Gran Alacant man admits he has 'blown the lot.' Spending 5.5€ million in 13 years

= over 8,000€ per week!

EXCLUSIVE! BY Dave Bull

When Lawrence Cavendish won £5.5 million on the National Lottery in 1997 he thought all his dreams had come true, and surely they had. The British press praised lauded him as a worthy cause because he needed a double-hip replacement and it looked as though no one more deserving could

have won the jackpot. But the likeable and generous lottery player soon started splashing the cash and eventually, arrived in Spain, setting up a bar and homes for his family in Gran Alacant, but since then things have gone horribly wrong and Lawrence has realised that living the high life has Costa lot! Believe it or not, the £5.5 million has gone, every single penny and the bank have demanded his assets includ-

ing Mr Cavendish’s Irishthemed bar and Spanish Villa and he is back in the UK, after losing the lot! To put the this amount of cash (£5.5 million) into perspective, at the time of the win in 1997, Lawrence was launched onto the Times rich list in 61st place but luck was not on his side; Lawrence lost his best friend and then his father (who was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met) after his lottery win and bad luck seemed to seek

him out. His family had earlier fled Tyneside after thugs torched his house and his sister's car. When he won his fortune, the generous factory worker immediately shared his cash with his many relatives, paying out £370,000 to buy seven houses in the same street in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear so that they could be close together.

SPAIN’S RICH OWE THE TAXMAN 4€ MILLION EACH! Dave Bull

Most of Spain's richest residents owe an average of four million euros in taxes according to a report by Hacienda. Representatives from the ministry of tax say they carried out 500 inspections on people and companies with an annual turnover of greater than 100 million euros, and found that most of them owed serious amounts money of money with the average being over four million euros each.

5 FAMOUS FINANCIAL FRAUDSTERS – see page 6

In 2010, Hacienda managed to claw back over 10 billion euros by investigating fraudulent tax claims and in the past five years, they have recovered in excess of 45,600 million euros. However, following complaints from businesses the tax office refuted suggestions that it was intensifying its inspection efforts in order to claw back greater money due to the recession, and claim that taxpayers' debts had simply increased.

After a long night of making love, the guy notices a photo of another man, on the woman's nightstand by the bed. He begins to worry. 'Is this your husband?' he nervously asks. 'No, silly,' she replies, snuggling up to him. 'Your boyfriend, then?' he continues.

'No, not at all,' she says, nibbling away at his ear. 'Is it your dad or your brother?' he inquires, hoping to be reassured. 'No, no, no! You are so hot when you're jealous!' she answers. 'Well, who in the hell is he, then?' he demands. She whispers in his ear… 'That's me before the surgery.’...

ORIHUELA ‘ANGEL WHISPERER’ PREDICTED ARAB UPRISINGS!

PP GOES GAGA

Local Angel Communicator predicted Middle East Uprising Two Years Ago

By Sally Bengtsson Francesca Brown, who lives in Orihuela Costa, when she’s not busy giving workshops all over Europe, has been in the UK news lately due to having predicted uprisings in the Middle East two years ago, after conversations she had with angels. Courier reporter Sally Bengtsson was lucky enough to meet Francesca two years ago, and the interview left a lasting impression on Sally. After the trouble which has hit Egypt, Libya, Yemen and many of the other Middle Eastern countries to one degree or another, Francesca insists she finally has proof that the predictions she was told by her angels really are reliable. Sceptics laughed when Francesca claimed in her best-selling book, “My Whispering Angels”, that there would be uprisings in the Middle East that would eventually lead to a more peaceful world. But when she saw the riots in Egypt last week, she realised the angels’ premonition was coming true. “The other day when I happened to turn on the television, I saw what was happening in the Middle East at the moment. And for some reason when I looked at it, I was guided back to my book knowing that the angels told me before that a lot of systems were going to break down and that there will be a peeling away of old systems where everything will have to change in the world. They said that it would be the Middle East where it was going to start.” And this isn’t the first time the angels have seen the future. She adds, “I was taken back a little bit when I realised the angels’ premonition had come true but then I have learned to trust them. Angels come into the world; it’s not that they’re giving me prediction after prediction. They come into the world to try to help us, and one of the jobs is to help heal us as well. And when you look at everything that is going on at the moment, even in our own back yards, I do believe that there is a great healing process beginning. Even though we mightn’t see it at the moment because everyone is getting sucked into doom and gloom, the angels are always saying to me, ‘Don’t get sucked into doom and gloom.

Keep positivity in your own life and your own life will go the way it’s supposed to go.’ “The angels haven’t told me anything else that is going to happen in the world soon, but sometimes when I’m writing for them they just tell me things. “I remember last year before there was the earthquake in Haiti, them telling me that a big earthquake was emerging out that way.” In her book, Francesca writes about her experiences with angels after first seeing them when they helped her recover from ME, which kept her bedridden for two years. She says everyone can talk to their guardian angel. She says, “I wrote about this two years ago and my book has been out the past two years. It’s in it. It’s not just something I’m writing about today and it’s already been portrayed on the news. “People may say it’s just a coincidence but the angels were telling me about this two years ago that all of this unrest will come and it will be the Middle East where it starts.”

A candidate for the Popular Party in Tarragona has been 'serenaded' by Lady Gaga...albeit because his friends re-hashed the American pop sensation's 2010 summer hit, Alejandro, and uploaded a video of their performance of it on Youtube.com. A l e j a n d r o Fernández was said to be 'thrilled' to find out that supporters of his party had added that ‘’In the last two days I have seen, first-hand, the power of the internet, which has given me the possibility to express my ardour for Tarragona via the international media.’’ Whatever. The lyrics of the 'new' version of the Lady Gaga hit read: ’’Toca PP, confía en Alejandro,’’ (‘it’s the PP's turn, trust in Alejandro).

TONY MAYES …says it like it is ‘Always controversial’

PHONEY WOULD-BE PARENTS SHOULD PASS EXAM FIRST! COMPANIES Times are tough but you wouldn’t know it if you are a fat-cat boss of the ‘Frank Spencer’ of communication, Telefonica. Ten billion profits last year. TEN BILLION in the middle of a recession and they can still take 14 days to move your line. It just makes you wonder exactly how much they could make if they were efficient…? On the same subject (that’s crap phone companies) the news that a Vodafone customer has been paying someone else’s bill for months comes as no surprise. I have several friends who have finished their contracts with Vodafone and asked (many times and unsuccessfully) for a final factura…before latterly getting a lawyers letter asking them to pay… You’d think Mr Bean was running the country…oh, he is, isn’t he…

Wayne & Waynetta - testing times The vast majority of parents try to raise their children properly; try to ensure they have regard for others, have good manners and know right from wrong. Sadly there is a growing minority in the UK and, unfortunately, within the ex-pat community here in Spain that do not. Often these have not been brought up property themselves and then breed the next generation of na'er-do-wells and it's this growing "army' of bad parents which is costing the UK a fortune in benefits. During the early years of my career in journalism I reported at the local magistrates' courts every day and got to recognise many of the defendants standing in the dock. There they were, month in month, committing thefts, burglaries, robberies and alcohol-fuelled offences. It was the same old familiar faces over and over again. Most had the benefit of subsidised council homes; those with children had additional benefits. Most smoked, drank and more often than not were down the pub most nights. Little wonder that they set the very worst of examples to their kids. After about 20 years I no longer regularly attended courts, but one day I happened to be passing a reporters' desk and spotted a court list there. Lo and behold the same names were on the list as they were more than 20 years ago. But on closer examination they weren't the people I remembered, but their children – it was their surnamed I recognised. All the help, benefits and nurture that society had poured on these people back in the ‘70s and ‘80s had done nothing to prevent the creation of another generation causing trouble, living on benefits and ending up costing society an absolute fortune. Just add up the cost of the prison service, probation service, social workers, housing benefits and a plethora of other benefits and you’ve got the picture. And all for what? It got me wondering how society can escape from this ridiculous merry-go-round of one generation of bad pen-

nies creating the next. Unfortunately, the benefits culture in Britain actually encourages people from the worst backgrounds to have more children - the more they have the greater call they have on the benefits system. We have all read stories in the national press about young girls getting pregnant because they see an easier life being kept by the State than trying to get a job. We're also heard of the huge families, the size of a football team, requiring extended homes receiving upwards of 30,000 pounds in benefits each year. Sadly, while the system actually encourages these people to have more children, the majority of which are not being raised in a way to create responsible adults, the middle classes are being financially squeezed because of the recession they are having an ever-increasing problem raising children. Modern society requires us to take exams for almost everything in life. We can't go through school life without taking one exam after another. If you apply for a job, often there is a test involved. If you want to drive a car you have to take a test to show you are responsible enough to sit behind the wheel. Yet the most important thing that any adult is empowered to do - to raise the next generation - requires no test whatsoever. Any total dimbo can get pregnant, anyone can set up home and have a child and if they make an absolute disaster of it ,all that happens is that the child is put into care and nothing is done to prevent the mother having another and another, all paid for on the State. Social engineering was made a no-go area thanks to Hitler and his appalling attempts to re-shape society to his own ends. Without the curse of the Nazis, some attempt of social engineering may have been possible today. But the sorry mess we have today is something that will have to be addressed sooner or later and it's going to take the Wisdom of Solomon to bring it about.

MEDITERRANEAN RISNG FASTER THAN EVER By Spike

Global warming affects everyone...

QUOTE: "What happens in the future will depend both on the laws of Nature and human behaviour" We all know that the seas around us are rising but did you realise that during the 20th century the Mediterranean Sea rose, on average, at a rate of 1.5mm a year. That’s a total rise of between 15 and 20 centimetres over the past 100 years, but in the current century that rate has already been doubled in the first ten years! This latest information comes from a recent study by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography. At a press conference last week, Manuel Vargas Yáñez, co-author of the second edition of "Climate Change in the Spanish Mediterranean" explained his research has discovered that between the 1960s and the mid1990s the sea did not rise much, but from then on it began to rise very sharply and, he warned that the 15-20cm rise over the whole of the past century could become problematic for some Pacific islands. If this rise is added to the 35 centimetres it is estimated the sea will rise over the course of the current century (if it maintains the current rate) the total rise in sea level since records began could

be as high as half a metre. The worry is that the current rate of the sea level rising will not stay constant but will in fact increase, depending on other ‘forces’ such as greenhouse gases – the rate of which is going up also. If the worst case scenario pans out the experts warn that there is a possibility that the sea will rise 60cm this century, which, added to the rise seen over the last 100 years, we would begin to see "many densely-populated coastal areas suffer tremendous losses", and if that wasn’t bad enough, natural phenomena like hurricanes and storms will have much more devastating effects. The reason of the sea level rise? Put simply it is the increasing temperature of the water (which expands and takes up more space), atmospheric pressure also has an effect and the increase in water volume which is due in part to melting ice caps. Add to all that the fact that the salinity of the Mediterranean has also increased because of less rain, a greater degree of evaporation, and, of course the human touch such as, the building of reservoirs which generally reduce the amount of fresh water that runs to the sea from the rivers.

DO YOU REMEMBER…? By Alan Gilchrist Costa Blanca’s Top Hypnotherapist

After the last article was published I was inundated with more trivia about the past. Keep them coming by contacting me on trivia@alangilchrist.com. Everyone loves remembering trivia about the past so I thought I would devise an ongoing quiz that (almost) everyone can join in. Before he left however, he told friends on Facebook: 'I won the lottery 13 years ago and blew the lot so I have plenty of stories to tell.' Lawrence's story echoes that of former binman Michael Carroll who turned up to collect his £9.7million win wearing an electronic offender's tag.

Lawrence has had some bad luck and of course, we make our own luck, apart from when it comes to choosing the lottery numbers. However, this does demonstrate, as does the case of Michael Carroll why people should treat becoming seriously rich great caution. We all dream of winning the lottery, which is why we buy lottery tickets every week, but such a change in life requires much thought and can often be the undoing of many. But I’m still willing to take the risk…

OBAMA LA BAMBA With all what’s going on in the Arab states at the moment is anyone a little suspicious, as I am, about the lack of involvement of the good ol’ US of A? I mean they’ve normally got their aircraft carriers fired up and their Generals have got the toys out on the desk again by now. But nothing. Not even a threat of blasting everyone to smithereens by noon (and a good chance they might even shoot the enemy…). If Bush was still in power he’d have had his ‘boys’ marching through Tahrir Square in Egypt and onto the Pearl roundabout in Bahrain a week last Tuesday. But then we’ve got Obama as the leader of the free world now, not someone who didn’t know what to do on 9/11. And he seems a bit more laid back don’t you think? He seems more likely to ask Gadaffi for some ‘one on one’ on the basketball court than start a couple of wars or three. We’ll see, but as for Gadaffi – I think we’re about to discover just how mental he really is…or was.

INFUSIONS…? More like ‘Confusions’ Popping into the local ‘trendy’ café bar used to be a simple affair; the usual arrangement of coffees a wide choice of booze but if you’ve been lately you’ll notice that anyone who actually is trendy is supping tea. Now before you start thinking that PG Tips is the new ‘black’ and that you’re obviously right up to date as your cupboard is full of catering bags of the stuff, stop. For this isn’t tea as you and I know it this is an ‘infusion.’ Behind the bar you’ll see the ‘Jardin Del Te,’ or a shelf as you and I know it, brimming with attractive containers that contain, what looks like what is commonly known amongst bird fanciers as ‘Trill’. Now these teas have magical powers and will stimulate your mind, open up your breathing passages and make you regular along with many other benefits helping you relax in your trendy bar, unless your passages have opened up a bit too keenly… They are called ‘teas of the world’ with certain

JUST WHEN YOU FANCY A QUIET NIGHT OUT Got invited out the other night…by a lovely Spanish woman no less. A phone call from her and ten minutes later I was showered, changed and ready to go (I can do it quicker…). Half an hour later we met in town and went for an aperitif in a quiet bar before moving on to the restaurant – I’d booked it earlier, in-between the shower and getting dressed – and it was here that we bumped into a couple of her friends. Three hours later and with several other friends and various members of her extended family in tow – and a few more bars patronised – we were within spitting distance of the restaurant. The same restaurant where I’d reserved a table in readiness for a cosy meal for two…and we should have been there two hours previously. But, as usual, when I’m out with a beautiful woman (what?) I was not using my brain to do the thinking and had left the restaurant number at home, so it was a case of pacifying the owner when we eventually got there. We got there at just after mid-

night. All fourteen of us. And, as ever in Spain, the owner didn’t bat an eyelid when asked to make room for another dozen people at the cosy corner table…how romantic. After another two and a half hours of eating and drinking and more eating, only interrupted by the Spanish family members asking (shouting) me questions – all at once, and the end was in sight – the restaurant was shutting. I got out, stuffed with the finest seafood and the cheapest wine, and with a back looking (and feeling) as if it was severely sunburnt after the whole lot of ‘em had slapped me as an affectionate way of saying goodbye. I remember the soccer riots of the eighties and I got slapped more gently by gorilla shaped Arsenal fans back then than I did on this night. But it was the end, and I could go home. Six hours, enough food to make Pat Butcher smile, and enough liquid to test the fittest bladder and it was over…and there was me earlier in the evening just hoping for a quick nibble…

countries offering up differing variations, for example the English tea is Earl Grey but I’ve yet to meet anyone from England who actually drinks the stuff apart from our photographer who comes from Manchester so that doesn’t count. It should be PG in there when they open the fancy tin. Imagine the look on some poor Yuppies face as he sees a tea bag dropped into a cup with two big lumps of sugar and god portion of milk. Slap a bacon butty down next to it and you’ve got a proper English tea with the appropriate accompaniment instead of Earl Grey which tastes like someone has dropped a dandelion in it to soak…for several days. No, give me a good old English cuppa anytime. ‘Tropical Sunrise’ may well relax me and help me breathe and ‘Midnight Sunset’ may aid my digestive system. But when I was little I had similar tasting stuff to this which did exactly the same as an infusion, but for a quarter of the price…we called it medicine…

BIN HIDIN’?

This week I had a rude awakening when I jumped out of my skin one night as I took the rubbish out and lifted the lid of the big grey bin to discover a Moroccan chap grinning at me (toothless) from the inside (with a miners torch on his head). After a quick ‘hola’ he was back to it – head down, and rummaging, – so I turned my attention to the adjacent bin, where a lot of noise was coming from, to find his wife, scouring the bags for her particular brand of treasure…and another toothless smile – complemented with a cheery ‘Buenos Noches’ then she was back to it… I love Spain…

...AND ANOTHER THING The markets in Spain are the best in the world I reckon; at the last one I left with a four foot rug, a diving knife and a pair of ‘Ray Ban’ sunglasses and the whole lot cost me less than ten Euros. And, you can buy anything you want – you name it, the Africans have salvaged it, usually from your local bin and put it back on sale; from fridge motors to car tyres and old Hoovers to dildos, the world, as Del Boy used to say, is your Lobster.

SPAIN’S ‘OPPORTUNITY NOT TO BE MISSED’

BY Dave Bull

S p a i n ’ s announcement last week that it was introducing a series of energy saving measures, including cuts to the speed limit and lower prices for train tickets, is in response to the rise in world oil prices due to unrest in the Middle East.

Said Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba at a news conference, last week, "The goal is to reduce the consumption of oil and gas to reduce our energy bill which has risen in recent days and which we do not forecast will drop." All very understandable but couldn’t they have come out and said that they were doing it for even better reasons, say for example, they could have announced that they had thought about it long and hard and quite frankly unless they did something to help save the planet, then they wouldn’t be able to sleep at night. But no, these being Spanish politicians they said, ‘we want to save some money…’ You see Spain has one of the highest dependencies in the European Union on fossil fuels for its energy needs and the rise in oil prices has added to pressures on inflation and the country's trade deficit.

I suppose we can at least say they are doing the right thing for the wrong reasons, which is a complete reverse to the normal way of doing things for Zapatero, and under the temporary measures which will come into effect on March 7th the speed limit on Spain's highways will be reduced to 110 kilometres per hour. And state-owned rail network Renfe has been told to slash ticket prices on short and medium distance trips, as well as on suburban commuter trains, by up to five per cent in an effort to encourage more commuters to leave their cars at home. Like my local mechanic when I take my bike in for repair and ask when it will be ready, Spain’s energy minister, Pedro Rubalcaba, said the measures would be temporary…but he would not say when they would end. As for the price of oil, last Friday Brent North Sea crude oil rose

76 cents to $112.12 per barrel - the highest level since August 22, 2008 and each increase of 10 euros in the cost of a barrel of oil adds about six billion euros to Spain's energy bill. Another problem at the moment is the events in the Arab states, especially North Africa as Spain imports about 13 per cent of its oil from Libya and around 35 per cent of its gas from Algeria and although Spain says it has oil reserves that could last for over 90 days that, in reality, is not a long time. So why don’t the Spanish government take this opportunity to reduce its reliability on supplies of fossil fuels from dodgy states that have a tendency to ‘kick off’ now and again? And use it to promote the use of public transport and the like for the sake of the planet? Those alone should be reason enough – the cash saving alone would be more than enough to keep the politicians in ‘second homes’…

Not a pretty sight

TONY MAYES …says it like it is. ONE TOO MANY?

Are you drinking too much? DOCTORS in Britain fear that if people continue to drink alcohol at their present rate, within 20 years it will result in an additional quarter of a million deaths. That is a dreadful statistic - it's the equivalent of the entire population of Brighton and Hove wiped out prematurely. Alcohol abuse and obesity together are likely to bring the NHS to its knees within 15 years unless people change their habits. It's no wonder that doctors are calling on the Government to take drastic action and are calling for the price of drink to be raised. But would this alone be the answer? I think not. First, it would take a massive change in the Brits' attitude to drink to make any difference. I used to work in an office full of 20 and 30-somethings and the main topic of conversation every Monday, after the usual boring diatribe about football and cricket, was how many times they had got bladdered! Visit any town or city in the UK or a Friday and Saturday night and you see young Brits at their worst. Spilling from clubs and pubs fighting drunk, being sick, and urinating in public places. The human race hasn't progressed much beyond the animal kingdom, with its rutting season - the only difference is

the "season" seems to happen every weekend and most other times as well. Seriously, this alcohol abuse is wrecking lives, destroying the livers of people in their teens. We see the same problem over here in Spain with people returning home tanked up with booze in the small hours, banging doors, shouting, moving furniture on solid floors and clip-clopping in high heels with total disregard to any neighbour. Booze here in Spain is far cheaper than the UK but doesn't seem to encourage people to drink any more here than they would in Britain. What would make a difference, both here and in Britain is if clubs and pubs closed an hour or two earlier. People would still drink, but not over such a long period. Drastic action has been taken on the grounds of public health to tackle smoking and it's had general support because the majority don't smoke. Now is the time to tackle the even more thorny alcohol abuse crisis, but it's going to be that much more difficult, because the vast majority of us enjoy a tipple. I FELT sad to be British last week when I heard of the pathetic attempt by the UK to rescue our nationals from the "war-zone" of Libya. While other European countries

responded within hours to rescue their nationals, flying in planes and troop transports to Libya, we were still trying to get planes off the ground at Gatwick! I heard it said we would have to get the permission of the Libyan "government" to fly into Tripoli. We should have an army, navy and air force ready to be mobilised within hours to deal with any emergency and if that means flying warplanes, troop transports and helicopter gunships in then so be it, with or without permission. Can you imagine Britain mounting a Dunkirk-style evacuation today? It makes you wonder what would happen if there ever was a real crisis over here affecting the safety of ex-pats. Heaven help us! WE'VE all seen, day after day, the plight of people in eartrhquake-torn Christchurch, New Zealand. One thing we always see in these situations is high-rise buildings reduced to rubble, crushing people beneath. Question: why build high rise in known earthquake areas? A SNIPPET of news made me chuckle last week. It was revealed what was the most complained of TV advert. It wasn't one which involved sex, religion or belittled women; it was one where a group of people were chewing while they spoke. It seems that bad manners still annoy others more than anything else!

Police chief’s warning to crooks on the Costa

A

CH T GO Dave Bull If Anthony Fraser (Frankie’s grandson) hasn’t been nabbed by the time you read this and is still on the run (or on the beach), the crime-fighting organisation Crimestoppers can claim some early success after it confirmed a second successful arrest had occurred within 48 hours of its latest campaign launch in Spain.

Rice, 40, was convicted in his absence in the UK and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2006 for conspiracy to kidnap & false imprisonment but has managed to evade the authorities for almost five years until now. Dave Cording, Director of Operations at Crimestoppers, said: “Two arrests in 48 hours is an incredible achievement. I am pleased that the launch has encouraged the public to contact us with information to help track down Britain’s most wanted criminals. ‘’ This second arrest shows the success of highlighting these individuals in the public eye through local and national media and even though Rice was publicised in an earlier Operation Captura, it shows that the public continue to bring information forward and this latest arrest means that the number of criminals picked up following appeals is an impressive 40, out of 60 appeals. Continuing Mr Cording warned crooks on the run in Spain, “I would like to send out a message to the remaining wanted individuals that you can run but you can’t hide forever because someone, somewhere, will recognise you." If you have any information on the remaining appeals remember you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously from Spain on the free phone number 900 555 111 or through the website www.crimestoppers_uk.org

EXCLUSIVE

SUSPECTED KILLER’S WIFE ADMITS SHE LIED

MAD FRANKIE’S GRANDSON WORKING AT AIRPORT

Sensational ‘confession’ live on Spanish TV! By Dave Bull A suspected killer’s wife who gave her husband an alibi that proved that he couldn’t be guilty of the murder has sensationally changed her mind and pointed the finger at him live on Spanish TV. Isabel García, who originally testified in front of a judge on February 16th that her husband could not have been guilty, was whisked away from the TV studios immediately and taken to a police station where she voluntarily gave a statement. She is now expected to be charged with perjury and will face the courts on further charges of obstructing justice in the mean time she has been detained following a court appearance last Saturday. Police investigating the case are continuing to question Mrs García, the wife of Santiago del Valle, the man charged with killing five-year-old Mari Luz Cortés, after she told Telecinco’s Ana Rosa programme this morning that her husband was, in fact, the killer. On the programme she said she was changing her story and declared that in fact it was her husband who had killed the little girl, but that it was an "accident, it wasn't planned, it just happened". She continued and according to her, Santiago del Valle tempted the girl in with sweeties "or a teddy bear because he wanted me to meet her". She then went on to say that her husband had confessed that Mari Luz had a fall and hit her head. Once unconscious, her husband and her sister-in-law put her into the car and took her to a nearby river and callously threw her in. Her latest version of events coincides with the forensic evidence brought to the court, which shows that

Anthony Fraser is possibly on the Costa Blanca

Well no, not quite – but that was just one of the many ‘sightings’ sent or called in to The Courier office last week. Clearly our readers have a sense of humour as we have had reports that Anthony Fraser, grandson of ‘mad’ Frankie Fraser, is working at such places Hertz car hire and Carrefour. Three times he’s been spotted driving (but in three different cars) and of course we’ve had several ‘I think he works in our local chip shop.’

Isabel Garcia in court last weekend Mari Luz drowned but when asked why they didn't take the little girl to the hospital, Isabel said her sister-in-law didn't want to "because everyone knows her". Looking fragile, Isabel García said she regretted all the suffering caused to Mari Luz' family and moaned that she hoped that her husband doesn’t now hate her. Encouraged by the programme’s presenter, Ana Rosa, to spill the beans so that she could settle her "conscience", Isabel confessed that she saw her husband with his boots covered with mud on the day (after allegedly taking Mari Luz to the riverside) and that he had tried to scrub them clean during the evening, and suggesting that they run away to Russia or Bosnia. Suggesting that she is perhaps not blessed with a reasonable amount of intelligence, she added that he hadn’t threatened her if she talked, but did admit that he had said "we could both end up in prison, but I thought he was joking, because he's always joking around with me"…

YOU GOTTA HA

Abandoned pony needs our help! Pony goes to Barcelona for life-saving treatment… BY Gina Marks This is no ordinary rescue, this is the story of Faith…..a young pony shackled, abandoned and left to die, Faith was found and rescued by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s team and introduced to her new vet Dorothea Dudli von Dewitz, who began assessing and treating her horrendous inflicted leg wounds, which were similar to a bomb victims. The shackles had caused serious damage to Faith’s flesh and front left leg bone. A new stem cell treatment was implemented; an extensive plus expensive treatment has been performed on Faith’s leg every single evening for seven months including Christmas night, New Year’s Eve and day. After monitoring the leg, it appeared that the treatment was working, only to find that after taking exrays sadly the bone was dying, with bone disease setting in which is extremely painful for both humans and animals. Everyone new that something special had to be done for Faith. This is when Sue decided to called the world renowned equine foot and leg vet specialist Gasper Castelijns, based in Barcelona who had previously treated another EHC pony Cookie. Sue reiterated the story, and asked Gasper for advice, whilst also remembering an email that she had received about a year ago on Molly the Pony.com in the United

States, who had the same wounds as Faith and had her leg amputated and prosthesis fitted some five years ago, making headlines across America, with the ground breaking operation. Molly incidentally now provides great hope and inspiration to children and adults facing amputations, along with working in Cancer for Kids Camps. Sue asked Gasper if a similar operation would work on Faith and would he be prepared to consider performing this ground breaking operation here in Spain. This is where the story really takes a turn, as the only options left for Faith were to amputate the leg, and fit a prosthesis, or put her to sleep………. as no one would keep a pony alive in pain……. Sue called SOL Productions, with the story about Molly the pony and the possibility that the same thing could happen to Faith, the gravity of the story is fascinating with the potential results for Faith, and the inspiration that she could provide, here in Spain. We wanted to follow the story, that’s when last Monday morning started in the usual way at the SOL Productions offices, program scheduling, editing, answering phones and emails, then the email arrived, Faith the little pony was going to make the journey to Barcelona on Tuesday, the following day! Gasper had agreed to perform the operation….similar to Molly the pony. This was not much notice for the SOL crew to prepare, but jumping into action we

changed our filming schedules so we could film Faith’s last day at the Centre. Emotional, would be an understatement, it was very surreal at the stables as the day unfolded, it was clear to see what an impact this little pony has amongst fellow equines and all the surrounding humans. We interviewed Sue about the situation, the process of what is to follow, and what would be the likely outcome of Faith’s three month stay in Barcelona. Then as the time to set off on Faith’s seven hour journey was drawing close, vet Dorothea arrived for the last time to dress Faith’s leg and add supports to the other legs to ensure that Faith had the safest and most comfortable way to travel, as she may not lie down in the trailer, it was so important to protect the other 3 good legs. Witnessing and filming the treatment Faith has been undergoing daily for seven months, was heart wrenching, and proof that this is one very patience, determined and loved pony, that it is clear to say, is not ready to be beaten, or be put to sleep, I can now see exactly why Sue has pursued with the Faith Appeal, to raise the 8.000 euro needed to fund this life changing operation. It was an emotional good bye for Sue and the volunteers, tears freely flowed and after witnessing the treatment on Faith, her personality within the stables and her character really shone through, this pony has the biggest personality, tenacity, and will to survive that I cannot put into words, this pony

KNOWS she is going to get help. With Faith in the trailer ready for Rod to drive her through the night to Barcelona, we filmed the trailer setting of at dusk…….we, all rather emotional went home to wait for news of Faith’s successful arrival in Barcelona and Gaspers inspection of just how bad her leg is and the news of when he will perform the operation to remove her lower leg………. I said this was no ordinary story……. Wednesday mornings phone call was to blow everyone away with the news, that Gasper had been researching if amputation was the only option……the new twist, as I received the phone call will probably change not only Faith’s future, but that of her vet, Gasper and the surgery team as I was told they are not going to amputate the leg, but perform surgery to re grow the bone by using human operating tools and a crystal rug with a chemical treatment that is used on bomb and landmine victims, which has been pioneered over the last two years on humans due to the appalling atrocities of wars which causes similar conditions. We were all amazed at the turn of events and the speed that things were progressing, Friday’s phone call, was even more mindblowing as I was informed that Faith was undergoing the pioneering surgery there and then, the human operating tools and titanium screws had arrived from the UK and the 7 strong surgery team of 2 vets, 4 support

COURIER APPEAL SOL TV film Faith's progress

Leg Warmer - Faith gets treatment from some old bloke... staff and an anaesthetist were already performing the ground breaking and pioneering operation on Faith under anaesthetic. This sounds very graphic, but important to Faith, if the results of this surgery work then she will be left as a four legged, pain free pony with a small limp, not running the Grand National, but being part of making history and contributing to equine medical science. The surgery entailed going into the original wound talking out all the infection around the flesh, then dealing with the diseased Canon bone, cutting away the infection of the dead bone, and removing all the dead parts, using UK special screws made of Titanium these were screwed into the canon bone to get through to the marrow, which also has an infection, the hollow screws were placed lower down where the fetlock ankle joint is to place silicone tubes in, to inject directly into all the infected areas with a very powerful antibiotic. Then a titanium plate was placed over where they removed the canon bone to hold it all together. Once it was all cleaned and cleared they used a crystallised rug that is wrapped around the whole bone where it needs to grow, the chemicals enhance bone growth and makes the body produce

Horrific - Faith's leg is still in a bad way

new bone. A plaster cast was made to the full length and height of her leg and secured with pins that go into the bone, the cast being a fraction longer than the base of her foot, so Faith can walk on the plaster cast, the hoof will be dangling so she has no weight on the damaged leg, being pain free. This will encourage here movement to come back in her leg. The plaster cast has inspection windows that can be opened to inject more antibiotics into the screws and silicone tubes, injecting directly, so again pain free. After 11 days the cast will be taken off, to see if the new bone has started to grow, the treatment will be continued, Gaspar has stated that it could take up to one year for the bone to fully grow and the flesh to cover it. The next phone call on Saturday morning was received with a huge sigh of relief that the operation went very well, and that Gaspar is very optimistic and hopeful. However the next six weeks will be crucial as they watch Faith’s progress, and find out if medical science has been successfully moved forward to enable the very strong and determined pony to once again lead a normal life. By now most people have heard of the

Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, which rescues and rehabilitates equines, founded by Sue and Rod Weeding, they have turned their home and land into the rescue centre and corresponding charity, based in Rojales for 2 years, we have all read or seen some of the shocking cases they have undertaken. This really is no ordinary charity, I and many others have witnessed first-hand how much the horses and ponies mean to Sue, Rod and all of the supporters and volunteers. Now it is little FAITH’S turn to be in the spot light, her story from the beginning is shocking, but now this pioneering treatment she is receiving has to be funded. Are you now supporting the FAITH APPEAL? SOL Productions and The Courier are, if you would like to make a donation, you can visit the Centre in Rojales, donate via www.easyhorsecare.net. Watch out for and support the various fundraising activities that are being planned and will be published on www.solproductions.tv on SOL TV, in The Courier and in the local media. If you would like to hold a fundraising event, please contact Lesley, the EHC Events Manager Tel: 965 967 033 or 652 021 980 or email rescue@easyhorsecare.net

A DAY OUT WITH A DIFFERENCE Pensioners who were promised shopping centre actually got a shed…

!! T S U B ND A M R O BENID

The 'shopping outlet'

What the pensioners had hoped to enjoy When they were asked if they fancied a day out at Benidorm, with free lunch and a visit to the Benidorm Palace, and all for just 4 euros, four British friends from Santiago de la Ribera jumped at the chance. The fact that the trip was organised for Spanish pensioners didn’t put them off, as they all speak basic Spanish and enjoy integrating into the culture of the country they have adopted. They were told that these kinds of trips are subsidised by the Spanish Government. The early start from San Pedro Bus Station was a bit of a chore. They had to be there at 7:45am, but off they set, eager for a break from their daily routine and looking forward to seeing the feather clad dancers advertised in the promotional poster of the outing. They had been told they would be visiting a shopping outlet on the way up to Benidorm, so weren’t surprised when the coach pulled in to a big warehouse

in Alfaz del Pi. However, things began to go pear shaped when they were all herded into one of the numbered rooms in the warehouse, where they saw hundreds of other rooms, all filled with coach loads of pensioners from different parts of the region. There was a long room in the centre of the room, with rolls and bottles of wine. They all had a roll and the majority asked for a coffee. However, the unfortunate Spaniard who decided to open one of the bottles of wine after having his coffee was sternly told off, being informed he could only have one or the other, not both! After they had all finished elevenses the selling started. A whole variety of goods were brought out, from running machines to deep fat fryers. The items were all large and pricey, and not one of the pensioners wanted to buy anything. This went on for an hour, with the sellers getting more and more agitated. The group of ten Brits all stood up to leave after listening to the

hard sell for half the morning. They got outside the door and were immediately collared by one of the sellers, who told them, “You have eaten out food; you have drunk our wine...now you must buy our products.” Another one came up saying, “We have children to feed, our boss won’t be happy if we don’t sell anything.” The whole atmosphere became very tense, and even the Spaniards started getting up to leave. Then the sellers started to bring out some cheaper goods, such as throws for 10 euros, and a few people eventually bought a few goods. Altogether they were in there for two and a half hours, and it felt like a prison says Ruth. “We were waiting for the thumbscrews to come out next,” adds her husband Dave. Anyway, they were all then herded back to the coach; armed with their bags of obligatory purchases, and now looking forward to the relaxing meal and entertainment they had been promised. But when the coach

pulled up alongside a grotty hostel outside Benidorm their hearts sank. They all sat down to a buffet lunch, which in all fairness was OK. The hostel appeared to be owned by the same proprietors of the shopping outlet, as all the serviettes and plates were identical. So they weren’t surprised when, after lunch, they were told to go upstairs for the entertainment. It was definitely no

Benidorm Palace. There was a Spanish singer crooning tunes, and then a drag artist started singing and dancing. He was wearing a few feathers! As Carol says, the funniest bit was watching the reactions of the rest of the crowd. Some were in absolute hysterics and others were obviously shocked, as they would gasp in horror then get up to leave. They can laugh about the whole day out now, and

think about it with some philosophy. “You can’t take life too seriously. Always expect the unexpected in Spain.” As they say, the other people on the coach were very friendly and they were even given a Spanish salami sausage each to take home with them, which made the journey home rather fragrant to say the least. They got home just in time for Corrie!

Not a happy bunch

HOW’D THEY DO THAT…?! º When Barry played a song on the jukebox of Lil’s Cafe in Hawkwell, Central Essex, he didn’t know that he was changing his fate forever. Seventeen year old Carol still had some money left in the jukebox and he had jumped the queue. As a way of apologising he offered her a lift home his mate’s black cab, and ten months later they were married. At the time 18 year old Barry was working for a removal company and Carol worked in a clothes factory.

The following year their daughter Tina was born, and three more children followed. They bought a pub in 1982, “The King’s Arms” near Colchester, and then went on to buy “The Bird in Hand” in Chelmsford. They moved to Spain in 2005, to Santiago de la Ribera, as they fell in love with the area. Carol describes it as idyllic, with shops, the beach and sunshine on hand... a paradise. Their two daughters followed suit, buying holiday homes in Los Montesinos, so they

manage to spend a lot of time with their family, despite living here. Fifty years of married life aren’t always easy. As Carol says, “It hasn’t always been plain sailing, but it’s all about give and take... I give and Barry takes,” she laughs. She adds, “People don’t take their vows seriously any more, but we all say ‘For better or worse...’”

The celebration party was fantastic, in Cafe Golf in San Javier, which Carol describes as the ideal venue for this kind of party. “The decorations were beautiful and everyone had a great time.” We at The Courier send them our congratulations and wish them another fifty years of happily married life.

Union leaders said they were worried that many of airport workers would be asked to accept less pay

The threatened strike action would be April 22-25, but could be extended to May 22, when the country holds regional elections, the union leaders said. The government on Friday incorporated a new holding company under which private investors can buy up to 49 percent of AENA's shares. Spain's Socialist government halted an air traffic control strike in December by imposing an emergency decree that threatened employees with prison and placed control towers under military supervision. AENA director Javier Marin said he was confident that a deal to avert the strike could be achieved."I hope this worrying situation will be resolved through dialogue," Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said.

WHAT THE SPAN

FIVE SOLDIERS KILLED AT SPANISH MILITARY BASE Five soldiers were killed and three injured at a military facility in central Spain last Thursday in an accidental explosion. The accident occurred at the Military Engineering Academy at Hoyo de Manzanares, 35 kilometres from Madrid, which is the headquarters of a bomb disposal training centre, it also houses the International Demining Centre. Defence Minister Carme Chacon postponed a trip to Budapest for a meeting with her EU counterparts in order to visit the scene. "Five soldiers died and three others were injured" and taken to hospital, It was an explosion of great magnitude," she said, adding "They were preparing to save lives in Lebanon when their lost their own lives." Those who died were on a training exercise that was aimed at preparing them to join Spain's contingent in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), where they were to have taken part in operations to deactivate explosives, she told reporters. Among them were said to be some of the best bomb disposal experts in the armed forces and some whom had just returned from a mission in Afghanistan. Their families were informed immediately.

OH DO THEY…? Telefonica posts record 2010 net profit Spanish INCOMPETENT telecoms giant Telefonica posted

Friday a record 2010 net profit of 10.17€ billion, a 30.8 per cent jump over the previous year. This will be a bitter pill to swallow for their many disappointed customers who have come to regard their customer service department as a joke. Their revenues rose 7.1 per cent over the previous year to 60.7€ billion as the company added clients and its mobile and web access business grew as customers upgraded to smartphones, the company said in a statement. Telefonica is Europe's second-largest telecommunications company behind Britain's Vodafone and it predicted growth in revenues for this year of up to 2.0 per cent. A spokesman for the communications company said, "The strong growth posted by Telefonica Latin America and Telefonica Europe drove Telefonica's solid performance, offsetting the lower contribution of the business in Spain," it said. It seems incredible that in Spain, which is struggling with an unemployment rate of just over 20 per cent, the highest level in the industrialised world, in the present climate a company can post profits such as these. In fact in Spain revenues dropped but the rest of Europe, where Telefonica operates under the 02 brand, revenues increased 12.7 per cent to 15.25€ billion. But it is in fast-growing Latin America revenues rose 13.3 per cent to 26€ billion where Brazil accounted for 42.7 per cent of the company's revenues in the region last year and Telefonica's results were boosted by a revaluation of its previously held stake in Brazilian cell phone operator Vivo. In a statement the company said it had agreed to buy all Portugal Telecom's shares in Vivo to take control of the Brazilian operator as previously Telefonica and Portugal Telecom held 60 per cent of Vivo through Brasilcel, a joint investment entity.

‘ONLY’ 100€ MILLION PROFIT International Airlines Group, formed last month via the merger of British Airways and Iberia, posted Friday ‘modest’ 2010 net profit that showed earnings after taxation stood at 100€ million last year, compared with a loss of 777€ million euros in 2009, IAG said in a results statement.

The formation of the new company, IAG, was completed last month which turned it into Europe's second biggest airline by market value behind Lufthansa of Germany.

THEY’RE ALL AT IT? The row is still going on in the Valencian parliament and now the Socialist PSPV-PSOE Party has initiated a private prosecution against Francisco Camps, the current President of the Valencian Regional Government, demanding a threeyear prison sentence for his alleged bribery and an eight year ban from holding public office. The Valencian Socialists have asked the courts to look at prosecuting Francisco Camps, Ricardo Costa, Rafael Betoret and Victor Campos, all of whom have been charged with bribery after gifts (very nice suits in Francisco Camps case) they allegedly received from companies in the Gürtel network were linked to contracts handed out by the Generalitat Valenciana. The Socialists believe that the gifts Camps and his colleagues received were directly linked to the awarding of contracts, and not simply given to him because of the position he holds. Spanish law states that for bribery in their position of power it is possible prison sentences of between two and four years could be handed down to civil servants or public authorities who receive gifts or favours in exchange for using their position to secure contracts for third parties. It has been a controversial five years that Camps has been president of the Generalitat and in that time over 50 contracts have been awarded to the Gürtel group of companies, the vast majority of which never went to tender as required by government norms. Apart from the prison sentence for Camps, the Socialists are also demanding fines of between 18,000€ and 46,000€ for the PP politicians involved.

NISH PAPERS SAY

defrauded more than 9,100 people and 1,400 schools with a fake competition called 'Young Writers', in which he suggested to parents that their children stories be published in a book that he had no plans to print. He was caught by the Telematic Crimes Group of the Central Operational Unit of the Guardia Civil – a specialist outfit - and accused of charging parents in exchange for promising to see that their children's stories were published in a children’s stories book but his plan was to vanish with the money. The crook, who ruined many of the children’s dreams of seeing their own story in a book, is thought to have scammed thousands but many of them realised and reported the scam to police. It is believed that he probably obtained more than 160,000€. When he visited schools the callous fraudster pretended he was the manager of a company dedicated to organizing a short story contest for students in schools throughout the country, using a website and a publisher of the same name. However, it turned out that the publisher was part of a corporation run from England, where he has previously also committed the same fraud. When the students sent their stories to the site, they were then allegedly selected for publication in a book which was offered to parents at a price but one that they never received after having paid. While the children were trying their hardest to get a story in a book that was never going to be written the crook and his friends lived a flamboyant lifestyle, enjoying every luxury including, police also learned, renting a luxury home on the Costa del Sol e in a popular area of Marbella. Police got there first fortunately and arrested him when he landed at Malaga airport. On him, police found documents showing that he planned to repeat the scam in other countries and was about to head to France, Germany and Italy, to rip off more families. He and had already registered in those countries websites that were to be used for the same purpose. He also tried to scam novice writers too, for that he also created another website aimed at adult writers literary contests that were initiated into the world of literature. Investigations are still on-going to try to identify other persons associated with the fraudster and determine how many and what their involvement in the scam was.

NO BULL ON TV In an unprecedented move RTVE, Spain’s biggest television company, has stopped broadcasting bullfighting because it feels that the scenes of an animal getting slaughtered are too violent for children to see at peak

viewing times. It is rather ironic as the broadcaster launched 51 yearsago with a live bullfight but since 2007 dropped all live fights, only showing censored pre-recorded material. Good on them, now let’s ban it totally.

HAM MUCH? Do you like a plate of jamon Serrano – the typical and traditional ham of Spain? Well if you do and you fancy treating yourself to a very good one you may need to dig deep in your pockets. Last month a Spanish leg of ham went on sale for 3,600€ in London’s Harvey Nichols. Ham producer Maldonado from Extremadura launched a super-premium line dubbed by the Financial Times as one of the world’s most expensive delicacies with another (cheap?) Jamon selling for 1,800€ in Harrods. Maldonado Explained the incredible price saying the unhurried method of production and the purity of the pigs is why Spanish ham is so sought after.

THE GOOD, BAD…AND THE UGLY? 1,800 homes and 5.5€ MILLION golf course deal signed in Almeria. The Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Sport has announced that a project to build a new golf course in Almeria, which will be the second near the city and the ninth in the province will bring jobs and welcome tourism to the region. The Hoya Altica resort and golf project will be in the northern suburb of Retamar, bordering the natural park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar and is just eight kilometres from the airport. The project, the largest new development to be announced in for a very long time in the region is, according to the Ministry, a sign that international investors believe the luxury property market in Spain is about to start improving. The luxury site planned will include a golf course as the centrepiece of a complex with a spa, shopping centre and other tourist facilities and a private school plus plans are in for a five-star hotel and 1,800 homes will also be built on the land which is currently occupied by farms and has been used as the backdrop in the movies The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or Sergio Leone.

SPANISH TOURISM ON THE UP! If you’ve been reading the doom and gloom merchants in some of the press you might be surprised to discover that the number of foreign visitors to Spain is on the

increase. That’s according to the government which said there were 52.6 million tourists in Spain in 2010, which was up from 52.5 million in 2009 and is the first increase since 2007 following a drop in 2008 when the recession hit. Despite external factors, such as the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud and the air traffic controllers strike, Spain has managed to sustain a strong tourist industry and has also provided a larger than usual contribution to Spain’s GDP for the first time in ten years.

MULTIMILLIONAIRE DISCOVERS DECIMAL POINT ERROR.

DOH!

A MAN who thought he was a millionaire after he had inherited a multi-million sum of money from his dad has been left with just a couple of hundred thousand euros after a colossal error by two banks. In December 2002 He was told in by Banco de Valencia, where he holds an account, that he had been left the sum of 4.6€ million in shares by his father as part of a portfolio split between himself and other beneficiaries. At the time he couldn’t believe it and that led him to ask his bank to double-check, but they contacted BNP Paribas, trustees of the fund, who confirmed it was indeed the case. Overjoyed at his good fortune the lucky man decided to take a loan of 120,000€ pending receipt of his inheritance but only a few months later the Banco de Valencia admitted there had been a mistake and his 4.6€ million was in fact just 4,600€. But by this time the man had spent the money and was unable to pay it back and had also taken credit on goods on the assumption he was about to become a multimillionaire. he started legal action, for which BNP Paribas' defence was that he could have found out how much he had in fact inherited by asking any one of the other benefactors but that was rejected by the Supreme Court of Spain, who ordered the bank to pay him compensation in the sum of 230,114€ but he had to pay back his loan of 120,000€, as this was declared null and void, and return all the goods he had bought on hire purchase.

ASHES TO PRIZES! Win your own funeral! A FUNERAL parlour on the Costa del Sol has launched a prize draw with a difference, the winning ticket entitles the bearer to a free funeral. The centre, in Benalmádena, which normally deals with people after the curled their toes, is offering the prize winner to donate their winnings to another person if they wish. So far, 450 people have purchased draw tickets including Brits,

Spaniards and other nationalities with the only criteria being that entrants are over the age of 55, but fortunately, there is no time limit on claiming your free funeral once the winning ticket is drawn next. As we all know and fear, even a basic funeral can cost thousands of euros, meaning that a family, that has a members die who and has no assets to pay for the ceremony, can find themselves in severe financial trouble which is the main reason the funeral parlour decided to run the draw.

MIDDLE EAST CRISIS BOOSTS SPANISH TOURISM

By Jake Monroe The unrest in Northern Africa is bringing holiday makers closer to home. Spain is getting a boost to its hugely important tourist industry as northern European sun seekers shun popular resorts in Egypt and Tunisia because of anti-government uprisings there. Spain has struggled in recent years to compete with beach destinations in Egypt's Red Sea and Tunisia's Mediterranean coast which are cheaper and of a similar flying distance from its key markets like Germany and Britain. But since the unrest sweeping the Arab world began in Tunisia in early January, tourists have been changing their travel plans, and Spain, especially the Canary Islands which are situated just off the coast of Morocco, has been one of the main beneficiaries. Spain received 2.66 million foreign tourists in January, a 4.7 percent increase over the same month last year and the first rise in 18 months, the industry and tourism ministry said last week. The Canary Islands attracted the most tourists. It was the destination of choice for 866,476 foreign visitors last month, a jump of 8.8 percent. "We have benefited in a way from the crisis in Egypt and Tunisia because it has diverted tourists from those countries, especially to the Canaries," Tourism Minister Miguel Sebastian said after the figures were released."This should not, however, be the goal of our policy. Our policy is to boost competitiveness and improve the promotion of Spain abroad, especially in the tourist market countries of the future like

A MAN from Mislata (Valencia) says he is paying four-figure mobile phone bills for a man in Cartagena he has never even met. The man whose bills have been paid for him said he thought he must have won some kind of prize or special offer when his telephone credit had not run out for four months, having received what turned out to be a ‘spam’ text message saying he had won some money. When he checked with the telephone company, he found out the phone had been switched to a contract from a payas-you-go scheme without his consent. Meanwhile elsewhere, Luis Fernando Ramón, 56, from Mislata, had received four telephone bills in as many months totalling 1,000€, which included extra expenses and Ramón insisted he used his mobile only when necessary and paid his bills religiously. As we know dealing with phone companies here is no fun and whilst attempting to get the telephone company to rectify the error – something he is still waiting for – Miguel Moreno, 58, from Cartagena had been calling the company repeatedly to ask for his number to be switched back to a pay-as-

Russia, China and India from where we still receive few tourists." Tourism operators’ estimate up to 300,000 extra visitors may come to the archipelago for the winter season which ends in late April, according to the regional government of Canary Islands. Other regions are also getting a boost, especially the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean whose resorts, like those in the Canaries, tend to offer all inclusive packages like those in the seaside resorts of Tunisia and Egypt. "The countries that have benefited most from the situation in Egypt are Spain, with bookings to the Balearics up 30 percent yearon-year, and Greece, up 20 percent," the head of Europe's second-largest tour operator Thomas Cook, Manny FontenlaNovoa, said in an e-mail. Online flight search engine WhichBudget.com reports a "significant increase" in flight searches to Spain since the protests began while searches to Tunisia have plunged by 50 percent and By Jake Monroe those to Egypt by 30 percent. Barcelona saw the largest rise in flight searches last Tobacco sales last month month, a 22 percent increase, followed by Tenerife in the Canaries with a rise of 12 percent, it said. Both Egypt and Tunisia are mostly calm for now but fears persist that unrest could return is likely to deter many visitors in the short term. The deputy general director of Spanish tourism board Turespana, Alvaro Blanco, said tourists were being "lent" to Spain from Egypt and Tunisia and the country needed to work to win their business for the future. "These are tourists who at best would not have chosen Spain if they had not been forced to change their plans due to a crisis in these two nations. We need to show them now that Spain is a safe destination that is nearby," he said. Spain slipped from third to fourth place among the world's most visited countries in 2010, behind France, the United States and China, according to figures from the UN World Tourism Organisation.

you-go line. He refused to just ditch the phone saying, “I am not going to stop using it simply because, through the operator’s own fault, another customer is paying the bills. It’s our family phone and we need to use it. It’s up to the company to sort this out,” Finally at the end of January, Miguel’s phone was finally switched back to a pay-as-you-go and his credit at last ran out a few days later. With a smile he added, “Hopefully they’ll now stop charging my calls to poor Luis”.

TOBACCO SALES DROP DRAMATICALLY fell by more than 32 percent compared to December, according to government

figures, after Spain’s new anti-smoking law took effect on January 2. For the first time, the number of packets sold in one month dropped under the 200-million benchmark to 194,770,461 in January, figures from the Treasury’s Tobacco Industry Commission reveal. The sudden declines took the National Smoking Prevention Committee (CNPT) by surprise, which had expected falls between four and five percent since the ban on smoking in public places went into effect. Rodrigo Córdoba, CNPT spokesman, said that among the factors for the sudden drops is that many bars and restaurants have gotten rid of cigarette vending machines

editor@thecourier.es Say it. Send it. Phone it. Mail it. or Forget it! CONGRATULATIONS! To all the team on the COURIER, I have just finished reading (from cover to cover) the first edition of your brilliant new paper. As you have promised, it made me smile. Particularly the 'Load of Bull' section. I love the layout and type of print, and found it very easy to read. The Spanish news was informative and helpful and having a little bit of UK news thrown in too was good. The entire paper was absolutely lovely and so pleasant to read. All in all, I don't think you will have a problem competing with the others because it really is a bloomin' good read ' !!! Well done! Regards Lin Gossage

difficulties encountered spelling a whistle! My wife and I acquired our "Sam" from SAT's rescue centre in Dolores. As they have many dogs to care for and house, they would need to refer to 'Sam the German Shepherd' in order to differentiate. This is how the naming process came to be for all of us humans, from roughly the middle of the 14th Century. Sam living with a greater number of dogs would be known as Sam Shepherd or Sam German. We are now attempting to communicate in English, to a German Shepherd of Spanish Nationality. GG If you are going to be talking in dog-tongue, you’d better make sure he removes it from his backside first…

Kind attention of Dave Bull, BARKING MAD

Hi to the Editor, My name is Grahame Green and I escaped from Essex about six years ago. I have been trying to ease all comers into laughing at the things that parents, teachers and subsequent employers tried to convince us all of from day one. Basically "Sit down and be Serious!" If as a youngster you had the audacity to be amused by anything, you would be viewed as a disobedient child, with a foot on the road to rebellion, with an order to "Wipe that smile off your face!" History was serious and all about interbred Kings and Queens who fell out, and engaged in Wars, like families do. If that wasn't daft enough we all had to remember the dates for exams, without the self-inflicted, informative and temporary arm tattooing! Bach didn't do classical music; he did 'Serious Music!' It was never, listen at leisure, you might even like some of it. More like, "Don't even think of going near my Hi-Fi with your grubby little Rolling Stones records!" Art was an experience for the elite, because the likes of us hadn't the necessary intellect to understand the artist's motivation. An Artist isn't a special kind of person... Every person is a special kind of Artist! Even Golf and Tennis were beyond reach, thinking outside of your 'station in life' as you peered through the fence. The fact that you were only waiting for the leggy lady in the white skirt to bend down and pick up the stray ball, wasn't even considered... Thankfully. So, convinced of your insignificance, you were 'seen and not heard', apart from the calling of the morning register. This is where you got the chance to assert your stifled personality. Miss Thomas said "Green?" You timidly replied "Yes Miss" and that was it regarding verbal interaction. Later, in the School Report she would write "A very shy member of the class." So, my name was my only identity, which we should consider carefully when our turn at naming arrives. For instance, if you decided to make an addition to your family, by way of a dog, you should work through the process of 'suitably' naming the beast, with other members of your family. The need for a dog to have a name is really only for identification and welcoming purposes. Whilst performing country 'walkies' you can call your dog by his name, or whistle maybe, in order to affect his prompt return to heel. A name being preferred by the vet for passport registration, due to

Congratulations on number 1 of "The Courier". Did wonder where you had gone Dave, and, equally important, where you would surface next time, and here you are! I guess with printer’s ink, coursing through your veins, it would be in communication! Should you be interested in any of my jottings from "The Boards", and / or, happenings down here on the South Costa Blanca would be more than please to send copy down the line, for consideration to grace the pages of "The Courier"! Look forward to raising a glass with you and the team on the occasion of edition 100!

HI Courier, After picking up one of the couriers yesterday, just to say that im very impressed. It’s just like a proper newspaper, at last!!! I run the Royal Oak in El Galan (near to Rendezvous) and would be happy to be a distributor. Regards On their way…man with no name…

SKINNY BIRD I quite enjoyed your 1st issue except for a couple of things. Fancy commenting (this is article about thongs) and I quote and they think they look like Kate Moss. Well hopefully not there are better looking legs (sparrow legs) hopping round my garden, anorexic springs to mind. 2nd. Issue "sport on the box”, chap on horseback of a middle of the table club, I say horseback it might be De Kuyt.!! Ok… to answer your comments in reverse order… 2. The ‘chap’ was Kenny Dalglish – facing up to the clubs biggest derby against Man United, so we thought as it was quite a big game we’d use that. And...1. So you’re overweight then…?

FROM MARCH 7TH SPEED LIMIT DOWN TO 110 KMPH By Sally Bengtsson Following my article last week it has now been confirmed by those in the know that Spain is to cut its motorway speed limit to 110km per hour from 120kph to save petrol following the rise in crude oil prices and fears of a supply crisis caused by upheavals in Libya and other Arab states. Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, deputy prime minister, announced the speed reduction – from March 7 – as one of the energy-saving measures agreed by ministers on Friday. The Spanish initiative suggests rising oil prices could have a direct impact on consumer behaviour beyond increases in the cost of living. The move recalls similar measures taken in some countries during the 1970s

oil crisis. The US reduced the speed limit on freeways to 55 miles per hour and Britain imposed a maximum of 50mph for a few months at the end of 1973. Mr Pérez Rubalcaba said the limit was temporary and would be linked to the duration of the “emergency situation” in North Africa. He insisted, however, that it was to save money rather than because of any expected disruption to fuel supplies in Spain. He said the change would cut consumption of petrol by about 15 per cent and of diesel by 11 per cent, in a country where every $10 rise in oil prices costs an extra €6bn ($8bn) a year. “We’re going to go slower and, in exchange for that, we’re going to use less petrol and we’re going to pay less money,” Mr Pérez Rubalcaba said. Alongside the lower speed limit, Spain will cut the price of commuter and short-distance rail tickets by 5 per

Speed limits are being reduced all over the country cent and increase the proportion of bio-diesel used in diesel fuel from a minimum of 5.8 per cent to 7 per cent. Spain has no substantial oil reserves of its own and is

almost completely dependent on imports for road transport, although a fifth of its electricity is generated by wind power. About 9 per cent of Libya’s

dents. • Another experiment was to increase cycle lanes and the width to be 3m and to give priority to cyclists. For those cyclists amongst you I thought the explanation by the Director General of Trafico on the following would be of interest. It is possible to legally transport a child up to the age of six on a cycle providing it has a seat designed to fit the cycle

and the cyclist is an adult. It is obligatory for both to wear a safety hat for all main roads but optional for other roads. It is recommended to wear reflective markings or clothing and for cycle lights to be fitted. Again I remind motorists that cyclists can ride two abreast and in groups and have priority over vehicles at unmarked junctions. By law the motorist must leave 1.5m space when overtaking. • The Police of Pilar are taking illegal parked cars off the streets and the Chief of Police is asking to be informed of any illegal parked car. The reason is that is an unnecessary danger to pedestrians and could encourage vandalism. The visible sign is no ITV or Baja (Sorn) which is the responsibility of the registered owner and not the driver. • The Police in San Vicente del Raspeig stopped 102 Vans and Lorries and found that there was no permission from the owner to the driver or no Fire Extinguishers or the tyres were not correct and following a desfavorable ITV report the vehicle had not been represented and one person driving while answering a mobile phone. The

oil exports went to Spain before the revolt began against Gaddafi, the Libyan leader. Repsol, the Spanish oil company, was among the energy groups forced to shut down production in Libya this week. The socialist government’s measures are unlikely to be popular with motorists. Wealthy Spaniards routinely flout speed limits and often boast large, US-style SUVs, even for urban driving. The debate over the government’s move to reduce the highway speed limit has gathered pace in recent days. Speaking from Qatar, Prime Minister Zapatero said he was sure Spaniards would support the measure, as they had previously backed the government’s points system that had led to improved road safety. Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba toed a different line. “We don’t think it will improve road safety, strictly speak-

ing, but it will affect consumption and save energy,” he said. Drivers associations have warned the measure may actually increase accidents on Spanish roads. This was the case when the speed limit was dropped to 100 km/h during the 1976 oil crisis. Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has also publically disagreed with the move. The Popular Party spokesman Esteban González Pons described the scheme as “Soviet” — and said alterations to 6,000 road signs would cost 250,000 euros. “It’s just a case of putting up a sticker,” the Industry Ministry responded. A Valencian company is busy making the stickers as we go to print. The government estimates the speed reduction will save almost 1.5 billion euros in oil imports, but that will be offset by a loss of 500 million euros in tax income.

counsellor for traffic Jose Vicente Alavé said that they will continue the campaign to achieve safe vehicles on the road. Other campaigns will continue to monitor speeding, dangerous driving as well as dangerous overtaking and driving too close. • Barcelona has restricted the 100 kms speed to 80 kms to reduce emissions contamination from vehicles (other municipals are said to follow suit). This is marked on the overhead gantry while the original 100 is still shown. So watch your speed! • Speed cameras are also fitted in crash barriers and road bollards and there are new timed distance cameras to access your speed over a given distance. Just announced on the T.V. was

that they have installed them on a long twisting tunnel by Madrid which I have travelled in and no one takes notice of the speed restrictions. The purpose of the speed limit is to prevent accidents which could be horrendous due to the containment of the tunnel and the risk of fire making it difficult for the emergency crews. The cameras are placed behind the entrance signs so you will not know which tunnels have this type of speed control. We have two similar tunnels locally, one around Alicante and the other at Lorca. The only way to know which antivirus product is the 'best' (and i would define best as being the one that spots the most viruses) is to ensure that you are up to date with all the various trials and comparisons that are being carried out all over the place all the time - not something most people have the inclination to do. Of the tests that I have seen recently Kaspersky comes out top in my opinion, although it is however a product that you have to pay for. In terms of the free products I still think that you can do a lot worse than AVG, however as an alternative, I also find that Microsoft Security Essentials is an excellent product so it's also worth a look, you can download the latest version of AVG from the link http://tinyurl.com/courier-avg or you can get hold of Microsoft Security Essentials from the link http://tinyurl.com/courier-MSSE

Question My AVG Antivirus says that I should upgrade - is it just trying to get me to buy the paid for version? Answer Yes and no....AVG are, of course a commercial company and would like you to purchase their premium products, however for what the large majority of us need for checking emails and browsing the Internet, their free product is more than adequate protection. You are entitled to use their free offering if you are using it for non-commercial use but from time to time AVG release new versions of their Antivirus products and it's at this point that we all tend to get messages on our computers about upgrading. You should always try to make sure that you are using the latest version - currently that's version 2011. If you are not on the latest v ersion then you need to upgrade. This is a simple process that involves downloading the latest version and following the screen prompts to install it. You can get the latest version at this link http://tinyurl.com/courier-avg

What's a SAI? How can I get Spanish letters from my English keyboard? There are a number of ways to get international characters onto your computer and many of them depend on the software you are using (I.e. Microsoft Word, etc). The method that I describe here will work with ANY software, so it's probably the best to mention here. It involves using the ALT key on your keyboard in conjunction with the number keys to create the characters you want, so for example to get the Spanish Ñ letter you press down the ALT key and whilst holding it type in 0209 on the number keys, then release the ALT key and hey presto you have the Ñ Numeric keypad International Codes á é í ñ ó ú ü ¿ «

In the UK we call it a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) in spain it's called a SAI (Sistema de alimentación ininterrumpida). It's basically a battery that sits between your computer and your power supply both filtering out any harmful power spikes and providing power to your computer in the event of a power failure. They are usually rated by how long they are able to provide power

for after a power failure, however it clearly all depends on how much you have plugged into it. It’s good practice to only plug in the essential things (PC or laptop, monitor and Internet router for example) as this way you will get the longest protection possible. More expensive UPS also have a facility that will shut down your computer in the event of a power failure just before the battery runs out, keeping your computer safe even if you are not at home.

TKO DJ PROFILE ANDY JAMES The TKO FM breakfast boy is the longest serving breakfast show host on the southern Costa Blanca and definitely the most popular and successful. So where did it all start for the young(ish) man from Kent? Well, young Andy started his career in music whilst still at school, helping out at the Friday lunchtime disco! Andy, along with his brother and a friend, then went on to buy a mobile disco and, at the age of 17, took to touring Kent, every weekend, spinning the 45s and 12 inches. This was Andy´s lot for many years and it gave him many opportunities to play holiday camps, in a dungeon near London Bridge and even work with Kiss FM. This led to Andy´s first job as a radio presenter, on a local station in Medway, however, much to his disgust he had to play what he was told! Upon his move to Spain Andy was snapped up by the then fledgling TKO FM and was promptly given his own breakfast show. Since his arrival

Andy and Mrs James have had two lovely children and are now settled residents in the Kingdom of Algorfa! Of course, anyone who knows AJ is aware of his aversion to playing gigs without his beloved CD’s and, as he lugs all his cases up and down the coast, is more than happy to provide a “proper” DJ service, without a laptop or mouse in sight! Andy says he is enjoying his earlier time slot of 8am -11am and often has to play catch up, as his show always has high audience participation. He has just celebrated his 6th anniversary with TKO and is proud to still be a part of the most successful station here on the Costa Blanca. Andy says “I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone for making my show the success it is and that our lovely listeners make every day a joy to come to work” You can listen to Andy every weekday morning from 8am – 11am and every Tuesday at 8pm as he presents the Old School Disco.

SHE’S GOT A TICKET TO RIDE! Adele Matches 46 Year Old Beatles Record diately afterwards. The last time that living artists had two top five singles and albums at the same time on the British chart was January 1964, when the Beatles had the top two album places via "With the Beatles" and "Please Please Me," and were Nos. 2 and 5 respectively with the singles "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You." How the actual unit numbers compare has not been commented on and one would suspect that The Beatles sales will have been considerably higher. That shouldn’t detract from the phenomenal achievement by one of the finest young singer songwriters to come out of the new wave of successful female artists

Adele has matched the Beatles record, with her latest release. The singer, whose second album '21' is number one in the albums chart, has become the first living artist since The Beatles in 1964 to have two singles and two albums in different UK Top Five charts. Her latest single 'Rolling in

the Deep' and her debut album ‘19’ both sit at Number Four in their respective charts. "Someone Like You" raced up 47 places, after she performed it at the BRIT Awards on February 15th WHEN almost all of the live performances at the show were made available for download at iTunes imme-

and at such a young age, she has certainly proved that talent is something you are born with. Adele’s star is shining bright, currently and, with her smoky, characterful voice and her undoubted songwriting ability she is hot property. Tour promoters have already had to move some of her gigs to larger venues and put more dates on, as demand for tickets has rocketed. This also applies to her American dates, which is a real coup for the twenty one year old. The Grammy winning singer is also the one that many of the big hitters want to duet with. Although it is only March we predict that Adele will enjoy even greater success as the year progresses.

Horoscopes Dear Tia Maria. I have been in Spain 2 years now and my husband seems to have settled really well. I like it but I miss my family and especially the grandchildren terribly and I don´t think I will ever be happy here. I have told my husband how I feel and he says he will never return to the UK to live. My husband plays golf and I am alone so much. What can I do?

MISSING MY FAMILY

Kath, Algorfa Tia Maria says: It is very difficult to settle in a foreign country, especially when you have family ties still in the UK. Many people do not realise that when they come here they are leaving all their support system behind, such as friends and family, and this can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation, even when you have a partner. Your husband has a hobby that is occupying his time and helping him to meet people. If

golf is not for you, have you thought about other clubs

and activities that might interest you more? Maybe

some voluntary work or a part-time job? I am sure that if you could get out and meet people and build up a wider social circle you would feel less isolated. Although you will always miss your family, keeping busy will prevent you becoming overwhelmed and depressed. If returning to the UK to live is not an option, what about making sure you return on a regular basis so you don´t feel the loss of them so keenly? Plan your trips well in advance to get bargain flights and so you have something to look forward to. It often takes several years to settle properly, but if as time goes on you are still unhappy you must speak again to your husband. In fact, it is important that you always communicate the way you feel to him in a level rather than emotional way so you do not become alienated from each other.

FIGHT AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ‘STRONG’…ON PAPER

While domestic violence in Spain is becoming more and more visible, the country’s laws and justice system are still proving to be weak instruments to fight it, according to experts from different fields who are demanding further legal reforms to address the issue. The government of socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who took office in 2004, passed a Law on Gender Equality, appointed women to key positions in the administration, created special courts and issued drastic instructions to crack down on domestic violence. But still the violence continues: between 2001 and 2010, 650 women were killed in domestic violence cases in Spain and just three years ago, 32 women were murdered in the first four months of 2007 and on one day alone four women were killed. But the courts are snowed under with cases and are shortstaffed, so prosecutions drag on for years and the progress in fighting domestic violence is also undermined by delays by judges and police in enforcing court sentences or orders, and the lenient treatment received by perpetrators in some cases, activists complain. One example was a court cut the prison sentence handed down to Colombian national Andrés Julián L. H., from 25 to 17 years, after he confessed to the crime with which he was charged: the rape of a 10-year-old girl, who became pregnant and had a baby as a result.

CIVILIZATION: IS THE WEST HISTORY? New series. Historian Niall Ferguson explores the West's rise to global dominance, and asks whether its ascendancy is coming to an end. LONG BALLS

All the action from the Premier & La Liga By Malcolm Palmer Football off the field is often at least as interesting as on it. And I’d love to ignore Gerard Piqué’s reported romance with Shakira – who said ‘lucky sod?’ Rayo Vallecano’s drive to return to the Primera Liga looks like being somewhat hampered by the fact that their players haven’t been paid for some time. Owners Rumasa are an enormous food and wine producing group, owning such marks as Clesa and Dhul, and their politically-motivated managing director and his henchmen are being investigated by the authorities – not for the first time. On a much sadder note, former Spurs, Southampton and Wolves defender Dean Richards has died at the tragically early age of 36, after a serious illness. On the field, Manchester United moved four points clear of the field with a comfortable win over leaky Wigan, but Wolves climbed out of the bottom three with a 4-0 win over in-and-out Blackpool. Villa and

Everton both had wins to stay in mid-table. At the top of the Championship, Swansea saw off the Leeds challenge, but Queens Park Rangers are well on the way to bringing topflight football to Shepherd’s Bush, winning well at hapless Middlesbrough. Sunday’s Carling Cup Final saw Arsenal’s schoolboy error hand the result (2-1) and an improbable trophy, to Birmingham City. Here, Arsenal’s next Champions’ League rivals, Barça, go marching on towards a successive league title, widening the gap to seven points over Real Madrid with a 0-3 win in Mallorca, whilst their rivals couldn’t find a goal to beat lowly Deportivo at the Riazor, their ‘bogey-ground.’ The show, however, is not over until………….

SPORTS ROUND-UP

GOBSMACKED!

With Mick Hardy from Kidease

Mouthy French always ready for a fight…until it starts

After this weekend of matches we once again have next week off before the fourth round of matches on the 12th March. This weekend saw England beat France 17-9 at Twickenham. It was a very hard game with both sides giving 100% in every tackle made. One of the main things in the game was the ball handling of both sides France more than England dropping the ball or making silly mistakes at in important areas of the field. The other matches saw Wales travel to Italy and come away we a 16-24 win and again Italy showing that they are hard to beat at home. Then Sunday saw Ireland beat Scotland at Murrayfield 18-21. The score looks close but Ireland cruise over for three tries and the Scots getting six penalties. After the game Scotland manager Andy Robinson was doing is normal thing blaming the match officials for the defeat? Just like when he was in charge of England. Cricket World Cup 2011 What is it about world cups and England team in football we struggle in the group stages and now cricket? What on paper looked a nice little opening game against the Netherlands turns in to a nail biter with the Netherland scoring 292 for 6 And then England just get home with 8balls left of their 50 overs to win by six wickets. Then what can be said about Sunday’s game against host nation and favourites India. The host batted first and amass 338 all-out in 49.5 overs what a total to chase for England which started well with Petersen in is new opener role with Strauss reaching 68 before Petersen lost is wicket. Trott came and went only adding 16 to is name. Then Bell and Strauss took the score

to 281 adding 170 for the third wicket. Then in the 43rd over Zaheer Khan got both of them out in Successive balls to but England back under pressure. Three more wicket fell quickly and it look like the match was going India’s way we England

needing 29 from 12 balls after only needing 67runs from the last 60 balls. Then the last over we needed 14 then down to 2 runs from the last ball which Swann got a single to tie the match. What a game 776 runs in 100 overs that great cricket. Now we have one of those should win easy games this week verses Ireland which England team will turn up for it? ANGEL’S RISING

moving up the table

Real Valladolid 2 v 0 Elche By Dan Smith Elche boss Jose Bordalas looked to build on his team’s last two successful outings; a thrashing of the mighty Betis away from home, following on with a week later a win in a nail biting and bruising encounter against Barcelona´s in-form youngsters. With a healthy 6 points in their last two games Elche went into last Saturday’s away fixture against Real Valladolid full of confidence. Elche hold the worst disciplinary record in the second division so it’s not surprising that the revitalized in-form Elche were to have several key players missing, midfield heavy weight Argentinean, Acciari, Samuel, Ripa, striker Palanca, and leading goal scorer Miguel Linares side-lined for the next 8 months with cruciate ligament knee injury he collected against Barcelona B the week previous. Real Valladolid, fellow promotion contenders, went in front on eight minutes after being awarded a dubious penalty, this early blow unsettled the visitors who

Continued from back page Tote almost got clear on 50 minutes, and Miku saw a yellow card for bringing him down. A couple of minutes later, Hercules should have scored when Juanra’s cross was headed across the goal by Thomert, but his somewhat static countryman, Trezeguet, could only head into Codina’s hands. He at least ran fast enough to go offside soon afterwards, then Cristian replaced Thomert. Portillo’s shot was bravely blocked by the madrileños’ keeper on 67 minutes, and Kiko replaced a very tired Tote, just after Miku headed over the bar for the visitors. Cristian was combining well with Tiago Gomes, then Juanra almost surprised Codina with a long-range effort. Gavilan was replaced by Arizmendi, and Pulhac was shown a yellow card for the home team. Getafe pressed hard, but Kiko’s centre caused a scramble in Getafe’s goalmouth – which Codina somehow palmed clear. Pulhac ‘saw red’ when he was given a second yellow card, but Getafe could do little with the free kick, as the referee blew the final whistle. Getafe’s famous manager, ex-Real Madrid star Michel, said after the match, ‘We’ll see you in the first division next season.’ I do hope so!

never got into their stride, a few low key chances and a disallowed goal just before half time gave them some hope for the second forty-five though. After the break Elche looked to be edging back in the game and should have been level after Angel came close. On 66 minutes, Elche´s odds improved when Valladolid´s Jodri received a direct red after hunting down Xumetra. Even with numerical advantage, Elche couldn’t find the grunt of the previous week’s success and with only 2 minutes on referee´s Miranda Torres watch, the home side went two up and Elche went home disappointed. This was the upset Elche boss Bordalas could least afford, leaving him just three days to prepare for Tuesday evening’s home game against Numancia.

Elche 1 v 0 Numancia Still wondering how they managed to concede six goals at home three days previously, the visitors, Numancia, were hesitant from the start. Elche, with key players Acciari, Ripa, Samuel and Palanca

back after suspension, made it clear that they were going to control the game and they did just that. The sparse crowd, due mainly to an early kick off and not being accustomed to midweek fixtures, were given an exhibition of fast flowing skilful football. It took the home side 39 minutes to get in front, a perfectly placed Palanca corner found small statured Angel rising above the watching Numancia defence to head past keeper Eduardo. Unbelievably this was the only goal in the game, the one-nil score line didn´t really do Elche justice, but the 3 points will serve them well in the play promotion playoff race. Tomorrow (Saturday) Elche travel to Alabcete the divisions penultimate team and the following Friday 11th March a home game with Cordoba, kick off 21hrs.

SAINT OR SINNER? ‘’when an 8 year old boy stands up to you and calls you `an hijo de puta´ its time to move on"

JUAN CARLOS RAMIREZ QUITS ELCHE CF Juan Carlos Ramirez, Elche´s financial savour finally bowed to fan pressure by quitting his post as a front line board member of Elche football club last Wednesday. Stern-faced Ramirez spoke to a packed pressroom explaining his reasons for quitting his post after only 18 months (as reported in The Courier last week). Ramirez came to the financially stricken club 18 months ago, investing 5.5 million euros, proposing a series of money saving

schemes that would see Elche back into the black for the first time in 20 years. Almost immediately Ramirez fell out of favor with the long standing Elche faithful over seating arrangements prior to the start of last season. This proved costly for the club as season ticket sales have since dropped to an all time low. He was also involved in signing several players before start of last season without the backing of the then manager, Claudio Barragan, causing a rift between them that

saw Barragan dismissed after 6 games. During the 25 minute press conference Ramirez said his decision for quitting came after fans protests became personal, saying "that when an 8 year old boy stands up to you and calls you `an hijo de puta´ its time to move on". In closing he said that he was leaving the club in a much more financially secure state than when he first arrived, and had just signed the bank transfers for the players and staff salaries that were 4 months in

arrears. Giving one of his very rare smiles he then thanked the media for their support in spite of the many differences an altercations during the last 18 months. Whilst Ramirez will be absent from the club, he explained that a trusted family member will be placed on the board of directors in order to monitor his 5.5 million euros investment. He is shortly to recover around a million after the recent sale of keeper Caballero and Ghanian Wakaso.

TIME TO START WIN NING Herc ‘drop’ points at home again leaving themselves plenty to do in the remaining games

Photo: Mark Welton By Malcolm Palmer A point was, as manager Esteban Vigo said after the game, better than none at all, and keeps the Alicante side’s head marginally above water. Their dreadful away record is such that they really need to win their home games, especially those against, shall we say, moderate opposition. And ‘moderate’ was a fair description of Getafe’s play, even though they had a good share of possession.

The visitors kicked off on a pleasant sunny evening in front of some 19,000 spectators, and immediately looked rapid on the break, Casquero bringing a good save from Calatayud after only two minutes. Farinos’s free kick almost found the head of David Trezeguet, and Pulhac had a good shot deflected for a corner. The latter was having a useful game, as was the strong-run-

ning Thomert on the left wing, but when Juanra sent a cross over, the Frenchman fired over the bar, in what was the best opportunity so far. Portillo, playing well, as was Tiago Gomes, had a good shot parried, then, when he bundled the ball into the net, he was ruled – correctly –

offside by the excellent Undiano Mallenco. Cala was forced to save from Colunga, and Gavilan also caused problems for the home defence. Diaz saw a yellow card for hand-ball, and then Colunga saw his shot hit Calatayud’s post after another quick Getafe breakaway. The first half had been even, and more of the same was on view at the start of the second, when Getafe replaced Rios with Manu.
