he Guardia Civil are trying to find out why a British couple that lived in the town of Xalò (also known as Jalon) between Javea and Denia in Alicante Province were killed at point-blank range. Peter and Jean Tarsey, both aged 77, were found shot dead in their villa at around 4.00pm last Sunday, after some friends went to check up on them after they had not been seen for a few days. The Tarsey's were said to have been found "locked in each other's arms on the sofa", with a green raincoat covering them. One theory is that it was a botched robbery that went horribly wrong, with the couple possibly being killed as long ago as last Friday, though Mr.Tarsey had been spotted in a café that morning. A Guardia Civil spokeswoman said:"Their friends found the door was open and there were no signs of a break-in. The couple were found dead with gunshot wounds on the sofa”. The case has been placed under sumario secreto, meaning the

police will not comment further at least until the post-mortems have been carried out. A source added: - “Mr Tarsey had one gunshot to the back of the neck and Mrs Tarsey had one shot to her face. It was a terrible scene but we believe they died instantly. We believe the murder weapon was a small pistol.” No gun was found at the scene, leading officers to quickly rule out a murder-suicide, which had been initially

reported in some media outlets. The couple, known to have been fulltime residents in Spain for 18 years, after buying their villa in 1990, had no known criminal history and "had not been doing anything strange", according to the Guardia. Officers said there was no sign of forced entry whilst a TV was found to be missing in the property and a computer had been thrown into the swimming pool. continued on page 2

continued from front page Xalo mayor Joan Miquel Garces said that the friends who raised the alarm "used to go round for lunch every Sunday". Mr Tarsey, who went by his middle name of David, is a former diver who competed for Great Britain at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, as well as in two Commonwealth Games. Ann(surname withheld) and her friend, Eduardo Juan, found the couple at around 4pm, with the Tarsey’s dog Domino barking when they arrived. The four friends went out for lunch every Sunday and Ann became concerned when she could not raise them on the phone. Ann said: - “We climbed over the fence and found the kitchen door open. I knew as we entered the house something was terribly wrong. We saw them on the sofa covered in a green raincoat that Jean had recently bought. They were covered up but their legs were visible at the bottom of the coat. We knew it must be them but Eduardo wanted to make sure, so he pulled the coat back just

to check. They were in each other's arms like he was protecting her. I really don't want to think about it as it's so upsetting.” Their house, on the edge of Xalo, is set in an acre of grounds and has a large private swimming pool and mountain views, which the

Tarseys had put up for sale last year for €230,000. The couple have two sons, Alexei and Sascha, who works as a chef on a luxury yacht in Mallorca. Neighbour, Susan Keightley said that they were trying to sell the property in order to move to Mallorca to be closer to Sascha

Picture courtesy of Objetivo Torrevieja A Torrevieja second-hand furniture and antiques outlet, Alcaba Brocante, was destroyed in a raging blaze on Tuesday night with firefighters being drafted in from around the region to quell the flames. Emergency services got called to the unit on Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas at around 10.45 pm, with the inferno threatening to spread to adjoining buildings including a car dealership. Crews from Torrevieja,

Almoradi, Orihuela, and Crevillente made sure that there was only minor smoke damage to neighbouring properties, as huge plumes of smoke hovered above the city. The fire was made worse by the combustible contents of the warehouse, with the roof being destroyed in the carnage. The blaze was brought under control by 1.00am with dampening down work continuing for another three hours.

CLEAN UP COSTLY SLAP CONTINUES

A senior official from Alicante has been inspecting the damage done to Pilar de la Horadada’s beaches by the storms a fortnight ago. Rosa de los Rios, who is responsible for the coast on Alicante Provincial Council said the Villas and Higuericas beaches in Pilar had suffered the worst damage in the whole of the province, with a big loss of sand as well as damage to the Sardinero boardwalk. Local council officials pointed out the need for plans to be put into place to stop such damage happening again. Meanwhile, Orihuela Costa's beaches and walkways have been cleaned up in time for the busy Easter period, with the main problem being at La Caleta beach which suffered the most during the recent storms. On the Costa Calida, strong winds had blown sand all over pavements in La Manga, and left some of the beaches bare. In San Pedro del Pinatar, over two thousand cubic metres of sand had to be brought in to Villanitos beach, and in Los Alcazares the sand had to be evened out, and seaweed dragged away.

BRAVE ROOKIE

A rookie San Isidro policeman had to be taken to the Vega Baja hospital after being injured in a brawl at a local bar last Friday. He'd received a call to help break up a fight started by a Polish drunk at the La Granadina bar on the industrial estate, and with the Guardia Civil unable to provide any immediate backup, the officer, who was in the middle of his probationary period with the local police, bravely tried to intervene. The Polish man was aggressive towards other customers and even decided to urinate around the bar area, but he was sober enough to leave the young officer with injuries to his face and elbow. The bar owner and other horrified customers successfully stopped the policeman from suffering further injury. The Guardia eventually came and arrested the irate East European, whilst the police union have slammed the fact that the officer was the only person on duty in San Isidro that evening and working alone, which they say is illegal. They are now planning legal action against the San Isidro authority.

MAN KNIFED

A 40 year old Bolivian man was stabbed to death in Crevillente on Saturday night, with the Guardia Civil arresting a 32 year old man some two hours after the incident, which happened at 10.45 pm.

An Alicante appeal court has upheld giving a man a three month jail term in addition to a six month restraining order for slapping his 13 son year old in the face. The teenager was hit for arriving home late from an evening with friends at one in the morning. The father, from Aspe in Alicante Province, had appealed the original verdict after the incident in June last year. The boy had been continuously late over successive nights, and when he rolled in two hours late, his father struck him. The teenager ran away to his maternal grandmother who complained to the Guardia Civil, though the boy refused to denounce his father, and at last year's court hearing said that he got what he deserved. The father denied assault whilst a medical report suggests a "low grade" slap. The father will not be sent to jail as it was a sentence under two years and a first offence, but his main reason for appeal was over the restraining order which he said would do his son more harm than good.

SCHOOL CRUMBLES

Part of a wall ledge of the ailing Príncipe de España school in Rojales collapsed on Tuesday lunchtime, prompting a fresh call from the PTA president, Pepi Gutierrez, for an immediate start to the tendering process for a new building which has been promised by the Valencian Government. Gutierrez said that it was a stroke of luck that none of the pupils were in the vicinity of the wall, which they normally are at that time, as they were involved in a football match. Parents and teachers at the school remain suspicious of the Valencian pledge which they see as a stunt before next month’s regional elections.

MORE SEATS SAINTS ALIVE Alicante-Elche airport will be offering a one point six percent rise on the number of flight seats available this summer compared to 2014. Though there is a tiny rise in the European market, and a more significant six per cent hike in domestic services, the biggest increase comes with flights to and from North Africa, with a 25 per cent leap in services, with 177 thousand seats available.

HOT START Semana Santa (Holy Week) got off to a blistering beginning, with Monday recording the warmest March day on the Costa Blanca since 1988. Temperatures reached as high as 32 degrees Celsius around Torrevieja and other areas thanks to high pressure coming in from the Azores, with more average but still respectable values kicking in from yesterday (Wednesday). The forecast for the Easter weekend is mainly good, though there is an outside chance of a shower on Sunday

A new bronze statue of San Javier’s patron saint was unveiled amidst fireworks and a blessing from the Bishop of Cartagena on Monday. The two metre high structure of San Francisco Javier, sculpted by Juan José Quirós, is at the forefront of the recent enhancements to the Plaza de España in the town.

BIKER KILLED

A 59 year old motorcyclist man died yesterday (Wednesday) in Torrevieja after colliding with a car on the Acequión road. Earlier in the day, five people were injured, three of them seriously, after two cars were involved in a crash at around 8.00 am on the N332 in Santa Pola. The three severely injured were taken to Alicante General Hospital, with the others being treated in Elche.

ON THE UP PROFILE UPPED CATRAL SAVINGS

Spain's economic growth in 2015 is set to double that of last year at 2.8%, according to the Bank of Spain. This will be only the second year the economy has grown since the start of the financial crisis in 2008, and makes Spain the fastestexpanding in the Eurozone after the Republic of Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta, as well as its fourth-largest economy. These results are largely due to a fall in oil prices making the cost of distribution of goods reduce, creating a greater profit margin, together with European Central Bank (BCE) funds of €1 trillion ploughed into the Eurozone.

Rafal’s mayor says he wants to attract more tourists to the town as it celebrates its 375th anniversary. Manuel Pineda told reporters that since Rafal is so well placed within half an hour’s drive of the coast and the main centres like Alicante City and Murcia City, it ought to pitch itself as an alternative to visitors to enjoy what the inland Vega Baja town can provide. Pineda added that social network initiatives will be expanded to promote the area still further.

Catral council will be moving onto the second phase of its plan to save energy and cut electric bills by installing another tranche of new street lights. Some 155 lights have already been replaced, and another 222 are set to be installed by the spring of 2016. Measures so far have reduced the annual electricity bill for the council by around four thousand euros a year.

POET, AND OLD BUT NEW ROAD DEATH THEY KNOW IT

A 44 year old man has died after a collision between a car and a motorbike on the AP7 in the Elche area. The accident happened last Sunday lunchtime with emergency services unable to revive the man who died from multiple injuries.

NEW BINS

The Orihuela city district of San Isidro basked in glorious sunshine last weekend for this year's Murals of San Isidro event, which had been postponed for a week due to bad weather. Artists from around the area, and from further afield came to bring a splash of colour to the city area, with over 40 new latest creations paying the annual tribute to the famous local poet, Miguel Hernández.

HAPPY CASAS More than eight in 10 Spaniards are 'very happy' with the homes they live in, particularly their location, natural light, and size, according to research carried out by the DIY chain Leroy Merlín. The majority - 82.3% - gave their homes a rating of 7.69 out of 10, with over a third saying they most liked the area their property was situated in, just under a quarter saying its amount of natural light was what made them happiest about their houses or apartments, and one in five putting its size top of the list of its assets. Comfort was most valued by 17.3%.

Guardamar's new archaeological park at La Fonteta should be open to visitors by the end of the year according to the Valencia region's Director General of Culture, Marta Alonso. The regional government has put in one million euros into a site that is unique to Spain in terms of the history of Islam in the country. The area features a Phoenician city, which dates from the 8th century B.C. A visitor centre will help to tell the story of why so many different civilisations chose to settle near to the mouth of the Segura River. On a visit to Guardamar, Alonso gave a presentation about the site and said it would give the area a great opportunity to attract a different kind of tourist.

SAFE PLAYAS

Santa Pola council is spending 800 thousand euros on new dustbins across the municipality including Gran Alacant. Officials say that many of the current containers are in a bad state of repair and the new ones will start to appear after Easter. 500 units will be used for organic waste, whilst 250 will be used for paper and other waste matter.

LAND DEAL

NEW SURFACE Torrevieja council has awarded the beach lifeguard service contract to Ebone Servicios for the Easter period running through to this Monday (April 6th). The 32 thousand euro franchise brings Easter cover back to the area (as reported in last week's Courier) after it was cut last year. A tender has been advertised for the summer service, whilst the current Easter coverage takes in the beaches at La Mata, Los Locos, Cura and Los Náufragos. Meanwhile, the Elche region beaches at El Altet, Arenales, Carabassí, Pinet and La Several of Almoradi's key streets are being resurfaced after Marina all have lifeguard cover running (pictured) through till a grant from the Alicante Provincial Council. Around 20 routes April 6th. The 15-strong team will also have access to defibare set to benefit, including those in the area of the Plaza de rillators for the first time, and will man the beaches between la Libertad (pictured). 11.00 and 5.00pm.

Torrevieja council has approved the change in use for the 'La Ceñuela' farmland between Torrevieja Hospital and the N332 which can now accommodate new housing, potentially around two and a half thousand homes. There's been a longstanding argument since 2002 over the change in usage for the land, though the controlling Partido Popular on the council say they've also made a deal on making part of the CV95 into a dual carriageway between the N332 and the hospital as a condition of any development work, in addition to building two footbridges over the expanded road. Opposition parties in a heated council debate slammed the environmental impact that the project would have and criticised the way that the vote and announcement had been rushed through after some 13 years, just in time for May's local elections.

SAN JAVIER CHECKS

Eleven extra security workers have been hired for Murcia's San Javier airport to comply with the recently introduced European directives over hand luggage. With the facility about to launch a full schedule, the extra staff were all brought in by yesterday (Wednesday) to deal with the extra Easter services. Meanwhile unions at the airport have said that there does not seem to be any impending sign of transfer to the deserted facility at Corvera, as they are expecting to get their winter schedules shortly which will take them through to March 2016. The airport will be offering 30 different destinations this summer, as opposed to just five winter season locations. Ryanair will be offering ten different routes to the UK; Norwegian Air will offer four services to Norway, and there will be flights to Austria, Ireland and Czech Republic, as well as to Madrid, which add up to considerably more than were on offer last year.

TOP PERROS

Dog-lovers in Spain are more likely to have Yorkshire Terriers, German Shepherds or Labradors, followed by French Bulldogs, Cocker Spaniels and Chihuahuas, according to a survey on pet-owners in the country. Research conducted by Veterinary Management Studies for QVET says the majority of dogs kept as pets in Spain are pure-breeds, although if 'mongrel' was a breed it would be the most common at 52.1% of the total. Dogs in Spanish homes are getting smaller, with the number of littler breeds going up from 47% to 49% in the last three years. Maltese and Chihuahuas have grown in popularity since the end of 2011, followed by Golden Retrievers.

TIGHT MURCIANS

The average Spanish resident spends just over 800 euros a year on eating out in restaurants – equivalent to 67 euros a month or slightly less than 15.50 euros a week, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Northerners and those in land-locked central regions shell out the most on dining out – Extremadura, to the west of Spain, leads the field at an average of 982 euros a year per head, 18.88 euros a week or 81.83 euros a month. In contrast locally, the Murcia region is pretty much bottom near the bottom with a typical inhabitant spending 628 euros a year on dining out, being 12.08 euros a week or 52.33 euros a month. The spend in the Valencian region, including the Costa Blanca comes just below the national average at 795 euros per year.

WASTE OF TIME

The Valencian region's system of encouraging non-Spaniards that do not qualify for a health SIP card appears to have been a flop. Since the scheme was passed into law nearly two years ago, only 290 people who hold Spanish residency after moving to the country, are paying the 60 euros a month to subscribe to the public health plan.

THE DADDY OF ALL STRANGERS

A STRANGER came into the pub the other evening and, as was customary in such a rare circumstance, we all scurried to the opposite end of the bar and gawked at the newcomer. As the self-designated meeter and greeter, Andromeda Arkwright, the only woman in our group, went over to introduce herself. 'Let me be the one to break the ice,' she said, thrusting out her hand. Before the stranger could respond, Daft Barry piped up: 'Actually, I once melted a cube of ice simply by staring at it. Mind you, it took a lot longer than I thought it would.' Andromeda turned and looked daggers at the youngest member of our band of pub regulars. 'Don't be daft, Barry,' she admonished. 'Can't you see that I am welcoming a stranger into our midst. Best behaviour, if you don't mind.' Daft Barry appeared to shrivel on the spot. 'That lady frightens me,' he whispered into my ear. 'It's okay, Barry,' I said. 'But please do as Andromeda says and hush up while she gets to the bottom of who this unknown person is.' Daft Barry appeared puzzled. 'What do you mean by getting to his bottom? It sounds a bit unfriendly to me.' Dave the barman threw a bar towel over Daft Barry's head to plunge him into darkness and thus shut him up. Then switching on an ingratiating smile, he said

to the stranger: 'Perhaps our delightful gentleman guest would like to purchase a drink from our extensive range of ales and

deadbeats though they may be.' 'And that is why I love you deeply,' cooed Dave the barman as Andromeda

opened his mouth. 'Bloody hell, fellas. No need to stand on ceremony. Don't you recognise me? It's only been 19 years.'

the bar towel from his head, he stared closely at the stranger and yelled: 'Daddy!' Yes, Jack the Lad was

wines.' 'Yes, indeed,' seconded Andromeda Arkwright. 'If you'd like to sit down at a stool of your choice, mein host will bring you over a refreshing libation.' Dave the barman hissed into Andromeda's ear: 'He'll have to pay for it first. I'm tired of being a free funnel to you lot of deadbeats.' Andromeda glared at Dave the barman and hissed back: 'Steady on, mate. I not only pay my way in this pub but I also put money behind the bar for your loyal customers --

slipped him a tenner. All was quiet for a while as we deadbeats . . . er, I mean pub pals . . . eyeballed the newcomer. Indoor Lou, Fearful Phil, Daft Barry and yours truly waited for the stranger to speak. Even Fag Ash Bill, who was outside on the pavement smoking like crazy, pressed his ear against the window in an attempt to hear what was going on over the humming thrum (thrumming hum?) of the passing traffic. And then the stranger

It was our turn for our mouths to fall open. 'Blimey, it's Jack the Lad!' gasped Indoor Lou. 'It is indeed!' whooped Fearful Phil. 'And I concur!' I agreed. 'You still owe me for the pint of bitter you bought in 1996!' declared Dave the barman. Andromeda Arkwright looked bewildered because being a relatively new arrival in town she'd never before met Jack the Lad. Daft Barry looked equally baffled but for a different reason. Having whipped off

indeed Daft Barry's father. He had left home all those years before to seek his fortune in London. Now here he was, standing in the very pub in which he had long planned to escape and become a somebody. Daft Barry kissed his dad on the cheek and proclaimed: 'It's good to see you again but I'd better warn you that mum has divorced you and remarried. He's a smashing bloke, too.' 'No worries, kid,' said Jack the Lad. 'I've already been to see your mother

and I'm glad that she's happy. I'm only here on a bit of business anyway. Just a flying visit. 'However, before I leave I want you to know that my only regret in life is that I left home when you were a tot and I haven't seen you for all these years. But all that's going to change now. For a start I want you to come and stay with me whenever you want.' Most of us went 'Ah' and tears formed in our eyes. But Dave the barman was annoyed. 'You can't just walk back in here and pretend you didn't abandon your pub mates and your family, not necessarily in that order of importance, of course. You, sir, are an absolute cad!' Jack the Lad sighed. 'You're quite right, Dave,' he said. 'But I hope this gesture of apology may be of recompense for all the anguish I caused you.' And he flung a bundle of ÂŁ20 notes onto the counter. Dave the barman turned white with pleasant shock. 'Thank you, my old mate,' he said. 'You are indeed a gentleman.' Jack the Lad shuffled his feet. 'I'll tell you what though. I don't remember the floor of this pub being so lumpy.' 'That's because you're standing on me!' retorted the oldest member of our group, Ol' Red Eyes, who was taking one of his mammoth naps on the carpet. 'Now, if you'll help me up, Jack, you can buy me a double scotch with a vodka chaser.'

SHARK “FIN” ON FACTS Tourist chiefs in Benidorm and around the Costa Blanca are allegedly keeping quiet about killer sharks, in case visitors decide to go elsewhere on holiday, according to a story in the Daily Star! The "exclusive" story, which appears to have come straight out of a plot from the hit seventies move Jaws, where the Mayor of the town of Amity wanted to hush up his shark problem, seems to revolve around three sharks being washed up on the shores of Benidorm last month. A string of unidentified "locals" spoke to the paper all believing in a conspiracy theory that the council was preferring to keep things quiet, so as not to put off tourists. A "local" is quoted as saying: - "It's not unusual for sharks to be spotted every now and then. But three in the space of a few days is a worry. Officials might say they're not dangerous species but three-metre sharks swimming around a popular tourist beach isn't exactly good news. It has definitely made people think twice about taking a dip. The whole thing seems to have been swept under the rug." "Locals" also claim to the Daily Star that council officials have tried to hush up the deployment of shark nets at the town's beaches. Another unnamed "resident" said: "Benidorm has offshore shark netting in place all along its four beach areas and beyond, although it chooses not to advertise this fact". The "resident" appeared to have all the shark facts at his or her fingertips by saying: "There are 15 potentially dangerous sharks in the Mediterranean, out of approximately 46 different species. Obviously the tourist boards in the area prefer it to be kept quiet. Knowing there are likely to be sharks where you are bathing with your family in the Mediterranean is not conducive to encouraging tourism." The article had no comment whatsoever from the Benidorm authorities.

NEW LOOK

A Barcelona hospital has carried out the world's most complex face transplant, reconstructing the lower face, neck, mouth, tongue and back of the throat of a 45 year old man terribly disfigured by disease. A team of 45 physicians, nurses, anaesthesiologists and other health professionals carried out the 27-hour operation in early February at the d'Hebron University Hospital.

TRIP STOPPED

Police have arrested four members of a Moroccan family, including two children, who were allegedly about to travel to Syria to become jihadi fighters. The Interior Ministry said a couple and two boys, both aged under 16, were arrested in the north-eastern city of Badalona, near Barcelona. The boys were suspected of planning to travel last Tuesday to Syria, via Morocco and Turkey. The ministry said authorities believe another son of the couple joined Islamic State in Syria and died last year. It added that the two children had left school in Spain to study the Quran in Morocco.

MARIA’S MOVE

The opposition leader on Los Montesinos council, Maria Paredes, has quit the Partido Popular and will stand as an independent after the regional PP executive imposed a different mayoral candidate for May's local elections. Pascual Simon was parachuted in to surprisingly replace Paredes, who stood for the PP four years ago, She in turn, along with all but one of her PP council colleagues, have joined the independent AIMS grouping in Montesinos. Paredes will lead the electoral slate for AIMS along with other experienced candidates in next month's local elections, in a move which is seen as severely hampering the PP's chances of taking control of the council, AIMS will campaign for a new approach for the Montesinos area which has been governed by the PSOE and Mayor Jose Maria Butron since the municipality was created in the early nineties.

BALED OUT

Three Real Madrid fans who attacked players' cars, including Gareth Bale's, following the recent El Clasico defeat to Barcelona have been fined by a Spanish government commission. Last month's21 defeat to the Catalan side led to unpleasant scenes outside Real's Valdebebas training ground as the squad made their way home. A video soon emerged of Bale's Bentley being attacked as he left the training ground and clearly showed the identity of the culprits, which the club used to track down the guilty fans a few days later. The anti-violence in sport commission imposed a fine on the three men and has also issued a six-month fan from all sports stadiums.

RETURN TO SENDER

A package containing "a suspicious white substance" led to the evacuation of a Madrid post office on Saturday. Emergency services said 23 people underwent decontamination as a safety precaution. "An envelope arrived with a suspicious white substance potentially carrying a biological or chemical risk," said a spokesman for Madrid's SAMUR municipal rescue service. The incident happened at a post office located inside the Cybele Palace, which also houses Madrid's city hall.

LIGHTS OUT Over 10,000 towns and cities around the world - including 223 in Spain - joined in the WWF 'Planet Hour' last Saturday night to raise awareness of global warming. In Spain, famous monuments were plunged into darkness including the iconic Mosque in Córdoba, the ultra-modern Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona, the Torre de Oro ('Golden Tower') in Sevilla and the New Bridge of Ronda, or the Puente Nuevo (pictured) in Malaga province. Town halls including those in the Valencia and Murcia regions also switched out their lights, as did local monuments across the country.

RIVER DRAMA

A young woman who became trapped by the current after jumping in the river Turia to rescue her dog has been pulled out alive - as has her pet. Firefighters were called out last Saturday lunchtime to Manises, near Valencia airport, when they heard that a girl was being swept downriver after diving in to save one of her two dogs she was walking on the banks. They found her at about 100 metres from the Puente Nuevo ('New Bridge') in the town. Emergency services abseiled into the gushing water on a rope and managed to haul the woman out in an operation that took 40 minutes. At the same time, other firemen rescued the dog who had fallen in, and caught the second animal who was waiting on the bank and barking in distress. Both animals and their owner were said to be safe and sound. The dog being rescued bit the fireman's hand, which had to be treated by a nurse, as a result of his terror at being caught up in the current.

GAG ON

A ’public safety law' which can involve fines of up to €600,000 for unauthorised demonstrations has been approved with the votes of the ruling Partido Popular in Madrid. Legal governing bodies in Spain and Europe have warned the PP that the contents of the law may go against the Spanish Constitution and certain human rights regulations, but this has not stopped the legislation getting the green light. It will come into effect in July, just four months before the general election, with all the opposition parties saying that they will scrap it immediately if they get into power.

FEELING GREEDY? AVOID THESE COMMON INVESTMENT MISTAKES

Mark Harrison Partner AES International

With huge gains in stocks, shares, bonds and property since the deep bear market of 2007, it is a good time to review investment portfolios, consider taking profits and diversifying your investments. When things are going well, i.e. profitably, investors sometimes don't pay as much attention as they should to the most common mistakes that investors make. The importance of the basics of long term investing, asset allocation and investment diversification, are forgotten when money is being made. One of the greatest investors of all time is Warren Buffet, who reminds us: "Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful." In other words, when everybody has made a lot of money, it's time to reconsider investments, take profits and become more cautious. But this is easier said than done! Most of us cut short our winning investments too soon but hang on to our losing investments for too long because of the way our minds are wired. It's known as the disposition effect. Understanding how human minds work when it comes to investing is a part of behaviourial finance, a field which studies the human impact on markets. Getting to grips with our minds is the first step towards helping us understand and potentially alleviate the psychological pain of a market downturn when it eventually comes. Because we know from experience a downturn has always come. We've made a beautiful infographic on investor psychology, to try and help our clients avoid making common

11

investment mistakes. Everyone prefers to celebrate success not failure. We forget what investment pain feels like, because not many of us have suffered pain in recent years with the markets booming. Therefore, it is highly likely that many of us are currently in a period of over-confidence with our investments, believing that their investment decisions are superior to those of others. As a result, they may be more inclined to make risky investments, encouraged by the long period of the bull-markets. Perhaps a reminder from one of the world's greatest investors again rings some bells: "The line separating investment and speculation becomes blurred when most market participants have recently enjoyed triumphs." Simply taking on more and more investment risk does not guarantee more return, but it does pretty much guarantee more pain. However, if we hold a well managed investment long enough, we should expect a positive return. So what can investors do to reduce the psychological pain of losses when investing? There is one strategy that private investors and their financial advisers should follow to take away the risk of irrational behaviour. It's the closest thing to a free lunch and it's called a strategic asset allocation. This weighting of different assets in your portfolio will make the biggest difference to returns and must be within the investor's tolerance to risk, or they may be in for a very uncomfortable journey. KEEPING YOUR DOGGY CALM

This week, I’ve written a quick guide on how to give your dog what they need in order for them to be calm and balanced. First on the agenda is exercise. This aspect is simply critical and for many dogs, a quick stroll around the block, just will not cut it, when it comes to draining your dogs energy. You have to look at what type of dog you have and what level energy they are and then give the appropriate exercise. You can buy dog bike leads, where it connects to the bike and your dog clips on and runs along safely next to the bike and all dogs I have worked with love this. Next is making sure your dog has consistent rules to follow, just like we have to as human beings. If there were a group of wild dogs living out in the mountains, I can assure you that discipline is very high on the every day agenda, in order to keep things peaceful. Affection is so important and you must be very vigilant of when you are giving your dogs affection. Each time you give a dog affection you are nurtur-

ing the state of mind they are currently in, so mine only get affection when they are calm. Feeding your dog is also a very important time. Don’t let your dog jump up, while you are preparing their food. When I feed all of my dogs, the calmest one gets fed first, so again I am still nurturing calm, which is the key to everything. Many dogs suffer from separation anxiety and again this is something that is always nurtured by the humans. Never make a fuss of your dog when you are leaving the house and also when you arrive back home. Even when you go to a different room and then return to the room where your dogs are, just do it in a normal way, without making a fuss. Dogs never actually

get the fact that we sometimes have to go to places without them. For me that is one of the charms of a dog,as they believe that we should always do things together. But because we live in a world, where this is sometimes not possible, it is only fair to our dogs that we condition our dogs to be calm when we are not around. Recall is another aspect

you need to look at, as there may be times when your dog is in danger and you have to get them back to you straight away. To start practicing the recall, you can do this at home. Call your dog to you several times throughout the day and each time they come back to you, they get one of three things. Either a treat, but I am talking about a high level treat, like cheese, or sausage

etc…. Next time you do the recall they can get their favourite toy, or simply just affection. By mixing it up, your dog will always want to come back to you. For our dogs to be calm, you must remember that we need to be calm, so practicing some sort of calm in your daily lives is really important. Whether it be meditation, yoga, or just sitting in a quite room for 10 minutes, with no phone, radio or TV and just quieten your mind. I can not begin to tell you how critical this part is. We live in a world of chaos, where our minds are always at work and this is one of the biggest diseases that harm humans. Finally, always think positive thoughts of your dogs.

Never think negative. Each though you think, gives of an energy to your dog, so you must try and be positive at all times. I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Easter along with your furry best friends. www.thedogyouneed.com is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. BOFFINS UNITED Britain is reaching out to scientists in Spain in the hope of strengthening the exchange of knowledge to further scientific research. A new initiative launched by the British Embassy in Madrid aims to capitalize on the socalled "brain drain" by linking up scientists that have moved abroad. The new British Scientists in Spain (BSS) Network establishes a communications platform between the British and Spanish scientific communities. The project, which has the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, (FECYT) will see the creation of a dedicated LinkedIn group that will be used as a tool to spot bilateral co-operations opportunities. Simon Manley, the British ambassador to Madrid, emphasized the importance of collaborative endeavour. "Successful collaboration lies at the heart of successful science," the ambassador said as he launched the initiative with a reception at his residence.

CAR BOOST

Spanish new car sales rose 40.5 per cent year-on-year in March, according to the Anfac manufacturers' association, marking 19 straight months of growth as a government subsidy scheme keeps spurring purchases. Anfac said 112,299 vehicles were sold in March - the first month in over four and half years that sales surpassed the 100,000 mark.

HOW TO STOP ANOTHER “LUBITZ” The whole world was shocked, dismayed and completely bereft as news unfolded last week that the co-pilot of a Germanwings passenger aircraft deliberately flew into the side of a mountain in the foothills of the French Alps, killing all 150 aboard. But who is ultimately to blame for this appalling tragedy, the copilot, Andreas Lubitz, or the doctors who knew of his physical and mental conditions and hid behind patient confidentiality? Patient confidentiality was introduced by the medical profession with the very best of intentions, but it is now seen as not only putting lives at risk, but is actually killing people so now the medical profession must put their house in order. Lubitz was a successful pilot with everything to live for - until he was diagnosed with an eye problem which he, no doubt believed, would end his flying career. This knowledge, coupled with unfortunate relationships with women, set him on a spiral of depression which culminated in his decision to lock the pilot out of his cabin and put the aircraft into a descent into the mountainside. He became yet another suicide victim and a mass murderer in one moment. I know all about suicide - I used to cover so many inquests of victims. I was a cub reporter at Eastbourne in the 1950s and used to go with police to recover bodies at the foot of Beachy Head - notorious for suicide jumpers. At that age I could never understand anyone having the "courage" to jump over the 300ft cliffs, or to jump in front of a train, or jump off a river bridge or walk onto a motorway in front of oncoming traffic. Now, with the advantage of age, I realise that it was not courage but

absolute despair - a mental illness - and today we´re seeing it with suicide bombers, as well as pilots prepared to take their planes into the far oceans and ditch them or crash them into mountainsides. It seems it is the new suicide "fashion" to take as many innocent people with you as possible when you decide to end your own life. And it's because of this, that every doctor owes it to humanity to disregard patient confidentially when they spot the signs. What´s needed is a universal law which requires people who have other people´s lives in their hands, to sign an undertaking that they will submit to periodic medical and psychological tests and to have those tests made available to their employers. No Ifs, no buts! Yes, it´s good that airlines are requiring that there should be two people in cockpits from now on and that one person is never left alone. But that, on its own, is not enough. The public must be assured that every single person in charge of a plane, train, coach, or a medic (like Shipman) is not fast becoming the next mass murderer, hell bent on taking as many lives with him or her as possible. We've been on our travels this last week, visiting Jerez and Seville, and can totally recommend to you these two totally different but equally exciting cities. It's lovely visiting different areas of Spain as independent travellers, because it forces you to learn more Spanish culture and language and, as I'm always saying, stretches the brain and keeps Alzheimer's at bay. (I just hope I'm right). Anyway, our mini break was brilliant, save for one annoying episode. Firstly, let me say that I, alongside the vast majority of you, don't

like being ripped off and that's what happened to us in Jerez. We went to the Tio Pepe bodega and enjoyed a most interesting tour of the historic distillery. We met some people there who were on an excursion from the P&O cruise liner Britannia which had docked in Cadiz that day. We quickly

haven´t got the equivalent then I commend it to them and one of their ports of call should be the Gonzalez Byass bodega, which is charging visitors more for their own products than people can buy in the shops. Just imagine the mark-up! Unfair or what? It seems the penny is

learned that we had paid less for our visit to the Tio Pepe distillery than they had and that our tickets entitled us to four wine and sherry tastings, while theirs allowed two - pleasing to say the least! This rip-off worked in our favour. We then went to the wine shop and, rather stupidly as it turned out, bought a litre bottle of Soberano brandy and some other items. We paid 9.50 euros for the brandy, which we discovered, was a euro less at the Carrefour supermarket in Jerez, a stone´s throw away. When we went to Gibraltar the following day, Napoleon brandy was a mere 3.95 pounds - but that's an unfair comparison because of the tax difference. When you go to a factory outlet shop, or a factory where products are made, you expect to pay less, not more than the price at retail shops outside. There´s a TV programme in the UK called Rip Off Britain. If the Spanish

finally dropping among voters in Britain of the dangers of a Labour government propped up by the SNP. This prospect has been voted the worst possible outcome of the forthcoming general election. Six out of 10 voters in a poll said they would be 'dismayed' by a Labour-SNP alliance. This compares with 54 per cent who said they did not want a Labour-Lib Dem coalition and 52 per cent dreading another pact between David Cameron and Nick Clegg, according to the pollsters YouGov. Despite the unpopularity of an SNP-Labour alliance, Alex Salmond has revealed that the party will do whatever it can to make Mr Miliband Prime Minister in order to wring as many concessions out of him as possible. And Miliband, despite all the protestations to the contrary, will go to bed with the SNP to get into number 10, regardless of the damage this will do to Britain. There´s no doubt that coali-

tions can work - the Tory/Lib Dem alliance has done much to get the UK out of the economic mess Labour left it with. But a Labour/SNP alliance would spell disaster for Britain - far worse than if the Scots had won their independence last year. What a shame they didn´t. There isn't much worse in my book than wretched clergy who are total hypocrites. So many of them have been proved to be "people of the cloth" simply for what they can get out of it - whether it be power, money or control over others (in America the average pay of a pastor is 135 thousand dollars). But the very worst of them are these apologies for the human race that hide behind their frocks to prey on children. Yet another Catholic priest has done just that sexually assaulting a teenage boy in a children´s home. I am so pleased that this time a judge had the common sense to jail this wretch for three years. Anthony McSweeney, 68, abused the 15-year-old while working at Grafton Close Children's Home in Hounslow. He assaulted the boy with his friend John Stingemore, the manager of the care home, who died before the trial. As part of his defence, he had the affrontry to say he was too fat to fit a teenager on him. McSweeney, who has been described as morbidly obese, used the defence when he denied molesting boys between 1979 and 1981. As well indecent assault, he was also found guilty of three counts of making indecent images of children. At his sentencing at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Alistair McCreath said: "He has a voyeuristic interest in children, either in seeing them unclothed, or in seeing them

sexually abused by others." During the trial, it emerged the Catholic Church nearly dropped him when his cleaner found sex toys, truncheons and indecent videos of teenage boys at St Peter's Catholic Church in Essex in 1998. But after six months he was moved to a new parish, St George's, in Norwich - after he was threatened with being "banished" from the priesthood. How any congregation, or the church leaders, can have suspicions of a priest and do nothing about it, beats me. It's exactly in the same league as wrongdoings by police, social services departments, the NHS et al who prefer to cover it up and lie rather than see a "good name" tarnished. The church is undeniably aware that increasingly people are turning their back on religion - and the antics of sexually predatory priests only hastens the process. I cannot let my column end without my usual example of stupid council antics and this is a classic. A woman aged 92 died last year and her next of kin has just been sent a council tax bill for her - for a penny! The crackpot council is Stockport, which sent the demand after they discovered that the woman owed the debt after moving into a care home. It cost the council 60 times more in postage than what they recovered. Not only that, but the council even said in their demand they were prepared to allow the 1p to be paid by instalments! A Stockport Council spokesman said: 'This was an error. Our internal systems let Mrs Watson's family down on this occasion and we apologise to her family for any distress this has caused.' Methinks Stockport Council need to give their internal systems a major overhaul!

SHOW SOME RESPECT

What do you do if you are doing someone you consider a friend or acquaintance a favour and one day you decide that you don´t want to or cannot do it anymore? I imagine the majority of you are saying that you would at the very least tell the person concerned that you are not going to continue with this favour, even if you don´t want to say why. After all, the most basic form of good manners is to let the person know. A short text or phone call is all that you need to do and then you are both aware of the situation. On the other hand what is the worst thing that could be done? Again I am guessing that most of you would say “do nothing!” It really would be rude to not take a couple of minutes to let the friend know wouldn´t it? Especially if that person was relying on the favour and that favour didn´t take very much time out of your day and no real effort on your part. I´m talking about something like maybe giving some of your food to a neighbour.

That may well be food that you had to cook anyway for yourself, but if you suddenly stopped and the neighbour thought his or her food was coming but it never arrived, then they would be hungry. The neighbour could of course have cooked their own dinner but they didn´t because they were waiting for their friend, and they are left wondering why the food has suddenly stopped without warning. At the end of the day, common respect is what we ask from anyone. If you treat people with respect, then you should be able to expect the same courtesy in response. If you are doing a favour for someone and then for some reason you can´t continue to do it, or if you plan to help someone and then realise that you can´t do it in the first place, a simple message to let that person know that you are unable or unwilling to carry on is the minimum one should be able to expect. What a shame then that some people, maybe even those you consider friends,

can´t even give you that level of consideration. As far as friendships and relationships go, it is surely unwritten that common civili-

quette. The other side of courtesy is for those people who work in the service industries such as catering and leisure. Unfortunately

ty whether Spanish or English, is the most basic eti-

there are those who believe that waiters, cleaners, atten-

dants and so on aren’t actually human beings but robots whose sole purpose in life is to make those of us using their service feel as pampered as possible. Of course working in a job such as those does require a level of respect and reverence, I know, having worked in many bars and restaurants both here and in the UK, but on the flip side the customer is also expected to treat the worker as a human and not an android. My experience shows that the majority of customers, especially us British, are very polite and respectful towards all, but are some who see a waitress as somehow less important than them and seem to forget that without her, they would have to get off their backsides and get their own food! There is no excuse for being a diva, whoever you are dealing with, as we all start the same way and will end up the same after all. This of course goes for those workers too! I´m sure that we’ve all encountered the stroppy waiter or rude bar

man, but you need to be happy in your work, even if you have worked for the past six hours without a break or you´ve not been paid this month. The customer doesn´t know it and without them you´re even less likely to get some cash. I hope however that you always remember that, even though people do disregard your feelings, you are a good person and never need to stoop to their level. To those who disrespect me, I decide that I no longer wish to have anything to do with that person. I don´t get angry and once the disappointment subsides, I realise that I am a better human being than they are and carry on with my life, enjoying the true friends that I have because I know that if they have a problem with me, or can´t do something, then they will speak to me about it. The rest can fall by the wayside. Have a great Easter and remember to always treat others how you wish to be treated and karma will look after you.

Spanish 166 ¡Hola! ¿cómo estáis? I hope you´ve having a great week and looking forward to another relaxing weekend, especially with the Easter holiday. Guess what! It´s time for another revision lesson, remember the best way to check your progress is by regular testing, especially if you don´t get as many opportunities to talk Spanish as you´d like. It´s a good idea to take time to revise and then do some practise papers on what you have just revised, or learnt! However in this paper I like to give you bits of revision from several different areas of Spanish as it keeps you on your toes! So here we go with the first section, which is revision, write the following in Spanish: I don´t know what to buy my mum for her birthday, I don´t like the work in the office, I have lost my wallet, She listens to music in her car, In winter it´s very cold for playing tennis outside, This cat is very fat, I don´t feel like going to the cinema tonight, She is my favourite singer, I never watch television in the morning, What do you think of my idea?, Can I open the window? It´s just that I´m hot, This cake smells nice, can I eat it? Is it cold outside? Shall I put my coat on? yes, put it on, Now I want you to translate the following phrases: Next week I will go to France unexpectedly because I won a competition in a magazine. I will rent a car and go around the country visiting lakes and castles. I like castles and old buildings. Then I will stay in a five star hotel, I hope it will have a spa and maybe a swimming pool. I want to stay for two weeks at least, I need time to relax and unwind. When I return home I will be happy and ready to go back to work!

Now put the following words in their diminutives: perro; mesa; abuelo; balón; café; chaqueta; niña; sobrina; pelo; beso. Now I´m going to give you the titles of some English language songs, however the first and third words are in Spanish and the second is in English but as an anagram, see how many you can get, remember the form may not be exactly correct because of the fact that the middle word is in English: Llamar ym quizás; enciende ym fuego; dinero rof nada; autovía ot infierno; nacido ot correr; loco rfo ti; pensando tuo voz alta; canción gnsu azul; frío sa hielo; escalera ot cielo; quédate thiw mi; andar hist manera; este elo casa. I´m now going to write an answer and two possible questions, all you need to do is choose the correct question: A.Sí, María habla español. I hope you have a bit of fun with today´s lesson. Remember Spanish is hard work but should also be enjoyable and something that keeps you occupied, you are learning Spanish to be able to communicate with people so go on out and use it. Have a great week, answers in the next edition.

TRELI ON THE TELLY THE HOST WITH THE MOST

with ALEX TRELINSKI I’ve been a big fan of Dermot O’Leary hosting The X Factor on ITV, and after eight years, he’s called it quits or perhaps gone before he was pushed out (ITV deny that). But does it really matter that much who presents a programme where the format is really king? O’Leary took over from the robotic Kate Thornton back in 2007, and though he was miles better, Thornton can rightly say that she was in charge when The X Factor really did get the massive audience figures. The fact that Thornton was mediocre didn’t bother me, as it was the format that ruled. So is Simon Cowell somewhat deluded over getting the admittedly good combi-

nation of former Xtra Factor presenters Olly Murs and Caroline Flack to present the big show? It’s the format folks, and people may just have got tired of The X Factor. It’s as simple as that. Take the legendary B r u c e Forsyth who hosted two great formats. Back in the seventies, Brucie defected to ITV to host the flop that was Brucie’s Big Night, with many people declaring The Generation Game as dead and buried. Up popped up Larry Grayson who made the show his own, because the viewers still

liked the concept, as well as taking to Everard’s friend! It happened again last year, when there was concern over Strictly Come Dancing when Forsyth quit, but because of the sheer strength of the programme, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman presided over one of the strongest seasons

yet. In some people’s minds they were even better than Brucie, but it was the show that really mattered. Strictly’s format looked far stronger than that of The X Factor. The business over the boorish Jeremy Clarkson being rightly sacked as a Top Gear presenter for his disgraceful behaviour towards a

producer has led to many people asking whether the show has a future. What utter bilge! Top Gear is not t h e Jeremy Clarkson show, and ironically Dermot O’Leary is being touted seriously as h i s replacement, as well as Chris Evans. I’ll bet you anything that Top Gear will be around for a long long time, and that Clarkson will fade into the distance. Far far too much is made in UK television over what presenter is fronting which news bulletin, or whether the

likes of Ant & Dec can prop up a poor format. The talented Geordies have fronted turkeys over the last few years, and you are not telling me that Britain’s Got Talent or I’m a Celebrity would fold if they were not there. Yes, you want good articulate nonautocue reading folk in front of the camera, who can react in a relaxed way to the unexpected. Of the newer breed, Emma Willis is outstanding on Big Brother and The Voice (now that would be coup for The X Factor!), but I suggest that the TV companies should concentrate on getting the right formats in the first place and keeping them refreshed, rather than worrying too much over expensive presenters that don’t really deliver the ratings and often have over-inflated egos.

Secrets of Great British Castles 21:00 - CHANNEL 5

Historian Dan Jones explores the turbulent past of six of Britain's most famous strongholds, beginning by heading to the south-east of England to visit Dover Castle. He reveals that Henry II ordered its construction not only as a statement of royal power, but also out of guilt for the murder of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1170. Dan discovers how a vast network of tunnels was used to defend the castle, including underground barracks built during the Napoleonic Wars and a nuclear bunker created during the Cold War.

RICHARD CAVENDER

Bluemoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Carlos was having problems sending email.

ADVICE: Val wanted to know if DropBox was safe.

Q

Hi Richard, just a quick question, I have received and email with attachment for photos for house sale. I clicked on ok to receive and then clicked on download and it came up with DROPBOX and a sign up for free box and create an account. I don't normally sign up for anything on the computer and only use it for everyday things, so I just want to know if this is a safe site to download and will not put things on that I don't want.

Hola Richard, I wonder if you've came across that: I can send all emails with one exception, all those with ...@domainname.de . They are coming back after some 7 to 10 days saying: host IP-... refused to talk to me: 554 IP-.... A problem occured. Contact user@domainname.de to clarify. I have never got an answer. A french friend told me that they run a blacklist. I can however receive mails from there. Hi Carlos, it’s hard for me to help you without the actual email “bounce” that you receive, but based on the information you have sent and the “554 SMTP” error it seems likely that the company who you are trying to email are either blocking your emails – likely because your IP address could be on a blocked range (it’s not unusual here in Spain) or that you have the email address incorrect – I assume the former as you seem to receive email ok from this person.

A

If you would like me to investigate more for you then drop me the full email bounce report.

Q

Hi Val, yes this is quite normal, it essentially means that the person sending you the email (and pictures) has packaged them up using DropBox and you will need to open up a free account in order to view them.

A

You couldn’t always ring your friends to let them know you haven’t died ;-)

Allen wasn’t getting words underlined for misADVICE: Brian wanted to know how to enable cookies in ADVICE: spelling in outlook.com when he typed emails Google Chrome

Q A

Hi Richard. I need to turn on my cookies for google chrome so that I can access my tesco bank acc. I have tried but cannot find out how to do it. Could you help please? Why is life so difficult? Many thanks Brian

Hi Brian, in order to be able to manage your Google Chrome cookies you will need to do the following... 1. Launch Google Chrome 2. Click the wrench icon (top right of the screen) 3. Select Settings 4. Click Show advanced settings 5. Click Content settings in the "Privacy" section It's this section that shows your cookie settings, in order to turn them on (which they should be by default anyway), you will need to tick "Allow local data to be set", this will enable both first-party and third-party cookies. As for the question about “life” I have no idea, I often wonder the same ;-)

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternatively why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

Q

In the 4th October issue of the Courrier you stated that "outlook.com automatically underlines mispelt wotds". It doesn't in my case as demonstrated above. What am I doing wrong? Allen

A

Hi Allen, it seems that the underlining of words in outlook.com is reliant on your web browser having a spell check facility built into it – some don’t. If you don’t already have it, try downloading and installing Google Chrome, you can get a free copy from here…

https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser …it does have a built in spell checker and your outlook.com words should start to get underlined when you use it to check your email. Regards

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO CROSS THE CHANNEL WITH YOUR CAR? Here's a quick guide to help you decide which is right for you

Channel Tunnel or ferry? It's a question countless Brits will be asking this Easter, as they plan a bank holiday weekend on the Continent with their cars, caravans or motorhomes. No wonder - with so many ways of getting there, choosing the right crossing can be bewildering. So we’ve put together a guide to the various crossing options. Here you’ll find details of all the different routes that you can use, and the relative merits and pitfalls of each, so that you can work out which one is best for you. Dover – Calais ferries This is the best-known and most popular of all the Channel ferry crossings, so it’s no surprise that there are so many operators vying for your business. It’s also the most frequent ferry crossing, with upwards of 30 crossings every day at peak times. There’s little to choose between each operator in terms of price or facilities – all use standard roll-on, roll-off ferries with a couple of restaurants, a bar, some lounges, a duty-free shop and a selection of amusements. And no matter which you choose, the crossing takes the same amount of time, so we’d recommend shopping around with each company and choosing whichever comes out cheapest and most convenient for your particular needs. Be aware, though, that while this is the quickest ferry crossing, taking a Eurotunnel train will be much faster. Folkestone – Calais train (Eurotunnel) The speed of the Eurotunnel train is the secret to its success. However, because it takes so little time, there are no lounges, restaurants or amusements on board, so you might want to bring your own food and entertainment. It’s also worth noting that the Eurotunnel service usually

costs considerably more than a ferry from Dover, even if you book well in advance. But if you want to get to France fast, for example if you’ve got a long journey ahead, this is the way to cross the Channel. Dover – Dunkerque ferry Dunkerque is the lesser-known destination from Dover, and it’s frequently the cheapest way to get across the Channel, as the Calais crossing is in higher demand. Dunkerque is about a 40-minute drive from Calais, but don’t forget that the crossing also takes around 30 minutes longer. That said, if you plan to travel to or through Belgium, Dunkerque will be the more convenient port to arrive at. This crossing is also usually served by standard roll-on, roll-off ferries, which means you’ll get restaurants, shops and other amusements. Portsmouth – Le Havre ferries There are several different ways of crossing from Portsmouth to Le Havre. The cheapest is an overnight crossing which takes nine hours, allowing passengers to get a full night’s sleep. However, you can also opt for a slightly more expensive crossing, which runs during the day on most weekdays and takes five and a half hours. Either way, you'll travel on a roll-on, roll-off ferry, with cabins available for an additional cost. There’s also the option of a shorter service, which is operated with a fast catamaran. This has fewer facilities and less space on board than a normal ferry, but it’ll get you there in three hours and 45 minutes. It is rather costly, though, especially compared with the Newhaven-Dieppe service, which is almost as fast and can cost as little as half as much.

www.fb.com/TorreviejaTrafficDepartment ITV Sticker Questions Answered An often confusing aspect for drivers in Spain is the appearance of a coloured rectangle on the windscreen of cars. That sticker corresponds to the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV for short, which displays that fact that the vehicle has passed a periodic and mandatory test of roadworthiness. There are 3 colours for the ITV sticker, and each colour means when the ITV expires, if you have a sticker coloured; Yellow (Your ITV expires in 2014), Red (Your ITV expires in 2015), Green (Your ITV expires in 2016), which then rotate once again through the three colours, so Yellow in 2017, Red in 2018, Green in 2019, etc. You can check that in your sticker, there is a small hole, which informs you the month when your ITV expires. Do I have to display the sticker in my vehicle?

Yes, of course. The sticker is placed on the windscreen of cars and is regulated by Royal Decree, which states that “vehicles that have favourably passed the periodic test shall display in a conspicuous place a distinctive, which date indicate they must pass the next inspec-

tion”. Anybody who has been for one of these inspections will known that it is much like the equivalent of the M.O.T. in the U.K., albeit with different qualifying criteria, but on passing the test the vehicle´s documents are updated, and the sticker given to be displayed on the windscreen. Where do I have to display the sticker? As for where the sticker is displayed, that too is dictated by law, and it Is mandatory to place it in the upper right cor-

www.n332.es

ner of the windscreen as you are looking out, affixed to the inside, so that the sticker can be clearly observed from the outside of the vehicle, where it will subsequently be displayed in the upper left hand side. Can I have several ITV stickers on my windscreen? A common question relating to this sticker is whether old ones have to remain as time goes by. The simple answer being that as the sticker is used to indicate the date of the next required test, then the answer has to be “NO”, only the current and valid sticker should be present. There is a fine for not displaying the sticker correctly, but simply ensuring the sticker is in the right place, and valid, can avoid a lot of undue hassle during routine vehicle checks. “The ITV sticker informs the police that your ITV is ok, so if you do not display the sticker you could be stopped to check if your vehicle has a valid certificate”.

THE TOAST OF ALDI’S WINES

Lot 02 Tasmanian Chardonnay, Australia 2013 (£9.99, Aldi) Aldi’s bid for vinous respectability, an important part of its campaign to lure still more middle-class shoppers, continues with the launch of the Lot Series, a set of “boutique wines” (their wording, not mine), each the result of a collaboration with a “leading” winemaker. Three of them go on sale this week (a fragrant, silky Argentine Malbec-Cabernet will be on sale in May, and there will be five more later in the year). The savoury oatmeal and crisp apple of the excellent Tasmanian Chardonnay was the pick of the bunch, just ahead of the piercing, incisive Lot 04 Layda Sauvignon Blanc from Chile’s Leyda Valley and the chewy sweet fruit and spice of the Lot 03 Pézenas 2013 southern French red.

Toro Loco Tempranillo, Utiel-Requena, Spain 2014 (£3.79, Aldi) Good as they are, and while I would be happy to put a bottle of any of them in the trolley the next time I’m scavenging for cheap loo roll and salami, the Lot Series wines wouldn’t on their own be enough to make me plot a trip to Aldi. If I had a tenner to spare, I’d still rather go to an indie or an Oddbins where they have an infinitely wider range at that price. What Aldi does have which the indies (and the other supermarkets for that matter) don’t, however, is a bargain basement wine of the quality of Toro Loco Tempranillo, a juicy, berry-fruited red that is astonishingly good considering tax and other costs leave only a few pence for the wine itself. The Exquisite Collection Fleurie, Beaujolais, France 2014

(£6.49, Aldi) As I tasted the rest of the slim Aldi range of 50 bottles amid the distractingly spectacular views of London at the top of Millbank Tower, it seemed to me that price remains the over-riding consideration in the retailer’s selection process. There was very little that was egregiously bad, most wines were OK or better for the money, but there was little to stir the soul. There are some real gems, however: Exquisite Collection Fleurie 2014 (£6.49) is a very pretty light Beaujolais; while the zesty limey Exquisite Collection Clare Valley Riesling 2014 and the soft strawberry-juicy Exquisite Collection New Zealand Pinot Noir 2014 (both £6.99) both pull off the Aldi trick of being much better than their prices suggest they have any right to be.

'HEALTHY' FLAVOURED WATER CONTAINS MORE SUGAR THAN COLA

The good news is we’re drinking fewer fizzy drinks. The bad news is we’re drinking sugary water instead. Figures from consumer research group Kantar Worldpanel show sales of bottled water boomed by more than 14 per cent in the year to January while sales of fizzy drinks fell by almost one per cent over the same period. But don’t raise a celebratory glass to our newfound wholesomeness. According to The Grocer magazine, drinks manufacturers facing a fizzy drinks backlash by sugar-savvy consumers have simply reinvented water by loading it with the white stuff. Coca Cola-owned brands including Innocent and This Juicy Water are leading the way. And we’re lapping it up. Supermarket sales of flavoured still water soared by 17 per cent in the year to January, while flavoured fizzy water also increased in popularity, with sales rising by 11 per cent over the same period. Incredibly, flavoured water now accounts for 30 per cent of all bottled water sales by volume – that’s 313 million litres of flavoured H20 we’re guzzling each year.

Many of these flavoured waters come in bottles that emphasise the “spring water” content, accompanied by pictures of ripe fresh fruit.

But consumers who believe they’re hydrating themselves the healthy way should read the nutrition label carefully: some flavoured waters are loaded with more sugar than fizzy drink, and others are packed with artificial sweeteners. Some

drinks contain a minuscule amount of fruit juice - if any - despite bearing images of fruit. “It's a bit insincere to call any of these drinks flavoured water,” says Katharine Jenner, Campaign Director of Action on Sugar. “Water is the main ingredient in all soft drinks, from Cola to Ribena to Vitamin Water. This is just another way for drinks makers to take advantage of customers' good intentions, and making a huge amount of money in the process. “All of these so-called flavoured waters would get a red traffic light label on the packaging – more than 13.5g sugar per portion – and all contain over half of the World Health Organisation's recommended sugar intake of about 25g per person per day.” She adds that a can of Rockstar Water or a bottle of This Juicy Water “far exceeded” the recommended allowance of sugar for a full day. She urged parents not to give the drinks to young children and advised people who preferred flavoured water to dilute the drinks further with still or sparkling water. Michael Green, founder of tapwater.org, the charity aimed at encouraging consumers to ditch bottled water in favour of H20 from the tap, says the surge in flavoured water sales was further proof that drinks manufacturers were convincing consumers to buy products they didn’t need. “Thirty percent of the bottled water we buy is tap water anyway, so basically consumers are paying for a plastic bottle and a bit of branding. Or tap water with sugar and flavouring. It’s insane.” Davin Partington, director general of the British Soft Drinks Association, said: “Flavoured waters provide consumers with the hydration benefits of water with additional flavouring. Most also contain low calorie sweeteners and sometimes fruit juice which does contain naturally occurring sugar but also essential vitamins and minerals. Soft drinks companies are taking practical steps to help consumers lead healthier lives - product reformulation to reduce calories, increasing availability of smaller pack sizes and significant investment in promotion of low and no calorie options – up by nearly 50 per cent last year alone. “Soft drinks contribute just 3 per cent of calories to the average UK diet but it’s important that people balance calorie intake and exercise and recognise the low and no calorie options available to them.”

HOW A TEST FOR MICROBES CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR TREATMENT Once upon a time, hospitals carried out a check for microorganisms to rule out their possible implication in an illness, but those days are far gone. Today doctors blindly prescribe courses of antibiotics even when they´re unnecessary, and at great risk to the patient. Microbes such as bacteria, fungus, viruses and even parasites are best known for causing infectious diseases, however these microbes also cause or worsen many other chronic diseases. Endocarditis for example, is a serious disease of the heart caused by bacteria or fungus attacking the heart valves. Doctors today practise what can be best described as ´Guess Work´ Medicine, and rely on their patient’s symptoms such as cough to prescribe antibiotics. But microbes can conceal themselves, and remain active in the body for long periods

without any noticeable symptoms, before the body starts to deteriorate. Moreover, antibiotics are mostly effective against bacteria and have no effect on other types of microbes such as viruses, fungus and parasite. Antibiotics also destroy beneficial probiotics in our gut that help the body fight off deadly microbes. Diagnostic scan reports from MedB clinic frequently show microbes of various types when patients complain of abdominal problems, skin problems or even joint pain. Papilloma virus is typically detected when patients present with skin formations, red patches, skin blisters and other skin problems. Joint problems can be caused or worsened by viruses such as cytomegalovirus and this is routinely identified when patients complain of joint pain. Diseases related to the digestive system are frequently caused by bacteria such as E. coli, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Such microbes are described as ´opportunistic´ and are usually all around us, but will invade the body when our immune system becomes depressed. When harmful microbes in the body are treated, illnesses disappear or are much improved. Without carrying out appropriate tests or scans, it is impossible to detect and appropriately treat harmful microbes. At MedB diagnostics, we use advanced computerised technology to detect a wide range of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungus, parasites and worms. To book a scan at MedB call 965 071 745 or 966 189 074.

Q

1 am a 69 year old man, and I have suffered from high blood pressure for 7 years, and have been on medications. Since this past year however, my blood pressure hasn’t been so good. My doctor changed my medication a few months ago, but it didn’t make much difference. In a way I feel it has to do with my lifestyle, and will be glad if you tell me the right diet for my problem.

A

Yes you are right in thinking that lifestyle plays an important role in maintaining a healthy blood pressure. To understand the diet that is right for you, it may be best to first consider the causes of high blood pressure (HBP). According to medical science, over 80 per cent of HBP is due to unknown factors, and the remaining 20 per cent are caused by problems originating from arteries, kidneys, adrenal glands, hormonal system, as well as from drug reactions caused by medications and toxic contaminants. The so called unknown causes of HBP are now believed by most medical researchers to be due to nutritional deficiencies, most likely of a complex nature. More importantly, researchers are finding that a group of toxic compounds known as free radicals are responsible for the degenerative changes in organs that ultimately lead to hypertension. These free radicals wreak

havoc on our organs in a process very similar to ‘rusting of iron’. To protect our cells against the destructive action of toxic free radicals, our body employs compounds known as Antioxidants. These compounds are mainly found in plant foods, but also occur naturally in the body in varied forms. Fruits and vegetables especially those coloured bluered, are rich sources of antioxidants, and include: blue berries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, pomegranates, goji berries, and the good news is that they are available from your local supermarket. But the foods with the highest amount of antioxidants are Acai fruit, and dark chocolate. Other nutrients whose deficiencies or sub deficiencies are known to trigger high blood pressure are Magnesium, vitamin C, folic acid, omega-3, and CoQ10. In addition, imbalances in blood levels of Sodium and Potassium have been strongly linked to high blood pressure. This is why certain drugs

used to treat hypertension are based on their ability to regulate sodium and potassium in the body. In any case, in my clinical experience, a deficiency of magnesium is a more common cause of high blood pressure than problems with potassium and sodium, and on many occasions I have successfully corrected long standing high blood pressure with magnesium. Vegetable foods that are rich in magnesium and potassium are: tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, peas, broccoli, spinach, artichokes, sweat potatoes, beans. Furthermore, these fruits are equally rich in magnesium and potassium; bananas, dates, oranges, orange juice, grapefruit, mangoes, peaches, pineapple, strawberries and tangerines. Oily fish are good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. However, extra caution is needed with fish, because most of it is now contaminated with mercury and radiation from the nuclear accident in Fukushima, making smaller fish a healthier alternative because they

don’t concentrate toxins in their tissues as much as the larger ones. In recent times, saturated fats and cholesterol have been demonized as the cause of high blood pressure and heart disease, and the advice to the public is to consume foods low in fat such as margarine and hydrogenated oils. What we know however is that such processed oils are broken down in the body into deadly free radicals that add to the problem of inflammation and high blood pressure. Cholesterol is also one of the most vital nutrients in the body, and is the key ingredient required for our nervous and muscular system to function effectively. It is so valuable that the liver makes 70% of all the cholesterol present in the body. This is why blocking the production of cholesterol with statin drugs puts the body under immense pressure to make more cholesterol, eventually causing the so called common side effects of statins – muscle pain and depression. Eating foods that contain wheat is probably the most important cause of high blood

pressure today. Unknown to people, the wheat consumed today is genetically different from strains of wheat consumed prior to the mid-1970s, when it was genetically modified; only back then the process was referred to as Hybridization. The wheat of today contains more of the toxic compounds that are seen in plants of the grain family such as: barley, maize, rye and of course wheat. These toxic compounds include: gluten, alpha gliadin, and wheat germ agglutinin and they cause severe inflammation of the arteries which can eventually cause high blood pressure. Wheat is also known to promote persistently high levels of insulin, and this eventually leads to high levels of triglycerides. High triglyceride levels will eventually result in abnormal or high total cholesterol levels. In summary, if you suffer from high blood pressure, your diet should be free from Wheat and wheat based foods such as bread, pasta, cakes, battered foods etc. Giving up wheat is certainly not an easy task. Your diet should also be rich in a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and these are best consumed raw. Butter should be eaten in place of margarine. Coconut oil is the best kind of oil to cook with because unlike most other oils including olive oil, it doesn’t break down when heated. Coconut oil also contains Medium chain triglycerides (MCT), an alternate brain fuel, now thought to help prevent neurodegenerative brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. MCT is also found abundantly in full milk, another reason it should be preferred to skimmed milk. You should also cut down your intake of coffee and alcohol. Most people retire to Spain and spend their days drinking every type of beverage but water. Make sure you drink at least 1.5 litres of water every day. Water is necessary for the kidney to process waste materials in the body. FOR A FULL BODY DIAGNOSTIC SCAN, CALL 965071745 OR 966189074

Horoscopes Aries March 21-April 20 With rational Mercury in Aries in the weeks to come you can at last begin to see your way ahead more clearly. The key to solving a dilemma is finding the right balance between caution and determination; do not try to swim against the tide. Time is on your side, so take a more detached approach.

Taurus April 21-May 21 You are at your most intuitive this week, so trust your judgment about someone’s feelings. With the decisive, extroverted planet, Mars, in Taurus you also have the confidence and drive to push through changes – do not let your recent doubts stand in your way. Home life is also under lucky, easygoing stars later in the week.

Gemini May 22-June 21 Your chart’s most outgoing zone is actionpacked this week – make extra time to catch up with old friends and to go out and meet new people. Your ruler, Mercury, also helps you to ease recent tensions in a close relationship midweek, so turn the page and do not misread their intentions. A more expansive and fulfilling era is beginning.

Cancer June 22-July 23 Reaching a better understanding with a friend or colleague could transform your prospects of success in months to come, so talk the situation through and be prepared to give a little ground. If you let others do the talking, you could also find out something that will put you in a very strong position. Your current goal could be in easy reach.

41

Thursday 2nd April 2015

By Pandora Leo July 24-August 23 What matters most this week is being clear about your long-term goals, so do not take on more than you can handle or let others make decisions for you. With the rational planet, Mercury, helping you to see your options in a clearer light, you can avoid potential pitfalls, so trust your judgment now. An old ambition could come into sharper focus.

Virgo August 24-September 23 From Wednesday the action planet, Mars, is due to help you make progress with a new ambition. But first you need to find out where you stand with a close friend or colleague, so do not overplay your hand or make firm decisions yet. If you tread gently, you will reach your goal much sooner. Meanwhile, let others feel they call the tune.

Libra September 24-October 23 An easy, flowing link between your ruler, Venus, and Pluto, which rules secrets and deep feelings, could help you find out something that you badly want to know this week. If you use your Libran tact, you can draw somebody out, so set the scene and trust your sense of timing. Someone from your past could also start to play a more important role.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 A friendship or close partnership could take on more importance for you now. If you work together on a current project, you can revolutionise your chances of success, so do not try to stand alone. With the Zodiac’s lovers, passionate Mars and pleasure-loving Venus, on your side from Wednesday, your private life takes centre stage later in the week.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Events this week should reassure you that you are on the right track, so do not let a minor setback slow you down. If you have faith in what you have to offer, you could also win unexpected support from someone. A conversation with a friend or loved one could boost your confidence midweek.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 An unexpected sequence of events could help dispel your lingering doubts about the way to handle certain issues that preoccupy you now. In fact, you should soon see how easy it would be to bring about important changes. With the energising Sun in tune with lucky Jupiter later in the week it seems that a close friendship could soon go from strength to strength.

Aquarius January 21 - February 19 Domestic changes that you had postponed could come high on your agenda in the weeks ahead. With diplomatic Venus on your side you can overcome resistance to your plans, so do not miss a chance to make a friend or loved one see life from your angle. The position you are in is stronger than you think.

Pisces February 20 - March 20 The changes triggered by the Sun’s eclipse in Pisces are now well under way, so streamline your routine in readiness for better times ahead. Once you get your bearings in the new terrain, you will start to see how many options you now have, so do not let existing ties or past commitments limit your horizons. A whole new future beckons.

RED & YELLOW & PINK & BLUE

This is part of a song which that goes on about a rainbow but it’s the red and the yellow part that I am interested in at the moment. Why? You may ask. Well over the years and in particular the retirement years, I have been asked the question: Why, now that we are getting older and not being able to hit the ball as far as we used to play from the red (ladies) tees? Obviously there is a lot of pride at stake, so I decided to get an official statement on this question and contact the Real Federacion Espaňola De Golf (RFEG) and this person I contacted is a committee member of EGA Handicapping & Course Rating, so he is exactly the right person to ask and provide the answer. So here is the authoritative answer to this “age old” question: For handicapping purposes, any player must play; regardless of his/her age from a tee rated according to his/her gender. So, if a club wants to organize a competition for over-70 senior players from red tees, it will be a qualifying round for men, only if the club has

their red tees rated for men. Otherwise it will be only for women. Currently the RFEG has all the tees rated for men (both blue and red). But all the ratings are not uploaded to the Servidor Central de Handicaps ( S C H ) (Central Handicap Server). If any club wants them they only need to call the RFEG Madrid office to have it. In the future all the ratings will be uploaded. BUT…a player cannot choose where to play; only the Committee in charge of the competition can. So there isn’t any regulation in the RFEG (nor EGA) where over 70 (or so) must play from a shorter set of tees. I hope that this answers the question. So it would appear that it lies with the Committee or individual who is responsible organizing the competition, so perhaps we

should carry our birth certificates in out golf bag!! VIVA EL COPA DEL RYDER! Ryder Cup Europe has made a visit to check out the Costa Brava-Barcelona bid to host the Cup in 2022. The two-day trip consisted of a tour of Barcelona and Girona, as well as the proposed future host venue, the PGA Catalunya Resort. Ryder Cup Europe were also briefed on the transport, security and accommodation plans that Costa Brava-Barcelona would, if selected, put into place to host golf’s biggest global event in seven years’ time. During their stay, Ryder Cup Europe were also briefed on the operational, commercial and legacy aspects of Spain’s bid, and had the chance to meet the bid’s most senior sponsors, including both political and business leaders. The Spanish bid enjoys support from the highest levels,

including from King Felipe VI, who has accepted the Honorary Presidency of the bid. There was scarcely a Spanish golfer whose name was not mentioned in an attempt to bring the Ryder Cup to this corner of Europe

for the second time, 25 years after Valderrama, on the Costa del Sol, hosted the Ryder Cup and the late Seve Ballesteros captained the home side to victory!

TITTER ON THE TEE A bloke was having a few drinks by himself at a London casino when he met up with a striking but quite short and slim young woman. They got on famously and ended up in bed. The next morning she told him she was a jockey and that if he came to the races at Ascot that day, she'd tip him the winner of each race she was riding in by giving him a sign as she rode out of the saddling paddock. In Race 2, she rode out, rubbing both her boobs. The bloke looked through the race book and found 'Two Abreast' on which he placed £100 at 5-1. It won by two lengths. In Race 4. she rode out rubbing her fingers round her eyes. He put the lot on 'Eyeliner' at 10-1 and was then £5000 in front. In the last race she came out standing up in the stirrups and rubbing her crotch. He backed nothing. After the races, he met up with her and thanked her for the winners in races 2 and 4. 'What about 'Itchy Mickey' in the sixth?', she asked. 'It paid a fortune’ 'Bugger', he said, 'I thought you were telling me the favourite was scratched!'

José María Olazabal, S e r g i o G a r i c a , Miguel Angel Jiménez and Seve as well as Antonio Garrido, who with Seve played in the 1 9 7 9 European Ryder Cup team, the first to admit players from o u t s i d e Britain and Ireland, were all mentioned during the the course of the two-day visit to the Costa Brava by the Ryder Cup evaluation committee. The party moved to the soccer pitch at Camp Nou, and the gathered officials enjoyed one of the most unusual moments of the

Guardiola. Gonzaga Escauriaza (pictured in action!), President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), said, “It was with great pleasure that we welcomed our good friends from The European Tour and Ryder Cup Europe to Costa Brava-Barcelona. Our bid is centred on three concepts – history, certainty and passion. No other country in mainland Europe has contributed more to European and Ryder Cup golf, and our proposed venue is one of the finest and best linked in Europe. Furthermore, our bid sponsors share a unified passion to bring one of the world’s biggest sporting events to Catalunya in 2022.” Richard Hills, the European director of the Ryder Cup, mentioned that golf is now an Olympic sport and when the Olympics were in Barcelona in 1992, it was the rebirth of the city. 2022 will be 30 years from the

visit. Various members of the visiting party took the opportunity to launch a few drives from near the corner flag, the challenge being to land the ball in the centre circle. The evaluation committee all got FC Barcelona shirts and met the side’s former manager, Pep

Olympics and 25 since the Ryder Cup in Valderrama, so there are certainly landmark dates. The European Tour is expected to announce the successful host nation this October, with bids also in from Germany, Italy, Austria and Portugal.

KNOW YOUR RULES QUESTION In a match between Alan & Les, Alan was unsure of his rights on the third hole and therefore played a second ball and holed out with both balls. After the match they referred the situation to the committee. What is the ruling? A: Alan has proceeded correctly by putting a second ball into play and the result of the hole will be determined by the decision of the committee. B: By playing a second ball in match play, Alan has played a wrong ball and would lose the hole. However, since Les did not make a timely claim, the score made with Alan's original ball counts. C: Alan should not have played a second ball in match play and therefore loses the hole, irrespective of any claim made by B

ANSWER B: By playing a second ball in match play, Alan has played a wrong ball and would lose the hole. However, since Les did not make a timely claim the score made with Alan's original ball counts - Decision 3-3/9

Also in this age category, 11 year old Amy Connolly smashed her 200m Freestyle personal best by a

massive 27 seconds (3:11:53), whilst Vilja Bilstad(pictured with Amy Connolly), aged 12, also improved her best by seven seconds (3:08:50). The boys also had some good results, as 12 year old Vitalio Veres improved on his 200m Medley event by 24 seconds (3:06:97) and was placed fourth. Four of the Club Natacion Torrevieja Masters swimmers competed against 23 clubs from around the region on Sunday, and all four came first in their age categories for each of their two events. Beth Altabas swam an outstanding 100m Backstroke (70-75yrs) improving on her previous best

by six seconds (1:48:47). The team’s newest member Santi Perez had excellent swims in his 50m Freestyle (28:77) and 50m Butterfly (33:57) in the men's 30-34yrs category. Both Paul Matthews and Vicki Connolly had good swims in their two races matching previous best times. Glorious sunny conditions greeting the sailors for last Sunday’s second SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) Spring Series race day at Los Narejos , with eight boats taking part in the two races. Changing wind speeds actually made conditions challenging , with the final results on corrected time seeing a clean sweep of the top three places by the two Sailfish 18’s and the Balaton of the Balaton Group, with the Catamaran in fourth. By the second race. the wind had increased, and they were perfect conditions for the big Catamaran and unsurprisingly she finished in the top spot. Second was the Sailfish 18 ‘Sirocco’ and third, a great performance in the trying conditions, the Laser 2000 ‘Shoestring Dos’.

LOCAL REVAMPS

Two new sporting facilities were officially opened by the Alicante Provincial Council President, Luisa Pastor last Saturday. Her first port of call was to Daya Nueva(pictured) to check out the new improved football ground which features a newlylaid artificial football pitch in addition to improved dressing rooms and drainage facilities. Nearly all of the 600 thousand euro budget came from the Provincial Council, who have also backed the swimming pool renovation at Rojales, which Pastor then visited.

POINTLESS RESULT SC REQUENA 0

Not for the first time this season, and despite a managerial change, Torrevieja struggled against a relegationhaunted side, and just could not score. Utiel along Requena are sure-fire relegation bets, but in four matches with them this season, Torry have managed a grand total of two goals and dropped valuable points. That has been repeated with virtually every other club this season in the relegation zone and has made this a season of utter frustration. After rattling in six the previous week against Acero, Torry started last Sunday’s match brightly, peppering the Requena goal with attempts from Jorge, Cesar, Carrasco and Burguillos. All were on target but readily saved by Alfredo. After surviving this onslaught, mainly through foul play, which saw two early bookings for the home side, Requena managed a cracking, swerving shot on goal from 25 yards which Oscar tipped over the bar in brilliant fash-

ion. The paltry home crowd bayed for cautions at every Torry infringement, but eventually it was only Jorge who made the notebook. Torry were beginning to get frustrated by a side they sat deep, held their formation strongly and were hard to breach. Brani, who had been spectacular last week, was finding little space to run at his opponents and was markedly ineffective. Again in the second period, Torry started with purpose and focus, threating down both flanks, were they were having most joy. Carrasco was at his creative best, foxing markers with his quicksilver thinking and resolute determination. He delivered a perfect ball to set Cesar free and with only Alfredo to beat, Cesar tried to guide it home only to see the outstretched leg of the keeper foil him. Then from the other wing, Adrian crossed the ball inch perfect which Cesar met powerfully with his head but from the

FIVE STAR MONTE

Montesinos turned in a dazzling performance, that though too late for promotion hopes, was a big boost for the club’s loyal fans who’ve witnessed inconsistency over recent weeks. The added bonus was that it was away to a side that offers a bit of needle, both on and off the pitch. With striker Vaz missing, Carlos was the lone man up front and his pace caused the home defence nightmares from the off as after only ten minutes, he had a couple of giltedged chances, as Monte led the charge. One or two fans thought that with manager Juanpe back from his trip to China, he had been giving his squad some kind of oriental aphrodisiac, such was the amount of running his players were doing! But it was the home team who took the lead in the 20th minute as a rasping free kick gave no chance for Lopez in the Monte goal, ironically being the first Benejuzar shot of the match. Monte continued to dominate in a one-sided display, but amazingly they couldn’t score in the first half, despite 13 clear

middle of the goal only eight yards out, he headed wide. No less than three times when Ferran made perfect runs through the Requena defence did the linesman wrongly raise his flag, penalising Cesar and Brani for being in offside positions (which they were) but failing to apply the laws of the game correctly, as it was Ferran most clearly in possession. This frustration was compounded as Requena found a late wind and had three glorious chances, one that was scrambled off the line with home fans claiming the ball had crossed it, and then a couple of magnificent saves from Oscar(pictured over the head of Berlanga) to maintain a clean sheet. This was two points dropped ahead of last night’s home match against Cullera, and then back to the Vicente Garcia for an encounter with Benigamin with a 5.00pm kick-off. There’ll be reports on both games next week in The Courier.

opportunities. Jaunpe made second half changes with Alberto replacing Dario and finally Monte got the break through five minutes after the interval when a penalty for hand ball was coolly converted by Carlos to level the scores. Ten minutes later, Monte went for the jugular and Fernando crossed for Angel to head in, putting the visitors ahead. M&A, Carlos and Dimitry all went close before good work on the Monte right saw Dimitry unleash a ferocious shot that was heading for the corner flag only to be deflected into the net to make it three. Young Saez came on for Dimitry and the 17 year old set up a precise pass to M&A to give Monte their 4th of the match, and Carlos put the game to bed with Monte’s fifth. This Easter Sunday, Monte have a chance to keep their good form going as they entertain Bigastro with a 4.30pm kick-off.

BOBBY WHO?

As Wayne Rooney steadily closes in to set new records of appearances and goals for both his club and his country, it’s worth pausing for a respectful moment to look at the current holder of those achievements, and for the impressive way and length of time he has held them. He is not the household name today that the man once was. I refer, of course to Sir Bobby Charlton of Manchester United and England. It is no coincidence that both Rooney and Charlton graced their trade at ‘ T h e Theatre of Dreams’,i.e mighty Old Trafford, arguably the spiritual home of English football after Wembley, a stadium that still regularly draws crowds of 75,000 every week to watch their heroes. As Rooney is a Liverpudlian, so Charlton is an adopted Mancunian, a Geordie from a famous footballing family in Ashington, Northumberland. His elder brother Jack played successfully for many years for Leeds United. But the eighteen-year-old Bobby became a ‘Busby Babe’, a supporting part of that legendary team built post-war by (Sir) Matt Busby. Charlton was on the plane that crashed in Munich killing eight of the fantastically-talented first team, already setting all sorts of records as European football began to grow in importance - their manager’s dream. While Busby was fighting for his

life in hospital it was the assistant manager Eddie Murphy who brought Charlton home and continued the young man’s development with extra training every

aftern o o n , practici n g shooting from way outside the area until the natur a l l y rightfooted Charlton became m o r e proficient and deadly with his thunderbolt left boot as the years went on. In 1966, the Charlton brothers played together for Alf Ramsey’s England team that won the World Cup. Bobby’s opening blaster against Mexico excited the nation and the United midfielder scored both goals in the 2 – 1 semi-final win over

Portugal. The all-time England goal scoring record of 49 goals was soon earned as Charlton passed Jimmy Greaves’ record in 1968. In those days, Charlton’s was always the first name on the England team sheet, just like Wayne Rooney’s is today. Another huge pers o n a l achievement for Bobby a l s o came i n 1968, as the amazi n g M a t t B u s b y had rebuilt another team which Bobby captained, becoming the first English club to win the European Cup. This fantastic side contained the genius that was George Best, together with Brian Kidd, Pat Crerand, Pat Stepney and veteran Bill Foulkes, the latter who had also survived Munich. The off-field contrast between Best and Charlton could not have been more striking. Playboy Best, fiery, difficult to manage, always in trouble with his disciplinary record, and regularly out on the town versus the model profes-

WANDERING WALKERS

Playa Flamenca's Walking Wanderers football team have just enjoyed a successful tournament in Benidorm. The club was only formed last September and is based at the Playa Flamenca sports ground. Further tournaments are on the list for the Wanderers, including a team coming over from the UK, and another visit to Benidorm. sional Charlton who went straight home after training and games. Bobby was only ever booked twice in an immaculate career of 753 matches, 106 for England. In George’s autobiographies the Irishman pulled no punches about the two not getting on off the field, but Bobby said little in reply and just got on with it. Yet once the first whistle went and the two were team mates, they played wonderful football together to entertain United followers home, abroad, and everywhere the club went with their fabulous football abilities, harnessed so effectively by Busby. Sadly it w a s

always said how supportive Bobby has been over the years at the hugely expec-

world-wide in those days. Quite simply, the legend that is Bobby Charlton has been there, done it: p l a y e d , scored wonderful goals, and won everything in the game. Yet he remains ever-modest, he

George who gave it all up at the ridiculously early age of only 27, leaving Bobby to carry on at his beloved Old Trafford – and he did. In 1974, post-playing Charlton tried his hand briefly at management at nearby Preston but that didn’t work as it doesn’t for many – no, make that most. Bobby soon became a director of his beloved Manchester United which he still is today, the TV camera usually picking him out with his wife Norma, wearing his trademark fur hat on cold winter evenings. Alex Ferguson himself has

tant and demanding Old Trafford, never once complaining about United’s performances - unlike many other strident old boys. My personal memory was in 1974 when I was on holiday in Yugoslavia and needed a doctor for my wife. The young medical man called out spoke absolutely no English, but treated her professionally and effectively prescribed medicine. When I tried to pay him, he simply shook my hand, smiled and said ‘Bobby Charlton!’ in a sort of international password fashion, such was the fame of the great man

doesn’t offer opinions, although he probably has plenty, keeping them wisely to himself. Bobby radiates the inner mental strength that comes from a tough upbringing and then surviving one of the ghastliest personal experiences that could happen to a young man, seeing so many of his close mates and colleagues killed in front of him. Somehow he coped, and went on to become one of the world’s truly great footballers of all time, and his records show it. Good luck to Wayne – but there will never be another Bobby Charlton.

LA LIGA RETURNS

The business end of the season gets going this weekend for La Liga after the international break, with leaders Barcelona entertaining Celta Vigo this Sunday night. The Catalan side is four points clear of Real Madrid with Carlo Ancelotti’s team having an apparent Sunday lunchtime home banker against struggling Granada. Elche, two points clear of the relegation zone, have three matches in just six days, starting off with their Monday night trip away to Espanyol, before entertaining Getafe next Thursday evening.

Super Saturday

Early Emirate doors open to provide the pick of the Prem as the Arsenal take on Liverpool. The Gunners are going great lately with Olivier Giroud on fire to match Man City for second place. Southampton need to go to disappointing Everton and win to keep up their ambitious European hopes in this tremendous season, but unlucky goalkeeper Fraser Forster is now out until the end of the season: deputee Kelvin Davis has a big job on to keep the mean Saints defence the tightest in the whole league. The Toffees are coming out of a sticky period, but need to convince their muttering supporters they mean business, now that the Europa league adventure is over. Has the real Man United stood up at last? Or did Louis’ lads lash Liverpool just ‘cos it comes naturally, inherent in their Mancunian DNA? Now Astonishing Villa travel to Old Trafford, that’s a big test for both clubs, debatable who needs the points more. ‘Sparky’ Mark Hughes has rightly been awarded a new contract at Stoke, whose tenth place represents respectability in one of the most competitive leagues in the world – where just staying there is an achievement, ask Leicester and Burnley. On Saturday evening at mighty Stamford Bridge the Potters take on the league leaders: Chelsea only have nine games left and will want to consolidate their bid for the title. But this is football…!

IT KANE BE DONE! e n i h s s n u g Young for England

It has taken one of our very own oldest

teams, Tottenham Hotspur to dramatically and clearly demonstrate how it can be done. What’s that then? That in the UK we have excellent local, home-grown talent latent in our domestic club set-ups, with British youth that can perform at the highest level - so why oh why do we search abroad and pay other clubs from different countries vast amounts to bring their players here when we don’t need to? Harry Kane is the real deal: - a 20-plus goals (Prem) season striker. Just to prove the young man’s credentials and blow away the doubters, Friday evening at Wembley was a ‘Cometh the Hour, cometh the man’ moment. After his first sensational season, just to ‘cap’ it all, Kane came on as sub at Wembley to score, for England in less than a minute, Roy of the Rovers style: you couldn’t make it up. But let’s pause the euphoria for a moment and think - just look at Spurs themselves. This is the club that

sold the most profitable home-grown superstar in UK football, Gareth Bale to money-no-object Real Madrid (did you see his performance and goals for Wales against Israel?). But somehow Spurs spectacularly squandered the spondulicks on such Lane laggards as Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, and now Erik Lamela is struggling to keep his place while another young own label product Ryan Mason is establishing himself at the expense of other mercenaries and now following Kane into the England team. And let’s not forget Spurs’ Andros Townsend and his England performances including Tuesday’s excellent equaliser against evergreen Italy. It seems highly significant that the current Spurs manager Mauriccio Pochettino has come from Southampton, the South Coast club whose youth policy is the envy of many of the bigger English clubs. Everyone has witnessed the emergence and success of Bale, Theo Walcott, Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Luke

Shaw and more from the Saints production line. So come on Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and all the other big spenders. Look at the Spurs ‘home’ examples and your own foreign transfer mistakes you’ve all made and get organised youth-wise – you can save yourselves a fortune! What about that wobbly Man City? Having had a nice civilised rest post-Barcelona and a chance to lick their wounds and take stock, it’s Crystal Palace who entertain their wealthy guests on Monday evening. By then we’ll all know what’s needed to maintain second place. In the Dreaded Drop Department, Burnley must really get something at home to Euro-aspirants Tottenham early on Sunday, and then later the North-East derby has serious significance for Sunderland - the Black Cats are balanced precariously one point and place above Burnley – and nervy Newcastle will not want to do their nasty neighbours any

favours. Black hats on… If Leicester get nowt at home to West Ham – it’s goodnight, Vienna. Similarly if Quaintly Pursuing Relegation get Baggied at the Hawthorns, then the Hoops are also doomed, Cap’n Mainwaring And finally – I’ve just twigged something. You know that moment just before a sub comes on in a game, when some ‘trainer’ or other football-failed nobody/oily rag coach you’ve never heard of is showing the incumbent something on his iPad – and you wonder what he’s doing? Well, it’s some kind of whizz kid get-rich-quick scheme to invest in, do-it-no-now-ladwhile-you’ve-got-pots and before retirement reels you in – there’s only a small number of TV punditry jobs to go round, you know. We all know most footballers aren’t the fizziest drinks in the dressing room fridge, and coupled with their attention span of a jumpy gnat it’s got to be the right moment to hit ‘em:- PROPS – Professionals Released Of Salaries.
