Celebrating womanhood! Nevertheless, we tend to think that women in today’s society have attained a status in the various field of legal, educational, socio-economic, or religious matters, we still often tend to employ different yardsticks. Habitually, chauvinists have constantly looked upon women as inferior. This scenario doesn’t change even today completely. Yes, but with the changing times, the role of women has acquired new dimensions. In an exclusive interaction with the beautiful and successful ladies and to honour their phenomenal contribution to the world we bring to you their inspiring and empowering journey of highs and troughs. As the years’ march head, we witness substantial changes. From astronauts and prime ministers, women have been playing a vital role in society. Today we have welcomed, or I would rather say have proved that women can work and have a family at the same time. She excels the art of balancing. Though our place in the society has seen transformations, still it is a long way to go. “Be the woman you want to be, don’t let others define you” Happy Women’s Day!

and their Jewellery

From time immemorial, women and jewellery have been inseparable. Whether it had a functional existence like holding hair or clothing in place or as an indicator of social status like a wedding ring or mangalsutra or portraying a specific ethnicity and religion or as a talisman, there are many forms of jewellery. While the metals gold, silver and even bronze have been the more prominent metals used while making jewellery, one can see the recent trend in platinum jewellery doing the rounds. The ever-lasting love and demand for Jewellery, be it contemporary or traditional is evident in the plethora of offline and online shops bustling for attention.

Earrings feature as the most common and essential pieces of jewellery in every Indian woman’s armoire. Ear piercings are one of the oldest forms of body modification mainly because the ear lobe is easy to pierce through, and the healing is speedy. Karnavedha or Ear piercing is an age-old tradition in India and is one of the sixteen major sanskaras known as “Shodasha Sanskaras” of Sanatana Dharma, widely practiced among Hindus. It is usually done within 1-5 years of the child being born. Although

8

this is a prevalent Hindu ritual, one will find women from all religions wearing earrings, sometimes not just one pair but multiple ones on their ear lobes and/or helix. There are so many types of earrings available for women namely Studs, Hoops, Statement, Chandelier, Strand, Ear Jackets and so on. Along with earrings, some of the favorite jewellery items for Indian women are bangles, finger and toe rings, necklaces, anklets, nose pins

and maang tikas. Nose piercings are now a significant part of fashion and is considered the second most popular type of body piercing, after ear piercing. These pieces of jewellery are not just mere accessories but are intrinsically tied to our belief systems. There is a belief among Indian women that piercing the left side of the nose helps strengthen the female reproductive organs, and is supposed to make childbirth easier.

jewellery is the lesser known toe ring which is quite prevalent in India. It is worn as a symbol of marriage not just by Hindus but by Muslims as well. According to an eminent scientific theory, wearing toe rings help in regularizing the menstrual cycles. Its famous cousin the finger ring, not only signifies ornamentation, but is also symbolic of the marital status of a woman.

Bangles form yet another important ornament for the Indian woman. Scientifically, it is known to increase a woman’s blood circulation level and channelize the energy passing through the skin. They constitute a major part of the traditional “Sola-Shringar” of the Indian bride. Different states have different bridal bangles. Some of the most significant ones are the Shakha and Pola of the Bengali bride, the Ivory bangles or “Chooda” from Rajastan and Gujarat, the Ivory and Red bangle combo of the Punjabi bride and the odd numbered green glass bangles of the Maharashtrian bride.

To the Indian woman, jewellery is not just about tradition and aesthetics but it’s also a source of financial security. It is a measure of her economic and social status. With the rise in the number of working women in India, many buy jewellery for themselves symbolizing the newly attained financial independence and self-esteem. It is a new personal style statement for modern India with our women rooting for the light weight modern and contemporary designs and still striking a balance with the traditional voluminous pieces of jewellery that defines our ancient culture and tradition.

Anklets are an important adornment integral to our culture. While talking about anklets, who can forget Kannagi, the central character for the Tamil Epic, Silapathikaram eulogized as the epitome of chastity and worshipped as a Goddess. The story narrates how Kannagi took revenge on the King of Madurai and burnt down the entire city of Madurai for wrongfully killing her husband. Her ruby filled anklets form an integral part of this legendary story. Another piece of foot

Necklaces accentuate the feminine factor and are most favored by women of all ages. It Is an ancient belief that they act as protection against hypnotism and bring good luck and ward off the evil eye. The “Mangalsutra” worn by married women differs from state to state and symbolizes the love and commitment between the married couple. It is believed to control blood pressure and make blood circulation regular in the women’s body.

KEEPING DIAMON YOURSEL HAPPY W In this special women’s day article, we at HRD Antwerp salute all the women who are the real diamonds. Diamonds are known to be the hardest mineral on earth yet they can break. A diamond also can lose its shine when care is not taken. Let’s understand how to make your diamonds shine as always and also how to choose jewellery wisely.

A woman is a diamond who can handle tough situations and yet shine. 10

www.princejewellery.com

G YOUR ND & LF HAPPY – WOMEN’S DAY Hardness Diamonds are the hardest minerals found on earth. The hardness of a mineral is described as the resistance to scratch by another mineral. For example; sapphires cannot scratch diamonds however diamonds can scratch sapphires.

Toughness Diamonds are tough but not as tough as Jadeite or Nephrite. Toughness is described as the resistance to breakage or chipping. Diamonds can break along the cleavage directions also known as the planes of weakness. A good example of hardness and toughness is a ceramic plate which can break but does not get scratched easily.

Keeping the shine of a diamond Oil, grease, beauty creams or any form of grease can create a layer of oil on your diamond. The shine of a diamond can reduce visibly even if the cut is excellent due to the above reason. In

order to keep your diamonds shining as new, clean your diamond jewellery regularly with lukewarm water, mild shampoo and a soft toothbrush. In case your jewellery needs additional cleaning, hand it over to your jeweller who will clean it professionally. It is advised to have your diamond jewellery cleaned and checked every six to twelve months. If your jewellery has a combination of diamonds and other gemstones such as pearls or emeralds, avoid cleaning it in a rough manner or in an ultrasonic cleaning machine yourself.

Choosing your diamond jewellery Women, as we know, have different body shapes; pear-shaped, hourglass etc. When choosing a piece of jewellery, consider the body shape and the type of jewellery you are going to purchase. If you plan to purchase a necklace, consider the shape of your face and neck. If you have a long neck, a choker is an ideal choice, if you have a short neck a long necklace is an ideal choice. Similarly, for rings, if you want your fingers to look long and slender, you can opt for a marquise shape diamond. If you are choosing diamonds randomly and want to have a sparkling diamond, a cushion or radiant cut are good choices. Similarly, if you want something that speaks out royalty and elegance, you can opt for the traditional round brilliant or royalty redefined emerald shaped diamond. To make the right choice, always try wearing the jewellery before deciding to purchase. In today’s high-tech world, the customer can also try a piece of jewellery virtually where a picture of yours is used in the jewellery store’s software and you can place different types of jewellery to make your choice.

Tip of the day

Apply your make-up, cream, perfume before wearing your precious jewellery

WOMANHOOD

International Women’s Day is here, a day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The world is reminded to focus on gender equality through celebrating this day worldwide. The J Mag caught up with some women leaders to get to know what they feel about womanhood and why they feel it is important to celebrate womanhood every day. They not only talk about themselves but also share whom they idolise and why. Not just that, they share their journey of highs and troughs, what it means to be a woman and how they do what they do. They come from varied backgrounds and have carved a niche for themselves in spite of countless duties and responsibilities in their personal lives. It was indeed enlightening to talk to them and bring you these positive thoughts.

WOMANHOOD

When the world prophecies success on one path, taking a detour to follow one’s heart is a challenge. Ashwini Oza understood that creativity, design and art were her calling while working as an interior designer and worked with the industry for a decade before venturing into the Jewellery designing. Her belief and conviction guided her to create the life she wanted and now is known as one of the most loved creative designers in the Jewellery industry. Her designs are an amalgamation of tradition and modernity. She dons multiple hats at her design studio and manages both creative as well as business aspects of her design studio. Ashwini Oza is the Co-Founder and Chief Designer at ARNAV & Co, which was established 18 years ago. Arnav stands for her love for design and Jewellery and embodies the individuality of every human being. Unparalleled in their designs and creative styling, jewellery from Arnav are some of the most celebrated pieces.

It is difficult to specify one quality to like about being a woman and Ashwini echoes this thought. “Is it our ability to do multiple things all at once, & all done to perfection? Or that we put a little soul into everything we touch? Our knack for business, perhaps, or a ken for spotting a loophole? The unfailing instinct that tells us if someone is trustworthy or not? Protecting our children like lionesses? The power to stay practical & non-judgmental during the toughest of times, & getting the job done no matter what? Our hearts are open to the love & beauty around us? I don’t have one answer to the ‘why? All I know is that being a woman is what defines me, & I’m proudest of that.”

Every woman has an inspiration and for Ashwini, it is her mother, “My mother has been one of my biggest inspirations. She has faced life’s adversities with a rare dignity & courage. She is my guiding light & exemplifies womanhood to me. Womanhood to me is to celebrate the best of who you are, flaws & all! It denotes a grace & balance that blend beautifully with every aspect of our lives.”

She is proud to be a human being who is accepting and understanding of the world as it is. She believes, “According to me, womanhood is about supporting and uplifting each other rather than being malicious and jealous. Everyone is fighting a battle you don’t know about so just be nice and kind to everyone. Even if someone hurts you don’t retaliate.” She is here to make a difference in the world and is a compassionate and caring human being. Her education has always been very important to her. My career has allowed her the opportunity to travel the world, an opportunity that she is extremely grateful for. However, it has been a lot of hard work, being a model and an actress is a 365-day a year job as your schedule can be very unpredictable. She is surrounded by a great set of friends along the way also in the industry heaven. Elena is very proud of being a human being and feels that every person should be an example and be the best possible version of who they are whether it being man, woman or part of the LGBT community. “I find life experiences inspirational and they can come from anywhere from the person I see doing a kind act on the street to reading articles on people who have faced challenges and overcome them. All people can be inspiring and their journey can encourage others. If you have a dream, never give up. Be your number one supporter and fan. Life is hard but doesn’t give up.” “Womanhood is about supporting and uplifting each other rather than being malicious and jealous. Everyone is fighting a battle unknown to you, just be nice and kind to everyone. Even if someone hurts, don’t retaliate. Their actions are a reflection of them, not you.”

Jija is presently the President of the Institute of Directors, Bangalore Chapter and the Honorary President of The Art Mantram Foundation, a not-for-profit trust that promotes Indian art. “ Joining the IPS was not an option for women and I had to fight many battles to enter, survive and contributed in establishing an easier path for the nearly thousand women who joined the Indian Police Service since then.” “I would like to underscore that the way I could conduct myself encouraged not only the women but helped change the ecosystem and more importantly, and what was more difficult was in bringing about the transformation in the mindsets of the seniors, subordinates, politicians and the public at large. They were reassured that a woman can function equally effectively, and perhaps more efficiently than the men officers. “ Womanhood is the magic of combining the best of the two worlds.

It is in the DNA of every woman – the power and ability to fulfil these commitments and make a difference in all the roles that she plays. I have been fortunate enough to accomplish this in my personal as well as professional life. I have met women across the globe with great accomplishments in their professional lives, and that inspires me every minute. My mother, Mukta, played that role in my life. She would expect discipline but offer words of encouragement to help me discover myself. She supported my professional growth in every way possible. She reminded me of societal norms but

raised me to have the capability, courage and the conviction to break the mould. Women are capable and confident creations. A woman is an inherent multi-tasker, managing tasks between household work and professional life. I also believe homemaker dons numerous hats and that itself is a big challenge. Women need good communication skills to manage the expectations of family and more so the relationships at the workplace throughout their lives. They are inherently gifted with being empathetic and bringing order to chaos. Women are meticulous planners as well as executors and have the future in sight. When a woman brings these qualities to an organisation, she creates a culture of encouragement, improvement and interdependency by building on the strengths of each individual. Womanhood is what we women come to define it as. And, we should celebrate this womanhood every day!

What enables Pallavi to create masterpieces every time is that, when it comes to design, she is fearless! She explores the creative side of her through more avant-garde work done in her two boutiques and a design studio. She says, “I am proud to be a woman because I am able to connect with my instincts as women, not just at home but also my workplace. I advocate education and more education for women so that they can earn as much or more than men, and be able to follow their passion and explore the unexplored world through the eyes of a woman. ”

In my perspective, I feel there is no difference between men and women; we are humans, here on Earth to give to the world what we owe it. I feel that we should celebrate our strengths and work as a human community to overcome our weaknesses and make this world a better place before we exit it. Pallavi is proud of being a woman, “ Because I am able to connect with my instincts as women, not just at home but also my workplace. I was born in a family where respect for women was high, and as I ventured into this world, I was shocked to see the way gender inequality was apparent A woman must find her calling. Pallavi as a female entrepreneur feels, “It is important to compete with our own strengths rather than

competing with male strengths. As women, we should love and celebrate ourselves, just the way we are, and get out of stereotypical ways of role division that existed before. Pallavi finds inspiration in every woman or man, who is living life in harmony with the planet, doing what you love and following your passion, giving back to the planet multi-fold more than what she takes. Womanhood is a beautiful journey, but let us not for a minute think that because a woman can bear a child, that is all that she is capable of. I advocate education and more education for women so that they can earn as much or more than men, and be able to follow their passion and explore the unexplored world through the eyes of a woman.

Dr R Sreevani Sharma has successfully handled the roles of a life coach, social activist, translator, news reporter, radio announcer, lyric writer and author in her illustrious career. Yet she is unwilling to call it quits. As a cancer survivor, she runs around villages spreading awareness about cancer and counselling the victims. She is the Director of Trendz Institute of English and soft skills, which established in 2003 with a vision to empower rural youngsters to learn and speak English and to sound confident in the language. Her relentless efforts to support the rural community have been continuing for years. As a lyricist and poetess, she is also bestowed with several State and District level Awards, honours, and accolades. For an anthem of Kadapa, in commemoration of bi-centennial celebrations, she received the best lyric award from the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy and Nara Chandrababu Naidu. She has been the author of many books and translation works. Several books including a compilation of Telugu ghazals and songs, satirical verses on the contemporary political, social environment, and many pieces of poetry are penned by her. She says,” Eight years ago when I became a victim of breast cancer and underwent torturous treatment for eight months, my illness could steal my physical energy and time, but not my passion to serve or strong desire to nestle my family. I took inspiration from an eagle’s life. I determined to bounce back to life with much more vigour, more passion and more zeal and started celebrating my life.” For Sreevani, “Womanhood is a unique boon, as strengths are counted as weaknesses; weaknesses are evaluated as strengths. No description or quotation thoroughly fits the term womanhood. Like still waters, a woman’s personality can never be easily estimated. She can both be a silent river or a violent tsunami. A woman is an amazing creation of Heavens, who gives life and nurtures posterity. (Not just woman, of course, all female creatures of the world.) She is the creator and re-creator. She strongly believes that Motherhood is the noblest boon of Womanhood.” A woman has a great part to play in the onward march of the human race. She is an embodiment of love, compassion, mental strength and organising abilities. She was held back for centuries, chained by several strictures in various forms. Women’s liberation has opened up boundless avenues for exploring all her hidden potentialities. She has grabbed the strands of liberalization to cast off age-old shackles of serfdom and male domination. Hence the world could witness woman rulers, managers, pilots, police officers, soldiers, CEO’s, astronauts..... what not and where not....?

Sreevani draws inspiration from her mother, who never allows any circumstance to take away the cool smile from her. She stood very strong in all odds; with firm faith in God and by her self-reliance. “I want to stand an inspiration to women who get depressed even at the slightest ill health, paving red carpet welcome to other major ones to follow. I feel that no illness can be fatal unless our mind is ready to accept. I wish that everyone stays mentally strong and proactive. Never lose hope if you are economically backward, never lose interest if you talent is suppressed, never lose confidence if you aren’t provided with the opportunity, never let a physical pain take your happiness away.” “Womanhood is not a parameter of what a woman is, but what she will be. A disciplined mother may not bring forth a disciplined child but a mother of good mental health could bring a better family, a better society, in turn, a better community and obviously a fruitful ecosystem of human life.”

She caught the attention of many worldwide and was known as the one who challenged and changed destiny, the one who rose as a survivor. She has her own life, and she creates another life which is the most beautiful part of a woman.”

It has been a long journey for her which begin at the age of three. My mother was very interested in classical dance, but she couldn’t dance. She always thought if she ever has a daughter she will make her a dancer. Her father is from Kerala, and besides his regular work, he used to be a typist for the then famous dancer Sudha Doraiswamy. So, he also had a dream that if he has a daughter, he will make her dancer. When I was born, both were so happy that I was given the name Sudha after the famous dancer Sudha Doraiswamy. After my accident, I took a short pause and started dancing again. Her story gained a lot of media attention and caught the attention of Ramoji Rao, the baron of Hyderabad. He wanted to make a film on her life story and after some deliberation asked her to play her own character. They convinced her to play the lead in the film, and that’s how she set foot in the industry. “After my accident, I had only two options: to give up or battle it out. My parents had raised me to be a strong woman such that giving up was not in my dictionary. My mother used to say that it is better to fight and lose rather than not fighting at all. Of course, it was not as simple as it sounds. It took three years to come back to the stage.” “I am blessed to be a woman, and I don’t think anybody can multi-task better than a woman. She can fit in any role, and that is the best aspect of being a woman. A woman is a born fighter. Womanhood is the most beautiful thing. She has her own life and is able to create another life which is the most beautiful part of a woman.” “I don’t keep anybody as my inspiration as my inspiration is my failures and I am very proud of being a woman.”

Just grab a pair of ripped jeans and a tank top with oxidised silver jhumkas and bangles and get ready to pass the fashion test with flying colors. Nandini is a hub for these kinds of customised pieces that are light on the pocket and yet classy and sleek. Her inventory of silver rings, chunky bracelets worn with spaghetti dress and block heels or jeggings/flaired pants is all that it takes to steal the show.

Putting an end to that dilemma of what jewellery to pick for special occasions, choose to jazz up your kurtas and salwar kameez with statement oxidized silver jewellery pieces to work wonders. Her outstanding, intricate patterns and styles are taking the market by storm. A collared shirt and a bold piece of chunky neckpiece can get you one notch higher. This look is apt for setting right the perfect Indo-Western style. Add a beautiful pair of jhumkas from Nandini’s collection to your party dress and become an envy of everyone! Though her forte is oxidized silver jewellery, her collection also includes: Earrings, Rings, Neck Pieces, Wedding jewellery, Floral jewellery, Kundan jewellery, Tribal jewellery and much more There is a bit of Nandini in every one! It’s just a matter of time, diligence and self-esteem! Nandini Indrakiran, Svanik Creations 9886565456, svanikcreations@gmail.com

Woman: The Enchanting Soul It’s the age of women empowerment. Women are foraying into almost all areas traditionally dominated by men. Most of the couples in today’s world are working couples and the gender bias is fading slowly with both men and women sharing work equally at home. The theme for International Women’s Day 2019 is #Balanceforbetter emphasizing on the importance of Gender balance in all sectors. Women play multiple roles; be it a mother, wife, sister, daughter, professional etc. A mother especially juggles between a lot of roles of looking after home and her kids and family. This Women’s Day, appreciate and acknowledge the women in your life, whether it’s your mom, wife, sister, daughter, friend, colleague etc. Spend time with them, talk, connect and celebrate with them. It is a day when women are recognised for their accomplishments without regard to separations, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. A little gesture of gratitude in the form of love adds value to the relationship. Gift them with Bhima jewellery, the purest gold, as a token of your love. Celebrate womanhood with Bhima.

Being ORIGINAL ... “Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the world” - Hillary Clinton

I firmly believe in this quote and it was an honour to hear and experience about the journey of the 15 designers who have been a part of the WJA Designer Of India Book and are also members of the Womens Jewelry Association India Chapter.

The moment I was approached by these members mentioning about the book, I was excited and immediately agreed to feature them, that was my way of supporting them. What really touched my heart was how these women have had various struggles but have stood for themselves and found their niche in the gems and jewellery industry. Jotting down some of the words of encouragement shared by these ladies which makes you think that a woman can think big and fulfil her dreams no matter how big or small the hurdles are.

Is coral made of plant or animal? HA

photo created by kues

Dear HA, Coral is an organic material made up of polyps which are invertebrate in nature. Basically, there are not plants but tiny animals. When thousands of polyps come together, they become coral.

Madame Bijou is here to answer your questions related to the fascinating world of gems and jewellery. I may not be able to answer all the questions but I will try to give you the best suggestions. You may send your questions to the J Mag anonymously or with your initials.

What are alloys? JA Dear JA, Alloys are different metals used along with the precious metals i.e. gold, silver and platinum. Alloys are used to give more durability and strength to the main base metal other than also changing the colour at times. Since gold and silver are soft metals, the use of alloys allows these metals to be transformed into delicate as well as durable jewellery. Common gold alloys include copper, silver, palladium. Platinum on the other hand is a very durable and tough metal and the alloys used with platinum include those from the platinum group such as ruthenium, palladium.

I recently bought a gold ring of 12 karat from Europe, is it really gold? SJ Dear SJ, Gold is divided into 24 parts. When a jewellery piece has been hallmarked as 12k it means 12 parts out of 24 parts is gold, while the rest are alloys. Alloys commonly used in gold jewellery include copper, silver, palladium.

I heard from my friend that if I rub a natural pearl against my teeth, it will feel smooth, is it true? AH Dear AH, No. A plastic bead will feel smooth when rubbed against the teeth, while a natural or cultured pearl will feel gritty. I would advise not doing this in front of others.
