so would seem to be the antithesis of tolerance. Of course, the behaviour of those four unruly passengers was completely unacceptable but the over-the-top reactions to it in the media - as opposed to the understandable irritation of those actually on the flight - betrayed the sort of xenophobia from which Jews have often suffered in the past. Why can’t everyone accept that others may have a different lifestyle from themselves rather than try to force their own on them? Yours faithfully Martin D. Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem visits Barnet Barnet is a model for bolstering civic pride in Jerusalem, according to a London-born deputy mayor of the city. Fleur Hassan-Nahoum met Barnet Conservative councillors Eva Greenspan and Anthony Finn at Hendon Town Hall on Monday to compare notes on local government in London and Israel. Speaking after the meeting, she said: “What I love about London, and Barnet in particular, is that London is very cosmopolitan, very varied and mixed, and that’s similar to Jerusalem. The difference is every community is very political about its interests in Jerusalem but here it’s more civic. I want people in Jerusalem to be less political about local government and move it away from national politics.”
She also praised London’s approach to conservation and said preserving historic architecture alongside the need to build a modern capital city was proving a significant challenge in Jerusalem. Mrs Hassan-Nahoum was born in London and raised in Gibraltar where her father, Sir Joshua Hassan, was a key figure in the civil rights movement and the Rock’s first prime minister. She has been an Israeli resident since 2001 and a member of Jerusalem City Council since May 2016, being appointed a deputy mayor in December 2017. A member of the liberal Jerusalemites party, she has been involved in promoting employment and small business creation among the city’s impoverished Hasidic and Arab populations. She is visiting
London as part of a speaking tour of the British Isles organised by the Zionist Federation. Cllr Greenspan, who represents the Finchley Church End ward, said: “It was lovely to meet Fleur and very interesting to hear how different countries approach local government. It was also fascinating to hear how someone born in London and raised in Gibraltar can go so far in Israeli politics. With municipal elections for Jerusalem coming up in August, we wish her all the best.” Mrs Hassan-Nahoum will be speaking in London on Thursday 5th July. PaJes and Ofsted meet in wake of Yesodeh report BY LEAH WAXLER
The Partnerships for Jewish Schools and Ofsted have met in the wake of the recent downgrade report of Yesodeh Hatorah Senior Girls’ School in Stamford Hill. Lord Stuart Polak, Conservative Friends of Israel honorary president, chaired a meeting between PaJeS, a division of the Jewish Leadership Council, and the under-fire national inspectorate body. Following the meeting, PaJeS reportedly said it would work closely with Ofsted to build an understanding of how a school can comply with British values in line with religious beliefs. Yesodeh governors slammed Ofsted for rating the Stamford Hillbased school from ‘good’ to inadequate’ last week. Inspectors criticised the state-funded school for ineffective
safeguarding, teaching standards amongst various issues. Yet Yesodeh is among elite educational Orthodox establishments. In recent years, pupils have been in the top 2% for Maths and 10% for English achieving level 4 or better. And Hackney Learning Trust described the school as “outstanding” only a few months ago. “This report says more about Ofsted than it does about our school,” noted Theo Bibelman, Chairman of Governors on publication of the report.
“Ofsted has downplayed our successes and academic achievements whilst showing a clear disrespect for the Orthodox Jewish community.” He added: “It seems that unless we agree with secularist agenda of Ofsted London then we cannot comply with their inspection criteria. “This inspection was never about us. It is about Ofsted using their unfettered powers to try to force faith schools to comply with their agenda or fail.” Inspectors also cited issues over equal opportunities for learning compared to pupils at other schools.

JFS bans mobile phones BY JW REPORTER JFS has banned pupils using mobile phones in interests of mental health and well-being of children this week. The new policy has come into force and will be “strictly enforced” according to the school. Headteacher Rachel Fink sent a letter to parents explaining the decision and asked parents for support in assisting children with the transition. Phones have been allowed for educational purposes over the past 18 months but the letter noted it had led to a detrimental impact on the overall learning environment in school. The school acknowledges the impact technology can offer but also noted excessive use of mobile devices and other devices by students can be a distraction. Students have been told that phones must be switched off and stored in lockers on arrival.
They must not be kept in blazer pockets or bags. Sanctions for rule-breakers include confiscation, exclusion, or Police involvement should bullying, harassing or intimidating of staff or students occur through mobile usage.

Jewish Care celebrates young leaders at MIKE Awards Ceremony
110 inspiring young people were recognised at the MIKE awards last Wednesday for their dedication and commitment in volunteering at Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre. They are all participants in the MIKE (Motivation, Inspiration, Knowledge and Education) youth leadership programme. The programme empowers young people to become youth leaders, learning leadership skills from their peers and as they move through the stages of the programme, becoming educators themselves. The young leaders develop in the programme through training and by running after school clubs and half term schemes for primary school age children at RJCC. Speaking at the awards, Community Centre Manager, Graham Freeman, said, “It is remarkable to appreciate the scope, diversity and reach of this programme, and its long lasting legacy. success that this brings both to the young people themselves but also to the community in general. It would be no surprise to find that our future professionals and lay leaders are sitting in this room tonight.” This year, the winner of the prestigious Saul Keene Award for Excellence in Youth Leadership, presented by Nettie and Danny Keene, was 17 year old, Millie West. Presenting the award to her, Danny Keene said, “Millie is someone that all other participants, volunteers and youth staff members look up to, regardless of their age. Her patience, empathy and care for others is outstanding and these qualities make the work she does with children with special educational needs so important. She has the skills to create a safe space for the children that attend our weekly clubs and schemes and puts in the time and effort to get to know each child, so they can have as much fun as possible. “Millie sets an example, showing

those around them what it means to be an enthusiastic, thoughtful and approachable leader, who is loved and appreciated at Redbridge JCC. Her passion for encouraging and empowering others is clear in the work she has completed at Redbridge JCC. She is also equipped to deal with the emotional and social needs of the people around her.” After the awards, Millie said, “It was such an honour to be given the prestigious Saul Keene award by Nettie and Danny Keene. I was so surprised. I started as a participant of MIKE in Year 9 working with the kids every week and during school holiday programmes. It’s been great to go through the training and progress each year with increased responsibility. This year I’ll be the Rosh (Head) at Summerworld. “I love building bonds and it’s a great feeling knowing that what you do really makes a difference to a child’s day and makes a real impact. I’m planning to study speech and language therapy at University in September and working with children at RJCC, especially the 1:1 work has really influenced me. I’d love to work with early years and through working with older people at the day centre have found that’s something I really enjoy too. It’s had a huge impact on me.” The Volunteer of the Year award was presented for the first time this year and was given to 16 year old Jasmine Spurling. Emma Senitt, RJCC’s Youth &
Yoni Segal
Families Co-ordinator, said, “Jasmine’s enthusiasm, positive attitude and dedication has made a significant difference to the MIKE programme. She deserves recognition for all of her hard work assisting with MIKE every week and motivating not only the participants involved but also the team around her. Her bubbly and infectious personality draws people to want to work with her and be around her.” Jasmine Spurling, said - ‘Redbridge JCC is a place where I feel comfortable, accepted and at home. The best part about MIKE is that you have fun while learning and it’s not until you reflect on your experience that you realise how much the MIKE programme and the MIKE leaders actually give young people. I have volunteered every week at MIKE throughout the whole year and I have loved being a part of the sessions and taking on more responsibilities. I feel honoured to have received this award, thank you.’ Laura Baron, Jewish Care’s
RJCC Leadership & Informal Educator presented the Above and Beyond Awards to eight recipients for volunteering 100 hours or more in the past year. She said, “I am so proud to say that several of our MIKE volunteers have exceeded all expectations and their hard work and dedication to the youth of Redbridge, deserves recognition. I am delighted to congratulate them on receiving the Above and Beyond Award 2018. They are Joshua Appleby, Scott Enness, Jacob Landsman, Lauren Leeman, Isabella Mazin, Marnie Power-Sherwin, Natasha Schiffman and Jamie Shone.” There were also nine winners of the Jack Petchey Award recognising their commendable qualities including their excellent leaderships skills, commitment and use of imagination and innovation to bring a smile to the children’s faces. Chai ‘360 Degrees’ Manchester Dinner raises £275,000
Chai Cancer Care, the Jewish Community’s Cancer Support Organisation raised £275,000 at its ‘360 Degrees’ Manchester Dinner last Wednesday 27th June at the Hilton Hotel, Deansgate. The room, gloriously bathed in Chai’s purple light, was full to capacity with an incredibly warm atmosphere, as more than 400 guests raised the much needed funds to enable Chai to continue its range of services in North and South Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. Dr Ian Ellis, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Genetics, University of Liverpool, welcomed the guests and set the tone for the evening. He said: “I have been a Medical Patron with Chai for 10 years and during that time I and my medical colleagues have seen the enormous value and benefit that Chai gives to patients and their families. The commitment that Chai shows throughout the country, across all parts of community is evidenced by the services that they have established across the North of England in North and South Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. It is your support for Chai that allows Chai to support the families
that we care for in a partnership. We could not do it without Chai and Chai could not do it without each and every one of you.” Guests were then moved, hearing from inspirational Chai client, Michal Mocton, who spoke about how Chai helped her through her cancer journey, she said: “I once heard someone say that Chai was as important to their recovery as the chemotherapy was. At first I thought this was an exaggeration but really it’s the truth. Without Chai 5 years on my family and definitely I would still be struggling.” Two films were shown during the evening: the first, ‘What is cancer, what is Chai?’ highlighted the scope of Chai’s day-to-day work through the voices of clients of all ages and in all 11 satellite centres across the UK. Following the film, Chai’s Chairman, Louise Hager spoke passionately about Chai’s all–encompassing embrace of professionalism, care and expertise that supports everyone who turns to Chai. She said: “It surrounds you from the moment you get in touch, from the moment you walk through our doors, or for those who are too

unwell to come to us, the moment Chai walks through your door.” Louise also spoke about the revolutionary ethos of Chai, which for 28 years has put Chai at the forefront of cancer care. We recognise that every person who turns to Chai will have their own specific needs, which is why each service is chosen deliberately so that the patient or their loved ones gets the right care and the right service for as long as they need it. At the same time, we live in the age of measurable outcomes and it is no different at Chai. The cancer journey changes throughout, often unexpectedly, and we match those twists and turns, always with the ultimate aim to empower our clients to deal
P’eir organises ‘inclusion’ training for Rabbis and Rebbetsens
P’EIR, the United Synagogue’s rabbinic training facility, teamed up last week with the Gesher School to deliver the first ever professional development seminar for rabbis and rebbetsens dedicated to ‘Neurodiversity, Inclusion and Community’. The programme was opened by Rabbi Chaim Kanterovitz (senior rabbi of Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue) who is also the religious principal of Gesher School. He introduced Sarah Sultman, co-founder of the school,
who scoped general concerns over provision for neurodiverse individuals and their families in synagogue communities. Core training was then delivered by head teacher Gianna Colizza – who specialises in the educational needs of children with autism – and by deputy head, Leor Harel who focussed on inclusion issues within shul environments and childrens’ services. During the latter part of the day, speech therapist and Hampstead

Garden Suburb Synagogue’s Chazan, Avromi Freilich described how he works with families to achieve a meaningful outcome for the celebration of Bar/ BatMitzvah of children with learning difficulties. Following on, Rebbetsen Lauren Levin (South Hampstead) encouraged those present to think about how they can make inclusion in our communities ‘real’. In the concluding session, Rabbi David Mason (Muswell Hill Synagogue) facilitated a general discussion among those who had participated throughout the day. Rabbi Dr Julian Shindler, P’EIR programmes director, observed that: ‘the day’s training had proved very effective at raising awareness about the challenges that many families encounter in their interaction with normal communal life. Participants had been very engaged with this training and we are hopeful that this will lead to greater inclusion in our synagogues.’

with whatever set of circumstances they may face. Be it a new diagnosis, after surgery, adjusting to life post-treatment or following a bereavement. For many it will be a different life. A life they did not choose. But a life in which they can find meaning and purpose. And now, almost three decades later, it is indeed heartening that so much of the mainstream approach to cancer care, which has been adopted by many of the country’s largest charities, is now following our lead.” Guests were then shown the appeal film entitled ‘The Wonder of Chai’, featuring a whirlwind of emotions and feelings, of families and relationships. Leeds Community Welcomes Dayan Abraham The whole Leeds community experienced a very uplifting Shabbos on Parshas Balak with the presence of Dayan Abraham, the Nasi of the Leeds Kollel. Dayan Abraham has encouraged and promoted the Leeds Kollel since its inception over four years ago. The visit of the Dayan to Leeds was a strong chizuk both for the members of the Kollel and for the wider Leeds community. On Friday night, the Dayan davened at the Street Lane Minyan which meets for Kabalas Shab-
stressed the importance of giving over oneself and to dedicate our abilities for the spiritual needs of others. The Friday night meal was held in the home of the Rosh Kollel. The guests were joined by other community members. The seudah continued late into the night, together with inspiring divrei Torah and harmonious zemiros and nigunim. and Answer session. Dayan Abraham masterly gave over clear Hashkofas Hatorah on a wide range of questions. The members of the congregation were greatly impressed at the breadth of knowledge of the Dayan on so many worldly matters and his listeners avidly absorbed every word. At the Kiddush that followed, many community members used the opportunity to personally interact with the Dayan. The Shabbos day seudah took place in the house of one of the Bnei Hakollel. Other community members were also invited to enjoy the beautiful Shabbos ruach. The highlight of the Shabbos was undoubtedly the Seuda Shlishis that was held later in the afternoon. Once again, the achdus of the community was evident. The three main Shuls joined together at the Etz Chaim Shul on Harrogate Road. About 100 participants crowded into the Shul hall. At the beginning of the Seudah Shlishis, a local school boy who has been regularly learning with a Kollel member made a Siyum on Mesechta Horiyos. This was very fitting for his farewell to Leeds, as he is going off to learn full-time in Yeshiva this
with declining numbers, and there are those that are expanding and struggling with insufficient schools and houses due to increasing numbers. Invariably, the difference between the two types lies in the degree of commitment to Limmud Hatorah. Dayan Abraham concluded by presenting the Kollel yungerleit with certificates signed by Dayan Westheim and Dayan Refson. The Dayanim recently tested the bnei Kollel on their knowledge of Yoreh Deah Chelek Beis and were impressed with their proficiency. The Seuda ended with closing words from the Rosh Kollel, Rabbi Ahron Kramer. Rabbi Kramer thanked the Shuls for their help and support. All the participants agreed that they had enjoyed a most wonderful and inspiring Shabbos.

He described the refined manner of all the members of the Kollel and the influence this makes, concluding that they are all a tremendous addition to Leeds. The main address was given by Dayan Abraham, who was introduced by Rabbi Kupperman. In his emotive address, the Dayan pleaded and implored the Kehilla to attach themselves unreservedly to Limmud Hatorah. He declared that during his many travels around the globe he has found two opposite types of Jewish communities. There are those that are waning

Speaking about the project, David Collins, The US’ Director of Jewish Living said: “We are very excited about this ground-breaking initiative which will give pupils an even closer connection to their community and their Judaism. Rabbi and Michal Mann were the standout candidates for this position and we are looking forward to working

We can’t wait to see the amazing work that Rabbi Bentzi and Michal will do throughout JFS which will lead to stronger Jewish identities and activism on campuses.” JFS Headteacher, Rachel Fink said: “Our Sixth Form has a renowned reputation for preparing students for university. I am delighted that the arrival of the Manns will provide a renewed focus for Jewish life and learning that fulfils our vision as a school to achieve academic success alongside a strong Jewish identity.” As part of the initiative, Rabbi Bentzi and Michal will lead the new and growing Mill Hill East United Synagogue during Shabbatot and one evening a week. Charity Corner Resource
“You built me up piece by piece. I was so lost.” Now happily ensconced in a job for the past eight years, the lady who made this comment to the Chief Executive of the charity, Resource, is eternally grateful for its role in enabling her to return to the job market. Close your eyes, dear reader, and think of all the charities which have tried to garner your support over the years. Whilst they were all undoubtedly championing very worthy and laudable causes, Resource is a charity with a difference. It is one of a kind. For Resource addresses the needs of a segment of Jewish society which is largely overlooked – the unemployed.

Moreover, whilst most people associate charity with monetary donations, that which Resource gives people is something that money cannot buy. The organisation aims to encourage those who have been out of work for some time with both the reassurance and the techniques necessary to enter the employment world once more. It also endeavours to provide tools and support to those who seem to be perpetually unlucky at sustaining a job for a substantial period. There is no greater kindness than enabling people to be financially independent. This also has a significant impact on one’s self esteem. Indeed, Resource readily acknowledges that many people will change jobs several times in their lifetime and it tries to give people the requisite skills to secure new employment without having to persistently turn to Resource for help. Volunteers play a vital role in the smooth running of Resource.
They selflessly devote hours of their time to meet with job-seekers in an initial one-to-one discussion at Resource’s base in Finchley. It is even happy to provide psychometric testing. All volunteers have held managerial or high-ranking positions in the field in which they work so they are in a position to advise on what it is that companies are specifically seeking in potential employees. In the event that the job-seeker is unsure as to which route to take, Resource provides a volunteer who has had experience in advising people as to which career path to choose. Resource does impress upon its clients that although they are not required to pay for its services, the arduous task of finding a job is one that takes time and effort and must be taken seriously. It demands that they perfect their CV and it offers seminars which include tuition as to the writing of a CV. Furthermore, Resource recognises that most jobs are sourced through networking and therefore, it requires that its clients develop networking skills. All clients are free to attend the seminar which is devoted to the acquisition of these skills. Resource is also keen to provide seminars on interview techniques and it does offer mock interviews.
It is concerned that its clients have all the tools they will need for their chosen job and there is a plethora of seminars available to assist in mastering all the requisite techniques. Clients are also encouraged to employ the facilities of Resource as a means of finding a job and rather than succumbing to distractions at home, it urges clients to sit at its Finchley location and use its computers and phones on a daily basis in an effort to secure that dream job. Resource does not view itself as an employment agency and consequently, it does not search for jobs for its clients. However, it is proud of its many contacts in the job market and it is always eager to request that certain potential employers meet informally with job-seekers. Resource anticipates that if its clients make a good impression, it is possible that a role may be created for them even if there is not an existing vacancy at that time. Resource appreciates that a large part of the experience of the unemployed is due to a distinct lack of self-esteem. It endeavours to bolster its clients’ confidence in themselves, their qualifications, talents and what they can offer future employees. Resource is also keen to keep in touch with its clients after they
have finally found a job. It has created a community where past and present clients can liaise. This proves invaluable as a support sysVictoria Sterman, Chief Executive tem for current job-seekers. Resource is also aware that sometimes, the fact that one has found a job does not mean that one is able to keep it. The charity offers a seminar for those already in a job and this concentrates on the techniques needed to ensure that they sustain their job. In today’s world where nothing is given for free, Resource’s volunteers give freely of their time, their experience and their advice. Resource does not charge a penny for its services. In today’s world Resource is a rare resource! Phone: 020 8346 4000 Email: office@resource-centre.org Website: www.resource-centre.org

Appearing live this week: Aliza, from an Arab Village to England at Yad L’Achim’s women’s events
Women in North West London, Stamford Hill, and Manchester, … don’t miss out on the inspirational event of the year… happening this week! The desperate plea of Aliza, a Jewish woman trapped in an Arab village – “Come rescue me now! My husband is coming!!” – sent shudders down the spines of thousands of Jewish women in Eretz Yisrael, United States and Canada, who flocked to hear her story. The riveting drama of her rescue, told over in English by Aliza herself, the woman who experienced
it, has prompted calls from across the globe for speaking engagements to be enlightened and inspired. In response, Yad L’Achim, which orchestrated her rescue, is bringing Aliza to England to tell her story in a limited number of what promise to be incredible events. The events will take place this coming week from Sunday through Tuesday (810 July). At the event, you will hear Aliza tell over her emotionally powerful and inspirational personal story. Aliza went from unimaginable suffering to heroic triumph and today
is a courageous role model to many young women in Eretz Yisrael as she inspires others with her story and message. Today, Aliza helps Yad L’Achim in the rescue of other Jewish and children trapped in Arab villages. It is an event and experience not to be missed. In addition, a breathtaking film will be shown documenting the rescue of Dina bat Leah and her two children. Dina had spent 28 years in an abusive marriage in Tulkarem, an Arab village under the control of the Palestinian Authority.
The evenings will conclude with a film, being aired for the first time in the UK, that tells the story of Michal, rescued from Uzbekistan together with her children, who, with Hashem’s help, recently married a religious Jewish man. London Volunteer Celebration
AJR were delighted to celebrate their London volunteers at the auspicious German House in Belgrave Square on 2 July, at the invitation of The Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, Tania Freiin von Uslar-Gleichen. The celebration was shared with Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP) to mark their 60th anniversary. ARSP works with young Germans and Poles who volunteer for one year as symbolic
acceptance of the responsibility for the consequences of National Socialism. AJR’s intern from ARSP, Julie Manseck, along with two of her colleagues, spoke movingly about what their year of volunteering has meant to them. AJR Chairman, Andrew Kaufman MBE, took the opportunity to thank their volunteers who provide such a valuable and appreciated service to members. While he did not want to single out anyone in
particular it was difficult not to give a special mention to two of AJR’s wonderful volunteers who continue to give selflessly despite being over 95 years old themselves, Hortense Gordon and Peter Wayne. As well as a delightful reception buffet, guests were invited to tour the current exhibition ‘Finchleystraße – German artists in exile in Great Britain and beyond 1933-4’ led by the curator from the Ben Uri Gallery.

Football fans raised £4,000 for Camp Simcha at a World Cup event at Whitefield Golf Club. Inquesta, a forensic accounting and insolvency firm based in Radcliffe, organised a live screening of the England v Belgium Group G match for more than 70 business contacts.
The event included a buffet dinner, a raffle, auction, sweepstake and darts football competition. All of the proceeds go to Camp Simcha, a charity which helps to improve the quality of life of families affected by serious childhood illness. Inquesta director Rob Miller, who

founded the business with Steven Wiseglass, said: “We are thrilled that the event raised such a large sum of money as well as increasing awareness about the fantastic work that Camp Simcha does. “It was a really successful evening and we are delighted with the support we received from contacts and clients. “We’re extremely grateful to the businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes and auction lots, and to all of our guests for their generous contributions.” Tony Levene, from Whitefield, whose teenage Joey has Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy, a serious genetic condition, spoke at the event about the positive difference Camp Simcha makes to the lives of seriously ill children and their families.

Michelle Delew, Camp Simcha’s Manchester fundraising and development officer, said: “We are so grateful to Rob, Steven and the Inquesta team for choosing to support Camp Simcha by organising this fantastic World Cup evening. “The money raised will help us to
be there for families in Manchester with seriously ill children, who need our support. It was a great evening, enjoyed by all, and an opportunity to raise awareness about the work we do, so that we can reach even more families.”
Record numbers attend Chabad UK conference Rabbis at Chabad-Lubavitch conference PHOTO CREDIT: DAVID SAFFER
Ninety-two rabbis attended the National Conference of ChabadLubavitch Rabbis at Bosworth Hall in the Midlands. During the two-day event delegates from across the UK participated in 22 lectures and workshops. Organisers believe the vast array of topics covered left rabbis energised to serve communities with renewed purpose and vigour. “The record number of delegates was tribute to the months of
effort expended by members of committee who have established conference as a central platform for learning and growth,” said Rabbi Yehuda Pink, conference chair. Rabbi Pesach Efune opened conference and paid tribute to Rabbi Nachman Sudak who oversaw the growth of the movement from a single office in Stamford Hill in 1958. Today, 127 Chabad Rabbis cover the length and breadth of the country serving students on campus,
at Chabad Houses, community pulpits, as educators and youth workers. Rabbi Bentzi Sudak, ChabadLubavitch UK chief executive, praised the growth in numbers of personnel and reach of individual centres. “This is a testament to the vibrant Jewish community here in the UK and to the relevant cutting-edge programming we make available to Jews of all walks of life,” he said. Conference was enhanced by the presence of Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky from Chabad’s World Headquarters who oversees the development of over 4,000 Chabad institutions across the globe. Delivering a keynote address, he praised Shluchim for perpetuating the legacy of the Lubavitch Rebbe
with unswerving dedication to the needs of every Jew wherever they may be and encouraged them to continue their important work. Other international guests included Rabbi Naftali Silberberg of the Jewish Learning Institute, who delivered workshops on how to deliver an effective adult education programme. Rabbi Shimon Rivkin, Cteens executive director, shared best practice in a key demographic to ensure Jewish continuity. Tracks included INSET training for teachers by Phaivish Pink and financial planning by Rabbi Benji Landau. Jon Benjamin, Chabad-Lubavitch UK, reviewed legal requirements and advised delegates of updated policies for the protection of
children and vulnerable adults.

Kisharon begins anticipated new school redevelopment project Work has begun on Kisharon’s eagerly-anticipated redevelopment of the Kisharon School in North London. The £12.5 million redevelopment project, for which 90% of the funds required have already been raised, will see the school open in its new premises in 2020, helping to ensure that the charity can achieve its long-term goal of ensuring that people with learning disabilities have further opportunities to learn, work and live life independently. The new school will offer stateof-the-art facilities for 72 primary and secondary school-aged pupils in four dedicated educational units specially designed around
the students’ unique talents and abilities, with dynamic indoor and outdoor teaching space offering specialist facilities including breakout rooms. Other additions will include an early years assessment Unit, a Profound and Multiple learning disability area, an Autistic Zone and other specialist learning disability units, with ambient temperature-controlled classrooms designed to support learning, and access to multiple therapy rooms, a food technology unit, a multi-purpose school hall and Shul, and a hydrotherapy pool. Meeting with project managers to inspect progress on the first
phase of redevelopment, Kisharon Chairman Philip Goldberg, Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications Richard Franklin showed current pupils plans for the Kisharon School. Accompanied by Headteacher of Kisharon School, Sora Kopfstein, the children were given a practical demonstration of a digger and dump truck on the site of the Parsons Street development. Speaking from the site, Philip Goldberg said: “We are thrilled to have finally begun work on our much-anticipated new school. This development will allow us to offer a state of the art environment to deliver excellence in education and

England end penalty demons to reach quarter finals BY DAVID SAFFER
Gareth Southgate’s young England team are a step closer to the World Cup final after defeating Columbia in tension-wreaked penalty shootout 4-3 at the Spartak Stadium.

Eric Dier fired home the winning spot kick after Jordan Pickford pulled off a sensational one-handed save from Carlos Bacca to give England their first ever World Cup penalty triumph. Skipper Harry Kane and a new generation of players face Sweden in the quarter-finals on Saturday afternoon in Samara with the nation behind them all the way to create history. The South Americans were a disgrace in terms of attitude - six were booked - including Wilmar Barrios, who should have been sent off for a head-butt on Jordan Henderson in a bad-tempered affair.
England took the lead with a Kane second half penalty, his sixth in the tournament, but deep into injury time Yerry Mina headed a dramatic equaliser moments after Pickford had produced a stunning save from a long range effrort. Danny Rose and Dier missed late chances in extra time before the lottery of penalties. Kane and Rashford slotted home penalty kicks, Henderson then missed to hand Colombia the initiative. But Mateus Uribe stuck the crossbar, Keiren Trippier scored a pressure kick prior to Pickford and Dier entering World Cup folklore. Sweden meanwhile booked a last-eight spot with a second half strike from Emil Forsberg in a dour affair, his shot deflecting off Manuel Akanji past stranded Yann Sommer in Swiss goal. In other knockout clashes, French teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe outshone Argentina’s Lionel Messi in a stunning display and hosts Russia incredibly knocked out Spain on penalties. An iconic picture of Pele and Bobby Moore embracing after a classic encounter in Guadalajara at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico has been added to by Messi and Mbappe exchanging words after Les Blues triumphed 4-3 in a thrilling clash in Kazan. The match marked the arrival of Mbappe on the world stage but
the question now is whether he can emulate Zinadine Zidane who led Les Blues to success 20 years ago. The 19-year striker was the star of a sensational seven-goal thriller. Mbappe scored a second half brace and won a ninth-minute penalty against the South Americans. The first teen to score more than one goal in a finals since Michael Owen in 1998, even more notable, he is the first to score twice in a World Cup match since Pele versus Sweden in the 1958 final. France have never lost when Antoine Griezmann has scored and he opened the scoring after a mazy Mbappe run was ended by Marcos Rojo for the spot kick. The French looked like increasing the lead until Angel di Maria produced a howitzer from nowhere to level the scores before half time. Argentina fans went wild when Gabriel Mercado nudged a Messi shot wide of Hugo Lloris only for Benjamin Pavard to produce another wonder strike to level the scores. However, Mbappe produced two crisp finishes, the second after a lightning counter-attack. Sergio Aguero nodded in a 93rd-minute header from a Messi cross but it was too late to deny Mbappe et al a deserved quarter final spot. France after a highly anticipated clash that ended Ronaldo’s World Cup. Edinson Cavani scored both goals as Uruguay defeated Portugal 2-1 to set up the last-eight encounter. Though the match was not as exciting as the French-Argentine clash, it had its moments, and especially from the Paris St Germain striker. Linking with strike partner Louis Suarez, who has been in sparkling form, Cavani converted his drilled cross to open the scoring. Uruguay had not conceded a goal in the competition but their superb defence, marshalled by Diego Godin was breached when Pepe thumped home a header before the break. Portugal enjoyed a brief period of dominance but Uruguay, in Suarez, Cavani and Godin, have a trio
of world class stars as the heart of their team. And it was Cavani who secured a quarter final meeting with the French when he stroked home a terrific goal past keeper Rui Patricio. But the win may have come at a huge cost as Cavani departed late on with a hamstring injury. Only time will tell how serious the injury is for a Uruguay team that is truly united and has only conceded one goal since last August. Just when you thought all shocks might be over in this competition Russia stunned Spain at the Luzhniki Stadium with a penalty shootwin after a dour 1-1 after extra time. Russia’s hero was goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev who stopped penalties from Koke and Iago Aspas to break Spanish hearts and spark

incredible scenes amongst delirious home supporters. The result ended the international career of Andreas Iniesta, who scored the winning goal in the 2010 final, and it could be the end for a number of stalwarts including skipper Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique from the serial winning team who also lifted two Euro titles. David de Gea got close to the spot kick of Fedor Smolov but could only watch on as Akinfeev acrobatically denied Aspas to secure a quarterfinal spot for the first time since 1970. triumph. You could not blame their logic as they were the lowest ranked country in the draw. But after going behind when 39-year-old Sergey Ignashevich attempted to stop Ramos connecting with a 12th-minute Marco Asensio’s free-kick but accidently diverted the ball into his own goal for a Spanish lead, the Russians hit back before half time when Artem Dzyuba fired home a penalty after his header from a corner hit Gerard Pique’s arm. From there, Russia kept to their game plan leading to the shootout drama which saw Aleksandr Golovin and Denis Cheryshev match efforts from Iniesta and Piqué.
Fedor Smolov edged Russia ahead after Akinfeev saved Koke’s strike. And after Ramos leveled, Sergei Ignashevich fired home before Akinfeev completed a glorious win. Croatia scraped past Denmark after the Danes got off to a perfect start when Mathias Jorgensen poked home a long throw in on 57 seconds to stun the pre-match Croatian favorites. Mario Mandzukic responded before the four-minute mark after a defensive mix-up giving ‘keeper Casper Schmeichal no chance. Neither team had shipped a goal from open play in the tournament so a fascinating ‘cat ‘n’ mouse encounter ensued and had penalties written all over it despite a few close calls in an edgy clash. Kasper Schmeichel saved a Luka Modric’s 115th minute penalty that would have been the winner at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, and he stopped spot kicks from Milan Badelj and Josip Pivaric. But the Croations prevailed when Ivan Rakitic calmly slotted in the winning strike after Danijel Subasic saved three penalties to break Danish hearts for a 3-2 shootout triumph. Five-time winners Brazil scored two second half goals to overcame a bright start from Mexico and advance to the quarter finals for a seventh consecutive time at the Samara Arena. Neymar took center stage, for
good and bad reasons, in a clinical display by the tournament favourites. Mexico missed early chances and Brazil made them pay when Neymar combined with Willian before sliding home the opening goal. The Brazilians controlled much of the match, though they had to defend with gusto at times until sealing the win late on when substitute Roberto Firmino tapped-in shortly after entering the fray when Neymar saw his effort diverted into the Liverpool striker’s path by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. Sadly, given his talent, Neymar embarrassingly overreacted to a challenge from Mexican full-back Miguel Layun by the touchline. Such histrionics did Brazil’s star man no favours and it can only be

hoped he refrains from such playacting in future games - the first versus Belgium in Kazan. The Belgium advanced after a stunning comeback to defeat Japan 3-2 at the Rostov Arena. But their place was in severe doubt early in the second half after shipping two goals in four minutes. Genki Haraguchi opened the scoring with a clinical finish which was doubled by Takashi Inui’s 25yard thunderous strike. Roberto Martinez introduced Marouane Fellaini and Nacer Chadli to his shell-shocked team with 65 minutes on the clock, and within 10 minutes the were level. Vertonghen, who was at fault for the first Japanese goal, looped a header beyond the despairing keeper and Fellaini nodded in and Eden Hazard cross. Belgium’s talented squad had failed to fire in the main but they made a lightening counter attack to win in the 94th-minute when Chadli put away a Thomas Meunier pass. The first team since West Germany fought back to beat England in 1970 after being two goals adrift in a knockout match Martinez’s ‘golden generation’ finally showed their World Cup credentials. Pundits are predicting a France v Brazil and Croatia v England semi-final line up but in a World Cup full of surprising results anything is possible.

The unthinkable has occurred. England have won a penalty shootout! Amid a fevered atmosphere inside Spartak Stadium, Eric Dier scored the winning kick after Jordan Pickford’s brilliant save from Carlos Bacca. Gareth Southgate’s side looked to have emerged unscathed from an ill-disciplined match courtesy of Harry Kane’s penalty, only for Colombia’s Yerry Mina to equalise in the closing seconds of stoppage time to send the massed ranks of Colombia fans wild. The extra 30 minutes could not separate the sides and led to a nerve-shredding finale that has so often been England’s undoing, with a dismal record of just one win in seven shootouts at major tournaments before this. England looked to be set for more agony when Jordan Henderson’s
penalty was saved by David Ospina but Mateus Uribe smashed the following kick on to the crossbar to pave the way for Pickford and Dier to be England’s saviours. Overall, the game was a bit dire, with England playing relatively solid throughout the game and Colombia not really creating enough chances. But, not only does the penalty shootout victory mean the Three Lions are now through to the quarter final stage for the first time in 12 years, it’s also a testament to how far this England team has gone and can go in the future. Harry Kane and Co. survived a test of nerve that will prove invaluable as they drive deeper into this World Cup after a night of noise, colour and hostility in Moscow. Southgate’s side also casted off the clouds of dread that have come over England in penalty shootouts in the past, a psychological lift that will most definitely help them further down the line.
Southgate’s one-match-at-a-time mantra has been designed to keep expectations in check as his side have been presented with their best opportunity at a World Cup since they reached the semi-finals of Italia 90. If he was listening to the England fans who gathered and sang non-stop late into the Moscow night behind the goal in the Spartak Stadium, it may have dawned on him that keeping a lid on expectations is likely to be a losing battle. England will have taken a lot out of themselves in this physically gruelling and mentally taxing last-16 game and they now face the well-organised and resilient Swedes. If they can overcome Sweden, the possibility of a semi-final meeting with Russia or Croatia comes into view. The chance of England then getting to the final is a very high one considering none of the teams in the way of England and the World

Cup final have ever won the World Cup before. Although there is work to do and this was not a flawless performance by any means, England and Southgate have now regained the momentum they lost in their group-stage loss to Belgium and can look to build on that. Another factor of England’s success is the main man Harry Kane. Bagging the first goal of the game meant Kane has scored 14 goals in 10 England appearances under Gareth Southgate, scoring in all eight matches he has played as captain (12 goals). Kane is the leading figure for this young and inexperienced England team but if he continues to keep on banging them in the net and leading England to resounding victories, then there’s only one thing I can say. Dear Rabbi I’m a sixth grade student and having trouble with my homework. Please explain the Metzudat David to 1 Shmuel 15:17 where Shaul is “small in his eyes”. Thank you. Gila Dear Gila So now I’m a homework coach. OK just this one time, since you asked so nicely. G-d is pretty upset with King Saul for allowing some elements of the Amalekites to live, even after he was instructed to destroy it all. Samuel lays it on the line to him: “You might consider yourself small in your own eyes, but the people see you as an important leader and G-d Himself has chosen you to be king. So get some backbone and get it together,” Actually it teaches us all an important lesson: The only thing
worse than ego is a low self-esteem. “I’m not important and what I do doesn’t matter.” Oh yes it does – in more ways than you can imagine. Like the poster that still hangs in my childhood bedroom back in Toronto: “I know I’m a somebody ‘cause G-d don’t make no junk.” Dear Rabbi In the Jewish view can a man and woman be just friends without concerning themselves about anything intimate? Loren Dear Loren In a word - ‘no!’ And in the words of Harry to Sally, ‘men and women can’t be friends because intimacy always gets in the way.’ Someone once said, men only ever see women as platonic friends if they tried and failed to have a re-

In Judaism we have a concept not to rejoice too much at our enemies downfall. The classic example of this is during Pesach, when we only say whole Hallel for the first two days out of respect to the fact that Hashem’s creations, the Egyptians died. This is despite the fact that they tried to murder all of us! Yet despite our grace, we certainly do pray that wicked people are punished and that violent oppressors are destroyed. In this Psalm King David makes mention of how wicked people are already ‘estranged from the womb,’ and the speakers of falsehood have ‘gone astray from birth.’ ‘Chamas lamoh kidmut chamas nachash cmoh cheten cheiresh yatem osno- they have venom like the venom of a snake, like the viper that is deaf and cannot be charmed.’ Wicked people are compared to a snake because in the same way that people fear snakes and treat them with utter contempt, wicked people once fully exposed are also treated like this. Not watching ones mouth and being poisonous with words can lead to untold damage, and this imagery is also conjured by King David’s prayer.

lationship with them first. In other words, men’s female buddies are almost-girlfriends who ended up relegated to “the friend zone”. So whilst you as a woman might see it one way, most men see it differently. And to be frank, try as you may – as a woman - you won’t get it. One Rabbi I know, when asked by a group of teenagers (three boys and three girls) whether it was OK for them to go hiking together for a few days, replied: “That’s dangerous stuff!” When one of the kids replied: “But we’re just friends and we’ll all have our own sleeping bags,” he retorted: “Then you don’t need a Rabbi, you need a shrink!” Think about it. Dear Rabbi I have recently finished my transformation from a genetic male to a female. I have always had close links with my local Jewish com-
Psalm 58
Wicked and unruly people are completely and utterly impervious to rebuke and simply cannot be told what to do. They simply refuse to listen to any reason whatsoever, and they only care about sinking their fangs of destruction as deep as they can into people. One only has to look around the world to see the bold claims of Israel’s haters. ‘O G-d smash their teeth in their mouth, shatter the molars of young lions…His arrows, may they be as if crumbled to pieces.’ King David pleads to Hashem to not only protect him from all harm his enemies may possibly seek to bestow upon him, but in addition to foil all their plots by smashing them down and crumbling them all to pieces. May Hashem continuously protect all of us from all harm until the end of days, Amen.

munity, however since my transition I have found it difficult to be accepted into the community as a female. Could you tell me does the Jewish religion integrate fully trans-gendered people without exception or am I going to be made unwelcome in all aspects of cultural, political and religious Judaism? Sara Dear Sara The Jewish community is open to all Jews from all walks of life, regardless of their chosen lifestyle. But to be sure, Judaism defines you by your essence i.e. your soul and in your case, as you were born clearly a male, then you have a male soul. So now what? Can you be called to the Torah as a male ‘soul?’ There’s the issue of female ‘body.’ Can you, as a female ‘body’ sit in the ladies gallery? There’s the reality of your male ‘soul.’ So there are dilemmas and I am sure you can appreciate that. I would hasten to add this doesn’t mean you cannot contribute in any number of other ways. You are Jewish and there are countless opportunities that enable you to still be a productive Jew doing countless other mitzvoth and you can still look to make your contribution to your community and beyond. Remember, the essence of Judaism is, “what can I do for G-d?” Not, “what can G-d do for me?” Dear Rabbi I am getting married in a reform synagogue because a rabbi who married my parents is a close family friend who would like to marry us. My fiancée and I are both halachicly Jewish. Is this going to be a problem for us or our children later? Is the marriage recognised by the Orthodox? Stephanie Dear Stephanie Any non-orthodox ceremony cannot obviously be recognised by an Orthodox establishment. But the reality of your union stands insofar as requiring a get in the event of divorce (G-d forbid). In any instance, so long as the mother is Jewish, then the kids are Jewish and they can join any Jewish school, have an Orthodox wedding later on - just as you can join any Orthodox synagogue. bah, which means having to take it one generation back to your parent’s ketubah. However, you make the point in your letter that your parents are in the same boat as you, which means taking it yet another generation back. It’s getting complicated if you catch my drift. Sentimentality aside, maybe you ought to consider the Orthodox option, even if only to pave a clearer path for the generations ahead. Dear Rabbi In a reply to a recent question about weddings you wrote that many have the custom of holding the Chupah outside, under the stars. In July the stars can only be seen at around 22.30, provided that it is not cloudy, and that would be much too late for a Chupah followed by the meal. I knew a man who used to say that for a Chupah there is more holiness inside the shul than in the courtyard of the town hall by the dustbins. And of course inside the shul the guests can be seated and the Rabbi can give an inspiring address. Henry Dear Henry Who said anything about having to “see” the stars? They’re there irrespective and the significance remains the same. It goes without saying that standing near dustbins is hardly the right idea. But you’ve obviously never attended a Chupah at a venue where such concerns are dealt with in the most beautiful way. There are varied customs as brought in Jewish law, but that man you used to know – tell him from me that for a Chupah there is more holiness outside by dustbins and starting on time than keeping your guests waiting inside a shul for two hours like some are known to do.

The Five Righteous Sisters
by Rabbi Dov Kaplan, Senior Rabbi, Hampstead Garden Suburb United Synagogue In this week’s sidrah we read about five sisters, daughters of Tzelofchad, who are the only people named in the Torah to have questioned an assumed halacha and subsequently been proven correct. Through these righteous women, a new law of the Torah was recorded for all time (Bemidbar 27:1-11).

The names of the two offenders are given G-d tells Moshe to ascend Mount Avarim and – Zimri from the tribe of Shimon and Kozbi, the look at the Land of Cana’an from afar, reminding daughter of a Midianite prince. G-d commands him that he will not come into the Land because of Moshe to smite the Midianites as retribution his mistake of hitting the rock (see Bemidbar for luring the Israelites into idol worship and 20:9-12). Moshe asks G-d to appoint a new immorality. Moshe and Elazar, the Kohen Gadol, leader. G-d tells him to appoint Yehoshua, which are told to take a census of men above the Moshe does, in the presence of Elazar and the Sanhedrin (Rashi). age of 20. Point to Consider: Why did G-d command a census at this particular point? (see Rashi to 26:1) 2nd Aliya (Levi) – 26:5-51 The main descendants of each tribe are listed, as well as the overall number within each tribe, as counted in the census. When detailing the tribe of Reuven, the Torah recalls that Datan and Aviram were from this tribe and that the ground swallowed them in Korach's rebellion. The overall census number is 601,730. 3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 26:52-27:5 G-d tells Moshe to apportion the Land to those counted in the census. The tribes with more people will receive proportionally more land area. Although this apportioning was calculated mathematically, it was carried out through Elazar drawing lots, guided by Divine inspiration (Rashi). The main Levite families, who were not included in the census, are listed. They number 23,000 males above the age of one month. No one who was included in the first census when the Israelites left Egypt is included in this census, as they had died in the desert, apart from Yehoshua and Calev. The five daughters of Tzelofchad, a descendant of Menashe, ask Moshe to be given a share in the Land, as they have no brothers to inherit their father. Moshe consults G-d about their request.
5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 28:1-15 G-d instructs Moshe to tell the Israelites to bring the twice-daily tamid (continual) offering, consisting of a male lamb, together with a flour offering mixed with oil and a wine libation. The additional Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh offerings are detailed. 6th Aliya (Shishi) – 28:16-29:11 The special offerings for Pesach, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are also detailed. 7th Aliya (Shevi’i) – 29:12-30:1 The Torah details the many extra offerings brought during Succot, including 70 bulls. Shemini Atzeret, the day after Succot, has its own set of offerings. Question: How many bulls are offered on Shemini Atzeret? (see 30:36) Answer on bottom of next page. Haftarah Taken from the start of the book of Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah), this haftarah is the first of the three ‘haftarot of affliction’ read in the build up to Tisha B’Av. The prophet is told by G-d that an invader will come ‘from the north’ to attack Jerusalem, as happened at the destruction of the First Temple, because of the sinfulness of its inhabitants.

his book The Jewish War. In memory was of Devorah Bat Avraham Josephus appointed in the year 65 CE as the governor of the Galilean city of Jotapata. In a story that he himself relays, two years after commencing with their attempts, the Roman forces finally successfully besieged Jotapata. As the top level officers, together with Josephus, hid in a pit, Josephus suggested a suicide pact. They would draw straws; the person who pulled out the shortest straw would be assigned to kill all the men and finally to kill himself.
Josephus drew the short straw. However, after all the other men were dead, he did not kill himself. He was instead captured by Vespasian, who took Josephus into captivity, but used him as an advisor, especially in regard to defeating the Jews and destroying Jerusalem. One of the challenges with Josephus is that some of his stories sound similar to other stories of the time. For example, he claims that he had a prophecy that Vespasian would be made emperor. The Talmud (Gittin 56a) states that Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai also had the premonition that Vespasian would become emperor. When Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai’s premonition was proven true, Vespasian offered him three wishes. One of Yochanan’s requests was that the Romans leave the town of Yavneh and its scholars untouched in the war. It later became a stronghold for Rabbininic Judaism. Yet Josephus claims the story as his own. According to Dr Abramson, Josephus’ writing is

One way to understand this conundrum is that in fact Josephus wrote two versions of the book The Jewish War, one in Aramaic, the lingua franca of the Jews of Judea, and one in Greek for the Roman readers. The Aramaic version is lost to us. We don’t actually know what he may have written to his own people. Would that version be one that sees history from the perspective of the victim, rather than the perspective we have today, of the victor?

In 1286, Pope Honorius IV wrote a letter to the archbishops of Canterbury and York that “we have heard that in England the accused and perfidious Jews have done unspeakable things in horrible acts, to the shame of our Creator and the detriment of the Catholic faith.” Shaming and disgracing Jews became commonplace. For example, Sampson son of Samuel of Northampton was sentenced to parade naked through five major cities carrying the entrails of a calf.
Edward, more rigorous and pious than John or Henry III before him, saw little advantage 4in giving the Jews protection. His 1275 Statutes of the Jewry stated that reliance on Jewish moneylending was a religious embarrassment: “For the honour of G-d and the common benefit of the people, the King hath ordained and established, that from henceforth no Jew shall lend anything at usury”.
A common charge against the Jewish community was coin-clipping, whereby silver shavings were taken from the edge of coins and melted down to forge new currency. Whether the Jews clipped coins through desperation to pay the tallages or through criminality, some were certainly guilty. Their activities were condemned by the illustrious Rabbi Meir of Rotenburg (d. 1273). According to John of Oxnead, “all the Jews of England, whatever their status, age or sex were suddenly seized and imprisoned in various castles throughout England with specially appointed guards”. On 17th November 1279, 600 Jews were arrested for coin-clipping and sent to the Tower. As many as 300 were hanged, with heavy fines and property seizures imposed on the remainder.
In 1272 Pope Gregory X had rejected allegations of Jewish ritual murder and insisted there should be no more forced conversions. However, in 1278, Edward gave his support to a papal bull issued by Nicholas III that Jews should be forced to attend Dominican services facilitating conversion. A sincere believer, Edward allowed converts to keep one third of their possessions and relinquished some of his own personal income from the Jewish community in order to support those who were baptised.

Edward’s influence preceded his accession. As early as 1269, he decreed that Jews required a special licence to sell property. In 1271, he instigated laws restricting Jewish financial activity. Later measures required all Jews from the age of seven and above to wear the tabula. All Jews over 12 had to pay 3d towards the funding of the Domus Conversorum (House of the Converts), a building in London to protect and support Jews who had converted to Christianity. He further limited Jewish access to the courts and imposed hefty tallages, imprisoning those unable to pay and deporting their families.
Regardless of this ambiguity, Josephus remains the only eye-witness who wrote down what he saw, most of it corroborated by secular and religious sources. While the Talmud has many of the historical accounts, it relates them primarily for their religious value, rather than just for historical purposes.

The key to property purchasing BY WILLIAM SUSMAN
This June and July is all too much for an avid sportsman like me – tennis, horseracing and the WORLD CUP. Also, it is too much for my wife – hats, caps, fascinators, kitten heels, platforms, flatforms, or block heels, clutch, crossbody, tote, cap sleeves, long sleeves, short sleeves, no sleeves. I say sportsman, but I must emphasise that I really mean commentator, spectator and referee all in one and all from my taupe nappa leather, luxury brand, recliner, corner sofa, oh and grandstand and centre court. Early summer is a fun and busy time of year in the sports calendar, however in the residential property world historically it dips at this time. Maybe it is just ‘meant to be’ so that we can revel in the depths of the sports calendar, or maybe it is the by-product of all the sports! As we are in the throes of the World Cup my work schedule is dependant on the fixtures. As I write this England push forward in their quest for world domination in soccer. Will we see a repeat of 1966? Getting on to the property ladder is three times (a hat-trick) harder today than it was in 1966 when England won the World Cup and the average house was £2,006 compared to today’s average of £215,444. House prices were 106 times higher than they were 52 years ago, growing three times faster than wages. The average UK salary in 1966 was £798, (average annual salary for a ‘premier league’
footballer was £2,288) a figure which has soared to £26,500 in 2018 (£2,600,000 is average now for a ‘premier league’ footballer with salaries topping £10m for the real elite players.) Unfortunately for some, UK house price growth has slowed to a five-year low; the annual rate at which property prices are rising eased to 2% in June, the lowest level since June 2013. London house prices have fallen for the fifth consecutive quarter, with values down by nearly 2% year on year between April and June. In May alone transaction levels fell by 15.4%. If you live out of London and the South East then it is likely that you have fared much better with highest annual growth of 4.4% being achieved in the East Midlands in the last three months. My thoughts are that this will continue for the foreseeable as new buyer enquiries are down and there is only a trickle of properties coming to the market. The slowing of economic activity brought on by the uncertainty of what may happen next March and the squeeze on household incomes is acting as a drag on the housing market activity. Fortunately, for home owners the low interest rates and shortages of good quality properties are continuing to prop up property values. Even with the northern regions doing well now they are still only now around 2007 levels whereas southern regions are well above their 2007 peak with London prices 50% higher than they were in 2007. If you are selling then it’s not all bad news. Buyers have little tolerance for sellers who put their
properties on at premium prices but if you price it realistically or offer a real bargain then the buyers will jump, which will often result in a number of offers typically above the asking price. Buyers in this market are certainly being more “particular” and less inclined to compromise which is why homes that have an obvious drawback are having to reduce their prices the most; therefore unmodernised properties or those near a busy road are suffering. For the unmodernised property how about a bit of wallpapering. Did you know that bubble wrap was original designed to be used as wallpaper for homes, not surprisingly it didn’t sell too well. The key to first time property purchasing is to get saving as early as possible. The first-time buyer in London now needs to save for 17 years to raise enough cash for a 15% deposit. Move out of London and the South East this drops to only 10 years! Government Help to Buy Schemes assist but you only have limited choice of properties as new homebuilders are still not building enough properties and you have to factor in the huge cost increases suffered from the fifth anniversary when you need to start paying back the deposit borrowed from the Government. If your equity and salary hasn’t risen sufficiently in that time you won’t be in a position to re-mortgage and then be forced to sell, putting yourself back to where you were at the start of the process! Like we all dream of England winning the World Cup or winning the singles-title at Wimbledon for £2.25m we can also all dream of owning a second home by the sea in Britain. Sandbanks in Poole is the most expensive seaside town where you will need over £625,000 to buy an average property there; if money is no object, having just won Wimbledon then £2.5m will get you a three bedroom flat on the beachfront. If money is a little
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
tighter and you still want a pad by the sea then look no further than Millport in Scotland where you can pick one up for £81,000. Whilst we are dreaming and drooling with our £2.5m perhaps you will feel more suited to Casa Amor the Majorcan villa that featured as a twist in last year’s series of Love Island, and is making a comeback this series. Another £2.5m on top? then for £5.35m you can buy the comedian David Walliams semi-detached house in Belsize Park. If you are looking for a quick profit on your new home then seek out where the supermarkets are opening. A Waitrose or Marks & Spencer will add about £40,000, Tesco’s only £20,000 but beware of the “budget” supermarkets as they will only increase your value by £2,000. Us Surveyors and Estate Agents are in the service industry and you as the customer deserve the best service and advice as possible. Always seek out those professionals who are qualified and members of professional bodies. If you are getting poor service then do complain; last year, sadly, complaints were up 11% and consumers received close to £1.4m in compensation. Amazingly up until now letting agents have not been required to belong to a Client Money Protection (CMP) scheme. A staggering 40% of letting agents do not currently belong to a scheme and as such your money as a landlord or tenant is completely unprotected. Should the money be stolen or the agent go bust, there is currently no law in place to protect that money and it will be lost, leaving you out
of pocket. From April next year all agents in England will be required to become members of Client Money Protection schemes. If you are currently dealing with an agent then please check that they belong to a CMP scheme. Again Landlords are being targeted by the Government. They want to force landlords to give tenants a minimum three year contract; they have missed the point as 60% of renters actually don’t want longer tenancies. New EPC regulations that have come in this year and further regulations coming next year relating to electrical safety checks and the phasing out of mortgage interest relief are squeezing the buy-to-let landlord out of the market. Notwithstanding this, with good solid advice, for a landlord, residential property still makes a great investment easy to understand and with supply set to be limited for years to come demand is set to continue to be strong. Thanks for taking the time to read my article and I wish you all a great summer.

Wizz Air to Israel Following its successful launch last year of what is now a daily Luton – Tel Aviv service Hungarian airline Wizz Air is to start a new twice weekly flight to Eilat starting 28 October, in effect it takes over from Monarch Airlines which collapsed at the end of 2017. Listed on the London Stock Exchange, and now also registered as a British airline to get over any Brexit problems, Wizz Air flies to over 30 European destinations from the north London airport. Kosher snacks are available on all Israel flights. Mr Yariv Levin, Israel’s Minister of Tourism said “We are delighted that Wizz Air has decided to launch a second route from the UK, its primary route has been from London Luton to Tel Aviv. This is a very exciting time for travel to Israel, with the launch of many new carriers and routes from across the globe. With more carriers flying to Israel it is clear that there is an ever-increasing demand to visit

Israel”. Eilat is unique for visitors to Israel, offering all the benefits of a modern, vibrant city alongside all the comforts of a luxury resort. Sharon E. Bershadsky, Director of the Israel Government Tourist Office (IGTO) for the UK and Ireland said “Eilat benefits from the warm and dry desert climate all year round whilst sitting on the edge of the amazing Red Sea and surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery – it makes Eilat the perfect winter sun destination”. Wizz Air will be moving to the new Ramon Airport when it opens, expected by the end of the year. Sited on the main Route 90 it is only 15 miles from the city centre. The old Eilat Airport will close. https://wizzair.com CAA reports on disabled passengers The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has published a new report highlighting the progress made by UK airports to help passengers whose disabilities are hidden, such as autism, dementia and hearing loss and many other conditions that are not immediately obvious. This comes against a background of record numbers of people with all types of disability flying. If you are disabled, or flying with someone who is disabled the recommendation is that you contact the airport concerned well before your flight. Most have a link on their website and for wheelchair passengers low counters are now being added to make it easier for conversation. Another form of assistance is giving passengers the option to wear a lanyard or wristband to help make staff aware that they might need extra help at the security search area or elsewhere in the airport. Specialist staff are more and more being trained to provide enhanced disability awareness and make life easier for both passengers and supervisors. Also being introduced are

family or assistance security lanes, which passengers with hidden disabilities can use, providing a less stressful and rushed experience. Look out for the special lanes at Gatwick. Watch for a wide range of accessible information for people with hidden disabilities, including pictorial guides, videos and other online guides on what to expect at the airport, especially at the security search stage. Jewish History tour of Germany 1323 August Hosted by Professor Shnayer Leiman this fully kosher ten-day intensive tour starts at Hamburg and completes at Frankfurt. It takes in Berlin, Munich (for Dachau), Frankfurt, Nuremburg and Mainz, where a visit is planned to the Gutenberg Museum dedicated to the city’s most important invention – printing. Five-star hotels throughout and all supervised. The trip begins with a short overview of the history of the Jews in Germany, and of Hamburg in particular and includes the Mercado Shopping Mall in Altona, built controversy above an old Jewish Cemetery – literally above. At dinner the group will be joined by Rabbi Shlomo Bistritsky, the Chabad and Community Rabbi of Hamburg at the Grand Elysée Hotel, home for the next two nights. The next day takes in the Vilna Gaon and the Miniatur Wunderland – the largest model railway of its kind in the world. Weather permitting the day ends with a short cruise on Lake Alster just to get the balance right. Berlin is a must for German visits and includes Oranienburger Strasse Synagogue, which somehow survived Kristallnacht and the allied bombs, and was renovated in 1995. Shabbat is at the Central Orthodox Shul of Berlin on Joachimstaler Strasse and meals there with the community. Included is a stop in Nuremberg to visit the Nazi Documentation Centre, located at the massive stadium where Hitler held his infamous party rallies. Today it is a museum dedicated to educating Germans about their Nazi past. Every day is a busy day and most evenings include the local community and rabbi. It promises to be a full educational trip. www.zvilapian.com

Parshat Pinchas Pinchas, the grandson of Aron, is granted a reward for having killed the Simeonite prince, Zimri and the Midianite princess. Hashem gives him a pledge of peace and the Kehunah. The people are counted in a census and it is discovered that there are six hundred and one thousand, seven hundred and thirty men between the ages of twenty and sixty. Moshe is told how the land is to be shared by lottery among the tribes and the Israelite families. The tribe of Levi is counted as a separate entity, as it will be serving G-d in the Temple and will not be given a share in the Holy Land. The five daughters of Tzelafchad plead with Moshe that they be given the share of the land, which was owned by their father, who died without leaving any sons behind. G-d grants their request and it becomes part of the laws of inheritance that if a man dies and has only daughters and no sons in his lifetime, the daughters shall be entitled to inherit from him. Moshe appoints Joshua as the person who shall take over from him as the next leader of the people who shall enter with them into the Land of Israel once Moshe has died. The Parshah ends with a long list of the offerings for each day, and the extra offerings brought on Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh (first of the month), and the festivals of Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret.

➊ Why was Pinchas not originally a kohen? ➋ Why was Moav spared the fate of Midian? ➌ What does the yud and hey added to the family names testify? ➍ Korach and his congregation became a “sign.” What do they signify? ➎ Why did Korach’s children survive? ➊ 25:13 - Kehuna (priesthood) was given to Aharon and his sons (not grandsons), and to any of their descendants born after they were anointed. Pinchas, Aharon’s grandson, was born prior to the anointing. ➋ 25:18 - For the sake of Ruth, a future descendant of Moav. ➌ 26:5 - That the families were truly children of their tribe. These two letters spell G-d’s Name. ➍ 26:10 - That kehuna was given forever to Aharon and his sons, and that no one should ever dispute this. ➎ 26:11 - Because they repented.

STORY LOST OPPORTUNITIES Chaim, look at that crowd of people! Wow, I wonder what is going on Avi? Let’s get a closer look. Everyone seems to be waiting to get into that little shul over there. I wonder what is inside. Let’s ask one of the people waiting in line. Excuse me sir, can you please tell me why this crowd of people has gathered? Everyone is waiting to see someone, young man. Whom are they waiting to see? He must be very important if so many people are waiting so long to see him. He is very important, young man. He is one of the Gedolim. One of the world’s foremost Rabbis is visiting here from Jerusalem. We are all waiting in line to see him. Some want to ask him questions about halachot (Torah laws). Others want to ask him for advice in difficult life matters. Others want to receive a blessing from him. It is said that his blessings actually come true. Wow. What a great person is in our midst. This is a real opportunity. What do you say Chaim? Should we wait here in line to see the great Rabbi? Hmmm. It looks like a long line Avi. We could be here over an hour. I’m hungry. I was going to go home and eat lunch, then play outside for a while. Excuse me
sir, if I left and came back, do you think that I would be able to see the Rabbi? I would not count on it young man. There are many people waiting. The Rabbi is not a young man. There is a limit to the number of people that he can see. He may close his doors by then. What you are saying, sir is that I have an opportunity to see one of the Gedolim now. If I leave, I may lose that opportunity forever. That is correct, young man. The same thing happened in this week’s parsha. Young man; you must be a very big expert on Chumash. I do not recall anything like this in the parsha. Look in the verses about the korbonos (sacrifices) brought in the times of the Beis HaMikdash (Holy Temple). There was a special korbon brought every Shabbos called the Olas Shabbos. This korbon consisted of two lambs, along with their meal, oil, and wine offerings. The Torah calls this the “Shabbos offering in its Shabbos.” Why does the Torah need to tell us that the offering is brought in its Shabbos? Good question, young man. Rashi has a good answer. The offering can only be brought on that particular Shabbos. If for some reason the Olas Shabbos was not brought one
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Shabbos, the Kohen could not offer up a double offering the following Shabbos. When the time passed, the opportunity was lost. Now we have an opportunity to meet with this great man. When he leaves, the opportunity will be lost. I guess you have decided to wait in line. Right you are sir. While we are waiting, can I share another thought with you? Why certainly, young man. You are a very insightful person. Thank you. I was thinking that many of the mitzvos are bound to a particular time. If they are not performed in their time, the opportunity is lost. Young man, Shlomo HaMelech wrote something like that in Koheles. “Everything has its season and there is a time for everything under the heavens.” In our daily lives, we have our schedules of learning, tefillah (prayers), meals, resting, cleaning, etc. The best way to do these things is in the proper time set aside for them. Look, as we are talking, we have reached the head of the line. I am so excited to see this great Rabbi. I am going to ask him for a blessing that I will be able to take advantage of all of life’s opportunities. Young man, may the blessing come true. Amen.

Parshat Pinchas
In a nutshell In this week’s sedrah, we read about how G-d rewarded Pinhas for his act for zealousness. He is granted a special treaty of peace and G-d honours him with the priesthood (Kehunah). After the plague, G-d asks Moshe to count all of the men between the ages of 20 and 60. These are the men who will be granted a share of the Holy Land. The total number of these men amounts to 601,730.
G-d also tells Moshe how the land will be shared between the twelve tribes. The tribe of Levi is counted as a separate entity as it will be charged with serving G-d in the Temple and consequently, it will not be given a share in the Holy Land. The five daughters of Tzelophchad ask Moses to allow them to inherit their father’s land. G-d grants them
the land and the law changes in that whereas prior thereto, if a man died without having had any sons, his daughters inherited nothing, from that moment on, the daughters would now be entitled to inherit from their father in the absence of any sons. G-d tells Moshe to climb to the top of Mount Avarim, from where he can view the Holy Land before he dies. Moshe then appoints Joshua bin Nun
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
as his successor. This week’s sedrah ends by relaying the daily offerings as well as the additional offerings sacrificed on Shabbat and festivals. According to tradtion, Pinchas went up to heaven alive and became Eliyahu Hanavi who attends our seder night every year and our Bit Mila’s too. Shabbat Shalom

News Bites HOW DO ANTS TALK TO EACH OTHER? Have you heard an ant talk? Unlikely. Yet, these tiny creatures have amazing ways to communicate with each other that includes rubbing parts of their stomach to create vibrations and sharing food mouth-to-mouth. Calling out A few years ago English and Spanish scientists studying ants inserted tiny microphones (or mikes) inside a nest of 400 red ants. They were thus able to record the sounds that ants made by rubbing ridges (raised parts) on their bodies. Amazingly, ants seemed to link different sounds to different behaviors. For example, a certain sound made by the queen (who rules a colony) put the ants on high alert where they stayed without moving for hours and attacked anyone who came nearby. Groups of ants also seemed to have their own unique sounds. It is still not clear how the ants “heard the sounds”. Interestingly, predators that fed

A bulk of that population lives in the grasslands of Kaziranga National Park in Assam and smaller numbers live in other parks such as the Manas National Park also in Assam and Dudhwa National Park in Uttar Pradesh. In fact in Kaziranga, rhino populations may be crossing the number that can actually be supported by the park-this is seen in the fact that the rhino, normally a solitary animal, comes together
in groups in Kaziranga. Not out of danger Although numbers seem to be increasing, this large herbivore (grass eating animal) is not out of danger. As recently as 2013, 41 rhinos were killed by poachers who hunt it for the horn which is used in Chinese traditional medicine. Horns sell for huge amounts of money, making the rhino a target for poachers. Why is the rhino important? It is a mega-herbivore (along with the elephant and hippo) that can shape the habitat it dwells in. By trampling grasslands and selectively eating certain grasses, the rhino shapes the grassland. It also helps in seed dispersal through the seeds that pass out in its poop! States like Assam are important for the survival of the rhino. The state hopes to increase population of the animal to around 3000 in the next three years and spread the animal over several national parks. Such plans are important if the rhino is to continue its forward march.

The Waves of War
PART 10
BY CHAYA SANDLER The Princess manages to convince the revolution to help her rescue her brother in return for helping them overthrow the kingdom.
At least the sun was in his eyes. The Prince supposed he had to be grateful for small mercies, at least he couldn’t see the bloodthirsty, jeering crowd. They marched him up to the gallows and the crowd went wild. They slipped the noose around his neck. They tightened it until he could feel the coarse roughness of the twine cutting into his skin. He closed his eyes, breathed in deeply, savouring his last breath. The lever dropped andAndNothing. He opened his eyes in the shocked silence. And stared straight at his rescuer. The crowd was stunned. The King’s face was bulging, turning all sort of colours. He began to shout but his words were drowned out by the yell of the archer and the responding cheer of hundreds of people. They came from everywhere. They spilled out of alleyways, burst out of cellars and trapdoors. They rose from amongst the crowd, they were the crowd and suddenly there was chaos and confusion, solders and revolutionaries and ordinary citizens running, fighting, choosing sides and turning on their own. “Missed me?” He spun around to find his grinning sister, eyes shining wildly. She was wearing a commoners dress and she had a dagger in each hand. She cut his rope and handed him one of her daggers. He regarded
her sadly, “you know there is no way they can win. A few hundred against thousands of trained soldiers?” “They have spirit and conviction, it will carry them through.” “Spirit and conviction… the sword slices through all hearts, no matter how true.” “Then they will die for what they believe in.” “They will die for nothing.” “Not nothing! They will stir the masses and if our uprising doesn’t work, then the next one will.” She stamped her foot for emphasis but the Prince was enraged, he grabbed the dagger out of her hand. “Our?! You did this?” “Yes.” He stared at her so seriously, so solemnly that she felt chills down her spine. “Oh sister… What have you done?” “What needed doing. Our kingdom is probably gone by now, this kingdom can still be saved.” He turned away from her in disgust. “I should have thought you had more sense than this foolhardy mass suicide attempt. They are losing, look!” The Princess lowered her head. He was right. However bravely the revolutionaries were fighting, they were outnumbered by far and they had no training, no proper weapons, they needed a few hundred trained soldiers to save them. But there was no chance of that. “What should we do?” She whispered sadly.
The Prince shook his head gravely, angrily. “You have done enough. We have our own responsibilities. Let us leave. “He added sternly before she could protest, “Now.” They walked morosely out of the city. The sun was in their eyes again. The Princess couldn’t see anything. Quite fitting she thought, there is no hope to see anymore. “Missed me?” The Princess almost shrieked. Sitting atop a horse, decked out in armour, in her armour, bearing a flag, her flag, was a very familiar face. “Hamish!” He smiled brightly and tried to get off the horse. He ended up flat on his face and though she felt bad, she couldn’t help but giggle. Same old Hamish. He jumped up quickly and tried to lean heroically against the horse. He didn’t manage very well and wobbled quite a bit. “I thought you had abandoned me.” He snorted and waved his hand. “Nah. It’s a long story. I met some friends of yours.” He gestured behind him and this time she did shriek. The Prince was busy shaking hands and bear hugging his men. Their men.
--------------------------------------“You need a flag.” Alex frowned at the Princess. “I hadn’t thought about that.” “Well, you can’t have a kingdom without

a flag.” He ran his fingers through his long hair nervously. “I never thought we would get this far. If not for your help, we would never be standing here today. This glorious day.” “You sound bitter.” He sighed, jumped up onto a wall and sat down heavily. “I never wanted to run a kingdom. I don’t know how. I don’t want it. I just wanted things to be better, to get rid of the corrupt royals. That was my dream, my passion, my reason for being… and now.. it’s done and I don’t know how to feel. I don’t know what to do” “ You rejoice, you rebuild!” “But I don’t know how! He got up and slid to the floor, pulling at his hair desperately. “Help me.” He said suddenly, He sprang up and pleaded with her, “Stay here, be my guide, be our guide, You’re a Princess, you can run a Kingdom.” “But…” “I think that’s a good idea.” They both whirled round to see the Prince leaning against the wall on the other side of the room. How long had he been there she wondered? Long enough it seemed. “I can take care of our Kingdom, Between my men and Alex’s we’ll overthrow the invaders in mere weeks. There’s no reason for you to come back. Here you can do something. Hamish is coming with me by the way.” That made her smile. She could just see Hamish running around the ramparts in her castle. Falling off them probably. The image made her laugh and soon they were all laughing. The wars were oer. Now it was time for some peace. TO BE CONTINUED

become the driving force behind the establishment of the entire organisation of ALSF before her death from cancer at age eight. ALSF encourages people to set up lemonade stands and to donate the proceeds raised to the charity. Consequently, every year after her initial diagnosis at age two, Maya and her siblings would host a lemonade stand in aid of ALSF. Little could anyone predict, however, that she would be beset by the dreaded illness once more at age ten. By the time Maya was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, she’d only been on this earth a decade but her sensitivity and thoughtfulness for others belied her youth. Though grateful for the generosity and kindness of her many well-wishers who showered her with gifts, Maya had immense sympathy for fellow patients on the oncology ward who were not fortunate to be blessed with the same level of support from family and friends. With a maturity well beyond her years, she was also acutely aware that though her recovery was not guaranteed, there were some patients for whom the doctors held no hope of survival whatsoever. Her heart bled for them. Consequently, through online forums and all the means of contact at her disposal, she beseeched those who knew her - and many who did not – to refrain from giving her presents but to rather donate money to ALSF. She was motivated to set up an online “virtual” lemonade stand. Maya explained that she was too unwell to actually sell lemonade but entreated people to contribute money as if it were being sold. Although some family members and school friends had felt impelled to set up actual lemonade stands in her honour and thereby raise funds for ALSF, the virtual lemonade stand reached a far larger number of people all over the world due to being featured online. Moreover, the fact that one could simply give money online without leaving one’s home, appealed to many people and the response was quite simply overwhelming. To date, Maya has raised the staggering sum of over four hundred thousand dollars for research into childhood cancers. Poignantly, Maya’s commitment to ALSF also
proved to be of help to her. She came into contact with a genetic researcher whose work had been funded by ALSF and the lady was able to conclusively determine that the two cancers with which she had been afflicted were totally unrelated and that Wilms’ Tumour had not been genetic at all in any event. This provided much relief to Maya and her family. Whilst Maya is the first to admit that sustained bouts of chemotherapy and radiotherapy were far from pleasant, she asserts that her allegiance to this charitable cause gave her a sense of fulfilment and kept despondency at bay. She and her family were enthralled by the many donations from friends, family, acquaintances and complete strangers. It became a welcome and exciting distraction to watch the online website being updated several times a day to reflect the unbelievable number of daily payments being made to the charity. Maya, in her inimitable modesty, is eager to praise the public for their magnanimity whilst deflecting all credit from herself. It was, after all, she who had provided the impetus for the entire project. Indeed, when asked what she would like to be when she grows up, Maya readily responds that she would like to be a philanthropist. She is seemingly totally oblivious to the fact that many would say that she has already achieved this goal now, at age thirteen! Though this column is devoted to a woman of worth rather than a child of worth, Maya Rigler has achieved in thirteen years that which many do not accomplish in an entire lifetime. She has displayed courage, compassion and concern for others, notwithstanding her own immense pain and suffering. She is quite simply the embodiment of the words of Eshet Chayil – “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue”.

Time is fast approaching for the
12th European Cantors Convention, in the beautiful city of Prague. (Wednesday 21 November 2.00pm – Sunday 25 November 1.00pm).
The theme of "Yamim Noraim - Combining the Traditional with the New", will be approached by two of the world’s finest exponents
Cantor Naftali Herstik and Maestro Raymond Goldstein. Attending too will be cantors
Nogradi, Fekete and Rudas from Hungary, Cantors Meissner and Zelermeyer from Canada and many chazzanim from the UK, the USA and elsewhere in Europe ECA is privileged to have 14 superb young cantors – the future of the profession, from the Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute’s (TACI) – who, as a choir will create a Shabbat of glorious choral and cantorial music in the services and for a gala concert in Prague’s most beautiful synagogues. If you missed the ECA convention last time, then grab the opportunity of touching the magic of Prague and TACI. If you came last time it will be even better. As you know it’s best to book flights early and there is a surcharge for later bookers. A programme for accompanying guests, and for those who just want to experience Shabbat in Jewish Prague, will be provided, including accommodation, for Friday to Sunday 23-25 November. This group will join with the Cantors Convention for Shabbat services and meals as well as the cantorial concert, and also provides expertly guided sightseeing tours of Jewish Prague and a trip to Theresienstadt concentration camp.
