At the Joffrey Ballet, we speak, breathe, and dream in dance. twenty years ago, we brought this language to Chicago, making the city our permanent home. We have since connected with thousands of you, using dance to tell stories, stir souls, and transform lives. this past season was no exception. As you will discover here in our first-ever annual report, we pushed the boundaries of the art form while honoring its roots. from our ambitious staging of La Bayadère, a masterpiece of the classical ballet canon, to Christopher Wheeldon’s groundbreaking Continuum, we showcased world-class choreographers and delighted audiences with the unexpected. We also paved the way for future generations of dance, receiving a $500,000 challenge grant from the Rudolf nureyev Dance foundation—one of the largest in the foundation’s history. establishing the Joffrey’s first endowment, this remarkable opportunity enables us to create and perform full-length story ballets. meanwhile, we have fostered tomorrow’s talent through our internationally recognized Academy and thriving Community engagement programs. Balance. Discipline. Emotion. The Company’s 2013-2014 Masters of Dance Season drew on dancers’ tools to transport audiences across time and space. We showcased an amazing breadth of talent—and did so across the nation with an eight-city tour. In the process, we attracted more people to the Joffrey than ever before. Together, we journeyed into the lush jungles of India with Stanton Welch’s La Bayadère, a premiere for both the Joffrey and the city of Chicago. We honored the 100th anniversary of Nijinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps with our reconstruction of its historic 1913 debut. We explored what it means to transcend boundaries in Crossing Ashland, a groundbreaking premiere from local choreographer Brock Clawson. We also fell in love. Our U.S. premiere of Krzysztof Pastor’s Romeo & Juliet brought a new level of dance mastery to Shakespeare’s masterpiece and received rave reviews. We challenged ourselves as artists and honed our storytelling, using physicality to deliver performances as emotionally riveting as they are relevant.
We continued to redefine what it means to be a 21st-century ballet company. We have always believed in cultivating our dancers’ talents and offer incredible opportunity for growth. This past season, roughly 75 percent of the Company performed leading roles, a highly unusual statistic in professional ballet. The Joffrey also remains one of the most diverse companies in the country, attracting world-class dancers from every cultural and ethnic background. Eight of our current members came directly from the Joffrey Academy, a testament to the critical role our training program plays in nurturing the next generation of artists. Since its beginning, The Joffrey Ballet has always aspired to be a company that belongs to America and we still reflect that. We look forward to continuing the journey, pushing our company to even greater heights.

For Joffrey dancer Jeraldine Mendoza, 2013-14 was a season of firsts. As “Nikiya” in La Bayadère, she performed her first leading role in her first full-length story ballet. But the real turning point, the piece that truly catapulted her out of her comfort zone, was George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante. “It’s literally everything in the ballet vocabulary in 12 minutes,” Mendoza says. “There’s an adagio, a petit allegro, a grand allegro. It’s insane.” The piece was like nothing she had ever performed. “It was never forced in my training to move as quickly as Balanchine liked,” says Mendoza, who graduated with honors from Russia’s prestigious Bolshoi Ballet Academy. “I really doubted myself.” By the time curtains opened, however, she had silenced the negativity—and nailed Balanchine’s style. “I worked really hard on my pirouettes,” she says with a laugh. “Allegro really helped me develop artistically and technically as a dancer. I was so happy and honored to perform it.”
For Mendoza, dancing at the Joffrey is all about those artistic risks. “Being part of the Joffrey is being part of a company of firsts,” she says. “It’s really great to be with a company that is daring and not afraid to think outside the box.”

With a world premiere, dancers from around the globe and sold-out performances, the Joffrey Academy of Dance isn’t just a dance academy. We are a destination for visionary creativity, as our past year proves. As the official school of The Joffrey Ballet, we train the next generation of dancers and cultivate future audiences by offering unparalleled instruction to students of all ages and backgrounds. Eight Joffrey Company members have trained at the Academy. Alumni have also found positions with American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and other top companies. In May, Academy dancers presented six sold-out shows of The Blue Bird of Happiness, a world premiere choreographed by Academy Artistic Director Alexei Kremnev. More than 100 students delighted audiences with the show’s imaginative movement, which is destined to be part of the Academy’s repertoire for years to come. Dancers in our competitive Trainee Program, which prepares students 17 and older to dance professionally, performed throughout Chicago. Many appeared in The Joffrey’s Ballet’s The Nutcracker, La Bayadère, and Romeo & Juliet, as well as Chicago’s Classics in the Park series, the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the 100th annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Daley Plaza.
In all our work, we aim to foster a more diverse dance landscape. The Academy awarded 43 training scholarships to promising young dancers from the Joffrey’s Community Engagement programs. We also showcased innovative works from young choreographers Justin Allen, Stefanie Batten Bland and Norbert De La Cruz III through our national competition and residency program, Winning Works: Choreographers of Color Awards. To strengthen the Joffrey’s reputation and attract more international talent, the Academy created the Joffrey Studio Company, a program that enables ten outstanding students to train with Academy Trainees free of charge and perform with the main company. We now also offer student visas, making our training more accessible to the world’s most promising dancers. Proving the Academy is a sustainable investment in the Joffrey’s future, we outpaced enrollment goals and exceeded $2 million in gross revenue. Above all, we shared the language of dance, built confidence, instilled discipline, and nurtured creativity for hundreds of young dancers.

I Speak Dance Camila Ferrera Academy Trainee and Joffrey Studio Company Dancer
Camila Ferrera will never forget her first day at the Joffrey Academy. The New Jersey native had been admitted to the summer intensive, but waitlisted for the school’s prestigious Trainee Program designed to prepare students for professional dance careers. Ferrera had come to Chicago hoping the summer would turn into something more. After the first session, it did. Ferrera got an e-mail from Academy Artistic Director Alexei Kremnev telling her she was officially a Trainee. “It was a huge weight taken off my shoulders,” the dancer recalls. “Then I thought, ‘Now I have to prove to everybody that I deserve this.’” That drive fueled her training. Ferrera is now a member of the Joffrey Studio Company, a new scholarship program for ten outstanding dancers, and has danced with the main company in Joffrey’s Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. “Being here gave me the tools to be a professional dancer and an artist,” says Ferrera. Throughout the year, the Academy’s mix of classical and contemporary choreography challenged her to “figure out new ways of moving.” Meanwhile, the individualized attention she received helped her “become a more confident dancer.”
Ferrera’s ultimate professional goal? Joining The Joffrey Ballet. “The Joffrey is one of the most unique companies I’ve really ever seen,” she says. “No two dancers look alike and yet they come together so gloriously to dance as one.”

One of the most important places we speak dance is in the community. This past year, Joffrey’s Community Engagement programs brought the joy of dance to thousands of children from Chicago’s most underserved neighborhoods. Thanks to a landmark gift from local philanthropist Marcus Lemonis, we expanded our outreach for elementary students in Chicago Public Schools, where severe budget cuts have limited arts education. The newly renamed Joffrey Lemonis Bridge Program offers a highly structured dance experience that teaches first and second graders life skills, creative expression, and physical awareness. The program also aims to identify the next generation of dancers of color. Roughly 90 percent of students come from low-income households and would not typically have the opportunity to explore classical dance. This past year, 16 Lemonis Bridge students received scholarships to further their training at the Joffrey Academy of Dance. Our longest running school program, Middle School Dance Clubs (MSDC), continues to flourish. Joffrey Teaching Artists worked weekly with students at 17 schools, culminating in a citywide concert to showcase student choreography. Testifying to the strength of our training, three MSDC students were recently accepted into the city’s prestigious Chicago High School for the Arts.
Meanwhile, dancers in our Exelon Strobel Step-Up Program, a rigorous scholarship program for promising high schoolers, entertained audiences throughout the city, performing Thriller at the Sun-Times Halloween Gala and CHAOS at the Joffrey Spring Gala. Young dancers also performed throughout Chicago as part of the Joffrey’s After School Matters Summer Intensive, a seven-week partnership program that gives high schoolers an opportunity to work with Joffrey dancers, Joffrey Teaching Artists, and guest choreographers. Finally, we brought the power of dance to students on our stages. Through our student matinee program, more than 5,000 Chicago students enjoyed the magic of The Nutcracker, a Joffrey holiday tradition. Such experiences create unforgettable memories. For many, a Joffrey program is the beginning of a lifelong love of the arts. For some, it is something even more profound: the first step in a dance career that might not have happened without the Joffrey.

I Speak Dance Pierre Lockett Director of Community Engagement from 2004–2014
When Pierre Lockett was appointed Director of Community Engagement in 2004, the Joffrey offered one program—Middle School Dance Clubs—in two schools. Today, Community Engagement teaches dance to more than 4,500 students annually. After more than 25 years with the Joffrey, Lockett has transformed countless lives through his passion and leadership. “If you can dance, you can speak,” says the former Joffrey Ballet dancer. “I know what dance has given me in my life,” he says. “I’m trying to give other people that same experience.” Lockett recently departed his Joffrey post to bring innovative dance education to Chicago children as an independent consultant, and continues to share his insight with the Joffrey as an advisor to the program that he helped grow. In his work, Lockett sees dance as a powerful tool that teaches young people to achieve their potential in any field. “The skills that you learn—discipline, teamwork, confidence—are not necessarily there to make you a professional dancer,” he says. “They are there to help you learn to work through other components of your life and they will be there long after you leave the dance program.” Parents often want their kids to experience things like classical dance, he says, but in low-income neighborhoods opportunities can be scarce. Initiatives like the Lemonis Bridge Program give students a chance to study at the Joffrey studio at no cost. To date, Lockett says, there are about 40 kids on full scholarship at the Joffrey who have come through the program.
The biggest reward of his work? Seeing the impact on the kids. “These programs have touched the lives of thousands and those lives will be changed forever,” Lockett says. “Not everyone is going to go off and be a professional dancer, but I see kids all the time and they say, ‘I remember you. I had you at Joffrey.”

The Joffrey celebrated many successes in FY 2014— including a year of strong financial results. A surplus, prior to depreciation, of $789,000 was generated thanks to high attendance at Joffrey productions, generous contributions, increased Academy of Dance enrollment, Community Engagement programs as well as control over expenses. For Sandy and Roger Deromedi, The Joffrey Ballet is more than a cultural legacy worth preserving; it’s a “perfect trifecta” of dance, music, and emotion. Since 2007, the couple has generously given time, talent, and leadership to support that experience, with Roger serving on the Board of Directors and Sandy on the Joffrey Women’s Board.

“It’s all about the dancers,” Sandy says. “Not only are they incredible athletes and classically trained ballet dancers, but they’re also actors. Every hand movement is choreographed to extract emotion from the audience.” That talent has inspired the Deromedis to support the organization year after year and to encourage many others to do the same.

For the Deromedis, those ties have only grown stronger over time. “The culture makes it feel like a family,” Sandy says. “When you’re in Joffrey Tower, everyone is passionate about what they’re doing, whether they’re a volunteer, staff, or dancer. It creates that real magical I-want-to-be-a-part-of-this feeling.”

This past season, BMO helped bring Polish choreographer Krzysztof Pastor’s groundbreaking Romeo & Juliet to the Joffrey and also sponsored the 2014 Spring Gala, the organization’s largest fundraiser. I Speak Dance Christine Du Boulay Ellis
Christine Du Boulay Ellis remembers the first time she heard about the Joffrey. She and her husband, the late Richard Ellis, both renowned dancers and teachers, were serving on a scholarship panel with Robert Joffrey. “He told us he was planning to start a ballet company,” says Ellis, who operated Chicago’s Ellis-Du Boulay School of Ballet for 40 years. Today, Joffrey’s company has become one of the most cherished parts of her daily life. “It’s my family,” says Ellis, a Women’s Board member. Two or three times a week, she’s at Joffrey Tower, watching rehearsals and volunteering her time to create a dance research library that will be housed on-site. So far, the collection includes more than 750 titles, including several first editions and signed copies. This past year, Ellis also spearheaded the Richard Ellis and Christine Du Boulay Ellis Scholarship, granting the inaugural merit award to Trainee Paulo Vitor Rodrigues de Oliveira, a current member of the Joffrey Studio Company.
Her efforts are helping to ensure Robert Joffrey’s legacy gets passed down to future generations. “I’m a ballet purist, so I love the fact that the Joffrey has such a firm base in classical ballet,” she says. “Ashley is committed to trying out new ballets, which Robert was always doing—and challenging the dancers. They are such a wonderful group of individuals. There’s no way they’re cut out of a mold.”

The Joffrey Ballet Star Society recognizes those individuals who have invested in the future of The Joffrey Ballet through a planned gift. We wish to thank the following for their commitment to our legacy as of June 30, 2014.
We are honored that the Joffrey has been awarded a $500,000 challenge grant from the prestigious Rudolf Nureyev Dance Foundation expressly to launch an endowment for the creation, production and performance of full-length story ballets. The new Rudolf Nureyev Fund at The Joffrey Ballet represents one of the largest awarded to a single cultural institution in the Foundation’s history. To meet the challenge and secure the Rudolph Nureyev Foundation’s gift, The Joffrey Ballet is responsible for raising an additional $1 million by June 30, 2015. These funds along with the Nureyev Foundation’s matching gift will create an endowment for the Joffrey to perform full-length ballets on a continuing basis.
