BADUY TRIBE Where Technology Doesn’t Count text & photos : Firsta Yunida

Little more than three hours away from Jakarta there is a traditional community that has turned their back away from modern technology. They don’t own phones, use the Internet, wear shoes or listen to the radio. Living in voluntary isolation they are a secretive group who turn away outsiders. This group lives close to the city of Banten and they are known as the Baduy people.

8

THE JOURNEY APR 2014

THE JOURNEY APR 2014

Generally, the Baduy are divided into two groups; the Baduy Dalam and the Baduy Luar. In my opinion the Baduy Luar act as a buffer zone to stop visitors from entering the Sacred Inner circle, the Baduy Dalam. Even though both groups are barefoot, it is so easy to differentiate them. Baduy Dalam wear white and black cloth as clothing (all their clothes are handmade), meanwhile Baduy Luar wear black and cloth just like us. Some people say that the black cloth the Baduy Luar people wear is an indication that 10

THE JOURNEY APR 2014

they are not pure anymore, that they are ‘breaking some rules’ of the community, such as their willingness to accept modern influence into their daily lives. This community, is quite famous as a weekend gateway for people who live in Jakarta, but it is not for them who want beaches, sea and loads of holiday snapshots. The Baduy Dalam people think that taking photos is taboo and have nothing to do with modern technology. It used to be prohibited for visitors to stay overnight in Baduy Dalam, but nowadays

it is possible, as long as you get someone from Baduy Luar who can recommend you to one of the people from Baduy Dalam that is! When you want to visit this area, make sure to wear proper trekking shoes or sandals since the track to Baduy Dalam is more around 10 km and is not an easy walk, especially during the rainy season. Don’t worry about the long walk though, you will be spoiled by the amazing views. The rich nature surrounding the Baduy settlement means that the Baduy people

are able to fulfill their daily needs and make their own clothes. They also sell some handicrafts that they make as well, like scarves, bracelets and fabrics for visitors. They also sell food, like locally produced honey. If you’re thinking about what to do when you come here then you need not worry because there is lots on offer, like just simply enjoying the true relaxing times and the feeling of being isolated from modern technology and man made things. My favourite things to do is just observing communal life in the settlement. It is a very relaxing experience and sometimes I find myself missing the simplicity and beauty of the place. ature is not just the only thing that brought the world attention to Bali, aside from the countless natural beauties Bali is rich with it’s culture and dances are one of Bali most famous culture. There are numerous kinds of Balinese dances, but one dance truly represents Bali, it is the Pendet Dance. A single of images of Pendet dance could tell the whole story of Bali that is how strong the dance influence in Bali. Originally performed during temple purification ceremony, Pendet dance performed by young girls, carrying bowls of flower petals, handfuls of which are cast into the air at various times in the dance. Performed by 4-5 young girls (before their puberty) in temple yards. All dancers carry in their right hand a small offering of incense, cakes, water vessels, or flower formations. With these they dance from shrine to shrine within the temple. the flowers later spreaded around the temple. This dance is a symbol of welcoming God in some ritual ceremonies in Bali. Pendet has undergone later development with variations and now is not only performed in ritual ceremonies but also in some social events. Pendet since has been known as a welcoming dance.

arantuka is one of the pilgrimages for Catholics in Indonesia, which is located in East Flores and is also known by the name of the Reinha City (Portuguese), means the Queen City or Town of Maria. Especially in celebration of Easter week, the city will be flooded with pilgrims from all over the archipelago. As city of pilgrimage, Larantuka is nearly the same to Fatima in Portugal and Lourdes in France. Just like those two cities, the one who was appointed as a magnet icon shrine is Mother Maria. And to commemorate the apparition of Our Lady in Larantuka about 500 years ago, held a ceremony Semana Santa every year. Until now, the belief in the visions and the core remained ceremony Semana Santa. The scenery along the road between Maumere to Larantuka is like a panorama that often adorns calendars or postcards. it was so beautiful. On the left, there is a stretch of sea and mountains on the right side. One called Ili Egon (1710m) and Ili Wukoh (1450m) which stands proudly. It was no exaggeration when I say that the route-by-route Maumere - Larantuka and vice versa is a journey with a beautiful panorama. After more than 4 hours sitting in a car seat that took me out of the town of Maumere towards Larantuka, finally a golden statue of Mary holding Jesus being wounded seem poised on the crossroads junction. The statue is as if to say “Welcome to the City of Larantuka” The ritual of Semana Santa occurs for a week, going on towards death of Jesus on the cross, until the feast of the Passover or the rise of Jesus Christ. This year the Semana Santa ritual is starting from April 14th – April 20th 2014, and the top event is on April 18th 2014 (black friday). The next morning I was rushing to Tuan Ma Chapel (Mother Mary) which is located not far from the Port Larantuka, tiny chapel with a mountain backdrop of Ili Mandiri

(1510m) and the front page is clean, calm sea. Hundreds people entering the altar, kneeling while praying with rosary in hand. In addition to the visible altar yields offered by the congregation, consisting of maize, rice, cassava, and various fruits. An atmosphere full of wisdom was really strong. What was left was only peaceful feeling in heart. Exactly at noon, the sea procession was started. Parade of wooden boats and canoes with a black flag were heading to the port just across the Tuan Ma Chapel. It was like a regular mass but on the ship, the congregation on the ship endlessly glorifying and exalting the name of God. Interspersed with the Lord’s Prayer and the Prayer of Mary. The congregation wore black mourning clothes and white clothes for officers who 16

carry the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. The congregation that stands along the edge of the road paying tribute with the words of hope that miracle such as healing and recovery may occur. During the day, from Tuan Ma Chapel, procession statues of the Virgin Mary (Tuan Ma in the language Nagi) who picked up a statue of Jesus Christ (Tuan Ana) to jointly marched towards the cathedral Larantuka. Afternoon and evening, after the Good Friday Mass and memorial cross, began the procession from the Cathedral sculpture Larantuka Tuan Ma Ana and surrounding cities Larantuka, through the lives of eight stopover point (Armida).

Thousands of candles along the procession route and at the hands of the pilgrims make Larantuka as a holy, mourning city. This religious procession with a strong Portuguese style placed Jesus as the center of ritual, as well as putting the Virgin Mary as a mourning mother (Mater Dolorosa) from witnessing the suffering of Jesus, his son, before and during the crucifixion on Mount Calvary.

very traveler’s dream of a perfect tropical paradise holiday, but usually what is depicted on a brochure, poster or any other kind of promotional media is not what you get. Don’t get it wrong; you do end up getting tanned on a nice beach, but the whole packages is far from the meaning of “Paradise”, the moment you turn back from the exotic beach you’ll need up in something pretty much you seen everyday crowd, traffic, all the hustle and bustle the very same thing you’ve been trying to escape by taking a holiday trip. There is one place that truly worthy for the title of “Tropical paradise” and it can be found in Lombok. But not the overcrowdedpopular Gilis , which had become the miniTHE JOURNEY APR 2014

version of Kuta, Bali. With all the villas, spas, cafes or nightclubs. It is their less popular brothers on the eastern shore of Lombok, The Gili Kondo and co, East Lombok. With Gili Kondo as the biggest and other two smaller island Gili Bidara and Petagan. They are located on the eastern shore of Lombok island, about two hours trip from Senggigi or Mataram. You will need to take a boat from the Labuan Lombok harbor to reach this little paradise; it took about 45 minutes of crossing. The other two is also nice to visit but most of activities and facilities can be found in Gili Kondo. Beautiful clean white sand stretch around this 20-acres (8 hectare) island a perfect matrass for your dream sunbath, turquoise 20

blue water with breathtaking underwater views with colorful coral reefs and beautiful underwater marine life can be seen even from the surface, magnificent scenery surrounding it. Face west and you will be served with a majestic view of the rooftop of Lombok, Mount Rinjani, face east and view the dazzling scenery of Sumbawa Island and on top of all it’s absolutely away from all the hustle and bustle. A bright blue sky and warm sun will add as a cherry on the top to this perfect tropical paradise. Facilities on this island also keep as natural as possible; no permanent building is built here. Several exotic bamboo cottages can be rented if you are intend to spend a night or two, with nice clean water and meals also served at the restaurant. It may be just a small island in the middle of the ocean but

this is land is greener the main land, shady trees planted by all over the island. Another interesting thing to see is a barrier island that can be found near Gili Kondo. This tiny sand island will make you realize how its feel being cast away also a very nice place to take some memorable pictures. Gili Kondo was once a deserted island, only used by the local fisherman to make stop to repair the boats before continuing their trip. But then by the late 1970s Perama Tour a travel company, with their komodo trip program which starts from Lombok Island began to make Gili kondo as a part of the trip program and together with the

local people and the regency administration start to develop the island. With the concept of sustainable tourism, programs such as preventing the illegal coral bombing, tree planting, and coral reforestation which is done by the visitors, all to ensure that Gili Kondo becoming the true Tropical Paradise. Dewi Supartini ;a travel enthusiast, had been traveling since child with her family. She also working in one of travel agency in Bali. THE JOURNEY APR 2014
