The constant evolution of technology and our resulting reliance on it has always had its pros and cons And when it comes to our education system, we’ve always kept it quite old-fashioned Presentations on Manila Papers are plastered on classroom blackboards, handwritten notes by teachers and students, and physical copies of homework But one pandemic and two school years later, that seemed to all change Canva became every student’s best friend, we exchanged manila papers for aesthetically pleasing PowerPoint presentations, and our handwritten notes and assignments were soon replaced with screenshots and document files. Two years of staying inside the house without communication with the outside world but through technology didn’t help our generation’s dependency on technology But now that things are returning to how they used to be, should the same be done for our education? Should we return to handwritten notes instead of screenshots and Manila Papers instead of Canva presentations? How have these changes affected the students’ performances? Would it be wiser to go back or be more innovative to continue going down our technological path where notebooks have been replaced with iPads?

It’s no secret that technology can do much more than we humans can It could store more information than our brains could ever remember, it contains graphics that an average person could never draw or paint with their own hands, and it has answers to questions most of us couldn’t even try to comprehend, so naturally, with the new software created to attend to students’ needs most of which were created at the height of the pandemic and online classes, we turn to these resources to let technology do what it was designed to do Make our lives easier. With the help of such resources, it forms new ways for students to be engaged in their lessons It also helps students not be limited by what their own hands and skills can produce, especially regarding artistic ability But that’s also not to say that technology usage in the classroom doesn’t have disadvantages The main reason it was discouraged prepandemic was because of the impression that it encouraged students to be lazy And in a couple of different ways, it does Having a computer or phone at your disposal during lessons makes it so that if you didn’t listen, you wouldn’t have too big of a problem, because if the teacher asked you a question or you had to do an activity, all you had to do was search and the answer is right there in front of you Not to mention the distraction they cause, which may be the reason you aren’t able to listen in the first place

It also may not be a 100% even playing field because not everyone can afford a fancy computer or the brand-new iPad with the Apple Pencil and Keyboard or even afford to have data every day to use for online resources and research It speaks to many people’s privilege to even have a phone with a clear camera to take a picture of the board

The usage of technology will always have its pros and cons. And with today’s day and age, using it with things like school and work is inevitable Students shouldn’t rely their whole academic career on Google searches and Brainly But using PowerPoint templates instead of handwritten Manila Paper presentations is much more practical Not to mention how much free online resources save some students money
