ANNEXATION STILL IN BALANCE BY DAVID SAFFER
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called on Israel not to annex the West Bank. Pressure globally and within the Knesset has intensified on Prime

Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal for settlements and the Jordan Valley that was due to start yesterday. It has yet to be ratified for a variety of reasons, but Johnson’s views, as “Israel’s friend” in a frank opinion piece in Ynet, offered a stark warning for Israel’s unity government. Johnson’s teenage and governmental experiences have given him a “profound attachment” towards the State of Israel. The UK’s commitment to Israel’s security is “unshakable”, he said, but he is fearful annexation will fail to secure Israel’s borders and longterm interests. “Israel’s enemies would seize upon it (annexation) and use it against those in the Middle East who want to see progress,” Johnson explained. Reminding Netanyahu that the UK has defended Israel in minority at the UN against disproportionate criticism, he added, “Annexation would represent a violation of international law. It would also be a gift to those who want to perpetuate the old stories about Israel. “I profoundly hope that annexation does not go ahead. If it does, the UK will not recognise any changes to the 1967 lines,
except those agreed between both parties.” The United Nations, European Union and numerous Arab countries have also stated annexation violates international law. Johnson called for all parties to re-engage and “hammer out a solution” that would require compromise on all sides. Whilst not underestimating the challenges for a lasting peace, he said a true, lasting security for Israel must allow justice and security for Israelis and Palestinians. “I refuse to believe that this is impossible,” Johnson said. “We will work tirelessly with the U.S. and other partners in the Arab world and Europe to try to make peace a reality.” Johnson concluded that all sides return to the negotiating table. “That must be our goal,” he said. “Annexation would only take us further away from it.” The past days have seen little movement from Israel’s greatest ally, the United States, though talks have continued. Arab nations have threatened regional instability. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Record numbers mark Rebbe’s yahrzeit BY SIMCHA ABIR Thousands of people adhering to public health guidelines visited the grave of the Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson to mark the 26th anniversary of his passing last week. However, as it was impossible for the normal number of mourners to pay respect at the Rebbe’s grave due to the Covid-19 pandemic an estimated 45,000 people participated in the largest Zoom conference recorded. Communities logged on to 26 interconnected broadcasts from North America, South America, Europe, Israel and South Africa across Zoom and other platforms. Each Jewish community around the world participated in prayer, Torah study, storytelling, song and inspiration. Zoom have not run a single event with so many virtual rooms so with households watching each device organisers estimate a landmark high viewing. Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, chairman of the umbrella organisation of the ChabadLubavitch movement, recited a communal letter at the ohel. The event included live davening at the Rebbe’s grave, tributes to families affected by the pandemic and community greetings. Speakers emphasised the Rebbe’s love for every person, and following his example, encouraged viewers to learn Torah

and perform acts of goodness and kindness at every opportunity. Zoom and Arnen production company co-ordinated the global “Barcheinu Avinu” live broadcast with Vaad who provide Chabad-Lubavitch educational programming. The event required an extensive team of technicians, cinematographers and sound experts. Chazzan Berel Zucker and the Rabin Brothers acapella group accompanied by Cantor Berel Zucker led Chabad melodies. They were joined by Rabbi Mendel Lerman, representing a generation that have never met the Rebbe, during proceedings. Rabbi Chaim Shaul Brook, who recently recovered from Covid-19, Rabbi Choni Milecki, a musician from Sydney, addressed everyone watching on. “This was the world’s largest interactive Zoom event,” said producer Ronen Peled, creative director of Chabad’s annual International Conference. The online Zoom event was not without logistical challenges as organisers welcomed dozens of groups. “Zoom told us that they’ve never had a single event with so many virtual rooms connected with the same broadcast,” he said. “Until now, their platform had a cap of 1,000 people in a single room, or a webinar with 300 cameras, the rest are passive viewers and are not seen.”

Board calls for action against Al-Faifi BY ADAM MOSES The Board of Deputies has called on the Plaid Cymru to ban Sahar Al-Faifi from the party. The controversial Seneed prospect falsely claimed that Israel had trained American police officers responsible for the deaths of African Americans in support of Maxine Peake’s article linking Israel to the racist killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week. Sir Keir Starmer sacked Shadow Education Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey for retweeting the ‘conspiracy theory’ last week. Al-Faifi has was suspended by the Welsh Party for previous anti-Semitic posts last year. Reinstated after deleting them and apologising, Al-Faifi has illustrated she will not change her anti-Israel views. Regarding the latest post, Al-Faifi tweeted, “If you wonder where did these American cops trained, look no further than Israel. Oppression is one and the struggle is transitional.” Sheila Gewolb, BoD senior vice president and Cardiff resident, in a letter to Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price, made the BoD position clear. “We do not understand why the Party saw fit to lift her suspension earlier this year,” she noted. “It is clear that Ms Al-Faifi has taken this as a signal that she has carte blanche to continue to promote such conspiracy theories.” Ms Gewold called on Price to show he is “serious about anti-Semitism and Al-Faifi in particular. “She (Al-Faifi) has had too many chances already and it is clear that she will not change,” said Ms Gewold. Plaid Cymru’s William Rees reportedly backed the Board’s position, noting that anti-Semitism should “not have a home” in the party. Rees said he would express his concerns again about Al-Faifi following her latest post by calling on Price and the NEC to show leadership “This saga has gone on for far too long,” he said. Rees added, “As Plaid Cymru’s candidate in Cardiff Central I believe when senior members of the Jewish community in Cardiff express their concerns, we should listen to them.” Caerphilly member Hefin David likewise

called for action from Price. Connecting Israel, Floyd’s murder and the Black Lives Matter movement required a “leap of imagination,” he said. The Jewish community of Wales has already called on the Party to reverse its decision to reinstate Al-Faifi. Plaid Cymru are “investigating” the situation regarding Al-Faifi. If Al-Faifi succeeds in next years’ Senedd election for the South Wales Central region she would be the Welsh parliament’s first elected BME woman member. Meantime, former Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood and Gwynedd councillor Steve Collings have both backed Long-Bailey. Wood tweeted an Amnesty article of farleft evidences of a conspiracy theory linking Israel to Floyd’s death, even though the article makes no such claim and Amnesty International have released a statement denying any link between Israel and Floyd. Collings wrote on Facebook that evidence was “circumstantial” and drew an analogy equating Israel to ISIS and Hamas Commenting on Collings quotes, the Campaign Against Antisemitism noted, “It is difficult to understand what his ramblings achieved other than to make the offensive and anti-Semitic equation of the Jewish state with racist genocidal terror groups that are obsessed with the annihilation of Jews.” A CAA spokesperson added, “Plaid Cymru will now be under pressure to act after two of its leading politicians have come to the defence of Long-Bailey.”

2 JULY 2020 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 With major issues unresolved Israel’s leader has a political conundrum to manage. An official debate on annexation was set to begin in the Knesset yesterday. Netanyahu confirmed annexation discussions with the US would continue “in the coming days” following talks with US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and White House emissary Avi Berkowitz. US President Donald Trump wants Israel to take advantage of a “historic opportunity” but White House opposition has called for a cautious approach as it could hurt harm his chances of re-election in November. Israel’s major party leaders have reportedly disagreed over the timing on annexation. Netanyahu is clear on this month but Defence Minister Benny Gantz insists the priority is the battling Covid-19. “Anything unrelated to the battle against the coronavirus will wait,” Israel’s media reported. “This is not the time to tackle the issue,” he added. “I believe that the Trump peace plan is the right political-security framework for the State of Israel. We must do it right by bringing in as many partners into the discussion as possible, with international backing. “One million unemployed people do not know what we are talking about right now.

TO ADVERTISE CALL 020 3906 8488 Most of them are worried about what they’re going to do tomorrow morning.” Divisions in the Knesset persist. Former Justice Minister and far-right Yamina leader Ayelet Shaked accused Netanyahu of backing down to pressure from Gantz and Arab members. “July 1 will be remembered as the day no historic move was made,” she said. Shaked appealed to Netanyahu to convince Trump’s administration to Jordan Valley area to back his plan, adding she would not be annexed by Israel back reports he may exchange land to the Palestinian Authority for annexed areas. Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman criticised Israel’s leader for stalling. “Netanyahu had no intention of carrying out any annexation,” he said during a visit to Maale Adumin. Map showing proposed area of annexation “Begin annexed the Golan Heights and the international screaming and shouting eventually died down and was forgotten,” he added. “It is worth paying a price for action but not for empty talk.” A Hamas spokesperson said last week that Israel’s plans were a declaration of war. Settlers, meantime, have expressed differing views. Some will not accept “any plan” that divides the land of Israel while others back it. Similar viewpoints resonate throughout Israel. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, this week described annexation as “disastrous” for the wider region. Israeli media reported that Netanyahu
may scale back his plans in a symbolic move. Bachelet warned this also would create a “highly combustible mix.” “Annexation is illegal,” Bachelet said in a statement from Geneva. “Even the most minimalist form of annexation would lead to increased violence and loss of life, as walls are erected, security forces deployed and the two populations brought into closer proximity.” Bachelet added, “The shockwaves of annexation will last for decades and will be extremely damaging to Israel as well as to the Palestinians. However, there is still time to reverse this decision.” Bachelet has called on Israel to halt “illegal” annexation plans before. The Foreign Ministry dismissed her comments. A spokesman noted, “Israel long PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA ago lost faith in the ability of the commissioner to advance human rights in our region in a fair manner.” In related news, Netanyahu addressed an evangelical Christian group at the weekend. He said, “I am ready for negotiations and believe that many Arab states hope we will enter such negotiations with the Palestinians.” Praising Trump’s peace deal, he said the president’s vision calls for a realistic twostate solution. “Applying Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria in any future peace agreement will not reduce chances for peace but will advance the peace,” he said.

Starmer’s resolve to be tested over Long-Bailey
Sir Keir Starmer and Rebecca Long-Bailey
BY DAVID SAFFER Sir Keir Starmer’s resolve to instil a zero tolerance anti-Semitism policy in the Labour Party is set to be severely tested. Fighting anti-Semitism is headline news again following the Rebecca Long-Bailey ‘conspiracy theory’ affair last week but behind the scenes clear rifts remain. Labour’s new leader took a huge step in restoring trust with the Jewish community by sacking his Shadow Education Secretary after she retweeted an article in The Independent by Labour supporter Maxine Peake that included a conspiracy theory linking Israel to the racist killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. And he has followed that up when questioned by media and left-wing factions in his party. “The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services,” Peake said. She has since clarified the article was “inaccurate”. Starmer told Good Morning Britain earlier this week that the article pointed a finger at Israel if there was a problem “anywhere” in the world. “I took the view that was anti-Semitic,” Starmer said. He added, “Rebecca had tweeted about it. I wanted her to take her tweet down straight away. That didn’t happen. And I asked her to stand down.” Starmer stood by his decision in a virtual meeting with the Socialist Campaign Group. Noting the meeting was “constructive”, his mind was “made up” on the matter. Over 20 Labour left-wing MPs called on Starmer to reverse his Long-Bailey decision. The far-left group’s membership, which includes former leader Jeremy Corbyn and former Shadow ministers Diane Abbott and Richard Burgon, tellingly spent the rest of the session discussing Israel. Campaign Against Antisemitism noted, “It is extraordinary but wholly unsurprising
PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA
that a meeting precipitated by the offensive injection of Israel into an unrelated matter is devoted to discussion of Israel.” Regarding the Peake article, CAA said, “This is an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory, as it needlessly and baselessly injects the Jewish state into a matter that has nothing to do with it. Even Ms Peake was forced to admit it was untrue.” Peake has since backtracked on the newspaper story following intense criticism. “I feel it’s important for me to clarify that, when talking to The Independent, I was inaccurate in my assumption of American Police training & its sources,” she noted on Twitter. “I find racism & antisemitism abhorrent & I in no way wished, nor intended, to add fodder to any views of the contrary.” Peake’s comments have been dismissed by CAA who called on the BBC to ban her from television and radio platforms until she “formally apologises” for promoting an anti-Semitic trope and agrees to undertake anti-Semitism training. “Her mealy-mouthed ‘clarification’ is not enough,” they noted. “If the BBC fails to act after having taken strong action against some of its own presenters for racial comments against other minorities, the public will rightly conclude that it has a double standard when it comes to antisemitism.” Tory MP Andrew Bridgen backed CAA’s viewpoint. “The BBC prides itself on championing minorities,” he said. “It would be extraordinary if it didn’t take action. If a Labour MP lost her job for retweeting Peake’s interview, how can Peake herself escape punishment for the anti-Jewish sentiments she expressed in that interview?’ Corbyn reportedly appealed to Starmer to take a tough line on Israeli policy, John McDonnell instigated a petition while Burgon tweeted Long-Bailey should not have been sacked. The left-wing group’s stance was forthcoming from MPs Claudia Webbe, Ian Lavery, Clive Lewis, Nadia Whittome and Zarah
Sultana, a new MP with a record of anti-Jewish statements. A statement from the group supporting Long-Bailey noted, “It is not racist to criticise the repressive actions of states nor to point out the links between repressive authorities.” CAA called on Starmer to discipline MPs who defended Long-Bailey. Support for Starmer has come from Shadow Cabinet members. Ed Miliband told the BBC that Long-Bailey was not anti-Semitic but had made a “significant error of judgement”. The Shadow Business secretary backed Starmer in taking “very strong” action as it was wrong to link IDF tactics to Floyd’s killing. “What this underlines is the fact that Keir recognises the gravity of the hurt that has been caused to the Jewish community over the last few years,” he explained. “Over the centuries when calamitous things have happened, Jews have been blamed and that is why there was an anti-Semitism issue in relation to this and that is why I believe Keir took the right decision.” Shadow Work and Pensions secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, told Sky News an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory could not be ignored. “We deserve no more chances with the Jewish community to win back the trust that has been lost,” he said. “Keir promised zero tolerance and that has to mean zero tolerance.” Reynolds added, “If someone is looking at the terrible scenes in America and somehow trying to change the blame to Israel, the anti-Semitic warning lights should be flashing to anyone who sees that in print or hears something like that.” Margaret Beckett told LBC Radio, “If he (Starmer) had handled it any other way it would have made things worse with the Jewish community and hopefully given this, issues the priority he said he would give it.” Shadow Welsh Secretary Nia Griffith said defenders of Long-Bailey are guilty of anti-Semitism when questioned on the matter.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
“Well I think they are and I think they’re also in danger of going backwards and going back over old arguments and old mistakes because what we need now is clear, decisive action to make sure that we root out antisemitism in the party,” she noted. A spokesman for Welsh Labour Grassroots, who defended Long-Bailey and Peake, however distanced itself from the shadow minister’s comments. “Anti-Semitism is abhorrent and the party has rightly taken robust action to root it out. “Not everyone accused of anti-Semitism is demonstrably guilty, however, and there has to be scope for debate over whether certain statements, which are not explicitly aimed at Jewish people, suggest an anti-Semitic worldview. “To claim otherwise reflects a draconian intolerance that goes against Labour’s best traditions.” Former London Mayor Ken Livingstone also, but not surprisingly, defended Long-Bailey on LBC. “Making a mistake about politics or getting a sentence wrong doesn’t mean you’re anti-Semitic,” he said. Livingstone dismissed anti-Semitism was an issue in the party. “In my 50 years in the party, I heard one racist comment. If you’re a racist, you’re not going to join the Labour Party, certainly if you’re anti-Semitic. Why join the Labour Party which has some of the most prominent Jewish politicians in decades?” Long-Bailey is the first high profile casualty of the Starmer leadership. Her downfall came after being instructed by Labour to take an agreed clarification and original retweet down. She tweeted, “I could not do this in good conscience without the issuing of a press statement of clarification.” Starmer’s office confirmed the article contained an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. “As leader of the Labour party, Keir has been clear that restoring trust with the Jewish community is a number one priority,” they noted. “Anti-Semitism takes many different forms and it is important that we all are vigilant against it.” Starmer told an online press briefing he had asked Long-Bailey to step down. “She shared the article which has got, in my view, anti-Semitic conspiracy theories in it,” he said. “My primary focus is on rebuilding trust with the Jewish communities. I didn’t think sharing that article was in keeping with that primary objective.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl thanked Starmer for backing his vow on anti-Semitism. Long-Bailey’s comments were “pathetic” and position “untenable”,” she said. CAA chief executive Gideon Falter said, “Sir Keir’s decision sends a clear message to those in the Labour Party’s ranks who still think that antisemitism is a grey area.” Falter continued, “We were disconcerted that one of Sir Keir’s first moves was to appoint her (Long-Bailey) to his Shadow Cabinet given her long history of denying the extent of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, but he has put that right today. We now expect that Long-Bailey will be the subject of disciplinary proceedings under an overhauled system which must be fair, transparent and efficient.”

Leaders condemn BLM UK tweet
The offending tweet
BY ADAM MOSES Jewish community leaders have criticised Black Lives Matter UK tweeting support for the Palestinians regarding Israel’s West Bank annexation proposals. The movement said it “stands beside our Palestinian comrades” on social media, adding “FREE PALESTINE”. BLM also claimed “Zionism” has “gagged” Britain. Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl, lamented the post but stood by Black people fighting for justice. She tweeted, “It is beyond disappointing that BLM UK, a supposedly anti-racist organisation, has leaned into the anti-Semitic trope that British politics is gagged in

terms of debating Israel, a claim particularly preposterous because Israel is one of the most discussed foreign policy issues in this country. However, the failings of this particular group will not stop us standing alongside Black people in their quest for justice, whether inside or outside our community.” Campaign Against Antisemitism commented, “The BLM movement should embrace solidarity from Jews. There have been calls for violence against us from prominent BLM supporters with no official condemnation. Now from the official UK BLM account, we hear the lie that fighting antisemitism has ‘gagged’ legitimate debate.
“Zionism is the movement for the self-determination of Jews. The right to the ‘self-determination of peoples’ is universal and enshrined in Article 1 of the UN charter. So-called ‘anti-Zionism’ exclusively denies Jews that universal right and is therefore anti-Semitic. “BLM should aspire to be a movement against racism that unifies people and achieves lasting change, not a movement that spreads hatred and achieves lasting division. “Educate yourselves. You cannot fight prejudice with prejudice.” CAA continually fights injustice and noted on its website how an iconic civil rights leader had exposed bigotry in the past.
They wrote, “BLM is treading a wellworn path walked by many extremists and abhorred by real civil rights leaders like Dr Martin Luther King Jr, who once told a student in Boston who had made a comment attacking ‘Zionists’: “When people criticise ‘Zionists’, they mean ‘Jews’. You’re talking antisemitism!” The BoD and CAA’s response followed BLM’s UK account tweeting, “As Israel moves forward with the annexation of the West Bank, and mainstream British politics is gagged of the right to critique Zionism, and Israel’s settler colonial pursuits, we loudly and clearly stand beside our Palestinian comrades. Free Palestine.”

Israel’s tourism hit as cases rise
An empty Ben Gurion airport last week
BY SIMCHA ABIR The tourism industry in Israel this summer is set to be severely hit as coronavirus cases rise. Israel reached a new daily high of 773 cases and 320 fatalities the Health Ministry announced yesterday. Ashdod has recorded more cases than previous hotspots in Tel Aviv and Bat Yam combined. “Open border” agreements with countries such as Greece and Cyprus are in place but tourism can only resume with a reduced rate. Israel is set to resume flights next month with 12 countries but that is now in doubt. “With such a high infection rate, Israel can forget about the August 1 resumption,” a Foreign Ministry official said. Israeli tourism suffered a blow this week when the EU announced open borders with 14 countries. This did not include Israel and America due to the deadly virus. The Coronavirus National Information and Knowledge Center called for “proper precautions” to slow down the virus’ morbidity. More hospital wards are opening for coronavirus patients. “The wings are filling up, we’re seeing a

rise in serious condition patients,” said Dr. Erez Onn, from the Health Ministry. Dr Onn said hospitals were prepared for a second wave. Israel’s ministerial committee have backed a Health Ministry recommendation to limit social gatherings to 50 people although cultural events and venues can host up to 250 people with social distancing. A 50-person limit applies to places of worship, circumcisions and funerals. Finance Minister Israel Katz said the decision would mean parents would have to look after children and be absent from work. Katz added that the government should open summer schools to help the situation this week. Deputy Education Minister Meir Porush, meantime, has accused some rabbis of ordering unwell yeshiva students not to get tested to hide true rates in the ultra-Orthodox community. Speaking on ultra-Orthodox radio station, Kol BaRama, Porush described concerns of new restrictions in communities. “Does everyone think it’s their job to get tested when they’re feeling unwell to become just another number? No,” Porush told reporters. “I know there are such
guidelines that say, ‘If you don’t feel well, stay at home, stay in your room.’ “Not everyone is at peace with the things it brings upon us, such as lockdowns.” Porush admitted though that there was a higher awareness of social distancing in orthodox communities. There was also stricter enforcement in wearing face masks in public. In related news, Health Ministry Director-General Prof. Hezi Levi recommended a ban on Israelis meeting elderly relatives, while Health Minister Yuli Edelstein confirmed last Sunday that Israel was at the beginning of a second wave. “After careful consideration and at the advice of professionals we at the Ministry of Health have agreed that we must limit congregation at weddings, in synagogues and celebrations,” Edelstein said. “Universities will have to hold their end of term exams remotely to protect the health of students and their families.”. Edelstein criticised detractors that accused him and colleagues at the ministry of scaremongering. He also slated the media of irresponsible reporting regarding daily confirmed cases. Journalists should use Health Ministry data only, he said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency cabinet meeting after daily diagnoses passed 600 cases for a number of successive days earlier this week. Netanyahu set epidemiologic investigations to no more than 48 hours for Covid-19 tests. Meanwhile, Prof. Eli Wachsman of the Weizmann Institute facilitated medical advice to the National Security Council at the start of the outbreak. Wachsman called on the government to take steps on gatherings in public places to a few dozen people and the transfer of authority regarding the epidemic to an emergency unit within the ministry. Prof. Wachsman blamed a lifting of restrictions early and no proper mechanism to prevent local outbreaks as key in rising cases. “We are far from the target of identifying a patient, or those who were in contact with him, in 48 hours,” he added.
New York wedding tragedy BY ADAM MOSES Esther Deutsch is the fourth victim of a tragic car crash in New Square state, New York earlier this month. Ten people were traveling to a simcha when their 2009 Ford Econoline veered off a road and struck a tree. has hit the community. Rabbi Birnhak’s wife, seriously injured but now recovering, gave birth to a baby boy 24 hours after the crash who was placed in an incubator. The Skverer Rebbe, who joined hundreds of mourners at funerals in New Square, will officiate at a bris in a few weeks. An emergency fund established by the Skverer Kehilla to support the eight surviving Birkhak children, now orphaned, has generated $2.1m towards a target of $2.2m. Initially the target was $400,000.
Hatzolah paramedics arrived at the scene on June 15 where they discovered a number of trapped passengers. Hillcrest and New City Fire Departments assisted in cutting passengers from the van. Injured passengers, some critical, were taken by Hatzolah and Spring Hill Ambulance to Nyack Hospital and Westchester Medical Center. El Al flights cancelled
El Al has cancelled all scheduled flights until further notice. The carrier cited “operational reasons” but spiralling issues with pilots is reportedly the major concern. Passengers on yesterday’s flight to New York will fly with United Airlines from New Jersey today. An impasse with management over pilots flying passenger and cargo flights has developed. El Al warned a further 110 pilots would be placed on unpaid if Wednesday’s flights were cancelled. Pilots were put on unpaid leave three months ago, while monthly salaries have been slashed. Commercial flights have been suspended until the end of this month at least. Foreign travellers cannot enter Israel, residents must self-quarantine for 14 days. El Al’s finances have been severely hit due to the coronavirus pandemic. Discussions over a government loan are ongoing. The government view El Al’s financial woes started before the pandemic. CEO Gonen Usishkin has reportedly ordered passenger and cargo flights to return to Israel.
US official Tel Aviv residence for sale US Ambassador David Friedman’s official residence near Tel Aviv is for sale. The 1.25-acre house has an asking price of around $87 million. The decision follows the US Embassy’s controversial move to Jerusalem in 2018. Israeli business newspaper Globes broke the news earlier this week about the beachfront Herzliya property. Friedman’s daily activities are in Jerusalem, a statement noted. “Following the decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem it made sense to sell the residence in Herzliya,” a spokesman said. “Much of the embassy’s operations have shifted to Jerusalem and the ambassador has established an official residence there.” Trump’s administration moved the US Embassy after recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Friedman played a major role in the move. Most foreign embassies in Israel are in Tel Aviv but the Knesset, Supreme Court, President Reuven Rivlin residence and most ministries are in Jerusalem. Chelsea chairman Roman Abramovich’s home in Herzliya cost an Israeli record $65 million this year. White House officials expect a sale to take place by the New Year.

Tributes to comic legend Carl Reiner
Carl Reiner

BY DAVID SAFFER Comedy legend Carl Reiner passed away at his Beverly Hills home surrounded by his family on Monday. A celebrated writer, comedian, director and actor, Reiner died of natural causes, aged 98. Creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, he appeared in many films including It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming and Ocean’s trilogy. Born in The Bronx, New York City in 1920, Reiner enjoyed a stellar double act with comic genius and lifelong friend Mel Brooks. Working with the crème of comedy writers including Brooks, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart and Woody Allen, his career stretched seven decades. Serving the Army Air Forces in World War Two, Reiner began an acting career by entertaining troops in Hawaii and Guam among other places before his discharge in 1946. Broadway musicals followed before being cast in Sid Ceasor’s Your Show of Shows. Reiner wrote numerous episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show that heralded the
careers of Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. Still in demand into his 90s, voice roles included Carl Reineroceros in Toy Story 4 only last year. An astounding career brought accolades galore including nine Emmy Awards, a Grammy and The Mark Twain Prize for American Humour. Reiner worked with Hollywood greats including George Burns, Steve Martin and George Clooney. Tributes have come from across the entertainment world. “Carl made every room he walked into funnier, smarter, kinder,” said Oceans costar Clooney. “It all seemed so effortless. What an incredible gift he gave us all.” “Goodbye to my greatest mentor in movies and in life,” tweeted Martin. Mash star Alan Alda said, “His talent will live on for a long time, but the loss of his kindness and decency leaves a hole in our hearts.” “Carl was a master of his craft,” tweeted Star Trek star William Shatner. Bette Midler, who starrred in Reiner’s romantic comedy ‘That Old Feeling’ wrote, “I worked with him, loved him and consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world to have once attended lunch with his hilarious, garrulous gang.” Ron Howard said Reiner was a “brilliant comedy talent with heart and intellect whether writing, directing, producing or performing,”. Mia Farrow added, “We lost a person who gave us great times-countless laughs. He was brilliant. And kind. His memory will be a blessing.” Three days before his death, Reiner, a prolific Twitter user, recalled the “best life possible” having married his wife of 64 years Estelle (Stella) Lebost who partnered with him in bringing up their children. Estelle died in 2008. He is survived by author Annie, artist Lucas and actor Rob Reiner. Following his father’s death, Rob, who has directed a number of hit movies including When Harry Met Sally, tweeted, “He was my guiding light”.

RE: OPEN OUR SHULS! Dear Editor, I feel that there needs to be an honest response to last week’s letter from Brian Gordon (18 June) regarding open our Shuls. We know for a fact that opening our schools up fully has not worked and there are reasons for this. We all want to see our schools and shuls reopen as soon as possible but let us think for a minute what we are asking for. Brian Gordon does not mention as soon as we reopen our shuls whether we are 1 or 2 metres away from our nearest neighbour that we won’t even be able to comment on a Rashi or Tosfos to them. With our masks on, we won’t be able to correct possible errors from the leining even if the wrong tense has been put in. We will not be able to communally join in with the singing of any prayers. He has also not mentioned if he wishes to requisition space behind the mechitzah or ladies gallery for the number of men who wish to attend but who will not fit into many synagogues.
We may get simchas back but with the cutting of the number attendees does that mean members of synagogue councils and boards of management not being let in due to lack of space So in effect they become private services for the weekday. Opening shuls up could be a lifeline for the socially isolated but surely they will be quickly dispersed due to security fears by security teams and cst volunteers meaning that shuls reopening for them will not really reduce their isolation. Finally for those wishing to say Kaddishthey are unlikely to get a response as their fellow congregants are unlikely to hear them and reply even with an Amen. For all of these reasons, if we are to embark on a mass letter writing campaign to government think what you will be asking for in our current climate as our religious lives do matter, but we wish to have a quality of religious life which we can sustain for more than the very short term. J Tarlow London N12
RE: OPEN OUR SHULS! Dear Editor, As the bastion publication of Modern Orthodoxy in England, and potentially the only publication in England, truly espousing the views of our congregation, it behoves me to write to you, regarding my concerns. A few culturally Jewish papers ran a piece last week, talking about the chief rabbi’s letter, a couple of weeks ago. He stated that although the government has opened the shuls for private prayer, he is refusing to open the United Synagogue. Though I was unable to find a full copy of the letter, from what was published, I believe an injustice was done to the members of US Shuls. He makes correct reference to the fact that there is little place in Judaism for private prayer specifically in the synagogue, and raises concerns of chillul Hashem and lack of communal prudence regarding making minyanim.

However, he omits the important fact regarding the purpose of our sacred buildings as places of study of the Torah, our foremost religious heritage. There is no consideration at all for the learning of Torah that could be achieved by opening the shuls and their libraries to individual study. He has denigrated our hallowed halls to be mere social clubs wherein we pray communally, and he overlooked the fact that they stand principally as the dwelling place of Hashem and all who seek Him and His law. By not opening the shuls at this time, he has done the US a great disservice, regarding both its image and its congregants. The potential danger of the lack of Torah learning will send a message which will live longer than coronavirus. Adam Cohen
MESSAGE OF SUPPORT FOR JACQUELINE CURZON Dear Editor, Following Jacqueline Curzon’s recent article, I couldn’t help agreeing with her point about inflated prices of PPE items. During the height of the virus it is true that prices for masks, sanitizers and such like were heavily inflated. There simply wasn’t enough stock in the country, due to the speed at which we were swept along by the pandemic. Demand was insane and so prices spiralled from distributor to retailer. Now nearly 3 months later, there is absolutely no reason why prices should be inflated at all. Being a wholesaler and retailer myself, I can confirm that there is plenty of stock and even a saturation of these items. Suppliers are stuck with too much of it, simply because the panic and urgency for these items is no longer there. There is no reason whatsoever why prices can not return to those pre Coronavirus. The Front Line is a great column, Ms Curzon always has her finger on the pulse. Mr A Silber London
ISRAEL AND THE PALESTINIANS GOING FORWARD Dear Editor, I fully agree with the comments in the item, “From the editor’s desk,” in last week’s edition (THE JEWISH WEEKLY, 11 JUNE). Reference to ...”42 members of UK Jewry… reminded me of the name of a famous pop band in the 1980s and 1990s – “LEVEL 42.” This band’s name was a reference to the novel by Douglas Adam called, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” in which it was held that the number 42 is the, “Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.” Seemingly, then, 42 was a perfect number. These 42 high profile people in the Jewish community (backed by many other Jewish people in the UK), seem to ignore, or not want to contemplate, the fact that their perceived drawbacks to this course of action as listed in the front-page item in last week’s edition, “REGEV BLASTS BACK OVER WEST BANK ANNEXATION,” represent the perfect storm that is in the offing whatever Israel does or does not do. Every PIECE of land ceded to the Palestinian leaders, has led to less PEACE and more violence than before. Almost every act by Israel to try and, if not end then at least reduce the likely casualties on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have been met with more hostility on the part of the Palestinian leaders. Israeli government policies and actions, have frequently drawn criticism from Jewish people in the diaspora, that they will fail to head off the oft-repeated perfect storm. The best, if not perfect, basis on which to start off any possible peace deal between the extremist, Muslim leaders of
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
the Palestinian people and the democratically elected government of Israel, is that the former and their financial backers: • Accept the right of Israel to exist as the Jewish Homeland. • Renounce all violence and military action against Israel. • Stop pursuing a “One-State Solution,” which envisages a Muslim only state in the land of Israel and so driving the Jewish people (and other ethnic groups) into the metaphorical sea. This should enable all parties to any peace deal (including Israel’s neighbouring Arab/Muslim Countries) to have chance of agreeing a lasting peace and the security that they seek and deserve. The Palestinians will have cause to hope, and cease to live in fear of Israeli reprisals. This starting point should also presage, (if any is needed), an improvement in the relationship between Israel and the Diaspora Jewry, as Israeli governments can negotiate directly with their counterparts covering all issues, rather than via third parties. The Palestinians are denied the chance of living under any form of peace by their terrorist leaders, (not Israel), who only wish to pursue hatred against Israel and the Jewish people. This must change first. The plight of the Palestinians is largely in the hands of their own political leaders. These 42 people referred to above are of course perfectly entitled to have, and express, their own views. Above are mine, which I also consider, will be at least partly shared by many others. AJEX honours british Jewish servicemen & women in online service of commemoration Last Sunday, AJEX held a remote service of commemoration to honour British Jewish servicemen and women. Over 300 joined the online service and comments flowed in of thanks and remembrance. The ceremony took place to end a memorable week for National Armed Forces Week. This is especially poignant given it is 75 years since the liberation of Bergen Belsen, VE day, VJ day and the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Under normal circumstances, AJEX support National Armed Forces Week with an annual commemoration service at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Sadly, due to Covid-19, this was not possible this year however AJEX were even more determined to gather as a community remotely to ensure the contribution of those who served, was respected even from the comfort of being at home. Many joined The online ceremony included a wreath laying at Bushey War Memorial together with a keynote address from Sir Malcolm Rifkind, AJEX Patron and former Secretary of State for Defence. Other figures included Rabbi (Major) Reuben Livingstone (Jewish Chaplain to HM Forces and Honorary Chaplain to AJEX), Mike Bluestone (AJEX JMA National Chairman), Marie Van der Zyl (President of the Board of Deputies), veteran Ron Shelley and

British society and thanked veterans and AJEX for the support they offer. Rifkind commented, “this year not only marks VE Day but is the 75th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust”. He also touched on the current Covid-19 pandemic, “we
have seen a tremendous community spirit come together in a way we have not seen for a long time”. Those that lived on from the second world war shared with him how the current situation reminded them of the “camaraderie at the times of the Blitz”. Rifkind concluded by saying, “AJEX is not just about the past, the past continues to have an impact on the present and will do for the future. Not only for veterans of today but it will continue for tomorrow veterans too”. AJEX Chairman, Mike Bluestone said, “It is an honour and a privilege to have joined with the community to commemorate all those who fell, whose memories we will always cherish and thank those who served and are currently serving. Remembrance is one of the three core pillars of AJEX welfare, education and remembrance. We look forward to as many people as possible taking part in our forthcoming AJEX Campaign of Remembrance 2020”. The past week AJEX shared a series of fascinating online interviews featuring both veterans and serving personnel. The week’s videos are still available to watch on the AJEX You Tube page. Over 500 households from all over the world connected in support of Chai Cancer Care, the Jewish Community’s dedicated cancer support organisation, at the Chai Manchester ‘The Moment’ Virtual Dinner on Thursday 25th June. Due to Covid-19, the Chai biennial North West Moment Dinner, which was planned to take place in The Hilton, Manchester turned
virtual. The event, broadcast live on YouTube and Facebook, reached an audience far wider than Manchester as viewers tuned in from across the UK, Europe, Israel, America and South Africa. The tone for the evening was set with heartfelt words of welcome from long term supporter Jude Moryoussef, followed by live ‘l’chaims’, as guests watching in Israel, South
Africa and of course Manchester raised a glass in honour of Chai. The highlight of the evening was the performance of ‘Tell me on a Friday’, a recently unearthed work by Jack Rosenthal z”l – written in 2002 and the last he wrote before he died of cancer in 2004. Rosenthal’s wife and honorary Chai patron Maureen Lipman CBE put together an ensemble cast including David Baddiel and Howard Jacobson for an exclusive reading of the emotional piece. Set around a Friday night dinner table, Fabien Frankel played the son who had to tell his family of his cancer diagnosis. In her introduction, Lipman said: “I am very proud to be associated with Chai- a charity like no other.” The evening concluded with a specially commissioned performance of Chai’s unofficial anthem, “To Life” from ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. The song was performed by four of the most famous stars to have played Tevye - Chaim Topol, Dudu Fisher, Andy Nyman and Yehezkel Lazarov. The event raised £120,000 a figure which exceeded expectations. Commenting on this generous response, Louise Hager, Chai Cancer Care chairman, commented, “The loyal support and generosity of this community is so encouraging, especially in this uncertain financial situation.”

How Norwood is bridging the empathy gap Every morning, the American educator and economist George Loewenstein would run up a steep hill and notice the same thing: that on his way up, all he could think about was the pain, and then, once he’d reached the top, that the pain was immediately replaced by a sense of pride and achievement. He developed this observation into what he called his hot-cold empathy gap theory – put simply, the idea that when we are hot we cannot imagine feeling cold, and vice versa. This “empathy gap” is something most of us will be familiar with right now, as restrictions ease for some at the same time as more vulnerable members of society remain shielding at home. And how does Norwood – the UK’s largest Jewish charity for children and families in crisis and adults with learning disabilities and autism – plan to bridge this empathy gap in its own services? The charity knows from the online Q&A sessions it has been conducting on its Children and Family Services Facebook page how the experience of lockdown was markedly different for each family. “What was clear from a session we hosted called ‘Anxiety and the Return to School’,” says Sue Cohen, Norwood’s psychological therapies manager, “is that some children will have experienced lockdown as traumatic – and there’s a lot we know about trauma; how it is held in the body in the form of increased tension and alertness and how those who have experienced trauma need support to help calm and recalibrate their nervous systems. “But for other children it will be quite different – those who perhaps are not so comfortable in school may have experienced this time as a pleasant break, a chance to be at home with their families and get away from the difficulties school presents.” Cohen and her team of child psychotherapists’ plans include partnering with Heads Up Kids and PaJeS (Partnerships for Jewish Schools) to provide a Back 2 School programme offering a framework for schools “to support in order to

reconnect, to rebuild relationships, to share our thoughts and feelings and to make sense of what has happened and where we are now”. The Back 2 School programme is all too aware that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to what might occur over the coming months. “Children’s experiences will vary enormously,” it states at the outset, “but all children will need to process this experience and some will need targeted support.” “The one thing we know for sure,” says Cohen, “is that we will have to be mindful and watchful in the months to come. As the main organisation in the community

with the experience and expertise of delivering therapy to children, we hope to be providing group sessions as soon as that is safely possible,” she says. The gradual easing of restrictions presents an empathy gap of a different kind for the adults Norwood supports. In the charity’s Residential Services, the focus is on prioritising safety while trying to find ways to allow residents to return to what we might call the “new old normal”. “Understandably,” says Norwood’s chief executive Dr Beverley Jacobson, “everyone is ultra-eager to re-enter the world but, while this may be OK for the general public, at Norwood we need to be ever mindful of
the high risk the virus still presents.” For Mikkel Togsverd, Norwood’s director of services and development, a certain amount of caution about returning to normal too quickly is crucial. “We have to say that there has been incredible understanding and restraint shown so far by the families of the people we support,” he says. “We don’t want to be the ‘bad guys’ saying this and that can’t happen, but – although we always ensure that our residential services feel like family homes – the fact is that we run care homes and the risk levels are higher. “We are, though, starting to think now about how best to facilitate empowering the people we support to see their families, because while we are very proud of how our staff have kept people stimulated and in remote contact, we have also found that some people are finding it frustrating and difficult to understand why they have had no contact with their loved ones.” So the next step for Norwood’s Adult Services is to facilitate this on a case-bycase basis. ”We will be working in ways that are both empowering and fun: chalking off areas of the garden and setting up picnic blankets to delineate zones, alongside working with service users to ensure they understand and can uphold the rules for pre-arranged, time-limited visits. But we will only allow these visits when and where we think it’s safe to do so,” says Togsverd. “This crisis has clearly shown us that there are no generalities,” says Sue Cohen. “It’s been a learning experience for all of us at Norwood; we have been pushed to do things differently and have really sharpened our flexible and creative side.” In short, Norwood must balance boldly anticipating what services will be needed next, while still prioritising the safety of all the people the charity supports. And while Norwood might not be quite ready to look out from Loewenstein’s summit just yet, there is hope across the organisation that, with the appropriate planning in place and when the time is right, the return to business as usual will be all downhill.

Daniella Winton visits her Dad, Joseph Winton, 101, at Jewish Care’s Betty and Asher Loftus Centre garden
Joseph Winton, 101 year old resident at Jewish Care’s Lady Sarah Cohen House, was able to see his daughter Daniella, recently in their first socially-distanced visit for three months. After a happy reunion in the garden, Joseph said, “I’m very happy, it was great to see my daughter, it’s always nicer to see someone you love in person rather than through 15km of distance on a screen. We know we’re not the only ones, families
throughout the world can’t see each other as they’d like to. We talked about the usual things, how’s the family, how’s the kids. I’m looking forward to enjoying another visit when that’s possible. And now she will go back home and the kids will say how is grandpa? And she’ll be able to tell them.” We hope that we can facilitate more visits for families and their loved ones soon, as long as it remains safe to do so.

For the second time, over 900 children from Gateshead, Manchester, London and around the UK learned together at a virtual Avos Ubanim in the zchus of those who need a Refuah Shleima. It was an awesome experience to hear the sound of so many children learning, each in their own homes but unified through Torah learning. One of the participants, Rabbi Chayim Venitt, who learned together with his son, Shmuel Simcha, said, ‘Being at home for so long without regular contact with his peers…this enhanced his feeling of identity with them and the Achdus in learning.’ The evening began with a welcome by Rabbi Ephraim Carlebach, one of the organizers. This was followed by fathers and sons learning together. The beautiful sounds of hundreds of fathers and sons learning in this difficult time was incredibly moving and certainly invoked Rachamei Shamayim. We then heard Divrei Chizuk by the famed author and storyteller, Rabbi Yechiel Spira, who captivated the boys with his inspiring words and fascinating stories. Tehilim for the Choilim was led by R’ Dov Seliger, a son of R’ Dani Seliger, one of the Cholim for whom this Avos Ubanim was originally started. He expressed the immense appreciation his family have for the children’s learning and the great value and power of their Tefilos. This was followed by a Mi Sheberach for the Cholim by Avi Yodaiken, one of the organizers. We were lucky enough to finish the program with some songs by famed singer Shloime Dachs. There were 5 winners of the raffle for a drone! The winners were Cheski Litke, Shimmy Erentrau and Yitzy Bloch of Gateshead, Yaakov Ackerman of London and Moishe Schaechter of Manchester. It was a tremendously powerful evening of unity and Torah Learning. Tributes were paid to the organizers Avi Yodaiken, Moishe Levy, Aryeh Spitzer and Rabbi Ephraim Carlebach, the co-sponsors, and all Shuls, schools and Kehilos that partnered together with us.

Chana, the leading UK fertility support organisation for the Jewish community, implores everyone to back its campaign, Worth Every Donation, to help couples take home the greatest gift of all. Mr Benny Grossman, Chair of Trustees, says, “For 27 years we have been supporting those with infertility, but to help couples build their tomorrow, we need to be here today. It would be a huge loss to the community if our diverse range of services could no longer continue.” “Every few months, 20 fertility professionals meet with our team to ensure our clients are getting the most effective possible treatment. Coupled with bespoke counselling, no stone is left unturned on their fertility journey.” The professional relationships Chana has built up over the years means they are up-to-date with all the latest advances in fertility. When seamlessly integrated with Halochic guidance received from Rabbinic Patrons, this puts Chana in a unique position when supporting couples through their treatment choices. These medical partnerships have been essential during the current pandemic. Dr Veronique Berman, Chana’s Scientific Advisor explains: “We’ve worked closely with the HFEA (Human Fertilisation & Embryology
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Authority) to ensure we are kept informed about the latest developments for clinics. Sharing this information with clients has helped couples navigate the path ahead.” Chana’s Honorary Executive Director, Carolyn Cohen adds, “The closure of clinics left many of our clients in crisis, those just about to start treatment; others right in the middle of it and some others newly pregnant after a long journey.” Carolyn adds, “I am so proud of our team, who’ve worked tirelessly, moving all our counselling sessions online, as well as facilitating virtual support groups to make sure no-one feels alone.” Before the pandemic, Chana was preparing for two key, annual fundraising events which had to be cancelled. As Carolyn explains, “To address the increasing needs of our clients, coupled with the loss of all fundraising activities, Chana are launching an appeal, so that with Hashem’s help and His abundant kindness we can be there for those who need us most.” The campaign, Worth Every Donation, goes live on the 12 July at 10 am for 36 hours, during which time everything will be matched. From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON Following on from my comment last week about teachers perceiving the lockdown break as a ‘little bit of a holiday,’ it came as no surprise to read about a headteacher taken to task for criticising some of her staff. Pauline Wood, head teacher at Grange Park Primary School in Sunderland, spoke out on local radio and refused to defend members of her staff sitting at home doing nothing, arguing that teachers are, “paid to work five days a week.” Her governing body disapproved of her public remark and has now suspended her. The problem with the teachers began when she asked them to come in three days a week rather than two, which of course is not unreasonable given the high percentage of underprivileged children who attend the school (40%). She is not some average headteacher, but one who had taken the school from inadequate to outstanding, made it a flagship school during her 15 year tenure, and also transformed it, making it one of the best performing in the country for maths and phonics. Rather than rounding on the headteacher the governors should have defended her, because solid teaching is critical to these children’s education, as well as ensuring value for money for their stakeholders. If they don’t teach, children won’t learn. The governors are lacking in backbone and obviously couldn’t see the WOOD for the reTuRn-EES. (ouch) We need more head teachers like her. Gavin Williamson speaks out again, pledging to get all our children back into the school in September “come what may.” He threw down a gauntlet at the NEU, calling them the No Education Union. Transposition can at times be funny, but sometimes the truth really hurts, doesn’t it? Allies of Sir Keith Starmer, the new labour leader, have been encouraging him to replace Rebecca Long-Bailey, with a more moderate individual who will be prepared to stand up to the teaching unions. She was so vociferous in her support of the NEU that they were effectively weaponised against Boris Johnson. Following that nudge, Sir Keith has just appointed Kate Green as the new Shadow Education Secretary, following Long-Bailey’s sacking. Now that is a good move, if definitely a sharp ‘left’ turn. Staying on education, recent reports shows that for all the countries which have had school closures, the reopening has had little or zero impact, apart from schools in Israel and South Korea. Evidence gleaned from the EU showed 17 countries have already returned, showing no significant increase in covid infections. Most intriguingly the schools in Sweden - which never closed - only had one noticeable outbreak. I completely understand the fear raised by epidemiologists about high school children

My hugest thanks to all the wonderful JW readers who have opened their hearts to supporting me in my battle with cancer. You give me the chizuk to keep going. Onwards! who are approaching adulthood, and who therefore carry more significant risk to others in terms of viral load, but can you imagine the collateral damage if millions of children are kept in a staggered return, perhaps lasting till March, at which stage some children might have been out of education for 12 months?!? I’ve been off my Russian lessons for only 3 months now, and I feel like I’m back in Гимназия {gimnazia} ~ high school. Go on, you try and say it! Whilst I’m on the topic of Russia, a country which has produced some of the finest artists, gymnasts, musicians, poets, scientists [okay, almost everything] in the world, it pains me to mention their president, who is showing again his strong-arm tactics in trying to force a power grab lasting until 2036. His current term of office is due to expire in 2024, but it seems he just doesn’t want to leave. But there is no magic wand, he cannot re-write the rules, as neither can I with my terminal diagnosis. The biggest difference between us - aside for the fact Vladimir is a pensioner - might be that I am less likely to be assassinated. The Russian people have a massive distrust of their president of 20 years, even if he’s fit and a sporting all-rounder, and obviously considers himself the equal of any man. Hang on, wouldn’t he make an excellent ‘bad guy’ in the next James Bond film? We could call him Vlad the Bad. An engineering company which develops unmanned vehicles for the military has been given £50,000 in state funding to explore the
possibility of applying this technology to hospital beds. Digital Concept Engineering (DCE) was awarded the funding after a call from Innovate UK, apparently motivated by reports of porters falling ill after moving beds with coronavirus patients. If, as we hope, coronavirus will take its leave in the not-too-distant future, one wonders if this is a development too far. It would bring a new take on the expression, he’s off (on) his trolley. The mind boggles… Can you really see this catching on? Patients still hoping to get an urgent dental appointment are likely to face extra charges of up to £35, to cover the cost of mandatory PPE. This ties in with my observation recently that dentists felt that they were having to pay up to 600 times the regular price for PPE. This additional charge will only affect private appointments, as the NHS sector charges should remain price protected. Pharmacies are back in the news once more [Telegraph, 30th June], being warned by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), and the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPA) for profiteering. Those investigated for inflating prices of masks and hand sanitiser should expect the public to report them, and to face a fine. In an open letter to pharmacies, the watchdogs jointly wrote, “we have received reports that a small number of pharmacies are seeking to benefit from the pandemic by charging unjustifiably high prices for essential products.” A spokesman for the National Pharmacy Association, the trade body replied, “unjustifiable pricing in a minority of pharmacies risks obscuring the heroic efforts of pharmacies across the land.” I want to stress that not all pharmacies are guilty of this, but those that are cannot rely on customer goodwill going forwards. At the apex of culpability are the wholesalers who have stockpiled the products and materials, causing a bottleneck in distribution and a spiral in prices. We are completely empathetic with small businesses who are under pressure to survive. If you keep prices fair, you keep your loyal customers. I mentioned some time back, that there was evidence to support a theory that Coronavirus may have escaped China much earlier than was declared. In this week’s broadsheets, researchers in Barcelona say they have detected the presence of the virus in a wastewater sample collected from March 2019. If confirmed, it makes for some very uncomfortable, if perhaps entertaining conversations between Mr Trump and President Xi, because unlike the governors mentioned earlier, Trump is not afraid to tackle difficult topics in the world classroom. It is alarming to hear that Leicester has just had a resurgence of the virus, and consequently had regional lockdown imposed. Professor Carl Heneghan, from Oxford University’s Centre for Evidence Based Medicine, said this is totally unnecessary,
and implementing ‘track and trace’ would have been sufficient. This move by the Government has required local schools to revert to taking keyworker children only, and shops once again to close. Around 50% of London boroughs have also seen a flurry of spiking numbers, but these are fluctuating, so I hope it doesn’t set a precedent to deal heavy-handedly with every mini spike in the country. Testing has been the key issue, has been pressed for relentlessly, but there has not been enough of it. It would be horrific to steadily creep back to a national lockdown, and for those who have ‘shielded’ for 12 weeks, it is incomprehensible to start the clock all over again. Data reveals shielding has been shown to affect the mental health of women far more than men, especially in the 50+ age group. Men however are more susceptible to catching the virus. Now that’s rather an anomaly. It is not surprising then, that Nicola Sturgeon has now mooted putting English visitors into quarantine, should (our) cases south of the border continue to rise. Professor Devi Sridhar, the University of Edinburgh’s public health advisor, is part of Ms Sturgeon’s Covid advisory team, and has voiced his concerns over ‘imported cases of the virus.’ Hold it, right there. Given our international airports remained open for months, is it any wonder the UK also had ‘imported cases’ of covid? Sridhar added it would be ‘straightforward for Scotland to become Covid-free if it was an island, like New Zealand.’ Hate to break it to you guys, but the UK IS an island. I’m therefore going to propose we let the genie out of the bottle, snap Scotland off at Gretna Green, and drag it out to the Diomede Islands, off Siberia. As they have so much in common - unrelenting leadership, complex politics, heavy dialects, not sure about the whisky - aside from their inclement weather, I’m sure they would have no trouble adapting. And, as I’m Scottish by birth, like Mr Connery, I can assure you how easy t’will be to pick up a decent Russian accent. In the interim I’d better get my skates on, if I’m to get a quick trip up to Bonny Scotland, before needing my corona passport. Edgware super-heroine Sarah Shiller has now celebrated her 80th birthday and has asked me to thank all the wonderful people in the extended community who sponsored her. With a spring in her step and song in her heart, she completed her 100-mile walk. JAMI will now benefit to the magical tune of over £4000 as a result. Kol ha’kovod, Sarah. We’ll see you next year p”G. Finally, three cheers for Tommy Hudgell (5), a double amputee from West Malling in Kent who has raised more than £1 million for charity, by walking 10 km in June. The ‘Fakeaway’ BY DENISE PHILLIPS The new buzzword in home dining is a 'fakeaway' which is a homemade meal intended to replicate takeaway food ordered from a restaurant. Covid has changed what we want for family dining. Working from home and children at home mean that breakfast, lunch, and dinner 7 days a week requires creativity combined with minimal effort! Families are looking for a tasty home experience to create a fun and delicious dinner in! Shepherd’s pie on Mondays, salmon fillet on Tuesdays and chilli on Wednesdays is just NOT going to encourage families to feel excited about what they are eating. Something ‘new’ or ‘different’ makes a happy difference. Healthy options are a must as we all strive to keep well and not put on weight. Restaurants will soon begin to open but many people are still quite cautious to venture out to busy public places. The fakeaway gives you the opportunity to be adventurous with your genre of cuisine and you can mix nationalities together like Thai, Japanese, Malaysian and enjoy ‘A taste of the East’!
SUGGESTIONS FOR RECIPES AND CUISINES INCLUDE:
• Korean/ Japanese - ramen with udon noodles and Tofu which is one of my favourites • Tex Mex night - enjoy your tacos, nachos, chillies, guacamole and fajitas • Chinese - stir fries, sizzling chicken with cashew nuts, duck with pancakes, shredded crispy beef, spring rolls and egg fried rice and vegetarian Singapore noodles.
Networking Events for Jewish Singles
• Burger Night - make it fish, beef or veggie authentic with a burger bun, toppings and salad • Indian Curries - just using coconut milk, curry powder, onions, garlic, cardamom, cumin, coriander, and chilli - you can make a very tasty curry in a hurry! Sri Lankan fish curry.
THERE ARE NUMEROUS ADVANTAGES TO ‘FAKEAWAYS’ INCLUDING:-
• Healthier - you can control the fat, salt, sugar and include more natural ingredients rather than an excess of preservatives. • Taste Better - with a good recipe, they can taste better. Many takeaways arrive late and cold! • Portion Size - by making your own meal it is easier to control the portion size. The more food we have in front of us, the more likely we are to eat it. • Better For the Environment - Like all food, greenhouse gases are created as a result of producing packaging, transporting and storing the food. But with takeaways there are additional environmental costs – as the food is then repacked often in plastic rather than going straight onto plates • Cheaper - takeaways can be expensive • Quicker - Opting for a takeaway might seem the ultimate time saver but, in most cases, you can put together your own fakeaway in less time than it takes to order and wait for the delivery. • Help Fridge Management - use up left over jars of sauces, fresh vegetables, and other store cupboard ingredients.

Motoring: Nissan Qashqai Tekna Travel is returning and MALCOLM GINSBERG will have an update in a few weeks time. The gates have opened but not the floodgates, which is needed, and this includes Israel. In the meantime the new monthly car reviews continue. Malcolm is a member of the Guild of Motoring Writers.

Nissan Qashqai Tekna Seats
The subject of this Jewish Weekly road test is Europe’s best-selling crossover, or mini-SUV. In fact, the term MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) seems to be creeping in, perhaps a better description. The Qashqai has a mildly-elevated driving position which can make you feel slightly superior to other road users, and it allows for fine all-round visibility. Some may say it follows the trends with regards to looks, which is probably true. It does its job very well with a range of models covering all requirements and pockets. Our Tekna, a near top-of-therange model, came as standard with a very full range of convenience extras with perhaps the electric parking brake the most useful once we became used to it and all-round camera positions linked to an auto parking system. The Qashqai is a British success story as well as being a Japanese car. It is the first model to be styled by Nissan Design Europe in London, with engineering development led by Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. First unveiled as a concept vehicle at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show, it was globally presented at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. In September 2015, Nissan rolled a record-breaking 500,000th Qashqai off the production line at NMMUK, the fastest time for a vehicle built in the UK to reach a half million units. By the start of 2018, 3m had been built.
In terms of size, its 169.7in length and 63.4in height places it into a crowded market place that includes the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander. The Tekna cannot be described as sporting, with plenty of body lean in bends and a notchy six-speed gearbox, but its 0-60 time of 8.9sec is excellent powered by Nissan’s new 1.3 DIG-T 160mps petrol engine. Nothing special with consumption at 40-plus to the gallon and the mid-range

road test car came with 19in wheels, making it ideal to tackle the local council road humps that are springing up more and more. Do they work, increasing fuel emissions and general inconvenience, or should drivers be trusted to keep to the speed limits? Our test car offered an electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, heated, as was the similarly-comfortable companion’s couch, with a panoramic glass roof as an extra plus one-touch electric blind. The technical control, if that is the right description, comes through Nissan’s Connect system, which is operated via a 7in touchscreen at the centre of the dashboard. It also includes a DAB radio and adds a host of additional features, including sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, plus 3D mapping. You can also download an app to your

phone adding remote services, such as to find your car (if you’ve forgotten where it’s parked) and to send destinations to the sat-nav. With this, you can plan a trip, sending your destination to the car via what is called “Door to Door Navigation” before setting out. Route guidance begins as soon as you start the vehicle. There is plenty of storage space in the cockpit for most reasonably-sized items including water bottles. The Qashqai’s rear seats are reasonably roomy by family SUV standards, with lots of headroom and a fair amount of knee room. In both respects, the Qashqai is roughly on a par with the Skoda Karoq and two grown-ups will be comfortable in the back on longer trips, although anybody taller than 6ft will probably find knees brushing the seat in front if it is pushed back. The rear seats fold down in a 60/40 split. You don’t get an electric button to raise the rear door on the Tekna. The boot has enough room for the weekly shopping or a couple of sets of golf clubs. It has a false boot floor which is useful for extra storage or hiding things away. in several ways. All in all, the Qashqai is a fine all-round package and that is why it sells so well. The bottom-of-the-range Visia (£20,195) only lacks the Connect system, but the next one up, called Premium (£23,100), has a series of driver’s aids and might be the one to go for depending on your budget. The Tekna+ (£29,425) includes the sunroof as standard, fancy body trimmings and also a four-way electric driver’s seat lumbar adjustment. Our Tekna 1.3 on the road was priced at £28,445 including the £450 sunroof. We reckon it good value and clearly is attracting buyers from around the world. It is a fine family workhorse. https://uk.nissannews.com/en-GB/ releases/release-e6cf96a1853ac499ed1edfb2d700a910-upgraded-nissan-qashqai-diesel-range-delivers-more-power-more-performance-lower-emissions#

ASK THE RABBI
Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com SHOULD WE HAVE SHUT SHULS?
Dear Rabbi Was it really right to close Shuls during the pandemic and to continue restricting numbers now, even as the Shuls will be opening up again? Surely prayer is what we need more than anything for our added protection. Shaul Dear Shaul Prayer is an essential component of Jewish life. The Hebrew for prayer is “tefilah” which also means attachment, and it is indeed through prayer that we connect with above. Of course that helps to safeguard us in all sorts of circumstances. But, the imperative to protect life overrides all. And when the two coincide, it is perfectly possible to maintain both, bearing in mind that G-d hears and listens to all prayers, whether public or private. In fact you would have to ask yourself, “Is prayer accepted when it is conducted in a forbidden framework?” In other words, just as one would appreciate that praying in a bathroom would be wholly absurd, so too, praying in a setting that constitutes a threat to one’s well-being (which, as Halacha itself insists, must be determined by professional doctors, not rabbis), should fall into the same category. Rabbi Moshe Isereles (who is our primary Halachic codifier otherwise known as the Rama) ruled that when there is an epidemic (let alone a pandemic) one should leave the city and stay
somewhere in the countryside where there are far fewer people. He found himself doing exactly that at one point – and it can be safely assumed there was no minyan there. Rabbi Akiva Eger famously ruled during a cholera outbreak in 1831, that no shul should have more than 15 people at any one time during the service. He suggests organising a staggered prayer schedule for the daily prayers, to allow as many people as possible to participate. And get this: He adds that they should turn to the police or retain a synagogue security guard in order to limit crowd size and enforce regulations, if need be. I think that says more than the many “holy Jews” today who just feel they know better.
IS BOXING KOSHER?
Dear Rabbi What is the Jewish perspective on boxing? My son wants to join a boxing club but my thinking suggests that it is wrong as it is a violent sport and can cause real physical damage. Please enlighten me as he has agreed to abide by your decision. Malcolm Dear Malcolm You want the good news or the bad news? Rabbi Yechezkal Landau (1713-1793) discusses the Jewish perspective on hunting: “Somebody who is poor and needs to hunt for his livelihood is permitted by the Torah to do so, just as merchants who travel the seas. Whatever a person needs
Tehillim Psalm 148
This week’s psalm brings us within touching distance of the end of Tehillim. It is one of the most all encompassing psalms in the whole book of Tehillim, as we praise Hashem for his brilliant creations in both the heavens and the earth.’ As put so eloquently by Rabbi Nosson Scherman and Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz in the Artscroll, ‘all of nature - celestial and terrestrial - join together in a symphony of joyous song to Hashem.’ ‘Hallelukah, Hallelu et Hashem min Hashamayim, halleluju bamromim - Praise Hashem from the Heavens, praise Him in the heights. Up in heavens, all the spiritual beings clearly recognize the brilliance of Hashem’s works, and G-d is constantly praised on High. All the angels praise Him, together with the sun, the moon and the stars. G-d established a decree that
to do for his livelihood must be permitted, as the Torah says, ‘… and he risked his life for it..’.. But somebody whose intent is not for purposes of sustenance, but simply wants to satisfy the whims of his heart by going where wild animals lurk, and thus endangers himself, transgresses the verse: ‘And you shall guard yourselves very well.’” From this it is clear that there are dangerous activities that may ordinarily be prohibited, but for financial considerations one may be permitted to do them. So, as your son is not dependent on this for financial reasons, one might argue against. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein writes that he was asked whether it is permissible to play professional ball despite the danger of getting hurt. He writes: “It is permitted to engage in a livelihood even if it involves a slight risk. Also, it should be permitted when there is a remote danger of killing others, for what is the difference between the prohibition against killing others and the prohibition against killing oneself? For the sake of livelihood one is allowed to take a risk when the chances are minimal.” Of course that begs the question, where does one draw the line? Who decides what “acceptable danger” is? Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach writes that, in general, we look to the public to determine whether something is considered too dangerous. Is it something they run from or embrace? Since contact sports are generally not
something people avoid, one could argue that neither should Halacha view them as dangerous. Boxing is arguably not something that people run from either. While more people are inclined to play rugby than go six rounds in the ring, I would argue that it is also a means of staying healthy, building self-esteem,

the sun and moon will shine forever in their set roles, and it cannot be changed. The very loftiest of heavens praise Him, together with the waters above the heavens. These waters were mentioned in the very beginning of the Torah in Parashat Bereishit, thousands of years before scientists ‘discovered’ that there are vast quantities of ice in various planets. The sages of the Talmud discussed this fact too, years after King David made mention here in this psalm. So once again we clearly see how the wisdom and genius of the Torah far outweighs science, which changes frequently to suit the era anyway, so can hardly be trusted too much. King David then brilliantly contrasts the upper unseen worlds with the majestic beauty
of what happens down below here in this world. Praise Him all the earth, giant sea monsters and all the infinite creatures in the watery depths. The mountains, hills, trees, beasts and cattle all get a mention too. Birds and insects don’t miss out. And then we arrive at mankind, kings, princes, judges, young men and maidens. When a person thinks about just how much Hashem has created and constantly looks after each day, one can only be filled with tremendous awe, and truly turn to praise Him. May we all praise Hashem like we are supposed to and we will feel better about it too. To sponsor a Tehillim for £36 call 0203 906 8488 or email office@thejewishweekly.com

A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE
Spiritual Transformation RABBI GOODMAN In case thousands of years of anti-Semitism have not made it clear, Jews and non-Jews are different. The precise difference has been the subject of much debate and generally depends on which way the wind is blowing. However, from a Jewish perspective, there is no ambiguity; the difference is clear and to the point: we have the Torah. The Torah is much more than a “Code of Law” or “Guide to Life” that keeps us on the right track. It is the heart and soul of the Jewish people. In this week’s Parsha, Rabbi Chaim Ibn Attar (1696-1743,) otherwise known as the Ohr HaChaim, provides an incredible insight into the Torah’s impact on the Jewish Nation. The first twenty-two verses of the Parsha deal with the laws of impurity that accompany death and the laws of the Red Heifer . Curiously, points out the Ohr HaChaim, in its introductory remarks to these laws the Torah declares in a broader sense: “This is the decree of the Torah,” as
opposed to stating more specifically, “This is the decree of impurity,” or “This is the decree of purification.” To explain this aberration, the Ohr HaChaim quotes the Rambam who rules that a non-Jewish corpse does not contract impurity. Accordingly, a Jew who encounters a deceased gentile does not require a subsequent process of purification. The Ohr HaChaim says that the verse, “This is the decree of the Torah,” is not merely a statement of fact, but rather it addresses the underlying reason for the Rambam’s ruling and should be understood as follows: “This decree of impurity and its process of purification are the result of the Torah.” The reason why only a Jewish corpse contracts impurity, as opposed to a non-Jewish corpse, is because of the Torah. The Ohr HaChaim explains that in the same way honey attracts flies, holiness attracts impurity. Har Sinai and the giving of the Torah was not a book launch. Rather, it was the spiritual transformation of an entire Nation. The Torah seared
an awesome degree of holiness into our souls that changed us forever. Once we received the Torah and underwent spiritual metamorphosis, we became a magnet for the forces of impurity. Therefore, only when a Jewish person’s holy soul leaves its body are there remnants of holiness left behind which attract the forces of impurity. Understanding the nature of the Torah and its effect on the Jewish people is so important. Torah learning is not an academic pursuit and Torah observance is not a lifestyle. Rather, Torah learning and Mitzvah observance are spiritual enterprises which infuse our souls and lives with breathtaking holiness. This holiness, in turn, draws us closer to Hashem and the fulfillment of the purpose for which we were created.

Should We Be Tearing Down Statues? A Torah Perspective BY RABBI DOVIE SCHOCHET In the past few weeks, news of numerous statues and flags being torn or taken down has made headlines. Debates rage across the nation as to where do we draw the line. Should we take down statues and monuments of the confederates? If yes, what about statues of Winston Churchill or Woodrow Wilson? What do we do with the Colosseum or Auschwitz? In times like these, we look to our Torah for guidance and insight.1
THE RIGHTEOUS PROSPER AND THE WICKED ROT
In the book of Mishlei it states: “The name of the righteous is invoked in blessing, but the fame of the wicked rots.”2 This verse teaches that the name and actions of holy and righteous men are to be remembered whereas those of the wicked are to be forgotten and eradicated from our memories. It is for this precise reason whereupon reading Haman’s name in the Megillah many have the custom to bang and shout.3 Yet, ironically, despite the teaching of this verse, there are two famous exceptions when we not only remember wicked people but we place them on a pedestal: Korach and Balak.4 Korach and Balak were both
infamously known for their gross misdeeds. Korach for leading a rebellion against Hashem, Moshe and Aharon5 and Balak for wanting to annihilate the Jewish people.6 Nevertheless, these two people received the best “monument” of all – a title of a Parasha.7 Not only does this call for their names to be remembered for eternity (as the Torah itself is eternal), but seemingly also honours them in a way where only a select few righteous people were deserving.8 How can this be the case? The truth of the matter is, notwithstanding the wickedness of Korach and Balak, there is a fundamental lesson that we can learn specifically from them both that can enhance our service of Hashem and better us as people.
KORACH – BURNING WITH DESIRE9
Korach challenged Aharon for the priesthood. He so wanted to become the High Priest that he was willing to start a rebellion to accomplish his goal. To be clear, what Korach did was wrong, his intentions and desires on the other hand are something to be admired. Korach wished to reach that same divine experience as Aharon did. He desired to be spiritually uplifted and attached to Hashem the same way Aharon was. This is something that we must all learn from
Korach. Hashem declared the Jewish people as a “kingdom of priests”10. We all have the ability to strive for greatness and aim to have the same spiritual experience as Aharon. Korach teaches us that in order to do this we must desire it, we must truly want it, up to the point where we are willing to go to great lengths to refine ourselves in order to attach ourselves to the Divine [albeit in a way (unlike Korach) that does not contradict Torah].
I believe that every statue and monument needs to be looked at in an honest and objective way based on its own merits. We need to determine when we look at a statue, is it giving over a message of hope or destruction. Will preserving this statue be detrimental or better us as a society. Will it keep us in the dark or bring a little light to our world. Only then can we decide and move towards healing fractured world.
BALAK – BITTER SWEET11
1 For the Torah is the blueprint of our world. Bereishis Rabbah 1:1
Balak himself was an evil man. He wished to wage war against the Jewish people and to wipe them from existence. Nevertheless, it was from Balak that Rus descended, who in turn was the ancestor of King David, who will give rise to the Moshiach. While the reason why Hashem orchestrated for the Redeemer of the Jewish people to be a descendant from a man like Balak is beyond the scope of this article, we can nevertheless learn from here a profound insight into serving Hashem. The goal of this world is to take the physical and to transform it into a conduit for the Divine. To reveal and draw out that G-dly spark hidden in the deep recesses of this exile. To transform a Balak into sparks of salvation.

Para adumah, democracy and worshipping human constitutions BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN There are very few commandments as evocative as parah adumah- the ceremony of the red hefer. This sacrifice is processed and burnt outside the Mikdash, while its ashes are mixed with spring water and sprayed upon someone who has come into contact with the dead. This extraordinary but inexplicable mitzvah is introduced as the prototypical “chok”: Zot chukat haTorah. Traditionally, the term “chok” designates illogical mitzvoth. Many mitzvoth can easily be decoded but some lie beyond the realm of human comprehension; their logic defies human interpretation. Parah adumah is a double ‘chok’ because it is not just illogical – it is also internally contradictory. The priests who officiate over this ceremony which relieves halachik impurity, are, themselves, rendered impure. The logic of this mitzvah is both impenetrable and, seemingly, inconsistent- at least if judged through human analysis. It is for this reason that para adumah is coined the ultimate ‘chok’. Death is the ultimate mystery for which human beings possess no solution and little understanding. When we encounter the mystery of death, we require a Divinely coded experience – beyond human ration and beyond human cognition- to resolve our “predicament” and redeem us. Para adumah is the perfect illustration of the experience of illogical religion. This model “chok” highlights that even ‘logical’ mitzvot contain deeper levels of meaning far beyond human logic. Many Rishonim- most notably the Rambamassembled ‘reasons’ for miztvot- known as ta’amei ha’mitzvoth. Amongst those who opposed this agenda, some were concerned that mistaken reasons would be asserted, causing the abandonment of mitzvoth. However, some were opposed to the very concept of binding a mitzvah to human-based logic or comprehensible reasons. Mitzvoth are all Divine commands and they all possess layers of meaning far beyond human consideration. Offering logical reasons for mitzvoth may “flatten” mitzvoth which are, in truth, celestial and otherworldly. An additional but lesser known meaning of the term “chok” is a law which is “foundational” or “seminal”. For example, the korban Pesach is referred to as “zot chukat haPesach” even though the ceremony is completely logical, as it commemorates our emancipation from Egypt and our genesis as a nation. Pesach is a “chok” not because it is a mystery but because it is seminal to Jewish identity. The label “chok” sometimes denotes that a mitzvah
is part of the “constitution” of Judaism and not ‘merely’ one of 613 miztvoth. In fact, in modern Hebew, the word ‘chukah’ - a derivative of the term “chok” - refers to an actual political Constitution (which the State of Israel has yet to craft!) These two meanings of the term “chok” – seemingly “illogical” mitzvoth as well as “foundational” mitzvoth are interrelated. Human logic is always temporary and fluctuates with the changing circumstances of history. Divine logic extends beyond time and space and is therefore both incomprehensible to humans as well as immutable to the changes of history. Since only Divine logic is perpetual, only G-d can install absolute and unchanging rules which apply regardless of changing circumstances. Only G-d can create permanent Constitutions which outlast changing cultures and contexts. Human logic is trapped within a “period” or a “place” and their laws are never unalterable and can never form an absolute Constitution. As G-d soars above time and place, His logic is impenetrable but also enduring. Ultimately His will is enduring and absolute for precisely the same reason that it is unfathomable!! This week the greatest modern democracy celebrates its Independence Day. Democracy has reshaped the human condition, alleviating centuries of unjust political rule, thereby freeing humans from political persecution and unleashing human imagination and creativity. Democracy, and its economic cousin, Capitalism have, together, propelled 300 years of unparalleled human welfare. We believe that G-d desires human welfare and therefore we celebrate the advent of democracy- imperfect, but yet, the best political system which humans have been able to install. However, blindly worshipping democracy without acknowledging its religious danger is a modern form of idolatry. After the American Revolution a Constitution was absolutely vital toward the founding of the modern political experiment of Democracy; it provided a baseline upon which to build a fair and just democratic system. However, the Constitution was drafted in a particular context and in response to specific historical factors. Assuming that its authority is unchangeable traps us in mind prisons of outdated paradigms. For example, the right to bear arms, enshrined in the Second Amendment, was intended to protect against the aggression of a foreign empire. Today, it is unlikely that handheld guns could be of much use in actual warfare; widespread handgun ownership serves only one purpose- the murder of fellow
… blindly worshipping democracy without acknowledging its religious danger is a modern form of idolatry. citizens. Yet some still obstinately cling to their “right to bear arms” claiming their sacred freedoms as protected by the Bill of Rights. This modern form of idol worship – blindly worshipping human Commandments- carries a grave price tag in human blood. The worshippers of the Second Amendment are modern worshippers of “Molech”- their worship spills the blood of children in schools across the country. Likewise, it has been scientifically proven that face masks dramatically diminish the risk of Covid-19 infection. It is sad to witness reckless people who refuse to wear masks. Some are just lazy or inconsiderate, but others defend their behaviour based on their Constitutional right to freedom of expression. This application warps the Constitution, is historical folly as well as a moral breakdown. Freedom of expression was intended to allow free speech and to enable the exchange of ideas, views and political positions- all of which are vital to vibrant democracies. The digital revolution has reminded us of the power of speech and information. Applying freedom of expression to the avoidance of face masks and the endangerment of life is reckless and intellectually dishonest. Weaponizing freedom of expression at the risk to human life is a modern form of idolatry: it assumes that humans can craft timeless principles which are so seminal that they can even over tally the preservation of human life. Much controversy has erupted over
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
the past few weeks surrounding statues which are associated with unfair social institutions which, in the past, supported racial injustice. Abraham Lincoln was a great opponent of slavery and the Lincoln Monument is therefore acceptable to the consensus. Indeed, the towering man sitting courageously on his “throne of law” is one of the most iconic American symbols. As a Jew, I find the notion of any human sitting upon a mighty throne- even a throne of law- to be abrasive. Only G-d sits atop His Throne of Glory, hovering above human experience and delivering immutable laws which shape and govern human experience in each century. Humans can, and should, draft laws, but they cannot issue Constitutions which are taken as absolute and immutable. Only G-d can issue timeless commandments which are so sweeping that they must be applied unconditionally. The world of “chok” is the unique province of G-d. At Sinai G-d issued ten eternal Commandments. The founding fathers of the USA registered ten Amendments in the original Bill of Rights, which are important “guidelines” for democracy but are not absolute Commandments. We await the arrival of Moshiach and the processing of the tenth para adumah in history !! Rabbi Moshe Taragin has taught at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion, for the past 22 years.

Chukat / Balak RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE
BALAK & HIS FRIEND BILAM
Midrashic literature has much to say (mostly negative) about Balak the king of Moab. Balak was not the son of a king but gained the throne in a coup. This had been prophesied by Bilam whom Balak offered to reward with money and status because he knew that Bilam – though a prophet – was a greedy materialist. Balak himself was not such a nice character. According to the sages, he was the kind of person who promises much but does little. The opposite is found in the righteous such as Abraham, who promise less but do more. Balak gained his people’s support because they expected great things from him but became thoroughly disillusioned. Balak was so hostile to Israel that he gave his own daughter as a seductive trap to entangle some of the Israelite people.
feature is not so much the ambience as the content of the worship service. In my early days in the pulpit I was close to a synagogue warden from the Continent who had settled in London and developed an admiration for the plaques affixed to countless buildings to record which famous person used to live there. He told me that he thought our synagogue ought to have a plaque that read, “This is the dwelling place of G-d”. I realised how moved he was by the probably indefinable air of that synagogue, but I also realised that more or less every synagogue could be described that way, and that more important than calling a synagogue a House of G-d was to make every part of the world a Divine dwelling place. Hence whenever I echo the “Mah Tovu” verses I apply the praise of the place of worship to every nook and cranny of Creation.
A TASK FOR ALL THE FAMILY
Three siblings, Aaron, Miriam and Moses:
all different personalities, but all important in the government of the people. Like all good leadership teams, they each had their own area of responsibility, and the community needed them all. According to a Talmudic tradition, Moses, like the shepherd that he once was, saw to the morale and spirit of the whole people. Thanks to him Israel received the manna and did not go hungry. Aaron, the man of peace who loved peace and pursued it, maintained the harmony and unity of the tribes and their members. Because of him the Israelites were surrounded by protective clouds of glory. Miriam, who had begun her career watching over her baby brother, was the one who concerned herself with the most fragile members of society. Because of her the people had water and were fed. Only when Miriam and Aaron died did the people encounter serious crises. The water dried up. The Canaanites attacked. The sages say that Moses recognised what had happened, so he reorganised his own priorities to ensure that the void left by the passing of his brother and sister could be filled. It is a touching depiction of the value of

Synagogue procedure expands Bilam’s “Mah Tovu” with extra verses in praise of the Jewish place of worship. The verses include one that says, “I love the habitation of Your House, the place where Your glory dwells” (Psalm 26:8). What inspires this sentiment – the architecture, the singing, the words, the congregants? All are part of the answer, but the chief

Ramchal now explains how a humble person conducts themselves. We mentioned the categories of behaviour by which a humble person will be recognised. Each of these categories is now explained by Ramchal. The first one was “conducting oneself in a humble manner”.
for an example of how a servant of Hashem paces themselves.)
1 Speech. A modest person speaks softly. Ramban famously wrote to his son that he should talk gently at “all times” which means even when challenged by others or at stressful times.
3 Where a person seats themselves. A humble person does not rush to the most prominent seat in a gathering. Similarly, if their fixed place is occupied in shul, for example, would they agree to sit in a “less important” place? Ramchal quotes King Solomon in Mishlei who wrote that a person should not sit “in the place of those held in high esteem” and the teaching of our Sages in the Midrash that a person should “distance themselves two or three places from where they may have felt they belong”.
2 How one walks. The Talmud teaches that one should not walk in an arrogant, upright posture. Likewise, it appears to have been the manner of arrogant people to walk exceptionally slowly at times. This too, is not appropriate for the humble person. (See the famous video of the Chofetz Chaim walking into a Rabbinic gathering
A person who conducts themselves in a way that draws less admiration to themselves is assured by out sages that they will enjoy high regard in the World to Come. The most famous example of humility that led to respect is Mount Sinai, that Hashem chose this humble mountain to be the place of Mattan Torah specifically due to its humble attitude.
THIS DIVIDES INTO SUB-CATEGORIES:
the whole family, and a tribute to the instinct and ability of Moses to know what the moment required. From it we can learn how much is achieved by a family that works as a team. The lesson applies to any family, not excluding that of a rabbi. It’s not easy to be a rabbi’s wife or a PK – a preacher’s kid. It is tempting for the family to say, “It’s not our job to be the rabbi!” – but that’s much too easy. The whole rabbinical family has to be involved, even though the community probably only pays a salary to one member, the rabbi himself. Hilchot Shabbat
Mesillat Yesharim: Part 43 RABBI MORDECHAI ULLMAN
2 JULY 2020
As we have previously explained, the use of baby wipes on Shabbat may well involve the prohibition of Sechita, which falls under the category of Dash (according to many authorities). Rav Asher Weiss holds that the wipes are permissible for use and his reasoning is this: The wipes are manufactured for ease of use in a way that ensures that the moisture mostly remains on its surface and will not need any pressure applied in order to clean the baby. Although folding and intentionally squeezing wipes will involve an act of Sechita, with normal use such as when cleaning a baby, one does not intend to squeeze and any pressure placed by the carer on the baby is not in order to release more liquid; rather it is to remove dirt. We would therefore not apply the laws of “Pesik Reisha” (meaning that one cannot say it is inevitable that moisture will be released). In the opinion of Rav Weiss, any scientific tests that are done to “prove” that water is released with their use are not relevant; instead, we consider how people generally use them. However, he reiterates that intentional squeezing either in the air or on a person (or indeed any surface) is forbidden. However, Rabbi Falk held that the wipes are manufactured with a very significant amount of moisture absorbed, which is designed to be released in order to break
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
down the dirt and ease the process of cleaning. So, using wipes often involves intentional squeezing. Even if one was to argue that they personally don’t squeeze as the wipes are very wet, the moisture is entirely absorbed in the wipe so is certainly squeezed even if only slightly. It is likewise incorrect to argue that if most of the wipe material is not paper but nylon then it would be permitted (due to it being a material that does not grow naturally), as it would remain a Rabbinic prohibition. Although Torah giants such as Rav Ovadia Yosef held like Rav Weiss, the majority of world-renowned Halachic authorities (many more than have been named here) hold wipes to be forbidden for use on Shabbat. In conclusion, in order to avoid involving oneself in a potential Torah prohibition of Sechita, if the use of lotion is not an option, one must consult a competent Halachic authority.

Chukat Balak
Chukat Balak Word Search
This week we are in for two exciting Parshiot Chukat and Balak. Parshat Chukat tells the story of the Jewish people thirsting for water. Their faithful shepherd Moshe ends up losing his chance of going into our beloved land Eretz Yisroel when he hits the rock instead of talking to it. Aaron his brother is also prevented from going into the holy land; he dies in this week’s Parsha and his son Elazer takes over his role. Towards the end of the Parsha the Jewish people miraculously win two mighty kings – Sichon and Og. Hearing of this miraculous defeat, Balak, king of Moav is terrified of the Jewish people. He therefore pays a Midianite prophet to curse the Jewish
people. Bilam mounts his donkey all enthusiastically, but the journey towards Moav goes hopelessly wrong. His donkey takes him to the sides of the road and refuses to budge. After hitting the donkey three times the donkey begins to talk! Eventually Bilam arrives to a good view of the Jewish camp and begins to speak. But… Hashem has other plans and all Bilam manages to mouth is blessings and good prophecies for the Jewish people. Finally, the Midianites and Moabites plot a better plan to harm their enemy – get them to sin. Sadly, as a result of this, a plague killed many Jews. It is Pinchas, the son of Elazar who saved the day and he was rewarded forever!

Chukat Balak
In a nutshell This week we are in for a double Parsha yet again and the good news is that we will finally be in sync with the Holy Land! Of particular significance are the famous words that appear “somewhere” in one of the two “Mah Tovu O’halecha” – “How beautiful are your tents Jacob (and) your dwelling places, Israel” – a hint to our sorely-missed Shuls to which many people will have the great fortune of returning this week, thank G-d! The first of the two Parshiot is Chukat. The Parsha opens with the laws of the Parah Aduma, the heifer that is slaughtered and whose ashes are sprinkled on top of a person who has come into contact with a dead body. The greatest minds have not quite understood exactly how it works – especially in view of the fact that the Kohen performing this service himself becomes impure in the process, but nevertheless some explain that is can act as a form of atonement for the golden calf – similar to how a mother would come and clean after her child. The Jews then arrive at Midbar Tzin, where Miriam dies,
causing the well they had been relying on to dry up. They complain to Moshe and Hashem tells Moshe to talk to the rock and thereby have water released. In the end he gets angry with the Jews and in fact hits the rock. There are at least ten explanations as to what exactly the sin was here, was it his anger? Or his calling the Jews, “Rebels” or perhaps hitting the rock instead of talking to it as he had been instructed? Either way, he and Aaron are punished and informed that they will not be entering the land of Israel. Aron goes up to Hor Hahar and dies there, succeeded by his son Elazar. When the Jewish people speak against Hashem, poisonous snakes are sent against them and a copper snake is placed upon a pole, which cures the people as they gazed at it (and internalised the message of guarding their tongue). Towards the end of the Parsha we have the victory of the Jews over Sichon and Og, two mighty kings who imposed fear upon their surroundings. This leads directly into Parshat Balak, which tells the story

of a king of Moav called Balak who was frightened of the Jews and hired a non-Jewish prophet called Billam to come and curse the Jews. On his journey, his donkey starts acting strangely, eventually smashing his leg into a wall. This was because Hashem had sent an angel to block the way. Only the donkey had seen the angel, so had drawn to the side. The entire plan goes pear-shaped, as instead of Billam doing what he was hired to do, he ends up blessing them! Balaam also says prophetic words regarding the end of times. After three failed attempts, Balak and Bilam part ways. Finally, Bilam and Balak come up with a plan – we can’t beat the Jews unless we get them to sin. Sadly towards the end of the Sidra, this is exactly what happens and 24,000 Jews died after behaving inappropriately. It was Pinchas who saved the day by putting an end to the main sinners and he received enormous blessing as we shall discover next week.
