UK JEWRY CELEBRATES PURIM
BY ADAM MOSES
Former Prime Minister Harold Wilson once said “a week is a long time in politics”. When it comes to the coronavirus, an hour is a very long time. As we went to print, the world as we know it is changing rapidly. In the last 24 hours alone, some shocking developments have occurred. Israel has banned all gatherings of over 100 people, immediately affecting Yeshivot, funerals, weddings and many other daily life experiences for vast multitudes of people. Donald Trump has banned all flights from Mainland Europe, whilst The Republic of Ireland has followed Italy and other countries by closing all schools and most shops, effectively putting the country on lockdown. The World Health Organisation has now officially declared the global coronavirus crisis a pandemic. But it is not too late for countries to act. The change in stance by WHO saw stock markets plunge. In the UK, Prime Minister Boris
Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organisation

will be suspended, and sick pay extentions were among numerous announcements. Sunak warned of a “significant but temporary disruption” to the economy but said it would recover in time. “We are doing everything we can to keep this country and our people healthy and financially

Travelink reacts after Israel MOTL 2020 cancelled due to announces quarantine period coronavirus Travelink is assisting concerned clients following news that the Israeli government has put a 14-day quarantine period in place for all international travellers. Customers are being advised to contact their travel insurance company. “In our 37 years of business we have experienced many security situations and travel disruptions including 9/11 and the ash cloud, but this situation is unprecedented,” a statement explained. “Our professional and dedicated staff are working overtime liaising with the airlines and hotels on our clients behalf.” The decision has brought Pesach sharply into focus for families. Travelink is aware of customers’ concerns as the Festival is just weeks away. “Clients cannot automatically cancel Pesach travel arrangements as the ban may be lifted on March 26th,” they said in a statement. The Government’s directive is currently for a 2-week period so as yet does not cover the Passover period. Travelink are being as flexible as possible during a difficult period. “We understand our customers need to plan Pesach well in advance,” Travelink noted. They have committed to assist where possible.

March of the Living organisers have cancelled its annual Holocaust commemoration in Poland next month due to the coronavirus crisis. This is the first time since MOTL was founded in 1988 the event has been interrupted. Around 12,000 delegates from over 40 countries walk from the gates of Auschwitz to Auschwitz-Birkenau in a 1.5 mile march. Participants include Jewish students, youth movements and survivors. UK delegates were due to take part in a six-day programme culminating in the march on April 21. The schedule included a commemoration event in Bergen Belsen on April 22 that has also been cancelled.
“After consulting with the relevant health bodies and officials, it is with a heavy heart that we are forced to announce the postponement of this year’s March of the Living in Poland,” said March of the Living World chair, Dr. Shmuel Rosenman, in a statement. “Our primary concern is the health of the many participants and the Holocaust survivors who would be joining them. Given that this is an international event involving 110 delegations from around the world, we have a responsibility to take precautionary measures in accordance with the guidelines given by authorities in various countries.” The annual commemoration will rescheduled at a later date.
Israeli SME businesses to get financial boost Israel will support small and medium-sized businesses after Tel Aviv stock exchange indexes fell sharply due to the escalating global coronavirus this week. The Finance Ministry opened a $1.1 billion (NIS 4 billion) credit line for banks to lend money to businesses facing a cash squeeze. “The fact that the global coronavirus crisis is meeting Israel with a strong economy, low unemployment, a high credit rating and a dropping debt-to-GDP ratio will help us,” said Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon in a statement. The Bank of Israel does not anticipate a major economic impact if the virus is halted in the coming months, but is ready to use monetary policy tools if conditions worsen. Israel has taken extreme measures to combat the outbreak. Prime Minister

Benjamin Netanyahu will instigate extreme measures to protect public health. Netanyahu held a video conference with Italy, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Cyprus leaders to discuss cooperation during the ongoing crisis. “We each have our own experiences,” he said. “We see what works, what doesn’t work and we can trade with each other.” Trade and tourism are expected to suffer. “We are working on getting information from hundreds of guides who have had groups and private clients cancel their trips, in order to understand the magnitude of this crisis for tour guides,” said Yoni Shapira, Israel Incoming Tour Guide Association. Restaurant trade is down but the take away sector has boomed. Delivery people leave meals at the door if residents are in quarantine.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 expert advice. Cancelling the event was the only responsible option the organisation concluded. “The health and safety of our guests, staff and volunteers is paramount,” said David S Delew, Chief Executive, CST. “We strongly felt this very painful and difficult decision needed to be taken now.” He added that a later decision would result in more uncertainty and inconvenience for all concerned. St John’s Wood Synagogue announced today that one of their members was seriously ill in hospital with coronavirus. In a statement, the shul said; “They were last in our synagogue on Shabbat morning February 29th and have not been on the premises since. The United Synagogue has spoken to Public Health England on our behalf to ask for guidance. Based on the timings of when the individual was in our synagogue and when he became ill, they were not concerned. They have confirmed that there is no need for members to self-isolate. They have also confirmed that it is safe for activities to continue at St John’s Wood Synagogue.” The Vizhnitz Shul in Israel announced that this week’s Shabbat prayers would be held in private homes, not in shul, due to the virus. Looking ahead, there is concern whether or not Jewish communities will easily be able to celebrate Pesach. Products such as matzot could be in short supply whilst families who traditionally
travel to Israel would have to cancel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced this week that all arrivals must self-quarantine for 14 days and has banned all gatherings of over 100 people. The latest developments will certainly hit tourism as Passover is a key time of year. The global outlook, though, has made the headlines in recent days. “We have called every day for countries to take urgent and aggressive action. We have rung the alarm bell loud and clear,” said WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus after the pandemic announcement. “All countries can still change the course of this pandemic, if countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace and mobilise their people in the response. We are deeply concerned by the alarming levels of spread and severity and by the alarming levels of inaction.” Iran and Italy are the worst hit countries in the battle against the virus that started in China. In the United States, the number of cases has passed the 1,000 mark. Former US Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders cancelled rallies in the presidential campaign. Vice President Mike Pence admitted future rallies would be evaluated “on a day to day basis.” In Europe, Spain’s number of cases have increased dramatically whilst Belgium, Bulgaria, Sweden, Albania, and Ireland announced first virus-related deaths. Over 120,000 people have been infected worldwide and over 4,300 people have died.

Rivlin calls for unity government as election fallout continues BY DAVID SAFFER President Reuven Rivlin has called for compromise from Likud and Blue & White’s party leaders to create a stable unity government in the 23rd Knesset. Addressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz after receiving the final results of last week’s historic elections on Wednesday, aside from calling for a “unity government”, Israel’s president criticised both party heads for a lack of respect towards the Arab electorate. “In the Jewish-democratic equation, every vote counts,” Rivlin said. “In the State of Israel, there are no half-citizens. There are deep disagreements, but no semi-citizens.” Regarding efforts to form a coalition government, Rivlin reiterated his November proposal for a unity government with Likud and Blue & White agreeing to a rotation deal of Prime Minister. “There are many who are looking here with hope that answers will come from this residence,” Rivlin explained. “The answers are for you to find, those whom the public elected as its leaders, and I hereby place the task in hands once again.” The president added, “This residence, and I personally, are at your disposal for any serious and genuine conversation you may wish to hold. Any agreement you are able to come to that produces a stable government that gains the trust of the people will be welcomed. “Among other options, you have the outline I offered at the last elections. I am certainly aware of the criticism of the outline that I presented then, and agree with much of it. But I did not believe there was another way and, even today, the situation has not changed a great deal.“ Israel’s Central Elections Committee confirmed the election results. The final count had Likud as the biggest party on 36 seats ahead of Blue & White with 33, Joint (Arab) List 15, Shas 9, United Torah Judaism 7, Yisrael Beytenu 7, Labour-Gesher-Meretz 7 and Yamina 6. The final turnout was 71.46%, an increase on September 2019 with 69.8%. Of 6,453,255 citizens registered 4,612,007 voted. Netanyahu won most seats after a bitterly fought campaign against the backdrop of the escalating coronavirus crisis but ultimately fell short of the 61 required for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. Gantz without support of Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Lieberman is unable to reach the threshold. As recriminations and a political impasse from the main parties continued since the election there have been death threats against Gantz on social media. Netanyahu’s upcoming corruption trial has also featured heavily in the political rhetoric. As for a unity government, Blue & White’s Yair Lapid said the party wanted that option with Gantz as leader but they could also

Gantz without support of Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Lieberman is unable to reach the threshold form a coalition government with support from the Joint (Arab) List despite the refusal of MKs Yoaz Hendel and Zvi Hauser to back such a proposal. “Both options are difficult, while one is unacceptable,” he noted on Facebook. “The best option is the one Netanyahu rejected outright, a national unity government. That is what we strove for from the very beginning and that is what we still strive for.” Lapid continued, “The only thing he (Netanyahu) is interested in is his three indictments. He doesn’t want unity because he knows he will be unable to legislate an immunity law along with legislation that will effectively destroy the authority of the Supreme Court.” Lapid added that Netanyahu’s goal was a fourth election. “Netanyahu wants more hatred, more incitement, more violence and more money wasted,” he noted. “We must think about what is best for Israel.” While Hendel and Hauser are against forming a minority centre-left government it has also been reported that other Blue & White MK’s are “uncomfortable” with the option. Labour-Gesher-Meretz MK Orly Levy meantime has stated she will not sit in a
minority coalition with the Joint (Arab) List as this option “violates basic norms and values”. Without naming Gantz, Levy accused him of willing to pay “any price” to form a minority government. She noted, “We are all witnessing leaders that promised to act in a trustworthy and responsible manner, involved in recent days in shameful lobbying and willing to pay any price to anybody to put together a minority government. “It is no less alarming that far-reaching decisions like negotiating with the Joint List, including Balad, are being taken by a small group who feel they speak on behalf of the entire (centre-left) bloc. “I will not support a government that leans on the Joint List and Balad and I don’t see myself continuing to be committed to the partnership with Meretz.” Levy confirmed she had informed Labour party leader Amir Peretz of her decision after the election. Meretz MK Tamar Zandberg criticised Levy’s change in stance, labelling her statement as “shameful.” Netanyahu attacked Blue & White’s plans on in a video posted online on Monday. “Gantz is sending his messengers to negotiate with the likes of Balad,” he said. Integration Minster Yariv Levin described members of the Joint List as “supporters of terrorism”, adding that Gantz was “unwilling” to accept the public’s choice in the elections. While Netanyahu viewed the prospect of a minority government, Blue & White held talks with Yisrael Beytenu and Joint (Arab) List to serve “all the citizens of Israel, Jewish and Arab”. Gantz initially met Lieberman after accepting his conditions to join a centre-left coalition. “We discussed the ground principles and decided to cooperate on forming a new government meant to serve Israel and

prevent a fourth election,” he told reporters. “It was a truly great meeting,” added Lieberman. Gantz also met with Labour-Gesher-Meretz Blue to bolster support. Orthodox parties will battle against a centre-left bloc as Lieberman demands include backing public transport on a Sabbath aside from controversial viewpoints on the draft bill and conversion to Judaism. Netanyahu’s impending corruption case came into the mix of political powerbroking. Lieberman said he would support legislation proposed by Blue & White to prevent a Knesset member indicted for criminal offences serving as Prime Minister. Lieberman’s move means it could be passed by the Knesset before a fourth election. The proposed law is supported by Labour-Gesher-Meretz and Joint (Arab) List but can only be presented to the Knesset after new members have been sworn in on 17 March. It is however unlikely to be passed in time to impact on current coalition talks. To ensure the law can move forward, Gantz needs to be asked to form a government so he can replace the Knesset speaker and Knesset Arrangements Committee chair. Yisrael Beytenu said in a statement, “We have decided to take action to promote two bills. First, a bill to limit the Prime Minister to two terms. Second, a bill to prevent MKs under indictment from being candidates to form a government.” Netanyahu countered, “Gantz, who failed at the ballot box, is trying together with Lieberman to steal the decision of masses of Israeli citizens who gave the Likud, under my leadership, a landslide victory.” In the midst of the legal debate, Netanyahu and Gantz declared victory last Saturday after most votes were verified. Netanyahu accused Gantz and opposition leaders of defying “the will of the people”. But as tensions rose, the Knesset tightened security around Gantz following death threats on social media over the prospect of him forming a minority government with Joint (Arab) List support. Hate posts argued that Gantz should share the same fate as former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin who was assassinated in November 1995. “They should murder Gantz at Rabin Square so he could join Rabin,” one user noted on Facebook. A campaign by the Israeli Right has stressed a government with “terrorist supporting” Arab-Israeli lawmakers would be illegitimate. Gantz blamed Netanyahu for the situation and vowed to form a government. “We are just five days after the hardest, most hate-filled election campaign in the history of our nation and Israeli society,” he said. “Netanyahu, the public atmosphere and the threats are very worrying to every national leader.”

WJC slam auction of Nazi items in Canada US livestreams BY NATALIE ASH World Jewish Congress have lambasted a Quebec auction house for refusing to withdraw Nazi material from a sale at an auction. WJC’s Canadian affiliate the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) joined the local Jewish community in condemning the decision. Items included two Nazi honorary medals and a penknife associated with the Ku Klux Klan. A double-sword War Merit Cross that was awarded to Nazis who worked in concentration camps according to Holocaust historian Dieter Pohl. CIJA co-chair Rabbi Reuben Poupko called on the auctioneers to remove the items and examine their conscience in
interest of civic responsibility. His appeals were rejected. “While trading Nazi memorabilia and other items related to racist ideologies is not illegal in Canada, it is morally indefensible to allow entities to profit from items emblematic of the genocide of Jews and the murderous persecution of African Americans,” he said. Auction house co-owner Nicolas Marcoux defended the decision to sell the memorabilia. “If we knew that it could fall into the hands of someone who wanted to make a promotion, we would terminate the transaction,” he said. Avi Benlolo, Toronto-based Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust
Studies, lamented the sale but Nazi memorabilia is growing in Canada. “There is a rising tide of Nazi movements and white supremacist movements collecting and venerating and celebrating this kind of ideology,” he noted. WJC President Ronald S. Lauder is a huge critic regarding the sale of Nazi propaganda. Following news Amazon was selling online an anti-Semitic Nazi-era children’s book, Lauder said it was “bewildering and frightening”. He added, “It cannot be left up to individuals or human rights organisations to repeatedly flag such content on Amazon’s behalf. A more sustainable mechanism must be put in place to keep these items from being posted at all.”
IDF has seamless video information Israel Defense Forces has upgraded its the Digital Army Program (DAP). The system includes advanced video networking which offers forces seamless operational ground or air force video information using classified handheld devices. The DAP has been developed by Elbit Systems and went operational with the IDF around 15 years ago. The advanced version is based on secured video compression techniques. “This is not merely another step for the
DAP, it is a change that provides us with capabilities we did have before,” said Colonel Udi, Merkava MK IV battle tanks commander. “While the new system is based on the mature robust DAP network it delivers tanks information not available before. It provides us with faster connectivity to the Air Force, which greatly improves our fire capacity. Air and ground forces now receive a common operational picture, creating a level of trust that is necessary to allow the IAF to carry out close fire support missions. It really enables
us to better leverage the Israeli Air Force’s precision munitions.” The latest version of DAP was developed in association with the IDF’s C4I & Cyber Defense Directorate. “Inter-connectivity across branches and echelons significantly increases operational effectiveness,” commented Colonel Lior, IDF C4I Directorate. “The DAP incorporates advanced broadband communication capabilities, providing fast operational internet to field forces.”
megillah
The United Synagogue livestreamed the Megillah on Monday night and Tuesday morning for the first time for anyone unable to attend a reading due to the coronavirus crisis. The initiative was streamed from Mill Hill East Synagogue. Writing to synagogue chairs, the US noted that those unable to attend on account of “legitimate Coronavirus considerations” who were are unable to read the megillah or have it read at home they could listen to the reading through a live stream. They added that the facility was only for people meeting the criteria. The ruling followed the US advising shul members to avoid services if they had recently visited an area or been in contact with someone who had recently visited places listed by the government regarding coronavirus. Members were also advised not shake hands, kiss a Sefer Torah, mezuzah or religious book “until the threat is over”. The Board of Deputies has taken precautions according to Government guidance regarding places visited there were a high number of reported cases of coronavirus. The BoD would make alternative arrangements for meetings, conferences and events by using conference call facilities or would reschedule as appropriate.
Lufthansa cancels flights to Israel Lufthansa has cancelled flights to Israel until March 28. The decision regarding flights to Tel Aviv and Eilat by Lufthansa and subsidiaries, Swiss and Austrian Airlines, came into force last Sunday. It followed Israel’s resolution regarding arrivals from a number of European nations including Germany over coronavirus. “The Lufthansa group sees itself forced to make this cancellation for economic and operational reasons, as many passengers are no longer entitled to enter the country,” the group said in a statement.
Israel’s Health Ministry also barred entry to almost all non-residents from France, Spain, Austria and Switzerland last week. Measures come on top of restrictions from mainland China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Macau, South Korea, Japan and Italy. Passengers were advised to check the Lufthansa website for details. Lufthansa has grounded 150 planes, including 25 long-haul aircraft, and cut its flight plan by 25 percent due to the crisis. “It is not yet possible to estimate the impact on earnings”, Lufthansa said. The group has frozen recruitment.

Bibi fails to delay corruption trial Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s request to postpone the start of his corruption trial by 45 days has failed. The State Prosecutor’s Office turned down his request to delay proceedings set to begin on Tuesday. Netanyahu is facing charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. The tax, fraud and financial crimes division said the state did not want Netanyahu to respond to charges on the trial’s opening day but all sides needed to be present at the hearing. Netanyahu’s lawyer Amit Hadad made the appeal to the Jerusalem District Court due to technical issues over trial material. “A few months ago, an indictment has been filed against the Prime Minister, we still have not received trial material,” he said. “We appealed to the court to postpone the hearing for technical reasons, so that we receive the trial material before appearing in court.” Netanyahu says he is the victim of a politically motivated “witch-hunt” and attempted coup. He denies the charges. Proceedings will be similar to a pre-trial where both sides provide evidence. It is expected a list of 333 witnesses

Chabad-Lubavitch ensured the remaining Jews in China celebrated Purim this week despite difficult circumstances regarding the coronavirus outbreak. Megillah readings took place in Beijing and Shanghai. Rabbi Shimon Freundlich, Chabad Beijing has stayed with his community while his family are safe overseas. He led Megillah readings at the Israeli Embassy as services could not take place held at the Chabad center are there is a ban on public gatherings. “Its very special to read the Purim story,” he said. “Chinese people are going through a challenging time, but just as in the story of Purim, salvation is around the corner, as the statistics are already showing.” Rabbi Shalom Greenberg, Chabad Shanghai, returned to China to recite the Megillah with a small group of community members. He said they were celebrating Purim as “any other community in the world.” The only difference was instead of hundreds there would be several dozen people sitting apart as a precaution wearing masks. Rabbi Greenberg organised mishloach manot to all Jews there. He was also contacting community members around the world to visit their nearest Chabad centers on Purim. Both Rabbi Freundlich and Rabbi Greenberg arranged to read the Megillah on the hour every hour for those concerned about exposure to others. After speaking via livestream at Chabad Brisbane’s Purim celebration in Queensland, Australia, Rabbi Freundlich arranged fruit baskets and hygiene supplies for employees at the local Air China office. This followed first hand experience of

witnessing the efforts locally. He had also committed to return on Purim with further supplies. Elsewhere in the region, Rabbi Mordechai Avtzon, Chabad Hong Kong, led celebrations at the local Jewish community centre. The main Chabad center is located in a residential area, as a result, Chabad is renting various venues for the festival including a Sushi restaurant made kosher for a Megillah reading and party. Rabboi Avtzon has remained with the community apart from a brief trip to help raise funds for Chabad centres throughout China. Rabbi Yekutiel Kalmenson, Chabad Ningbo, in China’s Zhejiang province, says emissaries are in close contact with communities around the world. “We have community members who’ve gone to Thailand, France and Israel,” he explained. ”We’re coordinating with friends and colleagues there to ensure they have a place to celebrate the Purim, the way it should be, with unbridled joy.” In Tokyo, Rabbi Mendi Sudakevitch and his wife Chana hosted a Purim celebration with strict hygiene measures in place. “We’ll be checking body temperatures at the door, but I don’t know whether we’ll get a minyan,” he said. With two community members in self-quarantine, Rabbi Sudakevitch has arranged to a home visit to ensure they fulfil the mitzvah. The Sudakevitches were set to be joined by Rabbi Shalom Vaisfische and his wife, Rachel, of Chabad Takayama in Japan’s mountainous Gifu region. In Seoul, Rabbi Osher Litzman, Chabad Korea with his wife, Mussy, described said spirits were “high as always”, noting most community members had left Korea as the virus had spread.

Creative agency designs a solution to the question Of whether or not it’s ok to shake hands in shul
With the world panicking about the spread of coronavirus and minimising physical contact in order to limit the spread of infection, the handshake seems close to being confined to the bin of unacceptable social behaviour. People all over the world are getting creative with their greeting habits in an effort to reduce the risk of contracting coronavirus and doing their bit to help prevent it from spreading. As we have seen in the last few days, world leaders, politicians, royals and celebrities have all been having a go at alternatives, or failing miserably to live up to their own advice. But as the virus spreads rapidly, so does the sense of social awkwardness, behaviour confusion and disease anxiety that comes with each new meeting, not knowing what the other person is expecting or comfortable with as a greeting. A few years ago refusing a handshake was the ultimate social snub, but now it is becoming more and more acceptable to do so, which in turn creates the conundrum of how to
greet when we have been so programmed to act in a certain way. For the Jewish community, handshakes and air-kissing are a part of our culture… in business, in social situations and particularly in Shul! For Creative Clinic, a creative design and branding business run by a core management team of North London Jews, this was becoming an issue. Recognising the problem, the Mill Hill based agency has just launched a range of 14 button badges under the brand name of ‘STOP THE AWKS’. Each of the badge designs has been created to make it easy for the person wearing it to silently and immediately communicate to everyone they meet, just how they are happy to greet and be greeted - thereby instantly eliminating the awkwardness. Creative Clinic Founder and Creative Director, Adam Selwyn comments: “In the last week or so we’ve really noticed just how uncomfortable people are right now when meeting. We’ve had quite a few awkward moments with clients and
friends, at work and in Shul at Purim, where we’ve found ourselves practically dancing around each other as we flap between handshakes and elbow bumps. This all just had to stop, so we sat down together as a creative team to solve one of the most pressing issues of our time. Twenty minutes later we had an idea in place – and after just three days in virtual isolation and lock down, we’ve managed to launch a brand and website with button badges ready to ship. We are committed to stopping the spread of awkwardness whilst also doing our bit to reduce the spread of coronavirus. It’s a simple idea that could have saved a lot of embarrassment for Boris, Phil, Angela and Donald if they’d been wearing a STOP THE AWKS badge.”

NEWS IN BRIEF
Israeli farmers hit by budget cuts Israeli farmers bordering the Gaza Strip are set to lose NIS millions in budget cuts. Government funds had compensated farmers forced to harvest crops early to prevent fires caused by incendiary balloons destroying fields. Produce could not be sold at a full price, making subsidies essential for farmers to survive. With militants now launching incendiary balloons across the border, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has slashed up to NIS 1.5 million from a NIS 8 million budget to battle the new terror. Israel Farmers Association head, Avshalom Vilan, has called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to intervene as farmer livelihoods are now affected. Minister of Agriculture, Tzachi Hanegbi, said the initiative to support early harvesting was to help negate damages to farmers most vulnerable to terror attacks. He added that The Ministry of Finance would deal with costs if explosive balloons return.
The full range of button badges are available to buy now from (1 for £2.50; 4 for £7.50; 6 for £10.00) with 100% of profits from badges sold being donated to charity.

Kisharon celebrates International Women’s Day International Women’s Day (March 8th) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. To mark International Women’s Day 2020 earlier this week Kisharon is delighted to share service user Jessica’s story and give an insight into her day to day life in celebration of her personal achievements as a woman. Hilary Newmark, Director of Fundraising from Kisharon said, “2020 is a time for people around the world to start thinking of women as equal. The work we undertake with our female service users, empowers women to lead life as strong and confident women.” Jessica has always lived with her parents, so moving last year into supported living was a big step. Jessica was keen to move and felt confident to take on the exciting journey in her life. Moving has enabled her to develop and improve her independence skills such as cooking light meals with staff’s support and carrying out laundry with minimal support.

Her weekly shop is done on a Sunday and her hobbies include colouring and painting and listening to music. Since moving she feels she has the support to be an independent woman. Jessica’s aspirations include having a family of her own, being engaged in a full-time job and working with children. Jessica is fully settled and enjoys staying at Kisharon and the support she is provided with. This has been attested to on numerous occasions by her family who are so proud of her achievements. Jessica is being provided with the highest level of support in line with organisational policy and procedure for her to gain more independent living skills and to live a happy and fulfilled life. The Kisharon team of support workers create a bespoke plan for every individual, taking into consideration their needs and the number of support hours required. For more information please visit: www. kisharon.org.uk/ Earlier this month, Immanuel College was proud to honour its current and ex-Head Masters at its 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner held at St Johns Wood Synagogue. The entertainment in the night was outstanding - Jonny Turgel, ex-Head Boy of the College, sang beautifully and was followed by the amazingly talented Immanuel students Avi Miller, Sam Nagioff, Ophra Atar and Maya Spronz, all giving world-class performances. One could hear a pin drop when Rabbi Dov Cowan, an Alumnus of the first Year the College opened, spoke of his love for the school and how it prepared him for life religiously, socially and academically. Overall, the evening was a thoroughly wonderful and inspiring event which raised much-needed funds for an amazing Jewish institution.

Norwood gets the Purim party started Norwood began its Purim celebrations in style – with a party for more than 250 service users, staff and volunteers at The Hive in Barnet last Wednesday night [4 March]. The evening’s fancy dress competition was jointly won by residents from Station Road and Carlton Avenue but the spirit of the festival was fully embraced by everyone – from support workers to the charity’s chair, Neville Kahn, who was unrecognisable in
his groovy disco outfit. Guests were entertained with a disco party courtesy of DJ Henry, and hamantaschen were kindly served up by Norwood’s new chair of fundraising, Rachael Davis-Stollar, and her daughter Allegra. From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON In this week's news it was reported that Julian Fellowes, novelist, peer and writer of Downton Abbey, feels his opinions (in general) have been automatically discounted since he recently turned 70. I think I'll have to add that in my experience when a person reaches their late thirties or early forties they often find their opinions are considered worthless, Even worse if you're female, and one's radiant glow is on the wane. You may feel you have passed the zenith of youth, and your face may reflect not simply your age, but your journey of life! In my case my face has completed several marathons, and I'm less than half way to 120. So, oftentimes us ladies hit a double disadvantage, where men are frequently regarded as greying and distinguished, and we often look 'lived in.' By the time one reaches this age, young people are not really listening to you (especially if they're YOUR young people) and folks may no longer acknowledge you, or hold doors open for you. But, when you hit 70 you risk becoming 'invisible!' Everybody is going to get old - unless like myself, you're VERY unlucky - but they don't often see it from where they're sitting. They think they'll be Forever Young. A bit of news for LEGO fans, Jens Nygaard Knudsen (78) was a model designer, creating the famous mini figures. He joined lego in 1968 and felt the human element was missing. His basic design was so adaptable that it was used in the castle and pirate themes, and for children's favourites including Darth Vader and Harry Potter. As a direct result of his minifigure design Lego had to employ 500 extra staff and made him their chief designer. By 2018 nearly 8 billion minifigures had been made in a total of 1000 designs. All from the inspiration of one man. If you are of a somewhat nervous or sensitive disposition I suggest you look away now, as there's a very recent story which is so barbaric, that it's barely repeatable. In summary it concerns the murder of police officer, Andrew Harper. The 3 vile human beings who caused his death were towing a stolen quad bike. PC Harper shouldn't have even taken the call to respond, as he was at the end of his shift, but he did. He became entangled in a crane strap as the villains drove off. I'm not going to give further details on this as it made me distraught, and you will be too if you look it up, or hear it on the radio, but in all my years I've seldom heard of something more evil. He died in utter agony - they valued his life as nothing, and the quad bike as priceless. So all I can say is the perpetrators must be given life, to mean WHOLE life tariffs. For something this despicable a death sentence wouldn't be inappropriate, even although I do know it doesn't exist. Along with the readers of this paper our huge sympathy goes to the widow of PC Harper, who was only 28 years of age. A musical update this week concerns the pianist Sir Andras Schiff, who I heard recently playing with the Orchestra of the

Age of Enlightenment. He comments that audiences of today are rather ignorant as to what makes a 'good' performance. His view slated by critics - is based on the fact that an audience which would have been around at the time the classical repertoire was written, would not just have been educated people, but they would likely have been able to play instruments - woodwind, piano, brass. They would have had family soirees, would probably have sung in harmony in church or in choirs, and therefore they would have some notion about what a good performance or a bad performance was. Today's audience are largely musical 'window shoppers' (non players), blinded by wizardry, pyrotechnics or by speed, as opposed to tone, timbre, nuance. These subtleties are lost, I would agree, on 99.5% of an audience and many critics no doubt as well. Schiff, who played Brahms 1st and 2nd piano concertos on consecutive evenings, has just made a recording of the 2nd Concerto with the AOE. Not the first time this musician has played it, of course, and by the way Schiff is 66, and there's not a musician alive who would consider him past his sell-by date. He is vivacious, ferociously energetic and ranks amongst the best players in the world. Now to something much more serious. Further to my comments last week on coronavirus, where a member of the NHS staff told me that they were expecting to have to curtail outpatient services, more recent updates predict that cutbacks will also significantly affect radiotherapy. The P. M. is further predicting that 20% of the workforce may stay at home and self isolate. Cynically I add that there will be quite a few work-shy individuals enjoying a well earned rest…. This fallout of staff has already started in China and Italy. Now for cancer patients we have but three options: chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, aside from a zero action philosophy (not really recommended). Chemotherapy, the first line of defence, perhaps requires the least specialist of staffing in that your drugs are administered by specialist nurses, rather than oncology
doctors; radiotherapy perhaps requires some very expert radiographers to administer targeted therapy, and surgery obviously requires the expertise of a high-volume surgical centre with surgeons who have a reduced mortality rating on their CV. So, cancer patients need one of these three. One simply cannot do nothing and let cancer cells run amok - it's inhumane. Now for the gritty part. I'm going to say something which may be perceived as a bit controversial, and if I upset any readers, it is truly NOT my intention. I am championing for equality. You'll see why if you read on…. They are talking about 'prioritising' the more curable cancers. Let me call them the 'A' group, and 'B' group.' The A group would include leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins etc. Professor Karol Sikora (Rutherfield Cancer Centre) says those cancers that are not curable, but are slow growing - my B group - including lung cancers, pancreatic cancers etc, could be 'treatment delayed' by a month, and it wouldn't make much difference to outcomes. Really?! Who is being cavalier about the 'outcome?' I have to take issue with the latter comment because for someone who finds themself diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which brings a dismal survival of perhaps only 8 - 14 weeks, delaying it by 4 weeks would be an absolute disgrace. This has nothing to do my me falling into that bracket, I just think it's iniquitous. Keep in mind that 14 week guess-timate when I remind readers I had to wait 7 weeks to be given a biopsy, and a total of 9 weeks from diagnosis to begin chemo, because of an admin error in the NHS. We remind ourselves they are obligated to commence treatment for patients on the cancer pathway within 8 weeks, but with pancreatic, that's really pushing your luck. I met patients who had a biopsy within a week, and a Whipple operation 10 days later. Someone like myself, currently clocking up 18 months, is well outside the norm. My GP recently called me his 'miracle patient,' because in his career he has lost only one person to pan-can, and they didn't hang around for long. If my response to this cancer and 'my biology of disease' is perceived as unusual, then for the more 'usual' stage 4 person, picked up after their symptoms force them to visit their doctor, they will likely meet their maker in 4-6 months, even with treatment. Ergo, a month of delay and allowing further spread of disease is absolutely unacceptable. On the contrary, some might actually say that patients with the most survivable cancers should NOT get priority because they're going to survive anyway, I don't know. My own mother, ז״ל, had bladder cancer, which was nominally treated, but the medics knew this wouldn't bring about her denouement. It was a slow growing cancer, (apparently even s l o w e r in the elderly), and in fact it was her heart and advanced age which took her first. But had she had something like mesothelioma, a cancer brute on anabolic steroids, often picked up at a late stage and lethal, we would have pushed with every ounce of our being for
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
aggressive treatment. Pancreatic may be slow growing, but when it finds you, it has already booked your one-way ticket to Bushey! No time then to shilly-shally. Hypothetically then, those in the first group could present or be treated 6 weeks later and would still survive. The pancreatic/ lung patient who presents with metastatic disease (lungs, liver, peritoneum) has a probable survival window of 6 weeks, if untreated. Therefore, let's at least TRY and help them extend their lives. We are not all old, debilitated or unworthy. Even if we were, SO WHAT!!! There is a duty of care, and a human right to fair and equal treatment. During the Holocaust, members of the Judenrat sometimes adopted a similar attitude, saying… 'Well, they're elderly / infirm / disabled' etc etc, they were going to die anyway, so we should send them first!' (on the transports). I'm sure there were people amongst them with leukemia, bronchitis and very simple health conditions, which would have been fairly easily treated, but nobody was interested. [The Jews couldn't, and the Germans mostly wouldn't, although there is evidence of the occasional humane German doctor who at least tried]. Their mentality might have been bang-on, if following Darwin's theory of 'survival of the fittest': but we cancer patients are not on a death-march, where we succumb to cold, beatings and physical exhaustion. This is the 21st century and we are fighting a virus, not ebola, or aids. Many of us in the B category are simply fighting to survive. I say, we should all get fair and equal treatment. It's not like we are queuing up for cosmetic surgery, or something trivial. They will have to cut back on non essential surgeries or procedures instead. The NHS must NOT de-prioritise patients like myself! Now to lift the mood a little. I do hope you've all had a exuberant, action packed and fun-filled Purim, dressed up to the nines, singing your hearts out and raising tzedaka. We have celebrated Mordechai and Esther, put Haman firmly back in his box, and probably had our sugar quota until 2021. Remember, if you will, the diabetes warnings from Her Majesty's Department of Dentistry (sorry, I've just invented that one) but I'm sure the BDA and the GMC would both agree.... sugar is really, really bad for your health. If all else should fail, there's always your annual MOT at the dentist. Ours is tomorrow! Aaargh. Now, not wanting to be a complete harbinger of doom, but I'm obliged to remind you there's only 4 weeks to Pesach. I'm sure Lord Fellowes would encourage you to watch Downton Abbey, if only to glean some old fashioned cleaning tips. Unless, of course, you've begun your chometz blitz already. Bowel Cancer:
What you need to know
Mr Lee Dvorkin MD FRCS (Gen Surg) Consultant General, Laparoscopic & Colorectal Surgeon Private secretary: Jayne on 07867 491761 E mail: secretary@leedvorkin.co.uk Consultations available at: BMI Hendon, The Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth and BMI Cavell www.leedvorkin.co.uk
Bowel cancer is a malignant tumour situated anywhere in the large bowel (colon) or back passage (rectum). Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK and second biggest cancer killer. Over 42,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the UK and over 260,000 people in the UK are currently living with bowel cancer. Bowel cancer is most common in the over 60s and is rare in people younger than 40 years old. However, more than 2,500 new cases are diagnosed each year in people under the age of 50. Survival from bowel cancer is very good if the cancer is discovered early with a 93% survival for early cancer, but if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body very few people survive 5 years. The majority of cases develop from pre-cancerous polyps (tiny growths in the bowel), which if left untreated can develop into cancer. WHAT ARE THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF BOWEL CANCER? The symptoms of bowel cancer are variable and can include: • Diarrhoea or loose stool for over 3 weeks • Blood in the stool • Losing weight • A lump in your abdomen Some cancers can bleed and cause anaemia which may lead to tiredness and breathlessness If you are suffering from any of these
symptoms it is very important you see a bowel specialist for investigation WHO IS MOST AT RISK OF BOWEL CANCER? The biggest single risk factor is age. More than 8 out of 10 bowel cancers are diagnosed in people aged 60 or over. The chance of getting bowel cancer also goes up if there is a strong family history. This means having several relatives with bowel cancer, especially if they are particularly young. There is a slightly increased risk in the Ashkenazi Jewish population and in men. Other factors thought to increase the risk include smoking, obesity and eating excessive red meat, animal fat and sugar. A reduced risk has been noted in those who exercise and eat more fibre and pulses. There are some medical conditions that increase the risk of bowel cancer and these include; Ulcerative Colitis, Crohns Disease and type 2 diabetes. HOW IS BOWEL CANCER DETECTED? The two most common investigations to diagnose bowel cancer is a colonoscopy (a camera examination of the large bowel) and a CT scan. Some patients are diagnosed through the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. In most of the UK, screening is offered to everyone aged 60 to 74 years old (50-74 in

Scotland). Every 2 years patients are asked to send a stool sample to the laboratory. If blood is detected in the stool a colonoscopy is offered to see if there are early signs of cancer or pre-cancerous polyps. Bowel cancer screening reduces the risk of dying from bowel cancer by 16% and so it is important to participate. If you are over 75 years old in England and Scotland, you can ask for a screening kit by calling the screening helpline number. HOW DO YOU TREAT BOWEL CANCER? The best treatment for bowel cancer is an operation to remove the cancer and its surrounding lymph glands. Nowadays, these operations are performed by keyhole surgery and patients typically spend less than a week in hospital. For cancer in the rectum, radiotherapy is sometimes used to shrink down the tumour before surgery. Often, surgery is all the treatment that is needed but if the cancer involves the lymph glands chemotherapy is recommended and this can last for 6 months. Surgery can also be used to remove certain cancers that have spread to the liver or lungs but this is not always possible. If you are concerned about your family history or ongoing symptoms, please ask your GP to refer you to a Colorectal Surgeon.

Coronavirus facility opens at Rambam Hospital using new Israeli tech Rambam said in a release that a new remote monitoring system will be used for the first time in Israel in this new department. The system was developed by the Israeli start-up Biobeat. The Rambam Hospital in Haifa finished preparations ahead of the opening of a new coronavirus department on Tuesday. The facility will be on its own floor, isolated from the rest of the hospital. Construction and logistic teams worked in the past week to cut an entire floor of the hospital in two: a hospitalization wing on one side and rooms for the team on the other side. The department will also have a separate ambulance entrance and elevator. Air from the rooms will be pumped through a filter before it exits the building. The new department will be able to hold 30 patients, with two rooms that will be able to treat children and an additional room for patients who have been
intubated due to acute respiratory failure. A special coronavirus team was trained by Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, which opened its own coronavirus unit last month. The department will be staffed by 30 nurses who all volunteered for the job, as well as doctors from a range of different departments. The team will be specialized for this department and until further notice will not work in any other department. Patients will have phones and video equipment in their rooms in order to talk with family and medical professionals, with the aim of minimizing contact between patients and other people. Rambam said in a release that a new

remote monitoring system will be used for the first time in Israel in this new department. The system, developed by the Israeli start-up Biobeat, includes smart monitoring stickers that will replace the currently used monitoring methods. The stickers will be put on all the patients and will allow continuous monitoring of breathing, saturation, pulse, blood pressure, body temperature and other essential metrics. The results will be continually streamed to an information system, allowing the monitoring of every patient without the need for physical contact. “The establishment of the specialized department for the intake of coronavirus patients presents us with many challenges, some of which we learned for the first time. Some of them we’re creating from scratch, because the experience throughout the world regarding everything connected to the coronavirus is limited,” said Dr. Michael Halbertal. “There is impressive volunteering and I am sure that we can stand before the

This is part of our mission as medical professionals.” The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported the lowest single-day figure, leaving Chinese health officials optimistic that the number of new COVID-19 cases has tentatively stabilized. The fatality rate for the disease is around 2%, which is lower than that of the related Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) but higher than the rate of 0.1% for seasonal flu.” To find out more about Technion, please contact us info@technionuk.org

Dear Rabbi For the past several years I have stopped celebrating Purim. Where I once enjoyed coming to Shul and listening to the story of the Megillah, I have become more sceptical in my older age. When I think of the Purim story and the way Jews fared I am questioning why we need to celebrate. I think Jews today are so disconnected from their faith and frankly if we were faced with a Haman today, we would all fail miserably. Purim has become little more than an excuse to drink and party and I don’t need to do that under false pretences when I can do it any time of the year. Mark Dear Mark There’s was a policeman sitting in his car outside a Purim party the other night hoping to really catch someone on the night. He got very excited when he saw one man come staggering out of the party swaying to and fro holding a set of car keys. The policeman fixed his eyes on him waiting with glee. The guy tried one car, then another. The policeman was delighted – it had made his wait worthwhile. Meanwhile people are leaving the party but this policeman had his prey – waiting to pounce. Finally the guy gets into the right car, and first the window wipers go on. Then the radio is blaring. More and more people are leaving the party and finally when all is still, this man starts up his engine and proceeds to drive.
The policeman, his moment has arrived, zooms out in front of him and orders him out of the car. The man gets out. “Blow into this.” The man blows into the breathalyser. Nothing. The policeman changes it for another one. Still nothing. “These must be broken. You’re going to have to come down to the station with me.” The man looks up to him: “You know you’re wasting your time don’t you?” The policeman looks to him: “Why’s that?” “Because I’m tonight’s designated decoy.” Throughout the course of Jewish history there have been decoys of different sorts; different allures – people or situations that look to distract us from our higher calling. Nowhere was that more evident than in the Purim story as Haman sought to have the Jewish nation abandon their faith at risk of annihilation. What’s compelling is that during the entire twelve months that the threat was lingering, not one Jew capitulated. We remained firm and steadfast in our commitment to our ideals and our traditions. You might question how we would fare, facing a similar situation. You might suggest that most of us would either buckle or flee. I maintain that you are one hundred percent wrong. I cannot suggest that we would all remain steadfast but I would like to think that a strong majority of us would. I need not look further back than the Holocaust and consider the many Jews who risked their lives to put on Tefilin
Tehillim Psalm 133 This week’s Psalm is one of the smallest in all Tehillim. With just three verses it might look insignificant, but it is packed with some powerful messages. At a time where the whole world is changing over the Coronavirus, we see how Hashem truly runs the world. ‘Barachu et Hashem kol avdei Hashem, haomdim bveis Hashem baleilois - Bless Hashem, all you servants of Hashem, who stand in the house of Hashem at nights.’ According to the commentator ‘The Malbim,’ this verse refers to the genuine servant of Hashem will never abandon his post, even when things are dark and gloomy like the dead of night. ` The Talmud in Menachot goes further and says that Torah Scholars who wake up in the middle of the night to learn the sweet Torah of Hashem. In Hashem’s eyes, this self-sacrifice is considered as if they have done the service in the Holy Temple. The Psalm ends with a blessing. ‘May Hashem bless you from Zion, Maker of heaven and earth.’ This refers to the Priestly blessing, which was offered every day in the Temple. We learn from here that
or light Chanukah candles or do whatever else, even when in the midst of the hell of the camps. There were those who went to their deaths singing Ani Ma’amin – “I believe,” or Shema Yisroel. That’s the power of the indomitable Jewish spirit. That is the secret of Jewish survival. When Mark Twain asked the question, “What is the secret of the immortality of the Jew?” the answer lay in the very question. The answer is in the word “Jew.” Where does the term Jew stem from? Jew comes from Judah, just as the Hebrew for Jew, Yehudi come from Yehudah. And yet, if you comb through all the Biblical texts you will never find the term Yehudi used until the Purim story, where we are introduced to Mordechai haYehudi. Why? Because he was the first real Jew as he personifies the constant challenge of the Jew in exile. Mordechai is living in the 4th Century BCE, following the destruction of the First Temple. He is also encountering the very first real threat of Anti-Semitism as he confronts a tyrant committed to the annihilation of him and his people simply because they are a different nation, they have different rules, a higher set of standards. And yet Mordechai does not kowtow to the demands of the enemy, nor does he cower in the face of any pending threat. He stands up for his principles, and thereby implants this sense of pride in the hearts of the masses. When Haman issued his decree of annihilation, not one individual considered abandoning their faith in order to be
spared death. At that moment, we all became “Jews.” The name stuck because for the next 2500 years, our Jewishness is constantly tested. Under countless regimes – both friendly and hostile – we struggle with supposed friends and obvious enemies who seek to undermine our spiritual integrity. And like Mordechai, time and again we earn the name Jew, sometimes through more peaceful means other times through oceans of blood and tears. So, regardless of how detached or distant you might think many Jews might be, each of us has a soul within which is an extension of the Divine, and therefore cannot, nor does it want to ever sever that bond. Purim celebrates the salvation of a singular

This Tehillim is a refuah sheleima for Shmuel Yosef ben Faiga Chaya whenever Hashem blesses the Jewish people, it comes from Jerusalem. When you stand at the Western Wall, you should realise that the flow of blessing to the whole world comes from that place. Utilise the opportunity! If someone studies Torah, purely for the sake of Hashem and not for ulterior motives, he has the power to change the whole world, like it was made for himself! As it says in the Talmud, in Sanhedrin, ‘bishvili nivrah haolam – for my sake the whole world was created.’ As our planet battles the deadliest virus in a generation, may we all be healed quickly, Amen.

people: a people whose learning, festivities, sacrifices and badges of honour are unique in the family of man. On Purim we celebrate, we eat, we drink. Purim is about being different. Being a Jew is about being different. And for that we have every reason to celebrate our existence – to celebrate life – every reason again and again, to say l’chaim! Now stop being a cantankerous old man and a killjoy, go say l’chaim and live a little – as an individual and as a proud Jew. Can I take this opportunity of thanking all you dedicated readers for these past three years. It’s been real but there is always a time to move on. I’ll be moving on to pastures anew and wish you all much blessings and success in all. L’chaim & Shalom!

The first verse of the sidra is, “When you count the heads of the Children of Israel...” Whatever the count was, it changed from day to day. Population statistics never remain static, which is why the only way to measure numbers is as of a particular date and a particular hour, and even then there is no guarantee of accuracy. Metaphorically the changing numbers of the people of Israel is a symbol of everything in life. Nothing ever stays as it was. This certainly applies to the individual human being. One is never the same today as yesterday, never the same tomorrow as today. A Chassidic rabbi said, “If I still thought at the end of a day that I was the same as at the beginning I would not want to live any more.” Faust could say to a moment, “Stay a while since you are so pleasant”. Judaism says, “Work on yourself every moment; never freeze your personality in any one mould.” Life has to be dynamic, not static, if it is to have meaning.

covenant. The Book of Exodus reports the request from Moses to G-d, Har’eni na et derachecha, “Please show me Your ways” (Ex. 33:13). G-d’s response was an expression of self-definition, though it did not define G-d’s nature but His deeds: “The Lord, the Lord, G-d, compassionate and gracious, patient, abounding in kindness and truth, preserving kindness for thousands of generations, forgiving iniquity, willful sin and error and not destroying (sinners) completely” (Ex. 34:5-7). Though this passage tells us something about G-d, Maimonides insists that G-d has no attributes in the normal sense of the word. Maimonides holds that we cannot really say anything certain about Him though if we resort to the via negativa (“the negative way”) we can state what He isn’t. To declare that He is, really denies that He is not; to say He exists negates the possibility that He is non-existent; to say He is good denies that He is evil. We cannot posit “attributes of essence”
Continuing along the path of the righteous, Ramchal now turns to the Middah of Chassidus - Piety. Not to be confused (although in principle largely compatible) with the “Hassidic” movement founded around 1740 by the Baal Shem Tov, Chassidus is a millennia-long recognised approach to service of Hashem by acting beyond the letter of the law. Ramchal first confronts “Misunderstood Chassidus”
AARON IS A PUZZLE
The hardest thing to understand in the Golden Calf narrative is the involvement of Aaron. He was known as a fine human being, devoted to his brother Moses, dedicated too to the service of G-d. Yet he was prepared to give it all away to placate the people who clamoured for a deity they could see, feel and touch. Never mind that it would be an idol and that Aaron would be false to all that he believed in. Jewish commentary does its very best to extricate Aaron from trouble. These are some of its suggestions. Worried that Moses was away for too long, he tried to play for time in the hope that his brother would be back and handle the situation before any real harm was done. Believing that the women would refuse to give up their jewellery, he felt the Golden Calf would never happen. When the jewellery did come good, he said he would build the altar himself, thinking that this would be a good
A Chassidic rabbi said, “If I still thought at the end of a day that I was the same as at the beginning I would not want to live any more.”

which appears to have been the practice of many in his time. To properly understand what Hashem wants from us both on a basic level and on elevated levels, requires depth of understanding, not superficiality. Ramchal is critical of people who perform incorrect actions in the name of Chassidus, for they earn it a negative reputation. This leads people to associate Chassidus with obsessive confessions, day-long crying and self-affliction. To the extent that there were people who would immerse themselves
delaying tactic. In the end, when nothing seemed to have worked, he put off the celebrations for a further day, still living in hope that Moses would return any minute. Had he been Moses and not himself, Aaron would have thundered, “No! No! No golden calf! No idolatry! No sin!” But Aaron was a man of peace – apparently peace at any price. Peace is a supreme ideal, but sometimes the price can be too high. We should never forget Chamberlain and the shame he brought back from Munich. Rabbi Apple served for 32 years as the chief minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, Australia’s oldest congregation. He is now retired and lives in Jerusalem. Rabbi Apple blogs at http://www.oztorah.com
in ice or snow (not because they were halachically required to or out of depth of understanding for its appropriateness, but) simply for the sake of “punishing themselves” for their sins. Our sages taught, “Lo am ha’aretz Chassid” – ignorance and Chassidus are incompatible. How, then does one gain understanding of Chassidus? Based on the Talmud’s famous words, “Fortunate is he who is great in Torah and toils in Torah and gives pleasure to his Creator”, Ramchal explains with a parable. A son who loves his father does not merely adhere to his father’s express commands. As soon as the father
has hinted that a certain action is desirable, the son pre-empts the father’s explicit request and understands that carrying out a certain action will give pleasure to his father and therefore rushes to carry it out. Similarly, basic service of Hashem is great (and let us pray that we one day reach the levels of the earlier chapters of Mesillat Yesharim, Amen) but one who truly loves G-d will not satisfy themselves with strict adherence to Mitzvot. They will seek to go further – to not only learn Torah, as is obligatory, but toil in it and achieve great levels in its knowledge. Similarly, with all Mitzvot.
Rechilus revelations. Say Feivish finds an uncomplimentary photo of himself online one morning and is not sure who carried out the crime. The most likely candidate was Yankel, who himself had his windscreen smashed by Feivish the previous night (caught on CCTV). So Feivish approaches Yankel and says, “Who posted the photo online of me drunk on Purim?” Even though Yankel knows that it was actually Shmerel who posted the photo and that Feivish actually thinks Yankel did it, it is forbidden for Yankel to reveal the
information to Feivish. (If it was necessary to reveal the information based on the laws of when Rechilus is justified, then it may be the correct thing to do.) All Yankel should say is: “I did not do it”. (If one serves on a committee and a deflective statement such as this may cast a bad light on his fellow committee members, then extra caution must be taken even with a response as mild as, “It wasn’t me” or “I disagreed with them”.) NEXT WEEK we will G-d willing conclude this study of the Chofetz Chaim.
Chofetz Chaim: Part 34 RABBI MORDECHAI ULLMAN Following on from the last segment where we discussed the numerous conditions that must be in place to allow the revelation of a fault in a purchase. It is extremely unwise for one who is asked as to the value that a buyer got for a purchase. For example, one may be unaware of price fluctuations and render judgement on a seller, thereby transgressing numerous prohibitions. Moreover, by saying, “You were ripped off”, the speaker is very possibly trying to define a Torah
prohibition of overcharging, when their arithmetic skills are not necessarily strong… All that is achieved in these circumstances is the spread of hatred. When the potential buyer pulls out of the purchase, it can lead to physical and verbal abuse too. So, when asked to comment on someone’s purchase, one must review the laws of Rechilus thoroughly, and then G-d assists a person to not stumble. The Chofetz Chaim next discusses circumstances where someone is put in an uncomfortable position with regards to

Where Am I? BY RABBI BINNY FREEDMAN “And the people saw that Moshe tarried in coming down from the mountain. And they gathered around Aaron and said to him: ‘Arise, and make for us a god, which will go before us, for this man Moshe who took us up from the land of Egypt, we know not what has become of him.” (Shemot 32:1) The entire debacle of the golden calf happened because Moshe was … late?! Why did G-d allow, arrange, or call for Moshe to be … absent? This paradigm is one that we have encountered before, starting with Adam and Eve’s mistake in eating from the tree of knowledge (Bereishit 3:1-11). The snake seems determined to persuade Eve to make the greatest human mistake ever made. The real question, however, is not why the snake is there, but why G-d isn’t? Throughout the Torah, G-d is ‘there’, and then He is ‘not there’. Where was G-d when Noah was all alone in a new world, planting vineyards amidst the terrible aftermath of
total destruction? Where was G-d when Avraham, having just arrived in the Land of Israel at G-d’s command, was confronted with the terrible famine which forced him down to Egypt? Where was G-d when Yosef finds himself all alone in the pit of despair? And who better to ask this question than our generation? For twelve horrible years G-d was ‘not there’, and we were all alone in Nazi-occupied Europe amidst a world gone mad. And then, in the blink of an eye, once again, G-d was ‘there’, as, against all the odds, a ragtag band of refugees built a state which was a Garden of Eden from the sands and barren rocks of the wilderness. So what is going on? The Talmud (Baba Batra 75a) tells us that Moshe was like the sun, and Joshua was like the moon. Moshe had such direct contact and relationship with G-d that looking at him was as close to seeing G-d as a human being ever achieved. Joshua, on the other hand, is one step removed from G-d. His relationship
begins essentially through his relationship with Moshe. Moshe’s tenure as leader of the Jewish people is a recreation of the Garden of Eden when G-d was everywhere you looked. Joshua, on the other hand, was like the moon, where the light is only reflected, from the sun that you cannot see. The problem with the desert experience, was that when G-d is everywhere, then where am I? This is a challenge we often experience in life and in our relationships; sometimes someone is so ‘everywhere’ there is no room for anyone else. This is why very often, children of extremely successful parents are so challenged, because if parents give their children everything, all the time, then the parents are really there, but the kids really aren’t, often leading the children to rebel, almost as though they are shouting out: “Here I am! I’m here!” This is why the Jewish people rebel so much in the desert because G-d is everywhere, I am left wondering: where, or for what purpose am I? So G-d steps back, and Moshe does not bring the Jewish people into the Land of Israel, because once G-d has shown us the world the way it is meant
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
to be, it only becomes a world for us, when we then make it so. One of the greatest gifts we can give our children, and indeed to all of our relationships, is to know when to take a step back, to let someone else begin to shine. In a healthy relationship, you have to know when to be the sun, and when to let yourself become the moon. Perhaps this is what is really going on at the foot of Sinai. Moshe is so ‘there’ he has become their direct relationship with G-d. But that is not what Judaism is meant to be; we were never meant to stay in the Garden of Eden, we were simply meant to experience it, as a gift, so that we could journey through the wilderness in search of what we had once tasted, this time earning it on our own. Precisely when G-d seems so…absent, we have the opportunity to step up and make the world better with our own hands. Rabbi Binny Freedman is Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Orayta. In 2015 the world of non-fiction books was taken by storm by a toughtalking self-help book entitled “Extreme Ownership: How US Navy Seals Lead and Win,” written by two ex-Navy Seals, Jocko Willink and Leif Babbin. The main message of the book, which became a New York Times number one bestseller, is that every good leader needs to be ready to take charge, to make hard and crucial calls and take ultimate responsibility for their actions, without looking to blame others.

The Ohel Yehoshua offers a beautiful explanation of this cryptic discussion. The Ramban, unlike Rashi, understands that the parshiyos in Sefer Shemos are written in chronological order. Klal Yisroel were given the mitzvah to build the Mishkan in Terumah and Tetzaveh, before the chet ha’egel (in this week’s parsha). Then, after the fallout from
3. What type of compliment did Moshe give Betzalel at the end of the conversation, that he was ‘in the shadow’, which is usually a pejorative term?
2. The Mishkan was a miraculous place in which the Shechinah rested, so why did Betzalel bring a proof to the correct order of construction based on the ‘way of the world’? In fact, we find elsewhere (see Menachos 86b) that instructions in the Mishkan often deviated from the worldly norm, lest people think that that this was a house that Hashem ‘needed’.
1. Did Moshe Rabeinu, the closest ever ‘talmid’ of the Ribono shel Olam, really forget the basic detail of the order in which to build the Mishkan?
This passage is clearly puzzling, on several fronts:
To receive this via email please email subscriptions@oneg.org.uk
Before the chet ha’egel, in Terumah and Tetzaveh, the pesukim instruct the
Just as the 613 different parts of the human body (248 limbs and 365 sinews) align to the 613 mitvos, so too they align to the 613 different parts of the Mishkan. More specifically, the keilim represent a person’s inner essence, whereas the outer housing represent a person’s outer actions.
Whilst Moshe’s tefillos were successful in getting the plan to build the Mishkan back in place, the status quo had nevertheless changed. The way of serving Hashem was now different. The Mesilas Yesharim (Chapter 5) writes that a person on a higher level is driven by his inner spark, which will spur him to do righteous outer actions. The inner purity motivates outer actions. That was Klal Yisroel before chet ha’egel. In contrast, a person on the lower level has to do outer actions to arouse an inner drive. As the Sefer HaChinuch (mitzvah 16) writes, “a person is moved by his actions”. That was Klal Yisroel after the chet ha’egel.
the chet ha’egel and Hashem’s decision to forgive, which culminated on Yom Kippur, came Vayakhel and Pekudei.
The Gemora (Berachos 55a) reports a conversation between Moshe and Betzalel about the Mishkan. Moshe told Betzalel first to build the keilim (vessels) and then the outer housing [i.e the planks and the coverings etc]. Betzalel responded, “Moshe Rabbeinu, the way of the world is first to build a house and then put the keilim in, and yet you are telling me to do the opposite. Where will I put the keilim [if I make them before the outer housing]? Perhaps Hashem actually told you first to make the outer housing and then the keilim?” Moshe responded to Betzalel: “Perhaps you were in the shadow of Hashem [betzel-Kel] and you knew”.
To suggest an idea or a response to the ideas exchange please email ideas@oneg.org.uk
Perhaps this also explains why Moshe complimented Betzalel that he was ‘in the shadows’. A shadow is an imitation of the real essence of a figure or item. After chet ha’egel, that was the new status quo – to work via the outer layers in order to get to the deeper reality. M
Moshe Rabeinu, with his deep love for Klal Yisroel, wanted them to reach for and aspire to the level that they held before their fall from grace and he therefore hung on to the original instruction. He did not forget anything; he simply remained idealistic. Betzalel, on the other hand, realised that this was no longer possible. Their new level was a reality that had to be accommodated. The outer part of the Mishkan now had to come first. This explains why he brought a proof from the normal ‘way of the world’ – Klal Yisroel had become more grounded, more ‘wordly’ and less ostensibly spiritual, forced now to start from the outside and work inwards.
making of the keilim before the outer housing of the Mishkan. This reflected that the Jews were able to lead with their inner essence, which would dictate and shape their outer actions. Yet after the chet ha’egel in Vayakhel and Pekudei, the order in the pesukim switches, with the outer housing before the keilim, reflecting the new era and the lower level.

Ultimate ownership or just one of the team? The “bestselling authors” make it clear: this is a fine line which we must walk, balancing between two seemingly opposite inclinations.
It is quite telling that three years later, the same two authors brought out their next book entitled “The Dichotomy of Leadership”, in which they felt the need to explain that in order to be a good leader, one must also be a good follower.
Why were we required to give half a coin instead of a whole unit? Surely a whole unit would be preferable, symbolising so to speak the full dedication and responsibility of every Jew towards the Mishkan, and ultimately to his people?

פרשת כי תשא
A person should not limit himself to this type of prayer alone. There is another type of tefillah called sicha. Sicha means conversation. We can converse with Hashem and discuss our personal, mundane problems of life.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Hisbodedus is a discussion with Hashem. Tell Hashem how you are feeling. Discuss your hardships, your worries, your deliberations, your frustrations and your fears. Talk to Hashem about what is important to you. Talk in your own language and on your level. Tell Him about your troubles. Describe your hardship at work with your difficult boss. Share your fears of how you’re dreading your dentist appointment and how you can’t seem to get out of bed in the morning.
Rabbi Nachman teaches us to converse with Hashem. He calls this hisbodedus. This is a time where a person has a conversation with Hashem; he talks to Hashem about his personal life and petty problems. This is not necessarily talking about lofty ideals of Torah and middos, but talking about the topics that are pressing on his heart.
Why is that? This boy has davened over a thousand shmoneh esreis. Why does he say that he never spoke to Hashem? This is because although he davened the shmoneh esreis, he never spent time conversing with Hashem.
Sometimes I see a teenager who goes off the derech r’’l. When I ask the boy how he is able to leave Somebody who he had so many conversation with, he answers, “I never had a conversation with Hashem.”
This approach of conversing with Hashem will then help us connect to
When a person engages in this kind of “talk,” it becomes an enjoyable experience to converse with Hashem. A person feels like Hashem is listening to him on a personal level. He will feel that Hashem is his best friend, like it says, “Yedid nefesh av harachaman.”
A person should feel that Hashem is connected to every little detail of his mundane life, not only his spiritual growth. A person should realise that Hashem’s connection to us is not limited to Torah, shidduchim, or his children’s chinuch, but rather to every single aspect of our life. A person should always talk to Hashem about things that are happening in his personal life and discuss all of his personal problems with Him. This creates the connection.
Why do we stop and add in our personal requests? We want our tefillah to be a connection to Hashem. We want to build a relationship with Hakodosh Boruch Hu. By adding our personal requests and talking to Hashem in our language, that creates a connection to Hashem.
Hisbodedus is a conversation; it is not the tefillos that Chazal established. In the tefillos, we talk about the most lofty spiritual topics, but before the second “yihiyu l’ratzon” at the end of shmoneh esrei, it is common practice that we don’t say “oseh shalom” right away. Before we finish shmoneh esrei, we stop and add our personal requests to Hashem. We talk to Hashem.
We can talk to Hashem in two different ways. One way is talking to Hashem about very lofty topics, as we daven in shmoneh esrei, hashiveinu avinu l’sorasecha, korveinu malkeinu l’avodasecha v’hachzireinu bi’shuvah shleimah lifanecha. We daven to Hashem for hatzlacha in learning, an opportunity to get close to Him, and that we should be zocheh to do teshuvah. These are tefillos on elevated spiritual matters. This is talking to Hashem on an extremely high level.

That’s why it is called tefillas mincha and not “afternoon prayer.” Mincha is a special prayer, unlike the other prayers. Mincha is a special time where a person should put his emphasis on creating the beautiful relationship with Hashem by discussing his personal affairs, thereby connecting to the Ribono Shel Olam. M
This is because when we speak to Hashem about our personal matters, then a personal connection is created between us and Hashem. When there is a genuine, strong connection made between us and our loving father, that is when our tefillos are answered.
Chazal teach us that a person should always be careful with mincha, because Eliyahu HaNavi was answered only by tefillas mincha. Why was Eliyahu specifically answered by mincha?
Mincha is more than an afternoon prayer. Mincha comes from the word “linchot” which means to land from a high place. Mincha is a time to “land”, to go down from the high spiritual topics and discuss with Hashem the personal issues in our lives, even if they seem low and unimportant.
Avrohom Avinu established the prayer of shacharis. Shacharis is a very holy prayer where a man wears his tallis and tefillin and often includes kriyas HaTorah. Yitzchok Avinu established tefillas mincha as it says “Vayeitze Yitzchak lasuach basadeh.” Lasuach comes from the word sicha – a conversation.
Hashem also when it comes to important issues like shalom bayis and chinuch yeladim.

Ki Tissa Moshe is up the mountain receiving the Torah from Hashem, and learns about the Ketores, spices that were to be brought every day in the Mishkan, as well as the Kiyor - the large container of water for the Kohanim to use to wash their hands when arriving in the Mishkan to serve Hashem. When Moshe is about to come down the mountain with the Luchos he is saddened to see the Jewish people dancing around an Egel - golden calf. Sadly, there were groups among the Jewish People, who thought it wise to create an image to serve in place of Moshe. As good as their intentions may have been, the second of the ten commandments may never be transgressed. So, sadly the Luchos were broken, and the pieces were placed in the Aron. Now, the Jewish people are taught about some of the laws of the three main Chagim and the ban on mixing meat and milk. They journey of the Jewish People through the Midbar continues.

Ki Tissa In a nutshell Parshat Ki Tissa begins with the Torah’s commandment to count the Jewish people. The way this is done, in order to prevent a plague (through Ayin Hara) is by each person donating half a shekel towards the Korbanot. Another piece of furniture for the Mishkan- the Kiyor, for the Kohanim to wash their hands when coming in to serve. We are then taught about the Ketores spices – including the less-pleasant-smelling Chelbena, which teaches us to try to be inclusive when it comes to Mitzvot – involve your less affiliated friend and see that the overall “scent” then turns sweet. The appointment of Betzalel is repaeated and placed next to the Mitzva of keeping Shabbat – all to remind us that as holy as building the Mishkan or Beit Hamikdash is, it does not come in place of keeping Shabbat. Moshe is now ready to come down the mountain and is given two Luchos of stone. Downstairs, some of the Jewish people have become confused as to why Moshe
is delaying his return (they miscalculated by a couple of hours and got even more mixed up when the Satan showed an image of Moshe appearing to have died. And, sadly, only days after receiving the 10 commandments, the Jewish people transgressed the second one and created a god out of gold. (If they were confused, why were they to blame for their decision? Answer: we all have bad moods and times of confusion, but that is not the time to make decisions on our own…) Aaron collects the gold from the men and throws it into a fire and out comes a golden calf. To add fuel to the fire, the Jewish people ate, drank and were merry round the calf and this caused Hashem to seek to bring an end to the Jewish nation. But our beloved leader Moshe begged Hashem to forgive the Jews and, although 3000 Jewish people had to be put to death for their involvement in the plague, the rest of the Jewish nation achieved some level of forgiveness. When Moshe came down the mountain and saw the

extent of the sin and the joy with which is was committed (another lesson, if one sometime stumbles, at least don’t go against the will of Hashem with joy), he smashed the Luchos. We are then taught the 13 Middot – manners in which Hashem interacts with mankind – see if you can find them in the Parsha and note the double expression “Hashem, Hashem” which teaches us that Hashem is still there for us even if sometime we stumble. The Jewish people are warned again against making covenants with the nations of the land of Israel, lest they remain there and serve as a bad influence on them. We are once again taught about the Yamim Tovim, the three festivals Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot, and not to mix meat and milk. Finally when Moshe returned to the Jewish people after another 40 days, his face shone too brightly for the Jewish people to bear, and so he needed to cover his face with a veil/mask when he was in front of the people.

Faithfold player-manager Ben Kfir said, “I was a good game but we didn’t capitalise on our chances. but I pleased with the fitness and work on the ball.” Club de Chigwell’s clash against Hampstead Ducks was postponed. In cup action, Hertswood Vale Peter Morrison Trophy semi-final clash was postponed due to a coronavirus scare. Borussia Barnet moved into the David Woolf Division Two Cup quarterfinals with a 2-0 win at Paris Saint-Jewmain. Ben Sharer and Ollie Hart struck the goals that keep Borussia’s league and cup double aspirations on track.
Reich 1st with the same games played, so goal difference will be immaterial. In the Harold Feldman Trophy, Leeds Maccabi progressed to the Semi Finals by knocking out Reich 1st 4-1 on the 3G at Frederick Road. Reich actually beat Leeds in last year’s final. A slender 1-0 lead at half time was improved upon in the second half by the Yorkshiremen who ran out worthy winners
in the end. Only negative was a red card for a Leeds player towards the end of the match having already been sin-binned by ref Jahangir Hussain. So next Sunday, it will be Leeds who will now host Maccabi Yellow at 10.30am whilst Reich Masters will be at home to Maccabi Blue at Frederick Rd 3G with 12-2pm pitch booking.
Manchester football news This was a big week for the Yellows netting a dozen times and conceding just twice in the last two league matches. They disposed of Reich Masters 6-1 on Wednesday night, after a close first half which saw a 2-1 scoreline at the break. Oli Grant scored a brace with Adam Goldstone, Simon Rabbinowitz, Marc Maynard and Benji Loofe also for Maccabi. Today, another emphatic 6-1 win over
their fellow Blues means they are 1 game away from taking the title to a ‘winner takes all’ scenario against Reich 1st. On the mark this morning were Adam Lavin (3), Oli Grant (2) and Rafi Klyne with Carl Peters gaining a consolation for the Blues. Next up for Yellows will be Reich Masters at the end of this month and providing they take all 3pts, they will be a point behind

Premier League update BY DAN SILVER AND YOSSI SAUNDERS Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been searching for a significant moment since being handed the job as Manchester United manager while basking in the afterglow of a caretaker’s honeymoon period. As he strolled down the touchline in an Old Trafford downpour at the conclusion of Manchester United’s first Premier League double over Manchester City since 200910, the first since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, this felt a little like it. It was all done in the euphoria of a 2-0 victory but as Solskjaer shielded his eyes and tried to find his family in the crowd, his name resounded around the stadium and it looks like the heavy burden of this mammoth job is, in part, being lightened. This thunderous encounter was a personal nightmare for Manchester City’s normally reliable Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson, who gifted Solskjaer’s side both goals in sharply contrasting fashion. He allowed Anthony Martial’s routine shot to squirm under his body from a quick Bruno Fernandes free-kick on the halfhour and then, with seconds left, threw a clearance straight to Scott McTominay, who showed great technique to send a long-range finish, struck first time, into the net in front of a delirious Stretford End. Fernandes once again confirmed what a shrewd piece of business his signing was from Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese has that touch of class and creativity while United had another outstanding performer in defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who won his battle with Raheem Sterling as he hounded the England star for 90 minutes and beyond. Solskjaer has been struggling to convince the sceptics this season, as one of football’s superpowers lurked on the margins of the Premier League’s top four. And yet, with a run of 10 games unbeaten and the addition of an operator who looks a genuine class act in Fernandes, Solskjaer now at least has the opportunity to clear away some of the doubts come season’s end. United have a favourable draw against Austrians LASK in the last 16 of the Europa League, travel to Premier League strugglers Norwich City in the FA Cup quarter-final and now stand only three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League and five behind Leicester City in third. United may still be light years away from the glory days of old but victories such as this sustain hope, and the atmosphere inside Old Trafford as Solskjaer’s side first held on to their advantage and then sealed the win was reminiscent of days gone by. The clouds that looked to be closing in during those first months of the season have, for now, rolled away. Sean Dyche fears football is in “dangerous territory” after his Burnley side were denied a penalty in their draw with Tottenham.

Solskjaer has been struggling to convince the sceptics this season, as one of football’s superpowers lurked on the margins of the Premier League’s top four. The Clarets boss felt Chris Wood should have been given a penalty after Spurs’ equaliser, but the striker did not go down under Davinson Sanchez’s tackle. In the end, Dele Alli’s penalty after Wood’s opener was enough to earn Tottenham a point. “The game has got to be really careful now with which way it is going,” said Dyche. “If he [Wood] flails his arms and goes flying across the floor, I bet he gives it.” The Clarets took a deserved first-half lead when Wood tapped home the rebound after Hugo Lloris had spilled Jay Rodriguez’s longrange shot. At that stage, Jose Mourinho’s side looked completely out of sorts but the half-time introduction of Lucas Moura and Giovani lo Celso sparked the visitors. It was Lo Celso’s superb through ball that forced a rash challenge on Eric Lamela by Ben Mee and Alli scored from the penalty spot for his 50th Premier League goal. In a frantic finish, Lo Celso almost scored with a curling 20-yard effort before Lloris denied Matej Vydra from point-blank range.
The result means Spurs have now gone five games without a win in all competitions - their worst run since they went seven without a victory in the autumn of 2016. As the dust settled on Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Burnley, a rather surprising statistic came to light. The point at Turf Moor was Mourinho’s 27th as Spurs manager. Since he was appointed as Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement in November, only Liverpool and Manchester City have accumulated more. By that assessment, the Portuguese is doing a pretty decent job. So why doesn’t it feel like that? Simply put, Mourinho’s inability to reform Alli was used as a central striker by Mourinho, who is trying to find a solution to the lack of striking options at his disposal following the injuries to Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. Alli’s goal was his first in nine matches in all competitions. But, ultimately Mourinho’s insistency on neglecting to select Troy Parrot, Tottenham’s highly rated 18 year old striker and
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
instead play a central attacking midfielder at striker is utterly absurd. Alli looked more of a threat once Mourinho changed the shape of his side at the break but he lacks the physical presence to unsettle Burnley’s defensive pair Mee and James Tarkowski, whereas Parrot would be ,more suitable to play in that physical role. Mee in particular was a commanding presence once Tottenham sorted themselves out after the break and ensured goalkeeper Nick Pope was not truly tested. If you think about examples over the years of young players being thrown into the spotlight as the last and only resort, Marcus Rashford being one, then it should seem like Mourinho has nothing to lose playing Parrot. Yet, his old style management techniques demand that the youngster is not starting in the first team. The result leaves Tottenham four points behind Chelsea, having played a game more. Unless there is a swift reversal of fortunes, their four-year run of top-four finishes will come to an end this season. Other results include, Carlo Ancelotti enduring a miserable return to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea thrashed his Everton side to boost their top-four Premier League hopes. Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers thought his side looked back to their best as Jamie Vardy ended his goal drought in their convincing win over Aston Villa. Finally, Newcastle boss Steve Bruce says Allan Saint-Maximin’s ability is “scary” after the winger put in a match-winning performance at 10-man Southampton.
