ISRAEL ON HIGH ALERT 15 SEPTEMBER 2021/9 TISHREI 5782
@TheJewishWeekly 205
BY DAVID SAFFER
Israeli security forces are on high alert in the West Bank and Gaza. Tensions have increased since six Palestinian militants escaped from a maximum-security prison in northern Israel last week. Four fugitives who tunnelled out of Gilboa Prison have been captured following a “round the clock” search and have appeared in court on terrorist charges. Among those charged is Zakaria Zubeidi, 46, an Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade leader affiliated to Fatah. Islamic Jihad members in custody are Yaqoub Qadiri, Mohammad Aradeh and Zakaria Zubeidi. Defence Minister Benny Gantz has vowed to find the remaining
fugitives, reportedly Munadil Nafayat and Iham Khamaji, using “all forces and means available”. But there are growing concerns that Hamas will resume rocket attacks into Israel should the escaped prisoners be shot during what is proving a tough operation. Israeli troops have bolstered the border whilst Egyptian officials have reportedly told Hamas leaders that Israel will launch another operation if rocket fire does not stop. Since the manhunt began a week ago there have been a number of rocket attacks from Gaza and terror incidents. In recent days, two Charedi teens were wounded by an alleged lone terrorist in Jerusalem and the IDF
was forced to act after a Palestinian militant attempted to stab soldiers at Gush Etzion Junction. United Torah Judaism MK Meir Porush also had to fight off an assailant who attacked him and tried to cut off his beard. The attacker fled the scene. An uneasy tension continues and a new military operation in the Strip has not been ruled out of the IDF. “We are deployed on all fronts,” noted Gantz at a terrorism conference in Herzliya. “Israel has no intention of harming Palestinian residents of the West Bank or Gaza. We are attempting to promote policies to help develop economic CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

But if terror organisations try to use the current situation to work against local Palestinians who only want stability and economic development, they (the terrorists) will be the first to pay the price.” It was reported yesterday that the Prison Officers Investigation Unit has ascertained up to 10 prisoners knew of the escape plan. A number have been interrogated, others will be questioned in the coming days. A team of engineers are to check what is under all prison cells to rule out further escape attempts. The Israel Prison Service have reportedly said that accusations of negligence will be examined. They also noted that 300 escape attempts had been foiled over the past decade. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett praised the swift response by the police, Shin Bet and IDF in the manhunt but described the prison escape as a “succession of failures and mistake”. Bennett confirmed there would be a commission of inquiry after what he described as a “wake-up call” for national systems at his weekly cabinet meeting. “We must set national goals, put proper plans and workflows into action,” he noted. The escape was the biggest for decades and stunned Israeli authorities. Public Security Minister Omer Barlev vowed to capture the prisoners whilst an investigation would ascertain circumstances of the breakout. “We will get our hands on the fleeing terrorists, we will correct the failures that might have led to the escape, and if we find

Police said security forces are deployed at full strength and working “around the clock” to catch the fugitives. Mayor of the Jezreel Valley Regional Council, Eyal Bezer praised the manhunt. “Our residents are not concerned,” he said. “They are vigilant and many who had served in elite units during their military service, have joined the search in cooperation with the IDF and the police.” Following the escape, Palestinians celebrated and Hamas vowed to include the six prisoners in any future prisoner swap deal with Israel. Along with Islamic Jihad, Hamas called on Palestinians in the West Bank to carry out “collective punishment” attacks for PIJ prisoners in Israeli jails. Indeed, a number of fires broke out in prisons in protest to the manhunt. Gaza militants fired a rocket into Israel last Friday that was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system. A missile was then fired towards the Sderot on Sunday, resulting in the IAF striking targets in the Strip. A military spokesperson said the IDF targeted a rocket production site, military instillation, weapons storage facilities and terror tunnel. “Israel will not accept any action by terror organisations targeting Israeli civilians and will continue to strike in response to any aggression emanating from the Gaza Strip,” the IDF said in a statement. “The IDF hold Hamas responsible for any attack.” Rocket alert sirens blared in Israeli border communities last Saturday night.
CAA outrage over Nazi memorabilia BY ADAM MOSES BBC Bargain Hunt star Tim Weeks has apologised after it was revealed Nazi memorabilia was due to be sold at his Wessex Auction Rooms. The antiques expert withdrew Nazi-related items catalogued for sale after being questioned by the Daily Mail. Mementoes at his auction house included a £2,000 banner, £300 swastika and collection of badges. Campaign Against Antisemitism have questions for the TV personality despite commending him for apologising and removing the listings from his auction house. “He must now review their internal procedures to determine how the items were listed in the first place and to put in place measures to prevent it happening again.” The Board of Deputies of British Jews reportedly described the sale as ‘distressing, disturbing and hugely disrespectful’. Weeks, a Bargain Hunt regular since 2016, apologised for the incident, stating, “Upon learning that a number of Third Reich items are listed for auction I have contacted the head of our militaria department to withdraw them immediately from sale as we would never wish to cause any offence. We apologise if any has unintentionally been caused.” Sam Armstrong, of counter-terrorism thinktank the Henry Jackson Society, warned about the dangers of selling Nazi material. “A prime market for these vile symbols are the far-Right thugs who wish to attack this country and those who live in it,” he reportedly said.

CAA, meanwhile, are writing to Tennants auctioneers over its sale of Nazi memorabilia including medals, weapons, books, uniforms, badges and cutlery to inquire why it is offering for sale mementos from a genocide. The company claims that it has the “knowledge and experience clients can trust”, but CAA want an explanation how it is selling Third Reich artefacts including a tin of Third Reich machine gun magazines for £120-£180, a Third Reich SS Officer’s visor cap for £800£900, a collection of Nazi medals for £100£150, two Nazi Party badges for £100-£150, a “small quantity of German Third Reich related books” for £60-£80, various articles of Waffen-SS uniforms and more. “These items belong in a museum, not in the hands of sick collectors acquiring them from an auction house that stands to pocket thousands of pounds from these sales,” commented a CAA spokesperson. It is not illegal to sell Nazi ephemerae in England but is in some European countries including Germany and Austria.
Craniopagus twins seperated in Israel Craniopagus twins have come through a complex operation at Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva. The procedure last week by 50 medical experts from Israel and abroad to separate the conjoined twins is the rarest type of surgery having previously been carried out 20 times globaly. The girls were born at Soroka joined at the head but with separate brains in August 2020. “To our delight, everything went as we had hoped,” said Mickey Gideon, Soroka’s chief neurosurgeon.

Dr. Yafa Ashur, Soroka Deputy Director told Army Radio, “It wasn’t easy. Thankfully, their brains weren’t attached but the entire cerebral cortex and blood vessels were shared.” “They are breathing and eating on their own,” added Eldad Silberstein, head of Soroka’s plastic surgery department to Channel 12 news. The surgery, a first in Israel, took months of preparation and is believed to have cost an estimated NIS 7 million. The babies have not been named but are expected to lead normal lives.

Shechita UK welcomes Call for Evidence BY SIMCHA ABIR Shechita UK has welcomed the government publishing its long-awaited call for clearer food labelling. Officials hope that post Brexit, consumers will be able to make informed choices about food to aid animal welfare. The Call for Evidence aims to shape a system that is simple, cost-effective for businesses and supports the environment. Shechita UK are submitting to the consultation. They remain confident the government will work with faith communities on the policy and restate a commitment to the “protection of religious slaughter”. “Shechita UK fully supports the concept that consumers have every right to know what they are eating, where their food comes from, that it meets required standards, and if they so require, as Jews do, how their meat was prepared,” commented Shimon Cohen, a director at Shechita UK. Cohen however warned it was essential that labels are “honest and non-discriminatory” or it may lead to an “inadvertent deception” of the consumer and “affront to faith communities”. He added, “With regards to slaughter, one dimensional labelling such as ‘stunned’

or ‘non-stunned’ would be innately pejorative and misleading to the consumer. It would advance the myth that mechanical, industrialised stunning is an all-encompassing, animal welfare panacea. It is not. Mechanical stunning methods which include captive bolt devices, firearm with
free projectile, electrical stunning, electrical waterbath stunning and asphyxiation by gas all cause pain and distress to the animal. They also frequently go wrong, leaving the animal in even greater, prolonged agony. If true consumer information is the goal, then comprehensive labelling that denotes the specific method of slaughter used needs to be provided.” The Call for Evidence is open for 12 weeks and builds on commitments in the Agriculture Act 2020. Evidence will be used to inform policy proposals on labelling for animal welfare before a review of food labelling to inform the UK Government’s Food Strategy White Paper. Environment Secretary George Eustice said, “We have an opportunity to look at food labelling and whether the information that we give to shoppers helps them make informed choices. This call for evidence is a first step in ensuring that we fully meet consumers’ needs, and fly the flag for the high standards for which our farmers are renowned.” Future policy proposals are subject to consultation, and relates to England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Anti-vaxer Shoulian dies from COVID-19 Anti-vax campaigner Hai Shoulian has passed away from COVID-19 at Wolfson Medical Centre in Holon. Shoulian, 57, organised demonstrations against the ‘Green Pass’ system in Israel. He was admitted to hospital last week where he tested positive for coronavirus. Shoulian claimed to followers on social media from hospital that Jerusalem Police had tried to poison him and the Health Ministry had also targeted him. The activist was arrested at an anti-‘Green Pass’ demonstration in Jerusalem last month before appearing in court. Shoulian was taken ill shortly afterwards, his condition deteriorated in hospital. On Saturday, he posted a photo of himself connected to a ventilator. Shoulian refused to be vaccinated claiming there was “no epidemic” and the vaccine was “unnecessary and dangerous.” Following his death, a number of followers claimed he received poor treatment due to his beliefs. The ‘Green Pass’ requires Israelis to present proof of vaccination or recovery to enter public buildings. Measures also cover mask wearing and vaccines.
Lapid presents Gaza plan Bennett and el-Sisi
Gaza port

BY SIMCHA ABIR Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has presented a long-term plan to advance economic prosperity, security and stability in the Gaza Strip. An initial stage will see Israel facilitate the rebuilding of Gaza’s electricity, water, health care, housing and transport in exchange for a coordinated effort against Hamas’s military build-up. The second stage will include construction of a port and transportation link between the Strip and West Bank. Lapid told delegates at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism conference in Herzliya that Hamas stood between Gazans enjoying a “normal life”. “We need to tell Gazans at every opportunity, Hamas is leading you to ruin,” he noted. “No-one will come and invest real money, and no-one will try to build an economy in a place from which Hamas fires and which Israel strikes on a regular basis.”
Lapid added, “The representative body of the Palestinians isn’t Hamas, but the Palestinian Authority. Israel won’t hand out prizes to radical terror organisations and weaken the authority that works opposite us in an organised manner.” Lapid views the Palestinian Authority and Egypt as key partners in the plan to revitalise Gaza. The plan empowers the PA with responsibility for the crossings. Israel would encourage international investment inside the Gaza Strip whilst joint economic projects with Israel, Egypt and the PA would be advanced. And Industrial and employment zones would be built near the Erez Crossing. Defence Minister Benny Gantz spoke about relations with the PA at the conference. “We have a political dispute with the leaders of the Palestinian Authority, which must be resolved, but we share a common desire for peace and security for all those who live between the sea and Jordan,” he told delegates. “It is for this reason, that I decided to meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, who has been working against terrorism over the years, in the interests of his people and his national vision.” Gantz added, “In these challenging times, coordination with the Palestinian Authority and strengthening the Palestinian economy is dozens of times better than strengthening Iranian proxies on our borders.” Slow progress is taking place on the issue but it is affected by Hamas’ resolve to destabilise matters at the Strip.
‘deepen ties’ BY ADAM MOSES Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has “laid foundations for deeper ties” with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi following landmark talks in Egypt this week. The first official trip by an Israeli premier to Egypt in a decade took place at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh where the leaders discussed diplomatic, security and economic issues. Bennett stressed Egypt’s significant role in maintaining the security stability in the Gaza Strip and finding a solution to Israel’s missing soldiers. Following the meeting, Bennett thanked El-Sisi for his hospitality at the coastal city. The two leaders agreed to continue deepening the cooperation and dialogue between the two countries in all spheres. “The meeting was very important and very good,” he told reporters. “First and foremost, we created a foundation for deep ties in the future. We discussed a series of issues in the diplomatic, security and economic spheres, as well as ways to deepen ties and strengthen the interests of our countries.” Bennett added, “Israel is increasingly opening up to the countries of the region, and the basis of this longstanding recognition is the peace between Israel and Egypt. On both sides we must invest in strengthening this link, and we have done so today.” Bennett noted that the peace accord

signed between the nations in 1979 is the bedrock of security and stability in the Middle East. Israeli and Egyptian officials also attended the meeting. A spokesperson for Sisi said that his country supported efforts to bring peace between Israel and the Palestinians on the basis of the two-state solution as it would boost security in the region for all people. The trip coincided with increased travel between Israel and Egypt. Israel’s Transportation Ministry confirmed the Taba Border Crossing between Israel and Sinai is fully reopening for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also been reported that Egyptair is also to operate weekly flights between Cairo and Tel Aviv from October.

Organised Israel group programme resumes The Israel Ministry of Tourism resumes its tourist pilot programme from September 19th. Organised groups of five to thirty tourists from “green, yellow and orange” countries can visit Israel. There is no limit on the number of foreign groups in the programme. Foreign tourists must have proof of a second Israel Ministry of Health-recognised vaccination in the last six months or receipt of a third vaccination to qualify for entry into Israel. Tourists must also present a negative PCR test taken up to 72 hours before arrival and undergo PCR and serological tests on arrival at Ben Gurion Airport. It is hoped individual tourists will be allowed into Israel in the near future though it depends on morbidity rates in Israel and around the world. “We are delighted to take the first step in opening our borders to international visitors once more,” said Sharon Bershadsky, Israel Tourist Office UK. “There are numerous reasons for travel wishers to visit our country.” The pilot programme initiated last May for foreign tourists to visit Israel was viewed a success with 2,000 visitors mainly from the United States and Europe. No COVID-19 cases were identified. The initial rollout was hit due to the acceleration of the Delta variant in Israel.
Neo-Nazi leader sentenced to three years BY SIMCHA ABIR The leader of Neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division leader has been handed a three-year prison term on conspiracy and hate crime charges. Cameron Shea, 25, was sentenced at the US District Court for the Western District of Washington after threatening journalists and activists who expose anti-Semitism. S. District Judge John Cameron Shea C. Coughenour was clear Shea’s conduct would not be tolerated. Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman added that hate-filled conduct struck at the “heart of our communities”. Shea’s goal, she noted was to make people “fearful in their own homes”. “He recruited and cheered on others who joined his sick scheme,” added Gorman. “This federal prison sentence underscores the human damage from his crimes.” The Justice Department will “aggressively prosecute” defendants who “threaten violence against individuals”, noted Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “The Justice Department is committed to BS''D
prosecuting to the full extent of the law, violent neo-Nazis and other perpetrators of hate crimes,” she added. Shea pleaded guilty to interference with federally-protected activities because of religion, posting threatening communications and cyberstalking last April. Shea also pleaded guilty to interfering with a federally-protected activity because of religion. PHOTO: SOUND CLOUD Shea and three co-defendants were charged with conspiring via an encrypted chat group. The accused created posters featuring Nazi symbols, masked figures with guns and Molotov cocktails along with threatening messages to deliver or post to victims. Shea messaged the group to place posters on victims’ homes in Tampa, Seattle and Phoenix on the same night in a “show of force”. Shea sent a poster to an Anti-Defamation League official. Text read “Our Patience Has Its Limits. You have been visited by your local Nazis.” ADL have since warned the group has recast as the National Socialist Order and remained a threat.
A Campaign Against Antisemitism spokesperson said, “When people who describe themselves as ‘your local Nazis’ harass you, there is only one place where they belong, prison.” CAA added, “The US federal courts are right to impose this custodial sentence for such a despicable campaign of intimidation against activists and journalists.” CAA applauded Home Secretary Priti Patel who banned Atomwaffen Division in the UK earlier this year to prevent the importation of “abhorrent ideology into this country”. Two of Shea’s co-defendants pled guilty to a conspiracy charge and were sentenced. A fourth defendant pled not guilty and faces trial next month. The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces in Tampa, Seattle, Houston and Phoenix along with the Seattle Police Department. In related news, a Federal Bureau of Investigations report released last week recorded 57.5% of hate crimes against a religious minority in the US are “motivated by offenders’ anti-Jewish bias”. Jews represent around 2% of the US population. It 2019, 60.2% of reported hate crimes were motivated by religious bias against Jews. Disturbingly, most antisemitic crimes are not reported. FBI records hate crimes against Jews as motivated by religious bias rather than racial or ethnic bias.

Student leaders begin Lauder Fellowship Two Israelis die in plane crash
Ronald S. Lauder Fellowship 2021
BY SIMCHAH ABIR Jewish student leaders from 14 countries have formed the third group of the Ronald S. Lauder Fellowship. World Jewish Congress announced the news that 21 participants will undergo leadership training, engage with global figures and develop bonds for future collaborations. “This generation of advocates will play a critical role in ensuring the future of global Jewry, starting with university campuses, which have unfortunately seen a surge in antisemitic and anti-Israel activity,” commented Lauder. “The Fellowship will equip this cohort of outstanding student leaders with skills and resources to make a positive difference in local communities for years to come.”
PHOTO: THE WESTERN WALL HERITAGE FOUNDATION
During the one-year program, participants will meet in New York City and across Europe to develop advocacy tools. With support and guidance from the WJC, the group will develop personalised work plans to implement specific initiatives. Previous fellows have led events on International Holocaust Remembrance Day and helped create a memorial to honour victims of the Halle synagogue shooting Yom Kippur in 2019. The outgoing cohort launched projects including the 2021 Israel Summit and Rimon Movement. Caterina Cognini, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, said Jewish leaders leave a mark on communities. “The Fellowship gives you the opportunity
to meet and engage with other activists from all around the world and create connections between countries and continents,” he said. The Israel Summit is an international movement offering conferences aimed at unaffiliated students on campus. Top speakers and career fairs broaden students’ horizons on the State of Israel. The Rimon Movement is united in its commitment to Israel as a cornerstone of Jewish life. Student leaders address complex issues to advance a connection to Israel. The Lauder Fellowship is an international network of student leaders with interests in diplomacy, politics, communications and other fields.
Former Communications Ministry deputy director Haim Garon and his wife Esti died in a plane crash near Greece on Monday night. The Garons were reportedly on their way to North Macedonia when their private aircraft, a Cessna 182, crashed near the island of Samos. The plane disappeared from radar around 8pm (Israel time). The cause of the crash is unknown, the four-passenger plane operated from an airfield in Haifa. According to local media, three ships and a Greek Air Force Super Puma helicopter attended the crash site. “He was so happy to fly,” a relative repordly told Israeli media. “He bought that plane together with a partner and would fly abroad frequently. He was a responsible pilot, we cannot comprehend what happened there.” Garon was a prosecution witness in former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trial. Garon’s testimony was important in Case 4000. The Foreign Ministry identified the victims, both 69, and is organising the return of their bodies. Greece’s Air Accident Investigation and Aviation Board is establishing the causes of the crash.

CAA concern over Scottish Greens BY ADAM MOSES Campaign Against Antisemitism has voiced concern over the Scottish Green Party’s position regarding Zionism, aliyah and Hamas. CAA’s concern follows Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon announcing a historic agreement with the Greens to create a majority in the devolved Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. The SNP leader’s accord is a mandate for a second referendum on Scottish independence though the deal is not a full coalition. The SNP-Scottish Greens deal excludes international relations. Scotland’s first minister has announced the first Green party ministers in a UK government, Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater. Ratification is expected, but CAA has called for an immediate review of the Greens’ position regarding specific policies along with clarification by Sturgeon on Scottish Government policy due to “extremist elements” in her political allay. The Scottish Greens adopted Policy Motion 2 in 2015 (on a Saturday denying orthodox Jews a chance to vote) resolving that Israel was an apartheid state, Zionism a racist ideology based on Jewish supremacy in
Pope calls for Christians and Jews to fight antisemitism Pope Francis has called on Christians and Jews to unite against rising antisemitism in Europe during a four-day pilgrimage to Hungary and Slovakia. The Pope made his comments in PHOTO: Slovakia prior to Pope Francis SHUTTERSTOCK paying respect at a Holocaust memorial in Bratislava, built on the site of a synagogue destroyed in the 1960s. After Slovakia declared independence from Czechoslovakia in 1939, Roman Catholic priest Jozef Tiso became president. And under his rule, the country adopted anti-Jewish laws, deporting 75,000 Jews to Nazi death camps where 68,000 perished. Tiso was sentenced to death for his actions and hanged in 1947. Around 5,000 Jews live in Slovakia amongst today’s five million plus population. The government apologised for past racial laws against Jews to mark the 80th anniversary of the Jewish Code last week. Expressing remorse over the regime, the code was among the toughest anti-Jewish laws adopted in Europe during World War 2. But Slovakian politics includes far-right People’s Party Our Slovakia party. Members use Nazi salutes and want Slovakia to leave the European Union and NATO.
Palestine and Hamas is not a terrorist organisation. The motion still stands. Aside from brazen viewpoints to Jewish communities the Greens also support the BDS movement. Joe Glasman, CAA Head of Political Investigations, described the positions adopted by the Scottish Greens six years ago as “abhorrent” to British Jews and opponents of antisemitism. “All decent Scots will have been appalled by the surge in racism against the Jewish community during the recent conflict between Hamas and Israel, which saw demonstrations featuring antisemitic chanting and the display of the Hamas insignia,” he noted. “Now, as campaigns for Hamas to be proscribed in full by the British Government are in full swing, a Party whose stated policy is the very opposite now sits in the Scottish Government. “The Party’s rise to national prominence in Scotland demands immediate review of its position on Zionism, ‘aliyah’ and Hamas. Sturgeon noted antisemitism would “not be tolerated” in Scotland. CAA has written to the Home Secretary calling on her to proscribe Hamas in full, and has urged all MPs to do the same. CAA is closely monitoring both the Greens’ and SNP activities. CAA has documented alleged antisemitism among Green Party officers in England and Wales. And has previously reported about SNP members comparing a political party to the Nazis. Peter Grant, MP for Glenrothes, “apologised unreservedly” for insensitive and inflammatory tweets. SNP candidates Stephanie Callaghan Colm Merrick, have also apologised for inappropriate posts. “Politicians must set an example by learning the lessons of the Holocaust,” noted a CAA spokesperson at the time.
Israel heads for 10m population by 2024
BY BELLA WAXLER World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder addressed world leaders at the 2021 G20 Interfaith Forum in Bologna on Sunday. Lauder appealed for a global effort to strengthen religious education. The ‘Time to Heal: Peace Among Cultures, understanding Between Religions’ gathering focused on the role of religion in improving global challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread violence, disruption of formal education, racism and climate change. “With all the problems we face, it is religion that is most in danger,” Lauder said. “Religion has given humankind hope and purpose for thousands of years. It has taught us essential concepts such as forbearance, charity, purpose and the importance of family.” But, Lauder warned, a new generation had “no connection” to religion. Lauder recalled attacks against people houses of worship in the United States as evidence of a need to counter hate and intolerance. Describing incidents as “sacrilegious,” Lauder mentioned mass shootings at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina and a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. “When young people are not learning the basic rules of decency, they gravitate toward the teaching of hate and intolerance,” he said,

adding, “All of us have the power and responsibility to turn this around. This can only come through education. “We must foster a dialogue of positive interfaith relations, we must help people in poor nations educate their youth with the best parts of their religion, we must recruit the most thoughtful and decent teachers for this process, and we must use the internet, because that is the only way to connect with young people today,” Lauder continued. The G20 Interfaith Forum offers an annual platform where people representing religiously linked institutions and initiatives engage on global agendas. The gathering builds on the premise that religious institutions have a vital role in world affairs and in highlighting diversity as a means of solving some of the world’s greatest challenges.

Israel is heading towards a population of 10 million in 2024. The Central Bureau of Statistics annual report released on Sunday showed that Israel’s population has reached 9,391,000 as the country gets set for Rosh Hashanah. CBS stats showed the population grew by 146,000 in the past 12 months representing 1.6% growth. The average birth rate remains at 2.9 children, a dip on previous years. The population includes 6.9 million Jews (74%), 1.98 million Arabs, including Muslims and Christians (21%) and 466,000 (5%) residents from other minorities and religions. The past year saw 172,000 Israeli couples have a baby, 48,000 Israelis passed away (7,154 from COVID-19). Despite travel restrictions there were 20,000 new immigrants. According to CBS, 44.8% of Jews define themselves as secular, 20.5% marginally observant, 12.5% partially religious, 11.7% religious and 10% ultra-Orthodox. Life expectancy of Israeli men is 80.7 years, women 84.8.

Attorney general asked to review neo-Nazi sentence BY SIMCHA ABIR The Attorney General has been asked to review a lenient sentence handed out to a neo-Nazi guilty of a terrorism charge at Leicester Crown Court last week. Ben John, a 21-year former De Montfort University student, of Addison Drive, Lincoln, who evaded prison “by the skin of his teeth” according to the judge, had “a wealth” of white supremacist and anti-Semitic material on hard drives. John received a 24-month sentence, suspended for two years, after being found guilty of having nearly 70,000 neo-Nazism and bomb-making documents. The offence under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act carries a maximum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment. According to media reports, John was ordered to read classics by Dickens, Austen, Shakespeare and Hardy and return to court every four months to be “tested” by the judge starting in January. Campaign Against Antisemitism described the sentence as “inexplicable”. “For all the novels that the judge has ordered Mr John to peruse as he enjoys his unearned freedom, it was notable that Crime and Punishment was not among them,” noted a CAA spokesman. “Perhaps the judge himself ought to review that classic as he reflects on the risk that his sentence poses to the public.” Hope Not Hate’s chief executive Nick Lowles called for review of the case. “That is a dangerous message to send when the far-right poses the fastest growing terror threat today,” Lowles noted. “These sorts of lenient sentences risk encouraging other young people to access and share terrorist and extremist content because they will not fear the repercussions of their actions.” A spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office confirmed the request for John’s sentence to be considered under the unduly lenient sentence scheme covers serious offences including hate crime and terrorism-related offences. Law Officers have 28 days from sentencing to consider and rule on the ULS case. The court heard that John was labelled a terror risk just after his eighteenth birthday. He was referred to the Government’s counter-terrorism scheme, Prevent, but continued to download “repellent” right-wing documents, which included the Anarchist Cookbook written during the 1970s. The author of the book has since stated the basic premise behind book was “profoundly flawed”. In January 2020, John was arrested and charged with offences under the Terrorism Act. He had collated 67,788 white supremacist, antisemitic and Satanic documents. Lincolnshire Police said John had become “part of the Extreme Right Wing (XRW) online” and was studying Criminology with Psychology in Leicester when arrested. Detective Inspector James Manning,

It was not light reading,
or material most would concern themselves with for legitimate reasons. This has been a long and complex investigation over the course of eleven months.” Judge Timothy Spencer QC labelled John a lonely individual “highly susceptible” to recruitment but was not of the view that harm was likely be caused. However, he observed that Nazi, fascist and Adolf
Hitler-inspired ideology material and extreme right-wing, white-supremacist material was not mere academic fascination. “To a significant degree you have aligned with these ideologies and to a significant degree have adopted the views expressed as your own,” he noted. Harry Bentley, John’s barrister, said John was “fascinated” by extreme right-wing views and shared those views himself but was not “a lost cause”. Bentley said the case was about not deleting items on a computer, an argument the judge dismissed. John also received a five-year Serious Crime Prevention Order and must attend 30 days on a Healthy Identity Intervention programme. His online activity will be monitored by police.

Portman guilty of calling CAA’s Falter “Jewish scum” BY SIMCHA ABIR
The Hon. Piers Portman has been found guilty of calling Campaign Against Antisemitism’s Chief Executive Gideon Falter “Jewish scum” in a confrontation at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in 2018. Portman, 50, was prosecuted after approaching Falter following the sentencing of Holocaust denier Alison Chabloz. CAA brought a private prosecution against Ms Chabloz which the Crown Prosecution Service took over and led to a landmark conviction. Falter had testified against Chabloz, who has been repeatedly sent to prison over antisemitic statements, including denying the Holocaust and claiming Holocaust survivors invented their suffering for financial gain. Portman confronted Falter in the lobby of the court building, extended his hand to Falter who refused to shake it because the building was filled with what he told Southwark Crown Court was a “Who’s Who of Holocaust deniers, neo-Nazis and far-right extremists”. As Portman extended his hand, Falter replied, concerned that Portman might be part of Chabloz’s entourage, “I’m very sorry but I can’t shake your hand because I don’t know who you are.” The Court heard that Portman became “very enraged”, saying, “I’m Piers Portman. I have written to you before. Come after me, you Jewish scum. Come and persecute me. Come and get me.” Portman was told to leave by security staff. When police arrived, Portman had left the
Tragedy strikes Uman Tragedy struck a group of Breslov pilgrims in Uman after Rosh Hashanah. Rabbi Avraham Levy, zt’l, was fatally injured in the car crash after attending the tomb of the movement’s founder Rabbi Nachman with thousands of worshippers. Four Israelis have minor injuries sustained in the accident. Paramedics failed to resuscitate Rabbi Levy, 45, who is survived by his wife and 10 children. The accident occurred when a minibus carrying the group collided with a bus around 80km from Uman on route to Kiev Airport on route for a flight to Israel. Hatzalah volunteers recited Kaddish at the scene of the accident. It has been reported the shuttle driver was blinded by headlights of the bus in a head-on collision. Rabbi Levy was the son of Rabbi Hershey Levy of Boro Park. He is a son-in-law of Rabbi Yechezkel Silverman of Williamsburg. ZAKA, Israeli diplomats, Chabad’s shaliach and Chevra Kadisha in Kiev arranged repatriation of Rabbi Levy’s body for burial before Shabbat. Another pilgrim was critically injured in a car accident traveling from Uman to Lviv. A 46-year–old man who travelled to Uman with three of his children is ventilated at a hospital in Uman. Two children have returned to Israel.
area. CAA checked e-mails received from the name Piers Portman, finding a 1,527-word screed in which Portman denounced his former wife and her divorce lawyer, Baroness Fiona Shackleton, each as a “greedy, grasping and lying manipulator of the system that happens to be Jewish.” Portman accused his former wife of “playing the Talmud inspired ‘Tyrant posing as a victim.’” Noting he had a “Harrow Public School education”, Portman defended the term “Holohoax”, writing that “I fail to see how the fabricated word has anything to do with hating anyone. Surely it is merely an expression created by people that believe they have been lied to,” and questioning how the terms “Jew” and “Jewboy” could be antisemitic. Portman concluded his e-mail by taunting CAA to “Come and pick on me.” Falter said, “This is a good result for British justice and British Jews. This despicable, unrepentant antisemite instructed his lawyer to tell the court that he is an honourable man being framed by lying Jews. The jury saw straight through Mr Portman, whose hatred of Jews speaks for itself. This verdict reaffirms my belief in the justice system of our country. It shows that even the wealthiest and most privileged cannot escape British justice and will face the consequences of their anti-Jewish racism.” Sati Dhadda, from CPS, said, “Antisemitism has no place in our society and will not be tolerated.” Portman’s conduct Dhadda added was “disgraceful and utterly
audacious” in a courthouse. “No-one should be subjected to such abuse based on their race or religion,” they noted. Under cross examination Portman said he had been attending Chabloz’s to “learn more about my own circumstances”, claiming he was being “persecuted by Jewish tyrants posing as victims”. Portman claimed that he felt that the conviction in June 2018 of Chabloz was “unfair”. At one point during his testimony, His Honour Justice Gregory Perrins had to tell Portman to stop talking about his divorce from his ex-wife as he was breaching a court injunction. Portman hired Lewis Powers QC to defend him who at one point was called out by the judge over baseless statements to the jury. The defence case was that Falter and a colleague had “fabricated” the fact that Portman had said “Jewish scum”. Portman was accompanied throughout proceedings by conspiracy theorist Matthew Delooze. In a majority verdict, 10 out of 12 jurors at Southwark Crown Court found Portman guilty of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm and distress. Portman will be sentenced next month. His Honour Justice Perrins warned, “I am not ruling any sentence out”. CPS has confirmed it will be seeking a hate crime sentence uplift. CAA thanked the Community Security Trust for providing specialist protection officers to keep personnel safe in court.
Mobile phone thefts Shomrim north west London have received multiple reports of criminals using bikes and mopeds to snatch mobile phones from people in Golders Green and Hendon. Shomrim are working closely with local Police to gather CCTV footage to ascertain potential suspects. Often victims are approached from behind while talking or texting on phones. Criminals may mount the pavement to grab a phone or snatch it from the road. A pillion passenger may snatch items. Criminals are operating during the day. A set of steps have been provided to help stop these incidents. Be aware of surroundings, look out for anyone on a bike or moped. If you need to call or use your phone on the street make it quick so you don’t become distracted. Don’t text while you’re walking, if that’s not possible, stand away from the roadside, close to a building or wall, so no one can come up behind you. Going hands-free can prevent a thief snatching your phone out of your hand. Use the keypad lock/finger print or facial recognition so thieves cannot immediately access a phone. Check other security features to wipe data, lock a handset or prevent a thief restoring a phone to its factory settings from another internet device. Consider installing an anti-theft app. This can help police trace a phone and identify a thief. Every phone has a unique IMEI number which helps police and insurance companies identify if it’s stolen. Find your IMEI number by dialling *#06# from your phone. If you have been a victim report to the Police on 999 and Shomrim NW London on 03009991234.
Iran is a “global” problem BY ADAM MOSES Iran’s nuclear aspirations is not only Israel’s problem but a global issue. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid made the comments on his first state visit to Russia and warned that should Israel need to respond they will “reserve the right to act”. Defence Minister Benny Gantz meantime, reportedly accused Iran of utilising Kashan airbase north of Isfahan to train “terror operatives” from Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon to fly Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Gantz was speaking at a counter-terrorism conference at Reichman University near Tel Aviv and added that Iran was trying to organise “manufacturing of UAVs in the Gaza Strip”. His office showed satellite images of UAVs on Kashan runways. Lapid was speaking at a press conference when he referred to reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Describing them as “damning”, he noted, “They include serious violations, fraud, deception and outright lies. The picture is clear and very worrying.”
Yair Lapid

Lapid added, “Iran’s march toward a nuclear weapon is not only an Israeli problem. It is a problem for the entire world. A nuclear Iran will lead to a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.” He continued, “The world needs to stop Iran from getting a nuclear capability, no matter the price. If the world doesn’t do it, Israel reserves the right to act.” The UN’s nuclear watchdog compiled the reports after inspecting Iranian nuclear facilities.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Lapid travelled to Moscow on a one-day trip after Rosh Hashanah where he met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss diplomatic and security issues. And Israel’s foreign emissary made it clear the Iranian regime’s influence in Syria was destabilising the Middle East. “Unfortunately, there won’t be security in Syria or the wider Middle East while there is an Iranian presence,” he noted. “Iran is the world’s number one exporter of terror, and it threatens us all.” Lapid stressed Israel would “not sit quietly” while Iran built terror bases on its northern border or “advanced weapons to terror organisations”. “Israel will maintain our ability to defend ourselves in the face of threats from Syria and elsewhere,” he warned. Lavrov confirmed there were ongoing discussions between Jerusalem and Moscow on the troubled region. He also had accepted an offer from Lapid to visit Israel. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov held talks with US envoy on Iran, Rob Malley, to discuss the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

For decades, organised trips to Israel have provided the impetus for ongoing communal involvement and activism from our community’s teenagers and young adults. Before the pandemic over 2,000 were taking part in these trips, overseen by UJIA, every year. In the last 18 months this number has dropped to almost zero. To counter this, UJIA is committed to sending 10,000 Jewish teenagers and young adults on an organised Israel experience over the next three years. Spirituality and pastoral care at Jewish Care “Spirituality means different things to different people,” says Rabbi Menachem Junik, Jewish Care’s Spiritual and Pastoral Lead, who is part of the multi-disciplinary team working with older people at Jewish Care services. Rabbi Junik. “People come to us from every type of Judaism and from diverse backgrounds from all parts of the world. When a person moves to one of our care homes or Retirement Living apartments, it is a new beginning for them, even though they are at the later stage of their lives. My role is in listening to people and supporting them to connect with their own spirituality, be it religiously, culturally or emotionally and to enable their sense of belonging.” Living a meaningful, Jewish life in a warm, friendly environment is what draws many people to Jewish Care. Practicing traditions around the festivals and Shabbat can stimulate the senses and expressing spirituality can bring comfort and renewal for older people, this is especially true for those living with dementia where Jewish traditions can unlock positive memories from the past.
Food is central to connecting those we support with cultural traditions in Jewish life and care home and community centre chefs prepare countless bowls of chicken soup and Yom Tov meals and honey cakes and cheese cakes each year, working with the Kashrut authorities. Care home residents and those living in Retirement Living apartments observe festivals and Shabbat in the way they choose as well as marking significant dates such as Holocaust Memorial Day and Remembrance Sunday together, as part of the wider Jewish and local community. Ivor Perl BEM is a Holocaust survivor who lives at Jewish Care’s Selig Court Retirement Living apartments. As social distancing restrictions ease, the challenges for the people Norwood supports – many of whom are physically and emotionally vulnerable - are greater than ever. Covid has heightened feelings of anxiety and isolation, which means people are even more reliant on the safety net we provide for them, every step of the way. Enabling and empowering the people we support to live meaningful and fulfilling lives is at the heart of everything we do. Connecting individuals with their Jewish life and culture is an essential part of facilitating the full integration of people with learning disabilities and autism in the wider community. Our relationships with communities, synagogues and communal organisations allows the people we support to explore their personal connection with Judaism and fully contribute to their local communities. As communities open up again for most people, Norwood has reached out to synagogues to offer support to communities by promoting inclusivity for people of all abilities. Because your donations, however big or small, will collectively help to ensure we are able to provide quality, sustainable care that supports the needs of our community now and in the future. https://www.norwood.org.uk/rosh

What is the difference between life and death? 15 seconds. 40cm. 42mm.
Only one mile from Gaza and under constant threat of terror, Sderot’s residents have only 15 seconds to find shelter when the siren sounds. Makif Gutvirt Klali High School is too old and does not meet local safety requirements or protection from rockets. Imagine being a student in this school, knowing you only have a few seconds to try and get to safety in a building that is not safe. Sderot’s new, rocket-proof high school will include 40cm thick reinforced ceilings and walls and 42mm glazed windows. Becoming a place of safety – not fear. JNF UK is working to raise funds for this vital and ambitious project.
Please make our vision a reality. By supporting this appeal you can ensure the safety of the children of Sderot.

LSJS is a ‘thriving hub’ of Jewish educational excellence BY DAVID SAFFER London School of Jewish Studies has come through an unprecedented period for the education industry because of COVID-19 stronger as the premier provider of teacher training for the UK Jewish community. LSJS is rated ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED for its teacher training programmes, degree courses and a comprehensive adult education schedule. They are also renowned for Jewish Studies teachers’ conferences. Students can train as a Primary School teacher, Primary Jewish Studies teacher or a Secondary School teacher of Jewish Studies, Maths, Science, Modern Foreign Language (including Modern Hebrew) and other subjects at LSJS’ north London campus. LSJS personnel support students throughout training and encourage development post-qualification. Many graduates are in positions of senior leadership. LSJS offers a BA (Hons) Jewish Education and MA Jewish Education (on campus or distance education). And they run a wide range of courses from Bible and Hebrew Studies to Jewish culture, laws and personalities, philosophy, the Tanach and Midrash facilitated by inspiring teachers. There is also the opportunity to study modern Hebrew. Lessons in small classes are interactive for written and spoken activities designed to develop language skills from beginners upwards. LSJS’ journey started when Sir Moses Montefiore set about establishing a training college for religious leaders in 1841. Chief Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler opened Jews’ College in Finsbury Square, London 14 years later. A quarter of a century on and the College moved to Tavistock Square, close to University College, then to a purpose-built communal centre in Woburn House housing many organisations serving Anglo-Jewry in 1932. Surviving the Blitz, Chazzanut courses and teacher training programmes were soon offered and the College moved to Montague Place in 1954. Under Rabbi Dr Jonathan Sacks, later Chief Rabbi, the College relocated to its current building, Schaller House in Hendon. Jews’ College rebranded as London School of Jewish Studies in 1999 catering to the wider community and attracting world-class Rabbis and educators. Joanne Greenaway has been chief executive since 2019 responsible for delivering

LSJS’ vision and strategy. An experienced City lawyer in international disputes before focussing on the Jewish community, Joanne created the first female role within the Beth Din, helping people in difficult cases of Get refusal and finding new avenues to resolve cases. Joanne is passionate about Jewish education, Jewish law and contemporary issues. A graduate of the LSJS Susi Bradfield Educational Leadership programme, the Chief Rabbi’s Ma’ayan programme and JLC Gamechangers Senior Leadership programme, as well as Cambridge University, Joanne is a trustee of numerous communal organisations, has worked with schools across Europe and lectures widely in the community. The mum of four is dedicated to all aspects of her role. “I loved working in the city, but was always very passionate about Jewish learning and the community,” she recalled.
“I got to a point when I realised I had the skills from my professional world to help advance and grow the Jewish community. Like many people, I had my career alongside a Jewish community career but this became my 24/7. I love what I do.” LSJS continues to evolve as a ‘thriving hub’ of Jewish educational excellence. “We are a longstanding institution in the community and have always focused on educational leadership to develop teachers and leaders that the community needs, that are right for the time,” Joanne explained. “For us it’s all about Jewish continuity and passing Jewish values on through the right people. You need role models and teachers able to transmit learning in different ways. We work across the spectrum of Jewish schools, which is a source of great pride to us, and we have really good relationships with schools.” Joanne explained that LSJS provides different access points for students into

teaching. “Teaching is one of the most valuable things you can do so we try to attract the best people, wherever they are at,” she noted. “We provide routes for students with a degree to get qualified teacher status (PGCE is an optional extra) and they can do that based in our classroom or schools. “There are lots of people who want a career change, post-kids, as well as those who come straight out of university. We also provide Jewish Education degrees affiliated to Middlesex University to bring people into the profession and develop from there. For us it’s about having a prestigious career path, so people can develop areas of specialism and contribute to the community.” Joanne added, “We work with graduates who want to become teachers, older people who want to get into teaching (you are never too old!), teachers already in schools who haven’t qualified, for whatever reason, and people that want to be Jewish

We are set up to train teachers across a range of subjects. “Because we are relatively small we have a dedicated, specialist team who look after all our students to find the right route for them. At an interview we check paperwork according to government guidelines but it’s very much a personalised bespoke service”. “We believe in educational excellence and have one of the biggest Jewish libraries in the country specialising in Jewish education and Anglo Jewish history and stocked with rare and fascinating material.” In terms of tuition costs, it depends on circumstances. The coronavirus pandemic affected budgets. “The government has withdrawn a lot of funding, it happened during the pandemic, which was really upsetting,” explained Jo. “Teachers made the most unbelievable contribution during COVID-19 and the government has cut back but we are trying to make sure no one who wants to teach is prevented from doing so. There are bursaries and different ways of support for teachers. Anyone interested just needs to ask and we will advise them.” The world of getting into teaching has evolved over time and there are many teachers with experience who never formally qualified. LSJS has expertise here. “If you’ve been teaching for two years, but never qualified we can help through our Assessment Only route,” she explained. “More and more schools insist on qualifications but in the past, particularly for Jewish Studies, we have found that schools

have taken people without formal skills. Teachers have professional skills but we need to raise the bar across the board. Jewish Studies is not a second rate subject, it needs to be well taught, professionally and be respected.” LSJS offer a raft of courses but what makes a good teacher? “We look for a spark, somebody who has the potential to inspire young people,” Joanne said. “That is not a given, but our team are brilliant at developing and bringing that spark out of people. Particularly with Jewish Studies we want people that are relatable, role models and able to encourage questioning. That is really important, it’s not about passing on information. It’s about being able to encourage and deal with a young person’s questions. And the role model aspect is super important. And

Derek still in New York, but divorced, began to start dating again and created a profile on what was now JWed.com The name had been changed from Frumster.com to JWed.com in 2007, to meet the need of a growing market of Jewish singles who while not necessarily religiously observant, were equally marriage-minded and equally focused on marrying someone Jewish. Derek says he created a profile “more out of curiosity” - but was immediately taken by one specific profile - to whom he sent a message. Within 24 hours, he received a response from Devorah, a 46-yearold Londoner. She was also divorced and a single parent. They began communicating and found much in common. However, shortly thereafter, Derek felt he needed to take a break and self-suspended his JWed profile. Imagine his surprise 10 days later when Devorah sent a message to his work email! Devorah had tracked him down, knowing his place of work and full name. The email subject line was “Either You Will Think I Am Desperate, a Psycho, or Just a Tenacious Woman!” It was a bold move, and the perfect way to win Derek’s heart. “I loved her email, and we started communicating again,” Derek said. “This led to hundreds of emails, WhatsApp calls and videos and in December 2018 Derek flew to London for the weekend.” Many back-and-forth flights followed between and May 2019 they were engaged and after Derek permanently moved to London, they were married in the winter of 2019 and settled in Edgware. Shortly thereafter, Derek re-joined JWed. com as CMO. Derek says that while distance was of course a considerable challenge – he had not thought of leaving the U.S. after so many years – that it is important to bear in mind that a significant majority of JWed’s over 3,600 marriages took place between members who were out of city/state and even country. As he says from first-hand-experience, “JWed enables Jewish singles - whether from a major metropolitan city or from a small town, whether from across the street, or across the world, to meet one another, like never before. And while geography is admittedly a major factor in whom one communicates with, JWed has in fact always encouraged members to search way beyond their immediate location - where character, shared life goals, personality and other virtues, are so often far more important, than “just” location. As he says “If two people meet and find so much in common, both current and their plans for the future - geography, however challenging, can be overcome.” As Derek Saker says “You’re never too old to love and to want to be loved by another.”

We get one life… and it is precious
We are all painfully aware of how people living in care have suffered during the pandemic. Older people with hearing loss have been unable to communicate with their family and deprived of mental stimulation, whilst unable to understand what was being said to them by staff wearing masks. JDA’s pioneering service “Hearing Matters in Care” is reducing the isolation and loneliness of older care home residents helping them to understand, chat, laugh, access activities and be a part of their community.
With your help, we can do so much more. Please support JDA to bring about a culture change in our care homes – for our loved ones, and for everyone with hearing loss.

Dear Friends Just a short note before Rosh Hashanah to wish you and yours a very happy, healthy, successful New Year: and to thank you for what has been achieved since the Charity Extra campaign. Your donation has brought hope and comfort to so many. Just let me tell you about Susanna*, a referral since the Campaign. Susanna left home after her parent’s divorce, as she felt unsafe with both her mother and father. A family member took her in and contacted the Family Centre for support.
Excellent well-being programme
Providing high academic excellence
After discussion with Miriam, the Head of the Social Work Team, exploring Susanna’s early life experiences and her present needs, a programme of support, including therapy has been devised. Therapy sessions are being provided at a subsidised rate. Regular consultations to support the extended family now caring for Susanna. Early intervention and support will enable Susanna to emerge as a strong and emotionally healthy adult who is able to make good decisions and build positive relationships in the future. You have given us the ability to change lives. You should be so proud of what you have achieved.

WJC highlight antisemitic crimes including mocking of Anne Frank BY DAVID SAFFER Antisemitic incidents continue to rise around the world causing anxiety and concern to Jewish communities. World Jewish Congress has published its monthly review highlighting a snapshot of global hate crimes in August 2021. Shocking incidents included a talent show contestant mocking Anne Frank, hackers threatening to kill Jews, synagogues and Holocaust memorials being vandalised, and Jews being attacked. There are occasions when outrageous incidents have to be seen to be believed. And that was the case when a contestant on a popular talent show in Argentina mocked Anne Frank, singing about “women who don’t leave the house” in front of a background image of the teenager. Anne Frank House wrote in a statement, “Anne Frank did not stay at home because she was a submissive woman but had to hide to escape the persecution of the Nazi machinery.” The show’s host and producers apologised, saying the incident was an “unintentional mistake”, but the response from the DAIA Jewish umbrella group was extremely disappointing, calling the show’s choice of imagery “unfortunate and confusing”. In New South Wales, Australia, a leaflet compared COVID-19 social distancing restrictions to the treatment of Jews prior to the Holocaust. Darren Barks, New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies CEO, condemned the action as “disgraceful and reprehensible”. “A comparison cannot be made between what happened during World War II and the efforts of our officials to balance our health and economic needs while under threat from a worldwide pandemic,” he noted. “Comparisons such as this are offensive and hurtful to well-meaning Australians, given that 27,000 Australian soldiers lost their lives fighting that regime and cheapen the sacrifice of the millions of Jews and other victims murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators.” The Jewish Community of Vienna, meantime, reported its highest number of antisemitic incidents for 20 years. An IKG report found 562 recorded antisemitic incidents in the first half of 2021, slightly lower than the 2020 total for the year. Austria’s Ambassador of Israel, Mordechai D. Rodgold, said the report illustrated the importance to fight antisemitism, Oskar Deutsch, President of the Jewish community of Vienna, acknowledged that the results reflected reality. “We must continue the fight against antisemitism consistently and uncompromisingly,” commented Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the Austrian National Council,

There is more than one view OPINION PIECE BY ROBERT FESTENSTEIN We are now well into the ten days of penitence, known also as the Days of Awe. Now is the time to think about how we have behaved towards others. Have we said or done things which we now regret and how do we go about rectifying those wrongs. I know that I have been exasperated with the approach taken by others in the Jewish community and I am sure I have made comments which might have been too much. This though is understandable when the subject matter is so sensitive, such as anti-Semitism and Israel. What is not understandable is how so many activists in the community feel able to judge whether they should attend an event where the Israeli Ambassador is involved. For there to be a healthy discussion on any subject there needs to be a wide range of views, some of which are going to be unacceptable to some, yet this is what a democratic process is about. By refusing
to meet with the Ambassador or take part in any event where she is present is as petty as it is irresponsible. Our community is becoming more fractured and so the need for open dialogue is more urgent than ever. Sadly, the atmosphere in so many debates now involve regular attacks on individuals and sometimes that appears all they are about. Even more sadly some of our communal leaders have chosen to go down this path as well. The result is that some of those who describe
Issues and people are complex and this needs to be understood by those demanding no-platforms and bans for those they don’t want to hear.
Le Pen charged with inciting antisemitism BY SIMCHA ABIR French far-right party National Front (now National Rally) founder Jean-Marie Le Pen has been charged with ‘inciting antisemitic hatred’. Le Pen reportedly denounced a number of French celebrities who disagreed with his political views including Jewish singer and actor Patrick Bruel, in a 2014 video on the Party’s website. Jean-Marie Le Pen It is understood Frederic Joachim, Le Pen’s lawyer, wants charges dismissed as they are based on a phrase taken out of context, Le Pen, who denies allegations, has faced trial before for antisemitism-related comments. France’s Court of Cassation upheld a conviction for Holocaust denial after Le Pen said the Holocaust was “a detail” of World War II in 2018. His daughter, National Front leader Marine Le Pen, expelled him from the Party. “Le Pen’s record speaks for itself,” commented a Campaign Against Antisemitism spokesperson.
themselves as being progressive refuse to attend a meeting with the representative of the State of Israel. Occasionally a course of conduct is so ridiculous that it is indefensible. This is one such example. Tzipi Hotoveley speaks on behalf of the State of Israel not on her own account. For those who claim that they cannot go near the Ambassador because of comments made by her prior to her appointment are failing to grasp the difference between the office
and the office holder. This simple but vital distinction which is lost on her critics is unfortunately symptomatic of the lack of understanding of so many issues in the Jewish community. Not every issue involves a simple good or bad outcome in the same way that not every individual is one-dimensional in their thinking. Issues and people are complex and this needs to be understood by those demanding no-platforms and bans for those they don’t want to hear. Now surely is the time for some self-reflection on this behaviour since if it continues the broad consensus on so many issues which has lasted for so long will fall away, and with it the remaining semblance of communal unity and our ability to speak with one voice. Robert Festenstein is a practising solicitor and has been the principal of his Salford based firm for over 20 years. He has fought BDS motions to the Court of Appeal and is President of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester which serves to protect and defend the democratic State of Israel.

“His prominence in French public life is a stain on the country and even ambitious politicians on the far-right seek to distance themselves from him and his odious views. We shall be watching the trial with interest.” President Macron condemned antisemitism to the American Jewish Committee last June. Praising contributions of French Jews, he noted at the time, “Antisemitism PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK is, as it has always been, an unacceptable, unjustifiable, menace, in the face of which we must relentlessly mobilise all our energies,”. Macron called on France to adopt the International Definition of Antisemitism although the definition alone was “not enough”. The French leader noted a network of investigators and magistrates to provide care for victims of hate crimes and be more efficiency in dealing with investigations. Outlining how France was tackling online hate through its watchdog, Macron said Holocaust education was “at the heart” of the fight against antisemitism.”

South’s rebid of three no trump promised a balanced hand of around 25/26 high-card points. Naturally, West led the five of spades to East’s king and declarer paused to think. It was a pity that the heart suit was blocked, otherwise he would have nine top tricks. As there was no way to force an entry to dummy, declarer sought the help of an opponent. He ducked the king of spades and took the spade continuation with the ace. Next he cashed his club and heart winners. Now came the card West was dreading, the jack of spades. If West allowed the jack of spades to win, that would have been declarer’s ninth trick. At the table he took the queen of spades and cashed two long spade tricks. Declarer threw low diamonds from both his hand and dummy. West now had the alternative of leading a heart to dummy’s ace or a diamond into declarer’s ace-queen. Either way, declarer had nine tricks.

Join AJEX for the annual remembrance ceremony and parade AJEX is delighted to announce they are planning the 2021 Annual Remembrance Ceremony and Parade as an in-person event on Sunday 21st November at The Cenotaph. The event will welcome for the first time a contingent of Jewish Army cadets from the newly formed JFS Combined Cadet Force. The AJEX Annual Remembrance Ceremony and Parade is an opportunity to honour and remember the thousands of Jewish Servicemen and women who fought and served for our freedom. AJEX are proud of their service, strength and resilience, which has resonance today. A major event in the Jewish calendar AJEX invites marchers to register to take part and invites the whole community to save the date to come and support those marching, honouring all who gave their lives for our freedom. AJEX is also encouraging the family of veterans to join the parade and wear their relative’s medals with pride. This will demonstrate the baton of Remembrance being passed through the generations. AJEX National Chairman Mike Bluestone commented: “It is our duty to always remember the sacrifice that Jewish men

since the first wreath was laid at the Cenotaph by Jewish Servicemen. We look forward to parading in November and seeing as many of the community as possible join us to paricipate and support”. AJEX is marking Remembrance 2021 in other ways too, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to Jewish veterans and serving community members - passing the legacy onto the next generation. For primary and secondary schools in-person or online Q&A’s with Veterans can be booked. The United Synagogue is providing food parcels for hundreds of people this Rosh Hashanah. The initiative is for Jewish families are struggling with the financial impact of the Covid-19 crisis.
The charity has been supporting over 100 households weekly since Pesach 2020, as more and more families reached out to the US to ask for support during the pandemic. That figure has now risen to more than 120 households. The majority of families

are spread over Essex, Hertfordshire and North and north West London. Michelle Minsky, US Chesed head, said, “Despite lockdown easing, the challenges posed by the pandemic don’t seem to be going away for many of our members who are still struggling financially. With the help of many wonderful synagogue volunteers over the past two weeks we have been able to give out honey cakes to people in need across the community including those who are isolated, vulnerable or have sadly lost someone “ Michelle added that it is essential the US connects people with their community and help them feel included even if they can’t attend shul services. The food parcels contain fresh items such as bread, milk, cheese, fruit and vegetables, cupboard tinned goods, tea, coffee, pasta, cereal and household items including toiletries. The US has spent over £200,000 supporting vulnerable families over the course of the pandemic. The US over Rosh Hashanah has also provided each family with honey cake and a jar of honey. Through its network of synagogues, the charity has distributed over 2,100 households this year.

Siyum on Masechet Sukka at The Aviv A memorable Siyum was held in The Aviv Restaurant in Edgware by members of the Merkaz Daf Yomi Shiur upon the recent completion of Masechet Sukka. Close to 50 people gathered together from different communities within London to jointly celebrate this occasion. Whilst there are a plethora of Shiurim available for Lomdei Hadaf, this particular group have been united through the online Chabura facilitated by Merkaz Daf Yomi, based in Ramat Bet Shemesh whose daily Shiur is delivered by the now world-renowned Maggid Shiur, Reb Eli Stefansky. Some listeners joined the Shiur before Meseches Brochos at the beginning of the 14th Daf Yomi cycle; others more recently. Many were made aware of the Shiur through the popular Free Gemora Giveaway that has been running prior to the start of each new Mesechta, a project sponsored by many of the global MDY participants. (For details of the next promotion, visit Joinmdy.com) Encouraged by the daily doses of Chizzuk from Reb Eli, there is a high retention rate of new Lomdim and an increasingly growing audience from around the globe. Participants in the Shiur are inspired and entertained by the dynamic nature of the Shiur with its relatable style, clear charts as well as hands-on demonstrations of the more technical sugyos;
Its global audience including Talmidei Chachomim of note as well as many beginners, write in and share comments on the sugyos, as well as many who write in to share their past challenges with their learning commitments and their newfound successes as they journey through Shas together with MDY. The Shiur is easily accessible through many online mediums including live on Zoom, TorahAnytime, All Daf and through its own app. The Siyum is an occasion for the many Lomdim to meet up in person and share together the unique atmosphere and camaraderie that the Shiur fosters.. Emcee of the evening was Ari Davis from Golders Green, who ran the evening’s programme, introducing the speakers, the Mesayem and also shared plans to develop a London-based Hub to facilitate more in-person learning and meet-ups to complement the Shiur. Ari also shared clips of his time spent at the MDY Hub in Bet Shemesh where he was introduced to the Maggid Shiur, the technical team, and Board who have overseen the exponential growth MDY has had especially since the beginning of the new cycle and the Covid lockdowns. The Mesayem was Michael Kashi from Hendon who expertly delivered the last lines of the Mesechta and meaningfully

connected some lessons learned from the Gemara to his childhood experiences, having grown up in Iraq during the Saddam Hussein regime. Rabbi Alex Chapper, Rov of Borehamwood Shul, and a Loimed of the MDY programme delivered an uplifting speech linking together the topics of Daf Yomi, Parshas Nitzovim and the proximity to the yaahrzeit of the Chafetz Chaim. The opening Mishna of Meseches Beitza was delivered by David Goldberg.
The ambient location and high-class, efficient catering enabled all to enjoy a wonderful evening celebrating the past mesechta, meeting new and old contacts as well as beginning the next Mesechta in the Daf Yomi journey. From the front line…
May our next year be sweeter than the last. Please!
BY JACQUELINE CURZON You know what it's like: you're finally going out. You've booked a babysitter, found a long forgotten dress that still fits, you dash to the mirror for 2 minutes to put on an improved face and straighten your wonky sheitel. Okay, I'm talking here about the average Jewish housewife, with 5 kids and no free time. (Any gentlemen who would like to self-identify with me, just pop on your pearls.) Done! Then you go out to a much awaited simcha, reach for your main course at the famed Yoni Rothan's Diner [yup, you missed the entrees because of your toddler's tantrums as you tried to leave] when your phone trills and buzzes loudly at 11pm (I forgot to put it on silent. So, go on then - show me someone who's perfect?) to say the 'kids are still up,' 'the washing machine is flooding the kitchen,' 'the dog has escaped,' or 'the babysitter left' (....two hours ago)! but mercifully not all on the same night. We've added 'the paintpot through glass door,' 'chair versus oven door,' 'microwave fire, defrosting bread,' 'lost child,' 'newly found free kitten' and so forth. All perfectly normal of course, but the hijinks don't end here. Our Thursday night invariably includes the making of the renowned [insert your name here] delicious chicken soup. Like all busy mums under pressure to keep up, she uses the pressure cooker to take the pressure off. Ours is a rather gargantuan steel version - a busy mum's best f(r)i(e)nd:- an impressive 18 litre industrial construction, and we'd never had a problem with it. The resultant chicken soup is quickly rendered fantastic, served and enjoyed, regardless of whether partaken in the kitchen, the dining room, the library or the doghouse. But it really is not ideal when served directly across the kitchen floor. There was about an inch of boiling hot soup lying innocently over the floor, with steam wafting around the house, altogether making it an onerous - if olfactory pleasant - task to remove it. (If you think cleaning up a broken egg is a nightmare, try a pot of jewish penicillin). Anyway I dithered as to whether I should run back to do the job myself, or stay at my friend's 60th birthday tea. It was a tough call, but the barbecued salmon and glittery party hats won the day, and I returned home later to find the mess pretty much cleared up. (I gather it was a really dreadful job!!) How had it gone so wrong? When the pressure valve had popped up, screaming with all its strength, nobody came to the rescue, and so the pot finally blew its top. Now, my interest in 'News from the North' has flagged up quite a few stories. Nicola Sturgeon is back in the news, or rather her younger sister is. Gillian Sturgeon (46) was arrested recently over a domestic incident, although the mother of two has since been

released with an undertaking to appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court. This followed on from a previous incident only a few weeks earlier, where she was challenged for not wearing a mask on a Glasgow to London train. She claimed she was only unmasked whilst eating, but there must have been more to the story. Quite the story teller, I think. A man of 27 has been charged over the death of 31-year old Fawziyah Javed, a young woman who fell 800 feet off a Scottish hill to her death. Ms Javed, who was married only last December and was believed to be pregnant, had belatedly celebrated her wedding with a party just days before. She fell from the top of Arthur's Seat, in Edinburgh, and sadly could not be saved. Anwar Kashif (27), her husband, is helping police with their enquiries. DialaDeal Scotland Ltd has been fined £150,000 for making nuisance calls in a green energy scam. The Glasgow based company made calls marketing funds for schemes that did not exist, including boiler replacement and loft insulation. More than 550,000 unsolicited calls were made over a 7-month period, with 500 complaints. Dawn Swift (41) a pub landlady, was assaulted in a car park by a 13-strong mob before pulling out a taser to scare them off. She didn’t discharge the weapon but was still charged over the incident in August last year. She admitted to having a taser, brandishing it and then putting it in the car's glove compartment. Swift has been warned that she could be jailed, as guidelines suggest a starting point for the court's consideration is a custodial sentence. This reaction by the CPS is surely disproportionate, as she could hardly fight off the equivalent of a football team with her fists or her handbag, and whilst the taser was an unexpected - if illegal - choice of defensive weapon, in the circumstances it was likely both fortuitous she had it, and was effective. If the punishment is indeed to fit the crime, what about the crime committed
by the 13 youths attacking her, some of whom may have had previous convictions? They too were guilty of offences, but sadly their predatory behaviour has obviously paid off in this case. Jobs advertised on a government website are promising nearly 10% in salary increases for those living within the M25 and working in London, regardless of whether office based or home based. So, you'll be offered an uplift if you work in London, but if you live in London and work outside the M25, you won't get it, even though you're on much lower pay, travelling for hours to be a good egg and getting to your office. There is already a huge disparity between salaries in the capital and the surrounding environs where those out of district are struggling constantly. Why are so many choosing the home-working option? Could be several reasons; lack of professional oversight means some can stay at home and do 'less than' a day's work; some may enjoy the flexibility of start times and attendant travel savings; others may truly be anxious about covid transmission. Dr James Hiddleston wrote [Telegraph, 5th September] 'Zero Covid is an illusion, as New Zealand is finding out.' We know since Delta that we may just have to live with covid and develop a strategy for dealing with it. Double vaccinations will help prevent serious illnesses and reduce morbidity, but essentially everyone is likely to catch it. However mitigating measures should include: throwing masks away, except in hospitals and extremely crowded places; lifting travel bans for fully vaccinated people; aiming to bring hospital backlogs under control within 2 years; reinstating f2f GP consultations and finally, making civil servants go back to work and offices. We need to reclaim our lives. Well said, Doc! From docs to dames now. Dame Jenni Murray, the former presenter of Woman's Hour, has spoken out about the salary excess of presenters in the BBC. Dame Jenni, who was paid £100,000 per year has been slamming other presenters earning variously between £245,000 (Sarah Montague), up to £425,000 (Huw Edwards). Graham Norton is on a staggering £4 million, whilst her successor, Emma Barnett, is on £245k. One has to ask if in such times of financial hardship, it's absolutely necessary to pay so much to presenters on the tv and radio for doing what is essentially a regular day job, albeit generally quite fun and delivered in a lilting Welsh accent, or with quirky humour. {Bet I could do it.} Murray was apparently paid pro rata for 2 ½ days a week, although one wonders if that was 200k down to 100k for pro rata? Barnett's salary is based on 0.8 fte on Woman's Hour, plus Newsnight and other BBC work. Nice work if you can get it. Indeed - are you still wondering why they are chasing you for your licence fee?
Now finally. In case you're wondering what a bashed (only slightly!) and trashed (nu, seriously?) oven door looks like? Beautiful, definitely- - for a few hours, then slowly it unwinds like a DNA helix, crashing out in a glittery glassworks display before reluctantly resting on the floor. So: yes, it IS absolutely trashed, (not to mention dangerous, irresponsible, unbelievable, anti-social, manufacturer sue-able or even clockwatching ticktocking. Whoa - stop there. There are much worse problems in sight….. it's almost yomtov, the whole family is coming [let's pretend] and you forgot some of the shopping, including getting a cake and the mandatory fish head) but look on the bright side. Firstly, Uncle Dov is vegetarian and watching his weight. Secondly, it was an accident and t'G no-one got hurt. Thirdly and seriously, if your oven were actually on, and happily running at a steady 220°Celsius ……, well I take no liability for having said 'oven doors were beautiful and safe.' I can only speak for smashing cold ovens though, 'coz I'm from up north - we wear gloves and scarves at home. We need them when the generator fails. And finally, I'd like to have a little word in your ear now about eggs. On motzei shabbat it's my favourite treat to have well done cheesy scrambled eggs on toasted cholla. Absolutely divine! So when eggs appeared in the media menu, I was all ears and eyes. However the story was not about cracking eggs, but preserving eggs - biological eggs. Women will now be able to freeze their eggs for up to 55 years, under new government plans to give people greater choice on when to start a family. The current DHEA legislation states such genetic material can only be stored for a maximum of 10 years; and could be stored for 55 years if there is a specific requirement, such as the woman being at risk of infertility or premature menopause. Ministers have proposed that storage limits should no longer be governed by medical need. Well, I just wonder why any woman, let's say in their twenties and thirties (when quality is at its best), would want to freeze her eggs with a mindset that she might come back 30, 40 or 50 years later to take them on an antenatal journey. To the best of my knowledge there aren't many 75-year-old new mums in the world, and if there were, they'd need to live to 120 to see the child grow up. However, as I always do my homework, I read Daljinder Kaur, from India, was believed to be over 70 years old, when she gave birth in 2016. The baby was the first for Kaur and her 79-year-old husband, Mohinder Singh Gill, after nearly 50 years of marriage. Well, there you go. It's possible Love Jacqueline x

Trailblazer Tzipi to complete her historic appointment Jewish Weekly journalist David Saffer caught up with Israel’s Ambassador to the UK Tzipi Hotovely to overview her first 12 months in the post. In a wide-ranging interview, Israel’s emissary discussed her historic posting, COVID-19 travel frustrations, global and domestic issues and Rosh Hashanah.
Jewish Weekly journalist David Saffer discusses all things Israel with Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely
Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely is a political trailblazer determined to make a lasting impact in her three-year posting at the Israeli Embassy. Taking time out of a hectic schedule, Israel’s UK emissary has quashed media rumours that Prime Minister Naftali Bennett would recall her as she was a political ally of former leader Benjamin Netanyahu. Indeed, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has advised her to ignore the media “spin”. “It’s official, the Foreign Minister told me he did not like the spin in the news about changing the ambassador in Israel,” she said. “He has trust in the work we are doing.” Lapid’s backing shows the strength of Israeli democracy that a Netanyahu ‘ally’ is in such a highly held post. “Since Israel has been established in 1948, because of our vibrant democracy different governments have appointed dozens of diplomats,” Ambassador Hotovely explained. “We are civil servants once we take a position. When I agreed to
be ambassador I took my politician’s suit off to wear a diplomatic one. I represent my country, the State of Israel and the Israeli government.” She added, “Many times in our history where a political appointee was doing their job the government has changed. People who made the appointment are no longer in government. The Israeli system is very clear, once you become an ambassador, you are ambassador for the term. Mine is three years, I have two more years to be here.” Hotovely is Israel’s first female ambassador to the UK and savvy enough to handle political pressures the post demands. But how notable is it historically? “It’s important to see the diverse face of Israel,” Ambassador Hotovely replied. “If you only have male ambassadors half the population in Israel are not being represented for such an important position to the Court of St James’s. It is important women get these positions in the Foreign Ministry. Former Prime Minister Golda Meir was Ambassador to the Soviet
Union, Aliza Bib-Noun is Ambassador in Paris and now London has changed. I’m the first here but don’t want to be the last. I hope many women follow and represent Israel.” The biggest challenge of the past 12 months has been the coronavirus pandemic. Whilst global restrictions have eased in terms of movement, travel to Israel has been severely impacted. Hopes were high the summer months would see a return to tourism, alas that has not been the case. Presently, each country determines its own rules, but travel is possible. UK citizens wishing to travel should check the Israel embassy and UK government websites. “I can only tell Jewish Weekly readers how sorry I am for the last year,”
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Ambassador Hotovely said. “Our motivations were health, we want everyone to be safe. Nobody wanted to not allow Jews into Israel. I share the pain of Jewish communities that wanted to visit and am very sympathetic. We are still dealing with rising numbers of COVID-19 and people getting the virus. I can’t give a date but there will be good news from Israel. The State of Israel wants Jewish communities to travel back and forth because Israel is a second home for many people here in UK.” A main talking point internationally this past year has been Israel’s progress in relations with Arab nations and the landmark US-brokered Abraham Accords with the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Bahrain, Sudan and Oman. The UK will officially acknowledge this at a ceremony in Parliament. How beneficial has this been for Israel’s standing? “It’s a new chapter between Israel and the Arab world, I’m very excited about this,” said Ambassador Hotovely. “This historic agreement is not just a political declaration between leaders, it’s about war and peace between people. It will be beneficial in business, tourism and other areas for us all.” She added, “There is a new trend in the region, which says Israel is an asset. Israel is here to stay and can cooperate in many fields. Countries that signed the accords realise this is just the beginning. The accords will inspire more people in the region, they want to see prosperity and not go back to the dark ages.” There is growing positivity in Middle East but the specter of Iran still looms large. “Iran is not interested in prosperity or peace and is a main issue on my agenda,” explained Ambassador Hotovely. “We have to fight the idea that Iran will accomplish its dreams about nuclear weapons. “The Raissi regime is not willing to compromise on anything. Iran continues to work on its program to destabilse the region. We see international reports where Iran stands and at the moment the western leadership is not stopping it. We need to be proactive to stop Iran.” Regarding the new reality of dealing with the Taliban in Afghanistan, Ambassador Hotovely spoke about the human tragedy, especially for women. “We have to raise our voice,” she said.
The State of Israel wants Jewish communities to travel back and forth because Israel is a second home for many people here in UK.
15 SEPTEMBER 2021 “Our representative in Geneva has said very clearly that the international community must do everything to make sure women don’t go back to the dark ages, but to be comfortable and independent. Women everywhere deserve this. Our main concern is on a human rights level. Israel is part of international efforts to make sure people can leave safely. Israel backs the United Nations on this.” Israel’s conflict with the Palestinians is ongoing and last May saw the IDF’s Operation Guardian of the Walls in response to rocket attacks. Peace in the Middle East remains on the agenda, but sadly it seems that Israeli stateswoman Golda Meir’s longstanding quote still rings true. She famous said, “When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons. Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.” Tragically Border Police Staff Sergeant Barel Hadaria Shmueli lost his life at the Gaza border last month. How difficult is it for IDF soldiers to make split second decisions regarding safety and security? “The personal tragedy of the solider we lost is something all of Israel has been mourning,” said Ambassador Hotovely. “Every Israeli, their heart is broken, we are very sensitive to the loss of life, but also because he was shot at point blank range by a terrorist. This is what has made everyone so shocked.” She added, “I trust our soldiers, this is what the IDF has dealt with for years. We are dealing with people who do not have our values, a terror organisation that is not interested in peace or co-existence. They only want to eliminate Israel from the Middle East map. Ambassador Hotovely We care about hosts HaTanach finalists the people, but at the embassy we are fighting terrorism. “We are trying to do our best to prevent a military operation but whenever terrorists attack our people, soldiers and communities, Israel has to act. It’s very clear with Hamas. The only way we can operate is to get to a point where it feels like it does not pay off to attack Israel. And in order to do that we need to fight. At the moment I can’t be too optimistic about the Israel-Gaza border.” For all the challenges of Hamas and other terror groups there are examples of coexistence projects that take place in Israel “This is one of the glorious achievements of the State of Israel,” Ambassador Hotovely said. “Since Israel was established in 1948, we called on our neighbours to have peace with us and it

was clear Israeli-Arabs would be part of the way the country works. Look at our government, it has an Arab party as part of the coalition. This is something new for many Israelis. To have a better future we must continue work on this area. It’s a matter of education, projects on democratic values and where we stand as a society.” Domestically, with COVID-19 measures relenting Ambassador Hotovely has been visiting communities across all Jewish affiliations. Aside from meeting schools, various groups and bodies around London, Israel’s emissary has been to Scotland and plans are afoot to visit

job is to build a bridge. I want all Jews to feel welcome in their homeland.” Ambassador Hotovely witnessed a surge in antisemitism here in the UK during the escalation of violence in Gaza a few months ago. Her own family was shocked at vehement racist abuse shouted from cars draped with Palestinian flags through Jewish neighborhoods including where she resides. Boris Johnson described video footage as “shameful racism”, but the conflict resulted in outrage from sections of the British media including BBC’s Newsnight.

other cities around the UK. “I have met ultra-orthodox Jews, liberal and people that see themselves affiliated with the United Synagogue but for me the most important thing is every Jew is connected to Israel,” she explained. “My

FEATURE 59 Israel’s emissary has not changed her viewpoint on a two-state solution. “I believe in peace, I don’t believe in failed solutions, I believe in practical, pragmatic solutions,” she said. Ambassador Hotovely met The Lord Mann, who serves as an advisor to the government on antisemitism and welcomed his standing. “One of the smart things I heard is that we need to address modern problems,” she said. “The most important thing is to teach modern antisemitism. Some people think antisemitism is something that belongs to the past. This is not a correct perception. Antisemitism is a global issue that has to be fought.” To conclude, Israel’s emissary wished Jewish communities a Chag Sameach. But how would she celebrate Rosh Hashanah. “We are following a nice tradition where I’ll be hosting people here at the embassy,” Ambassador Hotovely said. “Last year was not possible with COVID-19 but we will be doing the traditional things including dipping apple in the honey and singing Rosh Hashonah songs. It will be lovely. I’m really looking forward to it.” The Hotovely’s were set to attend services at the nearest synagogue before performing tashlich. “We are going to a proper river not next to a small pool as we do in Israel,” she quipped. “I love tashlich, it’s a beautiful symbolic minhag.” When it comes to the Jewish new year, Israel’s emissary recalled one of her favourite Israeli musicians and poets, Naomi Shemer, famed for Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold) and especially her B’Rosh Hashanah song. “Naomi said we should pray that the new year will be beautiful and different, and after everything we have been through, we want next year to be different,” Ambassador Hotovely said. “In the spirit of the holiday we want to bring peace, freedom and health both in Israel and the UK. I also pray the doors of Israel will be open to our friends who wish to visit and every Jew that wants to return to different parts of the country.” Israel’s emissary is beginning to make a mark during a three-year stay. No journalist will underestimate her as an advocate for the State of Israel. Above all though, she is looking forward to a return to travel and welcoming delegations which is a major part of her work. (Since this interview the Israel Ministry of Tourism has announced it is to resume a tourist pilot program from September 19th for groups of five to thirty people from “green, yellow and orange” countries. Tourists must have proof of a second Israel Ministry of Health-recognised vaccination in the last six months or receipt of a third vaccination to qualify. Tourists must present a negative PCR test up to 72 hours before arrival and undergo PCR and serological tests at Ben Gurion Airport. It is hoped individual tourists will be allowed into Israel soon but it depends on morbidity rates in Israel and globally.)

Roasted Pumpkin, Mushroom and Black Truffle Oil Soup The drizzle of black truffle oil adds a touch of luxury to this tasty winter warming soup. Black truffle oil is best used sparingly for maximum impact and mixed with this combination of pumpkin squash, mushrooms and chestnuts it makes an usual soup that you will want to make time and time again.
A delicious recipe for Succot from Denise Phillips For more recipes and inspiration visit my website: www.jewishcookery.com
Preparation Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 45 minutes Serves: 8-10 people Ingredients 1.5 kg pumpkin – peeled, seeds removed and cut into large chunks 1 200g packet vacuum packed peeled chestnuts – reserve 2 tablespoons for garnish 2 tablespoons olive oil ~ 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 large onions – peeled and chopped 3 cloves garlic – peeled and chopped 150g chestnut or button mushrooms – wiped and sliced ~ 2 litres vegetable or chicken stock 1 tin 400g chestnut puree Salt and freshly ground black pepper To serve: 1 teaspoon Black truffle oil Roasted chestnuts – roughly chopped Sprigs of fresh parsley Method - For the Base 1) Preheat the oven to 200 C/ 400 F/ gas mark 6. 2) Place the pumpkin and chestnut pieces onto an oven tray lined with baking parchment paper. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons olive oil. 3) Roast for about 20 minutes or until just tender. 4) Heat the second batch of olive oil in a deep saucepan. Sauté the onions, garlic and mushrooms for 3- 4 minutes.
Entertaining at Succot BY DENISE PHILIPS It is customary to welcome the community and guests to dine in the succah, better known as ushpizim (Aramaic for guests). We reflect on inclusion and symbolically invite one of ‘seven revered men of Israel’ to enjoy a meal in the succah house; Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph and King David. The inspiration for hospitality to guests goes back to our first patriarch, and the first guest honoured, Abraham. He would sit outside waiting for the opportunity to invite dusty wayfarers into the shade of his tent, and then run to prepare a meal of the choicest ingredients. So let me share some useful tips for entertaining during this time. Essentially, the best foods to eat in a succah should be easily transportable from the kitchen. Soup of all flavours is typical as it normally quite cold and this provides a warming start to the meal. Butternut squash with coconut milk, carrot and roasted onion, sweet potato and chickpea, ‘creamy’ celeriac soup with toasted hazelnuts, roasted pumpkin with truffle oil are some of my favourites. A mezze platter of hummus, olives, dips and crudites, sun dried tomatoes, falafel and bourekas is also a great way to commence the feasting. Make individual portions or recipes that are easy to spoon out for example salmon crumble,
stuffed peppers, stuffed courgettes, vegetable bakes, stews, goulash, kugels and hotpots. Salads with roasted vegetables, tomatoes, grains like quinoa, barley, wheat, cous cous and bulghur wheat are a good way to connect with the seasonal harvest at this time. And for dessert stuffed apples, tray bakes that can be easily cut up, cakes with vegetables such as carrots, courgette, beetroot and pumpkin are a great way to link the bounty of the farm produce with something sweet. Crumbles with pears, apples, rhubarb and blackberries are delicious combinations. I like to have a trestle table in my living room which is near the outside door leading into the succah and this gives me space to display and serve the meal. Make sure you have a few trays for serving, lots of napkins for spillages and hopefully no rain! Chag Sameach!
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
5) Add the stock, roasted pumpkin, roasted chestnuts and chestnut puree. Bring the mixture to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes for the flavours to merge. 6) Transfer the soup to a food processor and blend until smooth. Return to the pan and heat until hot. 7) Taste and season accordingly. To serve the stylish way: Divide the soup into 10 serving bowls. Garnish with a few drops of black truffle oil, the reserved roasted chopped chestnuts and a sprig of fresh parsley.

Motoring: An electric first for Jewish Weekly Our travel expert, and one time Lotus Cars PR Manager Malcolm Ginsberg has in the past been somewhat sceptical regarding electric cars. Not any longer!. This is his review of the Kia e-Niro. I had not road tested an electric car to date, and rather wary of what is undoubtedly the power of the future. A short day was managed with a Tesla from the Brent Cross showroom and I spent a couple of hours with the Mazda MX-30, very impressed with both but as a flat dweller my main concern was the problem of charging. My fears were forgotten. The Kia e-Niro is a well-developed comfortable small SUV, very practical for the British roads. It comes with the usual Kia seven-year/100,000 warranty, transferable. Priced at £39,395 the test car is not cheap but propels you into another world of motoring. The whole package is beautifully engineered and a credit to its country of origin (Korea). As things stand there are no commercial charging points within one mile, or walking distance of my Edgware abode, but a local Waitrose had a couple of fast chargers in its car park. Plugging into a simple three-pin point at a close by friendly neighbour provided a simple solution to the problem. Overnight the car was ready the following morning. The electric input point is at the front, a sprung door allowing access to the plug options. Charging was overnight into a standard three pin plug. The car comes with two alternative charging cables – Type 1, a 3-pin AC unit single-phase charging up to 2.3kW and Type 2, also AC single-phase but charging up to 7.2 kW. Based on the average cost of standard electricity in the UK in 2020 a very rough estimate for a 0-100% charge of an e-Niro 64kWh x 17.2 pence per kWh = £11. With the case of my neighbour the estimated cost when charging from 61% to 100% on a three-pin charger would be between £4 and £5. He refused payment. Householders are now offering the facility on a proper payment basis. Look out for signs. The big question is range. According to Kia this can be up to 380 miles if driven around town, or 100 miles less on a run. In any event what you have got left in the tank (if that is the right word) is very clearly seen on the front screen. As electric cars become more common so will charging points, particularly for

pubs and restaurants with car parks. This 64kWh version (it’s all a new language) offers 0-60 in a sports saloon 7.5sec, but is sensibly limited to 100mph top speed. There is no point in using up a lot of power illegally. The mileage remaining can be easily seen. The official description calls it a onegear car and that is what it is. Just put your foot down if you want to go quicker, rather like a fairground dodgem. It is true that some of the more exotic electric cars have astonishing performance but the e-Niro is no slouch and will hold its own in a traffic light GP.

The car is front-wheel drive and the batteries are located under the floor for a low centre of gravity, improving the handling, which is best described as ‘neat’ in the wet. The e-Niro sticks to the road. As far as the ride is concerned it is nicely soft without being too half-hearted and perhaps causing car sickness with some passengers. As with all Kia cars it comes as a complete package, very comprehensively kitted out with some interesting features. Only the centre seat in the back is not heated and the driver’s seat slides back automatically as you open the door. It is eight-way adjustable. Also heated is the steering wheel. To go into reverse you twist a rotary selector on the central console which also controls other functions. A rotary control, otherwise things are normal. Advanced active safety technologies include Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection (FCA), Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with stop and go, Driver Attention Warning (DAW) and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS). A 10.25 inch touchscreen display dominates the centre console, which includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, as well as Bluetooth with music streaming. The DAB radio includes MP3 compatibility, steering wheel controls and six-speakers. You get a wireless self-charging mobile phone position and two USB plugs in the front, but strangely none in the back. A reversing camera is integrated together with a warning system which also works at the front. The car sits on 17 inch alloy wheels and gives a good ride. What is interesting is filling it up with five people. Yes, it might be a little slower but there is no under the bonnet rumble as you pull away. And they all ask about the engine and how far will it go before recharging? That was never the case with petrol and diesel cars.

AJEX given the honour of saying kaddish at commemorative events addenda panel of the Memorial to the Missing, 1935-45 in Brookwood Military Cemetery after research by AJEX archivist Martin Sugarman. Martin, a SWW2LN supporter, was unable to attend this year’s ceremony, but sent a message as did Ambassador Gershon Gan, a cousin of Amiram Shohet who disappeared on the operation. The event also remembered British Jewish agents of F (French) Section, SOE
Captain Lionel Lee MC (see panel below). Captain Lionel Lee MC, service number 235209, is commemorated on panel 1, column 2 of the Memorial to the Missing 1939-45 at Brookwood. In addition to his Military Cross, Lee was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government. Both Operation Boatswain and Captain Lee are remembered at the gathering of the Brookwood Last Post Association.

AJEX co-chairman Mike Bluestone and Brian Bloom attended two special events at Brookwood Military Cemetery where fallen servicemen and women from all faiths are remembered. The Secret World War 2 Learning Network was holding its fifth annual commemorative ceremony, the Last Post Association, a monthly gathering. Both events were also attended by the Armed Forces together with the Defence Attaché and Naval Attache from the Embassy of Israel. The cemetery is looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Bluestone recited Kaddish at both events and gave a short explanation to attendees on Aramaic, explaining it was the most common spoken language of Jews at the time to ensure the congregation could appreciate with the meaningful prayer. Bloom was Standard bearer and presented the new AJEX National Standard. Wreaths were laid at both ceremonies on behalf of Bluestone for AJEX together with representatives for The SWW2LN, Embassy of Israel and the IDF. The main theme of the commemoration was the lost men of Operation Boatswain (known in Israel as The 23 Who Went Down With The Ship) in the 80th anniversary year of the ill-fated SOE/Palmach mission in 1941. The names of the 23 were added to the

Lionel Lee was born 24th June 1917 in Hackney, east London, the son of Levy and Mrs Lee. He gained a B.A. (hons) degree from the University of London and at the commencement of his SOE service was living at 10 Nightingale Road, Clapham, London SW12 with his wife, Lilian. Lionel was studying to become a language teacher, presumably having a complete command of French. Before volunteering for SOE, he joined the Royal Armoured Corps and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May 1942. Lionel transferred at his own request to F (French) Section of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and was taken on strength from June 1942 when he began training at Special Training School, STS 5, at Wanborough Manor, six miles from Brookwood. Lionel completed SOE’s training syllabus as a radio operator. Promoted to Captain in November 1942, his first mission was into occupied Corsica in order to support an intelligence circuit of the BCRA, the Free French intelligence service. He was landed by submarine in February and it was recorded that he sent 70 messages and received 60 in return, never once losing contact with his home station in Algiers. Lionel returned to Britain in November 1943 when French forces liberated Corsica and, once debriefed, he volunteered for a second mission. In recognition of his first operation, Lionel was awarded a justly deserved Military Cross. For his second mission, he was selected to be a radio operator to the ‘Bricklayer’ team led by Major France Antelme, one of F Section’s most experienced agents, with Ensign Madeleine Damerment as their courier. Both are remembered on the Memorial to the Missing. Lionel was given the code name ‘Mechanic’, field name Thibaud and a false identity of Jacques Lionel Heriat. His radio traffic was to be codenamed DAKS. He was dropped by parachute from a Halifax of 161 Squadron from RAF Tempsford on the night of 29 February/1 March 1944, around 30 kilometres east of Chartres. The operation and reception on the drop zone had, however, been arranged by the Germans as part of their Funkspiel using the captured radio set and codes of Noor Inayat-Khan (Nurse/Madeleine) of

the Phono circuit. Lionel, Damerment and Antelme were arrested as they landed. The Germans were particularly pleased to have caught Antelme (an important agent they had been searching for on an earlier mission in the summer of 1943) and wanted to protect the fact that one of their operators was transmitting using Noor’s set and codes. They succeeded in establishing radio contact, supposedly transmitted by Lionel, and continued to send messages until, on 4th May 1944 it was noted Lionel’s special security check had been incorrectly used and London had at last decided that the ‘Bricklayer’ team was compromised. It is likely that Lionel was in a group of captive agents deported to Germany and who arrived, by lorry, at Rawitsch (now Rawicz, in Poland) prison around 18 May 1944. In the period 24 June to 4 September 1944, after orders were received from Berlin for the execution of the SOE agents at Rawitsch, they were taken in two groups to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. As special prisoners, SOE officers were held in isolation in the wetterstelle (weather station) building, slightly apart from the other camp buildings. The first group, believed to total 10, were there only for four or five days when, at dawn on a Sunday morning they were executed by firing squad. The second group, brought shortly afterwards from Rawitsch, were shot immediately on arrival. Witnesses later claimed that a Ukrainian named Ivan who worked in the camp’s crematorium, extracted gold teeth from four of the victims before their bodies were burned. Fritz Deubel, an inmate of Gross-Rosen, was the sole witness to have identified, from a photograph, Lionel as one of the prisoners brought from Rawitsch. Lionel would have been 27 years old if executed in the period 24 June-4 September 1944 and his body disposed of in the crematorium at Gross-Rosen. He is named on an SOE memorial at the museum site for the camp, unveiled by General Sir Michael Rose, former commanding officer of the SAS Regiment in 2002, that The Secret WW2 Learning Network, Trustee, Paul McCue attended. Lionel is also remembered at the F Section Memorial in Valençay, France.

15 SEPTEMBER 2021
Looking for answers? Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com DON’T WORRY – BE HAPPY Dear Rabbi I know that happiness is an important principle in Judaism especially during the festivals. My question is simply how important is it really, especially when I’m not feeling it? Lior Dear Lior There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. She got excited and declared: “I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did and she had a wonderful day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. She got excited and she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. She got excited and she said, “Today I’m going to wear my hair in a ponytail.” So she did and she had a fun day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “Yes!” she exclaimed excitedly, “I don’t have to fix my hair today!” Attitude is everything! You could see the challenges of life as an obstacle or an opportunity. Similarly, there are two ways to see yourself – as either a victim of your circumstances, surrounds or upbringing – which in turn will make you sad; or as someone determined to recreate themselves and that sense of empowerment will make you
happy. Everyone has one of two stories: The good news is you get to be the author – you choose which one to write. Happiness and joy are not just conditions of the mind and heart. They have direct bearing on your overall disposition and the way you function in life. There are those who wake up, open their eyes and say, “Good morning, G-d!” And there are others who wake up, open their eyes and say, “Good G-d… morning!” The difference is one where you either despondently see every rosebush has thorns or joyously perceive how even thorn-bushes have roses. Maimonides stipulates that “one who in his insolence restrains himself from functioning in a joyous manner is a sinner and fool.” Why a sinner? Because a lot of things are inherent in life: aging, illness, death and losses of all kinds - but these events don’t have to be the cause of ongoing sadness. Yes, these events cause grief and sadness, but grief and sadness pass, like everything else, and are replaced with other experiences. The ego, however, clings to negative thoughts and feelings and, as a result, magnifies, intensifies, and sustains those emotions denying one the ability to rehabilitate. You then only compound the negative. The early nineteenth century scholar, Rabbi Aaron of Karlin once said: “Sadness itself is not a sin but what it can lead to, can be worse than any sin.” The point is that the disgruntlement and frustration that you feel in life, allow for discontentedness to block the arteries leading toward a happy heart. If you
are unhappy then you’re never going to see the bigger picture in life – you’ll ignore the inherent blessings and everything will essentially be seen and experienced in a negative context. So as a New Year resolution, strive to be happier; dig deep and see the blessings all around you.
AGE OF THE UNIVERSE Dear Rabbi What year was it that we started to count Jewish years and why? Claire Dear Claire We started to count when the world was created – precisely 5782 years ago. Why? Because that’s when the world was created. You might be asking the question on the basis of assuming the world to be much older (I know a number of apologetic rabbis who maintain the same) but that’s the way we believe it – always did, always will. Here’s to a great 5782 filled with an abundance of blessings, joy, good health and much success for all Jews throughout the world and indeed the entire universe!
BREAK A GLASS – NOT A HEART! Dear Rabbi At every Chupah I attend I hear a different Rabbi offer a different explanation for the breaking of a glass under the Chupah (not to mention some bad jokes). Can you shed light on the real reason please? Jason
Dear Jason A Jewish wedding ends with the breaking of a glass cup, after which everyone shouts “Mazal Tov.” This tradition reminds us that even at the peak of our joy, we remember all of the broken hearts that still exist in the world. We remember Jerusalem and our holy land that still needs redemption. And we pray for the restoration of all that has been shattered. But why do we shout Mazal Tov? What is it about breaking a glass that prompts an
outcry of good luck? We’re telling bride and groom that at times in life things may get broken. And when they do you have a choice to make. Either get bogged down in the negative, or - shout Mazal Tov! Maybe we’re momentarily off kilter but if you can laugh and rejoice together through the breakage of the little things thus making sure that they don’t lead to the breaking of the bigger things - then your lives will be filled with real Mazal and Nachas - enduring happiness and joy.

Yom Kippur during corona – Chapter II
BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN On the holiest day of the year-on Yom Kippur- we step back. Suppressing our routine, discarding food, and diminishing our sleep, we liberate our imagination to contemplate life, identity and future. Yom Kippur is a day of withdrawal, of religious awakening, spiritual cleansing and recoupling with G-d. Teshuva is timeless, stretching back to the beginning of history, when Man first sinned and was first accorded forgiveness by a merciful Creator. On this day of eternity, we join the generations of fallen humans who looked up to Heaven for redemption and for rebirth. Though teshuva is timeless, it must be animated by the fluctuations of life. Each year must provoke a different variety of teshuva based upon our current experiences. So much has transpired over the past two years. How should Yom Kippur during year two of corona be flavored differently? How is this Yom Kippur different from other Yom Kippurs?
BARGAINING WITH G-D
The process of teshuva includes tefila, viduy-confession, but also, bargaining. Somewhere along the journey to authentic teshuva, we arrive at a state of “recognition”- conceding our inadequacy while acknowledging that our many requests of G-d are undeserved. Somewhere along the journey of teshuva we face the harsh reality of possible punishment for our misconduct. At this stage we begin to bargain. We ask G-d to
consider our untapped “potential” and not necessarily our paltry achievements. We may have failed miserably, but we are confident in our recovery potential and in our future success. In our negotiations with G-d we also ask Him to “factor in” our suffering or, as the gemara refers to them, our yisurin. The stresses of life have hampered our religious progress. Furthermore, we argue, we have already suffered the great toll of life and need no additional punishment. Life itself should be part of the Yom Kippur calculus in our frantic bargaining with G-d. Prior to the Kol Nidre, many recite a soulful confession known as Tefillat Zakah – a somber prayer for purification. We beg G-d to consider the strain of raising a family or the pressures of earning a living- all of which may have distracted us from religious excellence. If the common pressures of life mitigate our Yom Kippur assessment, what is to be said about the toll of the corona epidemic? Some have lost more and some have lost less, but this pandemic has scrambled the arc of our lives and confounded our greatest ambitions. We ask G-d to look kindly upon us while taking the corona toll into account. Standing Alone Occurring a few days before Sukkot, Yom Kippur is often teamed with the chagim. By the time Yom Kippur arrives many of us are already in half-Sukkot mode. Though Yom Kippur shares several traits with general Yom Tov, it differs in a crucial aspect. Days of Yom Tov are national celebrations, commemorating framing events of Jewish history- from yetizat Mitzrayim, to receiving the Torah at Sinai, to the safe desert passage. Additionally, chagim serve as agricultural “mile-markers”, denoting the passing of seasons. The historical echo and the agricultural resonance of the three chagim, are both experienced collectively. An entire nation jointly recalls the seminal moments which shaped our past, and the common agricultural drama which was jointly navigated. Three times a year throngs of Jews flock to “the mountain” for aliya l’regel and for national celebration. Yom Kippur has no explicit historical antecedent nor is it associated with a particular agricultural moment. Unlike the collectivism of the chagim, Yom Kippur shines a spotlight on each individual soul. Just as Moshe stood on a solitary mountain, single-handedly praying for atonement, we stand alone before G-d confessing, tearing and longing for His response. Unlike the communal energy of the chagim, Yom Kippur is driven by the solitude of our individual spirit. Over the past 70 years, Jewish consciousness has been animated by collective identity. Life in the Jewish state, is
infused with a sense of national calling and of shared undertaking. Across the Jewish world, robust and sustainable communities have evolved, offering a rich texture of Jewish life. Sometimes strong national identity can distract us from personal struggle. We sometimes substitute “belonging” for “becoming”, communal affiliation for personal renovation. Yom Kippur restores the delicate balance between national destiny and personal identity. Over the past two years we have spent much time “alone”. This Yom Kippur we will be more “alone” than during typical years. Some will attend communal services and some will not even have that opportunity. Either way, our assembling will shrink we will all stand before G-d more privately and more quietly. Instead of ascending the mountain of Jewish history, we will descend into the silent abyss of our own soul searching for lost identity and bridging our way back to G-d. On this day of loneliness, we look for the comfort of G-d’s embrace.
PANORAMIC TESHUVA
Teshuva is often influenced or even compromised by “recency bias”. We look back upon the past year, contemplating our recent victories and our latest failures. However, there is a different form of teshuva, which isn’t telescopic but wide-ranging. A teshuva which doesn’t micro-analyze our current self but which appraises the broader fabric of our lives. What has become of our dreams and of our ambitions? Which decisions have shaped our lives and which choices would we like to reverse? Which relationships have elicited our better selves and which have become emotionally broken? The gemara encourages us to confess past failures, effectively casting teshuva as a retrospective assessment of the totality of our lives. Classic teshuva should both deconstruct our current self but also reconstruct our former selves. The past two years we have lived in the shadow of death. Confronting death calls attention to the fragility of life. Contemplating our mortality, invites a more sweeping teshuva and a broad-horizoned soul-searching. Corona teshuva should be more panoramic and less telescopic. It is now time to zoom out and track our lives.
PATIENCE AND GRACIOUSNESS
Amidst the rich tapestry of Yom Kippur liturgy, only one prayer is Divinely authored. G-d Himself catalogued the thirteen middot of rachamim- a record of thirteen Divine attributes, mandating their incorporation within our teshuva prayers. By reciting the catalog, we attempt to imitate these traits and become more G-d-like. By living more G-dly lives,
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
we become greater beneficiaries of His mercy. While various traits describe G-d’s compassion and His love for us, the attribute of “erech apa’im” portrays Him as patient and slow to anger. He tolerates human failure, even bearing outright rebellion, all the while patiently awaiting repentance and improvement. As we whisper during Yom Kippur prayers: “ad yom moso t’chakeh lo (You wait for him [the sinner] even until the day he dies)”. Our stressful pandemic world has become very angry and our interpersonal relationships have become fractured. Shifting routines, uncertainty about the future and diminished social opportunities have increased our tension and anxiety levels. We sorely require more patience and more generosity of spirit. We badly need to be more like G-d in our tolerance and magnanimity. This trait of “erech apa’im” is the Heavenly attribute we desperately need more of on this battered earth. This year, more than any, we need to control our temper and extend our tolerance, and offer our spirit. Gracious people, understand the frailty of the human condition and more easily accept the imperfections of others. Aware of the sad music of life they embrace a flawed world rather than judging or dismissing “blemished people”. Our sickly world need more graciousness and longer patience.
TESHUVA WILL HEAL US
The gemara extols teshuva as the healer of our world. In his landmark book of teshuva entitled Orot Hateshuva, Rav Kook viewed the healing powers of teshuva as a metaphor. To him, an aveirah is a cosmic deviation. The entire universe is constantly surging toward a more perfect state in which all reality-animate and inanimateexists in harmony with the will of G-d and, consequently, with itself. If sin is a deviation, penitence or the repair of sin realigns or ‘heals’ a distorted world. Sin realigns a world gone awry. For those of us living through this pandemic, the healing effects of teshuva aren’t just a metaphor. There is obviously something broken in our world- medically and, of course, spiritually. We strive, with G-d’s help, to vanquish this outbreak and heal our world. However, our efforts will always be partial and temporary. The world will only be fully healed when history has concluded and been supernaturally redeemed. If we desire full healing it can only arrive with the redemption of history. Teshuva paves the road to redemption and the journey to a cured world.

Succot: Divine providence during a “random” epidemic
BY RABBI MOSHE TARAGIN Jewish holidays celebrate framing moments of national destiny. Pesach recalls our liberation from Egypt while Shavuot re-dramatizes our selection at Sinai. By contrast, the holiday of Succot is more internationally flavored. Similar to Pesach and Shavuot, it is tagged to a national memory- Divine protection of the Jewish desert travelers. Unlike Pesach and Shavuot though, which recall particular miraculous moments, the “Succot event” unfolded over a forty-year period of protection in the wilderness. Furthermore, the deliverance of Pesach and the revelation at Sinai each ended, whereas the drama of Succot – Divine supervisioncontinues. Divine providence or “hashgacha” is ongoing. Divine providence isn’t an exclusively Jewish phenomenon. Hashem maintains and supervises His entire world in detailed fashion. The “clockwork theory” of the universe asserts that God created this world, but wound it up as a clock, which ticks along, with its gears governed by the laws of physics. The Succot experience roundly debunks this theory, affirming Hashem’s direct management of the “machine of Nature” and his constant engagement in the affairs of Man. The heightened hashgacha during those forty years in the wilderness epitomized the “expanded supervision” which we constantly enjoy. Why do deserve such supervision, and what are our reciprocal responsibilities, given our heightened level of Divine supervision. Studying these symbols of hashgacha- their texture and their dimensions- uncovers deeper understandings of Hashem’s role in steering our lives.
REVISITING THE CREATION OF MAN
Though the frame of the succah may be assembled from any durable material, the sechach or the roof is more carefully regulated. The sechach-roof must be composed of natural and unprocessed materials. Synthetic substances or items which have undergone human treatment, are each invalid. Essentially, the roof must be constructed with pristine substances, untainted by human hand. Surprisingly, the Talmud associates these criteria of a succah roof with the creation of Man. Prior to Man’s actual creation, an infertile and brownish Earth hadn’t yet produced crops or even vegetation. Without homo sapiens there was no need for flora, foliage, or food. In advance of Man’s arrival and in preparation for his survival, Hashem conjured a watery mist to moisten the earth’s surface, priming it for farming and agriculture. Having set the stage for Man, Hashem carefully crafted Adam, even breathing life into his nostrils. Unlike general Nature, Man was delicately and “carefully” fashioned. Nature in general, was generated by Divine speech, Man was molded by Divine “actions”. Man’s arrival is preceded by a ‘misting’ of the Earth. Man has arrived! Man is the Divine masterpiece, possessing distinct God-like traits and even absorbing (metaphorically) the breath of Hashem himself. The entire natural ecosystem serves humanity. Without humans, the Earth does not produce. The mysterious mist rising above a primal earth, heralds the majesty of Man and his surpassing status among creation. Entering a succah- roofed with natural and pristine materials-recalls that “misting” and that seminal moment in human history. This imaginative journey in time, back to the creation of Man, illustrates that Man receives heightened hashgacha supervision because of his exclusive
status and because of his vast potential. Extraordinary hashgacha for Man is a product of extraordinary expectations of Man. Endowed with free will, humans alone can forge individual identity as well as shape human history. Given this immense potential, we deserve and depend upon, added attention from Hashem. Entering a succah- ceilinged with pristine materials- celebrates the magnificence of Man as a uniquely protected and a uniquely empowered creature. The current pandemic challenges our faith in Divine providence. We are afflicted with a virus which has ‘leapt’ from the animal kingdom to the human sphere and now threatens all of humanity. Heightened hashgacha for Man, as the centerpiece of creation, isn’t easily apparent. Additionally, this pandemic has a distinctively random feel. Many righteous people have passed away just as people of lesser faith have succumbed to this virus. The virus doesn’t differentiate between race, color, or religion. What has become of the Divine providence which was extended to Man and augmented for Jews? Often, the harshest punishment lies in the “rolling back” of hashgacha. The Torah warns that if remain callous to Divine supervision, Hashem will withdraw His hashgacha and subject us to the misfortunes of chance and the hazards of circumstances. It is obviously impossible to decipher whether we are enduring this condition. Either way, people of emuna possess unending conviction that hashgacha exists even when it remains clouded in mystery. In other ways, Divine providence has been manifestly apparent during this pandemic. In previous generations pandemics claimed tens of millions of lives. Unprotected by vaccines and unarmed with screening and testing procedures, humanity was defenseless against the viral onslaught. We face this health crisis better equipped and better safeguarded. Hashem has guided human scientific discovery allowing us to generate life-saving vaccines in record time. Communication technology has enabled society to maintain “distance education” and remote occupation, preserving a semblance of routine and social order. Whatever success we have discovered in managing this pandemic is a sign of Divine providence steering human achievement. Hashem is watching us even through the darkness.
RETURNING TO THE PALACE
In addition to invoking the creation of Man, the succah also references a different historical moment and recalls an earlier historical structure. The minimal
height of a succah is eighty centimeters or about thirty- two inches, though, obviously, most livable succah structures far exceed this minimal requirement. This minimum height of the succah is calculated by comparing the succah to the dimensions of the keruvim- the angel-like figures which adorned the aron of the mishkan. A distance of thirty-two inches separated the top of the ark from the extended wings of these keruvuim. Just as the wings of these angels hovered at a height of thirty-two inches, the sechach of a succah must hang at that same altitude. Symbolically, entering a succah equates to strolling under the wings of these angels. A succah transports us back to the house we built for Hashem. Beyond the Divine supervision which envelopes every human being, Jews are privileged with additional hashgacha. We were chosen to portray Hashem to an uneducated world and to introduce humanity to the concept of one God. In our “heyday” we actually built a mansion to house the presence of Hashem on our planet. Signaling our Heavenly stature, we adorned the innermost chamber of this palace with wings of angels. Sadly, through our repeated betrayals, we forfeited this palace. The succah of hashgacha evokes that outstanding building, and the augmented providence extended to the people of Divine mission. No longer privileged to outspread angelic wings we simulate our past glories with sacred sechach hanging overhead. During the past two thousand years of historical adversity, Hashem’s careful and loving supervision protected our people against unimaginable hostility and hatred. We have now returned to the historical stage and, once again, Hashem’s care for His people and His land are plainly visible. Life in Israel, under the watchful eye of Hashem, has become an expanded succah experience. Entering a succah is an imaginative journey to two pivotal moments in the history of Divine providence. Man was created singular, endowed with marvelous potential and supervised with extraordinary Divine care. Additionally, Hashem selected our people to present belief and faith to a confused planet. We constructed His Temple and disseminated His will. We were shielded from the strains of history by extraordinary hashgacha. Upon our return to the land of destiny, His supervision has become obvious once again. Welcome to the succah we call Israel !

Why do we Fast on Yom Kippur? BY GAVRIEL COHN The most important and familiar commandment of Yom Kippur is that of fasting. For a twenty-five hour period we cannot eat or drink. Additionally, although perhaps less well-known, we must not wear leather shoes, bath, anoint ourselves or engage in marital relations. These prohibitions are known as the “five afflictions.” Yet why? What is the purpose of abstaining from these activities – some of our most basic and normal bodily needs – on Yom Kippur? The Sefer HaChinuch, a medieval work which provides a rationale for every Biblical commandment, explains that Yom Kippur is a day when we return to worshipping G-d correctly. Therefore, we abstain from “the sensual pleasures that propel our bodies toward desire and sin and that cause people to negate their intellects from seeking the truth, which is the service of G-d.” The Rambam in his Guide for the Perplexed explains similarly (although he stresses the aspect of repentance) that “the day was appointed
as a day devoted to repentance and the true worship of G-d. For this reason, all material enjoyment, all trouble and care for the body, are prohibited, no work may be done; the day must be spent in confession; everyone shall confess his sins and abandon them.” Yet, perhaps we could advance another, entirely different reason as to why we fast and abstain from these various physical activities on Yom Kippur. The day of Yom Kippur, in essence, is a time for restoring our relationships, drawing back close to both G-d. Throughout the year, our disobedience and apathy has driven a wedge between us and G-d. Similarly, perhaps, over the course of time, many of our interactions with other people have created rifts and discord. Yom Kippur is a
day set aside for us to beg those we have wronged (G-d in particular) to provide us with a second chance to draw close to them once more. By commanding us to refrain from food and drink, wearing leather shoes, bathing, anointing ourselves and engaging in marital relations, the Torah is providing us with the first
Yom Kippur is a day set aside for us to beg those we have wronged (G-d in particular) to provide us with a second chance to draw close to them once more.
crucial step in how to recreate those close, positive relationships once more. To maintain a healthy relationship, by definition, means, to an extent, forgetting one’s own personal needs and wants, and instead focusing on the other party. Thus, by not eating and drinking on Yom Kippur, we are taking this first step. We stop seeking to fulfil all of our immediate physical desires in an effort to look beyond ourselves and draw back close to other people and to G-d. Gavriel Cohn is an informal educator at Immanuel College, Bushey. He has written a number of Torah articles for various publications. If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch! gavcohn@ gmail.com.
Chovat Halevavot Hilchot Yom Kippur The sixth and final difference between taking a security pledge from one’s friend to “taking a security pledge” from G-d (i.e. not serving G-d before one’s “needs” are met) are as follows: Taking a security from a debtor is only because one does not feel confident that they will repay the debt. If, however, one was fully confident that the debtor would repay their debt in time it would be completely superfluous to take a security from them. Likewise, if one reminds themselves that G-d has already granted myriads of kindnesses to us, both as individuals and as a nation, then they would understand that it is ridiculous to make demands of G-d as a way of ensuring that He will repay them for their observance of Torah and Mitzvot. Finally, one who takes a security pledge from their friend only takes in proportion to the debt owed. When it comes to
serving Hashem, if one makes demands of Hashem prior to serving Him, it will not be possible to repay the “pledge” as the favours G-d performs for us have already outweighed any “good deed” we can “repay” to Him. The author then continues to list the modes of behaviour that are detrimental to having true trust in Hashem. How can one lose their trust in G-d? If one does not realise the extent of the kindness and mercy which Hashem has on us all and on all of His creations. Not only that, but also a failure to appreciate the concept of “Divine Providence” – at the end of the day, everything is controlled by Hashem. Another cause for lack of trust is simple ignorance – lack of knowledge that Hashem commanded us through His prophets – “Trust in G-d forever” – (words we say each day in the Uva Le’tzion prayer).
Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year, and the mood of the day is serious yet hopeful. The Torah and the sages forbade certain activities on the evening and daytime of Yom Kippur and these prohibitions apply from candle lighting time Wednesday afternoon until nightfall the following day. A sick person may wear leather shoes. However, if there is no sick person or young child in the home who may use the leather shoes, these should be treated as Muktzah on Yom Kippur and only moved if there is another permissible use for them (not wearing them) or if the space they are occupying is needed. Pregnant and nursing women do fast, however, if there is any concern as to the safety of the mother or baby, a competent Rabbi should be consulted. Children before Bar or Bat Mitzvah age should not fast – especially those under 9; however, regarding washing only until the knuckles, not wearing leather shoes and not anointing (with soaps etc) it is appropriate to train them in these even prior to age 9.
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
It is ideal to smell Besamim on Yom Kippur, as, due to the fast day, most people would otherwise lack in their 100 Brachot made daily. In order to make a new Brachah on Besamim having done so already, one should have left the building for a while and/or a significant time should have passed since the last time a Brachah was recited on the Besamim, otherwise one could end up making unnecessary Brachot in their pursuit of this Mitzvah. Yizkor is recited on Yom Kippur as this is an activity that lends itself to the seriousness of the day. Following Yom Kippur, one should pray Maariv with respect for the prayer, notwithstanding how hungry one is from the fast. After Havdalah it is customary to engage in the building of the Sukkah. If one is at home and is awaiting Havdalah, then following nightfall, one can recite “Baruch Hamavdil Ben Kodesh Lechol” and drink WATER only.

Joy and Fear on the Yamim Noraim BY RAV YOSEF ZVI RIMON The Rambam writes (Hilchot Chanukah 3:6): “There is no Hallel on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur because they are days of teshuva, fear and awe, not days of excess joy.” The Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 32b) also explains why we don’t say Hallel: Rabbi Abahu said: the angels said before G-d: Master of the Universe, why doesn’t Israel sing before You on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur? He said to them: is it conceivable that a King is sitting on the Throne of Judgement, with the books of life and death open before Him, and Israel are singing? However, the Yerushalmi (Rosh Hashanah 1:3) describes a different feeling: … when a person knows he has an impending court case, he will wrap himself in black and grow his beard and not cut his nails, because he doesn’t know what his verdict will be. Not Am Yisrael. They wrap themselves in
white and shave their beards and cut their nails and eat and drink and are joyful on Rosh Hashanah, because they know HaKadosh Baruch Hu performs miracles for them… How can we reconcile the two feelings, of awe and trepidation on the one hand, and joy and celebration on the other? The Zohar (Bamidbar [Part 3], p. 118a) suggests the difference is between Am Yisrael living in the Holy Land, and Am Yisrael living in other lands. When Am Yisrael are in galut, we have to work on fear and awe while in Eretz Yisrael, our avodah is joy.
When Am Yisrael are in galut, we have to work on fear and awe while in Eretz Yisrael, our avodah is joy.
The Sfat Emet (Devarim, Re’eh 5661), explains. The avodah of joy comes from the soul. The avodah of fear comes through the body. In Eretz Yisrael there is a special kedusha that gives strength to the soul. The work outside Israel is that of fear and awe (and from that we merit simcha). In Eretz Yisrael, the avodah is with joy, and from the simcha we merit awe, a closeness to G-d and the fear of Heaven! Rav Kook offers a different explanation. When Am Yisrael are in galut, even if they are many, they are a collection of individuals (Orot 166, 18). Each person thinks about their own needs. In Eretz Yisrael it’s a communal avodah. Individual Jews become “Klal Yisrael.” When one enters Eretz Yisrael, this neshama klalit – collective soul – comes into them, and the more one desires to be included in the neshama klalit, so will one’s inner sanctity shine. Hence, a person who arrives at Rosh Hashanah ‘privately’ is full of fear and
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
trepidation, while a person who arrives at Rosh Hashanah with a ‘collective’ outlook, comes with a sense of joy. Deep happiness in crowning G-d in the world, in Am Yisrael’s role in crowning Hashem (and on Yom Kippur, in G-d’s forgiveness). Of course, we need the trembling, trepidation, and tears, just as we need the joy, singing and elation. Eretz Yisrael is able to hold these opposites. Here we can rejoice and we can cry. We can sing Unetane Tokef in fear and Mareh Kohen with joy. And on the same day, we can say Yizkor on Shemini Atzeret and celebrate Simchat Torah! Only in Eretz Yisrael! Rav Yosef Zvi Rimon serves as Head of Mizrachi’s Educational Advisory Board and Rabbinic Council. He was recently appointed as the first Rabbi of the Gush Etzion Regional Council and is a member of Mizrachi’s Speakers Bureau (www. mizrachi.org/speakers).

Yom Kippur & Ha’azinu Ha’azinu Word Search
Yom Kippur is arriving, the holiest day of the year. We ask our parents, family and friends for forgiveness and arrive in Shul to daven 5 different prayers - including a once-a-year Ne’ilah prayer. We also plead with Hashem to grant everybody a year full of blessing and for the final redemption and we read about the service of the Kohen Gadol in the Beit Hamikdash on Yom Kippur and all the happiness that surrounded that. We refrain from wearing leather shoes or washing our full hands and, when in shul, we show respect for the serious atmosphere that should be found there. After Yom Kippur we are pleased with our
“clean slate” and we busy ourselves with the next Yom Tov - Sukkot. We celebrate for 9 days - first with Sukkot, then with Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. We sit in the Sukkah and we also shake the four Minim, following which we celebrate with the Torah, recognising that through the Torah, we can carry all the excitement and good feeling into the winter months. On Simchat Torah we lein the final Sidra Vezot Habracha and we immediately begin the new round of Bereshit. This reminds us that a Jew never finishes learning - each time around brings new knowledge, new insight and new inspiration.

ivki loved the beginning of each new school year. Her pencils were newly sharpened in her brand new sparkly pencil case. All her felt tips, rubbers and sharpeners were neatly organised in her tray. She felt calm and relaxed ahead of her next lesson. That was until Shevi came in and sat down next to Rivki. Rivki sighed and tried to hide her disappointment. Shevi was the exact opposite of Rivki. It was the first lesson of the school day and Shevi’s hair was already in a mess. As she emptied out her bag, Rivki looked in horror at the jumble of pencils and rubbers that fell out, along with crumbs from a long forgotten cracker. Rivki couldn’t understand how Shevi could like having everything in such a mess. Their new teacher Miss Landau came into the classroom. “Girls, welcome to a brand new year of learning. Well done to all of you for arriving on time and I hope you have all your stationery ready.” Beside Rivki, Shevi was scrambling to collect all her pencils, rubbers and sharpeners together. “Today, we are learning about Yom Kippur. Doing teshuva for the things we have done wrong this year is really important. However, there is something else which can be very hard to do but is just as
Neat and Nice important and that is forgiving others. We ask Hashem to forgive us for all the things we have done wrong over the year, but do we forgive others for the things they have done to us? It is really important to forgive those who have hurt us especially as the
Torah warns us not to bear a grudge. This means we should try to be understanding of what the other person did and not hold it against them.” “My sister ripped my Harry Potter book in half, do I have to forgive her?” Naomi
asked. “Yes, you should really try to if you can, especially if she has said sorry and feels bad about it” replied Miss Landau. “I know that this is really hard to do, but this is something that we can all work on together. I want everyone to think of a time they have been hurt by someone and write it down. Maybe it was a friend who lost something of yours or a sibling who broke your toy.” Everyone got out their pencils and had a good think. At the end of the class, each girl had an example to take home and try to work on before Yom Kippur. Rivki was starting to pack up her bag, when suddenly Shevi knocked all of Rivki’s pencils on the floor. “I am so so sorry” Shevi said, looking as upset as Rivki felt. “I was just bending down to pick up the pencil I had dropped.” Rivki bent down and tried to hide her tears as she picked up her stationary which was now strewn all over the floor. She tried not to notice the dirt that was now on her new pencil case and the scratches on her new pencils. She thought about what the teacher had just told them about forgiveness. Rivki stood up and gave Shevi a hug “It’s ok, I don’t like my pens on the floor, but you didn’t mean it. Thank you for saying sorry.” Smiling with relief, Shevi and Rivki left the classroom together.

Yom Kippur
In a nutshell The holiest day of the year – Yom Kippur is finally arriving. After asking our family and friends forgiveness on Erev Yom Kippur, we stand in shul for much of the day with much seriousness, pleading with Hashem to forgive our sins and shortcomings in Torah observance over the past year, and we ask for a good year for us and all the Jewish people. Adults refrain from eating and all refrain from wearing leather shoes and from washing their full hands. The day is highly focused on confessing our sins, expressing our regret, and committing to trying to live life as Hashem wants us to. During the service, we read of the programme that was the Kohen Gadol’s on Yom Kippur in the Beit Hamikdash. The drama, the high points and the elevated atmosphere that was experienced there, can only be recited by us today, but we yearn for the day when we will once again have the privilege to be a true light unto the nations, when Moshiach will arrive and the service in the Beit Hamikdash resumes.
We have the once-a-year prayer called Ne’ilah, where, in the final moments of the day, we describe the “gates of heaven” that have been wide open during this special time, as closing at the end of a vast opportunity. We pray Avinu Malkeinu and ask for all to be “sealed” in the book of life, blessings, redemption, forgiveness and more! After Yom Kippur, we rejoice and wish each other a Good Yom Tov, confident that Hashem will have granted forgiveness to His beloved people. After Havdalah, we grab the first opportunity for a Mitzvah – which for many is the building of the Sukkah, in preparation for the next exciting stop on the journey through Tishrei! Prior to Sukkot, we have Shabbat Parshat Ha’azinu, which is the “song” that Moshe taught us on his final day on earth. We are taught that this “song” contains a microcosm of the entire Jewish History – and YOU are also alluded to in it. Sukkot starts on Monday evening, continues on
Word Wheel The goal of a word wheel puzzle is to create as many words possible with the letters in the word wheel. Each word must contain at least three letters. You can only use each letter once and every word must have the letter in the centre of the wheel.
Tuesday as a Yom Tov outside of Eretz Yisrael, and continues with Chol Hamoed, culminating in Hoshanah Rabba. Many unique Mitzvot are performed on Sukkot, including Sukkah and shaking the 4 minim. Many celebrate with a remembrance to the “Simchat Beit Hashoevah” and meet their teachers, relatives and friends. The final two days of this festive season are Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. The Sages compared this Yom Tov to a banquet held by a king. At the end of the party, the king told his friends – we have had such a great time, please stay with me for an extra day. In a similar way, Hashem asks us, after a wonderful month of closeness to Him, be it through the Rosh Hashana prayers and customs, the purity process of Yom Kippur, and the joy and faith that accompanies Sukkah – don’t run away. Stay with G-d one extra day. And take all those high points and let them carry you through the winter months!

Manchester City reeled off a third consecutive league win to defeat Leicester City at King Power Stadium. Pep Guardiola told BBC Sport, “It is a difficult place to come, we know that. We did very many good things.” He added, “The last 11 goals I think were scored by nine different players. We don’t have a real striker so we do it as a team.” Leicester’s boss Brendon Rodgers told BBC Sport, “Technically they really test you but I’m really proud of the team. We played some fantastic football to stay in the game.” Brighton have made a superb start to the season and are level on points with City after
an injury time winner from Leandro Trossard to take all the points at Brentford. Bryan Mbeumo missed three chances for the hosts at Brentford Community Stadium. The Seagulls had created few opportunities before Trossard grabbed the headlines with a sensational strike from the edge of the penalty area on 90 minutes to steal the points. Super sub Odsonne Edouard was the hero on his debut for Crystal Palace scoring twice in a 3-0 derby win against 10-man Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park. Wilfried Zaha slotted home a penalty against a disjointed Spurs side after Ben Davies handled a cross. Deadline-day signing Edouard struck with his first touch of the ball from Zaha’s cross just 28 seconds after entering the fray before notching his second from a Conor Gallagher pass late on. Palace held a player advantage after Japhet Tanganga received two yellow cards before the hour. Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo, accepted his team had been poor overall. He told BBC Sport, “Even before the penalty we had problems. We were in control of the game in the first half but with problems. There is no need to find excuses. We didn’t play well.”
Palace manager Patrick Vieira told BBC Sport, “It was a really good team performance. We worked hard, we worked well, we created chances and I’m really pleased with the goals we scored.” Michail Antonio saw red as West Ham remain unbeaten but they will have hoped for more against Southampton than a goalless draw at St Mary’s Stadium. Antonio received a second yellow card for a poor challenge on Moussa Djenepo deep into stoppage time. The Hammers bossed possession but Saints could have taken the points as Armando Broja saw a late header cleared off the line by Hammers captain Declan Rice. Wolves deservedly picked up a first league win with a 2-0 triumph at Watford at Vicarage Road. The visitors took the lead with a Francisco Sierralta own goal before sealing the win through substitute Hwang Hee-chan courtesy of a close range finish. Arsenal also claimed a first win of the campaign with a goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to defeat Norwich City at Emirates Stadium. The Canaries have yet to pick up a point on their return to top flight football.
Ronaldo and Messi chase Champions League glory BY DAVID SAFFER The UEFA Champions League is back with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi chasing another shot at glory in the competition this week. Ronaldo will be leading the line for Manchester United whilst Messi is hoping for one last hurrah at Paris St Germain who are desperate for a first Euro title. Ronaldo has triumphed in the competition on five occasions, Messi four. Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer with 135 goals with Messi next on the list with 120 goals from his Barcelona exploits. Their career stats to date are mindboggling and they are not finished yet! Both Ronaldo and Messi are top goal scorers and the most capped player for their respective countries, Portugal and Argentina. Ronaldo became the all-time leading international goalscorer on 111 goals with a brace against the Republic of Ireland whilst Messi scored his 79th to pass Pele’s landmark figure with a hat-trick against Bolivia only last week. “I’m very happy,” said Ronaldo. “Not only because I beat the record but for the special moments we had, getting two goals at the end of the game is so tough, I appreciate what the team did.” “I was really anxious and I really wanted to enjoy it,” Messi said. “I’ve waited a long time for this, I went for it, and I dreamt about it.” Presently Ronaldo heads Messi with 783 to 748 career goals. The stats goal ratio of
Messi 0.81 and Ronaldo 0.73 is simply stunning. Astonishingly, Ronaldo has 57 career hat-tricks to Messi’s 55. And the penalty figures are also crazy with Ronaldo leading the way over Messi 139 to 100. Most players are lucky to score these totals from open play in a career! As for major honours Ronaldo edges Messi 25-24 (league titles, domestic cup wins, FIFA Club World Cups, COPA America, Euro Championships and Nations Leagues), however Messi heads Ronaldo with Ballon d’Or trophies six to five. One can only guess where these statistics will end up by the time they both hang up their boots and take a place in the pantheon of greatest ever players. Regarding this season’s Champions League, it seems no time at all since Chelsea was lifting the trophy last May. Kai Havertz scored the only goal to deny Manchester City a first title. The 2021/22 final takes place at the St Petersburg Stadium, Russia on May 28th. Chelsea and City are among the favourites and strengthened their squads with £97.5m sharpshooter Romlula Lukaku leading the defending champs attack while £100m Jack Grealish has added even more attacking options for Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions. The most talked about transfers of the summer though were Messi’s arrival at PSG, which illustrated the French sides intent this season. And with a forward line of Messi, Kilian Mbappe and Neymar leading the PSG attack they will take some stopping.
The Reds could go far after the return of prodigal son Ronaldo back at Old Trafford. Ronaldo scored twice on his debut in a 4-1 victory against Newcastle United. They are certainly in with a shout of Euro glory. Any discussion about UEFA’s premier tournament though must also include Bayern Munich whilst Liverpool, Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona will also look to go deep. The latest odds have PSG leading the way followed closely by Bayern, Chelsea and the Manchester clubs.
UEFA Champions League 2021/22 Group A: Manchester City, Paris St Germain, RB Leipzig, Club Bruges Group B: Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Porto, AC Milan Group C: Sporting Lisbon, Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, Besiktas Group D: Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Sheriff Tiraspol Group E: Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Benfica, Dynamo Kiev Group F: Villarreal, Manchester United, Atalanta, Young Boys Group G: Lille, Sevilla, FC Salzburg, Wolfsburg Group H: Chelsea, Juventus, Zenit St Petersburg, Malmo
THEJEWISHWEEKLY.COM
Chelsea start out at home to Zenit St Peterburg and should come through Group H which also includes Italian giants Juventus and Malmo. Manchester City and PSG line up in Group A so it will be some battle who comes top to avoid potential big guns in the knock out phase. City face RB Leipzig, who will be no pushovers, PSG travel to Club Bruges in opening clashes. The draw appears to have been kind to Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s United who kick off away to Young Boys in Group F. Ronaldo and co should account for the Swiss side, Villareal and Atalanta. Liverpool, meantime, are arguably in the toughest quartet of teams possible as they take on initially AC Milan then Atletico Madrid and FC Porto in Group B. Jurgen Klopp’s men will have their work cut out to get through but it is not beyond them. Another standout set of games will come in Group E where Barcelona host Bayern Munich while Dynamo Kiev welcome Benfica. The Germans are most pundits’ favourites to top the group especially as the Spaniards are rebuilding, as are their great rivals Real Madrid who travel to Inter Milan where they will be severely tested in the Group D. Both though should make the last 16 as they will be expected to overcome Shakhtar Donestsk and debutants Sheriff Tiraspol. The coming weeks are set to be tremendous for all followers of top level football.
