HERZOG CALLS FOR “TOUGH” ACTION ON IRAN

TRAGEDY STRIKES IN THE OLD CITY
Eli Kay z”l
BY DAVID SAFFER
President Isaac Herzog has called for tougher action against Iran during a three-day trip to the United Kingdom. Herzog told Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Israel’s position against the Iranian regime. Israel’s President also met Prince Charles, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Members of Parliament and Jewish community leaders during his official visit with First Lady Michal Herzog. Nuclear negotiations with Iran restart in Vienna on Monday and Herzog did not hold back on his viewpoint about the impending discussions regarding Iran when he met Johnson. “Be as tough as possible because we do not believe that they are operating in a bona fide manner, and only if all options are on the table may things move in the right direction,” he said. Johnson backed Herzog’s concern stating the world “doesn’t have much time” to stop Iran from

Herzog met Jewish community leaders

The gathering addressed issues facing British Jewry including the COVID-19 pandemic, antisemitism, Jewish Agency activities community relations with Israel. He continued, “Michal and I have put the issue of the relations between Israel and world Jewry as a top item on our priority list. We intend to invest a lot of time and effort to make sure that all Jews, wherever they are, whichever their denomination, whatever they believe in or don’t believe in, feel at home in the State of Israel.” Ambassador Hotovely, UK’s Ambassador to Israel Neil Wigan, and Jewish Agency CEO Amira Ahronoviz were also in attendance. BoD President Marie van de Zyl welcomed the makeup of the Israeli government. “The fact that there is a broad coalition in Israel now from the Right to the Left and with Jewish and Arab parties too, means that somehow our entire community can feel even more connected,” she said, adding that the Jewish community had a responsibility to stand up for Israel. Nina Freedman, UJS President, said the organisation was at the “frontline” of the fight against antisemitism, anti-Zionism and BDS. “We refuse to shy away from our Jewish identities and are making that known
through trailblazing campaigns to adopt the IHRA Definition of antisemitism and to educate the next generation about the Shoah,” she explained. “We are committed to shining a positive light on the successes of Israel, we are also encouraging students to take an active role in defending Israel.” Herzog met The Prince of Wales at his residence, Highgrove House, on Monday where they discussed the challenges of the climate crisis. The President thanked Prince Charles for his leadership on the environment and Holocaust education. He also noted that Israel has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and will contribute to global efforts through its innovative green technologies. Herzog announced the establishment of the Compassion and Perseverance Scholarship in Nursing in memory of Princess Alice of Battenberg, the Prince’s paternal grandmother, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Princess Alice is recognised by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations for saving Jews during the Holocaust and is buried on Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives. Herzog began the official visit by honouring Jewish Olympians murdered by Nazi Germany at an exhibition at Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium where he also celebrated the 92nd birthday of Holocaust survivor Sir Ben Helfgott. The President was also a guest of honour at a Genesis Prize Foundation event paying tribute to the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks.

From the Editor’s desk… BY YOSSI SAUNDERS Eli Kay z”l It was devastating to learn this week of yet another deadly terror attack in Israel, with Eli Kay z”l the latest person to lose his life in the fight for the Land of Israel that has been going on since Biblical times. Eli’s grandparents are Rabbi Shlomo and Lynndy Levin, from South Hampstead United Synagogue, and on behalf of the Jewish Weekly, I send them and the rest of their family our deepest condolences on this tragic loss. Eli died with Tefillin in hand, whilst another man who was shot at, miraculously survived when the bullet hit his tefillin shel yad. Two pairs of tefillin, one survivor. We cannot possibly fathom Hashem’s thoughts, but we can analyse what mankind did, and how things can be improved. The terrorist may his name be erased,
was known to authorities as a Hamas member, an organisation who are now recognised as evil terrorists even by the UK, a country unapologetically tolerant of Hamas and Hezbollah for too long. Yet not only was the terrorist left alone, but his wages were also paid by Israel! The school he worked for is funded by the Jerusalem Municipality, which surely begs huge questions of what on earth goes on between the police, army, the Jerusalem Municipality and government. Whilst analysing mankind, we are reminded once again of the evil on our doorstep, this time in the form of The Manchester Evening News, who printed an appalling headline about the attack. The newspaper’s apology doesn’t really seem to erase the same issue that the BBC and others such as The Metro this week, who all seem to excel in one sided reporting when it comes to Israel. As Eli’s brother said this week, let’s all take on
added, “We are immensely grateful that it will no longer have any safe harbour or support in the UK.” “During the recent surge in anti-Jewish racism on British streets we saw numerous examples of people wearing the Hamas emblem and even the Hamas-style headband traditionally worn by its suicide bombers,” said Gideon Falter, Campaign Against Antisemitism chief executive. “The Home Secretary’s announcement tells Islamists in this country and abroad in no uncertain terms that antisemitic terror and its supporters have no place in decent society and now they can be prosecuted if they peddle their hatred in Britain. Today is a good day in the fight against antisemitism.” A CAA poll last year showed 91% of British Jews wanted the Government to proscribe Hamas in its entirety. Director of campaign group We Believe in Israel Luke Akehurst added, “It is very important that this ridiculous and dangerous loophole is being closed. We have campaigned for many years for the entirety of the terrorist organisation Hamas to be banned in the UK so that it cannot propagandise and spread its antisemitic message of hatred of Israel and Jews here. Thousands of our grassroots supporters emailed their MPs to call for this action in recent months. We welcome the Government’s decision to listen to this concern and act on it. We call on all MPs of all parties to support this move.” It is a criminal offence to belong or invite support for a proscribed organisation or wear clothing seen to support the group. The maximum penalty is 14 years in prison and/or fine. The proscription order will be debated and is expected to be ratified this week.
something extra in Eli’s memory. May Eli’s remembrance be a blessing, give comfort to his loved ones and may we know no more sorrow. President Herzog The President of Israel Isaac Herzog spent a couple of days in London this week, meeting community leaders, Boris Johnson, Prince Charles and The Jewish Weekly! Let us hope his warnings of Iran will be adhered too, as talks on the ridiculous Obama nuclear deal resume next week. What can you expect from the Covid-19 vaccine if you’re expecting…
at increased risk of becoming seriously unwell with COVID-19. Specifically, there is higher risk of admission to intensive care, premature birth, pre-eclampsia, and stillbirth.” – Dr Teresa Kelly
WILL THE VACCINE GIVE ME OR MY BABY COVID-19?
“The vaccine cannot give you or your baby COVID-19, but it will protect you both at a time that you are both vulnerable. There are no additional ingredients that are harmful to pregnant women or their babies in the vaccine.”– Dr Teresa Kelly
CAN I TRY FOR A BABY AFTER BEING VACCINATED?
BY DR YOSSI ADLER, GP DR TERESA KELLY, CONSULTANT OBSTETRICIAN SUSIE WEISZ, MIDWIFE At Chanukah, we remember the miraculous events that saved the Jewish people from destruction. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a time of darkness across the globe as loved ones have been lost, and millions of families have suffered the harmful, life-changing effects of the virus. In the early days of the pandemic, we, as a community, prayed for a vaccine to reduce the terrible harm the COVID-19 virus caused, and still can. Now we have safe and reliable vaccines, which have protected many families from the worst effects of the virus and have been proven to dramatically reduce its impact of causing serious illness and death. Our Jewish medical health professionals, Dr Yossi Adler, a GP in London, and Manchester-based Dr Teresa Kelly, a consultant obstetrician, and midwife Susie Weisz answer some of your questions about vaccination including if you’re planning a pregnancy or are pregnant.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A BOOSTER?
“The government is currently offering the booster to anyone aged 40 and over and anyone aged 16 and over with a health condition that puts them at high risk from COVID-19. The booster is also being offered to health and social care workers as well as unpaid carers for an elderly or vulnerable person.” – Dr Yossi Adler
WHY DO CHILDREN NEED TO GET VACCINATED?
“My practice is recommending that all children aged 12 and over have the COVID-19 vaccine. While most children infected with COVID-19 experience mild symptoms, some do become quite unwell and some go on to develop serious multi-organ inflammatory disease. Even with children experiencing mild symptoms,
they will need to self-isolate which will have major disruptions to the effective functioning of schools. After nearly 2 years of disruption, it is vital our children stay in school.” “COVID-19 can affect anyone, regardless of their age, and we still do not fully understand the damage that can be done by this terrible virus. My colleagues are treating a growing number of young people who are living with ‘long Covid’ which has side effects such as extreme fatigue and weakness. Some young people are missing out on the things they want to do in life because of it, and this is heart-breaking. And, although the vaccine does not eliminate transmission, there is good evidence that it reduces it. Vaccination also reduce the risk of children infecting vulnerable grandparents and other members of the community at home or at the synagogue.” – Dr Yossi Adler
“If you are trying to get pregnant, we do recommend that you get vaccinated. My colleagues in the fertility clinic often won’t start any fertility treatment, until someone is vaccinated as they don’t want them to become unwell when they are having treatment. While there have been reports of women finding that their periods have been disrupted after vaccination, the vaccine has not been found to be the cause of any period problems. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) said there is no evidence
IS IT TOO LATE TO GET MY FIRST DOSE? “No, it is never too late, and it has never been easier. All you need to do is visit www.nhs.uk/covidvaccine or dial 119 which are free of charge. Or visit www. nhs.uk/grab-a-jab to find a convenient vaccine walk-in site near you (you do not even need an NHS number or to be registered with a GP for this).” – Dr Yossi Adler
IS COVID-19 DISEASE SERIOUS IN PREGNANCY?
“If you are pregnant and catch COVID-19 you may have a mild illness or no symptoms. But we have seen many more pregnant women becoming sick with COVID-19. Getting COVID-19 when you are pregnant increases the risk that you will be admitted to hospital, and the most recent data shows 1 in 5 of the most seriously unwell patients in intensive care with COVID-19 are unvaccinated pregnant women. In the later stages of pregnancy (after 28 weeks), people are

that any of the vaccines affect the fertility of men or women. Anyone trying to have a baby as well as those who are thinking about having a baby should have the COVID-19 vaccine to protect themselves and their baby from the virus.” – Dr Teresa Kelly
I’M BREASTFEEDING, CAN I HAVE THE VACCINE?
“The COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for women who are breastfeeding. There is no need to stop breastfeeding at, or after, the time of the vaccine as the vaccine does not pass through breast milk.” – Susie Weisz

11-year-old discovers 2,000-year-old silver coin on Temple Mount BY ADAM MOSES An 11-year-old girl volunteering at an archaeological dig at the City of David National Park in Jerusalem has discovered a rare 2,000-year-old silver coin believed to have been minted at the Temple Mount. If it was minted at the holy site then the 14 gram coin, found by Liel Krutokop, engraved with a cup, “Israeli shekel” and “second year” would relate to the second year of the Great Revolt against the Romans (67-68 CE) and prove to be a truly rare antiquity. The Israeli Antiquities Authority believe the other side of the coin with an inscription plus “Holy Jerusalem” in ancient Hebrew was an engraving of the high priest’s headquarters in the Temple. Dr. Robert Kool, coin department head at the IAA, is of the opinion the coin might have been minted by a priest assisting the rebel leaders assistance. “Where else could you find silver in such high quantity and quality in those days? Only in the Temple,” he said. “If so, we can cautiously say that this coin is, apparently, one of the few items in our possession today originated in the Temple (Mount).”
Liel Krutokop with the coin she found
Kool added, “This is a rare find, as out of the many thousands of coins discovered to date in archaeological excavations, only about 30 coins are silver, from the time of the Great Revolt. “Everyone knows the Arch of Titus in

Rome and the descriptions of the spoils taken from the Temple that appear there, but not many know of the enormous reserves of silver that were in the Temple.” “One can only imagine the size of the loot and the amount of money that the Romans
found in the Temple’s warehouses,” commented Dr. Amit Reem, an archaeologist in the IAA Jerusalem District. The IAA said in a statement, “This road (where the coin was found), which connected the Pool of Siloam south of the City of David to the Temple Mount in the north, was Jerusalem’s main road during the Second Temple period, where thousands of pilgrims marched to the Temple.” Kool added. “There is no doubt that there would have been extensive trade here. This is evidenced by the numerous bronze weights and coins we have found here. But finding a rebel coin made of pure silver is definitely very special and exciting. “ He continued, “A currency is a sign of sovereignty. If you go into rebellion, use one of the most obvious symbols of independence and use coins. The inscription on the coin clearly expresses the aspirations of the rebels. The choice to use the ancient Hebrew script, which was no longer in use at the time, is not accidental. The use of this script came to express the desire of the people of the period for the days of David and Solomon and the days of a united Jewish kingdom, days when the people of Israel had full independence in the country.”

Old City shooting Israel will act against survivor saved by tefillin Iran warns Bennett BY SIMCHA ABIR
BY ADAM MOSES Thousands of people attended the funeral of Eliyahu (Eli) Kay who was killed in a terror attack in Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday morning. Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai, Culture Minister Chili Tropper and Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau attended. Kay was laid to rest at Jerusalem’s Har HaMenuchot Cemetery. Eli’s brother, Kasriel, told mourners he would not eulogise his brother as per the Chabad tradition but called on them to change their lives for the better in his brother’s memory. His family had recently joined him in Israel from South Africa. South Africa Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein said that the Kay family had been pillars of the South African Jewish community for generations. “We are heartbroken at their loss,” he said. The South African Board of Jewish Deputies said it was “devastated” by the news. “The South African Jewish community is reeling from shock,” a statement said. The Western Wall tour guide was on his way to work when he was fatally shot by a Hamas terrorist, named as Fadi Abu Shkhaydam. Israeli forces shot dead the assailant shortly after he had also wounded two Border police and two civilians. Medics transported Kay, 26, to hospital but he died from his wounds. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has bolstered police and security forces in the Old City in the aftermath of the attack. Bennett sent condolences to the Kay family and briefed ministers about the attack at his cabinet meeting. “The forces acted swiftly, two female officers and other troops on the scene quickly shot the assailant,” he said. “In light of the fact that this was the second attack in days, I’ve instructed the security forces to prepare for possible further terror attempts.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz added, “We will continue to fight terrorism wherever it appears.” Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai said that Eli was the “story of Israel at its best.” Since the attack, reports have emerged that Abu Shkhaydam taught at the Israeli Arab Al-Rashidiya Secondary School for Boys in the Muslim Quarter under a PA curriculum. The Education Ministry issued a statement that his appointment is being investigated by security forces. The Jerusalem Municipality is set to respond. Deputy Jerusalem Mayor Aryeh King was not surprised that he worked as a teacher funded by the Education Ministry and municipality. “I have been calling on mayors and education ministers for years to monitor the content taught in the schools,” he said. “It’s our obligation to monitor the content being taught to the city’s students because

the supervision of the Education Ministry cannot be trusted.” Public Security Minister Omer Barlev described the attack as “predetermined” as Abu Shkhaydam’s wife had left the country a few days earlier. It is believed the 42-year-old was dressed as ultra-Orthodox man carrying a submachine gun and knife. Abu Shkhaydam was known to police as a Hamas member but not considered a terror threat. Security forces searched Abu Shkhaydam’s home, President Issac Herzog condemned the attack and called on the international community to ban Hamas’ political wing as a terrorist organisation. The attack has shocked Israelis while reports surfaced of a miraculous escape for Rabbi Ze’ev Katzenellenbogen who received light injuries as a bullet stuck his Tefillin Shel Yad. Hamas, hailed Abu Shkayhdam and paid tribute to him on Al-Quds TV channel. Kay, who was engaged to be married, grew up in Johannesburg’s Chabad community. Graduating from Torah Academy, he studied the Rabbinical College of Australia and New Zealand before making aliyah in 2015. A student at Chabad’s Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Kiryat Gat, Kay, who lived in Modi’in, served as a combat fighter in the Paratrooper’s Brigade. Yeshiva Dean, Rabbi Reuben Schneersohn, said that Kay was an incredible boy from a good family, who wanted to add Torah study to his life. He is survived by his parents, Avi and Devorah Kay, siblings Kasriel, Chanan and Na’ama and grandparents, Jessie and Cliffie Kay, and Rabbi Shlomo and Lynndy Levin of South Hampstead Synagogue, London.
Israel will act against Iran and not be bound by a new Iranian nuclear deal Prime Minister Naftali Bennett warned this week. Indirect negotiations on the 2015 JCPOA deal restart on Monday. Bennett offered frank thoughts at a security and policy conference at Reichman University. Describing Iran as Israel’s “most significant enemy for three decades”, Bennett criticised the Netanyahu government for allowing Iran to advance its nuclear capability. “Iran is further along in its nuclear program than ever before and its enrichment machine is more advanced and broader,” he explained. “Iran has also been consistently and persistently successful in encircling Israel in rings of militias and rockets from every direction. “The Iranians have surrounded the State of Israel with missiles while they sit safely in Tehran. They send us proxies, from Lebanon, from Syria, from Gaza and from even further away.” Bennett said he had evaluated the stance with Iran since taking up office and without countenancing war noted that Israel had to utilise its relative advantages in a more effective manner due to a strong economy, cyber capabilities, democracy, international support. “We face complicated times,” he noted. “It
is possible that there will be disputes with the best of our friends.” “Iran is much more vulnerable than is commonly thought,” Bennett added. Finance Minister Avigdor Liberman said that with or without an agreement, Iran would have a nuclear weapon within five years maximum. And Defence Minister Benny Gantz said Iran had attempted to smuggle explosives to terrorists in the West Bank in 2018. Israel intercepted the attempt near Beit She’an in northern Israel. “Iran is not only a threat to Israel, but to the entire global community, therefore the time to act is now,” Gantz noted. “We must not allow Iran to become a nuclear power, which will lead to its terror activities running rampant across the region and even trigger an arms race in the Middle East.” He added that Iran was attempting to become “a global hegemon” to impose its extreme ideology in which “human rights are trampled”. Gantz went on to explain that Tehran was trafficking oil and weapons to Venezuela, mobilising its Quds Force in South America and attempting to build an influence in Afghanistan. Israel’s air force has proposed working with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain against the Iranian drone threat.
Concern over Jewish students World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder hosted Israeli Minister of Interior Ayelet Shaked at WJC’s American section’s annual governing board meeting to discuss world Jewry. Topics discussed in the question-and-answer session included the rise of antisemitism in Europe and US, anti-Israel and anti-Jewish exhibitions on university and college campuses, Jewish education in Jewish identity, and gaining support for Israel. “WJC is deeply concerned about the challenges facing Jewish students on campus,” Lauder said, adding that young people were a top priority. New projects in the WJC NextGen
department would discover Jewish student leaders and train activists to stand up for Israel. Shaked discussed the threat of Iran, agreed on a need to train Jewish leaders and reflected conversations with college students that left her distressed about antisemitism on campuses. She also discussed her ministry and challenges faced by Diaspora Jews who wanted to visit Israel during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shaked reassured delegates that Israel was encouraging tourism and Aliyah in a safe manner. She added that a priority was the visa waiver to enable Israeli citizens to visit the US.
CER discuss European Jewry leaders The Conference of European Rabbis discussed training young rabbis and future leaders of European Jewry in Munich this week. Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt was joined in the hearing by Europe’s leading chief rabbis hosted by the Bavarian Government. Katharina von Schnurbein, European Commission coordinator on antisemitism, and European Parliament President David Sassoli attended. Ms von Schnurbein highlighted her commitment to protecting Jewish practices and combatting antisemitism across Europe.

Chief Rabbi Goldschmidt met Minister-President of Bavaria Markus Soder to discuss Jewish life in Germany and online antisemitism. “It is clear that more needs to be done to tackle the spread of online hate and it is incumbent upon social media companies to implement tighter regulations over its users’ content, especially when of a minacious and racially-charged nature,” he said. “No platform should ever enable such vitriol. “Dr Soder has committed to using his power to protect religious freedoms in Bavaria and beyond to the best of his ability.”

Gantz signs bilateral deal with Morocco BY SIMCHA ABIR Israel and Morocco have signed an accord to cooperate on security, intelligence and arms sales. Defense Minister Benny Gantz met with Moroccan counterpart Abdellatif Loudiyi and signed the historic bilateral agreement in Rabat yesterday. The two nations formalised relations last year. Gantz said in a statement that the agreement was “very significant” as it would allow Israel to exchange ideas, enter joint projects and allow Israeli military exports. “This is an important and historic visit,” Gantz added before boarding an El Al flight at Ben Gurion Airport on Tuesday. “This is the first formal visit by a Defense Minister to
this country. We will continue to strengthen bilateral ties. It is eminently important that we have a successful journey.” Gantz held meetings with Loudiyi, Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, military chief and other dignitaries. He visited the tomb of Mohamed V, grandfather of the reigning monarch, ahead of a signing ceremony. Tel Aviv University professor Bruce Maddy-Weitzman reportedly told media outlets that Gantz’s visit and the signing of an MOU was no coincidence. “It’s possible that in the context of the Moroccan-Algerian tensions, the Moroccans were the ones who were keen on this,” he explained. “It would seem to me that the Moroccans are the ones who are keen on
showing everybody, their own public, their Algerian rivals, the West, that they are deepening their relationship with Israel.” The two-day trip followed Foreign Minister Yair Lapid inaugurating Israel’s diplomatic representation in Rabat last August. Lapid’s first visit was the first by an Israeli minister since 2003. Documents signed by Lapid and Bourita established a political consultation between the ministries on culture, sport and youth, and direct flights between the two nations. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed Morocco and Israel creating a more peaceful, secure and prosperous future for Middle East people. Former US President Donald Trump brokered the Israel-Morocco accord and
recognised Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara as part of the agreement. Morocco’s 1975 annexation of Western Sahara is not recognised by the United Nations. A number of political parties in Morocco back the US-brokered agreement but Islamist groups rejected the deal. Hamas and Palestinians branded the accord a “betrayal”. Around one million Jews originate from Morocco in Israel, 70,000 visited last year to trace roots. The two nations had low-level diplomatic relations in the 1990s, but Morocco ended diplomatic ties with Israel and closed its mission in Tel Aviv in 2000 though informal ties continued.
Rafiq apologises over antisemitism posts but debate continues BY DAVID SAFFER Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq has been rightly praised for highlighting racism in the sport following a highly emotional hearing of the House of Commons’ Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee last week. Racism, he stated, had destroyed his career. The sporting and political world lambasted his former county for the way they handled his complaints over many years. Cricket’s governing body, the ECB, and Yorkshire CCC both made bold statements to tackle racism. It seemed the story was told but soon after the hearing a media storm broke as news came through that Rafiq, a talented spin bowler, had sent antisemtic posts to another Asian cricketer on social media when he was a teenager. Rafiq, 30, had to explain his behaviour after the huge outpouring of sympathy that came his way and felt “sick to the stomach” over the posts. He quickly released a statement accepting he had “no excuses” for an exchange of antisemitic posts in 2011. “I am ashamed of this exchange and have now deleted it so as not to cause further offence,” he said. “I was nineteen at the time and I hope and believe I am a different person today. I am incredibly angry at myself and I apologise to the Jewish community and everyone who is rightly offended by this.” Reports this week have now said Rafiq is to be investigated by the ECB. The furore has been well documented. Dave Rich, of CST, was not that surprised when the antisemitic story hit the headlines. But he was disappointed given what Rafiq had experienced. “Sadly, racist insults of this type about Jews are all too common, so while my heart sank when I saw what Azeem Rafiq had written, I wasn’t completely shocked, but it was even more disappointing and

Oknin’s welcomed home after Turkey nightmare BY ADAM MOSES Mordi and Natali Oknin are resting at home in Mod’in after returning to Israel following diplomatic efforts by the government for their release from prison in Istanbul on suspicion of espionage. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his role in bringing about the release of the couple. This was the first conversation between the leaders of Israel and Turkey in eight years. The Prime Minister’s office added in a statement that he expressed his appreciation for Turkey’s handling of the crisis to ensure a positive end. Bennett described the diplomatic incident as a “humanitarian” matter and welcomed the open channels of communications to “discreetly” resolve the problem. It has been reported that the episode will benefit relations between the nations especially after Erdogan’s past criticism of Israeli policies towards the Palestinians. Bennett spoke with the Israeli couple on their return to Israel last Thursday. “Welcome to Israel,” he said. “We are so happy that you have arrived safely.” Erdogan spoke with Foreign Minister

Yair Lapid and President Isaac Herzog, noting that Turkish-Israeli relations were important for security and stability in the Middle East. Herzog thanked Erdogan for his “personal involvement and contribution” in securing the Oknins’ release. Both highlighted the need for regional peace and agreed to
stay in touch. The Oknin’s flew back to Israel on a private jet organised by the Foreign Ministry. Government minister Matan Kahana confirmed Turkish authorities accepted the Oknins were innocent but recognised that the arrests could have escalated into a “needless crisis”. The Oknin’s were arrested and detained for two weeks after allegedly taking a photograph of Erdogan’s home in Istanbul. Both were charged with “political and military espionage” according to Turkish media reports. The Oknins denied the charges, Lapid insisted they were not part of Israel’s intelligence agency. Israeli diplomats worked “around the clock” to secure the repatriation of the Oknins after a Turkish court remanded them in custody for 20 days. Bennett stated the Oknin’s innocence and kept the family updated about a “complex situation”. Bennett also denied claims the couple had connections to an Israeli intelligence agency. Due to the political sensitivity of the situation Lapid appealed to MKs, ministers and media outlets to address the incident “responsibly” to ensure a safe return. The Israeli Embassy liased with the Turkish Foreign Ministry. Mossad and the National Security Adviser worked with connections. It was reported that Israel may update travel advice to Turkey. A Turkish national, reportedly with the couple, was arrested on suspicion of political and military espionage.

Eliyahu David Kay z”l OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN Remembering someone comes in different forms and is sparked by many different things. How many times have we connected a memory of where we were or what we were doing when a particular piece of news came through? Sometimes it is just some words which prompt a memory. Whenever I hear the words ‘it’s too cold to snow’ I am reminded of the time I was skiing with my sons in temperatures below -200 C in driving snow. When I heard of the murder of Eli Kay I was at home, about to have lunch. I don’t know if that memory will remain though I do know is that having thought about his loss, we should be thinking about a response. How do we respond to this vile murder? Certainly with anger, though in what direction? For reasons which escape understanding, various elements in the Jewish Community have seen fit to attack other Jews instead of facing the enemies intent on
demonising Zionism and destroying Israel. Claims of ‘far right’ and ‘racist’ abound from people who should know better and for reasons passing understanding some communal leaders have openly stated they will boycott any meeting where the Israeli Ambassador is present. The fact that this serves only to undermine us as a community is bad enough, but perhaps what is of more concern is what sort of warped thinking leads to this stupid approach? What Eli’s murder tells us, is that this posturing is simply irrelevant. He did many different things other than serving in the IDF. He volunteered on a left-wing kibbutz and worked the land because that is what was important to him, the land of Israel. As a guide he was only interested in educating people irrespective of who they were or their background.
Many of us will feel this loss so much more keenly because his story is a familiar one for those us who know families with a son or daughter who did the same as Eli…

RACISM Dear Editor Every day we see news items of racism in all spheres of life, and the perpetrators are outed and brought to account. Yet one form of racism seems to go unnoticed or ignored and appears not to be of importance. Jewish students at universities especially Bristol and Warwick are subjected to vile insults regularly e.g one student was told to “gas herself” while another received death threats.Where is the outrage of the other students and the university authorities to call out those that seem intent to make Jewish Students life unbearable and deal with them. Also how could a convoy of cars be allowed to come from outside London to roam areas with a large Jewish inhabitants. Screaming through loud speakers “Kill the Jews” “we will rape your daughters” and are not stopped by the police? Because “JEWS DO NOT COUNT!” Yours sincerely Eric Silver
Hamas on the other hand has no interest is whether a Jew is left leaning or right, or whether they do or do not approve of the Ambassador. All they care about is killing Jews, and that is what they did last Sunday. Many of us will feel this loss so much more keenly because his story is a familiar one for those us who know families with a son or daughter who did the same as Eli; served in the IDF and became an Israeli citizen. This proximity enhances our sensitivity and exacerbates our sense of loss. Which takes us back to what sort of response is now needed. Condemnation is easy enough, but it fades fast. What is needed now is steady, continuous action to rebut the lies and hypocrisy which surround the ‘progressives’ when they opine on Israel. Celebrities who sign letters about banning of NGOs need to be told
firmly and politely that they do not know the whole story. The response to Eli’s murder should be to inform and educate, not by yelling in an echo chamber but by engaging with those whose understanding is based only on the lies told to them. The level of animosity within the Jewish Community is at its highest for some time. Instead of fighting each other this energy was directed by way of informing those outside the community the result might not be instant, but over time there would certainly be some progress. We often say that a person’s memory should be a blessing. Why cannot that memory be a constant gentle reminder that this was a young man who believed in Zionism and Israel and that our response should be to honour that memory by sharing those beliefs as much as possible. Eli, may your dear soul rest in peace. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.
COP 26 – WE’RE ALL IN THE MIX Dear Editor I refer to the article, “Religious groups COP26 discussion,” which was published in last week’s edition, (THE JEWISH WEEKLY, 11 November) and commend the following poem to the Jewish community people of all faiths and none, and all of humanity as we end this year 2021 Yours sincerely J D Milaric ECO, WHAT WE SHOULD KNOW AND THE WAY TO GO Global warming, Climate change, pollution and even Coronavirus We might well ask, why is nature currently doing all of this to us? Because it’s always been the case that we must recognise Caused harm to, and killed people, yet humanity survives These are just a few, recent, manifestations of the power of nature Failing to confront and act on them will directly impact on our future We can’t be complacent any more For, nature will see to that for sure These are perhaps the three main topics now to the fore As we’re belatedly realising, worldwide, like never before How nature can, and does wreak its revenge When human beings fail to rise to the challenge

On a plain-suit lead, declarer would win and lead a spade to the queen. On this layout, East would win the trick with the king of spades and shift to the king of trumps. Declarer would allow that to hold and, after winning the trump continuation, he would cash the ace of spades and ruff a spade for his tenth trick. He would lose only two trump tricks and a spade. However, at the table, West found the annoying lead of the ten of trumps. East followed with the jack of trumps and declarer found the necessary move of playing low from hand. After winning the trump continuation with the ace, declarer cashed the ace of diamonds, played a low club to dummy’s queen and ruffed a diamond. Dummy was re-entered with a low club to the king for a second diamond ruff. Next a club to dummy’s ace allowed declarer to ruff a third diamond. When declarer cashed the ace of spades, he had made one trick in spades, the ace of trumps, three diamond ruffs in hand, the ace of diamonds and three clubs for a total of nine tricks. Finally, he advanced the jack of clubs. Either this would be declarer’s tenth trick or, if ruffed, dummy’s six of trumps would fill that role.

Carol was awarded an MBE in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to the Jewish community, specifically Holocaust refugees and survivors and members of the AJR, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Wonderfully, her family arranged for her to be presented with her richly deserved award in her final few days. AJR chief executive Michael Newman said, “Having worked with Carol for twenty

years, I can safely say that the AJR wouldn’t be the organisation we are today without her devotion to her work and our mission. She was hugely popular and greatly appreciated among the membership. On a personal level, Carol was always full of sage advice using her experience and intuition to be a positive thoughtful influence, constantly seeking new ways to improve and advance us and our activities. We are all devastated and will miss her terribly.” JVN tweeted: “This is a blow for JVN and for the Jewish Community. For many years as a JVN Trustee, Carol kept us close to our key goals and gave us a sense of reality about volunteers and volunteer management. She was a true friend to JVN. May her memory be a blessing.” Dr Toby Simpson, Director of The Wiener Holocaust Library, with which the AJR works closely, said: “I’m stunned and so sad to hear this news. Carol delivered fun, accessible informative training sessions to newcomer volunteers and staff at the Wiener for many years. I loved working with Carol whenever I had the chance and privilege to do so. I will miss her.” The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust tweeted: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Carol Hart MBE. Carol was a long-standing member of our Partnership Group and we valued her expertise and devotion enormously. She will be sorely missed by us at HMDT, and by the members of the HMD Partnership Group.”

Local councillors attend Jewish Hertfordshire seminar Over 70 local councillors heard about issues affecting the Jewish community of Hertfordshire which has the fastest growing Jewish population in the UK. Participants at the Jewish Hertfordshire: A Seminar for Councillors heard about antisemitism, education, health and social care, and planning, as well the community’s relationship with Israel. Most synagogues in Hertfordshire were represented and local leaders had an opportunity to speak to councillors about communities. Organisations including CST, UJIA, Mitzvah Day, Jewish Care, Norwood, Jami alongside local schools Clore Shalom and Immanuel College attended. Local MP and Conservative Party Chairman Oliver Dowden MP sent a goodwill message. “I’m very much aware of and engaged in the issues that matter to the community, from defending kosher practices and community security to tackling online hate,” he said. Steve Reed MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said it was important to support Hertfordshire’s diverse communities including the

Jewish community. “In recent years we’ve seen an increase in antisemitism and it’s important that we all understand what support and help the community needs to tackle the consequences of that,” he noted. Michael Wegier, Board of Deputies, said the seminar was further evidence the Jewish community has a bright future in Hertfordshire. “The relationships between locally elected representatives and community have been deepened through this seminar,” he noted. Claudia Mendoza, Jewish Leadership Council, added, “The seminar provided an opportunity to magnify and amplify the work of the Jewish charitable sector and to educate councillors from across Hertfordshire on the needs of the Jewish communities they serve.” Daniel Kosky, Hertfordshire Jewish Forum said: “It is vital for councillors to understand the needs of the Jewish communities they serve. We very much hope this seminar will be the start of a close working relationship with councillors from across Hertfordshire.” The event was organised by the Board, Hertfordshire Jewish Forum and Jewish Leadership Council.

22 SUPPLEMENT BY DAVID SAFFER Chanukah is days away and I must admit I’m looking forward to the first night because the magic of the festival will be evident in the excitement of my four grandsons when I light the first candle on Sunday. Okay, I’m sure they are looking forward to opening their presents whilst my children are anticipating the ‘homemade’ latkes, salt beef and doughnuts on offer, but Chanukah for me has always been a wonderful time of year. The four ‘mouseketeers’ in my life, who range in age from one to five, have all been enjoying Chanukah-based activities at school, nursery and playgroup whether learning songs, drawing Chanukiahs and dreidels or hearing the age-old Chanukah story. There is a real sense of wonderment with the festival. Now, Chanukah is not all about presents but every generation of children think they have been around when the best gifts are available. As a kid growing up in Leeds, Chanukah was a big deal in my family and for as long as I can recall I’ve bought my parents, Harold and Valerie Saffer, a present. Sadly, this will not be the case this year as my father passed away a few weeks ago and this is the first festival since so I have been doing some reminiscing approaching this Chanukah. Every year after the menorah and singing every verse of Ma’oz Tzur it would be present time. Getting a prized Thunderbird 2 when I was barely older than my eldest grandson is my oldest memory and particularly memorable, although I was not best pleased when the Thunderbird 4 disappeared down the bathroom sink! Annuals
Chanukah is not about the presents but memories it creates were a regular theme with Beezer, Beano or Dandy. As a teen, Shoot annual was the norm, year by year. And with my team, Leeds United always being featured, I was satisfied. For me there was never a lull in Chanukah anticipation even as adulthood approached. As a student, after I met my better half, Deborah in the early-80s, I worked part time at Fenwick’s in the Toy Department and was part of a manic couple of months when the Cabbage Patch dolls craze was globally all the rage. It was crazy for weeks back in 1985 with desperate parents calling nonstop from around the world at times for the ‘must-have’ gift. As a dabbler in sporting memorabilia, for the purposes of this article, I’ve looked into whether there is value in the dolls from ’85.
Most are worth around the £15 -£25 mark. However, after a bit of research it appears a hand signed 1979 Xavier Roberts Little People Twins is really collectable, the last time one sold at auction was for $3,500 in 2018. And a 1985 Theresa Ann sold on Ebay for $2,000. I might have sold one of these myself at Fenwick’s! As our children were growing up the excitement at Chanukah was always palpable. They attended Jewish schools so the annual Chanukah concert was something to enjoy. And of course, doughnuts and latkes galore. The 1990s was the decade of Polly pockets, Tamagotchi, Nintendo, Pokeman, Game Boys, Furby, Barbie, Dear Diary and Beanie Babies. I recall almost getting into a fight in 1993 over a coveted Thunderbirds Tracy Island in Brent Cross! Sadly, an original island
25 NOVEMBER 2021 does not have the Cabbage Patch factor but Beanie Babies certainly do. According to one article online the top five lists a Princess the Bear worth $500,000, Lefty the Donkey and Righty the Elephant $50,000, Brownie the Bear $20,000, Valentino the Bear $19,000 and Claude the Crab $10,000. Now Chanukah is not about buying a present as an investment but it’s certainly food for thought. And talking about food, I have to mention latkes, sorry not doughnuts. And when it comes to latkes, I’m a fanatic and whilst those in kosher shops are very tasty the Saffer home-made ones by my better half, in my opinion and anyone who has tasted them, are without doubt the best. So, this week I peeled a huge bag of potatoes with the reward of being official taster and they were as good as ever! Before I go, back to presents, and checking with my children of the best year ever, the consensus was when they were all under 10 years of age in the mid-90s. Money was really tight so Deborah and I decided to save all the free gifts from cereal boxes for a year. By Chanukah we had a huge Tupperware box full of items worth next to nothing, but each night after lighting the menorah and singing traditional songs there was free for all lucky dip! Maybe that is the secret of Chanukah, it’s not the value of presents but memories they create. Every year I’m reminded of that yesteryear Chanukah gone by. So as another festive period comes around all that remains is to wish Happy Chanukah to all Jewish Weekly readers. And enjoy your latkes!

Eight top tips for getting ahead in your job search
that make us anxious and impact upon our ability to perform at work. Learning to understand and accept this is the first step towards understanding what confidence looks like for you so you can keep going and progress towards achieving your goals.
As we approach Chanukah and the end of the year there will be plenty things on your mind – festivities, family, friends and, of course, food. It may also a time that you’re starting to think about looking for a new job. You wouldn’t be alone. A recent study reported that two million workers are set to change jobs before the end of 2021. It also found that more than a quarter of people are actively job hunting right now, with 75% of those open to changing industries for the right role. The good news is there are lots of opportunities out there thanks to a mix of buoyant economic news, the end of pandemic restrictions and employers looking to fill many positions. But it’s not always easy to land your perfect role, especially if you’ve been out of work for a while or are looking to change career or industry. At Work Avenue, the Jewish community’s leading employment and business support organisation, we have helped thousands of people find work. We’ve pulled together eight essential tips to help you get ahead in your job search and, getting in the festive

spirit, have used them to spell out CHANUKAH.
C IS FOR CV: You need to create a contemporary and elegant CV that is tailored to the demands of each position you apply for. The closer you can align yourself to the demands of the role by clearly showcasing your skills and experience, the harder it is for the recruiter to say you don’t match. H IS FOR HOMEWORK: There
is no substitute for sound preparation and doing your homework on all aspects of the application process – including researching the company, getting ready for the interview and thinking about how your skills and experience match the role you are applying for.
A IS FOR ADOPTION: Make sure to adopt
the employer’s perspective. See yourself through their eyes and what they are looking for to fulfil the demands of the role, not just your skills and experience in
isolation. By making sure everything you do is aligned to the employer’s perspective and their recruitment need, you will get a great edge in landing the job you want.
N IS FOR NETWORKING: If you are looking
for an opportunity, you are probably looking for a person! The more people you engage with and talk to, the greater the chance of opening up useful and productive relationships that lead somewhere. Whether it’s at a networking event, like those run by Work Avenue, reaching out to old contacts or finding new ones, we can’t stress enough how important this is.
U IS FOR UNDERSTANDING: Make sure to understand your transferable skills and how they can be applied to the role in question – and how you can ensure your prospective employer understands it too. K IS FOR KEEP GOING: We all have things
A IS FOR ACHIEVEMENTS: Don’t be shy! Be ready to articulate what makes you proud, and why. Achievements can be great things you’ve done at work, but also in the outside world through your hobbies and volunteering.

With Chanukah almost here, some people may still be struggling to find the perfect gift for their children, partner, friends or family member. Micaela Blitz offers some great ideas that are not only unique and original, but also support small businesses. LARK THE SHARK BY NATALIE & HENRY NEWMAN
Giving a child a book as a gift can help them to learn about important subjects in an engaging and entertaining way and will help their imagination develop. In the illustrated rhyming book ‘Lark the Shark’ by Natalie & Henry Newman young readers are taught about being kind and caring to others, as well as showing that same care to the environment. The idea for the book was inspired by a conversation between Natalie and her then 7-year-old son, Henry who were discussing water pollution, sharks and why they have such a bad reputation to humans. Henry pointed out that they didn’t deserve such negativity as the reason they attack people is because they were just protecting their home. Natalie started thinking about this further, and together they began developing a story that eventually became Lark the Shark. In the book, he is on a mission to clean up his home in the ocean. Natalie lives in Essex with her husband and two children and is a hairdresser, but always had an interesting in writing. Writing this book with her son has been a great bonding experience for both and she is really proud of what they have achieved. The book, which is suitable for children up to 8 years old has attracted fans from around the world, and Natalie has received drawings and letters from young readers who have fallen in love with Lark and his story. The mother and son writing pair are already working on more ideas together creating new adventures for Lark the Shark. ‘Lark the Shark’ by Natalie and Henry Newman is available in paperback and hardback from most book outlets and online. THIS CHANUKAH, JEWISH CHILD’S DAY IS MAKING SURE EVERY CHILD IS INCLUDED Living with autism and learning disabilities doesn’t just affect the individual with the diagnosis, but everyone around them too. Similarly, caring for an autistic child doesn’t just depend on one person, but an entire family made up of relatives, therapists and specialists. When Alex’s already challenging behaviour took a turn for the worse, his mother was in desperate need of some support. Alex’s difficulty adjusting to changes in his routine led to numerous meltdowns and feelings of isolation. During this time, he would physically harm himself and those around him. This was happening every day. Introducing Alex to unique projects funded by Jewish Child’s Day changed his and his family’s lives. With access to specialist toys and library equipment, designed to provide comfort and focus for children with sensory processing challenges, he quickly became more at peace with himself. Freed from his previous sensory and emotional overload, Alex entered a world of calm and inclusion. Not just Alex, but his entire family too.

Chanukah: A Final Taste of Sovereignty BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN The celebration of Chanukah is most often associated with the dramatic miracle of the menorah oil. After vanquishing the invading Greek armies, it was crucial that the iconic menorah lighting be restarted as quickly as possible to signal the resurgent Jewish victory. Unfortunately, most of the oil in the plundered Temple had been vandalized and contaminated. The sensational discovery of one unopened and unmarred flask of oil was, itself, cause for great joy. Witnessing that miniscule amount of oil steadily burn for eight days confirmed, that, even in the tail end of the second Temple era, Hashem would still visit supernatural miracles upon His people. The “few” had defeated the “many” and a righteous band of brothers had overcome the invincible Northern Greek armies. The greatest armies of the world could not defeat the Jewish spirit. This enduring message of Jewish survival and heroism was embodied in the miracle of the oil. Surprisingly, in his account of the Chanukah episode, the Rambam doesn’t stress the oil miracle as the primary cause for celebration. In reality, there were numerous miracles during the Mikdash era, yet none of them were enshrined into a week-long festival. What is it about the Chanukah story-beyond the oil miracle- that warrants historical celebration? The Rambam provides the answer: As a result of the divinely-aided military triumph “Jewish sovereignty was restored for more than two hundred years.” Under Greek persecution, our autonomy had been suspended and the Chanukah victory restored Jewish self-governance. Chanukah doesn’t just celebrate a miracle which occurred in a “historical vacuum”. Chanukah reshaped Jewish history by restoring our lost sovereignty. Ironically, the Chanukah-restored sovereignty during the final two centuries of the second Temple era was sadly disappointing. Regrettably, the leaders of the Chanukah uprising quickly fell from grace. The gemara in Kiddushin claims that if a person approaches a Jewish court claiming to be of Chashmonaim stock, he or she is assumed to be non-pedigreed and is banned from marrying pedigreed Jews. Within a few generations, the entire Chashmonai dynasty was massacred. The only surviving members of the household to escape this grisly death were a few slave hands or maidservants. Since all the pedigreed members of this line were murdered, evidently, a person who claims Chashmonai heritage must be slave. This cruel outcome was actually a punishment for the illegal usurpation of the throne. Ideally Judaism mandates a
division between religion and politics. Political authority is delegated to the tribe of Yehuda, while supervision of religious ceremonies in the Mikdash is the province of the house of Levi. A mix of religion and politics is always toxic, and never ends well for either. As descendants of Levi, the Chashmonaim were charged with Mikdash ceremonies but enjoyed absolutely no claim for political power. Usurping the throne, and violating this seminal division within Jewish society, they were annihilated. A heroic band of warriors who had valiantly defended Yerushalayim, committed a grievous national offense and were practically erased from history. It did not end well for the house of the Chashmonaim. Furthermore, some of the surviving members of the Chashmonai line became dishonorable. John Hyrcanus served as a Cohen Gadol, ascended the throne in the year 135, and spearheaded great military victories over hostile neighbors. He greatly expanded the borders of Israel, refortified the walls of Yerushalayim and instituted numerous worthwhile decrees. Yet, sadly, toward the end of his reign he had a falling out with the Sanhedrin and turned against them, becoming a sworn enemy of the Rabbinic establishment, and a leading member of the notorious Saducee movement. His infamous “late-in-life” desertion became a metaphor of infamy. The Talmud cautions: “don’t ever take your faith for granted -even until your last day. After all John Hyrcanus deserted our traditions even after 80 years of reigning as Cohen Gadol.” John’s son, Alexander Jannaeus or Yannai Hamelech had a similarly checkered career. Having been personally insulted by a ruling of the Sanhedrin, he murdered 6000 innocent people and barred pilgrims from freely entering the Temple. These two leading luminaries or the house of Chasmonaim brought disrepute to the family. The leaders of the Chanukah miracle launched a dynasty which betrayed our tradition, murdered innocent people and became embroiled in civil wars. Not only did the Chanukah leadership ultimately turn suspect, but the sovereignty we experienced during that period was severely flawed. The two-hundred intervening years between the Chanukah miracle and the destruction of the second Temple were, possibly, one of the most pathetic periods in Jewish history. We were constantly under military aggression and constantly paying tribute to foreign powers. Additionally, that dark period was scarred by endless internecine struggle, as Jewish society splintered into multiple warring factions. Our regained sovereignty was hollowed out by civil war and, eventually, the second Temple caved in on itself.
Evidently, whenever, Jews achieve autonomy and enjoy self-rule we celebrate and we recite Hallel– regardless of the caliber of leadership Imagine the scene every erev Yom Kippur. The High priest was summoned by Sanhedrin, and forced to swear that he would not short-circuit the sacred ceremonies of Yom Kippur. More often than not the High priest was a Saducee-sympathizer and would intentionally torpedo these ceremonies. Both the High Priest and the Sanhedrin committee shed unhappy tears at the woeful situation in which such incredulous doubts had to be considered. Finally, after two hundred years of strife and social disunity, the Romans marched into Jerusalem, burnt it to the ground, razed the land and renamed the city Aelia Capitolina. The miracle of Chanukah has absolutely no long lasting political impact. It is a blip on the radar of history. What sovereignty, exactly, are we celebrating? Evidently, whenever, Jews achieve autonomy and enjoy self-rule we celebrate and we recite Hallel– regardless of the caliber of leadership and independent of the texture of that sovereignty. It is specifically the imperfect nature of the post-Chanukah sovereignty which makes it so relevant and so contemporary. How long have Jews endured persecution, yearning for the day we could live under Jewish rule in a Jewish state? For how many cold Decembers did defenseless Jews endure the inevitable Christmas-time pogroms? How often did we dream of a Jewish army or police force for protection against interminable hostilities? How many centuries did we dream of Jewish government and of carving a
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
society based upon Jewish values? It has now been restored to us and we celebrate our fate, despite our imperfect leadership and despite our incomplete sovereignty. It is the specifically the flawed nature of the post-Chanukah sovereignty which makes it so relevant! Chanukah demands that we appreciate and celebrate any form of Jewish sovereignty. Thousands of year ago, as the Jews were about to embark upon a long and dark exile, Hashem offered us one last taste of Jewish sovereignty, so that we would recognize it when it was ultimately restored to us. He reminded us that Jews are meant to self-govern rather than subject to the laws of others. He reminded us that Jews were meant to live securely in their land rather than be precariously hosted across in foreign lands. He reminded us of that Jews were meant to defend their security rather than be vulnerable to the aggression of their many enemies. Sovereignty has finally been restored. Chanukah has once again been renewed. We hope for more, but we rejoice for what has been already achieved. We know what sovereignty tastes like. For centuries Chanukah `kept that taste alive. MACCABEES
What weird and wonderful theories people have. A Jew from Glasgow told me in all seriousness that Judah the Maccabee was a Scotsman, like Macbeth and MacDonald. A Cheder teacher even summoned up the ingenuity to link the Maccabees with the Biblical cave of Machpelah… The word Maccabee is not found in the Bible or Talmud; It derives from Greek and comes in the Apocrypha, where I Macc. 2:14 and II Macc. 2:19 refer to “Judah known as Maccabeus”. The sages are often reluctant to admit that a word has a foreign origin; they suggest that Maccabee is the initial letters of a Biblical verse (Ex. 18:11) or comes from a Hebrew root that means “to extinguish”. There is a theory that it is from Makevet, a hammer, because “hammer” is a metaphor for a strong leader. Aaron Kaminka thinks that the name is a corruption of Machbanai, who was one of David’s warriors and embodied lion-like strength, speed and valour (I Chron. 12:13). It is not certain that Judah called himself Maccabee; he is more likely to have been simply Yehudah ben Mattityahu. The rabbis preferred to call Judah’s group “Hasmoneans”, from the town of Chashmon (Josh. 15:27).

ADAM & THE 8-DAY FESTIVAL
Adam had his own Chanukah at the beginning of human history. According to the Talmud he noticed that the days were getting shorter and darker and he thought it was his fault because he had eaten forbidden fruit, so he fasted and prayed for eight days in repentance for his sin. When he saw that the days were getting longer and brighter he rejoiced and celebrated by means of an eight-day festival. In later generations, heathens followed but grossly distorted Adam’s festival and turned it into a mid-winter time of idolatry and paganism. In later generations, the sages realised and were shocked at what the heathens were doing and ensured that the winter celebration was dedicated to God and to genuine spirituality.
THE SEVEN CHANUKAHS
When as small children we asked what the name “Chanukah” meant, we were told it meant “Dedication”, for after recapturing the Temple from the heathen enemy the Maccabees put it in order and rededicated it to its sacred purposes. The sages surely thought hard and long before fixing on the name “Chanukah”. They must have discarded a number of alternatives, finally choosing the name used from the dawn of Jewish history to
denote a feast of dedication. The Midrash says there are seven Chanukahs: 1. The Chanukah of the creation of the world, when God completed His work and launched man on the arena of history. 2. The Chanukah of the Tabernacle in the time of Moses, when the princes of the tribes brought offerings to the Sanctuary. 3. The Chanukah of the First Temple, erected and dedicated by Solomon. 4. The Chanukah of the Second Temple, erected by exiles who had returned from Babylon. 5. The Chanukah of the wall of Jerusalem, completed in the days of Nehemiah. 6. The Chanukah celebrated by the Maccabees. 7. And the Chanukah of the time to come, when the world will be illumined more brightly than on all the Chanukahs of ages past. Each of the first six Chanukahs has a symbolic meaning, particularly relevant for an age when principles are discarded and values devalued. The Chanukah of creation tells man that, God-like, he should devote his energies to constructive ends. The Chanukah of the Tabernacle suggests that, like the princes of the tribes, man should bring his best to every worthwhile cause.

The Chanukah of the First Temple declares, “Set aside time and place for worship, joining heaven to earth as your prayer ascends upwards.” The Chanukah of the Second Temple, built by returned exiles, tells man to work for the day when all men will be free and none shall be subject to harassment or hatred. The Chanukah of the wall of Jerusalem, which gave security to the City of God, shows man how to find anchorage in time of fear and uncertainty: “Find protection,” it says, “in the encompassing Providence of God!” The Chanukah of the Maccabees, possible because the few stood up against the many, assures man that he need not be afraid to stand up and go it alone against the negative tendencies of the age. The culminating Chanukah, when the messianic end of days will dawn, is one which we can begin to build now, without delay. The first step in building it is to learn to live at peace with yourself. The second is to learn to live at peace with your fellow. The Messianic Chanukah will arrive when we succeed in making the earth a temple of peace. This is what we pray for in Ma’oz Tzur – the day “when You will cause all slaughter to cease,” and man “shall complete with song and psalm the dedication of the altar”.

Chanukah oil BY DENISE PHILLIPS
A delicious latke recipe for Chanukah from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com
It is a tradition at Chanukah time to eat oily foods as part of our celebration of this fun festival. Olive oil is the best oil to use, not only is it the Torah’s oil of choice for kindling the Chanukah lights, but it is also one of the seven types of agricultural foods for which the Holy Land is praised. Although the olive may seem to be just a small and undistinguished fruit, its outer appearance is misleading. There is so much more to the olive than meets the eye. Inside this tiny fruit is enough oil to light an entire room and it is this oil, from just a few olives, that was used to light the Menorah in the Holy Temple, and that was behind the miracle of Chanukah. At this time of year the olives on the trees are late in their season and are starting to darken from green to black. This is ideal, because it is the black olives that contain the most oil. The blacker the olive, the more light it contains. There is a Chassidic teaching that the Hebrew word for oil, hashemen has the same Hebrew letters as neshamah, “soul.” The oil is the hidden essence of the olive; the soul is the hidden essence of man. There
are various grades of culinary olive oil each with their own levels of acidity and variations in taste and purpose. Extra virgin olive oil is the oil from the first press. It is the least processed form of olive oil and has only 1% acidity and the highest levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. It also has the richest, deepest flavour but as it does not have a high burning point it is not ideal for cooking. It is best used for salads and other cold dishes, or drizzled over hot dishes just before serving, so the rich flavour can be fully enjoyed. Ideal on traditional Greek salads, spinach, avocado and asparagus salads, Italian bread salad or hot dishes like Tuscan bean soup, a trio of tomato risotto, tuna steaks with Sicilian sauce or ratatouille lasagna. Virgin olive oil is from the second pressing and is used in for more mainstream purposes such as stir frying, and roasting vegetables. Pure olive oil is perhaps a bit misleading because it comes from the final pressings, when they extract every last drop out of the olive, and it is usually filtered and refined. This oil is quite resistant to heat and does not oxidize or go rancid during cooking. Not only is it an excellent cooking oil but one of the healthiest. On a health note, olive oil has a
25 NOVEMBER 2021
high content of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants, which fight heart disease, ulcers, and gastroenteritis. If your Chanukah is incomplete without a latke or doughnut, take comfort from the fact that deep-fried food absorbs less fat than shallow-fried and you can limit fat absorption by making sure your frying oil is hot. If the oil is too cool, food takes longer to cook and it absorbs more oil and ends up greasy. So test the oil temperature with a thermometer – aim for 180C to 190C - or by frying a cube of bread before you cook. If the bread browns in 60 seconds the oil temperature will be about 185C and perfect for latkes. The oil will cool when you put your food in, so limit how much you cook in each batch and give it time to get back up to heat before the next batch goes in. If you do deep-fry follow these top tips for safety: • Use a splatter screen. • Do not overheat the oil – if it smokes turn off the heat. • Keep a pan lid nearby in case of fire. • Leave at least 4 cm at the top of the pan to prevent oil overflowing. • Pat wet food dry to avoid spitting. • Always drain on a rack and not absorbent paper. Here is a latkes recipe which I hope you will enjoy. Wishing all my readers a very happy Chanukah Best dishes! Denise www.jewishcookery.com
Za’atar Carrot Spiced Baked Latkas The story of Chanukah connects its culinary link with oily food, but for a healthier option, I have baked these latkas instead of fried them. This is definitely a twist on a traditional favourite but adds flavour, colour and crunch to the final recipe. The secret is to cook them at a high temperature so that the ingredients go crispy without burning! Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Makes: 20
Ingredients 350g carrots -peeled and coarsely grate 150g potatoes – peeled and coarsely grate 1 onion -peeled roughly chopped and coarsely grate 1 tablespoon corn flour 100g chickpea flour (gram flour or besan) 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 tablespoon za’atar powder 1 tablespoon harissa powder 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon salt 1 egg Method 1. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F 2. Using the grater section to your food processor or by hand, coarsely grate the carrots, potatoes and onions. 3. Squeeze out any excess liquid with a clean tea cloth. 4. Transfer to a bowl, add the corn flour, chickpea flour, baking powder, za’atar, harissa powder, smoked paprika, salt and egg.
5. Mix well so that the spices and evenly distributed. 6. Take about 1 large tablespoon of mixture, flatten it and place on a tray lined with baking parchment paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect; those crispy edges are the best! 7. Bake for about 20 minutes, then flip over and bake for 10 more minutes. Serve with your apple sauce, sour cream or tahini dressing.

25,000 volunteers perform good deeds on Mitzvah Day 42 COMMUNITY
BY DAVID SAFFER Politicians joined community leaders and volunteers to mark Mitzvah Day. Over 25,000 volunteers around the UK, and 40,000 globally, performed good deeds to strengthen communities across the UK. Some 500 places of worship, schools, offices and other organisations took part. Over 30 other countries also participated. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Labour Party leader Keir Starmer and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon along with Rabbis, Imams and Bishops backed the faith-based day of social action. “Mitzvah Day is a wonderful tradition,” Johnson noted. “I am filled with so much pride to see the thousands of volunteers who every year donate their time to do something positive for their communities.” He added, “Mitzvah Day encourages people from all faiths and backgrounds to come together. This Jewish-led day is an excellent example of the generosity and good spirit of the British public.” Starmer joined South Hampstead Synagogue for a litter pick and collection of non-perishable food and toiletries for Camden’s homeless. He said, “Mitzvah Day is special for many reasons, but I am always struck by the way that it brings people from different faith communities together to give their time to help others.” Sturgeon added, “Our faith and belief communities achieve great things when they work and act together. Today, people with a variety of different beliefs and

backgrounds came together in a united effort to support their communities. By donating time rather than money, those taking part make a difference to the projects they support whilst also building and strengthening relationships with different faith backgrounds.” Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis commented, “Mitzvah Day provides a special opportunity to give selflessly to others. One of the best examples of this is the planting of trees, from which future generations will significantly benefit.” Among scores of events communally Norwood ran a virtual cooking session over Zoom. On the menu were latkes for Chanukah that were baked, collected and delivered to Sufra NW foodbank. The final products were delivered with a leaflet explaining the festival of Chanukah and its customs. Volunteers also used Mitzvah Day to raise funds for Children in Need. Members of Young Norwood Connect Committee entertained people at adult residential services. And volunteers painted specially designed Jewish-festival themed murals that will grace the walls of Norwood’s Kennedy Leigh Children & Families Centre. The 20th Finchley Jewish Scout group and Alei Tzion Synagogue joined forces at the Library garden for Kisharon. Youngsters planted crocuses to
represent polio with bulbs donated by Rotary. The group also planted flowering plants and helped paint a fence in the garden to create a colourful space. Neha Dhakar, Kisharon Social Enterprise manager commented, “The children did a fantastic job despite the freezing weather. It was the coldest day of the winter yet they all had smiles on their faces ready to help us.” Camp Simcha held a Blood Drive with the Joely Bear Appeal at Edgware Blood Centre. The volunteers heard from inspiring guest speakers who shared their moving accounts of their hospital experiences and learnt about the fantastic work Camp Simcha does.

Yuval is on a mission for a healthy lifestyle
Prof. Yuval Heled, Scientist
BY DAVID SAFFER Professor Yuval Heled is a scientist on a mission as Cannabotech leads the way in the next generation of preventive care products. The cutting edge biomedical company have justifiably earned the title ‘The Botanical Pharmacy’ as they apply the untapped benefits of cannabinoids and functional mushrooms to today’s health issues. Fusing traditional Asian knowledge with modern science a plethora of
products have been specifically designed to help consumers take control of health concerns including stress, sleep, immunity, skin conditions together with muscle and joint fatigue associated with a modern lifestyle. Extensive cannabidiol (CBD) and mushroom research has advanced Cannabothech’s scientific knowledge in the industry enabling them to continuously improve products. Prof. Heled is an esteemed scientist, consultant and lecturer. A renowned scientist, he is an expert in clinical, exercise and environmental physiology. A former IDF Medical Corps chief physiologist and director of the Heller Institute of Medical Research, Israel, Prof Heled has held numerous academic posts round the world. Head of a Masters degree programme in physical activity and health promotion at the Kibbutzim College, Tel Aviv, he is a scientific consultant in the anti-aging industry. Recognised in integrative physiology, the study of metabolic processes and disease prevention, Prof Heled is a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He gained a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science at the Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University and a Bachelor of Education at Wingate Institute.
The Cannobatech management approached Prof Heled soon after they established the company to create an integrative group. He recalled, “They specialised in mushrooms, cannabis and CBD, and molecular biology but they needed a scientist with an integrative view to combine the company’s main approach to deal with preventative health and preventative medicine. My experience during 25-30 years of research into human physiology was to optimise human performance, that includes the full spectrum from being healthy to survival in extreme conditions. My experience included exercise, survival, sleep, nutrition, altitude and supplements.

“I assisted then in moving forward their formulas and approach to educate people in preventative medicine to boost both the mental and immune system.” Prof Heled added, “The endocannabinoid system, even in the medical community is an interesting system of the body. The company with technological support wanted to develop an application including a face scan. It’s in smart form. The technology is Transdermal optical imaging and we added an algorithm. Using vital signs such as heart and respiratory rate we measure someone’s physiological status. We then assist and educate in lifestyle changes. We show what formulas can help to strengthen weak aspects like sleep, stress or skin problems.” Prof Heled continued, “Cannbatech is not a cannabis company, it’s a biotech company, our interest is promoting health, resilience and embedding new functions. This company has an integrative, pioneering approach. Chronic diseases are getting worse but technology is improving all the time yet we lead more sedentary lifestyles. We eat processed foods, we are more stressed and our community life can be worse. It is very difficult to convince people to change behaviour. “In the western world, in

WITH THE WINTER SEASON STARTING CANNOBATECH HAVE IMMUNITY PRODUCTS AVAILABLE. * Immunity Drop * Immunity food supplement * Immunity Dual System (Bundle of Drops + Food supplement) As part of Cannabotech holistic and integrative approach to preventive care and your health-being, all products are based on the ground-breaking M²CBD formula that simultaneously targets the immune system (through a blend of functional mushrooms) and the endocannabinoid system (through a premium pharmaceutical-grade CBD). The simultaneous targeting of both systems creates a supercharged, 1+1=10 effect on your health.
England, even in Israel, only around 20 to 25 percent of the population perform physical activity the way my expert friends and I recommend. In children it is around 10 percent. Some 30 to 40 percent of the population is overweight, they are eating processed foods, have high blood pressure yet we live longer and that creates a paradox. For cultural, behavioral and economic reasons it’s difficult to cope with our recommendations. That is why by having a novel scientific based approach we can assist the population in boosting immunity using materials from plants, from CBD. “With cannabis there are cannabinoids that have a very significant health benefit for preventive medicine. “And if you add to that mushrooms, for thousands of years we know there are
Cannabotech’s Immunity drops & food supplement contains a unique blend of reishi, cordyceps, enokitake, and shitake to help strengthen your immune system and a premium pharmaceutical-grade, isolated CBD that contributes to a balanced immune system via the endocannabinoid system. benefits. It is not a medicine but as basic nutrition its healthy. “We want to educate the population, give advice and follow up using this application. We measure vital signs every few days, weeks and months. And we can see a change. But we do not recommend everyone to take everything. It’s tailored. I sincerely believe that we should and can assist the population. “From our questionnaire we learn about people and by having DNA results we can assist in choosing a better way to live, changing a lifestyle with support. We give formulations to assist preventive diseases while maintaining immune function.” Cannobatech products may help alleviate chronic diseases, aside from exercising and nutrition guidance, but they are clear that people on medication
must seek medical advice. “This is very important, when I trained in medicine the first thing we were taught was not to harm the patient,” explained Prof Heled. “People diagnosed with chronic diseases taking daily medication must consult physicians or a nutritionist to assist them, before starting any supplements. Although we don’t think there will be issues some may react with ingredients of a mushroom or CBD. “However, if physiological parameters are not diagnosed as a disease, so blood pressure may be a bit high, you are a bit stressed, a bit overweight and you don’t take medication then changing your life style and using evidenced based products proven to be safe for release can have a positive effect. If anyone is unsure though then check with a physician.” Cannobatech opened a few weeks ago at Westfield Shopping Centre, how has it been received globally? “We have a few months experience so will know more over the coming year,” explained Prof Heled. “England was the first shop we opened and there are other countries that understand the significance and positive influence of CBD. We are in the first stages and hopefully in the future these products will assist, it’s a tool in your tool box to assist, to promote health and prevent diseases, to strengthen the immune function and also create a lifestyle approach of physical activity with less stress and so on.” In your medical career is working with Cannobatech one of the most exciting

organisations you have been involved in? “I’m a scientist, not a physician, this is definitely the first integrative approach that I’ve been involved with and that’s why I joined the company,” he said. “As an expert, I get a lot of projects to consider. With this company, its evidence based. CBD is interesting then there is mushrooms, DNA and lifestyle changes. This integrative approach is my approach to health and preventive health. We want to help prevent diseases, getting healthy materials from nature can change lifestyles and assist a population be more aware of health.” Cannabotech complies with local laws for CBD hemp extract. And they adhere to Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association and Medicines and Food Standards Agency standards in addition to EU regulations. All products are recommended to best manufacturing practice and international standards.

Working together to promote health and wellbeing for people with physical disabilities and/ or vision impairments Jewish Blind & Disabled and Maccabi GB have joined forces to deliver a programme of accessible sports for tenants living at Jewish Blind & Disabled developments. During lockdown, tenants’ health and wellbeing was a key focus of Jewish Blind & Disabled’s Zoom programme. From exercise classes, mindfulness, relaxation, pilates and yoga to name a few, tenants had the opportunity to get involved from the comfort of their own flat. As these all proved to be popular and now classes and activities can happen in person again, JBD have been looking at different ways to promote health and wellbeing activities within their developments. Clive Geller, a Jewish Blind & Disabled Tenant and a Vice President of Maccabi GB and Former Chairman was always keen to see a closer partnership between the two organisations. He commented: “I am very pleased to see that the relationship between Maccabi GB and JBD is beginning to move forward and

that accessible sports and wellbeing activities are starting to take place. I hope that the future will be bright for both of our organisations and await with interest to seeing how the programme develops.” A consultation exercise took place with Maccabi GB and tenants at JBD to establish what sports people would be interested in and what they used to enjoy but felt they could no longer access it. The trial pilot, a five-week programme of accessible golf, was launched at two of the developments. The programme is suitable for any tenants that wish to join of any age and no matter what their disability is. Tenants at two developments participated in the accessible golf and there was positive feedback all round. Malcolm said: “I used to play golf and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play again. It was something different and lovely to see people enjoying themselves no matter how good or bad they were at golf.” Diane said: “I have never played golf

Ashley Lerner, Chief Executive from Maccabi GB commented: ‘It’s great to be working together with Jewish Blind & Disabled on this important project. We have each recognised the importance of promoting health and wellbeing and making it accessible to anyone and I look forward to watching this partnership grow’. Simone Mazin, Jewish Blind & Disabled’s Community Engagement Manager said; “By working in partnership with Maccabi GB I hope we can introduce accessible sports and wellbeing activities that are an opportunity for tenants to take part in activities that many assume they can no longer do. It has been great to see tenants get so involved and enjoy the accessible golf and I look forward to seeing how the programme develops.”

From the front line… Chesed is priceless, costing nothing other than your heart. BY JACQUELINE CURZON They say ‘a fool and his money are soon parted,’ a mantra most often seen in divorce cases, but I found a recent, hard-tobeat example. Caroline and Paul Crowther, both in their 50s and who had been married for 25 years, ran a shipping business and were arguing over assets, these cumulatively worth less than £1.4 million. Mr Justice Peel commented that the ‘only beneficiaries of their nihilistic litigation had been the high-quality lawyers,’ after the Crowthers ran up lawyer’s bills of £2.3 million. One must ask, what was the point of it? I recently came upon a sizable list of words and phrases, which apparently I could use at the tender age of 18 months. I was very touched that my mother had taken the time to make this list, but of course this was in the era of Listen With Mother, followed naturally by Watch with Mother when a black and white television was eventually within their budget. The radio I vaguely still remember, sitting in pride of place in our living room. These learning experiences were swiftly followed by the cutting up of cereal boxes into little squares, whereupon mother would use the reverse side of the card to write letters of the alphabet, and I would sit on the floor making up words. Forget flash cards - she was light years ahead of her time, so small wonder I followed happily into her fascinating world of language, with its attraction and mystery of sounds and description. With a tinge of reservation, I admit to enjoying perusing dictionaries to great delight. Scientists have recently launched a quest for the cleverest breed of canine. As the loving owner of several border collies throughout my childhood and youth, I can testify to their innate intelligence, and this merely in a domestic setting. Never mind barking to round up a hillside full of intellectually stunted sheep, a border collie can understand up to 1,000 words, identify hundreds of objects, and intuitively pick up on nuance of tone and subtlety of gesture. Small wonder the border collie is ranked top of the premier canine league. As a small child I’m sure the family collie had an infinite repertoire and understanding of words, superior to that of most young children. In another dimension they would be elected to the Westminster upper chamber, and doubtless make more intelligent contributions than some of our aged part-time attendees. But a recent story focussed on an altogether different aspect of pet ownership. Callum Jones (27) from Maes Pinwydd, Deeside, was crossing a bridge in Loggerheads Country Park, whilst walking his dog. He fell and sprained his ankle, and when he began to feel unwell two weeks later, was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital. Callum was found to have a pulmonary

embolism, then unbelievably, suffered a cardiac arrest and died. Covid is still hitting headlines, although in the UK, life is just about returning to normal. Anti-vaxxers are however an extremely vocal group who need to take a good hard look at themselves. They are against the covid vaccine - fair enough perhaps - but I'll put money on them having been jabbed against polio, measles, mumps, rubella and a host of other nasties. Should there ever be an anti-cancer jab, I bet they'd sign up in a heartbeat, so what is intrinsically wrong with protecting yourself against covid? Cases across Europe are spiralling out of control and one of the factors must surely be the lack of vaccine uptake there versus the roll out here in the UK. The death rate amongst the 20% of anti-vaxxers here in the UK is equal to the death rate of the 80% who are vaccinated, but more concerning is that those in the 20% are selfishly putting the rest of us at increased risk. You can't have it both ways. Austria is the first to provoke a major backlash since its government made vaccination compulsory, and was followed with some extremely violent protests, but ask yourself - what choice do countries have with ever rising numbers of positive cases? Europe had last week reached an all-time high in infections, with 310,000 cases reported on one day alone. Alexander Schallenberg, the Austrian Chancellor, announced that the entire country would go into lockdown, whilst unvaccinated nationals were extremely put out to be confined to barracks (home). Only a handful of countries have pushed through compulsory vaccination, including Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Indonesia, but whether they - or any others - can follow through on this remains to be seen, as compliance and uptake obviously rely on supplies of vaccines. This connects neatly with the topic of distancing and mask wearing. Now remember the 2m rule was never that, but a recommendation. They could just as
easily have chosen 1.5 or 3 m, but it would still remain a recommendation. Tell that to those who gleefully stuck tape to shop floors, pavements and so forth, and to the obsessively observant who shouted abuse at you for daring to step over the line by an inch. I am relieved to see masks on the wane, as this was also supposed to be a temporary measure. There is nothing to say it should continue in perpetuity, indeed that would be an awful vision. Imagine Bob and Julie's wedding pics, with all the guests in designer masks. Little Josh's first school play, with children spaced out as if ready for a game of What's the time, Mr Wolf, streamed on Zoom because you can't be too careful with these naughty parents. It is then somewhat a relief to see members of government declining mask adornment, assuming they're in the group which has been double or triple jabbed. Please let's get a grip and continue to work towards restoring normality. Now, the fiasco over asylum seeking immigrants has reached new heights. Despite the UK paying our not-so-neighbourly cousin France, an exorbitant amount to help quash the rising tide coming from Eastern Europe, Sudan and African countries, President Macron, in typical belligerent style, has cried foul, and steadfastly refused to return boat travellers on the high seas to their port of origin, thereby showing active encouragement for any who dare to try independently - or pay to be smuggled - to gain access to the island we call home. We are also seeing huge numbers being shuttled from Africa to the borders of Poland by Lukashenko, and likely closer to home, in an attempt to engineer a social crisis. Numbers reaching the UK are rising exponentially on a daily basis, such that one would wonder if France is giving incentives for people to make the hazardous journey. The residents of Dover have got gripes of their own. Last week a well known pizza chain closed to the public after Border Control ordered 700 pizzas to feed migrants who had made the crossing. That was just for one day….. Now I’m hardly going to suggest we starve anyone, but really? I suppose a daily pizza bill of £7,000 is small change, when compared to the failed asylum system which costs £1 billion a year. In 2013 almost 47,000 asylum seekers (and criminals) were deported, versus 8,000 last year. The arrivals side of the scoreboard is going to soon run out of numbers: Arrivals : 30,000 | Departures: 3 ….. and so on. As Allison Pearson writes [Telegraph, 24 Nov], veterans who have fought for our country, end up suffering from PTSD, often end up sleeping on the streets and having to rely on charity and food kitchens. I also struggle to believe that South Americans who made it over the US border are given a hotel room, or state-funded accommodation and food from local restaurants. That’s a separate story from the severely impoverished
members of our own community who live many miles below the breadline, relying on charity and the magnanimity of our great and good. Perhaps in the approaching season of goodwill, that sounds too Scroogelike, but I think the government has lost the plot. Priti Patel is discussing repatriation of immigrants to turn the tide on notions of British benevolence, however the conflicting message from Border Force is one of comfort and joy. Of the 25,000 asylum seekers to make the crossing this year, which is a 300% rise on 2020, only FIVE people have been sent back. So, assuming they’re here for good, that’s around 25,000 extra people a year putting pressure on the struggling state systems, and will likely keep rising. It’s not laughable, it’s condemnable. Boris needs to shore up our borders (sea and land) and remember who put him in office, and who provides the chips and the public pizza. Never mind the Red Wall, or the Trumpian Mexico Wall, let’s drain the channel and build a fortress around mainland Britain, at least as far as Gretna. Ms Sturgeon can then have the French re-route the travellers across the North Sea in one of her never-used ferries, and house them in her ‘fair and green land.’ She has the space, will enjoy the attention and gain additional votes for her party. It’s a win-win arrangement, although they may not take so readily to haggis, neeps and tatties. And now to finish with a truly heartwarming story. Readers may recall I mentioned several years back my beloved father dying from the awful MND (motor neurone disease), a life sapping miserable condition which strikes down the unsuspecting in short order. Kevin Sinfield (41), Rugby league legend has just completed an eye-watering physical challenge to raise funds for his friend and colleague Rob Burrow, who was diagnosed with MND in 2019. Sinfield has just completed a run of 101 miles in 24 hours, raising more than £1million for the charity. He began his epic journey at Welford Road, Leicester and ended at Headingley, the home of rugby league club Leeds Rhinos, where he played for 18 years. Last year he raised £2.7 million by running seven marathons in seven days, and was awarded OBE in June 2021 for fundraising and services to rugby league. Never mind those individuals who are 'gong-ed' for simply doing their jobs, which is often a political point scoring exercise, I think for this extremely noble act of chesed, Sinfield should be knighted at the next opportunity. We did it for 100 laps of Tom Moore’s garden, we can certainly do it for 100 miles of selfless, relentless pavement pounding. You are indeed a hero, Kevin! We wish you a full recovery and a well deserved rest. Love Jacqueline x

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com HOW MANY MENORAHS?
Dear Rabbi Is it permissible to light some extra menorahs on Chanukah? I have some extra menorahs for guests. On occasion, the guests bring their own menorahs. So after we have all finished with the brachot, and the lighting, and singing, I light the extra menorahs. No brachot, of course. Is there any reason why I should not do this? Jake Dear Jake Is there any reason why you should do this? I’m not sure why you don’t have the guests each light their own and recite the blessings along with you? Lighting the extra menorahs is no big deal as such, and like all public menorahs, helps to spread the message of the miracle, but not when they are all contained within the same room as the main one, for all the same people to see.
IS IT IDEAL TO CONVERT?
Dear Rabbi What are some ideal reasons for someone to convert to Judaism? Sandra Dear Sandra There are no ideal reasons to convert to Judaism whatsoever. Frankly, unless your soul impels you do so, you’d have to be a little of kilter to want to assume all those obligations. But there are a number of ideal reasons to find happiness and fulfilment in who you are and what you are. Start with the fact that there was no one ever like you before in this world, and there will never be anyone like you. Otherwise,
you would be superfluous to existence and would never have come into being. So go out there, seek your purpose in humanity, exploit every opportunity as it presents itself and make your mark in your slice of the world.
IS GIFT GIVING JEWISH?
Dear Rabbi Is there are real significance in giving gifts to our kids on Chanukah? I think the whole ritual is over-inflated and to my mind, is just copying other people who are big on giving gifts at this time of year. It’s not that I can’t afford it. It’s that I don’t agree with it. Yakov Dear Yakov I get asked this question often enough. Let me give you some perspective. One of the famous rituals associated with Chanukah is that of gift giving. To be sure, the original tradition was that of giving Chanukah “gelt” or money. The exact origin of this custom is uncertain, but it is still practiced and certainly cherished, particularly by the recipients. The significance of this custom relates to the fact that the real battle of Chanukah was a cultural one. The Greeks sought to assimilate us and inculcate us with Greek culture and philosophy. They sought to enforce Hellenism at the expense of Jewish ideals and education. Those that were most under threat were the Jewish children. It was they, more than any other, whom the Greeks wanted to influence with all sorts of alien ideas. Hence they banned all means of Jewish education. A little known fact is that in
Pirkei Avot
– “however much we are watching our children to see what they are doing with their lives – make no mistake about it – they are watching us to see what we are doing with ours!” Two sisters were spending their Chanukah weekend at their Grandparents. At bedtime, they’re lying on their beds reciting their bedtime prayers. Suddenly the littler sister starts to pray at the top of her lungs: “I pray for a new Barbie Doll House,” “I pray for a new Nintendo, I pray for a new iPhone.” The older sister looks to her: “Why are you shouting like that? G-d isn’t deaf you know!” “I know,”
ten people sit together and occupy themselves with Torah, the Shechinah abides among them, as it is said: “Hashem stands in the congregation of G-d” (Psalm 82:1). How do we know that the same is true even of five? As it is said: “This band of His He has established on earth” (Amos 9:6). How do we know that the same is true even of three? As it is said: “In the midst of the judges He judges” (Psalm 82:1) How do we know that the same is true even of two? As it is said: “Then they that fear the Lord spoke one with another, and the L-rd hearkened, and heard” (Malachi 3:16). How do we know that the same is true even of one? As it is said: “In
she replies, “but Grandma’ is!” Everyone has their own idea of what they want for their kids in life but in our perpetual search and yearning for nachas – that Jewish word with no appropriate English translation – we must not go deaf to the calling of our 21st century and that is to ensure that children receive a sound Jewish education which will fortify them to find their own inner strength such that they will be able to navigate the challenges of life and grow to be real sources of pride and beacons of light, as productive and proud Jews out in the world.

Indeed, Chanukah contains the root word Chinuch which means education. We look to encourage our kids today to study their ancient traditions and incentivise them with Chanukah money, or, as a substitute for Chanukah money we give them gifts. Maimonides discusses the importance of using incentives and prizes until a child is old enough to understand the importance and beauty of Jewish values and rituals and that’s what we do. Indeed, just as Chanukah is the festival of lights – each beautiful child represents a ray light in the way that they bring illumination into our homes and literally light up our lives. A flame flickers, sometimes wanes when exposed to the elements of the outside world, but with each passing day of Chanukah we add yet another candle demonstrating the necessity to never complacent and our need to always seek to increase the education and knowledge of our children stimulating them with the rich spiritual splendour that Judaism has to offer. And let us remember that the Chanukah lights are kindled by the Shamash – the central candle. We, as parents, are that Shamash. We are the central candle responsible for kindling the flames – and we do so by way of our own example, because - always remember this

Rabbi Channina ben Dosa shows us through various pesukim how Hashem loves the Jewish nation so much, that He will always be with them, whether they learn Torah with a minyan or even on their own. Of course, it is better to learn amongst many, whether in a shiur setting, Yeshiva or Kollel. However, on one’s own is still great, if one has the proper training. “I’ll Be Watching You…” BY RABBI STEWART WEISS At any given moment, many – if not most – of us may be thinking, “How will I get through this latest crisis?” It may be the political chaos which is troubling us, or financial worries like the slide of the dollar, or the seemingly endless conflict(s) on our borders. Whatever the problem may be, there are times when we seem to reach the limit of our mortal powers, and we look to the sky for help. There is a strange incident which occurs in this week’s Sedra. Yosef is sent by his father Ya’akov to seek out his brothers in Shechem. But when he gets there, Yosef learns that the brothers have already left. At that point an unidentified man finds Yosef wandering about and asks him, “What are you looking for?” “I seek my brothers,” says Yosef. “They have already left here,” says the man, “I heard them say, ‘We are going to
Dotan.’” The ensuing saga of Yosef – his sale and subsequent descent into Egypt, his eventual reunion and reconciliation with his family, their sojourn in Egypt and the first geula (redemption) – might never have come to pass but for the serendipitous intervention of this mysterious stranger! Who was he? Rashi identifies him as Gavriel, one of Hashem’s four primary angels, often sent on special missions to aid humanity. But Gavriel is not the only secret sharer in our long history. The Tanach – and all of Jewish literature – is jam-packed with incidents of perfect strangers suddenly appearing out of nowhere to save the day. Whether it is Charvona in the Purim Megillah, who pops up to tell the king that a gallows just happens to be handy on which to hang Haman; or Eliyahu HaNavi, who shows up at the perfect moment, in various guises, to save a life or to make a

Minyan; or the individual angels many of us have encountered in our own lives, who have helped us along the way. This is what I call the G-d Factor. When all seems lost, and we’ve seemingly run out of options, Hashem is there for us. He may not necessarily show Himself directly or perform an outright miracle, but “harbey shluchim l’Makom,” the Almighty has many messengers at the ready to do His bidding. And so we come to Chanukah. While Al HaNissim recounts the great military victory over the Greeks, the Gemara talks exclusively about the Menorah and the oil which lasted miraculously for 8 days instead of one. It doesn’t so much as mention the amazing, against-the-odds triumph of the Maccabim. Why not? Perhaps it is because military victories, from Chanukah to the Six-Day War, can generally be explained away in strictly natural, scientific terms: We had smarter
dissuades them, advising them to throw Yosef in a pit, but not to kill him. Reuven plans to rescue Yosef and return him to his father.
3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 37:23-36
Yaakov settles in the Land of Cana’an (later Israel). Yosef brings negative reports to his father about the sons of Leah, his half-brothers (Rashi). Yaakov makes a woollen tunic for Yosef, his favourite son. Yosef’s brothers become jealous. Yosef has a dream in which all 12 brothers are binding sheaves in the field. The brothers’ sheaves gather around Yosef’s sheaf and bow to it. This increases their hatred. Yosef has another dream; the sun and moon and 11 stars bow to him. He relates this to his brothers and to Yaakov, who rebukes him.
2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 37:12-22
Yosef’s brothers shepherd Yaakov’s flock. Yaakov sends Yosef to meet them. His brothers plot to kill him. Reuven

generals, or the element of surprise, or superior weaponry, or a better esprit de corps, etc. The Menorah is meant to show us the light, to illuminate the countless hidden miracles that we experience; G-d’s Hand gloved in nature or coincidence or what some would call “luck” that continually surrounds us and guards us on the path of history. That’s why it is exclusively this facet of Chanukah that is “oil” the Talmud chooses to discuss. Living in Israel during these amazing, tumultuous times is proof positive that crises may come and go – but we are always in G-d’s glow.
Yosef’s brothers remove his tunic and throw him in the pit. They see a caravan of merchants approaching. Yehuda suggests selling Yosef to the merchants. Yosef is sold on repeatedly (Rashi), eventually arriving in Egypt. The brothers dip the tunic in the blood of a slaughtered goat and show it to Yaakov, who concludes that Yosef was killed by an animal.
4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 38:1-30
Yehuda has three sons – Er, Onan and Shela. Er marries Tamar, but is killed by G-d. Yehuda instructs Onan to marry Tamar. Onan also dies. Sometime later, Yehuda’s wife dies. Tamar disguises herself and approaches Yehuda at a crossroads. Unaware of her identity, he consorts with her, for the wage of two kid goats. He leaves her his ring, coat and staff as surety. Yehuda sends a friend to take the payment to the unidentified lady but he does not find her. Yehuda is later told that Tamar is pregnant and orders her to be burned to death. As she is taken out, she declares that the owner of the
surety is the father. Yehuda recognises the objects and admits his role. Tamar is spared and gives birth to twins, Peretz and Zerach. Point to Consider: Why did Yehuda not instruct Shela to marry Tamar after the death of Onan? (see Rashi to 38:11)
5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 39:1-6
Yosef is sold to Potiphar, the Chamberlain of the Butchers. Yosef is very successful and Potiphar places him in charge of his household.
6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 39:7-23
Potiphar’s wife tries to seduce Yosef, who rejects her advances. One day they are alone in the house. She tries again and catches his garment; he runs away. With Yosef’s garment in her hand, she summons her household, shows them his garment and accuses Yosef of attempting to seduce her. Potiphar imprisons Yosef, who earns the trust of the chief prison officer.
7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 40:1-23
Pharaoh’s baker and butler transgress against Pharaoh and are sent to the same prison as Yosef. Each one has a dream, which Yosef interprets: both will be taken out of prison in three days – the baker to be hanged and the butler to be

restored to his post. Yosef asks the butler to mention his plight to Pharaoh, but he forgets to do so.

Vayeishev: Between destiny and decisions BY GAVRIEL COHN
I’ve written this week’s piece with great apprehension, touching as it does upon what is, according to the Rambam (Maimonides), “the fundamental concept and a pillar of the Torah.” That is, free will. Yet, at least according to the Ramban (Nachmanides) – who in many ways stood as the Rambam’s philosophical counterpart, illuminating an entirely different worldview – this week’s Torah portion seems to highlight the limits of free will as well, the boundaries of this “fundamental concept.” Let me explain. Pulsating under the many episodes of this week’s sedra is the inevitable tension inbuilt in human life: this clash between our free choice, on the one hand, and our preordained destiny or the Divine plan, on the other. As the Ramban writes: “The divine decree is real… The Holy One, blessed be He, arranged Yosef to meet a guide without his knowledge in order to bring him into his brother’s hands… ‘It is the counsel of the Eternal that shall stand’” (Bereshit, 37:15). Regarding the names of Tamar’s children, the Ramban further comments that “the names bestowed upon children indicate their future.” One’s fate, it seems, is fixed. Yet one doesn’t need to study the
commentators to pick up on this theme. The verses themselves weave together a gripping story of pre-ordained destinies. No matter how surprising or twisted the path they take, Yosef; Tamar; the Butler and the Baker all seem to have an inevitable future in store for them. For some, their fate was even divinely revealed to them, prophetically projected by dreams they envisioned decades earlier. On the other hand, as we’ve said, pre-ordained fate is not the only force pulling the strings behind these stories. There is a contradictory force as well: their free will. Their actions and agency also seem to drive their futures. The brothers scheming to be rid of their brother Yosef; Reuven and Yehuda’s defiant suggestions to the other brothers, trying to stop them from murdering Yosef; Er and Onan’s deplorable acts; Tamar’s deception of Yehuda; Yehuda’s admittance that he was the owner of the belongings Tamar had kept; and Yosef’s noble fleeing from the advances of Potiphar’s wife are all free choices, often made at the very last moment and against their natural instincts. Their futures, it seems, were dictated not just by fate (the preordained prophecies and dreams)
When do we clamour to exercise our free will, and when do we utter the refrain, like Yosef, that “all that the Merciful One does, is for the good?”
Vayeishev RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE
THE COLOURED COAT
As the sidra tells us this week, Joseph wore a coat of many colours. However, not all commentators accept this as the correct translation of “ketonet passim”; Ibn Ezra thinks that “passim” is a matter of style, not colour, and it means “embroidered”, which tells us that people were envious of Joseph. In the same vein, others suggest that the word “passim” means that the coat had sleeves. It is still possible to use “passim” as an indication of colour, and to link specific colours with styles of ethical conduct, “green with envy, red with rage, yellow with cowardice” (Emanuel Levy). In a broader metaphorical sense, a person can (but should not!) be clothed in callousness, corruption and cruelty, becoming so identified with depravity that people might say, “Here comes the villain!” The best way is described in the Bible, which says that G-d is clothed in strength and majesty (Psalm 93) and an eshet chayil is clothed in dignity and elegance (Prov. 31). The ideal is summed up by the prayer which is recited when putting on the tallit in the morning, “May my soul merit to be
but by their free will; the choices they made at critical crossroads they faced. This relationship, between free will and its limits, between what is in our hands and what has been divinely preordained, is a very real tension, reflected perhaps by the two titans of medieval Jewish Philosophy themselves. In his writings, the Ramban consistently emphasises the Divine’s control over human destiny, advising man to act humbly and place his trust in G-d. The Rambam, on the other hand, starkly stresses human free will and agency, the power we have over are freely chosen lives; advocating not so much trust in G-d, but a quest for man to actively know Him (although it is, of course, more complicated). To a certain extent, perhaps there will always be this tension between G-d’s plan and our free will, between quietism and activism (a fusion of the Ramban and the Rambam, as it were). Yosef himself perhaps reflects this very tension. Despite the prophetic dreams of his youth forecasting his future, he nevertheless acts to orchestrate their fulfilment himself, exercising his free will to try and make them come true. Later,
clothed in a spiritual robe in the World to Come”.
SITTING OR SLOUCHING?
How did people conduct themselves at the meal table in ancient times? Amongst other passages, Gen. 37:25 simply says they sat to eat bread. Does this mean that they sat up straight, as my generation were taught to do as children when we were rebuked if we slouched in our chairs? Targum Onkelos says they reclined, which reminds us of the four Mah Nishtanah questions in the Haggadah. This was the Roman custom amongst the nobility of the time of the Targum, but this is not the point which the Torah is making in this verse but suggesting that Joseph’s brothers were relaxed and had no remorse about their unbrotherly treatment of Joseph.
TO HELL OR NOT?
Genesis 37:35 reports how broken up Jacob was when he thought he would never see his son Joseph again. He said he would go down to “Sh’ol” in mourning. The word “Sh’ol” occurs often in the Psalms with the meaning of the place – not necessarily a place of punishment – to which the dead descend. The Christian translator Jerome
understood the word as “inferno” or “hell”. Ibn Ezra quotes Jerome and indignantly denies that his explanation is valid. He argues that the word simply means “the grave”, a view with which Rashi agrees. Both Rashi and Ibn Ezra lived in Christian countries and were amongst the Jewish commentators who bitterly resented what they considered the distorted Christian versions of the Hebrew originals of the passages concerned. Yet the Midrash itself equates “sh’ol” with “gehinnom”. Rashi recognises this but says it is not an appropriate way of understanding the text. It must be said that though the Midrash – a massive corpus of exegetical tradition – is highly important in Judaism, it gives many views which conflict with each other and must be treated with caution. Ibn Ezra himself says in the introduction to his commentary, “yesh d’rash hefech d’rash” – “there are Midrashim which contradict one another”. In our case the verse probably means merely that if Joseph is no longer alive, life will no longer be worth living for Jacob and he will mourn until his death. In relation to the subject of heaven and hell it should be made clear that normative Judaism has problems with the idea of hell in opposition to heaven and tends to consider the real hell as not so much a separate place or state but the deprivation of heaven. It is not so much that an unrepentant sinner “goes to hell” but that he/she “does not go to heaven”.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
however, perhaps a more passive, trusting stance emerges as he recognises the Divine hand in all that he endured. He declares to his brothers, “be not distressed nor reproach yourselves for having sold me, for G-d send me ahead of you to act as a provider… Am I instead of G-d? Although you intended to harm me, G-d intended it for good, in order to keep a great nation alive.” As Yaakov makes clear on his deathbed, Yosef was guided not by his own initiative but by “the hands of the mighty Power of Jacob,” G-d. This issue, of free will versus G-d’s plan, the clash between our decisions and the destiny allocated to us, is a knotty one; certainly not solved here! Yet, perhaps that is precisely the point. Our sedra seems filled with this tension and it perhaps exists in all our lives: When do we clamour to exercise our free will, and when do we utter the refrain, like Yosef, that “all that the Merciful One does, is for the good?” Whilst we indeed have control over many of our choices and free reign over our lives; we nevertheless remain somewhat bound by our upbringing, environment, and the responsibilities we are committed to – the divine plan allocated for us, where “G-d has sent us.” Each of us “according to his own dreams and according to his interpretation.” Gavriel Cohn is an informal educator at Immanuel College, Bushey. Brothers fighting – sadly this has been the case throughout the book of Bereishis although this week we are talking about brothers who were all tzaddikim. Yaakov had made a nice coloured cloak for his son Yosef, and Yosef had dreams which upset his brothers. In the first dream the brothers all have a sheaf of straw and the sheaf’s bow down to Yosef’s sheaf. In the second dream, the sun, moons and stars all bow down to Yosef. The brothers sell Yosef as a slave and after a long journey he ends up in Potiphar’s house. He is so successful there and very popular, but Potiphar’s wife is a troublemaker and Yosef leaves. Sadly, he is put into jail.
Hashem is running this story though, like He directs all our lives, and not long after Yosef is thrown in jail, Pharaoh finds a fly in his wine! Horror of all horrors! And then he finds a stone in his bread! Wow! Both baker and butler end up in the same prison as Yosef and, after they both have disturbing dreams, they ask Yosef to explain them to him. He explains that Pharaoh will let the butler back on the job, but poor baker will not be allowed back. Indeed, three days later, its Pharaoh’s birthday and in a good mood, he places the butler back into his position, and baker is sent to his death.

“G
ood afternoon girls,” said Miss Klein, striding into the room. “This week I’d like to carry on with the theme of jealousy and gratitude that we mentioned last week. In this week’s sedra we see that Yoseph’s brothers were so jealous of him that they threw him in a pit and then sold him to passing merchants. Not only that, they then tricked Yaakov, their father, into believing that his beloved son, Yoseph, was dead. How could they do this? These were the children of Yaakov, the future heads of the shevatim (tribes) of the Bnei Yisrael! How could they make such a big mistake?” Miss Klein pointed to Liora and asked, “what do you think?” “Maybe because they were so jealous of Yoseph?” Liora answered slowly. “Exactly,” said Miss Klein. “They were jealous of Yaakov’s preferential treatment of Yoseph, especially the special coat he gave him. They were also jealous of his dreams which foretold of the brothers bowing down to Yoseph. So now please take out your workbooks and whereas last time we focused on putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes, I want you to focus on your own life. What can you be grateful for? It can be big things like family, friends and presents, or it can

be little things like food, stationary and heat. I want you to take your books home and over the next week fill out two pages of things to be thankful to Hashem for. We will then read out some of them in class.” “Two pages!” whispered Liora to Hadassa. “How on earth am I going to find that much to be thankful for.” Throughout the next few days, Hadassa
kept her eyes open for things to be grateful for. At first she only noticed new, exciting things, like her Auntie having a new baby and her grandma giving her some early chocolate Chanuka gelt for Shabbos nush. But as time went on, she started to notice the smaller things. The things that were so essential, she had never noticed them before. That her home had a roof above her head and had central

heating, so vital now that the weather was so cold outside. She started thanking Hashem when Shloime slept through the night as it meant the whole family had a better night’s sleep. She thanked Hashem for her clean clothes every morning and that reminded her to thank her Ima for doing the laundry. Which then reminded her to thank her Ima for packing her school lunch for her each morning. By the time Hadassa had handed in her two pages of things to be thankful for at the end of the week, she felt she was seeing the world in a whole new way. It was still hard sometimes when things didn’t go well, but she was working on it. So the next day when Miss Klein got up and chose Hadassa’s book to read out first to the class, Hadassa was surprised but very pleased. After Miss Klein had read it out, she looked up at the class and said “Girls, I read Hadassa’s workbook first because I can see from what she wrote that a) she has worked really hard on this, b) that she has found many things to thank Hashem for, big and small, and that c) it has also taught her to be more grateful for what the people around her do for her. This is an extra lesson that I had not even planned to teach!” Hadassa smiled as everyone clapped and she thanked Hashem that she had such a great teacher.

Vayeishev
In a nutshell Parshas Vayeishev opens with the story of brothers who could not get along. Although we must appreciate the holiness of the twelve sons of Yaakov and be aware that there was depth to their disagreements, lessons can and must be learned. Apparently, Yosef saw his brothers getting up to no-good and he would inform his father. The brothers also envied the special attention that Yosef got from their father. He was, after all, the firstborn of Rochel. One lesson is quite clear from the Pesukim – they could not speak to him. If you are upset with someone, speak it out, if not to them, to someone else. What really got them upset were the two dreams Yosef had. In the first, he sees a circle of bundles of straw bowing down to his bundle that was in the middle. In the second, he sees the sun (representing his father) moon (representing a wife of Yaakov) and the stars all bowing down to him. These dreams will be fulfilled in Parshas Mikeitz and Vayigash… One day, Yaakov sends Yosef to see how his brothers were
doing, in their shepherd duties. When he approaches, they immediately begin conspiring to take action against him. They throw the lad into the pit, then, when travellers pass by, they sell him as a slave. Problem – what to tell dad? Well, they slaughter a goat, dip his coat into its blood and say Yosef was torn by an animal. The father is heartbroken to say the least. He can’t be comforted. Yehuda marries Tamar, and thus begins the progeny of the future Davidic dynasty and eventually Moshiach ben Dovid, may we see him soon!! Yosef is taken down to Egypt, where he is sold to Potiphar. Potiphar’s wife tries to get him to sin, he escapes, and then is thrown into jail. This is no picnic – it’s some form of dark pit. He is in distinguished company though. The butler and baker have been thrown into jail due to foreign elements found in their goods provided to Pharaoh. One morning Yosef meets them and questions – why do you look depressed today? Now, honestly, for Yosef himself whose life has been one long trauma from the death of his mother to being sold

as a slave by his own brothers to ending up in an Egyptian prison, to notice other people looking depressed is quite remarkable. This teaches us that he must have been quite an upbeat fellow, ten years into his sentence. Back to the butler and baker. They reveal the cause of their distress and relate their respective dreams. Yosef tells the butler he will be reinstated as Pharaoh’s butler on the birthday, three days later. Sadly, the baker, who dreamed of birds pecking at bread on his head, is told that his end was nigh. One favour Yosef does ask from the butler though, is to remind Pharaoh of the young Hebrew imprisoned through no fault of his own. Indeed, three days later, on Pharaoh’s birthday (which, according to this author, falls on Rosh Hashana, as we are taught that is the day Yosef was released from prison exactly two years later... MAYBE…) butler is freed, baker is put to death and guess what? Butler forgets the favour Yosef did for him and forgets to mention him to Pharaoh. Best to trust G-d.

The future of science-based personalized preventative care is here. Supercharge your health-being with DNAbased personalisation. For decades, the health industry has concentrated on treating the illness, not preventing it in the first place. But we need to turn this paradigm around. Instead of waiting for things to go wrong in our bodies, we need to actively prevent poor health from happening to begin with. Often, when we think about preventing sickness, we focus on general areas like diet exercise, and possibly supplements – but there can be a lack of precision involved in the decisions we make. The My-being approach to preventative care is different. It aims to remove the ‘fuzzy thinking’ from the health-care process – including misconceptions or one-size-suitsall treatments – and replace it with specific solutions based on scientific evidence, high-end technology, and DNA-based

This enables us to personalize the programme for the solutions your body needs. The DNA test will offer insights into the functioning of your immune system, your endocannabinoid system, your metabolism, how you respond to fitness and movement, any mineral and vitamin sensitivities, and how your body reacts to certain drugs. The DNA report will also help analyse your individual responses to a range of health-being challenges – including stress and sleep, mood support, anti-aging, skin health, immune function, and healthy muscles, joints, and bones. • The My-being app | This enables you to track your progress during your journey based on a range of health parameters, and further personalize your programme over the months. Crucially, it’s designed to help you stay active, remain motivated, and not give up on the process midway.
• Monthly 1:1 session with a healthcare professional | They will accompany you throughout the whole process, offering human insights into your progress, giving extra support, and helping you make the most of your My-being journey.
• M²CBD-based personalized kit | Every month, you’ll receive a set of products, based on our unique M²CBD formula – a powerful combination of functional mushrooms (to strengthen your immune system) and pharmaceuticalgrade, isolated CBD (to target your endocannabinoid system). Each product aims to support a specific area, from mood to sleep to skin health, to help keep you on track.
