2015–2016 SEASON Joffrey Ballet | 1
One of my roles as Artistic Director is to curate new work for The Joffrey Ballet. In this capacity, I observe as much dance as I can, and I receive and review videos from choreographers around the globe. A few years ago, I became familiar with the work of two young choreographers, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Myles Thatcher. In their work, I saw careful craftsmanship, emotional resonance and a fresh point of view. I invited them to create new dances for the company. Behind the scenes, both artists selected dynamic / inspiring music and worked with designers to create compelling environments for their work: scenery, props, costumes and lighting. Time in the studio is precious. In just over a month, Annabelle and Myles choreographed the dances you will see today. I first saw Christopher Wheeldon’s Fool’s Paradise when it was created on his former company, Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, in 2007. I was enchanted! That was also the year I became Artistic Director, and I knew the Joffrey should have this piece in its repertoire. Fool’s Paradise only recently became available for performance outside the original company, and I am proud that we are able to premiere the work. The New York Times reviewer Roslyn Sulcas used the phrase “precarious beauty” to describe the ballet, and continued, “…it is Mr. Wheeldon’s surprising, yet somehow inevitable movement that makes this beauty come fully alive.” Fully alive! It seems completely natural to introduce new work to the Joffrey audience as part of our Millennials program. This is dance for the 21st century: part of a living, growing and evolving art form.

WELC
“Fully alive” indeed describes Joffrey as we celebrate 60 years of dance. I am certain that Joffrey founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino were smiling this past summer as the University of Chicago recognized Ashley Wheater’s impact on the international world of dance and his commitment to Chicago by awarding him the prestigious Rosenberger Medal. Ashley’s leadership impacts all aspects of the Joffrey mission — a dance company committed to artistic excellence, dance education, and engaging our city’s youth. This past summer, over 1,500 students from as far away as Australia and as close as North State Street filled our studios with curiosity, creativity, and learning. Through the Joffrey Academy of Dance and Community Engagement programs we change lives — eight of our current Company members are former Joffrey Trainees. On September 16th, the Joffrey was honored by the City of Chicago with the Fifth Star Award. As Mayor Emanuel stated, “It is through the gift of dance that we can combine music and movement along with the physical and spiritual, and the social qualities of our lives.” xcellence is also abundant beyond the studios. Last season saw the E establishment of the Joffrey’s first endowment thanks to the Nureyev Foundation’s generous challenge grant and generous donors who embraced and supported the challenge — thank you! ou, our audience and donors, keep the dancers on stage, the students Y in class, and the Joffrey “fully alive.” We extend our profound thanks to Millennials Presenting Sponsor Alphawood Foundation Chicago, Mammatus production sponsors Elizabeth Yntema and Mark Ferguson, and Fool’s Paradise production sponsor the Jane Ellen Murray Foundation. ur 60th anniversary season includes three world premieres and O two Joffrey premieres — it is that careful balance of tradition and innovation that makes the Joffrey so unique. We thank and applaud your support. Let the dance begin...

choreographer with an edge” by the Temecula Performing Arts Examiner, spent four weeks working with the Joffrey dancers creating Mammatus. The title is derived from the Latin word for a specific cloud formation. For this work, she decided to take a different choreographic direction, moving away from dissecting human behavior to create a completely new environment inspired by animal movements and the energy in nature. “In nature, nothing is symmetrical, so I was looking to create an organic chaos,” said Lopez Ochoa. “I like to give myself a challenge. For me, the exciting part of choreography is to try something new.” The score, Weather One by composer Michael Gordon, begins with a thunderstorm, immediately setting the pace of the piece. Lopez Ochoa worked closely with set and costume designer Dieuweke Van Reij to create a brand new environment. The set is an asymmetrical, surrealistic world complete with a large LED light sculpture and fog, as if the dancing is happening on a cloud. Shell-like bodices seem like skin cracked open in random patterns. Groups of dancers migrate around the stage like abstract birds or insects forming sinuous, organic duets, wearing black and white costumes that reflect how hot and cold air collide to make a storm.

PASSENGERS — Myles Thatcher created Passengers, a Joffreycommissioned world premiere, after a year of travel as a protégée (mentored by Alexei Ratmansky) in the Rolex Mentor & Protégée Arts Initiative. Intrigued by his fellow travelers, Thatcher wondered, “Who are they? What are their stories?” This ensemble piece for nine dancers conveys the universal senses of anxiety and fear, anticipation and hope. Nine suitcases symbolize the burdens we carry, what holds us back. Yet they depict freedom as well, allowing these passengers — particularly three protagonists — to take new steps on their journeys. (At one point, the suitcases literally pave a dancer’s way.) Though non-narrative, this ballet is filled with stories, individual pasts that we interpret through relationships, movement quality, their willingness to let go (or not) of the things they carry. These people are struggling, but they are not stagnant. There is hope for them. Passengers features a minimalist set design by Alexander V. Nichols that transports us from train stations to passenger cars, and music by Steve Reich that creates tension without dictating movement. The score pulses beneath the choreography, demanding that we move forward along with the dancers.

FOOL’S PARADISE © by Christopher Wheeldon —
Christopher Wheeldon’s Fool’s Paradise was created for his former company Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company and had its premiere at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in 2007. The dance was inspired by the magical romanticism of Joby Talbot’s music, originally written as a contemporary score to the 1916 silent film The Dying Swan. Wheeldon asked Talbot to fully orchestrate the score for his company and brought on American fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez to design the costumes, creating a unique fusion of new fashion, new music and dance.
Fool’s Paradise blends classical technique with a modern sensibility in choreography of great beauty. Bathed in warm light, the dancers move through solos, duets and trios, occasionally settling into still, sculptural tableaux. The work contains a moving pas de deux and builds to a spectacular arrangement for the whole ensemble as gold petals shower down on the stage. “I wanted to capture the innate drama of the music without telling a literal story,” said Wheeldon. “It’s as if the couples, trios and groupings are passing through a fantasy realm reminiscent of the fairyland of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

In that same year, she was hailed “rising star of the Dutch dance scene” (NRC newspaper) and only seven years later the Temecula Performing Arts Examiner wrote: ”Ochoa is truly a masterful choreographer with an edge for what dance can and should be in this constantly changing industry.” Lopez-Ochoa is a sought-after choreographer that has created works for many companies around the world such as the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Dutch National Ballet, Djazzex, Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Gran Canaria Ballet, Gothenburg Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, BalletX, BJM-Danse (Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal), Luna Negra Dance Theater, Ballet National de Marseille, Saarbrücken Ballet, Jacoby & Pronk, Chemnitzer Ballet, Ballet Hispanico, Whim W’Him, IncolBallet de Colombia, Finnish National Ballet, Compañía Nacional de Danza Madrid, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Scottish Ballet, The Washington Ballet, Ballet Nacional Dominicano, Augsburg Ballet, Ballet Austin, Atlanta Ballet, Grand Rapids Ballet, Moscow Ballet, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, West Australian Ballet, Ballet Nacional Chileno, Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, Ballet Manila, Ballett am Gärtnerplatz München.

MICHAEL GORDON Composer — Weather One (Mammatus) Composer Michael Gordon merges subtle rhythmic invention with incredible power in his music, embodying, in the words of The New Yorker’s Alex Ross, “the fury of punk rock, the nervous brilliance of free jazz and the intransigence of classical modernism.” Over the past 25 years, Gordon has produced a strikingly diverse body of work, ranging from large-scale pieces for high-energy ensembles and major orchestral commissions to works conceived specifically for the recording studio. Transcending categorization, this music represents the collision of mysterious introspection and brutal directness. Gordon has been commissioned by Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the BBC Proms, BAM, and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Arts Festival, among others. His music has been featured prominently in the dance works of Emio Greco | PC, Wayne McGregor, Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal, Heinz Spoerli, Ashley Page, and Club Guy & Roni.

STEVE REICH Composer — The Four Sections, Triple Quartet (Passengers) Steve Reich was recently called “our greatest living composer” (The New York Times), “America’s greatest living composer.” (The Village Voice), “...the most original musical thinker of our time” (The New Yorker), and “...among the great composers of the century” (The New York Times). From his early taped speech pieces It’s Gonna Rain (1965) and Come Out (1966) to his and video artist Beryl Korot’s digital video opera Three Tales (2002), Mr. Reich’s path has embraced not only aspects of Western Classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz. “There’s just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and Steve Reich is one of them,” states The Guardian (London).
JOBY TALBOT Composer — The Dying Swan (Fool’s Paradise) Born in London in 1971, Joby Talbot studied privately with Brian Elias and under Simon Bainbridge at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Talbot’s catalogue is diverse, comprising scores for dance and screen, works for orchestra, choir, soloists and chamber groups, as well as a recent and critically acclaimed opera debut with Everest, premiered by The Dallas Opera in early 2015. Talbot’s collaborations with Christopher Wheeldon include Fool’s Paradise (2007), Tide Harmonic (2013) and the full-length Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (2011) and The Winter’s Tale (2014). Further prominent works for dance include Chroma (2006), Genus (2007) and Entity (2008) with Wayne McGregor and Chamber (2012) with Medhi Walerski and Nederlands Dans Theater. The Winter’s Tale will have its North American premiere with the National Ballet of Canada in November 2015, while Fool’s Paradise will also appear at the Wiener Staatsoper in late October.

ON RECEIVING UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO’S PRESTIGIOUS ROSENBERGER MEDAL Within education and ballet, we test natural limitations and explore the contours of the human spirit. With science, with music, with mathematics, with art, people find their voices, each in a different way. For some, the path may lead through stone courtyards with ivy-covered walls. For others, the path may lead to the stage. The Rosenberger Medal represents the common purpose shared between what I do and what you do. We explore the universe in hopes of understanding our place in it. — Ashley Wheater

THOUGHTS ON DESIGN
Though our primary focus with the Millennials program is on the choreography and the movement of the dancers’ bodies, we are impacted emotionally and intellectually by the creative designs which form an “environment” for the dance. Students of design are taught that every object, every color, every beam of light, makes a visual impression. The job of the designer is to shape the atmosphere in service to the work of art. If well executed, the choreography finds its full expression. Our first piece, Mammatus, (with choreography by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and design by Dieuweke Van Reij, pictured here) is set in an abstract world where the definition of “floor,” “wall” and “ceiling” are obscured. This may be the center of a cloud, in reference to the title. Branching from one corner of the stage is a “tree” composed of LED rods. This stark and surreal landscape is inhabited by bird-like dancers wearing tunics resembling cracked shells. Myles Thatcher developed his concept for Passengers with scenic designer Alexander Nichols and costume designer Gregg Benkovich. While abstract, the environment is familiar…a train station humming with human activity. The primary prop and metaphor for this piece is the suitcase. Each suitcase contains the possessions of a traveler: filled with cumbersome baggage or the potential of a new destination. Christopher Wheeldon created a lush and intimate world for his dancers in Fool’s Paradise. With honey-colored light striking shimmering petals falling from above, human bodies move from one abstract pattern to another. There is beauty in the changing shapes, rather like watching colored glass crystals in a kaleidoscope. The lighting design for each of these pieces has been realized by designer Alexander Nichols. The light changes as the program progresses, reinforcing the distinct tone of each work.

Q&A WITH THE MILLENNIALS
CHOREOGRAPHERS We sat down with Millennials choreographers Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Myles Thatcher and Christopher Wheeldon to talk about everything from their motto, favorite dance step and thoughts on working with the Joffrey.
CW
A surprising one.
MT
Whatever the theme of the step of the ballet I’m working on at the moment. It’s constantly changing.
ALO
Sliding.
MT
I find Crystal Pite (Canadian choreographer) endlessly interesting. I think I’d have lots to talk to her about.
CW
Mark Rothko and George Balanchine, so I could ask them what they would create together. I mean, amazing!
WITH AND WHY?
ALO
Right now, I’d love to sip on a margarita with painter Frida Kahlo (Lopez Ochoa is creating a work about Kahlo’s life for English National Ballet). And, I’d love to sit with Pina Bausch and ask about her process.
IF YOU WEREN’T A CHOREOGRAPHER, WHAT WOULD YOU
ALO
A film editor.
CW
Lazy. It’s the only thing I know how to do.
MT
I guess it would be a pastry chef or a biochemist.
CW
Eat lunch.
MT
To thine own self be true. —Shakespeare
ALO
Enjoy the moment, be generous to it. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow doesn’t exist yet.
CW
I eat lunch.
ALO
I love to escape in books.
MT
Podcasts, Food Network, and wine.

WHAT’S YOUR
GUILTY PLEASURE?
WHAT COMES
MT
Binge watching some show on Netflix when I know I should be doing chores.
ALO
Red Bull. I love the taste and the effect it has on me.
CW
Lunch?
ALO
Mostly the concept and in some occasions the music. For Mammatus, I had this music in my library for quite some time — Michael Gordon’s Weather One. It was just a matter of finding the right company for it. I felt that with the Joffrey, it was going to be a good match.
CW
It depends. In the case of Fool’s Paradise, it was the music that drove the concept and the movement.
MT
I like to think the ideas are all separately out there already. It’s my job to align them, so they create something cohesive, purposeful, and beautiful.
CW
Chicago and its support of the arts. It’s a city that really cares about how the arts are woven into the fabric of its culture.
FIRST:
MUSIC, CHOREOGRAPHY, OR CONCEPT?
WHAT MAKES THE JOFFREY
UNIQUE?
ALO
MT
I agree. It’s the strength and versatility of the dancers, as well as the close-knit environment of the company.
MT
I felt very welcomed by both Ashley and the dancers. We worked very hard on the ballet, but it never seemed like “hard” work. It was an absolute pleasure.
ALO
I like the fearlessness of some of the ladies when working on duets. It’s exhilarating to see them go to their limits. They really trust their dance partners.
WHAT IS THE
ATMOSPHERE LIKE WORKING WITH THE COMPANY?
CW
44 | Joffrey Ballet 2015–2016 SEASON
It’s a luxury for a choreographer when dancers are so versatile. They can switch from classical to contemporary in a blink.
The Joffrey is a company of artists. Each individual serves as a true company member. There is great integrity on every level. Ashley honors Robert Joffrey with his understanding of how the company came to be and how the company needs to maintain these individual artistic voices in order to move into the future. It’s about real personalities onstage. Ashley isn’t afraid to draw on the influences of the past in order to make The Joffrey Ballet pioneers in the future of ballet in America.

Sylvia Preview
We are honored to welcome John Neumeier back to Chicago, with the American premiere in October of his ballet Sylvia. Though he was born in Wisconsin and studied ballet in Chicago, he has spent over forty years of his professional life as artistic director and choreographer of Hamburg Ballet. He is one of the most highly-regarded choreographers working today and his vast repertoire of created work is performed around the world. Recently he was awarded the prestigious Kyoto Prize as Laureate in the Arts and Philosophy. This is a very special homecoming! Sylvia is a masterpiece, and we are fortunate to add this ballet to our bank of artistic assets. Created for Paris Opera Ballet in 1997, Neumeier found a fresh way to tell the story of Diana, mythological Goddess of the Hunt, and her protégé, Sylvia. His inspiration was the beautiful musical score, (composed by Léo Delibes) and Neumeier’s desire to discover the timeless essence of the story. Neumeier compares Diana and her band of female hunters with modern athletes or business executives. They are focused on excellence and success, sometimes sacrificing their own passion and humanity as a result. Young Sylvia is striving to achieve expertise as a hunter, and is startled by her attraction to a simple shepherd, Aminta. The shepherd, aware of his own humble status, is unable to fully express his desire for Sylvia. We regret our missed opportunities, whatever they may be. This is the fundamental tension within Neumeier’s Sylvia: humans attempting to balance the drive for success with the yearning for love. Gods, goddesses and mortals entwine in webs of attraction and misunderstanding, brought to life with brilliantly organic choreography. Ambition, shyness, control, sensuality and longing: John Neumeier tackles these themes with humor, creativity and heartfelt humanity.
