WISH YOU WERE HERE

“UntOUcHablE” kIllER gEtS REtURn tIckEt tO jaIl By ALEX TRELINSKI A convicted British killer wanted by UK authorities was left ruing his boastfulness after posting a picture of where he was staying on the Costa Blanca, only for the police to pop up and arrest him.

The picture that tracked him down

33 year old murderer, Scott Kelly skipped probation after being let out on license last October for stabbing a pub drinker. But rather than keep a low-profile, the cocky criminal posted snaps on social networking sites, including pictures of himself enjoying a skiing holiday and others showing him relaxing in bars and restaurants with friends. He was careful to evade detection by making sure there were no landmarks in the background, but his arrogance came to a sudden halt last month. Kelly, who knifed Stephen Rank in the back during a row in a bar in Exeter, Devon, thought it would be clever to post a picture of a beautiful sunset in Alicante, but eagle-eyed UK

detectives manage to piece together clues from the photo such as the palm-tree lined promenade and distinctive architecture, which led them to identify where the fugitive was staying! They then put in a call to their Spanish colleagues, who then spotted Kelly driving around the Costa Blanca and promptly arrested him. He was held on a European Arrest Warrant and extradited back to the UK this week and sent back to prison. Detective Inspector Paul Fell of the South-West Englandbased organised crime unit Zephyr said it was the first time his unit had brought back a crook from Spain via a European Arrest Warrant. He said: "We were able to point the Spanish police in the right direction. It was then up to them how they wanted to proceed. They don't like having British criminals living on the Spanish coast believing they are immune from the authorities so they were more than helpful. Once we had got the warrant they were very keen to detain him”. "I am sure that Scott Kelly went to Spain and was living the high life thinking he was untouchable. Many more may feel the same - but they are not.

The National Police have arrested 54 alleged paedophiles including a Murcia-based British teacher who filmed and shared footage of young girls in public toilets. One of the accused is a physiotherapist who reportedly put a hidden camera in his practice's lavatory. The arrests were carried out in 12 regions, including Murcia, Alicante and Valencia. All of the accused had access to footage of young girls under the age of 13 through Peer to Peer file sharing. The National Police say that a 40 year old male British English language teacher who works at a Murcia college has been accused of possessing and distributing child pornography which is punishable by a jail stretch of up to four and a half years. Other arrests in the region were made in Lorca and Alhama de Murcia, whilst there were three detentions in unspecified areas of Alicante Province and five in Valencia Province. Two men are thought to have filmed the majority of the footage after installing hidden cameras in womens toilets. One device was placed in a leisure centre and another one in a physiotherapy practice by the medical professional in charge. Police are currently investigating the file sharing network to determine if there are any other suspects involved.

Three more people showing Ebola-like symptoms have been hospitalised in Madrid, bringing the total to six, one of whom is Teresa Romero, the nurse who was infected with the virus. More than 50 other people are being monitored by authorities, as anger has spread about how Romero was able to contract Ebola.

The nurse told a radio station on Wednesday that she was starting to feel better, and gave a startling account of how she found out she was infected through reading a news article on her mobile phone. Romero, an auxillary nurse who offered voluntarily to work with the Ebola infected priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, said that medical staff were given some basic training on how to put on and take off the protective suits. Romero is the first person to have contracted Ebola in Europe and her home was disinfected on Wednesday to ensure it was Ebola-free. Later that day, a dog belonging to Romero and her husband was put to sleep with authorities, much to the anger of animal welfare groups, saying it posed a biological risk and there was evidence dogs could carry the virus.

QUICK RESPONSE

Orihuela civil fire protection teams were called in to deal with 122 incidents over the summer. The first responders were brought in a few years ago to help out the authorities during the holiday season with one unit based on the coast and the other in Orihuela city. The teams dealt with two wildfires as well as 25 bush fires.

SLOWER TORRY

Drivers will have to take their foot off their gas in some parts of Torrevieja under plans to introduce a 30 kms an hour speed limit. After a recent road safety conference in the city, Torrevieja Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, unveiled El Plan Zona 30, which is aimed at cutting down accidents and reducing harmful carbon emissions. The plan is scheduled to come into force early next year and will make parts of the centre more pedestrian-friendly, though, as Dolon emphasised, not into a traffic-free area.

NO SURPRISE

Meteorologists have confirmed that the first three weeks of temperatures for September on the Costa Blanca were the warmest since records began in 1859. Overall for the month, the region had an average high of 25.2 degrees C, making it the eighth warmest September in 155 years, and the warmest since 1990.

BOOZY DRIVE A drunk driver started playing dodgems with a whole deck of parked cars in the centre of Torrevieja before being bundled away the police and taken to Torrevieja Hospital. The Lithuanian man was speeding through the vicinity of the Virgen del Carmen Centre in the La Punta area and hit 13 vehicles, in addition to a terrace, as well causing panic amongst horrified pedestrians. Remarkably only minor damage was reported with sources saying that the man was heavily intoxicated and perhaps somewhat unsurprisingly failed a breath test at the scene.

GUESS WHAT?

There’s no prospect of an immediate opening date for Murcia’s Corvera Airport, with the latest hitch now being a request from the European Commission for more details on the regional government’s loan to the airport management firm, Aeromur. The EC was expected to rule this month, but this new delay in the deliberations is expected to be at least two months, with the officials looking into the loan and also issues surrounding compensation to the San Javier airport operator, AENA. Despite all this and the fact that new and existing air routes need six months’ notice of changes, Murcia’s Public Works minister, Manuel Campos, has declared that he is now looking at April for an opening date for the Corvera facilities, but then added quickly that the government was “looking at a second option”. Campos has already this year given a variety of opening dates for Corvera that have come and gone.

DON’T PRESS DEATH RIDDLE ZE BUZZER A Los Montesinos teenager is hoping to hit the big time after being four “Yes” votes on the German TV version of Britain’s Got Talent (Das Supertalent). Four “Ja”s were the order of the day for talented-singer Stefanie Lohse in the live audition process, who is now sweating to see whether she will get a callback after wowing the judges and audience with her version of “In the Arms of the Angel”. In the meantime, the 16 year old will be performing at the Escuela Musica in Los Montesinos on Friday November 7th.

LONG STRETCH

Three people from the Murcia region charged with the murder of a Dutch volleyball star and her partner face jail terms of 50 years. The bodies of Ingrid Visser and Lodewijk Severin(pictured together) were found buried in a shallow grave in a lemon grove close to a house in Alquerías, some 12 kilometres from Murcia, in May last year. They had been brutally beaten. The prosecutors have now completed their investigation into the murders and are calling for a 25 year jail term for each killing, ANP said. The killings are said to be the result of business conflict between Visser and Severein and Juan Cuenca. Cuenca and two Romanians face murder charges, while the owner of the lemon grove faces three years in jail for keeping quiet about the killings.

YOUNG BLIGHTERS

Four teenage children have been arrested for robbing a home in the El Mirador area of San Javier. The youths aged between 14 and 16 stole from an El Mirador log cabin, with the Guardia Civil filing a report to the childrens court, whilst the youngsters stay under the supervision of their parents.

Six Cartagena coppers have been collared in connection to the death of a 43 year old man in March. The National Police officers were arrested as part of an investigation of how and why Thomas Diego Perez vanished, and his body found later with clear evidence that he had been beaten up. A family member, who lived with the man, reported him missing on March 13th, and then a fortnight later, his body was found floating in the Cala Cortina, Cartagena. The six arrested were all in patrol cars at the same time, with some speculation that the last time the victim was seen alive was when he got into one of the police cars, and was roughedover by the young officers before being thrown into the sea. The investigation is being carried in secret under the auspicies of the Cartagena court.

ROW BAR NONE

The dispute over the awarding of beach bar contracts for the Orihuela Costa is not going away, with the Public Prosecutor investigating whether there are any merits to the claim from three businessmen that the Orihuela council renewal of the franchise to Chiringuitos del Sol was corrupt. The company was belatedly given the new contract earlier this year despite owing nearly one million euros to the authority, and in spite of other bidders being interested in the franchise, though they did not pass the council’s “quality threshold”. The prosecutor has asked the council to provide all the necessary documents over the matter.

HIGH ENDED

The Guardia Civil have smashed an 18 strong gang that specialised in stealing and selling-on high-end cars around Spain and abroad. Two workshops were based in the Murcia region, and a third in Madrid, with 24 luxury cars being seized along with 100 thousand euros in cash, in addition to a variety of equipment. 15 of those arrested were Spaniards, along with a Romanian, a Syrian, and a Moroccan. The cars were destined for France, Portugal, and even as far as Paraguay, with the gang already working on expanding their operations into Eastern Europe.

SANTIAGO HORROR WHAT A WASTE

A man told a Cartagena court this week that he was so high on drugs that he could not remember strangling his aunt and uncle at their Santiago de la Ribera home in December 2012. Jose Miguel RC (pictured left) went to his relative’s house claiming to have had three days without sleep and having taken a cocktail of drugs including LSD, ecstasy, and amphetamines. Prosecutors have called for 46 years behind bars for the defendant who is accused of using a dressing gown cord belonging to his 82 year old uncle to strangle both him and his 83 year old bedridden wife. The accused admits to then removing the gold rings and watch that his uncle was wearing, the ring from his aunt’s bedside table and other jewellery in the house, as well as the television. These items were all found later.

The Spanish government is to shell out 1.35 billion euros to a firm which was forced to stop work on a vast underwater gas-storage project that was suspected of causing minor quakes. Known as Project Castor, the scheme aimed to store gas in a depleted oil reservoir 1.7 kilometres under the Mediterranean Sea in the Gulf of Valencia and send it via a pipeline to Spain's national grid. The government halted operations in September 2013 after more than 200 minor earthquakes were detected in the area which geologists and environmentalists blamed on gas injections. The company which owns and operated the facility, Escal UGS, said in June that it was giving up its concession for the gas storage project, which was financed by the European Investment Bank.

HAPPY IGUANA DUAL GO-AHEAD

Rescuing iguanas isn’t necessarily high on the priority list for the Guardia Civil, but that’s what officers were called into do when one was spotted recently on a roundabout in the Sant Joan area of Alicante City. Apparently the owner stopped their car and let the iguana loose up into some palm trees, before driving off. Officers had a few attempts at coaxing the reptile down before animal protection staff executed the final rescue.

Torrevieja is to get money to upgrade the N332 blackspot around the city into a dual-carriageway, in addition to converting the CV95 Los Balcones road into a dual carriageway by Torrevieja Hospital. The projects are to be funded by 15 million euros from the National Government in Madrid which is being budgeted for over three years between 2015 and 2018.

NOT SO SLEEPY SHORES

18 people were rescued by the maritime patrols from Torrevieja's local police over the summer as they were called into action close to 800 times. They dealt with a variety of issues from speeding and illegal fishing through to the unauthorised dumping of materials on the Torrevieja shores.

FALSE ECONOMY

The UK Department of Health has produced a new video warning about the folly in living in Spain without having the right sort of healthcare, if any at all! Britons coming to Spain to live permanently, as well as those who have recently arrived, must register properly with the Spanish authorities to ensure they are fully protected by the country’s state health system. But many expatriate Britons don’t get round Pilar de la Horadada's to it and, as Mr Thomson finds out in the video Mayor, José Fidel Ros, wants “Moving to Spain? Think about Healthcare!”. FLOODS OF WORRY

LOCAL FLAVOUR

If you’ve become a fan of Spanish food whilst you’ve been living here and have always wanted to cook some great local dishes for yourself, then you might want to sign up for a new course that starts this Monday(October 13th). The sessions, which last for a total of 25 hours, have been organised by La Asociación Vega Baja Acoge(Vega Baja Welcomes) and will take place at the Orihuela campus of the Universidad Miguel Hernandez. The course is totally free and more details can be obtained by phoning the Association on 966 745 731.

KEY RULING

Thousands of Britons who were duped into buying illegally built properties in Spain have been offered fresh hope after four British families were awarded more than 150 thousand euros in landmark in a landmark ruling, An Almeria court ruled the families bought the properties in good faith. It ordered the developers to pay "moral damages" of between 40 and 50 thousand euros to three families for suffering and anxiety they have faced over the last 10 years. They must also pay a fourth British family, whose property was never completed, nearly eight thousand euros in damages to cover their rental costs. Courts have stopped houses being knocked down before, but this is understood to be the first time a court has awarded compensation to cover the owners' ordeals. Thousands of British expats and holiday makers bought Spanish properties in the late Nineties and early 2000s. Many subsequently found their holiday and retirement dreams shattered when it emerged the homes were illegally built by unscrupulous developers and agents who did not have planning permission. Many home owners have faced

the threat of demolition, while others have had no power because their homes were not officially recognised, so were not on the grid. After years of legal wrangling the judge in this case ruled that the properties could not be demolished, as there is a chance they may be properly regulated in the future. Two developers were each sentenced to a year in prison for planning offences.

DEAD LUCKY A 67 year old driver was cheated death after his car went over the edge at Cala de la Higuera in Torrevieja last Thursday night (October 3rd). Two local police officers went into the water to get the man out of the vehicle and he was taken to Torrevieja hospital suffering from respiratory failure, multiple injuries, and hypothermia

RACE WITH A VIEW

San Pedro del Pinatar hosted the second running of the Correlimos (Sandpiper) races last Sunday with the Natural Park being the perfect backdrop for the 500 plus competitors. There were junior and children’s sections based at the port, with two main races of just over seven and 13 kilometres for the grown-up’s talking them around the park.

CATRAL CALLING

IKEA SUITOR

A new fibre optic network for Catral has been officially opened by the town's Mayor, Pedro Zaplana. The services offering internet, phones, and TV have been provided by Skynetlink, with Zaplana saying that the network was a major telecommunications boost for the area.

Elche’s Mayor, Mercedes Alonso, says that she would love to have the Swedish multinational furniture company, IKEA, come to her city if things go against it in its plans to open a store in Alicante City. Alonso admitted that contacts had been made with IKEA over the possibility of it locating to Elche because of its good communications and proximity to rail and air connections. She tempered her remarks by saying that nothing had changed in the last year over the firm opening premises in Alicante, but added that Elche was ready if a hitch happened like the current delay over granting the necessary permits.

CAMELOT COURT CLOSURE

Santa Pola’s Camelot night club is be converted into a new supermarket, after 25 years in business. The venue will close at the end of the year blaming increased competition as well road closures and a lack of a pedestrian crossing had all contributed to its demise.

CALA CLEARERS

Close to 150 volunteers got their hands dirty by helping clean up Torrevieja’s Cala Ferris area last Sunday. 50 youngsters also joined in the day which emphasised the importance of a clean environment with bags of glass and plastic being collected, amongst more surprising items like car shock absorbers and even a message in a bottle written in English!

editor@thecourier.es editor@thecourier.es COuRIER POSTBaG: yOuR VIEwS ON OuR NEwS

THE PRICE OF LIFE A 64 year old friend of mine suffered a heart attack on September 20th whilst sitting in a bar at Via Park 3. Two nurses who happened to be there tried to resuscitate him whilst the bar owner called the local police, who then frantically called the ambulance, telling it to hurry up. Because this ambulance was coming from outside the Orihuela Costa, he could not find the address and so a police car was sent to guide them to the location. It arrived some 25 minutes after my friend had suffered the attack. The crew managed to resuscitate him and he was taken to Alicante Hospital for surgery and then transferred to Torrevieja Hospital. He was there until Wednesday October 1st in a coma and vegetated state due to the time it took the Ambulance to arrive, with his brain suffering from a lack of oxygen. That day, he was declared brain dead and his life support machine was turned off, leaving a widow and children to grieve. So why did it take the ambulance so long to get there and why was it from outside the area? Earlier this year, the Valencia Regional Health Authority scrapped night-time emergency ambulances for the Orihuela Costa to save money. A spokeswoman was reported to have admitted recently that “out of area” ambulances provided the nighttime cover for Orihuela Costa. But the area has more registered residents compared to other parts of the Vega Baja:twice as many as Guardamar as example, who have full cover, as well as Pilar de la Horadada down the road. The Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer was reported recently as saying “ Orihuela Council had asked the Regional Health Authorities when the decision was made to cut the night service, but to no avail. No further action has been taken by the council to lobby the Regional Authorities and none is currently foreseen.” Why not Martina? Although the Health Service is the competence of Regional Authorities, some smaller town halls such as Pilar de la Horadada have contracted their own Ambulance service. Pilar’s Mayor Fidel Ros was reported as saying that the council pays around 300 thousand euros a year for the service, which is available all day and includes a driver and

nurse specialised in emergency care. This means that the Valencia Authorities are saving around 150,000 euros for the 12 hours of no night-time service to Orihuela Costa but this is not about money. It is about the contempt shown us! Based on the above information I have calculated the cost to Orihuela City Council if they were to provide this service at 300,000€ divided by 32,530 residents, the cost would be just 9.22€ per person per year, less than 10€ to possibly save a life! But, would they do it? The answer is a big no!! They would prefer to spend 320,000 euros of tax payers money (half of which was probably raised from the residents of Orihuela Costa) on the eight Parks and Gardens in Orihuela City than save lives and yet again only recently the councillor for the coast when asked about the cleaning up of the rubbish in Orihuela Costa she was quoted as saying “there was no money available” and denies any knowledge of the monies that have recently been allocated for this project! Orihuela Costa has an ageing population of retired people from many countries including Britain and Ireland who all pay their taxes and contribute to the Spanish economy. If the Spanish citizens who have moved to

live in our countries were treated with the same contempt as we are in Orihuela Costa (which I am sure would never happen) there would be uproar. One final point is that the fact that the UK Government pays the Spanish authorities around four thousand euros per head per year for the health care of British subjects. I am sure the Spanish Authorities demand the same from other Countries in the EU. These governments should be made aware of the situation in Orihuela Costa and the fact that they are paying for a service which is not being provided by the Spanish Authorities. Michael R Jobbins La Florida Orihuela Costa

NO SHOCK NOT BOXING CLEVER

If as you say in your article of last week, “Electric Shock", that it is likely that electricity prices are set to rise, then it is hardly surprising. People who pay their bills are subsidising the many who feel it acceptable to steal the supply. If the supplier took a couple of weeks to investigate where the supply is going where no meters exist, then perhaps they could reduce prices and not make residents subsidise those who get the supply for free!! Why do the suppliers fail to install meters to all properties so the cost is shared equally? Your sincerely (in the dark) Peter, near La Marina.

Having read about the postal problems on the Orihuela Costa, can I say that the problems in reducing services from Correos extends far further across the region. In my area, door delivery services were curtailed over a month ago, and we now have 15 days to pick up mail from Elche, which to put it bluntly is quite inconvenient! We recently attended a meeting in La Hoya with other local residents to hear proposals from Correos chaired by a Mr.Miralles. It appears that Correos want residents to pay for the installation of post boxes and another fee for the construction and box housing. Where the boxes are to be stationed has still to be decided! My point is that it is Correos who have withdrawn the service and are set to make huge savings in the process. They should surely pay for their own initiative. Name and Address on file.

DOG KILLER SAINT GENERAL HORROR

A maverick Catholic church in southern Spain has shocked locals by erecting a statue of former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco with a halo. A non-official church in the Andalusian town of Utrera has decorated its façade with ten new flamboyant statues of ‘saints’, including an effigy of Spain’s former fascist leader, dressed in military gear and with a golden halo hanging over his head. El Palmar de Troya was built on the exact spot where the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared before four schoolgirls in 1968. Known as the Christian Palmarian Church of the Holy Face Carmelites, this branch of Catholicism was never recognized by the Vatican, leading to local accountant Clemente Domínguez proclaiming himself Pope Gregory XVII in 1978. BOXING CLEVER

I never throw away anything although the tyre repair receipt I have kept since 1977 does seem somewhat superfluous to my needs.

'That is you all over,' someone remarked the other evening. 'You just cannot get rid of stuff. Hoarding is by far the biggest of your many, many faults.' I gulped in fright. My heart was pounding as I realised that my house was occupied by a ghost. How else could one explain the disembodied voice I was hearing? 'Don't be stupid!' snapped Mrs S who had always been able to read my thoughts. 'It's me talking to you. You just can't see me because I'm standing behind this pile of cardboard boxes.' 'Phew!' I exclaimed. 'You really did give me a scare for one moment there, chuck. Now, tell me why we're having this conversation and please explain why you are hiding behind the pile of cardboard cartons.' Mrs S emerged from her place of concealment and said: 'I am not hiding! It's just that there is no room in this room to stand anywhere else!' I scratched my head, deep in thought. 'Got it!' I shouted eventually. 'If we remove the cardboard boxes, you shall have all the room you require. And by the way, which room are we standing in as we speak? I really cannot tell.' Mrs S sighed. 'I am talking to you this evening in what

used to be our spare bedroom. But over the years, you have turned it into a junk room. I would really like to return it to its original state but that can only be achieved if you remove the heaps of junk you, and you alone, have accumulated during

our blissful union.' 'Hmm,' I hmmed. 'I'd love to help you, darling, but such is the amount of what you term junk, but which I prefer to call souvenirs, you would need a humungous amount of cartons in which to place the stuff which could then be shifted into the garage.' And then the penny dropped. 'So that's what all the cardboard is about.' 'Congratulations,' said Mrs S. 'Now continue with your musings.' 'But my musings have ended,' I said. 'The stuff goes into the boxes which go into the garage and everything lives happily ever after.'

'Wrong,' Mrs S corrected me. 'The cartons stay in the garage until I order the skip and then everything -- and I mean everything -- is carted off, never to be seen again.' I gasped at Mrs S's cut-throat ruthlessness. 'Over my dead body!' I exclaimed. 'Easily arranged,' she shrugged. 'A chainsaw and a couple of extra boxes will more than take care of the problem.' Realising that I was getting nowhere, I decided to employ another weapon in my armoury, namely deflection from the matter at hand. Collapsing onto the floor, I assumed a sitting position and with a faraway look in my eye and in a deadpan zombie-type voice I said: 'Excuse me but does this bus go to Piccadilly Station?' 'Yikes! What's the matter with Dad? Is he ill?' asked my son who had popped round to help his mother shift the cardboard boxes into the garage. 'Don't be alarmed, Son.' said Mrs S. 'Your father has tried this on before. Only last time he asked if the bus was going to the shopping precinct.' I jumped to my feet and snapped: 'That's because it was a different bus on a different route. You are one hard woman, Mrs S.' I decided to adopt a philosophical attitude. As Mrs S and my son continued in their horrid task of stripping me of all my valuable memories, I clutched my chest and gasped: 'You'll all miss me when I'm gone.' 'Yikes!' yelled my son again. 'Dad really isn't feeling well.' 'Ignore him,' instructed Mrs S. 'The only place he ever goes to is the pub. And I never have time to miss him because he always flaming well comes back.' 'Rotten lot,' I mumbled and crawled into the only spare corner of the spare room to sulk. As my son carted the last cardboard carton into the garage and Mrs S phoned to order the skip, I gazed forlornly around at my now empty spare room. All that was left of my treasured belongings was a crumpled piece of paper. 'Hmm. This could come in handy one day,' I mused as I carefully uncrumpled it. I neatly refolded the old bus ticket from 1989 and started a new pile of personal souvenirs.

BALLOON BOOST GENEROUS CATRAL

Breast cancer awareness is going to be highlighted again this month as Zenia Boulevard puts on two days of entertainment with a variety of performers giving their services in aid of an important cause. The event is being staged on Saturday October 18th and Sunday October 19th, with a major partnership between Maria and the Pink Ladies and the shopping mall’s management team to commemorate International Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Last year an impressive sum of over 4100 Euros was raised for the AECC early detection programme, and once again a big highlight will be the release of around two thousand helium balloons, accompanied by Paul Michael singing Nessun Dorma, which will happen on the Sunday evening from 6.30pm. Many of the balloons will have a personal message attached to them in remembrance of a loved one who had lost their fight against cancer, and each balloon will cost two euros each, with a special prize of 100 euros for the furthest travelling card: - the winner last year came from Austria! Not far away, the new AECC office is open at the Flamenca Beach commercial centre on the ground floor and is open weekdays from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm for people to drop in for a chat or to book an early screening test. For more details about the charity and the Boulevard event, call 965 329 841.

DON’T BE SHY

The area’s leading male voice choir wants more guys to join them. The Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir, run by local professional singer, conductor and vocal coach, Nigel Hopkins, is offering any interested gents a chance to try out their vocal chords at an open rehearsal this Thursday October 16th at 11am at the Asturias Restaurante, Punta Prima to see what it involves. Experienced voice trainer, Nigel Hopkins, says that any man who can sing in tune (and that's most men!) can be taught to sing in chorus to a pretty high standard. He's proved it already on the Costa Blanca, so he’s appealing to shy guys to let themselves go, and to come along for a bit of fun and some free refreshments! For more details, call 966 775 976.

Andres and Ely put together a fun evening, combined with a collection and raffle to help local people living below the poverty lines. The raffle alone raised 140 euros alone top buy fresh chickens, in addition to essentials like rice, tuna, milk, pasta, and olive oil. For more details of the charity, call Helen on 634 355 607.

Money raised at a dinner and fun evening has been put to good use - to assist the disabled coming to the Help at Home Costa Blanca charity. The Quesada branch held the fun evening in which people had to pay forfeits for misdemeanours, such as not wearing a tie (or wearing one!) or speaking out of turn (or not speaking!). 460 euros was raised which has helped to buy two lightweight wheelchairs and cushions and a zimmer frame, plus other useful equipment. Pictured with the equipment are volunteers, Joan Waddington, Ann Thorogood, Ann-Marie Troup, Dorothy Pierce, Eileen Mayes (president), Erica Graham, Hazel Frost, Jacky Jones, Janette Fagg, Marlyn Isaac, Mona Eyre and Wendy Burton. Anyone willing to give a few hours of their time in Quesada and surrounding villages, or on the Orihuela Costa is asked to contact 693027026 or 965328794.

WAY IN HELP

It’s curtain up this Friday night (October 10th) for the antics of the staff of Grace Brothers in the musical version of Are You Being Served, as staged by the Campoverde Theatre Group. Three nightly performances are being put on at San Miguel’s Casa de Cultura, through till Sunday, with tickets available from Bargain Books in the town or by calling Colin on 966 774 127.

For the third year running a group of ladies calling themselves "The Way-In Club", held a coffee morning in aid of AECC Torrevieja, this year's figure of 1423 euros more than doubling the previous best of 653 euros. The money was again raised by selling home-made cakes and holding a successful raffle. Hospital volunteer Ann Bissett was there to collect the money on behalf of AECC from Caroline Richardson. She thanked everyone for their hard work, but also reminded the ladies of the need for regular breast cancer checks, which AECC can always provide.

ON ThE ROAd WiTh dOgS

I used to be involved in pet transport many years ago. Driving cats and dogs to and from Spain was a monthly occurrence for me and something I used to take great pride in and enjoy. A good friend of mine, Cindi Regan, of Rushton Dog Rescue, will be starting her own pet transport company in a few days time. I will be helping Cindi drive the animals to and from Spain and I am looking forward to getting back out on the road once again. Given my background as a dog behaviourist, I can settle the dogs down quickly, as can Cindi, so that they enjoy their journey. When it comes to the subject of dog welfare, Cindi bursts with passion. Her life is dogs, from the moment she wakes in the morning, to when she goes to bed at night. It’s dogs, dogs and more dogs! We came to know each other,

because we both run animal rescue charities and Cindi has rescued and re-

Cindi with Dudley homed hundreds of dogs successfully, throughout the years. So many people really worry about their pets while they are being transported, but as long as it is done correctly, it becomes a lovely experience for the

animal. Regular breaks and walks are important and people would be surprised to actually see how quickly their dogs settle into travel mode. Throughout all the time I was involved in pet transport, the longest it took a dog to settle into the journey was five minutes. As long as you understand a dog’s body language and what it is they need to become calm, the rest is a piece of cake. The best aspect was seeing the dogs enjoy their walks so much on route. You have to remember that each walk was in a different location and the dogs love that. Different smells, different places, they were

in their element. It was something I enjoyed very much and I am enthusiastic about helping Cindi with her transport business. If anyone is interested in what will be a very passionate pet transport service you can email Cindi direct at mail@rushtondogrescue.co.uk On a different note, Annie is a dog I rescued from a killing station, where she was 12 hours away from being put to sleep. She was the first dog I rescued after the death of my dear Mum and I called her Annie in memory of my Mum. Annie is a mixed breed dog, around the size of a Border Collie. She is six years old and has a lovely nature. It takes her a while to get use to you, but after a day or two she loves a cuddle and strokes. I do not know her background, but all I know is that she would make someone a lovely family dog. She is ready to travel anywhere in Europe as she has her pet

A MAJOR DECISION

I don´t mean to go on, and I know this is a subject that I have tackled before, many times, but perhaps it´s time for a refresher! The thing is, I had been single for a long time, a very long time, and recently I started a new relationship. I´m not anti-men or anti-partnerships; it´s just that it hadn´t happened for me for a while after my last relationship ended. When the father of my son finally went and I found freedom from the pain and terror I had experienced for so long, the last thing I wanted was a new man in my life. My focus was my son and building a stable foundation to grow here in Spain and to keep the dream alive. Even after everything that happened, my reasons for not wanting a man were nothing to do with my past; my mind-set just wasn´t ready, I had too much to work for, and too much to try and do before I could consider a new liaison. However when I was prepared to dip my toe in the relationship fountain, I met who I thought was a nice man, and we spent a while together before he decided being one half of a twosome was too difficult and, eventually, after eighteen months of being together I called time. I feared that my life was being wasted with this person and wanting more than I felt he wanted to give me. So there I was, single again and getting on with my life. In this timeframe I started working in a language academy which led to me opening my own very successful language school. I also moved into the big house in which we now live with our private pool and relaxing outlook. My life was simple but I still felt that there were times when I was a bit lonely and wanted to enjoy my new calm lifestyle with someone special. Therefore, as I had no time to go out to meet someone, I decided to go online to search for a new beau. After a couple of coffee meetings, I finally found someone I quite liked and who seemed to like me, which, after all, is the most important part of starting anything. This new man appeared regularly to

meet me and soon became a frequent visitor to my house. He comes to see me one day and then misses the next, so I

have time alone and also time to feel like I´m with someone which, at first, worked perfectly. I have begun to wonder though if this is what I really want. Do I want to be part of a semi-casual relationship? Do I want something more? Do I just want to be back on my own again? Ironically, being on my own is when I´ve done my best work. My novel is written with the pain of loneliness when I don´t have an ´other half.´ I can do what I want in the evenings, every evening, I don´t have to worry about anyone except my little fella, but on the other hand, there´s no one to

go for a drink with in the evenings, and no one to cuddle up to on the sofa. Maybe I´m just not ready for a relationship; maybe he´s not the right one; or maybe I´m being too fussy and should just give him a chance. I know I can be slightly highly strung with my partners and there could be the fact that I´m just asking too much. Time will tell how I deal with this current situation. All I know is that these days certain life choices are accepted even if not agreed with. Someone who doesn´t want children is accepted, whilst people who want to live abroad can be applauded for their bravery. Your choice of job is taken as your personal choice and almost never questioned; or whether you buy or rent is a personal choice never called into dispute; but choosing a single life seems somehow to be wrong. People expect that everyone wants to be part of a couple and those of us who aren´t sure whether we want to be one whole or a half of two are somehow looked at slightly oddly. Whether we are gay, straight or bisexual we are all supposed to want someone in our lives, but there are those of us that are actually quite satisfied with a solitary existence, solitary in so far as not having a partner, we still have friends and other family to pass time with. There are certain things that I do need, I need to look after and care for my son, I need to look after myself, I need to shop for groceries and cook and clean, I need to eat and drink healthily and I need to be positive in my life, however what I do not need is to be in a partnership. I will continue with this person as long as my son and I are happy, but if it ever becomes more painful or disappointing than productive I will call it a day. Maybe what I´m searching for doesn´t exist or maybe I don´t even know what I want. I guess one day my prince will come, or this new man will turn up with my glass slipper.

NICK’S NOT FINISHED

There was plenty of anti-Tory venom being spat out by Nick Clegg this week at the Lib Dem gathering in Glasgow, as at times he resembled a rattlesnake snake hissing in all directions after being force-fed some strong medication. It’s the name of the game as the junior coalition partner has to quickly put some big distance between itself and the Conservatives over the next seven months before the election in May. It’s not easy, what with the rise of UKIP and voters still remembering Clegg doing an about turn on student tuition fees. The opinion polls in individual marginal Lib Dem seats don’t look good, with both Labour and the Tories set to feast on a number of gains, but we’ve been down this

road before. For whatever reason, the Lib Dems always poll low in surveys, but when we get the proper election campaign, up go their numbers. Clegg is an excellent TV performer, and many surveys in the last campaign had viewers saying that he was better than Gordon

Brown and David Cameron in the televised debates. He also has a trump card up his sleeve, and that’s the antiquated election broadcasting rules. The Lib Dems, by law, are guaranteed equal airtime to the Tories and Labour, and that means a shut-out for Nigel

Farage and UKIP, with no shared platforms. That’s no bad thing for the political establishment, and also for Clegg, who Farage spat out easily during the two ill conceived European debates earlier this year. I’m not writing an obituary for the deputy Prime Minister just yet.

John Prescott is one of a whole line of L a b o u r grandees that is losing patience with Ed Miliband. He slagged off the leader for being too timid and not rolling his sleeves up, whilst he said that the Tory conference featured a confident leader and was full of policies. He even described David Cameron’s pledge to slash income tax as a “belter”, as some opinion polls are showing the Tories actually leading over Labour. Prescott wrote his comments in the Sunday Mirror, saying that virtually nothing memorable came out of the recent

Labour conference. You can almost smell a discussion about the wrong Miliband being chosen if Ed fails to get the Downing Street keys next May! By the time you are reading this, the UK byelection results are in, and Douglas Carswell would have won the Clacton vote for UKIP, having stood down as a Tory MP to create the vacancy. I suspect that Labour probably hung on to the Heywood and Middleton seat reasonably comfortably despite UKIP coming a credible second. Both results though still lead to the view that the Tories are likely to suffer at Nigel Farage’s hands come the May election, and despite his bluster, I’ve not heard of any key Labour figures crossing over into the UKIP camp, have you?

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED. Statistics in Spain

Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

When you discover you’ve been burgled

As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.

Peace-of-mind with Linea Directa

We understand that your peace-of-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

Hold-up outside the home

In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documents are quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

POOCH LICENSE NEEDED

HOW many more babies and young children have to die before stupid and totally pathetic people get it through their thick heads that dogs are killers. Sadly, yet another baby has died in the jaws of what was probably an illegal breed pit bull terrier. It happened in Daventry, and police attending the scene were totally traumatised by the sight they found. A relative had tried to get the baby from the dog´s jaws and suffered injuries. The scene must have been horrific. The local MP has said that Northamptonshire police have dealt with 62 cases of dog attacks in the past two years. That´s just one police force among many across Britain. The tragedy has sparked calls for new, tougher rules to be put in place to prevent potentially dangerous dogs from being in family homes. I couldn´t agree more. If people can´t work it out for themselves that big dogs and small children don´t mix, then legislation should be introduced to enforce it. Hopefully it will prompt dog licences to be reintroduced in the UK - and it wouldn't go amiss in Spain too. It is a wake-up call for people to make certain that when they select a dog, it is a breed that has a good reputation and that they are able to control the dog. Local councillors say licencing might encourage more responsible dog ownership and dissuade the chavs in society from having one. STILL on the subject of dogs, scientists in the UK are increasingly concerned about the spread of infections caused by dog faeces the scourge of parks and gardens. Every day in the UK, 1,000 tonnes of dog poo is created and that´s a small mountain

of the stuff! And what´s worse, it contains E.coli bacteria, some of which can

had a drink' and she'd always have a few men on the go," the friend added.

appeal against lenient sentencing and she was hauled before the Appeal Court and

cause serious illness to humans. The problem is worse when rain washes it into water courses, streams, rivers and the sea where people swim. Just think of the horrible cocktail of germs lurking in Spain´s parks, gardens and pavements, especially after months of droughts, all because selfish people will not clean up after their animals. There are many illnesses and diseases which befall people already, without adding to the risk because of people who have pets and don´t accept the responsibility which goes with it. NEXT I´m introducing you to an oversexed 44-year-old ex-sailor, Karen Ackland (pictured), who, according to a friend, is totally out of control when she has had a few drinks. The friend said: "She was always a party animal and when she had too many drinks she completely loses all self-respect and embarrasses herself. "She used to always say 'I'm a nightmare when I've

One evening, Ackland, a divorced mother of two, was at a party and met a 14-yearold boy. After hours of drinking, Ackland backed the helpless boy into a corner in the kitchen and they kissed. She tried to get the boy to walk her home on the pretext she had lost her phone, but his older brother refused to let him go. After hours of drinking, the boy's mother offered Ackland a bed at their home, but as the boy went upstairs to get some tracksuit bottoms so he could change for bed, she sneaked into the room behind him. Ackland, the mother of two teenagers, pounced on the boy and used him as her 'sex object' - until the boy's older brother heard noises and Karen saying, 'I can't believe I'm doing this with a 15 year old!', and he burst into the bedroom. When she appeared in court she was given just a nine-month suspended prison term. Thankfully the law now allows the prosecution to

judges imposed on her an immediate two year jail term, ordered her to be placed on the Sex offenders' Register and to pay £500 court costs. If there´s one thing that gets

right up my nose are women getting away with committing offences which, if a man had committed them the book would be thrown at him. Can you imagine the sentence which would have been imposed on a 44-year-old man who had sex with a 14year-old girl in these circumstances. I doubt if he would have got away with just two years imprisonment. The judge at Canterbury Court who imposed the ninemonth suspended sentence should be sacked. If a few such examples were set, perhaps other judges would get the message and would stop giving the rubbish in society a pat on the head and told not to do it again. IT now seems that the British Government and Europe are set to be on collision course if the Tories win the next election. We know UKIP´s stance on the EU and the European Court of Human Rights, they would get out of all of it. The Tories have now declared that a future Conservative government would pull Britain out of the European Court of Human Rights if it did not accept that Parliament had the final say on UK law. This has been rejected by Strasbourg, adding that it was "inconceivable that the UK as a human rights leader and founding country of this organisation would leave." Sadly, European judges have pushed the boundaries of the original legislation, with rulings like trying to give con-

victed criminals in prison the vote - getting right up British noses. Rulings like preventing Britain expelling a foreign criminal from the UK because he was "entitled to a family life in Britain" makes many Brits turn in their stomachs and just fuels more anti-EU opinion. It also fuels my view that it will be the most fascinating general election next year. POWER corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This was what historian Baron John Acton said more than a century ago and scientists have now proved it right. They have found that feelings of power "affects people´s brains like cocaine". We´ve seen it down the ages; it has caused wars and conflicts; and it causes disasters in the boardroom and workplace, whenever someone has power over another. The scientists conducted a series of experiments and found that once honest people had tasted power, they couldn't resist rewarding themselves at the expense of others. That´s why people living in countries with totalitarian regimes, or are ruled by dictators or kings, are at such a disadvantage compared with people living in democracies. I can´t help looking at the problems in creating presidents of communities here in Spain. No doubt the legislation setting it up was brought in with the very best of intentions, but in practice it can so often end in disaster, with out of control presidents simply doing their own thing or at worst feathering their own nests. Perhaps it´s time to have a fresh approach, because here in Spain there are communities not faring very well under dictatorships.

CAN YOU NAME THESE QUIZ SHOWS?

TRELI ON THE TELLY MORE TEA, VICAR?

pect a long shelf life in it. For the first time ever, with ALEX  the BBC are running all their panel shows at the TRELINSKI same time of the year, Earlier in the year, so we have new editions James Norton was of QI, Mock The Week, making us scream at Would I Lie To You; and the TV as the nasty piece of work in the brilliant Happy Valley. He’s now back wearing a dog collar as a vicar who likes to solve crimes in Grantchester in tandem with a local plod played by Robson Green. Add some gorgeous Cambridgeshire settings and a time setting of the fifties and you have all you need for a hit drama for ITV. It’s by the numbers stuff as Midsomer meets a young Father Brown, but it has a lot of likeability and I sus-

Have I Got News For You all joyfully hitting us within the space of one day! Much as I’m a massive HIGNFY fan, the better belly laughs come from Mock The Week, which may not be as topical but has a naugh-

tier feel, helped by a later transmission time on a Thursday night on BBC2. It’s interesting to see that ITV are not throwing away Friday evenings anymore. After two weeks of The X Factor,

tonight sees the return of Lewis, which normally has played on a Sunday night or at the start of the week. It’s good to see that people who want something with a bit of meat at the end of the week are being rewarded. The format though, of splitting of stories over two episodes like in the last series, has not got the fans leaping up and down in excitement. That’s a pure commercial decision and about making bucks rather than satisfying the viewers. A quick “halfway through the series” mention of Doctor Who. Peter Capaldi, as expected is stellar in the role, but Jenna Coleman as Clara has blossomed, and the acrimonious

pay-off at the end of last Saturday’s story probably paves the way for her expected departure in the Christmas special. That’s a shame because there’s some seriously good chemistry between the two stars of the show. It’s a good deck on BBC1 on a Saturday night with Strictly in top form (running amok over The X Factor), and then Casaulty really showing some bite after Doctor Who with paramedic Jeff surprisingly meeting the Grim Reaper in an excellent episode. It’s funeral time tomorrow, and I would love to do a tally of all the deaths that have hit Casualty and Holby City staff over the years. I’m surprised any NHS workers there can get any insurance!

Estonia v England (Kick-off 6.00pm). Coverage of the Euro 2016 Group E qualifier from the A Le Coq Arena in Tallinn, where the sides play their third match of the campaign. Roy Hodgson's men continue their efforts to progress to the tournament in France with this potentially tricky tie away from home. There have only been two previous encounters between these nations, which formed part of the qualifying campaign for Euro 2008, and while England failed to emerge from that group they did manage to record 3-0 victories home and away against the Estonians.

The Apprentice BBC 1 - 22:00

1/14. New series. Alan Sugar begins his 10th search for new business blood - and the fourth since he changed the format from a multi-week job interview to the search for a partner, offering the hopefuls a £250,000 investment in a new start-up company. As usual, the millionaire host sets out his stall with his introductory pep talk, after which the entrepreneurs are divided into teams and it's straight on with the first task - selling the past decade's worth of Apprentice goods in just one day. All the previous selling challenges' merchandise has been combined, and the teams - boys v girls, of course - must think outside the box to increase their margins.

Waterloo Road BBC 1 - 21:00

1/20. New series. As Waterloo Road opens its doors for another new term. Vaughan is the kind of dynamic, forward-thinking chap the school needs, and while he and Allie are madly in love, their home life is far from easy thanks to their blended family - they have four children between them from previous relationships, and none of them gets along. Widower and single father Thomas Farriner is the king's baker, currently providing the Navy with bread and biscuits from his Pudding Lane bakery. His sister-in-law Sarah often helps out at the shop - a distraction from the fact her wayward husband (Thomas's brother) has been missing at sea for months now. Thomas is dismayed to learn from Navy official Samuel Pepys that it's unlikely he'll be paid for his latest job, owing to the expense of the war against the Dutch.

MIGRATION AND WAX Written by Michael Burke RHAD MSHAA of Digital Hearing, Quesada

Previously we have looked at the eardrum’s part in our hearing. The eardrum has a second role: it is also the start point of the ear’s natural cleaning system. The outer layer of the eardrum skin and all the skin in your outer ear begins life in the centre of the eardrum. A cell will grow and then another will grow behind it, pushing the first one away and by this process all the skin in your ear canal constantly grows outwards, pushing all dirt, dust, wax, and dead skin cells out of your ear. This process is known as ‘migration’ and never stops. Your ears never stop growing until the day you die! The older you get the bigger, the bigger they get! This is one of the reasons you should not poke things into your ears to get rid of wax. Remember the old doctor’s adage: ‘Never put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear.’ If you start pushing wax back in, you can cause a compacted blockage or even cause a cut in the delicate skin which in healing can form a ridge, and the migrating skin cells will not be able to clear your ears properly, resulting in a wall of wax, debris and dead skin, which can affect your ability to hear. Let the ear clean itself. If you are prone to wax, use something natural like olive oil; a few drops at room temperature can help lubricate the system. Wax is a natural product of the ear canal. It is moist, sticky and honey-coloured when fresh and gets darker, turning to a black granite as it ages. Wax is acidic; it is a bacteriastatic (- it stops germs breeding). It also traps dust and dead skin cells and oils the skin, stopping it from drying out. Too much wax is a nuisance and can lead to a temporary hearing loss. Too little is worse and can lead to cracking skin and infections. Your ear can be 90% full of wax and you can still hear (so long as there is a gap for sound to get around it); it is the last few percent that makes the difference. Often if you have a wax build-up but can still hear, if you start to use drops things can get worse before they get better: the hardened wax can soften and fill in the gaps that were allowing the sound through, before eventually clearing. Wax is a natural defence product of the ear; it is not dirty. Sometimes the ears of people who work in a very noisy, hot or dusty environment produce excessive wax to combat these conditions and sometimes when they leave these environments the increased production of wax does not stop. Don’t worry about it; wax is a friend. Horoscopes Aries March 21 - April 19 Wednesday’s eclipse of the Moon in Aries marks a major turning point in your affairs. New horizons beckon, so let go of preconceived ideas and focus on the future. Someone close may try to hold you back or pour cold water on your plans, but insist they listen. You will do no one any favours if you let others call the tune this week.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 What you really want from life is due to undergo subtle but far-reaching changes. If you tune into your deeper feelings, you could also find you can no longer put off a decision that you had postponed. Do not let an old commitment hold you back. The Moon’s eclipse on Wednesday gives you greater intuition. Let it be your guide.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 Major changes in the company you keep could be triggered by the Moon’s eclipse this week. Do not feel you should maintain the status quo, or try to swim against the tide. With so much celestial action in the skies all week, what matters most is being open to the many possibilities around you. A new, important friendship is writ large in the stars.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 A chance to put your grand plan into action and get closer to your long-term career goal is now at hand. Powerful alignments in the skies make this a time of growth and change as well as real achievement, so do not let domestic issues slow you down. The Moon’s eclipse on Wednesday suggests that you are due to win the recognition and support that you deserve.

By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 You hold a winning hand this week, so do not let an unexpected conversation with a friend or colleague undermine your confidence or make you overcautious. With Uranus, the planet of creative growth and change, in league with lucky Jupiter in Leo, the only thing you can do wrong is hedge your bets. The time has come to take decisive action.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 Events this week should make it clear just how strong your hand is in a certain situation, so do not hesitate to ask for what you want from those concerned, or to press home your advantage. The Moon’s eclipse on Wednesday also brings the future of a close relationship into sharper focus. Work out where you really want to go from here

Libra September 23 - October 22 Wednesday’s total eclipse of the Moon in Aries marks the start of a new era in your private life. The importance of being open to possibilities for growth and change is strongly stressed, so do not hold on to situations that you may have outgrown just because they are familiar. Better times lie ahead.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21 Accepting change and being prepared to take the road less travelled is the key to getting what you really want from life in the long term, so do not let doubts about the future make you miss a chance to break new ground this week. With the action planet, Mars, now in charge of your finances, you can bring about a major breakthrough.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 What matters most in the weeks to come is being true to your vision, so do not be afraid to stand your ground and do things your way. Unexpected changes in a new, important friendship are also in the stars. If you are confident about what you have to offer, you can usher in a more fulfilling time. Make the opening move midweek.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19 A certain situation is not cast in stone, so let no one make decisions for you or tell you how to live your life this week. The Moon’s eclipse on Wednesday in your chart’s domestic zone suggests that important changes are on the horizon. They could put you in a strong position, so relax and do not be afraid to go along with what occurs.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 Do not believe everything you hear this week, or read meanings into someone’s words that are not there. Advice from someone close could also undermine your confidence in your ability to reach a current goal. Trust your judgment and insist that others give you more space to do things your way. The tide turns in your favour later in the week.

Pisces February 19 - March 20 The Moon’s eclipse on Wednesday in your chart’s financial sector is due to help you find a more creative way to ease cashflow problems and move forward. If you are confident and make your own decisions, you can reach a more secure position, so have faith in your ability to reach your goal. Whatever others think is neither here nor there.

Tyre safeTy: are you properly aTTyred? Why checking your tyres regularly could save you from more than just a hefty fine

This might all sound obvious, but many people don’t realise just how much danger doing otherwise can put them in. So here are the Courier’s top tyre safety tips: 1. Turn your front wheels Pointing the wheels out in one direction will give you better access to the tread of each tyre, so that you can make your checks properly and without scrabbling around in the wheel arch. 2. Check for wear Buy a cheap tread depth gauge, available on the internet

or from any good motoring shop. You should change your tyres when you’ve a minimum of 2mm left (better still with 3mm left), despite the legal limit being as low as 1.6mm. Don’t forget you should check in the centre of the tread, as well as at each side of it. If there’s less tread on one side or the other, your tyres could be underinflated, or your suspension might not be aligned correctly. If there’s less tread in the centre of the tread, your tyres are probably over-inflated. 3. Check your pressures. You can also buy cheap pressure gauges, or you can check your pressures using the air pump at your local garage. Look in your car’s handbook to find the right pressure for your car, and check regularly because the pressure will drop over time. Regular checking can also alert you to a slow puncture before you’re caught out on the road. And don’t forget that if you’re going away with the family, you may need to add a couple of psi to cope with the extra weight – again, double check with your car’s handbook 4. Visually inspect your tyres

Not sure what to look for here? Well, if anything looks out of the ordinary, it probably is. Bulges are not good, and nor is cracking along the sidewall. Any scratches or gouges in the rubber, even if they haven’t punctured the tyre, should also lead to replacement. 5. Do all of the above regularly Sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed how often it slips your mind. Put a note in your calendar or diary every month to make sure you remember. You’ll be glad you did the next time you have to do an emergency stop. 6. Don’t mix tyres across an axle Running tyres of different tread depths, or worse still, different types, on one side of the car to the other is a big no-no. The resulting differences in grip will cause the car to be unpredictable, or even uncontrollable in an emergency situation. Whether it’s at the front or at the back, make sure the tyres on each side of the car are of the same make and model, and have the same pressure and tread depth. 7. Don’t fit newer tyres at the front Whether your car is front or rear-wheel drive, worn tyres on the rear can cause the back end of the car to slew around in slippery conditions, because the rear end loses traction first. This is much harder to counteract than understeer, which is when the front end loses traction first and the car tries to go straight on instead of turning. So if one end’s going to run out of grip before the other, it’s best to make sure it’s the front. 8. Use winter tyres in the winter Winter tyres are more effective than summer tyres in cold weather – not just when there's snow or ice on the ground. So for the majority of the British winter, a set of winter tyres will be performing better than the equivalent summer tyres. Don’t forget to change back in the spring, though – the softer compound of a winter tyre means its braking distances will be far longer when the weather warms up.

DR MACHI MANNU’s ADvICe ClINIC eMAIl yoUR qUestIoNs AND CoMMeNts to CoNtACt@MeDb.es

Nobody can stop you getting older but with MitoQ you no longer have to look or feel like you are. MitoQ is a product that doesn’t simply cover up the signs of diseases and ageing; it goes to the root cause and works at a cellular level, making it the most effective product currently on the market. 10 years ago, Dr Smith and Dr Murphy, Cambridge graduate researchers realised that in order to truly unlock the energy potential of the body, and achieve all round healing of the body, they had to find a way to super-charge the ´energy power station´located in every cell in the body called the Mitochondria. The scientists eventually found a way to deliver the most vital ingredient needed for energy generation in the body called CoQ10, directly into the ´energy power stations´of cells – the mitochondria. This had never been done before. Their amazing feat of medical engineering lead to the creation of the most exciting supplement of our time known as MitoQ. MITOQ IS 847 TIMES MORE POWERFUL THAN ANY OTHER COQ10 SUPPLEMENT To understand the incredible power of MitoQ, you need to understand the influence that the mitochondria has on your existence. For the longest time, scientists knew that the mitochondria generated energy. And they believed it was all it did. But in recent years, research has shown that the mitochondria may be the most important structure in the cell. For a start, the mitochondria is the only other part of the cell apart from the nucleus ( the central command centre of cells) capable of producing DNA (genetic material). This means that the signals from the mitochondria influences every aspect of cell activity. The ability of cells to correctly hear these messages from the mitochondria, determines how well our bodies grow, repair themselves and fight of infections s and diseases. Damaged Mitochondria send incorrect messages, disrupts energy generation, and produces toxic waste that create chronic diseases. Even worse, defective mitochondria will create other defective mitochondria and eventually energy generation in the body completely collapses. Many chronic diseases including heart, liver and kidney diseases, Alzheimer´s, Multiple sclerosis, Diabetes

as well as ageing are caused by damaged mitochondria. Scientists are only just realising how vulnerable the mitochondria are to subtle changes in the environment. Pollution, medications, toxic chemicals and low levels of antioxidants such as CoQ10 are known to cause severe damage to the mitochondria. MitoQ has been carefully formulated to release CoQ10 – the most powerful antioxidant in the body, directly into the mitochondria of cells, where it is needed the most. Take 2 a day and stop the signs of ageing It is no secret that from the age of about twenty our bodies start to decline with age. One of the first signs of ageing is the look and feel of our skin. However, once the skin starts looking older it means that our organs are also ageing. In time we will start to feel old and our bodies won’t be as effective as they once were. This is where MitoQ steps in. By taking 2 capsules of MitoQ a day anyone can slow down, stop or even reverse the signs of ageing. The science behind the MitoQ capsules is simple – the ingredients stop cells from being affected by age. This may seem like futuristic medicine but with over a decade of research, it really does work. MitoQ is an antioxidant that targets the mitochondria and keeps them working efficiently, ensuing that every cell remains in a healthy condition. Looking young and healthy may be the main reason that many people choose MitoQ but it is certainly not the only benefit. By giving your body a boost at a cellular level the MitoQ actually affects every part of your body, inside and out. Your organs will be rejuvenated, your energy levels will increase and you may even find that your brain gets quicker. In fact many clients have reported that they feel as good as they did 5, 10 or even 15 years ago. Increased energy levels will naturally lead to a more active lifestyle which in turn will also help to keep you looking and feeling younger. Combining MitoQ capsules with a healthy diet and recommended amount of exercise has proven to be the most effective way of fighting the symptoms of ageing. MitoQ is also available as a serum. MitoQ can’t stop you from getting older, but it will make you look and feel great while you do it. MitoQ is now available from MedB Health Centre Punta Marina, Los Altos at a special discount price for Costa Blanca residents. 1 bottle (60 capsules) – 43 Euros, Triple Pack – 126 Euros. Free Shipping to Spain.

how cholesterol lowerinG statin druGs damaGe the bodY You may be aware of the ongoing debate on the dangers of statin drugs used to lower high cholesterol. Supporters of statins claim that lowering cholesterol will reduce the risk of developing heart diseases. But critics of statins point out that although millions more people take statins every year, the incidence of cardiovascular diseases is higher today than at any other time in human history. Cholesterol is blamed as the cause of heart diseases, but the science of the day is quite clear that heart and arterial diseases are triggered by inflammation due to toxic free radicals and other harmful chemicals in the environment. Cholesterol migrates to the site of injury to heal the wound, but as inflammation persists, it starts to build-up. And over time other compounds stick to the ´fatty´cholesterol, causing plaques to form. Cholesterol however is one of the most useful substances in the body. Every doctor should know this fact. The cholesterol pathway is one of the most important topics in medical school. Cholesterol is so vital your liver makes about 1 gramme every day. Cholesterol sustains your nervous system. Half of

the dry weight of your brain is cholesterol. Every nerve in your body is protected by a pad made from cholesterol. Cholesterol is the raw material your body needs to make all hormones – testosterone, oestrogens, thyroxine, and even vitamin D. By depriving the body of cholesterol, statins can trigger harmful changes to the body. However statins most damaging effect is that it also stops the body from making another vital chemical from cholesterol called CoenzymeQ10 or CoQ10. Even the manufacturers of statins are clear about this deadly effect and in many parts of the world, no doctor will prescribe statins without also prescribing a source of CoQ10 . CoQ10 is a chemical required by every cell in your body to produce energy and also to counteract the damage that occurs when energy is produced. CoQ10 concentrates in the most active organs of the body, like the heart, brain, muscles, kidney and liver. No one should take statin drugs, but if you have to, then consider also taking the most powerful form of CoQ10 know as MitoQ. MitoQ is a brand new form of CoQ10, that is over 800

His mantras of "Get up get out and do something" and '#getfitdontquit' have struck a nerve, prompting more than 34,000 people to follow his account in the last five months. His latest video has attracted nearly 55,000 comments - most of them spurring the St Louis resident on to further success. One follower wrote: "Well done Larry...you're an inspiration to many! Keep up the hard work man!" Another said: "I have nothing but respect and admiration for your determination Larry! It's a long hard road but you can get there." The gym where he works out has also got on board - appealing for fellow gym-goers to donate healthy foods and follow Larry's 'fitness journey' using the hashtag #teamlarry. Although Mr Evans hasn't revealed exactly how much weight he has lost in the 140 days since he started his weight loss campaign, a before-andafter picture on his Facebook account shows him looking noticeably slimmer.

IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com

RICH LUVVIES BUNKER GOLF

Golf does not seem to do itself many favours. The first time the Royal & Ancient clubhouse was seen on our screens since their historic vote last month to accept women members was during the Pro-Am tournament last weekend and the game still seemed as inclusive as being in the directors’ box at Stamford Bridge! It is not gender as the great divide at the Alfred Dunhill Links but elitism. Not elitism in the sense of sport, and golf’s ultimate elite of Rory McIlroy, but elitism in the sense of who was perceived as actually playing the game. In the glorified pro-am, the likes of Sir Ian Botham, Sir Bobby Charlton, Johann Cruyff, Ruud Gullit, Jamie Redknapp, Tim Henman, in addition to actors Hugh Grant and Damian Lewis (pictured) who were depicted as normal golfers, as being just like you and me. To varying degrees, they hit the ball like you and me and without doubt feel as inadequate about their hand-eye co-ordination as you and me. But the differences were obvious. They are there with their golden ticket to the inner sanctum, with that allaccess badge granted on

fame, there on three of the world’s great courses, with some of the game’s great players, living out our dreams. The storyline is purported to be them for us but, in fact, it is them and us. In fairness, the sponsors do invite the unknown men and fine young amateurs and one talented amateur credits playing alongside Peter

Uihlein in this tournament a year ago as helping him prevail at the Amateur Championship. Yet we are

talking perception here and if we aren’t, why was the sizeable PR operation at work last weekend? Of course, nobody should or would expect the sponsors to call up normal people as there would be absolutely no acquisition for their investment. The luxury goods company pumps in more than £5 million and is entirely justified in seeking as much publicity for that as possible. The argument is there would be a financial hole without Dunhill and without its investment it would not be possible for the public to go for free to the Old Course at St A n d r e w s , Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, to watch players of the calibre of Rory McIlroy. How could that be a negative, particularly for the European Tour? In these cashstricken times, when tournaments are dropping off the schedule like zeros off a Gross Domestic Product, it is easy to understand why those at Wentworth HQ are so willing to sell Dunhill its platform. Neither is it the only professional circuit to do so. Every major Tour worthy of its millionaire membership boasts a lucrative pro-am on its “official” calendars. Its first priority is to its players and to ensuring the strength of the Tour to attract the best players and the best sponsors. Around it goes again. Last Sunday, Oliver Wilson (pictured) won the coveted title getting a much-needed

boost after his flagging fortunes. This tournament changed McIlroy’s life when he finished third to earn his card as an 18-year-old. If it had no relevance to sport, the news media would not be covering it, and the media journalists would not be eating the free lunches or attending the lavish media functions. But step back from the trough and consider if there is a responsibility to the bigger picture. In truth, these luvvie love-ins do nothing for golf’s standing as a serious sport and do nothing to help the development of the game. Whether rightly or wrongly, they generate the “them and us” perception and as the R&A finally realised in accepting females after more than 250 years of discrimination, perception truly does matter. This upstairs-downstairs image was even projected at the Ryder Cup. There were the punters, who had paid out up to £145 for a day’s ticket, and there were the likes of actor James Nesbitt, Scottish footballer Charlie Adam and a collection of VIPs, inside the ropes, blocking the view of these poor paying customers. And even if they weren’t, it was a monstrous scene; this tight group of the famous, the wealthy and the connected, following directly behind the professionals like the rats behind the Pied Piper and their vast entourages stalking their gladiators in the Coliseum. It put the genuine fan in their place. Them and us. There are those such as Donald Trump who hold the view that golf should be an “aspiration sport”, that it should be a sport people are drawn to once they are mak-

KNOW YOUR RULES QUESTION A player is looking for his ball in a dry ditch, marked as a hazard by yellow stakes using his golf club to rake around the grass, as he was grounding his club in a hazard (Rule 13-4) Should he receive a penalty? ANSWER When your ball lies in a hazard – bunker or water hazard, you cannot touch the ground with your club or hand. (Rule 13-4) However, in searching for your ball, you may touch or bend grass, even in a hazard. It is also acceptable to use the club as a walking aid, to prevent you are doing it to prevent falling.

ing their way up the greasy pole. Yet while that makes perfect sense to country club owners, to those at the grassroots level of the sport it is deeply frustrating as participation levels plummet. Because youngsters from

unprivileged backgrounds can and do aspire to transport themselves inside those ropes for inspiring reasons. Take the three under-30’s in the world’s top 10:McIlroy is the son of a bartender who had three jobs to fuel his boy’s dreams. Rickie Fowler is the son of a builder, whose grandfather, of Japanese descent, had been detained in the war. Jason Day’s father died of stomach cancer when his son was 11 and the boy descended into alcoholism before being saved by his mother who took out a second mortgage to send him to a golf school. They all prove that golf’s problem is clearly not access. So what is stopping the kids from trying to emulate McIlroy and Co? Why is there this great decline in numbers? Perception must be a primary issue. And the sight of the rich and famous taking six hours of extravagance really does not help at all.

playing golf which included: - 6 x 30 minute individual golf lessons. - 6 x 1 hour group lessons. - 1 x On course playing lesson. - Use of the golf course at off-peak times. - Use of the practice facilities. - Q&A evenings to include Rules and Etiquette (Very important) - Golf shop “money off vouchers” up to £100. - Academy competitions and Social membership - All this for just, £349 (420 euros) per year. Another was an offer of 50% for annual membership for a member’s spouse, which is of course you want your good lady to see what you are up to! Now this is what I believe will go some way to attracting people to our lovely game. It would help Golf Directors over here to follow this example in increasing revenue instead of increasing green fees!

BARCA SET THE PACE IT’S THAT MAN AGAIN RAYO VALLECANO 0

BARCELONA 2

Barcelona remained at the top of the Primera Division table following a comfortable win last Saturday at Rayo Vallecano, who had two men sent off in the second half. The Madrid side made a promising start to the game but Lionel Messi got the visitors off the mark after 34 minutes and a moment later Neymar doubled the advantage to kill off Rayo's hopes. The hosts were reduced to 10 men on the hour mark when Jorge Morcillo received a second booking, and Rayo forward Javier Aquino suffered the same fate in injury time, but they conceded no further goals. Barca goalkeeper Claudio Bravo also made club history by keeping a record seventh consecutive clean sheet, and the Chilean made a vital save early on to prevent Alberto Bueno from giving Rayo the lead after nine minutes, diving across goal to tip the forward's driven shot around the post. With the Euro 2016 qualifiers in play, Barcelona’s next match is at home to Eibar a week on Saturday.

ATHLETIC BILBAO 0

REAL MADRID 5

Real Madrid moved into the Primera Division's top four as Cristiano Ronaldo's third hattrick in four league games was the highlight in struggling Athletic Bilbao’s slaughter at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo, who had been an injury doubt prior to the match, opened the scoring with a header on two minutes before Karim Benzema's 41st-minute nodded effort made it 20. The Portugal forward then slotted in a cross from Gareth Bale - who had also teed up his first of the evening - in the 55th minute, and subsequently set up a simple Benzema finish in the 69th. World player of the year Ronaldo capped another impressive display by completing his treble two minutes from time, taking his tally for the season to 17 goals. Real have now won six matches in a row in all competitions - during which they have scored 27 times - after back-to-back defeats earlier in the campaign, and trail leaders Barcelona by four points. The next match sees Real away to Levante a week on Saturday.

UNLUCKY ILICITANOS HAIL CESAR ALMERIA 2

Elche’s Jonathas got his marching orders as 10-man Elche held on to claim their first point in four matches from an away draw at Almeria last Saturday. It was a game that the visitors largely dominated, and scored after just six minutes with the first real chance of the game as Rodriguez headed home from Jonathas' cross in the centre of the box. Almeria levelled things up with ten minutes left in the first half as Edu Albacar conceded a foul which appeared to be out of the box, but the referee, Cerro Del Grande, controversially awarded a penalty which Verza converted. Elche derservedly went ahead for the second time in the match as Pedro Mosquera set up Jonathas and he made no mistake with his well-placed volley landing in the top left of the goal. But with 23 minutes remaining, Jonathas was sent off after he was harshly shown a second yellow card, this one for handball to leave his side fighting to hold onto their narrow lead. They were unable to do so as Almeria pressed and somewhat undeservedly got a point from a Hemed header with five minutes remaining Afterwards, Elche boss Fran Escriba preferred to speak about his team’s performance in the disappointing draw,

avoiding the controversial refereeing decisions. “I prefer to speak about the performance of the team. We’re happy, but disappointed with the result because we expected to get three points. Del Grande is an excellent referee and one of the best we have. I don’t want to comment on whether he was wrong or not, because we all make mistakes”. Elche are at least out of the bottom four, and entertain inform Sevilla on Sunday October 19th.

Torry became the first club this term to lower the colours of Levante UD at their home ground, but had to battle hard for the victory. The hosts started off with three great openings in the first five minutes, Torry responding with their own farrago of volleys, drives and close shaves. It was thrilling end to end play and very much in keeping with the philosophy of manager Galiana. His line up excluded Brani completely, with Cristian and Carrasco surprise substitutes. Steve Ekedi pressed through the middle, Rafa and Cesar providing the width and support. It was a fluid move that saw Rafa collect the ball in the right hand channel, control it and look up for the telling run. Cesar obliged and Rafa slid it through two defenders into his stride. With cool composure, Cesar picked out his spot in the far corner of the net to give Torry a 1-0 interval advantage. The second half was likewise all action but with Levante desperate to equalise and retain their unbeaten home record. Their only loss was the opening game of the season and they had already established themselves as one of the likely promotion candidates. Torry's resolve was tested but stood firm, although Vicente Boix and Oscar had to perform some heroics to repel forceful attacks. Torry move on to 11 points, six off the leaders and keen to follow up with a home win on Sunday against another last season relegated outfit, Ontinyent, who has won all four home games, but lost all four away matches. The contest kicks off at 6.00pm.

FRIENDLY DRUBBING CD TORREVIEJA 1

CD MONTESINOS 0 PLAYAS DE ORIHUELA 1 A physical Orihuela side came, saw, and conquered as Montesinos lost their first match of the season in a front of 220 spectators last Saturday evening. The home side started the brighter but Monte’s star player, Vaz, was well marked out of matters until he finally produced a good save from the Orihuela keeper in the 20th minute. The visitors took the lead though as Monte’s right back Dimitry was caught napping with the Orihuela forward cutting inside to score via the post. The second half saw some early chances for Monte, but Orihuela defended and marked well, with the home side being limited to strikes from a distance, as the game fizzled out for a Monte home defeat. They’re away this Sunday to San Isidro.

CD TORREVIEJA 1

The good news for fans yesterday morning (Thursday) was that they saw some exceptional goals. Torry started off the fun in the sun with a beautifully worked move right to left, which was finished off in clinical fashion by Cesar from the edge of the area. For the next ten minutes the home side created chances, especially when Ruben flashed a header over the bar from a free kick. However, Elche composed themselves and their movement off the ball was simply dazzling. Torry could not cope with their diagonal runs into the channels and before the interval, the visitors had racked up five. The second half was ten seconds old when they added a sixth and when Alexis was booked for a foul in the box, the ball was despatched into the net from the penalty spot, though Marcos got his hand to it but could not prevent it crossing the line. In the end, it was a master class lesson from Elche, who avenged last season´s 3-0 loss in no uncertain terms. Their play was composed, they quickened the pace when required and had far too much fire power for a near demoralised home defence.

WAYNE’S WORLD

UNITEd SUpErSTAr, CApTAIN FANTASTIC – or SCoUSE GIT?

Before all you Liverpudlians start reaching for the phone or your PC, the latter description comes from a joke originating from TV’s sixties comedy ‘Till Death Us Do Part’, the aggressive term addressed by that outrageous cockney bigot, the immortal Alf Garnett to his son-in-law, who hailed from Merseyside. It must be a strange old business being Wayne Rooney. You’re only really revered in one half of Manchester on a good day (like if United have won, and you’ve scored), but at the same time understandably reviled in the Blue quarters of The City, especially after ‘that’ goal of the decade you scored against them in a local derby. Despite his fantastic abilities, record and great goals, Wayne Rooney is not really accepted as a Mancunian, because he is a Liverpudlian. Well, that’s not true exactly, he’s an Evertonian to be precise, so the man will never really be fully accepted by diehard United fans in the way say adopted Geordie Bobby

noted, by certain members of United’s legion of world-wide fans, perhaps the most well-known football club on the planet. Current estimates put Rooney struggling along on £17m per annum! Despite such Mancunian handicaps like place of birth, the story to date shows Wayne Rooney is on course to break all United records, currently third in the greatest goalscorers’ league behind Denis Law and Charlton. Despite a few public faux pas, like cavorting with prostitutes in hotels, and a few naughty let-your-replanted-hair-down nights out for which he was rightly disciplined, our Wayne seems to have settled down domestically after getting married to his longsuffering teenage sweetheart Coleen, who has since borne him two children. From being a teenage p r o d i g y raised on

Charlton always was, or in modern times Paul Scholes. Nevertheless Rooney, still at the tender age of 28 has surely much, much more to come in his career – but will it always be at United? You see, our Wayne has previous about leaving Old Trafford. In Alex Ferguson’s imaginatively titled 2013 book ‘My Autobiography’* there is a whole chapter just on Rooney. Much mention is made of the events of 2010 when Wayne went wayward and wanted away, cruelly and inaccurately accusing United of lacking ambition. Now that would have hurt at The Theatre of Dreams, given the club’s amazing record, especially under Ferguson. The fact that the hirsutely-transplanted one stayed after being awarded a huge new contract, bettering everyone else’s by far did not go unnoticed, and

Everton’s books, in 2004 £25m prised the prized player away from the club he supported and loved to mighty Manchester United, steadily becoming a global superstar in the process. The relationship between Rooney and his then new Old Trafford boss appears to have been problematical at times, and several times it looked like a big move was coming. But this was always smoothed over with stories of massive financial increases on top of already sickening salaries when compared to the average loyal supporter. Ferguson never seemed to have a regular team place for perhaps his greatest asset, later even dropping Rooney for important fixtures – which must have rankled. No-one - but no-one is bigger than Manchester United, Ferguson regularly affirmed– including Beckham, Keane – and Rooney. Today, United’s new manager Louis van Gaal does not appear to have any doubts that Wayne should always be in his starting line-up, but the Dutchman seems slightly unsure as to where to play his man – as an out-and-out striker with a deadly eye for goal, or in a more deeper creative role behind the United strikers like Robin van Persie: that’s a similar role to his England position where his teaming-up with Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge looks good for the future of the country. Currently the jury is out re the subject of captaincy for both his club and country. Rooney’s passion for the game has never been in doubt, the man always gives 100% - but in that respect should Wayne be captain, where in his case there is always a disciplinary risk? In a moment of madness last week, Rooney kicked out wildly at West Ham’s Stuart Downing and rightly received a straight red card. That is not the mark of a good captain, two yellow cards in a match could be considered an occupational hazard, but crazy rushes of blood to the head while lashing out idiotically are not. They do not set acceptable behavioural standards for team mates or as a football role model for the impressionable footballing youth. But in United’s current crazy crisis postFergie, where unbelievably Rooney’s original manager David Moyes came and went in an indecently-short period, United now have an unpredictable Dutchman at the helm - and seventh place was deemed failure for poor Moyes. Throughout the current traumas, Rooney has kept his head down, played his heart out, and to his credit not said anything publicly to further embarrass United and add to his world-renowned club’s woes. But at his footballing peak, the man seems to be at a crossroads again: new manager, captaincy and disciplinary issues make Wayne’s World a complex place to be. *My Autobiography, Alex Ferguson. 2013, Hodder & Stoughton.

Young Torrevieja tennis star Nicola Kuhn capped a great season by taking the under14 Boys crown at the Tennis Europe Junior Master tournament in Italy last weekend. It was the season-ending event for the elite players of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, and Kuhn was on fire as he lost just four games to Serbian, Marko Miladinovic, in the final. “I’m especially pleased because I played better in the final than in the other matches,” Nicola said. “I felt my level going up during the match, which was good. I wanted to show my best tennis today because it’s an important tournament and it’s important to end the year well, so I was very motivated.” Nicola’s win was the icing on the cake in a year which saw him win his first Category 1 title in Bolton, and went on to play on the winning Winter Cup by HEAD and Summer Cups teams, as well as helping to secure the World Junior Tennis title for Germany.

SINGING THE BLUES!

In Euro 2016 Weekend Chelsea Are High-Fiving Over Man City

Spiteful techie-area handbags as Arsene shoved Jose, eventually counted for nothing as the Gunners were spiked 2 – 0 at the Bridge. Average Arsenal were the latest biggies to experience the power of Jose Mourinho’s new Chelsea team – and what a team they are already this season. Previously sound defensively, the Blues midfield is now presided over by old Arsenal/new Chelsea maestro Cesc Fabregas, fresh from Barcelona and looking in cruise control with his creative craftsmanship. The Spaniard’s artistic assists have particularly benefitted Chelsea’s new wonder striker Diego Costa, now leading the Prem with an amazing nine goals from only seven starts. But it’s not just the two newbies that have turned Mourinho’s men into the mean machine they are today. Classy, but previously lightweight midfielders like Oscar, Hazard and Willian are ‘putting in a shift’* every week. These stars now hunt back when the Blues haven’t got the ball, fighting to regain possession before setting off into space seeking yet another golden goal. The Bridge Boys are now five points clear of second-placed Man City, and six beyond Southampton in third whose precocious bubble burst at White Hart Lane, thanks to a solitary Christian Eriksen goal, moving Spurs up to a heady sixth - one bragging point above bitter rivals Arsenal. He’s got to be one of the deadliest, most reliable strikers in world football today. At 114 minutes per

goal (anoraks please note) Sergio Aguero holds the all-time best Prem record, always scoring important goals when needed. On Saturday, the Argentinian’s killer goal finally put fighting Villa away 2 - 0, who had held out until eight minutes from time. But Yaya Toure’s exquisite strike put celebrating City on their way, compounded by Aguero’s rasping shot two minutes from the end, the win then leap-frogging City ahead of Southampton. Go fourth and rejoice! Man U have won two games on the trot… Heady stuff for the Reds to climb to some sort of respectability at last in fourth place. This was achieved by the unbelievable feat of narrowly beating Everton 2 -1, that after just beating West Ham 2 1: both matches were at the Theatre of Dreams, only recently a Nest of Nightmares. In truth it was a terrific performance from the Red Devil’s goalkeeper David De Gea who won it for United, even saving a Leighton Baines penalty - and nobody does that, pal… Loudmouth Louis lorded it: ‘I told my players zat zey are not playing well - but we are already fourth in the table! So what is coming when we play well? And we won without Wyan – hey, maybe we don’t need him, see what happens when my Dutch boy Robin is capitan? OK, you little Inglanders, zat is my joke - but we came third in the World Cup, you know…’ Tipped for great things this year (by me and other unreliable sources), luckless losers Everton are in a sorry run and currently sit unbelievably fourth from bottom (I blame the ‘Z’ Cars theme they run out to, it’s sooo sixties..). Now superb new defender John Stones is out injured and will miss England’s next game. Surely the Toffees won’t stay stuck down ‘dere

with all that class – eh, Roberto la? Adam’s first! Rel-Eve-d Red faces were revealed at Anfield where new top Kop favourite Lallana scored his maiden goal in the 2 -1 win over improving West Brom. Remember that stupid Saturday night TV game when people have to get through body-shaped holes? That’s what it’s like watching Barmy Balotelli trying to emulate Luis Suarez - but it’s impossible because Suarez never stopped running, while Mario stands still waiting for the ball – very un-Liverpoollike. Dropped post-Basel, Balo came on as sub, but the big Italian needs a goal and can’t buy one – is he in the wrong shop, Brendan? Three fours? Down in de Dreaded Drop Department three teams share four points: Newcastle, Burnley and …. Quite Probably Relegated, whose players were slated on Sunday’s Sky TV post-match review by pundits Graeme Souness and Phil Neville. The crime? The heinous not ‘putting in a shift’* on Sunday against reviving West Ham - and if Loftus Road’s overpaid, underworked superstars don’t soon start putting one in, Harry’s Hoops will be going straight back from whence they came. By the time you read this, England will have hopefully despatched minnows San Marino at Wembley in the Euro 2016 qualifiers, before travelling to Estonia on Sunday 12th - a much bigger affair. England's 2-0 win over Switzerland got the country going well in their opening match last month. Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has replaced injured John Stones in England's squad. *’putting in a shift’ is the new media buzzword for working hard all the game. Don’t forget to drop it into your footie chats to sound cool…
