RIDDLE OF MYSTERY WOUNDING BLOODED BRIT FOUND IN TORREVIEJA ALEX TRELINSKI

A

72 year old British man was rushed to Torrevieja Hospital on Tuesday after he was found lying in a pool of blood on a street in the San Luis Urbanisation of the city. Authorities say that he had eight knife wounds and are investigating what happened, with a knife being discovered right next to him on the ground. It was unclear whether the wounds had been self-inflicted or the man had been a victim of a vicious attack. The man, identified by the initials of MHB, was spotted prostrate on the pavement on A v e n i d a Baracaldo by a city bus driver on the Torrevieja G bus route, who noticed the blood-soaked torso close to a bus stop at the junction of Calle Chiva at about 11.00am. The driver got out of his vehicle and called the emergency

services, with a SAMU ambulance team taking the injured Brit to Torrevieja Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, with initial reports stating that he was “in a serious condition.” The man suffered seven stab wounds to the left hand side of his chest and one to the abdomen, and was conscious when help arrived. The police though were unable to get any clear information on what exactly had happened and how long he been on the pavement before the driver of the hourly bus service called the authorities. The road is normally busy in an area which has a high number of British, Scandinavian, and German residents, and there was some surprise that nobody else came to help the man or report the incident before the appearance of the bus driver. The Guardia Civil are working on two theories that either the man was suffering from depression and somehow stabbed himself eight times, that he had been assaulted.

FLYING HIGH

Passenger numbers for Alicante-Elche airport are continuing to build on last year’s record figures, with record-breaking figures for March showing a four point four percent rise on the same month last year. 669 thousand travellers used the facilities at El Altet, with 560 thousand of those making international journeys, which were up by one point three per cent on March 2104. 264 thousand passengers were to and from the UK, with the Netherlands a distant second at 47 thousand. The overall figures also show a big hike in domestic travellers, with a 22 percent increase. The figures from Alicante-Elche are in stark contrast to the falling returns at San Javier Airport on the Mar Menor, not helped by the continuing uncertainty of when it will close in favour of the still unused facility at Corvera. Statistics for last month show that were 25 percent fewer users at San Javier compared to March 2014, with the first three months of this year showing an overall fall of 28 percent. There was a boost to travellers using local airports this week with news that yesterday’s latest two-day strike by French air-traffic controllers had been scrapped. Last week’s action led to a stream of UK flights using Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports being cancelled, but the controllers have warned that a four day strike from Wednesday April 29th to Saturday May 2nd, which would hit Bank Holiday travellers, could still go ahead if

negotiations do not reach a satisfactory outcome. Two new routes have been launched this week from Alicante-Elche with Easyjet running a summer season four times a week to Rome, whilst Jetairfly will operate flights twice a week to Antwerp, going to three times a week during July and August.

The regional socialist PSOE party has endorsed two current local mayors to stand again for their positions, despite them being mired in legal action. At a meeting at the Teatro Capitol in Rojales, the PSOE Presidential candidate for the Valencia Parliament, Ximo Puig, formerly introduced his party’s candidates for the Vega Baja region, including current mayors Valerio Raul Medina in Bigastro and José Manuel Butron in Los Montesinos. Puig endorsed both men and said that he only saw corruption in the rival Partido Popular. Elsewhere, the PSOE have yet to find a mayoral candidate for Benijófar, whilst in San Fulgencio, Alejandro Sampere, will lead the list, after the bid of ex-Mayor Trinidad Martinez went out of the window, after she was recently disqualified from office by an Orihuela judge for her part in the sports village building corruption scandal.

THE CAR COLLARS FAMILY WAY

Three members of the same family have been arrested on suspicion of robbing at least eight homes around the region, including properties in Alicante, Elche, and Orihuela. The Elche-based family (two men and a woman) were detained by the National Police, after an investigation that lasted several months. Jewellery and cash were the main targets, with the jewels being sold off to various gold and jewellery stores in the Elche area. Some 10 thousand euros of items were recovered by the police and handed back to their rightful owners.

A gang of car thieves has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Agost in Alicante Province. The two men and a woman are suspected of stealing vehicles across a wide area including Santa Pola, Elche, Orihuela, Murcia City, and Cartagena. Six cars and a moped were found in a yard which were going to be dismantled for parts, with Guardia officers stumbling in on the Spanish trio who were in the process of taking a vehicle to bits. Many parts had already been packaged up ready for sale.

TAPAS TIME CUTTING EDGE

17 people including four men from the Alicante and Murcia areas, have been arrested and charged with distributing child pornography via the internet. Operation Canterbury saw arrests carried out in 15 Spanish provinces, with another 12 people said to be under investigation by the Guardia Civil. The arrested people are aged between 30 and 76, with two men detained in the Murcia region, and a 70 year old in the La Nucia area and a 45 year old in El Campello, both in Alicante Province. Police have so far accessed around 20 thousand files of indecent material.

61 bars and restaurants are taking part in Torrevieja’s 12th Ruta de la Tapa which started yesterday(Thursday). The event runs until this Sunday, and then once again the following weekend from Thursday April 23rd to Sunday April 26th, with prices for a snack and drink at either two euros or two euros fifty cents.

PRAISE BE

An Algerian man who tried to set fire to a service station in Alicante City was arrested by the National Police on Sunday afternoon. The 31 year old went to the filling station on Avenida de Novelda and started shouting in Arabic before he got out a knife and slashed open a petrol pump hose. The manager rang the police who quickly arrived and surrounded the irate individual, who they then took into custody. Authorities believe that he was mentally ill rather than trying to make some kind of profound jihadist stand.

Elche's General Hospital is one of only five facilities in Spain to have new state of the art laser technology to perform sight-saving cataract operations. The ophthalmology department now has a new single Femtosecond laser in its armoury which medics say gives greater accuracy as well as cutting down on unwanted side-effects and risks. The new laser also can be used in other eye operations with up to 800 procedures expected this year.

This coming Monday(April 20th) is the deadline date for British ex-pats wanting to vote in next month's UK General Election. It's the first time that the Electoral Commission has introduced on-line registration, saying that some five million ex-pats around the world are eligible to vote but only a tiny fraction take advantage of that right. Alex Robertson, Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, said: “There is now just a matter of days left until the 20 April deadline, so we’re encouraging UK expats to join the many others who have already registered to vote online. It takes just a few minutes at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and is far easier than the old, paper based process”.

SPANISH PROTEST RETREAT STOPPED

Spain is dropping down the list of destinations that Britons are looking to emigrate to, according to a survey from Lloyds Bank. Just 52,000 Britons moved to Spain between 2009 and 2014, down from 124,000 in the previous four years. The recession and the low Euros exchange rate have been given as the main two reasons for the big changes. The USA has overtaken Spain, to go into second place with 72,000 going stateside in the same time period, with Australia leading the way with 207,000.

CORREOS CON

An E-mail scam involving malicious files allegedly sent from the Spanish Post Office, Correos, are being sent around the country. The message claims the user has a registered letter or parcel to collect, for which they need to click on a link, and if they do not do so, Correos will charge them €7.55 a day for holding it. The text contains grammatical errors, with the main clue that the message is not Correos being the fact that accented letters are replaced with an apostrophe before or after the vowel. If users click on the link, this will automatically download malware which changes all files on the infected computer to 'encrypted’, meaning they cannot be opened or read, with the hackers charging 299 euros to restore the files. The National Police are warning not to open any links unless the user is sure about where they come from.

A fresh protest over the state of the buildings at the Príncipe de España school in Rojales was stopped from going ahead on Tuesday. Valencia’s education department are said to have prevented classes being held outdoors at the start of the new school term, saying that the buildings were safe enough for lessons to be held indoors. The Valencian government last week advertised a five million euro tender for the school to be rebuilt, but parents and teachers still remain sceptical over the plans going ahead. The next protest move is likely to involve children coming to class wearing safety helmets.

NO REPRIEVE

A German man who bludgeoned his ex-partner to death in their Costa Blanca bar has had his 18 year jail sentence confirmed by the Supreme Court, after a jury found him guilty at his trial in Elche two years ago. Karl Heinz co-owned the La Corona bar with his ex-girlfriend on the Pinar de Campoverde Urbanisation in Pilar de la Horadada. Although no longer a couple, they agreed to carry on running the bar after they separated, but he beat her to death there in June 2010. Heinz had appealed to the High Court over the legality of the DNA samples obtained at the crime scene, but the bench last month said there were no irregularities over how they were obtained, with the Supreme Court now stating that the length of sentence was a correct one.

SUPERMARKET FERIA FIRST SWEEP

A terrified driver in the northern Basque region crashed his car into an Alcampo supermarket after accidentally hitting the accelerator instead of the brake. The impromptu drive-in shopper stunned customers as his Volkswagen Golf ploughed through the checkout area of the store in Oiartzun, destroying two tills. According to witnesses, while rounding a bend in the car park, the driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake sending his vehicle careering into the store front. A checkout worker received "light injuries" to a leg during the accident, but other than that no one was injured. The driver was treated for shock but had no lasting injuries.

UNSPECIAL K

A man has been jailed for three years after branding his initial onto his girlfriend's back while she slept. Lema Antonio Ricardo Sanjurjo, who went by the nickname of Kaito, "branded his girlfriend as if she were an animal", according to the judge at A Coruña's criminal court. Ricardo had been out for the evening with his girlfriend Carmen Alonso Navarrete visiting different bars then went back to his flat at 4.00 am in Cees, in the north-western region of Galicia. Alonso drank a glass of orange juice and some water, and she said that she fell asleep. It wasn't until she was showering the next afternoon that she felt a "tingly sensation" and discovered she had a burn on her lower back and that the skin was peeling off. The burn at the base of her spine was in the shape of a K - the first letter of her then boyfriend's nickname - and was exactly like a branding iron that Ricardo had once shown her to try to persuade her to allow him to mark her. A forensic doctor told the court that she had been drugged before the incident took place, so that she wouldn't wake up whilst she was being branded.

SNIFFED OUT

Guardia Civil sniffer dogs have found traces of drugs inside a helicopter which had apparently 'crashed itself' in the province of Almería nearly a fortnight ago. The chopper was discovered abandoned with no crew members, injured or otherwise. Police say they cannot determine whether the drugs, believed to be marijuana, were in the craft when it fell out of the sky and landed in the Cabo de Gata nature reserve in Níjar. The craft had no flight plan and its navigation across Andalucía's air space was not recorded anywhere, according to the Guardia Civil.

CAMPAIGN FINISHES Dolores is staging its first ever outdoor Trade Fair in the town’s Plaza del Ayuntamiento this weekend. The event has been put together by the local traders and the council and starts today (Friday) running through until Sunday night, with a variety of stalls and local entertainers.

A week-long clampdown on speeding motorists ends on Sunday. The push run by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has seen Guardia Civil Trafico officers concentrating on roads that have seen a high number of accidents, with mobile speed traps being set up. Speeding was found to be the direct cause of nearly 20% of accidents involving serious injuries or fatalities last year, the DGT says.

SMELLY PROGRESS

Pilgrims on the Way of St James pilgrimage route to the holy Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela have been asked to stop defecating outdoors in the Galician village of Lastres. The municipality has put up signs asking pilgrims to stop their unseemly acts in the vicinity as they trudge towards Santiago de Compostela cathedral, where the apostle Saint James is said to be buried. The pilgrimage route's booming popularity has led to the appearance of signs showing a red-circled and barred squatting figure. Lastres resident Antonio Fernández told the EFE news agency that the signs appeared last week but no one in the village seemed to know who had put them up. According to the Pilgrims Office in Santiago cathedral, 238,000 people followed the Way of St James in 2014, starting in various parts of Spain, France or elsewhere in Europe. A spokesman for the Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago said that the organisation had not received any specific complaints from anyone in Lastres, but did say that farmers from other points along the route had called in to say that a field of their was being used as an open-air lavatory by a large number of pilgrims.

TRIPLE TRADEGY

A teacher and two teenagers, part of a group of deaf students on a trip to Marbella from Turkey, drowned on Monday while swimming on La Venus beach. Another student aged 18 was pulled ashore in a critical condition by surfers who went to his rescue. The 30 year old male teacher drowned after rushing into the waves to help rescue the students after they got into difficulty during an afternoon dip. The victims were part of a group of around ten people, including two teachers, who were visiting the Costa del Sol resort.

Spain's anti-austerity Podemos party would win this year's General Election by a razorthin margin if it were held now, a weekend poll showed, but the new leftist party has lost some support in recent months and is running virtually neck-to-neck with the two mainstream parties. Podemos led the poll carried out by Metroscopia for El Pais newspaper for the fourth month in a row, garnering 22.1 percent support. However, the opposition PSOE regained lost ground to come second with 21.9 percent of the vote. The ruling Partido Popular would come third with 20.8 percent of the vote, whilst centre-right newcomer Ciudadanos would come fourth with 19.4 percent. A major test for all the parties comes in next month’s local and regional elections.

WALKING IT OFF

A British dad missing for 20 hours on a stag do in Barcelona has been found - after being driven to the wrong place by a taxi driver. Plymouth man Marc Carn, who was last seen on Saturday evening, walked into the British Consulate in Barcelona on Monday. His family revealed he had been walking back to Barcelona ever since a taxi driver dumped him “miles away” on Saturday night. It’s no clear how much alcohol Mr.Carn had consumed before his long journey into the unknown. His partner Emma’s sister Anna Harvey said: “He got into a taxi and the driver took him miles away from where he was staying. When he said at the end of the journey that this was not his accommodation he was chucked out of the cab and has spent the last two days walking back to Barcelona. He was stranded with no phone or money.”

FINE DINING BUT WITH LOTS OF WHINING

MY best pal Eric the dentist received an invitation to attend a local business and professional people's dinner and he asked me to be his plus-one. 'But why can't you take your missus?' I asked. 'Erica is staying at her mother's,' said Eric. 'I'm so sorry that your marriage hasn't worked out,' I said. Eric shook his head. 'Why are you such a drama queen? There's nothing wrong with my marriage. Erica is simply spending some time with her mother. She does live 150 miles away, you know, which means that they don't see that much of each other these days.' 'Yeah,' I said. 'Living 150 miles away from the motherin-law sounds like one of the three wishes granted by the genie of the lamp.' Eric shook his head again. 'Don't take this personally, my bezzie mate, but you're turning into a repulsive grumpy old sourpuss. Maybe a dinner date with good food, fine wine and decent conversation will transform you back into the still repulsive but happy lad you used to be.' I nodded. 'I guess a night away from the pub with its lousy food, watered-down booze and hopeless conversation WILL do me some good. But at the same time, all your fellow guests will be smart, dedicated professionals and business folk. Why would they want to be in the company of an old newspaper hack who is past his sell-by date?'

Eric the dentist scratched his head. 'God knows,' he answered eventually. 'But at least it should be a laugh.' Well, it turned out that our dinner date turned out to be

his dinner jacket and emptying it into my wine glass. 'It's true, mate,' I insisted. 'Remember what happened the last time I came to your house. After 20 minutes you

acquaintance named Reg who was a fellow dinner guest by virtue of his professional status as an estate agent. 'Sorry I'm late fellas. Spot

with its extensive gardens front and rear.' As Eric the dentist polished my teeth with a table napkin, Reg the estate agent finalised the following

far from a laugh. It was, in fact, a surreal nightmare. It started with our first drink. I took an appreciative sip of my glass of fine wine and Eric said: 'Now spit out.' 'Huh?' I said. Eric blushed. 'Sorry. Force of habit.' Eric,' I sighed, 'You've got to get yourself a hobby. Your mind is on dentistry 24 hours a day. It is really not healthy. 'Nonsense!' exclaimed Eric, withdrawing a vial of fluoride from the pocket of

escorted me to the front door and said you'd see me again in six months.' 'You're exaggerating,' countered Eric, tipping me back in my chair and wedging my mouth open with a folded menu. 'Knock it off, Eric!' I spluttered, spitting out bits of soggy cardboard. 'Cavity in upper five,' announced Eric. At which point someone entered the room and plonked himself down at our table. It was a mutual

of bother at home -- which, incidentally, has full central heating, integral brick garage and is close to the shops.' 'Not another one!' I gasped, spitting out the last bits of the menu. 'You've got to get a grip, Reg. You're totally caught up in your job just like Eric the dentist here.' 'Nonsense,' said Reg the estate agent. 'Incidentally, you two are invited to my Monopoly game evening tomorrow. It's at my house

night's arrangements. 'I'll pick up my spare front door key from the office and meet you both outside my property at 7.30. And please remember, fellas, there's another couple interested.' Throwing my benumbed head into my hands, I groaned: 'This has got to stop, fellas. Look, let me tell you about an uncle of mine . . .' 'Did he suffer from toothache?' interrupted Eric the dentist. 'Could he not secure a 90

ALL SIZES also stock Women’s clothing from size 8

per cent mortgage?' asked Reg the estate agent. 'Listen to me,' I said. 'This uncle of mine worked on the docks for 40 years. His sole job was to carry cotton bales from off the ships to the docks warehouse. 'He did this six days a week. It was his whole working life. And then one day he dropped dead on the wharf . . .' 'I know this one!' yelled a passing waiter. 'On his grave headstone were engraved the words "Gone but not for cotton."' 'Thanks for killing my punchline,' I said to the waiter before turning to my table mates. 'But that's my point, fellas. You cannot go through life just doing your jobs to the exclusion of everything else. You have to develop other interests like collecting stamps or going to the pub to meet your mates. 'I'm a journalist but at the end of the working day I down tools and that's it. Work is over.' 'Then why are you taking notes of this conversation?' asked the waiter as he passed our table again. 'Whoops!' I said, pushing my notebook and pen under the tablecloth. I had one final task. Nipping out of the room, I took out my mobile phone and stabbed at the buttons. 'Hello, directory inquiries,' I whispered. 'Can you get me the numbers of every household within a 150-mile radius of Manchester. I'm with a lonely dentist who desperately needs emergency marital treatment.'

FAREWELL SIESTA?

Catalonia wants to be the first Spanish region to scrap the traditional afternoon siesta and to bring its working hours into line with the rest of Europe, spelling the end for long working days and late-night dinners. The Catalan government has promised to put together a proposal to reform working hours by July, with the plan aiming to streamline working hours into something akin to a nine to five day.

Military history fans are in for a treat as Torrevieja is staging its third exhibition of military models. The 500 plus items, at the Vista Alegre Exhibition Rooms, have been put together by the Spanish Military Modelling Association and features all types of military models reflecting the Spanish Armed forces, including military vehicles, uniforms, and other memorabilia. The exhibition runs until May 1st.

The HELP Association, Vega Baja, have donated essential products including 538 litres of milk to the San Miguel Food Bank, which helps local people in need. The San Miguel Arcangel Neighbourhood Association runs the bank and has thanked HELP for their kind donation, which besides the milk, also includes 66 items of baby food and hygiene products.

A new leaflet extolling the virtues of 20 types of palm trees to be found around Elche has just been published. The Visitelche website features a chance to download copies of the leaflet in Spanish and English, as well as a special five kilometre walk that people can take around the city to enjoy the various palms. Police have arrested one of Italy's most wanted mafia crime bosses as he went to collect a money transfer on the Costa del Sol last Monday. Lucio Morrone, 53, aka ‘Spalluzzella’, was detained on a European Arrest Warrant in a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and the Italian Carabinieri. He fled Italy five years ago and had been living under an assumed name in the resort of Benalmadena. Morrone appears on a list of 100 Most Wanted Italian fugitives and was wanted for crimes related to drug trafficking and "involvement in criminal mafia activity". The arrest came just days after another Italian crime boss was arrested just a few miles along the coast in San Pedro de Alcántara. Carlo Leone, a member of the Naples’ Elia clan was involved in international drug trafficking.

HOLO PROTEST DEFINING ANGER

Activists participated in the first ever recorded hologram protest, which was staged in Madrid last Saturday. It was staged to opposed the recently passed to the Citizen Safety Law (known by opponents as the Gag Law), which comes into force on July 1st. The legislation would impose fines against protests and restrict public rallies. Organised by the group called Holograms for Freedom, ghost-like figures holding placards took aim at the imminent draconian measures, arguing that holographic people are now afforded greater freedoms than their real-life counterparts.

FAITH NO MORE

More than half of Spaniards admit that they are either "not religious" or are "convinced atheists", according to a new global study that shows the dramatic loss of faith in the traditionally Roman Catholic nation. In fact with one in five Spaniards insisting that they are "convinced atheists" Spain ranks fifth on the global list of adamant non-believers. The study by polling firm WIN/Gallup surveyed 63,398 people in 65 countries in a bid to discover global religious trends. Spain was surprising in that only 37 percent described themselves as "religious" while 35 percent said they were “not religious and 20 percent went even further and declared that they were "convinced atheists".

Roma groups in Spain are trying to scrap the Spanish dictionary definition of gypsies as 'swindlers'. With complaints lodged at the Royal Language Academy in Madrid, the Gypsy Secretariat Foundation is leading the charge, ever since Spain's most authoritative dictionary defined 'gypsy' as 'one who lies and cheats' (trapacero) in its 23rd edition, launched in November 2014. Ironically, the definition was a failed attempt to make good the previous definition, which connected gitanos with fraud and deception. The academy has defended itself saying the definition reflects actual use and is not intended to be derogatory. 750,000 people, over one and half percent of Spain's 47 million residents are of gypsy heritage.

LOCAL LOOK-IN

HOME BOOST

The Help at Home, Costa Blanca charity got a welcome boost as local entertainers gave their time to help raise nearly 600 euros at an event staged at the Sports Bar, at the Flamenca Beach Commercial Centre. Around 200 people enjoyed the show with a variety of acts providing top class entertainment, including Dan Davy, Juan Carlos, Benny Van Den Berg, Emily Hullman, and the singers of T.A.A.B.S.(pictured). The money raised helps to support people needing a little help in their own homes, some live on their own and need a friend to pop in regularly and there are those that are struggling to care for their loved one who is not well enough to cope.

A ROCKIN GOOD NIGHT

Popular local rockers, Woody & The Peckers led the fund-raising for The Alzheimers Association (AFA) in Torrevieja, with all profits from ticket sales and a raffle making over 575 euros for the charity. The event was staged at El Alto La Dolores Restaurant in Guardamar, with a grateful AFA President, Matilda Sanchez, saying that public funding is never enough to meet their needs and they desperately need money to help them in the work.

IN JOHN’S MEMORY

Over one thousand euros was raised recently for the AECC cancer charity in memory of popular line dancing teacher, John Briffa, who died in February. IN TUNE

The Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir has just completed a successful three concert tour of the Northern Costa Blanca, which has raised well over two thousand euros for the AECC Cancer Charity. The choir sang in Albir and Alfaz del Pi, and under their director, Nigel Hopkins, their performances were greeted enthusiastically by the audiences. New members are more than welcome, and you just need to come along to La Zenia Church at 11.00 on a Thursday morning or phone Nigel on 966 775 976.

CARMENS ON WITH THE SHOW GIFT

The AECC charity cancer got a cheque recently for 760 euros from Bar Carmens in the El Chaparral area of Torrevieja. The money was put together by bar owner Julie Purdy who regularly raises money for good causes, and was asked to make a donation to the AECC. The donation came from a combination of funds raised from the funeral of Tony Endacott Weir and from the Play Your Cards Right sessions at the bar. Pictured is Debbie Weedon from Maria and The Pink Ladies accepting the cheque on behalf of the AECC, along with bar staff Shirley Forest, Erica Lambourne and Michael Purdy.

The Rascals are putting on a brand new variety show next week, with all the proceeds going to local charities. Both Sides of the Pond features songs from America and Europe, and is going to be staged at the Los Montesinos Music and Culture Centre on Thursday April 23rd and Friday April 24th. The show will also be put on at Torrevieja’s Virgen del Carmen theatre on Tuesday May 26th. Tickets cost just six euros, and you get yours by calling Sue on 966 784 874. HELPING OUT

My friend, 71 year old Moira Mcleod, is doing a five kilometre walk and then a climb of a very steep hill in Quesada to raise funds for our charity www.thedogyouneed.com. Moira is terrified of heights, so this is an amazing gesture from this lady, in order to raise money for our valuable work. She’s been training three days each week with a personal trainer for some fifteen months to get herself ready and I am honoured to know such a dedicated lady. If you would be so kind as to sponsor her, you can get in touch with Moira via Facebook, or by sending an e-mail to imhypnotherapy@hotmail.c om. Please can you give this amazing lady all of the support she deserves? Moira, along with her husband, Irving, are big supporters of the rescue work we are doing here in Spain. The dedication Moira has showed to pull this task off is simply outstanding. Before she started her training, Moira would have trouble walking to the end of the

road, but she now looks fitter, healthier and has an amazing sparkle in her eyes, that she did not have

way, with kennel one finished two weeks ago and kennel two will be finished by this weekend. After this,

Moira in training before. Thank you Moira for these amazing efforts and you are an inspiration to us all. Building works on our kennels are now well under

there is kennel three to complete, along with water tanks and additional fencing. The seven dogs we rescued from killing stations two weeks ago, are very much

enjoying their freedom in the very large and state of the art kennel one. To see them just relax and bathe in the sun is a wonderful spectacle, after the horrors they have been through. When the final two kennels are completed, we will rescue more dogs who are due to be put to sleep and seeing the appreciation in their eyes when they arrive, is something that would put a tear in your eye. If any reader is looking to rescue a dog, please remember our charity, as we now have many beautiful dogs who are looking for loving forever homes. I posted an article about one of the dogs we are trying to find a forever home for. Her name is Annie and her story was viewed by over eight thousand people and I still can’t believe that with all that publicity, it resulted in not one enquiry for this beautiful and special girl. On a final note, I would like to pay my condolences to the family of a lovely man who passed away, John

Garlick, aged 79 years of age, who lived in San Fulgencio. John was a big animal lover, who supported our charity, to which we will be eternally grateful. Rest in peace dear John.

ALL HAIL TO JUDGE OF REASON

British officialdom has become totally obsessed! The slightest whiff of a paedophile ring or a gang of immigrants grooming teenage girls for sex has got them falling over each other to investigate. So far, so good. But when it comes to the police and the Crown Prosecution Service ruining a teenage boy´s life, a top judge has seen red - and she has my wholehearted support. Just ponder a moment to what you were like at 17. My guess is that you had a boy or girlfriend, sat for hours in park, bus or seafront shelters for a kiss, cuddle and hopefully, a little bit more(Oh for those days back!!!). So, a 17 year old lad had consensual sex with a girl who was a few weeks off her 16th birthday, after they got drunk at a "peace festival". Police threw the book at the lad, charging him with rape. He was cleared of that grave charge after his plea of guilty to an alternative offence of sexual activity with a child was accepted by the prosecution (That was good of them, wasn´t it?). Thankfully, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano has more than an average dose of common sense and questioned why the CPS had brought the lad to court. She said: “I don't know what the world has come to when I am asked to deal with two teenagers who got drunk and had sex.” As a measure of her contempt for such a prosecution she gave the lad a one-month conditional discharge and ordered him to register as a sex offender for just two weeks. She added "So, what I'm dealing with is consensual sex between two teenagers. I have to deal with this on the basis that a 17-year-old had sex with a girl who was almost 16, and they had both too much to drink. What are we doing here? But still the prosecution wanted to press

on. I don't know what the world has come to when I am asked to deal, in a serious

criminal court, with two teenagers who got drunk and had sex. If it had been rape, that would have been a different matter. I feel extremely sorry for you having to end up in this position.” The sensible judge continue to unload: - “Clearly this started as a very serious case, but what it comes to is simply a teenage incident which should never have come near the courts at all. These sort of cases have no place in this kind of court. I want you to go away with that ringing in your ears and for it not to cast a shadow over the rest of your teenage years. You have been through a great deal as a result of this. I hope you can now put it behind you. I don't think this matter should be here at all." HHJ Sylvia de Bertodano is no legal junior. She has handled war crimes trials in

The Hague. She is now the Principal Legal Advisor to the Director of Public Prosecutions. I hope she rips to pieces the prat copper and the prat lawyer in the CPS who went ahead with the prosecution which could have easily ruined a young lad´s life. Ex-pats - are you are missing Britain? Perhaps those pleasant green fields and spring flowers? One thing that you most certainly are better off without are the everincreasing speed cameras in the UK, and now it´s a whole lot worse because of "stealth cameras" on motorways. The problem is that with the ever-increasing population and more vehicles on the road, the government and police have to come up with more imaginative ways of managing it to prevent total gridlock. And one way is to introduce variable speed limits, adjustable to coincide with the volume of traffic on the road. And along with the speed limits has come another excuse for more speed cameras. And now there´s news that traffic police have fined 25 percent more drivers on motorways in the last 12 months through the use of these unmarked "stealth cameras". The government did promise an end to hidden cameras and every one of them would be properly marked and visible. But sadly, for every good intention there´s always someone who wants to get round the system - and here´s a perfect example - cameras which motorists cannot see on

these new stretches of motorways controlled by variable speed limits. The number of drivers caught out by the 'grey cameras' have soared, with 112 thousand drivers given penalty notices or sent to court for offences on the motorway in the last year. Again, I ask, what is the intention ? Is it to make money out of motorists for the Treasury, or to visibly display every speed camera so that there´s a constant warning to cut speed down? I think their purpose is the former. How mad is this? You have a five-year-old and you´re planning a birthday party. A cake, a few party games, perhaps playing statues or pin the tail on the donkey, a present bag for all the other children to take home, plus a balloon or two. That would do wouldn´t it? Not a bit of it. Now kids (or is it the parents trying to outdo the Joneses?) want the world. How about "a bringing the outside in" themed party, which involves installing an indoor lawn complete with trees, flowers, swings and slides? Or how about setting up a complete ice rink in your back garden? Or if that´s old hat? How about an actress-led drama party; a pizza-making session in a restaurant kitchen; a T-shirt printing workshop; or even a theme park hotel sleepover? Your five year old might enjoy a Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland theme, including fairground rides and entertainers. Guests were invited to "walk the plank" at a party with Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland themes. Don´t forget that at these parties, the tiny-tot guests will be looking for Tiffany necklaces and unimaginably highlypriced gifts. It´s got totally out of control, with parents trying to outdo each-other - even parents of one-year-olds are having lavish parties, obviously to outdo each-other. Crazy or what? Insurer LV's

latest annual survey of the cost of raising a child in the UK from birth until 21 put the total at £229,951, with its "other" category - which includes birthday and Christmas presents, as well as driving lessons - increasing by 60.2% between 2003 and 2015. On average, parents spend £135 on their child's party, with one-in-six parents admitting to splashing out over £300, according to parenting website Netmums. The most expensive, like setting up your own ice rink or hiring Disney characters can cost up to £70,000. Given that there are nearly eight million families with dependent kids in the UK, the party market could be worth nearly £1.1bn. It´s all utter madness, yet more nonsense which originally came from the US. Time to call a halt methinks. Parents should understand that not putting on a lavish party does not make you a bad parent - perhaps the opposite. Here´s something that is extremely worrying. For many years we have been told that life expectancy has been rising. We know that on average, women live longer than men and live expectancy has gone from the 70s to the 80s and in recent years people have on average have been living even longer. The number of centenarians have risen year on year. But it seems life expectancy among women is now in decline - thanks to their unhealthy lifestyles. In 2013, a woman aged 75 could expect to live another 13 years and five weeks - five week less than in 2011. Life expectancy for every age group over 65 has now dropped by a few months. And life expectancy for men has stalled, while life expectancy for British women is the worst in the western world. The cause is the ten-

dency to drink far more than in the past, a more sedentary lifestyle and also poorer social care, brought about because of the recession. And this presses the warning button for politicians arguing that there should be cuts in welfare because of the need to balance the books. The more there are cuts, the greater the risks that life expectancy for people will be reduced. During Easter we were attending charity events and watched people as they sat for hours doing very little other than drink glass after glass of wine or beer, with the occasional meal of some unhealthy food, like burgers and chips. Health experts say increasingly women are adopting lifestyles more like men - drinking more alcohol, eating more and smoking, and doing very little exercise. The charity Age UK, said: 'This decrease in life expectancy, after many years of improvement, is like the canary in the coal mine. It is telling us that something has changed for the worse, so that fewer people are thriving in later life than they could or should. The charity added that the most likely culprit is the rapid decline of statefunded social care in recent years, which is leaving hundreds of thousands of older people to struggle on alone at home without any help. A charity spokesperson said: - "More and more older people are living with several incurable conditions and illnesses. Determined action now to sustain social care and to support older people with multiple long-term health conditions more effectively can hopefully make this a blip, rather than the start of a terrible trend." It seems then that the same message should be given to ex-pats in Spain: - drink and eat less, don´t smoke and exercise more if you want long retirement with a quality life.

KEEP AN OPEN MIND

Last week I wrote about the police service and how I believe it is easy to sit behind a keyboard and write about a whole group of people without thinking of who is actually reading the words. Some people like to be controversial, as it´s always good to get people talking and have a friendly discussion, but when the comments become general rather than specific, this is when I think the problem begins. I wrote last week that yes, there are bad police officers. I guess around nought point one percent of the people in uniform are doing it for a reason other than to help people and uphold the law, however that still leaves a huge amount of those wearing dark blue that are doing it with no regard for their own wellbeing and safety and for the good of the man and woman in the street. This week I’m writing about airplane pilots, in the light of the recent tragedy over the French Alps. The suicidal pilot who killed himself and at the same time massacred 149

other people was an exception and this we should never forget. I was actually quite relieved when I heard the actual reason for the tragedy, as had it been a technical fault or some other problem it would have made me more nervous to fly. Maybe I should not admit it, but I am more relaxed knowing why Germanwings flight 4U9525 crashed into the Alps. This is because it gives me the sure and certain belief that 99.9 percent of pilots are good and honest people who are doing a difficult job which has just been made even more difficult by the actions of one crazy, ill man. I am flying to the UK in July with my son to visit family and I will, once again be bringing my daughters back with me. I have no fear to step onto the plane and I will be relaxed as I sit with all my children by my side looking forward to the fortnight of fun ahead. I think it´s easy to forget, as we are sitting comfortably behind a computer screen, that most people in this world are inherently

good, and that evil does not manifest itself in many forms. There were mistakes made

person to blame in the terrible calamity that occurred one cool Tuesday morning is

with Andreas Lubitz, but I am sure that not one of the doctors who examined him and signed him off, believed that he would actually fly. The girlfriend that he opened up to was probably thinking he was spouting the rantings of an attention seeker. The only

the man who locked the cabin door and set the plane on it´s heart-breaking final descent. To throw the blame in the direction of others is an easy option. Yes, as potential passengers we should all be asking questions, and maybe changes need to be

made. Yet, all this shows however is that the system needs to be looked at and maybe altered, and not that someone somewhere made a mistake. I feel passionately about not blaming people for the actions of others, as to me it is the lazy way out. Instead of saying all police are corrupt and liars or the doctors should have reported it, we need to be saying why and how? Why was Lubitz allowed to fly and what can be done to ensure it never happens again? What can we do with the nought point one percent of police officers who are unscrupulous? Writing about life, is what we as journalists and columnists do and we have to maintain that responsibility as we tap away on our keyboards. There are maybe two groups of people however that I do lump together in the same pot of crookedness, and those are bankers and politicians. With these groups, I fear the nought point one percent may be the good ones, but I would be very

happy to meet anyone from one of these occupations and see if they can change my mind! I hope all of you keep an open mind as you flick through the pages of any newspaper that you may come across. Remember that you have an opinion and if you agree or should you not be in accordance with something you have read, feel free to write to the editor. In my opinion these articles should be conversation starters and lead to an exchange of ideas and start people thinking, although I am aware most of you read them as light entertainment and a way to pass time which is great too! We are all part of the same world at the end of the day and if we all live in peace, then we will see the happiness that this great planet has to offer. There will always be horror and wickedness but we have to keep it in context and not be drawn along by sensationalism and scandal. Have a great week and I will see you next time!

Spanish 168 ¡Hola! Welcome back to learning and improving your Spanish. We all know that it takes hard work and lots of practise to become an accomplished Spanish reader and speaker but I can assure you that it is all worth it in the end. Where do you start when you are learning a foreign language? The answer to that and how to carry on depends on you yourself. I can give you tips and advice but at the end of the day you know what works for you, try different techniques and see which ones help you remember, because for most of us that´s the hardest part. One of my regular readers, Joyce, e-mailed me with a question and also wanted to pass on her way of learning in case any of you are looking for alternative ways to store information. She told me that she keeps all her lessons in various folders but rather than keeping them in date order or verbs, adjectives, etc. she uses the headline of what the lesson is about and files them under the appropriate letter, for example she told me that The Personal ´A´ is filed under the letter P and Christmas is under C, that way she goes straight to what she is looking for, and can tell me that the Personal A is lesson 99 and Christmas is lesson 102. Whatever system you use it is important to have one, rather than stumble blindly through the language you need to have a direction and having an ordered set of notes also helps you with revision, a vital part of learning. Something that my Spanish students always find really difficult to master in English is our phrasal verbs, and it´s no different when it comes to Spanish except that in some cases where we have a phrasal verb in English the translation is just a verb, for example in English we say get up which is Spanish is levantarse, we also say turn off which in Spanish

is apagar. However there are some phrasal verbs in Spanish of course and these are what we are going to cover today. We are going to start with agree with - estar de acuerdo "All women are bad drivers." "I don't agree with you." – todas las mujeres son malas conductoras – no estoy de acuerdo contigo: be about to - estar a punto de - I was about to leave the house when my friends arrived. Estuve de punto salir de casa cuando llegaron mis amigos. Be up - estar levantado "Phil isn't up yet: he's still in bed." – Phil no está levantado aún, ya está en cama. Call back - volver a llamar - "I'm afraid the manager isn't here at the moment. Could you call back later?” Me temo que el gerente no está aquí en este momen-

to, ¿podrías volver a llamar más tarde? Carry on seguir. continuar - I'm sorry if I interrupted you. Please carry on. Lo siento si te interrumpí. Por favor continua. Carry out – llevar a cabo - The President carried out his promise to reduce taxation. El Presidente llevó a cabo su promesa de reducir los impuestos. Clear up - poner en orden - It took four hours to clear up after the party. Se tomó cuatro horas para poner orden después de la fiesta. Come across - encontrar, dar con - I came across an old friend on the metro in Madrid. Me encontré con un viejo amigo en el metro de Madrid. Come back - regresar - I'm going to England for two weeks. I'm coming back on the fifth. Voy dos semanas a Inglaterra. Yo regreso el día 5. Come in – entrar, pasar - "Good morning. Come in and sit down." Buenas días. entra y siéntate. Come on - ¡Vamos!, - Come on. We're going to be late. ¡Vamos! Que llegamos tarde Hurry up - ¡Date prisa! Hurry up! we´re going to be late ¡Date prisa! Que vamos a llegar tarde. Get off – bajar (de tren, autobus) - You have to get off the bus at the next stop if you want to go to the station – tienes que bajar del autobús en la próxima parada si quieres ir a la estación. Get on – subir (a un autobús, tren, moto) – we are going to get on the next bus, vamos a subir en el próximo autobús; Give back – devolver – if you don´t like the jeans, the shop will give you back your money, si no le gusta los vaqueros, la tienda le devolverá su dinero. Give up (hope, etc) – perder la esperanza, rendirse – if you find Spanish difficult, do not give up, si encuentras el español difícil, no pierdas la esperanza / no te rindas, give up (something) – dejar (de fumar, beber) - I want to give up smoking, quiero dejar de fumar. Go ahead - ¡siga! – can I use your pen? Yes, go ahead, puedo usar el bolígrafo, sí ¡siga! That´s enough for this week, next week I´ll give you some more phrasal verbs. Have a great week and keep practising!

The Mekong River with Sue Perkins 20:00 - BBC TWO

The comedienne continues her journey up the Southeast Asian river and reaches Laos, where she meets a fisherman who has taken advantage of the increasing number of tourists by setting up a restaurant on the beach. Sue then heads to Luang Prabang, a town that is now a Unesco world heritage site and famed as the centre of Buddhism, where she spends a day with novice monks. She also visits the Xayaburi hydroelectric dam, which will completely block the flow of the river, bringing economic benefits to Laos and beyond, but harming the livelihoods of tens of millions of people downstream.

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Doug was having issues opening up .pdf files ADVICE: : Douglas was having problems playing DVD’s from emails

Q

Hi Richard, sorry to worry you again, but can you advise me how to reinstate my settings, so that I can download attachments to any email sent to me. This was OK a couple of days ago, but I now find that when I click on the pdf attachment to any email sent to me, nothing happens!!!! Please advise, as I have some important documents to download, but am unable to do so!!! Thanks, Doug

A

Hi Doug, you should be able to do this by downloading and installed Adobe PDF Reader, you can get a copy of it free from https://get.adobe.com/reader - remember to untick any “optional offer” items that you don’t want to be installed at the same time..

ADVICE: Sheila wanted to know how to import her photos from her camera into Windows

Q A

Hi Richard, how do I get pictures from my camera onto the computer? I used to have the instructions but they seem to have vanished. I have the lead from the camera to the computer but after that I haven't a clue. Sheila

HHi Richard, I read your columns, in the Courier with great interest, & have solved many of my problems. However, I have Windows 8.1 on my "ADVENT Monza T100 Red" lap top, & I have a problem: my disc drive plays a CD OK, but does not play a DVD. Can you advise how to set up this drive to play DVD's, as well? I would very much appreciate your help. Regards Doug

Q A

Hi Doug, what happens when you try to play DVD's in your laptop?

Update

A

Nothing happens, it shows the DVD title, but it does not play. I have gone to auto play, but still no response.

Hi Douglas, it sounds to me like you simply don’t have the software installed to play your DVD’s – Windows Media Player will do this for you, or you can download some free software to play them, I recommend http://www.videolan.org as a good alterna-

tive. Hi Richard, Many thanks for the link, to VLC Player. This works excellently. Thank you once again.

Hi Sheila, here is a link to a page that should help you… http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/get-pictures-cameracomputer#1TC=windows-7

WHY TRAVEL SICKNESS COULD PUT THE BRAKES ON DRIVERLESS CARS

Age-old problem of travel sickness threatens the hoped-for benefits of letting a computer take the wheel in autonomous cars Human frailty could put the brakes on the hi-tech world of driverless cars, with travel sickness expected to be a major problem in automated vehicles. A new study from the University of Michigan predicts a 27.8pc rise in the number of people suffering from nausea, dizziness and vomiting when travelling in vehicles in which computers do the driving. Rather than ushering in a new era of motoring, autonomous vehicles could rekindle childhood memories of long car journeys punctuated by queasiness and emergency roadside stops. The study indicates that one of the major expected benefits of driverless cars – their ability to free up time spent controlling a vehicle – might not be a given. The study by Dr Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle at the US university’s transportation research institute said that motion sickness – or kinetosis – most often occurs when the

brain gets different indications from the eyes and the balance system.

Being unable to anticipate or control the direction of movement also causes the symptoms. The chance of this happening is reduced when a driver has control of their vehicle, but the “hands off, feet off” nature of automated cars raises the chance of travel sickness. The researchers found that while almost a quarter of Britons said they would not travel in a car driven by a computer, of those who would, 57pc said they would spend the time travelling watching the road even though they weren’t in control. Almost 10pc said they would read, while almost the same amount would use the time to sleep, 7pc would talk or text,

and the remainder would use the time for activities including watching TV, playing games or working. However, the researchers found that unless an automated car’s occupants kept their eyes on the road, except for sleeping almost any of the activities they were likely to do in a driverless car would mean they were more at risk from travel sickness. “By switching from driver to passenger, by definition, one gives up control over the direction of motion, and there are no remedies for this,” the study’s authors warn. However, they say that car designers of the future could reduce the chances of motion sickness through design features such as larger windows so passengers have better allround views and seats that face forwards or recline, as people lying down are less likely to be affected. For those determined to risk kinetosis by working on a computer or watching TV while on the move, the researchers say there are other options. They suggest that using visual stimulus and technology to “move” screens to imitate the actions of the car as it accelerates, brakes and turns could reduce the chance of inducing motion sickness. Overcoming the challenges that driverless cars present to the human body could be a key task for the car industry if automated vehicles are to deliver the hoped-for benefits to society. A recent KPMG report on the technology’s impact suggested driverless cars could deliver a £51bn-a-year boost to the UK economy by 2030, with £20bn of this coming from allowing people to use their time in cars more efficiently.

speed limit on conventional roads also reducing, with the limit depending on the characteristics of the actual road. As speed is a factor in so many road incidents, it is hoped that the reduction will make the roads a lot safer, although much of that relies on the driver adhering to the

Once the law passes its final stage it will be published in the official gazette, entering into force three months later. Therefore, it is expected that at some point in the summer some of the roads identified as being appropriate for the new limit will be converted, when the law finally comes into force, but the DGT has said that there are just 1,500 kilometres of motorway which is actually eligible for the increase, the equivalent of

tions, and so variable signs will be used in some sections to indicate the limit increase. In fact, for this reason, there will be no change to the fixed signs on the motorway network, where, in the vast majority of cases, the limit will still be 120 kilometres per hour, unless the road signs say otherwise. At the same time, we must also be aware that the maximum speed limit on other roads will actually decrease, with the standard maximum

rules and actually slowing down. In a recent survey of Spanish road users, 80% were in favour of the increased limit on motorways, but only around 50% were in favour of the reduction in limits on conventional roads, despite the knowledge that these roads are the location of the majority of speed related crashed and fatalities, and so we should remember that speed limits are a maximum and should not be considered a target.

A SPANISH FEAST IN SPRINGTIME Spring in Spain is a season of abundance: juicy artichokes, fresh green peas, wonderfully robust asparagus and, of course, bright, leafy spinach – a staple in many Spanish dishes. My mum used to whip up a fresh mayonesa to go with our artichokes and we would all sit round the table in silence as we tucked in, engrossed in our ritual of pulling off leaf after leaf to dunk in the creamy dip. And after the green, comes fish. Whole baked turbot is extravagant, but it’s a perfect dish with which to gather friends round the table for a feast.

WHOLE BAKED TURBOT WITH ONIONS, LEMON AND CAPER SALSA All recipes serve 6 turbot 1 x 2kg or 2 x 1kg, trimmed and gutted by your fishmonger olive oil a good drizzle

For the salsa: sweet onion 1 lemon juice of 1 capers 2 tbsp, drained and rinsed parsley a handful, finely chopped lemon thyme 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 4-5 tbsp Heat the oven to 200C. Place the turbot(s) in a large roasting tin and drizzle with oil. Season well and roast for 20 minutes for a 1kg turbot or 30-35 minutes for a 2kg turbot, until just cooked. Insert a knife into the thickest part of the meat near the bones and if it comes away from the bones easily it is cooked. To make the salsa, very finely slice the sweet onion and place in a bowl with the lemon juice, capers, herbs and olive oil. Season to taste.

Once the turbot is cooked, you can either pop it under the grill to crisp the skin or remove the skin. ARTICHOKES AND BROAD BEAN ESTOFADO WITH JAMÓN IBÉRICO AND MINT baby artichokes 12 lemon 1 olive oil 100ml banana shallots 2 garlic 3 cloves broad beans 400g, fresh jamón ibérico 100g mint 2 tbsp, fresh, chopped Trim the baby artichokes, removing any tough outer leaves, and cut in half. Place in a bowl of water and squeeze in the juice of half the lemon. Heat a little of the oil in a deep frying pan. Finely slice and fry the shallots until softened then add the garlic and fry for a little longer. Drain the artichokes and add to the pan with the broad beans. Season well and add the rest of the olive oil, the juice of the other half a lemon and just enough water to cover. Put on a lid and simmer for 20 minutes until tender. Remove the lid. Finely slice the jamón and stir through with the mint. Serve warm. SPRING LEAVES WITH CURD CHEESE full-fat milk 1 litre cloves 3

black peppercorns 10 lemons juice of 1 or 2 baby salad leaves extra-virgin olive oil to drizzle squeeze of lemon juice To make the cheese, heat the milk with the cloves, peppercorns and a pinch of salt in a saucepan over a medium heat. When it starts to bubble, around 98C, remove from the heat. Don’t let it boil. Add the juice of one lemon and stir. Stand for 10 minutes until the curds have separated from the whey. If you need to you can add a little more lemon juice, a tablespoon at a time. Line a colander with muslin, add the curds and whey and strain into a bowl. Leave for 30 minutes, squeezing gently to remove most of the liquid from the cheese. Leave to cool then scoop into a container and chill until needed. Toss the salad leaves with the olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice and crumble the cheese all over. Season with sea salt and pepper and serve.

WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE USING LAUGHING GAS? Liverpool footballer Raheem Sterling found himself on the front pages of the tabloids this week after he was pictured inhaling what seems to be nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas. The move was branded “highly irresponsible” by substance abuse charities, but 20-year old Sterling is far from alone when it comes to having inhaled the legally-available gas. According to Home Office figures, 470,000 people aged 16-59 inhaled the drug over 2013/14, up around 100,000 from the previous year. Almost eight per cent of young people said they had tried the substance, making it the second most

popular recreational drug after cannabis. The gas has been taken recreationally for hundreds of years – there are records of medical students enjoying it in the 1800s, w h i l e Coleridge said it gave him a “highly pleasurable sensation of warmth” – but has recently seen a spike in popularity, with even Prince Harry being caught inhaling it. N i t r o u s oxide, which is used commercially in whipped cream dispensers, is cheaply and readily available at music festivals and outside certain clubs. Balloons full of the gas, which produce a dizzying high of around a minute when inhaled, can be legally bought by anyone over 18 for as little as two pounds. “Laughing gas has become much more visible

in recent years,” says Dr Adam Winstock, an addictions specialist who founded the annual Global Drugs Survey. “It’s the same as what happened with magic

Winstock points out that there are a number of dangers associated. “In a big enough dose it becomes a dissociative anaesthetic – like ketamine

mushrooms – someone realised they could start making money off it and started commercialising it. “The publicity around it has made people more aware; it’s become ubiquitous.” And while a number of experts have suggested nitrous oxide is “one of the least risky” drugs, Dr

– and it makes you less aware of pain and your environment. “On a basic level, there’s a risk that you can collapse and injure yourself, and combined with alcohol there’s an increased risk of accidental harm. “It also inactivates B12, so if you’re taking this regularly it means you can become

B12 deficient, leading to nerve damage, numbness and tingling – not just after taking the drug but all the time. “If you notice any tingling around your mouth or fingers you need to stop doing this straight away and see your GP.” In extreme cases, abuse of the drug can even lead to death. A 2012 report linked a total of 52 deaths over 30 years to the drug the cause of death usually being asphyxiation, where the gas had been inhaled in an enclosed space to intensify its effects. And in 2013, 17-year-old Joe Benett suffered a heart attack and died after inhaling what he thought was nitrous oxide at a party, but which later turned out to be a cocktail of other gasses,

including butane. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has called on the Government to work with retailers to cut abuse of the substance, but Dr Winstock thinks it is unlikely that nitrous oxide will be reclassified – as a number of previously legal highs have been in recent years. “This is something that’s used routinely and widely in medical practice around the world,” he says. “I would imagine the Government will bring in legislation which limits where it can be sold, making it harder to find outside clubs, on the streets and in festivals.” The most recent Global Drugs Survey found that 24 per cent of young people who took the drug reported feeling confused afterwards, 27 per cent hallucinated and one in five were worried about the effects on their physical and mental health. Just over two per cent – the heaviest users - reported the numbness and tingling associated with B12 deficiency.

Q

I have pain in my shoulders and knees and my doctor has prescribed pain killers, but they are not helping me very much. My friend advised me to take glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate which I did, but I’m still in pain. I will appreciate your help.

A

We see a lot of joint problems at our clinic MedB, and from the diagnostic scans that we perform, we are able to identify the likely causes of the joint pain. It is true that a lot of joint pain is caused by inflammation of the joints; however a scan helps us determine the triggers for this inflammation. Viruses are frequently implicated in joint pains. Even when a joint pain could have been caused by wear and tear or osteoarthritis, viruses or other microbes will typically worsen the joint pain. Arthritis can also be caused by poor diet. Eating foods that promote inflammation in the body will worsen joint pain as well

as other inflammatory diseases. Processed foods and processed oils are some of the foods that contribute to inflammation in the joints. Joint pains can also become unbearable due to an increased sensitivity to pain. This increased sensitivity to pain is typically seen in women and is usually caused by hormonal imbalances. When the hormonal system is out of balance, this can cause an increase in the production of a chemical called Substance P, which increases our sensitivity to pain. Such heightened pain sensation is common in people suffering from fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. The commonest cause of joint pain especially in the Costablanca

area is the wear and tear of joints or arthritis due to advancing ageing. And the reason most people suffer from this problem is due to a deficiency of a natural mineral found in the body called MSM (methyl sulphonyl methane). The body uses MSM to produce collagen. Collagen is the protein required to maintain our bones, joints, hair and skin and rather than calcium, it is the deficiency of collagen that is the cause of many of the joint and bone problems we see today, including osteoporosis, low bone density as well as arthritis in the joints. Of course the bones need other nutrients to remain healthy and strong, however MSM is very severely deficient in many people because it is

hardly available from our diet. MSM is found abundantly in many vegetables, however, it’s a delicate mineral and easily destroyed when vegetables are washed, and completely destroyed when food is cooked. This makes it impossible for us to get enough in our diet. Without MSM, your body is unable to produce collagen needed to maintain your joints, and bones. Some people who are aware of collagen, take collagen supplements for their joints, however this is a wrong approach because collagen is a protein that is digested in the stomach with very little of it finally able to get to the joints. MSM is far more effective as a pain killer than most pain killers.

MSM also has very powerful antiinflammatory properties especially on the nerves, and experts believe this property gives MSM its powerful painkilling effect. But most importantly, MSM helps the body produce collagen which is needed to regenerate damaged joints. MSM is best taken in large amount, and this makes MSM powder a better way to take the supplement. The normal dose is about 2.5-5 grams daily but some people can need as much as 8 grams of MSM daily for their joints. Special plant based MSM is available from MedB diagnostic at 500 grams for 35 Euros. Call 966189074 or 966189074

HOW A TEST FOR MICROBES CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR TREATMENT

Once upon a time, hospitals carried out a check for microorganisms to rule out their possible implication in an illness, but those days are far gone. Today doctors blindly prescribe courses of antibiotics even when they´re unnecessary, and at great risk to the patient. Microbes such as bacteria, fungus, viruses and even parasites are best known for causing infectious diseases, however these microbes also cause or worsen many other chronic diseases. Endocarditis for example, is a serious disease of the heart caused by bacteria or fungus attacking the heart valves. Doctors today practise what can be best described as ´Guess Work´ Medicine, and rely on their patient’s symptoms such as cough to prescribe antibiotics. But microbes can conceal themselves, and remain active in the

body for long periods without any noticeable symptoms, before the body starts to deteriorate. Moreover, antibiotics are mostly effective against bacteria and have no effect on other types of microbes such as viruses, fungus and parasite. Antibiotics also destroy beneficial probiotics in our gut that help the body fight off deadly microbes. Diagnostic scan reports from MedB clinic frequently show microbes of various types when patients complain of abdominal problems, skin problems or even joint pain. Papilloma virus is typically detected when patients present with skin formations, red patches, skin blisters and other skin problems. Joint problems can be caused or worsened by viruses such as cytomegalovirus and this is routinely identified when patients complain of joint pain.

Diseases related to the digestive system are frequently caused by bacteria such as E. coli, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Such microbes are described as ´opportunistic´ and are usually all around us, but will invade the body when our immune system becomes depressed. When harmful microbes in the body are treated, illnesses disappear or are much improved. Without carrying out appropriate tests or scans, it is impossible to detect and appropriately treat harmful microbes. At MedB diagnostics, we use advanced computerised technology to detect a wide range of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungus, parasites and worms. GOLF’S NEW SUPERSTAR

With more than a week after the US Masters and that record breaking win by Jordan Spieth, you really have to ask how he does it. He is not longest driver off the Tee, not the best iron player and a not a deadly putter. But he has no apparent weakness, his biggest strength, seems to lie between his ears. The 21year-old became the second-youngest player to win at Augusta, behind only Woods' 1997 effort, and just the fifth man to lead the prestigious tournament from start to finish. Spieth's 28th birdie, at the 15th hole, made him the first player to reach 19 under par at the Masters -eclipsing Woods' 1997 winning total. His halfway total of 14 under par last Friday broke the 39-year-old record set by Ray Floyd in 1976, and his 54-hole effort of 16 under was also a new Augusta best. He broke records as a matter of routine. His 26th birdie of the competition, produced as early as the 10th hole of his final round on Sunday, was a tournament record. The 28th made him the only player ever to reach 19

under par in the Masters, and with an aggregate score of 270, he won by 4 shots at 18 under. He is the second youngest Masters champion in history. At an

reached superstar status in the game of golf, as he managed to hold off some of the biggest names in the sport to become just the fifth player in history to go wire-

aggregate score of 270, 18 under and won by 4, ahead of Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson, who in most other years would have been shooting it out at some extra holes for the green jacket! Spieth has officially

to-wire at the Masters. His commanding victory deserves a great deal of praise. That said, we also need to take some of his numerical scoring records with a pinch of salt. Augusta National has rarely, played easier than what was experienced last week during the 79th playing of the Masters. In recent years, Augusta National has managed to fight off technological advancements in the game with extremely firm and challenging green complexes. This has been particularly true for the par fives, which are fairly short by PGA Tour standards. But that was simply not the case last week. The greens started off softer than usual on Thursday and never firmed up as the week progressed. As such, Augusta National’s treacherous green complexes were turned into nothing more than large dart boards for the world’s best players. While many golf courses may be helpless against

local weather conditions, Augusta National is certainly not one of them. It has a SubAir system under each of its greens that allows it to suck as much moisture out of the greens as it would like. Essentially, the course could get its greens running at 14 on the Stimpmeter in a driving rain storm if it so desired. So barring any mechanical issues with the course’s SubAir system, one would have to conclude that Augusta National simply chose to present a much softer and scorable golf course last week when compared to previous years. The scoring conditions were there, because the greens were soft. 5 irons were making pitch marks, things that you just don't normally find there, but it's up to the committee! If they want to make the golf course a little drier, they can turn the sub airs on, they can suck the moisture out of the greens and get them firm, or they can live with it like it is, and they can go out there and make a load of birdies. While Spieth’s four-stroke victory over the field was certainly impressive, his total of 270 cannot really be compared to Woods’ 270 from 1997, or even Jack Nicklaus’ 271 from 1965, or Raymond Floyd’s 271 from 1976 due to the course conditions. When Woods posted his 270 18 years ago, his closest challenger was Tom Kite, twelve back, at six under par, and only 16 players in the field managed to break par that week. When Nicklaus posted a 271 (17under par) back in 1965, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player tied for second at eight under par, and only six players in the entire field managed to break par for the week. And when Floyd posted his 72-hole score of 271 (17-under par) back in 1976, Ben Crenshaw finished in second place at

nine under par, and only four players broke par for the week. Yes, Spieth technically matched Woods’ 72-hole score of 270, but he only won by four strokes, as Rose and Mickelson tied for second at 14 under par, which tied for the seventhbest Masters scores of all time. Mickelson and Rose would have also won all but three of the past 20 Masters with a score of 14 under par! Rory McIlroy finished with a 72-hole score of 276. which would have been one of the top-20 72-hole scores ever posted at Augusta and would have won nearly 75 percent of the Masters played over the past 20 years. McIlroy actually played his final 45 holes at 15 under par. One would have to assume that a stretch of playing at 15 under par for just 45 holes would have to be some kind of a record around the course. In total, 32 players finished under par for 72 holes last week, while five players reached double digits under par. It is never prudent to simply view scoring records without also examining course conditions and how the rest of the field performed under those same conditions. The 2011 U.S. Open is another perfect example of where scoring records were heavily aided by course conditions. McIlroy shattered virtually every scoring record imaginable at the 2011 U.S. Open, which was held at Congressional Country Club just outside of Washington D.C. His 16under-par performance for 72 holes was four strokes better than Woods’ 12under-par score during the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Woods won that Open by 15 strokes and was the only player in the entire field to break par at a very difficult Pebble Beach golf course. McIlroy won by

eight strokes in 2011, and a total of 20 players finished under par that week, including eight players who finished at five under par or better. McIlroy’s 2011 U.S. Open win was incredibly impressive, but it's not really comparable to Woods’ performance in 2000 when considering the extremely soft course conditions and almost non-existent rough at Congressional, that led to much of the field posting scores far lower than what is typically seen at U.S. Open Championships. This article should by no means be construed as an attempt to diminish Spieth’s accomplishments at last week’s Masters. Spieth achieved an incredibly dominant wire-to-wire victory against the best players on the planet at the young age of 21. However, we would be remiss if we simply took scoring numbers at face value and never truly evaluated contributing factors such as course conditions and the performance of the rest of the field. And while Spieth’s performance at the 2015 Masters was certainly one for the ages, it still falls well short of those past achievements from Nicklaus, Floyd and Woods that I’ve mentioned when you come to truly assessing all factors involved in each of their scoring records. But enough of the history lessons. Let’s all just sit back and enjoy Spieth’s amazing performance and look forward to the continued evolution of an exciting rivalry between Spieth, McIlroy and several other very young and talented golfers who are now beginning to make a lot of noise at the major championships. Golf has entered a fresh, fascinating era; Jordan Spieth, now ranked second only to McIlroy, are at its front position. Golf is in a good place, and we should all be thankful for that.

TITTER ON THE TEE KNOW YOUR RULES Two guys, one old, one young, are pushing their trolleys around Carrefour when they collide. The old man says to the young man, "Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife, and I obviously I wasn't paying attention to where I was going." The young man says, "That's OK, it's a coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too I can't find her and I'm getting a little desperate." The old man says, "Well, maybe I can help you find her... what does she look like?" The young man says, "Well, she is 27 yrs. old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, is buxom...wearing no bra, long legs, and is wearing short shorts. What does your wife look like?” To which the old guy replies,”It doesn’t matter. Let’s look for yours."

QUESTION

In a Medal round, Alan was on the green about two metres from the hole, when his opponent holed out and when picking his ball from the hole he left spike marks on Alan’s line. Alan patted the spike marks down with his putter, and his opponent called a penalty on Alan. Is this correct when the player was careless?

ANSWER Unfortunately he is correct. You can repair pitch marks but you cannot flatten the ground on which you are putting, even if the opponent stamped all over Alan’s line. Alan should receive (however unfair) a two stroke penalty or loss of hole in matchplay.

SUAREZ DOUBLE

ALL TO PLAY FOR

Barcelona will take a two-goal lead to the Nou Camp next Tuesday night courtesy of a confident first-leg win at Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last eight last Wednesday. A cool finish from Neymar and two superb solo goals from Luis Suarez won the game for the La Liga leaders. Lionel Messi also hit the post with a curling shot from the edge of the box.

Gareth Bale missed a glorious chance as Atletico held rivals Real to a goalless draw in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday night. Bale was through on goal in the third minute, but was thwarted by Jan Oblak, who was impressive for the home side throughout. The goalkeeper also made a crucial save from James Rodriguez, as Mario Suarez missed a late chance for Atletico. The sides meet again in the second leg at the Bernabeu on next Wednesday.

Real Madrid had an easy victory over Eibar to keep up the pressure on leaders Barcelona. Ronaldo scored his first free-kick of the season to put Madrid ahead midway through the first half and two minutes later Hernandez nodded in a second goal to net for the first time in just under six months. Then Jese scored a fine individual effort late in the second half to round off a win, with the next league encounter to come tomorrow evening (Saturday) against Malaga.

Barcelona threw away a two-goal lead which has rivals Real Madrid just two points behind them in the Primera Division title race. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a curled effort and Barcelona looked well on the way to a vital win when Neymar doubled the lead just past the half hour mark with an exquisite free-kick. But Ever Banega pulled a goal back before half-time to lift the home fans - and the majority of the fans inside the Sanchez Pizjuan were delighted when substitute Kevin Gameiro levelled from close range in the 84th minute. Barca have a tough next match ahead of them tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) when they entertain Champions League chasing Valencia.

PRICELESS POINTS

After a disappointing home-defeat to Getafe last week, Elche got a victory at bottom side Cordoba last Sunday night in their “must win game, which keeps them three points clear of the drop zone. The Ilicitanos keeper, Przemyslaw Tyton, hardly broke sweat as the hapless Andalucians should have been beaten by a bigger margin. Slack home defending allowed Elche to score both of their goals. The first came in the 41st minute(celebrations pictured) when Edu Albacar launched a long curling free-kick into the area which Roco got the slightest of touches on to head past Juan Carlos. It was a soft goal to concede, and it was a similar story in the 68th minute when Pasalic was allowed to head home completely unchallenged at the far post after Faycal Fajr's inswinging corner had cleared Juan Carlos and a home defender.

CORDOBA 0 ELCHE 2

Moments before that goal Cordoba actually came within inches of snatching an equaliser as Rene Krhin saw his glancing header come back off the post, but Pasalic's strike was a real blow to the home side and their increasing frustration was summed up by Borja's 81st-minute dismissal. Rodriguez reacted angrily after the pair had challenged for a high ball and, as he approached Borja, the Cordoba man put his head into the face of his opponent, who went sprawling to the ground. Borja was shown a straight red to further hamper Cordoba's challenge and although they thought they had pulled a goal back in the 86th minute, Luis Delgado was rightly adjudged to be offside. The Ilicitanos now have to wait until Monday night when they entertain Real Sociedad, managed by ex-Manchester United boss, David Moyes.

CHANCES MISSED

It was another two points dropped for Torrevieja as their play-hopes receded still further into the distance last Sunday. Coach Pedreno rotated his squad mainly due to injury, with the first half being a scrappy affair with only one chance of note before the half time whistle. That was when Torry keeper Oscar, like many times in recent weeks, was called upon to make a stunning double save in the 38th minute. Seven minutes into second half, it was Torrevieja that looked like troubling Paterna's own guardian, Carlos. The ball fell to Rafa Gomez on the edge of the area with the goalkeeper totally stranded. He was unable to get any height on his effort when any kind of leverage would have seen him score, and the shot was easily dealt with. Ten minutes later he had another chance, Carrasco finally finding some space and crossing to the far post where Rafa

Gomez's volley hit the ground and bounced over the bar. Torrevieja were starting to create a few half chances by this point and it looked like they might be able to end their run of away draws. Rafa Gomez flicked on a long ball from Adrian and Carrasco half-volleyed the ball home, only to be denied by a dubious offside flag. Two minutes later, against the run of play, Paterna took the lead. A corner was only half cleared, and the ball re-emerged on the left hand side of the Torrevieja penalty area. Unchallenged, the ball was rifled by Guille into the far right hand corner of Oscar's goal. It was another example of a lack of concentration costing Torrevieja dearly, but six minutes later they were back on level terms. Burguillos, making a rare forward pass, found Jorge on the right wing. He galloped past the full back and crossed hard and low into the middle. Rafa

Gomez made it third time lucky by arriving and flicking the ball home. Enter the returning Obele as a substitute for the final fifteen minutes, having been sidelined for three weeks with a calf strain. He was immediately in the action, providing a physical presence against the three Paterna central defenders. Carrasco put him clean through and Obele looked like he was going to make himself very popular indeed, but he lifted the ball clean over the bar. With minutes left. Brani cut in from the right on to his left foot, Obele completely unmarked in the area. The young winger opted to shoot with his weaker foot rather than play in the centre forward, and the shot was easily saved leading to a few choice words from his team-mate. Torry return to the Vicente Garcia stadium this Sunday as they entertain Jove Espanol with a 5.00 pm kickoff.

TD MONTESINOS 0 CD MONTESINOS 5

There was little doubt about this local derby result as CD outclassed their rivals and should have won by at least double the margin against the division’s perennial strugglers, who to their credit never gave up against a far superior side. CD were without Fernando and Orouker, and so that meant a full starting debut for the youngster Saez, who has impressed this season as a substitute. A whole string of CD chances went abegging in the first half, which nearly led to red faces as a Todo striker just shot wide on a rare attack with only keeper Lopez to beat. Constant CD pressure finally paid off, when Alberto sent Carlos off on a run which he crossed for Saez to unleash an unstoppable shot into the net on the half hour, but that

was the only strike of the first half. Todo bravely didn’t throw in the towel in the second half, despite two goals in just three minutes from Vaz, who squandered opportunities to get another hat-trick under his belt, including a chance from a well-crafted 17 man move. Young Bradley came on for Vaz, and he immediately found Carlos, who deservedly made it four-nil, and one minute later, Carlos struck again when a clearance from Alberto put him clear in on goal. After their victory over TD, CD Montesinos entertain another struggling side, Deportivo Rayo Orihuela this Sunday afternoon with a 5.00 pm kick-off.

The recent Open Day for the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) featured cold and cloudy weather, along with strong winds, but despite that their special day at Los Narejos attracted over 70 visitors, coming from as far afield as Totana, Catral, and Mazarron to find out about SAMM’s activities. Unfortunately the strong winds prevent-

ed some boats being moored on the jetty, so the visitors could only be shown photographs and nobody could be given a trial sail. A further Open Day is planned for the autumn. To find out more about SAMM please visit their web site www.sailingmarmenor.com

HOW DOES HE DO THAT?

The Litmus Paper of Manchester maestros is swinging back to Red from Blue, where it’s been for the last couple of years. Well, since Alex Ferguson retired and the Blue Boys from the other side of town took over as Champions again last season. Now, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea have taken over the Prem, and there are problems at The Etihad, seen by all in recent weeks with key defeats. Now City’s humiliation was completed last Sunday as the Red Devils swarmed all over City to convincingly win 4 – 2. This was despite a storming Blues start that saw goal machine Sergio Aguero open the scoring with aplomb, but revitalised United soon clicked into gear with storming goals from Young, Fellaini, Mata and Smalling. As a nosey neutral, puzzled along with many others I have to ask the £64m question: how has Louis van Gaal done it? Somehow he has righted the listing ship, repaired the holes, hoisted the sails and now the Good Ship Manchester United is sailing on strongly across the ocean of the Premier League – and it’s another huge test of recovery against leaders Chelsea on Sunday. Well, come on then, tell me please – how has LVG done it? We were all poking fun at the seemingly arrogant Dutchman as he struggled to get to grips

with a team in transit, some senior players leaving, other top players injured, amazingly-paid mercenaries coming and under-performing, and many more problems at the Theatre of Dreams – where the expectations are about as high as you can get in the UK. But credit where credit is due, this big man has the testicular equipment necessary to succeed at a stadium where there is nowhere to hide, with 75 thousand every week demanding success. United are third at the moment just behind Arsenal, the Gunners are also firing on all four. League tables don’t lie and if unconvincing earlier this season, the Red Devils deserve to be there and are now playing some traditional Unitedtype, exhilarating football. Funny thing though: the men who are doing it for Louis, the ones putting the valuable points on the board are mainly those who were here when LVG came: Mata, Fellaini, Carrick, Young, Smalling, Jones, even Valencia reborn at full b a c k .

Outstanding all season by example for the Old Trafford cause have been captain Wayne Rooney and star goalkeeper David de Gea, both emulating the Manchester United tradition of total commitment. It’s hoped the rumours of Real Madrid stealing the Spanish de Gea, Ronaldo-style are not true – but the Spanish giants usually get their man, don’t they? And there is still the puzzling enigma of young Adnan Januzaj to fit in - high class problems though. The two pricey newbies that have settled successfully into the 2015 United side are Ander Herrera and Daley Blind.

Herrera is scoring goals and linking well with Rooney, but Blind is a revelation who looks like he’s been at Old Trafford for years: versatile enough to be able to play almost anywhere, and does, the flying Dutchman is always in the thick or it, a great team player who looks to have a big future at United. The story with the really big buy boys is very confusing. Angel di Maria came via Real Madrid as a world class international who could seemingly walk into any team Martini-style: anytime, anyplace anywhere – except, it now seems Old Trafford. The Argentinian may still prove successful in the UK, but the chemistry looks wrong, and there are no injury problems. And there’s Radamel Falcao, on his day regarded as one of the world’s top strikers – except like Di Maria, the Columbian hasn’t had any of those unplayable days yet at the Theatre of Dreams; he looks a worried shadow of the man who once terrorised top class defences wherever he played in the world. That expensive centre back, a n o t h e r Argentinian Marcos Rojo also cannot hold down a r e g u l a r defensive position

RUGBY ROUND UP

In the final round matches in the Murcia territorial league, second division last weekend, the Torrevieja Tigers finished bottom of the table, despite a battling performance that saw them lose 26-22 at Murcia. Meanwhile, it was one try each as the San Javier Sharks(above the Tigers in the table) drew five-all at Cartagena B(pictured). In the Cadete league, ITV Orihuela Vega Baja beat Totana 33-22, having trailed 7-10 to the visitors at half-time, whilst the Torrevieja Tigers went one step better than the seniors with a 22 points to seven victory at Murcia. San Javier went down 19-14 at Cartagena.

where a combination of previous incumbents Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are usually preferred. The much-vaunted £30m buy from Southampton, teenager Luke Shaw has had a dreadful first year with injuries and wears a big question mark at Old Trafford. But successful football is all about confidence, a factor which is greatly influenced by the manager and his coaching staff. Somehow LVG has given the United players, those existing ones there when he came, the self-belief of being selected to play for one of the great clubs in world-wide football. United have a sixtysomething year tradition of success in terms of trophies and great footballing names: Edwards, Best, Law, Charlton, Stiles, Crerand, Robson, Bruce, Schmeichel,

Cantona, Giggs, van Nistelrooy and many more who have pulled on the famous red shirt have trail-blazed the way previously at Old Trafford and now this Dutchman’s team are representing him on the pitch. On paper it was a sound proposition to bring Everton’s David Moyes to Old Trafford – and given time the proud Scot might have been successful. But top-class football has no forgiving time factor, no patience. United’s seventh position last year, judged from being champions by a street the previous year was deemed failure and Moyes paid the price. But with the most enormous football pressure there can be, Louis van Gaal has stood tall, faced his critics (including me) and come through. And I still don’t really know how he’s done it – do you?

Pressure time for Pellegrini

Mancunian bragging rights are now red again (see over) as United stormed back from an early Aguerro strike to put four past their nasty neighbours in the Blue corner. This swung the pendulum from recent defeats back to Old Trafford remembering Fergie time. On Sunday afternoon you could forget your fabulously-expensive imported mercenaries in favour of some stalwart ‘old’ favourites: Young, Fellaini, Mata and Smalling inflicted the scoring damage on a Man City side in mini crisis. Klipp Klopp! - what’s that noise? A certain well-fancied German manager has just cantered into the paddock having just resigned this week. There is all sorts of pressure on Blues manager Manuel Pelligrini now, and the craggy Chilean will be feeling the icy draft of uncertainty that recent key defeats have brought - but somewhat sharpened locally and ironically at the hands of lucky, lofty Louis van Gaal, the Dutchman who has put the smile, swagger and now snigger back on United s happy Red faces.

DAYLIGHT ROBBERY QPR...............0 CHELSEA......1

A masked man playing Lone Rangers ambushed eleven men at their home on Sunday evening, getting away with three priceless gems and leaving the protesting victims with nothing and the robber may have had inside help from suspect guards. This callous hoodlum is part of a gang that allegedly bribes key personnel to make it easy for them to steal what is on offer, it has happened on three separate occasions in the last few weeks... ...and at Loftus Road on Sunday evening Cesc Fabregas scored the only goal of the game against Quite Probably Relegated three minutes from the end, to virtually wrap up the Premier title for Chelsea. That result will likely also condemn Rangers to going straight back to the Chumpionship from whence they came It’s probably just a coincidence, but in Chelsea’s last three games the Blues have been gifted victory by three howling goalkeeper errors: first Hull’s Allan McGregor let a Remy soft shot straight through his legs, then two weeks ago Stoke’s Begovic sent his awful clearance straight out to Hazard - returned with interest to Remy (again), jammy 2- 1 win to Chelsea. Now again on Saturday Rob Green’s abortive boot-out went straight to – who else, Hazard, duly dispatched via Oscar to Fabregas who scored in the Prem for the first time since Pontius was a pilot. Serious summary: Chelsea: one shot on target, QPR 15 – daylight robbery – sorry, I mean - that’s football...

Cup Fever Those crafty Foxes may outwit us all – in the East v West Midlands derby currentlybottom-strugglers Leicester came back twice to stun poor old West Brom. Baggies fans were all in white mourning the memory of their long-departed hero Jeff Astle, who died from cerebral problems sustained from heading too many cannonball footballs in the old days. Even missing a penalty the never-give-up Foxes somehow fought back to level the match with ten minutes to go, but then incredibly on the stroke of full time Jamie Vardie streaked away for the winner in front of four thousand frenzied fans to set up a grandstand finish to their first Premier season. Super Saturday sees the Foxes home to Swansea - and how about this fear factor for fellow flounderers? Of Leicester’s last seven matches, five are at that King

Power place in the East Midlands: surely after being bottom most of the season the Foxes can’t escape the drop – especially after everything that’s happened in this amazing season? Crystal Palace Dicktated a 4 – 0 defeat at Sunderland where 42,000 turned up at the flickering Stadium of Light to watch a(nother) embarrassing defeat for the Black Cats, four second half goalks in fourteen minutes. That man Glenn Murray - six goals in six games - opened the scoring ahead of a blistering eight minute second half hattrick from Yannick Bolasie to take Pardew’s pleasers up to a giddy eleventh - and no normal relegation worries. Pardew really seems to have come home at last and those loyal, loud, long-suffering supporters are enjoying success once more. Credit where it’s due, Alan Pardew has achieved storming eight wins from twelve matches, and all this following dogs’ abuse at nervy Newcastle. Prodigal Pardew is now show-

Fabregas snatch & grab ing all his management qualities following a torrid time on Tyneside. However, his successor John Carver is suffering badly now, it’s lucky Pardew’s team had put the points up at St James Park early doors: now the Magpies’ sixth defeat in a row came at Anfield on Monday at the hands of lively Liverpool. What a gas, it was no laughing matter as the value of Sterling increased again with the young England striker’s cool early goal. An exquisite chip from Henderson found the man of the moment, who trapped, twisted, turned and chipped past Krul all in one exhilarating movement to put the Reds on course for a 2 – 0 win and consolidating fifth position = and Euro-enviously eyeing Man City in fourth place. Can Reading follow Hereford, Wrexham and a few other notable Davids as the Royals take on in-form Arsenal at Wembley in the first Cup Final semi on Saturday. Gooners might well be uneasy, Arseanl

have blown it too many times. On present form Arsene’s Army shuld blow Reading away, but… In t’other semi on Sunday Astonishlyrevived Villa have a day out in the smoke to play a Liverpool side who if they miss out on Europe will want to make the most of this opportunity for silverware. But… beware of Benteke, Brendan, the b i g Belgian’s on fire - and the Reds could get burnt…
