Dear Joffrey Patrons, Great Britain has always “punched above its weight.” For centuries, this small island, with less than ideal weather and limited local resources, has generated ideas which have sparked change throughout the world. This influence extends to music and dance as well. In the mid-twentieth century, powerhouses Ninette de Valois, Frederick Ashton, and Kenneth MacMillan created an English ballet language. Today, the vocabulary is being reimagined by a new generation of choreographers. Already at the Joffrey, we have explored the work of Christopher Wheeldon and Wayne McGregor, two of England’s fresh voices. With Across the Pond, we introduce the choreography of three young talents: Andrew McNicol, Liam Scarlett, and Andrea Walker. We are particularly proud to present one Joffrey premiere and two world premieres in this program, the first work by any of these artists in our repertoire. Andrew McNicol trained at The Royal Ballet School in London and created Yonder Blue to the beguiling, atmospheric music of English composer Peter Gregson. Liam Scarlett, resident choreographer of The Royal Ballet, shares his Vespertine, inspired by the Baroque music of Arcangelo Corelli. Andrea Walker worked with composer Ross Allchurch to create HOME, a poignant and timely narrative drawn from contemporary dance themes. The creation of new work starts with artists committed to music, storytelling, and collaboration. Andrew, Liam, and Andrea — the Joffrey Family says thank you. We also extend our most sincere thanks to Denise Littlefield Sobel for believing in the power of dance and for her support of the new in Chicago and beyond. Our showcase of English creativity continues next season with the October Joffrey premiere of Cathy Marston’s Jane Eyre. We hope you enjoy this visit to Great Britain!

2018–2019 SEASON | ACROSS THE POND

Dear Friends, For the past six years, I have had the incredible privilege of serving as Chair of the Joffrey Board of Directors. The time has come to pass the mantle. But first, allow me to look back and share a few thoughts. I am proud of this organization. During my tenure, I have witnessed bold, original work dazzle audiences for the first time; I have watched thousands of students light up at the sight of opening curtain; and I have seen young, aspiring dancers grow into first-rate professionals. Under the leadership of Ashley Wheater and Greg Cameron, the Joffrey has evolved from local icon to a world-class cultural institution, based right here in Chicago. I know that for Ashley, Greg and the entire Joffrey Family, this is only the beginning. There are more mountains to climb, more worlds to explore. And that is what I’ve enjoyed the most — the collaborative spirit and the thrill of taking on new challenges. The Joffrey continues to reach farther than it did before, shaping the future of dance for the people who love it so. It humbles me to know that I had a role to play. This experience has deepened my belief in the profound impact of dance as an art form. As importantly, it has taught me a lot about our broader community and its passion for first-rate culture. Chicago is unique in that respect. I will miss many of the responsibilities of being Chair. But while my term may be ending, the fact is the Joffrey will be a part of my life forever. Thanks to everyone who made this journey so special. With much gratitude,

Yonder Blue Above all, this piece is a response to Peter Gregson’s MUSIC the Quartets: Two. For me, his music suggests an ever-changing, expansive landscape that continues to melt, unfold, and collapse into itself over time. This expansive, musical landscape creates the idea of distance: from ourselves, each other, and the environment around us. It relates to the idea of distance between dancers, between body parts when we move — as if losing and re-finding ourselves or each other. The TITLE Yonder Blue relates to people and nature, the human and the physical, internal and external, the real and imagined. Most importantly both words move. I found inspiration from Siri Hustvedt’s wise and illuminating book A Plea for Eros. She described ‘yonder’ as “a word that wobbles,” its meaning shifts and moves. It implies distance, the space between here and there. It’s tangible yet hard to grasp, it lives more in the imagination than reality. You can never really find yourself ‘yonder,’ once you arrive you become here, and so ‘yonder’ recedes forever back into the imaginary horizon. ‘Blue’ similarly shifts and holds multiple associations. We think of nature — the infinite ocean and the boundless sky. We attribute it to the qualities of a person: honesty, integrity, loyalty — or an emotional state: feeling blue, melancholy in addition to a name, implying a person, individual, or loved one. For me this conveys a meaningful MESSAGE about the fragility of people, place, and nature. It speaks to the innate human desire for connection at the same time as the need to move alone — the tension between belonging and isolation, the individual and community. — Andrew McNicol

2018–2019 SEASON | ACROSS THE POND

Vespertine Vespertine was the second ballet that I created for Norwegian National Ballet. It came very quickly after Firebird, which was a big production. Obviously with that momentous Stravinsky score, the opulence and scale of everything was enormous, so I wanted to do something a little more pared down and slightly more nuanced and delicate. Vespertine was part of a Baroque evening. I got in touch with a small chamber orchestra based in Norway that dealt with Baroque-era music, but with a slight updated twist and electronic undertones to it and it came from there. Music is a big driving force for me. It’s your script. You don’t have words, you have music. I pride myself on being a choreographer who really is a musical one and will pay respect to the score I’m using regardless of what it is. It’s a real driving point. Every step I choreograph, that music is in the back of my head. I try and go in with a good understanding of the musical layout of it, even if I don’t have steps. The musical arc and the climaxes and the suspense it builds is a narrative layout for the piece itself. — Liam Scarlett

HOME Inspired by personal stories of being an immigrant, Andrea Walker directs the Joffrey dancers through a story of strength, resilience, and the nature of belonging, asking what happens to our identity when our idea of home is taken away. Through his signature fusion of commercial and contemporary dance styles, Walker explores what home means, within ourselves, our relationships, and our country. As an immigrant living in the country I consider to be my home, I have experienced the anxiety of feeling unwelcome, of having people question the truth of where I feel I belong. With this new production, I wanted to explore these feelings of uncertainty, and how it can feel living in a country that you weren’t born in. People all over the world face uncertain futures in places where they may have lived most of their lives. Many cross borders as children and know no other country. They finish school with normal dreams of going to college or starting a job, only to find that they’re to be treated differently than the people they’ve grown up alongside. Home is more than a house or a place. Home is security and safety and a feeling of rest. We find it in places that remind us of childhood, in other people that know us deeply, and within ourselves. The anxiety of knowing that this feeling could be taken away from you at any moment affects every part of your life – from relationships to mental health. It is this experience that moved me to create this piece with The Joffrey Ballet. — Andrea Walker

ABOUT THE AUDITORIUM THEATRE DESIGNED BY LOUIS SULLIVAN AND DANKMAR ADLER at the behest of Chicago businessman Ferdinand Wythe Peck, the Auditorium Theatre was hailed as one of the most beautiful venues in the world when it opened on December 9, 1889. Peck charged the architects with creating a Theatre for the People that was open to all Chicagoans. When the theatre opened, Chicago was in fierce competition with many cities in a bid to host the 1893 World’s Fair. Many notable figures of the day, including President Benjamin Harrison, attended the opening night performance at the theatre and were impressed by its perfect acoustics, beautiful architecture, and incredible sightlines. The attention that the theatre attracted helped convince the U.S. Congress that Chicago was ready to host such an event as important as the World’s Fair. During its early decades, the Auditorium hosted leading entertainers like John Philip Sousa and the Ziegfeld Follies, and political figures including Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington. It was the home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the opera, and even hosted indoor baseball games. During World War II, the theatre became a Servicemen’s Center (complete with a bowling alley!) for traveling soldiers. After the war, the theatre closed until 1967, when it reopened with a performance by New York City Ballet. Throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s, famous performers took to the stage, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and Prince, among many others. Since its opening, the theatre has hosted some of the world’s premier dance companies, including The Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Bolshoi Ballet. Starting in the 80s through today, the theatre presents many Broadway musicals including The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. In 2015 and 2016, the theatre hosted the televised NFL Draft, giving over 7 million home viewers the opportunity to see inside the beautiful theatre. Today, the staff and board of the Auditorium Theatre continue to preserve and restore the National Historic Landmark. More than a quarter of a million people visit the theatre each year to experience music shows, slam poetry competitions, dance performances, and beyond, making the Auditorium Theatre a true staple in Chicago and the rest of the world. 32 | The Joffrey Ballet

2018–2019 SEASON | ACROSS THE POND

Every week, Jakaiyah enjoys coming to Joffrey Tower to study ballet. Her face lights up when she talks about becoming a choreographer and her mother beams as she explains how much her daughter loves ballet.

Fifth-grader Jakaiyah is one of more than 100 students at Isabelle C. O’Keeffe Elementary School who accessed the world of dance through Joffrey Community Engagement’s Beth Levine Bridge Program. This program includes four phases, beginning with Phase I, an introduction to ballet at school. Like her schoolmates, Jakaiyah began to learn ballet technique and vocabulary through classes led by Community Engagement Teaching Artists. Because of her talent and dedication at school, she was invited to attend Phase II of the Beth Levine Bridge Program, free weekly classes at Joffrey Tower. Jakaiyah exceeded expectations and was selected to attend Phase III, a free two-week summer intensive focused on continued training taught in collaboration with the Joffrey

Academy of Dance. Her passion for the art form propelled her to new heights of success as she advanced to Phase IV; Jakaiyah received a full scholarship to the Joffrey Academy of Dance until her high school graduation. This final phase of the Beth Levine Bridge Program has the potential to advance students to the Academy’s professional training programs — our main pipeline to The Joffrey Ballet Company. Jakaiyah’s journey requires extraordinary talent, discipline, passion — and most importantly, access. Through the dedication of our staff and the support of our sponsors, Chicago Public School students develop technique, creativity, and lifelong learning skills, allowing them to achieve success in school and on the stage.
