ISRAELIS BACK TRUMP BUT BIDEN IS AHEAD IN POLLS BY 10 POINTS BY DAVID SAFFER
Donald Trump trails in the polls with under three weeks to the US presidential election on November 3. The majority of political pundits have Joe Biden holding anywhere between an eight and 10-point lead. Even where polls were wrong in the last two elections Biden is ahead in most. The race to the White House depends on key battleground ‘swing’ states where the race is close. Results in Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Arizona will prove crucial and provide a winner in terms of an electoral college majority. When it comes to peace in the Middle East, Israel and the Palestinian’s have opposing views. For Israelis there is one winner and that is the incumbent President. Trump has made a number of notable moves during his term in office including the historic US Embassy move to Jerusalem and recent UAE accord. His ‘deal of a century’ has yet to come through

Lauder meets Abbas in ‘private’ meeting BY ADAM MOSES World Jewish Congress has not given up hope of an Israel-Palestinian peace deal. President Ronald Lauder held a ‘private’ meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas last weekend to discuss a “range of issues” regarding Palestine and the Middle East. WJC acknowledged the meeting in a statement as did Civil Affairs Minister Hussein al-Sheikh on Twitter but neither party gave specific details surrounding discussions. Lauder’s visit was not sanctioned by the White House administration. The Palestinians have denounced US President Donald Trump’s ‘deal of the century’. In other news, WJC has lambasted Nazi slogans being daubed at a Jewish cemetery in Athens. Greek police are investigating the hate crime. The Israeli Embassy in Greece lamented the “heinous anti-Semitic graffiti” and was a reminder of the “existence of evil”. “Nazism has no place in our democracy. Citizens regardless of religion, law enforcement and justice authorities have to be alert and make sure that the Nazi crimes against humanity will never be committed
again,” reportedly added the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece. “Anti-Semitism lays in the very root of the “absolute evil” that Nazism expresses. It starts with the Jews but never stops at them.” Greek Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias and Development and Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis slammed the incident. Education Minister Niki Kerameus expressed the government’s condemnation to the Jewish community. “The Greek Ministry of Education will persistently continue with its practices to combat anti-Semitism,” he reportedly said. WJC, meantime, has welcomed YouTube’s decision to remove the Nation of Islam channel from its platform. The channel was reportedly banned for continuing to breach the company’s hate speech policies including hosting videos by Louis Farrakhan, who has also been banned by Facebook. Lauder applauded the decision to ban the spread of hate and anti-Semitism on social media platforms. “We will continue to urge them to remove hateful individuals from their platforms,” he reportedly noted. “Freedom of expression cannot serve as a cloak to promote age-old conspiracies against Jews,

to call for the extermination of Jews, or to shamelessly tell lies about Jews or any other group. “But social media companies must also act faster and consider the harm done while this information spreads quickly before being removed. “Farrakhan’s videos were out there for too long. Damage has been done already. We urge YouTube to take stronger measures across its platform to free it from hate.”
He added, “Our safety and future is dependent upon social media companies taking hate seriously and putting an end to its dissemination on their platforms.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl welcomed WJC’s viewpoint on the social media giant. “Its removal, filled as it was with anti-Semitic and homophobic videos featuring the organisation’s leader Louis Farrakhan was long overdue,” she noted. “We commend the platform for taking action and urge it to continue to remove those who spread hate and division.” WJC, meanwhile, has mourned the death of human rights advocate Ambassador Richard Schifter, who died aged 97. Schifter, born in Austria during the Holocaust, served under President Ronald Reagan at the United Nations and as special advisor to the National Security Council in the Clinton administration among numerous diplomatic posts. Lauder described Schifter, who lost his parents during the Shoah, as a “symbol of the American dream”. “He was a brilliant yet endearingly modest man who devoted his life to serving the cause of human rights,” Lauder said. “Dick was a patriotic American, a passionate supporter of Israel and a very dear and loyal friend.”
Israel-UAE flights delayed over pandemic BY LEAH WAXLER
MOVING FORWARD AFTER REDUNDANCY
Direct flights between Israel and United Arab Emirates have been delayed until January because of the coronavirus pandemic. Following the UAE normalisation deal signed at the White House, hopes were high for routes to begin this month. But a second lockdown in Israel has scuppered those aspirations. “I feel with the Covid that we’re kind of running with our hands behind our backs,” Jerusalem’s deputy mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, co-founder of the UAE-Israel Business Council, reportedly said during a visit to Dubai. UAE carriers Emirates and Etihad, flydubai and Israir, are planning to serve the sector, she added. Dubai-based Emirates will offer kosher meals. Despite the delay, Hassan-Nahoum

welcomed the opportunities on offer. It is hoped 100-250,000 visitors will utilise the services. “I can tell you in Israel there’s such a thirst for peace and normalisation within our country, especially the UAE which is the most modern economy of the Middle East. People are really excited,” Hassan-Nahoum reportedly noted. “Covid is the only thing holding us back,” she added. “The minute a visa regime is in place, we’re talking about many, many people on both sides coming here. “There’s a real palpable excitement, not just to go on an extra holiday vacation. It’s really about this rapprochement with an Arab country that wants a warm peace.” Since the UAE deal was announced in August, El Al took a delegation to Abu Dhabi on the first commercial flight between the two nations. It was also the official flight by an Israeli carrier over Saudi Arabia.

Facebook updates hate speech policy BY LEAH WAXLER Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has updated its company’s hate speech policy to include Holocaust denial. Jewish organisations have applauded the decision. “We’ve long taken down posts that praise hate crimes or mass murder, including the Holocaust. But with rising anti-Semitism, we’re expanding our policy to prohibit any content that denies or distorts the Holocaust as well,” explained Zuckerberg. “If people search for the Holocaust on Facebook, we’ll start directing you to authoritative sources to get accurate information.” Zuckerberg added that he had struggled with the tension between standing PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA Mark Zuckerberg for free expression and the harm caused by minimising or denying the horror of the “(It) shows that the company is beginning Holocaust. to take anti-Semitic incitement on its plat“My own thinking has evolved as I’ve seen forms seriously,” noted a spokesman. “There data showing an increase in anti-Semitic is a direct line between online incitement violence, as have our wider policies on hate and threats and violence against Jews in the speech,” he explained. “Drawing the right real world.” lines between what is and isn’t acceptable The Board of Deputies commended the speech isn’t straightforward, but with the ruling as “long overdue”. current state of the world, I believe this is the Marie van der Zyl, President of the Board of right balance.” Deputies, said, “Facebook has finally acceptCampaign Against Antisemitism wel- ed what we and other organisations have recomed the policy announcement along with peatedly made clear, that Holocaust denial is Facebook’s ban on QAnon conspiracy theo- not just a form of misinformation but is itself ries earlier month. a form of hate inextricably tied to the HALF PAGEthis ADVERT JAN 2020:Layout 1 09/01/2020 16:04 Pagespeech, 1
most vile anti-Semitism. “We hope that Facebook will follow up on this encouraging decision by adopting the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of anti-Semitism, in recognition that online is the new frontline against Jew hate.” She added, “The Board of Deputies, along with a number of other UK Jewish organisations, has regularly made it clear to Facebook that the company’s apparent reluctance to ban Holocaust denial raised serious questions about their determination to combat anti-Semitism. We look forward to working together with Facebook to ensure that this new policy is fully enforced in the period ahead.” World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder joined the praise. “By taking the critical step to remove Holocaust denial content, Facebook is showing that it recognises Holocaust denial for what it truly is, a form of anti-Semitism and therefore hate speech,” he said. “Denying the Holocaust, trivialising it, minimising it, is a tool used to spread hatred and false conspiracies about Jews and other minorities. Today’s announcement sends a strong message that Facebook will not allow its platform to be misused to promote hate.” Lauder added that throughout WJC’s engagement with Facebook, the company had shown responsibility to lead by example as
the world’s largest social media platform. “This decision demonstrates what can happen when we allow ourselves to learn, adapt, and make bold choices,” he noted. “WJC recognises and is grateful for the fruitful cooperation leading to this positive result. “We look forward to building upon this positive momentum and continuing to work together to eradicate all hate speech, against the Jews and other minority communities, from social media. “We call on all social media companies to take concrete action against Holocaust denial, so that the phrase ‘Never Again’ rings true.” Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, President, Conference of European Rabbis, also backed the move. “Finally, something has happened, even if this step was long overdue,” he said in a statement. “We welcome Facebook’s decision that in future it will no longer allow content and posts denying the Holocaust. However, this can only be the beginning, especially amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.” He added, “Online anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism rages too much across all social media platforms and poisons social cohesion. Hate speech should have no place within our society whatsoever. Facebook and other social media giants still have a long way to go to eradicate such vitriolic hate speech.”

Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh made his feelings clear this week in a conference meeting. “If we are going to live another four years with President Trump,” he said, God help us and the whole world,” Shtayyeh posted on Facebook. Shtayyeh’s comments were not unexpected given the Palestinians cut ties with Trump who moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Trump has also cut aid to the Palestinians, closed diplomatic offices in Washington aside from his peace deal. The final ‘betrayal’ for Palestinians was the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain normalising relations with Israel. Shtayyeh backs Biden as the way to a peace deal.

ZAKA’s “Don’t Leave them Behind” initiative saves lives BY ADAM MOSES Staff at President Reuven Rivlin’s official residence have joined ZAKA’s “Don’t Leave them Behind” initiative to support elderly citizens and isolated individuals as Israel battles the coronavirus pandemic. Tragically, a growing number of isolated people have been discovered weeks after passing away. ZAKA has recorded a spike of 30% of this type of fatality on last year. They have dealt with 136 cases of people living alone who died. The latest lockdown began before the High Holy Days. Rivlin met Minister for Social Equality and Pensioners Meirav Cohen, ZAKA Search and Rescue chairman Yehuda Meshi-Zahav and Director-General of Rivlin’s residence Harel Tubi regarding the scheme. Meshi-Zahav overviewed specifics to combat isolation. “We are dealing with two malignant diseases, coronavirus and loneliness,” Rivlin reportedly said. “They are both dangerous and deadly, we cannot allow the fight against one to mean that we neglect those who are alone, endangering their lives.” Rivlin praised the public reaction to the initiative which has seen 68,000 volunteers participate. “It is moving and inspiring,” he noted. “To prevent a disaster, you have established something wonderful, making a contribution to developing the medicine against the plague of loneliness.” Rivlin added, “At a time like this, when the level of trust and unity between our tribes is so deeply undermined, you are a bridge of conciliation, of connection. May this act of shining light create more love

(President) Rivlin praised the public reaction to the initiative which has seen 68,000 volunteers participate. and fellowship in Am Yisrael.” Harel Tubi praised ZAKA’s voluntary initiative to ‘adopt an elderly person’ and announced a registration line for volunteers. “Volunteering will include daily phone calls to relieve their isolation,” he reportedly explained. “If members of staff also
identify financial and social welfare needs or assistance from government ministries, our corona hotline will be able to give quick and efficient responses.” Cohen backed the project to protect the mental health of Israel’s elderly. “Even before the virus, about half of all
over-75s said they felt isolated and now, during the crisis, 33% of the elderly population say they are in a worse position,” he reportedly said. Cohen added, “We are making significant efforts to get to those who do not come to us on their own initiative, and so we reach out to hundreds of thousands of people, send text messages and go to their houses in order to check how we can assist them.” The ministry’s network of over 46,000 volunteers are helping the elderly population deal with isolation. Cohen described the long-term plan as a national challenge. He reportedly noted, “It is important that the public knows that we introduced an exception to the lockdown that you are allowed to visit a person in crisis or who needs assistance, and that in this case you are allowed to breach the restriction of distance from your home.” He added, “We intend to bring an additional issue to the corona cabinet which will encourage people to visit elderly family members who live alone because this is a population that suffers severely from loneliness and is at high risk. Zaka’s Meshi-Zahav thanked Rivlin for backing the initiative as it would encourage more people to join the escalating effort. Regarding the 68,000 volunteers to have come forward, Meshi-Zahav reportedly said, “This really is the best of Israel. If each one of us stops for a minute to think about the neighbours in the building, the old person or the person who lives alone one floor above or below us and makes contact, even by phone, we are sure to save lives.”
Bnei Brak spike feared after Simchat Torah MBE for Leader BY SIMCHA ABIR Ultra-orthodox leaders are awaiting news whether a spike in coronavirus cases will occur in Bnei Brak after Ashkenazi Lithuanian, Ashkenazi Chasidic and Sephardic religious leaders called on worshippers to use “necessary caution” during Simchat Torah. Prayers and dancing were allowed inside synagogues despite restrictions for places of worship. Rabbi Shevach Tzvi Rosenblatt, Rabbi Chaim Yitzchak Isaac Landau and Rabbi Masoud Ben Shimon acknowledged outdoor services were ‘preferable’ but worshippers could celebrate inside synagogues. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu however called on ultra-Orthodox
communities to honour Health Ministry’s guidelines. “I ask of everyone who is listening, protect yourselves, no dancing on Simchat Torah,” he reportedly told ultra-Orthodox radio station, Kol Barama. “There is no greater blasphemy than losing lives because of Simchat Torah. Pray outdoors, and follow the rules.” Before the festival, the Education Ministry reported over half of Israeli students infected with coronavirus were from ultra-Orthodox communities. This news followed coronavirus czar Prof. Ronnie Gamzu citing 40% of new cases coming in Charedi communities. Bnei Brak has been an ongoing issue regarding the deadly virus. And Director of Maayanei Yeshua Hospital Prof. Moti Ravid made controversial comments
about the community to Israeli broadcaster Kan. Hospital officials accepted Ravid’s resignation letter after they expressed regret over his remarks. “Abusive things had been uttered that should not be said against the ultra-Orthodox public in general and against rabbis in particular,” a statement noted. “These are outrageous things that emotionally harmed our patients,” a hospital official reportedly added. “These are things that should not have been said at this time, when the city is in the most difficult period in its history. As a result, there was no other choice but for him to vacate his place.” The hospital noted it was proud to serve the public while preserving the sanctity of human life.

Arab nations can fly in Israeli airspace A number of Arab nations can use Israeli airspace following an aviation deal between Israel and Jordan last week. Iraq, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are among countries to benefit from the agreement. Shorter flight times between Gulf states, the Far East and Asia, Europe and North America over both countries will be available. Fuel costs and emissions will also be cut. The Civil Aviation Authorities of Israel and Jordan signed the deal which comes into effect in the coming days. Transportation Minister Miri Regev said the deal demonstrated Israel’s developing assimilation in the Middle East. “We are forging new roads of cooperation with countries that share our interests and our vision for regional peace, in transportation, economy and the political fields,” she reportedly said. The deal is one of a number of initiatives following Israel’s historic accord with the UAE and Bahrain. Flight paths were approved with cooperation of the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation. The Ministry of Transportation confirmed flights from Bahrain, UAE and other countries could fly over Israeli airspace from Europe and North America.

Reverend Newman gets long service award Revered Gary Newman, pastoral minister at Cranbrook United Synagogue, has received a certificate for 20 years’ service as hospital chaplain of King George Hospital, Goodmayes and Queen’s Reverend Gary Newman Hospital, Romford. Reverend Newman visits patients on a weekly basis and to provide support to patients, families and hospital staff. He is on call for emergencies and provides support to bereaved families. He noted, “I look at my role as a calling, rather than a job, getting a tremendous amount of satisfaction knowing that I have been able to give comfort to patients, their families and to staff as well as to the volunteer hospital visitors provided by the League of Jewish Women. While so much in the world has changed over the last 20 years, the need to give support and comfort to people in distress is ongoing.” Michelle Minsky, US Chesed head described Reverend Newman as a “stalwart” of the Jewish visiting service. “He visits people from across the Jewish spectrum, making sure that Jewish patients in Essex get the services they need,” she said. “It is amazing that he has been doing this role, with such a good heart, for so long and hopefully for many more years to come.”
Reformed neo-nazi calls for greater solidarity A former Blood & Honour white supremacist undertook first UK engagement with Jewish-Muslim women’s network as hate went up crimes up 34%. A reformed female Neo-Nazi has called for greater solidarity with Jewish and Muslim women in the UK, in the face of an upsurge of far-right and white supremacist activity and conspiracy theories, and in the week the number of hate crimes recorded in England and Wales hit a record high. 30-year-old Lauren Manning was for over five years a member of the Canadian division of Blood & Honour, a notorious Neo-Nazi and white supremacist group founded in 1987 in the UK. Undertaking her first ever UK engagement with Nisa-Nashim, the UK’s Jewish-Muslim women’s network, Manning said that “the best thing [Jewish and Muslim women] can do during these times is to try and stand together as much as possible, and help each other where possible.” Manning placed her call for greater solidarity in the context of rising international far right-activity, a trend she attributes both to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Trump administration. This week Home Office data also showed that the number of racially or religiously aggravated offences in June 2020 was 34% higher than in June 2019. “The Trump administration is making things easy for the far right, because he
hasn’t directly condemned any of these groups and therefore they see it as a free pass to do whatever the hell they want” she said. “I know if I was still in Blood & Honour, that’s how I would view it too – even if he hasn’t directly supported it, he hasn’t condemned it either.” “The issues around COVID-19 have already encouraged more division and hatred from the right. People have legitimate anxieties because of this pandemic, however the far-right are connecting their anxieties to a far-right ideology, and that is when it becomes an issue.” “In every conspiracy theory there is no self-responsibility that comes with it. It is always someone else’s fault.” Manning, who was interviewed by Nisa-Nashim Chair of Trustees Hifsa Haroon-Iqbal MBE for the discussion, spoke to over 100 Jewish and Muslim women for the event. She explained how she had grown up in a middle-class Canadian neighbourhood, but turned to a life of drugs, alcohol, crime and ultimately white supremacy at the age of 17 after suffering abuse, losing her father at a young age and leaving home. She said that “instead of choosing self-acceptance, I chose self-hatred, and woke up each morning wanting to be someone else.” Manning went on to explain how Blood
Lauren Manning
and Honour had a problem with “everybody” and that one of the first conspiracy theories she engaged with was that “Jewish people had control over the media and society as a whole,” and that because she had never met a Jewish person before, “it became a fear of the unknown itself.” Manning said that she chose to leave the group after five years after a fellow member was murdered. An earlier initial attempt to escape failed when she was beaten and hospitalised. “The groups see women as subservient, meaning we were to bear the children

and take care of domestic stuff. There was endless pressure on me to have children to continue the white race.” “I couldn’t see myself teaching another kid how to hate – it doesn’t seem fair to force a set of opinions on a kid to hate people who have done nothing to deserve it.” Manning, one of very few visible reformed female Neo-Nazis, also said that female Neo-Nazis were portrayed as naïve and led easily astray by male members. “No. We actually make that choice ourselves – to enter and to exit. A lot of people like to think that we get dragged in by a boyfriend – but that had nothing to do with it.” Manning was eventually able to escape the group and today works for Life after Hate, a far-right disengagement group. Later this year she will be bringing out a memoir called Keep the Door Open: One Family’s Journey into White Supremacy. Laura Marks OBE, Interfaith Consultant and Nisa-Nashim Co-Founder, said: “If we are to challenge extremism, understanding how it takes hold is a really powerful tool. Meeting this incredible woman who embraced violence and then found a way out touches us in a totally different way. As Muslim and Jewish women, we commend Lauren for her incredible bravery and work in educating and raising awareness around the dangers of far right extremism.”

US Treasury places new sanctions on Iran BY SIMCHA ABIR The United States Department of Treasury has placed new sanctions on Iran’s global financing system. Measures on 18 Iranian banks will hit the government’s “malign activities”. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed sanctions were directed at the regime’s “radical, revolutionary cause” resulting in “untold suffering” across the Middle East and beyond. The US programme is set to continue until Iran stops supporting terrorist activities and nuclear programmes noted Steven Mnuchin, US Treasury secretary. Mnuchin, added that the administration aims to cut off Iran’s “illicit access to US dollars”. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif claimed in a tweet that Iranians would survive this “latest of cruelties” and culprits would face justice. According to Bicom, Iran’s central bank
governor, Abdolnaser Hemmati, said the US move was “propaganda” and would have little impact. US President Donald Trump’s administration has accelerated sanctions ahead of next months’ presidential election. Trump pulled the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in May 2018. The US recently reinstalled UN sanctions on Iran that ended with the signing of the JCPOA five years ago after Iran breached its JCPOA commitments. According to a Bicom briefing published this month, the sanction standoff between the US and European allies, and between JCPOA nations and Iran, could hit the nuclear deal. The US, Israel and Gulf states have called for a UN arms embargo on Iran, which expires on Sunday, to be reimposed. An embargo remains on Iran technology sales, including ballistic missiles until October 2023. The United Nations Security Council has

Around five thousand mourners attended the esteemed Rebbe’s funeral took place in Ashdod. Social distancing measures saw clashes between mourners and police at the specially arranged burial. His eldest son, Rabbi Meshulam Eliezer Leifer, was announced as his successor at the funeral. Succeeding his father, Rav Avrohom Abba Leifer, in 1990, the Rebbe was born in Newark, New Jersey. Many people want to leave a legacy to their family. Yet the same people may be concerned to use the traditional methods of gifting or life insurance to generate their legacy. Gifting requires a permanent transfer of your money to your beneficiary. What if the donor fears? • over time they will run out of resources to look after themselves and are keen to avoid dependency on others? Particularly if they might need to fund the cost of care. • the beneficiary is at risk of divorce, thereby risking the ultimate destination of the legacy. • the beneficiary is not sensible enough to look after the legacy now. • the beneficiary’s tax status means the beneficiary themselves might be excessively taxed now. Whole of Life Insurance premiums can become expensive in later life and the premiums may exhaust your remaining funds. Fortunately, there is another alternative option for leaving a legacy that results in no loss of access or control of your money. Business property relief (BPR) is a longstanding inheritance tax relief. BPR-qualifying investments held for two years become zero-rated for IHT. If you then continue to hold the investment until death, it can be passed on free from IHT. Contrasted against the 7-year gifting rule, BPR has several benefits.
FOR WHOM MIGHT BPR INVESTMENTS BE SUITABLE? 1. Elderly individuals who have not done much estate planning
33 Bell Lane, London NW4 2BP Tel: 020 8203 6920 Email: info@alphawm.co.uk www.alphawm.co.uk
2. Individuals who are in ill health Some BPR investments even come with an option of 2-year life cover plans. 3. Individuals that wish to mitigate IHT whilst retaining access to their capital BPR-qualifying investments stay in your
name. If your circumstances change and you need to access some money, you can request to make a withdrawal, subject to liquidity being available. 4. Business owners looking to sell their business (or who have sold a business within the past three years) If an individual owns their own business (or stake in one) and its activities meet the qualifying criteria for BPR, they should be able to pass on their shares in the business free from IHT when they die. If they sell some or all their business, the proceeds will be subject to IHT when they die, immediately increasing their exposure to IHT. However, if they use some or all the proceeds to buy shares in another BPR-qualifying business within three years, those shares should be zero-rated for IHT from day one. 5. Individuals with a power of attorney in place BPR-qualifying investments may be a suitable estate planning strategy where gifting or trust transfers are restricted or prohibited under Court of Protection rules because it is an investment that remains in the donors’ name. And, unlike strategies that rely on life assurance, there are no underwriting or medical forms to complete. 6. Individuals with large Isa portfolios An Isa offers valuable tax benefits during an individual’s lifetime but is still subject to IHT on death. An individual can transfer some or all their existing Isa into one that is invested in BPR- qualifying shares. By doing so, they retain Isa tax benefits and IHT exemption. A BPR-qualifying Isa is likely to be higher risk than more mainstream stocks-and-shares Isas. 7. Individuals who have inherited a spouse Isa Surviving spouses of Isa investors can make additional Isa subscriptions by being given a one-off incremental Isa allowance
equivalent to the value of their spouses Isa when they died. This extra Isa allowance is available to a surviving spouse whether they inherit their spouses Isa or not. An individual who inherits their spouses Isa can use this additional permitted subscription to invest some or all the value of the spouses Isa into an Isa that invests in BPR-qualifying shares. 8. Individuals looking to settle assets into trust A lifetime transfer of assets into a discretionary trust is a chargeable lifetime transfer and can immediately trigger a charge of 20 per cent on the amount settled that is more than individual’s nil-rate band. One alternative could be to invest in BPR-qualifying assets, hold them for two years, and then settle those assets into trust. This should not trigger a charge as the shares would qualify for BPR and therefore be zero-rated for IHT. The risks BPR-qualifying investments are not suitable for everyone. Any recommendation should be based on a holistic review of a person’s financial situation, objectives and needs. Finding a competent adviser to help you navigate through the various types of BPR investments is essential. BPR-qualifying investments put an individual’s capital at risk. The value of these investments, and any income from them, can fall as well as rise. Individuals may not get back the full amount they invest. Individuals should also be made aware that tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and tax rules could change in future. In addition, tax relief depends on the companies they invest in maintaining their BPR-qualifying status. The shares of unquoted and Aim-listed companies can be more volatile than shares listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange. They may also be harder to sell.

Knesset adopts UAE peace accord BY ADAM MOSES The Knesset approved Israel’s accord with the United Arab Emirates today. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates the Israeli government would formally adopt the treaty earlier this week. “This is a day with few like it in the history of the country, a day when a peace agreement with an Arab state is brought for approval by the Knesset,” Netanyahu reportedly said in presenting details of the deal at the Knesset session. “We are presenting a peace agreement
that does not contain secret addenda, it does not contain concealed appendices. Today we are tightening our relations with the Emirates and doing so during to our constant struggle against coronavirus.” Opposition leader Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) welcomed the deal but called on Israel to find a new leader. “We are living here and not in the Gulf,” Lapid reportedly said. “It is time for a leader that can forge peace at home, among Israelis. It is time for you to go.” The government formally adopted the Abraham Accords peace agreement for Knesset approval after Netanyahu and bin Zayed’s talk. The leaders discussed
cooperation in defeating the coronavirus pandemic and called for a consolidation of peace in the Middle East. Israel will host a UAE delegation in Israel following National Security Advisor Meir Ben-Shabbat visit to the UAE. Regarding his conversation with bin Zayed, Netanyahu told a cabinet meeting on Monday that the UAE agreement was different as Israel was not conceding territory. The economic component would benefit citizens of Israel and there would be an opening of the skies between the nations. There was further discussion on cooperation in advancing investments, tourism,

energy, technology and other areas. As for the landmark peace accord, Netanyahu noted it had altered Israel’s status in the region. “Arab states want to make peace with us because they see how we have turned Israel into a major power,” he said. They also see how we are standing against Iran, sometimes alone, against the entire world. They understand that we can assist them in many areas. Israel is neither a burden nor an enemy, but a vital ally all the time, especially now.” He added, “I have no doubt we will see agreements with additional Arab and Muslim countries.”

Covid cases show downward trend BY DAVID SAFFER Israel’s second nationwide lockdown has resulted in a significant drop in coronavirus cases from last month’s spike. Covid measures will potentially be eased from Sunday. The coronavirus cabinet debated the government’s strategy this week. Further discussions are due today. Hopes are high for a reopening of small businesses not reliant on the public, kindergartens and take-away services. Latest data shows a dip to 1,424 new coronavirus cases, 800 patients are in a serious condition in hospital, 254 are on ventilators. There have been 2,040 fatalities since the start of the pandemic. Jerusalem has the largest number of new cases followed by Bnei Brak, Modi’in Illit and Beit Shemesh. Ultra-Orthodox communities have the highest rates of infection. Bnai Brak has seen 18 deaths in the past week alone. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended the latest lockdown and voiced hope in a statement. “Infection figures are declining significantly,” he reportedly said. “In order to ease the lockdown and allow for a gradual reopening, in line with the outline establishing a coronavirus routine, we must wait for more data.” Netanyahu added, “We’re getting closer! But it will take a few more days, therefore, we decided to extend the lockdown, at this stage, until Sunday.” Israel began its second lockdown before the High Holy Days due to the spike in cases. The intervention has reduced the number of recorded cases from record highs last month. Whilst progress has been made, Knesset committee head, Likud MK Yifat Shasha-Biton, lamented that the government has lost the trust of the public in its handling of the pandemic. “We are seeing that our society has fallen apart and we must create a routine for life alongside the virus,” Shasha-Biton reportedly said. “The (exit) strategy should be one of caution and not fear, how we can cope with the virus while being wary of it.” She added, “We have lost public confidence and now is a good time to rebuild it, talk to the public logically, with real transparency, and let the local authorities handle the fight against the virus. “We need proper enforcement of infection hotspots that could become infection hotbeds. We need to act with thoughtfulness and not force. We are asking the Ministry of Health to take these parameters into account when devising its plan.” Shasha-Biton called on MKs to take into consideration the toll on society. “It is time we look at the coronavirus broadly as a crisis, not just at tackling the spread of the virus itself,” she reportedly said. “We must look at the number of unemployed, how many people have gone bankrupt, how many cases of domestic violence.

Israel began its second lockdown before the High Holy Days due to the spike in cases. The intervention has reduced the number of recorded cases from record highs last month. “We are losing an entire generation of children who have not been to school regularly for some time. We know the virus will be around for at least another year and we will not lock people in their homes for a year.” In related news, 52% of elderly coronavirus patients in Israel are ultra-Orthodox, the Health Ministry confirmed on Tuesday. The Charedi Institute for Public Affairs analysed data from the Ministry and Central Bureau of Statistics. The death rate among Bnai Brak senior citizens is higher than the national average. Discussions, meanwhile, are taking place with rabbinical leaders for a resumption of studies at yeshivas after it was accepted that the “capsule outline” initiative which called for small groups of students to prevent outbreaks of cases had failed. Netanyahu, speaking at the opening of the Knesset’s winter session on Monday, welcomed lockdown data illustrating a decline in cases and morbidity across the country.
“The lockdown measures that we take against the second wave of coronavirus save lives,” Netanyahu reportedly said. “But it is still too early to pat ourselves on our back.” He added, “We are undoubtedly on the right path, the path of responsibility and caution, a path of making sure to wear masks and keep your distance, a path we will continue walking down on.” Netanyahu continued, “Making the decision on the lockdown wasn’t easy. There were those who thought that there was no need for lockdown, that it was possible to continue with thousands of infections a day without lockdown. “These days, most of the public see that this decision that I led with my associates to impose a lockdown was correct. Without it, we would have been marching right into an abyss. “Despite the criticism, despite the mobilised and mobilising media, despite pressure from within and outside the government, I insist we safeguard the health of the Israeli citizens and that we will open the economy only in a safe, careful and gradual manner.” Israel’s leader recognised that the lockdown had been difficult for citizens, businesses, parents, children and the elderly. “We are with you all the time, the people of Israel, and we will keep helping you with more programs, more grants and more loans,” he reportedly said. Netanyahu called for the ultra-Orthodox community to back health measures. He reportedly noted, “The world of the Torah is dear to my heart, our Torah is a philosophy of life, it sanctifies life. Tell your communities, observe the rules, save lives.” Coronavirus czar Ronni Gamzu added that “red” cities and communities with high infection rates should remain closed whilst others could come out gradually with consideration for education and economics. Gamzu’s comments came a day after Health Ministry’s Head of Public Health Services Sharon Elrai-Price doubted

schools and kindergartens could reopen. Yaniv Bar Or, Private Daycare Centers Union, added that kindergartens and daycare centres could not open without government’s financial aid. Elsewhere, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein and Defense Minister Benny Gantz inaugurated a new military coronavirus hospital at Rambam Hospital in Haifa. Edelstein also toured Bnei Zion Hospital and Carmel Hospital in Haifa. Speaking at the ceremony, Edelstein reportedly noted. “Everyone sees the indication of a certain downward trend in infection rates, but those voices calling for the immediate reopening of everything ruin both the economy and human lives, of those who suffered enough already. “It is not possible to reopen and then be forced to shut down again within a few weeks. “When we are talking about a gradual exit, we want to ensure that we will not require you to shut your business down again. It is our duty as the government to ensure that those businesses and people who lost so much will receive more than just pocket money but full compensation in real time, and I intend to fight for this cause.” Haifa has seen disturbing protests where IDF troops have faced opposition from ultra-Orthodox communities in enforcing restrictions. “We approach residents politely but are met with a refusal to comply with health measures, especially in the religious seminaries,” a spokesman reportedly said. Lt. Col. Sagi Baruch, who heads the southern branch said resistance was also found in the ultra-Orthodox neighbourhoods of Ashdod. Whilst Israel has seen a decline in positive tests, Health Ministry Deputy Director-General Prof. Itamar Grotto had a warning for the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee on Sunday. “We are still in a state of emergency and have not reached our goal of no more than 2,000 new cases daily in any consistency,” he reportedly said. “The limitation on keeping no further than one kilometre from home is very important. Once we see the numbers come down we will allow more businesses to open, people will be able to go to the beach and other restrictions will be lifted.” Gantz, meantime, was briefed on the progress by the Biological Research Institute regarding vaccine tested this month. The next stage of development for the vaccine needs approval from the Helsinki Committee. It is hoped 30,000 volunteers will test the vaccine in January. To that end, Gamzu has appealed to Israelis to be tested if they display mild symptoms. “It is impossible to eradicate a pandemic without testing,” he reportedly said. “Even a person who feels healthy can infect others. Each person, even if they are feeling healthy but there’s a suspicion, should get tested.”

Israel against stealth fighter jets sale Israel is against the United States selling stealth F-35 fighter jets to Qatar. Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen reiterated Israel’s stance on Army Radio on Sunday. Questioned about a Qatar report regarding Washington buying F-35 fighter jets, Cohen was succinct in his opposition to the notion. “Our security and military superiority in the region are the most significant things for us,” Cohen explained. “Our region has still not turned into Switzerland.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has
continually denied Israel’s US-brokered accord with UAE included sales of the warplane though President Donald Trump has stated he has had “no problem” with the prospect. Reports of an initial deal of F-35s by December must not harm the long-term agreement of Israel’s “qualitative military edge” detailed in American law in the region compared to its neighbours. US Defense Minister Mark Esper confirmed the position after recent talks with Defense Minister Benny Gantz.
Israel and Lebanon discuss maritime border Israel and Lebanon held the first round of UN-US mediated talks to discuss its maritime border at a United Nations peacekeeping base in Naqura yesterday. Delegations agreed to a second round of talks on October 28. Israel’s Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said in a statement that the Israeli delegation would “give the process a chance”. A joint UN-US statement reportedly noted, “Representatives held productive talks and reaffirmed their commitment to continue negotiations later this month.” Lebanon’s delegation head, Brigadier
General Bassam Yassin, hopes to resolve the dispute in a “reasonable time”. Prior to the meeting, Steinitz called for realistic expectations from the dialogue. “We are not talking about negotiations for peace and normalisation, rather an attempt to solve a technical, economic dispute that for 10 years has delayed the development of offshore natural resources,” Steinitz tweeted. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hailed the talks as historic, adding that Washington looked ahead to talks over land border disagreements.

Finchley United Synagogue’s Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence and Rabbi Michael Laitner presented each carload with a goodie bag at Hasmonean Girls School playground. “Children are the heart of our community and Simchat Torah annually is a special joyous and entertaining time,” commented Shimon Gillis, Kinloss chief operating officer. “Unfortunately, with Covid-19 and the restrictions on children attending synagogue, we innovated our programming by doing a pre-Simcha Torah drive-in which was really well attended by the community.” Circus entertainment was provided including stilt walking, juggling, bubble blowing and ladder walking. The ‘Tribe Van’, created by the United Synagogue’s young people’s department, played music. Tribe’s Rabbi Cobi Ebrahimoff and fieldworkers handed out flags and balloons to children. Children also enjoyed an afternoon of fun at Borehamwood & Elstree United Synagogue’s Simchat Torah drive-thru to celebrate the junior Chattanim and B’not Chayil. Seventy cars came through with 160 children for entertainment that included a clown, photo prop glasses to post on social media, flags, a drive-by bracha from rabbis and Uncle Doovy’s ice cream. Business Breakfast with NatWest Group Chief Executive, raises £11,500 for Jewish Care
James Harding
Alison Rose, Chief Executive of The NatWest Group was interviewed by Michal Berkner, M&A Partner at international law firm Cooley, and James Harding, co-founder of Tortoise Media and former Editor of The Times and Director of BBC News, about her insights and thoughts on what will happen to business in Britain after lockdown. More than 100 people joined the online Business Breakfast, broadcast on Zoom, raising an incredible £11,500 for Jewish Care. Alison Rose, who has worked at NatWest for more than 27 years after joining as a graduate, talked about the “amazing entrepreneurial spirit of business owners in spite of the current climate,” praising the ability of many businesses who have “had to pivot to remain relevant.” Alison discussed how the pandemic has impacted what a bank will look like in the future, stating that Covid-19 had brought about “an acceleration of trends that were already happening, such as in person to online and digital transactions and usage.” She also discussed how the pandemic had “busted some myths about working from home. There is more that can be done from home than people thought and there has been a disruption of business models as a result.” Interviewer, Michal Berkner, asked Rose what role banks should play in addressing social inequalities and building communities. Alison responded that, “All large organisations have a role to play, and the ethos of being a purpose-led bank is to go beyond being purely transactional.” Alison spoke about the importance of creating a truly inclusive culture within companies, where talent can thrive and where there are active steps taken to tackle unconscious bias in the workplace. Michal Berkner asked, “What advice would you give to young women climbing the ladder in a male dominated business environment?”, to which, Alison replied that “The most important thing is to

be yourself. In some ways, you will have a desire to conform to what’s in the room, and you shouldn’t do that. If you have to change the fundamentals of who you are, the company is the wrong one for you. Get a supportive environment around you. Continuously invest in yourself; keep learning and developing and be proactive, put your hand up, take risks.” Lord Howard Leigh, Chair of Jewish Care’s Business Breakfast Committee said: “We are delighted that Alison, Michal and James were able to give their time to provide us with interesting and valuable insights in these extraordinary times. Alison Rose impressed us all with her candour for the challenges ahead, and the responsibilities which businesses now have to bear.” Adam Overlander-Kaye, Director of Fundraising and Community Engagement at Jewish Care said: “We are grateful to all those supporters who were able to join us and especially Cooley for sponsoring the event. Jewish Care relies on the generosity of its donors and the funds raised today will make a real difference to the residents in our care homes and those across the community who are relying on our vital services to support them at home at this extremely challenging time.”

Celebrating Succot across Jewish Care Residents and tenants across Jewish Care across London to the South East enjoyed celebrating Succot this week by decorating Succahs across our care homes and independent living apartments, and shaking the lulav and etrog with Rabbi Junik, Jewish Care’s spiritual and pastoral lead. Jack and Norma Klein, who are tenants at Jewish Care’s Wohl Court, will be celebrating their wedding anniversary next week. Jack, who has been an active member of Hemel Hempstead Synagogue for many years, helps run the Friday night service at Wohl Court. He says, “Norma and I met at Jewish Care’s Michael Sobell Community four years ago. We share a sense of humour and are very happy to be together. It’s good to celebrate Succot and do the mitzvah of shaking the lulav and etrog in honour of our wedding anniversary. I enjoy Succot, but my favourite festival is Simchat Torah as it’s about sharing joy. It’s good to share that with others around us.“ Jewish Care’s Rabbi Junik, added, “It’s very special that Jack and Norma are celebrating their anniversary next week, just after Succot which is all about unity. The lulav represents different types of people and our Judaism unites all of us, no matter what our background we come from, it’s all about togetherness.” Meanwhile David Kops who is a tenant at Jewish Care’s Shebson Lodge Independent Living apartments in Southend enjoyed sitting in the Succah and at Jewish Care’s Hyman Fine House in Brighton, residents enjoyed being in the Succah

Annabel Pagel says, “I haven’t had a Succah at home prior to moving to Hyman Fine House so I was very interested in the decorations. I think that the built-in Succah is a great invention, especially on wet and windy days.”

Aish on Campus deliver over 400 personalised waffles to students across the UK! Freshers week this year was even more busy than usual for the Aish on Campus team. Whilst so many of the normal features of the freshers experience for new students were delayed, cancelled or replaced, Aish ran a waffle delivery campaign. The campaign offered students the chance select their toppings, sauces and even ideal time for delivery. Packaged and branded waffle boxes were then delivered by an energetic team of Aish Student Ambassadors. Over 400 students on campuses across the UK including Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool, Manchester and various London based students took up this chance to get involved and received a free waffle. The project was a fantastic opportunity to connect students with each other, and with the broader Jewish student community in a completely Covid safe way, with the warmth of a delicious waffle. The demand was beyond our expectation and we have literally run out of boxes to deliver on some campuses. Aish UK designs and creates innovative, cutting edge immersive experiences and informal educational platforms to connect young Jews with each other, and Jewish values, with the goal of

developing a sustainable and vibrant Jewish future. When students begin their academic journey in Universities, and leave the warmth of their home towns and comforts, it is so important to enable them to start developing their skills and capability to cultivate their own community. Through engaging programming,
and social interactions with their Jewish peers, the future leaders of the Jewish world are born and incubated. The Aish team are dedicated to inspiring those young Jews to stand up and take their place in the Jewish people. Aish on Campus always looks to launch the year with a project that everyone can get their
teeth stuck into, and the “waffle run” idea did just that. Students commented “Thank you so much for the waffles, they must have taken ages to make but they were so yummy and so worth it!” (Millie Walker, Leeds Campus) and “This made my day” (James Lee, Leeds Campus). “It was so great to see that despite the local lockdowns, isolations and Covid related challenges, both the Aish on Campus teams and the students really went above and beyond to launch this year with a fantastic event. We are really excited to be launching a brand new initiative called “Aish Encounter” which takes virtual engagement to a completely new level, and will capitalise on the circumstances, to broaden the connection between Jewish students across the country.” Rabbi Gideon Goldwater, Director of Aish on Campus.

Virtual London Marathon Matt Lucas’ star appearance at Chai’s online afternoon social for Jewish Care On the 7th October, Matt Lucas was the star guest at Chai’s fortnightly Zoom Wednesday afternoon social. The socials, organised by long - standing volunteers Lynne Silver, Andee Roback and Barbara Freedman give Chai’s clients the opportunity to virtually connect and enjoy some live entertainment. There is often a guest appearance but securing the ‘high in demand’ famous Matt Lucas was particularly exciting. Matt’s winning combination of his down to earth nature, warmth and humour captivated everyone who tuned in as he gave his insightful and honest account of his journey performing as a young boy from The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School to starring in famous and popular TV shows such as ‘Little Britain’ and currently ‘The Great British Bake Off’ which has had great reviews. In an approachable and easy manner, Matt answered a series of questions from the committee covering a range of topics such as his biggest achievement - which he candidly shared was his update of the lyrics of a 20-year old comedy song on raising awareness for children on how to avoid coronavirus. The song unexpectedly received three million views which he used to fundraise for his FeedNHS campaign.
Benjamin Cowen runs the virtual Virgin Money London Marathon 2020 for Jewish Care
21 year-old Benjamin Cowen ran the virtual Virgin Money London Marathon 2020 this year on Sunday 4 October and has raised almost £4000 for Jewish Care. The third-year student who is at Warwick University ran a circular route from his student house in Leamington Spa through Warwick University campus. Benjamin, who comes from Muswell Hill, says, “I always wanted to run a marathon at some point in my life so I was really pleased to get a place to run for Jewish Care. One of my grandpas, Malcolm Cowen has been involved with the charity and my other grandpa Samuel Saunders, who sadly passed away in 2014, was living with dementia. I wanted to fundraise to help people to benefit from the specialist dementia services that Jewish Care provides for the community. “Once it was clear that we weren’t going to be running in April, I followed a training programme through lockdown. It really helped to have the advice from Jewish Care in person at the start and then on Zoom as well as the support from my friends who met me along the route with water and gels and took turns to run with me on the day. “I would totally recommend doing a virtual half or full marathon and would say to people to sign up and don’t even think about the mileage because with all the advice and support that Jewish Care and their runners give, you’ll never really
think about how long it is. You’ll be doing it for an amazing cause and you’re going to feel incredible when you’ve done it.” Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising & Community Engagement, Adam Overlander-Kaye, said, “I’d like to congratulate and thank Benjamin for his commitment in running the marathon virtually for us this year. Taking part in a fundraising challenge is a very special way to both honour the memory of a loved one and raise much needed funds for Jewish Care. We are hugely appreciative to Benjamin for raising funds to help us to support our specialist services for people and their families who are living with dementia in the community and in our care homes.” If you would like to take on a challenge, whether it’s pounding the streets, climbing up mountains or cycling across the city, there are events for people of all ages and fitness levels to help raise money for Jewish Care. No challenge is too big or small, taking on a 10k, half marathon, marathon or bike rides are a great way to get fitter whilst supporting your favourite charity. Jewish Care will support you all the way to the finish line with a dedicated member of the team to help you with your fundraising and training to get you ready for the challenge. It’s not too late to sponsor Benjamin by visiting https://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/BenjaminCowen
Matt Lucas
On behalf of the committee, co-chair Andee said, “Knowing Matt from past charitable work together, we knew that he would give his time generously if he could for such a worthwhile cause like Chai. Fortunately, he was able to squeeze us in between other commitments. And to quote Matt, “It’s very nice to be part of this. What you are doing is brilliant – how you are all coming together, staying together and looking after each other.”
Tuffkid Nursery had fun preparing for Succot!
Pupils at Kisharon, Tuffkid Nursery work as a team and have fun building a Succah
The children at Kisharon, Tuffkid nursery had a fantastic Succot themed week. Children learnt the many symbols of the chag including the esrog, lulav and of course the succah. Each child had a chance to shake a lulav and esrog, build an indoor succah by turning a table over and placing schach on top. Some very strong Tuffkids even helped to build a little succah in the garden with play bricks learning to turn-take as it was a tight squeeze for all to fit in the succah at once!
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
In art as well as paintings children created their own esrog to hang up in their succah. Even music lessons were Succot themed where children used rhythm sticks (claves) to ‘build’ the succah by ‘hammering the nails and painting the walls’. Children were able to develop their gross motor skills as part of the activities. Listening to the story called “The Sukkah that I built” helped the children to consolidate everything they learned about Succot.

Kisharon have a packed Succot-themed week!
Kisharon and Alei Tzion Synagogue enjoying exclusive virtual tour of Israel && concert by Moshe Feiglin of Kadmon Tours
Kisharon kept the spirit of Succot alive all week planning a special programme to celebrate Succot together - despite the British weather and Covid restrictions. During the Chol HaMoed week, Kisharon held a concert with renowned Chazan Jonny Turgel who performed on zoom in a special music concert accompanied by talented pianist Josh Nesbitt on the piano, a Sukkah decorating session and making round challah for Yom Tov. Succot themed packages were collated and distributed to those supported by Kisharon who are part of the College, Day Opportunities and Supported Living and included special easy read educational material, Succot decorations to hang in the sukkah plus tasty Yom Tov treats. An easy read round challah recipe was included too. As part of Kisharon’s partnership with Alei Tzion Synagogue both communities joined an exclusive virtual tour of Israel which consisted of a concert, performed and hosted by the talented singer/songwriter Moshe Feiglin of Kadmon Tours. Participants enjoyed the sights and sounds of Israel, were able to meet locals virtually and could request songs to be played resulting in a unique and fun night to remember and celebrate. Attendees commented it was interesting to see another side of Israel from the comfort of their own homes and still socialise at the same time.
Jason Taitz, Chair of Alei Tzion community comments, “It was great to have Alei partner with Kisharon to put on yet another successful joint event, continuing to bring our communities closer together”. Kisharon ended the week with a meaningful Succot themed Kabbalat Shabbat session. Aviva Braunold, Manager of Kisharon Vocational College says, “It has been wonderful to see so many people celebrating all together this week in a variety of ways. From the decorations and round challah making that people enjoyed bringing to their Yom Tov tables and to see the joy on everyone’s faces at the concert with Jonny Turgel, together with learning and connecting with others during the tour of Israel. It felt like a week of simcha and happiness for all.” As well as helping the people Kisharon support prepare for Succot, Rabbi Beni ensured as much access as possible having decorated Sukkas, and providing Lulavim and Esrogim for anyone staying in their supported living flat over Succot. Rabbi Beni says, “Succot is a very happy time and we tried our best to keep it that way for people we support, despite more limited access to shul, family and public venues for usual Chol HaMoed outings. Achieving all this by uniting the efforts of Kisharon staff, Kisharon and GIFT volunteers and even teaming up with Alei Tzion, has made it even more special”.

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON The village of Povalikhino [Повалихино] is not one which instantly springs to readers' geographical minds, but in recent weeks it hit the headlines in a very unusual election. Nikolai Loktev, the Kremlin party incumbent needed a notional contender to run against, and as there was nobody who apparently wanted the role, he nominated his cleaner, Marina Udgodskaya. In a rural district with a population of around 400 people, Ms Udgodskaya won the race with 84 of 130 votes cast. The 35-year-old mother of two, told Russian reporters she was shocked by her win. Now I know Jacqueline Curzon there’s a lot of discussion about who should ultimately replace Boris John- PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY son, so never mind Rishi Sunak, the obvious question is - has anybody actually asked the name of Boris's cleaner? this column, has not felt the urge to suppress an innocent cough on public transport, because those around will make an assumption that you're Covid positive. I was in that invidious position a few weeks back, innocently choking on a drink after reading a message that a friend had died. Some moved further away in a heartbeat. Noone asked if I was alright, which indeed I wasn't. Spare a thought for those who had symptoms of lung cancer and were reluctant to a/ go to the GP or Hospital, perhaps fearing it could be Covid, or b/ that it could have been trivial, and they would just be seen as time wasters. Dr Jeanette Dixon, president of the Royal College of Radiologists and a senior lung cancer specialist, said that for two months over the pandemic she had "not seen a single curable patient because they had presented far too late for life-saving treatment." Dr Neil Smith from Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance said his biggest fear is that "in future years I'll be doing more home visits for palliative care, because as a GP I am not diagnosing my patients soon enough." NHS - this is down to you! Nightingale hospitals in Manchester, Harrogate and Sunderland have been put on standby amidst warnings that the UK death toll is going to rise sharply. This is interesting, because of the 7 temporary hospitals opened during the first wave of pandemic, only the Manchester and London hospitals were used, and that fairly nominally. NHS staff have told me there wasn't sufficient time to move patients to dedicated covid facilities. Ergo, every aspect of NHS provision was then impacted negatively by such decisions. And now for a little update from the White House, where it would appear that Donald Trump has not been able to capitalise on a sympathy vote following his recent Covid diagnosis. He has also upset Dr Anthony Fauci, misquoting him as endorsing [Trump's] handling of the pandemic. Unfortunately, Americans are also cynical about Joe Biden going round door-to-door, appealing to voters, something he hasn’t done until recently. Donald Trump has been seen waving variously from the National Medical Centre, or from his car to his adoring public. Americans are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place, having two septuagenarians as their Presidential choices. Both have health issues, and opposing leadership styles, but Trump will now be harder hit as he has been so vociferous in his dismissal of all things Covid. His medical updates are being provided by his special physician, Dr Sean Conley, who has given selective updates about treatments, medications and progress. Perhaps if his name was Sean Connery, the updates - written on Basildon Bond, of course - would state that President Trump is just a ‘little shaken,’ but not stirred. On the topic of Bond, a universally
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
recognised fictional character, cinemagoers might be dismayed to hear that the latest film, ‘No Time To Die’ has been further delayed until 2021. MGM and Universal are behind the decision to delay Mr Bond's next appearance, doubtless attributable to a projected crash at the box offices. The bad guy in the movie is Ernst Blofeld, but to cinema fans, the real villains are likely to be Boris Johnson and the culture secretary, for failing to provide timely financial aid for the industry. This week we saw financial investment to the tune of £1.57 billion to the Arts, of which £257 million is given as a survival fund. The Halle, CBSO and Royal Academy of Dance are but a few of those to benefit from the magic wand/ baton of Oliver Dowden. Nonetheless, we are still being called on, like the authoritative pointing finger of the Kitchener poster, to support cinemas, but this will likely be too late, with national closures scheduled: Cineworld - the UK’s major chain - has announced indefinite closure of 127 of its cinemas, with Vue rapidly following suit. Over in the USA, the epicentre of world cinematography, huge industries are now closed forever. 7000 venues owned by Cineworld and its sister company Regal, are gone for good. Gone - with the wind, of a virus. And the rise in online mediums, such as Netflix. As the big screen may soon become a distant memory, anyone wanting instead to access the small screen during this coming week, could always tune into Challenge and Courage, where I will share various aspects of my life as a musician, mother and unlikely star of stage & screen; this can be accessed on zoom 813-1582-8394, p/w SUJC, on Monday 19th October at 7.30pm. Hosted in Shenley, refreshments will be provided by attendees, in the comfort of your own sitting room. We always like to round off with salutations and celebrations. Professor Michael Houghton (69) was jointly awarded a Nobel Prize, with his American counterparts Harvey Alter and Charles Rice. There are more than 70 million cases of hepatitis worldwide, and 400,000 deaths annually, and for the first time in history, post-transfusion hepatitis can now be cured, whilst total eradication is a global possibility. Exploring the humble Autumn roots swede, parsnips & turnip BY DENISE PHILLIPS The season of autumn brings the absolute best crop of our root vegetables which are a powerhouse full of fibre, antioxidants, key nutrition including potassium, vitamin C -and they are extremely low in calories too. Swede (or the American name rutabaga, is a hybrid between a turnip and cabbage. It has a sweet, earthy flavour and best is cooked until tender or soft but will fall apart if over cooked. However, it makes delicious recipes; vegetarian shepherd’s pie, grated and used as a topping, slice for a root grating, chop into cubes for a minestrone, mashed and made into vegetable scones. Parsnip is a root vegetable that is closely related to carrots and parsley. Firstly, don’t bother to peel the young variety, just scrub clean to remove any dirt and cook whole or slice into large wedges.
For older parsnips peel thinly and trim away any central fibrous and tough sections. Parsnips make delicious soups, purees to top bruschetta, curries with chickpeas, latkas as well as in sweet cakes, muffins, and puddings. Turnip is a root vegetable with a creamy white colour and purple top. It is a taproot which means it grows downwards into the earth acting as a storehouse of nutrients for the plant above. Young fresh turnips can be eaten raw and are particularly tasty when grated or thinly sliced into salads. Add turnips to meat stews, cholent, rice or grain recipes, mash with other vegetables, roast with a garlicky and cheese gratin, miso glaze or even pickle them. The root vegetables I have chosen to explore are the ones typically used to make chicken soup, but they do have a delicious purpose beyond this. From the cooked
soup vegetables, I would like to share some delicious recipe ideas. • Roast half of the vegetables with some spices like paprika, cumin and coriander for about 20 minutes and puree the other half so that you have a smooth and crunchy vegetable dish. Top with sprigs of parsley for colour and a sprinkling of pumpkin seeds or roasted almonds. • Make a vegetable loaf; add cooked lentils, garlic, chopped courgette, 1 egg, breadcrumbs or ground almonds, transfer to a lined loaf tin and bake for 40 minutes. • Vegetable crumble; add some caramelised onions and top with breadcrumbs or porridge oats and wholemeal flour mixture combined with parsley and walnuts. Bake for 30 minutes at 200C or until golden and crispy. Above is a recipe that uses all three of these delicious root vegetables.

Boundary issues and assertiveness BY ARYEH SAMPSON Have you ever had someone push in front of you in a queue, stand uncomfortably close to you, or even been asked an inappropriately personal question? If you have, you will know it can leave one feeling irritated, annoyed or upset. We have an intuitive sense that there are natural physical boundaries as well as psychological boundaries that should not be crossed. Honouring them is important for the maintenance of healthy relationships and society. The right balance develops a child that is secure and well adjusted. The psychoanalytic thinker Dr John Bowlby traces many of the problems people experience in later life to not receiving a sense of security and acceptance in childhood. He explains that the relationship a child creates with their parents often serves as a model for future relationships. Conflicts due to boundary issues are very common. For example, there are people who have an excessive need to control others, or control their personal space. Many people struggle to say ‘no’ to others when asked to do something which they feel is inappropriate. I would like to suggest a few approaches to help develop greater assertiveness.
1) BUILDING SELF ESTEEM
Often people who have difficulty being assertive act this way because they don’t want to be looked at negatively – a fear of rejection. This can be especially difficult when a person has low self esteem, which increases the need for others’ approval. Dr Abraham Twerski describes a case of a doctor who would never refuse a request regardless of how unreasonable it was, and constantly did things for others out of a desperate desire for others’ approval. He pretended to be glad to do the favours but inside resented people imposing on him. Once the doctor recognised the problem and addressed his self esteem issue, he was able to free himself of the inability to say no to others’ requests.
2) UNDERSTANDING THE APPROPRIATE RESPONSE
Often people lack assertiveness because they think they do not have a right to state a viewpoint or ask for what they want or deserve. Challenging these self defeating beliefs is very important.

ASK THE RABBI
15 OCTOBER 2020
Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com SHOULD I PRAY FOR A NEGLIGENT CORONA PATIENT? Dear Rabbi I am mindful of your strong remarks about people who have been flaunting the Covid19 rules and I am totally in agreement with your sentiments. My question is, light of all the current behaviour, whether in Israel or New York, if someone puts themselves in deliberate danger and then takes ill, should we be praying for such a person to get better? Faivish Dear Faivish You raise a fascinating question. There is a general rule that when one’s life is in danger and they miraculously emerge unharmed, then there is an obligation to recite a special thanksgiving blessing (“Hagomel” as it is known). The question arises if one should deliberately put themselves at risk in the first instance whether they should still recite the blessing. So, for example, were one carrying a sum of money in their pocket and they get held up by an armed robber in the street, “give me your money or I’ll shoot,” and they refuse to give up their money, thus prompting the robber to shoot, but there somehow manage to escape unscathed, should they thereafter recite the thanksgiving blessing? The answer is no, since he had a paramount obligation to hand over his money rather than risk his life. (A renowned 18th century halakhist described a case scenario of someone that drank poison and put himself at risk but the doctors managed to save his life, he doesn’t recite the special thanksgiving prayer because
he brought the danger upon himself. However, if he drank it due to great distress because he was desperately thirsty, then he would recite the blessing). If someone categorically refuses to wear a mask and adhere to the rules that could protect his life, and then thereafter contracts the virus he has effectively brought the danger upon himself. Even as he later recovers, based on the aforementioned, he is not worthy of reciting the thanksgiving blessing! I have heard it said in the name of some leading contemporary rabbinical experts that there is a parallel to be drawn between the aforementioned and praying for those who bring the suffering upon themselves. If you don’t deserve to recite the blessing after recover you don’t deserve to have prayers said for your recovery. Personally, I would think that when someone is in peril we do all we can to save their lives – and if that includes prayer then so be it. But all the above nevertheless reflects the gross negligence and terrible sin committed by those who do flaunt the rules, thus putting their own lives, and that of others, at risk – which is in direct violation of the Biblical precept of “looking after one’s life.”
“GO EAT A BAGEL!” Dear Rabbi, Hope you’re well and wishing you and your family a belated Shana Tova. I was writing to you regarding your – always excellent – Ask The Rabbi Column, which appeared in last week’s Jewish Weekly (1 October). In your answer to Winston, you referred to
a line from a Russian Rabbi – “Go eat a bagel”, which you said was a Russian way of saying “get lost, get out of here”. For some reason, that line intrigued me, so I asked a friend of mine, from Moldova, if she had ever heard of it and what was the meaning to it – to which she hadn’t. Puzzled by this, she then went to ask not only her mum and grandma – but also her 100-year-old great grandma, a former professor of Russian language and literature. She spent nearly half a week going through her Encyclopaedias – but unfortunately, all to no avail. Due to this one line, your column this week is the talk of the Chisinau Jewish community (albeit a rather small one), and is also making conversation in Russia as my friend’s family have asked others to try and get to the bottom of this. To pacify both myself, my friend, three generations of her family in Moldova, and extended family in Russia – we’d all be very grateful if you could let us know of the origin to this saying. Andrew Dear Andrew With profuse apologies to you, your friend from Moldova, her mother, grandmother, great grandmother and indeed the Chisinau Jewish community (wow that’s a lot of baggage just post Yom Kippur). Having dug deeper into the story it seems that “go eat a bagel” is more a Yiddish expression but indeed spoken by a majority of Jews who lived in the former Soviet Union. Bearing in mind that before the Holocaust near 13 million Jews spoke Yiddish and that Yiddish was one of the official
languages of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (until 1938, the Emblem of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic included the motto Workers of the world, unite! in Yiddish) and that Yiddish was also an official language in several agricultural districts of the Galician Soviet Socialist Republic, then the

Pirkei Avot This week we meet two of the most famous rabbis in our long history: Hillel and Shammai. They received the traditions of the Torah from the previous trustees, namely Shemayah and Avtalyon. We start with Hillel. He is most famously known for the story involving the wannabe convert who came to him and Shammai and asked them to teach the whole Torah to him whilst standing on one foot. Shammai sent him away and scolded him for asking such a ridiculous request.
Rabbi in the story, living in the Soviet Union, addressing another Jewish woman, would have likely used this Yiddish expression, and I should be forgiven for suggesting it is a Russian saying. In any event Andrew, as a gesture for your efforts, I’d be happy to take you out to a bakery of your choice, for a nice – bagel!
Mishna 12 Hillel on the other hand, stood on one foot and said the words ‘v’ahavtah lreacha kamocha- you shall love your fellow like yourself.’ He told the convert ‘ that is the Torah, the rest is explanation - go and learn it.’ Of course there is much more depth to this tale then just highlighting the different approach from two of the leading figures of the generation. It is beyond the scope of this article to delve into the Talmudic thought process of what Shammai was really telling him and the intensely profound message of Hillel and what the convert
really was asking in his question. Hillel’s advice for generations is: ‘Be among the disciples of Aharon, loving peace and pursuing peace, loving people and bringing them closer to the Torah.’ Hillel was the man who was so poor that he couldn’t afford to pay the small fee to enter the shul. Instead he famously climbed upon the roof in thick snow to listen to words of Torah, until he was found unconscious after blocking the skylight. By following the words of such a great man one will surely come into the embrace of Hashem, Amen.

Torah from Israel The Ways of G-d and The Ways of Man BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN The creation of our world is described in the Torah as a flurry of activity. Rapidly, across a short span of six days, the Universe as we know it, is called into being. In effortless fashion, a Divine declaration or announcement draws each aspect of our world into being. By contrast, the creation of Man is far more deliberate and even methodical. Man is the centerpiece of G-d’s creation and his crafting is described as a physical action, taken carefully and with great design. Before actually crafting Man, G-d announces his intention to ‘jointly create’ a human being’. The phrase “na’aseh” implies that multiple partners are partnering in Man’s creation or, at the very least, that multiple beings are being consulted with. Obviously, G-d alone created Man, yet the Torah presents it as a shared project between G-d and heavenly angels. By portraying this collaborative creation of Man-even though G-d is the sole architect- the Torah showcases the critical trait of humility. G-d doesn’t take full credit for the most magnificent part of His Universe; similarly, we shouldn’t aggrandize our own lesser accomplishments. Humility lies at the heart of moral behavior and, also, serves as a gateway to many other ethical traits. By modeling humility during His greatest display of creativity, G-d juxtaposes His majesty with humility; this juxtaposition of G-d’s grandeur and humility will recur throughout the Torah. However, in describing the creation of Man as a joint project, G-d demonstrates more than just the trait of humility. Manthe only creature with consciousness- is a natural rival to angels, and these angels should be informed of the Man’s creation and be given a “heads up”. Rashi comments that G-d teaches us ‘derech eretz’ –behaving with courtesy and civility- in this case informing the angels of a decision which will impact them. Ironically, by considering the sensitivity of the angels and appearing to consult with them, G-d invites theological questioning; the verse can be interpreted as if G-d were actually aided by angels in the creation of Man. Though this heretical notion is quickly repudiated by the next verse, this phrase of ‘na’aseh’ can potentially arouse
religious questioning. Evidently, adherence to “derech Eretz” is an important enough value to justify a verse which may invite theological heresy. The term “derech eretz” refers to many different values. The phrase “derech eretz kadmah l’Torah” (derech eretz preceeds Torah study) doesn’t actually appear in the writings of Chazal but is based upon several similar statements, and endorses moral behavior as the foundation for religious growth. Without ethical conduct, Torah study becomes hollow and even noxious. Additionally, the well-known Mishnah in Avot (2:2) extols the virtue of Torah accompanied by derech eretz (Torah im derech eretz), advising gainful employment and professional occupation alongside Torah study. Generally, then, derech eretz refers either to moral behavior or to the importance of earning a living. In our context though, the phrase of “derech eretz” cited by Rashi, refers to an entirely different value. It refers to the value of conforming to popular convention and politeness: it is only “mannerly” to inform the angels of the creation of human beings. This value shouldn’t be confused with the trait of humility- which is an “absolute” moral value and is displayed by G-d when He presented the creation of Man as a joint project. Derech eretz isn’t a moral trait but the value of conforming to basic norms of human behavior. Polite and sensitive humans would inform people impacted by their decisions and, likewise, showcasing derech eretz, G-d informed the angels of His decision. This connotation of derech eretz was advocated by Rav Hirsch who, in 1851, defined his approach as “Torah Im Derech Eretz” writing: “Derech Eretz includes everything that results from the fact that man’s existence, mission and social life are conducted on Earth… It also includes the customs and considerations of etiquette that the social order generates”. Evidently, part of religious life demands compliance with the codes of conduct which humans cultivate and expect from one another. The religious value of derech eretz and conformity to human courtesies is far from obvious. After all, religion is transcendent and eternal and shouldn’t

Evidently, part of religious life demands compliance with the codes of conduct which humans cultivate and expect from one another. be grounded in human cultural norms. Man is flawed and often vain and what value can be assigned to the codes of conduct which human culture generates? Obviously, a religious person has to be moral and honest as these are absolute moral traits but why should human politeness and convention guide religious behavior? Not only does derech eretz seems irrelevant, but attention to manners and civility can distract us from our more important duties to G-d. Too much attention to the expectations of Men can sway a person from the expectations of G-d and the eternal duties of religion. G-d’s attention to derech eretz instructs us otherwise: although religion demands that we soar to Heaven, Torah was delivered to Men who live in human communities on Earth. Living together, humans develop a culture of human interaction – in particular, human interaction in public situations. G-d expects us to confirm to three different systems- in descending order: first and foremost, we
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
conform to His Divinely stipulated Torah and system of halacha. Secondly, we conform to absolute moral values which G-d himself models for us, and which G-d endowed the human heart with. Finally, we are meant to conform to human codes of conduct and politeness- derech eretzthe way of the land. On the roadways, in our work environments, in shopping centers, and in the general “spaces” with other humans, we aren’t just expected to act morally but also in accordance with polite and respectful human behavior. Failure to adhere to those values and to act politely, veers from the lesson which G-d Himself provided when he created us. At the origin of human life G-d displayed the importance of human conventions and codes of conduct to stress how vital these values are to human experience. Rabbi Moshe Taragin has taught at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion, for the past 22 years.

TRANSFORMING DARKNESS
If – as we see from the first chapter of the Chumash – G-d created everything including light, why did He create darkness? Maybe it was as a rival to light; we do not appreciate light without contrasting its opposite, just as we do not appreciate good without the contrast with evil. But if we weigh up darkness against light we see that G-d regards light as superior. From a human point of view this teaches us that our task when confronting darkness is to try to roll it away (look at the opening blessing of the Ma’ariv service) – not by totally eradicating darkness but by transforming as much as we can into light. Think of the events of the past century with all the darkness that evil men and movements brought over Europe. Darkness represents the denial of human rights and human conscience and dignity; light stands for human understanding, respect, tolerance and love.
THE RAW MATERIALS OF CREATION
Ancient debate surrounded the issue of Creation ex nihilo, “out of nothing”. The first chapter of B’reshit constantly
uses the phrase, “And G-d said”, which led the philosophers to aver that G-d created by means of a series of utterances. They quoted the verse, “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made” (Ps. 33:6). G-d said, “Let light exist”, and thereupon light did exist. From another angle, the beginning of Pir’kei Avot (1:18) says that G-d used three principles to establish the world – justice, truth and peace (Zech. 8:16). The Midrash (B’reshit Rabbah 3:9) says that He made several earlier worlds but the preliminary ones did not please Him. Possibly this means that the earlier worlds did not take to His recipe of justice, truth and peace.
MIRACULOUS STRUCTURE
A visit to a medical centre with its long lists of specialists ought to make a person more religious.
We are created so intricately that every part and function of the body is designed to interact with every other. Sometimes there is a problem, and then – thanks to the Divine blessing which has endowed man with so many talents – specialists can work on the particular element which needs support and repair, and restore the equilibrium of the body. Judaism recognised long ago that the wisdom with which the human body is designed needed regular acknowledgment: hence the “Asher Yatzar” blessing which is said after going to the bathroom. Its theme is there in the opening words, “Blessed are You… who formed man with wisdom”, and reinforced in the closing phrase, “Blessed are You, who heals all flesh and acts wondrously”.
Judaism recognised long ago that the wisdom with which the human body is designed needed regular acknowledgment
It is indeed a miracle that our various parts are there and that they function efficiently. It is also a wondrous gift that medical specialists can be G-d’s partners in bestowing healing when it becomes necessary. (Welcome back as we continue on our journey through summarising the laws of Shabbat. Please remember that these laws are presented as a “taster” and each of the 39 Melachos of Shabbat as well as any positive commandment or Rabbinic enactment regarding how to keep Shabbat, are deeper and broader than can be contained in our columns.) We will open the topic of “Lash” - literally “kneading” but properly explained to be the mixing of small solid particles with a liquid to form a solid or semi solid consistency. As you will be aware by now, some “Lash” activity is forbidden by the Torah, others Rabbinically and yet others only permitted if done in an unusual manner, as shall be explained. “Needless” to say, the laws of kneading apply to food and non-food items alike.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
They also apply to items that grow from the ground and ones that don’t. Finally, they also apply even if one intends to use the mixture immediately. The Torah forbids thick mixtures, whereas the Rabbis also forbade loose mixtures. The difference between a thick or thin mixture may be displayed if one pours the mixture from one utensil to the other. If they transfer from A to B easily they are considered loose. If one transgressed the laws of Lash when preparing food it depends on the following: If they created an indisputable forbidden mixture intentionally they may not eat it at all and others need wait until the end of Shabbat before eating it. If they formed the mixture in error, ideally they should wait until the conclusion of Shabbat; however, if there is necessity for the immediate use of the mixture it may be used even on Shabbat. Furthermore, if the mixture they performed was not unanimously agreed to be forbidden, for example, if one merely poured water into a (subsequently thick) mixture but then altered how they mixed the solid and liquid from the normal manner, it is not forbidden to use it on Shabbat. We will next present some regular applications of the laws of Lash.

Man – In Whose Image? BY RABBANIT RACHELLE FRAENKEL After Elul and the High Holidays, Parashat Bereishit comes along with its renewal: A new cycle of Torah reading, A new world emerges out of chaos, and man is about to be created. Endless potential, full of awe and wonder. “And G-d said: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...” The world of Midrash is tumultuous in the face of these words. To whom does G-d turn? What is the meaning of the call ‘let’s create’ in the plural? We grew up on the notion that G-d is turning to the angels, His Heavenly entourage, a Divine court where the virtues and considerations that make up the world, are voiced through spiritual beings who represent them: “When G-d was about to create humans, the angels formed themselves into parties, some of them saying, ‘Let him be created,’ while others urged, ‘let him not be created.’ Chessed said, ‘Let him be created, he will dispense acts of lovingkindness.’ Truth
said, ‘Don’t create him, he is full of lies!’ Justice said, ‘Let him be created, he will seek justice.’ Peace said, ‘Don’t create him, he is full of strife.’” Imagine if you were brought as an expert witness or a juror to this Heavenly debate. The prosecutor would show you in fast motion, a digest of human history. The depths of evil it has reached, the abysses of malevolence – you too would sigh and say, ‘better he not be created.’ The defense would then bring contrary evidence: moments of extreme sacrifice and kindness, everyday ongoing grace and care, peaks of creativity, of cooperation, advances in medicine, technology, legislation... It would probably not be enough to erase the impression of the horrors you had just seen. But G-d did not serve in these proceedings as an objective judge. G-d acted as an interested party. He takes a deep interest in this problematic creature, for his struggles, failures, and achievements. G-d wants him.
This year I walk with a new understanding: G-d says, “Let us make man” and addresses us, mankind. He calls on us to turn this flesh and blood, endowed with life, into a human being. Imagine Michelangelo’s statue “The Slave”. It’s a sculpture, partially carved, in which a human figure is seen, half sculpted, trying to get out of the marble it’s carved of, to break free and discover itself. Part man, part clod. Think of that image as you read the following description, based on Rabbi Shlomo Wilk’s introduction to Rabbi Kook’s Orot HaTeshuva: The Jewish people have historically stood as a sculpturer holding a scalpel trying to carve in stone the man hiding within it. The person hiding in the stone does not always know he is being looked for, sometimes he prefers to stay in stone rather than be discovered. He is often convinced that he has already discovered himself, and no more burdensome stone remains. This process of carving shapes every aspect of the living
and inanimate world. Secretly, without our knowing, G-d also stands and carves, continues to create a world out of stone – a world we call names and give meaning to. Through Teshuva – that preceded creation itself – man returns to his nature and returns to G-d. Through this project that seeks man who will seek G-d. The Jewish description of creation is an endless process, continuous and renewing, in which G-d turns to man, offering him a partnership in creation, in processes of completion and repairing. G-d invites man to take part, to bear responsibility, to participate with Him in creation. Discovering, developing, and protecting his world, his society, himself. Rabbanit Rachelle Fraenkel is Yoetzet Halacha and Senior Scholar at Nishmat, and Head of Hilcheta advanced Halacha studies at Matan. She is a member of the Mizrachi Speakers Bureau (www.mizrachi.org/speakers).
A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE
First, be a Mensch RABBI GOODMAN Shidduchim usually revolve around the Midas touch (money) and the Middos touch (character traits). As well as extensive investigation and research into how the prospective young man expects to support a family, the question of “Does he have good Middos?” is also thrown in for good measure. Although the sentiment behind the question is understood, the question itself makes little sense. “Good” Middos and “bad” Middos do not exist. Middos exist. How a person manages his Middos is what counts. The Rambam in Hilchos Teshuva (7:3) writes that more than we must repent for choosing to perform the wrong actions, we must repent for choosing to misuse our character traits. It requires much greater effort and application to extricate oneself from enslavement to anger, jealousy, or lust, than from enslavement to stealing, immoral conduct or murder. Considering the Rambam’s ruling – that
one must repent more for traits than actions - Rabbi Eliyahu Lopian (18761970), fondly known as Reb Elya, asks why the Torah fails to devote the same type of significant attention to the subject of character traits as it does to the rest of the Mitzvos. Reb Elya explains that perfection of one’s conduct is so obvious and integral to being a Torah observant Jew, it need not be spelled out. Although the contract for building a house might not specify digging its foundations, nobody in their right mind (unless they had initially planned to build a castle on a cloud) would suggest drawing up a separate contract for the foundations. Similarly, one who wants to live life as a Torah observant Jew first must obviously behave like a mensch. Unfortunately, many educational systems consider learning how to use Sin (the mathematical type), Cos and Tan more important than learning how to behave like a decent human being. Imagine
being taught at a young and impressionable age how being human means being a CEO, in charge of an energetic staff of character traits who are forever trying to take over the reins; and channeling their strengths and weaknesses for the greater good. Imagine being told that failing to exert control over yourself just means that your character traits have staged a coup and kicked you out of office and it is now up to you to establish an anti-coup and regain your power. How different society would be! Shabbos Bereishis marks the beginning of our renewed journey through Torah. The year ahead holds infinite opportunity for strengthening and intensifying our connection with Hashem. We learn from Reb Elya that our first and most crucial step in this adventure is to ensure that we set sail as decent human beings. Only then do we have a chance of reaping all the spiritual benefits and making the year ahead an invaluable and unforgettable one.

It’s always great to begin again. And Bereishis is a particularly action-packed and exciting book to study. People of all ages relish its stories, its messages, its happy moments, and its sad ones. This week’s Sidra spans 1500 years. From Day 1 of creation all the way until the birth of Noach. First, the Torah describes the 6 days of creation and the 7th day which was Shabbat. We then learn of the terible mistake Adam and his wife Chava made by eating from the one tree they were not allowed to! So much is allowed for us in life yet we often wish for what is not allowed... Then, the older son of Adam, called Kayin is filled with jealousy of his brother and actually kills him. Finally, we are taught of the ten generations from Adam all the way till Noach. People had begun worshipping idols and doing other sins, except for Noach and in his merit the world would be saved (in next week’s sidra). Sometimes, all it takes is one person to right many wrongs...

Bereishit
In a nutshell Welcome back to a fresh start! We begin the Torah once again with Bereishis! The Torah gives a description of the very beginning of time. All - religious or not - agree today that the world had a beginning, and we can see from the complex design of the creation that the world had a Creator. The Torah describes creation as taking 6 days and to remember that, for six days a week we engage in activity and on Shabbat, we rest as did G-d in His Own way, rest on Shabbat. On the first day, Hashem created light and darkness and uttered the famous words, “Let there be light”! This light, we are told, was hidden away until the Moshiach comes. On the second day, the heavens were separated from the earth. On the third day the vegetation was created, with land masses forming. On the fourth day it was time for the sun, moon and stars to be set and on the fifth day, the fish, bird and reptiles. On the sixth day of creation, Hashem created animals
and man. Formed from the dust of the ground the first man was named “Adam”. Hashem saw that it was no good for man to live alone and therefore created a wife for him. She was named Chavah. Hashem places Adam and Chavah into the Garden and Eden and informs them that they may eat the fruit from any tree they wished…besides for one. The Tree of Knowledge was off limits. The famous snake, , which could then walk and talk and do a host of other things, was jealous of the marriage which was enjoyed by Adam and Chavah, approached Chavah and convinced her that it would be ok for her to eat from the forbidden fruit. When she did so, she approached Adam and convinced him to do the same. Now that both had eaten, they feared Hashem. Their fate was sealed though. Man had committed his first sin, disregarding boundaries and disobeying the word of Hashem and was therefore subject to punishment.
Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.
Adam and Chavah were both banished from the Garden of Eden and Adam was cursed with having to “sweat” in order to feed himself (and his family) and Chavah with physical suffering and difficult childrearing. Adam and Chavah had two children at first – Kayin and Hevel. Both of the children wanted to bring an offering to Hashem, but when Hevel brought a more choice offering and Kayin a stingy one, it was obvious to them that Hashem had accepted Hevel’s over Kayin. Kayin was very angry (anger which stemmed from jealousy) and did the unthinkable – he killed his brother. He too was punished, but his ultimate punishment was postponed for seven generations, when his descendant accidentally killed him. Finally, the Sidra lists the ten generations between Adam and Noach. They were in decline throughout and their warnings to repent fell on deaf ears. This leads to next week’s Sidra where we learn all about the epic flood.

will be hard-fought. The Baggies have shipped more goals than anyone else and Sean Dyche’s team could well have the experience to exploit their frailties and get a first win of the campaign. Sheffield United have a massive clash against Fulham and something must give when the bottom two meet at Bramall Lane. A win for either team would boost their confidence. Both teams freshened up their squads before the end of the transfer window.
