The Jewish world was once again plunged into darkness this week with the passing of world renowned inspirational lecturer and dynamic educator Rabbi Zechariah Shimon HaKohen Wallerstein, who passed away in Flatbush, NY, on Monday. Famous for helping many jewish girls return to their faith, Rabbi Wallerstein founded Ohr Naava Women’s Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Rabbi Wallerstein, 64, became an icon in the Jewish world due to his vision, principles and support for the Jewish community. Rabbi Wallerstein had been ill for a number of years. He helped thousands of students across the religious spectrum. Ohr Naava was groundbreaking as it addressed Jewish women’s needs. Programmes took place at Ateres Naava Seminary, Tiferes Bnos Yisroel Seminary, Ateres Miriam Seminary, Bnot Chaya Academy, Hakaras Hatov Initiative, Ohr Naava Shidduch Initiative, The Yutta Zicherman Crisis Center for Intervention and the therapeutic Ranch at Bethel. Born in Boro Park and raised in Monsey, NY, Rabbi Wallerstein studied at the Yeshiva Spring Valley and Mir Yeshiva. An internationally acclaimed sought-after speaker, he travelled the world. At his levaye, it was mentioned that even though each Pesach he was sought after as a

Councillors hope to get elected BY ADAM MOSES
Jewish councillors will be hoping to be elected to councils in England, Scotland and Wales today. Voters will make their selection in 32 London boroughs and major cities including Manchester and Leeds where there are large Jewish communities. Over 4,000 councillors in 146 councils in England, all seats in 22 local Welsh councils and 32 local Scottish authorities are up for election. In Northern Ireland a new government is being selected. Party leaders have criss-crossed the country in recent days appealing for votes. The elections will test the national mood with the rising cost of living, “partygate” scandal and how Covid-19 was handled. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Labour leader Keir Starmer, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, Welsh Labour Leader and First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford and SNP leader and Scottish First Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer Minister Nicola Sturgeon will scrutinise results as the country looks ahead to the next Jewish population in the country. Israel is celebrating 74 years since independence. Fireworks have been a regular feature at Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv but there will be none this year. Veterans have campaigned for an end due to post-traumatic stress disorder. “The barrage of fireworks is the same as a burst of gunfire for us,” Ehud Amiton, a former soldier with PTSD told Israeli Army Radio. “We don’t oppose the celebrations, we oppose the noise.” Israel’s Culture Minister Chili Tropper announced last month he backed veterans. “For most Israelis fireworks maybe a nice image in the sky, but for them it is the sound of gunfire and battle,” Tropper wrote on Facebook, “They have fought enough. They have paid a heavy price. This year we are reaching out to them.” The decision to cancel fireworks has been criticised in some quarters. “There is some

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Defence Minister Benny Gantz, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi are amongst dignitaries attending. The ceremony includes a flyover by Israeli Air Force fighter jets and helicopters. Israel honours fallen soldiers and victims of terror
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and President Isaac Herzog at the Memorial Day ceremony at the National Memorial Hall for Fallen Soldiers on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem BY DAVID SAFFER
Israel honoured fallen soldiers and victims of terror in a Memorial Day (Yom Hazikaron) State Ceremony before celebrating its 74th Independence Day. A two-minute siren signalled the start of memorial services at 52 military cemeteries across the country. Bereaved families, government figures, security forces, police and other bodies attended. There have been 24,068 deaths, including 19,852 IDF soldiers and 4,216 civilians killed in terror attacks since the State of Israel was formed. The past year has seen 56 IDF soldiers and 33 civilians killed in terror attacks. Four more died of wounds sustained in attacks from previous years. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett gave a powerful address at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He said, “We look around us and we see new faces, tormented faces. The faces of those who have unwillingly joined the large Israeli family of bereavement. The courage of our fighters has been an integral part of us, going back to the bravery of our forefathers, through the dawn of Zionism, and through to today.” Over a million and a half Israelis were expected to visit military cemeteries on Memorial Day. “This is a uniquely Israeli phenomenon,” said Bennett. “This remarkable participation is testament to our commitment as a nation to our fallen and to the mutual responsibility that flows in the veins of Israeli society. We are all together here, and we have one fate, one mission.” Addressing Israeli citizens, Bennett said, “We are fighting a cruel and bloodthirsty enemy. Day after day, we are reminded
of the fact that the journey is not yet over. Instead of building their lives and futures, our enemies do not relinquish their desire to destroy our lives.” He continued, “Our response to our enemies is an iron wall of strength. Violence and terrorism are not natural phenomena or a predestined fate that the State of Israel must accept. “We will strike not only those who harm us directly, but also those who dispatch others to harm us. The era of granting immunity for the instigators of terrorism is over. The terrorists who carry out attacks are not the only ones who will pay a price, but also those who sent them. “Any regime that funds terrorism, arms terrorists or gives the order to carry out terrorist attacks will not be able to hide anymore in cowardice from afar. They have already begun to pay the price, which will only grow higher. Our enemies will be met with more initiative, more determination, more innovation. We are determined to face the next challenge, if we are forced to, more prepared and better trained, to surprise rather than be surprised and to strike the enemy a harsh and decisive blow. We will continue to grow so much stronger that, eventually, our enemies will understand that their dream of destroying us is hopeless.” Bennett added that Israel never forgets those who are missing or wounded who came home from war. President Isaac Herzog said, “Here, in this sacred place, we tell the story of our life here. It is the story of day-to-day heroism, the heroism of choosing to live in Israel. Here, at the memorial for these dayto-day heroes, their names are inscribed side by side forever. From all across the
land, from all communities and faiths, a uniquely special Israeli mosaic, a mosaic of grief and pain. A mosaic of pride.” Herzog and First Lady Michal have visited families of loved ones in the present wave of terrorism. He noted, “We have met grieving yet inspirational families, pained and in agony, yet strong and proud. We have met young widows and orphan children, we have met parents and loving relatives, sisters, brothers, partners; we have met them all. And what astonishes us time and again is their internal resilience, their cohesiveness as families, and their unimaginable strength.” Herzog added, “Since the dawn of Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel, we have had to face the hostility of those who do not wish to see us living here. Even in recent months, and even this week, hatred and murderers have also attacked us without mercy. And this time, too, terror has not won, nor shall it win. The State of Israel is stronger than ever, stronger in spirit and might, responding with an iron fist and steadfast spirit against every attack and every threat.” Herzog said the establishment of a Victims of Acts of Terror Memorial will reflect the story of the heroism. Israel’s President spoke at the opening State Ceremony at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Tuesday night. He said, “Our sons and daughters, who fell in defence of our state, fought together and fell together. They did not ask, nor did anyone ask them, who was right-wing and who was left-wing. Who was religious. Who was secular. Who was Jewish and who was not Jewish. Nor did grief pose these questions, to them or to you. They fell as

Israelis, defending Israel.” He added, “Our hearts, punctured by pain, must not be allowed to make us forget the mighty journey that we have undertaken. A journey of generations of wandering, a journey of hope and fulfilment. A journey that culminated with immense pride, with an exemplary state, a state for whose existence the heroes and heroines of Israel’s wars have fallen”. Across the country hundreds of local ceremonies took place. Defence Minister Benny Gantz attended a name-reading ceremony on Mount Herzl with the IDF, police and prison service for fallen servicemembers engraved on the walls of the memorial hall. “People of Israel, all these faces and names that stand here before us, are waiting for us to read them out loud, proving that their memory stays with us,” he said. “May we use the memory this year to continue growing as individuals and as a society, to respect each other, to accept our differences, to strengthen Israeli society that is made up of these thousands of bricks that unite us all as a strong and vigorous nation. May we remember that we have no other country, we have no other state, and we have no other Israeli society. May the memory of the fallen be blessed and their names and stories kept and engraved in our hearts forever.” Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi said events allow time to reflect those who have died. “This relentless pain is present at all times but reminds us of our freedom, independence and security,” he noted. UK Ambassador to Israel, Neil Wigan, tweeted in Hebrew, “We stand by Israel and remember the courage, dedication and love of those who have been lost.”

Community tributes to stalwart Leonie BY DAVID SAFFER
Jewish organisations have paid tributes to community stalwart Leonie Lewis following her death last week. Leonie, awarded an MBE by the Queen for services to the Jewish community in 2017, passed away just six weeks after being diagnosed with lymphoma. Rabbonim and community leaders attended the funeral at Bushey New Cemetery last Friday. A member of Pinner Synagogue, Leonie became a joint vice president of the United Synagogue. An adviser to the Children’s Aid Committee and assessor for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, her association as a director of the Jewish Volunteering Network dates back 30 years. Devastated JVN staff, trustees and volunteers said in a statement that their founding director was “everyone’s friend”. “In the words of her family, ‘she loved everyone and worked for every good cause’, they noted. “There is so much to be said about Leonie and we will, right now our thoughts are with her family.” Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis led communal tributes, “Leonie gave kind-hearted and selfless service to numerous organisations and was a source of inspiration for many. She loved people and Judaism and personally guided, strengthened and transformed many of our communities.” A towering figure at the US, as co-chair of US Women in 2013, Leonie was one of the US’s first female trustees and instigated changes for women to chair US shuls. Michael Goldstein, US President, said, “Leonie was passionate about everything

she did, supporting a wide variety of causes both within and outside of the Jewish community. She was a powerhouse, a tour de force, a connector of people and organisations who used her vast experience to improve our community. Leonie was
always eager to share her wisdom with others, exemplifying the Jewish concept of lilmod ul’lamed, to learn and to teach.” Goldstein recalled Leonie as her Israel tour leader and passion she had for Israel and the Jewish people.
5 MAY 2022 Noting her roles at the US as a Trustee until she stood down in 2020, he commented, “Her impact on our organisation was immense. Following a strategic review in the 1990s she was invited to work for the US to head up a new programme designed to re-energise the organisation and our communities. Leonie of course excelled in the role and what she created became our Community Division which continues to provide support to our shuls and beyond, becoming, as she called it, “the engine room of the United Synagogue”. She epitomised what the US stands for, reaching out and welcoming all. Leonie was passionate about ensuring women’s voices were heard and listened to in our communities and across our organisation, becoming co-chair of US Women and one of our first female Trustees.” A longstanding member at Pinner, Goldstein said, “Whenever anything needed doing at the shul, Leonie was sure to say yes. She was the volunteer other volunteers looked up to. This is what allowed to her to flourish for so many years as the director of the JVN. Leonie knew how to engage and support volunteers precisely because she had a lifetime of volunteering herself.” Board of Deputies’ Michael Wegier knew Leonie when she ran The Association of Jewish 6th Formers (AJ6) in the early 1980s. He said, “I followed her subsequent career in many communal organisations. She was quite simply ‘The Professional’s Professional’. Vision driven, emotionally intelligent, utterly dedicated, and always available to assist colleagues and young professionals emerging from all parts of our community. It is astonishing to think that we will no longer see her at communal events and be able to share a conversation. But her legacy is enormous.” Leonie represented the Jewish community as a founder and trustee of the Faith Based Regeneration Network and Co-Chair of the Faiths Forum for London. After she received her MBE in the New Year’s Honours list, Leonie said, “The nicest thing is receiving such wonderful messages, letters and calls from so many people. It’s very touching to know that in some small way I really am making a difference.”
CPS reinstate “religiously aggravated” charges BY SIMCHA ABIR
Campaign Against Antisemitism have welcomed the Crown Prosecution Service reinstating the “religiously aggravated” element of assault charges against Abdullah Qureshi. Various communal organisations contacted the CPS including CAA who revealed the antisemitic element had been dropped. Abdullah Qureshi, 28, from Dewsbury, pleaded guilty last month at Thames Magistrates’ Court to four counts of common assault, a count of criminal damage and of wounding or grievous bodily harm. Charges related to assaults last August in Stamford Hill when five religious Jews were attacked. Stephen Silverman, CAA Director of

Investigations and Enforcement, said, “In a violent spree, Qureshi attacked innocent Jews as he came across them in the street, from a young child to an elderly man. We applaud the Shomrim for reporting these incidents and the police for identifying the perpetrator.” He added, “We welcome the CPS’s decision to reinstate the aggravating element to the charges, but it must be said that it is disappointing that it took sustained outrage from the Jewish community to bring this about. Polling shows that a majority of British Jews do not believe that the CPS does enough to protect them. The CPS must recognise that its choices have a serious impact on the Jewish community and it must strive to do better.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl commented, “We are pleased to hear that in this particular instance the

CPS has reinstated religiously aggravated charges. We look forward to meeting senior CPS representatives in the near future to discuss how to further address longstanding concerns about failures to properly charge those accused of antisemitic behaviour.” In one incident an Orthodox Jewish man was struck in the face with what appeared to be a bottle. In another a child was slapped on the back of the head, a 64-year-old victim was left unconscious suffering facial injuries and a broken ankle. Two further incidents were also alleged. The incidents received media attention. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, condemned an “appalling attack”. “Let me be clear, racist abuse and hate crime, including antisemitism, have absolutely no place in our city,” he said.

Golev saved life of fiancée during terror attack BY LILLY JOSEPH
Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of Vyacheslav (Daniel) Golev following his murder in a West Bank terror attack in Ariel last Friday. The 23-year-old security guard was laid to rest in his hometown of Beit Shemesh last Sunday. Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov and MK Keti Shitrit attended the ceremony. Golev was fatally shot at point-blank range. He is the 15th victim of terror attacks since March in Be’er Sheva, Hadera, Bnei Brak and Tel Aviv. Israeli leaders praised Golev as he saved the life of his fiancée, Victoria Fligleman, who he was helping guard a community checkpoint. They were due to marry next year. IDF officers arrested two Palestinian terrorists, 19-year-old Yahyah Maree and 20-year-old Yousef A’ssi, suspected of the attack in Qarawat Bani Hassan near Ariel after a 20-hour manhunt. Shin Bet are questioning the suspects. Relatives have been arrested for possibly
aiding in the attack. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said, “There is no terrorist whom we will not reach and settle accounts with. Our war with terrorism is lengthy. Together we will win.” He added in his weekly cabinet meeting, “This wonderful couple was just beginning their life together, the heart breaks. This wave of terrorism requires the entire security establishment to make the maximum effort.” Bennett thanked and backed the IDF, ISA and Israel Police for their efforts. Defence Minister Benny Gantz commented, “The State of Israel has always defeated terror and we will do whatever it takes, on all fronts, any time and by any means to defeat it again in these times.” Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai praised officers. “The arrest is a determined message that embodies Israel Police’s policy, which operates on all fronts and with all its units, including the special units, in order to thwart acts of terrorism and arrest anyone who harms or seeks to harm Israeli citizens and members of the security forces,” he said.

within it a balance, we memorialise the history of the past evil in order to secure a better future. Our work in fighting antisemitism continues and we are grateful that the majority of states, representing the entire political spectrum, adopted the IHRA definition as an important standard in the battle against antisemitism and Jew hatred.” Governor Dunleavy reportedly told The Algemeiner, “The Holocaust must never be forgotten. Antisemitism is an evil that threatens all of us as it challenges the core values that bind us as Americans. I issued a proclamation today that seeks to remind us of tolerance and to commemorate Yom HaShoah.” Around 200 institutions endorsed the IHRA definition in 2021 according to a study in March. Australia, Estonia, Guatemala, Poland, South Korea and Switzerland adopted the definition, the Philippines followed this year. In the US, some 60 colleges and universities joined along with 39 non-federal governments and 96 NGOs and other groups last year.

Lavrov blasted over Hitler “Jewish blood” comments BY ADAM MOSES
Israel and world leaders have condemned Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for claiming Adolf Hitler had “Jewish blood”. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has demanded an apology from Russian Ambassador to Israel, Anatoly Viktorov. Lavrov made his incendiary comments on Italian TV programme Zona Bianca last Sunday. Discussing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Jewish roots, Lavrov linked the Ukrainian government to the reviled Nazi leader. “In my opinion, Hitler also had Jewish origins, so it doesn’t mean absolutely anything,” he said. “For some time, we have heard from the Jewish people that the biggest antisemites were Jewish.” Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Lavrov’s statement was evidence of Russia’s “deep-rooted anti-Semitism”. He commented, “His heinous remarks are offensive to President Zelenskyy, Ukraine and Israel, and the Jewish people.” Lapid described Lavrov’s comments as an “unforgivable and outrageous statement” and a “terrible historical error”. “Jews did not kill themselves in the Holocaust,” he explained. “The lowest level of racism against Jews is to accuse Jews themselves of antisemitism.” Lapid added, “My grandfather was killed by Nazis. To say that Hitler was of Jewish origin is like saying that Jews killed themselves

and we cannot forgive such a comparison. It enrages me not only as Foreign Minister but also as a son of my fathers who was put in the Budapest ghetto. He was not put there by Jews. He was put there by Nazis. The Nazis persecuted the Jews and killed six million of them. Ukrainians were not Nazis. Only the Nazis were Nazis and they had conducted a systematic eradication of the Jewish people.” Viktorov was called to the Foreign Ministry to clarify statements. “The Russians should correct their mistake and open history books,” Lapid said. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett echoed Lapid’s sentiments.
“His words are untrue and their intentions are wrong,” noted Bennett. “The goal of such lies is to accuse the Jews themselves of the most awful crimes in history, which were perpetrated against them, and thereby absolve Israel’s enemies of responsibility.” He added, “No war in our time is like the Holocaust or is comparable to the Holocaust. The use of the Holocaust of the Jewish people as a political tool must cease immediately.” Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, Dani Dayan commented, “Most of his remarks are absurd, delusional, dangerous and deserving of any condemnation. Lavrov deals with the reversal of the Holocaust, turning the victims into criminals, based on the promotion of a completely unfounded claim that Hitler was of Jewish descent. Equally serious is calling the Ukrainians in general, and President Zelenskyy in particular, Nazis. This, among other things, is a complete distortion of the history and an affront to the victims of Nazism.” World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said, “Comparing any Jew, let alone Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, to Hitler is beyond the pale, and accusing Jews of antisemitism feeds into the agendas of the worst antisemites and neo-Nazis.” Lauder called on Lavrov to publicly retract his comments to avoid surging a global antisemitic fire. Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich commented, “The statements have rightly been labelled as antisemitic by Israeli and Jewish
leaders worldwide. Whether this provocative statement was just a misstep or whether it was an ominous sign of a new Kremlin policy towards Jews, remains to be seen.” Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi was horrified, describing the remarks as “obscene”, Canada’s Justin Trudeau labelled them “ridiculous and unacceptable.” Italian Senator Laura Garavani said the interview was an “offensive spectacle”. “The network acted as a sounding board for Russian propaganda by letting Lavrov speak undisturbed, denying the crimes he is committing without any cross-examination,” he explained. Ruth Dureghello, Rome Jewish community president said, Lavrov’s comments were “delusional and dangerous”. “This is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to pass by in silence,” she added. Russia’s Foreign Ministry, since the tirade of criticism, accused Israel of supporting neo-Nazis in Ukraine. The ministry in a statement that Lapid’s comments were “anti-historical”. For decades there has been an unsubstantiated conspiracy theory regarding Hitler’s unidentified paternal grandfather being Jewish due to his personal lawyer, Hans Frank. Whilst waiting execution in Nuremberg prison, Frank wrote a memoir where he claims Hitler told him to investigate rumours he was Jewish. The conspiracy theory is dismissed by noteworthy historians.

One in seven Jews around the world is strictly Orthodox according to a new report released by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research. The report is the first attempt to create estimates of the global Charedi population which is projected to rise to one in four or five by 2040. JPR estimate around 2.1m people of a total global Jewish population of 15 million. The figure accounts to around 80% of the total growth. JPR projects the Charedi population may double in size by 2040. “This report capitalises on new resources and advances made in the methods of estimation, and is the first time in the history of this subject that such estimates have been calculated”, said report author Dr Daniel Staetsky. Dr Jonathan Boyd, JPR executive director, commented, “The rapid growth of the Charedi population is changing the nature of the Jewish world. It has significant implications for how Jewishness is understood and seen going forward, both by Jews and others, and it has to be understood fully to ensure that the needs of the growing Charedi community are met in terms of housing, education and other community services. Community leaders need to pay much more attention to these demographic dynamics, and start preparing for what is likely to be a very different future.” Among key findings the global Charedi

figure is 14% of the total Jewish population in the world. Israel and the US account for about 92% of all Charedi Jews. Europe hosts 5%, the rest are in Latin America, South Africa, Canada and Australia. Outside Israel and the USA, the three largest populations are in the UK (about 75,000, or 25% of British Jews), Canada (30,000, 8%) and France (12,000, 3%). While the world Jewish population has been growing by approximately 0.7% per year over the past decade, the Charedi population is growing by 3.5%-4.0% annually. Charedi rates of growth are very high due to high fertility and low mortality.

Politicians pay tribute to Gilon BY LILLY JOSEPH
Tributes have been paid across the political divide to former Meretz MK Ilan Gilon who died on Sunday. Born in Rumania, Gilon, 65, contracted polio as a child and overcame health issues to forge a respected 15-year political career in the Knesset. Gilon was elected to the Knesset in 1999 and highlighted social affairs. During his years of office, he fought for an amendment to the National Insurance Law to improve disability rights and legislation for a minimum wage for waiters. He also helped to strengthen the Disability Equality Act. A member of the Economic, Home and Environment, Child Rights, Labour, Welfare and Health Committees, Gilon also served the Special Committee on Foreign Workers. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described Gilon as one of the hardest working Knesset legislators. “Ilan was an honest man with a big heart and passed away before his time,” he said at his weekly cabinet meeting. “Ilan worked hard, around the clock, to resolve the individual problems of citizens who contacted his office, not just macro-policy but he also saw people on their level. He was diligent and dedicated, a true public servant.” Foreign Minister Yair Lapid noted, “Ilan was one of the best among us. A public

servant, an honest ideologue, a smart and funny man.” Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu commented, “Although we were political adversaries, we had a friendly relationship over the years. I could see his work was done with full faith in the justice of his ways and I respected him for that.” Meretz leader Nitzan Horowitz eulogised Gilon. “Ilan represents a warm Jewish family with children, grandchildren and millions of friends. In the name of the Meretz party, I
send our condolences and a big hug”. Shas leader Arye Deri said, “He was a man with a huge heart who fought for the less fortunate.” Religious Zionism part chairman MK Bezalel Smotrich said Ilan was a “man of truth”. He noted, “Gilon was my opponent on pretty much every subject and at the same time one of the most worthy and beloved people in Israeli politics. He was a man of principles, above all a good and worthy man.” Labour Party leader Merav Michaeli noted, “Ilan would try to make every law better. He was sharp and smart and totally committed. He was full of love for this country, its public and for his friends and family. Just full of love which he spread far and wide.” She added, “Ilan fought ferociously against those who set out to destroy everything he loved about Israel. He was a leader and an effective politician in the best sense of the word.” Blue and White Party’s Hili Trooper said Gilon’s legacy was that humanity comes before politics. President Issac Herzog commented, “I will always remember him as a value driven leader, an honest man who was loyal to his ideas and loved by all.” “He was all heart, a leader of the working man and a true Zionist,” his family said in a statement.

University of Strasbourg linked to Nazi crimes BY LILLY JOSEPH
The University of Strasbourg has released a 500-page report acknowledging links between its medical school and war crimes by Nazi-occupied Alsace. Medical crimes took place at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the Reichsuniversitat, the name of the University of Strasbourg, during the annexation of Alsace by Germany. Research began in 2015 after the discovery of three anatomical plates with human remains of a victim of Nazi doctor August Hirt who gassed 86 Jews at the Struthof-Natzweiler camp to create a skeleton collection during 1941-1944. According to a report by 12 international scientists and researchers there are no other Jewish human remains related to Hirt. The Historical Commission of the Faculty of Medicine has called for a memorial site dedicated to the Jewish victims of Hirt. Dr Philippe Clavert, head of the Institute of Anatomy, reportedly said, “The corpses were not preserved, they were all buried, as has been pointed out.” The report also identified 130 victims of human experimentation in dermatology at the Reichsuniversitat. were euthanised after being transferred to Germany. Lea Münch, from the Institut fur Geschichte und Ethik der Medizin de la Charite discovered the practice in 1944 at the clinic. Some doctors were “Alsatians chosen by the German administration” said Léa Münch. But there were directors who refused to collaborate. They were deported to central France. The Struthof-Natzweiler concentration camp was used to supply three Nazi professors at Strasbourg University with human beings. Dr Eugen Haagen conducted experiments on 196 typhus victims. An exhibition at the European Centre of Deported Resistance Members runs from Friday until March 2023 at the Struthof camp on the theme of the Reichsuniversitat medical faculty.

Car crash leaves 21 children orphaned BY LILLY JOSEPH
BY ADAM MOSES
Israeli Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely hosted a ‘Zikaron Basalon’ event at her residence last Thursday evening to commemorate Yom HaShoah. The Israeli Holocaust initiative connects people to survivor’s testimonies in intimate settings. The event focused on the role of social media as both a positive and hindrance in Holocaust education and memorialisation. As part of the event, Auschwitz survivor Lily Ebert shared her testimony alongside her great-grandson Dov Forman. The pair, who have amassed a significant following on social media, including over 1.9 million followers on Tik Tok, discussed social media to educate the next generation on the horrors of the Holocaust. Ambassador Hotovely said, “We are at a critical moment in history. Young people are the future of effective Holocaust commemoration and we must ensure the lessons of the past are told frequently, through a variety of different mediums, so that the next generation understands where antisemitism can lead.” She added, “In many ways, social media is the new frontline for Holocaust education. Platforms such as Tik Tok and Twitter can be useful for disseminating educational information, but have given rise to Holocaust distortion and denial, as well as becoming a means to generate and spread modern

Attendees shared thoughts on social media’s role in shaping public discourse on the Holocaust.
Three parents have died in a horrific car crash near Ashdod in southern Israel leaving 21 orphaned children on Tuesday. The victims were identified as Tzipi Shimoni, mother of 10 children from Moshav Sde Uziyahu, Fentanesh Obenach, mother of eight from Kiryat Malachi and Matanya Ayoubi, a father of three from Moshav Even Shmuel. Kiryat Malachi Mayor Eliyahu Zohar extended condolences to Obenach’s family following a “horrific” accident. He wrote, “On a day that’s already so sad as Memorial Day, the skies have darkened over the dear family and the eight orphans. Kiryat Malachi embraces the family during these harsh times. May you know no more sorrow.” A preliminary investigation into the
accident reportedly found that a truck driver collided with a vehicle in a traffic jam. Another vehicle was involved in the collision. All victims were passengers of one car. Six others were hospitalised at Assuta Medical Centre in Ashdod and Barzilai Medical Centre in Ashkelon. A man remains in serious condition. Three women and two men are in moderate condition. Earlier Tuesday, a mother of two young children, Ortal Lin Cohen from Ofakima, was involved in a fatal crash near Beer Sheva. Three people were transferred to Soroka Medical Centre in Be’er Sheva including the driver of the vehicle suspected of causing the tragedy. Police found the driver had previous DUI convictions. This year has seen 124 people killed in road accidents in Israel.

Time to speak out OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN
In last weeks column, reference was made to the National Jewish Assembly. This new organisation has declared itself to deal only with issues affecting the Jewish Community and in addition, reflect the views of the silent majority of that community. As with any latest venture, all talk would be about what the organisation is going to do, does it challenge the status quo and crucially is it needed. Yet, perversely, that which has proved most productive have been the articles in the Jewish News and the Jewish Telegraph raising various historical issues about the new organisation’s CEO. It is hard to understand why this should happen, and perhaps not. There is a nasty culture in society generally and in the Jewish Community specifically whereby unless an individual adheres to a left-wing agenda they are characterised as being on the right. If there has been a meeting with someone deemed far-right, then automatically that individual becomes far-right. At that point, they become fair
game for intense criticism and vilification as per last week’s articles. So what is the answer? A free society, accurate reporting, even of historical matters which can be quoted legitimately or out of context as may be the case. For the ordinary person such an attack might be enough to persuade them to back down, resign or in some circumstances for the organisation they represent or work for, let them go. Not everyone has the social media reach of JK Rowling, who has had to bear visceral attacks by some of those who disagree with her on issues concerning gender and sexuality. For those though without that social capital there is often little that can be done, by them. The answer lies with those who claim to be leaders of this community.
For the ordinary person such an attack might be enough to persuade them to back down, resign or in some circumstances for the organisation they represent or work for, let them go.
Being a leader is not just about heading a committee and turning up to events for people to shake your hand and say what a great job you are doing. It is more than having your picture in the paper or your name engraved on some stone or other. It is about taking a stand on issues which affect everyone and the articles from the Jewish Telegraph and the Jewish News are cases in point. So, back to the leaders. The leaders who now need to stand up and declare that articles such as those described here have no place in the Jewish Community, that the community is a place of many ideas and beliefs from across the political and religious spectrum. In the face of the pieces in the two national media outlets it will be interesting to see which of those leaders who claim to hold sway in our community actually have what it takes to justify their status. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

Declarer saw that there was little to be gained by ruffing the heart and cashing the ace and king of trumps; that would have required either a queen-jack doubleton in trumps or the hand with three trumps to hold four or more clubs. (Here that would see West ruff the third club and cash two hearts before taking two diamond tricks.) If instead, declarer played a third round of trumps, the defenders would make three hearts and two diamond tricks. Consequently, declarer decided to lose a trump trick early, keeping a trump in dummy to protect against a heart continuation; after ruffing the king of hearts lead, he played a trump to the ten and West’s jack. As long as trumps were 3-2 he was home. In practice, West hoped that East had the queen of clubs and exited with a heart, which was ruffed in dummy. Declarer then crossed back to his hand with the queen of clubs and cashed the ace and king of trumps. When all followed, he claimed eleven tricks. He had made 4 trumps, 2 Heart ruffs and 5 clubs.

Pupils plant poppies
Hasmo year 12 girls with their gifts for teenage hospital patients
Sacks Morasha Year 3 welcomed AJEX vice president Ron Shelley to share with pupils his experience of being evacuated aged 10 and. There were also stories of grandparents in the War and learning why we plant poppies. A pupil also recited a poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae from Ron’s book of war poems. Youngsters planted poppy seeds, donated by AJEX, and look forward to watching them grow in time for National Armed Forces Week next month (June 19). Ron said, “I told the class that in 1939, when I was a boy, we knew that war was coming because we could see the Barrage Balloons in the air, sandbags around important buildings,
trenches in the parks and of course the gas masks which we were carrying. When war did come in, I became an evacuee. I was away from my parents for nearly six years. This was not something the pupils could comprehend, but a reminder that everyone was affected by the war.” He added, “The children enjoyed an uplifting experience. It was a privilege to listen to their family connections to the war and answer varied questions.” Deputy Headteacher Justin Kett said, “Pupils engaged with the talk and enjoyed learning about remembrance and planting poppies. The planting created a talking point with other classes.”

We recognise that our Royal Patron’s celebration of our work is testament to all parts of this incredible organisation - our wonderful supporters, our brave programme participants, my hardworking team and Trustees and all our partners.”
The 20th Finchley Scout Group having a great time on their weekend away
The 20th Finchley Scout Group held a camp over the bank holiday weekend. The first since the pandemic in person. 60 campers aged 6 to 13 included Beavers, Cubs and Scouts enjoyed a jam-packed weekend at the camp site. Children helped set up tents making a Scout village. Many who slept outside beared cold temperatures with some of the children spotting ice on their tents in the morning. Activities included, archery, aeroball, crate stacking, building a swing, cresta run, fire lighting, making bug houses, shelter building and a group camp fire where youngsters roasted marshmallows. Camp leader Debra Morris said, “A lot of planning went into this weekend. We are grateful for the help of parents, leaders and children for making it a truly wonderful camp. Shabbat was especially special too with a wonderful atmosphere radiating across the camp”.

Jewish Care receive End-of-Life Manchester Grammar School Care Award Charity Football Match
For most people, there is an instinctive aversion to confront ageing and mortality for fear discussing it could somehow hasten illness or death. However, whilst continual medical advances are enabling people to live longer, it may not always be with quality or dignity, but we only have a finite time on this earth. Research consistently shows that most of us avoid discussing planning with family or friends, or execute Wills to govern our affairs or grant Lasting Powers of Attorney to enable people we trust to take crucial decisions should circumstances impair our mental capacity. We postpone and defer, always thinking that there is plenty of time – sadly, that is not always the case. Dementia is the loss of cognitive function which, as it progresses, can change a person’s life and capabilities, and impact upon their emotions and relationships. Dementia diagnoses have been increasing. This cruel disease is epitomised by a pervasive uncertainty resulting from an unknown future that continually challenges the person with dementia and important people in their life, often over an extended period. End-of-life planning is not, and should not be, solely about death itself and the decisions governing a person’s final days. Instead, it should be about an approach that seeks to understand all aspects of a person’s wellbeing, care, and what matters most to them throughout their lifetime, no matter what age or stage of life. In the context of a dementia diagnosis, this is fundamental. Assumptions about people’s intentions and priorities, against the backdrop of cognitive progressive decline, are often done under pressure, when the carer and family are under much emotional distress, and therefore adversely impact an individual and their quality of life. Unfortunately, the absence of end-of-life planning has forced too many people to confront

painful issues during illness or grief when they feel most emotionally exposed thereby compounding their fears, concerns, and pressures upon them. Their challenge is to support people in navigating the plethora of information and advice, ensure they communicate with healthcare professionals involved to achieve a cohesive care planning that empowers people and those with dementia and their families to approach their later years with clarity, compassion, and confidence. This challenge is at the core of Jewish Care’s ethos and values. Jewish Care is placing itself at the forefront of raising awareness and changing mindsets with the aspiration that, as a society, they can provide the community we support with the best care and support.

The event was extra special as the shul has promoted the Yad Vashem Bar-Batmitzvah twinning project. Children twin with a child murdered in the Holocaust before celebrating their milestone in Jewish life. Thirty children at the shul wanted to take part in a candle lighting ceremony and duly lit a candle in memory of their twin. Every child said the name of their twin to keep
their memory alive. The evening was orchestrated and run by Mizrachi UK narrated by Rabbi Andrew Shaw with Chazan Jonny Turgel capturing the essence of the event. ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com ELON MUSK AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH
Dear Rabbi I wonder what you think about Elon Musk taking over Twitter. As a Jew, the idea of him opening up “freedom of speech” frightens me. It will enable Antisemitism to fester and that will spill over into the real world. When the likes of Donald Trump will be welcomed back, we know we have a problem. Estelle Dear Estelle When Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini is allowed on Twitter, as is the head of the Taliban, the President of Russia and numerous supremacists, but not Donald Trump, then we know we have a problem. Ultimately it smacks more of woke liberals and their programmed bots dictating the agenda based on their political affiliations. For the record, I don’t believe that permanent bans should ever happen. Better policing, yes. Suspensions yes. But never permanent bans unless there is actual illegal activity. And therein lays the point: Freedom of speech has to be offset against responsible speech. There is an inherent paradox between the legality of ‘freedom of speech’ and the illegality of ‘incitement toward hatred.’ Freedom of speech should never be unbridled. There has to be an element of restraint. Otherwise we can have one freedom or the other but not both. The onus is on those at the helm to strike the right balance. More than anything, a transparent system, both in policy and operations, is the right way to earn trust from the public.
Whether Twitter is owned by a company or an open protocol, it doesn’t matter as much as deliberately deciding to be open about every decision and why it was made. It’s not easy to do, but it must happen.
TALKING ABOUT ME IN SYNAGOGUE
Dear Rabbi I am an avid reader and I can tell you, sometimes your column is the topic of conversation in our shul on Shabbat morning. That is, until one member went over to me last week and said, “I think Rabbi Schochet would be appalled if he knew you were discussing and debating his column in Shul rather than remaining quiet and praying instead. I replied rather cynically, “I’ll write in and ask him.” So here you are. Jerry Dear Jerry I’m flattered – really. I’m also reminded of the time a member of mine, a regular attendee, approached me after shul on Rosh Hashanah expressing his upset about the three men in front of him: “Imagine, they turn up to Shul a couple of times a year and all they talked about throughout prayers is their golf!” I looked to him: “Surely that’s better than had they been on the golf course today, talking about Shul!” I have always maintained that as long as people connect, they identify in some way, whichever way with the community and that works for me! Jews identify for a myriad of reasons. In the past it was about religion. You identified as a Jew by virtue of your submission to the dictates
Pirkei Avot
and mandates of the faith. In later years it became more about culture, the geflte fish on Friday night and the matzah balls on Seder night. For others it was limited to the liberal and fine arts, and in the post Holocaust era for many, Jewish identity became exclusively about Zionism and the State of Israel. Today, as the Western world becomes more and more focused on finding the perfect niche for every person, and personalising everything from laptops to lattes, many Jews are customising their investment in Judaism, coming up with communities for everything from Jewish vegans, to Jewish pacifists and organisations such as “Kvetchy Kids” to “Jewish Parents in search of Nachas.” Much like the three Jewish mothers sitting in a restaurant in Golders Green. The first one says: “My son gives me so much nachas. Last winter he gave me an all-expenses paid holiday to the Bahamas. It was a mechayeh. The second mother chimed in: “My son gives me nachas. He arranged for me a new car with a Chauffer at my disposal, to take me wherever I have to go.” The third one pipes up: “You yentes think that’s nachas? My son goes to a psychiatrist once a week at two hundred pounds each time and all he talks about is me!” We have all been influenced by our own narrative, our own experiences, outlooks and lifestyle. The bottom line is: Every Jew is valued; every Jew counts. Whether you come indoors or you remain always outdoors; whether you’re going to pray or you’re a
Rabbenu never took any credit himself, he always honoured the Torah and Hashem instead. When he was asked by G-d on Har Sinai by the burning bush to lead the Jews out of Egypt he famously spent a week pleading with G-d to find someone else, namely his brother. In Parashat Vayikrah, we find the small Aleph where Moses was too humble
to tell the world that Hashem spoke to him properly in all His glory, rather he wanted people to think that Hashem merely happened upon him and suddenly appeared to him, as signified by the word ‘Vayikar.’ He famously told Hashem to wipe his name out entirely in the Torah and had no problem writing

Weekly Dvar Torah F R O M E R E TZ Y I S R A E L
And Counting BY RABBANIT SALLY MAYER
In Parashat Kedoshim, we read of the mitzvah of orlah: when we plant a fruit tree, we may not eat its fruits for the first three years. In the fourth year, the fruits are kodesh hilulim laHashem, and they must be eaten in Jerusalem in the time of the Holy Temple, with halachot similar to those governing the fruits of ma’aser sheini (second tithe) – one may redeem their holiness onto coins and, in the time of the Mikdash, bring the coins to Jerusalem to purchase food. What is the reason for this mitzvah? Why must we leave three years’ worth of fruit untouched, bring the fourth year’s fruits to Yerushalayim, and only in the fifth year use the fruits as we wish? The Ramban suggests that this mitzvah is similar to that of bikkurim: we must bring the first fruits of each tree up to Hashem, to His holy city, just like we bring the first fruits of the seven species of Eretz Yisrael
up to Yerushalayim, beginning on Shavuot. The Ramban explains that since the first three years’ fruits are not very beautiful, we wait for the fourth year, when the fruits are worthy to present to Hashem. What results is a cycle of three years of waiting, of preparation, of tending to the tree and helping it to grow (except, of course, during Shemitta), followed by a fourth year which is special and holy. This structure is similar to that of Shemitta, in which we work the land for six years, followed by a year which is special and holy, and its fruits have a special status as well. It also reminds us of the time of sefirat ha-omer, where we find ourselves now: we count 49 days, until we reach the 50th
day, Shavuot, which is set aside for Hashem. What is the nature of these days or years of waiting? Orlah is a time of preparation – it is premature to eat the fruits, or even to bring them to Hashem, but we must create the circumstances in which the fruits will flourish, so that we can offer them to Hashem when they are ready. Similarly, we can take the opportunity of the time period of sefirat ha-omer to prepare to accept the Torah, by redoubling our efforts to learn Torah and to observe mitzvot. Sefirat ha-omer can be a time of introspection, of preparing to receive the Torah anew with greater understanding and commitment. Many people take on a project to learn something

new during this time, such as Pirkei Avot, traditionally studied a chapter a week in between Pesach and Shavuot, to remind ourselves of the character traits that are the basis of a Jew’s personality. In fact, the Torah speaks of orlah in another sense as well: u’maltem et orlat levavchem (Devarim 10) – Hashem commands us to remove the orlah (the same term used for the foreskin removed at a brit milah) from our hearts, that which prevents us from listening to the Torah and keeping the mitzvot. If we use the time of the omer to remove this barrier from our hearts, then we will be ready, B’ezrat Hashem, to bring the fruits of our labor to Hashem on Shavuot, ready to accept His Torah again. Rabbanit Sally Mayer serves as Rosh Midrasha at Ohr Torah Stone’s Midreshet Lindenbaum in Jerusalem. She is a member of the Mizrachi Speakers Bureau (www.mizrachi.org/speakers).

Sidra Summary Point to Consider: Why is revering parents juxtaposed to keeping Shabbat? (see Rashi to 19:3)
2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 19:15-22
A judge is not allowed to favour any litigant. It is forbidden to harbour hatred or to seek revenge. You shall “love your fellow as yourself”. One is not allowed to plant a field with mixed seeds, nor wear clothes with a mixture of wool and linen.

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – 19:1-14
Kedoshim contains many mitzvot, a selection of which has been included here. We are commanded to revere our parents and to observe Shabbat. It is prohibited to worship and make idols. Temple offerings need to be eaten within their designated time. When harvesting one’s field or vineyard, certain produce needs to be left over for paupers to take free of charge. Stealing, making false oaths and lying are all prohibited. Hired workers must be paid on time. One may not place a stumbling block in front of a blind person.
Eating the fruit of a tree during the first three years of its growth is forbidden. In the tree’s fourth year, the fruit has to be eaten in Jerusalem. It is forbidden to cut one’s skin in mourning. There is a mitzvah to stand up in the presence of a Torah scholar and an elderly person.
4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 19:33-37
One must treat converts to Judaism with love and sensitivity. It is imperative to have accurate scales, weights and measures.
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 20:1-7
There was a severe prohibition against giving one’s children over to an ancient cult called ‘Molech’. It was also forbidden to turn to sorcerers, two types of which
are mentioned specifically by name – ov and yideoni.
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 20:8-22
Cursing one’s parents is forbidden. The punishments for the forbidden relationships detailed in the 6th aliyah (Shishi) of Acharei Mot are listed.
7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 20:23-27

Yom Ha’atzmaut: Jewish History Under Construction BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN
Redemption comes in many varieties. Sometimes it is a rapid swell and sometimes a gentle flow. Sometimes history is overhauled in a heartbeat and other times its revolutions are gradual. Though redemption is often compared to a sunrise, in Psalms chapter 18, King David compares it to the construction of a fortress, reminding us that, often, it is a drawn-out project. So far, we have witnessed three phases of this “project”:
CHAPTER 1 “DIVINE RESTORATION”
In 1948 we experienced the first wave of modern redemption. It is difficult to determine why we merited divine intervention or whether that generation was “deserving” of redemption. However, one fact is unmistakable: the Holocaust was the darkest moment of Jewish history since the destruction of the second Temple. For two thousand years, we faced seemingly endless discrimination, hatred, pogroms and expulsions, but nothing compared to the systematic attempt to rid the entire world of Jews. Our previous enemies aimed to cleanse their own countries of Jews, but Hitler conceived of global genocide- to the point that he maintained a list of 200 Albanian Jews in his personal bunker. In the nightmarish world of the Holocaust, it was difficult to discern the presence of G-d. 1945 marked the darkest period of human history in two thousand years. That desecration of Hashem’s presence demanded a proportionate response – an event which would restore His presence to His world. The return of His people to their ancient homeland, though in no way “compensating for”, or justifying the Holocaust, restored Hashem’s presence in human history. The first wave of our redemption reintroduced Hashem to the world stage. Beyond the restoration of G-d’s presence, 1948 also solved the Jewish refugee crisis. Homeless Jews had been ported across the globe, repeatedly being denied entry into host countries. By 1948, we finally had a safe-haven of return, even if the majority of our people didn’t return home. Bizarrely, even geopolitical dynamics contributed to the foundation of our state. The state of Israel was confirmed by a UN vote driven by a two thirds majority. A two thirds majority was unimaginable during a Cold War era characterized by antagonism and animosity between the West and the Communist-dominated Eastern bloc. Who could imagine both blocs voting in unison to approve the state of Israel? Yet, miraculously diplomatic realities were realigned, as our path “home” was blazed by the
hidden hand of Hashem operating within history.
CHAPTER 2 - THE RETURN TO “HISTORY”
Nineteen years after our initial return, we experienced the second wave of redemption. In 1948 when Jews returned to Haifa and Tel Aviv the world didn’t shudder. Our return in 1948 “solved” the practical refugee crisis and soothed the world’s guilty post-Holocaust conscience. When Jews returned to Jerusalem and to the hinterlands of Judea and Samaria, the world took notice. 1967 announced that we had been restored to the historical stage, and that history was beginning to hurdle forward. Some nations celebrate our return while others are violently opposed. Either way, Jewish presence in Jerusalem isn’t a “neutral” event. When G-d’s chosen people return to the city in which humanity originated and in which, history will conclude - the entire world “notices”. However, it wasn’t just the international community which took notice. Between 1948 and 1967, limited waves of Jews voyaged to the fledgling state. The Six-Day war and our return both to Jerusalem and to the surrounding “Biblical corridor”, stoked the Jewish imagination. Both Aliyah and large-scale Jewish tourism to Israel became popular after 1967. Just as importantly, millions of Russian Jews, whose religious identity had been emasculated by the Communist regime, rediscovered their Jewish heritage and turned their rejuvenated hearts toward their homeland. In 1967, the second wave of redemption heralded the return of our people to history and beckoned worldwide Jewry back to their homeland.
CHAPTER 3- THE PAST 30 YEARS
About thirty years ago, the third wave of redemption began. Despite the supernatural interventions of 1948 and the historical revitalization of 1967, the state remained small and vulnerable - more pitied than respected. Over the past thirty years, Israel has emerged as a military superpower, developing both a powerful economy, and robust democracy. These formidable achievements are even more impressive given the endless hostility we face. Despite our perpetually perilous security situation, we have fashioned an emergent economy, a stable democracy and a society which preserves the dignity of life and the sanctity of human liberty. The vision of the people of G-d demonstrating the values of a G-d-like lifestyle, is beginning to materialize. All these achievements have caught the interest of the international community which is beginning to take great interest in the affairs of this tiny, previously
1948 also solved the Jewish refugee crisis. Homeless Jews had been ported across the globe, repeatedly being denied entry into host countries. By 1948, we finally had a safe-haven of return, even if the majority of our people didn’t return home. insignificant country. We are starting to attract attention, and for good reason. Intrigued by our people and our unique history, other countries are quickly discovering the deep-rooted mission of Judaism which has, once again, blossomed in Israel. There are two “underrated” emergent sectors in israel which will deeply impact the future. Having discovered off-shore gas reserves, and exploring the prospects of an underwater pipeline to Europe, we are poised to become a major worldwide supplier of energy. The carnage in the Ukraine is tragic, but in the aftermath of the war, Israel will likely be positioned to provide energy to a European continent weaning itself off of Russian energy dependence. This may lend literal meaning to our long-standing role as ‘ohr la’goyim’- a light for nations. We will literally provide light, heat and energy to the modern world.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Additionally, Israel is currently spearheading a dramatic revolution in medical technology and in cutting-edge medical procedures. This revolution will radically alter worldwide medical treatment in the coming decades. Fueling human progress and curing human illness is an integral component of our calling as Jews. The third wave of redemption has seen our state rise to prominence and discover the technologies to advance human prosperity. The book of redemption is still being written. Who knows what future chapters hold? The writer is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

Parshat Kedoshim:
What is Holiness? BY GAVRIEL COHN
What does the term kedusha mean? What is holiness? In what way is G-d holy, and how are we meant to copy it? Many of the concepts and mitzvot of Sefer Vayikra seem obscure, their meaning beyond our grasp. Let’s delve into the opening commandment of our sedra, that we should “be holy because G-d is holy.” Perhaps we can gain some clarity. Reb Shimon Shkop, a famed Lithuanian Talmud scholar, discusses this commandment in the preface to his book. He proposes that holiness means to give of oneself to others, exactly like G-d does. What we know of G-d is that He created and sustains the world, His actions are entirely focused on an entity outside of Himself. So holiness (literally, being separated or elevated beyond one’s own’s self), means to dedicate oneself to others. Like G-d’s act of sustaining the Universe, we too are instructed to be holy, projecting ourselves outwardly and giving to others. Reb Shimon goes on to explain that we can only do this by feeling a sense of unity
Kedoshim RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE
THE EXTRA PHRASE
The Torah constantly tells us who is speaking (generally G-d) and who is being addressed (often Moses, often the people of Israel). We expect something similar at the beginning of this week’s reading, but lo and behold, the Torah identifies the audience not as Israel but as “all the congregation of the Children of Israel” (Lev. 19:2). What does the text have in mind when it is so specific that it mentions the whole congregation? It must have a connection with the message, which is “You shall be holy people”. The extra phrase is there to tell us that every Israelite has two distinguishing marks at the same time – ethnic (everyone is part of the people of Israel) and spiritual (everyone – however secular they seem – is spiritually significant). Rav Soloveitchik said that there were two covenants in Jewishness, the covenant of fate (ethnic) and the covenant of faith (spiritual). Sometimes a Jew emphasises one aspect, sometimes the other, but the best way to be is a synthesis.
with the world. “A person should expand the natural love they have for themselves and feel that all of creation is included within his sense of self; one should see himself as a small limb in this great body of the Universe” and so naturally give to the wider world to which he is part of – being holy through uniting with others. Indeed, in commanding the Jewish People to be holy, Moshe gathered “the entire congregation of Israel” and addressed them as a collective, united as one. “Only in unity,” seeing oneself as part of a wider whole, can one truly love and give to those around oneself, thereby achieving holiness (Sefat Emet). This idea of holiness, of giving to others, being achieved only through uniting with creation, perhaps is the foundation of our
entire sedra, and sheds light on the long litany of mitzvot that it contains. There are a strange links between all the mitzvot of our parsha. Unlike the sharp distinction made within the Ten Commandments, here all the dozens of mitzvot, those between man and G-d and those between man and man, are interwoven and almost blur together. In these passages, it is almost as if the natural world and human society become blended together, ourselves, society, and relationship towards the natural world fuses into a unity: “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not fully reap the corner of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest… You shall not round off the corner of your head, and you shall
There are a strange links between all the mitzvot of our parsha. Unlike the sharp distinction made within the Ten Commandments, here all the dozens of mitzvot, those between man and G-d and those between man and man, are interwoven and almost blur together.
Rav Soloveitchik said that there were two covenants in Jewishness, the covenant of fate (ethnic) and the covenant of faith (spiritual). VENGEANCE
What is the difference between being vengeful and bearing a grudge? The Torah mentions them together: “You shall not take vengeance nor bear a grudge” (Lev. 19:18). David Hoffmann says vengeance is immediate revenge and bearing a grudge is maintaining the rage. The Sifra gives examples: 1. A. says to B, “Lend me your sickle,” and B. refuses. The next day, B. says, “Lend me your adze,” and A. replies, “I shall not lend it to you just as you did not lend me your sickle.” This is vengeance. 2. B. says to A., “Lend me your adze,” and A. refuses. The next day, A. says, “Lend me your sickle,” and B. replies, “Here you are; I am not like you who did not lend your adze.” This is what ls meant by bearing a grudge. But the examples are not exactly parallel, i.e. why is the one who takes
vengeance concerned with a sickle and the one who bears a grudge, an adze? Wolf Heidenheim notes that a sickle is more delicate than an adze; A. is motivated by vengeance when he will not lend his adze, since the wear and tear on an adze is less than that on the sickle. Maybe B. refused to lend his sickle precisely because of the heavy wear and tear on it. Vengeance, says Heidenheim, implies returning evil in greater measure. In the case of a grudge the situation is reversed. Lending a delicate sickle is a generous thing to do, but spoilt by the words, “I am not like you”. There should be no sense of grievance.
TELL HIM OFF – BUT NOT ALWAYS
If someone is doing the wrong thing, you have to rebuke him (Lev.19:17). It is like the duty you have to save a person from danger. If you can see that they are stepping into obvious risk, you cannot stand idly by.

not destroy the edge of your beard… You shall not steal, you shall not deny falsely or lie to one’s his friend; you shall not swear falsely by My Name, profaning the Name of your G-d… You shall not stand by your fellow’s blood… You shall not eat before a sacrifice’s blood has been sprinkled…” These Chukkim and Mishpatim, laws geared towards enabling us to respect both nature and human society (the Ramban; R’ Hirsch), all mixed into one. In this list, the corners of our human faces mirror the ends of the earthy fields of the land (pe’ah) and our bodies the fruits of the trees (brit milah and orlah). We are commanded to watch our speech both regarding G-d and regarding our fellow man, and to treat the blood of sacrifices and animals with care, as well as the lives of people. Perhaps these laws enable us to unite us to Creation, to become close to others and to nature. That sense of unity, of being “a part of a wider whole,” can then help us give to those around us, being holy just like G-d. Gav works as an Account Executive in Public Relations. The same applies to a person who is breaking a law of the Torah: if you refrain from speaking out, you have a share in the responsibility for the risk they are taking with their eternal life. It is not only their wellbeing which you are protecting, but your own. If you ignore actual or possible evil around you, you show yourself as a hard-hearted, irresponsible citizen. What about a situation in which no-one is going to take any notice of your warning or rebuke? For the sake of your own conscience you cannot remain unmoved, but you might make a laughing stock of yourself. Hence the sages say, “Just as it is a duty to say that which will be heeded, so it is a duty not to say that which will not be heeded” (Talmud Yevamot 65b).

Buckle up, we’ve got 51 mitzvot to cover this week if you wanna holy. Wanna be BFFs with Hashem? Well, here goes; respect your parents. Don’t do idols.Leave parts of your field for the poor. Leave anything you dropped or forgot in your field for the poor. Be honest, don’t lie, make false promises or do mean sneaky or unfair things. Don’t steal. Pay on time. Don’t trick people. If you’re a judge, be fair. Don’t say not nice things about others. Don’t stand by when you can help. Don’t hate anyone. Love all Jews, don’t do revenge or bear grudge (holding on only hurts you). Don’t believe in superstitions, Hashem is in total control and He loves you more than you love yourself – and that’s a lot. No magic, no tatoos but keep the peyois. Don’t do shatnez, mix seeds when planting and keep honest weights.

adassa sat in her picnic chair and stretched her feet into the sand, feeling its warmth run through her toes. This is the life she thought happily. It was so relaxing to have a lovely book to read, a beautiful view of the sea and the warm sun on her face. Mishpachat Greengold had gone to stay in Folkstone for the bank holiday. Abba and Chaim had gone off cycling for the day, while Ima, Hadassa, Rivki, Yehudis and Shloime were enjoying the warm sunshine on the sandy beach. “Mine!” Yehudis snatched the blue plastic trowel from baby Shloime. Shloime looked a bit sad, but then crawled over to Rivki who was building a large sandcastle with a bucket and spade. “You can help me dig the moat,” said Rivki kindly to Shloime, handing him a small red spade. Ima was relaxing in a second picnic chair, reading her favourite Jewish book. “It’s so nice to have a break,” Ima said with a sigh. “Why can’t we do this all the time?” Hadassa asked Ima. “That would be lovely, wouldn’t it, but it would definitely get boring after a while.” Hadassa nodded, “I guess so.” “Lunch time!” Ima called out, unpacking the freezer bag she had brought with. “There are smoked salmon pita bread sandwiches with avocado and string cheese.” “Yum!” said Rivki happily. “Then we have fromage frais for dessert with
fully checked strawberries” “Wow!” said Hadassa. “This is the best lunch ever!” After they had eaten all the delicious food and bentsched, Rivki and Hadassa decided to go paddling in the shallows. “Let’s take the camera in case we see anything interesting,” said Hadassa. They both ran over to a rocky-looking area where the water was very low. “Look!” yelled Rivki, pointing to a large rock. “There’s a massive crab!” “There are so many beautiful shells here,” Hadassa replied excitedly. “I think I can even see some animals inside them!” They made their way over pebbles and

seaweed, looking for any more interesting creatures. “There’s a starfish!” called Rivki to Hadassa. “Wow, let’s take a picture of it with the camera and then go back to show Ima.” Smiling happily they ran back to Ima to show her all the pictures that they had taken. “Well done,” said Ima. “These pictures are great.” “Can we have a snack now please?” Hadassa asked. Ima checked inside her bag and brought out four delicious chocolate bars. “Wow, this is the best day ever!” exclaimed Rivki. “Thanks, Ima,” said Hadassa. They all sat munching happily on their bars.

“I want more,” said Rivki, looking sadly at her empty chocolate wrapper. “I wish we could have lots of chocolate all the time,” replied Hadassa. “Why do you want more?” asked Ima. “Because it’s yummy!” Rivki and Hadassa said together. Ima smiled. “You know, it’s really lovely we have all these nice treats. To be able to go on holiday, sit on the beach and have tasty food, but do you think that is our goal in life?” “No,” said Hadassa thoughtfully. “Our goal is to serve Hashem and do His mitzvos.” “Very good! So why do we spend our time and money on these nice things?” Ima paused, but neither Rivki or Hadassa seemed to know the answer. “We do it in order to give us the strength to do more mitzvos!” Ima continued, “Hashem gave us a physical body, which we need to look after in order to continue to do Mitzvos. Sometimes our bodies need a relaxing day and some nice food, but we only do it in order to give us the ability to do what Hashem wants. In this week’s sedra, we talk about what it means to be holy. One explanation is that you can eat lots and lots of nice food without doing any actual aveiros, however that is not a holy way to behave. Instead, we should eat nice foods only enough to help us do more mitzvos.” “Thanks Ima,” said Rivki and Hadassa hugging Ima. “Let’s appreciate it while it lasts then,” smiled Hadassa, as she and Rivki ran off to do some more paddling before it was time to go home.

COOKERY 31
Cholent from Alsace
Another delicious recipe from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com
You never have too many recipes for Cholent. This recipe is sweetened by the addition of the dried fruits of which I have added a selection of peaches, apricots and pears – however you could substitute figs, prunes and dates if they are your preference. Cholent recipes vary from one country to another and between regions ~this is a delicious French/ German cholent made with lamb and rosemary. The beauty of all cholent is that is a complete hot meal all in one pot. I have kept the skins on the potatoes as this helps to prevent them falling apart. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 18 – 20 hours
Serves: 8
Ingredients 200g tinned haricot beans - rinsed 1.8kg shoulder of lamb –cubed 4 garlic cloves – sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 onions – peeled and sliced 570ml red wine 900g potatoes – quartered 4 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves 1 tablespoon sugar 50g raisins 200g mixed dried fruit – apricots, pears or peaches 570ml vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper Garnish: Sprigs of rosemary Method 1) Heat the oil in a large casserole dish on the hob. Add the onions, garlic, and lamb and sauté over a high heat for 5 – 10 minutes or until the meat is brown.
2) Add the wine, potatoes, rosemary, beans, sugar, raisins and dried fruit and pour enough stock to cover all the ingredients. 3) Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil and simmer for 1 ½ hours. If preferred simmer the cholent ahead of time, cook to this stage and chill until just before Shabbats starts. 4) Pre-heat the oven to its lowest temperature. Cover the casserole dish with foil and then a lid; this helps to keep the heat in and prevents the flavours escaping. Place the dish in the oven and leave to ‘cook’ overnight. Serve the cholent when you return from the shul! With fresh sprigs of fresh rosemary.
ShabbatUK BY DENISE PHILLIPS
Next week 13-14 May is ShabbatUK. This was inspired by the International Shabbat Project and then tailored specifically for the UK Jewish community. Its aim is to encourage Shabbat observance through empowering local communities to unify British Jewry on ShabbatUK. Its mission is three-fold - encourage and increase Shabbat engagement and observance, unifying as many British Jews as possible and to empower communities to stage remarkable events at this time. Cholent, the Shabbat friendly dish is probably one of the most well-known of all Jewish traditional dishes. It is a one pot dish hot meal consisting of various meats, grains and vegetables all cooked together in a very slow oven. Leave in the oven over night and enjoy on your return from shul. The aroma is quite distinctive and will certainly waft its way throughout the house if the kitchen door is left open. If you have never made it… do it for ShabbatUK. In the shtetlach of Eastern Europe, pots of cholent were cooked in communal baker’s ovens, which were large enough to generate and retain an incredible amount of heat. The families would go after synagogue to collect their pots of cholent and partake of their Sabbath meal. The etymology of cholent translates to hot ‘chaud’ and slow ‘lent’
There are numerous recipes for cholent, but they all contain the following essential, common features, two or more kinds of meat, potatoes, or vegetables or both, grains, liquid of some kind to provide moisture and seasoning. It can even be made vegan or vegetarian! (see www.jewishcookery.com for my vegetarian cholent recipe) • The secret ingredient to my recipe for Cholent is golden syrup, this tends to just soften and sweeten the ingredients in an unassuming way! • Other useful tips include adding plenty water at least double the amount above the line of the stew otherwise it will burn and go dry. • Choose meat that is cut into large pieces and do well with long slow cooking like shin beef, chuck steak, brisket and lamb shoulder. • Vegetables like potatoes and carrots are best cut into large pieces otherwise they just fall apart • Beans, lentils and pulses add extra bulk to the pot - they also absorb liquid so take this into consideration when adding liquid • Flavour well spices like paprika, celery salt, chilli powder, ginger, cumin. Making cholent is a great experience, there is no ‘RIGHT’ recipe so experiment with your favourite ingredients and spices. Shabbat Shalom and best dishes! Denise

How can business phone calls be made and received through an app, rather than through a physical phone? Firstly, It’s important to know that ALL UK landlines are due to be switched off by the year 2025. Yes, including residential houses, not just businesses. The replacement for landlines is what’s known as VoIP, which stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. However, forward-thinking businesses now adopt Unified Communications as their preferred method of interacting with clients, as well as communicating between team members. The benefits of the Unified Communications system that we provide are so much more than just making & receiving phone calls. Because it’s cloud-based, you can use it from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a clear internet connection. We also provide calls to UK landlines & mobiles, as well as to many international destinations, free of charge. Whether that’s through the app on your mobile phone, or on your computer with a headset (no headset required if you’re working remotely from a laptop). You can even use it through your web browser! You can of course use a physical handset too, though I recommend using headsets whenever possible so that you have 2 hands to work with, and no neck ache! Other features, such as call recording (including through the app), are included as standard too. Whilst standard systems allow you to have calls directed to the correct team members, you can similarly enable your website visitors to contact you via the live webchat which feeds straight into your Unified Communications messaging feature, and is directed to any team members you choose should respond at any given time. You can check it out at the bottom right-hand side of our website smartinet.co.uk And whilst you’re at it, you can enquire about the multitude of additional features available, to enhance your communication!.

Motoring: FORD KUGA Our travel writer Malcolm Ginsberg has added motoring to his portfolio over the last 21 months. He is a member of The Guild of Motoring Writers and many years ago was Lotus Public Relations Manager. Here he tries out the Ford Kuga. Once upon a time Ford dominated the British domestic car market with major production units at Dagenham and Hailwood. Those times are long gone. Ford retreated to mainland Europe for its righthand drive cars. Maybe the product was wrong “Mondeo Man” a relic from the past. Motoring journalists were abandoned with even members of the Guild banned from road testing cars once they reached 70 mph. Thankfully things have changed and with a fine range, and real quality, today’s Ford cars can match anything that is emerging from the Far East and Europe. One could say they have been electrified. And ‘senior’ writers, such as Jewish Weekly’s Malcolm Ginsberg can review the products with a road test. The Kuga Plug-In Hybrid was the best-selling PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) of any brand across all European markets in 2021 and outsold its nearest segment rival by more than 17%. Sales of plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles accounted for 19% of all new vehicles traded in 2021, compared to 21.7% for diesel-engine vehicles, and more than half of all Kuga’s sold in 2021 were plug-in hybrid or full hybrid. Ford says that Kuga drivers potentially each saved in one year the equivalent CO2 emissions of a return trip from London to Buenos Aires. “Not every customer is in a position to jump straight from petrol or diesel to a fully electric vehicle. That’s why we designed our Kuga Plug-In Hybrid to offer the best of both worlds, and selling more than any other PHEV in Europe suggests we have the recipe just right,”, said Glen Goold, Ford Kuga Vehicle Line Director. “Ford is committed to an electrified future, and cars like the Kuga Plug-In Hybrid are helping customers take that step with us”. The art of driving is changing too. When your reviewer first took to the wheel he was told not the use the brakes coming down hills for instance, the then drum devices expensive to replace, and with inadequate tyres skidding a real possibility. Use the gearbox one was told. Not so today. Two pedal foot controls, wonderful disc brakes and superb tyres mean that self-charging cars are energised by using one’s feet on a descent (and I drive two-footed). My regular grumble with a week’s loan is that the time is too short to learn one’s way around any modern car. If you are actually purchasing one your salesman will

(normally) ensure a proper handover and briefing with the product. These days it is no longer just a finger pointed to where the key goes in, and “it’s over there” for the reverse. On the Kuga I counted 20 (at least) control functions, from a driver’s impairment monitor (whatever that is), to the bleeper (excellent) for lane keeping. But I had to find out for myself. First impressions count. Entry is keyless, the power start button easy to find, and the ‘twist’ central control rotary dial very slick with various settings. From the outside the car does look very smart with 19inch machined finished alloy wheels, red brake callipers and stylised black roof rails covering the power operated sunshine roof. The front when drive SUV sits up higher than normal saloons without appearing to tower over its contemporaries. With a 0-60 of 9.2 seconds the test Kuga, a 2.5 Duratec model was never going to win a traffic light grand prix, but at 70mph on the motorway in cruise control mode it is effortless motoring at over 50mpg, a real plus in these expensive petrol days.
When it comes to progress on our increasingly poor road infrastructure the damping is excellent and after a while it becomes easy to judge just what speed one can progress over the bumps without upsetting

the well snuggled passengers including up to three very comfortable in the back. As for handling, whilst not a sports car, I judge it to have plenty agility and poise, perhaps even entertaining. The Kuga comes with a whole host of what used to be ad-ons. These include front and rear heated seats and heated steering wheel. Privacy glass as well and heated and powered folding mirrors with puddle lights. There is a hands-free power tailgate, the button quite high for those of a short stature. The flexible rear seating slides forward or backward to suit your needs, increasing the rear storage capacity by 67 litres when folded so you’ll have no trouble packing anything in. With front and rear cameras the parking sensors are a bonus, and no excuse for bumps at either end! With the test car the Chrome Blue paintwork (£600) was an extra, likewise the very useful charging pad for a suitably equipped mobile phone (£150). What is termed the ‘Driver’s Assistance Pack’ is also charged (£1,100) including a front camera, Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), the already mentioned driver’s impairment monitor, Active Park Assist (great fun once you understand how it works). The ‘Technology Pack’ (£550) has LED glare-free headlights and my one real criticism of the car, a poor ‘Head Up Display’ shown very low in front of the driver. Stay with the excellent sat nav. Ford have decided to do away with the traditional information handbook and rely on an App. A big mistake when you are trying to find the fuel release button. Please supply Mr Ford? The on-the-road price is £38,000 but the extras make the final total as tested £40,500. See your local dealer for a discount, or take it on a lease. There are plenty of Kuga variants starting from £23,000. www.ford.co.uk/cars/new-kuga

Klopp joy – Pep heartbreak Sixteen-goal Lions in Champions League semis
Harry Kane hit the target to keep Spurs in the hunt. Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho scored a consolation goal. Brendon Rogers’ side tackle Jose Mourinho’s Roma tonight in the Europa Conference league semi-final. The tie is poised at 1-1. Arsenal and Tottenham are all but guaranteed Europa League football next season with David Moyes’ West Ham well adrift in seventh place. But both clubs though will want to cement a place in the elite competition. Manchester United have endured a torrid league campaign but enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over Brentford at Old Trafford in the Monday night fixture. Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo, with a penalty, and Raphael Varane scored to keep the team mathematically in the race for the Champions League but Europa League football seems more likely. The relegation battle is a three-way battle between Burnley, Leeds and Everton. In-form Burnley picked up a third consecutive win to move five points clear of the relegation zone. The Clarets have enjoyed a superb spell under interim boss Mike Jackson since sacking manager Sean Dyche. Their latest victory saw Burnley strike twice late on to all but send Watford down to the Championship. Only a mathematical miracle can save The Hornets from relegation as they are 12 points behind Burnley and Leeds with four games remaining. After conceding a James Tarkowski own goal, Jack Cork and Josh Brownhill hit the target for a famous win at Vicarage Road. Richarlison scored the only goal of the game but Everton fans had keeper Jordan Pickford to thank for two outstanding saves. Gabriel Jesus and Fernadinho completed the scoring to sustain City’s advantage over Liverpool. Guardiola told BBC MOTD: “All the players were fantastic with the difficulty we suffered. They had some transitions in the last 25 minutes, but we played a really good game.” He added, “We have been many times in this position. It’s not about the pressure, it’s simple. We have to win all our games to be champions. If we don’t, Liverpool will be champions.” Liverpool picked up a hard-fought win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park courtesy of a Naby Keita 19th minute strike. Resting a number of players was seen as a risk by Klopp but the Reds were up to the challenge in an impressive display. Klopp told BT Sport : “It’s the most difficult of
circumstances. A team in form, a crowd waiting for ages for proper success. Coming here with five changes and building pretty much a new setup is really difficult, so the performance was absolutely outstanding. I loved it. We controlled the game in so many ways.” With third placed Chelsea surprisingly losing at relegation threatened Everton, Arsenal moved three points behind the Blues in the Champions League chase with a 2-1 win against West Ham at London Stadium. Rob Holding opened the scoring, Jarrod Bowen drew the Hammers level before half time only for Gabriel Magalhaes to head home the winner in the second half. The Hammers face a nerve-jangling Europa League second leg semi-final clash at Eintracht Frankfurt tonight and go into the tie 2-1 adrift. The winners face Rangers or RB Leipzig in the final.
