Israeli Defence Forces have intensified efforts to apprehend a terrorist who stabbed a Rabbi to death in the West Bank settlement of Ariel on Monday afternoon. The Palestinian assailant stabbed to death Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal in a shocking attack that has outraged Jews around the world. The father of four was waiting at a hitchhiking post near Jerusalem Boulevard on his way to a Brit Milah circumcision ceremony for his nephew when the sickening incident occurred. An off-duty IDF officer who witnessed the assault pursued the terrorist, striking him with his vehicle twice. But the killer fled towards the Palestinian village of Kifl Haris, the IDF said. Security forces immediately

IDF manhunt for assassin continues CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

said. “Apply sovereignty.” Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman tweeted: “The heart breaks, it’s only a matter of time before security forces will close accounts with the murderer.” Israeli president Reuven Rivlin was “deeply saddened” by the terror attack. “We all send comfort and strength to his widow, his four young children, his family and his students, who will never forget him,” he tweeted. ZAKA Commander in the Shai region, Gil Bismut, conﬁrmed details of the stabbing. “I and my fellow ZAKA volunteers remained at the site to clear the area of human remains to ensure a full Jewish burial,” he said. Originally from Rehovot, Rabbi Ben-Gal lived in the community of Har Bracha where some 2500 residents live on the outskirts of Shechem, also known as Nablus. He was a teacher at the B’nei Akiva yeshiva in the Tel Aviv suburb of Givat Shmuel. Friends and family said he devoted his life to education, his students and his family. Close friend, Yogev Cohen, said of Ben-Gal that he was a “model father,” an “amazing husband” and “idealist” who helped build the settlement Har Bracha, where he also learnt in Kollel and Yeshiva. “He was a special mix of derech

eretz and Torah, a man with a heart of gold,” Cohen told Hebrew-language media, using a term for decency and morality. “Just last week he told me how much he loved his students and loved to teach them a mix of Torah, science and values.” Rabbi Ben-Gal was buried in Har Bracha on Tuesday morning and is the second Israeli to be killed in an attack in the West Bank in under a month. Rabbi Raziel Shevach, 35, was fatally shot by Palestinians terrorists Rabbi in a drive-by shooting near Nablus in the northern West Bank on January 9. On Monday, Shevach’s widow Yael indicated that the families knew each other and shared a picture on social media of her late husband with Itamar Ben-Gal with the words “I never thought I would feel like I had a sister,” she wrote. “We’ll get through this together.” West Bank Regional Council head Yossi Dagan said the two murders were unacceptable. “I cannot look more into the eyes of bereaved families,” Dagan commented. “It is not enough to chase terrorists. The terror infrastructure must be dealt with.” The killer, named Abed al-Karim Adel Assi, 19, has an Israeli mother and Palestinian father. However, investigations found Adel Assi was abandoned by his parents and went from one youth shelter to another

becoming addicted to drugs and spent the last few years living on the street and in different homeless shelters for youth. When he was 17, Adel Assi spent three months at a shelter for homeless youth aged 14-21 in Tel Aviv’s Neve Tzedek neighbourhood operated by the Shanti House, a non-profit organization helping at-risk youth. He left after staff at the shelter urged him not to visit his father in Nablus, because they were concerned he would be taken advantage of by hostile elements. “He didn’t last here because at some point we forbad him from going to Nablus,” Halit Levy, the Shanti House’s coordinator, told Ynet. “He would go to his family in Nablus once a week, and we felt that an at-risk teenager regularly moving between Tel Aviv and Nablus, despite his blue (Israeli) ID, was dangerous.” “We told him we were no longer willing to allow him to regularly go to Nablus, only once every few months, and with us knowing who he’s going to see, how long he’s going for, and how he was coming back,” she said, adding this eventually led Abed to leave the Shanti House. “I don’t know what circumstances, after he left the Shanti House, eventually led him to become a terrorist and carry out this awful act,” Levy said. “It’s very sad to us. I’m sad such a teenager kills a father of four. We’re trying to help everyone,

but we don’t always succeed. Unfortunately, we were not able to help Abed. He chose violence, which contradicts all of the Shanti House’s values. But this won’t discourage us from helping the next child.” The terrorist’s Facebook page indicated that he became depressed, conﬂicted and radicalised over the last few months. The Shanti House takes in over 1,500 children a year regardless of religion, race or gender. There are Jewish, Arab, Muslim, Christian, Eritrean, Ethiopian, gay and lesbian children here. Some 50,000 children have stayed at the Shanti House. The killing brought condemnation in the United Kingdom. Board of Deputies senior Vice

President Richard Verber described the attack as a “brutal and cold blooded murder,” “We call on the Palestinian Authority to condemn this appalling attack and to end its daily incitement of terrorism against Israeli civilians, he said. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis tweeted: “Whilst the murder of Itamar Ben-Gal earlier today, will likely receive little attention in the international press, we will continue to grieve following each and every one of these wicked acts of terrorism. May his memory be for a blessing.”

Terror cell head killed in joint Israeli operation BY JAMES MARLOW AND ISAAC SHERMAN The head of a terrorist cell responsible for the murder of Rabbi Raziel Shevach last month was killed in an Israeli security forces operation in the early hours of Tuesday. Ahmed Nasser Jarrer was behind the ‘drive-by’ shooting on Route 60, close to the Israeli’s home in the community of Havat Gilad. Jarrer was shot as he ran towards security forces armed with an M-16 and a bag full of explosives. Shin Bet received intelligence that Jarrar was hiding in a complex of buildings in the village of Yamun, ﬁve miles west of Jenin, in the West Bank and moved in before 3am. Israeli troops also arrested accomplices who helped Jarrar hide and as they pulled out hundreds of Palestinian residents gathered at the scene. The governor of the Palestinian city of Jenin said Israeli authorities informed them that Jarrar was dead and he condemned Israeli forces for killing him. Clashes ﬂared up between Palestinians and Israeli forces in the

aftermath of the raid. IDF, Shin Bet and a Special Police Unit participated in the joint mission. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld conﬁrmed there Israeli casualties. “As a result of the operation the terrorist was shot and killed,” Rosenfeld said. Following Shevach’s murder on January 9th, a manhunt for Jarrar and his accomplices had taken place around Shechem and local villages. Commandos killed Ahmed Ismail Muhammed Jarrer, who participated in Shevach’s murder, eight days after the attack. They have also captured a third terrorist. Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman and President Reuven Rivlin all welcomed the operation. Netanyahu praised security forces for a “determined and complex operation”. “Several days ago, I told Rabbi Raziel Shevach’s widow that we would catch the murderers and last night the mission was completed,” he stated. Rabbi Shevach was a friend of

Netanyahu commented: “Security forces will catch whoever tries to attack Israeli citizens and we will deal with them to the fullest extent of the law. So it will be with the murderers of Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal.” “The account is closed,” commented Lieberman. “It was clear that it was only a matter of time, until we hit the head of the cell that murdered Rabbi Raziel Shevach. I hope and believe that in the near future we will also extend our hand to the murderer of Rabbi Itamar Ben Gal.” Lieberman accused the Palestinian leadership of supporting terrorism. “The terrorists are embraced by the entire Palestinian leadership.” he noted. “I’m not talking about Hamas, I’m specifically talking about Fatah. Coming to offer condolences over the death of the terrorist’s cousin were all of the senior Fatah officials. Lieberman also charged that the

perpetrators of the terror acts are seen as heroes. “There’s an enormous monetary incentive,” he added. “You have to understand that these terrorists’ families will immediately receive NIS 10,000 -12,000 to their accounts, which is ﬁve or six times the average wages in the PA.” Rivlin added: “We appreciate and salute all the security forces, who in a complex security operation and with proper daring, fought for our

NAJOS calls on Jewish parents to lobby the DFe on relationship education BY LEAH WAXLER

The National Organisation for Orthodox Jewish Schools (NAJOS) is calling on parents to respond to the Department of Education’s ‘call for evidence’ relating to the Children’s and Social Work Bill making relationships education compulsory in Primary and Secondary schools. The deadline for submitting evidence to the DoE is Monday, February 12 (11.59am). NAJOS has created clear guidelines for parents on its website (www.najos.org). Parents, who will have access to NAJOS guidelines, can submit relevant documents or email questions to NAJOS or the DFe. “For us to be able to promote the religious and moral values that we espouse parents need to ﬁll in the consultation document,” explained Judith Nemeth, NAJOS executive

Norwood Chief Executive Elaine Kerr officially opened the cafe on Tuesday, 30 January. The brand new facilities were made possible by the extraordinary fundraising efforts of Food For You, a North-West London based charity set up by a group of female Jewish friends and family in 2004 ,who are wellknown in the community for their philanthropic acts. Committee member Sara Morein sadly died in 2015 and the remaining members decided to release Simply Food For You, their fifth cookbook, in her honour, with the proceeds going towards the exceptional new facilities for Norwood. Food For You committee member Susie Kahn said: “The book was incredibly well received, which we’re all very excited about. We’ve sold around 1,500 copies

already and some of the recipes have now become home staples for people, which is great. “The refurbishment of Sara’s Kitchen has been remarkably eﬃcient, with it all happening very quickly. So today is very exciting, and also emotional obviously. Sara was so loved by us all and we really feel she would have been proud of what we’ve done,” continued Susie. Sara’s husband David Morein was at the event and said: “For her this would have been the perfect tribute to her memory, it’s fantastic. It encapsulates two of Sara’s main passions: a love of preparing delicious food and a genuine care and interest in helping others. My only sadness is that Sara had to die for all this to happen.” Norwood Chief Executive Elaine Kerr said that working with the Food For You committee “felt like a coming together of minds”. “Norwood and Food For You share so many of the same values, as well as both bringing something unique to the table: the love of food, the love of doing something

We can teach people to make dishes like soups and quiches, and also we’re busier as a café because we can serve hot meals. The people taking the training are very excited. At first they were a bit nervous because change can make people nervous, but now they’re really enjoying it.”

Poland cancels Bennett’s visit over Holocaust complicity remarks BY JAMES MARLOW

Education Minister Naftali Bennett’s diplomatic trip to Poland was cancelled hours after he announced his intention to assert Poland’s complicity in the Holocaust during his visit. In response to the cancellation, Bennett said, “I am honoured” after the Bayit Yehudi leader accused the Polish people of assisting in the murder of Jews during the Holocaust. “The Polish parliament voted to outlaw any such link between the Nazi ﬁnal solution policy and Pole involvement, making it a crime to link the two,” he added. Bennett was scheduled to visit Poland next Wednesday to address Polish students and meet with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Higher Education Jarosław Gowin. But earlier this week, Bennett announced he would make it clear that the past cannot be rewritten and that while thousands of Poles helped Jews during the war, many others participated in their persecution. “I am going to speak truth, where the truth took place,” he said. The

Polish government reacted by cancelling the visit.” After Bennett said he was “honoured” by the cancellation, he added, “The next generation has an important lesson to learn about the Holocaust of our people, and I will make sure they learn it. This decision by the Polish government will be a major part of the lessons of the Holocaust, even if they intended to achieve something else.” Bennett went on to admit that “indeed, the death camps in Poland were built and operated by

the Germans, and we cannot allow them to evade responsibility for these actions,” but reiterated his assertion that “many Polish people, all over the country, chased, informed or actively took part in the murder of over 200,000 Jews during, and after, the Holocaust.” He added that “Only a few thousand people, Righteous Among the Nations, risked themselves to save Jews. That is the truth. I agreed to a dialogue based on truth. The Polish government chose to evade this truth. No legislation will change the past,” Bennett said. The bill proposed by Poland’s ruling Conservative Law and Justice Party calls for fines and prison sentences of up to three years for purposely trying to attribute the crimes Nazi Germany carried out during the nearly six-year occupation to the Polish nation as a whole. Poland’s government is fighting against the use of phrases like “Polish death camps” to refer to the camps Nazi Germany operated on Polish soil. Poland has also sought to highlight its own suffering at the hands of the Nazis.

Polish Holocaust Bill decision slammed by Jewish organisations BY LEAH WAXLER

The European Jewish Association is to begin legal proceedings in Poland’s Constitutional Court against Polish President Duda’s decision to sign a Holocaust Bill that will impose jail sentences for suggesting the country was complicit in the Shoah. EJA chairman Rabbi Menachem Margolin noted on Facebook that the President of Poland, had ignored European Jewry and international community concerns in signing a “delusional” bill into law. Rabbi Margolin requested that President Duda should hold back on ratifying the legislation until a meeting with Jewish leaders could be organised. “It seems inconceivable that an EU member state can be permitted to whitewash history by imposing draconian legislation that can imprison people for holding an alternative view on what happened during Europe’s darkest days,” he explained. Jewish organisations and Israeli politicians around world had lambasted the proposed bill. This decision is certain to inﬂame those feelings in the coming days. Duda did note that the bill would

be referred for judicial review by Poland’s constitutional court offering a possibility that it might be amended. Fines and prison sentences up to three years are in the bill. The Board of Deputies was swift to condemn the new Polish law making it illegal to attribute Holocaust crimes to Poland, rather than Nazi Germany. “Although it is historically inaccurate to use the term Polish death camps - they were clearly established by the Nazis - we are concerned that this new law may be trying to play down the fact that many Poles were also perpetrators during the Holocaust,” said Vice President Richard Verber. “We of course acknowledge that Poles were victims too and indeed there are many Polish righteous gentiles - more than any other nation. However the facts are clear that Poles were involved directly and indirectly in the murder of many, many Jews. “It also appears to be a law that is almost entirely unenforceable, suggesting that it is more for political capital than historical truth.”

Holocaust Memorial Day

Rising Fears of Anti-Semitism

This year the national day marking the Holocaust was Shabbat 27 January. National Holocaust Day or “Holocaust Memorial Day” as it is now called, was instigated largely as a result of the eﬀorts of the Emeritus Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks.

Adam Moses’ outline (Issue of 1st Feb.16th Shevat) of the new CST report alongside the WJC warning about the alarming rise of anti-Semitism in Europe is sobering. The antidote does not lie with the criminal justice system nor with the political parties as his report cites.

It is with considerable disappointment and concern that we noted that many synagogues failed to mark the occasion by reciting any memorial prayers, or even referring to the occasion in any way. This is particularly ironic as most synagogues, on a Shabbat, recite memorial prayers marking the occasion of the passing of relatives of members or attendees. It is unlikely that 27 January (HMD) will fall on a Shabbat for some time, but we urge all synagogues to ensure that the occasion is not allowed to pass without even a mention. The antidote lies with ourselves as we see from the pattern of events described in the book of Judges, Shofetim. There the decline of the Israelites attachment to a Torah lifestyle and their leanings towards idolatry lead to a worsening of their lot. Their resulting desperation followed by repentance allowed G-d to improve their situation in a pattern that repeated itself over and over again. The current widespread decline, among large sections of the community, in the practice of a Torah lifestyle and the corrosion of Jewish values under the inﬂuence of the wider society is the direct cause of growing anti-Semitism. The increasing hatred is a wake-up call. If we heed the call with increased Torah and Mitzvot then the hatred will serve no purpose and will melt away. We must heed the call. Aish Young Professionals reach Jewish learning at Southend out to London’s homeless This week participants of the new young professionals programme ‘Aish Unﬁltered’ got together to enjoy a bagel brunch at the home of Rabbi Moshe and Liat Mayerfeld in West Hampstead, before preparing ‘survival packs’ to be distributed among London’s homeless population. The packs included: hats, socks, ﬁrst aid kits, sleeping bags, pillow, mattress and raincoats and were funded by a separate online crowdfunding campaign called ‘Change a Life’ that successfully raised over £700 in just a week. Participants split into teams of 2 and 3 and gave out over 30 packs

as well as some hot soup in the Piccadilly and Trafalgar Square areas, sharing stories, laughter and tears with some inspiring people who have experienced much hardship in life. Two of the volunteers, Jade Fox and Chen Pomeranz commented: “It was so moving to see how a simple act of kindness can help enrich someone’s life. It is so important to make a conscious eﬀort to proactively help people in need. Giving practical things like sleeping bags shows that someone is truly thinking about them and gives them one less thing to worry about.” Rabbi Eli Birnbaum added: “It is

Johnny and Damian kick cancer with 5K Run raising £4,750 for Chai On Sunday 4th February Johnny Maurer together with Damian Schogger and friends and family, completed a 5K run in aid of Chai Cancer Care. They have raised an incredible £4,750 so far, with the help of the amazing generosity of over 85 sponsors exceeding their initial target of £3,000. Johnny said: “I wanted to raise money for this amazing charity

with all of its wonderful volunteers who help cancer patients like myself and more importantly our families and the wider community who need them no questions asked just support and more support, thank you! I was diagnosed with cancer in September after having just completed my 6th chemo session (and hopefully the last before my

operation), I am feeling strong enough to do a 5K run with my friend and running guru, Damian, who has agreed to do a couple of training sessions with me, as I normally only run to my car and shul, of course! I hope with this run to give something back and help Chai with the incredible work they do.”

The zechus can break through the gates of Shomayim, allowing our tefillos to reach the Kisei Hakavod. After two uninterrupted hours of limud ha’Torah on leil Shushan Purim, five minutes is then dedicated to the Tefillas Rabim. It’s hard to imagine the koach of this tefilla, taking place immediately after such an uplifting seder. In the zechus of sanctifying this special day with so much extra Torah and tefilla, we should merit to see yeshuos, each one of us, where we need it most. Har Nof Kollel launches new initiative Purim ‘giving’ opportunites through GIFT “Adopt-a-Second” This Purim at least one thousand ﬁve hundred Avreichim are expected to once again take part in the Shavuos-Style Purim Kollel on Shushan Purim night. Purim is such a hectic time so it’s tremendously challenging and enormously diﬃcult to disconnect and learn for two whole hours. But for those who have previously experienced it, its immensely rewarding. The atmosphere in the Beis Medrash is electrifying and the ruach is indescribable. Purim Kollel is a division of The Har Nof Kollel, under the guidance of Maran Harav Chaim Kanievsky shlita and was established to encourage such learning sessions, particularly at times that often tend not to be properly utilized. The Kollel provides its Avreichim with stipends, meat and wine before Yamim Tovim and other special occasions. Historic Fathers and Sons Event Ladies’ Tu B’Shvat Seder A highly impressive event was held last Motzoei Shabbos, 3rd February, bringing together the Avot uBanim centres of all Charedi shuls in North West London. Attended by 2300 participants the siyum celebrated the learning of the entire 6 volumes of the Mishna under one roof, followed by a celebratory Melave Malka meal. The evening held at the Allianz Centre in Hendon saw fathers and sons ﬁrst studying the usual Avot uBanim session before the festive Siyum. The chairman for the evening Rabbi Nechemiah Jaﬀe of Edgware called on the noted Dayan, Rabbi Dovid Dunner to lead the Tehilim. The Hadran was recited by Yossi Lerner to whose great grandparents Mr and Mrs Zalman Noe the evening was dedicated by their daughter & son in law, Mr & Mrs Sholom Lerner. Kaddish was then said by Mr Sammy Rosenthal in memory of his mother, Mrs Brucha Rosenthal. In his inimitable style the huge crowd was inspired by the guest speaker, Rabbi Pinchos Schneelbag of Witznitz Yeshiva in Stamford Hill. Younger children who have not yet

started learning mishna were kept occupied by a special activity workbook. The older boys were given a specially printed booklet of their alloted Mishnayos and all enjoyed a meal of hot dogs and kugel followed by ice cream. Before benching a short video of the Gateshead Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Avrohom Gurwicz giving a pre-recorded message was shown. The evening which was hailed as a great success by all attendees is sure to remain in the memory for years to come.

Belmont synagogue WOW initiative welcomed over 70 women to their Tu B’shvat Seder on Monday night. The hall was packed with a diverse cross-section of the community and beyond, and the room was buzzing. The tables were laid beautifully with delicious fruits and salads, and under Rebbetzin Lisa Leven’s ever enthusiastic leadership, another exceptional WOW (women of worth) event was deemed a huge success. Preceding each of the four cups of wine, a speaker from the Belmont community, each one a WOW themselves, engaged the audience with an interesting and inspiring take on what Tu B’shevat means to them. Sarah Rose cleverly compared her growth and journey through life with the Tree of Life quoting a moving piece by Yoni Netanyahu. The other speakers and of course Lisa herself, were thought provoking and ﬁlled with positivity leaving everyone feeling uplifted and in great spirits. Rebbetzin Binstock from Raleigh Close interspersed the set events with music. She played her guitar and everyone sang their hearts out. It was delightful! The evening was a true demonstration of how, when women set their minds to it, they can create dynamic and exciting events that

Global initiative launched to encourage greater appreciation for Israeli Military in advance of 70th Anniversary In advance of Israel’s 70th anniversary celebrations, high schools around the globe are signing up to take part in an educational and social initiative to focus on a more complex side of the country’s existence and the personal price that wars have had on Israeli society and way of life. The initiative is being promoted in tandem with the groundbreaking new ﬁlm entitled When the Smoke Clears: A Story of Brotherhood, Resilience and Hope by Imagination Productions. The ﬁlm was recently featured at the Jewish Film Festival in Miami which highlighted Israeli

ﬁlms in advance of the 70th anniversary celebrations. The ﬁlm follows three soldiers, each seriously injured during a recent battle or war in Israel and the daily struggles they have emotionally and physically. Telling their story in their own words and through animation, the viewer goes on an emotional journey through anticipation of their life’s destiny as a soldier; fear during battle, the trauma of injury, survival and hope. “When you read in the paper about a soldier that got injured, you say ‘phew, at least he is not dead’. You don’t even think about what it

Looking forward to spring at Jewish Care School children celebrated the festival of Tu Bishvat, the new year for trees at the end of January, with residents of Jewish Care homes and community centre members. Customs for this annual festival include eating a wide variety of fruit, planting and nature based activities. In Golders Green, children from Menorah Primary School visited residents and day centre members at Jewish Care’s Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Campus where they sang, chatted and enjoyed new fruits together. Members of Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre planted spring bulbs on Friday. Neil Taylor, Director of Community Services at Jewish Care, said, “It’s so important to our residents and members to celebrate

‘Amazing’ Norwood supporters raise more than £155,000 at elite property awards dinner Some of the biggest names in the UK property sector were recognised at the YN Property Awards Dinner at the Hilton Park Lane hotel on Thursday, 1 February. The event, which saw 450 guests from across the industry, raised £155,000 for Jewish charity Norwood, which supports vulnerable children and their families, children with special educational needs and people with learning disabilities and autism. Introducing the evening, YN Property Committee Co-Chair David Jacobsen said the YN Property Awards Dinner was “without a doubt, THE event for young professionals in the property industry today”. “It is a night where we come together to recognise some of the best and brightest young talent in our industry,” he continued. “There is a striking parallel to be drawn between the property industry and Norwood. He’s living in a wonderful house in Edgware and he has a great life. Jake, who can’t talk, goes to work in an estate agent for three hours a week. That’s all because of Norwood and the support of all of you here tonight.”

Council boosts freedom of faith schools BY BRIAN GORDON The London Borough of Barnet , which has the largest Jewish population in the UK, has issued a forthright call to the Government to preserve the historic status quo regardng the teaching of sensitive issues at faith schools. The matter was debated at a full meeting of the Council last Tuesday, following a national consultation recently launched by the Department of Education. The consultation relates to the teaching of issues of personal relationships and “protected characteristics”, both at high school and primary school levels. A motion, passed unanimously by the 63-strong Council - 32 Conservative, 30 Labour and 1 Liberal Democrat - stated inter alia: “The Council very much recognises and values the diversity of faith schools within this Borough , notes the excellent achievements of many of them and would not wish to see these schools undermined. Council calls on the Government to allow faith schools to deal with the teaching of the said subjects in a manner consistent with their religious ethos, including the promotion of tolerance

and to ensure the safeguarding of children. Council requests the Government to ensure the Department of Education allows for this in its pending guidelines and to call on OFSTED inspectors to be sensitive and understanding of this when carrying out their inspections” Proposing the motion, Cllr Brian Gordon (Conservative) said the issue was vitally important to numerous residents of the Borough. Acknowledging the dangers of social media to children he explained that in the orthodox Jewish community its availability was strictly controlled and that indecent, explicit material was forbidden. He emphasised that Judaism, as with some other faiths, had its own inbuilt biblically prescribed forms of safeguarding which had withstood the test of time for thousands of years. Inasmuch as the current drive to teach about relationships and varied lifestyles was geared to tolerance, diversity and combatting extremism , Cllr Gordon emphasised that Jewish schools were entirely on board on these concepts. He said “Respect for other people’s cultures and beliefs , opposing prejudice and racism, and appreciating British values

of law observance, democracy and peaceful community relations are all an integral part of Jewish teaching. But when it comes to matters of intimate personal relationships and certain other lifestyles that conﬂict with biblical doctrines, respect for traditional beliefs has to be shown. It cannot be right for the schools of Jews,Catholics Muslims or any other religion to be expected to teach concepts that are in conﬂict with their own faith. Trying to compel them to do so is itself an act of intolerance and discrimination . It’s an unacceptable infringement of religious freedom”. The motion received support from Cllr Paul Edwards on behalf of the Labour Group. Referring to his own Catholic upbringing he said that the religious family values imparted to him, his adherence to certain fundamental values of right and wrong and his belief in G-d had helped shaped his view of fairness within society. He said that the children of today’s generation should not be denied those religious teachings if that is the will of their parents. But it should always be done “in a spirit of tolerance and respect for the beliefs and lifestyles

of others”. Council Leader Richard Cornelius (Conservative) said that the motion deserved the support of all sections of the hamber, especially in such a large and prominent borough with so many faith schools and diverse cultures. He said “Parents are the right people to choose the type of education best suited to their children. Faith schools are an important part of that choice. They were set up by religious organisations rather than by the state, with their own faiths and ethos as the foundation. They are usually among the best schools in the Borough. Government at all levels should not intervene unless something is

seriously wrong”. Cllr Gordon said afterwards “Barnet, under its current Conservative controlled administration, has once again taken the lead on an issue affecting our community, as it did in being the first to endorse the wider definition of antisemitism and calling for a total ban on Hezbollah. I hope other Councils will follow on this vital matter of faith schools, which are an integral part of this country’s educational freedom and success. We must fight to preserve and protect their purity and moral independence with all the power and democratic apparatus at our disposal”

Guests at World Jewish Relief’s Annual Dinner heard about some of the challenges facing the Jewish community there and the difference the charity has made in the past year. The dinner was hosted by art historian, writer and broadcaster Jacky Klein who told guests how she wouldn’t be alive today were it not for the British Jewish community supporting her grandfather when he fled the Nazis and arrived in the UK in 1939. Keynote speaker Philippe Sands QC told 500 diners how the charity had also helped his family when they fled the Nazis to begin a new life in

Britain. “It is an honour to be here tonight to support this extraordinary organisation,” he said. He spoke about his book East West Street and revealed that he had discovered the history of Lviv-born Raphael Lemkin, the Jewish lawyer who coined the term ‘genocide’, while researching a talk he had been asked to give at the University of Lviv in Western Ukraine. “I ended up teaching them that one of the most prominent ﬁgures in human rights history was not only from Lviv but had studied at the very university where I was now lecturing,” he said. World Jewish Relief’s Chair, Dan Rosenﬁeld, told supporters that he was sounding the alarm bell for Ukraine’s Jewish community.

For some that might be the answer, but for others it’s not. Or we can take responsibility and act. World Jewish Relief is about action. We are about the here and now, changing Jewish lives across Eastern Europe.” Chief Rabbi Mirvis, appearing in the fundraising video, said: “Giving [tzedakah] is central to our Jewish identity. Each and every one of us has it within our power to give in a remarkable way: to enrich lives, to help lives and to save lives.” Guests were told how in the past year World Jewish Relief has supported 42,899 people across 19 countries, repairing 327 Jewish homes, providing homecare for 2,397 older Jews and helping a further 7,086 people gain employment. Longstanding World Jewish Relief volunteer Harry Heber was presented with the inaugural Harry Heber Outstanding Volunteer Award to mark 20 years of volunteering for World Jewish Relief. Harry was only seven years old when he was

forced to flee the Nazis, arriving alone in Britain 80 years ago on one of the first Kindertransports and grew up to become an optician. In 1997, Harry read an article about how World Jewish Relief had rescued the Kindertransport children. Determined to give back to the organisation that saved his life, Harry became a World Jewish Relief volunteer and set up the World Jewish Relief Optical Programme when he discovered that thousands of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe didn’t have the gift of sight because they couldn’t afford glasses. Using his extensive experience, within a year Harry had dispatched 1,000 new pairs of prescription glasses to people who desperately needed them. The number has since grown to nearly 60,000 prescriptions in 15 countries. The award was presented to Harry by Hannah Layton, Chair of Young World Jewish Relief. The event raised more than £1.2m to benefit the world’s poorest Jews. Donations will support 18,000 older Jews with homecare and welfare programmes and put another 3,000 people through World Jewish Relief’s livelihood programmes to find a job and break the cycle of poverty forever. World Jewish Relief’s Chief Executive, Paul Anticoni, said: “I

Participants were split into European groups during the day - France, Germany, Italy and for activities. The girls were taught diﬀerent ways of greeting people, made African masks, Chinese lanterns

and their own pizza for dinner. They also enjoyed an improvised Shabbat Service and Chazan Alby Chait led a Havdalah service. Leah Serr was named ‘Best Brownie’ at the end of proceedings. Send your question to Rabbi@RabbiSchochet.com Biblical Questions Dear Rabbi, I came across your column online here in the States and have some Biblical questions which I wonder if you can answer: (1) Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians? (2) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacriﬁce, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? (3) I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

(4) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10 - it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Are there ‘degrees’ of abomination? (5) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of G-d if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20 or is there some wiggle-room here? (6) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? (7) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? (8) My uncle has a farm. Dear Rabbi, Do Jews believe in an after-life and, if so, could you kindly explain the nature of it. Martin Dear Martin, Rabbis Moshe & Chaim passionately debated this very question and indeed whether they also play tennis in heaven. They agreed that in the event that one would pass away they would return and report to the other in a dream. Months later Chaim passed away and after the shiva came to Moshe

The good news is that you were right all along, they do play tennis in heaven.” Moshe smiled smugly. “So what’s the bad news then?” “You’re playing centre court next week Friday!” To answer to your question in a word, “yes!” But to elaborate a little: Imagine that moment when, as you are sitting in your front row seat in synagogue the Chazan suddenly gets up to really belt it out – or the Rabbi suddenly mounts the pulpit to say a few words. You cannot walk out. There’s no escape – you have to sit there and endure. That would be the Jewish concept of ‘hell.’ Imagine if, as either begins they suddenly lose their voice and have to skedadle back to their seats. That would be the Jewish concept of heaven. To take that one step further; if you could imagine the most embarrassing moment in your life and then picture that being put on display for everyone to watch with you having to sit through it all – so too as your life is put into replay upon your passing from this world for one and all to behold – that overwhelming sense of shame is sheer hell. This applies not just to acts of commission but equally to omission: Imagine you bought a lottery ticket each week with the same numbers and then one week gave it a miss, just as the numbers come up – that compelling missed opportunity and overwhelming sense of disappointment multiplied by inﬁnity is hell as we know it. Conversely, the sense of pride you can imagine in all of your good deeds and positive actions – that is sheer bliss and heaven. So seize the moment now – and see you ‘later,’ if you know what I mean.

You might walk along the high street and notice the same familiar names popping up again and again and thinking how any small store can survive alongside the big brands. The high streets all over the UK are being swallowed up by large malls. Gone are the independent butchers, bakers, watchmakers and

all you see on every high street are the obligatory coffee shops of the main 3 or 4 brands all nestled next to each other and a Tesco local. The answer might surprise you; you can open a shop with a brand name UPS or 7- Eleven, because some of the well known high street brands are actually franchises. The benefits of opening a franchise goes beyond just brand recognition, it is also a support system According to Bloomberg, 8 out of 10 businesses fail in the first 18 months and the primary reason is a lack of understanding of the client. Contrast that with another statistic which is that less than 7 percent of franchise owners fail within the first 3 years. A new business has that crucial year to a year and half to pump resources into building up its loyal client base who will then hopefully spread the word further. The fact that a franchise comes with an almost ready clientele to tap into, can avoid that issue. The Brand has built up years of connection in the marketplace.

Another benefit is that even as small business owner you can compete with big business. Many new business owner are finding the benefit of getting a mentor to help them avoid business pitfalls. With franchises they provide the training to overcome the learning curve that would otherwise take years of “learning from mistakes” Another primary reason why businesses fail is because of cash flow reasons. Many cash flow issues result from issues that arise that you have not planned for. This again will be minimised with a Franchise. You might get the feeling that you could have achieved similar success had you started out on your own but the best way to look at it is that the franchise fee can be less that the cost of the unforeseen pitfalls that will eat into your cash flow. With the franchise you know how much the outlay and how much products will cost you. You also know what the outgoings will be and all you have to concentrate

This lady eventually signed up to an office supply franchise that had a call centre who not only took the calls but did the accounting and invoicing. That left her with dealing with customer service, deliveries and sales. Her actual running costs were relatively low. The split of profits were a third to the franchise owner and two thirds to her. The marketing and web marketing were all paid by the head office out of their third

and she was able to recoup her investment in a year. Each franchise has to be examined before signing on the dotted line. because not all franchises are equal one should do research by talking to other Franchisees of the brand. The success of the franchise will still depend on you the franchisee and your ability to run a business but make sure you have the support of the brand behind you. Look through all the small print and go through the terms with a legal professional to make sure that you are purchasing a means to success not a means to run into a legal dispute. Some franchises will employ slick sales tactics and treat you like royalty to interest you in the franchise but in order to cover themselves, they might bury clauses in their terms that absolve themselves from certain duties. Lastly bear in mind that “A great new franchise” is an oxymoron. A franchise should have years of trading behind it and not just the product of someone who dreamt up a catchy logo and tag line.

Dan’s Premier League Column BY DAN SILVER Incredible. Absolutely incredible. This is why I absolutely love this beautiful game. Never before have I seen such a jam packed 10 minutes of football. I’m talking about a game filled with VAR nonsense, goals from out of this world and pure quality bursting out onto our screens. Whether it was Mo Salah’s audacious quick footed goal or Wanyama’s absolute peach of a strike, you won’t have seen a game like this for a long time. Spurs were the better side on the ball in the first half but never looked like breaking Liverpool down, and I never thought for a second that they were going to score because of the way Liverpool denied Spurs space when they came forward, and looked to hit them on the counter-attack. With the pace of Mane, the quality of Bobby Firmino and the pure genius of Salah, when Liverpool went 1-0 up inside the first 3 minutes, I thought it was game over from then on. But knowing Liverpool’s shaky defence in the form of the unreliable Lovren and new boy Van Dijk, the game was always too close to call. It stayed 1-0 till half time but

things were very different in the second half. Tottenham began to take charge of the game after the break and the main reason for that was down to Liverpool running out of energy. They had put so much into the first half that it was inevitable it would catch up with them, so it was all about patience for Spurs. With Wanyama’s sensational goal and Mo Salah’s unbelievable strike, the game was thought to be over until up stepped Harry Kane with his 100th goal in the Premier League to make it all evens at 2-2. Whether you love him or loath him, I have not seen many better goal poachers than Kane and this game was clear evidence of that. Now I’m not one to praise Arsenal football club for their performances on or off the pitch for everything the club stands for is business first football second, but for them to sign a certain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will only do them wonders. The Gabonese striker, with whom I’ve had the pleasure of watching when he played in one of the most exciting matches of all time(!), a 0-0 draw against South Korea in the London Olympics, is one of the

deadliest players the footballing world has to offer. With his lightning pace and flamboyant flair, the 26 year old eats goals for breakfast and his debut against Everton showed that as he scored a lovely chip when they smashed the Blues 5-1 in an outstanding performance. The link up play between Auba, Mkhitaryan and Ozil is something all Premier League clubs should fear as although I’ve always rated Ozil, I was never too sure whether Miki would grasp the English game, but his performance proved me wrong. Three assists already and I can start to see why Arsenal fans are starting to gain a little bit of hope. Other results include Burnley clinching a late draw against leaders and soon to be Champions Manchester City after boss Pep Guardiola refused to blame Raheem Sterling for his side’s failure to beat Burnley after the England forward missed a glorious late chance to secure victory. Alexis Sanchez scoring his first goal for Manchester United as they comfortably beat Huddersfield to send the visitors into the Premier League’s relegation zone. And Watford scoring three late goals to win Javi Gracia’s first home game in

charge in an “unforgettable night” for their manager and increase the pressure on Chelsea counterpart Antonio Conte. But in the 6 weeks which I haven’t written my article in (and I don’t know how you’ve managed without it), I’ve had the pleasure of watching my team, Newcastle United, playing Chelsea in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge. One thing I may say is that there are no fans like the Magpies contingent, but however fantastic they may be, we were just awful. Honestly, my brain cannot get to terms with how that “striker”

Joselu is still playing football when the man could barely score even if the goal was wide open. It infuriated me and the whole of the Toon Army when Joselu stood up to take the penalty against Burnley as the whole crowd and I all proclaimed a harmonious whine, and guess what - he missed it. Although Joselu might still be playing for the Toon, new boy Kennedy has lit up St. James’s Park brings a tear to my eye to think that out of all my years watching Newcastle, I’ve never seen a player with so much skill.

Parshat Mishpatim Now that the Jews have received the Ten Commandments at Har Sinai and accepted the Torah, In this week’s parshah, we learn about 53 mitzvot in detail out of a total of 613 mitzvot in the Torah. So that’s quite a lot of mitzvot for one parshah out of 54! Some examples of the mitzvot mentioned in this week parshah are instructions about how one should treat their servant, the punishment for murder, kidnapping, and hitting or cursing one’s parents is a death penalty. If somebody hits somebody else and he gets hurt, he must pay damages. Someone who accidentally kills somebody else must go to a special city called an Ir Miklat( City of Refuge). Also mentioned is specific instructions on how to treat animals and the possessions that belong to other people, the commandment of being extra nice to strangers, widows, and orphans. The last mitzvah given in this parshah is that we must keep meat and milk separate. At the end of the parshah, Hashem promises the land of Israel to the Jews and Moshe goes up Har Sinai to get the Luchot (Tablets) from Hashem. He remains there for forty days and forty nights.

healthy apple cinnamon muffins

Ingredients:

• 1 1/3 cups white whole wheat • 1 tablespoon ground ﬂax • 1/4 cup melted unsalted ﬂour seeds butter • 3/4 cup old fashioned rolled oats • 1 small apple - grated with • 1/2 small apple - chopped into • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar peel 1/2-cm pieces • 3 teaspoons baking powder • 2 eggs • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon • 3/4 cup whole milk

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Grease or line a 24-hole mini muffin tin. 2. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, and flax seeds. Fold in the grated apples.

In a small bowl, beat the eggs. Beat in the milk and butter Pour the egg mixture into the batter, and fold together, being careful not to over mix. Mix in the chopped apples and cinnamon. Using a cookie scoop, evenly distribute the batter into the mini muffin tin, filling each muffin cup about 3/4 full.

7. Bake for 12 minutes, or until cooked in the middle and a toothpick inserted into the center of the muﬃn comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before transferring to a cooling rack.

Parshat Mishpatim In a Nutshell Following the revelation at Har Sinai, G-d legislates a series of laws for the people of Israel. These include the laws of how to treat one’s servant; the penalties for murder, kidnapping, assault and theft. We read of the importance of taking care of other peoples possessions. An unpaid guardian who does a favour to watch someone’s

possessions is not responsible if something happens to them. However, a paid guardian is responsible if it gets lost or stolen, but not if it’s stolen in an armed robbery. A borrower is responsible no matter what happens to it, except if the owner is with him when the object gets stolen or broken. The Laws for Courts and Judging are listed in detail We learn never to testify

falsely against somebody, and not to accept a false testimony from somebody else. Even if someone is very poor, you’re not allowed to rule in his favour just because you feel bad for him. Justice is justice no matter what our feelings are. We also learn never to accept bribery. We read about the laws of Shemitah; for six years we can work on the land but the

seventh year, we must give the land a break and not do any work on it. We read of the importance of keeping Shabbat, Pessach, Shavuot and Sukkot and ﬁnally the laws of seprating milk and meat. Altogether, the Parshah of Mishpatim contains 53 mitzvot - 23 imperative commandments and 30 prohibitions. G-d promises to bring the

people of Israel to the Holy Land, and warns them against assuming the pagan ways of its current inhabitants. The people of Israel proclaim, “We will do and we will hear all that G-d commands us.” Leaving Aaron and Chur in charge in the Israelite camp, Moshe ascends Har Sinai and remains there for forty days and forty nights to receive the Torah from G-d.

News Bites HUNTER KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS BY BIRD THAT FELL FROM SKY AFTER BEING SHOT A hunter was knocked unconscious after being struck by a dead goose that had been shot and fell from the sky. Robert Meilhammer, 51, suffered a “severe head injury” after his hunting group fired at a flock of Canadian geese in Easton, Maryland. One goose fell about 90ft to the ground and hit Mr Meilhammer, knocking him out and causing head and facial injuries on

Friday, Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources said. When he came round, he was able to say who he was but was “hazy about other details”, the department said in a statement. He is now in a stable condition. It added that Mr Meilhammer “suﬀered a severe head injury” and was taken by ambulance to Easton Airport, where he was airlifted to Baltimore for treatment.

Debra Suierveld mourned her dog Abby when she ran away from the family home in Apollo, Pennsylvania, a decade ago. Despite the dog being microchipped, they didn’t hear anything about the belov-

ed dog’s whereabouts. But last week, Abby turned up about 10 miles away on the front porch of George Spiering. Three British backpackers have been rescued from rising flood-waters in Australia after waking up to find they had parked their campervan in a crocodile warning area. The group were found on the roof of the vehicle when emergency services arrived at the scene off a highway south of Cairns, Queensland, on Tuesday morning. The state’s waterways are home to salt-water crocodiles, the largest species of the fearsome reptiles that are known to

Up, up and away

PART 3

BY CHAYA SANDLER Recap: Callie and Phoebe go on a school trip to a coin museum. Masked men come looking for the 1943 copper cent. For some reason, Phoebe grabs it and runs away, they are chased into a hot air balloon, Phoebe is hanging over the side and they are about to hit an electricity pylon.

The rope burned in my hand. If I wanted to avoid the electricity pylon then I would have to throw over the tarpaulin that was on the other side of the balloon. That might give us enough height to miss it. Problem is, I would have to let go of Phoebe…. No Way. So we were going to crash then. The pylon came closer and closer. There was no way we could miss it anyway, it was too high. I’d never seen such a massive electricity pylon before, but I had no time to think. So I didn’t. I jumped and we fell. The fall lasted eternity.

The fall passed in a heartbeat. It took about 5 minutes during which time I had time to think about how much I loved Phoebe and how much I really, really hated her right now. My last thought was, we are going to die by falling into a bakery. My next thought was, a bakery! The next thought was this is a rubbish last thought. I then decided that these weren’t my last thoughts technically. Then I realised I was wasting my last thoughts. Then I realised we were going to miss the bakery. Then we landed in the skydiving chamber. I say landed but it was more like ended up being suspended and bounced about in the air. -------------------------------------------------We stumbled out. Clinging to each other. Phoebe, for once, was silent. “Callie… Callie… I love you so much…. Callie we’re alive….” The bile rose in the back of my throat. Anger flared and burned. I flung Phoebe off me and she swayed, confused. “Callie, w, w, what-“ “WHAT?! I’ll tell you what,” I was screaming but I didn’t care. I was mad with rage, it consumed every fibre, all I could feel was the seething wrath. I couldn’t even speak anymore. I glared at Phoebe and hissed out, “this is your fault.” She paled. “I’m sorry, I, I didn’t-“ “ – You didn’t WHAT! Think? No, you didn’t think, you dragged us into this ridiculous mess for , for, I don’t know! Just, just stay away from me.” “Callie listen-“

“No. no.” I stepped back, shaking with rage. I turned around. Phoebe reached for my shoulder, called after me but I ran. Something registered in my head, something screamed for attention, something yelled sense. I wasn’t interested. Somewhere in the back of my head I knew that the streets were…wrong. Though it was only when my body eventually gave up and collapsed onto the pavement, heaving and shaking with released tension and fear, then it hit my consciousness. We weren’t in Kansas anymore. Or to put it this way. This looked a lot more like Paris than England. So... that electricity pylon, it wasn’t an electricity pylon. It was more like the Eiffel Tower. Oh boy. Ah ha. So, I’m lost in Paris, check. I don’t know where Phoebe is, check. I don’t speak French, check. It couldn’t get worse. Now, lesson for life. Never curse yourself with that greatest curse of them all. It can’t possibly be worse. Of course it could. I picked myself up and shook myself down/ All I have to do is find a policeman. Who will probably section me but, whatever, it’s my only chance. I could try finding another Jew but I have no idea where the Jewish community is around here or whether anyone would believe me. I peered into a car mirror. My hair was a mushroom cloud. Wisps of smoky tendrils curled around my head, spiky sticks shot up and the rest was an over tangled forest that would be OTT for any drama. My face was, er, not exactly at its most presentable and my jacket was ripped. Cool.

So I trekked oﬀ, meandering around alleyways, aiming for some sort of thoroughfare. It was then I noticed the creepy, suspicious looking men in black. These were clichés straight out of any poorly imagined thriller. They loomed. There was no other word to describe them. They hovered behind, giving the impression of being about to pounce on me. There was another one across the street. Three in total. Non-descript, wearing sunglasses for goodness sake! In hindsight I was very stupid. At the time I was tired, annoyed and hungry. Which is why I whirled around suddenly and grumped, “what?!” In hindsight, that was a very, very bad idea. TO BE CONTINUED

Ohr L’Neshama

Ohr L’Neshama is a new Jewish support group for women and their families who have unfortunately experienced miscarriages, stillbirths and infant loss. Briana Simon, originally from the USA first came up with the idea of Ohr L’Neshama when sadly her pregnancy ended at 16 weeks. She turned to a close friend who guided her to Renee Schurder. Briana Simon commented “When I lost my baby last year I felt my world turn upside down. I felt broken. When I eventually fell in touch with Renee, she made the world of difference.” Renee Schurder, a popular woman in the Jewish community is known for her outstanding amount of kindness and is the founder of Yad La’em; a support group for young mothers. Renee Schurder said “Ohr L’Neshama is here to help mums going through these difficult challenges and to know they are not alone. When a mother is facing such a vulnerable challenge in her life, we want to aid with the basic necessities for her and her family to give them a chance to continue with their day to day errands. Whether it be the shopping, cooking or taking care of their children, we are here for them, giving them time to come

to term with their loss”. Briana Simon further explained how she felt she got the emotional and physical support required and she wanted to replicate this service to other women who regrettably have to deal with this but have no one to turn to. “This is why I came up with the idea of creating Ohr L’Neshama; we want to oﬀer a helping hand to assist with the domestic needs of grieving families allowing them to focus on the path to recovery” said Briana. Sara Benbassat, an active member of Ohr L’Neshama, tragically lost her baby at full term after giving birth 15 year ago. She explained “When my baby passed away I felt completely alone and had no idea where to turn for support, if an organisation such as this existed 10 years ago, it would have lifted some of the pain” Sara, who works for Jami will be one of the women who will assist in peer support and the buddy system. EXCEL NURSERIES For many working mothers, finding full time Jewish childcare for their young children can be tricky, and this was definitely the case for fulltime working mum of 4, Odette Wohlman. Previously, she had sent her daughters to a full day non-Jewish nursery based over in Golders Green that served Kosher supervised food, but she felt that having something closer to her home in Essex, with a Jewish ethos, would be better for both her and her husband, Alan, and her children. At two years old, her daughters attended a local Jewish nursery that operated from Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School (WIJPS) in Barkingside. Unfortunately at the end of 2015 this nursery closed and there wasn’t another alternative, so along with her husband, they began to do some research and carried out a survey in the local area. From this information, it became evident that there was a need for a full day Jewish nursey and so they set about starting one in the area. Although, neither Odette nor her husband, Alan, had a background in education, they were very passionate about making this work, and were keen to find someone else who shared their enthusiasm for the idea. That someone was Julia Maynard who with over 17 years’ experience in Early Years Education, and also the owner of her own Early Years recruitment agency, was the perfect partner. When the couple approached her about being involved and began to understand the need and reasoning behind the venture,

she soon realised the potential. Julia explains, “Qualifying at a degree level in Leadership in Practice in Early Years equipped me with the knowledge to support my experience and focus on developing the best nursery possible and providing the best care.” Julia along with her partner, Adeola, became directors with Odette and Alan and Excel Nurseries was formed. Planning started approximately two years ago and on the 2nd January this year, all of their hard work and planning paid oﬀ and Excel Nurseries opened its doors at Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School, located on the Kantor Campus site in Barkingside, Ilford. Odette comments, “The response so far has been phenomenal, and everyone that is using the service has said how delighted they are to have a full day Jewish nursery; something that was very much needed in this area.” The nursery oﬀers childcare from 7.30am until 6pm all year round, which means parents working in Central London are able to

drop their children off on the way to work for breakfast club, and can collect them on their way home without too much disruption to their normal working day. The Kantor Campus is well located as it is just 3 minutes walk to Fairlop Station. The nursery is open during the week, but naturally closes early on Fridays during the winter, and is not open on Yomim Tovim. It offers spaces for children from birth to 4 years old, with a variety of sessions aimed to meet the needs of the parents. The morning session runs until 1pm, and the afternoon session is until 4pm which coincides with the end of the school day meaning that parents can collect siblings at the same time. The longest session is until 6pm. The food provided at the nursery is Kosher, and the hot meals are prepared in the kitchen at Woodford Forest Synagogue by a fabulous catering team. Odette along with the rest of the catering team have been working on the menu based on feedback from the staff, parents and children, to ensure the meals are delicious and nutritional for the children. One of the key aims of the nursery is to enhance Early Years education, and they are working closely with WIJPS. As well as activities and crafts, there are also regular phonic classes to help children to develop a better understanding of the sounds of words and letters, which will help with reading and writing development. The hope is that every child will leave the nursery confident in recognising words and letters, setting them in good stead for when they begin school. Ben Saltman, Chair of Governors at Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School said “WIJPS have welcomed Excel Nurseries on to our campus and acting as a feeder for our school. It was vital to the school to find a partner with a long term commitment to providing a

high quality level of education for local Jewish students in Redbridge with a matching ethos, and we believe we have found the ideal partner.” There is an emphasis on Jewish education with pupils learning brachot for snacks and meals as well as other basic prayers and songs. They are currently recruiting for a Jewish Studies lead to help develop this area of the nursery further. The belief is that by having the nursery on the Kantor Campus, both the Jewish primary school, and the Jewish secondary school will both see an increase in students and beneﬁt from a Jewish nursery acting as a feeder for them. Parents like to be kept informed of their child’s progress throughout the day, and Excel Nurseries have invested in software that allows the parents to receive updates from the nursery team. At the end of each day, parents also receive a report on their child showing activities completed, food they have eaten, when they have slept and even how many nappy changes, along with photos and videos to show how happy their child is. Julia explains, “This is a great way for the parents to connect directly and not feel like they are missing out, and it is all accessible on an App on their phones which makes it really easy to use.” Odette and Alan are well-known for being a very community minded couple, and they are keen to give back to the community. They want to make a diﬀerence not only for their own children, but for other children and parents in the community and the area as a whole. Alan is so passionate about this that he has given up his role at Jewish Care to focus fulltime on Excel Nurseries. Working with Julia has been a great experience for Odette, and she is really pleased with the way things are working. “Julia is so passionate and enthusiastic about the nursery and is truly amazing

at what she does. As a director of the business, I am really proud of what we have all achieved so far.” She is also very grateful to those within the local community who have given their help and expertise in order to make this nursery a success. Excel Nurseries have a unique approach that allows them to operate from both existing and new settings within both schools and communities to grow and provide for their families. As well as being directors, both women, are parents ﬁrst and foremost, and their children attend the nursery. Having this personal connection means that they are even more determined to make the nursery the best it can be, so that all the children that attend have the best start in life. As you travel down from the Capital be sure to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park. A maze of paths, woods and meadows revolves around 16 sparkling lakes and crashing waterfalls at Plitvice. It’s a World Heritage site and Croatia’s most popular national park – also much loved by its resident bears and wolves and over 120 species of birds. The archaeological evidence can be found in what is known as Zidovski Prolaz (“Jewish Passage”), a small street in the north-western part of Diocletian’s Palace.
