Mount BROMO Revealing the Most Dramatical Landscape in Indonesia text & photos : Firsta Yunida

THE JOURNEY MAY 2014

B

romo has long been a tourism hotspot. After twice visiting this place I can understand why; honestly, I still can’t get enough of it. Until now, I still think that the area around Bromo has one of the most amazing landscapes in the whole of Indonesia. The volcano is located in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java. Let me share with you why I am looking forward to visit Bromo again in the near future. Probably, after Bali, Bromo is the top touristy place in Indonesia. Seeing sunrise at Penanjakan is the

THE JOURNEY MAY 2014

best way to start your journey of Bromo. Sunrise here is simply breathtaking (unless you are unlucky and get foggy skies). In fact, it is so breathtaking that you can hardly move for the amount of people packing the viewpoint. Unfortunately, this is something that I din’t really like so much about Bromo, because some people just don’t understand how to enjoy a sunrise. My advise is try to go on the weekdays and avoid the mass crowds. After sunrise, you can continue to explore Bromo by going to the crater. Don’t forget to make stop at the Tengger Sand Sea and the Savanna. You can experience 10

THE JOURNEY MAY 2014

the contrast between the dry and sandy area with the green and fresh savanna of Bromo. It is unbelievably beautiful. The walk to the top of the crater also rewards you with a fantastic view. It is an easy climb if you are reasonably fit, or you can go horse riding instead if you want to. The people that live around this region are called Tenggerese (Tengger tribe). The name comes from the Majapahit Kingdom (the powerful Hindu kingdom around 13th century), which was centred on this region, though you can also find Tenggerese in some areas around East Java. One of the reasons I really like Bromo

is because it is a place that uses tourism to empower the local community. The locals take good care of Bromo and understand that this is something that they really need to preserve, but also want to share with tourists. Since you can walk to the volcanoes, or take a jeep or scooter, there are so many chance to meet up and have a conversation with locals. The jeep drivers, the small stores owners, the ojek (motorbike taxi drivers), and many more are mostly locals. Leaving the jeep at 4 am I was so cold that I started shivering as soon as I left the car. Straight away I remember a middle age woman coming up to me and trying her level best to sell something to me. I still find myself smiling when I remember her. Even though it was so cold, she was so friendly and she started a conversation with me straight away. She was telling me that the weather was going to be really cold, which I already realised. She offered me a lot of stuff, starting with warm gloves, different hats, scarfs, etc. She was telling me I should buy it to keep me warm and then afterwards I

could give it away to my family and friends as a souvenir from Bromo. I found it so funny how she was being so creative trying to sell me things, while also telling me about her life. I didn’t buy anything from her in the end, because I had everything that she offered to me, but I am sure that we were warming up ourselves with laughter from our conversation. Have I given you enough reasons to visit Bromo in the future? Yes? Last piece of advice then, don’t forget to dress warmly and put plenty of layers on. You will need them if you want to enjoy the most dramatic landscape and culture in Indonesia, especially for the sunrise!

eautiful beach is not the only thing Bali has, the rice terrace is also one of the interesting sight and Ubud had of the best rice terrace in the island. Ubud is well known for its laid-back, village lifestyle and luscious greenery. Its hot and humid climate with abundant rainfall and fertile soil makes it suitable for planting rice - the staple food of the people of Bali. Due to its unique landscape of uneven land and steep ravines, the paddy farmers of Ubud has strategically utilise the terrain and plant rice paddies in layers or terraces (rice terrace). The excessive water in the rice terraces will then flow naturally from the hilltop to the lower area. This method of planting and irrigation system is known 12

as Subak. Due to its eco-friendly system and sustainability, the Subak is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage of mankind. One of the well-known rice terraces in Ubud is Tegalalang, located about 5 kilometres from the city centre. Its well-photographed picturesque landscape appears in numerous postcards and travel magazines around the world year after year. There are many stalls selling souvenirs and coffee shops along the road. You can opt to sip coffee or tea while savoring some local delicacies while you enjoy the view. VOYAGE TO

PUYA A TORAJAN

FUNERAL T text & photos : Bayu Winata

he aroma of the drinks that served to me by my local friend Pian, as if an opening acts in opera to our conversation. What is in my cup is known as Toraja Coffee, named after the place itself. Toraja are an ethnic group indigenous to a mountainous region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia and I am here to attend a funeral ceremony of the Toraja tribe known as Rambu Solo.

THE JOURNEY MAY 2014

15

Rambu Solo is funeral ceremony for the Toraja Tribe, they believed that there are lives after death. An eternal realm where the soul of their ancestor gathers and rested, A realm known as Puya. They believed that a perfect complete ceremony procession will ensure a place there. The Torajan people believed if the Rambu Solo ceremony was not held, then the remains of the dead is still in “sick” condition, therefore they still treat the dead remains as if they were still alive. Their clothes will be changed and even the family is giving drinks and foods. A family meeting will be held to discuss the preparations and expenses for the funeral ceremony. After the ceremony is held, then the family relationship with the dead is considered end. The main ceremony will be held in the Tongkonan, a traditional house of Toraja. A few cows that have been groomed, are prepared to be part of the ceremony. The cows will be sacrified; they believe the cows will serve as a vessel to send the dead to “the other side”. The blood spills mark the beginning of the funeral procession. The remains had been laid inside the red and gold colored decorated coffin as the color that resembles death in Toraja culture. While the coffin is decorated the family member allowed crying but when the ceremony had started they no longer allowed. After the coffin is ready and 16

the family members had gathered, then the ceremony begins. With a preacher sermon serve as an opening, then the family called one by one to gather around the coffin. The coffin then parade circling the Tongkonan three times as a sign the dead is ready to leave the house, after that the coffin will be placed on a stretcher and leaves to Lakian the final resting place. Once arrived in Lakian, 800 meter long and winding red fabric is already prepared it will be used to pull the coffin. There is an interesting act during the ceremony, the coffin is shacked on the way up by the people who carrying it. The meaning of this act is that the family have to be happy to ensure the dead’s journey to Puya is easy. H

ave you ever heard about a lake that is so beautiful with crystal clear water? If you don’t, then Labuan Cermin Lake is the

answer! Located in Labuan Kelambu Village in sub-district Biduk-biduk, East Kalimantan Regency. It takes about 6 to 7 hours from Tanjung Redeb, the capital city of Berau Regency. There are several ways to reach Berau, usually travelers visit the Derawan islands before visiting Labuan Cermin. After breakfast, I was greeted by warm sunrise on my first morning in Biduk Biduk. Then I headed to Labuan Cermin. By following road signs I finally made it, a blurred and torn sign of Labuan Cermin welcomes me. THE JOURNEY MAY 2014

THE JOURNEY MAY 2014

There are only two boats available to reach the lake, they will take the visitors to the lake then return to the bridge to pick up others. They operate in away of a shuttle. Once the boat left the departing point, we were faced with strong stream because it is low tide. When we pass the iron bridge, we entered a swallow lagoon with turquoise collored water and within minutes we had arrived at the beautiful Labuan Cermin Lake. A raft is placed in the lake for visitor to change their clothes or just sit around before dipping into the water. My curiosity leads me into tasting the water, it turns out that it is tasteless! A kid told me that the water below is the salt water. It is crystal clear, you can even see through the bottom of the lake. As I said earlier, the lakes actually have two waters, fresh water on the top and salt water underneath. A pack of fish swims between the

sunken woods at the bottom of lake, several times I try to dive to feel the water difference. Some kids are diving with bottle and fill it with the salt water below and give it other visitors who don’t dive as proof that it is salt water. The sun is high up when we leave this beautiful lake, the captain had to be careful to look for deeper water to avoid being stranded. There more to offer from Biduk-biduk regency, along coastal line with beautiful beach, also the Sulaiman Bay with amazing landscape of green hills and waterfall. Too bad I don’t have time to explore more. A farewell message saying “don’t forget to come here again” as if a sign that one day I will be here again. visit www.backpackerborneo.com for more travel stories and photos of Indonesia from Indra Setiawan

MARTABAK MANIS oosely translated to Sweet Indonesian Thick Pancake (Chocolate & Cheese). It is also known as Terang Bulan amongst the locals. Martabak Manis is a common street food that can be easily found in the streets of Indonesia. The sweet filling sandwiched between this pancake traditionally consists of condensed milk, chocolate, cheese, fruits and crushed peanuts. Lately however, the increase in modern bakeries gave rise to a variety of fusion flavours, including Blackforest and even Tiramisu Martabaks. The texture of a good Martabak Manis has to to be soft and chewy with its distinct honeycomb texture. Terang Bulan can be easily found in simple street stall. Best enjoy while it was hot,

Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea). The smaller islands fall into two main groups: the Molluccas to the northeast, and the lesser Sunda chain east of Bali. Bali is a unique island, which for a number of reasons can be put into a class of its own. The favourable condition have attracted a great number of visitors to Indonesia. Visiting Indonesia means seeing and experienceing the unique diverse cultural and astonishing natural beauties that this country has to offer and explore.
