REPORT ON LABOUR ANTISEMITISM

Donald Trump

BY DAVID SAFFER US President Donald Trump trails in the polls with days to go in the US presidential election on Tuesday. The battlelines have been drawn and TV debates are over; now the serious wall-to-wall campaigning is on to decide the 46th Presidency of the United States. Biden heads the polls but Trump stunned the US public four years ago. Can he do it again?

Joe Biden

The White House race depends on key ‘swing’ states. Results in Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Arizona are crucial and will provide a winner in terms of an electoral college majority. For most Israelis there is only one winner and that is Trump who has pulled off a number of extraordinary feats including the historic US Embassy move to Jerusalem. and his role in the recent triple UAE, Bahrain and Sudan accords cannot be underestimated. Rumours of Oman and particularly Saudi Arabia have not gone unnoticed in the Israel media. Israel eases travel ban on non-Israeli citizens BY SIMCHA ABIR Israel has eased its travel ban on non-Israeli citizens entering the country. The measure is for business travellers deemed vital to Israel’s economy and not possible by virtual meetings. The sanction had been in place since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Businesspeople can now apply for a permit to enter Israel from ‘green’ countries. Visitors will not need to present a negative coronavirus test or enter quarantine on arrival in Israel. They will also not have to self-isolate for seven days. The Economy Ministry announced the welcome update that comes on the back of a number of normalisation agreements with Arab countries, which will increase flights between the nations. “Entry to Israel will be possible only for visitors whose contribution to Israeli companies or the economy is vital and only in situations where it is not possible to conduct virtual meetings,” the ministry noted in a statement. “This is in order to allow the continued proper functioning of Israeli companies and

to prevent damage to them or the economy during the coronavirus pandemic.” An addendum to the latest policy is that anyone on a connecting flight via a “red” country can enter Israel without quarantining if they did PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA not leave an airport in the ‘red’ country and was in transit less than 12 hours. The Economy Ministry, Health Ministry, Foreign Ministry and Interior Ministry agreed the plan. Israel introduced the Green list in August. Latest data illustrates under 30 countries on the list which is updated periodically. Details are on the Ministry of Health website. Green countries include Australia, Canada, Cuba, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Rwanda, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay. Greece and Italy are expected to move into the “red” category this week, the United Kingdom and United States was placed in this section last week.

Emirates Palace Hotel

BY BELLA WAXLER Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism has signed a 12-month agreement with the Emirates Agency for Kosher Certification (EAKC). UAE’s flagship Emirates Palace is the first hotel to offer a kosher certified kitchen. Rabbi Levi Duchman heads up the certification project that certifies Emirate’s hotels. Kosher food options will include room service and restaurant menus. This initiative follows Israel and the UAE’s historic peace deal, the signing of the Abraham Accords in Washington last month and first official delegation to Israel. The two nations landmark ceremony at Ben-Gurion Airport heralded a bilateral meeting where commercial deals were signed on aviation, investment, science and technology. The first visa exemption agreement with an Arab state was also signed. UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan called on Israel to open an Emirati Embassy and an Israeli Embassy in Abu Dhabi as soon as possible in a letter to Ashkenazi. The UAE delegation returned to Abu Dhabi with Israeli businessmen, tourism executives and journalists following the ceremony and meetings. In related news, an Etihad commercial flight with 58 passengers landed at Ben Gurion for the first time earlier last week. Etihad marked the flight by launching a dedicated Hebrew website, a first for an Arab airline. Also available in English, the site includes an Abu Dhabi destination guide.

In terms of travellers to the UAE wanting kosher food, all hotels and outlets in the capital must assign a kitchen for kosher food preparation with clear labelling on mens. Following news of the kosher certification, Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, Tourism and Marketing, reportedly said, “One of the distinguishable aspects of Abu Dhabi culture is the diversity and inclusivity that tourists can experience in all aspects of their visit, from international cuisine offerings to cultural artefacts from all around the world. We look forward to welcoming Jewish tourists from around the world to our city.” “We are excited to be part of history as we assist the hotels to provide kosher options that will strengthen tourism,” Rabbi Duchman, reportedly added. “This initiative is all part of the Abu Dhabi Government vision for the Emirate to be a home for all people of all cultures and religious backgrounds and a true beacon of light to all of our neighbours.” He continued, “When Abu Dhabi welcomes people from across the world, we will make sure that our guests will have the ultimate comfort and be fully welcomed. If our guests require kosher food, we will make sure we have kosher of the highest quality available. “This is something beyond tolerance, it is much deeper and more special, that makes Abu Dhabi so special. Our team here at EAKC will continue to work closely with all food establishments, to assist and enable them to serve kosher food at the highest and best quality possible.” EAKC was established this year to guarantee observance of kosher cuisine standards. With one voice, we demanded justice. Campaign Against Antisemitism referred the Labour Party to the EHRC because Jew-hatred under Corbyn was out of control. In 2015, a backbench MP named Jeremy Corbyn stood to become leader of the Labour Party. We saw him for what he was. Campaign Against Antisemitism has been at the forefront of exposing Labour’s antisemitism in the media ever since. For years we uncovered evidence and spoke out. In 2016, following the Chakrabarti whitewash, we were the first to declare Labour institutionally antisemitic. As we exposed Mr Corbyn’s past, in 2018 we became the only organisation to call him an antisemite. We demanded justice on the front pages and demonstrated in our thousands. But there was no justice. We were told that holding Labour to account legally would be impossible. We disagreed. In 2018, Campaign Against Antisemitism referred the Labour Party to the Equality and Human Rights Commission and became the complainant in its unprecedented statutory investigation. The Jewish Labour Movement and Labour Against Antisemitism Ltd made further submissions which supported our referral. Over many months, Campaign Against Antisemitism’s investigators and lawyers submitted hundreds of pages of evidence and argument to the EHRC in pursuit of justice.

BBC Radio 4 recalls Rabin assassination Jonathan Freedland marks the 25th anniversary of former Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination on BBC Radio 4 next week. ‘The Most Successful Assassination in History’ sees the esteemed journalist interview Rabin’s bodyguard, his closest political adviser who was with him as he died and grand-daughter whose eulogy moved the world. They are unified in their belief that the killer achieved his aims, stopping Yitzhak Rabin z”l peace between Israel and the Palestinians, making it the most successful assassination in history. Rabin had shaken hands with Palestinian leader Yasser

Arafat at the White House on a landmark occasion. By 1995, Rabin was preparing to handover territory in the West Bank and Gaza. On November 4, Rabin addressed a peace rally in Tel Aviv in support of the Oslo Accords, joining in with the crowd as they sang Shir l’Shalom. As he left the stage, Yigal Amir, a Jewish extremist fired two bullets into his back. Rabin was replaced within months by Binyamin Netanyahu. EHRC report on Labour institutional anti-Semitism is due out today CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 the report is for the UK’s Jewish community. Gideon Falter, Campaign Against Antisemitism, Chief Executive, is under no illusions as to the significance of the report. He noted, “Under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, the Labour Party became institutionally anti-Semitic and drove almost half of British Jews to consider leaving the country. For the once fiercely anti-racist Labour Party to have descended to this appalling state is a travesty and an indelible stain on the Party and those within it who stood by and let anti-Semitism take hold.” He added, “The Labour Party

must be forever changed after this episode so that this can never happen again. Those responsible remain in the Party and must be held to account if Sir Keir Starmer is to tear antisemitism ‘out by its roots’, as he has promised. The EHRC’s report is a pivotal moment in this corrective process, and any recommendations that it makes must be adopted by Labour.” Falter’s comments came shortly after Corbyn’s former chief of staff Karie Murphy said she was proud of Labour’s record. Writing in The Guardian on Monday, Murphy offered an astounding viewpoint. “Under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership,

IDF holds military exercise BY SIMCAH ABIR Israel Defence Forces held a large-scale military exercise at the northern border last Sunday. Part of the IDF’s 2020 training programme, “Lethal Arrow” drills are scheduled to end today. Defence Minister Benny Gantz, speaking at the border, said the exercise was “critical” for maintaining operational capabilities of forces. Hezbollah is based at the border where a conflict could occur. Gantz reportedly noted that Hezbollah was “Lebanon’s problem, not Israel’s”. Lebanon would ultimately “pay the price” for any aggression coming out of the country, he said. Gantz added, “We are here, prepared for the moment that I hope never comes. “The defence establishment needs to guarantee our security 365 days a year, on every front. The IDF’s preparedness is an essential component in Israel’s security. I commend the broad-scale training exercise taking place currently throughout the country.” Gantz had a stark warning for Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip. “Our enemies do not rest, not in the north, not in the south, not near nor far, and we

will continue to defend the people of Israel, continue to deter our enemies, continue to impede their expansion, and stay prepared for any scenario,’ he reportedly noted. Gantz welcomed Prof. Nachman Ash’s appointment as Israel’s coronavirus czar. “The Defence Ministry and IDF take a full part in the battle against coronavirus, this is an opportunity to congratulate Prof. Ash,” he said. “Nachman and I have known each other for years and he will get all the assistance he needs from the defence establishment so that he can succeed in his role. We will keep bolstering the virus response, we will keep defending our borders, and we will keep building our forces. That is our job.” Tasks were scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic ‘Lethal Arrow’ is the largest IDF drill annually and includes thousands of troops from different branches of the military.

But Boris Epshteyn, a strategic advisor to Trump campaign and Jewish Voices for Trump co-chair believes Trump votes are plentiful. “There’s a hidden Trump vote nationally and more generally among Americans,” he reportedly said. And American Jews are well aware what Trump has done for Israel. He told the Herald, “This president has been the greatest champion and friend to the State of Israel in the history of this country, and I would include Harry Truman in that, who recognised Israel in 1948.” He added, “You look across all those achievements, and I’m telling you with full confidence that the Jewish American voter is going to come out for this president.” Epshteyn’s viewpoint is backed by plenty

of support in Israel where around 300,000 US citizens live. A procession of two dozen cars decked with American flags and Trump 2020 banners drove from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem for a solidarity rally outside the US Embassy on Tuesday. “More and more people are wakening and seeing who Donald Trump truly is - that he’s for the people and for the Jewish people,” Jacob Lieberman, who wore a Trump 2020 baseball hat, told reporters. “What he has done for the Jewish people, there are no words, no words to explain. Exceptional president.” Republicans Overseas Israel organised the event. Only five days remain for non-stop viewpoints and opinions globally but the talking will soon be over.

anti-Semites were removed from the Labour Party more quickly, transparently and effectively than ever before. As his former chief of staff, I’m proud of that record,” she wrote. Murphy did accept anti-Semitism “reared its head” among a small minority and the party was slow to deal with it effectively. Jewish Labour Movement has lambasted Murphy’s comments as “shameful” as its members faced continued “discrimination, harassment and victimisation”. “At no point was there genuine remorse, improvements to the system, or any real progress in the number of cases handled or outcomes,” he reportedly said. “Their only success on anti-Semitism was the rigour with which they protected their political allies, downplayed the issue and gaslit those who spoke up against it. Smearing the pain

of our members and the wider Jewish community as part of a ‘highly politicised media campaign’ is shameful.” CAA began taking action against anti-Semitism in the Party as early as 2015. They were the first to call Labour institutionally anti-Semitic after the Chakrabarti whitewash, and in 2018, were the first to describe Corbyn as an anti-Semite. Thousands attended CAA rallies demanding justice, but Labour refused to reform its disciplinary processes. CAA duly referred the Labour Party to the EHRC as action needed to be taken. Following hundreds of pages of legal argument and submissions from its investigators and counsel, CAA became the complainant in the EHRC’s unprecedented full statutory investigation into Labour over anti-Semitism.

Neo-Nazi guilty of plotting to blow Colorado synagogue

Rabbi and Ronny team up for football chat

BY BELLA WAXLER A neo-Nazi has pleaded guilty to intentionally plotting to blow up Temple Emanuel Synagogue in Pueblo, Colorado. White supremacist Richard Holzer, 28, stated throughout the trial his hatred of Jewish people according to prosecutors. Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Civil Rights Division said the defendant tried to orchestrate a plan to bomb the synagogue to remove the Jewish presence from his local community. Officials reported Holzer advocated acts of extreme violence across his social media accounts, particularly against Jewish people. It was also recorded he visited the synagogue to taunt congregants. According to the FBI, Holzer told undercover agents he wished to threaten Jews. Authorities described his motivation and ideology as unambiguously anti-Semitic. In a plea agreement, Holzer pleaded guilty to intentionally attempting to obstruct persons in the enjoyment of their free exercise of religious beliefs through force and the attempted use of explosives and fire, and an attempt to damage and destroy a building by means of fire and explosives. “The defendant attempted to bomb the Temple Emanuel Synagogue to drive people of Jewish faith out of his community,” Dreiband reportedly said. “Violence motivated by religious intolerance strikes at the heart of a free society,

Sentencing is set for January 2021 in a District Court.

Board slams Plaid Cymru over Sahar al-Faifi ruling The Board of Deputies has called on Plaid Cymru to reflect on a decision not to sanction Sahar al-Faifi after investigations into anti-Semitic rhetoric. Sheila Gewolb, BoD Senior Vice President and Laurence Kahn, South Wales Jewish Representative Council, issued a statement after meeting Plaid Cymru Chair Alun Ffred Jones and Chief Executive Gareth Chubb. Sahar al-Faifi was suspended and re-admitted to the party after investigations into a “clear case” of conspiratorial anti-Semitic rhetoric, they noted. Plaid Cymru is to review its disciplinary practices. “It is critical it gets this right, both for the Welsh Jewish community and to safeguard its own internal culture,” commented Gewold and Kahn.

Albania has adopted the International Definition of Anti-Semitism last week BY DAVID SAFFER Balkan Parliaments attended the first Balkans Forum Against Anti-Semitism this week. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, European Parliament President David Sassoli and Yariv Levin, Speaker of the Knesset were amongst keynote speakers at the online landmark event. Key delegates included Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama, Speakers of Parliament from Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia alongside senior officials from the United Nations, United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Israel. Balkan countries have united to help destroy anti-Semitism and create more tolerant societies. The Albanian Parliament in partnership with the Combat Anti-Semitism Movement and Jewish Agency for Israel organised the event, which followed Albania adopting the IHRA working definition of anti-Semitism last week. Campaign Against Antisemitism welcomed the move. Albania is the first Muslim-majority country to adopt the global definition. “It is good news that we, the Albanians and the peoples of the Western Balkans, a region that has suffered more than any other part of the world, the consequences of ethno-centrist and religious-centrist views and attitudes, join this emancipatory action of contemporary civilisation, the fight against anti-Semitism,” Gramoz Ruci, Albania Parliament speaker reportedly said. “All nations that throughout history have protected Jews from extermination and support them today against stigma have a right to be proud,” he added. “But we Albanians have more reasons to be proud, because Albania is the only country in Europe where all Jews were taken under protection and rescued during World War II. Our homeland, Albania, in difficult times has served as a substitute soil for Jews.” In other CAA news, Hastings Borough Council has adopted the IHRA definition.

Israeli and Sudanese representatives are set to discuss agriculture, technology, aviation, migration and trade. Israeli flights are already able to use Sudanese airspace for a number of routes. Following the announcement, Netanyahu welcomed the news. “Today Khartoum says yes to peace with Israel, yes to recognition of Israel and yes to normalisation with Israel,” he reportedly noted. “This is truly a new age,” Netanyahu added. It was possible, we believed in it.” Noting the deal was good for security and the economy, Netanyahu added the map of the Middle East was changing as Israel could fly east over Saudi Arabia and west over Sudan. He reportedly explained, “This is an immense change. It is a change that changes the situation. Here Israel was completely isolated. Israel is now connecting to the rest of the world, thanks to our consistent policy. I said that there would be more countries and here is another country. I tell you even now, there will be more countries.” The UAE, hailed Sudan’s decision to start relations with Israel as “an important step to boost security and prosperity in the region”. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, also welcomed the deal. “I value all efforts aimed at achieving regional stability and peace,” Sisi wrote on Twitter. World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder backed the announcement. “Sudan has undergone a profound transformation over the past few years, from a haven for terrorists to a constructive member of the family of nations,” he noted. “This transformation is the result of the determination and fortitude of Sudanese citizens, who are now laying the groundwork for a future in which their country will enjoy the blessing of peace and prosperity.“ Lauder praised Trump’s administration for facilitating another important step towards a new Middle East following Israel’s agreements with the UAE and Bahrain.

Warsaw ghetto survivor Ben-Zion Hadar laid to rest BY SIMCHA ABIR The funeral of Holocaust survivor Ben-Zion Hadar took place at Zichron Yaakov cemetery on Sunday. Ben-Zion was being treated at Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera. Born in Nazi-occupied Warsaw in 1936, Ben-Zion miraculously escaped the city’s ghetto when he was six years old.

The youngest of a group of children who sold cigarettes to the Gestapo, his remarkable story came to light in a book “The Cigarette Sellers of Three Crosses Square” by Joseph Ziemian. Zeiman met the group in the city’s Three Crosses Square as a member of the Jewish Underground in Poland. To survive, the youngsters decided not to speak Yiddish to each other and sold

Israeli and Sudanese representatives are set to discuss agriculture, technology, aviation, migration and trade. There was now “shifting societal attitudes” towards Israel and Jews in the region, he noted. “I hope that this move will encourage other Arab and Muslim governments to follow their lead and pursue peace,” Lauder added. WJC is ready to work with the Sudanese government to “weave Jewish voices and experiences” into Sudan’s already rich and diverse cultural tapestry. Shortly before the deal was announced, Trump notified Congress that he would rescind Sudan’s designation as a ‘State sponsor of terrorism’. The White House called the move a “pivotal turning point” for Khartoum. Since the deal, Israel has sent $5m of wheat to Sudan, who utilise two million tonnes annually according to official figures. Sudan depends on imports. Israel’s Foreign Ministry monitored thousands of ecstatic Sudanese posts on Arabic language social media accounts following the announcement. Yonatan Gonen, Arabic-language New Media Section head at the Foreign Ministry described the response as “overwhelming”. “We had a hard time coping with the

flood of excited posts from Sudanese residents over the weekend. For many of them, this is a welcome move,” Gonen reportedly said. “In fact, in recent months there has been an increase in the number of positive and sympathetic reactions towards Israel from the people of Sudan.” There were negative posts citing a “peace on paper” between governments. Palestinian leaders unsurprisingly condemned the deal as it had with the UAE and Bahrain. “No one has the right to speak on behalf of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian cause,” Mahmoud Abbas’s office said in a statement Hamas labelled the deal a “political sin” that benefitted Netanyahu. Some political factions in Sudan rejected the deal including the National Consensus Forces Alliance, which is part of the Freedom and Change alliance. The Islamist faction Popular Congress Party also condemned the move. Iran’s foreign ministry described the deal as “phoney”. In related news, Israel’s cabinet ratified the peace deal with the UAE, which has been approved by the Knesset. The Knesset will also ratify ties with Bahrain.

cigarettes to the Gestapo as they would not believe Jews would be brave enough to pull off such a stunt. Prof. Havi Dreifuss, a Holocaust historian at Tel Aviv University, reportedly said, “The survival of a group of Jewish children in central Warsaw, which was full of German soldiers, was made possible not only by the daring of those children, but also by their impressive solidarity, which was expressed in their concern for the late Ben-Zion who was the youngest of the group.” Hadar kept in touch with group members who moved around the world after the war. He is survived by his wife Orit, two sons and a daughter.

Ash appointed coronavirus czar BY DAVID SAFFER Prof. Nachman Ash has been appointed Israel’s new coronavirus czar. Ash’s appointment comes as Covid-19 cases have fallen to the lowest rate since June as a result of the recent lockdown when schools and most businesses closed. Latest Health Ministry figures report 844 cases, 453 patients in serious condition in hospital with 196 on ventilators. To date, there have been 2,483 fatalities. Ultra-orthodox communities have been among the hardest hit throughout the pandemic but in a ray of hope on Tuesday news came that the status of Bnei Brak had moved to “green”. Back in April at the onset of the deadly virus, just under 40% of its 75,000 residents were reported to be infected. “This morning we mark another significant milestone in our fight against the coronavirus,” Bnei Brak Mayor Avraham Rubinstein reportedly said. “The residents of Bnei Brak are already learning battle strategies against the virus. With the help of heaven, we have worked together with them in order to defeat the second wave.” Prof. Ash succeeds Prof. Ronni Gamzu in the czar post. Gamzu took up the position in August knowing he had to return as head of Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Medical Center on November 13. A transition period will take place. Ash, a former head of the IDF medical corps, graduated at Tel Aviv University and completed a Master’s degree in Medical Informatics at Harvard University. A professor at Ariel University, he has served the Health Ministry and is currently Maccabi Healthcare Services deputy CEO. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coronavirus cabinet has approved reopening primary school’s next week subject to national morbidity rates. Grades 1-2 will attend half classes with afternoon day care, grades 3-4 in capsules on alternate days, all grades per health Ministry conditions. A number of local and regional governments announced they would open schools for grades 1-4 on a five-day week but don’t have the budget and teachers’ unions are against the move. Netanyahu has announced there is no funding for extra schooling due to the NIS 6 billion cost. Ministers also discussed reopening small businesses and high street shops next week, a move Gamzu had already spoken about. “We are talking about the resumption of ‘one-on-one’ treatments, including barbers, beauticians and alternative medicine,” he reportedly noted. “We are very sensitive about the situation of small businesses in the country, and it is impossible to really ignore the great difficulty they are facing.” Gamzu added, “We want to be careful because I do not want to bring Israel back to where it was at the end of the first wave.” Health Minister Yuli Edelstein and Deputy Minister of Health Yoav Kish also cautioned about repeating past mistakes, “The Ministry of Health has made it clear

Ash’s appointment comes as Covid-19 cases have fallen to the lowest rate since June as a result of the recent lockdown that opening retail trade in parallel to the education system in grades one through four could lead to too heavy a price in morbidity,” Kish told Kan Radio. Netanyahu has consistently stated Israel will take a measured approach and in an address this week, noted the level of morbidity was lower than most European countries. “Unfortunately, the second wave is raging there and hitting them like it is also hitting us,” he reportedly explained. “I hope that these countries will succeed in lowering morbidity like we have. (But) we will be here only if we adhere to the rules.” He added, “If morbidity comes down, the restrictions will come down. If morbidity goes up, the restrictions will come back. We have no choice. This is the only way to ensure life. I know that it is difficult. I know that there are difficulties for the self-employed. There are difficulties for businesses. We must do this but not at the expense of life. We will do what is necessary.” Netanyahu concluded, “What is necessary at the moment is simply the ability to put politics aside and put the State of Israel first. To all of my political rivals, I say, we will have enough time for politics. Now it is necessary to concentrate on one thing only, mutual

guarantee, responsibility because together we will defeat this pandemic.” In related news, the Health Ministry has called on all teaching staff to be tested for COVID-19 as part of ‘Operation Education Shield’. “Planning and coordination work has taken place to improve the ‘return to routine’ outline led by the Ministry, Education Ministry and local government centre to ensure (the) safe return of children and staff to school,” a spokesman said in a statement. Gamzu warned on Monday restrictions could not be eased unless 50,000 tests are carried out daily. “I urge every citizen to get tested even on the slightest suspicion that you were infected,” he reportedly said. “The tests are accessible and the results are ready within hours.” He added, “Children are often asymptomatic and that leads to the next stage of symptomatic cases in adults followed by hospitalisations.” Gamzu confirmed the Health Ministry was capable of carrying out 70,000 daily tests increasing to 100,000 tests. Of all industries severely hit by the pandemic, tourism ranks among the highest. In a demonstration of progress, Israel’s

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

cabinet has designated Eilat and the Dead Sea region ‘green’ tourism areas. Visitors must present an up-to-date negative Covid-19 test. Under an Israeli Tourism Ministry proposal, guided by Health Ministry and Public Security, hotels would reopen along with businesses supplying services for guests. “The outline gives an immediate response to 30 percent of the tourism industry, in special geographical areas of Israel, Eilat and the Dead Sea,” Tourism Minister Orit Farkash-Hacohen reportedly confirmed. Government approval is at the “first stage”. “There needs to be more legislation in the Knesset and the development of a complex mechanism that can be put into practice,” noted Farkash-Hacohen. “There is no doubt in my mind that this process is not a replacement for the need to open and rehabilitate the entire tourism industry, and the immediate opening of rural tourism in Israel,” she added. Whilst news has been more upbeat, medical experts have warned that around 20% of Israelis may suffer from emotional and psychological distress as a result of the pandemic. Dr. Tzvi Fishel, Israel Psychiatric Association head, noted the possibility. “You cannot meet with friends, go to the movies, see a play or conduct a normal life routine,” he reportedly said. “Normalcy is a calming thing and once it is gone, you cannot properly cope with stress and pressure.” Psychiatric experts had estimated a million Israelis would need help, but that figure has risen dramatically to over 1.5 million.

THE ISRAEL PROPERTY BUYERS GUIDE Welcome to the CurrencyTransfer.com guide to buying a property in Israel. We passionately think that buying a home in Israel is exciting, fulfilling, and perhaps Zionistic adventure. We’re here to help. The Legal Angle

The Mortgage

There are many nuggets in this category, as legal representation for property purchase is absolutely key in Israel. There is no “standard” transaction and having someone experienced in your corner batting for your interests is extremely valuable. The local market is culturally, and structurally unique, and we find that time and again foreign clients need to adjust their mindset and expectations to optimize their acquisition in Israel. Having the right legal advice is the best catalyst for a successful acquisition.

The most common mistake foreign clients usually make is to compare the real estate and mortgage industry between their home country and Israel. There are similarities but also huge differences. For example, a mortgage refusal in Israel is usually not considered as a reason to cancel a real estate deal.

The Basics: Counting Rooms Understanding Exchange Rates The three major types of transactions: Unfortunately there have been cases where clients have flown in to see a pre-prepared list of properties, only to discover that in Israel the living room is also counted as a room, and hence what they thought were a list of 4 bedroom properties, was actually a list of 3 bedroom (plus living room) properties. Also, “finished to a very high level” often means something different in Israel than in New York, London or Amsterdam. The standards and norms of where the customer is coming from will play a huge part in preparing a list of suitable properties.

£500,000 2,090,450

HIGH – 4.4134

£500,000 2,206,700

Think about this for a moment. A mere 4% shift in the currency exchange rates on a £500,000 property can at best, make the difference in the choice of furniture, and at worst, mean your dream home is no longer within budget. From key macro-driven interest rate decisions to political earthquakes like Donald Trump and Brexit, keeping abreast of market movements is essential. We help you navigate and budget every step of the way and ensure that the market fluctuations don’t get in the way of a once in a lifetime adventure. Locking in a rate today can give you peace of mind when purchasing your dream home in Israel. Take the example of the Morris family who is buying a house in Netanya and are required to make their final balance transfer in a month and a half. The current GBPILS exchange rate is attractive, within budget and the family decides they are eager to guarantee the Sterling cost of their property abroad. Non-Bank Foreign Exchange specialists will allow you to fix the GBP to ILS exchange rate now, giving you the comfort of knowing the exact cost of your property, regardless of what happens with fluctuations in the exchange rate. Forward contracts are the perfect method of budgeting and staying in control.

1. An existing property The agreement will be with the current owner. The terms of payment are to be negotiated. A common transaction would be one where there are 3 – 4 equal payments from signature to completion.

2. New property under construction The agreement will be with the developer. Payments terms will be spread over the construction phase. The down payment could be up to 25% with 10% left for hand over and the balance of 65% payable in equal quarterly payments throughout the process of construction.

3. Rights to erect a new property in a “Purchasers’ Group” Namely a number of parties who cooperate together to buy and develop a property, and then contracting themselves, as a group, with third parties to construct the development. The group will usually pay for the purchase of the land upfront, construction costs will be paid over the building phase in accordance with terms agreed by the group members in a cooperation agreement between them.

A range of currency options First and foremost recognize that the mortgage options are larger and more complex in Israel than in the rest of the world. Foreign buyers are able to take advantage of a range of mortgages in different currencies, including Israeli Shekel, Euro, US Dollar, and British Pound.

Mortgage provider options Prices between different lending banks very much depend on the clientele they target. It will usually vary according to the client profile and lender’s risk appetite. Be aware interest rates are currently higher in Israel than in Europe or North America for different reasons such as the cost of funds to the banks, the level of competition in the mortgage market and finally the disequilibrium between supply and demand of real estate and mortgages.

Factor In Total Costs Be aware of the additional expenses for a real estate purchase, including amongst others: Legal fees, Bank Arrangement Fees, Surveyor, Title registration, Purchase Taxes, Estate Agent, etc. Depending on your status, a good rule of thumb is to expect additional unanticipated costs of 10-15% of the purchase price. To conclude, never stretch yourself to the limit based on the purchase price alone, given all the additional payments that need to be made.

SHAME ON YOU, BBC Dear Editor, What was heralded as a well researched programme on the history of the alphabet turned out to be a ‘carefully crafted politically correct’ essay on the history of writing. How they carefully managed to ignore or neglect the vital contribution of the Jews was masterly. The only concession was a quickly uttered remark about ‘palaeo-Hebrew’. They completely ignored the fact that the Greeks took the old Hebrew alphabet (via the the Phoenicians, close friends and neighbours of the Jews) and turned it back to front, mirror image style, so that they could write it left to right. The reason for Hebrew being written right to

left because originally the writing process was chiselled. The Greeks took on the Hebrew names of the letters for their own, hence alpha, beta, gamma, delta, which have no intrinsic meaning in Greek, as they have in Hebrew. What showed the shameful effort of the BBC to (I assume) appease their Egyptian hosts, is the complete absence of Hebrew writers in a hall full of calligraphists of every type: Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Roman, Indian etc. I show here an example of the three main western alphabets, and how they were derived from the Hebrew language. Join AJEX at the online 2020 Remembrance Ceremony AJEX launch a Campaign of Remembrance announcing news on the AJEX annual parade in the current circumstances – a major event in the Jewish calendar. Due to the unprecedented nature of the global pandemic, the AJEX 87th Annual Parade and Ceremony at The Cenotaph regrettably cannot take place in the usual way. Whilst the ceremony cannot take place in person, a poignant Remembrance Service will take place online on Sunday 15th November at 2.30pm. The continuation of the AJEX Annual Ceremony is essential to remind both Jews and non-Jews, of the vital role played by our community in British life and to honour the immense contribution of Jewish ex Service men and women. The annual Cenotaph parade has historically been a major event in the AJEX calendar and in addition that of the entire Anglo-Jewish community since the 1930’s. Last year over 2,000 people attended.

AJEX National Chairman, Mike Bluestone says, “It is our sacred duty to ensure that we always remember and commemorate our Jewish brothers and sisters who gave their all, not only in two World Wars, but also in subsequent

and contemporary conflicts in the service of HM Armed Forces. It is of course, with a sense of deep sadness that we cannot be together this year at the Cenotaph in the usual way. However, despite challenging circumstances together with the AJEX team, scores of members and volunteers have worked tirelessly to plan an online event which includes contributions from a wide range of community figures, of all ages. As Jews all over the world show resilience in such challenging times, AJEX too, approaches the pandemic with the same vigor and attitude – we would not allow this to detract us from honouring our fallen heroes, so please join us on Sunday 15th November to remember and never forget”. AJEX is also marking the day in other ways and demonstrating their ongoing commitment to Jewish veterans and serving community members, passing the legacy onto the next generation. On Shabbat 14th November, AJEX are asking for Synagogues, religious services and individuals across the UK to say a prayer of Remembrance that Shabbat. Rabbi (Major) Reuben Livingstone CF LLM, Senior Jewish Chaplain to HM Armed Forces

and Chaplain to AJEX says, “In light of what is continuing to unfold around the world, it is more important than ever to ensure we can all come together. The first AJEX parade took place to combat antisemitism, we can draw strength from the resilience of past generations and the AJEX Shabbat gives us the opportunity to come together and remember the courage and sacrifice of all who served.” Join AJEX in remembering the sacrifice and dedication of our ex Servicemen and Women on Sunday 15th November at 14.30 www.youtube.com/AJEX_JMA

AJR remembers Kristallnacht by keeping a light on More than eight decades on, The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) continues to remember the events of Kristallnacht on 9 November by launching its Keep a Light On campaign and moving the annual commemorative service online and open to all. A logo has been created for use on social media to help spread news of the campaign, along with the hashtag #KeepALightOn. Following on from last years’ initiative, the AJR once again encourages the illumination of synagogues and households on the night of 9 November, in commemoration of the wave of antisemitic violence which took place across Germany and Austria on that night in 1938. AJR Chief Executive, Michael Newman said, “Building on the strong interest of previous years, AJR’s Keep a Light On campaign will create awareness through remembrance in the Jewish community and beyond. We welcome support from families, synagogues, and community organizations.” Due to Covid-19, the AJR has moved its annual Kristallnacht service online. To be live-streamed from Belsize Square Synagogue, guest speakers will be AJR member and Kindertransportee Professor Robert

Shaw, Austrian Ambassador Michael Zimmermann and Hannah Lessing, General Secretary of the Austrian National Fund. Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg will conduct the service. Michael Newman said, “This year more than ever, while Covid-19 continues to deprive us of family and community gatherings, we place great effort on ensuring that key dates in the Jewish calendar, like the anniversary of the Kristallnacht, are commemorated. Everyone is welcome; joining details are on the AJR website.” Gaby Glassman, chair of the Yom Hashoah committee of Pinner Synagogue and a trustee of AJR, paid tribute to the powerful symbolism of the Keep a Light On initiative. “On 9 November 1938, our synagogues were set alight. Now, many decades later, we choose to illuminate our synagogues to remember what happened on that fateful night. Sadly, this reminder seems to be necessary as increasingly we see antisemitism and extremism gaining ground to become the accepted norm once more. This initiative is commended and should serve as an annual alert to ensure that Kristallnacht, and all it stands for, will never be forgotten.”

Stanmore is in with the young For many a year the name oozed with oldschool, tradition, even top hats. A place where hear hear could be heard following the Shabbat morning announcements. A shrinking community. But if you have been following membership numbers, you will have noticed that things have been changing. As of August, over 2020 Stanmore had posted the highest TCM (young) membership increase across the United Synagogue, and the third highest new members altogether. In the last 18 months or so Stanmore have seen thirty primary school families join as members. Their teenage Learn2Lead course had the biggest take-up across United Synagogues too. Community Rabbi Daniel Fine commented “Three years ago, we made the younger part of the community a key focus area. We now employ five people arranging and running our youth and young families departments and services – helped by our

wonderful committee. They are the future of the community and we are happy to see the growth and engagement; they just love coming to Shul and being part of the community. When other Shuls call you up asking for advice and ideas, you know you are doing something right.” Organised by Mirele Mordecai, Stanmore’s young families programme has gained a reputation for creativity. The primary school creative programming continued - zoom children’s services, zoom guest speakers and sessions, a drive-by ice cream event with live music, and then Mr Marvel graduation event and the upcoming Bereishit Programme having a special young families evening track. “It’s all about getting the balance right between enjoyment, education, inspiration and support. Four days, four countries, four Bris Milahs After a busy month of Tishrei, we thought we would have some time to get reorganized at Chabad Golders Green. “Mentch Tracht un G-t Lacht” Rabbi Yossi Simon gets a call from a family in Larnica, Cyprus, “can you come and do a bris?” A few days later, Rabbi Yair Baitz called from Limassol, Cyprus, “another family has had a boy. When you come, can you do this bris, too?” What we thought would be 2 Brissim ended up as 4 days. 4 Countries. 4 Bris Milahs. That certainly hadn’t been the plan when Rabbi Simon boarded the plane to South Cyprus on Monday morning. Immediately upon arriving in South Cyprus, Bris Milah number one was performed in Larnica. Within a few hours, he hit the road to Limasol, over an hour away, to do a Bris for baby number two. The trip was supposed to end there, with the return flight scheduled for Tuesday. 2 Brissim and home in 2 days. But life is not so simple. Rabbi Chaim Azimov in North Cyprus called. A local couple had given birth to a baby boy six months ago but due to the Israeli Covid lockdown, they have been unable to arrange the Bris Milah for their son. Rabbi Azimov asked if Rabbi Simon would come.

Of course he said yes. (Fun fact South Cyprus and North Cyprus were at war with each other until 1974 and it is still not easy to travel from one to the other). More Covid tests and Rabbi Simon arrived in North Cyprus and performed Bris number three. As he arrived at the government quarantine hotel, his phone rang! It was Rabbi Yitzi Loewnthal from Denmark to say that an Israeli family had given

birth to a baby boy last week and would Rabbi Simon be able to get to Copenhagen, Denmark to perform the Bris on Thursday. Arriving back in London, Rabbi Simon went shopping for kosher food for the family in Denmark, whom he had actually done a Bris for three years earlier, and left back to the airport. Rabbi Simon arrived a few hours later to meet the family who travelled in from a town called Aarhus, three hours away, and performed Bris number four.

Thanks to World Jewish Relief Support and UK Government Funding, Young People Lead the Fight against Covid-19 in Rwanda In Rwanda the median age of the population is just 20 years old and that is why UK charity, World Jewish Relief, sees youth leadership within the country as central to the successful fight against Covid-19. With recent ‘Rapid Response’ funding awarded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, World Jewish Relief is able to respond to immediate health-based issues, as well as secondary economic and social impacts of the pandemic. During this six-month project in Eastern Rwanda, in rural Kayonza district, World Jewish Relief will be working with local non-government organisation, SACCA, with whom they have partnered since 2007. Since Rwanda’s national lockdown started in March, employment opportunities have been severely limited. Sadly, many young people have suffered from the secondary economic impact of the pandemic and, despite their skills and enormous potential, are facing unemployment. Furthermore, the country has limited resources with which to address Covid-19. National government funding prioritises urgent healthcare and quarantine centres. In rural areas including Kayonza, where the charity’s projects are based, the pandemic worsens already precarious economic conditions, and its impact is felt harshly.

There is a significant gap in solutions addressing the devastating economic impact of the pandemic, particularly in rural areas. A network of 141 youth mobilisers –predominantly SACCA graduates who have lost their jobs through the pandemic – have been recruited to work within the communities across the district. Mitigating against the immediate effects of Covid-19, the youth mobilisers will be improving the flow of information about preventative hygiene practices, and in- Esironi Kimana creasing access to clean water at the local, village level. In a country where only 4.6% of the population actually has access to handwashing facilities, effective messaging can only go so far, so they have also installed handwashing stations at local health centres to address this shortage. They are aiming to reach thousands of households with their messaging and believe that this localised approach will enable them to also address social and cultural challenges, and will ensure messaging does not increase stigma around reporting

symptoms and seeking treatment. The youth mobilisers will also help them to identify particularly vulnerable populations and subsequently respond to the secondary, economic effects of the pandemic on their lives. This population includes informal workers who have lost their income during lockdown, families with disabilities, single mothers, and older people. The charity will be supporting these families by providing soap, handwashing stations and food, as well as cash transfers; a particularly dignified

form of relief that enables families to choose how they spend funds. Crucially, their support means families will not have to engage in risky behaviour to sustain themselves and their families. Eighty year old Esironi Kimana (pictured) has benefited enormously from the support of the project’s youth mobilisers. Esironi has lived a challenging life. His first wife died, and his second wife left him with a small child. He worked hard for years to support himself and his daughter. As she is now grown up and works away from home, lockdown has been very lonely for Esironi. This all changed when he was visited by youth mobilisers, two kind and energetic young women who came to tell him about Covid-19 prevention. They identified Esironi as a vulnerable older person needing support, and he was immediately provided with a hand washing station, soap, a mask and 25kg of rice. The youth mobilisers also spoke to local government to ensure he was entitled to government assistance in future. He now receives regular visits from them, which he welcomes. Thanks to their support, he no longer feels alone or forgotten.

60,000 steps for 60,000 heartbeats A British 11-year old is to walk 26 miles to save other children’s hearts. Uri Geller has said he will give artworks to the highest donor to her campaign. October 19, 2020, Richmond, Surrey Eleven-year old Amelie Anderson hasn’t been fazed by the restrictions imposed by COVID-19, causing thousands of children across the country to study from home in recent months. Later this month, Amelie - from Richmond, Surrey - will undertake a sponsored walk over two days along the Thames towpath, from Hampton Court Palace to Tower Bridge. The 60,000-step walk of 26 miles (42km) is the length of a full marathon and is in aid of the Save A Child’s Heart charity in Israel. “The heart of a healthy 12-year old girl [Bat Mitzvah age] beats approximately 60,000 times every 12 hours,” explains Amelie, who will be celebrating her Bat Mitzvah next summer. “My goal is to walk 60,000 steps to raise $15,000 (£11,500) to enable a child from a developing country to undergo life-saving heart surgery in Israel.” “I wanted to do something meaningful to mark my Bat Mitzvah, that will make a positive difference in other children’s lives,” says Amelie who is a pupil at The Green School for Girls in Isleworth. “I heard about the work of Save A Child’s Heart, and how they bring children with heart problems from developing countries around the world to Israel and give them an operation that they wouldn’t have been able to receive in their home country, to help them live, with a healthy heart. I think that’s amazing!” Amelie’s goal of $15,000 covers all medical care, as well as travel and accommodation for the child and a family member during the child’s stay at Save A Child’s Heart in Israel. Her campaign is part of a special project on tzedakah and tikkun olam she has been working on in the runup to her Bat Mitzvah with her aunt who lives in Israel. Amelie corresponded with 13-year old Abay, from Ethiopia who recently underwent successful heart surgery with Save A Child’s Heart. “We discovered that we both enjoy Maths,” says Amelie, relating how, thanks to her surgery, Abay now looks forward to pursuing her dream of one day becoming a teacher. Proud grandparents Lynne and Tony Zeffert of Liverpool and Dr. Alan and Alison Anderson of Sheffield will be cheering her on from a distance. Amelie is the daughter of Dr. Chloe Zeffert-Anderson & Robert Anderson of Richmond who are members of Richmond Synagogue. Mum Chloe, who is a GP, says: “Despite the unprecedented challenges we are facing as a result of COVID-19, we shouldn’t forget the millions of children around the world who are suffering from

life-threatening conditions, and who need urgent help.” “I am so proud that Amelie is marking this special milestone in her life by doing something to make such a profound difference to the life of another child and their family.” So far, Amelie has raised over £5,000 among family and friends. “But we still have a long way to go,” Amelie says with some trepidation. “I really hope that with people’s support I can reach my goal.” Israeli-British psychic and TV personality, Uri Gelller, heard about Amelie’s campaign and has gifted a collection of lithographs which will be awarded to the person who makes the highest donation to her campaign by December 31, 2020. Geller created the collection with Cypriot artist Andreas Charalambides. You can view his video message here: https://youtu.be/ex1V4P5UZlM

Alessandra Tortone with her mural

Mural brightens Whittington’s walls A colourful mural painted by a Camp Simcha volunteer is now brightening the walls of a Whittington Hospital post-operative recovery room - converted from adult to paediatric use due to Covid-19. The bright, animal scene features various creatures playing on pipes and medical machines similar to the ones in the room at the North London hospital. Artist Alessandra Tortone, from Kilburn, who has been painting Camp Simcha hospital murals for nearly seven years, explains: “The recovery room had lots of equipment in it by the wall, which I thought could look a bit frightening for children. I decided to incorporate that into the mural, hopefully making it all feel less scary, with the animals having fun around all the hospital pipes and tubes.” Whittington Hospital Recovery team leader Francis Johnston said the creation of the cheerful child-friendly space was really important, because children often emerge

from surgery feeling confused or anxious, and wanting their mummy or daddy. “The mural donated to us here at the Whittington will enable us to make a difference to all of the children coming through our recovery room as it will help put them at ease, having a calming effect and hopefully cheering them up. It will also help to distract children from any anxiety as it enables the nurses to talk about the painting and discuss the colours and animals that are integral in the mural, keeping them occupied until they are collected by the ward nurse and delivered safely back to their parents.” Camp Simcha Hospital Outreach Co-ordinator Joanne Woolich said: “Over the years, Alessandra has painted some amazing murals for hospitals we support via Camp Simcha’s outreach programme. We are so grateful for all her time and the creativity she puts into making each space look so wonderful.”

Join LSJS for a court room drama of biblical proportions! The story of Abraham’s divinely-instructed attempt to sacrifice his son is truly shocking. Millennia have not lessened its impact. Was Abraham right to risk his son’s life? Was it fair to his wife Sarah? We have gathered great legal minds to debate this historic case. Presiding Judge: Lindsey Kushner QC. Prosecution and defence lawyers: Professor Anthony Julius; David Wolfson QC; Jonathan Seitler QC; Dr Harris Bor. This court room drama will serve to deepen our appreciation of the Torah and the profound challenges faced by our ancestors. Rabbi Dr Raphael Zarum, Dean of LSJS said. “How could our founding father almost sacrifice his beloved son? The Talmudic and medieval sages sought to make sense of this shocking story in multiple ways – God never intended it to happen, Abraham misunderstood the command, he chose to suppress his feelings, it was a test

of his loyalty and faith, he knew that Isaac would be saved somehow, and so on. And yet, say the rabbis, Sarah died soon after, maybe of shock, sadness or disappointment. We thought that a modern courtroom trial would be a dramatic and memorable way to bring this to life for a new generation. Marshalling traditional and legal sources our guest lawyers will passionately debate the case in a bid to understand its profound significance to the birth of our people. It is our appreciation of this story that will be on trial – what message is our great Patriarch passing on to us for our lives today?”

Resource, the North London-based charitable organisation that helps unemployed members of the Jewish community find employment, has received a £9,300 award from the National Lottery in recognition of the help it provides to members of the community to find and secure employment. Resource CEO Victoria Sterman said the award has come at just the right time as demand has continued to increase markedly over the pandemic period. “We’ve experienced a 300 per cent increase in the number of people approaching us for help since the beginning of the pandemic. And as government support to firms reduces, we expect to see this continuing to rise for some time. “The priority has been to recruit and provide training for four new advisors. They have joined a highly skilled and professional volunteer team providing one-to-one advice and support. A programme of tailored

workshops and seminars also encompasses every aspect of finding and securing the right job, including preparing effective CVs and job applications, using networking to full advantage, psychometric testing, improving IT skills and mock interviews. “We have also initiated a new scheme for those who may simply want to talk through their employment situation without necessarily becoming a client. They can book to have a telephone discussion with an advisor. “We now provide all of our services online. They are available for clients anywhere in the country, from all walks of life, any occupation or profession and regardless of religious observance. And thanks to our financial supporters, all our services are free.” Further information is available at www. resource-centre.org or telephone 020 8346 4000.

Pinner launch ‘SPARK’ for kids

Pinner Shul launches a Sunday programme for children

Pinner United Synagogue have launched a Covid-safe programme for children on a Sunday morning. SPARK is part of a schedule for families and young children focusing on Jewish learning and fun. Norwood gets the Royal seal of approval

This week the Royal Family took to social media to celebrate the work of the UK’s oldest Jewish charity, Norwood. This was a first for any Jewish charity. On Twitter, the Royal Family’s posts pointed out that the Queen had been Norwood’s patron since 1952 and shared photos of Her Majesty and the Princess Royal visiting Norwood’s services over the

years. The posts quickly racked up more than 2,000 likes and took the work of the charity to a wide and largely uncharted audience (the Royal Family has more than 4 million followers on Twitter alone). Norwood’s chief executive, Dr Beverley Jacobson, said: “The Queen is aware that this is our 225th anniversary year and conversations have been taking place with the Palace for more than a year to find an appropriate way to mark this anniversary. This is a hugely exciting time for Norwood. This year has been challenging but we are immensely proud of our Royal connection, which dates back to 1815. And for the Royal Family to use its own platform to tell the world about this connection is especially appropriate as we look forward to our biggest event of the year, our Annual Dinner Reimagined on 9 November. The charity’s co-president, Lady Nicola Mendelsohn CBE, adds: “In our 225th year it is an historic honour for Norwood to be chosen as the first Jewish charity to be highlighted on Her Majesty The Queen’s social media channel. This is another first for Norwood and reflects the innovative and forward thinking nature of the organisation.”

“After months of no children entering the shul it was magical to see the children running around on the outside play equipment and laughing and smiling together as they jumped and sung the morning tefillot. We are so excited to be starting this fantastic programme.” There are two classes, ‘Mini-sparks’ for children in nursery and reception and ‘Spark ignite’ for children in years 1 and 2.

Orly’s Batmitzvah Biscuits work a treat!

Orly Burton with her friends & the biscuit boxes they put together for GIFT recipient families

Planning a Simcha often poses challenges, but during coronavirus times, there are extra hurdles to jump and balls to juggle. For some, however, it offers an opportunity to be extra creative and think out of the box. With Orly’s batmitzvah looming, Broughton Park’s Shana & Ben Burton, like so many other Bnei Mitzva parents, had a challenge - how to mark their daughter’s Batmitzvah in a creative, meaningful and fitting way, whilst also providing an opportunity to celebrate; and for Orly to enjoy her special day together with friends & family. Together with Sophie Woolfstein and Aliza Noe, GIFT’s Manchester coordinators, the family got together to plan the big day. Shana explains, “After discussions with the wonderful GIFT team, we came up with a plan; for Orly and her friends,

working in shifts, to pack food support parcels at the GIFT warehouse and also to bake a range of luxury biscuits with a professional cookery teacher Debra Kay to include in the bags. Although home baked cookies are the “norm” for Orly; the girls have learnt that the things they have and take for granted are not a given for everyone in this world. It was truly heartwarming to watch the girls baking together and pack biscuit boxes to give to others who are less fortunate.” GIFT’s Sophie Woolfstein noted “The Burtons really wanted to make Orly’s Batmitzvah meaningful & special and they really achieved this; making it a memorable occasion for everyone involved. The positive feedback we got from our recipient families was also heartwarming.”

Chai’s annual Natalie Shipman Memorial Lecture The Chai Cancer Care ‘Natalie Shipman Memorial’ lecture on ‘New strategies for improving outcomes in ovarian cancer’ with Professor Gordon Jayson - professor of Medical Oncology, The Christie Foundation Trust and University of Manchester attracted over 400 households online on the evening of Wednesday 21st October. Natalie z’l, daughter of Susan Shipman Chai’s founder president, was one of the catalysts that inspired Chai’s inception thirty years ago. She was diagnosed with cancer when she was two years old and sadly passed away from a brain tumour just before her eighth birthday. Chai Chairman Louise Hager introduced the evening informing the audience of the many ways that Chai is still supporting their clients during Covid-19 and highlighted one particular service relevant to the evening in dedication to Natalie. “A young man who was one of Natalie’s classmates recently told us how he remembers how distressed he and the other children in the class felt when they were told that Natalie had passed away. At that time there was no opportunity to have a further discussion and cancer was not spoken about – and certainly not to children. It was often referred to as ‘The Big C’ in a negative way, but we have reclaimed this with our latest campaign as the ‘Chai big C* of *Care.’ Our ‘Chai in Schools’ programme is an initiative that currently operates in 23 primary and secondary schools across

the UK. It supports children affected by a cancer diagnosis of either themselves or someone in their family. It also gives teachers who may never have encountered this situation, advice and training in how to respond appropriately to the child’s needs.” Dr Adrian Tookman - Medical Director, Marie Curie Care then introduced Professor Jayson whose presentation covered important areas including the biology behind ovarian cancer, the BRCA gene and the latest new treatments in an in informative and approachable manner. Highlighting the similarities and differences between irritable bowel syndrome and ovarian cancer, Gordon pointed out that although both involve a bloated stomach and abdominal pain, IBS usually comes and goes, whereas ovarian cancer becomes progressively worse. Typically, IBS is not something you initially develop in your 50s. Speaking about the importance of BRCA gene screening for those with a family history in breast/ovarian cancer particularly within the Jewish Ashkenazi community he said, “We are trying to pick up BRCA genes in all our Ashkenazi patients with ovarian cancer so we can make the family members aware in advance so that they are able to make informed choices to potentially remove the risk.“ He reassuringly expressed his confidence in the advancement in recent ovarian cancer treatments for those with BRCA

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON Size matters. We live in an age where 50 inch flatscreens are not uncommon, and uncurtained front windows bear testimony to that. I remember when my parents got their first colour TV, in the summer of 1978, when Martina Navratilova won her first Wimbledon title. Although colour had reached our shops as early as 1969, we were not wealthy enough to make the leap, and in fact I was quite content watching Dr Who and Tomorrow’s World in B&W. When we got our Grundig 22” TV, the cost of those ‘new fangled’ TVs was phenomenal, possibly around £8,000 in today’s money. I remember it well, Jacqueline Curzon not just because of the captivating Ms Navratilova, but because there PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY was at the end of the night a test card (pattern), with the smiling girl, creepy clown doll and tic-tac-toe. Elsewhere in the States, Joe Biden is edging into a position of potential victory, now he has a stinging three point lead in Texas, a Republican stronghold, fiercely held since (Democrat) Jimmy Carter’s win back in 1976. Georgia, Florida, Ohio and Virginia are amongst other critical swing states, with the election now only a week away. Trump, for many, is toxic, has alienated his voters, and is perceived as a presidential liability through his perennial false promises, with many on the battle ground describing him as ‘an outand-out-liar.’ Should Biden become President, Kamala Harris - his VP could find herself as the first female President [sorry Hillary] before long, given Biden’s state of health. Trump, never one to miss an opportunity for a jibe, had a field day over Biden's apparent confusion when, on Sunday - at a virtual concert - he referred numerous times to Trump as ‘George.’ Whilst Biden probably hadn’t mistaken the huge Donald for the trim, spritely George W Bush, such apparent neurological deficit is of course a huge concern. I believe Americans are ultimately looking for change: of policy, of party, of person. If there is ultimately a Democrat victory, they have a VP with full cognitive power to steer their ship, but should the Republicans win again, there’s going to be a more fractured America. Looking at our own political landscape, I’m sure UK politicians also make promises they don’t intend to keep, for Machiavellian moves appear to be a necessary playing card in the game. However, notwithstanding Trump's predictable, blatant optimism, this must be a very unsettling and stressful time round the campfire in the White House. Half term is upon us, or at least those who didn’t have the wonderful monsoon weeks holiday at sukkot. For those presently in school this represents a challenge, knowing that other little people are enjoying sports, ballet or gym. But presumably they’re giving their screens a rest, and hopefully skipping the pizza. If you thought after missing out on school photographs last year, you might catch up this session, you may be sorely mistaken. School photographers may go ahead with class or individual pictures, but are likely to decline taking sibling shots, due to the fact that the children are not in the same bubble, even though they live in the same house, which is farcical. For many families these are heirloom photographs,

capturing a special moment in time. In my own case I have twins in year 6, and a younger daughter in year 2, and it will be the last year they attend the same school. In fact it could be the last formal pictures I ever see, because of my cancer diagnosis, and it would be a shame if the end of their combined journey might not be officially celebrated. Nu? In this week's news we hear that the BLM movement has applied to register themselves as a political party; it's going to be interesting to see how that develops. As I remarked before, I think BLM as a shout-out is unnecessary, because All Lives Matter, although it seems word choices are perceived differently. Charles Moore [Telegraph, 27 Oct] reports that the Headteacher of Benenden got herself in a spot of trouble by talking about Black History Month, which existed as far back as 1926, but was known then as Negro History Week. [Bet no one else knew this either]. Students watching her Microsoft Teams presentation were appalled and up-in-arms, which surely reflects that choices of words that can variously appeal to - or offend - an audience. Going back to Benenden, tho’... The Head refused to placate those who called for sanctions for her use of the word ‘negro,’ insisting that our role in society is to discuss and debate, and not rise up in defence or dissent, as seems to be a current reactionary trend. The world will surely present conflict, but it is not for a ‘woke’ generation to dictate acceptable terms of engagement, undermining those elected to educate. This we see especially in higher education, where those in authority often bend like willow, to every politically perceived wrong. Lastly, a tribute to Britain’s oldest woman. Joan Hocquard (112) was born under the reign of Edward VII, and always determined to live life to the full. She professed to eating high calorie foods like butter and cream, and didn’t believe in dieting. She said there was no secret to long life and [longevity] must be down to having good genes. Her father was a colonial officer in charge of shipping in East Africa, so she grew up in Kenya. During the Second World War she drove ambulances before finally moving to the south coast with her husband, who she met through a mutual love of sailing. They travelled across Europe in a camper van and went on yachting holidays until 1981. She was described by many as a strong willed character and fiercely independent. In typical style she declined to accept a card from the Queen on her 100th birthday, as she didn’t want people to know how old she was. That’s so cute. Now, I should be so lucky to reach 100 and have that problem! Wishing you no more tiers. Self awareness

The beginning of the cure in counselling BY ARYEH SAMPSON When a person chooses to go for counselling it is often due to experiencing a feeling of unhappiness, anxiety or being stuck, combined with a sense that one is unable to overcome it on one’s own. The first stage of counselling is to gain greater self awareness, to understand what is causing these feelings of anxiety. This occurs through a process of exploration, in which one explores the current situation as well as the past. Often what is discovered is that a person’s problem is rooted in his/her own self defeating behaviour. Commonly, people who have had difficult experiences in the past, adopt certain protective behaviours in order to deal with them. These behaviours, however, can become the cause of problems later in life. For example, take the hypothetical case of a man who has an anger management issue which is damaging his relationships. Through exploration of the past, he remembers that at school he was very sensitive and was bullied. To protect himself, he learned to become very angry and aggressive whenever he felt threatened. This behaviour became habitual, and as an adult each time

he feels threatened he reacts with anger and aggression. The process of gaining greater awareness is known as “making the unconscious conscious”, since we can often be completely unaware of our own self defeating behaviours. There is a story of a man who repeatedly complained about his lunch. “I hate cucumber sandwiches,” he would say every lunch time. One day his colleague said to him, “Why don’t you ask your wife to make you different sandwiches tomorrow?” He replied, “You don’t understand; I make them”. There are many deterrents to gaining greater self awareness. In therapy these are known as defence mechanisms. I will enumerate a few below.

1) PROJECTION

Someone who is in denial about his/her own attributes, thoughts or emotions, may unconsciously ascribe them to others. For example, a person may avoid the discomfort of admitting his/her faults by projecting these faults onto another.

2) TURNING AGAINST ONESELF

This is the reverse of projection. A person does not allow him/herself to experience

aggressive or negative feelings towards others, and these feelings are directed back on themselves. They create negative self condemnation, such as ‘I am no good’, ‘I am unworthy, shameful,’ etc. This person assumes too much responsibility and may idealize others, thinking they can do no wrong.

prevent having to deal with a difficult situation. One example of this is keeping so busy that one has no time to think about important issues. Other strategies include intellectualisation, where a person uses abstract thinking or makes generalisations to avoid acknowledging something; and rationalisation, where one uses logic to explain away a matter but avoids its true reason. Understanding these strategies gives us greater insight into why a person has to truly search in order to understand him/ herself. From this awareness, one can begin to change.

Winter Comfort Desserts BY DENISE PHILLIPS It is that time of the year when guilty pleasures like comfort desserts provide an upbeat indulgence! Cold weather means warm food or something sweet to make you feel better. Covid times has meant we eat more at home and desserts in my household are normally only made for Friday night to be enjoyed over Shabbos. They are a special treat and so why not elevate the enjoyment with something different that provide a wellbeing feeling. The most popular English dessert is sticky toffee pudding. Other desserts like crumble, cheesecake, brownies, apple pie with custard, carrot cake, bread and butter pudding and banoffee pie all rank quite highly in the dessert menu. Some perceived high caloric desserts are not so ‘bad’ for you, ingredients like dark chocolate do have proven health benefits as it is loaded with nutrients that can positively affect your health. Cocoa and dark chocolate are powerful antioxidants and may lower blood pressure. Researchers have found that cocoa, the main ingredient causes the brain to release endorphins, the feel-good chemicals and in my opinion a little of a ‘good thing’ should be included in a balanced diet! Comfort desserts for me include recipes with salted caramel, baked apples, chocolate pecan pie, chocolate brownies and baked Alaska. On the right are two of my favourite winter comfort desserts that I would like to share.

Ingredients 200g dark chocolate 280g non-dairy margarine ~ 170g plain white flour 200g muscovado sugar 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 75g cocoa powder Pinch ground sea salt ~ 200 ml almond or soya milk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 tablespoons maple syrup 255g non-dairy cream cheese ~ For the Swirl Topping 150g non diary cream cheese 2 tablespoons muscovado sugar 150g mix of fresh blueberries, blackberries and raspberries Method 1. Preheat the oven to 160ºC /320F/ Gas mark 3. Grease a 22 cm square tin and line with baking parchment paper. 2. Melt the chocolate and margarine in a bowl over a pan of simmering water (or in a double boiler), stirring frequently. 3. Sift the flour, muscovado sugar, baking powder, cocoa powder, and the salt into another large bowl. 4. In a separate bowl mix together the almond or soya milk, vanilla extract,

maple syrup and non-diary cream cheese. 5. Transfer the chocolate mixture, flour mixture and almond mixture to the food processor and whizz until smooth. 6. Pour into the prepared cake tin. 7. For the swirl topping mix the non-dairy cream cheese and muscovado sugar together and dot with spoonfuls on top of the chocolate mixture. Sprinkle with mix berries. 8. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until just firm. Best served warm.

Sticky Toffee Pudding If you are looking for a dessert that is decadent, sticky and sweet ~ this is your pudding! Served with a scoop of the best vanilla ice cream and pecan toffee sauce what could be better. I like to make them in individual ramekins and then invert them. An excuse is not required to make them. They also freeze well, so space permitting ~ make double and keep for another time. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time 35 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients 55g margarine 75g dark brown muscovado sugar 2 tablespoons golden syrup 225g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 eggs 2 tablespoons rum or brandy 1 teaspoon vanilla essence ½ teaspoon bicarbonate soda 200g pitted dates 1 – 2 tablespoons vegetable oil – to grease the ramekin dishes For the Sauce 2 x 250ml Soya Alpro cream 170g dark brown muscavado sugar 55g margarine 55g pecan nuts – roughly chopped Method 1) Line the base and grease 6 ramekins with vegetable oil. 2) Place 200ml boiling water and the dates into a food processor and blend to form a paste.

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

3) Mix the margarine, sugar, flour, golden syrup, baking powder, egg, vanilla essence, rum or brandy and bicarbonate of soda and whiz together until smooth to form a batter. 4) Pour the date mixture into the batter. Spoon into the prepared ramekin dishes. 5) Bake for 25 - 30 minutes on 100* steam or until set. 6) To make the sauce, melt the margarine and sugar together and cook until they start to go golden. Add the pecan nuts and stir in the cream. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes. To serve the stylish way: Invert the puddings. Pour over the sauce and place a scoop of ice cream on the top.

ASK THE RABBI

29 OCTOBER 2020

Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com I MADE A MISTAKE! Dear Rabbi This is a question of a more personal nature but feel free to answer in your column if you should so wish. I am at mid-life and looking back I realise I have made some significant mistakes, whether in my personal life or career. I won’t get into the detail of it, but I wonder whether at midlife there’s any point really reflecting on this, maybe fixing some of it, or just moving on and forgetting about it? This may be a question as much for a therapist than a Rabbi but I enjoy your column and perspective and welcome your thoughts. Amit Dear Amit A man receives his pay-check and discovers that his employer overpaid him by £200. “Wow! Lady Luck is on my side!” He of course keeps shtum. The next month he receives his paycheck, he’s been underpaid by £200. He storms into his employer’s office: “Sir, I think you’ve made a mistake on my check.” “And how do you figure that?” his boss asks. “Well, it seems I’ve been underpaid by £200. No disrespect Sir, but I want my money.” The boss looks at him: “Last month I overpaid you by £200 and you didn’t complain so why complain now?” The man pauses a moment. “Well sir, the thing is, I don’t mind if you make a mistake once but if it becomes a habit then I am forced to say something.” Isn’t it true that we are always afraid of making mistakes? How do you relate to yourself when mistakes are made? Obviously

it might very much depend on the nature of the mistake - some mistakes are much bigger than others – but generally speaking, we tend to be hyper-critical with ourselves and those around us when it comes to mistakes. And the stress, the criticism, and the negativity we associate with mistakes can actually cause unnecessary harm, fear, and anguish - in essence, making a difficult situation even worse. An implied value in many cultures is that we always have to pay for our mistakes: if you fail a test, then you are a failure. If you make a mistake then you are a mistake. Judaism maintains that your mistakes don’t have to define you. We all make them and we all have the capacity to learn from them, grow from them, use them as springboards by which we can live life altogether different. The key is to recognise your mistakes. Don’t deny them to yourself lest it’s all a futile exercise. Yes we are products of our mistakes but we don’t have to be prisoners of them. Mistakes are inevitable. If you can learn from them then you’ll be able to get value from them. Progress won’t be a straight line but if you keep learning you will have more successes than failures, and the mistakes you make along the way will help you get to where you want to go.

TEFILIN AT NIGHT Dear Rabbi Is it ever right to put on Tefilin at night? Especially if I missed doing so during the day? I find my work experience leads me to leave home before sunrise and

Pirkei Avot

I am working all day with little or no time for Tefilin and would like to do so when I come home at night. Andrew Dear Andrew From a strictly Biblical perspective it is OK to wear Tefilin at night. The Rabbis forbade it however because it is very likely one will fall asleep in them which is not OK. That said, when you miss an entire day, can you make up for it at night? After all, the Rabbinic prohibition would deny you the fulfilment of the mitzvah altogether. The answer to that is twofold: (1) As in Judaism the night is already the next day, putting them on the night after your long days’ work isn’t going to compensate for what you missed early that day as you are now already into the next day. (2) There is a discussion in Jewish law about whether you can put them on the night before if you know with certainty that you will not be able to put them on the following day. The conclusion (Igros Moshe 1/10) is only in extraordinary circumstances when you know that it would be impossible to put them on the next day, you can put them on at night – but only after you have already woken up from sleep. According to eye-witness testimony, this was common practise in the camps in the Holocaust when they were able to secretly do so away from prying eyes. So in theory if it was impossible for you to put them on the entire next day then waking up earlier to do so, even if still dark outside, would be permissible. But, your situation is hardly what one

one who never worked a day in their life for it. One can give a gift and it becomes truly the other person’s. However when it comes to Olam Habah, a person must work hard themselves to earn their own merits. You cannot simply be the recipient of a gift. Even the child of a true Tzadik, or even a gadol hadar does not automatically earn reward by virtue of

their father; they must toil themselves. Hashem rewards effort not yichus. The statement at the end of this small Mishnah is priceless, like MasterCard! If not now, when? How many times in life do we say we will do something soon only to be distracted by the slightest thing and then too often we forget all about it and never do it. By training ourselves to take advantage of the now and seize the moment whilst we can we will grow in our Judaism in leaps and bounds. Amen.

Corona Diary #18

29 OCTOBER 2020

Appreciating the value of work and profession BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN Jewish History is launched through an epic pilgrimage to the promised land. Having been selected by G-d, Avraham abandons his homeland, family, and culture to enter the great unknown. He isn’t provided a specific destination but, instead, is instructed to journey to a land which God will ultimately “assign”. His final destination is withheld, in part, to build anticipation for this mysterious but magical land which G-d has chosen. Additionally, traveling without a clear destination makes this decision even more courageous- not only does Avraham sever himself from his past but he enters the “great wide open”. Even though Avraham isn’t yet aware that he is traveling to Israel, this parcel of land has already been preselected by G-d - there can be only one land for the first Jew – the land of G-d. A midrash provides a dramatically different storyline. G-d didn’t disclose the itinerary because the final destination wasn’t predetermined. Amazingly, at least according to this midrash, Avraham had an option to select any country along his route, but decided upon Israel because of what he encountered during his journey. As he traveled through ancient Mesopotamia (most likely modern day Syria and Lebanon) he witnessed people engaged in continuous leisure- eating, drinking and relaxing- while ignoring work and responsibility. Crossing into the borders of Israel, Avraham witnessed a population assiduously at work- plowing, planting and harvesting throughout the seasonal cycles. Witnessing a society of work and labor, Avraham selected this culture, while disregarding the cultures of luxury and entertainment which he had previously encountered. Evidently, Avraham was attracted to the work ethic he saw in Israel, despite the pagan culture which dominated these ancient states. It was not their religious or spiritual lifestyle which attracted Avraham, but rather their healthy work ethic. The Corona crisis has dramatically disrupted our lives and, in particular, has upended our professional lives and schedules. We have a tendency to settle in to our professional lives and to take this aspect of our life for granted. The current pandemic and the disruption of our normal work schedule is a valuable “moment” to reexamine the benefits of work and labour for human and religious experience. Firstly, work and labour are important because they lend structure and regiment to our day. Without a schedule we tend to waste time or worse, we tend to misuse

our time. The mishnah in Ketuvot (59b) exempts a wealthy woman from domestic activities, as she can delegate her tasks to servants. Providing a minority position, Rebbi Eliezer is wary of completely discharging a wealthy woman from domestic responsibilities and obligates even wealthy woman in basic domestic duties. Idle hands are the tools of the devil and lazy behaviour often times degenerates into carelessness, misconduct and actual transgressions. Even without causing moral or religious misbehaviour a lack of schedule leads to listlessness and aimlessness. Schedule and routine are the great stabilizers of human behaviour and without this important framework, life can quickly become disorganized. The midrash portrays Avraham as being impressed with the general work ethic and dedication of the Israeli residents but also with their adherence to schedule: they performed their various agricultural chores during the suitable seasons. Over the past few months – as our personal and professional schedules have been reformatted- we have all been challenged to maximize time and avoid sluggishness and maintain a healthy daily schedule. The disruption in our professional routine has underscored the value of a steady routine. Beyond the stabilizing effects of a healthy schedule, work and labor also provide us with a feeling of creativity and productivity. G-d invested humans with many distinctive qualities such as intellect, cognitive speech, free will and self-consciousness. In addition, He fashioned us -like Himself- with creative capacity. At the core of our identity is the desire to feel valuable and we feel most valuable when we express the creative potential G-d imbued in us. Productivity gratifies us, while sustained inertia feels empty and sometimes selfish. The gemara in Sanhedrin (24b) disqualifies chronic gamblers from serving as legal witnesses even though gambling may not be considered legal theft. As they fritter away their time without contributing to the “greater good” they are considered subordinate or “inferior” citizens and are unfit to participate in the legal process. Creativity and productivity are inherent features of human identity and expression of that creativity yields deep satisfaction. Performing tasks, completing projects and solving challenges elicit various important traits which enhance our character such as: organization, resourcefulness, persistence, commitment, will power and resilience. Even if a particular profession isn’t creative, most professions are still productive and most advance social welfare. Contributing

Creativity and productivity are inherent features of human identity and expression of that creativity yields deep satisfaction. to something larger than personal interest improves self-esteem and self-worth. Work is important because it refines us and calls upon numerous worthwhile traits. Human creativity also acknowledges our great partnership with G-d, who expects us to perfect His world. Rabbi Akiva was once challenged by an adversarial philosopher-warrior named Tunus Rufus regarding the mitzvah of milah. Romans celebrated the beauty of the male human form and therefore viewed circumcision as mutilation. Mocking this mitzvah, Tunus sneered that if G-d viewed a circumcised body as the ideal form, babies should be born naturally circumcised. Rabbi Akiva responded that G-d intentionally created an imperfect world because He desires our complementary efforts to perfect His original product. Whenever we act creatively we boost our partnership with G-d. Work provides an additional value- beyond the provision of schedule and the opportunity to express human creativity. Work is generally a collective experience, drawing us out of solitary lives and connecting us with a broader community. Most professions are interactive in a direct sense- allowing us to interact with colleagues and clients, students and teachers, patients and patrons. Social settings both

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

broaden our horizons and provide us with much-needed perspective upon our own lives. Even professions which are less interactive and provide little personal interaction still provide a general sense of collective experience. G-d intended that we sleep at night and perform industry during daylight hours and by working we are naturally aligned both with G-d’s design and with the broader human community which labours during daylight hours. Even when working alone we share a sense of common agenda with a broader community of human beings who are at work. Man is not meant to live as a hermit, isolated from his fellow creatures and our work engages us and connects us to humanity at large. The Corona experience has affected many areas of human and religious experience including our professional lives. The disruption caused by this crisis may help us better appreciate the benefits of our work and of our professions. Rabbi Moshe Taragin is a rabbi at Yeshivat Har Etzion/Gush, a hesder yeshiva. He has smicha and a BA in computer science from Yeshiva University as well as a masters degree in English literature from the City University of New York.

Weekly Dvar Torah F RO M ERETZ Y I S R A E L

Go Forth to the Land That I Will Show You BY RABBI YOSEF ZVI RIMON “The L-rd said to Avram, ‘Go forth from your native land and from your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you shall be a blessing.’” (Bereishit 12:1-2). Chazal saw this as one of the ten tests G-d gave to Avraham. What about going to the Land of Israel is a great test? One obvious difficulty is the disconnection from his father’s house – leaving his country, his homeland. However, there is another difficulty in Avraham’s journey to Eretz Yisrael – entering into the unknown! Chanan Porat related that during the War of Attrition, he was stationed in the Suez Canal with the Paratroopers Brigade. They were constantly under attack from the Egyptians. One day, the lieutenant colonel split them into two groups. One group was to go to a certain place and wait there in ambush. To the other group, he simply relayed: “go towards the Egyptians, and you will get

detailed instructions as you walk.” The second group were more concerned than the first, as they did not know where to go! They had to solely rely on the commander on the walkie-talkie to lead them the right way. And so it is with Avraham’s test. The test is greater when it comes to the unknown – “the land which I will show you.” Why didn’t G-d reveal to Avraham where to go? Why did He only tell him “to the land that I will show you?” One possibility is that this statement is part of the test – walking after G-d into the unknown. Chazal add that G-d did not reveal the place in order to enhance it in the eyes of Avraham, to increase Avraham’s desire for the unknown place. The wait increases the expectation, the discovery of the surprise

The fact that Avraham does not know where to go, but always depends on G-d’s guidance, forces Avraham to constantly be connected to G-d.

A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE

One is Hashem RABBI GOODMAN The fact that a “simple” Rashi in Chumash can enthrall both a five-year-old and an eighty-five-year-old is one of the Torah’s remarkable qualities. The Torah grows together with a person; the more proficient one becomes in his learning and the more his mind develops, the more beauty and depth he sees in every word and nuance. Unfortunately, though, it is much easier for a person not to exert the effort he needs to deepen his understanding, and instead feel satisfied and content with his “childish” grasp and perspective. A surprising, yet common, example of this lamentable condition is found in the Pasuk of Shema Yisroel. From a tender age we are taught to declare with pure and unswerving faith that Hashem is our G-d and that He is One, meaning, that He is the only G-d and that there is no other G-d but Him; celestial beings are powerless, and statues are merely chunks of stone. As the years pass by, we continue to affirm this belief twice a day, proclaiming that Hashem is One, but with the same

that lies at the end. I would like to suggest a possible third explanation of why G-d did not reveal the place to Avraham in advance. The fact that Avraham does not know where to go, but always depends on G-d’s guidance, forces Avraham to constantly be connected to G-d. G-d is his GPS! He leads him, He guides him, He is with him all the time. Where is Avraham going? To the place that G-d leads him! G-d says to Avraham “Lech Lecha” and then the Torah described that Avraham does go. Why does the Torah add “and Avram went as the L-rd had commanded him?” Perhaps this comes to emphasize that this walk is not the same journey that began before Parashat Lech Lecha (which was also in the direction of the land of

unchanging interpretation: that the sun has no independent power and that statues are not real. Although we may develop academically and achieve the highest qualifications, somehow our intellectual comprehension of Hashem’s unity remains stuck in a time warp. In this week’s Parsha we meet Judaism’s founding father and pioneer: Avraham Avinu. Avraham, a man of unbridled truth and integrity, introduced Monotheism to the world while single handedly fighting the fabricated and phony religious worship of the time. As a result, if we truly want to deepen our understanding of Hashem’s Oneness, then it is incumbent upon us to study the life and times of Avraham Avinu. After Hashem commanded Avraham to uproot himself from his homeland, his birthplace and his father’s home and subsequently establish himself in Eretz Canaan, the Pasuk relates how Avraham took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all their belongings, set out on their journey and arrived at their destination. Rabbi Avraham Azulai (1570-1643), a Kabbalistic author and commentator, asks: why is it necessary

for the Torah to tell us that Avraham took his family and property with him – who would have thought otherwise? Rabbi Azulai answers that this seemingly redundant Pasuk illustrates Avraham Avinu’s absolute dedication to Hashem’s Will. No regular person would leave his homeland without a pilot trip first. Avraham Avinu, however, was not a regular person. As soon as Hashem instructed him to go to Eretz Canaan, he decided without hesitation to follow His command. Therefore, to convey Avraham’s unsurpassed dedication and commitment, the Torah portrays his decision in terms of its obvious outcome, as if it had already happened. Avraham’s ability to selflessly follow Hashem’s command did not materialize out of thin air, rather it stemmed from his unwavering belief in Hashem’s Oneness. Avraham realised that declaring “Hashem is One” meant declaring that nothing exists outside of Him, including Avraham himself. Avraham completely subjugated himself to Hashem’s Will, but not because he saw that it was in his best interest, rather because he understood that his existence was purely for that purpose. Hashem’s Unity is not just about rejecting statues and so-called deities, rather, each time we recite “Shema Yisroel” and state that “Hashem is One,” we are proclaiming that we have no independent existence outside of Him. We are essentially pledging

Canaan) but a journey by G-d’s command. Not only was the destination G-d’s will, not only was the land of Canaan the mission, but also the journey was G-d’s will. If Avraham had known in advance where to go, he would have drawn a map that would have guided him on how to reach his destination. Instead, he needs guidance on where to go. From here we learn, that not only are the results important in life but also the way in which we arrive at the results. Not just the goal and the destination, but how you reach the goal. Do you reach it in a crooked way, by trampling another, or do you reach it in the way of G-d, in a moral way, in a way of holiness and purity? OFF ON MY TRAVELS

It has been so long since people could travel freely. Some airlines are at work, most are grounded. Sea travel by means of cruise ships is a worry. Hopefully everyone is davening for the defeat of the virus and the return of what we fondly call normalcy. In the meantime we have a narrative to read this Shabbat which speaks of Abraham setting out for a destination which G-d will show him. He soon discovers the good – and the bad – points of travel. The Midrash Tehillim says on Psalm 23, “Travel is hard on your clothes, your person and your purse”. All this is true, but if you understand Abraham and his travels metaphorically you know there are no problems. The itinerary is in the hands of G-d. He decides on the destination. He tells Abraham that the travel is necessary. Why? Because embarking on a G-d-given task brings purpose and energy into one’s life. You can have that feeling even when you stay home and only your mind roams.

THE WEATHER WAS HARD

Why did G-d want Abraham to leave home? Malbim says that there were aspects of Abraham’s homeland which he had to escape. It was not only the cultural influences

in which the patriarch was living which were not good for him or his family. The physical characteristics of the country were also problematical. The air was impure, the soil was poor quality, the trees and plants were unpleasant, the sun was too fierce and the rain was a problem. All in all, it was not a country where righteous people should live. Malbim adds that G-d was like a vinekeeper who needed the brains to transplant his vines to another area where the air, soil and neighbouring plants would be purer and more fertile. G-d assured Abraham that he should not be frightened about moving countries; if he migrated he would enjoy the blessing.

NOACH OR ABRAHAM?

Who was better, Noach or Abraham? Both. Noach was good in himself but he lived in a challenging generation – the moral man in an immoral situation. Life was especially difficult for him because no-one before him had ever faced up to this problem. It was a hard struggle, but in the end the Torah had to conclude that Noach “walked with G-d”. Abraham was also a good man whose environment was not always conducive to righteousness, but he had the advantage of knowing the story of Noach and was steeled by Noach’s example and able to

29 OCTOBER 2020

struggle for morality in the knowledge that if No’ah could do it, so could he. The Torah said about Abraham that he walked “before” (ahead of) G-d. The Almighty could trust him… precisely because there had been a Noach to set the example.

A LAND REBORN

Great promises made to Abraham figure prominently in the sidra. There is a promise that his descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth (Gen. 13:16) or the stars in the sky (Gen. 15:5). There is also a promise, “For all the land which you see, to you will I give it and to your descendants forever” (Gen. 13:15). It is a small land. Not quite as small as the tiny European nations that are the size of a handkerchief. But though it can fit into Wales or Tasmania, it is a land of immense contrast – snow in the north, desert in the south. It is a land of amazing beauty; what the sages say about Jerusalem could be extended to the land as a whole, “Ten measures of beauty descended upon earth; nine were taken by Jerusalem” (Kiddushin 49b). It is a productive land, though without the effort and ingenuity of the pioneers few would have thought the desert would bloom and the land become green. But what really matters about Israel is not simply its physical features but the way it fulfils you as a Jew. There is an ambiguity about Jewish identity in the Diaspora. If a person wants to live and learn as a Jew in Israel, on the other hand, it is as natural as breathing the air. True, there are

problems in Israel, tensions between Jewish ideologies, suspicion between the secular and the religious, a generally threadbare presentation of Judaism in the general school system – but there are also genuine, sincere people who are working to narrow the gaps and find solutions to the problems. There are also amazing personalities who are unafraid to think unconventionally about issues of faith, ethics and identity. And there are respected institutions that yield to no-one in their loyalty to halachah whilst also addressing the role and status of women. A truly exciting moment to live in a truly inspiring Jewish homeland. And a good time to visit. This week we present some common applications of Lash and how one should go about food preparation avoiding its prohibitions. Egg, onion and oil: - A common starter course at the Shabbat lunch. Many Halachic authorities ruled that one should ideally prepare the grated eggs, onion and oil (or mayonnaise for that matter) before Shabbat. This is because these ingredients form a solid mixture, not a loose one. However, as there are others who are concerned with leaving shelled eggs and peeled onions overnight (for reasons not connected to the laws of Shabbat) there is room to be lenient and prepare this mixture on Shabbat day provided that:

THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM

They first place the oil (or other joining liquid) then place the egg in the mixture AND they stir it in an unusual manner (as described in last week’s column). It is forbidden to make Jelly or other puddings out of powder on Shabbat. The reason for the prohibition of Jelly is due to Lash according to some and due to “Molid” (transforming a material) according to others. When preparing Weetabix one should first pour in the milk and then the Weetabix and then stir it in an unusual manner as explained. The usual method of preparing certain types of baby cereals is to first pour in the liquid and only then the solid. That being the case, on Shabbat one does the reverse and first places the solid and then the liquid, and ensures that enough liquid is poured in so that a loose consistency results. Mixing tiny pieces of fish with mayonnaise or other sauce is prohibited as they form a solid mixture. Mixing vegetables such as potatoes or peas with mayonnaise is permitted so long as the pieces are of substantial size so that they don’t lose their independent entity and form a solid mixture. (Cutting vegetables into very small pieces on Shabbat may involve a further Melacha of Tochen.)

Lech Lecha

Lech Lecha Word Search

If you like travelling you’ll love Lech Lecha! The Parsha opens with Hashem’s historic instruction Avram. “Leave the house of your father and go to the land that I shall show you.” The land turns out to be the future Eretz Yisrael but there was a famine there so he was forced to travel with his wife and entourage down to Egypt. There he has a negative experience with the king, who then rewards him with loads of animals and precious materials. They then travel back towards the Promised Land. Then we have Avram and Lot spitting up. Lot heads to Sodom and when he is later caught up in a war there, Avram comes to save him and the city. Avram is saddened that he and Sarai have no children so Hashem promises him a son. They found the possibility so funny the baby’s name was therefore “Yitzchak” which has a root word “to laugh”! Finally Avram marries Hagar; they have a child named Yishmael and Hashem gives Avram the first opportunity to perform the holy Mitzvah of Brit Mila which he performed notwithstanding his old age. He also gives Yishmael a Brit and next week we learn all about the baby born to a VERY old couple.

Lech Lecha

In a nutshell Lech Lecha is all about travels. It starts with our ancestor Avram, being told by Hashem to leave the place of his birth and head towards the land of Cana’an, where he would be a source of blessing. The influence at home is no good, and Avram must take Sarai and Lot and all the other people they have drawn near to Hashem and head to the holy land. Did they immediately find blessing there? No! There was a famine. Sometimes, one needs to wait to see how their good deeds bear fruit. Given that there was real hunger in Cana’an Avram is forced to head down to Egypt where he attempts to hide his beautiful wife from the prying eyes of Pharaoh’s customs officers, to no avail. Sarai is taken captive to Pharaoh, but G-d doesn’t allow this to succeed and plagues Pharaoh and the entire house. Needless to say, Pharaoh regrets his move and handsomely rewards Avram for taking his handsome wife and off they return to Israel. Now that they were very rich, they needed somewhere

to settle all their cattle. Lot cast his eyes over Sodom and Amorah and thought it to be a suitable place for his material interests. This was not the case for his spiritual interests though and one needs to consider carefully where one chooses to live and not place their money before their mind. There was a war between four kings on one side and five on the other and Avram was aware that Lot was caught in battle, so he heads off to save him and his country. The king of Sodom offers Avram more handsome benefits for his warrior services but Avram refuses. Not even a shoelace or a thread. We wouldn’t want the king of Sodom to become (more) arrogant thinking that he made Avram wealthy. It’s nice having lots of money and cattle, but having children means much more to people. What was it all worth if Avram had no heir – no continuation of his legacy? Hashem tells him to go outside and see if he can

count the stars – which he obviously could not. “Your offspring will be likewise too numerous to count!” says Hashem. Avram believes Hashem but is then foretold of the eventual exile of his descendants in a land that is not theirs (i.e. Egypt) but they too would leave with a lot of wealth. Much of what happened to our ancestors happened and happens to us too. Sarai had a maidservant, Hagar and gave her to Avram in marriage. When Hagar was expecting a child, Sarai was disapproving of Hagar’s haughty attitude. Hagar had to flee. An Angel tells Hagar that she would have a child that she should name Yishmael. Towards the end of the Parsha, G-d renames Avram to Avraham and Sarai to Sarah and assures them tha they will have a son. He is given the Mitzva of Brit Milah, which he performs – despite his VERY old age, on himself and his son Yishmael.

Five-star Maccabi top league as Oakwood stun HMH BY DAVID SAFFER Maccabi London FC head the Premier League after a five-star display against North London Galaxy at Rowley Lane. Max Kyte’s team won 5-1 and have an opportunity to show their championship credentials when they host title favourites HMH on Sunday. Maccabi are three points clear of HMH after Avi Goldberg’s side suffered a shock 4-1 home defeat against Oakwood. Benji Weinberger and Zak Berg opened up an early lead for the hosts before Galaxy hit back with a long-range Josh Shack effort, only for Charlie Dryer to fire home from close range for a 3-1 lead. Mikey Perkins and Rafi Rees completed a terrific win for Maccabi. “The boys were fantastic for the 90 minutes,” said Kyte. “Our attitude and work rate were superb throughout.” Regarding Sunday’s top of the table clash, Kyte noted, “It will be the toughest game of our season, we know how good HMH are and the quality of football they play. There’s no denying they are league favourites and will want to bounce back from their game against Oakwood. We expect them to be raring to go from the first whistle.” “We battled well for 60 minutes, but ultimately heads dropped after a few errors and led to goals,” commented Luke Lewis. “Nonetheless, we will be back stronger against Jewdinese on Sunday.” Oakwood came from behind to stun HMH at the Hive and move into a share of third place in the table. Oscar Wagner opened the scoring for the hosts before Oakwood hit back with a brilliant second half display capped off by a Brad Wine hat-trick and Louie Basso strike. “Everyone played a pivotal role in this win,” said O’s boss Lewis Blitz. “Obviously, it’s fantastic to score against a team in the form that HMH are in. But, what was more impressive was the way we dominated and stopped them playing any football. We restricted HMH to one real effort on goal which they scored from. Besides that, we were never really troubled.” Blitz added, “We are gelling as a team so it’s exciting to think what we can achieve this season, but we need to take that same level of effort, desire and motivation into every game.” “It was a deserved win for Oakwood who turned in an excellent second half performance to turn the game around,” noted HMH’s Goldberg. Division One league leaders Borussia Barnet made it four consecutive wins with a 2-0 triumph against Paris Saint Jewmain to open up a five-point lead in the table. “It was a tough game against a good side, the boys put in a very spirited performance and on another day with a bit more quality up front, we could have got something out of the game,” commented PSJ’s Elio Elia. “There is still a lot more to come from this team.” Faithfold Green, playing their second league fixture, picked up a win, shocking second place Mill Hill Dons with an Oli

Richardson solo effort. Faithfold’s Ben Kfir was delighted with his team’s performance. “The one goal margin doesn’t reflect our dominance,” he said. “We controlled the game, played passing football and defended brilliantly. We limited a good side to one or two half chances. But we failed to capitalise and put the game to bed, so that is where we need to improve in training.” Hertswood Vale enjoyed a first league win with a thumping 8-1 victory against Temple Fortune who remain pointless. Vale were determined to build on disappointing draws from opening fixtures after not playing in the league for a month. Morrow struck the first on six minutes, catching Fortune’s ‘keeper unaware direct from a corner. A dominant first half saw Vale double the lead on 35 minutes through Winton’s first goal for the club. Mandel then nodded a third at the back post from a Morrow corner before half time. Millet slotted home a penalty after Harry Graham was fouled in the box on the hour. Fortune grabbed a consolation before Vale hit four more goals in the last 15 minutes. Millet’s first hat-trick of the season was deserved, Gorb, setting up second half strikes. Millet returned the favour for Gorb, Jordan Harris then forced an own goal. “It was a professional performance from the boys,” commented Emmanual. “We’re finally up and running. That’s 22 goals scored in our last three games, including a friendly versus Spec. The goals are being shared across the team and we’re playing fantastic football.” London Bears moved alongside FC Team in a share of second spot courtesy of 1-0 win. “We weren’t good enough all round,” noted FC’s Jonathan Pearl. Club de Chigwell picked up a first win of the season in a five-goal thriller against Brook Farm Rovers to climb off the foot of the table. The hosts led 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from Jamie Rones and Taylor Bedworth only for Rovers to hit back with strikes from Simon Zeffert and Sam Georgevic. With the match up for grabs, Stanley Offord crossed for Rones to hit the winner late on from close range. “The game could have gone either way,” commented Chigwell’s Joshua Dobias. “Credit to Rovers who got back into the game from two goals down. “ “We struggled with their aggression in the first half but then controlled the game and scored two quick goals,” said Rovers’ Tomer Tricot. “We began to dominate but failed to convert our chances. It’s a hard loss to take but one we have learned a lot from.” NWL Azzurri edged past Redbridge Jewish Care 3-2 to move alongside Stoke Salmon at the top of Division Two.
