As we begin our 2019–2020 season, we welcome the new Chair of the Joffrey Board of Directors, Anne L. Kaplan. Anne is a dear friend to me and a champion of the Joffrey. When the Joffrey struggled with debt and uncertain cash flow, her leadership helped us establish an internal line of credit. When the Joffrey contemplates bold programming or a fresh model for a fundraising gala, she encourages us to take a chance. The arts need people like Anne L. Kaplan. It is appropriate that we open our season with Jane Eyre: the story of a strong and thoughtful woman, written by pioneering author, Charlotte Brontë, and choreographed by the immensely talented Cathy Marston. We are proud to introduce Cathy’s work to the Joffrey audience. I hope this will be the first of many collaborations. Cathy has a rare gift for story telling without words. As you watch the performance, I hope you appreciate how much information is being conveyed by gesture and movement. It has been a pleasure to see her working with the dancers in the studio…she does not speak about “steps” but rather about “communication:” about the power of a glance or an outstretched hand. “… women feel just as men feel; they need exercise for their faculties, and a field for their efforts, as much as their brothers do; they suffer from too rigid a restraint, too absolute a stagnation, precisely as men would suffer; and it is narrow-minded in their more privileged fellow-creatures to say that they ought to confine themselves to making puddings and knitting stockings, to playing on the piano and embroidering bags.” Charlotte Brontë says it best,

The opening of the Joffrey season with the Chicago Premiere of an original full-length piece that embodies female creativity and determination also heralds a great personal moment for me as I begin my tenure as Board Chair. I am surrounded by impressions after these first three months: it is challenging to keep astride of the footprints of my predecessor, Zach Lazar, whose imprimatur is deep and whose leadership encouraged success for his followers. The great people who work and dance every single day at the Joffrey do so with humor and rigor personifying how true collaboration looks. Ashley Wheater sets us all up to enjoy the highest forms of dedication and joy. And my friend, colleague and now mentor, President and CEO Greg Cameron, is a constant inspiration to us all. His calm, rational, joyous demeanor belies the fervor of his devotion to the Company. How fortunate we all are to enjoy the benefits of these great people. SYNOPSIS

Jane Eyre PROLOGUE Jane is running, her journey hindered by imaginary male figures — her inner demons. She collapses and is discovered by St. John Rivers. He carries her to his home and, with his sisters, aids her recovery, listening to fragments of her story that escape from her dark dreams. ACT I An Orphan Young Jane is orphaned and raised without love by her wealthy Aunt, Mrs. Reed. Her cousins Eliza, Georgiana, and John torment her until she retaliates against John’s physical abuse. Horrified by what she misconstrues as Jane’s arrogance and violence, her Aunt asks Reverend Brocklehurst to take Jane away to Lowood School for Orphaned Girls. Lowood School The girls lead a rigid life of deprivation under their cruel headmaster, Reverend Brocklehurst. Jane befriends Helen Burns, but when Helen dies of consumption, an anguished Jane finds herself questioning her own destiny. Grown Up Reaching adulthood, Jane has completed her studies and becomes a teacher to the orphans. However, she yearns for new experiences in the wider world and accepts an invitation to become governess at Thornfield Hall. Thornfield Jane is welcomed to Thornfield by the housekeeper, Mrs. Fairfax, and her new pupil, Adele. Her employer, Edward Rochester, returns home from his world travels. Dark and passionate, he is surprised to meet his intellectual match in Jane and treats her with a respect she has never known. All is not peaceful at Thornfield, however; Jane senses secrets within the whispering walls. One night, Jane is woken by the smell of smoke and rescues Mr. Rochester from his flaming bed. As they stand in the fire’s aftermath, an intimacy is born that both excites and scares Jane. INTERMISSION

A Proposal Rochester returns to the ballroom where Jane waits alone. He attempts to rekindle the intimacy between them, but she pulls back, convinced that he is engaged to Blanche Ingram. When Rochester proposes marriage to a stunned Jane, she initially believes he is mocking her but eventually accepts, unaware of a mysterious woman in red watching them from the shadows. A Wedding The household prepares for Jane and Rochester’s wedding. As the intimate ceremony begins, the woman bursts into the room. She is Bertha Mason, and she claims to be the wife of Mr. Rochester. He admits that Bertha, crazed as she is, speaks the truth, and that he cannot legally make Jane his wife. With the help of Grace Poole, his servant and Bertha’s “keeper,” they restrain and return Bertha to her secret chamber in the house. Utterly heartbroken, Jane cannot conceive of a future with Mr. Rochester and flees alone into the moors, where she collapses.

SYNOPSIS

ACT II Jealousy A party is held and Jane feels uncomfortable in the presence of Rochester’s grand guests, especially the beautiful and wealthy Blanche Ingram, who seems to have caught Mr. Rochester’s attention. Jane remains at the party at Mr. Rochester’s insistence until the festivities are interrupted by a servant, Grace Poole, who enters inexplicably agitated and injured. Mr. Rochester sends the party guests away whilst entrusting Grace Poole to Jane’s care.

Taken In St. John Rivers discovers Jane almost unconscious and takes her home to his sisters. She is very ill and experiences distressing dreams about her past. Gently, the women nurture Jane back to health. St. John sees a potential wife in Jane; however, Jane recoils from his cool yet insistent proposal, recognizing that he will never love her with the same passion as Mr. Rochester.

ACT II (continued) Burnt A determined Jane returns to seek Mr. Rochester at Thornfield, but in her absence, there has been a huge fire, ignited — for the second time — by Bertha Mason. With every reason to wish Bertha dead, Mr. Rochester still attempts to save her from her own hand but fails — she dies, and he is left blind. Reunited Jane finds Mr. Rochester a broken man. Yet as he recognizes her presence, he falls into her arms. Jane proposes marriage to Mr. Rochester, and as they embrace, forever as equals, Jane looks ahead to her future. She has not only found love but gained ownership of her own destiny.

A Jane Eyre for the Twenty-First Century: How Cathy Marston Pulled Brontë’s Masterpiece Off the Page and Onto the Stage By Chava Pearl Lansky Cathy Marston’s first memory of Jane Eyre is from when she was eight years old. The child of two English teachers, books were a staple in her home. Her love of literature has influenced much of her choreographic oeuvre. In addition to her 2016 production of Jane Eyre for Northern Ballet, she has created ballets based on Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita, D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts. When approaching a new work, Marston finds joy in digging deep into a familiar story, discovering how a book’s structure might work on the stage. Jane Eyre is famously one of the first novels written in the first person; this gave Marston additional freedom in structuring the story for the stage. “Jane sees things really intensely,” she says. “It gave me the ability to tell things not as they are, but as they seem to her; they can be more extreme, or dream-like, or shadowy or bright. It’s quite different than describing things in a naturalistic way.” One of the ways that she demonstrates this is by starting the ballet in medias res and telling the story in flashback, an idea she took from Cary Fukanaga’s 2011 film adaptation. “The book is told in hindsight, because it’s Jane telling the story about herself. So, it made sense to have an older Jane remembering her younger self, rather than telling it in present tense,” she says. Another example of Marston’s dream-like approach to Jane’s point of view are the D-Men, Marston’s Greek chorus of shadowy, ominous figures created to sweep Jane along from scene to scene. The D-Men (the D standing for both death and demon) represent the looming presence of men in Jane’s life, robbing her of her agency; they often block her path, and force her to find creative ways to move around them. “The D-Men symbolize Jane’s insecurity,” says Marston. “They stop her from becoming all that she knows she can be. As she comes to terms with herself, she puts these male voices that echo in her head to sleep.” Marston’s Jane holds fast to her agency until the curtain falls. Rather than end the ballet with Jane and Rochester locked in an embrace, Marston has her protagonist walk downstage, framed in a spotlight like a Victorian portrait. This is Marston’s ode to Brontë’s famous line: “Reader, I married him.” Breaking the fourth wall, we are reminded that Jane truly is in control of her story. 10 | The Joffrey Ballet

JANE EYRE Orphaned at a young age and raised in hardship, Jane’s strong spirit helps her overcome the challenges she faces as she develops from an intelligent yet emotionally volatile girl to an astute and fulfilled woman.

YOUNG JANE Reflecting on her childhood, Jane remembers her young self as she navigated the difficult years living with the Reeds and through her years at Lowood School.

EDWARD ROCHESTER Jane’s employer and the master of Thornfield. A dark and impassioned man with a hidden past that threatens to ruin him.

ADELE VARENS Jane’s pupil at Thornfield and possible illegitimate daughter of Mr. Rochester, who is her guardian.

BERTHA MASON Mr. Rochester’s insane wife. She is confined to a secret room at Thornfield and guarded by a servant, Grace Poole.

HELEN BURNS Jane’s best friend at Lowood School. She endures a short but miserable life that she bears with a graceful dignity.

MRS. FAIRFAX The housekeeper at Thornfield who befriends Jane.

REVEREND ST. JOHN RIVERS Ambitious and cold, St. John takes in a desolate Jane after she flees Thornfield. After a short acquaintance, he feels she would make a suitable wife for the life he wishes to lead.

BLANCHE INGRAM Beautiful and desirable, Blanche is a socialite who often frequents Thornfield and hopes to marry Mr. Rochester for his wealth.

REVEREND BROCKLEHURST A clergyman and the supervisor of Lowood School for Orphaned Girls. He is wealthy, cold, mean-spirited and treats the girls with disdain and cruelty.

AUNT REED A cold-hearted relative who is forced to take Jane into her care when Jane’s parents pass. Aunt Reed favors her own children over Jane and sends her to Lowood School for Orphaned Girls, under the care of Reverend Brocklehurst.

BIOS ASHLEY WHEATER The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Born in Scotland and raised in England, Ashley Wheater was trained at The Royal Ballet School. Wheater began his professional career with The Royal Ballet and danced at the London Festival Ballet, The Australian Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet. In 1997, he became Ballet Master at San Francisco Ballet, and in 2002, Assistant to the Artistic Director. In 2007, Wheater was appointed Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet. New work is the life blood of a company, and he has introduced numerous premieres to the repertoire. In 2008, the Boeing Corporation recognized his commitment to community outreach and diversity in the world of dance, presenting him the “Game Changer” award. In 2010, Wheater, representing The Joffrey Ballet, was named Lincoln Academy Laureate, the highest honor presented by the State of Illinois. The Chicago Tribune selected Wheater as 2013 “Chicagoan of the Year” for his contributions to dance. In 2014, Wheater accepted the Chicago Spirit of Innovation Award for The Joffrey Ballet and in 2015, he received the University of Chicago Rosenberger Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Creative and Performing Arts. He also serves as The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director of the Joffrey Academy of Dance, the Official School of The Joffrey Ballet.

SCOTT SPECK Music Director Scott Speck has inspired international acclaim as a conductor of passion, intelligence, and winning personality. In addition to his position as Music Director for the Joffrey, he is the Artistic Director of the Chicago Philharmonic and Music Director of the Mobile (AL) and West Michigan Symphony Orchestras. He has led major orchestras at London’s Royal Opera House, the Paris Opera, Washington’s Kennedy Center, San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House, and the Los Angeles Music Center. He has been Conductor of the San Francisco Ballet; Music Advisor/Conductor of the Honolulu Symphony; and Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Opera. He was named Principal Guest Conductor of the China Film Philharmonic in Beijing. Speck is the co-author of three of the world’s best-selling books on classical music and dance: Classical Music for Dummies, Opera for Dummies, and Ballet for Dummies. These books have been translated into twenty languages and are available around the world. A Fulbright scholar and summa cum laude graduate of Yale; Speck is a regular commentator on NPR, the BBC, ABC Australia, and Voice of Russia. He has been featured in TED talks and at the Aspen Ideas Festival. His writing appears in numerous magazines and journals.

CATHY MARSTON Choreographer Cathy Marston is an award-winning choreographer, Artistic Director, and Clore Cultural Leadership Fellow. After education in Cambridge, she spent two years at The Royal Ballet School, before launching a successful international career now spanning twenty-five years. Marston’s great gift is to join artistic dots, creating form for stories, emotions, and ideas. She inherited a passion for literature from her English-teacher parents and is often drawn to explore narrative through dance.

As Associate Artist of The Royal Opera House from 2002–2007, she created a critically acclaimed interpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts, among other works. During her six-year tenure (2007–2013) directing the Bern Ballet in Switzerland, her British ‘respect for the playwright’ became influenced by the ideas of German ‘Director’s Theatre,’ resulting in her unique, hybrid signature. Lending new perspectives to old narratives in her versions of Jane Eyre (Northern Ballet/ABT/The Joffrey Ballet), Dangerous Liaisons (Royal Danish Ballet), Lady Chatterley’s Lover (Les Grands Ballets Canadians), or in her historically-inspired Witch-hunt (Bern Ballet) and Victoria (Northern Ballet/National Ballet of Canada): all are examples of her danced-stories, distilled to their essence and displaying high-quality technique and unflinching expressive integrity. Marston partners both with large companies such as San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and The Royal Ballet as well as smaller ensembles such as Ballet Black in the UK. Marston’s recent work for this company, The Suit, won the National Dance Award for Best Classical Choreography (2018). Her choreography has been performed in ten countries, by over forty companies, in theatres such as the Metropolitan Opera House (NY), The Royal Opera House (London), The Kennedy Centre (Washington DC), Sadlers Wells (London) and the Grand Teatro Alica Alonso (Havana), as well as filmed for cinema and television. ‘Emotionally driven narrative and stripped-back literary adaptations (is) a territory pretty much owned by Cathy Marston at the moment.’ (The Guardian, 2019)

BIOS PHILIP FEENEY Composer Philip Feeney studied composition at Cambridge University and in Rome. As a pianist he has worked with Northern Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet in Britain, and the Martha Graham Company. As a composer he has collaborated with choreographers including Christopher Gable, David Nixon, Michael Pink, Didy Veldman, Michael Keegan-Dolan, Derek Williams, Adam Cooper, Sara Matthews, and the hip-hop artist Jonzi D. For Northern Ballet his full-length scores have included Cinderella (Gable, 1993); Dracula (Gable/Pink, 1996); The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Gable/Pink, 1998); A Streetcar Named Desire (Veldman, 2001); Hamlet (Nixon, 2008); and Cinderella (Nixon, 2013). For Cathy Marston, Jane Eyre was followed by Victoria (2019).

PATRICK KINMONTH Set and Costume designer and Scenario Patrick Kinmonth is an internationally acclaimed director, set and costume designer for opera and dance. As a designer for opera Kinmonth has collaborated with Robert Carsen, Pierre Audi, Guy Joosten and Anish Kapoor, for dance with Cathy Marston, Pontus Lidberg, Fernando Melo and Aaron S. Watkin. Kinmonth’s creations have been seen at Teatro alla Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Opéra de Paris, Teatro Real and La Monnaie among others. This season he directs Tristan und Isolde at Oper Köln.

BRAD FIELDS Lighting designer Brad Fields works with ballet and modern dance companies around the world including American Ballet Theatre where he also served as Lighting Director for the past 25 years. Recent design credits include Nacho Duato’s Romeo and Juliet, Alexei Ratmansky’s Harlequinade and Whipped Cream, Jorma Elo’s Trigger Touch Fade, Christopher Wheeldon’s Thirteen Diversions, Benjamin Millepied’s I Feel the Earth Move, Twyla Tharp’s Rabbit and Rogue, Michelle Dorrance’s Dream within a Dream, and Nicolo Fonte’s Ghost Stories. CHRISTELLE HORNA Stager Christelle Horna was born in France where she studied ballet at the Paris Opera School and with Marika Besobrasova in Monaco. She danced as a principal dancer at the Ballet de l´Opéra de Nice, France, performing all major classical roles before joining the Compañía Nacional de Danza, Spain in 2001 under the direction of Nacho Duato. She has worked with world-renowned choreographers including: Nacho Duato, Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Ohad Naharin, Jacopo Godani, Wim Vandekeibus, among others. From 2010, she has held positions as Associate Director and Teacher at the Municipal Dance School in Oleiros, Spain, and was the Rehearsal Director at the Centro Coreografico Gallego including productions by Nacho Duato, Amaury Lebrun, Johan Inger, and Kenneth Tindall. Since January 2017, she is rehearsal director at the Northern Ballet directed by David Nixon. In this position she has been working on all of Nixon´s productions, as well as resident choreographer Kenneth Tindall and guest choreographer Cathy Marston.

JENNY TATTERSALL Stager After training at The Royal Ballet School, 1989–1993, Jenny Tattersall danced with The Royal Ballet, 1993–2002. She was then a freelance dancer working with many choreographers including Cathy Marston, Fin Walker, and Kim Brandstrup. In 2007–2014 she became the resident rehearsal director with the Bern Ballet where she assisted many leading choreographers. Since 2015, she has worked with Wayne McGregor and Marston assisting them both on new productions and re-staging old works.

ABOUT THE AUDITORIUM THEATRE DESIGNED BY LOUIS SULLIVAN AND DANKMAR ADLER at the behest of Chicago businessman Ferdinand Wythe Peck, the Auditorium Theatre was hailed as one of the most beautiful venues in the world when it opened on December 9, 1889. Peck charged the architects with creating a Theatre for the People that was open to all Chicagoans. When the theatre opened, Chicago was in fierce competition with many cities in a bid to host the 1893 World’s Fair. Many notable figures of the day, including President Benjamin Harrison, attended the opening night performance at the theatre and were impressed by its perfect acoustics, beautiful architecture, and incredible sightlines. The attention that the theatre attracted helped convince the U.S. Congress that Chicago was ready to host such an event as important as the World’s Fair. During its early decades, the Auditorium hosted leading entertainers like John Philip Sousa and the Ziegfeld Follies, and political figures including Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington. It was the home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the opera, and even hosted indoor baseball games. During World War II, the theatre became a Servicemen’s Center (complete with a bowling alley!) for traveling soldiers. After the war, the theatre closed until 1967, when it reopened with a performance by New York City Ballet. Throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s, famous performers took to the stage, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and Prince, among many others. Since its opening, the theatre has hosted some of the world’s premier dance companies, including The Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Bolshoi Ballet. Starting in the 80s through today, the theatre presents many Broadway musicals including The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. In 2015 and 2016, the theatre hosted the televised NFL Draft, giving over 7 million home viewers the opportunity to see inside the beautiful theatre. Today, the staff and board of the Auditorium Theatre continue to preserve and restore the National Historic Landmark. More than a quarter of a million people visit the theatre each year to experience music shows, slam poetry competitions, dance performances, and beyond, making the Auditorium Theatre a true staple in Chicago and the rest of the world. 28 | The Joffrey Ballet

In September 2019, Anne L. Kaplan succeeded Zachary Lazar as The Joffrey Ballet’s Board Chair. She’s well prepared from her work as Board Chair of Chicago’s Museum Of Contemporary Art (MCA) from 2015–2018, prior Joffrey service as Executive Committee Vice President and member of the Strategic Planning, Development, and Campaign Planning Committees; substantial other civic contributions as a philanthropist and trustee of the Mayer and Morris Kaplan Family Foundation; and as an acclaimed interior designer whose work has been published by Architectural Digest and Chicago magazine. Because Better (formerly known as Make It Better) magazine is once again Joffrey’s Season Content Partner, Founder Susan Blankenbaker Noyes was honored to do the following Q&A with Kaplan.

SBN. You juggle many powerful and interesting roles through work, as a philanthropist and civic leader, likely within your family too. How do you describe yourself?

AK.

I love the arts! As a goer and doer, always interested and energetic, I’m very excited by whatever goes on around me. I never get tired of going to galas and events for organizations, seeing what story they are telling. Also, I have a great family, which includes three children and nine grandchildren. They don’t actually live here, but they visit often and love attending the Joffrey. We go on many adventures too, particularly skiing. Last year we went skiing in Japan. I love, love Japan. I like to have fun. Fun and joy. That’s one reason I love the Joffrey — there’s so much joy in the building!

SBN. Your efforts as MCA Chair included guiding the museum through a remodel and leading its 50th Anniversary Celebration. How will this inform your Joffrey leadership role?

AK. The MCA taught me how to work as a team. Nobody ever asked what their job

description was; they just pitched in and got the job done. I did learn a lot about leadership, however, they made it easy. I do feel like a serial Board Chair; but I did take a one-year hiatus.

SBN. The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater and President and CEO Greg Cameron describe you as “always leading with mission.” Were you always a natural leader?

AK. Oh no! I couldn’t possibly imagine myself as a “Chairman” in the past. I came out of an

era where we did as we were told — we were more reactive. But I did start to learn leadership when I took a designer role that was offered early in life. I knew such opportunities came rarely and I valued independence of thought and creativity. Eventually, I realized I could do a lot of things and do them well. Being a designer definitely trained me to be a leader too. If you keep your eyes open, you learn, gain experience. In a sense, everyone becomes a role model.

SBN. Thanks for the good segue to our next topic. Quietly, women long have been

visionaries and leaders in the arts. For example, MCA was founded with a donation from a significant female artist. The founding of a Women’s Board secured Joffrey’s Chicago future. The Women’s Boards of several other arts organizations are considered true development powerhouses too — like the Lyric Opera and Art Institute. Now — in the #metoo era — there is nothing quiet about the power of women collaborating for the greater good. How will you leverage this powerful moment in time for women in your role here?

AK. Well said and exactly right. Let’s start with the Joffrey Women’s Board — they are

so accomplished! Every member is so smart. They come with big ideas and no one is quiet. They make us known in the community, and they invite the community in too. No one wants Joffrey “on a pedestal.” We open with Jane Eyre, about a woman, written by a woman, and now choreographed by a woman, Cathy Marston.

SBN. What are your goals as Chair? AK. The impending move to the Lyric looms large. Our motto, “Joffrey Moves,” brings a

whole new metaphor! How do we make this transition historic and iconic? Ashley (Wheater) has a wonderful, inspired season lined up, which we are excited to announce early next year. We are planning family events and we envision a fulsome experience for the entire community too.

A big goal is to be able to fully endow live music. Dancers and audience experience movement and music which is brought to life for both when the music is live. We’re already working with our dancers to ensure that they have a good future after the Joffrey. But I want us to do even more. They rarely dance long. Sometimes they don’t have a good education because they focused fully on dance so young. We already help them learn about professional opportunities and are forming collaborations with community colleges. Like our own children, we want all of our dancers to have a wonderful future! 38 | The Joffrey Ballet

SBN. Let’s get more personal. Please tell us your favorites. AK. Books. I just finished The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne. But I love reading too much to ever pick just one book or favorite author.

Food. I love all food! I love going to new restaurants, all types of them — from holes-in-thewall to all the amazing new developments throughout Chicago. I’ll never live long enough to explore all the great new restaurants popping up. But I want to! Art. I love modern art; but, I’m most fascinated by contemporary art. If you think about a piece long enough, you will understand what the artist is conveying. Art is very important in my work as a decorator too. The architecture is a big influencer, but I listen to my clients and try to inject art that takes it to a whole new level.

SBN. Anything else you want to tell us? AK. Bring the men in your life to the ballet too. It’s as much fun as watching basketball — the dancers are just as athletic too.

FACILITIES AND SERVICES EFROYMSON PATRON SERVICES CENTER is located in Aisle 1 of the main floor and is open throughout performances to assist patrons with any needs they may have.

CONCESSIONS are available throughout the theatre lobbies.

OUTSIDE FOOD AND BEVERAGE ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE THEATRE.

RESTROOMS are located on the lower level and in the Baryl Family Lobby (third floor). Accessible and all-gender restroom facilities are located in the southwest corner of the main lobby and on the third floor.

ACCESSIBILITY: The Auditorium Theatre is accessible to all patrons and fully complies with ADA requirements. Various levels of accommodations are available to patrons who require assisted listening devices, signed performances, or accessible seating. Additionally, our Efroymson Patron Services Center office, located in Aisle 1 of the main lobby, is open throughout performances to assist patrons with any needs they may have. Miu Tanaka First-Year Joffrey Company Artist Hailing from Chiba, Japan, Miu Tanaka has trained around the world, earning first place in the Machida Ballet Competition (2015) and Top 12 in the senior category at the 2018 Youth America Grand Prix. In the fall of 2018, Miu joined the Joffrey Academy of Dance Studio Program where she performed principal roles in Paquita and Coppélia. After only a year, Miu joined the Joffrey’s main Company and was cast in Jane Eyre — her debut Joffrey Ballet performance — in the role of Young Jane.

OF THE JOFFREY Suzanne Lopez Ballet Master & Principal Coach Suzanne Lopez joined The Joffrey Ballet in 1991, performing title roles in Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet, Ashton’s Cinderella and the Sugarplum Fairy in Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker. Suzanne joined the Joffrey staff as Ballet Master in 2016 and has been instrumental in presenting first-time collaborations with the Lyric Opera and Cleveland Orchestra and world premiere works like Yuri Possokhov’s Anna Karenina.

Keesha Beckford Youth Division Liaison — Joffrey Academy of Dance Keesha Beckford is a multi-disciplinary dance instructor who began her dance studies in Queens, New York, before graduating cum laude from Princeton University. Keesha has shared her talents at positions with the Charlotte Ballet, the UNC Charlotte dance department, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and Dance Center Evanston. She is currently an adjunct professor at Columbia College and inspires hundreds of young dancers as the Joffrey Academy of Dance’s Youth Division Liaison.

OF THE JOFFREY Shari Massey Deputy Director & Chief Financial Officer After spending the last six years as Ravinia Festival’s Chief Financial Officer, Shari Massey joined the Joffrey’s executive staff in October 2018. Shari has spent over 20 years serving Chicago’s most venerable cultural organizations including Chicago Architecture Center, Chicago History Museum, and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
