Tzipi to host Israel 75 celebrations

Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely hosts the embassy’s celebrations for Israel’s 75th Independence Day next week.

Parliamentarians, diplomats and community leaders will gather for the gala event in central London.

The embassy has also produced a special film about Israel that will be on display at a location for commuters and tourists to view.

Since 1948, Israel has enjoyed many successes and overcome numerous challenges. Ambassador Hotovely recalls summer holidays as a child on a northern kibbutz in the mid-1980s.

“It was a time when there was a flavour of socialism in the country,” she said. “Since the mid-80s there was a big shift towards a

free market economy. The world now looks at Israel as a role model in many fields in cluding renewable energy. Israel has also become a leader in water solutions.”

The burgeoning Abraham Accords with Arab nations has seen a global reaction.

“Growing up, I could not im agine travelling to an Arab coun try,” Ambassador Hotovely ex plained. “I was a baby when the peace agreement with Egypt was signed and travelling in the Israeli desert when we celebrated 40 years peace. Today, half a million Is raelis have visited Du bai and 100,000 have gone to Morocco. The

fact that we have peace agreements with Egypt, Jordan and gulf countries is amazing. Prime Minister Netanyahu wants to extend agreements to more countries which is phenomenal.”

She added: “I grew up living with the idea that Israel was this small country surrounded by enemies. We still have enemies, but less. Israel has flourishing diplomatic relations with many countries around the world. As a deputy Foreign Minister, I’ve seen how delegations around the world admire Israel.”

Throughout Israel’s 75 years of independence there have been wars with enemies. Inaccurate reporting of conflicts in sections of the media is an ongoing frustration for diplomats.

Ambassador Hotovely observed: “We want to live in peace. The IDF tries its best to ensure no innocent people get killed. We care so much about human life, but deal with enemies who don’t care about their own children, they use them as human shields. This is not a cliché. They launch rockets from schools and religious sites. There is the moral gap between terror organisations we deal with and Israel as a democracy. It is very frustrating.

“But we are on the front line. We never hesitate to bring the facts of a story to the media. We go on television and radio to send out factual stories about what we face as a democratic state. We try to keep Israeli’s issues high on the agenda in the UK.”

She added: “Every time there is a headline that does not reflect the truth, we want to change it. Last year at Passover there was a horrific terror attack at a Tel Aviv bar where

innocent people were killed. I was driving with my family next to where the terror attack happened and remember getting a phone call from an embassy spokesperson saying, a major broadcaster’s headline is, ‘Israelis kill an Arab’, which was the terrorist. We worked hard to ensure the media got the correct version.”

The recent terror attack murder of Rabbi Leo Dee’s wife and daughters resonated in Israeli embassies around the world. Ambassador Hotovely said: “When Rabbi Dee delivered his press conference it made us all realise Israel has a strong emotional and human story to tell. I rang to thank him for the service he did for Israel when the media does not cover a story properly. Three beautiful women were killed just for being Jewish, I then heard Rabbi Dee speak. It meant a lot to us. He was in the front line explaining the Israeli story.

“We still have a lot of work to do. It’s important the UK Jewish community does not

get frustrated. Writing to the BBC and TV stations, posting on social media makes a difference. It is important to be proactive whenever a story is inaccurate. People can see the beauty of Israel.”

Antisemitism continues to be a major problem and the Ambassador has experienced it first hand when visiting a number of universities.

Israeli security and local police ensure demonstrations do not become violent.

Ambassador Hotovely observed: “I enjoy meeting young people but there have been demonstrations. There is an issue, I need a lot of protection when I go to speak on campuses.

“More people are feeling uncomfortable from antisemitic attacks according to CST so we have to open our eyes that it is happening in the UK. The British government is aware of it, the Home Office is on top of matters and I’m sure they will do everything they can to fight antisemitism. It’s a policing and educational issue. I was very happy to hear from officials about teaching ‘modern’ antisemitism.

People are aware of right wing antisemitism and have a certain framework how

they see antisemitism. When people chant ‘Palestine is free’ and the ‘Jewish State does not have a right to exist’, it’s a radical version of antisemitism. There are many things that can be done on an educational side.”

Ambassador Hotovely is the face of the Israeli embassy but a team behind her makes sure goals are reached.

“We are a big team, one of Israel’s five big embassies in the world,” she explained.

“Every relationship has a number of pillars. We have a strategic dialogue in the UK, as we have with the United States. The Iranian issue and intelligence cooperation are top priorities. The UK is our fourth largest trade partner in the world. Both sides want to create a modern trade deal based on technology and services. Health issues are also important and we are helping with Israeli technology to help the NHS.”

Regarding Iran, Israel’s emissary said: “Iran is the biggest obstacle to peace in the Middle East. Even the latest conflict with Islamic Jihad was the direct hand of Iranian leaders. Over 1,000 rockets were fired into Israeli cities. We expect the international community to use more sanctions to create creditable economic pressure and a military threat.”

Ambassador Hotovely’s post in the UK ends during the summer of 2024.

She is determined to continue traveling throughout the UK and outreach more to the younger generation.

Looking ahead, she said: “Iran is a top priority and the way the British government works with alliances around the world. I really hope we will manage to make serious progress in the trade deal and for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to visit Israel. I want to see senior British representatives in Jerusalem this year and if King Charles III would make a Royal visit that would also be wonderful!”

Security Cabinet attends 'Firm Hand' exercise

Israel’s Security Cabinet attended a 'Firm Hand' military multi-front campaign exercise at IDF command centre in Tel Aviv.

Tests evaluate the ability of the IDF to fight on fronts simultaneously with an emphasis on the northern border.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chaired the meeting.

“The reality in our region is changing rapidly,” he said. “We are not stagnating. We are adapting our combat doctrine and our possibilities for action in keeping with these changes and our goals.

“We are committed to acting against the Iranian nuclear program, against missile attacks on the State of Israel and against the possibility of fronts becoming linked. This requires us to evaluate many of the main decisions the Security Cabinet and the Government would need to make together with the security establishment, the IDF and other security elements. This is the goal of the exercise. We are certain that we can deal with every threat by ourselves, and also by other means.”

Netanyahu and Security Cabinet ministers as part of the Security Cabinet's role in the exercise received briefings on every scenario as they would in a combat campaign in real time.

During the simulations the importance of 'Firm Hand' for emergencies was demonstrated.

Netanyahu was visiting IDF operational headquarters at the Kirya for the first time during the 'Firm Hand' exercise.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, IDF Chiefof-Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, Netanyahu’s Chief of Staff Tzachi Braverman and Maj.-Gen. Avi Gil also attended.

He noted: “We are working around the clock to safeguard the security superiority of the State of Israel. In this exercise, which simulates a large-scale attack, the IDF, including Air Force, demonstrated its capabilities are unlimited.”

The National Jewish Assembly has expressed “deep concern” over recent comments made by Massoud Shadjareh, Chair of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, during a protest outside the Islamic Centre of England in London's Maida Vale.

Shadjareh blamed the "papers" of "Zionist institutions" for the Charity Commission's decision to open a statutory inquiry into ICE. For NJA, this raised serious concerns about the promotion of divisive rhetoric and conspiracy theories.

Gallant thanked Kurilla for the importance of US involvement in stability and a ‘circle of peace’ in the Middle East. He presented IDF achievements in the recent Operation Shield and Arrow actions in Gaza.

The Charity Commission's decision to launch the inquiry is based on legitimate concerns regarding the mosque's alleged links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the need to ensure compliance with clear and stringent charity regulations.

“We strongly believe in the importance of open dialogue and respectful exchange of ideas. Shadjareh's comments perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to the climate of division and animosity. It is essential leaders within the community promote responsible and constructive discourse, rather than resorting to baseless accusations and conspiracy theories.”

Cohen visits Philippines

Eli Cohen is the first Foreign Minister to visit the Philippines in 56 years.

Cohen met Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo during the landmark visit to Manila.

Discussions focused on bilateral relations and opening the Saudi-Oman corridor for flights from Israel.

“Israel and the Jewish people have a historical debt to the Philippines for saving 1,300 Jews during the Holocaust and being the only Asian country to support the establishment of Israel on November 29, 1947," Cohen reportedly said. He added: “The visit to the Philippines will strengthen Israel's diplomatic ties and presence in East Asia, alongside the visit to India last month. Strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the countries will open doors for Israel in other countries in the region and bring us new economic opportunities.”

Cohen hopes to establish maritime and land routes between Asia and Europe through the Middle East and Israel to reduce shipping costs.

He inaugurated a new wing of the Israeli Embassy in Manila and met the local Jewish community.

Cohen also met Filipino and Israeli companies as part of the Israel-Philippines Business Forum.

Golda Meir in 1962 and Abba Eban five years later are the other Israeli foreign ministers to officially travel to the Philippines.

Israel’s Air Drone initiative

Israel’s National Air Drone Initiative has completed flight tests across Israel.

The high-tech project, operating since 2019. is a partnership led by the Ministry of Transportation, Israel Innovation Authority, Ayalon Highways Ltd and Civil Aviation Authority.

The goal is to aid traffic congestion on Israel's roads. Over 60 million shekels is being invested in the next two years. Test flights will be conducted on a large number of aircraft to transport people and cargo.

The Ministry of Transportation is working to strengthen Israel's position as a global development center for vehicle and transportation technologies including aerial transportation.

Minister of Transportation, Brig. Gen. (Res) Miri Regev said: “This is the first initiative of its kind in the world for a multidisciplinary examination of new technologies. The collaborative project examines all aspects in the commercial operation of drones as an additional tool to deal with congestion. This is an intriguing and challenging world with unlimited possibilities. We will do everything to ensure that Israel is at the forefront of global research and development on land, air and sea.”

Dror Bin, CEO of the Innovation Authority described the experiment as an important milestone.

“The significance of these demonstrations

lies in creating a regulatory sandbox that allows relevant stakeholders to have practical experience before establishing a regulatory infrastructure that enables a wider economically viable model,” he said.

Orly Stern, CEO of Ayalon Highways, added, “The project is aimed at providing a variety of technological solutions to alleviate road congestion. The aircrafts being tested will be able to bypass traffic jams by removing cars and trucks from the roads in conjunction with air traffic management systems. This will create a variety of air transportation options for regular and emergency cargo transfers.”

The first phase of the drone initiative took place 2019 and in 2022 focused on small cargo flights.

The current phase increases payload and range for heavier cargo and passengers.

A ‘system of aerial routes in the skies’ is being developed for continuous flight operations, allowing multiple drones including healthcare, commerce, security and safety.

Over 19,000 sorties have been conducted in urban and rural areas. In the next two years, companies will conduct flights each month covering up to 150 km carrying heavier payloads.

The initiative operates in collaboration with the Israeli Air Force and local municipalities. Ayalon Highways will continue to serve as the pilot site for demonstrations.

Eleven drone operating companies participated in recent tests flying over varying distances and cargo loads. They included Airways Drones Ltd, F.T. Aerial Solutions Ltd, Elsight, AGL, Air Taxi Israel (ATI), Down Wind, BROOK, Highlander Aviation, Cando Drones and RoboTiCan.

IDF investigate Egyptian border terror attack

establishing ‘troop conduct’ during the attack including what radio checks took place and IAF response time.

Israel dismissed Egypt’s initial statement that Salah was a ‘rogue officer’ who crossed the border into Israel “chasing drug smugglers” when a “gun battle ensued”.

The IDF believe Salah acted out of religious motives as he had the Quran, combat knives and an assault rifle.

The three IDF officers served in the light infantry Bardelas and Caracal battalion guarding the Egyptian border, known for drug smuggling. Operational activities are carried nightly in the area.

It appears Salah walked from his base in Egypt to the border fence and entered through an emergency gate used by IDF soldiers.

IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari told a press briefing an investigation was looking at sensors at the border fence where Salah entered Israel.

According to the IDF, the soldiers were killed around 6:30am Shabbat morning. The last communication was 4:15am. Their bodies weren’t discovered until 9:00am at a guards’ shift change.

A manhunt followed. A surveillance drone located Salah who killed Ilouz before being shot.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit released a statement on Shabbat afternoon following the murders.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded an “exhaustive” investigation with Egypt into the murders of three IDF soldiers last Saturday at the Israel-Egypt border.

Sergeant Lia Ben Nun, 19 of Rishon L’Tzion and Staff Sgt. Ori Yitzhak Iluz, 20, of Tzfat were killed in in the terror attack guarding the Harif military base.

Staff Sgt. Ohad Dahan, 20, of Ofakim was shot by the terrorist during the manhunt.

Egyptian border policeman Mohamed Salah was named as the terrorist behind the triple murders on Monday.

Thousands of mourners attended the funerals of Ben-Nun in Rishon Lezion, Dahan in Ofakim and Iluz in Tzfat on Sunday.

Ben-Nun was hailed as a “role model for the unit”, Dahan showed “valour and dedication” in every mission. Ilouz was described as an “admired” commander by

his commanding officer.

Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has instructed the IDF to complete its investigation within a week. The investigation includes cooperation of the Egyptian army.

Netanyahu spoke with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who expressed his deepest condolences over the incident, on Tuesday. Both are committed to a joint investigation and strengthening security cooperation.

Netanyahu told his weekly Cabinet meeting: “Israel has conveyed a clear message to the Egyptian government. We expect that the joint investigation will be exhaustive and thorough. We will draw all the necessary conclusions regarding our actions along the Israeli-Egyptian border. While this fence, which was built in 2013, blocked the flood of illegal migrants into Israel, there is still smuggling, and terrorists make periodic attempts to cross the fence

and attack our forces. We will reinvigorate the procedures to minimise smuggling and ensure tragic attacks such as these do not recur.”

Netanyahu commended IDF forces for eliminating the terrorist following a short manhunt.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has spoken with Egyptian Defence Minister Mohamed Zaki.

He said: “I emphasised the importance of our cooperation in the investigation. We agreed to work together to prevent terrorism along our border and to further strengthen Defence ties between our countries.”

Maj. Gen. Nimrod Aloni of the IDF’s Depth Corps is heading an IDF team examining the “operational and systemic” defence of peaceful borders.

The National Jewish Assembly in collaboration with the West Midlands Friends of Israel, North West Friends of Israel, North London Friends of Israel and Glasgow Friends of Israel has achieved success in its email writing campaign urging venues to reconsider hosting Roger Waters' performances. Over 17,000 emails have been sent to venues and numbers continue to rise rapidly. NJA's campaign has not gone unnoticed. Several local councils and venues have directly responded to concerns expressed by

the Jewish community.

Of note, the leader of Birmingham Council and cabinet members wrote to The NEC Group, owners of the Utilita Arena, expressing deep concerns and sought assurances ahead of Waters' recent Birmingham concert.

Council leaders urged the Chief Executive of The NEC Group to ensure elements of Waters' previous show, which included antisemitic tropes and the appearance of an outfit described as ‘Nazi in appearance’,

were not replicated at the Birmingham concert.

A spokesman said: “Their commitment to promoting inclusivity and combating antisemitism is evident in their proactive approach to addressing the community's concerns. Unfortunately, despite the clear calls for sensitivity and respect, Waters chose to persist with his offensive and antisemitic stunts.”

It stated: “In the early morning hours, a female soldier and a male soldier of the IDF were killed by gunfire from a terrorist while securing a military post in the area of the Paran Brigade on the border with Egypt. Subsequently, additional forces arrived at the border and conducted searches in the area. During the afternoon hours, during the searches, the force identified the same terrorist inside Israeli territory, and an exchange of fire ensued between him and the troops. The soldiers and commanders engaged, fired, and neutralised the terrorist. During the exchange of fire, an IDF soldier was killed, and another soldier sustained minor injuries.

“The terrorist was an Egyptian policeman. An investigation is being conducted in close cooperation with the Egyptian army. IDF forces continue to conduct searches in the area in order to eliminate the presence of any additional terrorists.”

The border is in a mountainous area of the 80th Regional Division, which controls 200km of the border with Sinai. The IDF has boosted forces to halt drug smuggling in the past year. Fire exchanges on the Egyptian side are commonplace.

Khan joins rabbis for O2 to act on Waters gig

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has expressed concern about former Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters appearing at the O2 Arena this week.

Community rabbis and leaders also called on the O2 to reconsider his gigs on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Campaign Against Antisemitism has written to Manchester’s AO Arena where Waters closes the UK leg this weekend. They have also contacted a cinema chain for screenings of Waters’ film to be cancelled.

Waters, 79, is in the midst of his farewell This Is Not A Drill European and South American 2023 tour. In October and November, Waters is scheduled to perform across Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru before finishing in Costa Rica, Columbia and Ecuador in December.

Growing pressure follows CAA launching a petition to ban Waters from performing at music venues following a controversial concert in Berlin last month when he wore what appears to be a Nazi SS-style uniform.

Over 3,350 people have signed CAA’s petition, which notes Waters has a ‘long history of baiting Jews’. An initial target of 500 signatories was reached in days and has been revised to 5,000.

A spokesperson for Mayor Khan said: “The Mayor’s team have recently met with AEG Europe, the O2 arena venue operator, to express the concerns and issues raised by the Jewish community.”

They added: “The Mayor fully understands the significant concerns from within the Jewish community and condemns the use of antisemitism imagery.”

During a Birmingham concert at Utilita Arena last week, Waters reportedly claimed: “They’re trying to cancel me like they cancelled Jeremy Corbyn and Julian Assange.” He added: “I will not be cancelled.”

Gideon Falter, Campaign Against Antisemitism CEO, reportedly told LBC radio: “He has made a point in years past of flying a pig-shaped inflatable bloom with the Star of David on it over his concerts, he's somebody who is constantly comparing Israelis, Nazis and the lie. He seems to go out of his way to say things which are basically baiting the Jewish community, and constantly goading us. It's really troubling to see somebody like that, who uses his platform for these purposes to get red-carpet treatment.”

CAA added that Waters had a penchant for breaching the International Definition of Antisemitism and long history of baiting Jews that had attracted the attention of former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke. “Artistic freedom does not justify hate,” a spokesman noted.

Campaign Against Antisemitism has blasted the BBC for hosting TikTok prankster Mizzy on its Newsnight programme last week.

Mizzy, real name Bacari-Bronze O’Garro, was quizzed over videos, including a number harassing Jewish people, on the BBC programme.

The decision however backfired following his mocking antics towards the hosts.

Police will pass findings to the public prosecutor after allegations are reviewed.

Jewish protesters showed contempt to Waters, who denies accusations of antisemitism, at his Frankfurt concert by singing Am Yisroel Chai.

Jewish and civil rights groups protested outside the Festhalle venue where over 3,000 Jews were beaten by the Nazis at the Festhalle site in 1938 and later sent to concentration camps.

“Against this historical background, the concert should not have taken place under any circumstances,” said Sacha Stawski of the Frankfurt Jewish community.

Bury South Labour MP Christian Wakeford last week called for Waters to be banned from performing in Manchester.

Commons leader Penny Mordaunt confirmed the Home Office would listen to concerns.

O’Garro wore a prison tag on the show following his release on bail over alleged breaches of criminal behaviour. In a brazen display of arrogance Mizzi snatched host Kirsty Ward’s water and thanked the BBC for making him an “established prankster”. “I’m just living my life at the end of the day,” he said.

CAA questioned why interviews were not conducted with police or the Crown Prosecution Service following a recent court case. They are writing to the broadcaster.

O’Garro, who denies specifically targeting Jewish people, was fined £365 at Thames Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice.

It is understood a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order was placed on him by Judge Charlotte Crangle. Mizzi must comply with restrictions on his social media output, not trespass or visit Westfields Stratford City shopping centre. Mizzi reportedly breached the order and was arrested in two days.

A CAA spokesperson said: “The prankster known as Mizzy is a criminal who built a modest following by harassing Jews and other locals. The BBC would have done better to have interviewed the police or CPS and questioned why it took so long to charge him, waiting until he expanded his campaign beyond the Jewish community. By giving him a megaphone, the BBC is legitimating his unlawful antics and

encouraging other wannabe celebrities to do the same.”

Social media videos include O’Garro entering a family home, jumping on an Orthodox Jewish man and asking a passer-by if he 'wants to die'.

After CAA reported O’Garro’s arrest for “assaulting a member of the Jewish community” in January, TikTok removed a number of Mizzi’s accounts.

A police statement noted the arrest followed Shomrim neighbourhood watch notifying police.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway of Central East Command Unit, responsible for policing Hackney and Tower Hamlets, said: “I do not underestimate the widespread upset, distress and concern that these videos caused. Some people have referred to these as ‘prank’ videos, but I hope that this significant development demonstrates just how seriously we have been taking this investigation since this footage began circulating online. A number of these videos were produced, impacting on many different people and our investigation remains ongoing as we seek to build a strong picture of both the activity featured in the footage and impact on the public.”

Fundraiser for Dan

Friends of Daniel Weston, 46, from Borehamwood, who has bravely fought bowel cancer for over three years, are raising funds for his family.

A recent hospital visit brought the devastating news to the family that Daniel has liver and kidney failure and he doesn’t have long left to live.

A crowdfunding campaign set up by Ronit Raman has exceeded its original £18,000 target to support Daniel’s wife Hayley, daughter Leia, aged six, and eight-yearold son Raphael.

Over £21,000 has been raised for a new target of £50,000.

Raman started the campaign to reassure Dan that Hayley won’t have to worry about money.

He wrote: “Many of you have been asking me how you can help, as the family want

their privacy right now to share their last few days together, if you would like to donate to this page I know anything will be gratefully received at such a tough time.” Hayley posted a response on the Just Giving page.

She said: Dan and I are overwhelmed with the incredible love and support everyone has shown, from the bottom of our hearts we thank each and everyone of you for your kindness and generosity.”

Over 400 people have donated to this very worthy and well meant cause, a number anonymously. Heartfelt comments have been made to Daniel in messages.

The chairman of the State Camp and former minister of defence, Knesset member Benny Gantz, was a guest Monday at the Jerusalem Post conference in New York, and made it clear that “if the time comes when we have to act against Iran, the government will receive full backing for any determined, proper and responsible action to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.”

“These days, we are witnessing the development of a real threat of a nuclear Iran on our doorstep,” Gantz said at the beginning of his remarks. “A nuclear Iran will first of all become a global threat, which will endanger the stability of the Middle East and affect the entire world. We are in decisive moments. The State of Israel will not be able to allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. Precisely as a leader from the opposition, I want to convey a clear message: The State of Israel will do whatever it takes in order to prevent a threat to its existence. Despite our differences, if the time comes when we have to act, the current government will receive full backing from the opposition for any determined, appropriate and responsible action, with the aim of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Such action could have significant consequences. As always in matters of national security, The entire national leadership in Israel and the entire people of Israel will unite.”

The new Brighton & Hove Jewish Community Centre hosted a luncheon to celebrate the merger of jLiving and Brighton and Hove Jewish Housing Association.

Some 200 guests from the local community together with Rabbi Hershel Rader and Rebbetzen Rader of Brighton & Hove Hebrew congregation and local dignitaries including the chairman and life president of Hove Hebrew Congregation, Michele and Stanley Cohen, attended.

We have signed a strategic plan with Ista, we are bringing new and upgraded planes. We are bringing many new destinations soon such as non-stop Dublin Manila and Melbourne.

Dor Turgeman scored the winner and dedicated the win to IDF soldiers Lia BenNun, Ohad Dahan and Ori Itzhak Ilouz killed at the Egyptian border earlier in the day.

Brazil’s Marcos Leonardo opened the scoring on 56 minutes only for Anan Khalaiali to equalise with a header. Matheus Nascimento edged Brazil ahead, Hamza Shibli levelled before Turgeman’s historic goal.

Chaim reportedly said, “We united the country. First and foremost, we are happy about that. We were better and deserved it. This team is incredible. I want to reach the final.”

Bibi meets Bundesrat President

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed German Bundesrat President Peter Tschentscher for his first official visit to Israel.

Netanyahu met Tschentscher at his office in Jerusalem to overview challenges facing Israel and Germany.

Israel’s leader said that the fact his nation was assisting the national security of Germany was a “historic’ turning point.

They also discussed strengthening cooperation in technology and innovation between the two countries and in general with the West. Netanyahu expects to hold a G2G meeting this year.

The leaders also conversed about regional issues including expanding the Abraham Accords and Iran's efforts to obtain nuclear weapons.

Netanyahu noted: “A nuclear Iran would threaten not only the State of Israel but all of Europe.”

He stressed to Tschentscher that Israel’s goal was to prevent the extremist regime from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Netanyahu said it was important to ensure the partnership between Israel and Germany continues for generations because of common interests and the obligation to past lessons of Holocaust.

He added: “Hatred of Jews is a phenomena of thousands of years but what has changed is the ability of the Jewish State to defend itself.”

Language is everything

The devil as they say is in the detail. For us and particularly when it comes to reporting or opining on issues concerning Israel, that devil is often hidden in plain sight. Words which have one meaning to one person or group have a very different meaning to another.

We are all familiar with words which have different meanings. Nice by example since it means both pleasant and precise. When it comes to Israel though, words not only have different meanings but also reflect different intentions. The word ‘occupied’ is perhaps the most difficult, when used in the context of ‘Palestinian Territories’.

Some say that ‘occupied’ when talking about the land west of the river Jordan for some, and particularly those with a legal perspective should not be used at all. Occupied suggests that the land belongs to someone else, though since Jordan eschewed that land in 1988 there is an argument that it does not in fact belong to anyone. So, using the word ‘occupied’ on that basis is simply incorrect.

Those proposing the Two State Solution – TSS – say that when talking about Occupied Palestinian Territory, they mean Judea, Samaria and Gaza. They are not very clear about the Old City of Jerusalem though generally say that this is not included. For the TSS supporters the existence of Israel is not an issue. Where things get murky is when the Jew-haters move in. I say Jew-haters since those who oppose any form of state for the Jews are exactly that. These people can be found in the hard political left as well as some of those groups who claim to be pro Palestinian. When these people say occupied they mean the entirety of the State of Israel.

So what?, I hear you say. It wouldn’t matter but for the fact that those proposing the TSS could be described as delusional. Delusional because when they believe that they can negotiate with Hamas or the Palestinian Authority they are coming from a wholly different viewpoint. For both these groups believe that the Jews should not be

in Israel at all, and Israel should not exist.

On this subject I was slightly amused to see a scathing article about a particular UK Jewish group in the online publication – Electronic Intifada. This publication is about as hateful about Israel as you can get and their definition of occupied certainly includes the entirety of the State of Israel. The group in question is Yachad, hardly a group revered as a strong pro-Israel advocate amongst the UK Jewish Community. Again, so what?

If the visceral criticism from Electronic Intifada had been directed at Stand With Us or the National Jewish Assembly, then that would make some sense, since neither of these organisations are, as far as I am aware, big fans of the TSS. What was most telling though is that the attack was against Yachad, a group which has prided itself on being progressive and asserting their support for Palestinian rights. In other words, anyone who even acknowledges Israel’s right to exist is fair game for the likes of

Electronic Intifada. Very disappointing for Yachad, most instructive for the rest of us. There needs to be a reality check as to what the Israel haters say and what they mean. They might talk the talk – ie about a peaceful solution – but the walking they have in mind is for the Jews to leave Israel. For my part, I don’t believe that the supporters of the former Labour leader have any interest in solving the Israel-Palestine issue which involves there being two states at all. For them and many others there should only be one state and it should not be occupied (there’s that word again) by Jews. For years now, many Jewish groups have failed to grasp this and they continue to do so at their and our peril. Watch the language and crucially the meaning behind it. Bear in mind that all that glitters is not gold.

Norwood launches sensory garden B’nei Mitzvah walkers raise £10k for Camp Simcha

Pupils from nine different schools joined Camp Simcha’s sponsored walk, raising over £10k for the charity’s work supporting families with seriously ill children.

Residents, family members, staff and friends marked the grand opening of a bespoke sensory garden in one of Norwood’s residential care homes on Sunday.

The afternoon offered residents Stephanie, Melanie, Joe and Baruch the first chance to open the door on their accessible, stimulating and inclusive garden to their loved ones.

The garden is one element of the stateof-the-art ‘smart home’ officially opened by Norwood’s joint Presidents Lord and Lady Mendelsohn in June 2017.

installed in the house gives residents the freedom to live independently, while mitigating any risk. Residents with profound learning disabilities can control their environment, for example, by opening and closing their bedroom door, which they would otherwise be unable to do without the use of life-changing technology. They can also benefit from the house’s own sensory room.

The reception was hosted by Stephanie’s parents, Norwood supporters Judith and Nigel Harris, who were among the key supporters of the garden project.

The children, who are celebrating their bar or bat mitzvah in this year, walked an 8-mile route around North London, stopping off at the Whittington and Royal Free Hospitals to deliver some of Camp Simcha’s cuddly monkeys as gifts for children on the wards.

I am looking forward to all the artists and people we support seeing their inspiring work displayed.”

The unique art exhibition and fundraising auction will showcase works of art been created by people with learning disabilities and autism that Kisharon support.

Art has been collated over a six-month period where participants have worked with established and emerging artists to create over 50 pieces of art and sculpture.

The ground-breaking project offers a holistic, artistic experience.

The art event will raise money for the charity. For people Kisharon supports, the impact of seeing their art displayed in a gallery and then sold to raise money will be hugely empowering.

Up to 30 artists volunteered time and effort to work individually or as a group to create each piece of art.

Artist and children and adult’s art teacher Deborah Goldschmidt worked with a group of children from Kisharon Noé School, she added: “Art is enjoyable and can be very therapeutic. This project has been extremely meaningful and rewarding to see how much the children enjoyed creating art. They were so engaged and produced some lovely work that I can’t wait to see exhibited.”

JCD raises over £12k at inaugural business networking breakfast Doctors’ health panel in Salford

LSJS opens door to learning opportunities

The London School of Jewish Studies held its fourth annual conference for secondary school Jewish Studies teachers and informal educators last month.

Rabbi Danny Baigel, Secondary Programmes Manager and Jewish Career Pathways Director at LSJS, organised the event where they hosted 60 educators.

Chief Rabbi Mirvis, LSJS President, offered a timely address related to Shavuot and importance of the journey leading up to it. “Every learning opportunity opens the door to further learning opportunities. When we teach, we learn even more,” the Chief Rabbi noted.

Teachers attended breakout sessions with Dr Rivka Press Shwartz, SAR High School in New York City and Rabbi Dr Daniel Rose, Koren Publishers. They also heard from Spencer Lewis, Yavneh College, Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum, Dean of LSJS, and Dayan Eliezer Zobin of Immanuel College.

Conference sessions challenged teachers how children perceive the notion of faith, the relevance of ritual and purpose of prayer. Other sessions facilitated discussion about the power and perils of teachers as role models and role of informal educators to support students with the challenges of today. There were also opportunities to learn practical strategies to engage students in the study of text and a final session exploring ways teachers can partner with parents in the Jewish journey of children through school.

Rabbi Baigel said: “Conference challenged teachers to rethink how core, traditional values, texts and concepts need to be framed to support the students of today in our classrooms. There was a real positive energy amongst participants and it is inspiring to be with dedicated professionals. Conference was the first step. Our teachers now need to reflect and consider ways to implement ideas discussed in their school setting.”

He added: “There was a positive vibe throughout with teachers taking time to reflect and catch up with colleagues from across the schools. The Chief Rabbi was fantastic, championing the central role our educators play in the community and challenging us to continue learning, developing and providing rich content to engage students. It was a real privilege meeting dedicated and passionate educators our community is fortunate to have in our schools.”

Regarding the sessions he observed: “Rabbi Rose challenged educators to consider how to maximise the potential of role model education within and outside the classroom. Quoting Heschel that ‘what we need more than anything else is not textbooks but textpeople’, he discussed how this applies to Jewish Studies teachers in our schools. Dr Schwartz has explored the challenges modern Orthodox teenagers in the United States face and how they perceive their school experience. This fascinating trove of research

data, gathered from thousands of students across the US, prompted teachers in the room to consider how our own students perceive their school experience and think about strategies that parents and teachers can use to make school a more positive experience where students feel connected and part of the enterprise. The session of teaching texts by Mr Lewis was both practical and inspiring.”

LSJS Chief Executive Joanne Greenaway said: “Bringing together Jewish studies teachers and educators for enrichment and development is so critical. We enjoy celebrating what our teachers do and provide nourishment and space for challenge and reflection. Many challenges in Jewish education today are age old yet they need constant reframing to meet the students of today. I’m always inspired by our community of teachers, they deserve all our investment and more.”

The conference was well received by delegates. Michael Lewis, Head of Jewish Studies at Immanuel College, commented: “It’s been great to have time to think, to challenge and be challenged.”

Rabbi Baigel is delighted how conference went this year. Regarding his role at LSJS as Secondary Programmes Manager, he said: “We are the only Jewish teacher training provider in the community accredited by the Department of Education. Our role is core in terms of making sure there are teachers at our schools. We want teachers that are professional and skilled to educate children in our community.

“There are other providers but our unique understanding of Jewish schools puts us in a different position. There is an

ongoing pressure to find the best teachers and support them in their journey. As people are aware, the landscape of teacher recruitment is challenging. There is a reduction of people thinking about going into teaching and an upturn of people leaving the profession, so it’s a responsibility to ensure we have great teachers in our schools.”

LSJS support teachers of all faiths, and none, to teach in Jewish schools across the UK.

Rabbi Baigel oversees the programme for all subjects and there is a renewed focus on Jewish Studies.

He observed: “We work in tandem with schools and a significant part is the ‘experience’ trainees get in a school. All schools hold an induction so staff understand its ethos and identity. We hold an introductory session on Jewish ethos. Dr Helena Miller has done extensive research into Jewish schools and runs an excellent session on why people choose a Jewish school. Embedded into our course are significant parts of the year we believe everyone should be aware of in the life at a Jewish school. Sessions may include Holocaust education and Israel’s Independence Day as a central place in the identity of Jewish student. Jewish festivals are significant in terms of how they might impact homework and people’s mindsets because it’s a family orientated time. There are sessions frontal led, lived and planned but throughout the year we support people to make sure they are comfortable at a school.”

Regarding current challenges, Rabbi Baigel said: “Our role is to explore ways where we can support schools in getting

people through the door into teaching. Specifically, when it comes to Jewish Studies, we have great opportunities for people to give back to the community, to work in our schools and make a real impact on the Jewish lives of students and their families. But the cost of living crisis together with a lack of bursaries for studying Jewish Studies as a teaching career is a challenge.”

Rabbi Baigel acknowledged that more Jewish Studies teachers are required and works on LSJS’ flagship ‘Teach to Lead’ two-year programme for Jewish Studies to help achieve this aspiration.

The programme caters for graduates devoted to teaching, and for those who use the experience as a springboard for other vocations. ‘Teach First’ has recruited thousands of top graduates to teaching but research by LSJS has demonstrated increasing difficulty to fill spaces.

Candidates benefit from master classes with key community leaders and educators, one-to-one in-school mentoring and personalised coaching from professional and lay leaders in various fields. There are also placements in schools, corporates and exposure to teaching in centres of excellence abroad.

Rabbi Baigel noted: ‘Teach to Lead’ gives participants exposure to be leading educators in the community and abroad, and to really think carefully about leadership opportunities.”

He concluded: “Teaching is primarily about relationships and understanding pupils in the classroom. Empathy is key, so is flexibility whenever you walk into a classroom, a desire and passion to share knowledge, but also to develop pupils in the classroom, to champion progress, and resilience.”

CAN I CHUCK YOUR PAGE?

It has always bothered me that some newspapers carry actual Torah thoughts in them. Case in point, Tehilim or Ethics of the Fathers which often feature directly under your column. Then this gets thrown out which seems completely inappropriate. How is this allowed? Surely people should be encouraged to put them into shaimos for burial.

I agree! The very thought of people throwing my face in the bin each week is shocking! The general rule is when there are actual verses then these should be cut out and placed into shaimos. Pages within newspapers and magazines which contain Torah articles, should be placed in a plastic bag and in recycling. Any newspaper ought to really alert its readers to this on the relevant page or above the particular column.

As for my picture, do as some already do: Stick it up on the wall and use me as a dartboard!

MAKING THE GRADE

It is exam season and kids everywhere are stressing out. I find that my older two, who always attend youth services, don’t go to Synagogue for weeks over the whole exam period. I know other kids who get so flustered. I know parents want the best for their kids and they want them to have the best grades and get into the best universities. I think that’s probably endemic amongst Jew -

ish parents, because of the need to say “my son the doctor” and the “keep up with the Cohens” mindset. I just think all this pressure is wrong and we have seen some tragic consequences sometimes as well.

I don’t know if your singling out Jewish parents is a generalisation but I am reminded of the mother who was pushing her double stroller in Brent Cross when someone stopped her and commented: “They’re so cute! How old are they?” The mother replied: “The accountant is five and the lawyer is two and a half.” Then there was the announcement in the Jewish newspaper births and deaths column: “Mr. and Mrs. Feinberg are delighted to announce the arrival of their newborn son, Dr. Jonathan Feinberg!”

Humour aside, I know many are anxious for their children to do well. I was that kid who came home with a 97 percent on a test and my father would ask me, “What did you get wrong!” It’s OK to push our children a little, but please do remember, amongst the students who will be sitting for exams there is an artist, who doesn’t need to understand math. There is an entrepreneur, who doesn’t care about history or English literature. There’s a musician whose grade in biology won’t matter and an athlete whose physical fitness is more important than their grade in physics.

If your child does well, that’s great and please be sure to

praise them! But if they don’t meet with your expectation, please don’t harm their dignity or take away their self-esteem. Remind them that it’s OK, it’s just an exam and that they are cut out for much bigger things in life. They need to know that no matter how well they do, they have your unconditional love. Frankly that’s what really matters and will enable them to go onto achieve in life.

We don’t believe in chance per se, rather that everything is guided by something which transcends us. Yes, we say “Mazal Tov,” which translates as “good luck.” When Jews say “Mazal Tov to congratulate someone, it is a way of

acknowledging and celebrating the individual’s milestone and achievements. It also reflects the Jewish belief that events in our lives are influenced by the celestial realms and the concept of destiny. However, fundamental to Jewish belief is also the fact that we have the ability to transcend that. While “mazal” may play a role in the events that unfold in our lives, our

actions and choices ultimately shape our destiny. So, while we acknowledge the unpredictable nature of life, we are encouraged to take responsibility for our actions, make wise decisions, and trust in the divine guidance that guides our paths. There is this wonderful saying: “Pray as if everything depends on G-d, and act as if everything depends on you.”

Torah from Israel The Age of Pessimism

Ever since we were liberated from Mitzrayim, we had heard glowing reports about a land of Hashem, which flowed with milk and honey. Having arrived at the doorstep of this magical land, we secretly dispatched twelve agents to gather intel and to determine the best entry strategy.

Everything our spies witnessed in Eretz Yisrael corroborated our expectations. Israel was not a typical land and everything about this country was outsized, beyond human imagination. The mammoth fruits were so colossal that it took eight men to carry one cluster of grapes. Fearsome giants roamed the land, capable of crushing any would-be trespassers under their boots. Evidently, these gigantic ogres weren’t prepared to simply roll over and hand us their country. Life seemed unforgiving in this ruthless land, which appeared to devour its inhabitants. Nothing is ever as easy as it looks on paper, and entering the land of Hashem was no different.

Shuddering at the reports of the returning meraglim, we stood at a historical crossroads. We could optimistically place our trust in a Hashem who had emancipated us from Egypt and had split the ocean. Alternatively, we could take the pessimistic route, assuming the worst and caving to our dark fears. Sadly, we chose the cynical approach, rebelled against Moshe, and rerouted Jewish history for forty years. It all depends on how you spin it.

Our descent into gloomy pessimism was caused by loss of faith- both in Hashem and in ourselves. A year before the expedition of the spies we had betrayed Hashem by bowing to the egel. Though He had forgiven us, perhaps there were limits to His divine clemency. Suffering the lingering trauma of our national sins, we harbored severe reservations about whether would assist us in battling these insurmountable giants.

More significant than losing faith in Hashem, we lost faith in ourselves. In the weeks before this reconnaissance mission the nation was roiled by several jarring controversies, such as our immature complaining about meat and our nostalgic pining for the creature comforts of Egypt. After these controversies subsided, the slandering of Moshe by his own two siblings further eroded confidence in his leadership. Our social fabric was quickly disintegrating and without confidence in our future, we sunk into dark pessimism, collapsing under the pressure of our fears. Religious success depends upon delicately calibrating between doubt and optimism. Questioning ourselves and cross-examining our personal behavior

enables honest self-introspection and religious improvement. By contrast, inflated self-confidence builds complacency and leads to religious apathy and stagnancy. Doubt preserves religious integrity. Though doubt and uncertainty are vital for personal religious growth, pessimism and uncertainty about our collective future is religiously unhealthy. Essential to religious belief is an optimistic view of the future. Hashem established a historical covenant with our people guaranteeing our Jewish destiny. We may face temporary or even prolonged adversity, but Jewish destiny is inevitable. Excess pessimism about our future represents a deficiency of faith in Hashem. Emunah isn’t meant to glaze over hardship or propose naïve assumptions that “everything will be all right”. However, emunah should provide a bedrock of optimism for our long-term prospects.

THE AGE OF PESSIMISM

We are currently surrounded by a culture of pessimism. Several anti-humanistic trends are weakening our belief in the future of humanity and are causing widespread pessimism. The first tide of pessimism is based upon environmental concerns about the unlimited growth of technology and how it is causing irrep-

pessimism, often referred to as techno-pessimism, is being driven by overcon fidence in human technological prowess. Artificial Intelligence will completely reshape our world and, potentially will help us transcend many of our human limits. Fusing artificial intelligence to human beings may allow us to increase our intelligence and faculties. Additionally, we may be able to create sentient beings that can travel to parts of outer space which currently lie beyond the limits of human travel. Down the line we may be able to preserve our minds or create new forms of intelligence.

Ironically, this supremely optimistic view of the future cheapens the value of human life. If we create beings of superior intelligence what does that say about human identity and about our future? As robots become more human, humans become more robosized. Perhaps, Darwin was right and, as the world evolves to produce higher beings, humans will be the next in line to go extinct. Perhaps we are creating our own extinction.

Environmentalist alarms and swelled ambitions about enhanced reality, are combining to paint a bleak and pessimistic future for the creature of Hashem we call homo sapiens.

burning. To make matters worse, our enemies have sensed our social vulnerability and have begun rattling the sabers of war. Over the past year, in Israel, there is much to be pessimistic about.

This is precisely where faith sets in. Faith in Hashem, the dignity of Man, and the destiny of Jewish history. Humans are the masterpiece of Hashem’s creation gifted with divine image and personal dignity. As part of His concern for human welfare He guaranteed that our planet will not collapse, and that humanity will not go extinct. The divine promise of global sustainability does not absolve us from the moral duty of environmental conservation, but it does provide a baseline of confidence about the future. We may develop advanced technology to create beings of higher intelligence of faculties, faculties but we alone possess a divinely endowed and immortal soul and we alone have been chosen by Hashem for moral experience and conscience.

Astonishingly, some even assert that it is pointless and selfish to bring children into a world which will soon go extinct. Panic about global destruction is causing widespread anticipatory anxiety and is providing a gloomy outlook about our future on this planet. We obviously must do better to conserve planetary resources, but without demoralizing doomsday prophecies and without falling into pessimism.

ISRAELI PESSIMISM

Israelis have their own set of reasons to be pessimistic. Over the past year, life in Israel hasn’t always been rosy. We have endured terrible internal strife which has shattered our national unity and torn apart our social fabric. In the past, as difficult as life has been in Israel, we always took solace in national unity as the great equalizer. We may have encountered difficult periods, but at least we faced the challenges together, as one family. There is nothing like being at home, even when adversity strikes. However, over the past year, it feels as if our home itself is

As Jews we have been chosen not just for moral expectations but for historical covenant. For thousands of years, though dislocated from our homeland, we represented Hashem and His values. Our return to the land of Israel is an event of epic proportions and signals the beginning of the end of history. We know exactly how history concludes.

No one can determine exactly how the future will unfold, but faith belief stabilizes our confidence about the future and should help us repel the dark clouds of pessimism.

At this point in Sefer Bamidbar, Bnei Yisrael were now ready to continue their journey from Har Sinai to inherit the Promised Land. The Sefer ‘should have’ been the story of that journey and their inheritance of the land. Tragically, in Sefer Bamidbar those goals are never attained.

Had nothing ‘gone wrong,’ it would have been precisely at this point that Bnei Yisrael should have begun their magnificent journey to the Promised Land. Instead, the next sixteen chapters discuss exactly the opposite, i.e. how (and why) Bnei Yisrael did not inherit the land.

In those chapters, the Torah describes numerous incidents when Bnei Yisrael rebelled against G-d, culminating with G-d’s decision not to allow that generation to enter the land.

WHAT WENT WRONG?

So what went wrong? What caused Bnei Yisrael to sin at the incidents of the ‘mit’onenim,’ the ‘mit’avim,’ and the ‘meraglim’ etc.?

Chazal find a ‘hint’ in the pasuk that describes Bnei Yisrael’s departure from Har Sinai: “And they traveled from G-d’s mountain…” (see 10:33–34).

The Midrash comments: “Like a child leaving school – running away, in the same manner Bnei Yisrael ran away from Har Sinai a three-day distance, for they studied [too much] Torah at Har Sinai…”

Even though they studied G-d’s laws at Har Sinai, it seems as though the spirit of those laws were not internalized. The people were indeed looking forward to leaving Har Sinai, but they were not looking forward to keeping G-d’s laws in Eretz Canaan.

to these sins. Once Bnei Yisrael left with the ‘wrong attitude,’ it was inevitable that they would sin.

TOO HOLY TO LEAD

Despite the severity of chet ha-egel, Bnei Yisrael’s sin was the result of a misguided desire to fill the spiritual vacuum created by Moshe’s absence. In contrast, the sin of the mit’avim seems to have been totally physical – an uncontrollable lust for food.

Chet ha-egel presented an educational challenge that Moshe Rabbeinu is willing to accept, i.e. to take this misguided desire and channel it in the proper direction.

However, after the lustful sin of the mit’avim, Moshe Rabbeinu simply ‘gives up.’ He is unable to fathom how this nation, after spending an entire year at Har Sinai, has become so preoccupied with such mundane desires. Moshe simply does not have the educational tools to deal with such a low level of behavior.

G-d finds it necessary to take some of the ruach from Moshe and transfer it to the seventy elders. G-d realizes that Moshe must now share some of his leadership responsibilities with elders who

communal offerings on Shabbat and festival days.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 10:11-34

can possibly deal more realistically with this type of crisis.

One could suggest an additional insight. In Sefer Bamidbar, Moshe Rabbeinu could be considered ‘over qualified’ or ‘too holy’ to lead the people.

Ultimately, Yehoshua will be chosen to lead Bnei Yisrael into the Promised Land. As the dedicated student of Moshe Rabbeinu, and the experienced leader of his own tribe (and of the entire army in the battle against Amalek), Yehoshua possesses the necessary leadership qualities. He is also sufficiently ‘down to earth,’ and therefore will be able to lead Bnei Yisrael into the land.

The lesson that we can learn from this parsha is certainly not ‘how to criticize’ Moshe Rabbeinu. Rather, it should remind us when teaching – to keep in mind the emotional needs of our students; and when studying – to keep in mind the potential of how much we can gain from our teachers.

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEMIDBAR 8:1-14

G-d tells Moshe to instruct Aharon, the Kohen Gadol, to light the Menorah every day in the Mishkan (Tabernacle). G-d tells Moshe to appoint the Levi’im to their service in the Mishkan. This involves bringing two animal offerings, the people placing their hands upon the heads of the Levi’im and each Levi being physically lifted in the air and waved by Moshe and Aharon.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 8:15-26

The tribe of Levi is to take over the role that had been designated for the firstborn, who were sanctified on the night of the Exodus from Egypt, when the Egyptian firstborn were slain and the Israelite firstborn survived.

In the second year after the Exodus, on 14 Nisan, G-d commands the people to bring their Pesach offerings. There are people who are ritually impure, having recently come into contact with a dead person. Unable to bring an offering, they come to Moshe and Aharon and express their desire not to miss out. G-d tells Moshe that they can have a second chance, a month later, on what becomes known as Pesach Sheni (‘the second Pesach’).

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 9:15-10:10

A cloud covers the Mishkan by day, with a fiery appearance at night. The Israelites remain encamped until the cloud lifts, which is the signal to journey on. The duration of time during which the cloud covers the Mishkan varies. G-d tells Moshe to make two silver trumpets to summon the people before travelling in the desert. The trumpets are also to be blown when the nation is at war, in order to evoke Divine mercy, as well as to accompany

In the second year after the Exodus, on 20 Iyar, the cloud lifts and the nation journeys from the Sinai desert to the Paran desert. The Torah describes the order of the tribes’ journeying and the different stages of dismantling and erecting the Mishkan. Moshe asks his father-inlaw Yitro, referred to here as Chovav, to join the nation on their journey.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 10:35-11:29

When the Aron (Ark) would start its miraculous journey in front of the nation, Moshe would appeal to G-d to scatter His enemies. The people complain. G-d sends a fatal fire against them, until Moshe pleads for mercy on their behalf. The ‘rabble’ then complain about the manna, which does not taste as good as the food in Egypt. G-d is angered. Moshe says he is helpless to deal with the nation’s complaints. G-d tells him to appoint 70 elders to assist in leading the nation. G-d tells Moshe that, in response to their complaints, the nation will be given meat for a whole month, until they are

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 11:30-12:16

A wind blows quails into the camp. The people gather the quails and start eating them, but G-d sends ‘a mighty blow’ against the people for their original complaints. Miriam and Aharon speak negatively about Moshe. G-d rebukes them and Miriam develops a tzara’at skin affliction. Moshe prays for her recovery. Miriam is quarantined outside the camp for seven days, during which the people do not journey.

HAFTARAH

The prophet Zecharia relates a vision in which an angel visits Yehoshua the Kohen Gadol and chastises him, as symbolised by Yehoshua’s soiled garments. The angel also shows Zecharia a menorah and two olives trees to provide oil for lighting it, indicating that the Second Temple will not be built by use of force, but by G-d’s spirit.

Lashon Hara: The Ultimate Corruption of Speech

One day, a young boy came home from school with a note for his mother. He gave it to her with a smile, and said, “My teacher gave me this paper and told me to give it only to you.”

His mother read the letter quickly, and her eyes filled with tears as she then read the letter out loud to her son. “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him, and the teachers are not qualified to teach him. Please educate him yourself.”

His parents embraced this mission, teaching him and raising him to become one of the greatest thinkers of his time. He became a leading innovator, a Torah sage, and inspired an entire generation.

Years later, after his mother passed away, he was going through some old family documents. He noticed a folded paper in the corner of a drawer, and curiously opened it.

On the paper was written: “Your son is mentally incapable. The teachers do not want to teach him anymore. Please educate him yourself.”

He cried as he remembered his mother reading the letter to him, realizing the positive impact it had on his life. That night, he wrote in his diary: “I was a mentally incapable child, but because of my hero mother, I became the person I am today.”

This is the power of words. The words of his teachers could have destroyed him, but the words of his mother supported, empowered, and enabled him.

In these situations, don’t you think it’s possible that people might put you down, say negative things about you, or even make fun of you behind your back? After all, we have all been in the room when someone else was the subject of gossip. Gossiping is such a common occurrence; it seems to be an almost builtin practice of human nature. We all know people who can find something bad to say about anyone; they criticize anything and everything, anybody and everybody; words of negativity flow easily from their mouths. But even if we are not negative people, we still experience the desire to occasionally put other people down, to share negative stories about them behind their backs. Why do we feel this compulsion to speak negatively about others, to criticize and gossip about them?

This leads us to a fundamental question: what exactly is the nature of lashon hara (evil speech)? There is a common misconception that lashon hara refers only to sharing false information about another person. People claim that if

something is true, however, there is nothing wrong with sharing it. You’ll therefore often hear people say: “but it’s true,” as if this is a good defense, exonerating themselves from any possible wrongdoing. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. There is a separate prohibition of lying (“Mi’d’var sheker tirchak”; Shemos 23:7). The Torah prohibition of lashon hara refers specifically to sharing true, negative information about someone (in order to harm them). In order to understand the prohibition against lashon hara, we must clarify why we may not say something hurtful about another person, even if it is true.

In addition to the prohibition itself, the punishment for speaking lashon hara is puzzling as well. The Torah describes a strange punishment for one who speaks lashon hara: In addition to receiving tzaraas (affliction), he must leave the camp of the Jewish People and remain outside, isolated and alone. What is the meaning of this punishment, and why is it fitting for one who spoke negatively about another?

THE POWER OF SPEECH

In order to understand this topic, we must briefly review a concept we have discussed several times before. As human beings, we are naturally isolated and separate from one another. We are individual beings, all living in our own subjective world and inner universe. We will never be able to experience life through anyone else’s perspective — only through our own inner consciousness. We have our own thoughts and feelings; things no one else can see. We face our own hardships and tribulations that no one else truly understands. This results in several difficulties. If I am trapped in my own inner world, how can I connect with other people? How can I know what’s going on inside their heads? How can I share my inner life with them? How can I overcome the infinite barrier between myself and everyone else?

As we have explained before, this is the gift of speech. Speech is the mechanism that enables us to connect with other people and overcome the barrier between us. You begin with your inner thoughts and experience. You then form the specific words that will encase your thoughts as you give them concrete form and throw these words out into the world around you in the form of vibrations. If another person is nearby, their ears can pick up these vibrations and translate them into sound. These sounds form words, and the words form sentences. They must then keep track of all the different words and sentences, hold on to them, and bring them back from memory as they work to recreate a complete picture of everything you said. Amazingly, this person can now experience your inner world inside their own mind. They now contain a piece of you within themselves. The barrier between your worlds has been diminished.

THE MOUTH AS THE ORGAN OF CONNECTION

The mouth is therefore the organ of connection, holding the potential to create deep, existential connection. As we have previously explained, all the functions of the mouth serve to connect two disparate pieces together: Eating connects the physical body to the angelic soul; if you don’t eat, your soul leaves your body. Speaking connects people’s inner worlds together; when you speak with someone, you share your inner world with them. Kissing connects two physical bodies together, reflecting a deeper form of internal connection and oneness.

THE POTENTIAL OF SPEECH

Speech holds the power to create relationships, lift people up, expand people’s minds, and enable genuine communication and connection. An interesting illustration of this concept is the fact that a person’s rebbi (spiritual teacher) is considered, in a sense, to be his father. This is because there are two essential aspects of a human being requiring two different forms of creation. A child’s physical makeup is formed from his biological parent’s DNA, but the inner being — the soul, the mind, the consciousness — is yet to be fully expressed and developed. When a rebbi imparts deep Torah wisdom to his talmid (student) through speech, the ideas that were once only in the rebbi’s mind are now within the student’s as well. The rebbi has, through the power of speech, helped create the inner world of his student. In doing so, he becomes a partner in this student’s creation. In a deep way, he has become this student’s father as well.

According to halachah, the rebbi — the spiritual father — trumps the biological father in some ways. The Rambam paskens (codifies) that if both your father and your rebbi require your kavod (honor), your rebbi’s kavod comes first. This is because your father brought you to Olam Hazeh — this physical and fleeting world — whereas your rebbi helps bring you to Olam Haba — the eternal World to Come. This process that your rebbi facilitates is realized through the power of speech, as he imparts wisdom and understanding to you. We therefore see the creative power and potential of speech. It connects us together, helps bridge our inner worlds, and allows us to expand our minds as we learn from others.

LASHON HARA: CORRUPTION OF SPEECH

Once we understand the purpose of speech, we can begin to comprehend just how abhorrent lashon hara truly is. Lashon hara takes the very tool of connection — speech — and uses it to disconnect people from each other. When you speak negatively about someone, you create a wall between the subject of your negativity and the person you are speaking with. The very tool of connection has been corrupted to achieve its opposite goal.

EXAMPLES IN THE TORAH

There are examples throughout the Torah illustrating the disastrous effects of lashon hara, showing its power to disconnect:

• The first, primal example of lashon hara in the Torah was in Gan Eden, at the very inception of creation. The nachash (snake) is notorious for speaking lashon hara to Adam and Chavah, condemning itself to a life of curse. It is notable that what the nachash said about the Eitz HaDaas was, in a sense, true, but it caused a major disconnect between Adam and Chavah, and between them and Hashem.

• Another example of lashon hara’s disastrous effects is the sin of the Meraglim (spies). Again, what the Meraglim said about Eretz Yisrael was technically true. The problem lay in the fact that they used speech to create a separation between Klal Yisrael and the land of Eretz Yisrael, and in doing so, created a separation between Klal Yisrael and Hashem as well.

• Another interesting case of lashon hara is Miriam’s criticism of Moshe. While her intentions were noble, and she even intended to help create connection between Moshe and Tzipporah through her words of rebuke, she was judged according to her lofty level. Through her words, she created a rift between herself and Moshe, and potentially did the same between Moshe and Tzipporah, as well as between Moshe and Klal Yisrael. She was therefore punished for the sin of disconnecting others through negative speech, forced to temporarily leave the camp of Klal Yisrael.

Now that we understand the severity of lashon hara and its devastating effects on those around us, we must ask the obvious question: Why do we feel so compelled to speak negatively about others? In our next article, we will delve deeper into this fascinating topic and try to understand it on an ever more profound level.

We learn in this week’s parsha Behalotecha that Moses appoints 70 elders to help him govern the people when they complain about their experience in the desert and the manna that they are receiving to eat. God tells Moses that he will draw upon the spirit that is on him and put it upon these elders who receive prophecy:

In putting his spirit upon them, Rashi, in his famous commentary, likens Moses to a light that is placed in a candlestick at which everybody lights his lamps and yet its illuminating power is not diminished at all (based on Sifrei Bamidbar 93).

Last week I had the privilege of visiting a local Jewish secondary school and seeing a number of recent graduates of the LSJS teacher training programme teaching Jewish Studies. I saw them passing on

the flame of our tradition. I saw exciting, innovative teaching from enthusiastic, caring, knowledgeable teachers. I saw them supported by their school-based mentors and by senior leaders and really thriving in their careers.

I saw the way in which their students looked to their teachers as role models and were absorbed in the lessons they were being taught, engaging with the texts they were grappling with and connecting with their teachers. Those teachers had been guided by LSJS teachers during their training year and were part of the process of inspiring them, providing them with core skills and cutting-edge practice-based research, and encouraging them to strive for excellence in the classroom.

Mediterranean Turkey Kebabs

BBQ season has arrived; so make the most of al fresco dining with these tasty turkey kebabs assembled with Mediterranean vegetables. I love the smell of BBQ food, its charcoal flavour enhances ingredients in a way that no traditional cooking can. However, should the weather suddenly turn, the kebabs can be cooked on a grill.

HERE ARE SOME GOLDEN RULES ABOUT BBQ COOKING: -

• If using a charcoal BBQ, wait until the charcoal is glowing red with a powdery grey surface before starting to cook.

• It is advisable not to cook frozen meat, as this takes much longer for the heat to penetrate to the centre.

• Allow frozen meat to defrost preferably by leaving it in the refrigerator overnight or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Keep raw and cooked foods apart at all times. Don’t handle cooked foods with utensils that have touched raw meats or put cooked or ready-to-eat food on plates that have held raw meats.

• Turn food regularly to ensure it is cooked right the way through.

• Cook meat until it is piping hot all the way through, none of the meat is pink and any juices run clear.

• You could cook the meat in the oven first and finish it off on the BBQ for added flavour. This is particularly advisable if cooking for lots of people.

Ingredients

6 tablespoons olive oil

3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

2 cloves garlic- peeled and finely chopped

2 tablespoons fresh basil - chopped

2 courgettes

1 long thin aubergine

300g boneless turkey – cut into cubes

1 red pepper – cut into 5 cm squares

1 yellow pepper – cut into 5 cm squares

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Garnish: Chopped basil and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil

Method

1) In a small bowl mix the oil with the lemon juice, garlic and basil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

2) Thinly slice the courgettes and aubergines lengthwise into strips 5 mm/ ¼ inch thick. Cut them crosswise about two thirds of the way along their length. Discard the shorter length.

3) Wrap half the turkey pieces with courgette slices and the other half with the aubergine slices.

4) Prepare the kebabs by alternating the wrapped turkey and pepper squares. Lay the prepared kebabs on a platter and sprinkle with the flavoured oil.

5) Leave to marinade for 30 minutes or over night.

6) Pre- heat the BBQ or grill.

7) BBQ for about 10 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and meat cooked, turning the kebabs occasionally.

To serve the stylish way: Drizzle with some extra virgin olive oil and chopped basil leaves.

Family Fun

Beha’alotecha is a fabulous mix of interesting stories and Halachot. First we learn of the unique Mitzvah given to Aharon and his descendants. Each day they were to kindle the Menorah in the Beit Hamikdash. This was a form a consolation to Aharon who had missed out from the Nesi’im offerings which we brought up each day of the inauguration of the Mishkan.

There were a group of Jews who were impure at the time of the Korban Pesach on 14th Nissan and therefore could not bring the offering. Instead of giving up, they pleaded with Moshe for another opportunity and Hashem gave us

all a new Mitzvah forever due to their keen desire. Pesach Sheni on 14 Iyar is a new opportunity for the Jewish people to bring up a Korban Pesach if they missed out on the first chance. It is eaten with Matzot and Maror.

The Torah continues with the details of the travels of the Jewish people in the Midbar. They followed the Cloud of Glory at day and the pillar of fire at night. Hashem told Moshe to make two trumpets of silver which were sounded on special occasions.

Some of the Jews complained to Moshe that they had had enough of the “Manna” food they were eating

and missed the fish and cucumbers and other vegetables they had enjoyed in Egypt! Hashem was not impressed with their complaint but sent them birds which they could eat. Some enjoyed the food but some suffered from eating them.

At the end of the Parsha we read of the unfortunate incident of Miriam talking to her brother Aharon about Moshe Rabbeinu. As the humble leader and teacher of the Jewish people, Moshe himself was not offended but Hashem was very indignant about the honour of Moshe. “Why were you not scared to talk about my servant Moshe”? He asked rhetorically. Moshe was

not a simple prophet - he had the highest level of prophecy ever before or after him!

Miriam was afflicted with Tzara’at and Moshe davened to Hashem to heal her. The Jewish people waited for seven days. Many many years earlier, Miriam had waited for her brother - waiting by the River Nile when the baby was placed in the water in a basket. As 80 + years had passed since then, one may have been forgiven for forgetting that favour.

Not Hashem though, He doesn’t forget any deed we do and when the time comes to reward us, the reward comes.

Beha’alotecha is the third Sidra in the book of Bemidbar.

It contains 136 verses, 1,840 words and 7,055 letters.

Pesach Sheni was instituted because some people could not bring the Pesach Sacrifice at its appointed time.

Dear Jana How do YOU BBQ?

Dear reader

The sun is shining, the drinks are cooling. What better time to fire up the BBQ? When we BBQ, we like to go either super simple or all out. The super simple version is hot dogs (try out our new chicken hot dogs in store), burgers and chicken wings (plain or marinated). The burgers and wings as well as fresh sausages and shishliks are always on special at Kosher Deli so make for a good budget BBQ.

When we want to go all out, we have all of the above plus some marinated chicken thighs or drumsticks (there are a number of flavours available in store) and for the pièce de resistance, we take a rib joint and separate it out into flat pieces. To do this, lay the joint on a board and remove the strings. Slide your fingers under the flap and separate it gently from the eye, use a sharp knife to loosen it if needed. Then butterfly the eye by slicing not quite all the way through the middle and open it up to make a flat piece. Always use a very sharp knife when cutting meat and keep away from ready to eat items to avoid cross contamination. To cook it, sprinkle with salt and pepper and lay it on the grill when it has cooled off a bit. Any leftovers of that rib (ha ha!) can be sliced cold for sandwiches, Shabbat platters or even just snacking.

We tend to eat mostly straight off the BBQ but if you do want to sit and make a meal of it, make sure you have ketchup, mustard and a good garlic mayo to add to buns or for dipping.
