Around 160 Balfour Declaration celebrations are taking place across the country this week. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in London on Wednesday for a series of events to mark the centenary of the 1917 Balfour Declaration, when the British Government expressed its support for the creation of a Jewish national home. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will attend several events including a dinner with British Prime Minister Theresa May. Mrs May has said that Britain should mark the centenary “with pride,” whilst Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called the declaration “indispensable to the creation of a great nation.” At Sunday’s weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said the Declaration “started the international
movements that led to Israel’s establishment… The state would not have been established without settlement, without the sacrifice and without the willingness to fight for it, but the international setting in motion was without doubt the Balfour Declaration.” The Knesset will also commemorate the centenary of the Declaration at a ceremony next week, which members of the Joint List have announced they will boycott. The historic New West End Synagogue in West London was honoured to host a special ceremony for almost 600 people last Sunday with a concept of ‘Hakarat Hatov,’ (gratitude). The New West End is one of the oldest synagogues in the UK and given that Lord Rothchild, Herbert Samuel and the first Israeli President Chaim Weizmann were members of the Synagogue, it was a fitting setting to host the event

No one can doubt Rabbi Mirvis’

Next the Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev pointed out in clear and simple language, that the Israeli Arab community living in Israel are the only Arab community throughout the greater Middle East that has consistently enjoyed both civil and religious rights. “In what
Panic at Stamford Hill Shul
A man armed with a knife was arrested after storming into the Satmar Shul in Stamford Hill, London. According to Yeshiva World News, at around 5:00PM on Wednesday, while a minyan was davening Shemoneh Esrei, two men suddenly ran into the Shul located at Cazenove Road, and began jumping over benches and screaming. The two men did not actually touch anyone in the Shul, and claimed they were running from people. Shomrim and Police arrived seconds later and began talking to the two men. While talking to them, one of the individuals attempted to run away. He was easily apprehended. Police frisked the suspect, and he was found to be in possession of
a large knife. It does not appear to be an anti-Semitic incident, and police believe the two men were running away from gangs.

Mr Regev closed his talk by saying “that you can be proud of Britain’s role in helping to establish the State of Israel and you can be proud of the State of Israel which over the last 70 years has built a strong, vibrant, free, democratic Jewish state.” Chazan Jonathan Ben Garcia conducted the ceremony, accompanied by Mosaic Voices, the Choir of the New West End Synagogue and Musical Director, Michael Etherton. Manhattan Terror Attack: Deadliest in New York since 9/11 BY DAVID SAFFER
Eight victims have been killed in the Manhattan terror attack which occured on Tuesday afternoon. Yeshiva World News (YWN) announced on Tuesday that one of the victims, Ariel Erlich, a 48-yearold Argentinian steel industry businessman, was believed to be Jewish. However on Wednesday evening, YWN confirmed that Erlich was in fact not Jewish. Police shot the Uzbekistan suspect, named in the media as Sayfullo Saipov. Saipov is in custody and has undergone surgery. He has now been charged with terrorism offences. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the carnage declared his solidarity with US President Donald Trump stating, “together we will defeat terrorism.” President Trump was briefed in the White House about the deadliest atrocity to hit the city since the September 11 2001 ‘Twin Towers’ terror attack and instructed the Department of Homeland Security to “step up” the Extreme Vetting Program. Turning to Twitter, he said, “We must not allow ISIS [Islamic State] to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!” In another tweet, he noted, “In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!” Pope Francis condemned recent attacks in New York, Afghanistan and Somalia. He said militants were abusing the name of G-d to justify their violence. “I am profoundly saddened by the terrorist attacks in these recent days in Somalia, Afghanistan and yesterday in New York,” he stated in the media. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined New York City police department to investigate the incident in which at least a further 12 people were injured. The 29-year-old suspect, who came to the US on a diversity visa, ploughed down a bicycle path in a rented pick-up truck into pedestrians and cyclists in lower Manhattan. Police say notes have been recovered from the scene claiming the attack was on behalf of the Islamic IS group. Saipov has lived in the US since 2010 residing in Tampa, Florida and New Jersey. Mr Erlich was among five
Argentinians celebrating the 30th anniversary since graduating from the Polytechnic Institute of Rosario. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev offered help in a letter of condolence to Trump posted on his country’s Foreign Ministry’s website. He condemned the attack as “extremely brutal”, noting there could be no justification for such violence. “From our side, we are ready to use all our power and resources to cooperate in the investigation of this terrorist act,” Mirziyoyev penned. “We express our solidarity with the US people.” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described the Manhattan attack as a “cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians.”
“This action was intended to break our spirit but New Yorkers are strong and resilient, our spirit will never be moved by an act of violence meant to intimidate us,” he said. Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “appalled by what happened.” Richard Verber, Board of Deputies Vice President, noted, “We stand in solidarity with all New Yorkers and remain firm in our resolve to defeat the scourge of global terrorism.” “Our hearts go out to the people of New York following the heinous terrorist attack.” NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill described the attack at a news briefing to the media. The rented truck travelled along the West Street section of the West Side Highway, starting from

Israel destroys tunnel from Gaza The Israel Defence Forces announced that they destroyed a tunnel being built to gain access to Israel from Gaza. The tunnel, which could have been used to launch a terror attack, is thought to have started in Khan Younis. The IDF asses that the tunnel was built after the 2014 conflict. The tunnel extended several metres into Israeli territory, ending a mile away from Kibbutz Kissufim. The IDF described it as a “grave and unacceptable violation
of Israeli sovereignty”. Following the destruction of the tunnel, it is reported that at least seven Palestinian operatives were killed and another 12 injured. Most of those killed apparently died in the rescue operation that followed the explosions that destroyed the tunnel. This makes it the deadliest incident since Operation Protective Edge in Summer 2014. The IDF clarified that the tunnel, not the operatives, were the target. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin

Netanyahu said that new “breakthrough technology” gave the IDF the ability to locate the tunnel. In response to the incident, Hamas called the Israeli strike a “dangerous escalation against our people” and said it was “a desperate attempt to sabotage efforts to restore Palestinian unity”. In a statement, Hamas said: “We affirm that resisting the occupation, in all its forms and through the use of various tools, is a natural and guaranteed right of our people.” According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza, four of the dead were Islamic Jihad members. This includes two senior commanders, Arafat Abu Murshad, Islamic Jihad’s central Gaza commander and his deputy Hassan Abu Hassanein. The other three were named as Ahmad Khalil Abu Armana, 25, Omar Nasar

al-Fallit, 27, and Jihad Abdullah al-Samiri, 32. In addition, two Hamas members, Musbah Shabir, 30 and Mujahid Mohammed Marwan Algha, were killed during the rescue operation. Islamic Jihad leader Khaled al-Batash threatened revenge against Israel and said: “This is
a massacre… All our options are open. We will take all considerations into account, but we will not allow the enemy to set the rules of engagement.” The IDF said it “does not intend to escalate the situation but stands prepared for a variety of scenarios.”

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) have vowed to retaliate and rebuild a tunnel into Israel in order to kidnap Israeli citizens after the IDF destroyed a tunnel earlier this week. At least seven Palestinian operatives from Hamas and PIJ were killed and a further 12 injured after the IDF uncovered and destroyed a tunnel being built to gain access to Israel from Gaza. Writing in Yediot Ahronot and citing a senior military source, Elior Levy says that “a rescue force entered the tunnel to extricate people trapped inside after being wounded in the blast and was hit by a secondary blast likely caused by the igniting of explosive materials inside”. The IDF Spokesperson seemed to confirm that the majority of the fatalities were incurred during the Palestinian rescue operation due to “side effects that occur in such situations in a tunnel, such as falling debris, smoke and dust”. Funerals were held yesterday for the deceased Hamas and PIJ operatives, at which senior Islamic Jihad operatives committed to dig another tunnel into Israel for “kidnapping soldiers in order to free prisoners,” as PIJ operative Khaled al-Batsh said. He added: “When you kill the sons of our people, then it is right to respond, blood for blood, we will continue to bear our arms, and we won’t let anyone take them away from us.”
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Hamas political office head Ismail Haniyeh responded by saying that “the response to this massacre is to move forward toward the restoration of national unity”. IDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Ronen Manelis sought to clarify that the operation had not been “a targeted assassination” and that the target had been the tunnel itself, not the operatives. Education Minister Naftali Bennett said: “We must not apologise for the successful elimination of terrorists. These were terrorists who were digging a tunnel into Israel that was intended to kill Israeli women and children.” In response, Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman rebuked Bennet, saying that “a briefing by the IDF Spokesperson should not be used as a pretext for a blatant attack on the IDF and its commanders”.

Battle of Beer Sheva centenary events held Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnball and New Zealand Governor-General Patsy Reddy are visiting Israel to mark the centenary of the battle of Beer Sheva where the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) defeated the Ottoman army during the First World War campaign for Palestine. On Monday Turnball and Reddy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on bilateral security cooperation with Israel. The MOU focuses on cooperation between the countries security industries and includes articles on strengthening inter-governmental ties. Earlier this week they attended a memorial service in Beer Sheva for the fallen soldiers of WWI. The Battle of Beer Sheva is remembered as the last great cavalry charge in military history with 800 Australian Light Horsemen capturing more than 700 Turkish soldiers. Thirty-one Australian soldiers were killed. At the ceremony Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “we
are remembering an act of courage that changed history. The indomitable spirit of the soldiers of New Zealand here and the Australian Light Horse right there changed history. It is something that didn’t take very long, only a few hours, but the pivot, the hinge of fate moved at that point”. Netanyahu also took the opportunity to give credit to the Jewish spy network NILI, and the contribution of Sara and Aaron Aaronson to the war effort, saying that “the British assessment was that because of the contribution of Aaronsohn, tens of thousands of lives were saved. And Sara Aaronson, who took her life under severe torture, rather than spill out these secrets, we remember too”. Turnball said of the Australian Light Horse that “like the State of Israel has done ever since, they defied history and with their courage they fulfilled history. Lest we forget”. As part of the commemoration 100 descendants of the soldiers who fought in the battle staged a re-enactment of the charge.

Israel’s Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and the Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah met earlier this week amid revelations of US efforts to advance peace talks. According to Army Radio, Kahlon was joined by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) Major General Yoav Mordechai and Majid Faraj, Director of the Palestinian Intelligence Services. PA Finance Minister Shukri Bishara and PA Civil Affairs Minister Hussein al-Sheikh also attended, according to Palestinian sources. The meeting is thought to be part of US special envoy Jason Greenblatt’s initiative to advance economic cooperation between Israel and the PA. Former head of COGAT, Maj.-Gen. Eitan Dangot, said on Army Radio that “a strong economy brings security and vice versa,” adding that US President Donald Trump understands this and is acting wisely. Politico Magazine reported earlier this week that Jared Kushner secretly visited Saudi Arabia last week to promote negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. He was accompanied by Greenblatt and
US Deputy National Security Adviser Dina Powell. Kushner returned to the US while Greenblatt held meetings in the region, including with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman yesterday afternoon in Jerusalem. In related news, several former Israeli members of Knesset from the Parliament of Peace Forum met PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah yesterday evening. Abbas reportedly said that he would not appoint Hamas ministers to the newly-agreed Palestinian unity government if they refuse to recognise Israel Amram Mitzna, former Labour leader 2002-2003 said that Abbas expressed optimism about US President Trump and believes the US will announce support for the two-state solution soon. Abbas also said that he was unwilling to accept the continued existence of the PA without a serious attempt to establish a Palestinian state and warned that if there were no progress in the peace process, he would return the keys to Netanyahu.
Jewish Agency discuss Western Wall with Israeli Government Regional Cooperation Minister Tzachi Hanegbi and the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency yesterday visited Robinson’s Arch at southern section of the Western Wall. During the visit Hanegbi said that the government would not fully implement the January 2016 agreement for egalitarian prayer at the Western Wall by building a common entranceway to be shared by the Western Wall’s various areas. Hanegbi did promise to change the visual appearance of the egalitarian prayer space adding that the government has allocated NIS 17m (£3.7m) to improve it. He said that while a formal
Government decision wasn’t possible Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is determined to continue to develop the egalitarian prayer space at the Western Wall and is working toward that goal. Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky said that “we have seen no progress on any of these issues since the government’s regrettable decision in June, and no directions toward progress were evident today. What was frozen four months ago remains frozen”. After four years of negotiations in January 2016 Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government agreed to create a larger, state-recognised egalitarian section in the
southern part of the Western Wall. It was also agreed this area would be administered by a committee including non-orthodox Conservative and Reform synagogues, the Jewish Federation of North America, the Jewish Agency and the Israeli Government. In June 2017 the plan was suspended by the government because of opposition from the ultra-Orthodox parties in the governing coalition.

Balfour Event held in Manchester Dear Editor, Part of the shine was taken off the Manchester “Balfour 100” celebration event held in the Hilton in Manchester on Monday 31st October. Not by the speakers or attendees I might add, but by the members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign who turned out to demonstrate, shout, harass attendees and generally make a nuisance of themselves. Not only were some of the attendees spat on by these people as they entered the hotel, but prior to the event starting, a smoke bomb was thrown at the hotel entrance by one of the on-street miscreants. According to Israeli Ambassador, Mark Regev, what these people demonstrating about Balfour don’t realise by not reading the small print within the Declaration itself, shouting down any of our Balfour celebrations is in essence shouting down the very existence of Israel - in other words, calling for its destruction. This is a very far cry indeed from supporting the Palestinians, which according to their mission statement is allegedly all they supposedly exist to do. Through their anti-social and anti-democratic actions, they prove time and time again that the welfare of Palestinians is actually as far from their thoughts and actions as it possibly can be. That having been said, the evening’s speeches were inspirational, and it was wonderful to hear not only the Israeli Ambassador speak, but also Lord Balfour, Baroness Deech (who stole the podium with a truly heartfelt outpouring against anti-Semitism and Jewhate), Simon Johnson, Lord Kestenbaum and Richard Verber, amongst others. The few protesters outside showed themselves up as the true anti-Semities they indeed are, who seek nothing but the destruction of the one, single liberal democracy in the Middle East, namely, Israel.

The Big Weekend
Shabbat UK events took place up and down the country last weekend where Jewish people, many for the first time, were introduced to an experience of true observance of Shabbat with inspirational prayer, delicious food, song and words of Torah. Among the many programmes that took place across the country was a singles event for 25-35 year olds organised by Rabbi Eli Pink from the Leeds, Chabad Lubavitch, in conjunction with Chabad Young
Professionals International. Some 80 enthusiastic participants arrived at the 16th century country mansion in Warwickshire, once owned by Lord Field and the entertainer Danny La Rue, in an effort to meet a Jewish partner and experience an authentic Shabbat atmosphere. Chabad Lubavitch of Leeds, who partners with Keren Meromin set up several conference rooms throughout the hotel including a shul, relaxing lounge, a dining
room and a large room for a speed dating experience on Shabbat afternoon. The programme began with Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat prayers, followed by a cocktail Kiddush for half an hour before the The Big Friday night dinner which saw French magician Nicholas Clement visit each table with a private performance. The entertainment continued late. After Shacharit the following morning, a Kiddush brunch was

More food was then on offer during a two-hour lunch until the speed dating session took centre stage later in the day. Immediately after Minchah, a discussion panel consisting of Rabbis Eli Pink and Yossi Simon from Golders Green, along with their respective wives took place, where participants could ask questions on any topic of their choice. Religious rapper Ari Lesser was flown in from the US to perform on
Saturday night alongside another large malava malva meal and the Big Breakfast the following morning left participants thinking they were ready to now fast! Organiser Rabbi Eli Pink felt the weekend was “an amazing success” and he plans to arrange a similar weekend in the future. “We were privileged to be surrounded by young men and women who were making an effort to meet a Jewish partner. We feel the weekend was an amazing success. Chabad Young Professionals are looking at making regional reunions and another weekend in 18-24 months time .”

Holocaust heritage and learning centre captures Yorkshire’s stories Due to open in 2018 at the University of Huddersfield, the new Holocaust Heritage and Learning Centre will attract thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond, taking people on a journey from the rise of the Nazis in Germany, the occupation of Europe, through to Germany’s surrender in 1945. The story of the Holocaust, how it happened, the impact on people’s lives and its relevance for today will be told through an exhibition featuring historical artefacts and the stories of those who experienced it, many
of whom settled in Yorkshire. One such man is Heinz Skyte, who narrowly escaped the atrocities of Kristallnacht (Night of the Broken Glass) and recounts the turbulent times leading up to 1939, describing horrifying memories of torch-wielding Nazis lining the streets, burning synagogues and seeing his father sent to Dachau concentration camp for no other reason than because he was Jewish. Pictured here lending his letters, photographs and documents, some of the precious few personal items
Heinz Skyte looking at historical artefacts
he managed to escape Germany with, Mr Skyte shares his story: “To the visitors who come here this is perhaps just history, but to me it is my life. It is very important for me to share these items with the centre, as they are evidence for the events of the Holocaust. One of these documents is a letter from my wife’s headmaster written in 1938 when she was a young girl, banning her from the school, solely based on her Jewish faith. Another is a heartfelt note from my mother to her parents at the time they were sent to Theresienstadt concentration camp, where they sadly died just two weeks later. These items don’t just teach people of what happened, but of how genocide, in all its horror, quickly become acceptable to so many. I just hope that the people of Yorkshire and beyond will make the visit to the new Centre to understand it better. Everybody thought the Holocaust was unique, and everybody said “never again”, but it’s still happening. We have still got ethnic cleansing, and that’s why it’s important that British youngsters know about what happened

and that by learning from it, generations to come will prevent it from ever happening again.” The centre has already received support from a host of benefactors, including funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund in excess of £600,000. The scheme, which is backed by the University of Huddersfield, Pears Foundation and The Association of Jewish Refugees has also received support from notable regional businesses including Shulmans LLP, A UK top 200 law firm based in Leeds. Simon Jackson, Head of Commercial Property at Shulmans who has been assisting the Holocaust Survivors Friendship Association on this Project, said: “The victims of the Holocaust suffered horrendously, most did not survive so recording the details of eye witnesses still with us is vitally important. Whilst having a considerable amount of understanding and knowledge of events prior to getting involved in this project, working with the team has been an enlightening process. “The work for us started several years ago and continues in the lead up to the opening, something Shulmans has been happy to do pro bono. We are impressed to see what lengths the centre’s dedicated staff and leadership team are going to in
order to ensure its authenticity, particularly the work of HSFA Chair, Lilian Black. Her strength of character, along with the survivors and their families that form The Holocaust Survivors Friendship Association, has helped get this project over the line, which will pass on the knowledge to thousands of people across the region.” Emma King, the Centres director, added: “Over 70 years on since the end of the Holocaust, we must capture these accounts and preserve them, to ensure they are not lost forever. Todays meeting with Heinz has been incredibly humbling and adds priceless detail to our archive collection, all of which will be located at our centre in Huddersfield to educate and inform countless generations to come. We couldn’t have reached this point without the support of our many benefactors, including Shulmans who are with us today to witness the great work that they’ve helped us achieve.”

Barnet Synagogue Shabbat UK
An amazing and uplifting Shabbat UK in Barnet Synagogue kicked off with a Challa Make on Thursday evening. Over 100 women took part in the main Challa Make with Rebbetzin Naomi Lerer and 25 men made their Challa (and enjoyed some whisky) under Rabbinic Supervision with Rabbi Lerer. The Friday night service was led by singer/ songwriter and rapper Ari Lesser. Ari led the service in his own inimitable style and entertained the 190 strong community who sat down for a sumptuous Shabbat Friday night meal together. On Shabbat morning Ari rapped a phenomenal sermon in the main service that had the community mesmerised. He also visited the Children’s services with raps about Kosher animals. In the afternoon, members enjoyed activities and hospitality in 8 homes across the community based on countries around the world. Over 220 members of the community assembled for Seudah Shlishit, where Chief Rabbi Mirivs and Valerie were the special guests. The Barnet Kids Choir sang three songs they had prepared especially for Shabbat UK. The Chief Rabbis uplifting words about Shabbat inspired the community. The Shabbat ended with a beautiful musical

David’s Shows are Pure Magic!! David Carmel, otherwise known as David the Magician, is the only frum Jewish magician in London with over 30 years’ experience, and has done literally thousands of performances over those years. Starting professionally as a teenager, he has built up a business that specialises in customer satisfaction- and at a competitive rate. “I still get the same buzz out of performing that I did 40 years’ ago, as a child doing tricks for my family and friends”, David says, “there’s a special enjoyment that comes from making
children laugh, and I get a different sort of pleasure from doing sophisticated sleight of hand for adults, and fooling and entertaining themand my audiences respond to this”. David started out young, after inheriting a box of tricks from his older sister, then gradually bought more professional tricks and started doing paid shows together with a friend, eventually having private lessons from a member of the prestigious Inner Magic Circle to sharpen his sleight of hand skills. It is this skill, together with his funny and likeable personality, that he brings to his performances.
Dominique and Mark spend their very first date delivering food parcels together for charity GIFT! Dominique started volunteering for GIFT just over a year ago, when she was going through a difficult time in her own life. Ironically, It was the “act of giving” and helping others that helped her! When her now husband was late for their first date, he phoned her to explain that he was delivering food parcels for GIFT recipients and was delayed. She joined him delivering the parcels and was so inspired that she began to volunteer herself. ‘ I really began to appreciate how much effort and time people take out of their lives to help others, and just how many people within the community that need our help! I began to do food deliveries and volunteer my time helping families that needed support and really felt “my giving” helped make a huge difference.’ Dominique continues ‘We do not realise the difference a charity like GIFT has on so many families... helping with general support, education, respite for parents, food deliveries, Bnei Mitzva projects,
Shabbat Walk, visiting patients in hospital and care homes.’ Dominique and Mark have dedicated their lives to volunteering and have inspired their friends to volunteer too! To volunteer your time please email volunteer@jgift.org or phone 0208 457 4429
He offers the options of an hour-long formal children’s show which includes Magic, Juggling, Plate-spinning and Balloon-modelling (and of course plenty of shouting out, comedy, and prizes for volunteers!), party games, workshops in juggling or balloon modelling, or just making balloons, or for adults, a sophisticated and funny scripted act performed ‘close up’ going around the tables, suitable for any Simcha. “I have performed over the years at private parties, schools and shuls, and for almost any age and type of audience- the elderly,
learning disabled, physically disabled, and children from challenging backgrounds”, he says, “My shows are suitable for any level of religious observance- recently I performed for Belzer Chassidim, and they loved it!”. Because David is comfortable working his magic on both children and adults, this gives someone organising a Simcha the peace of mind that comes from knowing that he has the flexibility to respond to any need at a given time, should the host wish him to switch between the two styles.
In his ‘other life’, David works as a Shammas for Hendon United Shul, and for a computer companyhe enjoys these too, though they do provide a marked contrast to his Magic shows! “I guess I bring professionalism from these roles to my Magic, and people have remarked that it’s an interesting combination, but nothing brings out my personality quite like a good show!” www.davids-magic.com 07903 941259
Southend and Westcliff Ladies Guild Celebrity Lunch 120 were in attendance, when Southend and Westcliff Ladies Guild welcomed Lord and Lady Gold and the impresario, Lord Michael Grade Lord Gold spoke of his meeting with Lord Grade in the House of Lords and how all members were entertained by his wonderful anecdotes about people he had met and worked with. Lord Grade then recalled how his grandmother had instilled a strong work ethic into his father Leslie and his two uncles, Lew and Bernard all of whom became synonymous with show b u s i n e s s . He explained how he too had developed this working
policy and hoped he had instilled the same with his children. He went on to say he has “42 Street” playing in the West End and is hoping to bring “Chess” to London for a short season in the New Year. He told many interesting stories, one of which was about Glenn Close, who being cast
as Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard” when it returned to London for a limited season, developed a chest infection and could not appear. After 4 nights with the understudy, Michael’s partner spoke to Glenn Close and told her not to rush back and recuperate and that her stand-in had received a 3 minute ovation and not to rush things. After putting the phone down his partner then had a phone call back from Glenn Close saying she would be back the next night as “her public needed her!” Lord Grade said “No star act wants to be threatened by an understudy!”

ShabbatUK gets inclusive BY JW REPORTER This year ShabbatUK was truly a project for everyone, with communities and organisations across the UK designing ShabbatUK events that facilitated participation for those with special needs and learning disabilities. ShabbatUK worked together with The Judith Trust an organisation which aims to close the gap for all those with learning disabilities, to create an inclusive challah making guide that would be used throughout every single of the 100 challah makes across the UK that could be used by everyone. The challah recipes were carefully considered and laid out in the guide with expert explanations, pictures and directions. Many other charities got involved with ShabbatUK including Norwood who held a combined Challah Make with Jewish Care to celebrate ShabbatUK. Both Norwood Kennedy Leigh family Centre and Gesher School, which provides a specialist meaningful learning environment for children with special educational need, hosted Challah Makes for their students together with a visit from the ShabbatUK ice cream van. benefitted from a visual schedule to follow and were encouraged to take breaks when necessary if it was too overwhelming. In efforts to cater for the needs of participants with hearing loss and visual impairment, Kinloss Finchley United Synagogue provided sign interpreted assistance to enable all participants, including those from the Jewish Deaf Association, to knead and braid their Challot with flair at their community challah make. In addition to the Inclusive challah make, the volunteer team at Kinloss organised a unique experience for the youth, entitled: ‘if Looks could talk…lip read for your youth lunch’, which included members of the deaf community engaging with the young through education and fun lip-reading experiences. Langdon, which supports Jewish people with learning disabilities enabling them to lead independent and fulfilling lives, held a challah make for 40 people. Side by Side a primary school in North London also held a challah make for their children with various degrees of special needs, helping children to a task they don’t typically get to do with their peers at school. Penny Toubkin, consultant at
Langdon in Manchester, said: “It [ShabbatUK] brings the community together in a unique and meaningful way, and I can personally say that it was the springboard for me to explore increasing my spiritual commitment. Observing Shabbat with Jews from all around the world is always incredibly inspiring and the concept of ShabbatUK encourages everyone to experience the beauty of Shabbat. It’s pretty hard not to want to grow after being part of something so moving.” A spokesperson from ShabbatUK said: “ShabbatUK is a project for every single member of the Jewish community across the UK and this year we wanted to focus on making it as inclusive as possible. It is imperative that everyone is given the same opportunities to participate in one of the most wonderful of community projects ever to take place in the UK. We hope that that this sets a tone for recognising the importance of holding inclusive events throughout the year.”
Success for first Challah Make for Bushey Bushey hosted the most incredible Shabbat UK Challah Make, with over 220 members and family attending. This was the first challah make Bushey has hosted and it was a fantastic community event. Rebbetzen Jacqueline Feldman was on stage leading and demonstrating just how to mix, knead and plait the challot. They were honoured that Chief Rabbi Efraim Mirvis scheduled Bushey into his extremely busy ‘challah make crawl’ and provided some inspiration as we kneaded our uncooked dough. BBC Radio also popped in to get an idea of what this Shabbat UK ‘Challah Make’
meant to our community. Whilst our dough was proving, there was a cookery demonstration by ‘ The Jewish Princesses’ which led our culinary expertise in a different direction as we swapped bread for fishcakes. Meanwhile the smell of the yeast at work permeated the hall. This truly fantastic event brought the community together, with so many people enjoying the occasion and also making such wonderful Challot for their Shabbat tables. The Shul was transformed, full to the brim with people enjoying the task in hand.

The Great Musical Challah Make, held on Thursday 26th October in the run-up to Shabbat UK, was a huge success, with nearly a thousand people coming together at Allianz Park to partake in the mitzvah of making challah. The event was organised by two formidable organisations - Seed and Chazak - both of whom make a tremendous impact in the community in the field of Jewish education and outreach. The atmosphere was buzzing as Rebbetzen Joanne Dove of Seed took to the stage to help participants prepare the perfect batch of dough, and singer Avi Kraus and band Soul Flame entertained the crowd with live music. Rabbi Yitsy David of Chazak addressed the packed audience with stirring words, “The energy and power in the room tonight is palpable…we come together from two organisations - Seed and Chazak - organisations who believe in the power of individuals, the family

They are intended for use by children under 12, older individuals with learning difficulties and adults with planning difficulties. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis visited Kennedy Leigh on his ShabbatUK tour and was impressed with what he saw. “I’ve been to many Challah Bakes this week, but what’s

happening here is special,” he said. “You can be very proud of the work you’re doing here.” Speaking about what ShabbatUK meant to him, he added: “Shabbat is something that we all feel naturally within us. This week is about spreading the message of Shabbat and raising awareness of this pillar of our faith.” Tanya Rihtman, Therapies Manager (Occupational Therapy), Norwood, organised the event. She called ShabbatUK: “a fabulous opportunity for communities to come together”. “But some children really struggle to participate because of a range of visible or invisible needs,” she continued. “Norwood’s Occupational Therapy team is excited to
be launching a resource that they have developed to support children and young people to participate in the Challah Bake.” Norwood’s Shabbat UK celebrations kicked off on Tuesday 24 October with a Challah Bake led by Rabbi Stanley Coten at Ravenswood Village. Thursday 26 October saw two more events: one held at Norwood’s Kennedy Leigh Family Centre and the other, held jointly with Jewish Care, at the Michael Sobell Jewish Community Day Centre in Golders Green. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis made it to both events on his ShabbatUK whistle-stop tour.

Both speakers focused on the exhibition’s final panel entitled “A People of Hope.” The Centre’s Director for International Relations Dr. Shimon Samuels, presented them with a 1st century Judean lamp, to symbolize the persistence of the Jews’ return from every exile to their land. He also noted next weeks centenary of the Balfour Declaration, which acknowledges the Jewish right to sovereignty in their “National Home.” Dr. Graciela Vaserman-Samuels represented the Director General of UNESCO, the exhibitor’s co-organizer. Her message stressed the exhibition as “an invitation to discover the history of the Jewish people in the Holy Land… which had
shaped the history of all humanity.” Rabbi Marvin Hier, Founder and Dean of the Wiesenthal Centre evoked the Prophets’ transmission of their words to humanity emanating only from Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean and Global Action Director, recounted the exhibitions worldwide itinerary in his vote of thanks. Several Ambassadors offered their cooperation for its future display in their home capitals. Samuels stressed “the freeing of slaves by Moses, the seventh day of rest, the role of the Prophet to temper the power of the monarch, as precursors for the rule of law and the values enunciated by the Council of Europe.”
Schools across London, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow also got involved in the excitement, with students encouraged to participate both in their community events and events planned within school time. The ShabbatUK ice cream van visited countless events around the country, providing free ice cream to more than five thousand people. Older students assisted at Community events over the weekend of ShabbatUK by acting as Madrichim, guides for younger children. The youngest registered volunteer was 3 years old, dedicated to the cause as he put flyers out on every chair for 1000 people in Kinloss United Synagogue. In efforts to cater for the needs of participants with hearing loss, visual impairment and other disabilities, specialist schools, synagogues and community centres held inclusive and neuro-dirverse events to facilitate their participation. These included challah makes with sign interpreted assistance to enable all participants to knead and braid their challot. This year more than any other, large corporate firms got involved with ShabbatUK. Clifford Chance
hosted a special ShabbatUK Lunch and Learn, Deloitte hosted a Jewish Network challah make with 100 professionals from Goldman Sachs, Linklaters, PWC and Bank of America. KPMG hosted an interfaith challah make with 60 people from all the faith networks across KPMG and finally Investec became ShabbatUK’s first ever major corporate supporter this year. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said: “ShabbatUK is no ordinary fixture in the Jewish calendar. It is a phenomenon which inspires so many Jews across the country regardless of affiliation or level of religious observance. I have been so inspired to see how this year, parts of our community who have never previously taken part, have celebrated at events around the country. My sincere hope is that people take the message of ShabbatUK to heart, to become more inspired, proud and committed Jews.”
A Tribe surprise at JFS Last Thursday, Tribe in conjunction with the Informal Jewish Education team at JFS, surprised 600 JFS students with a special Challah Make to mark this year’s ShabbatUK. With a demonstration led by Rebbetzen Freda Kaplan of Hampstead Garden Suburb US and guided by 35 volunteers and 30 JFS staff, the Year 7 and 8 students each made their own Challah, adding to their ShabbatUK involvement and experience. The Challot made were then taken home by pupils in order to enhance their own Shabbat experiences. Musical entertainment by singer Eitan Freilich created a fantastic and energetic atmosphere and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis addressed the students, referencing the magical starry theme of the event. The Chief Rabbi connected God showing Abraham the stars in this week’s Torah portion to the pupils, explaining that they all have the potential to become stars. David Collins, United Synagogue Director of Jewish Living, said: “This surprise Challah Make was both a meaningful and memorable experience for all involved. It provided a positive Jewish experience

for the JFS students, connecting their school lives to both their home and shul lives. We therefore continue to seek to create a future for our communities through engaging, educating and inspiring the next generation. We look forward to working with JFS again on other projects.” Daniel Marcus, Head of Jewish Life and Learning at JFS and Deputy Head of the school, added: “Informal Jewish experiences are a key part of our Jewish Studies provision and this wonderful event and the fantastic work of Tribe has strengthened our Initiatives such as these give a practical outlet for pupils to gain first-hand experiences of the beauty and inspiration that Shabbat provides. Special thanks go to all involved for making this Challah Make so successful.”
The biggest ShabbatUK yet! This year, ShabbatUK took the Jewish community in the UK by storm, with many hundreds of ShabbatUK themed events in the weeks leading up to ShabbatUK and on Shabbat itself. A hundred synagogues and communities across the country held events ranging from Challah (the traditional plaited bread eaten on Shabbat) makes and Havdalah (the blessing at the completion of Shabbat) concerts to communal Friday night dinners. Activities took place both in the week prior to ShabbatUK, on Shabbat itself and on Motzei Shabbat (Saturday Night). The largest events included the Kabbalat ShabbatUK concert in Lee Valley Athletic Centre, which saw 1,500 children from 20 schools across London come together to sing and dance all in the ShabbatUK spirit. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis’ attendance added to the excitement. The final ShabbatUK event was the HavdalahUK concert. Over 1,400 people flocked to Watford Colosseum to enjoy the melodies of the Portnoy Brothers and internationally acclaimed Acapella group, the Maccabeats to mark the end of ShabbatUK.

Special cards for a special cause Cousins Abi & Rachel have designed and printed Mazeltov cards, which they will be selling to raise funds for the Israeli charity Beit Issie Shapiro, in order to celebrate their Bat Mitzvahs. The cards have now come back from the printer and are ready to be sold. There are 5 designs in a pack,
ranging from Mazeltov on your Bar /Batmitzvah to general ‘Let’s celebrate’. They thought it was a real waste when people buy cards from a regular retailer and then the cards often get thrown away - this way the money goes straight to tzedakah to help disabled children in Israel.

Leeds trip to Eastern Europe and Belarus Members of the JEC (Leeds Kollel) have returned from a trip they organised for Leeds teenagers to Eastern Europe and Belarus. The idea of the trip was to get the Leeds teenagers engaged in social action, preparing talks to give over to the children of the Yad Yisroel organisation in Pinsk, and to carry out their visit to Pinsk after visiting some Holocaust sites together with
Benjy Gordon of JRoots. The teens have also raised money for their Belarusian counterparts. The trip began last Wednesday and included a whirlwind tour of Poland, including joining in song with groups from other areas of the world; hearing inspirational stories of the heroes who lost their lives at the locations we were visiting and seeing sites that spoke of atrocities

beyond belief. On Thursday, this continued with one of the most moving moments involving seeing a memorial comprised of a vast wall of the first names of the victims who perished there, on which each member of the group was able to find a variation of their own name. There the message really hit home hard. This wasn’t just 6,000,000 people, it was 6,000,0000 individuals just like us, each with their own aspirations and dreams, that were cut short in the prime of their lives. On Friday morning the group started their long journey to Pinsk, across the Polish, Belarusian border. The Kollel members led discussions on topics the teenagers had no idea came under the realm of Judaism, such as halachic implications of organ trafficking.
In Pinsk, the poverty of the local Jews had a major impact on the teenagers from Leeds. They couldn’t believe that a paper towel could be something that needs affording; that a girl’s cupboard could contain merely a cup and pen and no clothing. They were uplifted by the singing, and excitement for Judaism that they witnessed and spent Shabbat afternoon playing with the teens of Pinsk. Whilst the trip is over, this group of teenagers will continue to meet and spread what they have found. They will be meeting with Holocaust survivor Arek Hersh, who is the grandfather of one of the group. They will also continue to try and help the teenagers of Yad Yisroel Pinsk.
Something truly magical has taken root in the hearts of the Leeds teenagers that we hope will have ripple affects throughout the Leeds Jewish community.

ASK THE RABBI Looking for answers? Send your question to asktherabbi@thejewishweekly.com Is Open Orthodoxy Kosher? Dear Rabbi, Why is there such resistance to “open-orthodoxy?” Are Rabbis so afraid of change? Isn’t it important to be open to all peoples and so long as there is a commitment to Orthodoxy, encouraging more people into that way of life must surely be a positive. What is wrong with it? Tamar Dear Tamar, Everything is wrong with it. “Open” doesn’t just mean open to all people. It also means open to adaptation of the law and still calling it Orthodox. Of course one needs to consider the essential
difference between reform, which implies reforming the law, a total breach from traditional, historical Judaism, and open Orthodoxy which, while remaining committed to the broader tenets of the faith, still finds alleged loopholes by which to compromise the fundamentals. The latter is inherently more dangerous if only because they operate under a deceptive banner using a slogan implying they are authentic when that doesn’t reflect reality. I always work on the basis that one ought to look at the end result. If the end result is no good then it points to the fact that the whole premise is flawed. One case in point that comes immediately to mind is a certain renowned “open orthodox” Rabbi who is closely linked and teaches along other likeminded Rabbis (includ-
ing the advocates for partnership services etc). He decided to spend his Friday night in church looking to build bridges between Jews and Christians. Standing there wearing his talit, in front of a cross and declaring, “Church is exactly where I need to be praying tonight,” is exactly what’s wrong with open orthodoxy. Now watch all the liberals come clamouring crying foul. Courting Corbyn Dear Rabbi, Even after everyone thought Jeremy Corbyn was going to be long gone, he is still in the hot-seat. Isn’t it time we figure out how to work with the man who might be our next Prime Minister rather than engaging in rhetoric and risk

alienating him? Yigal Dear Yigal, Diplomacy is an art; it is the velvet glove that cloaks the fist of power. It’s also good to keep your friends close and your enemies even closer. So you’re right, let’s not throw out the baby with the bathwater. But let’s not lose sight of who we are dealing with either. Israel’s Ambassador, Mark Regev told the Sunday Times, that those who oppose the historic Balfour Declaration, are “extremists” who reject Israel’s right to exist and could be viewed on a par with terrorist groups such as Hamas. Consider that Jeremy Corbyn (he who apparently courted Hamas in the past) has refused to attend an official dinner with the country’s Prime Minister this week to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. Just as he avoided a Labour Friend’s of Israel reception attended by Ambassador Regev during last month’s Labour Party conference in Brighton. Let’s face it, a friend of Israel he is not. And some might say he has a real problem with Jews. And remember, there were Jews who were sycophantic towards certain German or Russian leaders of the past which didn’t bode well. So it’s a balancing act, on the one hand it is imperative to the keep lines of communication open. On the other hand the Jewish community has to be vocal in its opposition to the man’s principles, anti-Israel bias and whatever hangs up he might have about Jews. You can feed the crocodile in order to get eaten last. But eaten you will be. Money or Your Life Dear Rabbi, I’m looking for some spiritual perspective. I am a successful businessman and find myself away a lot on business – practically every other week. This is putting a real strain on my marriage and my five
kids. If I give up my job I won’t be able to provide them with the life they have become accustomed. If I keep pursuing and advancing my business interests, I risk alienating my family. Is there a Jewish view of value on this? Marc Dear Marc, I’m reassured that you have five kids – at least I know you make it home sometimes. Your question is not so much an ethical one, choosing between right and wrong, but more a case of choosing between two rights. Life is filled with so many good options to choose from how do we know which one to select? I admire how you are deeply committed to your family. Too many people have a “take it or leave it” attitude these days. At the same time you clearly have a strong work ethic. Bottom line, whatever you end up choosing, you are going to feel bad about having overlooked something else important. It’s difficult for me to offer you an outright solution but to help your thinking process, what you need to consider here is not so much about choosing what is right, but what is right for you. It’s moments like this that help us define who we are and our true value system. What you’re really going to need to do is have a conversation with your family, gauge their true feelings, make them aware of all that is at stake and take it from there. Your ultimate choice will be your defining moment.

Putting Hearts before Eyes by Rabbi Yoni Birnbaum, Hadley Wood Jewish Community In 2014, at the age of just 10, Grace Warnock, a primary school pupil from East Lothian in Scotland, was diagnosed with the inflammatory bowel condition Crohn’s disease. After a short time, she noticed with increasing dismay that people were reacting negatively to her using wheelchair accessible facilities in public places, not realising that her invisible condition justified the use of these facilities in an emergency. Parshat Vayera How do we explain the incongruous nature of the blessings at a brit milah? At a circumcision the mohel makes the bracha: ‘al hamila’ – ‘concerning the circumcision,’ the father says the bracha: ‘lehachniso b’vrito shel Avraham avinu’- ‘to bring the child into the covenant
Tehillim Psalm 27 This Psalm is one of the most famous across Tehillim, as we recite it each morning after Shacharit from the beginning of Elul, until Shemini Atzeres. ‘LDavid Hashem Oire vyishi, mimi eiroh?- Hashem is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?’ In the world we live in, unfortunately there are many people out to get us. If we open a new business, often our competitors will gang up to try and mercilessly destroy us, whether bad-mouthing behind our backs or causing any form of destruction they can think of. King David suffered just the very same way, from people who used to be close to him. He describes how ‘evildoers would approach me to devour my flesh.’ The harsh business world of today certainly shows us the ‘dog eat dog’ syndrome that literally sees people tearing each other apart. King David was King Saul’s son in law, yet he still tried mercilessly to kill him. Yet it is they who ‘stumble and fall.’ Our Psalm goes on to say, ‘Even if there would encamp against me an army, my heart

Man desires always change. Every moment is filled with fresh possibilities, and people are always looking for new luxury in this world. Yet King David asks of only one thing, ‘’to dwell in the house of Hashem, all the days of my life, and to contemplate his sanctuary.’ We echo this request daily in our Amidah. King David calls Hashem’s shelter ‘His Succah,’ an apt expression that we can all relate to each year on Succot, when we feel his protection against the elements. May we all be protected against the most vicious elements of life.

father says ‘le’? This was the essence of a question which was asked under tragic circumstances. In 1941 the Jews of Kovno were herded into the ninth fort where they were shot. One of those who was about to die realised what was to happen and asked a shayla to his Rabbi, he said ‘just before they kill me I want to say a blessing on being a martyr but should the blessing be ‘lekaddesh hashem’ or ‘al kiddush hashem’? Is it le or al? The Rabbi answered as follows, he said: when you say le it’s for something that others can do for you, for example ‘lishmoa kol shofar’ - ‘on the blowing of the shofar,’ ‘lehadlik ner shel Shabbat’ - ‘kindling the Sabbath lights,’ ‘shel yom tov’ – ‘the Yom Tov lights’; somebody can say the bracha, I say amen and they cover me. However, the Rabbis said: when we say al that’s for a precept I must perform by myself: ‘al sefirat haomer,’ nobody can count the omer for me, ‘al netilat yadayim’ nobody can wash my hands for me. I must do it myself. Therefore, the Rabbi responded, the blessing we will recite is ‘al kiddush hashem’ because it is something that we will have to do ourselves.
There is an alternative way of approaching this question: to explain as follows when we say ‘al’ it is for a precept which we complete: al achilat matza, al achilat maror, al netilat yadayim you wash hands, you eat matza or maror and it’s over. However, ‘le’ is the beginning of a process: ‘leishev besukka’, ‘laasok b’divrei torah’ - to dwell in the sukkah, to study Torah through the day. These are starts of a process. So now, coming to the brit the mohel makes the bracha: ‘al hamila’ because once he has performed the circumcision it will be over, behind them all, the boy and his family. However, ‘lehachniso b’vrito shel Avraham Avinu’ - to guarantee that our children live a life through which they reflect the virtues and the values of the life of Avraham is going to take a lifetime. We’re starting the process of Jewish education which will lead to meaningful Jewish life. Isn’t it incredible how through the slightest change in the version of a blessing, we can gain inspiration for incredible, meaningful and joyous living. and trends in stock markets (particularly in the USA): rising unemployment signals a recession and a fall in stock prices. However, the USA is currently seeing a strong downward trend in unemployment. There is also little evidence of the excessive growth that led to the rate rises that ended the 1980s bull market, the excessive bullishness that triggered the sell-off that put paid to the 1990s dot-com bubble or the excessive financial leverage that sparked the banking crisis in 2008. Growth is steady and there is no sign of the late-cycle surge in wages that leads central banks to raise interest rates meaningfully. Banks have significantly increased their capital buffers to satisfy tighter regulation since the financial crisis and, if anything, markets are tending towards excessive bearishness. Contrary to most people’s expectations, the majority of portfolios increased in value after the UK voted to leave the EU, making 2016 the best year for multi-asset investors since 2009. A 15 per cent drop in the value of sterling boosted the value of overseas investments and the UK equity market, which sources 70 per cent of its earnings overseas. As things stand, Brexit remains a source of a significant two-way risk for the pound. A hard Brexit or a no deal outcome would be negative for the UK economy and the pound could drop again. On the other hand, a soft Brexit could be positive for the economy and for property markets but the resulting sterling strength may limit returns on equities, in a partial reverse of the 2016 dynamic. Investors with a low risk appetite should avoid taking a view on the negotiations and hold most of their assets in sterling. Investors remain sensitive to geopolitical risk and it is likely we will continue to see bouts of risk aversion, with hawkish central bank rhetoric, North Korean
tensions and concerns over Chinese growth the most probable sources of volatility. However, each pause in the current equity rally has been followed swiftly by a new upward trend, as macroeconomic fundamentals (the real drivers of markets) remain supportive. Therefore to summarise, it can be credibly argued that the current economic cycle has some way to go. With inflation low and growth steady, the outlook for equities remains constructive, particularly while central banks opt for incremental tightening. There will be bumps along the way, but with cash losing its value on a daily basis, it still pays to stay invested.

Redbridge and Brady lead way in Premier Division BY DAVID SAFFER
Premier Division pacesetters Redbridge Jewish Care A came from two goals down in a 5-2 win against Maccabi London Lions White. Daniel Garfinkle scored a hattrick for the league leaders, Russell Goldstein and Steven Summers also hit the target. Kiki Levin and Josh Weiner scored early on for Lions to stun Redbridge into action. Garfinkle pulled a goal back with a run and shot before a collarbone injury to James Gold meant it would be a long second half for manager James Gershfield with no substitutes available. Goldstein equalised for Redbridge from a penalty after substitute Steve Summers was needlessly upended in the box. Garfinkle completed his hat trick with powerful strikes before Summers rounded off the scoring with a solo goal. Lions went down to nine men late on. “Lions are undoubtedly a young and talented side who will give every time they play a game but you can’t turn up with 11 then lose a player and stay in the game for 70 minutes,” said manager Jon
Jacobs. “Squads win matches at this level so I am just grateful we had 15 available today who all added something to the game and kept our run going. “I’m very happy with the performance and the goals obviously, but more importantly, the guys played the conditions better in the second half, didn’t panic at half time and knew the game would be ours if we kept cool and played for 90 minutes.” Brady Maccabi are two points adrift of the league leaders after also coming back from two-goal deficit to defeat Maccabi London Lions Blue 3-2 in a thrilling match. Brady battled back after Charlie Cohen and Adam Abadi opened the scoring for the visitors before Reiss Mogilner (2, 1 pen) and Stanley Offord sealed the points. “Today we came back brilliantly to take a great win and reversed what happened to us a couple of weeks ago,” said delighted Brady boss Joel Nathan. “We probably should have been further behind but made them pay for missed chances and once we got the first back just before half time sensed Lions were there for the taking.
Los Blancos and North London Raiders B in cup action
“We started sloppily and were made to pay but should have won more convincingly. In the end we sneaked it by one goal. “It was a tightly contested derby but Richard Jaye refereed it superbly.” “This result is probably the most difficult to swallow of the season, to lose again from being 2-0 up is seriously disappointing,” said Lions boss Samuel Marchant. “We were dominant for 30 minutes, missed a penalty prior to going a goal up then missed a great chance at two-up. We need to be more clinical whatever the scoreline. “Conceding on the stroke of half-time hurt us, heads dropped and it was downhill from there.” Marchant added, “Brady showed desire once they got a goal back but it’s disappointing to lose to a team again that we are better than. “The mentality of the group is something we have been working on this past month. Our squad is extremely young and it sometimes shows. Our technical ability is there, no doubt. Once it clicks we will be a serious force.” Division One leaders Faithfold A enjoyed a fourth victory of the season in a goal frenzy against L’Equipe rattling up a 9-1 triumph. Bottom club L’Equipe opened the scoring before Avi Markiewicz (2), Louis Naghten (2), Ben Shirbini, Zalmy Cohen, Leor Harel, David Leiwy and Gav Lewis scored for the table toppers, who are four points clear of Los Blancos. After L’Equipe struck Faithfold player-boss Markiewicz leveled with a free kick then fired into the bottom corner after Shirbini and Leiwy set up the chance. Shirbini struck number three from outside the penalty box for a two-goal interval lead. Naghten scored the fourth with a

25-yard strike into the top corner. The fifth came from Harel then Leiwy found the far corner of the net, Cohen slotted in a seventh. Lewis, who turned 17 recently, scored prior to Lewis completed the scoring. “It was a comprehensive and dominant win,” said Markiewicz. “Ben Gabay on his debut in goal was hardly troubled and it could have been more if not for good goalkeeping, wastefulness and the woodwork. We worked tirelessly for each other and coupled with a group of talented lads makes for a potent mixture.” Oakwood B continued a good run of form with a 3-0 win at Temple Fortune A. Daniel Seligman, James Abrams and Sam Modlin scored for the visitors. “I’m really pleased to get backto-back league wins,” said manager Jason Stein. “We played well today, were on the front foot, had plenty of possession and created some good chances. “We should have put the game to bed earlier, but the win is all that matters.
“The big disappointment is Dan Ash going off early with a calf injury. He’s worked his way back and him going off impacted our rhythm.” Camden Park finished the game with 10 men but moved off the foot of the table with a shock 2-1 win at North London Raiders A who blew a point by missing a last minute penalty. A Josh Marks spot kick and Johan Jordi scored the Camden goals. “This was a fantastic win,” said manager Stirling Kay. “Once again, we lost players on the morning of the game and numerous players were injured so a reshuffle was needed. “The lads to a man stuck to the game plan with a number playing out of position and to the shock of Raiders we went in 2-0 up at halftime. We lost Josh (Marks) after 50 minutes then Jake Saunders was sent off for a second yellow with 25 minutes left. “Raiders pulled a goal back when we lost concentration, but our back four were superb, Steve Murad had one serious shot to save
07 NOVEMBER 2017 during the whole game. “As a unit we kept them to longrange shots, denied Raiders space and rode our luck when they missed a penalty. The squad got what they deserved, their first three points.” Real Hendon and Bayern Mincha drew 2-2 in Division Two. Mincha wasted a chance to lead the table and needed an Adam Ellis 96th minute equaliser to claim a point. Ellis scored the other Mincha goal. “I can’t say I’m happy with a point as I know this is the worst Bayern will play, but it was a good sign to see my team fighting until the last moment and not losing,” said Bayern joint-manager Alon Pinhas. Joe Metlis and Adam Hersh scored for Hendon. “It was a fantastic performance against an excellent and young Bayern team that beat us 4-1 a few weeks ago,” said Motty Korman. “They are a team we expect to be challenging for the title but we are disappointed not to have taken the points as we had more chances, but weren’t clinical enough. “We felt we should have had a goal in the first half when the ball crossed the line and had a strong penalty claim when Chaim

Zach Cohen was the Mill Hill goalscoring hero with four goals. Nick Phillips and Jamie Nagioff were the other scorers. Cohen broke the deadlock with a header on 16 minutes, Joe Reece then played in Cohen to glide past three defenders before slotting home for a 2-0 half time lead. Phillips headed in after the restart from a long throw in before Cohen tapped in for his hat-trick on 66 minutes. Faithfold got a goal back then Cohen slotted home. Nagioff made it 6-1 with 10 minutes remaining prior to Faithfold grabbing a consolation. “What a performance from the boys, the football was truly scintillating at times, it was superb from back to front throughout,” said Mill Hill boss Brandon Hamme. “There is a great hunger and desire within our squad. Every week, we show up desperate for a win. It’s a very exciting time to manage the side but we can’t get ahead of ourselves though things are looking very positive.”
Los Blancos and Raiders enjoyed a classic cup tie
North London Raiders C shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw against FC Team, who scored through Mitch Young, Richard Salmon and Jon Breger. Straw Hat Pirates match with Boca Jewniors was postponed after Boca announced they are withdrawing from the league. Elsewhere, Division One title challengers Los Blancos overcame North London Raiders B in a scrappy encounter 3-2 in the Cyril Anekstein Cup. Raiders battled away with 11 fit players available and ended the game with nine for the last 10 minutes due to injuries. Svi Freeman opened the scoring for Blancos with a low 20-yard strike on eight minutes but Raiders leveled shortly after when Charles Braunstein headed home a Mark Leader flick on long from a Rob Blackman a throw in. Oli Sade headed Blancos in front on 77 minutes before winger Daniel Sinclair settled the tie with a left footed shot following a counter attack five minutes from time. Brandon Sassoon curled in a 25yard free kick for Raiders deep into injury time. “Blancos again came and conquered keeping their 100 percent record intact,” said Joel Holder. “In this free flowing Blancos side, goals came from everywhere.” “Two good sides cancelled each other out for long spells but Blancos were able to call on fresh legs in the second half and playing with the wind were able to find an edge,” said Doron Salomon, Raiders co-manager. “We wish Blancos all the best in the cup.” Oakwood A won 4-0 at Redbridge Jewish Care B but this was far from a comfortable passage for

the Premier League champions as all the goals came late on. Redbridge went close on a couple of occasions before Oakwood striker Brad Wine broke the deadlock 13 minutes from time. Dave Woolman, Kyle Bentwood and Jonathan Quinn completed the scoring. “This is a scoreline which flatters us and doesn’t tell the story,” said Oakwood boss Daniel Kristall. “Redbridge frustrated us for the majority of the match but fitness and our extra quality pulled us through. “We could have been a goal down in the first half but that was their only real moment in the game. We were sloppy at times with our passing but must give credit to our hosts. “As the game wore on, we began to take control and in the end we had too much.” Kristall added, “Ultimately, we know how difficult these games can be. “Redbridge were up for it and it doesn’t matter how you win games of football, as long as you pull through in the end. I don’t feel we have hit our heights yet this season.”
“Today we knew the machine we were facing in Oakwood A,” said Redbridge player-manager Josh Hambling. “Our game plan was simple, stay disciplined and keep touches to a minimum. We matched the best team in Jewish football for 80 minutes but ultimately class shone through. “I’m proud of my team today, we showed great attitude and team spirit. Best of luck to Oakwood, it will take a very good team to beat them.” In Masters football, North London Raiders continue to lead the way in Division One with a fifth successive win. James Kaye (2) and Wayne Davidson scored the goals in a 3-1 at HMH. Raiders are now six point clear of Chigwell Athletic. EHRS Stonegrove made it six straight wins in Division Two following a comfortable 3-0 win against Temple Fortune. Dean Schulberg, James Bloom and Ashley Davidson, with a penalty, claimed the points and a sixpoint lead over St John’s Wood Tigers.

Football’s coming home! Ahhh. Haven’t said those words in a while! But in the past few weeks England’s youth teams, ranging all the way from under 17 to the more established under 21’s, have delivered the goods and are finally bringing glimpses of progression towards winning the 2022 World Cup, just like the FA said they would.
When the then Football Association chairman Greg Dyke made that statement four years ago, many, including myself, laughed at the suggestion. Yet, thanks to the performances of England’s youngsters, we may be witnessing the long awaited “golden years” of English football in this generation. In the Premier League
this week, it was quite a straightforward routine with Chelsea, City, Liverpool and Arsenal all winning relatively comfortably and United snatching a late winner at Old Trafford against Spurs in a surprisingly very quiet game. So I’d like to turn the attention to the big question that is pondering around the world of football right now. Will the English Senior Men’s team emulate the success of the juniors? I’ve been interested in the national under 21’s team for some time now because, in my opinion, it’s like the England B team, and it’s up to our coaches and managers in the Premier League for them to get more game time and start

performing week in, week out in the Premier League. But, for many of these players, they just get sent on loan to Championship clubs and maybe here and there get a look in to the senior side but it never really prevails and even if they get a chance they’re not trusted enough by the gaffer due to their inexperience and lack of game time in the Premier League. If you look at the stats, England Under-21 players had played 49% of the total top-flight minutes of their Spanish opponents, 58% of the Germans and 67% of the Italians. For me, that’s got to change. And taking a look at the stars of the recent England Under 17 team, you’ll notice that only Fulham’s
Steven Sessegnon, who was a £25 million target for Spurs in the summer, is the only player to actually play more than 2 full games for his club and that’s not even mentioning the fact that Jadon Sancho is the only player to appear in a topflight match with six Bundesliga minutes for Dortmund. Having spent about £120m to build, England elite teams are based at St George’s Park in Burton. It is five years old and is overseen by the FA’s technical director Dan Ashworth. With all these amazing facilities though, it’s up to the junior and senior players to produce the goods at the next World Cup in the summer and the one in Qatar in four years’ time.

Parshat Vayera Avraham, now 99 years old, just had brit milah (circumcision). The third day after the brit milah is the most painful, and to help him a bit, Hashem makes the day extra hot so that no guests would come to Avraham. But Avraham wants guests so he goes out to look for guests, and there, in the distance, he sees three men walking, and they want to come to his house! These men were actually angels dressed up as men, coming to bring Avraham a message. Avraham prepares them a delicious meal.

The angels bring three messages: 1. Sarah would finally have a baby! 2. Avraham will recover from the brit milah. 3. The city of Sodom (where Lot, Avraham’s nephew, lives) will be destroyed. Avraham tries to convince Hashem not to destroy Sodom, but it doesn’t help. Avraham goes to save Lot. When they walk away from Sodom, no one is allowed to look back. Lot’s wife can’t resist, turns around and turns into a pillar of salt… In the meantime, Yitzchak is born and grows up. Hashem tests Avraham’s love and asks him to sacrifice Yitzchak! Avraham goes to the Mountain of Moriah and puts Yitzchak on the altar. Seconds before he would sacrifice Yitzchak, Hashem tells him to stop and sacrifice a ram instead. Avraham has proven that he loves Hashem and will do anything for him.
Arts and Crafts Coloured Salt jars
As you know, lot’s wife turned into a pillar of salt. Therefore this week’s craft: a jar of salt!
You will need • Salt • Jar(s) • Chalk in different colours • Paper
Method
1. Pour about a tablespoon of salt onto the paper. Choose a colour and rub the salt with the side of the chalk. Rub until the salt is coloured the way you like it. 2. Using the paper as a funnel, carefully poor the salt into the jar. 3. Repeat this process and try to vary with colours, so every layer has a different colour. 4. Continue until your jar is full. 5. As an extra, you could pour liquid glue over the top, so that the salt cannot come out, but if your jar has a lid, there is no need.

Parshat Vayera In a Nutshell This week’s parshah is Vayera. By the beginning of the parshah, Avraham is recovering from his brit milah (circumcision). The third day of the recovery is most painful and thus, in order to make it easier for him, Hashem sends extremely hot weather, to keep guests away from coming. However, Avraham is unstoppable, he wants guests so much that he goes out to find them. He meets three men, who were
really angels. The Talmud tells us that this was Raphael, Michael and Gavriel. They have come to bring him a few messages. 1. Sarah is going to have a baby! 2. The city of Sodom, where Avraham’s nephew Lot lives, is going to be destroyed. 3. Avraham will recover from his brit milah. Avraham hears about Sodom and even though he begs Hashem
to save Sodom, Hashem doesn’t budge. Avraham then goes out to save Lot. On their way out of Sodom, as the city is being destroyed, they are not allowed to look backwards. Lot’s wife cannot resist… She turns around and turns into a pillar of salt. After that, we read in the parshah how Yitzchak is growing up. And then comes the hardest bit of Avraham’s life. Hashem had sent Avraham
9 tests before, but this one, the 10th is the hardest one. To test Avraham’s love for G-d, Avraham is asked to sacrifice that which is most dear to him: his son Yitzchak. Avraham doesn’t hesitate, he knows what he has to do. He saddles his donkey and leaves early in the morning, Yitzchak and Yishmael on his side. When they reach the mountain, only him and Yitzchak
continue. They get to the altar, Avraham gets ready and seconds before he is going to sacrifice his son Yitzchak, a voice from heaven comes and tells him to stop. He has proven himself. His will to do the hardest thing ever, to prove his love for Hashem. An angel then tells him to sacrifice a ram instead. Avraham has passed the test.
5 ways to become more environmentally-friendly 5
1
DONATE
TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT What you eat and thus what you buy, also has an impact on the environment. The meat industry produces a lot of carbon dioxide. Now, you shouldn’t refrain from eating meat because of this, but opting for a meat-free meal once or twice a week does add up. Besides for that, try to opt for produce that originates from local places, rather than far away locations. This way, the produce is not imported. That means that it has been transported less and that means less carbon dioxide!
3
THINK OF THE WASTE
How much you throw away and what you throw away has a big impact on the environment. Try to reduce your use of disposable cutlery and recycle your waste.
There are many organisations that fight for a better environment. If you would like to support them, you could donate some of your savings and thereby contribute to a healthier world.
4
TRANSPORTATION
Using a car is very harmful to the environment. Why not take the bike or walk somewhere? For each mile you don’t drive, you save the world 1 pound of carbon dioxide emission!

News Bites AUSTRALIA TO BAN CLIMBING ON ULURU FROM 2019 ESCAPED LYNX MADE ‘GIANT LEAP’ OVER ELECTRIFIED FENCE
An escaped lynx is believed to have made a “giant leap” over an electrified fence to get out of the zoo and is now thought to be hiding in nearby bushes. The Eurasian lynx, about twice the size of a domestic cat, escaped from Borth Wild Animal Kingdom, near Aberystwyth, some time
during the past week. The zoo has been closed while members of staff try to find it. Dozens of bait traps are being set up and keepers have tranquilizer darts to hand as a last resort. Dyfed-Powys Police said the lynx could become aggressive if it was cornered and urged the public to be vigilant.
SINGAPORE PYTHON TRIES TO EAT ‘PETRIFIED’ PET PARROT
A pet parrot in Singapore has been rescued from the jaws of death, after its owners discovered a huge python coiled around their bird’s cage. The 1.5m long (5ft) snake was found on Monday in Melvin Yap’s home. Mr Yap extricated the python with a stick, and passed it to an animal rescue group. He told the BBC that their pet bird, named Nikki, survived unharmed, but was “petrified”. Mr Yap said he was still sleeping early on Monday morning when he was woken up by frantic screams in the house.
“There was mayhem and panic.” Mr Yap rushed downstairs along with his 10-year-old daughter, who assisted him as he “coaxed” the snake into a large plastic bag with a stick. They later put it into an unused fish tank “so it wouldn’t suffocate”, and called a local animal rescue group which took it away later that afternoon.
Climbing on Australia’s iconic Uluru landmark will be banned from October 2019, local authorities have confirmed. The board of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park voted unanimously to end the climb because of indigenous sensitivities. The giant red monolith in the Northern Territory is a sacred site for Aboriginal Australians.
Local people have long asked visitors not to climb the outcrop,
which was known for many years as Ayers Rock.
US SAILORS RESCUED AFTER MANY MONTHS ADRIFT IN PACIFIC Two US yachtswomen and their two dogs have been rescued by the US Navy after spending nearly five months adrift in the Pacific Ocean, officials say. Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiaba say they set off in a small sailing boat from Hawaii bound for Tahiti when their engine, damaged by bad weather, failed. Their boat then drifted in the open seas about 1,500km (930 miles) southeast of Japan, they said. They were rescued after a fishing vessel alerted US authorities. The pair said they set off in May and their engine broke at the end of that month.
They originally thought they would be able to reach land by relying on wind and sails, the US Navy’s Seventh fleet said in a statement. “Two months into their journey and long past when they originally estimated they would reach Tahiti, they began to issue distress calls,” the statement added. The US Navy said the two women continued with the calls daily, but that their signals were not picked up because they “were not close enough to other vessels or shore stations”. Ms Appel said they issued distress signals daily for nearly 100 days but received no response.
“It was very depressing and very hopeless, but it’s the only thing you can do, so you do what you can do,” she said. But on 24 October, a Taiwanese fishing vessel spotted their 50ft (15m) boat called the Sea Nymph bobbing in the ocean and contacted authorities on the US territory of Guam. They said they managed to survive the ordeal thanks to a water purifier and more than a year’s worth of dry goods such as oatmeal and pasta. On a conference call with reporters while onboard the Navy ship, they described feeling like “sharkbait” and wondering if each day would be their last.

Now that the winter is approaching, things are really changing. The weather is getting colder and by the time I get home from school it’s dark already. I am a big sports fan, so these changes mean that I can’t do the sports I usually do. Normally, I would go out to play basketball with my friends after school, now we often can’t do that because of the cold, rain or darkness. Do you have any ideas of how we could go about this and fill our winter-evenings?
you like sports, this doesn’t mean that you can’t play sports in the evening, you just have to find the right ones. Did you ever consider sports like table football or table tennis? Also sports like darts, volleyball and swimming are mostly practiced indoors and thus very good for the dark winter evenings. Another option I would suggest is teaming up with a couple of friends and going to an indoor hall to play your beloved sport basketball. This could be in a community centre or local gym.
Regards,
I hope you find the right solution for you and that you keep the fitness up!

Be Careful What You Wish For
PART 1 HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
BY CHAYA SANDLER Some are born great, some become great and some have greatness thrust upon them and try not to drop it. Then there are those who chase greatness whilst it ducks behind a lamppost muttering “When is that guy going to give up already?! Loser.” That’s me by the way. And this is the story of how I gave greatness a run for its money, caught it, danced with it and walked away. I always knew I was going to be special, problem is the world didn’t know that. And so I embarked upon an epic quest to show fate who I was. I took up football, basketball, swimming, art, learnt to play the violin and the harp, went to singing lessons, I even took to collect stuffed owls. But fate wasn’t interested. It turns out I’m what is known as a wimp so the football and basketball careers were out. Despite my considerable talent, no one was willing to overlook a couple of small deficiencies. Which was totally unfair just btw, it really does hurt if you have to kick the ball too hard and arm strain is a very acceptable reason not to want to shoot and it had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that i couldn’t score! My art teacher was too old fashioned, modern art is very big these days, no one could tell what Picasso was painting either! As for the violin and the harp, the less said the better. Suffice to say Mozart I am not and after having to pay for my instructors therapy, my parents decided that was the end of my after school hobby allowance. That’s when I took up collecting stuffed owls but the Guinness World Records weren’t interested, apparently 3 is too small a number for them to come verify and they refused to consider including the
worlds smallest collection as a category.... It seemed I was doomed to inconspicuousness. But then came a golden opportunity! My teacher asked me to run the school newsletter. This was my chance to shine. I could just see it, the youngest journalist in the world, a rising star who transformed his tiny school newsletter into a world renowned broadsheet, feared by all those with something to hide, champions of the weak and oppressed. A David against the Goliath of organised business, exploitation, gangs, the mafia and international crime rings. Scotland Yard would be calling me for tips if I played my cards right! This was it, my greatness had been thrust against me and I must not drop it! I would not fade into obscurity! The first order of business was to check out the staff and the premises. I strode into the office with the casual confident air of a media mogul in the making. On the way I tripped over a mop and splashed headfirst into a bucket of chalk. Coughing and spluttering, I struggled to regain my dignity and respect in he eyes of my underlings but when I looked up, a skinny, lanky dark haired teen was playing computer games on the sole console. I coughed meaningfully but my lackey simply jerked his head to the left, “sinks over there mate.” It appeared we were working in a cupboard room which had a desk and a small uncomfortable plastic chair, currently occupied by the lanky teen, and a really ancient
computer, a really really old box that had windows on it and really, really slow internet. Oh and my one member of staff didn’t seem very interested. So, no swivel chair, no printing press, no staff. Hmm, at least when i write my bestselling autobiography the story will be sensationalised by the humble beginnings. At least it will lower the budget when they make the film. “OK!” I was all pumped for my inspirational pep talk, “Lanky teen, what’s your name?” “Elliot and before you ask, I only do this to skive and I usually just print a load of rubbish off the internet, staple it and give it to the secretary. !” Oh. A challenge but nothing I can’t handle. I eat adversity for breakfast, no seriously I do, it’s the name of a cereal. First things first, I need a strategy. “Elliot, I’m giving you a list of things to handle, can you do graphics?” “I can download a template.” “Ugh, it’ll have to do for now. Do that and here’s a list of stuff I want you to research and compile for filler pages.” “Whoa, hold your horses mate, I ain’t doin’ any o’ that.” He still had yet to raise his eyes from the screen. I sighed, “It means I want you surf the net during school hours.” “Why didn’t you say that the first time? No problem mate.” Now I just had to find a story to investigate. The first week, my head proofread and when the newsletters were all printed, I noticed
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
he had pulled my piece about how the school dinners were scandalously unhealthy, full of cholesterol and possibly posing a risk of death with all the germs that can lurk in corporate kitchens. I have no idea why. There were other mistakes, for example, when I told Elliot to do a feature on popular culture and how it has evolved in the last decade concerning the teenage demographic, he somehow heard cute kitten pictures. Although people did like them. I obviously wasn’t clear enough when I explained that for news of the week he should type out whatever came up under Google’s top news stories this week. We ended up with an article on David Beckham’s new hairstyle and Kate wearing a coat she wore last year. And Scotland Yard hung up on me when I called and threatened to charge me with wasting police time! So there went the news section. As for my grand idea of having fellow students contribute, instead of finding a budding Dickens or J K Rowling, I realised I should’ve proofread Ellie’s poem first. The school have now contacted her parents and sent her for counselling for suicidal tendencies. Mrs Craggs, who thrust this greatness upon me in the first place, was not very impressed. She gave me one more edition to prove myself. But how am I supposed to produce a piece of journalism under these circumstances?! Nothing ever happens around here. There is nothing to report on! Am I doomed to obscurity?! So I thought, but then everything changed and my dreams came true overnight. THE END

Naomi Harris has always wanted to be a primary school teacher and, after graduating from Middlesex University, she began working at Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School. Naomi really enjoys working with the children in the school, and seeing the children grow and develop within her class. “I love to see how they progress over the course of the school year, and really begin to flourish and thrive as young people. Seeing the children’s happy, smiling faces every morning and watching them achieve throughout the day is extremely rewarding.” Since joining the WIJPS community, she has added to the educational experiences that the children have, and has started an after school ‘Creative Club’ for Years 3 – 6. The club runs once a week and focuses on arts, crafts,

drama and dance. She hopes to give the children the chance to explore their creative side, and express themselves through it. As well as working in the school, Naomi has been very involved in voluntary youth work for many years. She took the Children’s Service at Clayhall United Synagogue (which merged in January 2015 with Newbury Park United Synagogue to become the new Redbridge United Synagogue) and volunteered as their Tribe Youth Director. Tribe is the youth arm of the United Synagogue which aims to inspire and enrich the lives of young Jewish people. Activities organised by Naomi included water sports days, bowling, movie nights, succah crawls, picnics, days out and more. Naomi has also been involved in organising Shabbatonim with Tribe for primary schools, including WIJPS. She has volunteered as a madricha on Tribe camps in the UK and Belgium and has been involved in the organisation of the programmes. She also led Tribe Israel Tour for Year 11 students in Summer 2014. During her time at university, Naomi was part of the ‘Big Brother and Sister’ programme run by Camp Simcha, a charity which improves the quality of life for families affected by serious childhood illness. In the Summer of 2015, Naomi volunteered as a madricha on ‘A Taste of Israel’ (ATOI) run by

JFS for their Year 9 students. This trip offers students the opportunity to experience some of the history and culture of the country. Naomi is delighted to have recently become involved with Aish, which offers inspiring and relevant Jewish education and experiences for young Jews in the UK. Rabbi Mendy Brukirer, the Aish Essex Rabbi, and his family moved to Essex two years ago and are an integral part of the community. Aish Essex have recently started working with GIFT, and Naomi has been involved in delivering food packages to needy families in the local area, including challot baked at the Aish Essex Shabbat UK Challah Bake. Throughout London, GIFT currently helps around 2000 people each week. She is hoping that, together with the Brukirer family, more social action projects will be organised, including Mitzvah Day. She has also volunteered on Aish’s educational programmes, which encourage young Jewish people who may not be particularly affiliated to Judaism to become more involved, and she spent last summer in South Africa as part of the leadership team with a group of 28 Year 12 students. “It was the most fabulous experience to not only see South Africa which is a truly amazing place, but to also make some really strong friendships and connections with those in the group. Half of the students

on the programme were from Essex, which has meant that we have had many occasions to get together since we have been back. I look forward to continuing to support Rabbi Mendy and his wife, Gitel, in all the fantastic work that they are doing for young people in our community.” Rabbi Mendy told The Jewish Weekly how essential Naomi’s involvement has been as part of the programmes run at Aish Essex, “As a Madricha for Aish Essex she takes an active part in ensuring the success of our Friday Night Dinners and events. She took two weeks out of her summer holidays to spend it with us teaching and mentoring on our South Africa Fellowships. Naomi’s help with GIFT Essex events whether through delivering parcels or helping at our Social Action Hub days is an inspiration to many. This is well deserved recognition and we know this is just the beginning.” Naomi has grown up in Essex and from a very young age understood the importance of community work. Her parents, grandparents and great grandparents have all been actively involved in volunteering. “I clearly recall standing on a stool in the shul kitchen at just 3 years old counting the fish balls for my Grandma who used to prepare the kiddushim.” Having been a pupil at both Ilford Jewish Primary School and Hasmonean High School,
Naomi was taught the importance of helping others. Being a part of the Essex community has not only shaped Naomi as a person but has influenced her to ensure that the young people of Essex have a positive Jewish experience. She is excited that the area now has many more activities and organisations for young people to be become involved in. “Being part of the Essex Jewish community has always been important to me, and I really want to give back some of the positive experiences I have had by helping others connect in the same way”. She is keen to make people aware of the thriving and vibrant Essex Jewish community. “In the past, many people have considered Essex to be a dying community. However, over the past few years, the community has begun to grow and develop and there are many exciting things happening in the area. Many of the local shuls held activities for Shabbat UK, and WIJPS is looking forward to hosting the Essex KLBD Roadshow on behalf of the community. When I was growing up there was not much on offer, so it is encouraging to see that there are some really fantastic things happening. I am keen to be involved as much as possible and would encourage other young people to get involved in order to ensure Jewish continuity in Essex.”

SAMANTHA STRONG - STRONG WILLS For many the idea of writing a will can be a daunting task, and often something that they don’t really want to think about, but Samantha Strong of Strong Wills believes that it does not have to be a negative experience. “A will is really just an insurance policy, much like contents insurance or life insurance. You hope that you won’t ever have to use it, but by doing it, you know that it’s there if you do.” Samantha has been running her own will writing business, for the past two years. Having originally worked as a charity fundraiser, she decided to make the change to law in 2009. After studying for a law degree on a part time basis, whilst still working, she then went on to do an LPC. It was during this time that she got married to Leigh, and they were both keen to start a family. When Samantha fell pregnant with her first child, Mia, now 4, she realised that it would be difficult to balance being a mother and doing a training contract at the same time. “I thought I would have to put my law career on hold, but when I started speaking to other friends within the industry, they encouraged me to look at will writing as I could do this with the qualifications I had without going through a full traineeship.” Samantha had enjoyed this area of law during her studies, and felt that it would be a way to be able to work for herself, and to also help people, which was an important factor to her. “I wanted to practice law so that I could help people, and guide and advise them, rather than work for a large corporate or high street company, so will writing seemed like a great way to do this.” She started her specialised will writing training and exams when her daughter was still young, and
then set up her company ‘Strong Wills (Legal)’ at the end of 2015. Samantha understands that some people often put off creating a will, just because they do not want to think about their own demise, but she aims to make the experience as positive as possible. “Sometimes people can feel quite depressed at the thought of putting together their will, but I work with them and explain everything as I go, and often by the end they are actually happy and pleased that they have done it as it is a weight off of their mind.” She feels that her approach to clients is different to that of high street firms, or larger companies. Originally from Edgware, she now lives in Loughton, but is completely mobile and is able to visit people in their own homes, mainly in the evenings, to give one-to-one consultations. Before the meeting, Samantha sends a questionnaire to gain a better understanding of what might be the best will for each client. “Often people have never really had conversations with their family about their death, and what they want to happen after they die in terms of property, money or even children. The questionnaire I send out encourages these discussions to be had before we meet, to avoid any confusion or awkwardness around these sensitive issues.” During the meeting, Samantha talks through options and gives
advice and information to help people understand the process. She is always happy to answer any questions or concerns people may have. “Writing a will is something that no one really learns about, but it is something that is very important, so by going through it in detail, I hope that I am able to give people the best advice possible, so that they are clear on what they are doing.” Within two weeks of the initial meeting, Samantha will send a draft document for the client to review and make changes. Once they happy with the final details, Samantha then meets them to supervise signature of the will, and can also organise storage of document if required. Prices for her service start at around £150 for a basic will for a single person, with no minors or trusts, but can vary depending on how complex the situation is. Although it is now possible to apply for a will online, Samantha believes this can sometimes cause more problems and cost later down the line. “When you apply online, it does not enable discussion of different scenarios or situations you might not have thought of, so I would always recommend speaking to an expert to go through all the options.” For those who already have a will, Samantha suggests reviewing it every five years to ensure the information is correct and still rele-
vant. “Whilst your situation may not have changed, others that may be named as your children’s guardians or executors to your will might have, and it is best to reflect this in your will.” She would also recommend that it may sometimes be a good idea to nominate more than one executor that you trust to oversee dealing with your estate. “When someone dies, especially a partner, it can often be a very stressful and emotional experience to sort out elements of their estate, so having more than one person able to carry out your wishes can really help to give them the support they need at such a painful time.” Many of Samantha’s clients start thinking about writing a will usually after having children, and she deals a lot with couples with young families. Having recently had her second child, she understands their situation and can offer practical advice. “When I had my first child, I began to think differently about wills, and we started to think about it properly for the first time. I realised that it was no longer just about myself and my husband, but about what would happen to our daughter, if anything happened to us. One thing that I found out that really shocked us was that if we were to both die, then without a will, social services could be responsible for making a decision about my daughter’s care. Even if we’d discussed that grandparents or other family members would intervene, without a will stating named guardians, there is nothing to stop social services overruling this.” Samantha really enjoys running her own business as it allows her to work around her children and her home life, and gives her the
flexibility to set her own hours. “I am my own boss, which I love, and can develop my career whilst still being there for my children.” She recognises that having your own business may not for everyone, but Samantha would definitely encourage anyone thinking about it to give it a go. “For anyone considering starting their own business, I would recommend just going for it. I have always wanted to be my own boss, so this is a dream come true for me. It can be tricky at times as it is difficult to switch off, and you feel like you are always ‘on duty’, but the positives outweigh the negatives, and it is definitely one of the best things I have ever done.” Strong Wills would like to offer readers of The Jewish Weekly, a 10% discount on the price of a simple Will for a single person or two mirror wills for a couple. Please mention The Jewish Weekly when making initial booking. This offer is valid until the end of January 2018. Please email samantha@strongwills. co.uk or on the Strong Wills Legal Facebook page.

clothes to remove any fluff. • Re-use an old jumper - If your legs are feeling chilly, why not make some leg warmers by cutting off the sleeves of an old jumper to give it a new lease of life. • Lovely leather - If you notice a scratch on your leather jacket, try a dab of moisturiser to rid of the marks. BY MICAELA BLITZ The rest of the evening with Daniel went very well, but I found myself somewhat distracted and was keen to get home to try and help Maya find her son. I tried to find his name on Facebook, but had no luck. This is going to be a little tougher than I thought, I say to myself, but I like a challenge. The next morning, my phone rings as I am walking to work. “Hey stranger”. For once this was someone I actually know - my best friend, Hannah. I haven’t seen her for ages. Having just started a new job has meant that I have hardly had time to speak to anyone, apart from mysterious women looking for their sons! “I know what you are going to say, and I am sorry! I really am!” “Well I didn’t like to say anything, but you have been off the radar for a while. I miss you”. “Work has been crazy, and just getting my head round everything. I am hoping to be able to be a bit more sociable again soon” “Well what are you up to on Shabbat? Remember my friend, Gemma, her and her husband moved just round the corner to you a while ago, and she invited me over for dinner, and said you should come along too. Wanna come and be sociable?” “Yeah, ok that would be lovely. So what’s new with you anyway?” Hannah tells me that she is having major issues at work, and seriously thinking of leaving. It is such a shame to hear that as she is such a great teacher. Ever since the new

THE JEWISH WEEKLY
Cross Lines headteacher started in September she said she felt like the school doesn’t appreciate her or the other teachers. “It’s a really horrible atmosphere amongst the staff, which was never how it was before” she says. I feel bad for her as she used to love working at the school, and always tells me how cute all the kids are. I tell her about Maya’s phone calls. She thinks it all sounds very intriguing, but she always did like mystery stories! My week at work goes pretty quickly, and by Friday I feel like I am finally getting more of an idea about how the office works. I am also getting to know some of the people at work which makes it all a bit better, and I am starting to feel less like the new girl! When we arrive for lunch at Gemma’s on Shabbat, she tells us her husband, Rafi is still on his way back from shul. She says she is running a bit late as Anna, her baby, has not had her morning nap. We offer to help Gemma, whilst Anna plays on the floor with some toys. “She is such a cutie. I just want to squidge her.” I say to Gemma. “Trust me, she looks cute now, but has been crying her head off for the last hour!!” By the time Rafi arrives, the table looks great. The starters are all laid out, and the food smells coming from the kitchen are amazing. Rafi comes into the living room with another couple, and comes into the house wishing us all a
‘good shabbos’. “This is Adam and his wife Dana. This is Hannah and Sara, and of course my lovely wife, Gemma who has prepared what smells like an absolute feast.” He bends down to his little girl who is gurgling on the floor. “And this is my beautiful Anna-Banana”. She giggles as he holds her up high in the air and makes funny faces at her. We all say hello to each other, and make our way to the table so that Rafi can begin kiddish. Just as he is about to start there is a knock at the door. “Hi Jonny, come in, come in.” “I am so sorry, I’m late. I got a bit lost and forgot which number house you lived”. “No worries, no worries. You’re here now, and just in time”. Jonny walks in. He looks a little bit hot and bothered probably from walking around the streets of Edgware, and says hello to everyone. Once kiddish is done, we all sit down at the table to have the starter. Having seen how much is yet to come, I know I have to pace myself!! We help clear the plates after the first course, and take them into. Gemma is taking chicken from the hotplate and puts it in a dish. “Wow, how do you manage to make all of this. It looks amazing.” I say as I pick up the dish and take it to the table. She has made cholent, chicken, rice, potatoes, vegetables and meat loaf! The others are chatting, but I don’t really hear the conversation as I walk back and forth to the
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
kitchen with the endless amazing dishes. When we finally sit down the chatter is in full flow, the dishes are passed around, and people fill their plates. “Girls, Adam was just telling us about his new business. Sounds quite exciting”. “Just waiting to finalise the office space, and launch the website, and then it will all be done” “Well, if you need any help with setting up the website, let me know.” Jonny says “Oh is that what you do then, web design?” Adam replies. “Yes, kind of. I’ve just got a new job at a company in East London, and this is the area I am hoping to move into. I’ve done websites for friends and family, so would be happy to help”. “Thanks, I may well take you up on the offer”. “Sara has just started a new job too” Hannah pipes up. “Oh really, what are you doing?” Gemma asks. “Well I’ve just started working for a publishing company. We do mainly children’s books. I will have to get you some for Anna, if you want Gemma”. “That would be lovely, thanks. She is more at the stage of chewing books rather than looking at them, but maybe she will start looking at the pictures soon!” Gemma replies as she takes Anna out of the high chair and sits her on her lap. Everyone at the table laughs, and Anna giggles too which makes us
PART 3 OF 3 all laugh more! We chat about all sorts of things, and before long we get onto a conversation about people we know in common. It turns out that Adam and his wife are originally from Glasgow, but have lived in London for a few years. Hannah explains that she has an uncle who lives in that area. “Wow, Mr Cohen is your uncle? He was my teacher at school. What a coincidence” he says. I start to tell everyone about my recent random calls from Maya. How she has been trying to get in touch with her son in London, but can’t seem to get through to him on his mobile. I say how she has been desperate to get in touch especially as his dad, Jerry, had been in hospital recently, and she really wanted him to know. “Wow, that’s quite a story. Do you know his name?” Before I can finish the sentence, I hear “His name is Jonathan Brownstein.” I see that he has tears in his eyes. “It’s me. I am the mysterious son”. Everyone at the table turns to look at him “My mum and I had a bit of a row before I left and I hadn’t heard from her so just thought she was giving us both time to cool off. If I had known that all of this was happening, I would have got in touch with her sooner. Thanks so much for helping her, and for letting me know”. “I guess, it really is a small world sometimes!” I say.

Taking Care of your Heart
BY ALAN FREISHTAT
There is one thing that hasn’t changed since I was born, heart disease is still the number one killer in the Western World. Here’s the latest available statistics, and unfortunately, there hasn’t been much of a change in the last several years. • An estimated 17.3 million people die from heart disease globally. • 30% of all deaths are due to heart disease. • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in men. •In the UK every 7 minutes someone has a heart attack. People who exercise and exercise professionals like myself sometimes get so carried away with building muscle, that it is easy to forget that if the muscle in the middle of your chest, your heart, isn’t working right, not much else is going to matter much. Your heart is a fist size muscle located in your chest. Depending upon your level of fitness, it beats about 90,000 to 100,000 times each day or perhaps even more. Within one’s lifetime, it will beat nearly three billion times and pump 42 million gallons of blood. Unfortunately, many hearts cannot function properly because of various diseases, most of which are caused by poor lifestyle habits-lack of proper diet, being sedentary, and high stress levels. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (USA), if all forms of CVD were eliminated, total life expectancy would rise by nearly 10 years. There are many forms of heart disease, some more common and some very rare. The number one thing we are all trying to avoid is having a classic heart attack. What exactly is the dreaded “heart attack”? The medical term for a heart attack is a Myocardial Infarction. The heart requires its own constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, like any muscle in the body. Two large, branching coronary arteries deliver oxygenated blood to the heart muscle. If one of these arteries or branches becomes blocked suddenly, a portion of the heart is starved of oxygen. This is a condition called “cardiac ischemia.” If cardiac ischemia lasts too long, the starved heart tissue dies. This is your classic heart attack and what
is actually happening is the death of part of your heart muscle. Prevention There is no question that our lifestyle and behaviors directly have
either a positive or negative effect on how well our heart functions. People who eat poor quality foods and/or over eat are at a higher risk as are sedentary and overweight people. Stress is a negative factor for keeping your heart healthy. On the other hand, people who are active and exercise, eat a healthy diet and keep their stress in check have much higher odds of good heart health. But there is no question— the best line of defense against heart disease is exercise. What is it that exercise does to keep our heart ticking and efficiently? What Exercise Does EXERCISE STRENGTHENS THE HEART MUSCLE Exercise strengthens all of the muscles utilized in human movement, and exercise can make your heart muscle stronger, too. The heart is made up of four chambers: the left and right atria and the left and right ventricles. The left ventricle has the important job of pumping freshly oxygenated blood out of the heart and into the rest of the body for use. Regular exercise causes a small increase in the size of the left ventricle, making it easier for the heart to do its job of supplying oxygenated blood to all of the organs, muscles and systems of the body. EXERCISE LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE Blood pressure is the pressure of blood on the walls of blood vessels during the contraction and relaxation phases of the heartbeat. An optimal blood pressure for an adult is at or below 120/80 mm
Hg. When blood pressure remains elevated for extended periods of time, it can damage blood vessels throughout the body, increasing your risk for heart attack and other
life-threatening health conditions. Exercise can help to lower blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. Furthermore, exercise can help people with normal blood pressure to maintain healthy blood pressure levels. EXERCISE CAN HELP TO LOWER BAD CHOLESTEROL Cholesterol is a compound made by the liver that is needed for several functions in the body, including digestion and the production of vitamin D and several hormones. Certain people are genetically predisposed to having high cholesterol, but a sedentary lifestyle combined with consuming too much saturated fat is often the cause of high cholesterol. LDL-C, which is sometimes referred to as “bad cholesterol,” can cause blood vessels leading to the heart to become hardened and clogged. Exercise combined with a heart-healthy diet can help to lower LDL-C in the body. EXERCISE CAN BOOST GOOD CHOLESTEROL HDL-C or good cholesterol, carries cholesterol from other parts of your body back to the liver so that it can be removed. Having higher levels of HDL in the blood lowers your risk for heart disease. Both aerobic exercise and resistance training have been shown to increase HDL-C and improve overall blood lipid levels. EXERCISE CAN HELP YOU TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Both aerobic and resistance exercise can help you to maintain a healthy weight. Although there is more to weight loss than just exercise, aerobic exercise helps create an energy deficit, while resistance exercise improves lean muscle mass and body composition. This is important because excess weight, particularly in the abdominal region, can put a strain on the heart. EXERCISE IMPROVES THE BODY’S ABILITY TO USE OXYGEN. The body’s ability to consume and use oxygen, known as VO2 max, is a direct marker of aerobic fitness. Aerobic fitness is associated with a decreased risk for heart disease and other disease. Higher-intensity exercise seems to have a greater impact on VO2 max, but even moderate exercise has advantages. EXERCISE CAN HELP YOU TO FEEL HAPPIER Not only does exercise help to improve the physical heart, exercise can help to improve the emotional heart, too! That’s because exercise boosts the body’s natural feel-good hormones. These endorphins reduce feelings of pain and increase feelings of euphoria and pleasure. EXERCISE REDUCES YOUR RISK OF TYPE 2 DIABETES Diabetes is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce insulin is impaired. This results in elevated levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This can wreak havoc on major systems and organs in the body, including the heart and cardiovascular system. Individuals with diabetes are more likely to develop heart disease, and diabetes can exacerbate preexisting heart conditions. Exercise can help the body to manage both insulin and glucose more efficiently, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. EXERCISE LOWERS STRESS Sustained levels of stress can lead to chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and other conditions that can adversely affect the heart. Exercise has been shown to reduce stress by improving both mood and self-confidence, making daily hassles and challenges seem more manageable. Using Exercise as Rehabilitation 50 years ago, when people had heart disease, the medical
establishment did exactly the wrong thing—bed rest! This ended up hurting the recovery of these people and many times, killing them. Today, thank G-d, we have people up and moving within days and there are cardiac rehabilitation centers in the hospitals themselves and it is usually covered by insurance. The best thing you can do for yourself after a heart attack is to get up and get moving—but in a supervised setting. Exercise is not only the best preventative for heart disease; it is the best healer also. Hashem created us with a spiritually pure heart and for 99% of the population, we are created with a physically perfect heart as well. Unfortunately, we spend our lives doing things that damage our heart. It is up to take care of our heart with good lifestyle habits and especially exercise. Whether you are trying to prevent heart disease, recover from a heart attack, or manage your health and fitness, balanced aerobic exercise will be the key that will “add hours to your days, days to your years, and years to your life.”

THE JEWISH WEEKLY
Do please explain
COMEDY BY ED MOSS
From the moment you try to phone a human being at the airport using its rip-off premium-rate 0871 number (one that the airport admits on its website that customer often can’t get through on from abroad!), to the moment you board your aeroplane, Liverpool John Lennon Shamternational Airport must continue to proves itself as one of the most memorable experiences you can have as an air passenger . . . . . . . sadly, however, for all the wrong reasons. The airport really needs to consider changing its name to “Stand-and-Deliver Airport”. It has to be at the forefront of the world’s worst airports! I am actually confused as to how Luton Airport (another tin-pot, passenger-admission-fee operation) can
so successfully win the race to the bottom of the airport league tables year-on-year against Liverpool and Leeds Bradford, (yet another admission-fee charger) when there is such hot contention for this most prestigious of annual races in the panoply of national Rip-Off Britain Awards. Having taken on the dour security jobsworths trying valiantly to find any excuse to sell the weary passenger as many otherwise totally unnecessary plastic bags they can to place liquids in prior to pushing you through to the Duty Fleecing area (where most stuff on sale is actually cheaper on the High Street), my advice is that you take ear-plugs. This is because the sound of John Lennon spinning furiously in his grave to make room for the Peel Group to deposit the £1 per-plastic-bag and
£3 entry-free it levies on every passenger entering the awful place is beyond deafening. And as for beverages or general purchases. Definitely speak to your bank manager about arranging a loan in advance. £1.50 for a packet of “grab bag” (what a con these “grab bags” are) crisps and £5.50 for a 300g bag (£1.60 per 100g on average in the supermarkets) of cheap quality chocolates in the Duty Free (OK, yes, there was a “buy 2 for £7.50” special offer, but it’s a pack you can’t get on the high street, so flashing a “saving” is quite facile and misleading). And besides, they should not, in my opinion, be encouraging multi-buys on fattening and unhealthy confectionary). For those with the inclination, you can enjoy a 5-star £10 charge for a 2-star breakfast! What must the foreign visitor think of the place? You certainly can’t find a domestic bus, coach or taxi driver with one single good word for the place. And the passengers aren’t necessarily any more complimentary. And as for beverages. I think the Loan Arranger is required to accompany “Stand-and-Deliver Airport”. There was one other saving grace on my overall trip. This was during the 2.15am return leg of my Lisbon-Liverpool journey were one of the two (three initially, but one disappeared) Home Office people checking passports at the two out of seven passport windows that the airport deemed necessary to open in order to service the 400+ early morning
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
inward bound passengers. This also delayed my departure to the overpriced car-park by a further 40 minutes. Here, there was a charming and welcoming Liverpudlian gentleman able to keep a good sense of humour and proffer a lovely warm greeting as he and his over-worked colleague dutifully checked (taking well over an hour and a half in the process, judging by the crowd behind me – not their fault) two full Boeings worth of weary travellers from Lisbon and Malaga respectively. I can only surmise the Lennon foundation, Yoko Ono, son Julian or whoever it is who manages the memory of that great songwriter is not aware of the degree to which the Peel Group is besmirching the name of John Lennon in pursuance of ripping off the public via this thoroughly appalling airport. Meanwhile, while interiorly, Lisbon Terminal 2 (a shrine to budget flights) is not necessarily much better than that of Liverpool Airport, at least the staff are a joy and the prices thoroughly reasonable. And they don’t force the traveller into spending multiple £1’s on plastic bags for their toiletries. Common sense, intelligence and the x-ray machines definitely prevail. I can only assume Liverpool Airport feels the UK exports more terrorists than it imports. Rant over. Although I’m old enough to know better, I do enjoy a foray onto Facebook. For all we older ones may deride it, I have found it has put me back in touch with people who simply dropped out of my life thirty years ago. In fairness, they tended to drop out because it was before the internet age and I was brought up in Dublin (Ireland, for those of you lacking in geographical knowledge), but now live in Manchester (England, for those of you still lacking in geographical knowledge). Anyway, to cut a long story short, an old neighbourhood friend from Dublin made a Facebook statement that he was doing a simple survey asking friends whether they either knew what was happening with various football teams today. Myself, I am so au-fait with football that I didn't even know any teams were playing today (a Sunday), although I do remember someone in the deli saying he was
07 NOVEMBER 2017
washing his car early so he could sit down and watch “the match”, so I assume “the match” was something important on the football calendar. When it comes to football, I really cannot see what all the fuss is about, following a bunch of spitting, over-acting, overpaid and over here lager-louts. The fans seem strangely happy to part with a hard-earned £60 in exchange for a £2 shirt made in Vietnam by some half-blind teenager working 25 hours a day for $6 a week in order to advertise drinks or betting company sponsors! Are the fans really that stupid that they are happy to pay to advertise these multimillion corporations on extremely nasty and cheap shirts? Surely the fans should be paid a fee for advertising these brands on their chests, not charged a fortune for the shirt? I wish I could get someone to pay me so they could advertise my business all over their chest! To add insult to strange behaviour, the football fans all seem to “worry” about the teams and their players like a country-wide commune of amateur therapists. Otherwise quite intelligent people worrying and fretting about some oik, who, kicking a football around a field for a few hours a week, earns in a single week what it takes 8 NHS nurses or 8 members of HM Armed Forces abroad being shot at by armed morons to earn in a year! Football certainly does not in any way contribute to the fabric of my or my family's well-being, neither does it ease my worries. So while its proponents have to worry about where their next tax fiddle is coming from, or where to crash their £120,000 sports car next, I, frankly, do not care!
