GOVERNMENT PLEDGES TO PROTECT JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN THE UK BY ADAM MOSES Home Secretary Amber Rudd has promised to protect the Jewish community in Britain from terrorist threats. Ms Rudd was speaking at the annual Community Security Trust reception in London on Wednesday and in her keynote speech reaﬃrmed the Government’s commitment to challenging all forms of hate crime whether it is online or oﬄine. As part of that pledge, following concerns from the Jewish community, she has awarded £13.4m for security at communal Jewish sites in 2018/19. Establishments include faiths schools, synagogues and community buildings. “Britain is so much richer for its diversity and if you’re Jewish you should be able to go about your daily life and express your religion without

fear of hatred or anti-Semitism,” said the Home Secretary. “CST is an important partner in ensuring Jewish life continues unfettered in our country. “It is absolutely essential that we all feel safe where we live, where we work, where we worship and where we meet our friends.” Ms Rudd added: “Daesh and Al-Qaida continue to highlight Jews among lists of targets in their propaganda, as well as the public at large. “That’s why this Government has provided over £38.5m for protective security measures in response to the terrorist threat since 2015.” The £multi-million award comes after CST recorded 1,382 anti-Semitic incidents in the UK in 2016/17, the highest total recorded in a calendar year. “The Home Secretary typiﬁes this Government’s strong practical and moral support for British Jews at a time of rising anti-Semitism and extremism,” said CST chairman Gerald Ronson.

As the dust settles following the Manchester Arena bombing, more details have emerged about the catastrophe, as leaders from around the world continue to oﬀer their tributes and condolences. Police say that 22-year-old Salman Abedi, a student at Salford University, blew himself up as American singer Ariana Grande had just ﬁnished performing her last song on stage. The casualties were high, with 22 people murdered so far, 59 injured, some critically, and children as young as 8 years old being counted among the dead. The attack took place at just after 10.30pm on Monday night in a public area just outside the entrance to the Manchester Arena next to Victoria station. Manchester is home to the second largest Jewish community in Britain and several terror attacks have been foiled by the security forces in the past few years including an

attack to target synagogues. Condemnation from world leaders was swift as the number of deaths were continuing to rise. Prime Minister Theresa May gave a statement outside Downing Street, where she condemned the “appalling” terrorist attack, as “one of the worst terror attacks the UK had seen.” She said that the city had fallen victim to “a callous terrorist attack,” and that her thoughts and prayers were with all the victims, families and friends of those aﬀected.” President Donald Trump who was visiting Bethlehem to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, told the media that “this wicked ideology must be obliterated.” He went on to say how “all innocent lives must be protected, and my thoughts are with the people of Manchester.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Shock and horror is how so many responded to last Saturday nights devastating attack on London Bridge as details are still emerging of the three Jihadi attackers who have all been named. But questions remain over why two of the three terrorists were known and flagged to security services but nothing was done about them. Italian authorities say they informed British police and MI5 about the third terrorist, but it seems because more than 3000 other potential radical Islamists were being watched, these three individuals were not deemed dangerous. Dozens of people across the country have since been detained but many have now been released as police identified the brutal killers just hours after 50 bullets were pumped into their bodies last Saturday night. Armed with foot-long knives and wearing fake suicide bomb vests during the deadly rampage, Britain suffered it’s third separate Islamic terror attack in just over two months. One terrorist last Saturday night is reported to have shouted “this is for my family, this is for Islam” as he stabbed victims, while another

said “this is for Allah” as he knifed a man near a pub. Since 22 March, 34 innocent people have been killed and more than 200 have been injured in the three terrorist attacks. Never before has a British general election campaign been suspended twice due to the suicide bombing at the Manchester Arena and last weekend’s vehicle and stabbing attack on London Bridge and its surrounding streets. At least during the height of the IRA bombing campaign on the mainland in the seventies and eighties, the terrorists gave a coded warning to police so they “sometimes” had time to evacuate innocent people. But extremist attacks such as these can strike at any time with absolutely no warning. Security and emergency forces were swift in arriving at the scene of the attack last weekend with years of regular preparation for such a scenario and in doing so saving many more lives. From the time police received telephone calls that a vehicle had hit pedestrians on London Bridge, it took an armed unit just eight minutes to reach the scene, identify the terrorists and shoot all three assailants dead.

A dog named Daisy raised the alarm last Sunday morning on Golders Green Road and probably saved the lives of at least two people. But sadly Daisy, a cross between a poodle and a cavalier, was overwhelmed with smoke inhalation and died in the flat. Events unfolded quickly when smoke was spotted by a passerby who entered the newspaper store next door to Kay’s kosher grocery store after 7 a.m. Within a few minutes fire services arrived as families in flats above were hanging their children out of windows, screaming for help. Alex Gibson and his pregnant wife Charlotte had been woken earlier by Daisy, who had been barking intensely. The flat above Kays was filled with black smoke as panic set in and the dog continued to bark. Mr Gibson smashed a window just before fire engines arrived but then saw they were able to get out through the rear stairs. In the confusion the dog ran back into the flat and hid behind some furniture. At that point a fireman raced up a ladder to take toddlers to safety from the window, but he himself was eventually overcome with
