This included developing sample ranges, sales, negotiation with factories, through to actually shipping the item to a customer.” Stephen believes strongly

Shocking new Kashrut reforms in Israel

BY YOSSI SAUNDERS Israel’s new goverment have made their first serious move against frum Jewry in a shocking announcement concerning kashrut, including allowing restaurants that are open on Shabbat to receive hechsherim. Religious Affairs Minister Matan Kahana called a special press conference on Tuesday and announced a series of comprehensive kashrut reforms in Israel. According to the new reforms, the Rabbanut will no longer grant kashrut certification but will serve as a regulatory body instead. The kashrut market will open to independent kashrut organisations that will issue hechsherim and employ and oversee their own mashgichim. In general, the Rabbanut will set the standards of the hechsherim but eateries that do not meet the standards of the Rabbanut can receive a hechsher from three

Matan Kahana

Rabbanim who are qualified to serve as municipal Rabbanim, if they approve the restaurant’s standards. This includes eateries that operate on Shabbos. The reforms, which were drafted with the assistance of Ne’emanei Torah Va’Avodah, a left-wing Religious Zionist organization, still require legislative approval.

The Rabbanut responded to Kahana’s announcement with a fierce and public attack on the new Religious Affairs Minister, saying that his plan is “a dangerous initiative that will destroy kashrus in Israel.” “The Chief Rabbanut of Israel completely rejects the dangerous initiative of the Religious Affairs

Ministry to destroy kashrus in Israel,” a statement from the Rabbanut’s office said. “The plan presented today for changes in the kashrus system means the end of kashrus in the state of Israel with the entrance of a wide-ranging variety of organizations with business interests that will grant hechsherim and the ability of every ‘macher’ to grant a kashrus certificate. The result will be the complete destruction and churban of kashrus.” This is part of a general trend of a battle against religious services with the ultimate goal of the abolition of the Jewish identity of the state of Israel.” “The Rabbanut and all Rabbanim in Israel will work to stop this dangerous initiative. Am Yisrael, many of whom insist on proper standards of kashrus k’halacha, vote with their feet and have full faith in the Rabbanut and therefore these dangerous initiatives will be revoked.”

The films were released on Yom Hashoah to educate people about the atrocities of the Holocaust. Cassie Matus, MOTL Chief Executive, said “If the survivors can’t go on the march then the march should come to the survivors. Frank PR and Broadcast Revolution brought this to life with the help of our amazing celebrities and survivors. We are so thrilled that it won two UK Content Awards.” Videos were shared on social media, major news and radio stations. The campaign received 146,561 views.

BY DAVID SAFFER Board of Deputies President Marie van de Zyl has held talks with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem. The meeting on Tisha B’Av was a reminder that whilst antisemitism and hate prevail, Israel is the “first flowering of our redemption”. Wide ranging discussions included the current situation facing the UK Jewish community, including the recent rise in antisemitism, peace in the Middle east and tragic Alta Fixsler court case. Ms van de Zyl and Herzog also covered the growing concerns of the Jewish community in Northern Ireland where Jewish leaders have met NI Secretary of State Brandon Lewis calling on the government to act and avoid the NI Protocol potentially ending Jewish life in Belfast. Supply of kosher food from Great Britain to Northern Ireland has continued with interim arrangements, but, under the NI Protocol, it ceases in September. Lewis, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the government’s lead EU negotiator, Lord Frost, have pledged support. Ms van de Zyl attended the seventh Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism in Jerusalem during her trip and took the opportunity to a hold meetings with Disapora Minister Nachman Shai. The Board’s chief met up with the British Ambassador to Israel since 2019, Neil Wigan and caught up with former UK Israel Ambassador Mark Regev.

United Synagogue remains cautious over ‘Freedom Day’ BY DAVID SAFFER The United Synagogue has issued cautious guidelines for communities as England moved to Step 4 of the UK government’s COVID-19 roadmap out of lockdown on Monday. Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for caution on ‘Freedom Day’ with the majority of legal restrictions on social distancing ending. Recommendations on wearing a face covering in a number of places remain but official limits for simchas, funerals and places of worship have ended. The roadmap exit has dominated the news since Johnson announced plans earlier this month. And caution is still the watchword. Indeed, Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak are self-isolating after being in contact with Health Secretary Sajid Javid who tested positive a week ago. Johnson has conducted meetings remotely from Chequers this week and echoed the view in a video posted on Twitter last Sunday though he remains convinced the Step 4 timing is the “right moment”. “If we don’t do it now we’ve got to ask ourselves, when will we ever do it?” he said. “But we’ve got to do it cautiously. We’ve got to remember that this virus is sadly still out there. Cases are rising, we can see the extreme contagiousness of the Delta variant.” Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi accepts there is no perfect time and backs a “cautious” approach. “It’s right to be careful but it’s also right to get our country back together, opening up and as close to normality as possible,” he noted. Zahawi called on people to respect shop owners and public transport requests regarding face masks. Shuls have been open for services and programs for months but activities have been restricted. The US has welcomed an opportunity for members to gradually return to communal life. But their announcement came 24 hours before 50,000 daily coronavirus cases were reported in the UK for the first time since mid-January last Friday. Similar daily figures have followed. A number of scientists have predicted a surge to 200,000 during the summer. But with 68% of adults fully vaccinated hospital admissions, serious illness and deaths are expected to be lower level than the pandemic peak. Chief Medical Officer, Prof Chris Whitty warned an online seminar at the Science Museum that hospital admissions may hit “scary numbers” and called on people to “take things incredibly slowly” with the UK “not out of the woods”. However, Prof Whitty acknowledged the UK was in a “much better shape” due to the vaccine rollout.

The US aims are to encourage people back to “in-person shul activity”, ensuring they feel as safe and to offer vibrant services and programmes with opportunities to reconnect with a community. The US has taken continual government advice onboard and reflected that in its communal guidance. “Balancing the excitement, we recognise that COVID-19 is going to be with us for the foreseeable future,” the US noted. “There are going to be more difficult periods with surges in virus prevalence to manage which will require local or general adaptations in our approach. We also have a responsibility to care for our fellow community members as well as take personal responsibility. “Whilst the vast majority of people who are ‘double-jabbed’ have good protection not everyone is yet fully vaccinated, nor does vaccination provide perfect protection. Given the current high infection rate, the government and Prof Whitty, are advising us that we must remain attentive and proceed with caution.” The US is aware members have a range of views so have called on shuls to be aware of local pandemic trends, levels of infection in school age and younger adults and take

informal soundings. US aims are to encourage people back to “in-person shul activity”, ensuring they feel as safe and to offer vibrant services and programmes with opportunities to reconnect with a community. “We will follow the government approach, whilst retaining the option to make more stringent recommendations or requirements, if needed,” the US noted. “Aside from US policy each community will set its own policy based on the profile of members, their needs, its building and local context.” When making decisions, communities should aim to reach a consensus amongst decision-makes including Honorary Officers and members of the Rabbinic team. They should also consider the vulnerability of members expected to attend a service or event, consider views expressed by professional staff, service leaders and key volunteers. The US has suggested shuls “pace” the

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

release of restrictions. Policy is split into ‘must do’, should do’ and areas described as ‘you could do’. Holding events outdoors is preferable to indoors, especially when attendance is expected to be high. Good ventilation is essential when indoors at all times at shuls and in all seasons. Communities might provide multiple options to cater to members with different requirements. People must not attend shul if they experience COVID-19 symptoms, have tested positive and are within their self-isolation period, or have been asked to self-isolate/quarantine. Also, people should not attend if they feel unwell. Those immunocompromised should take advice before attending. Measures are in place regarding masks and social indoors, in foyers and bathrooms. Communities should consider capacity to avoid overcrowding, discourage handshaking and ask members not to greet each other with physical contact. Anyone visiting a site must use hand sanitiser on arrival. Communities must ensure a building is cleaned regularly in particular touchpoints such as door handles, handrails and bathrooms. If local infection levels are high, communities should consider resuming daily cleaning. Communities should also avoid crowding around the bimah, avoid use of shared items such as books and shul tallitot. If this isn’t possible, encourage the use of hand sanitiser before and after use. Rules are in place for shul kiddushim, Rabbinic hospitality and private hire events. There is also guidance for funerals, stonesettings, weddings, workplace staff, Chesed activity and visiting. Confirmed cases of COVID-19 at services or an event should be reported to Honorary Officers who will inform the United Synagogue. The US will monitor the situation carefully as we approach the High Holy Days. Regarding social distancing, as of Monday, there are no limits on how many people can meet, the 1m-plus guidance has been axed (except in some places such as hospitals), face coverings are no longer required by law though government “expects and recommends” them in crowded and enclosed spaces. Some shops and transport operators require masks. Elsewhere, nightclubs have reopened, pubs and restaurants no longer require table-service only, there is also no limit to people attending concerts, theatres or sports events. And people working from home are encouraged to return to the workplaces gradually. Guidance is also available for travel, care homes and schools that have ramifications. CAA concern over antisemitism in Green Party BY ADAM MOSES The Green Party has failed to respond to allegations of antisemitic conduct by two leaders from Campaign Against Antisemitism. Claudine Letsae, who recently served as Equalities and Diversity Coordinator and now holds the International Coordinator portfolio, has among the worst prolific record of antisemitic comments of any politician that CAA have experienced. CAA have also drawn the Green Party’s attention to former Parliamentary and local council candidate Jeremy Parker. Using a reported anonymous account recently suspended by Twitter, Letsae has tweeted that Zionists “own the media and everything else in between” and alleged London’s Royal Free Hospital is “run by Zionists.” Letsae, who opposes the International Definition of Antisemitism, has also reportedly described antisemitism in the Labour Party as the “biggest con of the electorate”, promoted an antisemitic Khazar myth claiming Jews are descended from Central Asian people with no connection to the land of Israel and is signatory to a letter published in the London Green left blog accusing CAA of being “a campaign which systematically makes accusations of antisemitism against pro-Palestine activists (esp. Jewish ones)”. Commenting on the plethora of incidents relating to Letsae, a CAA spokesman said,

“It is astonishing that she could have been considered appropriate to serve as the Party’s Equalities and Diversity Coordinator or that she is deemed fit to continue to serve in a different portfolio now, as well as having been a Parliamentary candidate.” Regarding Parker, CAA noted that he has reportedly applauded the description of Facebook as a “weapon of mass Zionist attack”, repeatedly compared Israel to the Nazis and claimed Israel controls the United States, noting on social media, “Time for Trump to be honest and recognise Israeli sovereignty over the United States of America”. Parker, CAA added, has promoted articles undermining the fight against antisemitism and shared an article describing Zionism as “a variant of white supremacy”. CAA has sent antisemitism cases to the Party but the response has lacked transparency. “Without the public adoption of the IHRA it is difficult to see how justice can be done for victims and the accused,” note CAA, who have contacted the Green Party but not received a response. Joe Glasman, CAA Head of Political and Government Investigations, however has been more forthcoming about the under-fire Party. “The various cases that we have brought to the attention of the Green Party are deeply concerning,” he commented. “It is remarkable that one of the worst cases we have

In its report on antisemitism in the Labour Party, the EHRC was clear that parties must have the capacity to tackle discrimination and inequality within their membership and structures, and that its findings applied to all political parties. “For the Greens to keep ignoring antisemitism among some of their leading officeholders, election candidates and members is unsustainable. We will continue to hold the Greens, and all parties, to account over anti-Jewish racism.” CAA advocates for zero tolerance of antisemitism in public life.

Brig.-Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi has been appointed Israel Defence Forces military advocate general. Tomer-Yerushalmi is the second woman to hold the high-profile rank in Israel’s history and succeeds Maj.-Gen. Sharon Afek in the post. Afek is leaving after six years in office. IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kohavi and Defence Minister Benny Gantz approved the promotion. Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit was consulted due to the post’s legal context. “Tomer-Yerushalmi is foremost a wonderful lawyer, with experience and a rich background in all fields needed for the military advocate general,” Gantz announced. “I am sure that she will carry out her position excellently, dealing with the complicated missions that are on the docket, including defending IDF soldiers and international law and assisting the operational echelon in carrying out their position in accordance with the law.” Gantz, whilst IDF Chief of Staff promoted the first female Major General, Economy Minister Orna Barbivai, who welcomed the landmark news. Barbivai hailed Tomer-Yerushalmi as a “trailblazer” for fighting for legal protection for women and sexual harassment. “As Defence Minister, I am proud to name her (Tomer-Yerushalmi) the second woman at the rank of major general, and I am sure she won’t be the last,” Gantz said. The appointment illustrates the IDF’s equality rational that has been praised.

Herzog calls for more countries to adopt IHRA BY DAVID SAFFER Israel President Isaac Herzog has called for more countries around the world to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance working definition of antisemitism. In his first public engagement as president last week, Israel’s 11th president made the plea as he opened the seventh Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism in Jerusalem. Herzog urged nations to defend Israel against an antisemitic backdrop expected at Durban IV World Conference on Racism at the UN General Assembly in New York later this year. “We must operate throughout the world in unanimity, strength, self-confidence and effectiveness to undermine the next Durban conference, because that conference is a conference of hate and diatribe of the worst kind, ridden with antisemitism in the worst sense of the word which brainwashes (people) about who Jews are and what Israel is all about,” he reportedly said. Nine countries including the US, Israel, Canada, Australia, the UK and Hungary have

already boycotted the gathering due to antisemitic targeting of Israel. Herzog, in an impassioned address, spoke about self-defence along with increased legislation and education against antisemitism. “There is a need to educate about the cost of hate, where it leads, how bad it can be and what the repercussions of hate are,” he explained. “In modern politics and public discourse, we see that social networks produce the lowest common denominators of human beings which are fear and hate. “Fear and hate loom over antisemitism. Fear and hate are spread by huge organisations, operations and systems and tilts the balance against Jews, and the right of Jews for self-determination with their own nation state.” Herzog noted that the COVID-19 pandemic and conflict with Hamas in Gaza resulted in a wave of attacks on Jews. Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai described the Gaza conflict in May as a “turning point” for antisemitism. “Our military decisions impact Jewish communities globally,” he reportedly told

delegates. “Violence in Israel immediately turns Jewish communities into global targets.” Shai added, “Antisitmitism is not a Jewish or Israeli problem, it’s a global problem and it must be treated as such.” Developing the theme, Shai said the State of Israel must acknowledge military actions impact Jewish communities globally. “From the extreme Right and extreme Left, events in the Middle East are harnessed as a concerning political tool to target and isolate Jewish communities,” he explained. “As the nation-state of the Jewish people, we stand in mutual solidarity with Jewish communities in times of both conflict and calm. We must build opportunities for Israeli society to listen to and appreciate how Jewish communities experience these challenges.” Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, in a keynote address at the start of the three-day forum hosted by Israel’s Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Ministries under the slogan “collective efforts for collective impact, told delegates that modern antisemitism “exists everywhere”. “Antisemitism never ends with the Jews,” he reportedly noted. “It will always move on to the next target. The fight isn’t between antisemites and Jews. The fight is between antisemites and anyone who believes in the values of equality, justice and liberty.” Lapid added, “If you don’t help us fight antisemitism today, it might be your child someone looks at in the future and says, “I hate him, I want him to die,” he said. World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said that Israel and the Jewish people’s survival was at stake in a sobering address. “Today’s fight against antisemitism is a war, no less consequential than the Six-Day War or the Yom Kippur War,” he noted. “The survival of Israel and the Jewish people is at stake. We must be united as one people in a war you can’t be divided. That’s a sure way to lose. We must put aside our petty differences. We must be one people.” “Israel has become the new excuse for the old antisemitism,” Lauder added, “And our enemies have free rein because there has been no commensurate response from Israel.” Lauder told delegates that Israel and Jews faced enormous challenges as enemies were strong, well-funded and had influential partners. But Israel had survived before,” he added. Lauder shared a report that showed a quarter of American Jews astonishingly believed Israel was an apartheid state and nine percent, even more astonishingly, felt Israel had no right to exist. “My guess is that these are mostly young Jews,” he said. “But there was no clearer example of the influence of “anti-Israel and anti-Jewish haters” teaching in colleges in recent decades.

Lauder called on Bennett’s government to fight with all its power and the Diaspora must help. “The stakes are just too high at this moment in our history to not do this,” he said. “The Jews in the Diaspora are strongly behind the new government of Israel. We need this new government to be strongly behind the Diaspora.” The Lord Pickles, UK Special Envoy for Post-Holocaust issues, spoke about his involvement in IHRA, stating, “It was an important moment for IHRA and an even more important moment in the battle against prejudice and bigotry”. He added that the UK is a “success story” regarding adoption with two-thirds of local authorities, 649 MPs, Crown Prosecution Services, police and many universities adopting it. Lord Pickles added that adoption was just the first step. “We need to focus on how the working definition is being applied,” he said. Bury South MP Christian Wakeford also addressed the forum. Speakers included Prof. Deborah Lipstadt at Emory University. A panel discussion on sport in the fight against antisemitism was hosted by Rola Brentlin, head of Special Projects for Chelsea FC. Ahead of the forum, Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, who was set to speak, noted that the Premier League club’s fight against discrimination was in its very “DNA”. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will fund an expanded Playing Fair, Leading Peace programme in Israel bringing Jewish and Arab children together in football coaching clinics. Chelsea has battled anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination for over three years. “Fighting discrimination and anti-Semitism is in our DNA now,” Buck told PA news agency. “And we don’t see any end in sight for stopping these programmes, we’re just going to keep going on and on, and hopefully we’ll keep making a difference.” He added, “Our No To Hate and Say No To Anti-Semitism campaigns are worldwide programmes. From our perspective and from the perspective of the people that work directly on these programmes, hopefully we leave an imprint everywhere we go.” Some 180 guests attended the forum with hundreds virtually joining proceedings. The biennial event was established in 2003 by Natan Sharansky.

Patel calls for US neo-Nazi group to be banned BY SIMCHA ABIR Home Secretary Priti Patel has called for USbased neo-Nazi group The Base to be banned. Being a member of the group or showing support is punishable by up to 14 years in prison under the Counter-Terrorism and Sentencing Act 2021. The right-wing group was founded in 2018 and comprises self-proclaimed white supremacists and fascists. “We continue to take robust action against evil white supremacist groups, who target vulnerable people across the world to join in their hateful ideologies and their sick promotion of violence,” noted Ms Patel. “I am committed to making it as difficult as possible for these organisations to operate in the UK, both by banning them and increasing the penalties for membership or support, in order to protect the public and our national security.” Campaign Against Antisemitism have applauded Ms Patel for her latest efforts to proscribe far-right groups in the UK.

“The Base is a dangerous, neo-Nazi, white supremacist organisation whose racist ideology poses a real threat to Jews and other minority communities,” noted a CAA spokesman. “Punishing membership or support of The Base by up to fourteen years’ imprisonment is the right step to protect British Jews.” Earlier this year, Ms Patel Priti Patel called for the proscription of neo-Nazi group, Atomwaffen Division. Membership of the group is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Last year, she proscribed neo-Nazi Sonnenkrieg Division as a terrorist group. This followed the proscription of National Action in 2016, which CAA called for. The Base founder and leader, Rinaldo Nazzaro, reportedly once told a potential

recruit that the group was mostly made up of National Socialists, fascists and run-of-the-mill white nationalists. The recruit, Nazzaro added, would step into probably the most “extreme group of pro-white people” you can come across. According to a government statement, proPHOTO: WIKIMEDIA scribing organisations aids the police in its work to disrupt all forms of terrorist groups who threaten our national security. This action also sends a strong message that The Base’s ideology and actions are unacceptable and won’t be tolerated in the UK. The Base has celebrated and promoted the use of violence in an attempt to establish a fascist, white ethno-state by means of a ‘race war’, and members are known to have

engaged in weapons and explosives training. Its founder, Nazzaro, has published a series of videos under his alias covering topics including “lone wolf” activity, advocating guerrilla warfare and leaderless resistance. In January 2020, alleged members of the group were arrested in the US, having been under FBI surveillance for months. The Base is the fifth extreme right-wing terrorist group to be proscribed in the UK, and the third to be proscribed within the last year. The Home Secretary’s decision to proscribe The Base follows advice from the Proscription Review Group, which brings together experts from across government including representatives from operational partners and the intelligence community to assess the risk posed by groups which may be considered for proscription. The proscription order laid in Parliament last week will now be debated and, subject to approval, will come into force.

Zuckerberg antisemitic jibe on Facebook BY ADAM MOSES Mark Zuckerberg has been targeted on Facebook with antisemitic abuse. Facebook’s founder posted photos of his dog wearing different items of clothing including a kippah and tallit. The response was not surprisingly huge, given his profile, but amongst the vitriol were antisemitic images and memes. Some comments included grotesque caricatures of Jews with long, hooked noses, money-grabbing Jews, remarks about Jews controlling the media and other distasteful images. A plethora of anti-Israel comments posted included the phrase “Israel ISREAL terrorism”. Another showed a foot stamping on an image of an Israeli flag. The International Definition of Antisemitism notes, “Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations” is an example of antisemitism.” “Reminder antizionism goes hand and hand with antisemtism,” one user wrote. Campaign Against Antisemitism and the American Jewish Committee called for action following the tweets. A CAA spokesperson said, “We have long called for tougher regulations on social media platforms, whether through engagement with technology companies or by applying pressure on them to act. Notwithstanding some successes, on the whole, antisemitic hatred remains rampant and social media companies are consistently failing to implement their own policies.” CAA added that the antisemitic abuse ained at Zuckerberg was appalling. “It must serve as a wake-up call about his company’s practices,” they noted. “No one is safe from Jew-hatred. Not even Mark Zuckerberg‘s dog,” wrote AJC.

“Facebook’s CEO posted a cute picture of his pet wrapped in a scarf and with a kippa on his head. He has since been inundated with antisemitic abuse. We must make sure social media platforms are free of hate.” Only last year satirical puppet show, Spitting Image, was slated for a caricature of Zuckerberg highlighting a big nose last year. The image of the social media giant CEO resulted in a swathe of complaints concerning antisemitic stereotypes particularly his big, hooked nose. CAA noted at the time, “Spitting Image should explain why a Jewish personality has been caricatured to appear with a gratuitously large, hooked nose and ghoulish appearance.” Pointing out that Zuckerberg in real life was not associated with these facial features, CAA added, “Satire is integral to comedy and a vital part of our public conversation, but it should be based in reality and not on lazy and offensive stereotypes.” World Jewish Congress earlier this month expanded its partnership with Facebook for Holocaust education. Users can search for information on

Aboutholocaust.org in 12 languages. WJC developed the website with UNESCO as a comprehensive, accessible online resource detailing the history of the Holocaust and its legacy. The launch has begun and will continue over the coming weeks. Facebook users can search for terms associated with the Holocaust or denial of it. Visitors are provided with facts about the Shoah and other national, ethnic and political groups by Nazi Germany and accomplices during World War II. The website was available for English language users on Holocaust Remembrance Day last January. New languages include Arabic, English, French, Polish, Russian and Spanish followed later this month by Chinese, Farsi, German, Hebrew, Hungarian and Portuguese. Facebook may add additional languages in the future. In related news, CAA has voiced concern over an astronomical spike in antisemitic content on TikTok according to a new study. CAA were particularly worried about the platform’s popularity with younger users. Hate posts were up by a staggering 912% according to research by Dr Gabriel Weimann of the University of Haifa and Natalie Masri of IDC Herzliya’s Institute for Counter-Terrorism. The study demonstrated a surge from 41 incidents last year to 415 in 2021. And the social media platform saw 61 antisemitic postings this year compared to 43 in 2020. Antisemitic tropes and images in video content included Nazi salutes, Holocaust propoganda caricatures of Jews. Usernames including “@holocaustwasgood” and “@eviljews” rose from four to 59 this year. A CAA spokesperson said, “This dramatic increase in antisemitism on TikTok is an urgent concern, particularly because of the platform’s appeal to younger users.”

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

“Social media platforms can act as hotspots for the dissemination of racist tropes and conspiracy theories,” CAA added. “Technology companies, therefore, have a responsibility to enforce their own policies, ensure their algorithms do not promote antisemitic material and remove dangerous posts and ban repeat offenders.” CAA noted that last year a TikTok Director declared the company’s intention to intensify its removal of antisemitic content but instead, the reverse appeared to be the case. “TikTok must prove it is serious about tackling antisemitism not with empty words but with real action,” noted CAA. Commenting on the report, Dr Weimann recognised the audience and acknowledged it had to be taken seriously. “TikTok’s catering to young, impressionable and naive audiences, combined with bad-faith actors who are posting hateful content online, is something that should be taken very seriously.” The report followed on from an Institute for Counter Terrorism at the University of Haifa study last year which illustrated that TikTok had issues with far-right antisemitism. ‘Spreading Hate on TikTok’ between February and May 2020 recorded antisemitic posts including Adolf Hitler speeches, ‘Sieg heil’ salute postings, neo-Nazi violence, white supremacist symbols and Holocaust denial. There was also outrage when Holocaust survivor and educator Lily Ebert had her TikTok videos targeted by antisemitic trolls praising Hitler just two months ago. A TikTok director told a Knesset Committee that hatred had “no place” on the video-sharing platform last October and increased efforts were being made to remove antisemitic content. CAA has called for stricter regulations on social media sites though they delete hate speech.

Bennett to meet Biden at White House BY SIMCHA ABIR Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is to hold talks with US President Joe Biden in Washington next month. It will be the first meeting face to face meeting between the two leaders since both took up office this year. Iran is set to be high on the agenda for White House talks, including Israeli concerns about Iranian hardline president-elect Ebrahim Raisi. Israel is against the present US administration returning to the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal that was axed by former president, Donald Trump in 2018. Under Biden, the US has pushed to renew the JCPOA deal and lift sanctions in return for Iran halting its nuclear program. But international discussions in Vienna have hit problems. The next round of talks has not been set. Bennett and Biden have spoken by phone but direct talks are seen as being essential to move forward with a unified viewpoint. Biden has welcomed Israel’s coalition

government and hailed historical US-Israel ties. “I look forward to working with Prime Minister Bennett to strengthen all aspects of the close and enduring relationship between our two nations,” Biden said in a statement. “Israel has no better friend than the United States.” Israel growing accords with Gulf and Arab states have been welcomed by Biden, who will no doubt praise news that Foreign Minister Yair Lapid is to travel to Morocco later this month in a historic first official visit by Israel’s top diplomat to the Arab state since the normalisation deal was signed in December 2020. “This is a historic occasion,” Lapid said, announcing that Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita would visit to inaugurate an official embassy. Lapid will inaugurate the Israeli Embassy in Morocco’s capital, Rabat. The landmark visit will herald economic, trade and tourism agreements. It is hoped Bennett and Morocco’s King

Mohammed VI will meet soon. Some 3,000 Jews live in Morocco, hundreds of thousands of Israelis claim Moroccan ancestry.

Morocco has attempted to recognise its Jewish history in recent years. Biden, meantime, has spoken with President Isaac Herzog after Reuven Rivlin made a final official state trip to White House last month. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not invited to the White House since Biden’s inauguration. In related news, Israel’s cabinet has backed the appointment of Dr Eyal Hulata as National Security Adviser and Head of the National Security Council. Dr. Hulata assumes office in August so will not officially be in post when Bennett meets Biden. Bennett commended Dr Hulata on his appointment. “Behind Eyal are many years of experience in both the diplomatic and technological spheres,” he noted. “He is a very creative and experienced person who understands the national security challenges. I am convinced that he will successfully carry out his office.”

Israelis on High Holy Days warning BY ADAM MOSES Israel will not close Ben Gurion International Airport to slow down the spread of COVID-19 after a surge in positive cases since easing restrictions. But Health Ministry Director-General Nachman Ash has confirmed travel abroad should be restricted due to the Delta variant. Ash also warned Israelis the latest spike may result in a nationwide lockdown by the High Holy Days. “We’re not talking about closing down Ben Gurion Airport,” Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz reportedly confirmed on Monday. “Our approach has been and remains to take steps to curb the spread while minimising the damage to the economy and maintaining the routine of the daily life”. Horowitz added, “Yes, it is likely that more countries will soon enter the blacklist, there’s no escaping that. Arrivals and departures from Israel will be closely monitored but we won’t close the airport, we’re not talking about it.” Horowitz also called to relaunch the ‘Green Pass’ and is expected to call on Ministers to back the measure in a coronavirus cabinet meeting this week. Legislation would mandate Israelis attending events of over 100 people to present the pass showing they are fully vaccinated or recovered in order to attend “high contagion risk events”. Ash reiterated Horwitz’ comments at a press conference and called for an end to none-essential travel to cut cases. “We will continue to tighten oversight over our flight policy in the coming weeks

COVID-19 testing booth in Ben Gurion International Airport

and look into ramping up our protection against the importation of (coronavirus) variants from abroad,” he reportedly explained. “It is not the time to go abroad since the pandemic still rages on in many countries. Non-essential travel is unnecessary and could lead to unnecessary infections. It could also bring in new, and potentially more dangerous, viruses and variants.” Ash added that fully vaccinated tourists will not be able to enter Israel soon, despite opening borders on August 1.

PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK

Ash appealed to returning Israelis from abroad to follow isolation protocols to prevent further virus outbreaks. Aside from Pesach this year every festival has seen a lockdown since 2020. Speaking on Channel 13, Ash admitted there may come a point when an announcement is made. “I’m worried we might get there in a few weeks, it’s possible we’ll get there,” he noted. Ash however added that with acceptable behaviour and enforcement, a lockdown

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

may not be needed. In related news, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Economy Minister Orna Barbivai and Horowitz have initiated a “Revelry Pass” to limit large indoor celebrations and slow cases of the deadly virus. The Prime Minister’s Office defined these as including weddings, parties and conferences indoors. Anyone banned can take a rapid virus test outside the venue or present a negative test taken in the previous 48 hours. The pass is required at events with over 100 people but not seated ‘culture ‘events including theatres, cinemas and concerts. Participants must wear face masks, except when drinking and eating. Ministers stated they will boost enforcement of the new guidelines. The proposal was due to be voted on this week. “Our goal is to allow weddings and celebrations to take place in halls with minimum harm to the events industry and maximum protection for Israeli citizens,” Bennett said. Meantime, Israel’s transportation network has received criticism from commuters regarding face masks on packed buses and trains especially with inaction from authorities. There are no guidelines for public transportation. Restrictions at the start of the pandemic included keeping windows on public transport open and limiting passengers to avoid overcrowding. Neither has been reinstated despite a hike in cases. The Transportation Ministry employed inspectors to monitor passengers not wearing masks though they could not enforce regulations.

Ben & Jerry’s is “anti-Israel ice cream” claims Bennett BY ADAM MOSES Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has slammed Vermont-based Ben & Jerry’s over its decision to stop selling ice cream in Israeli-occupied territories. The popular product will be available through a “different arrangement” in Israel according to the company who cited “fan and trusted partner” concerns for its decision. Bennett said the company, founded by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in the late 1970s and sold to Unilever Plc in 2000 for $326 million, had “lost their way” and branded itself an “anti-Israel ice cream”. “We believe it is inconsistent with our values”, Ben & Jerry’s noted on Twitter. Bennett however vehemently disagreed with the ice cream giant in a scathing rebuke citing a moral and business mistake. “There are many ice-cream brands but only one Jewish state,” Bennett noted. “Ben & Jerry’s decided to brand itself as anti-Israel ice cream. This is a moral mistake and I believe it will turn out to be a business mistake as well.” Bennett added, “Boycotting Israel, a democracy surrounded by islands of terrorism, reflects how they have completely lost their way. The boycott does not work and never will, we will fight it with all our might.” Bennett has since spoken with Unilever CEO Alan Jope and made it clear he views with “utmost gravity” the decision as an “anti-Israel” step. Bennett stressed the action had “severe consequences”, including legal, and would take strong action against any boycott

directed against its citizens. Avi Zinger, Ben & Jerry’s Israel CEO, reportedly told Kan News he was pressured not to sell Israelis ice cream in settlements but was legally prevented by legislation. The contract was not renewed. Gilad Erdan, Israel’s US Ambassador has raised the company’s actions with 35 US governors who back Israel to build pressure. “Rapid and determined action must be taken to counter such discriminatory and antisemitic actions,” Erdan wrote, likening the case to Airbnb’s 2018 announcement regarding settlement rental properties. Airbnb reversed its decision within a year following legal challenges. The ice cream is manufactured and distributed in Israel through a licensee partnership since 1987 in the region. But that is at this moment in time set to end. “We have informed our licensee that we will not renew the license agreement when it expires at the end of next year,” a Twitter statement noted. Ben & Jerry’s operates Scoop Shops in Katsir north of Netanya and close to Rehovot south of Tel Aviv in Israel according to its website. Social media users criticised the business for not supporting the Palestinians during its recent conflict with Israel. There was support for Israel but pressure has seen the West Bank settlements decision. Unilver acknowledged in a statement the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was a “very complex and sensitive situation but remained “fully committed” to a presence in Israel. The BDS movement has claimed victory but diplomatically this ice cream spat is far from over.

Bezos blasts into space 52 years later BY ADAM MOSES Jeff Bezos blasted into space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket 52 years after the historic Apollo 11 moon landing on Tuesday. The Amazon founder was accompanied by his brother, Mark, Netherlands teenager Oliver Daemen and 82-year-old ‘60s Texan aviation pioneer Wally Funk, the youngest and oldest people to fly in space. “Best day ever,” Bezos said after the capsule landed following a 10-minute flight. The space ship, named after America’s first astronaut, Alan Shepard, launched to coincide with the iconic Apollo mission made famous by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin whilst command module pilot Michael Collins orbited the moon. Blue Origin reached 66 miles, over 10 miles higher than Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson’s July 11 ride. Branson won the space tourist race but

Bezos noted Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space on April 12, 1961. “This isn’t a competition, this is about PHOTO: building a road to Jeff Bezos SHUTTERSTOCK space so that future generations can do incredible things in space,” he told NBC’s Today. Blue Origin founded by Bezos in 2000 has yet to set our open ticket sales for a once in a lifetime adventure. After 15 test flights the Federal Aviation Administration approved its commercial space license last week. Branson founded Virgin Galactic in 2004. After numerous test flights, two more are planned from New Mexico, the first of 600 passengers with reserved seats at $250,000 apiece will take off in 2022.

The Temple Mount

Bennett calls for “freedom of worship” at Temple Mount BY SIMCHA ABIR Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has called for Jews and Muslims to enjoy “freedom of worship” at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Bennett is the first Israeli leader to appeal for Jewish prays at the al-Aqsa mosque complex. Some 1,600 pilgrims including Yamina Party MKs visited the holy site for Tisha B’Av to mourn the destruction of Jewish Temples. And Bennett welcomed Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev and Israel Police Chief Koby Shabtai managing events with “responsibility and consideration” regarding prayer at the historic site. Israel captured Temple Mount during the 1967 Six Day War but Jews have been unable to pray. Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported Jewish visitors but not prayers. Jerusalem’s Arab population view the annual Tisha B’Av night procession around the Old City walls as provocation. The government recently restricted visits to avoid clashes that led to May’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza. United Arab List is in the coalition. A joint statement with the Islamic Movement warned against Bennett’s actions. “Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs to the Muslims

and no others have rights to it,” the release noted, adding that large numbers of settlers had violated the sanctity of the holy mosque. “This is liable to set Jerusalem and the region on fire and to cause a destructive religious war, particularly when MKs enter al-Aqsa, hold prayers and religious ceremonies and sing the national anthem,” the statement continued. Joint List MK Ahmad Tibi added, “This is a dangerous plan that must be stopped.” The Palestinian Authority condemned Jewish visits to the Mount for “security and stability” issues. UAL allegations that Jews stormed al-Aqsa was rebuffed by Bicom who noted Jewish pilgrims did not get too close to where it stands. Arab protesters clashed with police before the site opened for visits. There were no arrests. Around 100,000 worshippers gathered at the complex to mark the start of the annual four-day Eid al-Adha festivities on Tuesday. President Isaac Herzog and Defense Minister Benny Gantz wished Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas well for the festival. Argentine Jewish community terror attack commemorated BY DAVID SAFFER Latin America politicians joined Latin American Jewish Congress in signing a declaration against terrorism to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the terror attack on the Argentine Jewish community’s headquarters, An official statement signed by Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay officials called for combating international terrorism. The document rejects all forms of discrimination, racism, xenophobia and antisemitism. Eighty-five people died and over 300 were injured on July 18, 2004 when bombers struck the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) building. Iran and Hezbollah have long been linked to the AMIA terror attack that is still the deadliest in Argentina, which has largest Jewish community in South America. “The AMIA attack underscores the inescapable truth that hatred knows no boundaries,” World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said. “It is imperative that authorities on both national and international levels take

all necessary measures to ensure that another 27 years do not pass without justice. We owe this not only to our loved ones in Buenos Aires, but to all victims of terror worldwide.” The virtual commemoration was hosted by the Latin American Jewish Congress in partnership with the office of the president of the Argentina Chamber of Deputies. “Strong democracies are those that speak out strongly against terrorism,” said

Sergio Massa, ACD president introducing the ceremony. Jack Terpins, LAJC president called for justice. “One of the greatest desires of Jewish communities around the world is that soon, the memories of the victims of this attack are accompanied by justice,” he commented. Claudio Epelman, LAJC executive director added, “The AMIA cause is also a Latin American issue. More international cooperation and more democracy will translate into less international terrorism.” Delegacion de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas (DAIA) president Jorge Knoblovits, head of Argentina’s Jewish community, and Ariel Eichbaum, AMIA president, participated with Jewish communal presidents of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay who signed the declaration. Lauder welcomed the Argentine government citing Hezbollah a terrorist organisation and freezing financial assets last year. WJC and LAJC released a commemorative anthology entitled “Justice You Shall Pursue!” the same year. The book features reflections for justice by world leaders and prominent figures. Lauder, Argentina President Mauricio Macri, US President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres contributed. Despite arrest warrants and calls for justice, the terrorists behind the attack have yet to face trial. In February 2005, Attorney General Alberto Nisman was appointed to investigate the attack. Prior to Nisman, Judge Juan Jose Galeano headed the investigation. Nisman (and district attorney Marcelo Martinez Burgos) concluded that Iran masterminded the atrocity in a 674-page report in 2006 which called for the arrests of Iran President Ali Akbar Rafsanjani, Iran’s Foreign Minister and Minister of Intelligence and Security, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and Guard’s Quds Force commanders, two Iranian embassy diplomats in Buenos Aires and Imad Mughniyeh, Hezbollah head of international operations.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

Interpol issued warrants for all except Iran’s president and Foreign Minister in March 2007. According to the Washington Post in 2008, the US and Israel assassinated Mughniyeh in a joint operation in Syria. In March 2012, it was announced Galeano, former Argentine president Carlos Menem, two former heads of the Argentine intelligence service, two Argentine police commanders would stand trial for obstructing the investigation. Menem was sentenced on separate arms smuggling charges in 2013. Nisman, tragically, was discovered dead in his apartment in January 2015, a cause of death was not determined. Twenty-four hours after his death, Nisman was due to testify before the Argentine Congress that President Christina Kirchner and Foreign Minister Hector Timerman blocked his investigation into Iranian involvement to secure an oil deal with Iran. Four days prior to his death, Nisman presented a 289-page report to an Argentinean court alleging Kirchner and Timerman were behind a cover up regarding suspected Iranians. A draft of an arrest warrant for both prepared by Nisman was found at his home following his death. In February 2015, Nisman’s replacement, Gerardo Pollicita, accused Kirchner and Timerman of the same charges Nisman had prepared. Two weeks later an Argentine judge dismissed the case. In 2019, individuals accused of obstructing the investigation were acquitted in a criminal court including DAIA President Ruben Beraja and Menem. When Memen died aged 90 earlier this year, having not served a jail term for other criminal and corruption charges due to being a senator, he was the oldest living former Argentina president. Galeano, originally in charge of the case, and former intelligence chief Hugo Anzorreguy, were imprisoned to six years and four and half years respectively. At the 25th anniversary, Pope Francis wrote to DAIA. “Since the first day, my heart has been with the relatives of the victims, Jews or Christians,” he wrote. In 2005, Francis was a Jesuit archbishop when he signed a petition for justice. Francis criticised terrorism in a message to Argentine leaders on the 20th anniversary of the attack. “Terrorism is lunacy,” he said in a video message. “Terrorism’s only purpose is to kill. It does not build anything, it only destroys. May justice be done.” The AMIA attack occurred two years after the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires was bombed. The blast killed 29 and wounded 242.

ISRAEL POLITICS FROM THE KNESSET with political analyst JAMES J. MARLOW

QUESTIONS TO THE CORRESPONDENT Gilli Goldstein asks: JAMES, If the new government as you put it of the Left-Centre-RightArab, eight political parties, are so concerned about Netanyahu returning as Prime Minister, why don’t they all agree to pass a law preventing an MK with indictments against him, from ever forming a government in the future? Hello Gilli: Leaders of the opposition parties certainly boasted about passing such a law during the last election campaign. When they actually formed the government last month, I believe this was on the agenda. But the government is having a hard time passing any legislation at the moment. It failed to pass the citizenship law and it failed last week in the bill that would have reformed the system for appointing rabbinical court judges. Although that was because the Knesset speaker, Yesh Atid MK Mickey Levy, accidentally voted against it, which resulted in a 51-51 Knesset vote. Parliamentary procedure holds that a tie is tantamount to a defeat, which automatically kills the bill, until it can be reintroduced again at a future Knesset session. But this is what happens when you have a one seat Knesset majority and your coalition partners from across the political spectrum cannot all be relied upon. In addition, if the government focused on getting rid of Netanyahu as their number one priority, and placed it above passing a budget, sections of the media may end their honeymoon period very fast. I do recall when Gordon Brown of the British Labour Party put heavy pressure on Tony Blair to resign soon after his third election win in 2005, the former Conservative leader, William Hague said “I think it will be much easier to beat the Labour party at the next election, if Tony Blair was no longer the leader”. Tony Blair did step down in 2007, Gordon Brown took over and the Conservatives won the election in 2010, albeit with coalition assistance from the Liberal Democrats. At this stage I can’t see any new Likud leader emerging and reaching 30 seats at the next election, as Netanyahu did last March. Netanyahu remains a popular figure and the government know it. The question is, how do they go about getting rid of Netanyahu once and for all? Perhaps, to remain in power for a couple of years without passing much legislation is a strategy.

Ayoub Hassan asks: JAMES, I am a Moroccan Arab but am fascinated with Israeli politics and read your pieces all the time online. You have previously suggested in one of your many articles, that the Bennett-Lapid government will introduce legislation that will allow a party of 4 MK’s to break away and form their own faction. Will this happen? Hello Ayoub: Firstly, it’s great to see an Arab from northern Africa have such an interest in Israeli politics, because nowadays many Israelis do not. They can’t stand the subject. That said, the answer to your question is quite simple. One of the MK’s from Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beteinu party, said he will not support the bill, because in his view, it will encourage more corruption. He was referring to the fact that candidates are chosen, mostly by party leaders (Likud, Labor and Meretz are exceptions). Therefore voters cast their ballot for that party at a general election. But if candidates once inside the Knesset, now as an MK receive a better offer, they ignore voters and jump ship. In other words, a sitting Prime Minister can entice an opposition MK to leave their party and become a government minister with a higher salary, a chauffeur driven car, an office, red carpet treatment and much more. It has happened several times in the past. I believe this is a form of corruption and everything that can be done to stop this from continuing, should be done. Please Ayoub, write again, especially as Israel and Morocco are now good friends and partners. Adrian Harris asks: JAMES, How did you manage to attain such a knowledge in Israeli politics and do you not find yourself going a little crazy sometimes discussing it?

Ask your Israeli political question to James J. Marlow by email: James@TheCommunicationBureau.com or Twitter @James_J_Marlow

Hello Adrian: I am not sure whether I should place a smiley emoji face at the front of this sentence or to write the letters LOL. And for those who think LOL means lots of love, you are wrong. I began to take an interest in Israeli politics when I was living and working in Los Angeles as an entertainment correspondent. Iraq had wiped Kuwait off the map at the time and after losing a great deal of money in an investment that went totally wrong, I checked into Ohr Somayach Yeshiva in Jerusalem. During my time learning, I spoke with the then Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Mendel Weinbach z”l many times about news and politics. Rabbi Weinbach was very well connected with some government officials and gave me several leads which I followed up. I decided at the time that I wanted to pursue a career in political news, politics or something similar based in Jerusalem.

Through Rabbi Weinbach’s contacts, I spoke to many high profile political veterans on a one-2-one basis and developed this huge interest in the system. As to the second part of your question, I do indeed find myself going a little crazy discussing it, (if I am not already completely crazy) but I enjoy having the knowledge and passing on to those who also have an interest. Richard Markovitz asks: JAMES, Who do you vote for when it comes to Israeli elections? Hello Richard: One of the great things about the Israeli electorate system is that it is a secret ballot and I will keep it that way. But I have given dozens and dozens of talks to Israeli voters, some olim, but not all, who find the voting process a minefield. So I break in down for them in small bit-size-pieces, explaining what each party stands for, their manifesto and where they stand on the leftcentre-right divide. Very happy to do the same for you Richard, when you come to vote in an Israeli election.

22 JULY 2021 The opinions on this page do not necessarily reflect the opinions of this newspaper

Four years on OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN This week The Jewish Weekly is celebrating its 200th edition. In just over four years the paper has grown both online and on paper to become a major contributor to UK Jewish journalism. Those four years have seen some very significant changes in Israel, including the move of the US Embassy to Jerusalem and the formalisation of relations with the UAE and other Arab states. Most of us will remember the harbingers of doom claiming that the US moving their embassy to Jerusalem would bring the peace process to a grinding halt. Apparently also, reaching peace accords with Arab states was a betrayal of the Palestinian people. Those crying ‘betrayal’ were a lot less shrill in explaining how the stalled peace process might be restarted; they were quick to criticise yet remarkably slow in promoting a positive way forward. This ‘no’ attitude has, over the last 4 years become much more vocal. The idea of mutual respect of opposing ideas has been

replaced by the demand that only one idea be heard, that of the social media fascists who hunt in packs and seek to destroy the careers of those who dare to disagree with them. Sadly this is being seen in the Jewish community. Anyone who does not dance to the latest ‘woke tune’ is immediately suspect and excluded from discussion and refused entry to social groups or events. This is a very sinister move. The idea that if enough people get together they can stifle any debate is abhorrent, irrespective how much they might yell about democracy and human rights. In order for a proper consensus to arise, there has to be a wide range of ideas, not just trendy far left mantras which bear little relevance to day to day living. Over the last 4 years the community has become increasingly divided, across many

lines, not only those emanating from social media. So what is the answer to our increasingly fractured society? How has this animosity increased so much over the last four years? The answer is complicated, though availability of time has a lot to do with it. We all have so little time now. By the time we get to our thirties and forties, there is just no time. Work and children suck all the time out of the day leaving communal organisations being run by those under 30 or over 60. The older generation understand the importance of communication and debate. Those under 30 have no such understanding. Their aim is to press home their ideas and rubbish everything else. What the last four years has shown is that this intransigence is getting worse. It is time to stand up to these people who shut down

We need to push back against the far-left bullies so that come edition 400 of The Jewish Weekly the divisions will not be so pronounced and there is a more balanced range of ideas and groups in UK Jewry.

debate and lie about their opponents. It is time to try and reach those from the centre and centre-right and involve them in Jewish activities and organisations. In order for the Jewish organisations to be relevant they must be broad based and not just run on a far-left agenda imposed upon them by those same shrill voices who hate any ideas not exactly the same as their own. We need to push back against the far-left bullies so that come edition 400 of The Jewish Weekly the divisions will not be so pronounced and there is a more balanced range of ideas and groups in UK Jewry. This will not be easy, though it will certainly be worth the effort since otherwise the divisiveness will just get worse and we will no longer be one community, just a series of groups yelling at each other all convinced they are the only ones who are right. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

More Jewish newspapers than nationals OPINION PIECE BY JAMES J MARLOW It’s a pleasure to be asked to write a “special” opinion piece for the 200th edition of The Jewish Weekly. As I ponder a subject to choose, from a long list of topics deep within my subconscious, my thought process carefully concluded a look at the UK’s Jewish newspapers. I was writing a great deal of Middle East analysis on Syria, Iraq, Libya and Egypt for the Agudat Yisrael paper, The Jewish Tribune. During those years, I introduced readers to the name ICIL which of course became ISIS. I was in the Knesset when the Tribune asked me to write about “Israeli political developments” and of course I covered the Israeli elections of 2013 and 2015 for the Tribune, whilst working for a number of news networks. With the odd news articles for the Jewish Chronicle, Jewish News and London correspondent for Mishpacha, I came to the conclusion in 2016 that the British Jewish community could benefit from yet another Jewish newspaper. I discovered that many within the community, whether Shabbat keeping or traditional, were not at all comfortable with the JC or Jewish News. They were seen as left wing, Labour party supporting, secular Jewish newspapers and sometimes, extremely critical of Israel. Many stopped buying the JC while others no longer picked up a copy of the free, Jewish News. However because these people were mostly non-strictly Orthodox, perhaps traditional united synagogues members, my research discovered they were uncomfortable with purchasing one of the religious papers. Pity, I wrote some great analysis for the Jewish Tribune and Mishpacha at the time. But there was (and still is) a sea of religious publications: Hamodia, Jewish Tribune, Yated Neeman, Mishpacha, Ami and others. I concluded there was a market for yet another Jewish newspaper which would sit in the centre between the two secular newspapers and the religious or chareidi publications. So I went in search of funding for such a project. This was challenging because those looking to invest naturally wanted a return on their investment. But as national newspapers were cutting back on their professional staff and lowering wages, whilst also seeking out sponsors for their own publications, a Jewish newspaper was going to be hard to get off the ground.

It’s very challenging to run a newspaper. The job comes with weekly headaches, painstaking hours, very late nights, pressures, deadlines and a deep, dedicated commitment to bring accurate and up to date news. Many papers were moving with the times and enhancing their online content. Some were even charging to view articles after the first few lines. Nevertheless I continued my search for investors. Little did I know at the time, that someone else also had that bright idea and in early 2017 he announced his brand new Jewish newspaper was going to launch. I then discovered it was Yossi Saunders, found his telephone number and called him to say, “Well done. “I was trying to do the same thing and you beat me. “Congratulations” and I wished him good luck with the launch. Although Yossi knew I was writing for the Jewish Tribune at the time, he asked if I would also be interested in writing for The Jewish Weekly. In the end, I agreed and whilst Yossi focused on the advertising and general running of the paper, I was responsible for the political news and Israel affairs. At the time, someone mentioned that it would be great if Rabbi Yitzhok Schochet would join the paper with his famous column, originally seen in the Jewish News. I replied, “What an excellent idea” and telephoned the Mill Hill United Synagogue Rabbi to ask if he was interested. Just like my good-self, Rabbi Schochet in the end agreed and four and a half years later, the “Ask the Rabbi” page is still going strong and is one of the most popular sections in The Jewish Weekly. For those who don’t know, Yitzhok Schochet is also one of Britain’s few Rabbi’s that can look after themselves very well, if caught down a dark alley one night with some extremely unfriendly characters. So you have been warned. It’s very challenging to run a newspaper. The job comes with weekly headaches, painstaking hours, very late nights, pressures, deadlines and a deep, dedicated commitment to bring accurate and up to date news. Many including the other newspapers never expected it would last a year, but they were wrong. Readers do prefer a more conservative view, rather than the alternative. Thousands of people read their own favourite sections every week and one

or two may also give my opinion piece a quick once over. As for the future, well who knows? We live in a very fast paced, changing tech world, that has pretty much shut down for the last 18 months and we don’t know what is coming next. But 200 editions of The Jewish Weekly over a four and a half year period, is a tremendous success. So continue to support the paper and keep in touch by writing to us and letting us know what you think.

From the editor’s desk It is with deep gratitude to Hashem that we have now reached the milestone of 200 editions of The Jewish Weekly newspaper. Our first print on 1st March 2017 seems like an age ago, to those who remember the pre Corona life! My daughter Elisheva who will be going into Reception this September remains the only newborn to have ever toured a newspaper print site, and I fondly remember how all the production staff gathered round to see the phenomenon of a little baby sleeping in a pushchair amidst the tremendous noise and sight of three floors worth of heavy machinery spinning newspapers round at top speed! Luckily she had noise headphones on that day… We started the paper to fill a gap in the market and thank G-D, 200 editions, and a 60,000 weekly readership later, we are thankfully going from strength to strength. Our weekly distribution of up to 16,000 hard copies per week has seen us grow to be the largest circulated Jewish newspaper in the UK. This includes over 12,000 copies in London, covering most areas of the capital where Jews are found. We can be found in Brighton and Southend too. Our Northern readers pick up over 2000 copies per week around Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool, and over 100 copies are taken each week in Antwerp.

As always feel free to let us know of any extra shops, stations, shuls or street corners that we can occupy with our blue newspaper stands and we will be there. The last four and a half years has been exhilarating and as any new business will testify much hard work is required from all involved, especially to achieve a newspaper packed full of interesting articles and topics for all ages and backgrounds each week. specialist We could not be where we are “I W ANT IT NOW!” Full colour, today without our dedicated staff and I must thank them all tremendously. From our journalism, proofing and design team, to our sales, distribution and admin team, The Jewish Weekly is blessed with the best bunch of people you could ever wish to have around, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I must thank all our readers including you who are reading this right now.. It always puts a smile on my face when I see people pick up the paper and it always puts a smile on their face when I say hello! Our dedicated readership has become an inviting platform for advertisers and as a free newspaper, our clients are quite literally the bedrock of the business. We are blessed with many happy customers who regularly see great results from advertising in The Jewish Weekly and they keep coming back for more. If you haven’t yet tested the water, simply look at the numbers and call us today!

Dear Editor I congratulate THE JEWISH WEEKLY on reaching another, wonderful milestone in its increasing history of serving the literary needs of the UK Jewish Community. As is my want, I’ve expressed my thoughts, poetically. I want to wish mazeltov to all involved in producing THE JEWISH WEEKLY On having reached your well-deserved bicentennial publishing anniversary May this newspaper go from strength to strength, going forward For often publishing my letters and poems – I do feel honoured Your largely non-judgemental content makes ideal reading for the family

AN OLDIE… BUT A GOODIE Dear Editor In these sometimes worrying times, I thought it might ne a nice idea to inject a little humour. Enjoy… 87-year-old Shlomo Cohen from Miami calls up his son in New York and says, “Listen, your mother and I are getting divorced. Forty-five years of misery is enough.” “Dad, what are you talking about?” the son screams. “We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer, I’m sick of her face!”

Baruch Hashem, in the fast-approaching New Year, 5782 May it be, for all our sakes, that in each week all of you Will have only good things to report on Compared to what you’ve had in 5781 From now until your quadricentennial which I look forward to

Now, the son is worried. He calls up his sister in L.A and says, “They are NOT getting divorced!” The sister calls her father immediately. “You’re not getting divorced! The two of us are flying home tomorrow to talk about this. Until then, don’t call a lawyer, don’t file a paper, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and she hangs up. The old man turns to his wife and says “Okay, they’re coming for Yomtov and paying their own airfares.”

This deal came up in a teams match. After identical auctions, both defences began with the ace, king and jack of diamonds. The declarer for one team ruffed the third round of diamonds and cashed the ace of trumps. When East discarded a heart, declarer saw that he could still make his contract if West had begun with at least three clubs and one heart. In that case, declarer could cash three clubs and the ace of hearts and then ruff his remaining club in dummy for the tenth trick. Alas, West ruffed the third club. As declarer still had to lose a heart trick, he finished with only nine tricks. At the second table, declarer saw that the main danger to his contract was a 5-0 trump division. As there was no way to avoid a heart loser, he discarded the four of hearts on the jack of diamonds. Now the defence would prevail only if West could give East a club ruff, a muchless likely chance than a 5-0 trump break. (There was no chance of a heart ruff on the auction, for surely West would have overcalled with seven hearts as well as his advertised diamond honours.) West shifted to the queen of hearts at trick four. Declarer won with his now-bare ace, drew trumps and claimed. One of the dangers of a two-suited overcall is that it may indicate to declarer a winning, but unusual, order of play.

US shuls offer latest COVID-19 guidance Synagogues across the United Kingdom have been informing congregations about COVID-19 guidance with the country coming out of fourth stage lockdown on Monday. Information followed broad details received from the United Synagogue and shul executive discussions. Decisions across a plethora of areas included masks, seating, the bimah area, various services and kiddushim. Plans are afoot regarding the High Holy Days. Jo Grose, United Synagogue Communities Director, said that the emphasis of guidance for shuls is on local decision-making by Honorary Officers and Rabbinic teams, based on the needs and profile of their communities. “Local leaders will know best what measures to put in place to continue keeping their members safe and our framework outlines important areas they should consider,” she said. “Whilst we are excited to begin to return to normal communal life, we are mindful that COVID-19 will be with us for the foreseeable future and that the current infection rate is high. Consequently, we must proceed with caution.” As an example of shul responses, Bushey United Synagogue are retaining the use of the marquee at Yom Kippur for outside services as in the recent past. No face masks will be required in the marquee, entrances will remain “open”.

In the main shul, they will instruct those attending to wear masks, the seating layout remain largely the same whilst the bimah is being brought back. People will be able to sit in more flexible groupings at their discretion. Members are asked to register for shul for Friday night, Shabbat and high volume services as normal up until Friday afternoon. Confirmatory emails will no longer be sent out. Capacity should continue to accommodate attendees. If capacity is reached wardens and ushers will direct alternative options. Kiddush will continue to held outdoors or in the marquee. At Shenley United Jewish Community, the executive has made an interim decision and will shortly have a wider meeting with the shul Council. Currently, seating will be socially distanced in household bubbles. People must book to attend Friday night and Shabbat morning services. Masks will be required and there is still no Kiddush. From August 16, the shul will maintain masks but reduce social distancing to increase capacity Pre-COVD-19. Those attending must book prior to services. The shul is hoping to allow refreshments at learning events and they are hoping to re-introduce the Sunday minyan bagel breakfasts

in a COVID-19 friendly way. Plans are being made for a suite of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. It is hoped Kiddushim will return for Succot and Simchat Torah. At Alei Tzion masks and pre-booking will no longer be mandatory for any services. Social distancing will be reduced in the marquee where required, Kiddushim resume from Shabbat Va’etchanan, 24th July. Post-service chair wipedowns will no longer be required

There is no change regarding hand sanitiser, doors and windows will be kept open at all services, allowing maximum ventilation, attendees are encouraged to continue bringing their own siddurim and chumashim, members are encouraged to bring children to services. While public health continues to be a key priority the shul aims to ensure the greatest number of people feel comfortable continuing to come or return. At Golders Green Synagogue face coverings are no longer required at services except on Shabbat mornings by everyone over the age of 11 except those who are exempt. Other safety measures remain including ventilation of the building and hand sanitising upon arrival and departure. The upstairs gallery remains open for men and women until the High Holy Days. The shul is also to begin offering a modest outdoor Kiddush option for semachot in the coming weeks, with the aim of resuming regular kiddushim in due course. Safely restoring full community provision remains the highest priority. Further updates will follow in the lead-up to the High Holy Days. All shuls will keep COVID-19 protocols under continual review.

British and Israel hero passes away

Yakov Banin z”l

Reb Yakov Banin of Edgware z”l is the first person to be buried at the new Federation Cemetery in Edgware. An esteemed Tzaddik and community member, Yakov was born in Aden, Yemen in 1921. From a young age, he worked in his father’s store and developed a keen interest in stamps. Moving to Kenya to join the British Army in 1942, Yakov was acclaimed for his military service prior to living in Nairobi where he was employed by a religious Jewish farmer to breed cattle. In 1948, Yakov fought for the Israel Army in the War of Independence where during a shootout in Meron, he was seriously

injured after being shot through his mouth to the back of his neck. Yakov passed out from his injuries and dreamt that he had heard his mother calling out to him. After his recovery, Yakov found that his mother had awakened precisely at the time he dreamt of her, had cried out his name and said Tehillim for him. Recuperating, Yakov moved to England where he married his wife, Ruth. They lived together in Golders Green before moving to Edgware. His working career began for a firm of stockbrokers before setting up a own stamp business. Yakov was a highly respected member of the Yeshurun Federation Synagogue and Kehillas Machzike Hadass in Edgware where the new Beis Hamedrash was named after him and his wife. He was looked upon as a Tzaddik and Talmid Chocham. Indeed, people would queue with their children to receive his brachos. In later life, Yakov moved to Schonfeld Square, Stamford Hill where he was a very popular resident who gave regular shiurim. Though not zoche to have children, a bris pillow is being made in his name in order for his fascinating life and name to be connected to many future new-borns.

Tzipi hosts Chidon Hatanach finalists

Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely meets Orly Maierovits, Sarah Solomon and Leah Kalmus

Israeli Ambassador, Tzipi Hotovely, has welcomed three British Chidon Hatanach finalists for afternoon tea. Orly Maierovits, Sarah Solomon, and Leah Kalmus, were joined by their parents at the Ambassador’s residence. The girls made history as the largest British delegation to reach the final. The prestigious international bible competition is usually held in Israel around Yom Ha’atzmaut but this year, due to coronavirus restrictions, the competition was held virtually. The quiz provides an opportunity for young people in Israel and the Diaspora to engage with Jewish texts and further connect

to their history and identity. The Ambassador shared words of encouragement and inspiration with the girls. She noted, “I have long been passionate about ensuring young people remain proud to be Jewish. The wonderful success of these impressive girls highlights that the future of the Jewish community in the UK is in safe hands.” Ambassador Hotovely added, “I have endeavoured to not only strengthen the relationship between Israel in the UK in trade and security, but also nourish the British Jewish communities’ bond with Israel.” Israel’s emissary hopes a larger number of British students will participate in the 2022 final in Israel.

Belmont & Edgware CC Great fun at science victory by 37 runs week at Lubavitch School in Stamford Hill

Emily ben Zev delighted children once again with her science show

Brother and Sister Penina, 7 and Uriel Graf, 4 received this thank you card from The Queen. In April they sent a drawing and wrote a few words to saying how sorry they were that Prince Phillip had died.

Belmont and Edgware Cricket Club defeated Crouch End Cricket Club by 37 runs On a searingly hot day, Adam Morris managed to win the toss and bat first at Old Camdenians, looking to maintain his 100 percent win record as skipper this season. Openers Michael Blasebalk and Mark Spanjar got to work in the heat, before the former was dismissed early on. Daniel Humphrey strode to the crease quickly getting in to the swing of things, striking up a 64-run partnership with Spanjar. With the sun beating down, the opposition brought their slower bowlers on, with Humphrey eventually being dismissed for 36 after a drinks break. Fred Nathan was bowled trying to accelerate the innings, before Mark Spanjar continued on to 47, eventually adjudged LBW. He was also hit by a beamer, suffering a suspected broken rib, but battled on even while keeping. There was a flurry of wickets with Matt Gittelson and Josh Reynolds both bowled for nine, before allrounders Ben Tilley and Adam Morris struck 15 and 19 respectively, adding 30 off the last four overs, and getting the score up to a respectable, albeit under par total of 163/7. After a quick mid-innings break, Josh Reynolds took the new ball, and managed to dismiss the opener very first ball - caught and bowled. He then bowled the number three, reducing them to 20 for two. At the other end, Jack Mendel, who became the club’s third most capped player, was getting plenty of swing, but had no luck. Reynolds was replaced by Adam Morris who had an instantaneous impact, thanks to a terrific swinging yorker. Drinks brought a flurry of wickets for the skipper, with his 1/13 turning into 4/17 by his fourth over, and eventually a career-best 6 for 28. He was only prevented from taking a hat-trick off the first ball of his seventh over thanks to a small edge on a leg stump yorker Morris was ably supported by the evergreen David Kaplan at the other end, who bowled very tightly. Lively fielding from Daniel Humphrey in the covers saved

Adam Morris after taking 6/28

plenty of runs, while Spanjar, despite nursing an injury, did a great job behind the stumps. Seamers Joel Winston and Ben Tilley toiled amid lower order resistance and heat, before a tremendous run-out from Reynolds, helped seal a 37-run win. Captain Morris said it was a “really good effort from all the boys in the heat. Today was one of my favourite wins of recent time as everyone contributed, especially in the field after posting a slightly under-par score with the bat. “It was obviously nice personally be in the wickets today, but there were some other brilliant performances which could easily fall under the radar, including fielders throwing themselves around to stop every run and bowlers keeping it really tight to build the pressure that paid off with wickets at the other end. A great result to use to build some momentum for our crucial league match next week!”.

From the front line…

Remember to wear your suit of {covid} armour, just in case!

BY JACQUELINE CURZON With the PM and his Chancellor both having to self isolate, we are seeing first hand the nonsense of having people jabbed, but being treated as if they were not. True, numbers of deaths have risen, but these numbers are still low and besides no-one is fessing up if these figures include those already vaccinated. How we interpret statistics is very relevant. Children are obviously next in line for vaccinations, with Pfizer conducting trials for 5-11 year olds from September, extending it to 2-5 year olds by November. AstraZeneca are also conducting children’s trials, and the results Jacqueline Curzon of these are jointly expected by PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY the end of the year. I’d happily siasts out there) settle for the 400k as salary, as would most

of you. Money, money, money. It’s what makes the world go round, so they say, but it’s causing embarrassment across the border, with police wanting to speak to Peter Murrell (husband of Ms Sturgeon) over missing campaign funds totalling £600,000. Money has hit the headlines closer to home, with a Russian billionaire having reached a settlement of £450 million with his ex-wife, six years after she turned down the same offer. Tatiana Akhmedova, who lives in London, was awarded a 41.5% share of husband Farkhad’s £1 billion fortune back in 2016, but having only received £5m, she sued him and their eldest son, Temur, accusing him of being his father’s “lieutenant” and actively assisting him. Ruling in Ms Akhmedova’s favour, Mrs Justice Knowles quoted Tolstoy, saying: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. With apologies to Tolstoy, the Akhmedov family is one of the unhappiest ever to have appeared in my courtroom.” Judges heard that Farkhad Akhmedov (65), had not “voluntarily” paid a penny of the divorce settlement - thought to be the biggest award of its kind made in the UK. Ms Akhmedova took legal action in a bid to trace and seize assets, in particular a £225 million superyacht. She involved Burford Capital to assist, but according to Farkhad, they received no monies from him, effectively reducing her settlement total. Earlier this year a London judge concluded that the ex-wife had been a victim of ‘schemes’ designed to put ‘every penny’ they had beyond her reach. As the couple were married in Russia, divorce and settlement proceedings could have been brought there, but it’s easy to figure why it was instead brought before a London Court, especially given they had lived in London with their two children. Russia is unfortunately not renowned for its transparency - legal, political or otherwise - and often the great bear has been known to toss the key of democracy away. For those of us without the superyacht, who are simply scrabbling away to pay bills, and keep our heads above water, £450 million in the bank would be a fairytale sum, putting us out of reach of the claws of poverty. Perhaps the Akhmedovas might disagree? Sadly, another scooter death was recorded last week, when a teenager collided with a car in Bromley. The unnamed 16-year old was taken to hospital but died shortly after. The 20-year old driver of the car was arrested for causing death by dangerous driving and after providing a positive breath test. This despite a 20 mph speed limit in force across 20% of the

country, which if anything, could actually be a factor in accidents. You - as a driver - are busy checking your speed display or limiter, not focusing on driving and your surroundings, as you would if driving at 30 or 50 mph (subject to local guidance). On the connected topic of transport, it is heartening to hear that steam trains will resume service in Yorkshire, with the Flying Scotsman running between York and Carlisle. With our family all having enjoyed a variety of train heritage trips, it pains me to flag up a potential problem. The Environment Bill will allow our 180 ‘heritage’ steam railways only to import essential coal from Russia and Australia. Is it just me, or does anyone else think the costs of importing coal from far and wide to be unsustainable? Aside from the fact everything has been closed for 16 months, it’s a big ask for heritage/ charitable sites to find additional funding. And finally, they say there is none more truly dedicated than a parent. With my twins moving on shortly to high school, the last remaining child in my primary flock will be my youngest daughter going into year 3. Now, if you thought 21 years of school runs qualified me for a [DPA] Devoted Parent Award, you’d be wrong. Guo Gangtang, though, may just be the most devoted parent in living memory. His son, Guo Xinzhen, was only 2 years old when he was abducted from outside his family home in 1997, after which he was then handed to people traffickers. Kidnapping and child trafficking were very common back in the 1980s, with the one-child law and the national preference for male children. Over the years Mr Gangtang has directly helped seven families find their missing loved ones, and provided clues which have found more than 100 others. From January to April 2021 authorities have rescued more than 700 missing or abducted children, some of whom had been missing for up to 30 years. Throughout all this, Guo kept up the search for his own child, a journey which took him 100,000s of kilometres travelling by motorbike, and which involved him fighting off robbers, sleeping under bridges and begging when he ran out of money. His story was immortalised in a film called Lost and Love, in which a Hong Kong actor, Andy Lau, plays the father looking for his child. Now, following an appeal for blood samples to identify missing children, Guo and Guo Jr found they were relatives, and have been reunited. Gangtang Jr said he bore no malice towards the adoptive family, who brought him up and sent him to university....’and they all lived happily after….’ (we hope). Love and all that jazz Jacqueline x

Tu B’Av may be your lucky day for love! Having completed ‘the three weeks’ and mourning of Tisha B’Av, we come to Tu B’Av, the 15th Av, which falls on Shabbat 24 July this year. It is a joyous event, which has a focus on love for Hashem, the Torah, and one another. Tu B’Av is the final Jewish holiday of the year before Rosh Hashanah and it has a slightly unusual history. According to the Talmud, during temple times, Tu B’Av marked the beginning of the grape harvest, whilst Yom Kippur marked the end of the harvest. It was also the day when the unmarried girls of Jerusalem dressed in white and danced in the vineyards. On this day, girls can approach young men and ask for their hand in marriage – a little like 29th February. Nowadays, it is a popular day to get married on and in Israel it is customary to send a bouquet of red roses to the one you love. Romantic songs are played on the radio, love is in the air and parties are held all over the country. Going to parties for singles and matchmaking events are increasingly popular all over the world. However, it is still true that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach so here are some tips for a great dinner date. Cooking dinner for someone takes

effort so ensure you have the time to prepare and make something you are familiar with. Testing out new creations on a date night might be a disaster! Find out what your date likes to eat or drink and check whether they have any food allergies, so your meal is not interrupted by a visit to A&E! Also try to avoid extremely messy foods and ones that stick in your teeth, such as spinach, spaghetti or corn on the cob! If your date arrives early don’t be afraid to invite them into the kitchen to help with the final touches to the meal. Cooking together is a wonderful way of getting to know someone – it provides a distraction which can help you get to over any initial awkward moments. If you are looking to find love, Date On A Plate, (events for Jewish singles) celebrates 20 years of dating success. Presently working online using a format with Zoom; Sunday night is the place to meet someone special. (No cooking involved it is a speed dating style of event). Chunkydory Jewellery BY MICAELA BLITZ Dani Wiseman has always loved fashion. From a young age, she enjoyed customising her clothes and would often take apart pieces of jewellery and add beads to create her own unique pieces. After completing a fashion marketing degree at Huddersfield University, she was all set for a marketing career, but after a job interview with a big London agency, she decided it was the perfect opportunity to turn her passion into a business. “When I left the interview, it made me realise that marketing was not where my heart was, and that I wanted to follow my real love of fashion and jewellery, so I decided to set up my own business and Chunkydory Jewellery was born. I think that if it had not been for that interview, I may never have taken the plunge!” That was more than 28 years ago, and throughout her career, Dani has used her marketing skills to help promote her business. Her first magazine shoot was for Vogue, which was an impressive start, and since then she has been featured in many magazines and on television programmes too. She started off by selling her own designs at parties, festivals and charity events and even managed to get her stuff into some shops. Dani would also regularly visit large offices, where she would set up a stand so that employees could come and buy in their lunch hour. Since Covid, a lot of this has not been possible, so she has been developing her new website, www.chunkydory.net, as a way to show-

case her products to a wider audience. Chunkydory Jewellery offers customers a wide range of ‘funky, fabulous and affordable jewellery’ such as bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings. Dani updates the website regularly with new and interesting pieces like her personalised sterling silver name necklaces which are very popular for batmitzvah and birthday gifts. As well as selling jewellery through her website, Facebook and Instagram, Dani runs private jewellery parties where she comes to people’s houses and gardens and sets up her collection. The ‘hostess’ of each party receives 10% commission to spend on jewellery on the day. These ‘hostesses’ then get friends and family together for a fun evening where people can try the jewellery and find something that they love. For Dani, these parties have always been a very successful part of her business, but since Covid she has had to find different methods to continue with these. “Finding another way to hold the house parties was a bit of a challenge during lockdown, but we were able to adapt to it by holding the parties virtually. Friends could get together via Zoom or What’sApp, and

They worked really well and were very popular and are continuing even now.” Dani is always happy to speak to people who might be interested in organising a party especially with the imminent restrictions being lifted. Hosting a party is a great way to bring your friends together for a fun evening, and shop in the convenience of your own home. Earlier this year, when restrictions started to be lifted, Dani held her first garden party at her home under her trusty purple gazebo. Over a period of five hours, groups of up to 6 guests could come to her home within an allotted hour time slot and see all the products on display. It was a great success, and everyone that attended really enjoyed it. Dani has now started doing her public events again and is regularly selling her Chunkydory Jewellery across North London and

Kisharon set for new fundraising events BY DAVID SAFFER Kisharon is approaching the end of COVID-19 restrictions announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson with caution. But fundraising activities are going to be innovative and exciting in the post pandemic world. Founded in 1976, Kisharon provides education for children with learning disabilities. The charity offers opportunity and support, as well as education. Individuals are taught the skills they need to live independently within the community and to lead fulfilling lives. Throughout the pandemic dedicated staff offered front-line services at an unprecedented time. The Tuffkid Nursery, Wohl Campus, Kisharon Noé School and

Kisharon Further Education College all operated. Kisharon centres were among the first to reopen following the initial lockdown for day opportunities but caution is now the watchword. Fundraising was a challenge but Kisharon came through and are looking forward with optimism. “We are not going back to what we were doing, pre-COVID-19 fundraising is not what we are looking at any more,” said fundraising manager, Jessica Levy. “It’s how we build on what we have done and take it to that next step. “Our large events, networking events we are looking to bring back will be in a way that fits society. Everything we do must be enticing and exciting. We won’t go back to the same formulaic style events that happened for many years even though they were successful and worked. We’ve proved that we can do fundraising without being face to face, now let’s show how we can do it with and without being face to face, by offering ‘out of this world’ events that people feel they have to attend.” Beverley Kaye added, “Our donors are our customers. The key thing is, whereas most retail will survive because they turned themselves around online, fundraising has to think smarter, think further and think much more what our donors want instead of thinking you can get away with a dinner once a year. We are going to be more discerning, more outward thinking.” Kisharon are moving forward in the

post-COVID-19 world and one area of future fundraising is the world of art. Jessica explained, “We held an art event a few years ago when we partnered with a number of artists who developed some incredible pieces of artwork with people that we support. At an auction we sold off the artwork. This event has so much potential and we are hoping it will be three times bigger than before.” She continued. “There is a real purpose to this type of event, it feeds into our core purpose but is an exciting event to engage with Kisharon and also network at a nice venue with a reception. Some pieces will be auctioned, some sold, and it will be ticketed. Artwork previously produced has been stunning. We believe an event like this our donors will want to attend. They can network then put pieces up in their homes.” Beverley added, “It’s a lifestyle pitch and the cute thing is we will get wellknown sculptors to work with people that we support.” Jessica confirmed that Kisharon would do another matched funding campaign after previous successes. “It has proved to be a high return of investment,” she said. “They have been incredibly successful. People like it for a number of reasons. You are doubling your money and we can involve more people. It really reaches out to more people that don’t feel they can necessarily contribute in other ways. It’s also a great opportunity for us to communicate with donors in a positive way. What we will see next year is a number of events in the build-up. And an exciting part is taking what we have learnt in the past 18 months and building on it.” From a challenge perspective, Jessica noted that people had done the London Marathon and Royal Parks events but Kisharon is seeing an increased appetite for cycling events. “We are looking to develop a Kisharon cycling event but also buying into third party ones,” she said. “It’s an area we want to develop, it’s more long term but we are excited. It’s essential to match services

with donors and build relationships.” Kisharon have many loyal donors but like many charities they want to engage more with the late 20s and early 30-year-olds. “This has to be an area of growth but it’s a tricky one,” Jessica said. “From a fundraising perspective this demographic is not always the audience with the most disposable income. They are starting families, buying first and second properties, which makes perfect sense. On the flipside, this age group is the future so it’s how we engage them with Kisharon so when they have more disposable funds, we are a charity of choice. We are building a committee and people have been involved in the past, children of trustees

and donors who have a connection. We are developing a relationship and finding events they may like to attend such as high-end wine tasting. It’s not an immediate fundraising solution but one certainly for the future.” Beverley added, “Particularly with this age group it’s about being more discerning. For too long charities have thought, this will be a good idea let’s do it, but that won’t cut anymore. We have to get in the mindset of what a donor wants, how can I deliver it.” Times have changed in society in many ways but Kisharon is forward thinking and ready to take the next steps to keep moving forward to support its many clients.

JCD gears up for 2022 Heritage year BY DAVID SAFFER Jewish Child’s Day celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2022. The charity was founded in 1947 by Arieh Handler and Dr Israel Feldman to help aid the rehabilitation of the Jewish children from Eastern Europe after the Holocaust. Their philosophy behind the inspiration was to fully involve children of the UK in raising money for less fortunate brothers and sisters around the world on the first Sunday of Chanukah. The first JCD was held on the 14th December 1947 and was a resounding success, raising £14,000, a tremendous amount of money at that time. Through the decades, the charity has evolved, from a once-a-year collection to a year-round fundraising necessity. But the charity’s philosophy has never wavered, to instil in Jewish youngsters a sense of responsibility for the care of Jewish children who are less fortunate than themselves and to actively involve them in raising the funds which can bring dreams to reality. A JCD collection box then ‘blue egg’ collection box has been iconic symbols in a Jewish home for generations of Jewish children. Seven plus decades on the charity has not lost sight of its guiding principles. JCD supports around 19,000 children annually, by allocating grants of approximately £500,000 to around 130 different projects in the UK, Israel and smaller Jewish communities around the world, those who are challenged by physical, learning or emotional difficulties, children who have been abused, or neglected and who don’t have a safe and secure family or home, and those who are battling against severe illness or trauma. From its modest beginnings, JCD has helped over half a million Jewish children in need. Through grant funding JCD provides medical, educational, therapeutic and humanitarian aid, respite care, protection, and poverty relief to children in need, worldwide. JCD believes that “no child should live in poverty, need or suffering anywhere. This week the UK finally came out of COVID-19 restrictions and like many Jewish charities the past 18 months for JCD has been challenging. The pandemic has resulted in new working protocols and those closely associated with the charity are ready to drive the organisation forward.

Anthea Jackson, Chief Executive, joined the charity at the end of 2019, just months before the pandemic hit. “The impact of COVID-19 was immediate,” she recalled. “Many of the projects we supported had to close or temporarily put a halt to their services. However, the need to support the most vulnerable further did not go away, £53K was immediately given to Israel projects supporting emergency services, which included an ambulance, whilst around £25K was given to schools and projects here in the UK to assist with services including PPE, food parcels and school meal vouchers.” “It was important to keep the awareness of what we do in the forefront,” Anthea added. “We let projects know that we were here. We made sure that organisations we are supporting were safe. There were vulnerable children with special needs in difficult circumstances, there was a call to action and we were able to support the projects.” JCD’s seven-strong team continued to work throughout the pandemic. “We were very fortunate that we could all work from home but had to change our way of thinking,” recalled Anthea. “We could not hold live events but decided to continue our postal appeals. We hold four ‘old fashioned’ postal appeals a year. Our 2020 Pesach appeal was just as we went into the pandemic. Children needed help right on our doorstep. It was essential to provide medical equipment that we could transport to families. We have loyal donors who like a ‘hard’ appeal through the post. The narrative was very strong because COVID-19 was happening around us, we exceeded our budget.” JCD worked on a plethora of initiatives including with PJ Library who post free

books to 8,000 children in the UK. “We had to improvise,” recalled Anthea. “We wanted to get our name known by a younger audience, to breath new oxygen into the charity. Books were sent out by PJ Library with a height chart we designed about being kind and respectful. The collaboration was an incredible success. We also teamed up Rachel Riley who did an interview with an author Ben Freeman and a local actress did interactive Zoom storytelling which was really popular.” As the world comes out of lockdown, JCD must find new ways to operate and continue to support children across the world. “Wherever there are Jewish children who are orphaned, sick, deprived or disabled, JCD will be there to provide support which we hope in some way, will improve the quality of their lives,” noted Anthea. “We have such a rich heritage with tremendous loyalty to our charity 75 years on, but with so many long-standing charities, we need to find ways of breathing new oxygen and expanding our demographic as we head into our milestone year and we

also must encourage future generations to understand the value and importance of Tzedakah. “We have fantastic loyalty, but we have to be sustainable and have longevity.” A new role for the charity has been created, as JCD heads into its landmark year. Head of Income Generation, Russell Brody joins the team at the end of this month. He said, “In our ‘heritage year’ I look forward to working with the team and building on the relationships they have developed with our donors and introducing more exceptional projects to them so that together we can fulfil our mission statement that no child should live in poverty, need or suffering anywhere.” JCD has exciting plans to share in the coming months. Plans are underway to scope out and to award life-changing, long-standing grants which will help generations to come. “We must create strong links between our donors and our grant recipients, so by awarding heritage grants, we aim to both strengthen our mission and build on our

narrative and long-standing relationships with the projects we support, to ensure we can have the most impact on the neediest of children,” said Anthea. Amongst many JCD projects in the UK, The Boy’s Clubhouse helps teenagers at risk of social or family exclusion from the Jewish community whilst Arts Therapies for Children (ATFC) sends therapists into Jewish primary schools to support children with behavioural or emotional difficulties. Noa provides a caring, non-judgemental environment for adolescent girls to empower and help build self-esteem. In Israel, Simcha Layeled improves the quality of life for thousands of disabled and seriously ill children in hospitals and rehabilitation centres. Ohr Meir & Bracha gives immediate assistance whenever possible to meet the needs of victims of terror and

their families. Elsewhere in the world, Mazal Tov in Belarus enables children to play and learn about their Jewish heritage. Kindergarten areas double as a physiotherapy unit for children with special needs. The Scheiber Sandor Jewish School in Hungary educates pupils in a Jewish way of life. Students visit Auschwitz and attend Holocaust memorial services. They also protect Hungary’s Jewish cemeteries. Tzedaka Foundation improves living conditions for thousands of vulnerable, at-risk Argentineans. 2022 is going to be a milestone year for this very special charity that has been around for decades benefiting generations of Jewish children globally. Sacks Morasha

22 JULY 2021

BY MICAELA BLITZ With many schools across the country breaking up for the summer this week, many teachers have been reflecting on the challenges and achievements not only the past school year, but throughout the pandemic. For Justin Kett, Head of Kodesh and Deputy Head at Sacks Morasha Primary School in North Finchley, those past 18 months have meant adopting new ways of doing things, but he feels that at every point along the way, the school has taken a ‘can-do attitude’ to the situation. “There have been so many changes to the way that we work, whether it was home schooling, periods of isolation for pupils and staff, creating teaching bubbles or adhering to social distancing, but we have remained positive and always found the best way to deal with the situation without too much upheaval for the children.” It is this focus on the pupils and their wellbeing that is at the heart of everything that the school does, and this is something that has become even more relevant due the current situation. Pupils have all been affected in some way by these changes and for those with higher levels of anxiety this

has been a particularly challenging time. This is something that Justin and the rest of the staff are always on the look out for in their classes and the school has created a

Wellbeing Room for those needing additional help and support during school. “One of the main strengths of the school is that we know our children very well on an individual level, so we are able to see when they might be struggling and help them where we can. There is no such thing as an ‘invisible child’ at the school.” Many activities were unfortunately not possible due to restrictions, but the school has found new and exciting ways to still help the children learn. During the summer term, regular ‘Magic Mondays’ and ‘Wacky Wednesdays’ gave students the chance to take place in fun activities from puzzle workshops with the Happy Puzzle Company to Lego building sessions. The end of year play, ‘The X Factory’ also had to be done differently. The play was performed by students without an audience and was instead recorded and distributed to family to watch. As a response to the situation, the school’s annual ‘Morasha Cares Week’, traditionally a project for Year 6 Students, was extended to the whole student body this year. The

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

programme which took place in June, raises awareness and money for different charities, whilst also encouraging pupils to give back to the wider community. “Morasha Cares Week is a great opportunity for our students to be more outward facing, and we felt that this year, it was more important than ever to connect to the wider community and help others who might be struggling in some way.” Each class chose a charity to raise awareness and money for. Throughout the week, pupils did various activities from car washing, song writing, and holding a bake sale to raise money. Charities that were supported by the project included Camp Simcha, Great Ormond Street Hospital, The British Heart Foundation, The Yoni Jesner Foundation, Rays of Sunshine, Young Minds and Warming the Streets. The school also collected food for the North London Food Bank. Whilst the past year has been ‘relentless’, Justin is focussing on the new term in September and the possibilities that it presents. The introduction of new smartboards and I-pads for students will mean that more pupils will benefit from digital learning, something that the children respond to very well. These purchases were possible due to the fundraising efforts of the PTA over the past couple of years, as well as due to the support of the school Trust. He also hopes that the summer holidays will give staff and students the chance to relax and take stock on the past term and what they have achieved in the face of adversity. “All of the children at the school never cease to amaze me, and I have been impressed with how resilient and positive they have been in dealing with such an unusual situation. The staff have been amazing and worked so hard to accommodate changes throughout. I am really proud of all of them and looking forward to starting a new term in September when hopefully things will start feeling a bit more like they used to be!”

Israel – The Eilat Challenge

Malcolm Ginsberg has been Jewish Weekly’s travel expert since the inception of the newspaper. He first went to Israel back in 1961 as part of the first ever combined British Scout and Guide party to represent the country abroad. It was of course Israel’s barmitzvah year and the reason for a special Jamboree. The group even met Golda Meir and scaled Masada but never went to Eilat. Back then it was seen as Israel’s gateway to the East with aspirations to develop as a holiday resort. He says he wants to be controversial with this special 200th edition. Ramon INternational Airport, Eilat

“Plaudits are OK but we must look to the future. Back in March 2017 you could fly to Eilat via Ovda, a military airport 40 miles to the north on Monarch Airlines. The little airport in the centre of the city dating back to 1964 was fine for getting to and from Ben Gurion, but not suitable for jets from Europe. Israel has changed dramatically since 1961, especially in terms of tourism with the liberation and revitalisation of Jerusalem the major attraction but also the development of Tel Aviv as a huge metropolis, holiday resort and financial centre. Eilat has also changed, now a thriving 50,000 population city, and growing, with top class hotels, wonderful sandy beaches, and plenty to do day or night. It really is the place where the desert meets the sea.

Malcolm Ginsberg and wife Linda at the airport 2018

However getting to Eilat from the United Kingdom remains a problem. When Monarch failed in October 2017, Wizz Airlines – then a newcomer to Luton Airport – quickly jumped in and took over the service with what turned out to be short-lived enterprise. In January 2019 Ramon International Airport opened, in technology and security terms as advanced an operation as any airport in the world, capable of even taking an Airbus A380. Just 11 miles north of the city work first started in 2013 and as it reached completion the new Jewish Weekly visited and enthused. But what about flights to Ramon from the UK in normal times. If you want to go to Eilat from Britain you have two alternative ways. Either fly to Ben Gurion on British Airways, easyJet, El Al, Virgin

Atlantic or Wizz from Gatwick, Luton, Heathrow, Manchester and Stansted connect at the domestic and low-cost airline Terminal 1 for the Israeli carriers Arkia or Israir. Or take one of the following alternative indirect routes to Ramon. I am not saying they are all practical. Via Amsterdam (Transavia), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Helsinki (Finnair), Paris Charles de Gaulle (ASL Airlines), Paris Orly (Transavia) and also from two of Moscow’s three airports. If all goes well in terms of travel when the pandemic is over , and it is safe, people will want to holiday where there is guaranteed sunshine and every chance of having a wonderful time particularly in the winter. But even with the splendid new airport,

Eilat coast

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

named after father and son killed in aviation accidents (Ilan in the fatal Columbia mission in 2003 and Asaf in a training accident with the IAF 2009) you cannot fly direct to Eilat from the UK, in 2019 fourth in terms of visitors to Israel. easyJet has told Jewish Weekly that its Tel Aviv routes are some of its busiest and most profitable. My plea for winter 2021/22 is for a British airline to return to Eilat (Wizz is technically British too). For easyJet it would be worth the gamble, British Airways maybe, or Wizz. Arkia and Israir have the right aircraft too. Perhaps Jet2 from Stansted. Maybe even El Al. Covid-19 permitting of course. Eilat as it starts to develop the old airport site in the centre of the city needs direct non-stop flights from the UK.”

ASK THE RABBI

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com DOES WRITING LASHON HORA COUNT? Dear Rabbi Is it permitted to write something that you know is outright gossip (lashon hora) in a secret personal diary? Orah Dear Orah Strictly speaking, the sin of speaking badly about another is when it involves another party – in other words where you share it with someone else. But consider this: There is a story told about the Bal Shem Tov where he was sitting, studying with his students, when two men came into the study hall and started feuding. At one point one man yelled to the other: “If I could, I would tear you from limb to limb.” The Bal Shem Tov immediately instructed his students to put their hands on one another and the front two put their hands on him. He often had transcendental experiences and this time he “took his students with him.” They suddenly saw a very vivid image of the one man indeed tearing the other one apart. They were mortified and immediately let go of each other, whereby they were snapped back into reality. The Bal Shem Tov explained: “There are various parallel universes. There is a world of deed which we inhabit. There is also a world of speech and a world of thought. Even as you only say something down here, it does become actualised somewhere else.” The point in your context is, even as you are not committing

the sin of lashon hora per se, the fact that you are writing it is giving expression to your thoughts and so somewhere else, it is being expressed. To put it somewhat differently: When you speak about a negative trait in someone else, you are actualising it and giving it vitality (and I would say the same applies to writing). To the flipside, and a good lesson to learn is, it works like that in the positive as well. Kind words, positive encouragement, speaking nicely about another, triggers that within the other and brings that out in them as well.

IS IT GENETIC?

Dear Rabbi Given that the only source of Cain’s murderous genes, resulting in Abel’s death, could have been his parents – Adam and Eve - and they were created in G-d’s image, from where did they acquire those genes? Leon Dear Leon Who said it’s genetic? Are we to assume every time someone commits a crime they must have inherited the propensity from their parents? Cain cannot blame his parents much as therapists today encourage children to blame everything on their upbringing. Indeed, one of Adam’s flaws was that as soon as he was challenged by G-d for eating from the tree, he blamed Eve. When creating man, G-d instilled within an evil inclination thus engendering a propensity towards evil and thereby enabling free choice. That’s the way

RESPECT YOUR MOM – SHE TAUGHT YOU ALL YOU KNOW!

Dear Rabbi We read in the Ten Commandments that we have to respect our parents. What if I don’t get along with my mother? And does it also apply to in-laws? Katie Dear Katie What does that mean – you don’t get along with your mother? She brought you into this world, did she not? She bathed you, fed you, clothed you – and now that you are able to assert your own authority you decide to turn your back on her? A woman once came before the Lubavitcher Rebbe complaining about the fact that she and her mother had fallen out over money issues. The Rebbe looked to her lamentably: “I just lost my mother this year. Do you know how much money I would give to have my mother back with me, for even one day? And yet you allow for money to tear you apart!” In the words of Shakespeare’s King Lear, “How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is To have a thankless child.” Your mother taught you

In this weeks Mishnah, we see how dearly beloved the Jewish people are to Hashem, and how precious this gift of His Torah actually is. People often take it for granted but if we stop and think for just a few moments we will see it for the gem that it is. Imagine a world without social justice and morality. numerous questions about this subject matter. Just don’t wait till it’s too late. As for the in-laws, the Talmud teaches the expanded legal scope of the mitzvah as derived from the Biblical text to induce a subsidiary responsibility to honour other senior figures of authority, including one’s inlaws, even though they are not your biological parents, hence not necessarily deserving of your gratitude (though they did provide you your spouse which surely counts for something).

the image of G-d is no world at all. Being created ‘bzelem Elokim’ is one of the first things mentioned in Bereshit, and indeed at the highlight of a married couple’s life at the poignant ceremony under a chupa, we sing this fact during the Sheva Brachot. It is a big responsibility to copy Hashem, we are created in His image and have a moral responsibility to act like Him too. May we all merit to live up to this lofty level, Amen. Vaetchanan: Declaration of Dependence BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN Where would the desert generation be without the heroic prayers of Moshe? Twice the young nation rebelled, first betraying their vows at Sinai, and, subsequently, scorning an invitation to enter the promised land. Twice, Moshe’s prayers rescued the Jewish people from Divine wrath and possible annihilation. At one point Moshe even fasted 40 days, desperately batting for the survival of his beloved rebels. Though our Avot modelled the original concept of tefilla, Moshe provided much of its architecture as well as some of its basic content. Moshe was our supreme Torah teacher and our greatest prophet. Additionally, he demonstrated, that tefilla can bend the will of G-d. After a lifetime of praying for others, Moshe now prays for himself and for passage into a homeland from which he was barred. Facing a crushing punishment, he furiously prays to repeal the decree so he can voyage into the land of his dreams. According to the midrash he prays 500 different prayers, but, sadly, never received the response he coveted. Throughout his many years of prayer, Moshe had assembled a vast “arsenal” of different forms of tefilla. Prayer, as an emotional encounter between Man and G-d, spans a broad spectrum of voices and “tones”. Our Chazal delineate seven basic brands of tefilla, but, clearly, there are many more variants and countless “derivatives” of these basic seven. From this expansive menu of tefilla choices, Moshe selects an interesting option: he begins with the word “V’eatchanan”- a word which lends the parsha its title. This term “V’etchanan” possesses dual meaning. Firstly, it refers to a “petition” or an “appeal”- in this instance Moshe’s plea to enter Israel. Yet, the word also refers to a request which is “undeserved”. The term V’etchanan is analogous to the word ‘chanan’ or even ‘chinam’, each of which evokes the concept of something ‘free’ rather than merited. Often, we pray for an outcome we believe we deserve. We invoke our own virtues, and we also summon the achievements of earlier generations- zechut avot. Still other times, we ask G-d to freely grant us unmerited mercy. We stare at our own frailty, and, out of our weakness, we call to G-d for mercy. We would have expected Moshe to lodge his request based on his past accomplishments. Given his years of endless self-sacrifice, this modest request seems fully warranted. Yet Moshe requests a “free pass” into Israel because, in his own mind, he doesn’t deserve this grant. By praying with the word V’etchanan, he requests an undeserved “favor” from G-d.

This decision spotlights just how humble Moshe was. He had scaled the heavens and split the sea, but this didn’t inflate his ego, nor did it yield any sense of entitlement or claim to G-d. Standing at the door of the land of Israel he pleaded as a beggar would. When we are content, and our needs are filled, it is generally easier to feel “humble”. However, desperation and urgency plays tricks with our minds, “convincing” us that we deserve our wants and desires. Sometimes, we justify our deepest desires by persuading ourselves that we deserve them. Moshe is humble even under duress, meekly requesting a favor he doesn’t believe is his “right”. His plea of “V’etchanan” spotlights his uncanny humility. More importantly, Moshe’s tefilla underscores the power of receiving favors. Receiving something we deserve is transactional and doesn’t further any interpersonal bonds. By contrast, the provision of undeserved favors forges relationships. The impact of a favor is felt both by the provider and by the recipient. Obviously, the recipient of a favor is grateful and appreciative for his underserved gift. Equally important though, providing help and assistance, bonds us more deeply to the recipient of our kindness. It is human nature to become emotionally invested in the subjects of our compassion and of our altruism. It is true in our interpersonal relationships, just as it is true in our relationship with G-d. Moshe prefers a Divine gift, recognizing that it will deepen his relationship with G-d. Favors and underserved kindness are the building blocks of relationships and of friendship. We all cycle through two very different phases of human experience: independence and dependence. G-d fashioned us free and capable, empowering us with great potential and tasking us with grand mission. Human proficiency capitalizes upon those gifts while incompetence and ineptitude squanders them. Yet, G-d also desired that Man live a life of dependence. By providing a spouse, G-d introduced Man to the concept of “relationships” and to the experience of dependency. G-d desires that we acknowledge our inherent limits and resolve them by leaning on others for that which he can’t achieve independently. Our success in life rests on our ability to carefully calibrate between these two frequencies of the human condition. Hillel’s famous statement distills these two phases of human experience: “If I am not independently competent what am I; if I stand alone I am futile!”. We are meant to be self-sufficient, and, other times, we are meant to be dependent upon the favors and kindness of others. Numerous factors in modern society motivate human independence while

Social media has replaced actual communities with virtual ones, and we are no longer dependent upon relationships for our social interaction. devaluing human dependence. Democracy sanctifies human independence and the value of each citizen, prioritizing the individual over the state and the collective. Our culture celebrates individual effort and respects rugged individualists who can “go it alone” and provide for themselves and for their own needs. Politics and culture have each promoted independence at the cost of dependence. The word “independent” is venerated, while the word “dependent” is sometimes seen as a pejorative. Technology has expedited work which, in previous generations required collaboration and teamwork. Life has become easier and household appliances have eliminated our dependence upon the teamwork of a family. Social media has replaced actual communities with virtual ones, and we are no longer dependent upon relationships for our social interaction. In a society of political, economic and cultural independence we are quickly forgetting how to be “dependent”. Dependence also carries personal costs. We take great pride at our own independence and the dignity of self-sufficiency. Embracing ‘dependence’ shines a light on our personal limits and weaknesses. Dependence demands vulnerability which is

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

frightening. We are more comfortable when posing as strong and self-sufficient. In addition to the emotional cost of dependence there is also a behavioral cost. When we enter relationships of dependence, we are forced to compromise our own needs while making room for others. Independence allows us to control our personal space and preserve our private interests. Independence is cost-free- at least to our personal lifestyles. Ironically, it is much easier- especially in today’s democratic and technologically advanced society- to live independently. However, the temptation of “independence” hampers deep relationships. The strongest relationships, such as marriage and friendship are built upon mutual dependency. Without leaning into dependence sometimes our relationships stall or remain shallow. Moshe’s begging reminds us that sometimes we have to learn how to accept favors. Rabbi Moshe Taragin is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. Weekly Dvar Torah F R O M E R E TZ Y I S R A E L

Seeing Grief, Seeing Comfort BY RABBI YEHOSHUA FASS This week’s Haftarah, opening with “Nachamu, Nachamu Ami” – “Be comforted, be comforted my nation” (Yoshiyahu 40:1) – always falls on the Shabbat following Tisha B’Av. It marks the resumption of weddings and all forms of entertainment that are reduced during the three-week mourning period leading up to Tisha B’Av. Is this feeling of comfort, this transition and resumption of celebration appropriate, just days after we mark the grief of Tisha B’Av? The Beit HaMikdash is still not rebuilt and our dreams of Geula, full redemption, have not been fulfilled. What has changed and what is the actual source of the comfort? In this week’s Parasha, when Moshe beseeches Hashem in a heart-rending way for permission to enter Israel, we see that Hashem does not relent: “Ascend to the top of the cliff and raise your eyes westward, northward, southward and eastward, and see with your eyes for you shall not cross the Jordan.”

(Devarim 3:27) Chazal state that Moshe asked 515 times to enter Israel, this verse being his final request. So why did Moshe stop asking? Had he finally accepted the decree? Looking closely at this verse, one notices the strangeness of the expression “and see with your eyes.” How else does one see, if not with one’s eyes? The redundancy is striking when we compare this verse with a similar verse in Parashat Pinchas: “And Hashem said to Moshe: Go up to this mountain of Avarim, and see the Land that I have given to the children of Israel. And you will indeed see it.” (Bamidbar 27:12) The Rogatchover Gaon (The Tzafnat Paneach) explains that the earlier verse – “you will indeed see it” – is a command for Moshe to survey the Land before he dies, while the second verse – “see with your eyes” – implies a much more personal command in which Hashem asks Moshe to face Eretz Yisrael (both literally and emotionally) and recognize his personal agony.

Vaetchanan

Moshe recalls that after defeating Sichon and Og in battle (see Devarim 2:31-3:11), he prayed to be allowed to enter the Land of Cana’an (see Rashi). G-d refused Moshe’s request, allowing him only to see the Land from afar. Moshe tells the people to observe the mitzvot, which will allow them to inherit the Land and he reminds them of the punishments they witnessed when the nation strayed after the idol of Pe’or (see Bemidbar 25:3). Point to Consider: What is an example of the prohibition of “not adding to the words” of the Torah? (see Rashi to 4:2)

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 4:5-40

Moshe tells the people that studying Torah

Sidra Summary

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – DEVARIM 3:23-4:4

The Gemara in Sotah 14, records an Aggadic interpretation of this scene, where Hashem recognizes that Moshe’s desire is a unique and passionate longing, one intertwined and interwoven with his spiritual development. Moshe did not need to eat the fruits or satisfy himself with the goodness of Eretz Yisrael, he just desired to fulfill the Mitzvot that can be fulfilled only in Eretz Yisrael. Hashem comforted him by saying that He would consider it as if Moshe had fulfilled them. Moshe, standing at the top of the cliff, looks upon Eretz Yisrael in its entirety and directly encounters the extent of his pain. Although seemingly counter-intuitive, this awareness is the very source of his comfort. After asking Hashem repeatedly to enter the Land, Moshe feared he had become numb; once he saw the Land, he realized that he still agonized over the punishment. That realization comforted Moshe, in the same way that years after losing a loved one, a person can find comfort in a Yahrzeit, in the awareness that one still identifies with the loss.

Sometimes, one’s worst fear is desensitization, and, ironically, knowing that there is still passion for a cause or feelings for a loss can bring comfort. Perhaps this is the spiritual underpinning of Shabbat Nachamu. It can be difficult to feel the pain of the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash after almost 2,000 years but on Tisha B’Av we try to connect – through Eicha, Kinot and learning about the calamities of Jewish history. The goal is “seeing with your eyes” – identifying within ourselves this feeling of catastrophe. When we finally experience the anguish and cry over the destruction, we can then truly find comfort in the acquisition of these emotions and channel that energy into the moments of simcha in our lives. As Chazal state, “Whoever mourns Jerusalem merits to see its joy,” indicating that whoever mourns the fall of Jerusalem not only merits seeing it in a state of redemption, but is also inherently comforted by the awareness of its loss.

and keeping the mitzvot will raise their stature in the eyes of the other nations. He warns them not to forget the historic revelation at Mount Sinai, in which G-d Himself spoke the Ten Commandments from the midst of the fire. Moshe adds that they must not make any idols, and warns them against worshipping the sun, the moon or the stars. He warns them that failure to heed this will result in exile from the Land. However, G-d will never abandon His nation; they will always be able to return to Him.

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 4:41-49

Moshe sets aside three cities to the east of the Jordan River. These cities are to provide refuge for a person who has killed accidentally and is fleeing from the relatives of the deceased.

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 5:1-5:18

Moshe again stresses that the people stood “face to face” with G-d at the time of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Moshe recalls the Ten Commandments:

1. Faith in G-d’s existence 2. Prohibition of idol worship 3. Prohibition of taking G-d’s Name in vain 4. Remembering Shabbat to keep it holy and refraining from ‘melacha’ (creative labours) 5. Honouring one’s parents 6. You shall not murder 7. You shall not commit adultery 8. You shall not steal 9. You shall not bear false testimony 10. You shall not covet what others have

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 5:19-6:3

Moshe recalls that the heads of the tribes and the elders asked him to relay G-d’s commandments to them; they feared they

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

would die if they continued to hear the commandments directly from G-d. G-d agreed to their request.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 6:4-25

The paragraph of Shema Yisrael is stated, in which the Jewish people are enjoined to believe in the Oneness of G-d, to love Him, to teach Torah, to wear tefilin and to affix mezuzot to their doorposts. Moshe warns the people not to allow the material attractions of the Land to cause them to neglect their service of G-d, nor to test Him like they did in the desert.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 7:1-11

When the Israelites come into the Land of Cana’an, they will successfully overcome seven great and mighty nations. Moshe warns them not to enter into a covenant with these nations, nor to intermarry with them. Israel is G-d’s chosen nation, whom He lovingly brought out of Egypt.

HAFTARAH NACHAMU

Taken from the book of Yeshaya, this is the first of the seven ‘haftarot of consolation’ read after Tisha B’Av. It starts with G-d’s instruction to the prophets to “Comfort, comfort My people” (Nachamu, nachamu, ami) and goes on to prophesy that G-d will return to Jerusalem and bring an end to the exile.

Parshat Vaetchanan: Who is Religious? BY GAVRIEL COHN This week’s Torah portion features the first paragraph of the Shema. One of its first commandments is to “love the Lord, your G-d.” For the Rambam, this commandment is far from simple to fulfil: “A person should love G-d with a very great and exceeding love until his soul is bound up in the love of G-d... he should constantly be obsessed with this love as if he is lovesick… As we are commanded “love G-d with all your heart and with all soul.” (Laws of Repentance, 10) The Rambam sets the bar of loving G-d almost absurdly high; nearly impossible, in fact, for most people to attain. As the Rambam notes: “Only very few have reached such love, and only after great preparation… It is the level of our Patriarch, Avraham; his service was only motivated by love.” How then can this commandment be addressed to us and how can we achieve it? Could we possibly recite the Shema twice daily with such passionate feeling, and “love G-d with all our heart”? Why

then recite it at all? All these questions rest, however, on a mistaken assumption. We tend to view being religious in terms of what commandments one keeps; that observing mitzvot in-themselves mean that we are somehow devout people; ticking heavenly boxes, so-to-speak, each time we perform a commandment. However, being religious, for the Rambam, instead means to be striving. When detailing Avraham’s early life, one action within the Torah passages stands out: that of journeying. Avraham “goes for himself to the Land of Canaan… Then Avraham journeyed on, travelling steadily towards the south…” He then “walked about the Land through its length and breadth.” Only finally, is Avraham told to “walk before Me [G-d] and be perfect.” Avraham was a man on a journey, embracing Monotheism after a quest of almost four decades. For the Rambam, the commandments were not

given to us simply to be ‘kept’ (although it goes without saying that they must be!), and we are not simply ‘religious’ for observing them. Rather they are to be used as tools to propel us forward, to aid us in perfecting ourselves, and eventually perhaps, even to attain a love of G-d. As the Rambam writes regarding reciting the Shema: “The first thing you must do [to attain a love of G-d] is this: Turn your thoughts away from everything while you read Shema [and focus on its message]. Do not content yourself with being devout when you read the first verse of Shema. When you have successfully practised this for many years, try when reading the Torah, to have all your heart and all your thought occupied with understanding what you read…. [Eventually] when you are engaged in the performance of religious duties, have your mind exclusively directed to what you are doing...” (Guide

As the Rambam notes: “Only very few have reached such love, and only after great preparation… It is the level of our Patriarch, Avraham; his service was only motivated by love.”

for the Perplexed, 3:51) The mitzvot are thus a slow, gradual aid for us to use on our journey, from childhood to old age, of improvement. Perhaps this message can be found within the Shema itself, which describes the mitzvot as creating an environment where one becomes more and more immersed in a journey towards loving G-d: “…And you shall teach them to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk on the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for ornaments between your eyes. And you shall inscribe them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.” In short, one must scale great heights in order reach Avraham’s love G-d. Yet, whenever we fulfil the mitzvot – reciting the Shema once every morning and again at night – we are, hopefully, taking a few small yet firm steps upwards, improving ourselves and growing. A truly religious act indeed. Gavriel Cohn is an informal educator at Immanuel College, Bushey. He has written a number of Torah articles for various publications. Chovat Halevavot Hilchot Shabbat How does one attain the ultimate reward in the World-to-Come? The author provides the conditions that a person should aim to fulfil (obviously, this is a lifetime’s work). The first is to conduct oneself in the manner in which the pious people traditionally did – to detach oneself from extra worldly pleasures. This means to remove the love of this world and in its place to build a storehouse of love for Hashem. Part of this will be to place one’s life entirely in the hands of Hashem and one’s entire sense of happiness will come from spiritual matters and from associating oneself with inspired people. Then, one can have faith that they will have enjoy the kindness of Hashem in the World-to-Come, akin to how previous generations of the righteous and pious earned their reward. If, however, one deeply engages in worldly pleasures, associates with people who are not interested in spirituality and places all their

efforts into gaining further pleasures in this world, then they are foolish to have faith that they will enjoy the World-to-Come. The indications of whether or not a person is on the ideal level is: How much of a good influence are they on others? How do they cope when G-d brings a difficulty on them? Are they able to perform even difficult Mitzvot – similar to Avraham was willing to offer up him own child if that would have been the will of Hashem? Are they on the spiritual level of Daniel was able to be thrown in the fire and how the famous ten martyrs (and many since them) who have willingly given up everything so as to remain steadfast to our faith? One who is able to accept all types of difficult circumstances with faith so long as they are able to serve Hashem and accepts whatever G-d sends their way, then they are able to await the reward of the righteous in the World-to-Come.

We continue the Muktzah series with miscellaneous Muktzah matters. If one has a key ring which holds a Muktzah item besides keys, for example, nail cutters, the bunch may be moved on Shabbat. But ideally one should remove the Muktzah item or remove the keys, prior to the onset of Shabbat. A bunch of key which has a Muktzah key on it, for example a car key, should ideally have the Muktzah item (or alternatively, as above, the non-Muktzah item, separated from it before Shabbat. In the circumstance that one neglected to separate them before Shabbat, the one should take the bunch by holding the non-Muktzah key, and not separate the Muktzah key. The reason for this is, if one takes the bunch whilst holding the non-Muktzah key, they are only doing “Tiltul min Ha’Tzad” – moving a Muktzah item indirectly, for the purpose of the use of a non-Muktzah item. This is preferable over moving a clearly Muktzah item, such as a car key. An empty pad of paper is Muktzah,

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

however, a part filled pad of paper will depend on whether or not the filled content is of value to the owner. If it is, then one can move the semi-filled pad in order to read the content. Ideally, one should avoid flicking through the empty pages if possible. If the filled content is of no importance at all, then one may not move the semi-filled pad of paper. As part of the general rule that for something to be considered Muktzah on Shabbat it must have been “set aside” at the onset of Shabbat, items of clothing or towels which were very wet at the onset of Shabbat may not be moved on Shabbat even if they dried during Shabbat. This is because during the twilight period which ushered in the Shabbat, the items were not suitable for use.

Vaetchanan BY RABBI RAYMOND APPLE

THE THREEFOLD TASK

Moses tells the people to listen to the commandments and do three things – to study, observe and do them (Deut. 5:1). The duty of studying the laws is discussed in the Gemara Kiddushin 40b. It asks which is more important, study or practice. It concludes that study is more important because it leads to practice. If you know what is required of you, your mind will lead you to carry out the task. Why then are there two words (ush’martem, “observe” and la’asotam, “do”) about carrying out the task? Is there a difference between observing and doing? It depends on how you understand the verbal root sh-m-r. Saadia Ga’on suggests that it means “to remember”, which means that we must not only study the laws but maintain them mentally. However, if we interpret the verb as “protect”, that makes a great difference. We must not let the law be whittled away or be squeezed dry of meaning. The opening chapter of Pir’kei Avot tells us to make a fence around the Torah.

BODY & SOUL

The Torah portion begins with Moses speaking. He says Va’et’channan el HaShem – “I besought the L-rd” (Deut. 3:28). The verb he uses is Hitpa’el, reflexive. The Hitpa’el is used in such phrases as “I wash

myself”, “I dress myself”. In time of prayer, it suggests that the person (in this case Moses) does not stand or sit politely and quietly, and piously concentrate on his words and thoughts. It indicates that the whole person should be engaged in prayer, both body and soul. One of the best known Jewish prayer customs – shockling or swaying – is an illustration of this notion. It derives from the passage in the Psalms, kol atzmotai tomar’na, “All my bones speak out” (35:10). Samson Raphael Hirsch tells us that the words mean, “Every part of me shall speak”.

SHEMA – THE POLEMICAL PRAYER

By the time of the Second Temple it was the accepted practice to say the Shema twice daily, evening and morning. Special importance was attached to the first line, with its affirmation of G-d and His Oneness. This line occurred and recurred on its own in many places, which, according to Jacob Mann, was motivated by polemical reasons. In Babylon it was almost surreptitiously inserted in the early morning passage, L’olam yehei adam, because Zoroastrianism objected to the unity of G-d. It was quietly inserted in the Kedushah for Shabbat and festivals because the full Shema was considered too blatant. When the Torah was taken out of the Ark on Shabbat and festivals, the Shema was a proud Jewish answer to Christianity.

I NEED SOME BOOTS

The Alenu prayer contains a verse from this week’s portion, ”Know therefore this day and take it to heart that the Lord is G-d in heaven above and on the earth beneath: there is no other” (Deut. 4:39). Thinking of this verse, a Chassidic teacher, Rabbi Simchah Bunim, told the following parable. A son rebelled against his father, the king, and was sent into exile. After some time the king calmed down and commanded his messengers to find the young man and look after him. Eventually a messenger found him, barefoot and dressed in rags, drinking and dancing in a tavern. The messenger said, “I have been sent by the king to find you and give you whatever you need. What can I do for you?” The young man burst into tears and said, “I really need some warm clothes and a pair of boots – that would keep me going!” What a pity, said Rabbi Simchah Bunim; the boy could have said, “I would love to see my father again and to be brought back home” – but all he could think of were boots and shirts and trousers. That’s how it is with us – we concern ourselves with the little material things and forget about coming back to G-d and receiving the Divine favour again… The rabbi was, however, more than a preacher and admonisher. He added, “When man is estranged from G-d, G-d too

is estranged from man.” One might almost say that without His creature, man, G-d is, as it were, not G-d. A king is no king without subjects; a teacher is not a teacher without pupils; a doctor is not a doctor without patients. G-d needs man – not merely because, in the words of a High Holyday poem, v’avita t’hillah, “You desire praise” – but because G-d’s nature is to be a loving parent, and without children there cannot be a parent. It is not good for man to be in exile from G-d; nor is it good for the Divine Presence, the Sh’chinah, to be in exile from man. Parshat Vaetchanan continues on the theme of Moshe telling over the story of the Jews’ travels through the Midbar. He opens by telling of the 515 prayers he recited and how he begged to be granted entry to the Holy Land; however, he was told that he was not going to be allowed to enter. The Jewish People were going to enter and Moshe warned them that if they enter Eretz Yisrael and begin serving idols, they will be sent out of the land and scattered around the world. Unfortunately, this came true, as we mentioned on Tisha B’av – we were sent out of the Holy Land and sent around the world. However, all is not lost and we can beg Hashem to take us out of exile and bring the redemption.

Moshe reminds the Jewish people how they must get rid of idols in the Holy Land and that they should remember how great a nation they are to whom Hashem Himself appeared! He told over the ten commandments we were given at Mount Sinai. The famous passage of Shema which we say each day and night, is taught in this week’s Sidra, with its Mitzvot such as loving Hashem, learning Torah and wearing Tefillin and placing Mezuzot on our doorposts. We are not chosen as the largest nation; plenty nations have plenty more people than us. We were chosen due to the love the Hashem has for our ancestors and His commitment to fulfilling the promises of bringing us to the Holy Land.

“I

’m boiling,” Rivki moaned. The sun was beating down. The heat was everywhere. In the car, at school, at home. Everything she touched was hot, even the tap water was lukewarm. “It is pretty hot today,” Ima agreed. “Now please go and get dressed, we will be leaving soon. We have to go out to get Yehudis some new shoes. Then maybe we can go to the park afterwards.” “I want to wear this” Rivki had run out and brought back a short-sleeved t-shirt. “Honey, you can’t wear that. I know it’s so hot outside, but it’s not tznius. Please go and choose something else.” Rivki went back to her room and reluctantly chose a long-sleeved dress to wear. “Well done, that’s much better,” said Ima. “You are doing a big mitzva.” But Rivki wasn’t very happy. Later that day Ima took Rivki to the park. Rivki was happy to see her friends there, but she noticed that they weren’t wearing long sleeves like her, only short ones. On the way home, she said to Ima “It’s so unfair. Why do those girls get to

Long or short? wear short sleeves and I don’t?” Ima put her arm around Rivki and said “Never forget, you are a Bas Melech, a daughter of The King, Hashem. This means that you are really a princess! Princesses behave with dignity and modesty; they dress in a way that represents the status of who they are. Hashem cares about it so much that

He gave us this amazing mitzva so that when we keep tznius we are rewarded, even if it feels a bit uncomfortable sometimes.” Although Rivki mostly understood what her Ima was saying, Rivki was still feeling a bit grumpy that night when she called her grandparents to wish them a good shabbos. Her grandpa asked why

she was not feeling so happy. Rivki explained that she really wanted to wear short-sleeved tops like her friends. “You know in Morocco and other very hot countries” her grandfather said thoughtfully “they don’t wear short sleeves, they actually wear long sleeves, and it is much hotter there than here.” “Really?” Rivki replied in surprise. “How come?” “Well, although you would think that short sleeves keeps you cooler, when you are out in the sun it is so important to avoid sunburn and heatstroke. Ladies wear something called a kaftan, which is a type of long flowing dress with long sleeves.” After putting the phone down Rivki thought very hard. It was so interesting to hear what her grandfather had said. She had never thought that long sleeves might actually be protecting her from the sun! As Ima tucked Rivki up in bed that night. Rivki said “Ima, thank you for teaching me about tznius. I didn’t realise that it was so important. I will try to choose different outfits from now on.” Ima smiled and hugged Rivki “You are a wonderful princess to Hashem, to me and to Daddy too.”

Vaetchanan

In a nutshell Parshat Va’etchanan is a continuation of Moshe relating the highlights – and low points – of the Jewish people’s journey through the desert over the 40 years. He opens by relating the 515 prayers that he said in order to be granted entry into the Holy Land, to no avail. Hashem had decreed that he would not be able to enter the land but instead appoint Yehoshua as his successor. Moshe reminds the nation how they must be very careful to remove all vestige of idol worship from the holy land and certainly not manufacture nor own and forms that may be associated with idol worship. We are also introduced to the concept of not adding or subtracting from Mitzvot. When Jewish people keep to the Torah and perform its Mitzvot the nations of the world admire them and exclaim how wise and understanding this people are. Who truly is so great – explained Moshe – a nation which Hashem is close to whenever we cry out to Him? We are warned that if we get too used to the Holy

Land and begin serving idols, then Hashem will have us expelled from the Holy Land and scattered around the world. This unfortunately came true and throughout our close to 2000 years in exile, we have been scattered all over the world. Thankfully, wherever we have been there have been those who remained loyal to our Torah, which itself has brought much flavour to our religious practice, with Jews from Argentina able to relate to the same Torah as Jews from Algeria, Jews from Ireland able to compare notes with Jews from Iraq and Jews from Canada bringing a certain different flavour to Mitzvah observance than Jews from China. Moshe reviews the Ten Commandments and reminds the Jewish people how special they are – “Has any other nation heard Hashem Himself talk to them?” It was not an individual “prophecy” that we are told to believe; it was an entire nation who heard Hashem communicate with us and with Moshe. We are warned to never forget the day on which we all stood at Har Sinai to receive the Torah.

Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.

As we learned in a previous Sidra, there were to be cities of refuge set aside for one who killed unintentionally (G-d forbid). Although Moshe himself was not going to be entering the Holy Land he was still keen to fulfil a Mitzvah and therefore separated three cities on the east of the Jordan to be designated for this purpose. The Parsha contains the first passage of our declaration of faith – Shema Yisrael and Ve’ahavta. It is noteworthy how many Mitzvot are contained in this relatively small section of the Torah which we are privileged to read twice a day! Moshe reminds the Jewish people – Hashem did not choose you over other nations due to your strength in number – there are plenty nations with far more people. Rather, you were chosen from the love Hashem has for you and in keeping with His promise to our forefathers to redeem you from Egypt. The Parsha ends with another fundamental principle of Judaism – Hashem rewards those who are loyal to Him and, sadly, punishes those who are not.

TOKYO 2020

Team Israel set for Tokyo Olympics

Israel’s Olympic bound baseball squad

BY DAVID SAFFER Team Israel has a 90-strong squad set to make its mark at the Tokyo Olympics. Israel’s biggest delegation, 47 competed in Rio in 2016, includes 55 men and 35 women across 15 sports and they have a number of medal prospects among 11,000 plus athletes competing for 339 different gold medals in a record 33 sports. Twelve months on from the scheduled summer games postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Israel makes its bow in surfing, archery and equestrian. They are also represented at baseball, one of five sports making its Olympic debut, the others

being karate, skateboard, sports climbing and surfing. The Paralympic Games is held two weeks after the start of the Olympics when 28 athletes have Olympic dreams. Israel is competing at its 17th summer games going back to Helsinki 1952 up to Rio four years ago. Israel boycotted the 1980 Moscow but any Olympics cannot be mentioned without recalling the 1972 Games when eight Black September Palestinian terrorists held hostage and murdered 11 Israeli athletes in Munich. The incident blighted the Games and all future Israel squads continue their legacy. Former President Reuven Rivlin was on

hand as Team Israel jetted off to Tokyo earlier this month. Among dignitaries at Rivlin’s Residence were Ilana Romano and Anki Spitzer, widows of Yossef Romano and Andre Spitzer, who were among those massacred almost five decades ago in an incident that shocked the world. Japanese Ambassador Koichi Mizushima, Igal Carmi, Israel Olympic Committee chairman and Yehoshua Dekel, National Paralympic Committee national president were also present to meet the Israeli delegation at a special ceremony. Rivlin told Olympic and Paralympic delegations they had been chosen as they

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

were the “best of the best” to compete at the “greatest, oldest and most important of international sporting competitions”. Israel’s official uniform for the opening and closing ceremonies is inspired by the Star of David designed Israeli fashion house Castro as they have for the past six Olympics. When it comes to genuine medal prospects Sagi Muki is reigning Judo World Champion in the 81kg weight class. The Netanya athlete won the World Championships in Tokyo two years ago and is among the favourites for gold. This Olympics hosts the first Judo team event and Israel will participate.

22 JULY 2021 Ukrainian-born Peter Paltchik also has a medal shot in the 100KG category. Paltchik’s family immigrated to Israel when he was 9 months old and settled in Rishon Le’Zion. Rhythmic gymnast Linoy Ashram has a shot at glory and there are high hopes for Katy Spychakov in sailing for the RS X category after scooping silver at the 2021 World Championships in Cadiz, Spain. Teen swimming sensation Anastasia Gorbenko participates in the 100 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 100 meter breaststroke and 200 meter individual medley. Gorbenko won gold at the 2020 European Championship in Budapest but this is a step up, however taking on four events marks her as a special Olympian and someone to watch. On the track Lonah Chemtai Salpeter won gold at the 10,000 meters 2018 European Championships in Berlin and gold in the World marathon majors in Tokyo last year. This summer she lines up in the 5000 meters, 10,000 meters and marathon, which is arguably her best chance of a podium finish. Gymnast Alexander Shatilov will be at his fourth Olympic games whilst the Baseball team made history by qualifying for the Olympics when they won the Europe/Africa Qualifier in Italy in September 2019, defeating South Africa 11-1 at Parma’s Nino Cavalli Stadium in the key qualifying game. The first Israeli team sport to qualify for an Olympics since the national football side participated at the 1976 Montreal games, Team Israel is one of six teams at the baseball competition. During the Italian qualifiers, Israel defeated Spain, Italy and European champions Netherlands before a setback against the Czech Republic. Boasting a 3-1 tournament record, Israel faced South Africa for Olympic qualification. And in a stunning display, they held the South Africans to six scoreless innings. Israel sealed the win with an eighth inning three-run home run by Danny Valencia. Shlomo Lipetz closed out the game signalling euphoric celebrations. The squad has a core of Israeli-born

Five-time Paralympic medalist Yekutiel Gershoni passed away last week. An acclaimed IDF veteran, historian and athlete, Gershoni received life changing injuries in a horrific bomb blast in the Jordan Valley in 1969 whilst serving in the IDF in the Combat Engineering Corps. The explosion, rather than destroy his life, defined him as an inspiration to the nation. Gershoni had responded to terrorists placing explosives close to the Jordanian border. A brigade doctor was close by and saved his life but it would be two weeks until he was told the extent of his injuries when a third bomb exploded in his hands. Gershoni had both arms amputated, his eyesight and hearing were also impaired. Within 12 months, Gershoni began an outstanding academic career at the Department of Middle Eastern and African History at Tel Aviv University, completing two degrees, and a PhD at the Jerusalem’s

Hebrew University in 1982. Appointed an Associate Professor at the Middle Eastern and African History department in 1995, Gershoni headed the

department from 2002-4. President for the International Association for Liberian Studies in 2001, he also lectured at Stanford, Boston and Indiana universities. Retiring in 2008, two years later he received an honorary doctorate from Ben-Gurion University. Regarding his sporting prowess, Gershoni took part in four Paralympic Games. At the 1980 Arnhem Games in the Netherlands, Gershoni starred for Israel, winning silver medals in the 100, 400 and 1,500 meter along with long jump bronze. Four years later in New York and Stoke Mandeville he claimed 5,000 metre bronze. Gershoni’s family told media outlets his death was unexpected and he had recently finished writing a book. “There are few people who succeed in one sphere, he has succeeded and excelled in several,” they reportedly said. Gershoni was born in Rishon LeZion in 1943, his wife, three sons and nine grandchildren survive him.
