India is one of the major markets for the jewellery in the world

and is going to touch US$ 100 billion in next 5 years. Jewellery in India is sold mostly on the quantity of the material than the design and workmanship. We have bloggers, influencers, designers and experts doing great work in providing content on the jewellery for the consumers, but there are no comprehensive platforms which connects all of them. With The J Mag, we aim to fill this void by creating a platform that brings together various sources of jewellery information, curated from the best in the industry. We are modelling The J Mag as a conglomeration of digital media channels, a website, a blog, social media channels and an e-magazine all working together to provide the best of information about jewellery curated from the most prominent and popular sources of information. The readers can use the platform to explore further about jewellery using the unique website links we provided to various brands, designers and bloggers. Every jewellery pi Ashwini Oza, a renowned jewellery designer and Partner of ‘Studio by Ashwini Oza’ understands the value and the sentiments attached to a jewellery piece and recommends every one to restore the traditional pieces She gives the old jewellery pieces a fresh look with her creativity, restores without hurting the sentimental values attached to the piece. She creates the something very new and beautiful out of old pieces keeping the original form. Every piece out from her jewellery studio has a story to say.

In limelight

The tradition of passing on jewellery from one generation to another generation conveys the sanctity of the traditions and the sentiments attached. With the latest jewellery designs and light weight jewellery making trends people either do not have time or patience to value their antique or traditional jewellery which has been passed on from generations. They either sell it for a new piece or it remains in their locker for ages. Heirloom is a piece of jewellery attached with history to some, but it will always have a special meaning for one generation to pass down to the next. The piece is a reminiscence of its origin, family memories and also of the people who might not be with us any longer and this is why they are usually priceless and should be cared for and preserved when they can.

iece tells a story Jewellery should be made from heart is what she believes in and rooted deeply with Indian traditions and rich cultural heritage, she permeates the contemporary and sophisticated design aspects to the piece. “Every piece that come is challenge as it is true piece of craftmanship which cannot

be shaken. I must ensure and protect the purity of the work, value the skill and imagination of the creator. The effort and the hardships that go into restoring the piece pave for the appreciations from the y clients and that satisfaction and contentment cannot be express in words, says Ashwini.

Basically, an interior designer who has worked under big banners and creative minds in the industry, Ashwini decided to stream her creativity into jewellery designing turning the mundane into more vivacious and beautiful. Her baby steps into jewellery designing started from the grassroot level. She would sit with the karigars and learn every aspect in detail. As creativity and passion was always in her, the jewellery making imbibed into her. As the time passed on, she mastered the art and today her creativity and passion can be seen in the pieces she designs.

Every piece she designs is unique and is never duplicated or repeated. Her distinct and signature style can be seen in every piece that is rolled out of her studio. Listen to your jewellery tale!!!

pecialising in fine, kinetic jewellery, Victoria’s work is inspired by the beauty of natural forms; her signature botanical lockets featuring miniature articulated flowers that gently emerge and unfold from within. These moving designs are inspired by the sentimental nature of lockets, in that sometimes the most precious and treasured elements are hidden beneath the surface. Using traditional techniques with precious metals and diamonds, every tiny petal is hand formed and precisely engineered to create these beautiful impressions of the natural world.

Special Feature

Sunflower Locket

Beautiful and intricate, Victoria’s signature flower lockets feature tiny articulated flowers that emerge and unfold from within. These contemporary lockets are reflections of nature at work, and the captivating element of opening each flower into bloom evokes an endearing sense of theatre and play. Just as in a traditional locket, the most important and precious parts of Victoria’s creations hide inside.

Thistle Locket Necklace – Handmade And Kinetic

The fine detail and skilled craftsmanship of each delicate flower remains a secret until revealed by the wearer, and it this element of intrigue and a shared experience that gives this precious kinetic jewellery its sentimental qualities. These unique flower jewellery pieces make the perfect gift for anyone looking for contemporary anniversary jewellery, something special for a milestone birthday gift, or a gift to celebrate the birth of a child (known as a ‘push present’). These memory-marking jewels soon take on stories and become heirloom jewellery; treasured keepsakes to be passed down through generations.

NAC JEWELLERS 1917

Begun by N Anjaneyalu Chetty in a 150 sq ft space in North Mada Street, Mylapore, in 1973, the organisation has grown in leaps and bounds thanks to their age-old mantra of providing quality and service to their varied clientele. Times were tough, and the newly established jewellery brand’s primary target audience was the highly educated community of the area. In the midst of a real challenge of selling to a discerning clientele, N Anjaneyalu Chetty emphasised two primary goals for his store – quality and service. Even four decades on, that time-honoured tradition continues to hold NAC in good stead. Ananatha Padmanaban joined his father in 1977, as a 16-year-old. They moved from a rented store to their own, exclusive 2,400 sq ft showroom down the same street in Mylapore. “In 1998, NAC was commissioned to make the Diamond Crown for Goddess Padmavati in Tirupathi. A piece of rare workmanship, the glittering crown is one-and-a-half feet high, offering a spectacular sight to pilgrims.

“Are the diamonds in my jewellery of good quality?”

“How do I know if my diamonds are genuine or no?” “Is there any resale value or buyback value for the jewellery I purchased?”

www.zadok.com

“How can I be sure of what I have purchased or am going to purchase?”

IMPORTANCE OF JEWELLERY CERTIFICATION Every jewellery piece we own, purchase or gift has an emotional value attached to it. The emotions attached to owning something precious is part of human nature. When we doubt our decisions, we often look up to another to guide us into clarifying our doubts and help us become informed buyers. We often find ourselves in a dilemma when it comes to the quality of the diamonds, gemstones or metal content of the jewellery we own. In the first part of this series we will deal with some of the most common questions regarding jewellery certification. This is just the beginning of a very informative series on jewellery, diamonds, coloured stones, certification and education.

Lab & Education

Jewellery is like a biography. A story that tells the many chapters of our life. So what is a jewellery grading report? A jewellery grading report commonly known as a jewellery certificate is a grading report issued by a 3rd party. The report provides general information on the quality of diamonds, gemstones and metal content used in the jewellery.

How different are jewellery grading reports compared to loose diamond reports? Loose diamond grading reports are issued for diamonds which are not set in any jewellery. These reports confirm a polished natural diamond’s authenticity and provide a detailed description of its key characteristics, the so-called 4Cs: Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut. Jewellery grading reports on the other hand are issued for diamonds or gemstones which are mounted in a piece of jewellery. These reports provide a general description of the jewellery, the diamonds or gemstones it contains and the precious metals of which it is made.

Who issues these grading reports? Grading reports are mostly issued by internationally reputed and recognized gemmological laboratories.

How can you become an informed customer? You can become an informed customer by asking questions to the seller, educate yourself by learning more about diamonds, gemstones as well as jewellery and understand the report by reading the information printed in the report, their terms and conditions.

SKY-DWELLER OYSTER, 42 MM, OYSTERSTEEL AND YELLOW GOLD.

A distinctive technological masterpiece protected by 11 to 14 patents depending on the model, the Rolex Sky-Dweller provides the information global travellers need to keep track of time at a glance. Launched in 2012, the Sky-Dweller is a compelling timepiece of revolutionary design that blends to perfection mechanical sophistication and ease of use.

MODEL FEATURES

ROLESOR Gold is coveted for its lustre and nobility. Steel reinforces strength and reliability. Together, they harmoniously combine the best of their properties. A true Rolex signature, Rolesor has featured on Rolex models since the early 1930s, and was trademarked as a name in 1933. It is one of the prominent pillars of the Oyster collection.

MODEL FEATURES

WHITE DIAL

A fixed inverted red triangle on the dial points to the chosen reference time – the time at home or at the traveller’s usual workplace – on the off-centre 24-hour disc. At a glance, this 24-hour display clearly distinguishes daytime hours from night-time hours in the other time zone. The dials now feature rectangular index hour markers and longer hands, as well as a Chromalight display with long-lasting luminescence, which enhances legibility.

The Sky-Dweller is fitted on a solid-link Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel, in the case of the white Rolesor version, or, for the yellow Rolesor version, an Oyster bracelet combining Oystersteel and 18 ct yellow gold. The Oyster bracelet benefits from the new concealed attachment system beneath the bezel which ensures seamless visual continuity between the bracelet and case. It is equipped with a folding

MODEL FEATURES

9001 MOVEMENT The Sky-Dweller is equipped with calibre 9001, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Protected by seven patents, it is one of the most complex calibres ever developed by the brand. Its architecture, manufacturing quality and innovative features make it singularly precise and reliable.

The two time zones are displayed simultaneously. Local time is indicated by the conventional centre hour, minute and seconds hands. It can be set quickly and easily by means of a mechanism that allows the hour hand to be adjusted independently in one-hour increments both forwards and backwards. Neither the minute and seconds nor the reference time in the second time zone are affected. And, since the watch is not stopped, accuracy is preserved. Reference time in the traveller’s usual place of residence or work is read on a rotating off-centre disc. A fixed inverted red triangle points to the wearer’s chosen reference time. The disc’s 24-hour display allows travellers to clearly distinguish daytime hours from night-time hours in the distant time zone (for example, 10 p.m. versus 10 a.m.). The date change is linked to local time and occurs within a few milliseconds at midnight. So the date displayed in the aperture is always the current date in the wearer’s local time zone.

Beauty in its craftmanship What’s unique about this kind of jewellery is that it is one of a kind and cannot be made with the same kind of craftsmanship and finesse. The art is a dying art where the craftsman who designs and manufacture this are very few. This particular piece is almost 200 years old and bought from one of the known Chettinad families in South India.

It is not all in the name ANTIQUE JEWELLERY V/S ANTIQUE LOOKING JEWELLERY • A jewellery can be qualified as antique if its manufacturing dates back to at least minimum of 70 years or more while antique looking jewellery is manufactured in the recent or new. • Only, ancestral jewellery that is passed on from one generation to the other constitutes antique jewellery while antique looking has no ancestry. • The mode of antique jewellery production is either extinct or a dying art. While antique looking jewellery is a mainstream business and done now • The jewellery will date back to a particular era or have a history to it while the antique looking may not hold history. • Did you know that a genuine antique jewel will have an old world charm and an unfinished look, while an antique looking finish will have an artificial dull look with cleaner finished motifs.

Jhimikki Kammal

The

origin and journey of Temple Jewellery dates back to several centuries and according to some of the present day manufacturers it is as old as the ninth century. This type of jewellery obviously derived the name from their purpose that they adorned the deities in the temples. They stand as a significant expression of our aesthetic and cultural history. The Chola and Pandya dynasty of Tamilnadu, the Wodeyars of Mysore, the Krishnadevaraya dynasty, various temples of South India and Central India, Bengal and Odisha were home to a variety of striking jewellery with intricate design. They were connoisseurs of jewellery crafting and housed skilled artisans in well equipped workshops.

The Madurai Temple is known for owning some unique and valuable pieces of Temple Jewellery, particularly the crowns embellished with navaratnas or nine gems. It is believed that on various auspicious occasions like the Chithirai festival, the temples of various gods and goddesses were given ornamental offerings some of the fine specimens of which can still be seen in various temples of Tanjavur. Temple Jewellery were considered an asset to the temples since they were made of pure gold and natural, precious stones sourced from various parts of the country. “The designs and patterns were more based on the creativity of the artisan and availability of raw materials rather than any prescription.”, says Mr. R. Muthukrishnan who is a temple jewellery maker by profession and hails from a family of seven generations of this craftsmanship. Most often the motifs were inspired from nature and mythology. There used to be patterns of the temple Gopuram or the temple entrance towers incorporated into long chains and necklaces. “Swans (hamsam), peacocks (mayuram), elephants (gaja), snake heads (nagapadam),

a variety of flowers especially lotus (padmam) were beautifully adopted into motifs and designs of jewellery. The Navaratnas or the nine precious gems were often used together in neck pieces or early rings to symbolise the nine gods of the Hindu Universe. I had the blessing to work closely with Kalakshetra and its founder Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale. She personally went to all major Temple towns to research and revive the craft of making Temple jewellery. The dancer usually uses a head set chutti, Chandran (moon) on the left and Suryan (sun)on the right signifying the feminine half and masculine half. There is also a legend that once Lord Shiva cursed Goddess Parvathi and she descended upon Earth. As she walked into Earth, she carried with her the Sun and the Moon. The hair is adorned with Rakkodi and Jadai Bille. This signifies the spine. In those days there used to be a five headed Kalinga design of the Rakkodi suggesting the episode of Kalinganarthanam.” He recalls with great pride, how he and a couple of Kalakshetra teachers would sit in a workshop near the green room and create the jewellery

needed for various Kalakshetra productions. Over forty crowns used for various characters in the dance drama were created by him as authentic Temple jewellery which he claims were both simple and elegant on stage with the lights. Temple dancers in ancient times were residents of the temple premises. They were privileged to use the antique jewellery of the deities during performance offerings. With passage of time, thus Temple jewellery became the most used and popular among classical dancers. “Old jewellery used pure gold, uncut and natural stones and were totally handmade. They used to fit the stones into the metal by using natural wax. Then thin gold sheets were hammered ,stuck on the edges and chiselled for perfection.

is also a government approved artisan. Thus we find that originating from temples as the adornments and assets of the deities, temple jewellery became the primary ornaments of the temple dancers. From then to becoming the current day popular jewellery of classical dancers, from the priced possessions of various royal dynasties to current day popular antique jewellery worn by many for several occasions like weddings, temple jewellery have indeed not just remained the hallmark of great craftsmanship and creativity but also carry with them tales and legends from the history, mythology and nature. As we try to find out more about what stories these headsets, jhumkas, neck pieces, Rakkodi and waist belts have to say let us take a look at some of the traditional designs below.

Today there is technology and the process is slightly different. We use pearls from Hyderabad, Rubies and stones sourced from various granite quarries. And the metal commonly used used is silver with gold plating to make it affordable for today’s times. Temple jewellery is also made from Panchaloham (an alloy of five metals) “ says Mr. S. A DIAMOND IS FOREVER!

natural diamond is an enduring symbol of love and commitment and Forevermark, the brand from De Beers Group, is here to help you select the right one for you this festive season!

pear, and emerald are some of the most popular. Cut is also the factor most involved in the sparkle of a polished diamond. Cut shows the brilliance, fire and scintillation of a diamond.

When buying a Forevermark diamond it is helpful to know about the 4Cs – the universal diamond grading system. Cut, color, clarity and carat are some of the traits that give a diamond its unique personality.

Diamonds occur naturally in all colors of the rainbow. Polished diamonds are graded for minute variations in depth of color, from ‘colorless’ to ‘light yellow’ and ‘light brown.’ This is known as the D (‘exceptional white’) to Z (‘tinted color’) color scale. Forevermark inscribes diamonds from D to L colors as well as all fancy colors.

However, it is important to remember that the 4Cs are only four of the many characteristics of a diamond and that no two diamonds are the same, even if they share the same 4Cs. Every single diamond is a unique, inimitable miracle of nature. You can be assured any Forevermark diamond you choose, goes beyond the 4Cs and will be beautiful because it has been individually selected to receive the Forevermark inscription by our experts, who are backed by 130 years of diamond expertise. Carat is a measure of weight. One carat (1 ct) equals 0.20 grams and is divided into 100 points. Forevermark diamonds are available in 0.08 carat and larger. Cut refers to the shape of the diamond. Round, princess, cushion, oval, marquise,

Clarity measures a diamond’s purity. Clarity refers to how free a diamond is from tiny naturally occurring characteristics, blemishes and inclusions. Only diamonds with Clarity grades from Flawless to SI 2 are eligible for Forevermark, and Forevermark only selects those diamonds in which the inclusions do not interfere with the beauty of the diamond. While you can have confidence that every Forevermark diamond is beautiful, rare and responsibly sourced, Forevermark provides the added assurance of a certified grading report. This report presents an accurate blueprint of the Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat of each Forevermark diamond, maps the exact qualities that make the diamond one of a kind, and confirms that it is natural and untreated.

Why Kerala is ‘Gold’s own country?

Kerala is known as Gods Own Country but in fact it is Gold’s Own Country too. Universally the demand for gold is always inversely proportional to the board rates. But in Kerala it is slightly different. The affection for gold started since Roman times. Kerala had several trading ports and was one of the main hubs for spices.

The spices from the shores of Kerala were so valuable that the Europeans had no qualms exchanging them for Gold. Thus, for the Keralites Gold became a metal of prestige and pride. The rich kingdoms of Kerala treasured their gold and a fine example of it is the Padmanabhaswamy temple located in the capital city.

Feature

In

Kerala there are around 6000small scale as well as around 10 very large scale players in this industry. Most of popular jewellery brands of India are based in Kerala. Gold is part and parcel of the life of keralites. This metal is an inevitable one in all the major functions of the people of this land. Even then there was a small setback in the sale of this metal in the pre GST era. But after the introduction of GST the demand for this yellow metal has been recouped.

Not just an investment… it is an emotion Price of gold over the decades has risen sharply. Since the past 10 years the rate of gold has shown an increasing trend of around 120%. This has made it a strong means to invest in. Most of the middle-class people of Kerala usually set aside a small percentage of their salary to invest in Gold. This is the reason why major jewelleries in the state had implemented gold purchase scheme with regular and small instalments starting from Rs 1000/-. Such schemes have created great acceptance among the middle class and lower middle class customers. Even the youngsters have started following the footsteps of their immediate predecessors in investing a small percentage of their savings in gold. A normal trend which is seen in this state is that once

a girl child is born her parents start investing in gold as they know that gold has a quality which would transpire a women’s life into eternal bliss. The recent crashes and the inherent risk in investing in the stock markets also push people to invest in this metal. Like a land which has lots of jewellers Kerala is also a land of many micro finance companies which accept gold as securities for lending. This also has impacted in the increased demand for Gold in Kerala as it proves to be an investment which can be converted in to money at any time.

Unparalleled afinity for gold The recent developments in this industry like that of online gold trading, light weight gold ornaments, affordable diamond jewellery etc has also resulted in the acceptance of gold jewellery among the youths of Kerala. Kerala also features one of the most transparent methods of gold trading in the country. It is here where the 100% barcoding system, rate tags, 100% hallmarking etc has been implemented first in this country which has attracted many customers even from other states to Kerala. Kerala has always been and will be always

Celebrating the

Daughters of Today Society is constantly evolving and progressing. The expectations we have of each other, the way we relate to one another, we find often ourselves in a state of evolution. At the centre of this is the daughter of today. She’s modern, independent and strong-willed, who in her own unique way, will make the choices she needs to so she can always be the best version of herself and redefine the world around her. Platinum Evara in its Daughter’s Day campaign celebrates this new-age daughter and pays tribute to her rare qualities that drive her to make these rare choices.

One such daughter is captured in a lead film. This daughter is a perfect example of a daughter of today – secure, spirited, confident. Even when her choices are rare or difficult, this confidence holds good. No wonder she has commanded the respect of her new family with her actions and demeanor, as she redefines the traditional dynamic between daughter-in-law and father-in-law. The film is also a reflection of in-laws today who are less critical and judgmental and are increasingly appreciative and affectionate.

Platinum Jewellery

“This campaign represents those daughters who have remained true to themselves and broken away from the conventional mode to make bold choices. With Evara we want to celebrate these #DaughtersOfToday with the rarest and most precious metal, Platinum. It is our way of telling the world that these independent, strong-minded daughters are the future and with the support of their loved ones, they can only soar further,” said Sujala Martis, Director, Consumer Marketing.

Pravin Sutar, Executive Creative Director, DentsuWebchutney, said, “The world as we know it is in the process of changing and it is our daughters who are at the centre of it all. They’re redefining relationships; they’re changing traditions, all the while enjoying the respect of everyone around them. It is these daughters that we wanted to celebrate in our campaign by showing the world how rare and special they are.”

Apart from the film, with its other assets the campaign seeks to recognise & acknowledge different kinds of modern daughters, who have all ultimately made rare yet inspiring decisions, especially when it comes to their weddings & the lives that follow. The campaign is designed to ask all such women to contribute their stories so that they might be celebrated. From asking for books as a wedding present to financing her own wedding, these #DaughtersOfToday truly deserve to be celebrated with a metal as rare as Platinum. first step in choosing one is to decide on its shape. Being available in a wide range of shapes, one should select the perfect shape to reflect ones’s style, taste and personality. Just like DNA, diamonds also have a unique characteristic. Post its recovery from kimberlite, it is finely cut into different shapes. The shape is determined by the raw form in which it has been procured, which also decides the shape of the diamond. These specifications influence its final look. The brilliance of the diamonds is based on its refraction and reflection, which have a direct link with the shape. The shape is linked to its cut and the cut to its radiance and shine. : Diamonds are formed deep within the earth, and under extreme heat and pressure, they are susceptible to internal marks (inclusions) or external marks (blemishes). Inclusions can be considered as nature’s birthmarks, and these play a pivotal role in its clarity and value. Flawless diamonds having no inclusions are exceptionally rare and expensive. Diamonds sold in the market contain inclusions that are undetectable to the naked eye.

: The carat is the universally accepted standard unit of measurement that indicates the weight of diamonds and precious gemstones. One carat equals 200 milligrams or 0.2 grams. Welcome to the world of

I am here to answer your questions related to the fascinating world of gems and jewellery. I may not be able to answer all the questions but I will try to give you the best suggestions. You may send your questions to the J Mag anonymously or with your initials.

I have an old pearl necklace of my great grandmother which has of lately started cracking, what is wrong with the pearls? – KM Dear KM, There is nothing wrong with the pearls. Pearls are organic in nature and hence if proper care is not taken, they will start to get damaged. If you are storing your pearls in any plastic pouches or in any air tight pouches, I suggest to remove them from such pouches immediately. Wipe your pearl necklace with a dry muslin cloth, keep a small glass or water where you store your pearls. Pearls need moisture to keep their beauty lasting long. Avoid using any chemical including make-up, cream, perfume on your pearls. The damaged pearls cannot be repaired but we can always prevent it from deteriorating further.

Madame Bijou

Hi Madame Bijou, my mother’s gold chain has a few areas where the colour is looking diferent from the colour of gold, should I get it tested? – SK Dear SK, Gold in its purest form needs to be mixed with diferent metals to make it more stronger and durable. Although you have not mentioned which is the colour in these areas, it would be likely that the alloy used is not of good quality. You can get it tested in various authorized testing centres depending on your location. Such tests will indicate the actual amount of gold in the chain. Hope this helps.

I recently purchased a diamond ring having a 0.20 carat diamond in it, my family has said it was a mistake because there is no resale value for a diamond, what should I do? – DB Dear DB, Diamonds are a rare mineral found in nature having a resale value depending on its 4Cs also known as its quality factors. As long as the diamond does not get damaged due to harsh wear, resale of diamonds can take place. Ask the jeweller from whom you purchased the diamond about the resale value since buy back policies difer from shop to shop.

Is an American diamond a real diamond or a piece of glass? – LD Dear LD, American Diamond also known as CZ or Cubic Zirconia is not glass nor a diamond. The properties of a CZ are diferent from diamond and glass. It only looks like a diamond hence it is also called as an diamond imitation or simulant.

Dear Madam, can I wear a blue sapphire without getting afected by its astrological efects? – RG Dear RG, A blue sapphire is worn in certain parts of the globe for astrological purposes and in certain parts for fashion or as a statement of royalty. With regards to its astrological efect, it is best to consult with your astrologer on the same.
