Among the metals silver accessories and artefacts has been the most popular. From ancient times, silver has been utilized for a variety of practical and decorative purposes: it has been used as money, and yet also as a material from which to craft jewellery, hollow- and atware, objects and even whole pieces of furniture.

In primeval times, the raw silver was a lot tougher to come by than other precious metals, such as gold. For this purpose, it was considered exceptionally precious and used sparsely to create jewellery and small objects, often devotional in character.

AMBIKA NARAYAN

For a volatile and an unpredictable industry as the jewellery industry in India, the massy way of doing business, characterised by quantity, the number of brick-mortar stores, presence across the country and/or abroad, increasing walk-ins and so on would be the points that would top the list and drive the owners frantic. However, for business partners Sanjeev Mehta and Ambika Narayan of Apranje Jewellers, focus points were crystal clear from the beginning: craft exclusive, personalised jewellery that will stand the test of time and let in new clients only through referrals which in turn will pave way for meaningful customer relationships.

“I followed my father’s footsteps. He started his jewellery business in 1961 and was called the family jeweller, one who’s like a personalised jeweller, like how every household has a family doctor. I wanted to build a relationship

The beginning of it all Acting on his calling of crafting fine jewellery, Sanjeev Mehta returned from Mumbai, after seven years of training at a Diamond Manufacturing Company and relocated to Bengaluru to be the modern personalised family jeweller (jeweller who would sell exclusive jewellery by going to houses in olden days). He particularly quotes, “I followed my father’s footsteps. He started his jewellery business in 1961 and was called the family jeweller, one who’s like a personalised jeweller, like how every household has a family doctor. I wanted to build a relationship with my clients based on trust and wanted to be the go-to jeweller for fine diamond jewellery. I have strived for this from the beginning. with my clients based on trust and wanted to be the go-to jeweller for fine diamond jewellery. I have strived for this from the beginning. In 1996, from a small space in a renovated area from my residence.”

Ambika enters the scene in the year 1997 and Apranje was soon born. Like every new beginning, this one had challenges too. In Ambika’s own words, “My transition was gradual yet completely new for me; I moved from interacting with men and machinery to women and jewellery. However, everyone trusted me to do complete justice to the jeweller role and I was hands-on on the floor from Day 1.” The first three years were all about learning the ropes, building trust with customers and her knowledge building.

customer service and taking inputs from customers. Sanjeev says, “Wealth is the warmth you share after years,” and enjoys the company of people from all three generations of a family.

Looking ahead Apranje has never looked at the business in terms of quantity. It abides by the founding principle of quality over quantity. They say, “We definitely don’t want to compete on price but would like to compete on design, on the kind of unique jewellery we do. We haven’t said no to any customer so far and have always welcomed customers of all jewellery needs – be it solitaire rings, bridal jewellery or simple nose stud.” Even when the requests for gold jewellery have been there for a long time, Sanjeev and Ambika don’t want to diversify and get distracted. They want their jewellery to make a statement and look forward to having the company of more jewellery connoisseurs at their store. Sanjeev and Ambika, after 22 years of being jewellers, are even more focused on creating diamonds pieces that will become heirlooms.

UNLEASHING THE FASCINATION OF GEMSTONES BEYOND JEWELLERY We are all captivated by the brilliance of a beautifully faceted gemstone. Once the exclusive property of the rich and powerful, this brilliance is today being reassigned beyond the role of personal jewellery into a whole range of nonjewellery applications destined to bring sparkle into our lives. Who among us has not spotted an attractive colored stone on a beach or bushwalk and slipped it into a pocket to take home? Long before the art of gem cutting unlocked the sparkle of a gemstone, early humans collected bright little pebbles, tumbled and smoothed in fast-moving water, as prized personal trinkets. These tiny mineral fragments frequently served as rudimentary personal adornment, the beginnings of jewellery as we know it today. Colored Tinno Mobile minerals in the form of precious gems, were also assigned superstitions and powers that made them valuable symbols for the ruling classes and religions of all kinds. Gold was thought to be the flesh of the gods because it didn’t tarnish. Ancient cultures used it for religious statues, objects in temples, and funeral art. It is said that Cleopatra’s trademark eye shadow was ground Lapis Lazuli, and this same mineral was also used on the death mask

22

of Tutankhamun. In ancient China, jade was used to shape weapons, New Zealand’s Maoris used their jade to fashion war clubs.

Gemstone sparkle beyond jewellery Humans first unlocked the art of faceting gemstones in the 17th century, creating even more reason for these brilliant new stones to remain firmly in the hands of those with wealth and influence. And while jewellery became increasingly popular, gemstones were also used to add to the talismanic value of artifacts and accessories. A Christie’s Aayra by auction in New York in June Pure Platinum 2019 saw exquisite nonjewellery, but nevertheless, jeweled items from the royal courts of India attract record prices. An enameled model of a parrot, generously set with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds sold for USD 1m, twice the expected price. An enameled rosewater sprinkler, set with precious gems, sold for USD 200,000. Jeweled dishes, bowls, trinket boxes, ceremonial sword hilts, and many other items changed hands at the auction for extraordinary prices. Objects like the Baroda Pearl Canopy, embroidered with 950,000 pearls, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and glass beads, and designed to be suspended over a four-poster bed, are naturally beyond the realms of the ordinary citizen. At the same time, many other non-jewellery applications for gemstones, inspired by a passion for all that sparkles, can now be enjoyed by us all.

FEATURE

Brilliant new non-jewellery applications Today, designers have access to high-quality, precision-cut created stones, like the diamond-like Swarovski Zirconia, which, thanks to modern application techniques can be permanently applied to fashion accessories like shoes and handbags, personal electronics, home décor items, soft furnishing fabrics, lighting and dozens of other uses beyond traditional jewellery. In India, designers are already seizing the opportunity to apply Swarovski Zirconia to belts and belt buckles, spectacle frames and sunglasses, writing instruments, cufflinks, and showpieces. Meanwhile, Swarovski’s technicians, have perfected the art of applying Swarovski Zirconia to almost any surface and material, opening up endless opportunities for innovative, non-jewellery applications.

Democracy of brilliance The fascination of expertly faceted stones has now been democratized. No longer solely in the hands of kings, emperors, and heads of religion, destined to embellish the hilts of swords of warriors and warlords, or held under lock and key in the world’s greatest museums, Nemanja Llic sparkling stones can now be enjoyed, every day and in every way by a wider public. What remains constant is the fascination of a stone expertly cut in such a way as to release its inner energy while refracting light in a thousand different ways. Meanwhile, the sparkle now seen on personal electronic devices, the brilliance on the handbag, belt, shoes, or sandals, the glisten and glimmer on exquisite home accessories, or on that elegant

writing instrument, will very likely come from Swarovski Zirconia, widely r e c o g n i ze d and the world’s finest.

Very personal adornment And while we currently enjoy sparkle on a whole range of accessories and personal items, the next big thing, as highlighted by Swarovski’s trend research, will bring that same sparkle directly back to the human body. The forecasted surge in body jewellery will be a trend that comes naturally to India, a culture where piercing for jewellery for the ear and nose has a long and distinguished tradition dating back to the 16th century.

Spring/Summer 2019 Trends URBAN NATURE: With many of us now living in urban environments, jewellery that suggests a harmonious connection to the natural world speaks to our hope for a positive future. Botanical forms such as owers, leaves and tendrils combine with sculptural outlines, dramatic planes, and abstract symmetries to create a striking new design language. Silhouettes that are part organic, part architectural are conjured from precious metals such as white and black gold. Spectacular settings hold beautifully cut diamonds in designs that entwine fingers, cascade from ears and lovingly embrace wrists and necks.

OPEN MIND: Open Mind is an ode to those free-spirited individuals who have unbounded curiosity about the world around them. Jewellery inspired by Open Mind has an informal, joyful quality. As new design boundaries are explored and pushed, playful, experimental forms emerge. When baguette diamonds take centre stage, scintillating silhouettes are the thrilling result. A rainbow palette of enamel colours adds to the sense of enchanted wonder in designs that trigger a jubilant emotional response.

“From finding personal fulfilment, and creating meaningful design, to protecting our precious planet, and the value of empowerment and acceptance, the Forevermark 2020 Trend Book speaks to important truths about the choices we make as we live our lives, and the legacy we wish to leave. The trend Urban Nature is a whole philosophy of life whose ethos is the protection of our beloved planet. In designs where urban drama and nature’s bounty come together, we are reminded of the beauty that grows when perfect harmony is achieved. As for Open Mind works on many levels is what makes it such an important and relevant concept right now. It is a reminder to protect our liberties, whilst at the same time seizing life’s opportunities and celebrating them with a happy-go-lucky vibe.” says Federica Imperiali, Head of New Product Development at Forevermark.

THE INTERVIEW

For a dancer, actor, choreographer Sreedevi Unni, jewellery is an essential thread in the fabric of her life. Hailing from a traditional Nair family in Calicut, Kerala, the dancer was well-versed with different types of jewellery, precious stones and what was trending and what wasn’t growing up. Sreedevi Unni takes us down the memory lanes of her childhood and tells us what made her fall in love with jewellery and what keeps her excited about owning a piece.

Golden memories of childhood

“Jewellery was an essential part of our lives right from birth. Paalakkamothiram for girls and maanni for boys were custom-made (to be worn on the 28th day after their birth) from goldsmiths and worn until the kids were one year old. Jewellery strung in high-quality silk or woollen threads was a mark of an elite family back then. Also, my mother, a scholar, an educationist and a creative genius insisted that different types of jewellery be made for all girls in the family and worn during festivals like Onam, Vishu and during Thiruvathira celebrations.”

“I used to keenly observe my mother as a child and notice how she wore jewellery. Lakshmi maala and Muthumani maala were her regulars. Since she was a public figure, her thought was to keep it minimal and elegant every day.”

It was also a tradition in the Aristocratic family those days to invite artisans home and order custom-made jewellery where the designs and the intricacies were designed by the womenfolk according to their taste. In Sreedevi’s case, her mother’s taste in jewellery being superlative, the discussions and requirements were shared quite in detail with the visiting artisans. The womenfolk also used to wait for sellers from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for pearls, other precious stones and diamonds. Sreedevi says the trick to identify a good diamond was its shine. If it has a black spot, the diamond was considered to be inauspicious.

Sreedevi’s love for jewellery

Among her sisters, Sreedevi was the most excited about festivals and dressing up. “With matching attire and gold jewellery, I used to dress my best during festivities. My father used to jokingly say that one can look at me and guess whether it’s a festival or not. My other sisters weren’t that into jewellery or dressing up. It could also be because I was a dancer.” She adds, “But I also remember and followed my mother’s words on dressing up, which were to ‘keep it elegant and simple’.” Sreedevi says that Gold is a powerful metal; its energy and power are truly magical. She loves wearing her gold jimikki, given by her mother for her wedding even today but in a new avatar imagined by her.

GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS 2020 The Best Jewellery of the Night It was all about necklaces—masterfully crafted diamondset ropes often punctuated with vividly colored gems— at the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles. After years of big earrings ruling Hollywood red carpets, it was lovely to see them (and such fantastic ones, at that) slip into the spotlight.

Because nearly everyone wore a statement necklace, earrings shrunk in size. And the multi-pierced earring look rendered in high jewellery, which was pulled off by many, felt fresh—and just as luxe as the classic diamond drops so many others opted for. Charlize Theron and Cynthia Erivo, both of whom wore short diamondand-colored-gemstone necklaces (see them below), carried off the severalsmall-earrings look especially well.
