How women can make mammograms more comfortable
Mammograms help to detect breast cancer early, improving women’s prognosis as a result. Susan G. Komen states that mammography is the most effective breast cancer screening tool in use today. When women should begin getting mammograms remains open to debate. The American Cancer Society now recommends that women between the ages of 45 and 54 receive annual mammograms. Despite the benefits of mammograms, many women avoid them out of fear of the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. But researchers are examining how much pressure mammogram machines need to apply to get accurate breast images. Until widespread customized mammograms are offered, women can take various steps to reduce the amount of discomfort they feel while undergoing these important screening procedures.
• Apply a topical numbing gel. BreastCancer.org says a study found that applying a numbing gel an hour before having a mammogram resulted in less discomfort when compared to placebo and other painreduction techniques. Be sure to discuss application of the gel with your physician prior to your procedure. • Schedule your procedure for the right time. Do not schedule a mammogram right before or during a menstrual cycle, when breasts already are very tender due to hormonal changes. Waiting until seven to 14 days after a period is a better bet. • Take pain relief pills. A physician may suggest taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen prior to the appointment to reduce discomfort before and after the procedure. • Speak with the technician. Relieve stress: Gifts that pamper and rejuvenate Stress can be bad for the body, contributing to depression, anxiety, hypertension, and even obesity. Unfortunately, more than half of working adults and 47 percent of all Americans say they are concerned with the amount of stress in their lives, according to a survey from the American Psychological Association. Canadians, too, are feeling stressed. The North American research company Ipsos found that stress affects 76 percent of the Canadian population. Reducing stress can be especially important during the holiday season, which, thanks in part to its hectic nature, tends to produce extra feelings of stress. Gifts that pamper, relax and rejuvenate might be the ideal fit for those who need a little rest and relaxation. • Aromatherapy: Studies have shown that aromatherapy, or breathing in certain scents, can trigger reactions in the brain and affect emotions, mood and memory. Specific essential oils can help relieve stress, induce relaxation and even promote better sleep. A plush robe that is luxurious and comfortable will help that someone special unwind after a long day or after sleeping in on the weekend. • Home aquarium: Stress can melt away watching underwater life flick and flitter through the aquarium. Combined with soothing bubbles and the gentle hum and splash of the filter, it is easy to see how having a fish tank in the home can alleviate stress. Make sure the gift recipient is able to care for the fish and select low-maintenance species. • Bed linens: Treat someone special to the gift of added relaxation in the bedroom. Buying bed linens is often a chore and an expense that people put off. Pima cotton, silk, satin, or sateen sheets can be cool, comfortable and soothing. • Facial treatment: A massage session can be relaxing, but so can a facial. There’s something serene about having a professional apply products and rub areas of the face and temples. Stress will slip away in an instant.

Common causes of cancer that people can control
A cancer diagnosis can be shocking. After receiving such news, many people are filled with questions such as, “How did I get this disease?” That question often has no definitive answer, though physicians may be able to work with patients to determine the various factors that contributed to their cancer diagnosis. Cancer does not discriminate. People from all walks of life are diagnosed with cancer every day. Certain contributors, such as family history of cancer, may be beyond a person’s control. But the American Cancer Society notes that people can avoid some potential cancer contributors by making healthy choices.
Tobacco Anti-smoking campaigns have done much to impact the number of people who smoke, but tobacco remains one of the leading causes of cancer across
Metro Creative Services
Alcohol is one potential contributor to cancer that men and women can control. the globe. The ACS notes that while cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco are made from dried tobacco leaves, in order
to make smoking more flavorful and pleasant, tobacco companies add various substances. As the resulting products burn, the smoke they produce is made up of thousands of chemicals, at least 70 of which are carcinogens. Some smokers may not give the smoke coming from their cigarettes much thought, but that smoke contains chemicals such as formaldehyde, lead, arsenic, and carbon monoxide. Recognizing that the smoke from their cigarettes is sending formaldehyde into their air may lead some smokers to quit for good. Alcohol Alcohol consumption can raise a person’s risk of getting cancer. Alcohol has been linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, and breast, among others. The ACS notes that regular, heavy alcohol use can damage the liver and cause inflammation and scarring that might increase a person’s risk of developing liver cancer. Women who consume a few alcoholic beverages may be increasing their risk of developing breast cancer, which the ACS believes might be a byproduct of alco-
hol’s affect on estrogen levels in the body. Evidence suggests that the ethanol found in alcohol is what increases a person’s risk of developing cancer. All alcohol beverages contain ethanol, so drinkers should not assume that one type of alcohol is safer than another. Diet and sedentary lifestyle According to the ACS, research has shown that poor diet coupled with a sedentary lifestyle can increase a person’s risk of getting cancer. In fact, the World Cancer Research Fund estimates that roughly 20 percent of all cancer diagnoses in the United States are related to body fatness, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition. Men and women who can control their weight and maintain a healthy weight throughout their lives can reduce their risk of getting cancer as well as other conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. Anyone can be diagnosed with cancer. But men and women who make healthy choices can greatly reduce their risk of getting this deadly disease.

Family, friends, doctors and support groups can help cancer patients cope with their disease.
Build a cancer support team
Approximately 39.6 percent of men and women in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes, says the National Cancer Institute. The Canadian Cancer Society states that almost half of all Canadians will develop cancer. A cancer support team can help men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer fight their disease and handle its side effects. Supportive family, friends and medical professionals can help many people cope with the emotional and physical effects of cancer.
Counselors/therapists The support of a mental health professional can help cancer patients cope with the psychological impact that their disease can have. Some therapists are specially trained to treat those diagnosed with cancer. Doctors may recommend that their patients seek help with managing the emotions that can arise after a cancer diagnosis, such as depression, anxiety and confusion.
Oncology social workers Certain counselors help individuals better understand their health care system and options concerning treatment. Questions regarding how to pay for care and if insurance can cover it can be a major source of stress for those with long-term illnesses like cancer. These specialty social workers can help patients navigate the system and learn what to expect. Support groups Groups offer support in vari-
ous ways. Simply knowing there are others out there in similar situations can help individuals feel as though they are not alone in their fight against cancer. Support groups can be as formal or informal as patients prefer. Such groups may simply be a group of friends who gather regularly to chat. However, there are some organizations designed specifically to provide support for cancer patients. Peer-led groups are facilitated by group members. Professionally-led groups are typically overseen by a trained medical professional. Groups may meet in person or be available through online social networks. Some support groups may be designed for specific people, including the relatives of people with cancer, spouses, people of certain age groups, and any combination thereof.
At Jefferson Urgent Care, our patients are given the attention they need no matter what time they arrive. Our mission is to provide them with personalized care when they need it the most. We’re prepared to deal with most minor illnesses and injuries you and your family may encounter. We make time for our patients. And we respond with the care they deserve ... as if they were our own family.
Medical staff Qualified and compassionate oncologists, nutritionists, physical therapists, nurses, and others can make cancer treatment a little easier to swallow. Find staff who are professional and knowledgeable, but also empathetic. Friends and family Of course no cancer support team would be complete without close friends and family members. These are the people who cancer patients must rely on to accompany them to appointments, run errands and offer comfort when needed. The fight against cancer is never easy, but the right support team can alleviate some of the stressors and burdens.

Gifting vibrant skin: How to navigate popular spa treatments
The desire for healthy, cleanlooking skin drives the multibillion dollar cosmetics and skincare industry. According to data from the Semi-Annual Consumer Insight Snapshot from DermStore, a leading skin care ecommerce website, 67 percent of consumers surveyed are very or extremely interested in trying products for their specific skin concerns. The top five skin concerns across the United States include aging, uneven skin tone, sensitive skin, dark circles, and sun damage. To address concerns about their skin, consumers are increasingly turning to in-spa services, such as facials, peels and fillers. A facial or body skin treatment can be a coveted gift this holiday season. However, navigating spa jargon can be tricky. Here are some popular services and what they entail.
Traditional facial A traditional facial typically begins with a cleansing of the
face using steam to open up pores. This lets impurities clear out. Depending on an individual’s skin type or concerns, a mild scrub may be used to exfoliate dead skin cells, dirt and oils. A hydrating mask or lotion will be applied to soothe skin after treatment. Chemical or fruit acid peel Chemical and fruit acid peels rely on various acids to exfoliate and peel off the outer layer of skin. The skin beneath is usually more smooth and less wrinkled. Some deep peels target the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery says that peels can be used to treat anything from acne to aging skin to scars. Alpha-hydroxy acid and lactic acid may be used in mild peels. Trichloroacetic acid, or phenol, is used for more potent chemical peels. Peels are best left to an aesthetician or dermatologist.

Facial masks Masks may contain many different ingredients designed to treat various skin problems. A paraffin mask, for example, involves the process of applying molten warm wax over a thin mask. The wax will open pores and moisturize the skin. Masks are applied, and then there is a waiting period, during which the mask dries or penetrates. Then the treatment will be removed. Microdermabrasion In microdermabrasion, layers of dead skin are buffed. This dead skin may have accumulated due to age and sun exposure. Many spas employ a device that scours the skin using micronized aluminum oxide crystals. Similar athome products use motorized spinning brushes that employ bristles to slough off skin cells. Lymphatic massage Many facial treatments also include some massage. With lymphatic massage, particular pressure points are targeted to release

Fighting fatigue after surviving cancer

National Sleep Foundation notes that a 20-minute nap can improve alertness and mood and enhance performance. Men and women who recently completed successful cancer treatments can schedule 20-minute breaks during those times of day when their energy levels tend to drop off. A 20-minute nap might make for a more alert and productive rest of the day. • Ease back in. The DanaFarber Cancer Institute recommends cancer survivors do what they enjoy after treatment, but do less of it. If they are already fatigued, cancer survivors should avoid tiring themselves out, no matter how much they might have missed certain activities while they were sick. Energy levels may gradually improve, and as they do, cancer survivors can adjust their activity schedules. Many cancer survivors are still coping with fatigue even after successful treatments. Allowing time for energy levels to be restored and taking steps to prevent further fatigue can help cancer survivors overcome this often unforeseen hurdle.

Upon being diagnosed with cancer, men and women often understand they’re facing an uphill battle against the disease. But few may know what to expect after successful treatment. While the cancer might be gone, some unfortunate side effects may linger. One such side effect is fatigue. According to the DanaFarber Cancer Institute, some cancer survivors report feeling tired or worn out even after their treatment has ended. Doctors know that fatigue during treatment can be caused by a host of factors, including the therapy itself. But researchers remain uncertain regarding the cause of post-treatment fatigue. Such fatigue can be especially disheartening, as many people who just survived cancer have a renewed vigor for life and don’t want to be affected by feelings of exhaustion. Fighting fatigue after cancer treatment requires the help of a physician. But because no two patients are the same, survivors may need to figure out what works best for them as they look to overcome feelings of fatigue after successful cancer treatments. • Speak with a physician. Physicians might be able to help cancer survivors overcome their post-treatment fatigue by recommending alternatives to medications that might be compromising their energy levels. Doctors may also help patients design diets that can boost their energy levels, while recommending they avoid certain foods that might have the opposite effect. • Monitor energy levels and plan accordingly. Some cancer survivors may notice that their energy levels are high at certain points of the day and low at others. Cancer survivors can monitor these levels and plan their days so they are not especially busy when their energy levels are at their lowest. This can prevent burnout and help survivors avoid the domino effect that low energy levels can have. • Take short naps. The

Six great gifts for home cooks
Many people enjoy preparing homecooked meals for their loved ones. Whether it’s a large family gathering during the holiday season or a weeknight meal for their immediate families, men, women and even children who like to cook enjoy the satisfied looks on their loved ones’ faces after sharing a delicious meal. Come the holiday season, gift givers can put the same satisfied look on the faces of the home cooks in their lives by offering a variety of gifts that can make mealtime easier and/or more enjoyable. 1. Electric corkscrew: Nothing complements a good meal quite like an appropriately paired bottle of wine. Cooks who are too busy in the kitchen to utilize traditional corkscrews, which can be timeconsuming and messy, might enjoy an electric corkscrew. Such corkscrews quickly remove corks from wine bottles, requiring little effort on the part of already busy cooks. 2. Cookbook: People who understand the joy of cooking often love to experiment in the kitchen. Cookbooks can be an ideal gift for such cooks. Choose a book that provides recipes from their favorite styles of cuisine, such as Italian or Indian food. Or find a book that offers an array of recipes that allows them to explore various types of cuisine.

Cooking classes make great gifts for people with a passion for cooking. 3. Cookware: Even the best cookware can only take so much usage, and chances are home cooks’ pantries can afford an upgrade or two. Gift givers should keep in mind that many home cooks have strong preferences regarding their

cookware, so it might be wise to give a gift card or ask a loved one which type of cookware he or she prefers. Of course, a covert inspection of a loved one’s pantry might provide the insight gift givers need as well. 4. Rolling pin: For the person who loves to bake, a rolling pin might make a better gift than noncooks may appreciate. Rolling pins are necessary to prepare many baked goods, and a customizable rolling pin can flatten dough to the exact millimeter, helping bake-happy home cooks prepare the perfect plate of cookies. 5. Cooking class: Cooking classes can make the ideal gift for novice home cooks who are just beginning to explore their love of cooking. But advanced
classes can help more seasoned cooks perfect their craft as they learn to prepare more complex dishes. 6. Wine aerator: Much like electric corkscrews can make opening bottles of wine much easier, wine aerators can help aerate red wine more quickly than decanters, which can take up to two hours to fully aerate wine. Aerators oxidate red wine, softening its flavors and bringing out the aromas that can make a great bottle of wine that much more enjoyable. Home cooks often enjoy preparing fresh meals for their loved ones. The holiday season presents a perfect opportunity to find gifts that make cooking that much more enjoyable for loved ones who can’t wait to whip up the next homecooked meal for family and friends.

Pregnancy possible after breast cancer
More women are diagnosed with breast cancer than any other cancer. For many women, one of the more frightening aspects of a breast cancer diagnosis is the potential impact the disease can have on an area of the body often associated with femininity and motherhood. Cancer.net indicates the five-year survival rate for breast cancer if the cancer is only in one breast is 95 percent. That rate dips to 85 percent if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. Even though this is great news, women may worry about the long-term implications of post-cancer life, particularly how they relate to future pregnancy plans. Early detection and improvements in treatment have markedly decreased the numbers of breast cancer-related fatalities. However, the therapies used to treat breast cancer can affect fertility and a woman’s ability to have a successful pregnancy. While pregnancy after cancer treatment is often safe for both the baby and mother, women should still educate themselves about the potential effects of breast cancer treatment with regard to pregnancy. Infertility risks and preserving fertility One of the main concerns women have
after surviving a breast cancer diagnosis is the risk of infertility. Susan G. Komen says both chemotherapy and hormone therapy can impact fertility and decrease the window of time a woman has to have children. This is a particular concern for young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Chemotherapy can damage the ovaries, while tamoxifen, a commonly used hormone therapy, can cause irregular periods or stop the menstrual cycle altogether. Both of these treatments also may bring on natural menopause earlier than usual, according to the International Breast Cancer Study Group. Young women can opt to have their unfertilized eggs or embryos frozen and stored prior to starting cancer treatment. It’s important to meet with a fertility specialist early on to discuss options. Waiting game According to the American Cancer Society, some doctors advise breast cancer survivors to wait at least two years after finishing treatment before they try to get pregnant. No research yet indicates that getting pregnant will make women more susceptible to the cancer coming back, nor will pregnancy increase the risks of birth defects or other

Breastfeeding after cancer Depending on the type of breast cancer treatment they receive, many women are still able to breastfeed. However, if radiation or surgery has affected breast health, milk production may be affected and the baby may have difficulty latching on. Using a breast pump to express milk may be an option. However, commercially produced infant formulas also can provide the nutrition growing babies need.

4 ways professionals can improve their resumes
Changing jobs can be a difficult decision to make, especially later in one’s career. In many ways, landing a new job is more challenging than ever thanks to the technology-driven society in which people live. Information is shared faster than ever, and applying for jobs isn’t the same as it might have been as recently as a decade ago. One thing that has evolved is the resume. Although creating a powerful resume has always been a challenge, writing — or modifying one — for today’s digital world requires some insider tips. Adapting a resume as one ages and has gained experience can be advantageous. A wellcrafted resume is one way for professionals to demonstrate how their skill set is current and adaptable to today’s business climate. The following tips can help improve a resume when the time comes to move on to a new job.
1. Focus on your accomplishments Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the resume around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a resume to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.
Metro Creative Services
Job applicants of all ages need to customize their resumes to reflect the preferences of today’s recruiters. 2. Aim for the future Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. All of the skills mentioned should be relevant to your career objective and not just added to pad the resume. Therefore, unless your brief stint waiting tables exemplifies how you developed customer service skills, eliminate it.
words for the industry. 3. Choose the right keywords It’s important to optimize a resume for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your resume will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz
4. Set yourself apart Engage in activities that can improve your marketability. Be sure to list training, coursework, degree, or volunteer efforts that pertain directly to the skills needed for the job to which you’re applying. These additions can tip the scales in your favor over another applicant. Resumes continue to evolve, and it is crucial for applicants — especially established workers — to familiarize themselves with the changes and market themselves accordingly.

How young women can land the right internship
Internships provide great opportunities for young women to get their professional feet wet. While classroom lessons provide theoretical senses of what a profession might be like, an internship gives an actual sense, shedding light on how a particular business or industry operates. In its Class of 2015 Student Survey, the National Association of Colleges and Employers found that women (65.8 percent) were slightly more likely to have had an internship than men (64.6 percent). Competition for internships can be steep, and young women who want to set themselves apart from the field can employ various strategies as they search for internships. • Learn the recruiting schedule. Some professions may recruit interns year-round, while others may only look for interns during particular times of the year. Speak with your academic

limiting yourself to only those opportunities may be prohibitive, and you may end up with nothing. Maintain an open mind when pursuing internships. Even if you don’t land your dream internship, another opportunity may provide lots of hands-on experience while also allowing you to get your foot in the door. • Tell the truth. Embellishing your resume might help you get an interview, but chances are the interviewer will learn pretty quickly if your purported skills are authentic. Internship programs are designed for students with little or no experience who might one day turn into valued employees. If a company suspects an internship candidate of embellishing her skills and experience now, that candidate might never get her foot back in the door. Tell the truth and express your excitement at any opportunity that allows you to apply classroom lessons in real world settings.

How busy moms can make mealtime easier
Working mothers make up a sizable portion of the modern workforce. According to the United States Department of Labor, as of 2015 69.9 percent of mothers with children under the age of 18 were in the labor force. Things are similar in Canada, where Statistics Canada reports single-earner families made up just 27 percent of all couple families with children in 2014, a figure that was 59 percent in 1976. While more and more mothers are returning to work after the birth of their children, that does not mean their responsibilities at home are falling by the wayside. Time-strapped working moms tasked with preparing family meals can embrace some time-saving strategies to make mealtime a little less hectic.
Save time during prep Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner, preparing meals for a family can be time-consuming. When making dinner, keep a plastic shopping bag or bowl on the counter where you can discard scraps such as the skin from onions, fat from chicken and other items that will ultimately end up in the garbage. Discarding all the items into one bag rather than walking back and forth from the garbage to your work area can save time during meal prep.
Slow things down Another way to save time at mealtime is to use a slow cooker so meals are cooking during the day while you are at work. Chop vegetables on weekend afternoons or nights and separate ingredients into Ziploc bags or containers so all of the prep work is done ahead of time. Each morning you can simply unload the bags or containers into the slow cooker, turn it on before leaving for work and then the meal will be ready to eat by the time you and your family arrive home at night. Shop online Many people associate online shopping with clothing and

Many grocery stores now offer online shopping and pickup services that allow shoppers to fill up their grocery carts before stepping foot in the store. Simply place your order online and arrange a pickup time and everything will be ready for you when you arrive at the store.
This can save you the effort and time spent navigating today’s increasingly large and busy grocery stores. Strategies to create a better work-life balance
Parents with responsibilities at work and at home commonly struggle to find balance between these two often conflicting sets of obligations. Surveys have indicated that working professionals who work less are more likely to be happy with their work-life balance than those who burn the midnight oil at work, but for many adults, working less is not always an option. A 2012 report from New Zealand’s Ministry of Social Development found that the percentage of working professionals who were very satisfied or satisfied with their work-life balance declined as their hours worked increased. Canada’s General Social Survey discovered similar results, noting that, while the majority of working parents were satisfied with their work-life balance, those who were not most frequently cited their dissatisfaction at not having enough time for family life as the main culprit behind their discontent. Creating a better work-life balance is an ongoing commitment, and even working parents who employ the following strategies may find they need to periodically tweak their routines so they can fulfill their obligations at home and at the office. • Schedule family time. Since working professionals unhappy with their work-life balance often cite lack of family time as the reason for that dissatisfaction, finding time for family may be the key to changing that outlook. Schedule time for family just as you schedule the rest of your daily commitments. Listing family dinners or activities in your daily schedule will ensure you don’t mistakenly schedule other activities during family time. • Employ technology where possible. Some working parents may feel as though technology has made it harder than ever to leave work at the office. But while smartphones, tablets and other devices may mean you’re never too far away from work, technology also can be used to

create more time with loved ones. Employ an app such as FaceTime to eat lunch with your spouse or chat with your children each day. Such interactions may not be as enjoyable as faceto-face interactions, but building them into your day can help you stay in touch with family and provide a welcome respite from busy workdays. • Use your vacation days. A recent study from Project: Time Off, a national movement aimed at highlighting the important role that time off from work can play in the lives of professionals, 55 percent of Americans did not use their full allotment of vacation days in 2015. That translated to 658 million unused vacation days, 222 million of which could not be carried over into 2016. Professionals who want to create a better work-life balance can examine their vacation day usage and resolve to use them all if they are not already. Parents can use vacation days on national holidays when schools are closed so they can squeeze in family time even when they are not going on trips.

How to transition back to work smoothly after maternity leave
The average length of maternity leave varies depending on geography, but the vast majority of new mothers take time away from work upon giving birth. Maternity leave affords women the opportunity to connect with and provide for their babies, while hopefully giving new mothers some time to recover from childbirth as well. When maternity leave ends, the transition back to work can be difficult. New mothers often struggle when the time comes to leave their babies at daycare, with a nanny or with a relative. Adding to that emotional difficulty, women also face the task of diving back into their careers and all the responsibilities that come with those careers. While returning to work after maternity leave can be difficult, the following tips might help women make the transition go more smoothly. • Give yourself a grace period. Even if you’re accustomed to going full bore at the office, the first days or even weeks after returning from maternity leave will be anything but ordinary. Give yourself a grace period upon returning to work, gradually easing back in rather than expecting to dive right in with both feet on your first day back. Not taking on too much too quickly can help you adjust to your new reality and give you time to cope with any emotions you might be feeling about leaving your child with a caregiver. • Arrange to work remotely one or two days per week. Another way to reduce the likelihood of being overwhelmed upon returning from maternity leave is to attempt to work remotely one or two days per week. Speak with your employer about making such an arrangement permanent or temporary, explaining how even working from home just a single day per week might help you calm your nerves about dropping a child off with a caregiver. Thanks to the cost savings and advancements in technology, many employers are now more amenable to allowing staffers to work remotely. But new moms won’t know their employers’ point of

What are the common causes of sensitive skin?
“Sensitive skin” can describe a host of symptoms that affect the skin on peoples’ faces and bodies. Some may develop sensitive skin after using skin care products that contribute to irritation or make their skin feel uncomfortable, even if there is no outward appearance of change. According to Francesca Fusco, MD, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, more than 50 percent of women categorize themselves as having sensitive skin. Although there are many treatments designed to treat sensitive skin, what drives irritation in one person may not produce the same effects in another. Therefore, alleviating sensitivity is not always an easy fix. Getting to the root of the irritation can help people develop a more customized plan for relief. Indoor and outdoor environment Changes in the weather as well as the air inside of a home can cause reactions in the skin. For example, cool, dry air and central heating can cause the skin to become dehydrated. Dirt and pollution also may play a role. Pollution in the air can be absorbed by the skin’s natural barrier, eventually weakening it, say the sensitive skin experts at Simple skin care products. Age Skin can lose its elasticity and ability to recover quickly with age, making it prone to greater sensitivity. Couple that with the public’s quest for

younger-looking skin that involves cleansing religiously, exfoliating too frequently and relying on a bevy of anti-aging lotions, and it’s understandable why skin may become less resilient over time. Dry skin Lack of moisture can contribute to sensitive skin. A cleanser that is too drying is often the culprit behind unnecessary irritation. According to skin care expert Ren-e Rouleau, harsh detergents in commonly used facial cleansers can break down the natural lipids in skin. Furthermore, invisible cracks may form, enabling moisture to seep out and irritants to get in. Skin disorders Common skin disorders or allergic skin reactions may make skin more sensitive. Such conditions include rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, or allergic contact dermatitis. Injured skin may be more reactive to the environment and certain products as well. Allergies to food or environmental components may also make skin more sensitive. Patch testing can identify allergies. Some trial and error may be necessary to find a skin care regimen that works on sensitive skin. Endless laundry? Try going commercial
Does the idea of doing laundry make you want to throw in the towel? Unfortunately that would only contribute to more laundry! According to the information and statistics website Quora, in a typical year, an average family can do upwards of 250 loads of laundry. Even with advancements in laundry technology, it can take more than two hours to wash, dry and fold a single load of clothing. For active men and women and those with large families, laundry piles may seem ever-present. Rather than gathering up all of the clothing and linens and heading to the nearest laundromat, homeowners can bring the laundromat to their homes. Investing in commercial laundry equipment might be the best way for homeowners to solve their laundry woes. A few distinct differences set residential and commercial washers and dryers apart. Residential equipment tends to be small and can easily fit into homes and handle the demands of family laundry. Commercial machines, however, are designed for large loads. This includes bulky comforters or throw rugs. Individuals who are doing many loads per day may find that commercial washers are more practical, as they are designed to stand up to the demands of daily use. Furthermore, commercial machines tend to wash and dry heavy items more thoroughly and more quickly than residential machines. Because commercial equipment can handle larger loads than residential machines, the potential for energy savings can make commercial machines worth the extra investment. For example a typical home dryer can take an hour to dry a large load on high heat, while it may take only half that time to dry the same load in a commercial dryer. Another factor to consider is that commercial washers and dryers are designed to be serv-

Even though the initial cost of commercial machines may be higher than residential units, homeowners may break even or even save money if they don’t need to replace the machine as early as they might with a residential unit. Although there are many ben-
efits to upgrading to commercial laundry equipment, B&C Technologies, an industry leader in commercial and industrial laundry equipment, advises homeowners to consider various factors before making their decision. Homes may need to be outfitted to accommodate commercial units. This includes
larger water lines for adequate water supply, larger drains, upgraded electrical power, and a natural gas supply for the dryer. A new exhaust vent may need to be installed to accommodate the greater amount of expelled air. Naturally, the space needed to house commercial units also merits consideration.

How to find time in a busy schedule for fitness
Many adults admit to having little or no time to exercise, and statistics support the notion that men and women simply aren’t exercising enough. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, only 21 percent of adults ages 18 and older met the physical activity guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity (Note: The World Health Organization recommends that healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 64 should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week, while also performing muscle-strengthening activities involving the major muscle groups at least two days per week.) Commitments to work and family can make it hard to find time to visit the gym or exercise at home. But the benefits of regular exercise are so substantial that even the busiest adults should make concerted efforts to find time to exercise. The following are a handful of ways to do just that. • Embrace multitasking. Many professionals are adept at mult-tasking in the office, and those same skills can be applied when trying to find time for exercise. Instead of plopping down on the couch to watch television, bring a tablet to the gym or the basement and stream a favorite show while on the treadmill or the elliptical. When

A 2016 report from The Nielsen Company revealed that the average adult in the United States spent more than 10 hours each day consuming media. That includes time spent using smartphones, tablets, personal computers, and other devices. By reducing that screen time by just one hour per day, adults can create enough free time to meet the WHO-recommended exercise requirements.
Compassionate Care in the Comfort of Home.
• Make it a group effort. Involving others can make it easier for adults to find time to exercise. Instead of hosting work meetings in a conference room, take the meeting outside, walking around the office complex while discussing projects rather than sitting stationary around a conference table. At home, take the family along to the gym or go for nightly postdinner walks around the neighborhood instead of retiring to the living room to watch television. • Redefine date night. Adults
who can’t find time for exercise during the week can redefine date night with their significant others. Instead of patronizing a local restaurant on Friday or Saturday night, enroll in a fitness class together. Parents can still hire babysitters to look after their youngsters while they go burn calories instead of packing them on at local eateries. Finding time to exercise can be difficult for busy adults. But those committed to getting healthier can find ways to do so even when their schedules are booked.

Author, mom offers 5 tips to get dinner on the table
The challenge working parents face in maintaining work-life balance is often compared to a juggling act. Finding time together, especially on weeknights when family schedules tend to be hectic, is no small task. But finding time together, particularly at the dinner table, can pay a host of dividends. According to the Family Dinner Project, studies have linked regular family dinners with higher grade-point averages and self-esteem in children, as well as lower rates of obesity and eating disorders in both children and adolescents. Cook, writer, activist and mother of two Katie Workman knows full well how difficult it can be to make nightly dinners together part of a family’s routine. But Workman, whose latest book, “Dinner Solved!” (Workman Publishing), provides 100 family-friendly recipes and variations to ensure that everyone at the table is happy, relishes the opportunity to help others make family dinners a fun part of their nightly routines. “Many of us put so much pressure on ourselves when it comes to family meals,” says Workman. “But when we ease up on that pressure, dinner actually seems to happen more often, and the meals are a lot more fun.” To help even the busiest moms and dads find time for family dinners, Workman offers the following tips so parents can produce weeknight meals the whole family can enjoy.
1. Less is more Don’t make yourself crazy trying to master a recipe with an endless ingredient list on a Wednesday night. Weeknight meals don’t have to be perfect or exotic. Even the simplest recipes can make for delicious meals.
2. Change it up Skip those time-consuming, last-minute trips to the grocery store for missing ingredients by replacing them with something similar that you already have on hand.
3. Elevate your meal from simple to sophisticated Pairing weeknight meals with the perfect wine can elevate midweek meatballs to something more memorable. Versatile and budget-friendly, Greystone Cellars® wines are approachable and easy to drink. Since 1995, Markham Vineyards has been producing a small amount of Greystone Cellars wines exclusively for the Culinary Institute of America, which receives a portion of the proceeds for each Greystone Cellars bottle sold. Get a head start on prep work Whenever possible, reduce the stress of weeknight meals by doing some of your meal prep long before dinnertime. Chop
veggies for the week on Sunday nights or take a few minutes each morning to gather ingredients for that night’s meal. 5. Strength training important to women’s health
Women’s bodies are built different from men’s to accommodate the changes of pregnancy and childbirth. Although women may store fat differently and have less muscle mass than men, it’s still important that women include weight resistance training in their exercise routines. Lifting weights is an important part of staying fit. Yet many women do not pick up weights out of fear of bulking up and gaining weight. In a 2011 opinion poll conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 20 percent of women said they accomplished the CDC’s recommended 2.5 hours of aerobic exercise and two periods of strength training each week. Contrary to popular belief, women who weight train will not turn into the bulking behemoths of competitive weight lifting. The Women’s Heart Foundation says that high levels of estrogen make
it quite difficult for women to become overly muscular. When they strength train, rather, women’s muscles will improve in tone, endurance and strength instead of size. Resistance training provides an efficient way to build strength and burn calories. A study from researchers at the University of New Mexico found that the body will take between 15 minutes and 48 hours after exercise to return to a resting state. That means that a person continues to burn calories after exercising, a phenomenon known as “after-burn” or “excess post-exercise oxygen consumption.” The more intense the workout, the longer the after-burn may last. Studies performed at the Quincy, Mass., South Shore YMCA found that the average woman who strength trains two to three times a week for two months will gain nearly two pounds of muscle, but lose 3.5

pounds of fat. With that lean muscle addition, resting metabolism increases and more calories can be burned each day. The following are some additional benefits of strength training. • Reduces risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol. • Builds stronger muscles and connective tissues that can increase joint stability. • Improves the way the body processes sugar, which can help reduce the risk of diabetes. • Reduces rates of depression. A Harvard University study found that 10 weeks of strength training reduced clinical depression symptoms more successfully than standard counseling. Women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable. Women with no strength training experience can consult with a personal trainer who can teach them proper strength training
