Catch the buzz of the festive season with a summer night soaked in the unforgettable sounds of Fleetwood Mac.

GO YOUR OWN WAY THE STORY OF CHRISTINE McVIE Be swept away by the intriguing story of Fleetwood Mac’s most famous songbird this summer!

Starring Catherine Alcorn Written by Diana Simmonds Directed by Jason Langley Musical Director: Isaac Hayward

Christine McVie was the girl who started out as a school teacher, picked up a bass guitar and began to sing the blues. Then she joined Fleetwood Mac and made rock history. Commissioned by Kate Ceberano for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Go Your Own Way is the story of one of rock’s most famous songwriters and a celebration of great music and the tempestuous life of Christine McVie. At the height of the Mac’s success she left the band to live a quiet life. Then she agreed to return; then she tweeted,“Sorry folks. No tour.” And then she changed her mind! Always an intriguing figure, Christine’s contrary attitude to global fame, ridiculous wealth, love and loss, personal privacy, songwriting and music is at the heart of her story. In a career that so far spans four decades, the enigmatic McVie is brought to life in this play-with-music by the award-winning Catherine Alcorn (The Divine Miss Bette) who brings her own magic to some of the most memorable songs of the 20th century including Little Lies, Everywhere, Don’t Stop and Songbird.

LOVE UNSPOKEN AMELIA FARRUGIA & DAVID HOBSON

February

Having previously performed together at Opera in the Vineyard, two of Australia’s leading operatic stars grace the stage of The Joan for this exclusive concert. Featuring highlights from great works in opera, operetta and musical theatre, this will be a night to remember — and right around Valentine’s Day it’ll be the perfect night of romance. This dynamic duo will recreate some of their favourite roles performing heavenly duets from La Boheme, The Merry Widow, The Phantom of the Opera, Candide and more. Amelia Farrugia is well known to music lovers as La Stupenda’s successor, such is the power and beauty of her voice. Since her opera debut in 1994, she has sung many leading roles for Opera Australia, performed with all the ABC Orchestras and appeared internationally with a lengthy list of distinguished conductors.

PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF OPERA AUSTRALIA

Australian tenor and composer David Hobson is one of Australia’s best known operatic and recording artists. Like his co-star, he has sung many roles for Opera Australia and both state and international opera companies, including his award winning performances of Rodolfo (La Boheme) and the title role in Orphee. Both consummate professionals, they’ll weave their special magic on stage for just one enchanted evening — don’t miss it.

Bring yourself, bring your friends, bring your hair. Afro combs will be provided.

BLACK BIRDS

Emele Ugavule and Ayeesha Ash have a few things in common; names that seem difficult to pronounce, hair and the colour of their skin. The list could continue but nothing unites them more than their experiences as brown gals with Afros. Is their hair so big because it’s full of secrets? Find out as they discuss, explore and offer a vision for what it means to be a woman of colour in modern day Australia. Adding spice to the traditional theatrical form and reimagining the rule book, this show will blend music, movement, spoken word and real stories to create a performance experience like never before. Created and performed by Emele and Ayeesha, Black Birds has been supported in various forms by Festival Fatale, aMBUSH Gallery and Footscray Community Arts Centre. The performance will draw in actors, artists as well as musicians and will offer audiences at The Joan the chance to be first to see this innovative new work.

Australia’s only high octane cruelty-free rock-n-roll circus returns to Penrith after its sell-out season back in 2014, and this time they’re audaciously unpacking the myths of modern Australia. Set in a beautiful yet chaotic model kit world, Model Citizens seamlessly blends the risk, beauty and rawness of acrobatic circus with pumping live music, stunning lighting, breathtaking physical improbability and no shortage of absurdity. Breaking conventions of scale, oversized everyday objects become an intriguing world of possibilities for this all-human ensemble — as these enlarged set pieces offer new life as exciting and unexpected circus equipment. Imagine hand standing on the top of an upright giant peg or juggling whilst balanced on an oversized stack of weighing scales… Audiences will be taken on a visually and emotionally charged journey by the multi-talented Circus Oz ensemble, exploring what it really means to be a model citizen in our ‘lucky’ country today.

THE

7 STAGES

By Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman

OF GRIEVING

Here’s your chance to see a new adaptation of one of Australia’s most important plays, created 20 years ago and still speaking volumes today.

Fri 16 June 7.30pm Sat 17 June 2pm, 7.30pm

One of Australia’s most exciting young actors Chenoa Deemal spins poignant stories of different people from different mobs — tear-streaked tales of tragedy side by side with joyful celebrations of simple survival.

TICKETS

Funny, devastatingly sad, and as important as ever, The 7 Stages of Grieving traverses the phases of Aboriginal history, inviting us to face hard truths, join hands and grieve together. Penned by Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman, their original script has been skilfully updated to reflect today’s political climate, including current political references to make it relevant to a contemporary audience. The refreshed version of the play also reflects the changing attitudes of Australians, exploring Aboriginal peoples’ grief and the hope for reconciliation. And perhaps most importantly, The 7 Stages of Grieving opens a dialogue about the issues that separate and unite Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Australia today. This will be a truly memorable night of theatre.

A Dirty Pretty Theatre & Critical Stages production Adapted from the Emile Zola novel by Gary Abrahams Director: Gary Abrahams

A thrilling new adaptation

of Emile Zola’s landmark novel

THÉRÈSE RAQUIN Over 150 years after it was written, Zola’s gothic thriller Thérèse Raquin — a story of murderous star-crossed lovers — is a carnal, cruel and corset-filled masterpiece of French realism. Think Downton Abbey to the max! Thérèse Raquin is a superb examination of corrupted morals, set in the notoriously dingy backstreets of Paris in the late 19th century. Thérèse lives a life of servitude and is married off to her sickly cousin in a loveless, arranged marriage. But her life is suddenly turned around when her husband’s friend, Laurent, arrives and they begin a passionate, feverish affair. What follows in this masterpiece of French literature makes for a gripping, corseted thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.

With a heightened sense of melodrama and a raw and immediate passion. Thérèse Raquin is a genuinely affecting, thrilling, emotional rollercoaster.

5 Stars. The intricate and extravagant costumes designed by Chloe Greaves , spectacularly remaster the movements and lifestyle of 1860 s gothic romance, tight fitting corsets and puffy long gowns further restricted the freedom of women... Each forbidden, adulterous, passionate scene is

exaggerated... the danger, the tragedy, the raw emotions are all the more powerful and have the audience spellbound. Melbourne. Arts. Fashion

A Shaun Parker & Company production

BLUE LOVE

Original direction by Shaun Parker and Jo Stone Outside Eye/Dramaturg: Kate Champion Performed by Shaun Parker, Lucia Mastrantone and Jo Stone

Pop culture + dance = love. It’ll be slightly whacky, utterly beguiling, beautiful in its movement and hugely entertaining. It’s Blue Love and it’s been made for your pure enjoyment. Infused with intense physical theatre, film and dance, Shaun Parker’s Blue Love is a poetic and satirical take on the clichés of pop culture, romance, coupledom and suburbia. From a fantastic place where TV soap meets art-house film, Glenn and Rhonda Flune take the audience on an expedition in search of the perfect relationship. Blue Love is inspired by famous works of art, theatre, music, and film, all of which deal with the concept of love. This quirky, characterbased work is a multi-media, physical theatre comedy: accessible, challenging and enormously fun.

So, whether you want to calm your nerves or double your disillusion, we all need a fresh serve of laughter, dance and foolishness. Bell Shakespeare

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE By William Shakespeare

Director: Anne-Louise Sarks

Shakespeare. Whether you love or loathe the Bard there’s no denying his place as one of the greatest writers in the English language. Bell Shakespeare — one of the world’s foremost producers of his work — turn convention on its head and take audiences to surprising places in this politically charged modern day interpretation. This masterfully envisioned production tackles the prejudices and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays. Money makes the world go around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it. Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it. This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, The Merchant Of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice.

DAISY MOON WAS BORN THIS WAY Trying to de-code your teen? Struggling with Gen Z? Find out what makes them tick* and end the year on a magical note, with a brand new coming of age comedy exploring life as an outsider. Bright eyed and eccentric 14-year-old Daisy Moon is President and Founder of the Little Monsters Club for Misfits, where she holds her club meetings inside the dusty beachside bus stop on her front lawn. She’s the club’s only member. Her 18-year-old brother Noah couldn’t be more different. An elite athlete on the cusp of cracking national competitions, his world falls apart when he’s caught cheating on a time trial. They both dream big and they’re both stuck in a world too small. Set in a coastal town, this play draws on Australian iconography of the faded beachside surf club, but turns it on its head by drenching it with pop-culture and contemporary teen attitude. We are thrilled to be bringing you a brand new play by the up and coming writing talent that is Emily Sheehan (Rodney Seaborn Award Winner). Produced by The Q, The Joan’s theatre making arm, and directed by Nick Atkins, Daisy Moon Was Born This Way will be comedic, kooky and will draw on elements of magic realism. Fuelled by the awkward and ferocious energy that is teenage hormones this new Australian play is a coming of age dramatic comedy about making mistakes and learning to love yourself anyway.

The Q Creating new work, generating pathways, seeing ideas come to fruition and helping creative dreams come true – this is what The Q is all about.

With its roots back in lunchtime theatre in the Circular Quay of the 1960s, before its move to Penrith in the anything-goes late 70s, The Q is hugely significant in Australia’s theatrical history and holds a vital place right at the heart of Creative Penrith. These days, as well as making great theatre, The Q supports young theatre-makers, writers, directors, dancers and other creative shapeshifters; it works with like-minded partners and nurtures new talent and ideas as well as generating a sense of community for young artists in Western Sydney. Many roads lead to The Q — residencies, events, workshops, artist development projects, larger scale productions and even a mini-festival. Pick a point on the path and get involved. In 2017 The Q will produce two works — Black Birds and Daisy Moon Was Born This Way — as part of the Subscription Season. TICKETS Ticket prices and packages vary across companies and performances so be sure to check thejoan.com.au for details and book online, by phone or in person at the Box Office.

PENRITH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Penrith Symphony Orchestra is recognised as one of Australia’s leading pro-am orchestras. As Orchestra-in-Residence at The Joan, it presents the only annual concert season in Western Sydney featuring major symphonic, oratorio and operatic repertoire. It collaborates regularly with leading professional soloists, emerging artists and composers, and with local choirs. In 2015, the orchestra partnered with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and The Joan to establish Penrith Strings, a youth orchestral training program which is the first step towards a youth orchestra affiliated with Penrith Symphony Orchestra.
