GOV’T GREEN LIGHT FOR ROSH HASHANAH SERVICES 10 SEPTEMBER 2020/21 ELUL 5780
@TheJewishWeekly 158
BY DAVID SAFFER The United Synagogue has received confirmation from the government that shul services can take place in a Covid-secure way. There were growing concerns Rosh Hashanah services next week might be impacted in a major way by a spike in reported virus cases in England. Those fears have now been alleviated. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in a live televised broadcast yesterday afternoon, announced there had been 2,000 reported cases for a fourth consecutive day. A new “rule of six” will restrict gatherings to a maximum of six people. This will be enforced with fines or arrests. Johnson overviewed a ‘moonshot’ plan to control the deadly virus with mass testing. “These measures are not another national lockdown,” he said. “The whole point of them is
to avoid a second national lockdown.” Following the announcement, the US made a statement about the High Holy Days. “For many of our members the centuries-old evocative services of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a highlight of the Jewish year,” said Richard Verber, United Synagogue Communications Director. “We were pleased to receive confirmation from the government that services can take place in our synagogues in a Covid-secure way. We know there are many factors for our communities to consider as they re-assess their careful and detailed plans in the coming days in light of the Prime Minister’s
announcement. Protecting our members’ health remains paramount.” Verber added, “In addition to security concerns, this year more than ever we will be asking our members not to socialise before or after the services and to make their way to and from shul in a socially distanced way.” Synagogue attendance across the United Kingdom will be hit this year due to social distancing measures. Shul executives have been working hard to ensure services take place. Chabad-Lubavitch and Aish UK have liaised with synagogues to enable families and individuals to prepare for and the enjoy upcoming festivals.

Calls for Spanish PM to Israeli laboratory staff cancel anti-Semitic course end strike BY SIMCHA ABIR The Simon Wiesenthal Centre has called on Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, to cancel an anti-Semitic summer course at the Public University of Navarra and satellite campuses. ‘Apartheid in Palestine and the Criminalisation of Solidarity’ was due to begin yesterday and runs until October 7. Dr. Shimon Samuels, Wiesenthal Centre Director for International Relations, in a letter to Sanchez, commended Spain for adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Definition of Antisemitism in July but lamented the online course. Samuels noted, “This is apparently coordinated by Sodepaz, alleged to be linked with Batasuna Basque nationalists and, reportedly, in contact with the PLFP, a Palestinian group on the European Union terrorist list.” Omar Barghouti, head of international BDS campaign is on the programme. The Centre noted that ACOM presented a court in Pamplona, the city hosting the UPNA, with the jurisprudence to declare the boycott of Israel as illegal in Spain. The body has joined ACOM in calling on Sanchez to take measures to cancel the course on grounds of anti-Semitism, invoking the IHRA definition, that can incite “lone

wolves to attack Jewish institutions, schools, synagogues and cemeteries in Spain”. “Incitement to hatred and violence is not a human right,” Samuels added. “Even and especially on campus, where students are to be formed in open-mindedness and tolerance, not in discrimination and hate.” The letter has been shared with Madam Ursula Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and General Thomas Greminger, Secretary General of the OSCE, where Spain is an active member. This will ensure both organisations “pay attention” to the danger of anti-Semitism in all its forms across Europe, Samuels concluded.
Medical laboratory staff have ended a strike demanding improved employment terms. A preliminary deal has been reached with the Health and Finance Ministries. Following a meeting with Histadrut Labor Federation chairman Arnon Bar-David and ministry representatives, biochemists and lab workers union agreed on terms according to a statement. Final details will be announced in due course according to a statement. A pay rise is expected for laboratory technicians. Hospital, healthcare service and public health workers announced an indefinite walkout after negotiations ended at the end of August. During the action, around 2,000 technicians serviced intensive care units,
emergency rooms’ patients and maternity wards. Tests were not processed for patients awaiting hospital release or non-essential surgery. Coronavirus testing continued, but those with negative tests were not to be informed. The latter move affected foreign travel as Israelis are required to present a negative test 24 hours before flying. Technicians claimed they are paid far less than private clinics staff performing the same role. The union made it clear low pay hit the sector’s ability to recruit staff who took private sector posts. According to reports, union’s have demanded a minimum wage increase to NIS 50 ($15) an hour.
ZAKA life-saving initiative BY LEAH WAXLER ZAKA volunteers have trained women in the Lower Galilee town of Deir Al Asad basic lifesaving skills. The landmark joint initiative between ZAKA’s Eshet Lapidot and Deir Al Asad local council will be used in the home and educational frameworks. The free course is part of a large-scale, community-wide initiative to train every woman, basic first aid and resuscitation techniques to save lives in an emergency before the arrival of qualified emergency personnel. Mothers, carers, teacher and housewives have attended the four-hour course that includes CPR on a child and infant, treatment of strangulation, identification of medical emergencies in children and how to create a safe environment. ZAKA paramedic volunteers deliver the course that combines theoretical study and hands-on practice. The initiative follows recent data that two-thirds of children’s hospitalisations are attributed to accidents at home. Among cases are electric shock, ingestion

of a foreign body and contact with hazardous substances. Most cases occur when one of the parents, often the mother, is alone at home. The first reaction is to the emergency services as individuals are unaware how to handle the crisis. But this is the time when the ‘four golden minutes’ passes, a critical time when the brain is starved of oxygen and damage may be irreversible. The courses have been conducted amidst restrictions under coronavirus pandemic. Deir Al Asad council head Ahmad Dabah presented participants with certificates and first aid kits. ZAKA is a UN-recognised international humanitarian volunteer organisation that trains and operates thousands of volunteers in Israel and overseas in search, recovery and rescue. Philanthropic organisation Eshet Lapidot is the brainchild of ZAKA chairman Yehuda Meshi-Zahav. The group facilitates social community initiatives for women in Israel and around the world, particularly in health and well-being.

Trump nominated for Nobel Peace Prize Ambassador’s residence in Herzliya sold BY ROBERT LEVY
US President Donald Trump has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the historic peace accord between Israel and United Arab Emirates. Norwegian far-right Progress Party politician Christian Tybring-Gjedde nominated Trump. “No matter how Trump acts at home and what he says at press conferences, he has absolutely a chance at getting the Nobel Peace Prize,” Tybring-Gjedde, reportedly told The Associated Press. Tybring-Gjedde noted Trump “meets the criteria” for the accolade on Fox News. “For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees,” he said. Tybring-Gjedde explained in a nomination letter that other Middle Eastern countries would follow in the footsteps of the UAE. “This agreement could be a game changer that will turn the Middle East into a region of cooperation and prosperity,” he added. Tybring-Gjedde also lauded Trump for withdrawing troops from the Middle East. “Trump has broken a 39-year-old streak of American Presidents either starting a war or bringing the United States into an international armed conflict,” he noted.

winner or university professors can make nominations. Tybring-Gjedde selected Trump for the 2018 award for his attempts to reconcile North and South Korea during a Singapore summit with North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un. Trump was a 100/1 outsider for the prize this week, Betfair have cut his odds to 20/1 alongside Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. “Trump’s shock inclusion has seen the odds of him winning the prize he has craved for so long fall significantly,” Betfair’s Sam Rosbottom reportedly noted in a statement. “And now in a year where he is an 11/10 shot to win re-election, it’s impossible to rule him out entirely. “ Trump has stiff competition from New Zealand politician Jacinda Ardern who is among frontrunners for her response to the coronavirus pandemic. The World Health Organisation is current favourite at 5/2 followed by Greta Thunberg 3/1 and Ardern 5/1.
“For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees.”
The U.S. State Department has sold the ambassador’s official residence in Herzliya. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem made the announcement but would not name the buyer or sale price. Israeli media reported that the highly sought-after Herzliya property had an asking price of over $80m. ‘’The buyer was selected solely on the basis of having submitted the highest and best offer,” a statement noted. “The selected buyer and the unsuccessful bidders have been notified.” Globes reportedly identified the buyer as U.S. casino giant Sheldon Adelson, a supporter President Donald Trump. The report has not been confirmed. Trump’s administration moved the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018 after recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. It is believed the old residence will be vacated next year. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has reportedly described Trump’s administration decision as “short-sighted and frivolous” to move the embassy.

40 ‘hot spots’ begin ‘night-time’ curfew
BY DAVID SAFFER Communities in 40 ‘hot spots’ are under a week-long ‘night-time’ curfew (after 7pm5am) to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Israel has seen 1,048 fatalities according to latest Ministry data, over 137,000 people have been infected since the start of the pandemic, 454 are in serious a condition, 143 patients are on ventilators. Jerusalem has 2,601 current cases, Bnei Brak 872 and Ashdod 776 cases. Charedi politicians rejected coronavirus czar Prof. Ronni Gamzu’s curfew plan as it discriminated against their communities. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under pressure from Charedi parties over the ruling on Tuesday. Israel’s leader condemned opposition chiefs as “irresponsible” over Health Ministry regulations. “They are driving anarchy, infection and the death of people,” he reportedly said. “We must observe the directives of the Health Ministry, this is crucial for success.” He added, “Unfortunately, politicians are exploiting the situation for political capital by calling not to follow the instructions. Dangerous and irresponsible statements by public representatives could lead to disobedience to Health Ministry and Israel Police instructions, and as a result, to a loss of lives.” Defence Minister Benny Gantz, who praised the IDF, Health Ministry and Gamzu over their actions in battling the pandemic,” backed Netanyahu. “With each passing week, we will continue to improve this issue,” he reportedly said. “Our goal, eventually, is to break the chain of infection, quarantine the right people and leave them there for the minimal time possible as determined by the Health Ministry.” Israel Police will enforce the curfew.
“The increased police presence that will begin tonight comes after a particularly long and intense period, in which Israeli police officers work around the clock to enforce regulations and maintain public health alongside other tasks.” Police commissioner Moti Cohen reportedly said on Tuesday. He added, “Our enforcement policy will continue to rely, first and foremost on discourse, education, discretion and cooperation with the public. This is what I expect from each and every commander and officer on the mission. The key to success is the public’s obedience to the rules and cooperation with the different authorities. We expect the public to observe the provisions of the law and obey the police instructions, because only together will we succeed in maintaining the health of all of us and curbing the spread of the virus.” Mayor of Eilat, Meir Yitzhak Halevi, lambasted the government decision, noting he did not have “a shadow of a clue” why Eilat was on the ‘red’ list. “It is a ludicrous decision, this is a city that in July and August hosted more than half a million Israeli tourists,” he reportedly said. “All this time we have been a ‘green city’ with a single-digit number of verified coronavirus cases.” Curfews would hit the tourist industry. “This is the dumbest thing they could do. We are still bleeding from the previous lockdown,” Halevi said. Ultra-Orthodox community heads, Bnei
Brak Mayor Avraham Rubinstein, Elad Mayor Yirael Porush and Beitar Illit Mayor Meir Rubinstein, warned Netanyahu in writing he was mismanaging the health crisis in the religious sector and creating division in orthodox communities. Netanyahu faced the wrath of Bnei Brak health committee chairman Moshe Morgenstern after news broke. “This is a day that will be written in the history books,” he reportedly said. “Today is remembered as the day when Netanyahu and the ultra-Orthodox public divorced each other.” “The population is angry and baffled,” Morgenstern added. “With all due respect Netanyahu, he is not irreplaceable.” Ministers took time in approving the measures over 40 cities, communities and neighbourhoods. Aryeh Deri, Minister of the Interior, called for a nationwide lockdown rather than limited on Charedi communities. “We must give the night-time curfew on highly infected cities that is due to be imposed a chance, but it will not be enough on its own to stop the spread of the virus,” Prof Itamar Grotto reportedly said. Ministers, meantime, reviewed ‘red ‘zones for restrictions relating to the upcoming High Holy Days. “We believe it would be wise to hold holiday celebrations with immediate family members and in groups numbering no more than 20 people,” Grotto noted. He would not comment on shutting schools during this period.

10 SEPTEMBER 2020 MK Yifat Shasha-Biton, Knesset committee chair, opposes a nationwide lockdown during the period. “I cannot understand the obsession with imposing a full lockdown on the country,” she reportedly said. “We have been in this for half a year and the health care system should have been bolstered. They haven’t done it.” She added, “Anyone who thinks a virus can be defeated does not talk realistically. Precise data must be presented to the public in order to regain its trust. “It’s clear we are in an epidemic, but we need to look at the concrete numbers when it comes to seriously ill and intubated patients, our situation is stable.” Shasha-Bitton noted a lockdown during the High Holidays could have economic ramifications. “Whoever says there will be no damage to the economy during the closure on the holidays does not understand how the economy works,” she said. “In the periphery, people live from the money earned during this period for the rest of the year. Gathering should be regulated according to the rules.” In related news, tensions are mounting in the Knesset, especially with Charedi parties. Gamzu apologised for criticising ultra-Orthodox Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky last week. Kanievsky reportedly told yeshiva students not to get tested for the coronavirus, which Gamza slated. There were calls for his resignation after it was became known Kanievsky did not make the comments. “I regret the misunderstanding as a result of the biased publication of the remarks of Rabbi Kanievsky, whom I respect and admire, and take back what I said,” Gamzu reportedly said. “I checked it and it seems Rabbi Kanievsky never gave an instruction not to get checked, but was rather a decision based on the opinion of several rabbis for specific cases of yeshiva students in closed capsules, who had already taken coronavirus tests, and in accordance with policies that were set in advance.” Commenting on an increasing infection rate, Gamzu reportedly noted, “The battle against coronavirus is a national effort and I am determined to bring down morbidity by any means possible.” He added, “I was asked by the Knesset’s Law, Justice and Constitution Committee to increase the number of tests in Bnei Brak and other ultra-Orthodox cities, and already today drive-in complexes and inspection centres will open in all these cities. Increasing the amount of tests is essential for truncating the infection chains.” Meantime, under a quarter of Israelis have paid penalties for breaking coronavirus regulations according to the Enforcement and Collection Authority. Data to September 7 showed 208,259 penalties had been handed out totalling NIS 107.3 million. “Many citizens apply to have it revoked and the main reason they give for not paying the fine on time is rumours that fines were cancelled or a pardon to everyone who received fines,” reportedly noted Collection Authority head Doron Tashtit.

CAA condemn University of Warwick BY ROBERT LEVY Campaign Against Antisemitism has condemned the University of Warwick regarding a lecturer for “peddling” anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about the ‘Israel lobby’. CAA have cited the institutions’ actions as an “abdication” of its academic responsibility and duties towards minority students. The university dismissed a complaint by Warwick Jewish and Israel Society (JISoc) against sociology lecturer Dr Goldie Osuri who described allegations of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party as “very much an Israeli lobby kind of idea” in a lecture in

November 2019. CAA obtained a recording of the suggested comments by Osuri. Osuri, in an email to students, shown to CAA, promoted the work of Jewish Voice for Labour and lamented that issues were not “raised in the seminars”. Warwick backed Osuri earlier this year, as comments “opened up the space for dialogue and discussion” as expected in an academic environment. According to Wawrick, the statement in the lecture held the principles and values of “tolerance and free speech”. It is understood the university has determined there are “insufficient grounds to progress the complaint” in a recent letter

Students have charged the university with failing to investigate the matter properly and accused decision-makers of a conflict of interest. It is believed they will escalate the complaint to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education. A CAA spokesperson commented, “The University of Warwick’s decision not to take action against a lecturer peddling anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about the ‘Israel lobby’ being behind the well-documented and indisputable institutional anti-Semitism in the Labour Party is an abdication of both its academic responsibility and its duties towards its minority students. “Sadly, this determination is of a piece with Warwick’s decision not to adopt the International Definition of Antisemitism. Had it done so, it might have recognised Dr Goldie Osuri’s remarks for what they were and taken appropriate action. It is little wonder that the University’s Jewish students are losing confidence in the administration.” The university is under pressure as it has not adopted the definition. Earlier this year, Andrew Percy MP slammed Warwick in the House of Commons over its stance.

Percy, who co-chaired the All Party Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism, noted, “we have a big problem with antiSemitism on campuses”, citing “universities like Warwick, whose Vice-Chancellor is refusing to sign up” to the definition. The vice-chancellor reportedly refused to adopt the definition as it did not offer “any added value”. The university, however, would be “mindful” of the Definition. The defendant reportedly had “graphic” video footage of a terrorist attack on his telephone and had praised the terrorist behind the mass terror attack in Christchurch, New Zealand. Salman and Kushner have discussed the challenges of Israel and the Palestinians reaching a lasting peace. Israel, meanwhile, will reportedly call for a compensation package from the United States over the proposed sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to the UAE. The topic was a diversion to the euphoria of the accord. Netanyahu repeatedly made his stance clear on the arms sale being part of the accord. “At no point in the talks between Israel and the United States that led to the historic breakthrough, did Netanyahu give Israel’s consent to the sale of advanced weapons to the UAE,” his office noted in a
statement. It has been reported that the US-UAE deal came about with Israel labouring to manufacture defence systems domestically due to the coronavirus pandemic. Israel Aerospace Industries offered to manufacture the systems for the IDF but the Finance Ministry rebuffed the proposal as too expensive. Kushner reiterated the US stance that Israel’s military edge in the region will not be compromised. The UAE arms deal with the UAE is expected to be discussed in Congress this year. US President Donald Trump announced the Israel-UAE agreement on August 13.

BY ADAM MOSES Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan will lead delegations at a historic accord ceremony in Washington next Tuesday. U.S. President Donald Trump will host the event after the two nations agreed to normalise last week. Netanyahu said he was “proud” to be taking part in the ceremony on Tuesday night. Other Arab nations are expected to follow UAE’s lead recognising Israel. Rumours abounded all week as to an official announcement that came after the Palestinian leadership reportedly tempered its criticism of the Israel-UAE deal before an Arab League meeting in Cairo yesterday. A draft resolution does not condemn the UAE over the US-brokered agreement. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also banned offensive statements towards UAE and Arab leaders. Meantime, plans are afoot for the UAE to visit to Israel this month. Reports of a historic diplomatic trip, possibly September 22nd, follows on from the landmark accord reached last month. A provisional itinerary is believed to be coming together. Netanyahu invited a UAE delegation to visit Israel through National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat who led the Israeli delegation in the UAE. The UAE delegation is not confirmed but is a response to the landmark Abu Dhabi trip. Israeli and UAE officials have declined to officially comment. In related news, Israeli ministers noted that annual trade between the nations could hit $4 billion. Netanyahu has welcomed news of a joint committee to promote investment. There will also be collaboration in banking services and payment regulations. Meantime, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has spoken with Trump regarding the way

Calls for US to extradite terrorist Tamimi
Ahlam Tamimi
PHOTO: MEMRI
BY DAVID SAFFER Eighteen Jewish organisations in the United States have called on the US government to pressure Jordan’s King Abdullah II to extradite celebrity terrorist Ahlam Tamimi. Tamimi is the Jordan fugitive who masterminded the horrific 2001 Sbarro pizzeria bombing in Jerusalem in August 2001. Fifteen people died including two American nationals, Malki Roth, 15, and Shoshana Hayman Greenbaum, 31. Another victim, an American mother remains comatose since the bombing. Families calling for justice have almost hit its target of 10,000 signatures in a petition. Petitioners have expressed outrage over Jordan’s refusal to extradite Tamimi and called on US President Donald Trump’s government to hold Jordan accountable under its extradition treaty. The group want to impose government legislation impacting financial aid to Jordan. Tamimi, a key plotter in the attack, was e siv lu sit rg/ / c x i w o r e ! She claimed credit for the attack, admitting to scouting the location of Sbarro, a popular place in the downtown Jerusalem and bringing the bomb to its door. Tamimi, escorted Izz al-Din Shuheil al-Masri, who she had never met, from Ramallah to Jerusalem by bus and taxi. Dressed as tourists, she walked him from the Old City’s Damascus Gate into the commercial centre. Minutes after seeking safety, al-Masri detonated a guitar case inside the pizzeria. Tamimi selected the restaurant during a lunch hour as there was a Jewish religious school nearby but was disappointed cloudy weather affected the number of people around. Arrested a few weeks after the attack and tried in an Israeli court, Tamimi confessed. Sentenced to 16 terms of life imprisonment, Tamimi was conditionally freed in a 2011 deal in which Israel secured the release of Gilad Shalit, held hostage by Hamas. “We have been working hard to move public opinion in the US and in other countries to stand with us,” said Arnold Roth, whose daughter, Malki, was murdered in the attack. “It’s an ongoing process. The organisations speak publicly and with one voice in this extraordinary call for justice for Malki and the other Sbarro victims. It’s time that Jordan’s disregard for its legal, diplomatic and moral obligations to hand Tamimi over to U.S. justice was brought to an end.” The petition statement comes weeks after reports that Trump’s administration is considering withholding assistance to Jordan as leverage to secure Tamimi’s extradition to Washington. The petition states that Tamimi is the most wanted female terrorist in the world and subject to a $5 Million US government reward. She was the first woman to be admitted to the ranks of Hamas terrorists and remains unrepentant, publicly revelling in her role as planner of the Sbarro devastation. The US Justice Department unveiled terrorism charges against her in 2017 and notified Jordan of its request that she be extradited to face trial in Washington. Jordan signed an extradition treaty with the US in 1995 and has extradited Jordanian fugitives every time requested. But has stated its refusal to hand her over due to a technical argument. Jordan receives $1.5 billion a year in U.S. aid. Roth’s parents have campaigned since 2012. Their persistence has led to two developments. In December 2019, Congress legislated a sanction that potentially will stop US foreign aid to Jordan because of its treaty breach. President Trump signed this law.
Seven Congressional lawmakers wrote to Jordan’s Ambassador in Washington in April noting how the sanction reflects the deep concern of Congress, the Administration and American people. The Malki Foundation is an Israeli charity based in Jerusalem was founded in memory of Malki by her family in 2001 to support families of children with severe disabilities in Israel. Shabbat Walk youth run, ride and raise for charity

Over 280 young people took part in fundraising activities raising a combined amount of £206,000 for the organisation Shabbat Walk. 190 girls took part in a mud run on the 2nd Aug. The girls completed different obstacles whilst getting covered in mud. Yael Forta who ran the mud run said “the girls had the best time whilst also being able to fundraise for a cause they believe in. It was so great to see the smiles on their faces” 90 boys took part in a two day hilly cycling challenge in the Chiltern hills, with the faster groups riding 220km. The cyclists have been training throughout the year to be able to complete the ride. The ride was accompanied by 50 adults who ensured the safety of the young riders. At the end of the first day the riders were treated to some light entertainment by a comedian hypnotist plus catered meals Avi Dubiner who project managed the bike ride said “The boys worked so hard to train and fundraise for this bike ride. We owe a huge thank you to all our riders, adult riders, Hatzolo, drivers, helpers, sponsors

and donors. None of this would have been possible without them” Shabbat walk CEO Eliezer Gilbert, who also rode, said “Our Charity focuses on the youth of our community and how they can get involved in giving. It’s great to see so many of them actively involved in ensuring the continuity of all the work we do whilst also bonding and having a great time. Especially right now when there are so many restrictions A massive thank you to the entire community for supporting us and donating so generously. Also a big thank you to the event sponsors PGPT, ELI-G Estates and FCS”.
The Jewish Deaf Association (JDA) is distributing 2,000 transparent masks within the Jewish community to enable deaf people to communicate with their doctors, teachers, care workers, colleagues, family and friends during COVID-19. The initiative has come about thanks to a £12,000 donation from The Locker Foundation, allowing JDA to supply a variety of clear masks to people with hearing loss and the organisations working with them. JDA Chief Executive Sue Cipin said: “The use of face masks in COVID-19 has presented people with hearing loss with huge challenges, as it impossible for someone who can’t hear to see that you are speaking to them or to understand what you are saying. “When one of our clients had it explained to her by handwritten note that she has cancer, I knew we had to find a way to break down this barrier. “Now, thanks to the fantastic generosity of The Locker Foundation, anyone who has a hearing loss can carry clear masks with them and ask the person they need to chat with to wear one… and our client can understand what is being said to her at her chemo sessions.” JDA has spent months searching the globe and working with UK manufacturers
to develop clear masks, which all suit different purposes – from a mask that can be worn comfortably all day to a disposable one that can be used by key workers seeing lots of different people. In addition to being given to JDA clients, masks have also already been distributed to: • The Hatzola Jewish paramedic service for use when they are called out to an emergency for a patient with hearing loss. • JFS Special Educational Needs (SEN) class so their deaf pupils can see what their teaching assistants are saying to them. • Jewish Day Schools with deaf pupils to enable them to chat with friends when they need to wear masks in the corridors. • Care workers looking after people with hearing loss in their own homes. Malcolm Carter and Susie Segal, Trustees of The Locker Foundation, said: “We are delighted to be able to support such an innovative and important project for the people within our community who have hearing loss.” If you would like transparent masks for your organisation, please contact Olimpia at JDA on 020 8446 0502 or email olimpia@jdeaf. org.uk.

Kisharon pupils may have moderate, severe or profound and multiple learning disabilities and we are here to support every pupil achieve their full potential and maximise their independence. Our approach to education is based on our core values and beliefs. We value every pupil as an individual and we believe that emotional wellbeing is essential to developing academic success. I am so excited to welcome new and current students to our new school and be able to further enhance the education we were previously offering.” The contrast from Kisharon’s early beginnings could not be more marked.

I look forward to seeing all the pupils flourish.” Kisharon trustee, Andrew Loftus, who was entrusted by the board to deliver on the most ambitious of Kisharon’s Loftus Learning Centres, commented, “I am enormously grateful to the huge effort of the superb team we put together, the architects, planning advisers, consultants, builders, project manager, school governors and Kisharon professionals, who all played their part in ensuring that the school was completed on time and most importantly on budget. Parents of both existing and prospective pupils who I have shown round have told me they never imagined their children would
Philip Goldberg, Chairman of Trustees said, “When I first became involved, Kisharon only ran a very small school and had just opened a centre for young adults. I could not have imagined then where the charity would be now - and to see this specially designed state-of-the-art school open is a very emotional day for me.” Chair of Governors at Kisharon School and a Kisharon Trustee, Emma Castleton – (whose son Elias will attend the school) has been a driving force and advocate for improved facilities for children with complex needs, “This is such an exciting time for both Kisharon and the wider special education community. We are truly grateful to all our donors, trustees and the team who enabled us to build our state- of-the art School which
be given an environment such as this. The teachers are enthused and excited by how much more they will be able to provide to the pupils, educationally, technologically and physically, and from our key donors an acknowledgement that their money has been well spent. I can’t wait to see the look on the children’s faces when they come to their new school for the first time but even more importantly seeing the results and benefits over the coming years. People from outside the organisation embraced our mission and collaborated with us, like the Pre-eminent Planning Lawyer, with no prior connection either to Kisharon or the Jewish Community, became so taken by what we were trying to do that he ended up insisting that he wouldn’t charge for his services. That sense of purpose and pride permeated throughout the professional team, who accepted that no detail was too minor, and regularly went the extra mile and beyond to find solutions that were creative and cost effective, and to the incredible encouragement and generous support of our donors. Our mantra during the project was to ensure that “we didn’t move an old school into a new building”, but that doesn’t end with the opening of the school, so much is changing in the world of SEND, through technology, communication and collaboration, I am immensely proud and confident that we have created a school that is armed and ready to continuously adapt and develop and provide the best possible opportunities to the children who will go there”.

Jewish Care’s Pen Pal project connecting the generations During lockdown, Jewish Care set up a pen pal project to connect young and older members of the community. Though not everyone is online the pen pals write to each other with the help of letter writing assistants to support the letters being sent by email. In the case of one pair of pen pals, they have discovered they are related. Ninetyyear-old Doreen Wejchendler from Gants Hill and 14-year-old actor, Aaron Gelkoff, from Chigwell, have been taking part in Jewish Care’s pen pal project. Doreen says, “We’ve been writing letters back and forth and when Aaron told us he was in the shows my daughter realised the connection between our families and that we are distantly related. I phoned up his grandfather, Barry, and know his greataunt. It’s very nice that he’s writing. Aaron is a student at West Hatch High School and lives in Chigwell. He has performed in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as Gavroche, in Les Miserable in the West End production, co-starred in Caroline, or Change and starred in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾. He says, “I’ve been part of Jewish Care’s MIKE leadership programme at Redbridge Jewish Community Centre (RJCC) for a while, that’s where I heard about the pen pal project and I wanted to get involved. I know that going into lockdown must have been a real shock for people living on their own and they might have been finding it really difficult. “I thought this was a nice way to make new friends and it’s a coincidence that our family are connected. I like keeping in touch and writing to Doreen and we talk about our shared interests, for example, we both spent our birthday in lockdown and we both have pets so I asked Doreen for a photo of her cat Charlie and sent her a photo of my cat, Roxy.” Harrison, 12, has been writing to Aubrey Green, 85. Harrison’s mum, Victoria, said, “We saw that Jewish Care were asking for volunteers to write to their members at the beginning of lockdown and thought it would be a great opportunity for Harrison to do something for the community. He understands how important it is to stay in touch, especially as Harrison has three great grandparents in their 90s. He has enjoyed sharing his lockdown stories and shared interests with Aubrey.” Aubrey, says, “We’ve been writing to one another for a couple of months and it’s lovely that a young person like Harrison is taking the time to write letters to someone of an age like myself. It’s very important to stay connected and to keep a positive bright attitude, especially in these times. We chat about ourselves and he tells me what team he supports. It’s a pleasure to do something like this.” Shirley, who’s 87, previously enjoyed going to Jewish Care’s Redbridge Supportive Communities tea parties, now attends
drawn which I have kept. Claire told me that her little boy was turning 5 soon, so I sent him a birthday card. I enjoy writing to them with the help of a volunteer, Joanne, who sends the emails. I was going to the supportive communities tea parties and to Redbridge Jewish Community Centre. I miss it and let’s all hope we get back together soon.” Claire says, “It has been such a pleasure writing to Joyce and receiving her letters in return. She is so thoughtful and kind. For my son Alex’s birthday, she sent him a card and stickers via the community centre who forwarded it to me at home. She also included some stickers for my daughter Talia, so she wasn’t left out! I am so looking forward to the day we can meet in person for a cup of tea.” Alison Smardina, Jewish Care’s Supportive Communities Officer, says, “We’re so pleased that the pen pal project is connecting older and young people across the generations. It’s really important for us to remember that many older people are still isolated at home and while they can’t socialise at community centres and supportive communities tea parties, the pen pal project has been a welcome alternative way to stay connected to the community through Jewish Care.”

on Zoom when she can. She has been writing to Talia Jacobs and says, “I like receiving the emails from Talia on my iPad and writing back and I was very pleased to discover that we have a local connection and things in common, with some of my relatives living on the same road as Talia so when I tell her about my family she has some idea of who they are.” Talia Jacobs, who has been volunteering with Jewish Care’s Six Sundays programme for a few years. The programme sees young people visiting care homes for six Sundays a year to take part in activities with residents. Talia says, “We’ve been writing regularly for the last couple months and it’s lovely to hear from Shirley. We let each other know what we’ve been watching on Netflix and exchange news about how we are finding lockdown. We’ve played Jewish geography and have found a nice connection through my neighbours. Its been a great thing to do during these times as I can’t visit the residents with the Six Sundays programme at the moment, so it’s a good alternative way to keep on volunteering.” Joyce and Claire with her two children are writing to each other. Joyce, 88 says, “It’s so nice of Claire to take the time to write to me, I’m sure she’s very busy with two children. The children are just adorable, they sent me lovely pictures they’d

Chabad and Aish ‘High Holy Days’ initiatives BY DAVID SAFFER Chabad-Lubavitch and Aish UK are distributing creative materials across the Jewish community for the High Holy Days. Both organisations have answered the call for families and individuals unable to attend services this year as the coronavirus crisis is set to hit synagogue attendances. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new measures yesterday regarding social distance gatherings to come into force on Monday. Shofar blowing renditions planned by Chabad and Aish will follow the new measures. Chabad has been at the forefront of Jewish education throughout the lockdown period. They are gearing up for not only for Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur but also Succot and Simchat Torah. “It has been an unprecedented time,” Rabbi Bentzi Sudak, CEO, ChabadLubavitch told The Jewish Weekly. “We rose to the challenge with our ‘Seders to Go’ initiative for 4,000 families and at the same time we moved everything over to Zoom like many others. “A lot of innovation was combining Zoom online and in the real world. For children’s programmes, they would get a package for say a baking event with ingredients delivered to their home, or a list, and they would bake together with other children online. For Shavuot, each home had a ‘How To’ guide and everything you needed to celebrate the festival at home. There was cheese cake and table cards to play with kids to engage people around the conversation table. “Obviously, we are now doing the same thing for Rosh Hashonah with a special box that people will receive. It includes a ‘How To’ guide for the entire Tishreh. So it is for Rosh Hashonah, Yom Kippur, Succot and Simchat Torah.” Rabbi Sudak explained that in Kaballah, during the High Holidays, spiritually, we ‘stock up’ on everything needed to last the entire year during this period. “Our package gives off that message, how each holiday (festival) impacts, enhances and enriches the life for the next year,” he noted. “The box includes apple and honey, honey cake, a ‘Follow the Machzor’ and ‘How To’ guide for the entire holiday. “Before each holiday there is also a one-hour course, ‘Making it Meaningful at Home’, that anyone can take. Each

local centre teaches you how to celebrate the festivals at home making it meaningful along with a guide and handbook that is easy to follow.” Rabbi Sudak commented on how Chabad would run services at shuls. “We are having services in marquees with social distancing,” he said. “Each location has things in a different way based on local circumstances. Some synagogues have partnered with us to do this.” Rabbi Sudak added, “We are bringing shofar to people. The main thing you do on Rosh Hashonah is to hear the shofar.
At Hampstead Garden Suburb, we are doing ‘shofar on the block’. Throughout the day, at every small cluster of streets or intersection at certain times people will be able to hear the shofar being blown. Local Chabad’s have details for other areas. “For those that cannot make it, Chabad will come to a house to blow it and will explain the beauty of why it is the most important moment of the year spiritually.” A number of Chabad’s are running shofar training classes for a community. “This way anyone can blow for their families and neighbours,” Rabbi Sudak enthused. “Everyone should hear the shofar at Rosh Hashonah.” Aish UK has been distributing Rosh Hashanah boxes and materials to over 8,000 households. The organisation has looked at ways to support communities making difficult decisions about going to synagogue, joining smaller services, running services or staying home. ‘Rosh Hashanah in a Box’ contains

items that will assist Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur preparation. It includes an explanatory Machzor for the High Holydays and DIY children’s service booklet for families with young children. They is a user-friendly guide to Simanim, an original Aish card game ‘Jewnomia’, a ‘Where’s Wally’ style mat and Rosh Hashanah gift of Apple tea, Apple Bar and honey for those who want to get into the right food mood for the Jewish New Year. Thousands of boxes have been packed by staff from Aish, Jewish Futures and volunteers to ensure they complete a huge task in a COVID secure environment which have been distributed directly or in kosher shops in London and through partnerships with 25 synagogues across the UK. Orders have been shipped nationally and overseas to New York, Mexico and Canada. “Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur play an incredibly important part in how we start the new Jewish year and the thought

of so many Jews not going to their synagogues due to the COVID situation was heart-breaking to think about,” commented Rabbi Daniel Rowe, Aish UK executive director. “We felt by offering both physical

I’m delighted between 30,000 and 40,000 Jews will be benefitting from our boxes, educational material and services.” He added, “For so many people Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur is a lifeline and connection to Judaism. This is a very powerful way for people to stay connected, be inspired and uplifted.” “Many people for the High Holy Days are missing out on the overall experience so we decided to bring the experience to them,” commented Dovid Lichtig, managing director, Aish UK. “The box has all the elements for a full festival experience for prayer, food and entertainment.” He added, “I’ve can’t think of another initiative to reach so many people at such an auspicious time of the year. This is a monumental project, it has been a tremendous team effort to create an amazing product that can enhance the High Holidays.” “This has been a herculean task,” commented Lee Jacobs, Rosh Hashanah box programme manager. “I’m so pleased that we were able to pull it all off.” Aish are organising people to blow the shofar over the High Holy Days. They have also planned educators and service leaders to help staff synagogues to run additional services but need support either on-site or off-site. Aish are supporting over 15 synagogues in London, Manchester and Leeds.

DALTON GALILO
Galilo is a wine from the heart of the Galilee, upon which spirit and stone we built Dalton Winery. The many ammonite fossils, oak trees and wild herbs that cover our parcels in this region give Galilo a pure sense of local soil. This year the wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) from our Elkosh Vineyard, Shiraz (40%) also from Elkosh and Grenache Noir (10%) from nearby Even-Menachem. The Elkosh Vineyard is our premium site in the Western Galilee. At 600m it benefits from a cooling sea breeze and is characterized by chalky soils filled with ammonite fossils and wild Mediterranean herbs and flowers growing at its edges. Even-Menachem, close to Elkosh, is similar but with more clay soil. Both vineyards are sustainably farmed, we do not spray weeds and use environmentally friendly solutions wherever possible.

Amelia fronts Camp Simcha’s Rosh Hashanah appeal Camp Simcha is reaching out to supporters this Rosh Hashanah via the mother of a little girl who spent much of lockdown isolated in hospital. Lisa Beaton, mother to 11-year-old Amelia, tells of the lifeline which the charity’s support gave them as the two of them spent eight weeks at Great Ormond Street Hospital, while her husband and three sons were home in Harrogate. Amelia was just nine months when she was diagnosed with an unknown neuromuscular disorder which affects all her muscles and movement in her limbs, causing weakness, pain and fatigue. It also affects her gastric and respiratory system, so she often needs to use a feeding tube. Over the years Amelia has had to cope with many surgeries, distressing and painful procedures and frequent hospital stays.

“Camp Simcha has been our family’s lifeline when Amelia goes into hospital, helping with meals, hospital transport and bespoke support,” says Mrs Beaton. “Due to Covid-19, Amelia’s recent hospital stay was much longer than usual and we could not have any visitors. Getting through isolation in hospital over lockdown would have been impossible without Camp Simcha. “My Family Liaison Officer Robyn was always there for me – offering constant support and ready to organise all the different practical help we needed and so much more, in the form of treats and activities they sent in to brighten each long day. “Having a seriously ill child during a global pandemic is terrifying. For us and so many other families Camp Simcha has been a constant and that has made a huge difference.”
Despite an income loss this year of £400K, due to cancelled challenges and events, the charity has maintained its high level of practical and therapeutic support for all families who need them, working quickly and creatively to adapt its services. Camp Simcha’s chief executive Neville Goldschneider explains: “We have been as present as ever for our existing families, as well as all the new ones who have received diagnoses during lockdown and beyond. “In many cases families have needed us more than ever, having found themselves in an impossible situation where as well as living in fear for their very vulnerable child, a lot of their usual support network was unavailable due to Covid-19. Meanwhile siblings, often the forgotten sufferers, were also at home, needing their parents’ attention. “Our Family Liaison Officers have continued to be there 24/7, offering concentrated emotional support to our families, while working with our services team to provide support in the form of safe respite care and hospital transports; Kosher crisis meals, which has seen a big increase in need; virtual counselling, tutoring and therapeutic arts at home sessions; as well as online coffee mornings and parent support groups.” The charity’s new parent portal on the website has kept families entertained with magic shows, exercise work-outs, story time and more, as have a steady stream of activities being sent in to families - from
baking and gardening kits to books, games to picnic boxes. “Meanwhile, we are still finding ways to deliver Camp Simcha’s special brand of fun and attention which is so impactful, especially in such isolating times,” says Mr Goldschneider. “Virtual events such as bake-offs, treasure hunts and talent competitions and more recently visits from the magical Camp Simcha float have brought some light in very dark times.” You can donate to Camp Simcha’s Rosh Hashanah campaign to help the charity to continue providing its vital services, here https://www.campsimcha.org.uk/ rosh-hashanah/

July, August and September 1940 were marked by the aerial battles taking place over the South of England as the German Luftwaffe attempted to destroy British defences ready for an attack from the sea. Despite the tactic of Blitzkrieg succeeding across the rest of western Europe it was continuously rebuffed by the RAF, Allies and the refugee airmen of Europe until eventually the Battle of Britain halted the Nazis’ plans. In this talk we will explore what the Battle of Britain really was, who we have to thank for its success and why it meant so much for the events of the Second World War.

Pomegranates; breakfast, lunch & dinner! BY DENISE PHILLIPS Over the last few years there has been a pomegranate explosion as these tiny colourful healthy seeds have worked their way into our daily diets in to exciting dishes from morning to night. Trends in eating for good health has elevated the use of pomegranates into so many recipes. Pomegranates have numerous health benefits as they help to protect the body from various diseases like type 2 diabetes, the juice is rich in anti-oxidants and regular intake of pomegranate juice has been shown to lower blood pressure levels in as little as two weeks; the edible seeds called arils are a good source of vitamin C, potassium and fibre. Pomegranates are a great snack, you can enjoy them like popcorn, toss into salads, top with yoghurt, add to porridge and cereals. I do recommend that you buy the pomegranates whole and then deseed them as their shelf life ready-seeded is extremely short and
very often when you open the container, they are sour. Used as a garnish, their vibrant colour often lifts the look of a recipe that otherwise can look quite dull. Salads, stews, cakes and cupcakes; pomegranates create a beautiful hue on the dish. Scatter on top of dips like hummus and babaganoush. Stir into grains, add to rice, bulgur wheat for your tabbouleh, quinoa, lentils, and the like. Add at the end of cooking for best results. Add to fruit salads; they look particularly impressive when you combine specific colours together or use as a contrast. Pomegranates marry well with pears, other berries, melon and sharon fruit. Blend into juice for smoothies with other fruits and vegetables for a tasty morning

health kick. I have also used the juice to make icing for a cake. Use the juice as part of a cocktail; a combination of white wine, sparkling wine or soda add a colourful touch to an alcoholic drink. However, you chose to use this delicious tasty fruit, it is special because it is a biblical fruit. The pomegranate is one of the seven species; it is mentioned in the Song of Songs and often one of the fruits chosen to bless for the second day of Rosh Hashanah. It is also referenced as having 613 seeds comparing it to the number of mitzvot in the Torah. Delicious as it is, the rimmon, (Hebrew for pomegranate) is symbolically a fruit for righteousness and fruitfulness. Enjoy in good health.

Ideas Using Your ‘Simanim’ BY DENISE PHILLIPS Simanim which literally means signs or indicators are incorporated into the pre-Rosh Hashanah family meal in the form of a seder. It is now quite popular - years ago it was only followed by the very orthodox and primarily with the Sephardim community. Using fish, fruits, and vegetables good omens for the forthcoming New Year are wished for. The main ten simanim are apples and honey, dates, gourds, pomegranates, fish, fish head, leeks, black-eyed beans, beetroot, and carrots. This is called a seder ‘yehi ratzon’, ‘may it be God’s will’ because we ask God to guide us and provide us with bounty, strength, and peace for the year ahead. Many of the foods are blessed with puns on their Hebrew names that turn into hopes that our enemies will be destroyed. 1) Apples and Honey; I have made apple and honey challah, apple and honey cake, chicken stew with dried apple rings and sweetened with honey. Salads, biscuits, baked apples, cupcakes and muffins are some tasty combinations that the family would enjoy.
2) Dates; the word for end in Hebrew ‘tam’ sounds like tamar, the Hebrew word for date meaning to be consumed and finished. Stuffed dates can be passed around. Date cous cous salads, date honey cake, dried dates with roast lamb is delicious or fresh date salads work well. 3) Gourds; from a corruption of the word Krah, the Hebrew word for gourd means to rip up and proclaim. They have a tough skin – this is symbolically referred to as how God takes care of us. Pumpkins, butternut squash roasted into wedges with cinnamon and honey, salads, stuffed squash with quinoa, bulghur wheat or rice is a tasty vegetarian dish, soups and puree are also a great family favourite. 4) Pomegranates; the number of (supposed) 613 seeds inside each fruit symbolically represent the number of mitzvot in the Torah. They serve as symbols of righteousness, fruitfulness and fertility. A delicious positive omen are a great addition to chicken stews, salad, tabblouleh, cakes, rice dishes and or even on
your morning porridge. 5) Fish; it is symbolically perceived as a fertility omen - we should be as fruitful as the number of fish in the sea. Also since fish are underwater the evil eye can not penetrate the depths; we wish to be free of any negative times. Salmon, smoked salmon make delicious salads, pates, bakes, tacos, fish spaghetti dishes are just a taster of fish versality. 6) Fish Head; symbolically we want to be the head and not the tail, referring to the omen of leadership -lead from the front with vision, purpose and by example. Fish heads are not necessarily the most ‘eye catching’ ingredient on the table but this has a deep meaning. 7) Leeks; in the blessing we ask for protection against our enemies that they be ‘cut off’ from us in the year ahead. The year of Covid 19 has been the enemy for many. Enjoy leeks as a soup, sautéed as the base for fish, roasted with potatoes, bakes and gratins or with eggs in a frittata. 8) Black eyed beans; or fenugreek is
reminiscent of the word yirbu to increase. These foods symbolize the hope for a fruitful year filled with merit. Vegetable stews, purees, salsa and salads are a good way to use them. 9) Beetroot; known as ‘silka’ related to the word ‘siluk’, meaning removal. Beetroot is a real super food and I love it in salads, soups, latkes, roasted and added to humus, risotto and with potato salad. 10) Carrots; eating them at Rosh Hashanah is meant to express our desire that God will nullify any negative decrees against us. The Yiddish word for carrots and more (‘merren’) are similar – we ask for a prosperous year. Also, when you cut carrots into rounds they look like coins! Carrots in cakes, baby carrots roasted whole with herbs, soups or cooked with rice into a pilaf are per fect at this time of year. Enjoy eating with meaning and purpose. May your Rosh Hashanah blessings be overflowing. L’shana Tova Denise
Date Honey cake
Honey cake is traditionally served at Rosh Hashanah as it is naturally sweet and a lucky omen for a sweet New Year. This recipe uses date honey (silan), which is a vegan thick brown fruity syrup as well as dried dates. Dates are also a great choice for this time of year as it is symbolically believed that eating them will help to end our troubles during the year ahead. And here’s another fun fact– Biblical scholars believe that the honey repeatedly mentioned in the Torah came from dates (and other fruits), not bees. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time 1 hour Makes: 8-10 Ingredients 175g whole destoned dates – roughly chopped 140g plain or spelt flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 tsp salt Pinch nutmeg 250ml vegetable oil 100g brown sugar 75ml date honey (silan) 3 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 100g chopped walnuts Method 1. Preheat oven to 170C. 2. Line a 1k loaf tin with baking parchment paper. 3. Place dates into a bowl and cover them with very hot water. Let the dates soak while you prepare the cake batter. 4. In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, brown sugar, honey, eggs, and vanilla.
5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir till a thick batter forms. 6. Drain water from the dates. 7. Fold the walnuts and date chunks into the batter. 8. Pour batter into loaf tin. 9. Place loaf tin into preheated oven. 10. Bake cake for about 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Remove from oven and set on a wire rack to cool.

Germany restores 1880-era shul that was almost destroyed on Kristallnacht When Kibbutz Lavi’s furniture company agreed to take on restoration work on a synagogue in Germany, what they didn’t know was that their own kibbutz members are direct descendants of the synagogue’s Rav. Viewing the breathtaking grandeur of the magnificently restored Carlebach Synagogue in Lubeck, Germany, brings to mind the Navi’s consolation, where Am Yisrael is reassured that the day will come when not only will they be restored to their land, but their shuls and batei medrash will likewise be restored. Sadly, neither the shul’s rav nor any other of the original community members are alive today to revel in the synagogue’s reinstated glory; however, in an interesting twist, several of the rav’s grandchildren are the children of founding members of Kibbutz Lavi, whose furniture factory designed and built the synagogue’s aron kodesh, bimah, and other klei kodesh. Rabbi David Alexander Winter, rav of the Carlebach Synagogue, fled Lubeck in 1938 together with most of his community. Several months later, on Kristallnacht, when many of Germany’s synagogues were torched and burned to the ground, the Lubeck synagogue was damaged and looted, but, fortuantely, not destroyed — the building had recently been sold to the municipality, and the contract, signed by the rav, was inside the synagogue, in plain view. For Rav Winter’s grandchildren, seeing the restoration of their grandfather’s synagogue is especially moving. “It’s a feeling of coming full circle,” said Mrs. Yehudit Menachem, who visited Lubeck last year seeking to learn more about her family history. Dr. Ariel Romem, a pediatrician and one of the grandsons, remarked that the restoration of the shul is symbolic of the re-blossoming of the Winter family, and of the Jewish people as a whole. “They may have ruined the shul, but they never succeeded in breaking us,” he said. In the seven decades since the Holocaust, the once-stately synagogue, established in 1880, has suffered looting, a firebombing, squatters, and general neglect. German architect Thomas Schröder-Berkentien began working on restoration already in 2010, but the project was stuck due to a lack of funding. In 2016, the German government dedicated a sizable sum, with other funding arriving from the Schleswig-Holstein state, the Lubeckbased Possehl Foundation and UNESCO, which had declared the Old City of Lubeck a world heritage site. The total cost of the
Carlebach Synagogue, before and after restoration
project amounted to almost $10 million. Schröder-Berkentien was intent on finding the best craftsmen for the synagogue furniture, and also felt that it was only right that the furniture should come from Israel. He found the Lavi furniture factory online and after several inquiries and a visit to the carpentry workshop along with his team, was assured that they had the necessary experience and expertise to perform the research and produce items of quality and beauty. Indeed, in its 60 years of operation, Lavi’s furniture factory has designed and produced interiors for synagogues in over 6,000 Jewish communities around the world, including for new and restored synagogues in Germany. Motti Namdar, the factory’s chief planner, describes the challenge, and ultimate satisfaction, of creating replicas of the original items. “We only had three prewar,
black-and-white photos to go by,” he explained. “The photos showed only one angle and even that was not very clear. It was difficult to make out a lot of the detailing or which metals were used, especially for the aron kodesh, which you can see from the photos is very unusual.” Ultimately, much of Namdar’s work had to be done by deduction and a knowledge of the history of the period. “I traveled to Lubeck to see the synagogue and examine the parts that had not been damaged. Part of the ladies’ gallery was intact. The architect had hired restoration experts who carefully removed the layers of paint from the walls, exposing the original murals. The synagogue as a whole had been built in the Moorish style, and I proceeded in that direction.” In one of the photos, it’s possible to make out the pointed roof-like structure at
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
the top of the aron kodesh, which Namdar designed to include 1,500 “scales,” all coated in pure gold. Under Namdar’s direction, the Lavi factory completed all the articles by the deadline. “The hardest part wasn’t the tight schedule, but rather, building everything such that it could be taken apart, packed and shipped, and then reassembled so that everything fit perfectly.” But while it was clear to the craftsmen at Lavi that they wanted to produce replicas that were as authentic as possible, the project’s architect, Schröder-Berkentien, was intent that the structure itself, which had been restored as a national monument, should serve as a testament, and in his words, “like a wound,” serving as a painful reminder of the events of 1939. This was the reasoning behind his decision not to redo the shul’s original ornate façade, which together with the cupola and other elements, had been destroyed on Kristallnacht. “The plain red brick tells the story of what happened,” he said. “A rebuilt façade would ignore that part of history, failing to show the suffering of the era. This is what makes it such a unique monument among other German synagogues.” When news of the coronavirus pandemic first broke in January, the factory began working overtime so that everything would be ready for the gala re-inauguration, which was to have been attended by high-ranking German officials, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, members of the restoration committee and local community figures, as well as Rav Winter’s grandchildren from Kibbutz Lavi. However, when it was finally time for the actual assembly and installation of the furniture, the world was already in COVID-19 lockdown. As soon as it was possible, Lavi Furniture Industries sent their own experts from England to complete the work. Now, the synagogue stands in all its resplendent glory; but the ceremony, meanwhile, has been postponed indefinitely. The important thing is that the synagogue is open and operating, serving as a spiritual hub for Lubeck’s 700-strong community. “This synagogue is not only a place of prayer, but a symbol of the revival of Jewish life in Lubeck, throughout Germany and around the world,” said the current rav of Lubeck, Rabbi Nathan Grinberg.

38 SUPPLEMENT BY DAVID SAFFER Ashkenazi-based shul services can be enhanced by a sing-along prayer book that is proving a hit domestically and across the Jewish world. “We Sing We Stay Together: Shabbat Morning Service” is the brainchild of Londoner Richard Collis who for over 20 years wanted to produce an educational resource to aid Shabbat morning service. Payers appear ‘word for word’ as in an Artscroll Ashkenaz siddur. The easy to read prayer songbook includes a transliteration into English with a service explanation. It is available in Russian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese (BRA) and Chinese at online bookstores. A double CD is also available to purchase while 64four tunes can be downloaded free from streaming services and can be enjoyed on YouTube. Material in the songbook has been well received. “It faithfully follows the siddur text from Nishmat col Chai to the Adon Olam,” explained Richard. “The music and singing emphasises clarity, melody and Israeli pronunciation makes it easy to understand.” He added, “The idea was not to have special effects, or try be the next Frank Sinatra, it was designed as a learning tool for anybody. No prior knowledge is required.” Richard attended a local United Synagogue in north-west London in the 1970s. Struggling to participate in a Shabbat service, like many friends, he did not attend synagogue. After travelling around the Far East as a teenager, Richard learnt to speak Hebrew but he wanted more when it came to the Shabbat service. Rabbi Steve Ginsberg Beirav Carlebach Synagogue in Safed and Rabbi Menachem Salaman of Stamford Hill inspired the entrepreneur. “Rabbi Ginsberg opened up a treasure trove of Carlebachian melodies from which to sample,” noted Richard. “We sat in his synagogue in 2013 and experimented by applying melodies to different prayers. I was looking for melodies that were pleasant on the ear, in keeping with the meaning of the prayer, and could be further developed. “Rabbi Menachem has been a close friend of over 25 years with whom I spent countless hours studying and exploring. Each prayer in the song book is preceded with a very short ‘take-away’ descriptive inspired by Rabbi Menachem.” Recording melodies with professional musician and sound engineer Yossi Yoffe, a two-hour double-album became a reality. “It took 12 months after returning from Israel, singing every night in my kitchen into my laptop, to create my Acapella blueprint of all the tracks,” he recalled. “This is what I took to Yossi in May 2014. I told him, I have a project to put all these prayers to music. We shared a six-year journey of improving and applying the final musical accompaniment, harmonisations and pronunciations before releasing the 64 tracks.” Most songs are traditional or Carlebach

melodies, some are adapted close to original tunes. Richard is pleased with the finished material of books and CD’s. “The overwhelming majority of diaspora Jews, like me, grew up not knowing anything,” he said. “I needed a prayer book with phonetics clearly written in association with an audio musical rendition, so it could be easily followed and learned. I made sure the translation was modern English, that someone like me could relate
to and positioned, so it was easy on the eye. The phonetic songbook is a siddur in its own right because it explains the service as well. “The idea is simple. No prior knowledge is required, if you have this book in your hands you can follow and understand a service and be part of it.” He added, “This is not a seasonal project. More and more people are learning the prayers to authentically Jewish sourced melodies because they can,

because it is so easy. Once you have learnt a tune to the words of a prayer you will never forget it. “It takes time to get the message out but it can only grow and it is growing.” Material is available at the Israeli Ministry of Diaspora website. In Uganda, communities have sent Richard videos of their efforts about being able to add melodies to a Shabbat morning service. “It is out of this world and very encouraging people are downloading sheet music,” he noted. “A number of Jewish music teachers have also realised they can teach music with children learning the prayers and Hebrew at the same time.” As for a favourite track, Richard loves them all. “We are talking about 64 prayers written by our greatest ever scholars,” he explained. “They are so beautiful that not to sing them with understanding from the heart on Shabbat is just so sad. Some of the prayers are happy, some adoring, some beseeching, some sad, some show vulnerability, many about love, kinship, kindness and respect for goodness. The Shabbat prayers encapsulate the humanity of Judaism and our total devotion, gratitude and love for Hashem. “Each is a special unique blessing and each is so beautiful.” He added, “This project is about outreach,” he said. “I wanted to give my childhood friends and Jews like me an easy way to connect and benefit from an amazingly beautiful and rich heritage. “This is about no to exclusion and yes to participation. It is about love of Israel and Jewish continuity.” Details: www.wesingwestaytogether.com

The World of Commerce in a World of Covid BY AVI KRAVITZ Covid-19 brought interruption to all businesses and dealt a huge blow to many. Some, however, saw more profit than usual – far more, in fact. Here is the story of some well-known industries and how they fared during the pandemic. At 300 million daily meeting participants in April up from 10 million daily in December 2019, there’s no question that Zoom Video Communications is the corporate winner of Covid-19. Share prices in Zoom were $78 this time last year, and on 8th September 2020 stood at $350.88, an almost 350% increase. In the medical industry, Phillips were the leaders in ventilator manufacturing. However, the US Department of Health abruptly cancelled an order of almost 43,000 ventilators, and the Dutch firm was subsequently left with an estimated excess of 30,000. Supermarket giants such as Tesco saw a jump of 30% in sales during the “stockpiling” weeks, but nevertheless estimated that extra costs of operation during the pandemic could range between £650 £925 million. Amazon enjoyed somewhere around a

$5 billion profit in the three months from March to August 2020, as online shopping went from a convenience to a necessity for many, leading its revenue in the second quarterof 2020 to jump to $88.9 billion. Also impressive was the 34% increase in its workforce – up to a total of 876,000. Delivery companies likewise saw massive profits with 3000 more restaurants signing up to Deliveroo at the beginning of March. British-Swedish Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca PLC had secured a $1.2 billion grant from the Trump administration but at the current time, the trials for developing a vaccine for Covid-19 have been placed on hold. Finally, PPE. With Rishi Sunak’s surprising revelation in early July that £15 billion had been spent by the UK Government on PPE, there is no question that manufacturers both in the UK and abroad have seen an unprecedented surge in demand for supplies. With half the world output of face masks being manufactured in China (at least as of 2019) the country enjoyed a demand of over 70,000 new companies registering to make or trade the masks in the first half of 2020, and by March 2020, China had increased its production capacity to 100 million masks a day.

Young and Mighty sees launch of Mighty Cards Young & Mighty, a new social enterprise, has launched its latest product, Mighty Cards. Mighty Cards are a highly engaging and effective tool to promote positive mental health in children aged 4 – 11 years. Mighty Cards are cards containing activities that help to invite emotions like happiness, joy and calmness into children’s lives. Already used by hundreds of families, Mighty Cards were created by Child Psychologist, Dr. Gail Sinitsky during Lockdown, to encourage and enable children to express their feelings and build resilience. Families have found that Mighty Cards are an excellent and easy way to help develop a child’s emotional literacy. Mighty Cards offer children 36 different breathing, creative and movement strategies to help with boosting children’s capacity to deal with tricky feelings, releasing tension and stress, promote positive emotions, build self-esteem and encourage self-compassion. In addition to the positive impact that Mighty Cards have already had, and driven by a desire to play a part in making the world a kinder and happier place, Young
& Mighty will re-invest 50% of profits into delivering innovative, accessible and meaningful kindness projects to promote
the mental health of children who are disadvantaged, vulnerable or living with additional needs.
For more information about Mighty Cards, including FAQs and advice on how the cards are best used, visit www.youngandmighty.com. Dr. Gail Sinitsky, Founder of Young & Mighty, says: “I am delighted to launch Mighty Cards, which have already helped so many families with young children in need of emotional support. The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on all of us - and it’s vital that we provide opportunities for children to process their feelings and what is going on around them.” Sue Atkins, Disney, BBC, ITV “This Morning” parenting expert and author, has said: “Mighty Cards are absolutely beautiful, brilliant and SO helpful. They support children and help them to manage and understand their BIG emotions, which is so important during this time of coping in a pandemic. I love the breathing, moving, visualising and creative activities that empower children to feel calm, centred, strong and joyful.”
Emotional eating… or is it? BY DINA SPIELMAN
You may have found the past 6 months challenging, stressful or downright hard! You may find yourself turning to food, or as its commonly called, ‘emotionally eating’. Actually, it’s ok to use food as a way to cope. The problem starts when food is the ONLY tool you have. In fact, food IS an emotional experience. Think about enjoying some chocolate after a long day at work, sharing a romantic dinner, dipping apple into honey on Rosh Hashanah or celebrating with cake at a party.
So here’s what to if you find yourself snacking and you’re not sure why. First ask yourself, am I actually just hungry? If yes, eat! Next, ask yourself what am I feeling? Tired? Anxious? Bored? And what do I need? You can create a self care toolbox filled with ideas of what you may really need, rather than food, such as a hug, chat with a friend, a nap or to plan an early night. Bit if you’re not able to figure out your feelings right now, but you know food is not the real thing you need, you may just need some distraction. This can involve
anything like taking a walk or watching your favourite movie. However, if you’re not hungry, you’ve enjoyed a stroll in the fresh air, organised the everything draw and even painted your nails, but you still feel a pull towards the snack, I have one more question for you. Is this a food that you don’t ordinarily allow yourself to eat? Is it the kind of food that you tell yourself; “I shouldn’t eat this,” or “I don’t need this”? If you found yourself snacking on cucumber slices, would you say the same thing? Or would you allow yourself this food saying “I can have some anytime.”? That’s because you allow yourself to eat vegetables so they are not special. So there’s the key - you need to give yourself permission to eat this food. When we try to micromanage what we eat, our body becomes hyper conscious around food. For example, if I tell you “do not think of a white elephant. You can think of anything else just not a white elephant”. I bet you’re thinking of a white elephant, aren’t you? This is the way our brains work! For example give a two year old a box of brand new toys and tell him he just cant play with the tissue. Guess which toy he chooses? That right, the l tissue. I know it’s frustrating, you’ve been trying
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
to avoid this food and be ‘good’. But we just cant fool our bodies. Restriction can lead to eating in the absence of hunger as Glenys Oysten calls it. So when you don’t know why you’re still reaching for the snacks, it could be that this is the only opportunity your body has, to get these kinds of foods. So what you can do is: listen to what your body is asking for. YOUR BODY IS LEADING YOU TO IT ANYWAY! Here’s a quick summary to understand what is usually lumped under ‘emotionally eating’: 1) Are you hungry? Eat! 2) Are you actually emotionally eating? It’s ok! Food is a coping mechanism and if this is how you can cope right now then great you have found a way to cope! 3) Are you snacking guiltily on foods that you don’t usually allow yourself to eat? Give yourself permission to eat them! Anger management BY ARYEH SAMPSON If you’ve ever exploded with anger and regretted it shortly afterwards, or felt yourself simmering with resentment for days, you’ll know how harmful these feelings can be. Anger can wreak havoc on relationships and have a very destructive effect on your life. Recent medical research has shown it to be linked to an increased likelihood of heart disease, cancer and the weakening of the immune system. Fortunately there are many effective approaches that can be used to reduce anger. I would like to share a four step approach for anger management.
THE FIRST STEP IS TO LEARN HOW TO STAY IN CONTROL AND CALM DOWN IN ANGER-PROVOKING SITUATIONS.
Modern psychotherapy places great emphasis on techniques that help to reduce and release the frustration associated with anger. Breathing techniques can be a very effective method as it calms the psyche and reduces stress levels. Writing down your feelings in the form of a letter which will never be sent, or exercising can also be very helpful.
THE SECOND IS TO CONTEMPLATE THE
SITUATION.
In the heat of the moment we often become irrational, blowing things out of proportion. Once we feel calmer, we can look at the anger provoking situation more objectively. By changing the way we think about the situation, we can change our emotional reaction. It can be valuable to ask ourselves if there are other, less hostile ways of viewing the situation and to see it from the other person’s perspective”. We can also become more aware of our own motivations. We may become angry with a certain person but really be angry with someone else. For example, a person who’s angry with their boss but is afraid to express it may come home and flare up at their spouse ,as it’s easier to redirect the anger than face the real problem head on.
THE THIRD - CHANGING OURSELVES
We have more control over ourselves and our responses than those of others. We therefore need to consider if there’s anything we can do to improve the situation or to prevent it from reoccurring. This may be simple lifestyle changes, such as getting more sleep, eating better or being more organised. On a deeper level, anger may be provoked when our feelings of vulnerability are triggered. We can
SUPPLEMENT 41
improve these situations by taking responsibility to deal with our insecurities and areas of sensitivity.
THE FOURTH - COMMUNICATION
When a person feels angry, two responses are common: fight, (explode outwardly) or flight (retreat inwardly.) Learning to communicate your feelings in an open, non-confrontational way is important at these times. There’s a valuable approach used in conflict resolution called ‘active listening’. Two people in conflict are encouraged to make statements that begin with “I”, focusing on what they feel rather than making accusing statements that begin with “You”. For example, “I felt bad when this happened,” instead of “you never do the right thing.” The other person paraphrases the contents of the statement before replying, which enables the speaker to feel understood and validated. In this way a calm environment is created where both sides can work to resolve their differences without anger flaring up.

The thinking behind Netanyahu and the Gulf States
BY JAMES MARLOW One Thursday afternoon back in August (13 Aug, 2020) Binyamin Netanyahu, stood up in the middle of a cabinet meeting and walked out of the room. When he was asked, “Where are you going,” the Prime Minister replied, “You will find out later.” What transpired was a conference call between US President Donald Trump, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed of Abu Dhabi and when Netanyahu joined the conversation, a declaration of the first historic peace agreement between Israel and an Arab country in 26 years was
announced. Netanyahu later told the public, “This agreement is different from its predecessors because it is based on two principles, Peace for Peace and Peace through Strength”. He reminded the people that under this doctrine, Israel is not required to withdraw from any territory and therefore can focus solely on trade, investment, health, tourism, agriculture, environmental protection and many other areas including defence and security cooperation. This peace was not achieved because Israel weakened itself by withdrawing to the 1967 lines. It was achieved because Israel under the leadership of Netanyahu cultivated a strong free economy, along with huge military and technological strength. In doing so, Israel has achieved unprecedented international influence and Bibi has rightly taken credit for developing this strategy for the past 11 years. Netanyahu’s doctrine on how to make Israel a powerful force, while pursuing real peace was always about placing Israel in a position where almost every country would need the Jewish State.
For years, Bibi has worked hard on developing relationships with the four major world nuclear powers today, namely Russia, China, India and of course the United States. He is the only world leader who can pick up the telephone and speak directly to anyone of these leaders because of the strong relationship Netanyahu has with each one, and they highly respect him. Netanyahu was also able to successfully undermine the European Union’s attempt of a single foreign policy to weaken Israel, by creating special individual relationships with EU countries such as Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Greece and Cyprus. This divided EU opinion on Israel which in turn weakened the Palestinian Authority’s position in the world. This was essential otherwise the Palestinians would have a veto over the achievement of peace between Israel and Arab countries. The PA insisted that no Arab state could sign an agreement with the Jewish State, until their own demands had been met. But Netanyahu predicted at the UN General Assembly in 2013 that peace would come to the region, only once Arab
states made peace with Israel - then the Palestinians would make peace with the Jewish State. As a result of these “games” Netanyahu played for years, individual countries including moderate Arab states, have seen that Israel could become a strong ally, and that the real threat to the stability of the region is the Islamic Republic of Iran. In fact it was Netanyahu who saw the 1300 year old conflict between Sunni and Shia Muslims resurface, after the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. He could see that Arab Sunni states were genuinely fearful of Iranian expansion into Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen and Netanyahu took advantage of the situation by highlighting the dangers of Iran’s aggression, and its efforts to attain nuclear weapons. In response Arabs states began to question the Palestinian issue and whether it was more of a burden to them, rather than their own interests. Gulf States such as UAE, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia were happy to openly have contact and cooperate with Israel, and in some cases, pictures of Israeli leaders with their Arab

over the years, and has known Netanyahu since he was appointed Ambassador to the United Nations in 1984, stated, “While most politicians are busy playing checkers, Netanyahu has always been playing three dimensional chess.” Today Israel is no longer the third world country it once was. Instead it is a thriving stable world power with huge influence over world affairs, and all this has occurred in the last 11 years under the leadership of Binyamin Netanyahu. Along with a very strong President Donald Trump who understands world affairs and the international “game,” Netanyahu believes many dictatorships will fall in line with the United States and this is what has brought about the deal between UAE and Israel. Danny Seaman says, Saudi Arabia also recognises that it’s smart to have ties with Israel, not just because of an Israel-Sunni / Muslim alliance against Shia Iran, but because of Saudi oil. “It costs a huge amount of money for Saudi Arabia to ship its oil through the Suez Canal. “If it had a trade agreement with Israel, Saudi could set up a railway line and export its oil to Europe through the ports of Haifa and Ashdod,” said Seaman. Of course, Israel recognises the benefits on an economic level and on an international standing, if Arab states make peace with the Jewish State. But the UAE are using Israel for its own benefit, because it is smart business. It also paves the way for the Emirates to purchase stealth F35 fighter jets from US, something they have

been trying to do for 6 years. To understand Netanyahu, you have to understand his goal has always been to isolate Iran. This has been done at the expense of not retaliating too hard against the Islamists in Gaza or applying sovereignty over parts of Judea and Samaria – that will come. “In any case, Israel is still in full control of Judea, Samaria and all the Jewish communities, says Danny Seaman, “except for the autonomous cities given to the Palestinian Authority,” he added. But for now, the focus has to be on world affairs and undermining the threat that Iran poses by destroying Iranian bases in Syria and ammunition transfers from Lebanon. In addition, Israel is the “Start-Up Nation” and second only to the United States in this field. Research and Development is Israel’s speciality and Israel has become the R & D centre of the United States, both in high-tech and militarily, and this gives Israel a huge advantage. The stable Arab world understands this and would benefit hugely by investing in Israel. The Arab Gulf States certainly have the money. And especially at a time when China is investing in Iran, it would make sense if moderate Arab states with strong economies and thriving abilities would invest in a stable Israel. The failing states like Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, who all are fighting civil wars, are the same states that wish to destroy Israel. Henry Kissinger said the more agreements and economic ties you have with other nations, the less likely those countries will want to go to war with you. This is what has happened with Egypt and Jordan and will likely happen with the Emirates and other Gulf States. Bar-Ilan University lecturer and expert on Middle East Affairs and Arabic culture, Dr Mordechai Kedar, told Avi Abelow on a zoom interview, “When Arab countries accept Israel is invincible, they will accept us and make peace with us.” There is still talk that Bahrain and Oman will also sign an agreement with Israel. But in any case an official Washington signing ceremony between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Binyamin Netanyahu on the White House lawn, with Donald Trump looking on, will likely take place before the American election. Dr Kedar, believes the signing ceremony will happen one week before the November 3rd election, in order to convince supporters of Israel to vote for Donald Trump. “Instead of the six separate hands of Trump, Netanyahu and bin Zayed shaking, you may instead have ten hands, which will include the leaders of Bahrain and Oman.” But that’s highly unlikely at this stage. All the Gulf States are believed to want Donald Trump to remain in the White House for another 4 years, because they fear a reverse of American policy on Iran under the Democrats. However one thing is for sure, in these Covid days, we are unlikely to witness any traditional hand shaking between the parties on the White House lawn.

counterparts were published. Another advantage Israel has is the discovery of more than 30 trillion cubic feet of gas off the country’s coast, making it one of the largest natural gas reservoirs in the world. Israel has now begun to export gas to Egypt and Jordan. But Netanyahu wasted no time in creating special relationships with Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Eastern Europe countries and even Russia, all of whom need this special Israeli resource, despite an outcry from some in Israel to make the natural gas available for Israelis. Netanyahu could see through his policy of manoeuvring and posturing that the world would come to Israel because of what it could offer them. ASK THE RABBI
Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com HOW YOU CAN MAKE ROSH HASHANAH AT HOME A MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE Dear Rabbi I am what they call a three time a year Jew. That said, the few times that I do attend I thoroughly enjoy the experience. The High Holidays carry me through the year. This year I am unable to go to Synagogue. I am in the “vulnerable” bracket because of an underlying health condition and will be spending Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kipper at home. I suggested my wife should go, but as there is no space in the Synagogue for children and they have to stay home she has chosen to remain home with the rest of us. At this point I am, for lack of a better description, sad. While I have no choice, I won’t get my usual “fix.” Is there anything you can advise that could somehow make our overall “home experience” more meaningful. I think any insight would be of benefit to many readers who I suspect are in a similar situation. While writing may I take this opportunity to thank you for your weekly inspiration and wish you a Shana Tova and all things good in the coming year. Robbie be a little more intimate with G-d. (2) Be Your Own Chazan: Select various prayers that speak to you or that you’ve enjoyed over the years. Spend time understanding them, close your eyes and contemplate on the significance of the words and their relevance in your life. Then recite them slow and deliberately. Sing the tunes you’re familiar with. As Rosh Hashanah falls on a weekend and everyone will be at home, create some spiritual space in which you pray together as a family, have a discussion, pick select paragraphs from the Machzor, singing some of the traditional songs etc. It could all be a most memorable experience. Above all else remember that G-d hears prayer wherever we are and if we must stay home, that’s exactly where He wants to hear us. (3) Become a Gourmet Chef: There are a number of sweet delicacies one should enjoy on Rosh Hashanah as an omen for a sweet year. Round raisin challah; sweet carrots; apple dipped in honey. And other symbolic foods like pomegranates (because of the multitude of seeds representing abundance), the head of a fish (representing being ahead in the coming year), are also significant. Make mealtime festive and meaningful. (4) Connect with Others: Remember we are not in this alone. There are many others that will be confined somewhat this year. Picking up a phone before the New Year
and wishing them a Shana Tova will mean the world to them and will uplift yourself in the process. Though socially distant we can be spiritually together. Showing some extra love to another will ensure that in the same way, G-d will show us a lot of love as well. And we can all really use it at this time. (5) Water under the Bridge: Even if one cannot make it to Shul, there is one beautiful ritual that can be fulfilled. There is an ancient custom of walking to a flowing body of water and reciting the special “Tashlich” prayer. This in keeping with the verse, “and you shall throw (tashlich in Hebrew) their sins into the depths of the sea.” It is a short prayer found in every machzor and is as certainly covid compliant. N.B. This year the custom is practiced on the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah (Sunday). (6) Stay Inspired: There is so much material available online that
May you together with all readers merit a truly happy, healthy, sweet and prosperous New Year ahead filled with life, love and laughter.

Pirkei Avot In this week’s mishnah, we meet another two characters, Yehudah ben Tabai and Shimon ben Shetach. Yehudah ben Tabai has the lead role this week, and he carries on the recent them of judges. ‘When serving as a judge, do not act like a lawyer, and when the litigants stand before you, consider them both as guilty. But when they have both been dismissed from you, consider them both as innocent, if they have both accepted the judgement.’ The theme of righteous judges is an extremely important topic in Judaism. Sadly there are corrupt Dayanim out there, even if they look the part. Dayanim must be very careful to judge properly, and this mishnah echoes the values taught a few weeks ago in Parshat Shoftim. The Talmud in Shabbat tells us that Moshiach will never come whist there are corrupt Dayanim around. Some are

(7) Stay Happy: The current circumstances might get you down. No shul, no socialising, no additional family. The ancient Sages impress upon us that happiness is the ultimate receptacle for blessings. It may be more challenging this Rosh Hashanah but think of all the reasons you have to be happy, focus on the obvious blessings in your life and remember, when you smile down below G-d will smile up above.
Mishna 8 involved in bribery, blackmail and all sorts. Some should be rotting in prison right now. Hashem deals harshly with judges who are corrupt, as unfair judges leads to a complete and utter breakdown in moral society. If you look around the world today at all the corruption out there, it is allowed to flourish because sadly many judges, even in this first world country are corrupt. There is a fascinating story which I heard from Reb Yechiel Emanuel in Manchester a few weeks ago which illustrates the importance of judging fairly. A man once went to a famous Rabbi (possibly the Baal Shem Tov), and asked him how gilgulim (reincarnation) worked. He was told to go to a certain clearing in a forest and hide up a tree from dawn until dusk. He was told under no circumstances could he allow himself to be seen. The man followed his Rebbe’s advice and waited with bated breath up a tree.
Soon after, a man came to the clearing and sat down by the water to refresh himself. Placing a suitcase down beside him, he fell fast asleep. As the man up the tree watched, an hour or so later, he awoke, jumped up with a start, looked at his watch and ran off, leaving his suitcase behind. Soon after another man came to have a drink. Upon seeing the suitcase, he opened it and saw thousands of gold coins inside! Looking around to see if anyone was around, he took the suitcase and ran off. Shortly after, a pauper arrived and sat down to have a drink, before also falling asleep. As the man in the tree watched with bated breath, the first man who had left the suitcase returned and woke the man up, demanding he return his suitcase. The beg-

gar denied any knowledge of it and so the man beat him up. After giving him a good beating he realised he really didn’t know about the case so he left him battered and bruised and went off angrily. After the beggar trundled off, and dusk had fallen, the man made his way down from the tree and back to his Rebbe, relating curiously what he had seen. The Rebbe told him that in a previous life, a Judge had given the wrong financial ruling in a certain case, causing someone to miss out on a huge sum that was rightfully his. The man who lost the case was the man from the previous life who had won the case unfairly. The man who found the money had lost the court case in the previous life. And the poor man who got beaten up was the Judge. Shanah Tova.

Torah from Israel G-d’s Part in Teshuva BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN Teshuva is G-d’s ultimate gift to all of humanity. The ability to invert our past, transmute our personality and rehabilitate our broken relationship with G-d is His exquisite gift to Man the pinnacle of His creation. Religiously sensitive people crave this process and greatly anticipate the “inflamed and fiery” days toward the end of summer. Parshat Nizavim describes teshuva instigated by national distress; a wave of suffering triggers a moral and religious response and we rise to the opportunity of teshuva. Summarizing an effective teshuva, the Torah describes G-d “removing the covering” (literally the foreskin) surrounding our hearts. Evidently, teshuva entails a dual gift from G-d: He “enchants” the possibility of teshuva even to undeserving sinners. He also participates in the actual process of teshuva along with us. He grants us pardon but also is helps us seek it. Conventionally, teshuva is viewed as an exclusively human process. As the greatest and boldest implementation of human liberty, it is fundamentally a human moment in which G-d, by design, has no “say”. We seek G-d but we must seek him freely and through our own insight, inspiration and courage. Evidently as autonomously human as teshuva is, G-d assists us even as seek Him and His enchanting offer. How does G-d participate in the process of teshuva? Firstly, G-d, knowing that we are frail and moral cowards, accepts our imperfect teshuva. Teshuva is not binary - all or nothing. There are various levels and versions of teshuva, peaking at the supreme or ultimate teshuva or “teshuva gemura”a level which feels elusive for most of us. Often, we confess our sins with partial sincerity, lacking full and deep-seated conviction for change. Yet, despite our shallowness, the very act of facing our flaws and articulating them, demonstrates a degree of remorse which G-d accepts, though imperfect. Even sincere teshuva is haunted by the inevitable failure of our most sincere promises. Experience demonstrates that we are likely to arrive to the very same situation next year. As life passes, we try to plug the never-ending leaks in our sinking ship and we find ourselves repeating teshuva for the sins we had forsworn a year earlier. Despite this inevitability and despite His knowing that we will ultimately fall short, G-d accepts us and our current sincerity. If we generate sincere conviction and desire for change, G-d
accepts out teshuva based on our current determination and does not reject us based on our ultimate failure. I annually ask myself the following question: if there were a magical pill that would “lock in” my current teshuva dreams and guarantee their implementation would I take that pill? Answering “yes” to this question reassures me of my deep desire for change and hopefully G-d acknowledges my sincerity and accepts my teshuva. G-d doesn’t only accept our flawed teshuva, He also pries open our locked hearts. The pasuk in Nizavim describes him removing the covering of our hearts. Sometimes these “heart shields” prevent intake and inhibit important messages from entering our hearts. Many understand the mitzvah to remove our heart coverings as a commandment to listen to rebuke. Reproach and moral censure are difficult to handle as we prefer affirmation of who we are rather than whistle-blowers who call us to higher ground. The teshuva journey can only begin when we decide to listen- to events, to prophets, to people who challenge us, or to our own restless conscience. We ask G-d to help us open our hearts so that religious challenges can enter and stir us to change. Conversely, the insulation around our hearts prevent emotion from flowing outward or being voiced. As my Rebbe Rav Lichtenstein wrote “… where do we stand in relation to crying? Our gut instinct is that crying is for the ignorant and the superstitious; but we are sophisticated and intellectual, and therefore decorous and restrained. Ribbono shel Olam! Amidst all this decorum and restraint, can’t we, at least at Ne’ila, shed some genuine tears?... if not to be totally dissolved in tears, at least to open somewhat that “terrible dam” which inhibits …our giving vent to our sense of shame and guilt..” We ask G-d to help us remove this “terrible dam” and allow our deepest and most vulnerable, but authentic emotions to flood our tefillot. Interestingly, G-d doesn’t only assist us in distilling a superior davening- he also davens right alongside us. The gemara in Rosh Hashanah portrays G-d donning a tallit and leading a tefilla of mercy, while Moshe listens and learns how to properly daven. Evidently, G-d Himself davens on our behalf and on behalf of His relationship with His people. I recall my Rebbe HaRav Yehuda Amital describing our desperation to open the gates of prayer during the closing crushing moments of nei’lah. This mirrors G-d’s desperate attempts to force open the gates of our
10 SEPTEMBER 2020
Despite this inevitability and despite His knowing that we will ultimately fall short, G-d accepts us and our current sincerity hearts and enter the precinct which he doesn’t possess the keys to. Just as we seek G-d, he seeks us and our sensing this “partnership of prayer” should embolden and impassion our teshuva. Often times though, we need even more Divine assitance. Unquestionably, G-d empowers Man with absolute and unlimited freedom of choice. Yet despite the autonomy of choice He invested in us, G-d compassionately helps us make better decisions. In the end of the Parsha, G-d outlines, our absolute freedom of choice but encourages us to make the proper choice- “U’vacharta ba’chaim”. Even though, throughout life, we are “tested” to render proper decisions we are provided a “cheatsheet” with the correct answers. As Dovid writes in Tehillim (25) G-d is just as He instructs sinners toward repentance. However, G-d doesn’t just educate us toward better life-decisions but He also shades our free will. Pharo in Egypt, was always free to release the Jewish people; absolutely abolishing his free will was inconceivable. However, his lifestyle along with G-d’s intervening in his inner emotional world made his reversal extremely unlikely. We dig very deep “ruts” in life and sometimes G-d’s digs them
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
even deeper into pits. Well, if G-d can punish Paro by tilting his free will, he can, as an act of compassion, calibrate our free will by sending us powerful signals: external events and inner murmurings which goad us to teshuva. Ultimately, we remain entirely free to resist this goading, but G-d’s prodding can become very powerful and almost too powerful to avoid. Living through our current crisis, it isn’t difficult to hear and feel G-d goading us to teshuva. The global sweep of the pandemic deludes us into shirking personal responsibility. How can one individual possibly be responsible for a global pandemic which is indiscriminately affecting millions? Yet, despite this global feel, it is crucial to personalize the pandemic and collect individual messages. G-d is currently speaking to each person just as He is speaking to all of humanity. His message and His goading resonates more loudly this year than in past years. How we respond to this amplified message is entirely our choice as free men. Rabbi Moshe Taragin has taught at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion, for the past 22 years.

Weekly Dvar Torah F RO M ERETZ Y I S R A E L
Where Did Moshe Go? BY RABBI DOV LIPMAN Parshat Vayeilech begins with the words: “And Moshe went and he spoke all of these words to all of Israel.” The Torah relates that Moshe “went” somewhere but doesn’t tell us the destination. Where did Moshe go to? The Kli Yakar explains that Moshe didn’t go to any specific location. He points to the next verse in which Moshe says, “I am not able to go and come.” This was not a reflection of Moshe’s physical strength which had not waned as he got older. Rather, G-d would not permit him to continue living. Thus, to counter anyone who might think that Moshe’s strength was depleted, he walked around, he “went,” and showed that he still had his strength. Thus, the location where he walked was not significant. The point was that he was able to walk among the people. The Netziv’s approach is in direct conflict with the answer of the Kli Yakar. The Netziv explains that until this point in
the Torah, Moshe would gather the entire nation before him, and G-d’s presence would speak from within Moshe enabling his voice to reach the entire nation. Now, as Moshe approached his death, G-d’s Presence in Moshe began to dwindle and, as a result, he was no longer able to speak to the entire nation at once. This is why he needed to circulate among all the tribes to speak these words. I would like to suggest another answer which we can apply to our own lives as individuals and as a nation. As individuals, the beauty of living a life of Torah and mitzvot is that one never reaches a stage in life where one is simply relaxing. There are always mitzvot to perform and minyanim and shiurim to attend. As we can see from our Torah leaders who never officially retire, life is an opportunity and we continue to do whatever we can as long as G-d grants us the opportunity to do so. Moshe Rabbeinu had lived a complete and busy life. He was now giving over the
reins of leadership to Yehoshua. He could have taken the last few days of his life to relax and enjoy life for himself. Moshe did not do this. “Vayeilech Moshe” – “Moshe went.” It does not matter where he went. The point is that he kept on going. He forged on with whatever strength he had. This alone, perhaps even more than the specific words that he said here, is extremely inspirational. This message has great significance on a national level as well, especially now that we have returned to the Land of Israel. Moshe did not live an easy life. He was raised in the Pharaoh’s palace, he had to run away from Egypt for 60 years, he faced continuous rebellions from the Jewish people, and did not have a simple family life. But he never let any of this stop him from continuing to lead the Jewish people and serve G-d. He kept on going. Moshe “went” and kept moving forward. He also never gave up on his people despite G-d even offering him to destroy the Jews and to start again. No matter what downfall
he and the nation experienced, he stayed with it and never gave up. The struggles that we experience as a people today, especially in Eretz Yisrael, are great. We have continuous fires on the Gaza border, constant tension on the northern border, Palestinian terrorism which has sadly resurfaced again, and a chaotic political situation. Moshe teaches us not to let any of this get us down and to continue picking ourselves up and growing as a people and a country. As we read “And Moshe went” in this week’s Parsha, let us internalize Moshe’s example and allow nothing to stop us from continuing forward with G-d’s help both as a nation and as individuals.

A TORAH BITE FOR THE SHABBAT TABLE
Escaping routine RABBI GOODMAN This past Purim, after receiving our Mishloach Manos of Covid-19 from the Far East, many of us breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that the pandemic had not hit September time. Who could possibly imagine spending Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and barely praying with a minyan? However, here we are, a week before Rosh HaShanah, preparing to celebrate the Yomim Noraim “Corona style,” adapting to what was six months ago the unthinkable. Human beings are extremely resilient and can acclimate to almost any situation, no matter how outrageous it may initially appear. While this trait is basic to human survival (and sanity) and something for which we must thank Hashem, nevertheless, its spiritual repercussions leave much to be desired. Regarding the Mitzvah of Repentance, the Torah says in this week’s Parsha, “For this commandment that I command you
today—it is not hidden from you and it is not distant. It is not in heaven…Nor is it across the sea…Rather, the matter is very near to you—in your mouth and your heart—to perform it.” In other words, repentance is not rocket science. A person can make an about-turn and start marching towards Hashem in the blink of an eye. However, asks Reb Chaim Shmulevitz (1902-1979), if repentance is indeed so easy, why does it not feature more regularly in our day-to-day lives? If, spiritually speaking, repentance washes whiter than other detergents and removes even the toughest stains with relative ease, why do we leave it until Yom Kippur to start cleaning up our act? Reb Chaim answers that our general apathy towards repentance does not stem from a lack of appreciation of its benefits, rather from an inherent belief that we do not need to change. Since we are so adept at growing accustomed to our circumstances, any wrongful conduct we may perform quickly becomes part of
our habitual routine and, consequently, removed from our consciousness. Only what lies at the forefront of our minds grabs our attention; anything else flies by without a moment’s thought. Accordingly, to capitalize on the spiritual gift of repentance, we need to access our subconscious. Reb Chaim explains that this can only be achieved by an introspective process of self- questioning. Instead of coasting along on cruise control, we must constantly query our modus operandi and ask ourselves if what we are doing falls in line with what Hashem expects of us. Indeed, the Mitzvah of Shofar also embodies this principle. The Rambam writes that the Shofar’s cry proclaims, “Wake up sleepy ones from your sleep and you who slumber, arise! Inspect your deeds, repent, remember your Creator!” The Shofar is designed to jolt us out of our bad habits and reassess the everyday conduct of our lives. Unless we crack open the mundane routine of our lives, repentance will forever remain a valuable,

Nitzavim Vayeilech RABBI DR RAYMOND APPLE
YOUR CHILDREN TOO
Parashat Nitzavim promises a reward for our t’shuvah: “The Lord will open up your heart and the heart of your children” (Deut. 30:6). The S’fat Emet asks why the verse mentions our children. Surely the opening up of our hearts automatically brings dividends of Divine favour to our children! The S’fat Emet points out, however, the nature of the benefit which our children receive. If we lead an upright life it will be an example to our children, and they too will be likely to live according to the Almighty’s ways. This is one of the basic principles laid down in the Ten Commandments: if we live uprightly, our children are likely to follow... but if we (G-d forbid) commit transgressions, our children too will be tempted to sin.
STANDING TOGETHER
“Attem nitzavim hayom kul’chem” – “You stand together today before the Lord your G-d” (Deut. 29:9). This is how the sidra begins. It goes on to explain what is encompassed by “you” and “together”: “your heads, your tribes, your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel; your little ones, your wives, and your stranger who is in the midst of your camp, from your hewer of wood to your drawer of water” (verses 9-19). The list is so precise and detailed that it is obvious that no-one was too important or too lowly to be included.
Seeing that this Shabbat is just a few days before Rosh HaShanah, there must be a parallel between the list in the Torah and the membership roll of every contemporary Jewish congregation. The congregation which assembles on Rosh HaShanah is also an “attem nitzavim hayom” congregation. Differences in age, status, wealth or gender become quite irrelevant when the congregation assembles. The tycoon sits next to the pensioner, the VIP sits next to the social backbencher. The deeply religious person sits beside the person who is not quite certain whether he or she is a believer at all. If anyone is missing or feels unwanted, it is not a congregation. G-d has a place for each one in His world and there is a place for each one in the synagogue. According to some views, it is precisely this that is behind our emphasis on community prayer; we pray for each other and we each make up for the spiritual deficiencies in our neighbour. A verse in a recent Torah reading may be interpreted to yield the same meaning. Parashat Ki Tetzei, two weeks ago, tells us not to yoke an ox and an ass together (Deut. 22:10). The ox and the ass are quite different animals. Each one works at a different pace. The slow animal feels frustrated when the fast one keeps pulling him along; the fast animal feels frustrated when the slow one keeps pulling him back. Compromising and learning to value each other is too difficult for the animals.
Hilchot Shabbat As the situations involving the laws of Borer are numerous and very frequent, we thought it would be best to provide common examples (almost) following the A-Z of items/actions the laws apply to. A - Apples - The different types, tastes & colours of apples mean that once mixed, they are subject to the laws of Borer. B - Bread - If needed to defrost, may be removed even a long time before a meal. Wholemeal bread mixed with black or white slices is considered a mixture. C - Cutlery - Cannot be sorted in order to set a table unless it is near the time of the commencement of the meal. A person can instead scatter the pile of cutlery which will separate each piece from the other and then set the table even not close to the meal time. D - Dirt - If on food, may not be removed by soaking; it can only be done through rinsing. Soiled grapes are an exception and cannot be washed on Shabbat. One may also not pick inferior grapes from a stalk. E - Eggs - can only be shelled for
imminent eating. One can remove or rinse the bits of shell left after shelling. F- Fish - Small fish bones generally cannot be removed whilst eating. Large fish bones can have the fish removed from them. If feeding a young child, one should consult a Rabbi as there are other solutions. G- Garments - Are generally subject to all the laws of Borer. If they are tightly packed in a wardrobe, they cannot be selected for non-imminent use. If hanging on pegs, one can remove higher up garments to access the lower ones for immediate use. The same is true for other piles of LARGE items, but not small items. For the latter, one must fulfill the usual Borer conditions. H - Honey – If particles are still inside the honey, one may remove them together with a bit of honey. Opaque honey should be filtered but not on Shabbat. I - Insects - If these land in a drink, they should be poured/scooped out together with some of the liquid contents of the cup. J - Juxtaposition - as mentioned
10 SEPTEMBER 2020
But human beings belong to a different category. Endowed with the capacity to reason, to make allowances and to recognise the value of others is part of being human. Living in society teaches us the dignity of difference. For Jews, the place we learn the lesson is the synagogue, where all stand together in the presence of G-d.
WRITE YOUR OWN TORAH
The 613th commandment, the last one of the whole Chumash, is to write your own Torah: “Now therefore write this song for yourselves and teach it to the Children of Israel” (Deut. 31:19). The din is that everyone must write a personal Torah or at least help to make the writing of a Torah possible – even if you have inherited a Torah from your parents, even if your neighbour possesses a Torah, even if you live next door to a synagogue. Though this law is meant literally, some interpret in their own way by making up their own book of rules. The Tanach recognises this when it speaks of everyone doing what is right in their own eyes. They are convinced they can do a better job than the Torah. Other philosophies become their principles, other rules their ethics. And with what result? I answer the question with a memory. Once I worked for the Association for Jewish Youth in Britain. Amongst my tasks was organising weekend camps and seminars. On one occasion the participants wanted to compile their own Shabbat service, and I agreed. They worked on it diligently and tried many things. I made no comment when what they finally came back with was almost identical with the Siddur. Their
previously, one may only select or peel an item needed for a meal if one is due to begin the meal almost immediately after preparations are done. K - Knives - (NOT peelers) may be used to remove the peel of fruit and vegetables. L - Lettuce - if dusty may be rinsed. If there are small insects on the leaf it may not be rinsed (for more reasons than one). Large insects (flies etc) if dead can be rinsed; if alive removed with some leaf. Inferior outer leaves may be removed from the stem. Once in a salad, one may not remove inferior leaves. M - Melon - Watermelon seeds should not be removed. Honey-dew/cantaloupe melons may have their seeds removed if planning to eat that piece immediately, or preferably shaken off. N- Nuts - One may use a nutcracker to open these. O - Onions - may be peeled for almost imminent use. P - Pips - if safe/convenient to eat the fruit with the pip inside, one should not remove them. If not practical to eat with the pip it may be removed. R - Raisins – mixed with nuts is considered a mixture. S- Sefarim - if in a pile may only be selected if will be used in the ensuing study session. If the book has a distinct look and

conclusion was that writing your own service seems to lead you back to where you came from. In the 20th people tried many “isms”. Many still do in the 21st century. A significant record of this quest led to a book called, “The G-d that Failed”, about how communism let its adherents down. So did apartheid, and so did other perverted ideologies. Likewise, people try to formulate their own ethics – racism, vandalism, sadism, selfishness, cynicism, greed… the list is endless. Writing your own rules often ruins your own life as well as others’. Judaism said to write your own Torah. It meant the Torah of tradition. It was wise. If you look for Torah anywhere else you will eventually come back to the Torah of Moses and embrace it with your heart, soul and might. Rabbi Apple served for 32 years as the chief minister of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, Australia’s oldest congregation. He is now retired and lives in Jerusalem. Rabbi Apple blogs at http://www.oztorah.com
is not obscured by its surrounding books on the shelf, it can be removed even without intention of use. T - Toys - One must be careful to only select the ones required. When (if?) tidying up at the conclusion of play, one may not sort. V - Vegetables - can have their undesirable brown spots etc removed so long as a small but significant good section is removed with it. W- Wrappings - may be removed from a sweet or similar and is hardly considered a “mixture” as a peel would be. However, some say one should be stringent and only remove it prior to eating.

12TH SEPTEMBER 2020 – 9.30PM Chana, the leading UK fertility support organisation for the Jewish community understands how painful and uncertain taking that first step to a new beginning can be for some couples. “For many who call our helpline, that first step can be the hardest one of all,” says Chana’s Clinical Manager, Romy Shulman. “Clients often feel isolated when struggling with infertility and Chana provides a safe environment where they can receive the guidance to deal with their fertility issue.” “I speak to many of the new couples who contact us, determining what they need and matching them with the correct therapist to help them on their journey.” Chana’s team of 14 qualified psychotherapists share years of experience across a multitude of fertility issues. They help couples navigate the minefield of a constantly changing fertility landscape, felt even more keenly from the added anxiety of a recent global pandemic. Although clinics are open, clients are still faced with long waiting times, an over stretched NHS, limited services and the rising costs of treatment. For those dealing with infertility the path ahead is already unknown, so any additional uncertainty means Chana are working even harder to be there for couples. The charity provides a combination of science, medical and emotional support. Chana’s In-house Scientific Advisor, Dr Veronique Berman combines her knowledge with the expertise of 27 specialists in the world of fertility, leaving no stone unturned so that couples can begin, or complete their family.
Veronique explains, “I meet regularly with our Medical Advisory Panel who assess and discuss clients’ cases, all in strict confidentiality, to determine the best course of treatment for them.” “Together we navigate the range of fertility treatments on offer to ensure clients are utilising all NHS provision, as well as avoiding unnecessary costs and investigations in the private sector.” As well as helping couples take huge strides forward in their treatment choices, Chana are also glad to be breaking down taboos about infertility in general, which became evident during the charity’s recent successful fundraising campaign, Worth Every Donation. The campaign raised vital funds and the incredible support shown to the charity gave the team new confidence that Chana is valued by an increasing number of people in the Jewish community. “Infertility understandably is often a challenge couples chose not to share,” explains Carolyn Cohen, Chana’s Honorary Executive Director. “Our work highlights there is nothing to be ashamed of and our focus is always to find the best way forward for couples.” “During the campaign it was heart-warming to witness the courage of so many past clients openly sharing their stories, encouraging others in need of our support to make that call, so that no-one faces this journey alone.” For more information visit www.chana. org.uk or call Chana’s free helpline on 020 8201 5774.

THE ISRAEL PROPERTY BUYERS GUIDE Welcome to the CurrencyTransfer.com guide to buying a property in Israel. We passionately think that buying a home in Israel is exciting, fulfilling, and perhaps Zionistic adventure. We’re here to help. By Nathan Perez, Head of Israel Desk at CurrencyTransfer.com For more information on buying a property in Israel check out our free in-depth guide www.currencytransfer.com/israel-buyers-guide
The Legal Angle
The Mortgage
There are many nuggets in this category, as legal representation for property purchase is absolutely key in Israel. There is no “standard” transaction and having someone experienced in your corner batting for your interests is extremely valuable. The local market is culturally, and structurally unique, and we find that time and again foreign clients need to adjust their mindset and expectations to optimize their acquisition in Israel. Having the right legal advice is the best catalyst for a successful acquisition.
The most common mistake foreign clients usually make is to compare the real estate and mortgage industry between their home country and Israel. There are similarities but also huge differences. For example, a mortgage refusal in Israel is usually not considered as a reason to cancel a real estate deal.
The Basics: Counting Rooms Understanding Exchange Rates The three major types of transactions: Unfortunately there have been cases where clients have flown in to see a pre-prepared list of properties, only to discover that in Israel the living room is also counted as a room, and hence what they thought were a list of 4 bedroom properties, was actually a list of 3 bedroom (plus living room) properties. Also, “finished to a very high level” often means something different in Israel than in New York, London or Amsterdam. The standards and norms of where the customer is coming from will play a huge part in preparing a list of suitable properties.

£500,000 2,090,450
HIGH – 4.4134
£500,000 2,206,700
Think about this for a moment. A mere 4% shift in the currency exchange rates on a £500,000 property can at best, make the difference in the choice of furniture, and at worst, mean your dream home is no longer within budget. From key macro-driven interest rate decisions to political earthquakes like Donald Trump and Brexit, keeping abreast of market movements is essential. We help you navigate and budget every step of the way and ensure that the market fluctuations don’t get in the way of a once in a lifetime adventure. Locking in a rate today can give you peace of mind when purchasing your dream home in Israel. Take the example of the Morris family who is buying a house in Netanya and are required to make their final balance transfer in a month and a half. The current GBPILS exchange rate is attractive, within budget and the family decides they are eager to guarantee the Sterling cost of their property abroad. Non-Bank Foreign Exchange specialists will allow you to fix the GBP to ILS exchange rate now, giving you the comfort of knowing the exact cost of your property, regardless of what happens with fluctuations in the exchange rate. Forward contracts are the perfect method of budgeting and staying in control.
1. An existing property The agreement will be with the current owner. The terms of payment are to be negotiated. A common transaction would be one where there are 3 – 4 equal payments from signature to completion.
2. New property under construction The agreement will be with the developer. Payments terms will be spread over the construction phase. The down payment could be up to 25% with 10% left for hand over and the balance of 65% payable in equal quarterly payments throughout the process of construction.
3. Rights to erect a new property in a “Purchasers’ Group” Namely a number of parties who cooperate together to buy and develop a property, and then contracting themselves, as a group, with third parties to construct the development. The group will usually pay for the purchase of the land upfront, construction costs will be paid over the building phase in accordance with terms agreed by the group members in a cooperation agreement between them.
A range of currency options First and foremost recognize that the mortgage options are larger and more complex in Israel than in the rest of the world. Foreign buyers are able to take advantage of a range of mortgages in different currencies, including Israeli Shekel, Euro, US Dollar, and British Pound.
Mortgage provider options Prices between different lending banks very much depend on the clientele they target. It will usually vary according to the client profile and lender’s risk appetite. Be aware interest rates are currently higher in Israel than in Europe or North America for different reasons such as the cost of funds to the banks, the level of competition in the mortgage market and finally the disequilibrium between supply and demand of real estate and mortgages.
Factor In Total Costs Be aware of the additional expenses for a real estate purchase, including amongst others: Legal fees, Bank Arrangement Fees, Surveyor, Title registration, Purchase Taxes, Estate Agent, etc. Depending on your status, a good rule of thumb is to expect additional unanticipated costs of 10-15% of the purchase price. To conclude, never stretch yourself to the limit based on the purchase price alone, given all the additional payments that need to be made.

From the front line… BY JACQUELINE CURZON In the past week we've had news telling us we should dial 111 before heading off to A&E. I’m not sure that's going to be a popular piece of advice, and makes it even more of a lottery, if - or where - you will receive treatment. Coming from those with salaries equal to a modest lottery win, they’ll doubtless be alright, because when their chips are down, they will likely be taxied off to a smart private hospital, as part of their Executive Package. This directive for us to dial 111, or fill in an online enquiry form, is just another sidestep towards depersonalisation of Health Services. Jacqueline Curzon Who has time to fill in a form when you are really unwell, or have an in- PHOTO: LARA MINSKY PHOTOGRAPHY jury? Maybe the powers-that-be are worried that many of the neglected thousands [over the past 6 months] will now start turning up? NHS chiefs claim ‘the aim is to reduce crowding and direct (people) to the most appropriate place,’ adding those in need of an ambulance wouldn't be diverted, and insisting patients turning up in A&E without this appointment will at Leeds, and senior author of the study, not be turned away. added the fact that the ‘public delayed Dr Chris Moulton, former VP of the seeking help for heart attacks does not Royal College of Emergency Medicine, mean they aren’t having them; they and an A&E consultant says, "the last were deciding not to go to hospital.’ The thing you want in an emergency is to British (particularly those over a certain have to make a phone call. is estimated at around £3.5 billion. This figure suggests false claims were made for around 1 billion employees, paying them up to 80% of their wages. Critics say that it was ‘left wide open’ to fraud by employers claiming for staff who continued to work. This is something I've touched on before. This particular fraud is euphemistically called, ‘having your cake and eating it.’ I'm thinking of a particular case where a law firm was sending emails to clients, saying they were unable to to pursue business matters as the staff were on furlough. I then discovered (from a different partner) that they had all been working, without a break. Of all those who should be prosecuted for furlough fraud I'd like to start with these people, the ones who are supposed to be upholding their sword on the scales of justice, and who subscribe to six principles of fair practice: to uphold the rule of law and administration of justice, independence, integrity, best interests of each client, provide a good service and to not damage the profession’s reputation. Integrity underpins all the rest. At a symposium at The University of Exeter, as far back in 2008, Andrew Holroyd, OBE, then president of the Law Society of England and Wales, chaired a discussion as to whether there should be introduced a hippocratic oath, similar to that subscribed to by medical professionals. Going back to the earlier example, something is fundamentally wrong in society if a law firm is cheating the system, just because it can get away with it. It’s against all principles of decency, from those who hold everyone else to account. That was but one aspect of furlough. The other one was the ultimate cost to the taxpayer in terms of recouping these monies paid out. Should our taxes and other financial penalties now be significantly increased/ introduced as a consequence, it's very hard to turn around and complain, because there is, of course, no such thing as a free lunch. The bill will always be presented later, be it as a reciprocal favour for your boss, or actual monetary payback. And, as we’ve seen with Mr Sunak, accountability will inevitably come knocking. Anyone got the hotline number handy? We often think of students as a social group intent on breaking rules and boundaries, and often not held to account, but for students at Northeastern University in Massachusetts, violating coronavirus policy seems to have resulted in the ultimate punishment. The rules forbade them to have any visitors or guests in their 2 person dorm-rooms, and it appeared that they were also not wearing masks [unclear if they were supposed to be wearing said masks 24/7]. For this misdemeanour they have been

kicked off their first-year course, and have been told that they won't get their £27,500 (equivalent) fees back. They have a right to appeal in an expedited hearing, and I'll watch out for the updates. A particularly sad piece of news was of the television presenter, Emily Hartridge (35), who lost control of her scooter whilst on her way to a medical appointment. Whilst going over an inspector hatch in a cycle lane, she was thrown under a HGV in Battersea. The young lady died instantly in the first fatal accident involving e-scooters. Westminster’s coroner's court found that ‘the scooter was being driven too fast, with an under-inflated tyre which caused the loss of control and subsequently her death.’ So unbelievably sad, and probably avoidable. Take care, one and all, for scooters are more dangerous than we imagine. It's very rare that I report on anything in the arts, hindered of course by the lengthy lockdown shutdowns, but this week there was a review for Anoushka Shankar, who performed at the Royal Albert Hall. The four star review from reviewer Neil McCormick [Telegraph] described it as ‘one of the strangest Proms you could imagine with a voice from beyond launching a mediaeval Indian instrument on a journey into space. SiTAR Trek, boldly going where no player has gone before.’ Anoushka, daughter of the late sitar guru Ravi Shankar, was the maestro. Ravi Shankar created a symbiosis of western pop music and traditional Indian ragas, performing with many of the world's finest classical musicians, ultimately becoming a legend in his own lifetime. Ms Shankar performed her concert on stardate 4th September, to a ‘spaced out’ audience, and even though you likely missed it, you can energise with the technological benefits of iPlayer, and transport yourself to this realm, anytime within the next month, on iPlayer. Staying on a music note, I spotted an interesting obituary this week - that of Johnny Mandel (94), a Grammy and Oscar-winning composer. His best known theme tune was for the 1970 film - and subsequent series - M*A*S*H. I grew up appreciating both the humour and the music. Another of his hits was the soundtrack for Shadow of Your Smile, which won best song Oscar (1966). Mandel worked with great names in the industry, such as Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. That’s what we classify a sM*A*S*Hing life! Love Jacqueline x

JDA’s door-to-door hearing aid service is a lifeline at Rosh Hashanah
Of course I enjoy having my great grandchildren here. Before Andrew from JDA came and made my hearing aids work properly, it was exhausting trying to keep up with their excited chatter. But now I can hear again. I have my confidence back and am so looking forward to Rosh Hashanah and a home full of family and love. Since lockdown, audiology services have been closed and JDA has come to the rescue, travelling to people’s homes and making sure their hearing aids are in tip top condition. This Yom Tov, thanks to JDA, more and more people with hearing loss are enjoying life and feeling the joy of connecting with their loved ones again.

Nitzavim Vayeilech Word Search
This week we read the last parshiyot of the year 5780 - Nitzavim and Vayelech. Moshe begins by gathering all the Jews, of all ages and stages, and tells them that they are to be making a special agreement with Hashem. Never should anyone serve idols or abandon Hashem. If a person, family or tribe are planning to do so, they can expect G-d to be very angry with them. Moshe sees in the future that the Jewish people will leave Hashem’s ways unfortunately, but he reassures them that following being spread all over the world, Hashem will gather them all back to Eretz Yisrael. Next we have Vayelech wherein Moshe tells the Jews of a special Mitzva to be kept once every seven years - Hakhel. How wonderful it must have been to have people of all ages come to the Beit Hamikdash and hear the king read from the Torah. Moshe is also instructed to write a sefer Torah, which he manages to write many of all on the last day of his life. Enjoy the last Shabbat of 5780 and be back for more next year!

Nitzavim Vayeilech
In a nutshell Moshe was keenly aware of the drama and dread that was a key factor in last week’s long Sidra. He therefore opens this Sidra with calming words - “You are all standing here”. He had another reason to reassemble them; this was his last day on earth and he wanted to establish a firm agreement between Hashem and the Jewish People. “You are all here today..the heads of your tribes, your elders, your policemen, children and women, converts, some acting as wood choppers and water drawers.” Why are you here today - to establish this covenant between you and Hashem. Do not think, however, continues Moshe, that this is only for you who are physically standing here. All the Jewish people, forever, are to be bound by it. You, though, saw the land of Egypt and saw the “glamorous” despicable idols and maybe there is someone among you who has seeds of rebellion and wishes to have an idol themselves! He or she or they may think, “Peace will be with me for I will follow my heart”. No! Hashem’s anger will flare and the person will be subject to all the earlier-mentioned curses. To the extent that when the non-Jews see the desolation (as some
did during the almost-2000 years we were almost banished from the Holy Land) they will be astounded - “Why is this place in such ruins? What is this anger all about? And they will understand that it was due to the Jewish people forgetting the agreement made between Hashem and their ancestors. Moshe then continues with a prophecy - You will return to G-d - yes, after a long exile, the Jewish people will do Teshuva and G-d will return with you (for He too is in Galut in some way) and gather in all your people who have been scattered from Yugoslavia to Yemen, Scotland to Scandinavia, Greece to Greenland, New York to Newcastle, you will come back to Eretz Yisrael and grow to love Hashem once again. This Mitzvah (either referring to Torah or Teshuva) is not far up in the heavens, nor is it across a great ocean - it is within very easy reach - any Jew can return. Serve Hashem - especially when you’re young, then your children will follow you as you will set a good example and you will thereby have long days on the land that I promised your ancestors, Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov.
Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.
The second Parsha we read is the shortest one of all - 30 pesukim in total and a continuation of Moshe’s talk to the Jewish people. He encourages them to trust in G-d to assist Yehoshua with conquering the Land. The special Mitzvah of Hakhel is taught, in which the Jewish people are to gther once in seven years to the Beit Hamikdash to hear the Torah being read - yes even those too young to understand are more than welcome! Hashem tells Moshe that he was going to die soon and that the Jewish people would not always be faithful to the Torah and they will then experience what they imagine G-d to be hiding from them. Chassidic masters taught that we can look at this from another angle - even when so much seems hidden - when we don’t see instant answers to our problems or prayers - remember that it is Hashem Himself who is hiding. In the next Sidra, we are taught a special song - Haazinu, which we are first introduced to this week. In the meantime have a wonderful and meaningful Rosh Hashanah!

Lampard’s Chelsea have been the busiest of the Premier ‘top-four in the transfer window which ends on October 5th. RB Leipzig‘s Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell have arrived at the Bridge with Nice’s Malang SarrLondon and Lions Brazilian PSG defender 16-goal Maccabi Thiago Silva. This could be a tricky start for Spurs as Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton may be this season’s dark horses for honours. Ancelotti knows how to win silverware and with Real Madrid’s Columbian sharpshooter James Rodriguez arriving at the club alongside Allan from Napoli and Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, Tottenham then West Brom will have to be ready for the men from Goodison. This weekend’s other fixtures sees Crystal Palace host Southampton, West Ham vs Newcastle United, West Brom vs Leicester City and Sheffield United vs Wolves. Premier League clubs not involved in Europe line up in the Carabao Cup second round next week. With most top sides playing weakened line-ups in the early rounds there could be shocks. Salford City’s trip to Everton is the tie of the round but a shadow Premier side should have enough to progress. Sky Sports have selected Burton vs Villa on Tuesday, a double header of West Brom vs Harrogate and Everton vs Salford on Wednesday followed by south coast derby Brighton vs Portsmouth on Thursday. Villa may give a debut to striker Ollie Watkins from Brentford, who has just signed for a club record £28m. Watkins was joint-top Championship scorer with 26 goals last season. Champs Hendon hit six in season opener BY DAVID SAFFER Premier Division champions Hendon United Sports Club thumped newboys Jewdinese 6-1 on the opening day of the MGBSFL season as league games returned to the sporting calendar. Hendon boss Gabe John has taken the helm and the defending champs got off to a flyer with a clinical finish from Josh Bharier inside two minutes at Hadley FC. The match was over by half time as the hosts dismantled gallant Jewdinese with strikes from Chaim Korman, Akiva Levin and Bharier. Korman and Moses Sietler struck second half goals before the visitors, playing its first top division game, battled away and grabbed a consolation through Matty Lee. “We played our football the right way,” said John, who noted Rocky Spitzer was man of the match with an intelligent game from centre midfield. He added, “Bharier took his goals well and looked sharp. The back four were composed.” Jewdinese manager, Darren Lawrence, commented, “We knew going into the game it would be a huge test but in the second half we showed some positive signs. It’s definitely a learning curve for us. We’ll take positives from the game and move on.” Hendon play HMH on Sunday, and like their great rivals hit six, routing spirited Fairlop 6-3 in a nine-goal thriller. Avi Goldberg’s team led against the run of play but upped the intensity and scored four without reply. HMH wasted chances but ran out worthy winners. Ariel Rahamim, Adam Abadi, Oscar Wagner, Eli Wegryzn, George Goldberg, Leo Ackerman scored for the hosts. “The final score could easily have been more as we were profligate in front of goal,” said Goldberg. Faithfold Blue ran out 3-0 winners in a derby clash with Faithfold White at Spikes Bridge Park. The visitors took the lead midway through Dan Orgel before Rob Hershkorn finished with aplomb for a 2-0 lead. Zack Shooter slotted in to seal the points. “This was a top display from our lads who left nothing on the pitch,” commented White’s boss Ray Abrahams, who added that keeper Dan Lee saved his team on a number of occasions. Maccabi London FC ran out 4-3 victors against North London Raiders in a seven-goal thriller.

Max Kyte grabbed a brace, Mikey Perkins and Adam Arnold also hit the target for the hosts. Liron Mannie (2) and Nick Lewis scored for gallant newcomers Raiders. “A disappointing start to life in the Premier,” acknowledged Raiders’ Gideon Gale. “This was a stark reminder that mistakes will be punished. With that in mind, there are plenty of positives.” Oakwood and North London Galaxy shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Felix Shalom struck for Oakwood, Ethan Kessel scored for the visitors. “A fair result on the balance of play,” noted Oakwood’s Lewis Blitz. “Galaxy battled hard and made it difficult for us to play the football we like.” Borussia Barnet edged past Mill Hill Dons 2-1 in Division One. Barnet grabbed an early goal when Michael Kenley’s ambitious overhead kick turned into a perfect cross for Joe Woolf at the back post. Zac Cohen equalised just past the half hour. Both teams had chances before Kenley fired home the winner. FC Team picked up all the points in Two with a 2-0 win at Temple Fortune.

Johnny Haik and Ben Sollosi grabbed the plaudits with the goals. Teenager Oliver Ziff grabbed the headlines for Scrabble in a 3-2 win against Straw Hat Pirates. Josh Myers fired home a 20-yard free kick in the 87th minute to secure a terrific win but it was 16-year-old Ziff who impressed on his debut when he struck two goals. Yantin played a number of youngsters, also blooding 16-year-olds Ben Goodkind and Josh Myers, in a special performance. Hampstead Ducks and Jewish Care Redbridge grabbed a point apiece from set pieces. Joseph Metliss nodded the opener for the Ducks before Ross Weinrabe deservedly equalised. “A draw is a fair result,” commented Ducks Boss Jake Summerfield. “Both teams played well and defended robustly. I’m encouraged because we’d have crumbled last year.” Nick Barnett and Nathan Schindler fired home for Stoke Salmon who beat West Hendon Wallabies in a clash of the league newcomers. Cameron Hough scored for the Wallabies. Stoke boss Josh Fynn welcomed a “cagey start” to life in the league. “Ultimately the best teams are able to win ugly,” he noted. “We should’ve had the game wrapped up early, but credit to Wallabies they worked extremely hard to stay in the game and got their goal. But we dug in, showed character and won the game. We’ll get better.” Wallabies manager Gad Harari commented, “Our players came very close to what could have been a win. We were outplayed in the first half but controlled the second. We expect to tweak various short-comings of our game. I am happy with the performance, especially our defensive line.” Josh Cohen and Mikey Elia scored for Paris Saint Jewmain who defeated Club de Chigwell 2-1. Jake Sugar scored for Chigwell, who rued a missed penalty. “It was a tough result to take,” said Chigwell’s Joshua Dobias. “We are a new team and know that we need to be much more clinical.”
