I had the vision to create sophisticated, pioneering, reliable, and an
inspiring jewellery magazine that will change the people’s perception towards the jewellery. It is not a small feat but made possible with a collective of likeminded, passionate game changers, thought leaders, and style makers. In today ’s world full of ersatz and replication, we wanted to do something different and extraordinary. Something reliable yet that will stand out and bring change, which could take beyond the pages of a magazine.
"This magazine is for the people who are ready to challenge the status quo, think out of the box, and ready to experiment."
Based on the feedback received, our readers loved the content in the debut issue. My special thanks to our brand partners and guest writers for steaming article submissions, splendid collections, informative reviews and very innovative tipsters, and of course your priceless participation. Through the sections of the second edition which is set on the festive theme, you will find stories on heritage jewellery, trends for the festive season, the jewellery brands that rule the industry for centuries (series II), celebrities flaunting their festive jewellery and much more. I am proud to say that the debut issue reached over 40,000 people via various social media platforms and our presence is on all the leading digital news and magazine signals us that we are moving in the right direction. I welcome your feedback and inputs, so don’t let awesomeness to stop here! Flare-up your screen and explore the amazing world of jewellery like never before with the presence of The J Mag on leading digital newsstands.

Heritage Jewellery The Emblematic of fine craftsmanship Divinely and intelligently handcrafted jewellery pieces can naturally transcend the past, the present and the future to make the wearer’s appeal timeless. Every piece is handcrafted with passion by the artisan and with a momentous investment of time. The time and the admiration of the artisan towards the craft infuse the jewellery with constructive affirmations and a significance which no machine made jewellery can match. Heritage jewellery is an artistic expression whether it is neckpiece or a choker or even a pair of handmade earrings.
If you are the one who loves to treasure an heritage piece which is as individualistic as you, then it is something that you must definitely invest in. Here are some pieces that will introduce you to the world of heritage jewellery. Focused on reviving the old techniques of fine jewellery making, using the finest stones and set in 22K gold, this collection is a call to the design ethos that has been spoken of in ancient texts like ‘Ratna Pariksha’ and the ‘Ratna Rahasya’.
With increasing demand for jewellery that evokes the elegance of heritage or family heirlooms, these pieces are best to put together a collection of jewellery that can be passed down generations. With the highest quality of gems, in the form of uncut emeralds, rubies and diamonds set by hand in 22 karat gold, the Heritage Collection can rub shoulders with any family heirloom and still look like a breath of fresh air. Akin to treasure, these pieces have been painstakingly handcrafted for the new age buyer focusing on craftsmanship and bringing back designs thought to be lost. Thanks to a recent crop of period movies, interest has reawakened in coveting older styles.

Firstly, you need to be clear on one thing, just by wearing too many pieces for an occasion doesn’t call for a class. Just a big jhummka or a chandelier earring with the naked neck is enough to grab oodles of attention and sometimes simple diamond jewellery will add up the grace. Begin with picking up a showpiece and then flaunt it in a right way to highlight what you are wearing.

Diwali, the festival of lights is celebrated across India with great enthusiasm. It is the time when everybody in the family comes together to celebrate the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. During Diwali, people across India also purchase gold in reverence to Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity.
THE
‘GOLDEN’
HUES OF FESTIVITIES
It is believed that the purchase of gold and gold ornaments during Diwali pleases Goddess Lakshmi to bless her devotees with prosperity and happiness. This is the reason why people all across the country flock to jewellery stores to purchase gold, silver and diamond jewellery. Diwali is also a time when people share their happiness by gifting family and friends with sweets, valuables and bursting crackers. Since our inception close to a century ago, Bhima Jewellers has witnessed the growth of jewellery purchase during Diwali. There was a time when hardly anyone invested in gold ornaments during festivals in India. As time went by, the purchasing power of the people improved and there was a huge increase in the amount of gold and other precious metals being purchased during auspicious days. Today, Bhima’s stores across the country and abroad witness huge footfalls during festivals like Onam, Akshaya Tritiya and Diwali. During each of these festivals, while customers are keen to purchase gold of the highest purity from Bhima, one witnesses a distinct preference for certain styles during each of these festivals. During Onam, one sees a lot of demand for Temple Jewellery Designs, Antiques, Ethnic Designs and heavy Jhumki pieces that compliment the traditional ‘Kasavu Saree’. Diwali being a more colourful festival where men and women wear brightly coloured attire, a wider range of jewellery designs are in demand. As Diwali brings
with it many more occasions to dress at ones best, the demand for designer jewellery is much higher. From Lakshmi Pooja to family gatherings and bursting crackers there are a lot of occasions where you can wear your favourite jewels that compliment your attire. During Diwali, a few of Bhima’s designs that were very popular are Kundan Jewellery, Temple Jewellery and Polki Jewellery. Kundan Jewellery is an antique design that is inspired from the ancient past. These elegant and amazing designs compliment the festive look. Traditional sarees go very well with a pair of Kundan earrings too. Temple Jewellery is inspired by Gods and Goddesses and was in great demand this festive season. The intricate designs of Temple Jewellery have the ability to enhance the look of even the simplest of traditional garments. Bhima stores have also seen a surge in demand for Polki Jewellery that blends both gold and diamonds. There is a wide variety of Polki Jewellery studded with colourful stones also. Apart from these designs, there has been good demand for heavy cocktail rings and hand jewellery like bangles and bracelets to complete the Diwali look.

ERA O
Transform Treating yourself to high jewellery means that it requires to make a certain amount of investment. In an era where almost everything changes by the second than why not our jewellery. In my recent visit to the Jewellery Arabia, Bahrain, I witnessed many jewellery designers and high jewellery houses crafting pieces ( one piece of jewellery ) that could be worn in multiple ways. Here are some of my picks from Jewellery Arabia Bahrain. While scouting for jewellery with unique mechanism, I came across jewellery designed by the London based, James Ganh. He is known for curating jewellery that is transformable in two or more ways. One of the pieces that caught my attention is this colourful gemstudded cuff which can be worn by itself and could be detached to be worn as,
Designer: Karen Suen
1
A ring – with bold Paraiba Tourmaline Cabochon surrounded with diamonds.
2
Butterfly brooch with blue and Yellow Sapphire and diamonds
3
Openable cuff with Tsavorite Garnets, Yellow sapphire and diamonds.
Karen Suen is renowned for jewellery with unusual gemstones and diamonds.
OF
mations Designer: James Ganh Available in different colours
The piece that caught my attention is this leaf inspired Green Turquoise carving from Turkey along with fancy yellow diamonds. This ring can be worn in one finger and can be turned around to spread across all the fingers.
1 2
There are certain benefits when opting for transformable jewellery,
It gives you the option to wear one piece of jewellery in two or multiple ways. That means you can wear the same piece of jewellery in different ways for various occasions.
The jewellery can be worn individually when detached or could be worn by itself.
3 4 If the jewellery is embellished with gemstones, it gives the wearer an option to match it or contrast it to their ensemble.
With the current economy, In my opinion transformable or detachable jewellery makes the jewellery cost effective and can entice the wearer to indulge in a purchase that’s offers multiple jewellery options at a time.
Detachable gemstones have an added advantage of wearing the trending colors of that season.

A DIAMOND’S CUT
IS ESSENTIAL TO IT’S BEAUTY With the beginning of the winter wedding season in India and worldwide, there is much to ponder upon especially when it comes to purchasing the bridal jewellery or mainly the special diamond ring. Keeping updated with the latest trend is definitely the most important aspect for all brides to be. However, knowing where the money is being spent is another aspect that everyone should consider. The cut of a diamond determines the brilliance, the fire and ultimately the life of the stone. The cut is as essential for the appearance of the diamond as the other C’s. A top quality diamond (loupe clean - exceptionally white +) with bad proportions will be less attractive than another diamond with lower clarity and colour but with a perfect cut.
Shape & Cut In a jewellery certificate, the shape and the cut of the stone are mentioned. For example; round brilliant or emerald cut diamonds. A common misinterpretation is that the term diamond cut also refers to the shape of the diamond. The cut is what determines how well-cut your diamond is, whereas shape is the form into which it was cut. The shape of the stone is determined by the outline of the stone such as round, pear, oval, etc. The cutting style is the arrangement of facets (polished faces) on the stone. The most popular cutting style is brilliant which constitute triangular and kite shaped facets. Round brilliant cut is a fine example of such a cutting style. When a diamond has parallel facets arranged to resemble steps, it is termed as a step cut cutting style. The elegant and classic Emerald cut is a fine example of this cutting style. However, if any of above two cutting styles are modified they are termed as modified cuts such as princess cut.
The best things in life are free. The second best are very expensive ~ Coco Chanel
If a stone has a mix of faceting styles, it is termed as a mixed cut such as a radiant cut.
•
Symmetry refers to the exactness between facet shape & size, roundness of the diamond, etc.
A diamond’s cut grades include proportion, polish and symmetry:
•
Polish describes the absence of external characteristics on the facets, for example; polish lines or scratches
•
Proportions define the overall brilliance and sparkle of a diamond based on the various measurements of the cut such as table size, crown angle, pavilion depth, girdle thickness, etc.
In order for light to interact within a diamond the way it should, a diamond should be well-cut.
Cut grades of Ideal, Excellent, Very Good, Good and Fair are thereafter assigned to diamonds based on the proportion, polish and symmetry.
A perfect cut corresponds to more brilliance, sparkle and fire.
Other than the proportions, polish and symmetry collectively known as the Cut Grade, the visual appeal of a diamonds are also of utmost importance. For example, not all excellent cut grade diamonds may appeal to everyone.
Do remember this small tip: All other shapes other than round brilliant are known as fancy shapes or fancy cut diamonds. The cut grade for these shapes is mainly based on the polish and symmetry of the stone.
Round brilliant being the most popular shape and cutting style are priced differently compared to fancy shaped diamonds. For example, you should avoid comparing the value of a 1-carat round brilliant cut to a 1-carat pear brilliant cut diamond.
Cut & Value
Hence, buy what appeals to you, by rocking and tilting your diamond jewellery slightly under different lights to fall in love with your perfectly cut diamonds.
Value of a diamond is determined by the combination of the 4 value factors i.e. the 4C’s. Cut till the early 2000’s did not play a major role in price determination of a diamond, however, in today’s scenario, cut influences the value of a diamond to a large extent.

I am here to answer your questions related to the fascinating world of gems and jewellery. I may not be able to answer all the questions but I will try to give you the best suggestions. You may send your questions to the J Mag anonymously or with your initials.
Hi...my earrings have changed colour and are looking less white compared to when I got them, have I been cheated? - KP Dear KP, Firstly, you have not been cheated so not to worry. Secondly, the rhodium plating on your earrings may have faded hence the change in colour. I suggest you visit the jewellery store you purchased the earrings from and ask them to do the rhodium re-plating. Since it’s a plating it will wear of in time hence you can restore the look of your earrings by getting the plating done again.
Dear Madame, I love collecting crystals as a hobby but am not sure if they are real or not, how can I be sure about them being real? - NS Dear NS, You have a popular hobby like many others. Usually, crystals which are sold in the market are genuine so nothing much to worry about. However, when it comes to rough crystals which are sold at a higher price, you should get them checked for being genuine. If you still have doubts, I suggest you send in some photographs of the crystals you have for me to suggest a better option.
I recently purchased a silver jewellery set which has started turning black, what should I do? - AP Dear AP, Silver usually reacts to sulphur present in the air and if you stay near the coastline or in places where humidity is high, silver will react to it. But not to worry. You can always ask your jeweller to have rhodium plating done on the set.
Can I use white sapphire on a daily basis? - KR Dear KR, You can use white sapphire daily as it has strong durability. However, your question is a little unclear whether it is directed towards astrology or for fashion. If it is for astrology, your astrologer would know best and if it is for fashion then there is no issue.
What are GF Bangkok rubies? - SB Dear SB, GF is the short form for Glass Filled. It’s a treatment done on stones to make them look clear by filling the fractures with molten glass material. Such stones are usually priced lower than untreated stones. A qualified gemmologist can easily identify the treatment. Bangkok is the term usually paired with glass filled due to the popularity of region, however, it’s not necessarily true that all treated stones come from Bangkok.
