Over the past few years, I’ve been on a wellness journey that has slowly brought me back to my yoga mat, inspired me to eat healthier, and reminded me just how important it is to prioritize myself. That’s exactly the energy I wanted to infuse into The Spring 2025 Jilly Box.

This season’s box is your gentle nudge to create new routines and embrace self-care—without the pressure to do too much all at once! Think of it as an invitation to do what feels good for YOU. And what better time to start than spring? Don’t you agree? For me, spring always feels like the perfect season to shake things up and try something new, even if it’s in the smallest ways. Whether it’s slipping into something cozy, pampering your skin with a little TLC, or finding moments to practice mindfulness, every item in this box was curated to help you feel good—inside and out.

Birdie Bars

Life is busy and I love nothing more than an easy healthy snack to have in the house that I grab on the go and also that Leo and Annie actually like too! I originally created this recipe for my Fraiche Foods, Fuller Hearts cookbook when Tori and I fell completely in LOVE with an oat bar at one of our favourite coffee shops. This recipe is an utterly perfect seedy oat bar that is easy to make and is guaranteed to be loved by everyone in your house!

Makes about 20 bars

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

½ cup (125mL) unsweetened non-dairy milk

¼ cup (60mL) ground flaxseed

3 cups (750mL) old-fashioned rolled oats, divided

2 cups (500mL) unsweetened shredded coconut

½ cup (125mL) hemp hearts

¼ cup (60mL) chia seeds

¼ cup (60mL) sesame seeds

2 teaspoons (10mL) cinnamon

¼ teaspoon (1mL) salt

¾ cup (175mL) coconut oil

½ cup (125mL) brown rice syrup

½ cup (125mL) lightly packed brown sugar

2 teaspoons (10mL) pure vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 325F (160C) and line a 13 X 9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

2. In a small bowl, stir together the milk and flaxseed. Set aside for 5 minutes.

3. In a food processor, pulse 2 cups of the oats until finely ground. Add the remaining 1 cup oats, coconut, hemp hearts, chia seeds, sesame seeds, cinnamon, and salt and pulse once or twice just to mix. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl.

4. In a small saucepan, combine the coconut oil, brown rice syrup, and brown sugar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.

5. Pour the coconut oil mixture and the flaxseed mixture over the oat mixture. Mix well. Scrape the mixture into the prepared baking pan and evenly and firmly press onto the bottom of the pan.

6. Bake until light golden brown around the edges, about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 15 minutes.

7. Once cooled, cut into bars using a large, sharp knife.

Mahara Mindfulness

Journaling is something that I’ve been bringing into my routine, I’ve actually been really inspired by Justin who journals every morning! I know, impressive, right!! It’s so good for our mental health, sitting in the present while also setting goals for our future. I absolutely LOVE The Human Being Journal that Sheba Zaidi and Genevive Savundranayagam have put together, trust me they have truly thought of every detail for this journal. From the questions and quotes, to the luxurious quality of the book, I know you all will love it just as much as we do! And, since this journal will be new to some of you, I thought it would be perfect to hear from Sheba and Genevivie about their journey of Mahara Mindfulness and how best to utilize the journal.

So, without further ado, let’s dive into the interview…

For those folks just getting introduced to Mahara Mindfulness, can you tell us a bit about your brand?

Mahara Mindfulness is a contemporary lifestyle brand offering products and experiences that provide people a stepping-stone into a world of mindful practices and personal transformation. From years of personal experience with journaling, meditation, and breathwork, we came to deeply understand the immense healing power of a lifestyle rooted in mindfulness and wanted to share that with others. This led us to creating our first product, The Human Being Journal.

We created The Human Being Journal to help people live more examined and fulfilled lives. If there’s one thing we’ve learned these past few years, it is that our time is limited, and you can’t hack your way to a dream life. Prioritizing mental health and living more mindfully is more important than ever before.

What inspired you both to start Mahara Mindfulness?

Our intention with launching Mahara and The Human Being Journal is to help people unlock their purpose and close the gap between where they are and where they want to be.

What got us most excited about creating this journal is that despite being avid journalers ourselves, we never found one on the market that met our current needs. Everything was either solely focused on productivity or trying to hack gratefulness, and we wanted something that could marry the two. We also knew that journaling was scientifically proven to help manage stress and anxiety, so we knew we’d be making a difference in the mental health space. And lastly, we knew we wanted to create something that

was monthly and non-dated so busy people could seamlessly incorporate it into their lives.

What made you both want to switch from the corporate world to starting your own business?

We’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a shared vision to create a business with real impact. After six years of working together on a side hustle – a wine tour business (which we recently sold!), we knew we’d make a great team. Together, we decided to pursue our own path—a mission-driven company led with kindness.

You launched Mahara Mindfulness in 2020, what have been your key learnings?

Know your WHY: On bad days you need to be able to come back to your “why.” What is driving you to solve this problem? Why do you care to put your blood, sweat and tears into this every day? For us at Mahara, our intention was clear from the start. It was deeply personal — we wanted to make a meaningful difference in the world and inspire humanity to live mindfully.

Stay measured: Early in our launch days we remembered one particular 48-hour period where we got three pieces of amazing news back-to-back. However, all of this positive news had come off the heels of a few difficult weeks (and in the height of COVID!). Our biggest takeaway from that was the understanding that running a business requires a kind of tenacity and resilience because there will be days where you will experience high highs and others where there will be low lows. You have to be able to navigate the emotional pendulum of building a business with a measured attitude. Keep perspective: Perspective for us is defined by the ability to ask yourself; will this issue be important in five days, five weeks or five years? And accordingly, assign the accurate weight to the problem at hand. Perspective allows you to remain optimistic, while keeping your eye on the long game. Having perspective helped us manage extreme shipping delays resulting from COVID, deal with damaged inventory, not having warehouse space to store product (so we converted our apartment into one!), and so on. We knew these struggles were part of our journey and that in a few years we will be able to look back and appreciate the lessons we learned during these early years.

When you both found out your journal was going to be in The Jilly Box, what was your reaction?

We were over the moon! We have been fans of Jillian Harris since her Bachelorette days (she was our favorite bachelorette to date!) and we’ve loved following her journey as she went on to create a business and brand that is so intentional, authentic and mission driven.

We share so many of the same values as The Jilly Box when it comes to embracing diversity, empowering women, inspiring communities, managing mental health, giving back and living with intention. Being able to partner with Jillian and The Jilly Box is a dream for us and something we manifested when we launched in late 2020. We love when the stars align!

Do you have some tips for how best to use The Human Being journal?

Our advice to people who have never journaled is: just start. Once you begin, you may fall in love with

the process of learning more about yourself and develop a rich relationship with your inner world. The structure and flow of The Human Being Journal is non-judgmental and guided. It simply feels like a good friend walking you through the process.

What is the best way of using the Human Being Journal?

Self-discovery is an exciting journey and we always say that the one person you will spend the most time in this life with is yourself – so we should learn to love ourselves. We consciously created a journal that not only allows you to go inward, but it allows you to change your mind along the way and is done in a non-judgmental way. We want you to show up to your journaling practice ready to feel most like yourself.

We encourage people to take their time with the first part of the journal where you are level setting. It is important to take stock of where you are, so you know where you want to go. Our advice for the first section is to not rush through it but to really reflect and go deep.

To reap the benefits of journaling, like any mindfulness practice, is to be consistent. Right at the start of our journal we make you choose a specific time of the month that you will set aside to dedicate to your practice. We always say if you do the journal from start to finish for 12 months, it will change your life. The best way to stay consistent is to incorporate this practice into an existing routine. For us, Sundays are our self-care days, so we make sure we set aside time on the last Sunday of every month to complete our deep dive. Find a time that you can realistically stick to.

Create Balance in Your Everyday Life

I often get asked how I manage to juggle everything—work, family, self-care, travelling, and all the other little things that fill my day. And if I’m being honest, some days it feels like I’m barely keeping my head above water! But, over the years, I’ve learned a few key things about creating balance and wellness.

First of all, I want to be super clear; balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about figuring out what works for YOU and learning to let go of the idea that you have to do it all, all at once. Life is chaotic and unpredictable (especially with kids), and no one can be 100% “on” all the time. What’s important is finding harmony between your personal life, your work, your relationships, and your well-being. So, if you’re feeling a little out of balance right now, don’t stress! You’re not alone, and you’ve got this. Here are some of my tips:

Prioritize Your Well-Being. I know it sounds cliché, but taking care of YOU has to come first. If you’re running on empty, there’s no way you can show up for the people or things that matter most to you. I’ve learned that when I make my wellbeing a priority—whether it’s getting enough sleep,

eating well, or carving out time for self-care—I feel so much more energized and grounded. So, whether it’s a morning yoga session, a cup of coffee in peace before the world wakes up, or a bath at night, prioritize making time for the things that recharge you.

Set Boundaries (And Stick To Them!). This is a big one for me—especially when you’re passionate about what you do (like I am with my work, my family, and everything in between). But, over time, I’ve learned that I need to set boundaries to keep my mental and physical health in check. This might mean saying no to extra projects when you’re already stretched thin or taking time off from social media when you need a break.

Embrace the Little Moments. I’ve realized that life is made up of the little moments, especially watching Leo and Annie grow up so quickly! It’s about the fun family moments at home, the self-care girls nights or the quiet cup of tea in the morning—those are the things that add up to feeling truly balanced. Remember to stay in the present and enjoy what you have now!

Simple Steps for Optimum Wellness in Your Home

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s how much the environment we surround ourselves with impacts our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Your home is where you recharge, relax, and nurture your mind and body. So, I encourage all of you to make it a space where you feel COZY! Whether you’re looking to boost your mood, get better sleep, or just feel more connected to your space, there are SO many simple ways you can style your home to foster an environment that supports your overall well-being. Here are my three recommendations on getting started:

STEP ONE

Create a calm and cozy space for you: My bedroom is totally my zen place! I LOVE having my bed made everyday with cozy sheets and lots of pillows, I find that when I make the bed every morning it gives me an easy accomplishment and makes me feel so excited to get into bed at night! There is nothing better than getting into a cozy bed and relaxing at night.

STEP TWO

Declutter to distress: I posted a blog on my website at the end of last year about working with the Go Simplified team on organizing The Jilly Box office, I recommend giving it a read as there are great tips in there for organizing and decluttering your home. I find when my house gets overloaded with stuff I start to feel anxious and I think that’s a common feeling so I always try to do big ‘spring cleaning’ throughout the year.

STEP THREE

Incorporate soothing scents: Want to feel like you’re at a spa while at home? Light your favourite candle or turn on your diffuser. This is such a game changer in just making me feel more calm and relaxed at home. Scent is one of our main senses in our body!
