WE ALL SPEAK

DANCE S P R I N G

G A L A

F R IDAY, APR IL 25, 20 1 4

I remember reading that gesture most likely preceded language as a form of communication. Even today, in a world filled with words, we recognize joy and sadness merely by the expression on a person’s face. I am a reader. I appreciate the power of words. But if I am in another country, and do not speak the language, I still understand the dance. I think of dance as a universal language. It is possible to speak volumes, without words. There is a reason that humans, all humans, move to music. I suspect both music and dance are “hard-wired.” This is the source of a child’s smile when participating in our Community Engagement programs. This impulse motivates Academy students to perfect their technique and Company dancers to refine their artistry. Perhaps this is the spark for you, as supporters of The Joffrey Ballet, to be a part of our family. Today, we celebrate the power of music and dance.

ASHLEY WHEATER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR After the Rain Choreographer: Christopher Wheeldon / Music: Arvo Pärt January 22, 2005, New York City Ballet New York State Theater, New York, NY World Premiere Ashley Wheater, Dancers: Victoria Jaiani, Fabrice Calmels / Photo by: Temur Suluashvili

OF WHAT DOES DANCE SPEAK? Dance speaks of inclusion. At the heart of the Joffrey’s mission is a commitment to bringing arts education and accessible dance training to all – to present the joy, the beauty and the discipline of dance to our committed and growing audience. Your generosity allows us to touch the lives of thousands of people each year. Thank you for making Chicago a better place to live, work, learn, play and dance.

GREG CAMERON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
