PILOT IN CRASH RIDDLE COC KPI T “ C LO S E D ” I N A LP S T R AG EDY ALEX TRELINSKI

T

he co-pilot of the Germanwings plane en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf that crashed into the French Alps on Tuesday appeared to want to "destroy the plane", according to French officials yesterday. The crash took the lives of all 150 passengers and crew aboard, including 50 Spaniards(two of them from the Murcia region) and 72 German nationals. Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin, citing information from the "black box" voice recorder, said the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz(pictured), 28, was alone in the cockpit. He intentionally started a descent while the pilot was locked out. Mr Robin said there was "absolute silence in the cockpit" as the pilot fought to re-enter it. Air traffic controllers made repeated attempts to contact the aircraft, but to no avail, he said. Passengers could be heard screaming just before the crash, he added. Lubitz was alive until the final impact, the prosecutor said. He said the co-pilot was "not known by us" to have any links to extremism or terrorism. Meanwhile, the head of Lufthansa, the carrier that owns Germanwings, said the pilot had undergone intensive training and "was 100% fit to fly without any caveats". "We have no findings at all about what motivated the pilot to do this terrible deed," Carsten Spohr said. The second "black box" - that records flight data - has still not been found. The tragedy happened close to the town of Seyne-lesAlpes, which was visited by Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy on Wednesday, along with French President, Francois Hollande and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, as they thanked emergency workers at the site. Mariano Rajoy declared three days of national mourning in Spain, with a minute's silence observed at noon on Wednesday at countless points around the country, including both houses of parliament in Madrid as well as locally at public offices across Alicante Province and Murcia, including Lorca and Águilas. 100 people gathered at Lorca’s Plaza de España to pay tribute with mayor, Francisco Jodar, saying that he had spoken to and passed on condolences to the widow of Javier Moreno Navarro, who co-owned a trucking company with

his brothers. Águilas mayor Bartolome Hernandez led the minute’s silence and tribute to their dead citizen, local baker, Fernando Martínez Rubio. Within the Murcia region, San Javier(pictured) and Torre Pacheco were just some of the many municipalities that observed the remembrance on Wednesday. In Alicante Province, Elche’s mayor, Mercedes Alonso, said it was a tragedy that affected everyone, whilst Alicante mayor, Miguel Valor, stated that the disaster was “a blow to everybody in Europe.”

HASHTAG FAIL

RUNAWAY CAR

Two Moroccan drug dealers who fled by speedboat from Villajoyosa were arrested in the San Fulgencio area by the Guardia Civil and charged with public health crimes, after over a thousand kilos of hashish was seized. The two men, aged 21 and 34, caught the attention of the Guardia’s sea surveillance system, SIVE, when their boat was spotted travelling at very high speed last week near Cala El Charco, Villajoyosa on the northern Costa Blanca. Officers suspected the vessel might be carrying drugs, and so they tried to intercept them, with the smugglers panicking and throwing all the packets of hashish into the water as they turned tail in a southerly direction. The speedboat, with two powerful 300 horsepower engines landed at a beach in the Guardamar area, with the incompetent peddlers fleeing on foot, before they were arrested in the San Fulgencio municipality, and then hauled before an Orihuela judge for a hearing.

The Guardia Civil say that a brake failure could have caused a spectacular five car pile-up on the N332 between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola early last Tuesday evening which saw three people seriously injured. The drama unfolded at around 6.30pm close to the derelict Rocas Blancas Hotel, with a southbound travelling car apparently losing control and hitting cars coming in the opposite carriageway, before coming to a rest when it collided with a wall of a restaurant. The vehicle caught fire but the driver was pulled out by rescue workers. Four vehicles were hit by the oncoming car, with some of them turning over in the incident, which saw all the injured victims taken to either Elche General Hospital or the Vinalopó Hospital.

TRAIN AND ROAD BOOST

STORMY WEATHER

Getting Elche and the surrounding area linked up to the high speed AVE train service is a “priority”, according to national development minister, Ana Pastor. Speaking at Sunday's official opening of the first section of Elche's new southern ring road, Pastor said that hooking up a new Elche-area based station to the Monforte del Cid to Murcia City AVE line was budgeted at six and a half million euros, and work would also need to be done on linking up the new station with the rest of the local transport infrastructure. Currently people in the Vega Baja region wanting to use the AVE have to use stations at Alicante or Villena. No formal timetable was mentioned. Pastor also talked about an investment of 265 million euros for new road projects for Alicante Province, though it was unclear how much of this was merely a restatement of previous announcements, though the Valencian President, Alberto Fabra, who was also at Sunday's ceremony, said that nearly two million euros had been earmarked for upgrading the road between Elche and Santa Pola into a dual carriageway. The route is especially busy with tourist traffic during the summer months, and a tender for the first part of the project taking in nearly one and a half kilometres will be advertised shortly. The work will include building a new network of roundabouts and pavements/cycle-routes, in addition to doubling the carriageways on the existing route.

Pilar de la Horadada’s Mayor, José Fidel Ros, has called for help from the Provincial Directorate of Coasts after fierce winds and storms at the end of last week caused damage to several of the region's beaches. The Mayor has sent a report with photos of the damage which has also affected a number of walkways including the Paseo Marítimo del Sardinero, in Torre de la Horadada. Wind speeds hit over 80 kilometres an hour in Torrevieja, and similar speeds were clocked around the area last Thursday and Friday. Work on the beaches on the Orihuela Costa was suspended with the council having to stop work on installing new walkways as well as the erection of the beach bars. Rocks, seaweed, and debris were swept onto a number of beaches across the area, with the Santiago Bernabéu beach being one of the worst hit around Santa Pola. The bad weather came at a bad time with the San Jose holiday weekend, with the Mar Menor region also suffering gust of up to 70 kilometres an hour.

RULE BRITANIA ONE FOR THE ROAD

One of the world’s biggest and newest cruise ships, the MV Britania, called in for a stop in Cartagena last Tuesday. The P&O-operated cruiser entered service at the start of March, having been launched by the Queen in Southampton. The maiden voyage, which is taking in over stops across Spain, as well as France and Italy, has attracted over three and a half thousand passengers, who are able to enjoy 26 bars, restaurants, and cafes, run by chefs like Marco Pierre White as well as a Cookery Club run by James Martin.

A drunk driver will never forget last Friday night when Alicante police pursued his car which was going down the wrong way on a one-way street. The 32 year old man attracted the attention of officers when he jumped a red light at a junction and the chase was on, as the drunk sped the wrong way down one-way streets to avoid capture. He abandoned his car in the old part of the city and tried to escape on foot as the cops followed in pursuit and eventually caught the intoxicated fugitive. His problems increased still further as he had no driving license (which a court had previously taken away from him) and he had stolen the car (pictured) in the first place! Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil clocked and arrested a motorist speeding at 223 kms an hour in a 100 kms an hour limit stretch of the N332 in Benidorm last week. The incident happened in the middle of Tuesday afternoon,

RAJOY BLOW FAKE NOTES

Results from Andalucia’s regional elections last Sunday were bad for the national governing Partido Popular whose vote collapsed, losing 17 seats from the previous election, with 33 seats left in the regional parliament. It was a good night though for the PSOE Socialists, who have held power in the region for more than three decades, as lead by Susana Díaz, they won 35% percent of the vote, earning them 47 seats, eight seats shy of an outright majority. The new left-wing anti-austerity party, Podemos, bagged 15 seats for the party after their first elections in Andalucia, whilst another new entity, the centre party Ciudadanos, won nine seats in their first contest in Spain’s southern region. The party saw the results as a major attack by voters on Spain’s bipartisan political system. “There may be people who will read the news tomorrow and think they’ve won,” said Albert Rivera, leader of Ciudadanos. “But we all know the two-party system has died.” Regional and local elections across the Valencia and Murcia regions take place in May, and Mariano Rajoy has to call a General Election before the end of the year. Rajoy’s reaction at a PP national executive meeting on Monday (pictured) was that the Partido Popular actually polled 300 thousand more votes than they got in Andalucia in last year’s European elections, and that the result should not be translated into a Spain-wide verdict. The Prime Minister added that he thought that 2015 would end well for his party.

HORSE BEFORE CART

Torre Pacheco police have seized 67 thousand euros in fake 50 euro notes, after a high speed car chase from Roldan to Los Castejones. Police had been carrying checks in Roldan after a spate of recent robberies, and at a routine stop, a car with three people in it sped off. The pursuit ended at Los Castejones when two passengers ran away on foot, Local horse and cart drivers, known as the Carreteros, but the driver stayed at the wheel, and he was arrested as his took part in a special parade as they were celebrated in by counterfeit cash was found in a bag. The roundabout on the CV905 Dolores road, which links up to the Rafal and Sports City roads has been specially decorated with a cart as a centrepiece to celebrate the Vega Baja tradition.

POSTIE RETURNS More people are employing workers on illegal contracts or not even making any form of declaration, according to latest figures from the Valencia region labour inspectors. Returns for 2014, showed that inspectors discovered 9,800 cases of illegal employment, some five hundred more than the previous year. Inspectors are planning to target the hospitality industry from May with more surprise visits to premises during the evening and at the weekend,

Postal home deliveries have resumed in the La Regia area of the Orihuela Costa, but at a cost. Community mailboxes have been erected there followed last autumn’s slashing of Correos door to door services, but local people have to pay for them. Orihuela council has struck a deal with Correos for nine community boxes in Campoamor; four in La Zenia; and two each in Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca. Community and residents associations will have to stump up the cost for these facilities, with the council and Correos agreeing on suitable locations for the new boxes.

TURTLE WALL COMES BENIDORM TRIO FREED TUMBLING BAN DOWN

Three rescued loggerhead turtles were released into the sea next to Paseo de Juan Aparicio in Torrevieja last Wednesday, and they’ve been equipped with the latest technology for experts to keep track of them. Since 1991, 300 loggerhead turtles have been saved, and nursed back to health by El Saler Granja in Valencia, 90 percent of which have been released back into the Mediterranean. Most of the rescued turtles are spotted by fishing boats, with many suffering from having ingested fishing hooks. Scientists are now using satellite technology to keep track of the turtles once they’ve been released to learn more about their migratory habits.

WILL HE STAY

An Illegal wall at the Bellavista 1 urbanisation that blocked access between Cabo Roig and Campoamor, leading to a half hour detour for pedestrians and cyclists to Aquamarina Beach, was pulled down on Tuesday. Orihuela council sent in workers to remove the structure at a cost of two thousand euros, with the bill being passed onto the 52 home owners in the area. A lengthy legal battle led to this week’s final act after access to Aqua Beach was illegally blocked off by the residents of the urbanisation the best part of 20 years ago.

SAFETY FIRST

Benidorm's hotels are starting to call time on drunken British stag and hen parties, by either banning the groups or charging much higher security deposits after damage by the excitable guests. Sister hotels the Marconfort Essence and Marconfort Benidorm Suites are the latest to clamp down on large parties. The crackdown follows a recent refurbishment at both hotels, as well as complaints from other guests about groups' rowdy behaviour. A spokesman for Marconfort hotels confirmed: "We don't accept stag and hen parties in our hotels." Last year the RH group, which operates six hotels in Benidorm, also introduced a "no stags and hens" policy. This year has already seen a rise in the number of stag and hen parties in the resort since last year, down to the much better exchange rate between the pound and euro. Meanwhile, a Benidorm-bound stag party were ordered off a Ryanair flight after they were accused of being 'disruptive' and reducing an air steward to tears because of their behaviour. The group of 20 revellers from Wrexham in North Wales said they had paid more than £4,000 for the weekend break to Benidorm, in order to celebrate Wayne Roberts' wedding next month. After they made a male flight attendant cry, the pilot called the police and ordered the party to leave the plane - which was due to take off from Manchester Airport and fly to Alicante-Elche airport. Ryanair defended the decision and said it 'will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time

ALL OVER FOR TRINIDAD Singer-songwriter, Jackson Browne (pictured), will be one of the star names at this year's San Javier Jazz Festival. The 66 year old is best known for his version of the song, Stay, and will be performing tracks from his latest album, Standing in the Breach. Dianne Reeves, who won the prestigious Grammy award for best jazz vocal album of 2014 is another of the names that have been confirmed for the event in July. The full programme will be announced in early April, as well as details of ticket sales.

CAR SPREE

A Moroccan teenager has been arrested by San Javier police after stealing from at least seven cars(one pictured) during one evening in the Avenida de La Union area of the town. Cops pounced on the 17 year old last Saturday night after a tip-off that somebody was behaving suspiciously in a car, and cops found him trying to remove the radio with a screwdriver. The Moroccan was found not to have a residence permit, but cops uncovered a whole range of stolen goods including car stereo units; lighters; sunglasses; as well as four knives and a variety of screwdrivers. The Guardia Civil are said to be interested in chatting to him about 17 other robberies that they suspect he may have been involved with.

Spain is amongst the top countries in Europe for road safety with 36 fatalities for every million inhabitants, according to a new European Commission report. Spain was among six EU countries with fewer than 40 fatalities per million inhabitants and showed greater improvement compared to other countries, according to the report. Though the number of road deaths remained constant at 36 deaths per million inhabitants for both 2013 and 2014, Spain has seen a reduction in fatalities by 32 percent since 2010, when the country reported 53 deaths per million.

TAX QUIZ

A ten year investigation into an alleged four million euro plus fraud over the building of Benidorm' Terra Mitica theme park hit the Valencia city courthouse on Monday. 38 people are answering charges of fraud in a case that will be heard through till mid-September. Prosecutors are asking for jail terms of between seven and ten years for the four alleged ring-leaders in a plot that saw the falsification of tax returns amounting to four point four million euros.

The ex- San Fulgencio PSOE Mayor, Trinidad Martinez, has been given a 17 months jail sentence over a corruption scandal involving the building of flats in La Marina. Martinez was given the longest sentence for a “planning” crime along with three former councillors and three council officers. Eight flats were eventually built on land five years ago and sold off privately after been designated to be used as a sports accommodation in the style of an Olympic village. The land sale raised over four million euros in 2005. Martinez was looking to head the PSOE list for San Fulgencio at May’s local elections, but she told the Informacion newspaper that the verdict signalled an end to her political career. She added that she was shocked by the news and that she planned to appeal, adding that she regarded the judge’s ruling as “unfair and confusing”, as well as blaming the rival Partido Popular for her problems.

SLUSHED UP

Two former treasurers of Spain's ruling People's Party are among six people who should face trial over allegations that the party ran a slush fund, the country's high court said on Monday. After a long-running probe into the slush fund allegations, investigating magistrate Pablo Ruz said former party treasurers Luis Barcenas (pictured) and Alvaro Lapuerta and four other suspects should be tried for tax evasion. Ruz also recommended that Barcenas and Lapuerta face additional charges of embezzlement. The allegations that the PP had a slush fund bankrolled by payments from companies continue to embarrass the government in a year in which Spain holds regional and general elections, with the PP doing badly in the weekend vote in Andalucia.

Fingers are being crossed for better weather this weekend for the postponed San Isidro murals celebration, which was put on hold after a poor forecast last weekend. Council officials took a late decision to delay the event in Orihulea City, which will start today (Friday) at 5.00pm in La Guernica. The festival commemorates the famous local poet, Miguel Hernandez, with 42 houses set to get a new look from artists from around the country.

ARE YOU LOATHSOME TONIGHT?

MRS S walked into the bedroom last Saturday evening and found me spread-eagled on the floor. 'Oh, my good gosh!' she exclaimed. 'I'm calling an ambulance.' I leaped to my feet in shock. 'An ambulance?' I gasped. 'Why do you need an ambulance? Are you ill? I think I'll call an ambulance.' We both wrestled with the phone, each of us trying to call an ambulance for the other. 'Let go of the phone!' Mrs S and I said in unison. 'I'm trying to dial 999.' 'No, I'll do it,' we said together. 'But you're the one who's poorly,' we harmonised. There had obviously been a misunderstanding of the situation. We sat down on the bed and quivered with a surfeit of adrenalin. 'What did you want an ambulance for?' I asked when we'd both calmed down a bit. 'I thought you'd collapsed,' said Mrs S. I shook my head. 'There's nothing wrong with me. I feel fine. I thought YOU were the one who needed the paramedics.' Mrs S stared at me. 'Then why were you lying stretched out on the floor like that?' 'Oh, that,' I said dismissively. 'I was looking under the bed for Elvis.' Mrs S looked at me as though I had suddenly gone insane. Then she dived for the phone and managed to twice stab at the No.9 button before I grabbed her hand.

But I must have grabbed too hard for she let go of the phone and the flaming thing smashed me in the mouth.

what had happened.' Mrs S snapped: 'No, I meant before that when I said that I wanted my toenails painted before leaving

gloves.' 'That's not funny,' I mumbled through swollen lips. 'I agree,' said Mrs S as she hobbled out of the hospital

'No, no, I tell a lie,' I continued. 'The first Elvis disc I bought was Heartbreak Hotel.' The taxi driver applied

As I fell to the floor I became tangled in the cord of the heavy bedside lamp which flew off the table and landed on Mrs S's foot. We were both shrieking in pain at this point. Our cries were loud enough to alert our next-door neighbour who . . . er . . . phoned for an ambulance. 'I have never been so embarrassed in my life,' grumbled Mrs S as we sat in A&E waiting to be seen. 'Me, too,' I concurred. 'There was absolutely no need for the paramedics to laugh when we explained

for the hospital and you managed to spill my red varnish over your shirt. The ambulance men thought I'd shot you.' There was a brief silence before Mrs S commented: 'I don't think I want to live with you any longer.' Anyway, the casualty doctor examined us and said; 'Nothing serious, folks. You, Mr Silver, have a telephone-shaped bruise on your mouth. Mrs Silver, you have a lamp-shaped bruise on your foot. Might I suggest that you two bruisers start wearing boxing

cubicle. 'I'll make supper,' I offered as we rode home in a taxi. 'Thank you,' she said. 'I must admit that I'm all shook up.' I thought for a moment. 'No, Hound Dog was the first Elvis record I bought. All Shook Up was the second.' 'That's it,' groaned Mrs S. 'I cannot take this anymore.' She tapped on the cab driver's glass partition. 'Forget that address my husband gave you. I want to go to my friend Phyllis's house.'

his brakes. 'Look, will you two make up your minds. First you want to go home. Then you want to go to Phyllis's house -- whoever the hell she is! Now you want me to drop you both at some ghastly-sounding guest house called The Heartbreak Hotel.' 'No, you've got it wrong,' I pointed out to the irate driver. 'Look here, mate,' he said. 'All I know is that I've been ferrying around drunken nutters and nutty drunks all night. All I want is to go home. I've got to get up

early in the morning to go to church and I don't want to turn up so exhausted that I start crying in the chapel.' 'Hey!' I said. 'I think Elvis took that record to number . . .' 'Not another word!' hissed Mrs S. An hour later, the Silvers were tucked up in bed, not speaking. Then I heard her sigh: 'Okay, why?' 'Why what?' I asked. 'Why were you looking for Elvis under our bed?' It was my turn to sigh as my brain tripped into memory mode. 'When I was young I had some of Mr Presley's old 78s and his Love Me Tender EP . . .' 'Yes, I remember,' interjected Mrs S. 'You brought them with you to play on our honeymoon.' '. . . well, when we moved house later on I thought I'd taken the discs with us. But they weren't on the removal van when we got to the other end.' Mrs S looked aghast. 'But we moved house 30 years ago. Why were you looking for your Elvis records TONIGHT?' I shrugged. 'I search for them every night. You just never know when they might turn up.' Mrs S draped a comforting arm around my shoulders and whispered: 'I desperately want a divorce.' We were awoken the next morning by a tapping on the bedroom door. 'Did you two sleep okay in my spare room?' asked a voice. 'Only I'm off to church now. Can I drop you anywhere?'

BREAKING SAFER SWIMS BAD Torrevieja’s beaches will get lifeguard protection this Easter holiday period after cost cutting led to no cover during the last two years. The cost to the council of providing the service is 30 thousand euros for the fortnight franchise, but other areas of the Costa Blanca as well as the Costa Calida have lifeguard provision already within their existing contracts.

JUST AN IDEA

Alicante Province's almond growers are hopeful of a good crop in 2015, after two years of poor crops due to frost and the drought. Almond prices have soured after the disappointing harvests but local farmers say they are confidant of making up for some of the recent losses.

UP BUT DOWN

Tourists coming to Spain are on the up again based on the figures for the first two months of 2015, with the exception of the Valencian region including the Costa Blanca which actually showed a marginal fall. Returns from the Industry Ministry show that six and a half million people visited Spain last January and February, which was a rise of four point five percent on the returns for the same period in 2014. UK tourists led the way again with one point two million visitors, a hike of two point seven percent. There were big rises in tourist figures for Andalucia and the Balearic Islands, but the Valencia regional figure was down nought point seven percent on 2014’s first two months, at 534 thousand.

A 61 year old Elche man has been arrested by the National Police on drugs charges after a two month operation. The alleged peddler, who has a criminal record, was putting together a small-scale cocaine distribution network, but was caught red-handed by officers as he was trying to sell the drug. 60 grams of cocaine; six knives; over three thousand euros in cash; weighing scales; and two mobile phones were amongst the items seized.

CAUGHT IN THE CANARIES

A convicted killer has been arrested, days after he appeared on a list of Britain's most wanted fugitives who are believed to be on the run in Spain. Shane Walford, 38, was detained in the Canary Islands by police last Saturday morning. His arrest comes days after he featured in a list published by the National Crime Agency (NCA) as part of Operation Captura(as featured on The Courier front-page last week), which focuses on wanted suspects who are thought to have fled to Spain. Walford, a former soldier, was jailed in 2010 for the manslaughter of an off-duty fireman while on leave from the army. He killed fatherof-two Paul Gibbons with a single punch outside a bar in Coventry. The former boxer was imprisoned for four and a half years and released after serving half of his sentence but was recalled to prison in August 2013 after breaking the terms of his licence.

Orihuela's health department has put in suggestion boxes at all of its health centres, as well as the Vega Baja Hospital. They are looking for feedback from patients on the service they get and what improvements can be made.

A Costa del Sol-based credit card fraud operation which targeted mainly British victims, has been smashed by the National Police. Eight people, including the gang leader have been arrested, with one of those detained being apprehended in Benidorm. 21 cars were seized by the police, said to have been bought by the fruits of the cloning con, along with a variety of cloning equipment

BOBBIES NOT BEATING

Orihuela's local police will not be working any overtime over the busy Easter holiday period, with local commanders saying they can’t afford it and that they are owed money from the local authority stretching back years. Police chiefs say they've not had any satisfactory replies from the council as to what they plan to do to about it.

DOGGY TREAT

Dog owners in the San Pedro del Pinatar area have a new area where they can let their pets run around safely without the need for a lead. The ICA church is at Calle Urbano Arregui 23 w/ C/ Pilar de la Horadada, N-332 Salinas Exit, on the Torrevieja by-pass, and either ramp will bring you to the church door.

A San Pedro del Pinatar teenager is heading a nationwide campaign called “A Coffee for Guillen” in which people are asked to donate 1.20 euros, the price of a coffee, by sending a text message, which will then go towards research into rare diseases. Guillen Carrasco suffers from muscular dystrophy and is one of 200 sufferers in Spain. However, there are thousands of other people who still await diagnosis over rare diseases that they may have. Anyone who wants to make a donation can send the message Guillen to 28014. All the money collected will go to the Isabel Gemio Foundation, which promotes research into rare diseases. See the official web page www.uncafeporguillen.com for further information. Guillen has already appeared on one of the country’s biggest TV chat shows, and a gala dinner is also being organized, to raise even more money.

WHY USE A REGULATED FINANCIAL ADVISER?

Mark Harrison Partner AES International

It never ceases to amaze us at AES International, at the number of people who ask us why it is important they use a regulated financial adviser. It is tempting to answer this with another question: would you use an unlicensed dentist, doctor, lawyer or any other professional? A better answer, though, would be that seeking professional advice is absolutely critical to avoiding catastrophic disaster when it comes to financial planning, too. So why is it so imperative you receive regulated financial advice? Protection To be regulated, a firm needs to be a registered legal entity. It needs financial resources (known as capital adequacy), professionally qualified individuals, and systems and controls that are adequate for looking after clients. This means that you can have confidence that the company will not simply disappear. Fair treatment Regulated firms must follow strict rules ensuring the advice they provide is suitable for your needs, appropriate, and fair. In the UK this falls under an Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) initiative called "Treating Customers Fairly". Qualified advice In the UK, the FCA requires all financial advisers hold financial qualifications equivalent to at least a Level 4 qualification within the national Qualifications and Credit Framework. This means the adviser must be educated in financial advice more or less to university degree level. It is worth asking your financial adviser what qualifications he holds to ensure you are getting professional advice from someone suitably qualified. All AES advisers are hold UK Financial

qualifications. Fair recourse to complain By using a regulated financial adviser you will have a proper course to ask for redress if you feel a product has been mis-sold to you or you have lost out financially from having received poor advice. Regulated firms have well documented, careful, comprehensive and prompt complaints handling procedures. If you are not happy with their response you may be able to complain to an Ombudsman (independent adjudicator), or in some cases directly to the regulator who will investigate to ensure you get fair treatment. Check the advisory company's credentials All countries have a financial markets regulator – AES is authorised and regulated in 36 different jurisdictions, including Spain, which means we have met and agreed to maintain high standards in relation to both providing you with financial planning, and in administering the financial affair of our clients. We believe the gold standard of regulation is that of the UK where our regulator is the FCA. As we focus on the international market we export this best practice into other markets so our clients get the peace of mind and security to know we put their interests first. In our experience, many international 'IFAs' are only licensed for basic insurance services, often operating well outside their scope of authorisation, whilst some are not regulated at all. It is always worth checking and indeed double-checking the exact categories of business that firms are licensed to conduct, and should there be any doubt at all, AES International will be able to clarify the position. CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

The whole reason why my wife Jean and I got into animal rescue, was because we wanted to save animals that were due to be put to sleep in pounds up and down the country. We have spent two years now, rescuing and rehabilitating some of the most severely abused animals I have ever seen and now, with the completion of one of three of our kennels, we are delighted to say, that this weekend we will be saving the lives of seven dogs, that had been due to be put to sleep this week. I cannot wait to meet them and I know they will love the fantastic facilities we have created. All of them are coming out of very, very poor conditions and they will all want for nothing. Little do they know, but their lives are about to take a dramatic turn for the better and there is nothing better than giving something to a dog, who has had nothing all of their lives. Work has now begun on kennel two and after this. kennel three will be completed. This will give us the opportunity to save the lives

of dogs for many decades to come here in Spain who are waiting to be put to sleep. When we started our charity, two years ago, we always wanted it to become a legacy, that would last and last and by us putting these really critical facilities in place now, I see no reason why they will not be still in place and still saving the lives of animals in 60 or 70 years time. When kennel one was completed, I just sat on a rock and stared at it for what seemed like an eternity. I was just so excited to see that after all the hard work, such a great house for dogs to rest their weary heads had finally become a reality. Each kennel will be fitted

KENNEL ONE COMPLETED! with soft vet bedding and I never wanted the dogs to be locked up, as they would be in dog pounds, so they can go into their cosy kennels if they wish, or if they fancy a wander or a run, they just walk out of it and onto the land which is all safely fully fenced. They have ultimate peace and quiet there, being surrounded by mountains

and nature. My wish was to give them the very best, which we have done and they will all feel like they have left hell at the weekend and entered heaven. I’m just so excited! We would like to thank you very dear Courier readers for all of your help, support and donations and please remember, for those

CAMERON CHICKENS OUT

What a ragbag of formats UK voters have been left with over the TV debates in the run up to the General Election, and that’s all down to David Cameron and the Tories. The strange thing is that they shouldn’t be running scared, especially as five years ago, it was them that were pushing Gordon Brown for the TV debates, and we got three very good ones, with Cameron doing really well, alongside Nick Clegg. There is always the view that if you are the current party in charge, you don’t want to give your opponents a chance to stick the knife in, but since David Cameron is such a good performer, and Ed Miliband isn’t, then it does leave your head scratching somewhat. That’s on top of the fact that the Tories have a good tale to tell, having in partnership with the Lib Dems, taken the country from the brink of economic collapse in 2010, to one where all the economic indicators are extremely positive. Add a popular George Osborne budget last week, which left Labour on their backsides, and opinion polls that show the Tories miles ahead on economic competence compared to Miliband and Balls, and perhaps you are left with the conclusion that Conservative strategists feel that things are

turning their way and that they don’t want a TV gaffe to spoil things. There is in fact no real evidence to support any theory that the 2010 debates influenced many voters, with a number of studies by academics unable to find proof of major changes in people’s voting intentions. If you remember, Nick Clegg came over as quite a star putting the media into a frenzy,

yet his performances in front of the camera did not translate themselves into extra votes for the Lib Dems. I think, contrary to what most politicians like to believe, that pretty much everybody knows right now which way they are going to vote, with only a handful of “floaters” to go at during an election campaign. As a viewer, I would have liked to watch Cameron and Miliband get at each

other, but having seven party leaders this coming Thursday on ITV all stood as ducks in a row will lead to little or no illumination for the viewer, which is exactly what the Tories probably want. TV doesn’t produce enough thoughtprovoking political documentaries, but there was an absolute ace in the hole last week on Channel Four from former Equalities boss, Trevor Philips, called “Things We Don’t Say About Race That Are True”. It examined racial issues in the UK and essentially said that people for years have been too scared to talk about facts and problems, because they have been worried as being branded as racists. Everybody should try and see this programme, and even if you don’t agree with everything it says, I think it puts a finger right on the reason why older white British voters feel they have been let down by the political establishment and have jumped into the UKIP camp. The Tories, Labour, and the Lib Dems have been too scared (and still are) to talk about race and immigration for fear of upsetting people, but all they have done is to fuel the rise of a party that rightly or wrongly resonates amongst voters that claim to be disenfranchised.

I DESPAIR FOR HUMANITY

MORE and more often I despair about the human race - multiple bombings killing innocent people, people prepared to lie at the drop of a hat to further their own ends, people prepared to sexually abuse innocent teenagers, people prepared to kill and maim without any conscience. The list grows ever longer. But there was one incident which happened last week which showed me that humanity has not moved on one jot from when people gathered for hours around the gallows or Madame Guillotine to see a hanging or a person´s head being chopped off. It happened in Telford, Shropshire, where police were trying to talk a distressed man from jumping from the top of a tall building. People gathered below and then started taunting him to jump. These were not only stupid teenagers but adults too, some using cameras and phones to film the incident and the moment he took the advice from below and jump. One eye witness said: "It was almost like a form of entertainment for them...kids were screaming, running to the other side to see if they could get a better view. It was just so sad." It didn´t end there, because after the incident stupid comments were posted on social media sites. Some people are so thoughtless and selfish and in situations like this seem overtaken by apparent mass hysteria. Oh for a more caring world! Recently I wrote about how the mighty fall as people in high positions in society are caught out by their own greed. Last week we heard about three British judges caught with their pants down having viewed

porn on their official IT accounts. Again, how the mighty fall, thanks to their own stupidity! District Judge Timothy Bowles, Immigration Judge Warren Grant and Deputy District Judge and Recorder Peter Bullock have been removed from office. A fourth judge, Recorder A n d r e w M a w , resigned before the conclusion of the inquiry. Had they used their home computers they would not have suffered this humiliation. It was the display of their total lack of judgment which led to their downfall. How can a judge with a taste for viewing porn be able to exercise the right moral judgment on anyone accused of a sex crime? What was it I just wrote about despairing of the human race? Still going down the road of depravity, we turn to the appalling case of the British Airways pilot who, it is believed, sexually assaulted at least 50 children in Kenya and Uganda. He volunteered to work among charities, including one running an orphanage for children whose parents had died from AIDS. In July 2013, he was arrested by police after an anonymous tip-off. He was charged with indecent assault and possessing indecent images, including some of children in the orphanage having a bath. In

August that same year, shortly before he was due to appear in court, he killed himself. It later emerged that he was first arrested over an indecent assault allegation in the UK in 2001. Prosecutors ruled there was insufficient evidence to charge him. Ironically, he won BA's Corporate

This whole area would be far easier if would-be whistle-blowers knew they would be properly listened to and action taken against any wrongdoers rather than the whistle-blowers being victimised. In the 21st century should any of this even need discussing? One of the most sickening

Responsibility Award "for dedicating hours of his time" to charity work. Now it's alleged that British Airways was alerted having been told about concerns over the pilot´s behaviour, and victims are now suing the airline for compensation. We hear so often about private companies and public bodies being told of people´s suspicions and they are ignored or are simply swept under the carpet. An example needs to be set and if BA knew about their rogue pilot and failed to act, the courts should hammer the company so hard it can´t pay a dividend for a year. Shareholders might insist their management take far more robust action to ensure their staff have no ulterior motives.

stories to emerge in the last week was the dispute between a pharmaceutical company and the UK government over the price of a new vaccine against a deadly form of meningitis. A year ago, expert advisers for the government recommended the meningitis B vaccine be given to babies from two months old across the UK on the NHS. But a costeffective price has not yet been agreed with the manufacturers. This is affecting nearly two thousand children every year, a tenth of whom tragically lose their lives. Meningitis is a bacterial infection that usually affects children under the age of one. There are about 1,870 cases of meningitis B each year in the UK. This wrangling over the price of

an effective vaccine has been going on for the best part of a year and in that time babies have died. It is fatal in one in 10 cases - and about one in four of those who survive are left with long-term problems, such as amputation, deafness, epilepsy and learning difficulties. This obviously costs v a s t sums of money to the NHS. The public should n o t accept a situation where w r a n g l i n g o v e r something so vital and where babies are dying is left to drag on for a year. I would put these people in a room and tell them to reach agreement in five minutes or they would be shot. They would manage to agree long before the five minutes were up. Bit drastic, perhaps (maybe we´ll allow them 10 minutes!), but you get my point. It´s yet another case of humanity failing. Want another example of humanity going down the pan? Well here it is. A woman conning her former husband into believing he was the father of her IVF baby. This wretched London businesswoman went with her then husband to Spain for IVF treatment where he donated his sperm. A few months later she went back to the clinic with a former boyfriend who donated his sperm, with which she was

impregnated. She then pretended the child which resulted was the husband´s and he paid more than £80,000 in maintenance. Now this evil bitch has been ordered to pay £39,000 in damages at the High Court. I wonder how many DNA tests on children would show infidelity? A good few, I would hazard a guess! We´ve been hearing over the past few months of the UK government getting tough over people owning dangerous dogs, and threatening owners with harsh prison sentences. What a joke! Two brothers in Leominster admitted owning dogs which were dangerously out of control. One of the dogs, an American red nose pit bull cross, died shortly after the attack. The judge ordered the other, a Staffordshire bull terrier cross, to be destroyed. The victim has had five operations since the attack and has ongoing nerve and tendon damage to both legs and her right arm. A witness who saw the attack said there was "blood everywhere". The court heard police had given the brothers warnings about dogs in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012. So what happened in court? Five years jail? Seven years? Not a bit of it, despite the government wanting to get tough on dangerous dogs. The brothers were given suspended sentences - something I would stop forthwith. The latest figures say that 200,000 people in Britain alone suffer bites from dog attacks annually. Some attacks are fatal. So much trouble is caused by dogs. Mess in streets and in parks and gardens; pee all over pavements; noise from neighbours' barking dogs; and of course, the danger to the public from dogs with a killer instinct.

INTERNET COURTESY

I am a big fan of the internet, using it every day! I use it on my phone, laptop and tablet and on the whole I am very happy with it. I can´t imagine how my life was before computers and the internet, although it only takes a short walk down memory lane to remind ourselves about how things use to be, but that´s a different story. The thing about the internet is that it has the possibility to be anonymous, as many people hide their true identity and can become ´trolls´ who are people who send abusive messages to others. There are laws that deal with these sorts of people although most celebrities tend to just take it in their stride and accept it as a part of their success. Trolls are one thing, as they are weak minded individuals who really cannot have anything interesting in their lives so they have to live out some sick fantasy verbally abusing people, however there are other types of ignorant people on the internet and it is those that I want to

talk about this week. People who advertise on the internet are, on the whole very polite and only too willing to help you with any information they feel necessary. That is sometimes however, until you decide that you aren´t interested in whatever they have to sell. A recent example is when I saw something interesting on Facebook. I messaged the person selling the product and got an almost immediate reply. I asked a few questions and it was no problem when it took a little time to get the answer as the seller wasn´t sure them self so had to ask, but I did get a reply the same day. I wanted to think about the item and I was very busy with work and so I didn´t send a message straight away, however I did decide that the product was too expensive and so decided against buying it, I had the courtesy though to message the seller and explain that I thought it seemed a great product but was too expensive and thanked her for her time and explanation. I did

hope for some sort of reply even if it was ´no problem, let me know if you change your mind´ but I was to be disappointed. I heard absolutely

I should point out that this was a trade person. I wasn´t in touch with someone to buy their second hand table or anything like that, although

nothing even though my message had been read. Of course it had, since this person was quick enough to read messages when they thought there would be a sale involved, but I received nothing. Therefore if I do change my mind in the future and decide that maybe I will give it a go after all, this person will not be getting my business!!

common respect is something I look for in whomever I am doing business with. I appreciate that people are busy and have full lives but it seems that those who only reply when it looks like they can earn money from it are not the sort of people to be doing business with. We all need to make money and the best way is with a good reputation. I have built a business

through word of mouth and am proud to be able to say that. Then there are the personal sellers that sell their unwanted things on the internet, and this is usually carried out with respect for the buyer, however I have also seen online where people want to buy something, arrange to pick it up, travel all the way to the destination only to find that it was sold to someone else. Albeit this is very rare in my opinion, it is however unacceptable to do it to just one person. Maybe next time I want to buy from a work seller on a web page I may at first tell them I´m not interested just to see the sort of person that they are. Those who are genuinely interested in helping and selling something they believe in I am sure will send a reply. Even one sentence to thank someone for their initial interest goes a long way in showing respect and a maturity for business. On the other hand if I fail to receive acknowledgement for my message then I will be

sure not to do business with that person again. I was very tempted to send a message to this particular seller and ask if they had received my last message. I know they have read it because Facebook tells you so, but I decided not to bother. It´s not the first time I´ve experienced a lack of response from someone who I know has read a message and my answer is to never use that person. There are many people offering the same types of service and products and the buyer has the ability to pick and choose who they want to give them what they need, without having to put up with lazy or ignorant people. Bear in mind that if you´re a business person then there is a minimum standard that you are expected to reach, and common civility whether Spanish or English, is the most basic etiquette. Next week I´ll be continuing the theme of courtesy but in different settings. Have a great week and stay polite!

Spanish 165 ¡Hola! We are all aware of the Abba song ´Chiquitita´ although we may not be sure of what exactly it means, but if you think about it, it can be worked out fairly easily. This week we are going to learn diminutives, this is something that is very common in Spanish but not something we tend to do too much in English. It´s not very difficult to learn and as such it is quite easy to remember and use. A diminutive is used to say something is a smaller version than the original, it´s also used as a way of saying something cute, especially when talking to little children, and as a term of endearment, as in the way we say doggy or my little man. In theory the endings can be used with almost every noun and they are also at times added to adverbs and adjectives. The way to make a diminutive is by adding letters to the

end of the Spanish word, the letters are either ito/ita or ecito/ecita and the endings obviously depend on whether the word is masculine or feminine. With regards to whether to change the ending to ito or ecito is that generally words ending in a consonant or "e" become "ECITO" or "ECITA". The endings ico/ica are also used in certain parts of Spain

such as the Murcia community. Here are some examples of words with their diminutives see if you know what the words mean, if not I´ll let you know at the end. Gato – gatito, mesa – mesita, casa – casita, chica – chiquita, beso – besito, abuela – abuelita, coche – cochecito, dolor – dolorcito. They mean the following – cat (small cat or kitten), table (small table also bedside table), house (little house), girl (little girl) kiss (little kiss), grandmother (little granny), car (small car), pain (slight ache). The endings can also be used in other circumstances, for example: to provide some meaning, especially with adverbs and adjectives, for example: ahorita(right now), cerquita (right next to), lueguito (quite soon), gordito (chubby)It also gives a friendly tone to a sentence, as in: Un momentito, por favor. (Just a moment, please.) Quisiera un refresquito. (I'd like just a soft drink.) ¡Despacito! (Easy does it!). They can also be used to talk to very young children, such as: pajarito (birdy), camisita (shirty), tontito (silly) vaquita (moo cow).

TRELI ON THE TELLY

WOLVES HOWL WITH FUN

with ALEX TRELINSKI It’s been a good year so far for Channel Four’s comedy department with the excellent Catastrophe, and now we have the gentle and very likeable Raised By Wolves, penned by Caitlin and Caroline Moran. The Wolves refers to Wolverhampton in a retro-feel sit-com set on a Black Country estate, with eight home-schooled kids being brought up by their mum. It’s based on the Moran’s own childhood experiences as children in that part of the Midlands and is a very enjoyable and funny tale of adolescence. The largely unknown cast get it right and no canned laughter is needed, thank heavens. Bits of it reminded me of the very early days of Shameless

before it became a piece of junk, and there’s the bonus of some wonderful backing tracks of great pop music from the seventies and eighties. By the way, Raised by Wolves also shares the distinction with Catastrophe of being turned down by the BBC, which must make ex-BBC One boss, and now Channel Four controller, Jane Root, raise a bit of a smile. Root’s CV is very impressive having run both the One O’Clock and Six O’Clock news bulletins for the BBC, and this explains her big backing and resourcing of the best UK TV newscast, Channel Four News. She also worked on Newsnight, which I’m sure accounts for the signing of Jeremy Paxman, who made his debut last night on the network quizzing David

Cameron and Ed Miliband. Four is actually going to do an Election night programme on May 5th with Paxman pre-

night on BBC One, and with the decisions totally in the hands of the British viewing public, I suspect an element

senting, which is bound to be fun and will certainly pull in the viewers, yours truly included. The Voice moves into the semi-finals stage tomorrow

of heart-throb voting, so my money is on Joe Woolford and Stevie McCrorie to book places in the final. My only slightly negative critique about an excellent show is

that none of the mentors wants to break the “happy” feel, and that there were some acts that didn’t deliver and should have been pulled up about it. The Voice around the world does feature dissent between the mentors, but I suspect the BBC wants to offer as big a contrast as possible between it’s version and the bitchiness of The X Factor. Channel Five have put on a good deck of US shows on a Monday night with the excellent Gotham back after a mid-season break, and the long awaited third season premiere (the Yanks are well into season four) of Person of Interest.

Meanwhile, the American owners of Five, Viacom, are launching a new subscription-free channel called Spike next month, which they currently run in the States. So what, you may ask? Well, over Spike’s first three months they will screen the full 60 episodes of a drama that has been described as one of the best of all time, namely Breaking Bad, which crazily never surfaced in the UK. The fanaticism behind it with the final episode even making international news, suggests that you should watch the story of a dying teacher, Walter White, who becomes a meth lab proprietor to make sure his family have money after he passes away. It also boasts a towering record three-time Emmy award winning performance from Bryan Cranston as White. Must view, I suggest, based on UK friends of mine being unable to drag themselves away from watching a full box-set at a time!

ARE YOU TAKING TOO MANY UNNECESSARY MEDICATIONS? One of the things we do when people come to us for a full body diagnostic scan is to go through their list of medications, and I am always amazed at how people continue to take medications for many years when there is absolutely no need to continue to do so. Expats living abroad are the most likely group of people affected. People relocating from England to Spain will usually come with a list of their prescription drugs which is normally reviewed when registering with a doctor´s surgery. Unfortunately, due to language barrier and other cultural differences, these drugs may not be properly looked at, and this may result in even more medications being prescribed. And as people are only allowed to spend an average of 8 minutes with their doctor, there may not be enough time to ask ques-

tions and so many people continue to take medications that may be causing serious damage to their health. What is important to understand is that the body puts up a fight against any chemical compound that it considers foreign, and that includes nearly all prescription medications. For this reason, wise doctors know to prescribe only medications that are absolutely necessary, and for the shortest amount of time. Always ask your doctor what the medications that you are taking are meant for, and if they don´t seem to be working for you, ask some more questions. A problem of the older generation is that they have been brain washed to believe all that the doctor says, without question. If you doctor is reluctant to answer your questions, it´s either he or she doesn´t understand what they are doing, or they

do not care about your health. At MedB clinic, we carefully go through your medications before a diagnostic scan, and provide you with information for your healthcare provider to stop or change some of the medications. Even more importantly, our diagnostic technology is able to find out how your body is interacting with your prescription drugs, as well as the best time of the day to take them, to avoid side effects. SEMI-PERMANENT MAKEUP FROM HOLLYWOOD

Semi-Permanent makeup is a cosmetic technique which employs tattoos (Semi-Permanent pigmentation of the dermis) as a means of producing designs that resemble makeup, such as eyeliner and other permanent enhancing colours to the skin of the: Face Lips Eyelids It is also used to produce artificial eyebrows, particularly in people who have lost them as a consequence of old age, disease, such as alopecia, chemotherapy, or a genetic disturbance, And to disguise Scars and white spots in the skin such as in vitiligo. It is also used to restore or enhance the breast’s areola, such as after breast surgery. Most commonly called “Semi-Permanent cosmetics” other names include: Derma pigmentation Micro pigmentation Cosmetic tattooing Semi-Permanent makeup is a welcome enhancement for most recipients. There are cases, however of undesired results. The 4 most common complaints are “too dark,” “wrong

colour,” “uneven” and “too big,” A skilled, experienced, Semi-Permanent makeup professional is able to adjust the colour and evenness of permanent makeup results in most cases. A design that is too large presents a serious challenge, however. Costly pigment lightening techniques and/or removal may be the only solutions. However, before embarking on the aforementioned removal/correction procedures, it should also be noted that one still has the option of applying conventional makeup to correct any imperfections or to further enhance the overall effect. Is it for me? It’s suitable for everyone including men, women, the young and the not so young. Many people find that it saves them precious time every morning, gives the face a ‘younger’ and healthier looking appearance and also has the obvious benefit of staying put all day and all night. How does it work? Let’s face it, we all get bored with applying makeup. Not only does it take up valuable time in the morn-

ing, but it also has the tendency of smudging, running and smearing. Permanent or semi – permanent makeup otherwise known as micro pigmentation is a process whereby hypo-allergenic pigments (this means there are no fragrances or other ingredients added) are inserted into the dermal layer (lower layer) of the skin, usually using a needle. This makes it stay put all day, every day without smudging or wearing off. So, weather you’re taking a dip in the pool or splashing about at the beach, there’s no need to worry about it exposing your natural look. Semi permanent makeup can be applied to the brows, lips and eyes to enhance natural features and take years off your appearance. It will help to give lift to the brows and give the illusion of fuller lips, without resorting to going under the knife so it’s a great non-surgical alternative to anti ageing treatments. What’s more it can also be used to disguise scars and white spots in the skin. For more information, contact Hollywood using the details to the left.

Q

My wife has had Meniere’s disease for approx. 30 years she is now 72 years of age and during the last 2years she is getting attacks more often and during the last 6months she is having virtually daily attacks and has to spend a lot of time in bed and getting very depressed. We went to our doctor and she did not seem to know what we were talking about (we did take an interpreter). The tablet she is taking is SERC 16mg X2 three times a day. Is there any way you can help her or know where she can get help?

A

I am so sorry to hear of your wife’s situation. Meniere’s disease is such a troublesome illness. Meniere’s is a disorder of the hearing system characterized by vertigo (spinning sensation), tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ear) and deafness. There is no single test for Meniere’s and so it is diagnosed by clinically examination, usually when other illnesses with similar presenting symptoms have been ruled out. Researchers don’t agree on the exact cause of Meniere’s diseases; however what is clear is that it arises due to a malfunction in the labyrinth system of the inner ear. The labyrinth is made of a series of fluid filled channels that send signals of sound and balance to the brain and Meniere’s occurs when there is an abnormality in the amount and composition of this fluid. Meniere’s can also cause other problems such as nausea, vomiting, irregular heart-beats and depression. There is no drug treatment for Meniere’s, instead doctors treat symptoms as they showup. SERC – the medication prescribed for your wife - is only used to treat vertigo, which is just one out of many symptoms of meniere’s. Even though most researchers are unsure of the cause of Meniere’s disease, current research and even anecdotal evidence clearly points towards heavy metals, especially mercury as one of the causes of Meniere’s disease. In 2010 Conductor Benjamin Zander of the Boston Philharmonic gave evidence before the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US of how removing his mercury amalgam fillings cured his Meniere’s disease.

Evidence notwithstanding, what we know for sure is that mercury is toxic to the delicate organs of our ears. Even without waiting for conclusive research it makes sense for anyone suffering from Meniere’s disease, a very debilitating disease, to take the steps to remove any mercury fillings they may have. However even the process of removing mercury amalgam exposures the body to a heavy load of mercury which can cause a lot of ill health. And so it’s advisable to detox your body during the same time period you are removing your fillings.

It may also be a good idea to see the effect of a mercury detox first, before she removes her amalgam fillings, if she has any present. There are other sources of mercury contamination besides amalgam like: environmental toxins, pesticides, insecticides, cosmetics, vaccines, drugs etc. The only substance taken by mouth that has been scientifically proven to eliminate toxins from the body is Pectasol, a natural compound formulated from the inner pulp of citrus fruits. Pectasol binds to heavy metals deep inside cells, and is flushed out of the body through the urine.

Horoscopes Aries March 21 - April 19 The extra intuition that you gained from last week’s eclipse is due to stand you in good stead this week. Because you have a sixth sense for coming trends and for others’ motives, you are now ideally placed to realise a personal dream. You can also turn an unexpected confrontation to your own advantage later in the week.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 This week’s link between your ruler, Venus, in your sign and the psychic planet, Neptune, could make you see a friend or colleague in a new light. You may also sense that someone’s real intentions may not be what they first seem. Do not look for problems where there are none; it could just be that they have not found the way to show their hand.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 With the Sun travelling through your chart’s most sociable zone in weeks to come, catching up with friends and breaking new emotional ground should come high on your agenda. You could find that someone needs reassurance from you. Set the scene and draw them out midweek. How the situation develops may be up to you.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 Trying to make progress with a career project may have seemed a challenge lately. But with the energising Sun giving you more flair and motivation in the month ahead, you can turn the situation round and push through changes that you had postponed. A close friendship could also take a more romantic turn midweek. Do not hedge your bets.

Friday 27th March 2015

By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 With your ruler, the Sun, in your chart’s zone of hopes and dreams from this weekend, better times now lie ahead, so do not let your doubts about a certain situation make you overcautious. All you need to do is take a confident, upbeat approach and let events unfold. Getting what you want could be much easier than you feared.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 The terms of an agreement with a loved one or important colleague could come up for review this week. Do not try to sidestep problems or let others feel they call the tune. You have every right to ask for something that you know is yours, so do not settle for short-term solutions now. An unexpected twist of fate could boost your confidence midweek

Libra September 23 - October 22 Your close relationships take centre stage throughout the month ahead, so concentrate on what needs changing in a new alliance. With introverted Saturn travelling backwards through your chart’s communication zone, you could miss a chance to bring about a breakthrough by being too cautious or reserved. Do not hesitate to show your hand.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21 The Sun in fiery, pioneering Aries is due to boost your confidence and help you overcome a recent cashflow problem that has held you back. What you have to offer may be more special than you imagine, so ask for what you need from those concerned. It seems a certain goal will soon be within reach. Deal with all unfinished business now.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Wednesday’s powerful link between restrictive Saturn in your sign and the Sun in energetic, forceful Aries is due to help you break a recent deadlock and move forward. If you take advantage of the stars, you could also win support from someone who could revolutionise your prospects of success, so do not sell yourself short.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19 Your personal dreams come first this week, so do not let domestic issues cramp your style. If you banish doubts and take a confident approach, you could get the feedback and respect you need to bring about important changes. Psychic Neptune and romantic Venus also put you in a strong position now.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 Problems or misunderstandings in a close relationship or new friendship can be overcome this week if you are prepared to make the opening move. Do not let your natural reserve colour the decisions you make now. Major changes are on the horizon, so take full advantage of the planetary pattern and let go of a situation that you have outgrown.

Pisces February 19 - March 20 This week’s link between your ruler, Neptune, and romantic Venus in your chart’s communication zone suggests that a close friendship could develop into something deeper. Some news midweek could make you see how strong your hand is. Do not let financial problems limit your horizons or try to plan too far ahead.

Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: John was replacing his Vista machine with a new ADVICE: Celia was having problems with Internet one and wanted to know about backups. Explorer crashing Hi, I am planning to sell my present lap top. Before I do sell it I want to be sure I can do so without leaving any of my data on the HD. My current system is windows Vista and I do have an external backup. Would my Vista backup be able to restore onto a Windows 7 system? Can I format my present HD and then restore the Vista OS. Best regards, John T.

Q A

Hi John, as you probably already suspect simply formatting and / or reinstalling the operating system will not prevent the recovery of your data, it simply hides it and therefore makes it more difficult to get hold of, but not impossible. The only way to be certain that all of your data has been removed from the hard drive is to use specialist “scrubbing” software that will overwrite the hard drive with “rubbish” until it cannot be recovered, at that stage you can use your operating system CD’s to install and set up Vista ready for the new owner. With regards to whether you can restore your Vista backup onto a Windows 7 machine it will very much depend on the type of software that you are using to back the Vista machine up and how you have it configured, feel free to drop me an email with this information and I will try to help you.

ADVICE: Margaret wanted to know whether she had to change from Hotmail to Outlook and was also receiving a certificate error on a website.

Q

Hi Richard. Have a couple of queries that I hope you can help me with please. Firstly do I need to change my Hotmail to Outlook? Secondly I had a notice saying Security Alert Revocation information for security certificate for this site is not available Then there were 3 boxes YES NO and View Certificate, it did not make any sense to me so I went onto website javadl-esd-secure.oracle.com, but could not understand if I needed to do anything else as I am not a computer whiz kid. It has only ever come up once so what do I do now, HELP. Margaret Hi Margaret, yes you do have to change from Hotmail to Outlook, however don’t worry this is something that will be done automatically for you by Microsoft over time everyone with a Hotmail account will be moved to an Outlook account – your email address will remain unchanged of course. With regards to your other question about the Security Alert Revocation information, this is something that is very complex to explain but in simple terms it means that the security certificate is either invalid or revoked, either way you should not fully trust the website in this situation. Of course there are always exceptions but as a general rule this is the case.

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternatively why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

The Internet Explorer notice is still intermittently appearing & it reads as follows 1st Notice - Internet Explorer has stopped working, Windows is checking for a solution to the problem. 2nd Notice - a problem caused the programme to stop working correctly. Windows will close the programme & notify you if a solution is available. Hope this gives you a clue? Thanks Celia

Q

Hi Celia, Bob in the Courier last week was experiencing similar problems last week, if you have tried to disable the Add-Ons in Internet Explorer and have still not fixed the problem then the next thing to try would be to reset Internet Explorer - this usually fixes most problems, you can do this by... 1. Launching Internet Explorer 2. Click Tools, Internet Options 3. Click the Advanced tab 4. Click Reset and then click Reset again on the new window that is displayed ...I hope this helps resolve your problems

Craig is receiving the error 0x80041006 when trying to play Windows 7 games online. Hello Richard, possible that I have done something wrong, I don't know. Problem is when trying to access internet HEARTS or BACKGAMMON constantly get Error Code 0x80041006. Have tried to research it on the internet but it's all double Dutch to me. Any assistance would be gratefully accepted. Craig

Q

Hi Craig, this seems to be quite a big problem within the online gaming community, there are lots of people complaining to Microsoft about it and there doesn’t currently seem to be a solution that works for everyone. During my research I have found just one solution that seems to work for those that are using Yahoo “Add-Ons”, if this also matches what you have then try disabling them and seeing if it resolves your problem.

FORD INTRODUCES AUTOMATIC SPEED LIMITER New Ford S-Max to feature a speed limiter that automatically adjusts according to signs

Ford will introduce a speed limiting device which can read road signs and automatically adjust a driver’s speed to match the speed limit. The system, which makes its debut on the new S-Max, marries two pre-existing technologies already available on Ford cars: a driver-selected speed limiter, and a speed limit sign recognition camera. Drivers will be able to activate and de-activate the Intelligent Speed Limiter, as the technology will be known, between speeds of 20 and 120mph, and to select a maximum speed limit using controls mounted on the steering wheel. The system will then monitor speed limit signs, and reduce the speed of the car as the driver enters a lower speed limit zone, or increase it up to the maximum the driver has set as the speed limit rises. It will do this not by using the brakes, but by backing off

the throttle electronically and reducing the flow of fuel to the engine, regardless of the pedal’s position, to ensure a smooth transition. The driver will still be able to slow the car m a n u a l l y, either by lifting off the accelerator pedal or braking. If the car is unable to prevent the speed limit from being exceeded – for example, while freewheeling downhill – then an alarm will be sounded. Ford says the new system could help to reduce road acci-

dents caused by speeding and prevent drivers from incurring speeding penalties. The new S-Max is available to order now, with prices starting from 27.545€.

www.n332.es

In the Traffic Police we sometimes use unmarked cars for patrolling roads, we want to show you how differentiate a police unmarked car: 1. In the front we use flashing red and blue lights. (A red light means; STOP).

If you have committed a traffic offence you can be fined for them and if you do not have NIE number (only passport), you will have to pay the fine on the spot. Before paying the fine, you will receive it, and you can read in Spanish the traffic offence committed and the price you have to pay.

them the plate number of the car to check if it is a real police car. In the Traffic Police we have 2 different formats for the fines: 1- The new format, which is made on a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant - computer). 2- The old format, which

2. At the rear we use the same lights, and a letter which shows the words "GUARDIA CIVIL, ALTO", "G.CIVIL TRAFICO, STOP". The message can be modified depending on who is using the vehicle. 3.The Traffic Police we always use our uniforms when we are patrolling roads.

At the bottom of the fine, you will find the Id of the policeman who wrote the fine. So if you are stopped by a Traffic police unmarked car, you can see how there have to be 2 uniformed police officers inside the car. If you have any doubts if they are real policemen, call 062 (Guardia Civil), and tell

When the PDA does not work, or there are connection problems, we use the old fomart, but remember that there are NO other official formats, so be aware of the fake police who want to get money from you. GLUTEN-FREE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES RECIPE Makes 12 brownies

200g whole almonds 225g unsalted butter 375g chocolate (70% cocoa) 3 eggs 375g golden caster sugar 75g rice flour 他 tsp fine sea salt 75g dried blueberries 1 Heat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4. Butter and line a 20 x 30cm baking dish with parchment. Toast the almonds in the oven for about 7-8 minutes, or until golden. 2 Put the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Place

it over a saucepan of simmering water to melt the butter and chocolate, stirring occasionally. Do not let the water boil or it can burn the chocolate. If it does boil, turn off the heat and the water will most likely be hot enough to melt the butter

and chocolate. Stir occasionally. If there are still lumps in 10 minutes, turn the heat back on briefly to finish the melting. Remove the bowl from the bain marie and allow it to cool for a few minutes. 3 In another bowl whisk together the eggs, sugar, rice flour and salt just to combine and break up the eggs. Do not whisk them into a fluffy mass. Fold the melted chocolate into this, along with the almonds and dried blueberries. 4 Pour into your prepared baking tray and smooth the top. Bake for 25 minutes only. Remove from the oven (it will seem under-baked in the centre but set around the sides). Rest for 2 hours at room temperature or one hour in the fridge before cutting.

SOME CEREAL BARS FOR CHILDREN CONTAIN OVER 40% SUGAR

Consumer watchdog Which? has warned that some cereal bars aimed at children contain “staggering” levels of sugar.

Speaking on World Consumer Rights Day, the watchdog called for clearer traffic light nutrition labelling on the front of all cereal bar packs after finding that some contain more than 40 per cent sugar. The company took a snapshot survey of 15 cereal bars, including those marketed directly at children, and found that the levels of sugar left some “more suited to the confectionary aisle.” The Kellogg’s Coco Pops snack bar had the highest level of sugar with 42 per cent whilst three of the companies other bars, Rice Krispies, Special K Red Berry and Nutri-Grain Fruity Breakfast were also in the

top five worst or sugar.

Others marketed at children, the Frosties' Bar and Harvest Chewee (Milk Choc Chip) were also high in sugar and fat. Eat Natural’s Fruit and Nut bar was the second worst for sugar, with 40 per cent sugar despite the brand’s website describing their bars as “packed with good, wholesome stuff… and nothing dodgy.” Of the bars surveyed Quaker Oat So Simple Golden Syrup Morning Bars had the lowest amount of sugar of the products surveyed oat just over 15 per cent. Which? Executive Director Richard Lloyd said that: “It’s worrying that cereal bars, especially those aimed at children or claiming to be healthy, contain so much sugar but most don’t make this clear on the front of their packs. “We now want the government to tackle this issue head on by making sure all manufacturers use traffic light nutrition labelling.” Traffic light nutritional information is a basic method of telling the fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt in foods. A red sign means high, amber medium and green low. Among surveyed only one, Mars’ Tracker Bar, displayed the scheme, showing a red symbol.

VOICE OF GOLF TO QUIT?

One of golf's best-loved commentators may become the first casualty of the Open's switch from BBC to Sky. Stalwart Peter Alliss, who been the BBC's voice of golf since the 1960's, recently admitted the thought of retirement had crossed his mind following the news Sky Sports would take over the rights to broadcast the Open from 2017. Alliss said he may choose to go out at St Andrews this year. He says there are another couple of years to go, and

hasn’t decided yet but might finish this year at St Andrews. A lot of the big boys have finished there not that he was ever in the same form as Nicklaus, Watson and De Vicenzo and all that lot - but they all ended their days there so he might do the same, depending how the mood takes him. A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Alliss first got his break with the BBC in 1961 but complimented Sky for the "fantastic" service it offers. He added: "I do feel sorry for a lot of people that don't

h a v e Sky. A lot of people a r e defending the R&A for giving the rights to Sky but there are still an awful lot of people in this country who don't h a v e Sky." When he started the Beeb televised 18 live events, including going to America and screening the US Open as well as the Masters. When you look at the people that say they started playing because of watching it on television, such as Greg Norman and Nick Faldo, they all say they started seeing predominantly the Masters, because of the colour of flowers on the course and the crowds and the glory and sadness, it was all there. Alliss is one of the UK's most successful golfers and was an eight-time member of the Great Britain Ryder Cup team. His father, Percy,

also played multiple times on the Ryder Cup team and the pair is one of only two father-son duos to play in the same competition. Despite a successful playing career, Alliss never won a Major, perhaps held back by his main weakness, which was putting. WORLD RANKING MOVERS: PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2015 1 - Danny Willett (50) The Yorkshireman has just sneaked into the top 50 at the turn of the year and will relish playing with the big boys in 2015. Has been superb off the tee in recent weeks and can be a threat to anyone when the putter gets hot. Seems happy with his equipment, happy with life, so 2015 could be a huge year. 2 - Tommy Fleetwood (51) Fleetwood’s enormous potential is finally being reflected in the World Rankings. Never looks out of place when challenging at the top of a leaderboard and will be desperate to join the world’s elite by sneaking up a few more places. A proven winner feels he should have a few more under his belt. 3 - Luke Donald (33) Would have been devastated to miss out on a Ryder Cup place but signs are

TITTER ON THE TEE

A Greek and a Scotsman were sitting in a Starbucks cafe discussing who had the superior culture. Over triple lattes the Greek guy says, "Well we Greeks built the Parthenon" and arched his eyebrows. The Scotsman replies, "Well ... it was the Scots that discovered the Summer and Winter Solstices." The Greek retorts, "We Greeks gave birth to advanced mathematics." The Scotsman, nodding in agreement says, "Scots were the ones who built the first timepieces and calendars."

there that Luke could be getting back to his best. His performance at the Nedbank Challenge in December will have reminded him what it was like to compete at the top of the leaderboard again. He’s such a popular player on both sides of the Atlantic so no one would begrudge him having a good year. 4 - Joost Luiten (29) Widely tipped as a major champion in the making, the Dutchman has got the game to be a force in 2015. With four European Tour wins to his name already, he knows how to get over the line. Yet to really make his mark in a major so could easily be under-estimated by those across the Atlantic. THOSE WHO COULD MOVE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION 1 - Jamie Donaldson (24) What a year 2014 was for Jamie Donaldson but I feel he may struggle to match it this year. I hope he proves me wrong because the Ryder Cup highlighted not only what a great character he is but also what a fantastic player. That wedge on 15 at Gleneagles will live long in the memory but I suspect it won’t be matched by any achievements in 2015. 2 - Phil Mickelson (14) It pains me to say it but I think we’ve seen the best of Phil now. He definitely lost a few fans with the way he attacked Tom Watson in that infamous Ryder Cup press conference. I’m just not sure he can put four good rounds together. With the new generation coming through he may be forced to stand aside. 3 - Sergio Garcia (5) I worry that deep-down Sergio may feel his best opportunities to win a major are in the past. When his opportunity arose last year, a certain Rory McIlroy slammed the door in his face. If he truly believes he

can beat McIlroy if they go head-to-head again, then he may prove me wrong but I’d be surprised to see Garcia ranked higher than fifth come the end of 2015. HOW DOES THE OFFICIAL WORLD GOLF RANKING WORK? Points are awarded for each event calculated on finishing position only and the amount of points available depends on the quality of the field. The points are added up and then divided by the number of events that a player has played over the last years. So it's an average rather than a point’s total. How are events weighted? The four Majors have 100 points for first; The Players 80; The BMW PGA 64; and the Opens of South Africa, Japan and Australia 32. Every PGA Tour or European Tour event has a minimum of 24 whatever the strength of the field. Can you move up without playing? It's very similar to the handicap system. Let's say a player is off 5.0, if he doesn't play well he goes up to 5.1 whereas if he doesn't play he stays at 5.0. So the guy who doesn't play could move ahead of someone who did. Players are losing points as well as gaining them. Is it better to finish high up against weak fields or lower against stronger ones? If you play your very best and finish fifth in a weaker event and, based on a similar level of play, tenth in a stronger event, the system will award you the same points. Players may think they can manage their schedules to win more ranking points but it's virtually impossible. If players just pick the courses where they think they are going to do well that will work in their favour.

KNOW YOUR RULES QUESTION A player’s ball lies in a Bunker (at point A) that runs 20 yards along the left side of a fairway. He plays his shot and the ball only advances 10 yards towards the hole but stays in the bunker (at point B). May he rake the bunker at Point A before player his next shot at Point B?

ANSWER Yes, the player may smooth the bunker at point A as long as

And so on until the Greek comes up with what he thinks will end the discussion. With a flourish of finality he says, "The Greeks were the ones who invented sex!" The Scotsman replies, "Aye, that is true, but it was we Scots who introduced it to the women!"

it for the sole purpose of caring for the course and in doing so would not improve the lie of the ball, line of play, or his area of intended stance or swing for his next stroke at Point B.

BARCA BITE BACK BARCELONA 2

Barcelona took the El Clasico honours at the Nou Camp last Sunday night to move four points clear of their rivals at the top of La Liga, ahead of this weekend’s international break. The Catalans took a 20th-minute lead thanks to Jeremy Mathieu’s header, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to equalise just past the half-hour mark with his 42nd goal of the season in all competitions. However, Luis Enrique’s side claimed what could turn out to be a vital victory thanks to Luis Suarez’s 57th-minute strike, the Uruguayan’s first-ever El Clasico goal. Barcelona manager Luis Enrique praised the efforts of Luis Suarez, who struggled for his first three months following his debut in last October’s El Clasico, but is now finding his place in the team and justifying his massive club-record transfer fee. “Luis Suárez played very well. Top football. This is why we paid what we paid for him. We are very happy to see how decisive he is. He has done so many good things for the team

since he came here.” Real’s coach Carlo Ancelotti said his side were punished for reverting to long balls. "We played well for the first hour, but the last half hour was terrible," said Ancelotti of his side, who drew level through Cristiano Ronaldo. "It is a blow, but we won't give up. We lacked a cool head to try to equalise rather than playing long balls." He continued: "We played a lot better until the second goal. After that it was very difficult. European champions Real, who were four points clear on February 27th, have 10 games left to overhaul Barca's lead. To do so, they will have to rediscover their form, having dropped eight points in the last four league games. "It's more difficult, but we're not going to prioritise the Champions League," said Ancelotti. "The priority is La Liga and the Champions League.”

ONE WAY TRAFFIC ELCHE 0

Elche were second best at home last Friday night to a Valencia side in great form, who cemented their third place in the table, with Champions League football as the big prize. The boost for the Ilicitanos came over the weekend as results all pretty much went their way at the foot of the table, as they kept a two point distance between them and the relegation zone. Otamendi had a brace of chances for Valencia in the opening minutes, seeing a header saved from a Pablo Piatti set-piece before firing wide from the subsequent corner. Piatti, who caused problems all night, played a major role in the opening goal, which came on the stroke of half-time. His cross teed up Sofiane Feghouli, whose

shot was parried into the path of Gomes, who made no mistake from close range. Gomes turned provider for the second goal, finding room down the right before firing in a powerful cross for the predatory Alcacer to acrobatically finish from six yards out. Feghouli could have further extended the lead, but missed a gilt-edged chance. However, he made amends minutes later when he again found space on the right wing and put in a teasing cross which a sliding Roco could only knock past his own keeper. Elche had a few chances as the game fizzled out, but the victory was rounded off in stoppage time as Otamendi again popped up from a Piatti corner to head home as Valencia estab-

lished a four-point advantage over Atletico. Elche manager Fran Escriba said "Valencia played very well throughout. They beat us with their intensity and against a superior team like that, you have to show more intensity and we just couldn't do that." A brighter note for Elche was the return to action of midfielder Pedro Mosquera who has missed the last three months due to a knee injury. He came on as a substitute for the last 13 minutes of the match, and said he was pleased to be back, though the result had tarnished his return. The international break means that the Ilicitanos don't return to action until Monday April 6th when they are away to Espanyol.

HAIL CESAR!

What a difference a week and a new coach makes, as Torrevieja conjured up some outstanding football, sweeping aside an Acero outfit whose recent form had been good. For a side who found scoring goals as difficult as Jeremy Clarkson staying out of mischief, it was an astonishing change witnessed by Torry’s fans at the Vicente Garcia stadium last Sunday. The home side set about Acero straight away, and whilst under the sacked Galliana, Torrevieja had always defended deep and had minimal attacking instincts, with little desire or penetration. The difference under new manager, Pedreño was noticeable straight away as he asked the team to press, and every time the ball was with the Acero back four, they were smothered by white shirts, forcing countless errors. When Torry won the ball back they were quick to move it forwards, with none of the negative sideways passing that has plagued the side in recent weeks. Torry’s opener came from the most direct of balls from

the back, as Cesar ran from the half way line, knocked it between the two centre backs who stopped, assuming that Brani would be deemed to be offside. Cesar ran on himself, the full half- length and calmly slotted home. For a player who looked all at sea in Castellon nine days earlier, he was fully fired up, looking like a new signing. Brani was causing problems every time he got the ball and got chopped down by their left back. The resulting free kick, crossed in by Adrian, seemed to evade everyone, hit the post and ended up as Torry’s second in the net - credited as a Victor own goal after 32 minutes. Three minutes before half time, Jorge(pictured tackling a somewhat pained Acero player) found Cesar who played a delightful one-touch lay-off to Carrasco. He played in Cristian who had swapped to the right hand flank and his cross was turned in at the far post by the ever-dangerous Brani who made no mistake to make it three-nil at the break.

CD TORREVIEJA 6 CD ACERO 1

In the second half, Cristian won a free kick wide on the Torrevieja right. Adrian (pictured on the ball) crossed and Jorge headed home at the far post, as it was becoming that simple in a Torry romp. Goal number five was electric, as Vicente, who was excellent in defence and in support of the attack, pinched the ball from his man in another moment of excellent pressing, went on the overlap and got it back from Carrasco. A clever pass to Brani set him free, and the young Croatian was able to make the right call in dinking it over to the back post where Adrian arrived to tap home. Acero pulled one back in injury time from a corner before Cesar swept home number six to earn a brace with the result giving Torry a lifeline in their quest for a top four spot. Only five points separate ten clubs, all vying for that place, as they go to relegation-threatened Requena this Sunday before taking on Cullera at home on Wednesday April 1st with an 8pm kick off.

MONTE FLATTERED CD MONTESINOS 3

Promotion hopes may have been dashed for Montesinos, but at least they got a win against a side that would have felt disappointed not to have got more for their efforts. Monte started well, and showed more urgency in the first quarter of an hour than during the whole of their previous match. They broke the deadlock with a good cross from Dimitry which was fumbled by the keeper, and M&A pounced to make it one-nil. The visitors pressed, and went close on two occasions in five minutes, but Monte stood firm and doubled their advantage. A long pass from Fernando saw the Callosa defender misjudge the bounce, and Vaz rounded the keeper to make it two-nil. The visitors continued with good passing football but the home side still had chances with Orouker and Vaz going close, with Vaz showing the frustrating flair to try to do the complicated whilst keeping it simple would have allowed one of his colleagues to stretch the lead further.

CALLOSA DEPORTIVA 1

Callosa came out the second half and stuck with their game plan of passing on the ground and stretching the home side with diamond or envelope passing techniques, which left Monte chasing shadows at times. Yet again, Monte got lucky when a great passing move saw a goal mouth scramble with Lopez making a great stop. Then Vaz missed his third ‘one on one’ with the Callosa keeper, much to the annoyance of the Monte fans, but just five minutes later, substitute Saez showed Vaz how it should be done when a cheeky pass from Dimitry saw him cleverly lob the keeper to make it threenil. Callosa got a thoroughly deserved late consolation from a free kick from just outside the box, but it was Monte who claimed all the points. This weekend seems them away to Benejuzar, where previous encounters have been full of colour, both on and off the field.

Whichever way you watch it, wack, Liverpool FC feature fearlessly in the news this week. We only need a bored Balotelli break out from his Anfield anchors, like he does, and we’re away. An old-fashioned expression used to say ‘Manners maketh man’. Well…do they still today? Can you remember when civility and self-responsibility were still prized virtues in our country?

In the wake of a great career for Liverpool and England, amid the unmitigated disaster of a defeat from his club’s most hated nastyneighbours Man U in their own back yard, Steven Gerrard stood tall, albeit in disgrace. Y’ know that saying ‘it only takes a minute’ – well, it takes some people even less… only on the field as second half sub for 38 seconds before getting sent off at his spiritual home of Anfield, Liverpool’s legendary captain and icon immediately came out after the game and apologised for stamping on United’s Ander Herrera. No excuses, straight apology to everyone. It takes a man to do that – these days. It was a feisty, and highly-entertaining encounter for the neutrals, but one which will have hurt deeply in the Red corner of Merseyside. The action caught the mood perfectly. Stamping is currently the new ‘mustn’t do’ uncool conflict clash: it’s the ASBO in 2015’s UK foot-

CLUB OR COUNTRY?

ball. Unfortunately they can’t use the slogan ‘Stamp It Out’, that’s probably good news in case any thick thugs thought it was being promoted… You don’t have to look far to see how the Liverpool legend’s latest legacy appears ‘out of step’ ha-ha, even within his own club. Interestingly, and somewhat alternatively, Gerrard’s team mate Martin Skrtel has now been banned for three

games by the FA for his lastminute stamp on United goalkeeper David de Gea in the same match (at least big Mart looks the part, you’d

definitely cross the street to avoid him on a dark night). But Gerrard’s example of how to handle it earns deep respect from nosey neutrals like me. Now post-ban, will Skrtel apologise? Unlikely, they don’t do that, at Anfield, Stampford Bridge or anywhere, more’s the pity. Back to Gerrard: this born and bred Scouser has also never let England down, until recently the captain of his country with 114 caps, the

third highest of all time behind Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (114). If Gerrard is the living example of how to combine club and

country representation at the highest level with dignity, given the attritional aspect of football today, then it is not being reciprocated by other team mates, and not just Skrtel. There was no fainting when we heard that despite playing the whole Man U match on Sunday, and scoring, striker Daniel Sturridge has been declared ‘unfit to play’ for his country this week. Quelle surprise, non! If you don’t know the saga,

Danny Boy came back injured from the early seasonal England break, and Brendan Rodgers and his staff were furious in claiming their man was not looked after in a proper m a n n e r while on national duty. Sturridge then missed playing in all the Euro qualifiers so far and, far more importantly for his club, did not play for the first third of the Premier League season as a result and there were fears for his career. In the wake of Luis Suarez leaving in the close sea-

son, Liverpool missed Sturridge’s electric pace and goals badly and Red results suffered early on. Rodgers and Roy Hodgson are not speaking to each other as a result of Sturridge’s injury, footbally-ironic as Hodgson was the Liverpool manager for a short while recently and knows the Anfield set-up well. The Sturridge situation is humiliating for the national team manager who looks to have been out-manoeuvred here by Rodgers. But what can Hodgson do? Do we know how the lad feels about it himself? As Liverpool pay Sturridge’s wages, can or actually do the club dictate if their players are available for national duty? Now, that’s a good question. Catch 22: the country badly needs the co-operation of typically-British clubs like Liverpool. Quite simply their players, when fully fit, on their day can provide half the national team: Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Ricky Lambert to name but a few. It will be very interesting what will happen next time round if Sturridge is selected again for England. Hey, it’s a good job Spurs have some good English talent: Harry’s

game… In case you think this is an English problem, no way Jose! The club v country controversy continues outside the UK as the Diego’s by. The BBC website says ‘Chelsea's Costa will miss Spain's Euro 2016 qualifier against Ukraine and a friendly with the Netherlands after picking up a hamstring injury sustained during Chelsea's three-two win at Hull on Sunday’. Costa is actually Brazilian but controversially changed nationalities to Spanish when he moved to Spain. He was booed in Brazil by the home crowds last year and now not playing for Spain again when selected will raise Spanish eyebrows and heckles. Fancy a flutter? Back in the Prem, just only a week on Saturday away with vital games being played, it’s highly likely that Daniel Sturridge will play for Liverpool against Arsenal and Diego Costa for Chelsea against Stoke, both on April 4th - despite both being ‘unavailable though injury’ to play for their countries. If they both do start the matches, as I confidently expect them both to, I rest my case, m’ lord…

HOME:WHERE YOUR HEART IS By John McGregor Statement:- All five Home Nations could qualify for Euro 2016 in France, see below. It’s a welcome break this weekend from the usual Maths homework in the Prem, with all those endless permutations about whowill-qualify-forEurope, and who’s going down to the Championship. Let’s move on to Geography. Key quiz question of the week. Where’s Lithuania? More importantly perhaps, does anybody care after last year’s England’s pathetic World Cup Campaign? Will it take a long time before most redblooded Englishmen take a patriotically-

healthy interest in our national side again? Or have the selfinflicted wounds of embarrassment already quickly healed over – again – and now we feel the need returning to smash at least five goals past another small country, one that we’re not at all sure we could find on a World Map (tip: use Google). But then of course go further in true arrogant AngloSaxon lording-it style where we once again try to show the world that England are back as serious contenders in world football. Yea, right… get real, John…. and stop sniggering at the back, you Celts. I’ll come to you lot in a minute – and stop that fighting amongst yourselves.

For the record, lads, Lithuania is in Northern Europe, one of the three Baltic states alongside Latvia and Estonia. The country is situated along the south-eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, to the east of Sweden and Denmark. The population is similar to Wales, three million-ish. England currently lead their Euro 2016 qualifying Group E by six points with a 100% record from their first four games. We play Lithuania at Wembley tonight, Friday, live on ITV before moving on to face Italy in a friendly in Turin on Tuesday, March 31st. For the latest England team news see below* Group D is a biggie for our Home Nations with both Scotland and Republic of Ireland pitched in against Germany, Poland – and

G i b r a l t a r. Over da’ water evergreen Shay Given is hoping to reclaim the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper's jersey for Sunday's vital qualifier a g a i n s t Poland in Dublin. Martin O'Neill's Republic side opened their campaign with victories in Georgia and at home to Gibraltar (!) followed by a one-one draw in Germany, albeit a dramatic defeat by Scotland at Hampden Park. Poland have a three-point lead over Germany, Scotland and Ireland at the top of the table having beaten the world champions two-nil in Warsaw in October before being held to a two-two draw by the Scots. Scotland - anyone remember Sir Alex Ferguson? The former Scotland and Manchester United manager thinks the national team have ‘their best chance in

years’ to reach a m a j o r finals’. G o r d o n Strachan's side are third in Group D going into n e x t Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar ‘The game in Ireland will be important, as will the game against Poland at home, but they have given themselves a chance.’ Note the ‘their’, ‘themselves’ and ‘they’, not ‘we’; Fergie and Strachan fell out a while back after the glory days at Aberdeen and United together. The Land of our Fathers’, boyo? Wales visit Israel, my boy, following a good goalless draw away to World Cup quarter finalists Belgium. Liverpool’s Joe Allen says Wales' good start to their Euro 2016 campaign gives them a great chance to qualify

This week’s England squad has been ‘Spurred on’, as Liverpool’s Adam Lallana was injured against Man United (hmm, see over) and Tottenham’s midfielder Ryan Mason has been called up in his place to play against Lithuania and Italy. The 23 year old Mason is now a Spurs regular and he joins team-mate Harry Kane in the England squad for the first time, along with full back Kyle Walker, midfielder Andros Townsend, although Danny Rose has had to pull out. Between the sticks, a serious knee injury to Southampton’s Fraser Forster, England’s deputy goalkeeper has added to Roy Hodgson’s problems. QPR goalkeeper Rob Green and Jack Butland of Stoke City have been called up to replace the unlucky Forster whose Saints side have the best defensive record in the league, but will have to do without him for the rest of the season.

for a major tournament finals for the first time since 1958 when he wasn’t even born. ‘You look at the quality that we've got, the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey. It's a dream that everyone shares’. Quite, Joe, but we’ve heard that somewhere before, eh, Ryan? Israel top the group having won all three of their games so far with Wales a point behind in second with two wins and two draws from their four games. Chris Coleman's side maintained their unbeaten record with a goalless draw away to the formidable-looking Belgians in November. Northern Ireland are going well in Group F, second to Romania by only a point with three wins out of four, and play Finland at home on Sunday.
