CAMERA SHY MOST WANTED BRIT IN “BODY BAG” QUIZ ALEX TRELINSKI

A

British man wanted in connection with the murder of 25 year old Francis Brennan, whose body was found wrapped in plastic on La Zenia beach last year, has been arrested in a swoop by the Guardia Civil. Guardia officers linked up with members of the UK National Crime Agency to raid a Javea villa on the Northern Costa Blanca, where 54 year old Paul Monk was arrested under Operation Captura, which seeks to bring British criminals on the run in Europe to justice back in

the UK. He was wanted on suspicion of conspiracy to supply cocaine and cannabis after he was allegedly involved in the handover of cocaine in Cockfosters, north London, in May 2013, amongst other drug offences. But Monk’s extradition to the UK is being postponed over the investigation into the kidnap and murder of Brennan last year. His body was discovered in a heavily-taped plastic bag on La Zenia Beach in March 2014, some three months after he went missing, having been “kidnapped” in Javea by three men pretending to be Spanish police officers, His

feet were tied to a concrete block to make him sink and the body disappear, but it wasn’t clear whether he was already dead when thrown into the sea. Mr Brennan fled the UK for Spain ahead of a sentencing date in October 2013 for an assault he committed in the Thames Valley area the previous year. The Guardia and NCA officers dropped in on Paul Monk last week as he oversaw workmen laying a marble patio around the swimming pool of his luxury Javea villa. Dramatic footage of the arrest, which shows armed officers swooping in on the property and discovering an imita-

tion firearm and bundles of cash worth 125 thousand euros, was released by the Guardia on Tuesday. The Guardia had been staking out Monk’s four-bedroomed villa for a number of weeks after they had received tipoffs from local people, culminating with Monk’s appearance a few weeks ago on the latest Operation Captura list. A spokesman said that Monk was careful not to leave his Javea hideout, getting other people to do his shopping and errands, but he wasn’t expecting his doorstep visitors that led to his arrest and an appearance in front of a Denia judge. continued on page 2

continued from front page The Guardia are now investigating Monk’s alleged links to the murder and believe he was an associate of Paul Scott, who the Guardia also wish to question in connection Mr Brennan’s kidnap and murder. The National Crime Agency and Merseyside Police have been supporting the Guardia Civil-led investigation. Scott was arrested in December last year when he entered the UK in a light aircraft, landing on a remote rural airstrip in Norfolk. The National Crime Agency said Scott was part of a 26-strong organised crime network which plotted to smuggle up to 40 tonnes of drugs into the UK. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import cocaine and was sentenced to 14 years at Liverpool Crown Court in January. He is now facing extradition proceedings in July to face questions over Mr Brennan's killing.

A 13-year-old boy armed with a crossbow and a machete killed a supply teacher and wounded four people at his Barcelona secondary school last Monday morning. The unidentified boy was arrested after the attack that also saw two other teachers and two students injured at the Joan Fuster school in the northern part of the city. Authorities said he will not face criminal charges because he is aged under 14. The troubled teen had drawn Swastikas on his desk, whilst at least one of the unnamed pupil's classmates says he had compiled a 25 strong blacklist of teachers and other students whom he 'did not like', and that although he talked of killing those on the list before committing suicide, they did not take him seriously. He had made the murder weapon, a crossbow, himself out of wood and pens, having 'easily' found instructions for doing so on the internet. The child also brought a machete and a home-made Molotov cocktail with him, which teachers just managed to stop him from blowing up in time. Despite the murder having been planned, the teenager cannot be held criminally responsible – or even liable under civil law – because he is too young, but is likely to be held in a children’s home for up to three years, after getting treatment at a Barcelona children’s hospital. The ANPE teachers union says it is the first documented case of a pupil killing a teacher in the country.

Record tourist numbers poured vital money into Spanish coffers over the first three months of 2015, with half a million more visitors to Spain compared to the same period last year. The period between January and March saw 10.6 million foreign tourists a rise of five point three percent on 2014’s returns. British visitors once again led the way, with just over two million making Spain their choice: - a boost of five point three per cent on the same quarter last year.

COUNTING CENTS

Wine sales in Spanish supermarkets have gone up by six percent during the economic crisis as more people opted to stay at home and save money. Figures from the Bank of Spain say that spending on most products has gone down significantly with spirit sales down by a massive 40 percent. Average till receipts have also dropped as people have cut back on spending, but wine sales have gone in the opposite direction as less money is spent in bars and restaurants, as more Spaniards have preferred to dine in. Sales of coffee, tea and cocoa in supermarkets have also risen by an average thirty percent with people again preferring to save money and take their morning café con leche at home.

PEOPLE MOVES

The number of foreigners living in Spain fell in 2014 for the third straight year, according to official figures released this week. There were a total of 4,718,864 foreigners registered in Spain as of January 1st, 2015, a six percent drop over the same period a year ago, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute. The number of British nationals registered in Spain fell by six per cent percent to 282,120. The Murcia region, along with the Baleares Islands, bucked the national trend in showing a population rise last year. The Valencian region recorded an overall fall of just under 28 thousand inhabitants, with Alicante Province suffering an overall drop of 15 thousand, mainly accounted by foreign exits, of which nearly seven thousand were British departures. The National Statistics Institute says that Spain’s population dropped by 170 thousand last year, mainly down to nonSpaniards leaving the country, making it three years in a row for population falls. In contrast, the Murcia region showed an actual overall rise, albeit a tiny one, of 231. The overall drops for 2014 were lower compared to 2013, which is indicative of some economic recovery. A tenth of people registered in Spain are now classified as foreign, but that figure rises to 14.2 percent in Murcia and 14 percent in the Valencia region.

FALL OF FEAR

A 64 year old German man spent two days on the floor of his La Marina village home unable to call for help, after a fall. The incident happened on Saturday when the disabled man tripped over a wardrobe door and fell onto the floor unable to move for two days, trapped by the furniture. He managed to eventually free and use a phone in the hallway to dial 112 for the emergency services at 10.30pm on Monday night, some 48 hours later. The fire brigade were brought in to find a way into the house, but were not needed though as a relative had a spare key to open the front door. Besides bruising and numbness, the victim was not seriously injured, with officials planning to inspect the house to make sure that the incident is not repeated.

CLOSE CALL

Six children and their bus supervisor were slightly injured as their school coach was involved in a collision with a car outside a college in the Aguas Nuevas area of Torrevieja on Wednesday afternoon. The accident happened around 3.00pm on Calle Luis Cánovas Rodríguez, by the Aldi supermarket, when the car, driven by an 80 year old non-Spaniard, hit the bus at slow speed across the road from the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Rosario. The coach had 21 passengers on board, and six youngsters aged between four and eleven were treated for shock and bruises in hospital, as well as the 23 year old supervisor, which suffered an anxiety attack.

HOSPITAL PRAISED

The 25th birthday of the Vega Baja Hospital was celebrated on Tuesday in a special event attended by the Valencian Health Minister, Manuel Llombart, along with mayors from across the region. The ceremony was staged at La Lonja Auditorium in Orihuela, with Llombart praising the work of the hospital over a quarter of century, which has provided health services to over 177 thousand residents in the area.

HOT ROD

ADDED PROTECTION A car caught fire on Calle Azorín in Catral last Friday afternoon (April 17th), not far from the local school. The blaze happened at 2.00pm when the vehicle stalled and when an attempt to re-start the engine led to smoke coming from it, a sharp exit was the order of the day, with firefighters called in to put out the flames.

BAD AND GOOD

Spain's unemployment figures went up slightly in the first quarter of the year, according to the National Statistics Institute, with the jobless rate rising to 23.78 percent up from 23.7 percent in the previous quarter. The number of people out of work in the January to March period actually fell by 13,100 to 5.44 million when compared with the previous quarter, the biggest drop in unemployment in a first quarter since 2005.

The La Pedrera reservoir and surrounding area at Torremendo is set to become a designated protected wetland under plans from the Valencia Government. BOATING FIRST

Santa Pola is staging its first ever Boat Show in the Yacht Club area over next weekend's May Day holiday celebrations. Local and regional exhibitors will be taking part in the event which will run from next Thursday (April 30th) through to Sunday (May 3rd). Visitors will also be able to learn about local sea traditions, led of course by fishing.

TIME WASTER

A Crevillente man who lied about an assault, and who then attacked two Guardia Civil officers, as well as smearing his cell in his own excrement at the local Guardia barracks (pictured), has been jailed for a year. The man, who had an extensive police record, made a false report to the police about two Moroccans fighting each other in Elche, with one of them being stabbed. The local police turned up at the scene only to find out that it was a hoax, and so they called in the Guardia Civil to find the prankster. Officers located him and were assaulted for their trouble, as they carted him off to a cell at their barracks, which the man then decided to decorate with his own waste matter.

GET SEATED

SCAM SMASHED

A long battle to get a bus shelter with seating at a stop on the San Luis urbanisation in Torrevieja is over. Impromptu chairs have become a regular feature at the stop on Avenida de Baracaldo since a shelter was promised in 2010, but failed to materialise. Work though has started on fulfilling the five year promise, with local elections to come next month.

HORRIFIC TIME 54 people have been arrested around Spain, six of them in Alicante Province, for making and using fake credit cards. The scam involved "assigning" the cards to mainly South American accounts, with the gang using information they had got from hackers. The National Police raided five homes where the cards were being made and used in, with a total of 19 places being visited in several provinces. Terminals and hundreds of cloned cards were seized along with thousands of pills and medicines. Over three thousand people learnt how to kill zombies amongst a whole host of activities in a Festival of Terror at the Alicante Exhibition Centre (IFA) last weekend, as survival techniques were demonstrated in a realistic mock battle. Meanwhile, Pilar de la Horadada was awash with zombies and potential victims last Saturday night in a fun eight hour event called Survival Zombie. Starting at Playa de Las Higuericas, around one thousand participants tried to dodge zombies on a special route. The event ran through to the early hours of Sunday morning, with many bars and restaurants staying open deep into the night.

BENIDORM A WEE DRAM BID FOR THE ROAD

Benidorm is to apply for UNESCO world heritage status, to put itself alongside such cultural icons as the Great Wall of China and the pyramids of Giza. Sociologist Mario Gaviria, who is leading the push, said Benidorm was the ideal candidate. “During the past 50 years, some 250 million visitors have enjoyed Benidorm. It’s a symbol of harmonious coexistence that happily brings together people of all nationalities and languages,” he said. Benidorm mayor Agustín Navarro said the idea of applying to UNESCO had come about during discussions on how to change the image of the mass-market resort. “We wanted to protect all that we’ve achieved during the recent decades as well as give it dignity and value,” said Navarro. The idea is in the embryonic stages, Navarro added, and it could take up to six years before Benidorm finds out if it made the list. He hoped to have everything in place to introduce the idea at the next council meeting.

A drunken stag group caused chaos on a fight to AlicanteElche airport last Friday(April 17th). Fellow passengers sat stunned as the yobs - some of whom were shirtless - sung and swore their way from Glasgow to El Altet on a Jet2 flight early last Friday morning. Witnesses said the group drank heavily, abused fellow passengers and airline staff and refused to sit down when the aircraft was landing. Police were called by cabin crew to escort one of the party, a man in his thirties, off the aircraft when it arrived at Alicante-Elche. The group were en route to Benidorm, and the man who was held by police, was later released but banned from travelling home on his booked Jet2 flight. One passenger said: 'It was the most horrendous flight I have ever been on. There was a large stag party who boarded the plane at Glasgow and they obviously had already had a lot to drink. They were shouting, singing and swearing throughout the flight. A few of them took their tops off and refused to sit in their seats when told to.'

Spaniards live the longest in Europe, to an average of 83 years, while Spanish mums are the oldest on the continent, delaying having their first child until they reach 30. Spanish people can expect to live longer than their European counterparts, according to a new Eurostat study, with an average life expectancy of 82.5 years. But while Spaniards might be living longer, they are also waiting longer to have children, the study reveals. Spanish mothers, like those in the UK, give birth to their first child at the average age of 30 years old, while first-time mothers in all the other EU member states have an average age somewhere between 25 and 29

SEX SLAVE WIFE

Elche prosecutors have called for a Spaniard to be jailed for four years for forcing his Russian wife into prostitution. The hearing at Elche criminal court(pictured) heard how the 45 year old man was accused of pressurising his 41 year old wife into paid sex acts with other men at their home in Arenales del Sol over four years ago, with the husband pocketing all the money that she earnt. The defendant denies the charges saying that he did not force his wife into anything.

BOGUS BOOTY

A trader selling fake goods at last Thursday’s (April 16th) La Marina market got a shock when he was arrested by the local police. Cops had been tipped off that counterfeit items were being sold by the hawker on a regular basis, and so they carted him off to an Orihuela judge, along with a selection of fake handbags, purses, and belts.

SCHOOL BATTLE CONTINUES

The war of words over the state of the Príncipe de España school in Rojales took another twist at the end of last week, with the PTA group, AMPA, sending a letter to the Valencian Government Ombudsman along with copies to Rojales council and other groups, seeking total clarification that the buildings are safe for children to go into. This follows a recent incident when part of an overhang fell onto the ground, and a planned protest which would have seen lessons taken outdoors being stopped by Valencian education chiefs. Last Friday, parents, teachers, and children staged a human chain protest instead, as they sought guarantees over the safety of the building, followed by another protest last Monday involving youngsters wearing safety helmets .A five million euro tender from Valencia for redeveloping the site closes in the middle of next month, with work expected to start at the end of the summer.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR A THIEF IN THE FAMILY

I SOMETIMES wonder what would have happened if my mother and father had never met. Would I still have been created but by a different couple who, with their different genetic make-up to my actual parents, would have produced a different child? (I apologise for using the word 'different' three times in that sentence, only I couldn't come up with a . . . er . . . different word.) Anyway, would the other me have grown up to marry the same Mrs S or would I have wed somebody else? And what would the knock-on effect have been on our two children? Would they have been different to our two, too? Indeed, would we have had the same pet pooch or would the other me and the different Mrs S have chosen as our faithful companion an expensive Weimaraner hunting dog, which we probably would have named something posh like Winchester, rather than the daft mongrel mutt we picked up cheap and which we called Brian. 'An alternative pet dog with a different Dave Silver as its owner. It's an interesting concept, don't you agree?' I observed at a social gathering the other day. The other people in the room shifted uncomfortably in their seats and glanced nervously at our host for guidance. The moderator cleared his throat. 'Er . . . I'm just wondering, Mr Silver, whether group psychother-

apy is going to suit you after all. Perhaps you would like to leave us now and consider what I have just suggested.' I shrugged and left the room. I heard the door being locked and bolted behind me. 'Nobody understands me,' I grumbled to Mrs S when I got home. Mrs S looked puzzled. 'You'll have to explain exactly what you mean by that.' I laughed ironically. 'Having to explain why I'm not understood just serves to prove my point that I'm not understood.' M r s S

pondered awhile and then finally came up with her reasoned response. 'I don't believe you are on the same plane as the rest of mankind.' I hurled myself to the floor and assumed the foetal position. 'Don't ever mention the word plane!' I cried. 'You know I'm frightened of flying.' 'Very well then,' sighed

Mrs S. 'You're not on the same planet as the rest of mankind.' I chuckled, this time genuinely, as I got up from the carp e t . 'Wouldn't it be funny if in another galaxy far, far away there was a p l a n e t identical

to Earth and with a Dave Silver doppelganger living on it?' Mrs S shook her head. 'I don't think the universe could cope with two of you.' 'Ah!' I interjected.

'But which universe a r e your

referring t o ? This one? T h e other

one?' Mrs S hissed through gritted teeth: 'Talking of one-to-one, why don't you try individual psychoanalysis?' 'But I've already done that,' I replied. 'It was the psychologist who sent me into group therapy. And that was halfway through my

introductory session. The shrink didn't seem to understand me.' Which reminds me. When I was a young man I used to frequent coffee bars with my best friend Eric the future dentist. Our mission, should we wish to accept it (and we always did) was to chat up the ladies in the hope that they would accompany us to the pictures or the pub. 'Is there a thief in your family?' my bezzie mate Eric asked this gorgeous young blonde one evening in July, 1962.

'Huh?' she said. Eric smiled and breathed into her ear. 'I reckon there has to be a thief in your family because someone stole the stars and placed them in your eyes.' ' W o w ! ' exclaimed the blonde, fluttering her starry eyelashes. 'I think this could be the start of a super relationship.' And she grabbed Eric's hand and whisked him away for an evening at the pictures or the pub. I plucked up courage and sidled over to this other girl who like me was sitting on her own, blowing froth off

her coffee. 'Er, you don't know me,' I stammered. She looked down her cappuccinosplashed nose at me and said: 'No, I don't know you and I would be deliriously happy to keep it that way.' I tried another tack. 'Have you ever wondered how it would have affected you if your parents had never met?' The girl glared at me. 'What the hell are you suggesting? That I'm illegitimate?' That's two strikes, I thought. One more and I'm out. 'Tell me something,' I said in one last desperate gamble. 'Is there a thief in your family?' The girl burst into tears of fury. 'So what if I do have a brother in prison? What's it to do with you anyway? Now bog off, you strange little person!' Fast forward more than 50 years to the present. Mrs S, obviously feeling a bit sorry for me, said: 'Have you ever thought about going for counselling?' 'I already have,' I said. 'But after five minutes, the counsellor sent me to see the psychologist who after 20 minutes sent me into group therapy where I lasted half an hour before I was thrown out.' Mrs S shrugged. 'Well at least you're lasting a bit longer each time you see someone. Now if you don't mind, we've been chatting for 45 minutes and I need to get on with my housework.'

LOLA’S TRAVELS SATANIC HORROR RIDDLE

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of his lodger in a Madrid suburb, and is being questioned over four other unexplained disappearances in what some people believe may be a serial killer investigation with satanic links. The Guardia Civil found an industrial meat grinder and have confirmed they were the bloodttains of a missing lodgers in a house in the Madrid suburb of Majadahonda, belonging to Bruno Fernández who has been dubbed the 'Majadahonda Ripper'. Fernández has a history of psychological problems, and his lodger, Adriana Giogiosa, a 55year-old Argentinian woman, had been reported as missing. It comes as residents living near one of his former homes have described how he was involved in apparent satanic rituals. Neighbours said he 'regularly' sacrificed live animals prompting a series of complaints to police. Guardia officers found rental contracts signed by three other people when searching his house in Majadahonda. Investigators are trying to ascertain the whereabouts of all the lodgers - all of whom are believed to be immigrants. The Guardia arrested Fernández at his home after he refused to answer their questions. The house was in the process of being repainted, with officers now searching rubbish dumps across the Madrid area.

WALK OR RUN VELLY NAUGHTY Two cheating Chinese men have been arrested in Mallorca for fiddling their driving theory exam. One of them took the test in the main exam hall and filmed the questions, transmitting them in real time to the other, who sat in the hallway. Each time the man in the hall went to answer a question, his complex gadgets beeped or vibrated at a very low volume to alert him of which were the right answers on the multiple choice paper, via the man in the corridor who was looking them up and tipping him off. The candidate in the exam room had reportedly paid two thousand euros for the other man's help to cheat in the test. He is said to be an undocumented migrant.

Over 400 people run above La Marina village around the Sierra del Mola last Sunday in the eight and a half kilometre Huit i Mig fun run, with some 50 individuals taking a more leisurely pace in walking(Volta a peu) the course. The village itself hosted a variety of events including the Sunday market; pony and cart rides; and guided tours of local attractions.

BARKING MAD

An Ibiza animal lover has been reported for the noise produced by the estimated 70 dogs and 30 cats that she rescued and kept at her home. Local police in Sant Antoni de Portmany on the west coast of the island went along to the house where they discovered the menagerie. The inspection was carried out along with a vet, who certified that the animals were all in a good state. According to neighbours the animals were strays, picked up off the street by the woman who then looked after them. Complaints started to be made about the noisy cats and dogs, as well as the stench that was produced by so many animals living under one roof. Only three of the animals had a vaccination card and chip, which are obligatory for all domestic pets in Spain. If the animals were in good shape, the house was not. It was not properly weather proofed and was covered in animal excrement. The local council is talking the necessary steps to get the animals vaccinated and will find alternative homes for them if need be.

CROOKED CODES

Local burglars are using a cryptic code to help fellow criminals target wealthy and defenceless homeowners. The symbols indicate whether a home offers rich pickings; has already been burgled; or even occupied by a vulnerable female. The Torrevieja-based N332, the Guardia Civil's support group for ex-pats, has now released a chart of the most commonly found symbols to help residents stay one step ahead. "Knowledge is power. If we're aware of it happening we can see if there have been any burglaries in the area and we can analyse the data to gather intelligence," said spokesman Francisco Morales. "We do not want to alarm people, only inform them." As well as identifying prime property, the secret code also warns burglars away from homes which have nothing worth stealing or are too risky to break into.

The club’s April gathering fell on Easter Monday, and there was a talk about drought-resistant plants, in addition to a light-hearted Easter-themed competition to find the best edible bunny, which was won by Irene Davis, and not surprisingly included some carrots. The next meeting will be held at Bar Trasgu, Calle Alicante 12, Formentera del Segura, on Monday May 4th at 2.15pm. Visitors are more than welcome, and for more details, Email:vegabajagardenclub@gm ail.com

FAREWELL MABEL

People often ask, what is the most difficult part of the work we do, rescuing and rehabilitating severely abused animals. It is always a tough question, because it is always difficult seeing the animals in the terrible states they are in when they arrive, but we know that we can turn them around, so that the rest of their lives are full of peace, love and tranquility. For me the most difficult part of the work we do is saying goodbye. Saying goodbye to a dog, who you have nurtured from being rock bottom, to then having a wagging tail and a sparkle in their eyes, is sad in one way and happy in the next. It is sad that we have to bid farewell to a dog who we have bonded with and who we will miss. I will walk down streets we use to walk, or go to an area where we use to play and they are not with me anymore. They are gone to pastures new. I also must be happy though, as I know that our work here with that dog is done and he or she are now going to a loving forever home, where they will have noth-

ing but the very best for the rest of their lives. This week we said goodbye to Mabel, a German Shepherd puppy, who we rescued from the perrera in Almeria. A human being, if I can call them that, punched Mabel on the head so hard that it detached her retina, which made her go blind. The savage blow to her head also made her go partially deaf. To add to that, when I collected her from the perrera, she also had the deadly disease, Parvovirus. All in all, it is fair to say that this beautiful little girls introduction to planet Earth was a very harsh and brutal one. When we save dogs from killing stations in Spain, our vow and promise to them is that they will never, ever endure hardship again. When we re-home them to loving homes, if anything should ever go wrong, we will take any dog back in an instance, with us paying for the transport, no problem. So Mabel did not know that day when I collected her, that her life was about to change for the better, but eventually she realised that she had

ended up in a very kind, loving and caring environment.

On Saturday, when I placed her gently into the van, that would take her

to her new Mum, Jill Halliday, in the UK, I placed my hand on her head and said a little prayer that the rest of her life would be filled with the beautiful love that every dog should be granted on this earth. You see people must realise that dogs are our teachers. We are not here to teach them. They are in our lives to show us how to live. I always say to people that dogs have no egos but they have instant forgiveness as they live in the moment and they follow calm. If all humans lived by these same rules, what a beautiful world we would live in. As I write this, Mabel is now 1200 miles up the road in her new home and yes, we do miss her, we miss her presence greatly, but we are comforted in the knowledge that she is with the best person we could have possibly found for her. Mabel was the innocent victim of brutal abuse, but she has now moved on and is living in peace and that should be a lesson to us all. Saying goodbye is very difficult, but now there is

a new abused dog at our door and we will patch up this little souls life, just as we did with Mabel. So right now we are very happy, because today we are saying our favourite word, “Hello. www.thedogyouneed.co m is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. TIME TO BE CRUEL TO BE KIND

TWO major stories have hit the headlines over the past week - one has had major TV air time, the other has not. The former is the appalling loss of life which occurred off the coast of Libya when a boat, overfilled with illegal immigrants, overturned. Hundreds of people drowned. The other was news that Nigerian Christians were thrown overboard and drowned following a fight with Muslims in a dinghy carrying about 100 African refugees. Although this incident was widely reported in the press, it was not treated with anything like the appropriate air time on British TV, and it makes me wonder whether the broadcasters are under instructions to always play down such stories in an attempt to prevent religious and racial tensions. If that is true, then it stores up big trouble for the future when the bubble does eventually burst. But, I´m not going to hold back! The killing of Christians in such an appalling way demonstrates what low-life is attempting to get into Europe and what an appalling threat it poses right across Europe and the UK. We´ve heard over and over again in recent months of Muslims killing Christians - beheading them or slaughtering in one Muslim country after another. It has become so dangerous for Christians in these countries, that they are petrified of practising their religion even in private. And it´s not just Christians they are killing either. It´s people who are not converted to their extreme Islamic views too, so atheists will have to watch out. Do we really want these kinds of people prepared to carry out similar atrocities in Europe or in Britain? I certainly don´t, but if we sleepwalk the way we´re doing,

then it will surely happen. We´ve heard all the pleas from the liberal left how the world must help the poor refugees fleeing from war zones, famine, starvation and every other pestilence. Of course civilised society cannot turn its back on the plight of such people most of whom are innocent victims, but we cannot accept into Europe or the UK the entire population of Muslim-controlled Africa or the Middle East either. The fact is that e x t r e m e Muslims have been entering into Europe and are still doing so, prepared to kill Christians at the drop of a hat - the way they have so c l e a r l y demonstrated. Our world is becoming ever more dangerous and steps must be taken to combat it. It is no good the Pope saying that more should be done to help the immigrants risking life and limb to get to Europe. No. It´s time to be cruel to be kind. It´s time for the rest of the world to firmly tell the Muslim world to put its house in order, and make sure it does. Virtually all the unrest is caused within the Muslim world and it spills out from there. And enough is enough. If we thought the division between rich and poor was bad enough in Britain, then people should take a look at the Arab world. Contrast the wealth of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with that of the poorest. It is an obscene division. What should be

happening is that international pressure should be put on the richest nations to use their wealth and influence to deal with the murderous conflicts in the Muslim world, and not fuel the sectarian divisions by financing much of it. And if it means the toughest of economic sanctions to do so, then so be it, oil or no oil. And perhaps the boatloads of illegal immigrants who have struggled their way risking their lives should be

be ashamed of itself. The BBC claims to be independent, but many of its left-leaning journalists and researchers don´t know the meaning of the word. Nigel Farage found himself debating against four opponents on the left - red Ed, even redder Sturgeon, Plaid Cymru and Green leaders, both very much left leaning. A formidable task in itself, but when the audience was also skewed against him, it was impossible for him and

put on planes and boats and sent straight to Saudi and the UAE and let them deal with the crises they have helped cause. Because if we don´t do something drastic and stop the influx of Muslim immigrants into Europe, before too long we all will be having to pray to Mecca, women will be fully veiled, alcohol will be banned and we´ll all have to recite from the Koran, or face execution! LAST week´s BBC election debate hosted by David Dimbleby was a total disgrace and the national broadcaster, paid for by licence fee payers, should

in the circumstances he held up incredibly well. The audience was clearly on the side of more public spending and strongly defensive of immigration. And heaven help Britain if that´s the pattern for the next five years. The audience was chosen by a polling organisation - ICM, and initially the BBC refused to disclose the make-up of the audience. The BBC eventually released figures which showed that of the 200-strong audience, about 58 were Conservative or UKIP supporters, while about 102 backed left-leaning parties – Labour, the Lib Dems, SNP, Plaid Cymru or

the SNP. The rest – 40 – described themselves as undecided. Hardly representative of the current polls, which puts Conservative and UKIP together at 47% and Labour on 34% with Lib Dems at about 7%. Two weeks ago I wrote that if British voters were stupid enough to give Labour the edge in the polls, Britain would in effect be ruled by the SNP - and England would be drained dry by an ever demanding Scotland. In effect M i l i b a n d would be Sturgeon´s puppet on a string. The BBC also refused to disclose how many people complained about the debate. I think they should be made to - it could be most interesting. I AM delighted that once again the police and the C r o w n Prosecution Service have made total fools of themselves going to war on journalists over chequebook journalism, which I personally detested. Fleet Street journalists would descend on us when a national story broke and flashed the cash to loosen tongues and we provincial reporters just couldn´t compete. Chequebook journalism is a pain when it´s used to get tittle-tattle stories from celebs, but it can uncover stories which are very much in the public interest - perhaps revealing the wrongdoings of the rich and famous, politicians, and bankers: facts about them they would

love to keep secret. It´s been used to loosen the tongues of civil servants, the police, top brass in the armed services and NHS bosses - bringing corruption and wrongdoings into the public domain. And that´s why officialdom hates it so much and why the police and CPS fell over themselves to take national newspaper journalists to court over allegedly making illegal payments to public officials. These cases followed the investigation into phone-hacking, which was a despicable practice carried out by extremely few journalists and investigators. That prosecution was totally justified, but the police and CPS thought they were on a roll and went on to spend millions of pounds investigating chequebook journalism. It´s something that has been going on for generations and an Old Bailey jury decided that it was fair game and threw out the prosecutions against three journalists, with CPS prosecutions being dropped against nine more journalists. But the CPS is to continue charges against journalists alleged to have paid police officers, and public officials are also to face trial for receiving payments. Bob Satchwell, executive director of the Society of Editors, said the investigation had been an "incredible fiasco" which had caused "huge reputational damage" to the British press and "even greater human costs" to journalists who had faced prosecution. He said journalists had been "treated like drug dealers and terrorists" for offences which would have carried shorter sentences than the time they spent awaiting trials. Mr Satchwell said the operation was "an affront to a democratic country". I totally agree.

COLD CASES THAT DON’T CLOSE

Something that has always interested me is true crime. I used to have lots of books on the subject but when I moved to Spain, I gave many of them to the local charity shop. I did though keep a few, along with my books on forensic science and various other topics, nothing to do with my previous job! My interest in crime is mainly in how cases are solved; how the perpetrator was caught; and the sentence they were given by the full force of the law. I am not a fan of mysteries and things that cannot be explained but I do have an interest in unsolved murders. There are many victims who will never get the justice they deserve and many families left to grieve not only a huge loss, normally of a young person, but also looking over their shoulders suspiciously at everyone who they see, wondering if they were the one to snuff out their loved one´s life.

I say young people because I was browsing some unsolved murders on the internet and couldn´t help noticing the ages of the victims. Yes, there were a few older people mentioned but the vast majority were young people, some not even making double figures, and it brings into question why is our youth targeted by killers who for some reason are never discovered. Surely nothing can hurt more than the loss of a child, but when that loss comes about at the hands of someone else, then the pain must cut incredibly deep. I could not imagine losing my boy to illness but at least if a child dies in hospital, they are surrounded by their loved ones, in a comfortable bed in a room filled with love. On the other hand, when a fledgling life is snuffed out by intolerable cruelty and pain there can be no comfort. It must be the hardest

way to lose someone close and I absolutely do not know where parents and siblings find the strength to continue the daily grind of living after experiencing such devastation. However they do manage to live, hour to hour, day by day until one day surviving becomes a little easier, although the pain must live with them until their dying day. At least when the perpetrator is caught, there is a closure

and knowledge that at least the killer cannot strike again and tear apart another family. So what does one do when their loved one is taken away from them by another and that person is never caught? I am sure from reading about such cases that the family never give up. There is always an effort to find out how to discover the identity of the one person they hate more than anything in the world. There is an

on-going reality that this has happened and a never ending hope that one day there will be an end. There have been many high profile murders and a few of those have remained unsolved or there is doubt as to the validity of the conviction, such as Jill Dando and Suzy Lamplugh, but enough is known about those cases and there is nothing new I can add to that which you have probably read or heard about the case. Although there is one thing about Jill Dando that I can share with you as Jill was from Weston-super-Mare, the town where I grew up, and she went to the same hospital radio station that I volunteered at, although she was there slightly before me, that is about my only claim to fame as dubious as it is! I remember where I was when I heard of her murder and it sent shock waves through the police sta-

tion where I was working, and it remains a thorn in the side of the Metropolitan Police as there is now no one serving time for killing the popular TV personality. The cases I will write about in the next couple of weeks are ones that may never be solved however with the benefits of advances in forensics, especially with DNA testing, there has to always be hope that someone can be brought to justice, at least those within the past 30-40 years. So, next week I´m going to start with a case of a young girl tragically murdered for no apparent reason not far from where I was living over 40 years ago. Until then I want to remind you that violent crime is very rare, there is no need to feel scared or nervous, just be sensible but live your life free of worry for something that will more than likely never happen to you. Don´t have nightmares!

Spanish 169 I hope you are getting on well with the phrasal verbs I had last week, and this time we are carrying on with a quite tricky part of learning a language. I am going to continue with my list of phrasal verbs in Spanish and English, some of them in Spanish are of course just verbs without the preposition which is what makes it a phrasal verb, however as there are less phrasal verbs in Spanish and it´s always useful to know how to make phrasal verbs in Spanish I have included English phrasal verbs with Spanish verbs as last week. So we carry on with: Go away – irse, marcharse – are you going away for the summer? ¿vas a ir este verano? Go out – salir (por la calle) – I always go out on Saturday night, siempre salgo los sábados

Friday 24th April 2015

por la noche, Go up – subir , the price of tobacco went up in January, el precio de tabaco subió en eneroLook for – buscar I looked for my gñasses everywhere before I found them! Busqué mis gafas por todas partes antes de encontarlas! Take care/watch out! – tener cuidado, watch out! There´s a car coming, ¡Ten cuidado!, hay un coche que viene, put in – meter, introducir Put one euro in the machine for a cup of coffee, mete un euro en la máquina para un café, hang on/hold on – esperar – hold on for a minute as Paul will be right back, espera un minuto, Pablo vuelva enseguida, hang up (telephone) – colgar, the customer hung up on me! ¡El cliente me colgó! Let in – dejar entrar, I opened the door and let the cat in, abrí la puerta y dejé entrar el gato, look after – cuidar, will you look

I hope that you are enjoying learning Spanish and all the various intricacies of the language, I know that it´s not easy to learn a new language, however it is worth all the hard work when you can speak to people and communicate with them. If you are not interested in sitting exams and gaining qualifications, then the best you can do

is be understood, making mistakes can be acceptable if the person you are talking to can understand you, of course, the more correct your Spanish is the better you will be understood and you should strive for perfect Spanish every time. Take it step by step,

poco a poco, and you will see that you gain knowledge and confidence and are soon chatting away with the natives. Have a great week, I´ll be back with more interesting Spanish next Thursday….a day early with the May Day holiday being on a Friday!

TRELI ON THE TELLY FIGURE IT OUT with ALEX TRELINSKI

Channel Four’s glorious epic drama Indian Summers came to the end of its first series last Sunday night, and I’ve thoroughly loved every minute of it, led by Julie Walters’ scheming club owning character. The last two episodes saw many strands brought together and I can’t wait for the second series next year, though despite critical acclaim and big international sales, the UK audience has shown little interest. After massive promotion, the first episode got two and a half million viewers, but subsequent figures have shown a measly return of just three-quarters of a million. Perhaps being pitched against the BBC’s barnstorming revival of Poldark

didn’t help, but it’s also another indicator of UK viewers being dismissive of quality drama in an era where the lowest common denominator is becoming more prevalent. The more mainstream The Musketeers and Mr.Selfridge barely broke three million viewers this year but are kept going by overseas buyers, whilst some US imports have disappeared without trace. Take the brilliant Cold War spy drama, The Americans, which ITV screened the first two seasons of. Despite valiant attempts by the commercial channel, the show couldn’t even muster one million viewers per episode, and they had no alternative but to drop it. Over in the States, its third series has brought large critical acclaim and has been renewed for a fourth run, but we don’t even have the likes of Sky buying it for what would be an appreciative audience for screening on

say, Sky Atlantic. The biggest bit of stupidity in recent years was over Breaking Bad, which had the first series shown on Five USA, before it dumped it, citing a lack of viewers. Lo and behold, it then became, alongside Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and The Walking Dead, one

of the most talked about US shows in years, with UK viewers having to subscribe to Netflix to see what the fuss was all about, with a finale in 2013 that made international news. Thank heavens then the new Channel Five owned service called Spike,

launched last week with a nightly screening of Breaking Bad (and the best audience figures for Spike), and it’s fantastic, as I checked out the first three episodes last weekend. It’s quirky and different, with some laugh out moments mixed in with the shocking, along with a great “odd” pairing of Bryan Cranston’s chemistry teacher going into the drugs business with Aaron Paul’s junkie character. I won’t go into anymore but I’m hooked (pardon the pun) and the plaudits and a w a r d s seemed to be very well deserved for

the 60 episode run. The fifth series of Game of Thrones looks great on Sky Atlantic, with Monday’s second episode going up a few gears after a somewhat sedate opening last week. Of greater concern is the last batch of episodes of Mad Men, also on Sky Atlantic. They were shot “back to back” with the last series in 2014, yet they seem to be a mile away from the usual quality. The first two episodes have been a muddled mess leaving me with a hollow feeling. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the remaining five instalments don’t soil the memory of what was one of the sharpest scripted shows of the last decade. Jon Hamm’s character of Don Draper deserves a better send-off, yet we are promised a “controversial” ending which has me worried that we are going to be left disappointed.

RICHARD CAVENDER

Bluemoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Doug was having issues opening up .pdf files ADVICE: : Douglas was having problems playing DVD’s from emails

Q

Hi Richard, sorry to worry you again, but can you advise me how to reinstate my settings, so that I can download attachments to any email sent to me. This was OK a couple of days ago, but I now find that when I click on the pdf attachment to any email sent to me, nothing happens!!!! Please advise, as I have some important documents to download, but am unable to do so!!! Thanks, Doug

A

Hi Doug, you should be able to do this by downloading and installed Adobe PDF Reader, you can get a copy of it free from https://get.adobe.com/reader - remember to untick any “optional offer” items that you don’t want to be installed at the same time..

ADVICE: Sheila wanted to know how to import her photos from her camera into Windows

Q A

Hi Richard, how do I get pictures from my camera onto the computer? I used to have the instructions but they seem to have vanished. I have the lead from the camera to the computer but after that I haven't a clue. Sheila

HHi Richard, I read your columns, in the Courier with great interest, & have solved many of my problems. However, I have Windows 8.1 on my "ADVENT Monza T100 Red" lap top, & I have a problem: my disc drive plays a CD OK, but does not play a DVD. Can you advise how to set up this drive to play DVD's, as well? I would very much appreciate your help. Regards Doug

Q A

Hi Doug, what happens when you try to play DVD's in your laptop?

Update

A

Nothing happens, it shows the DVD title, but it does not play. I have gone to auto play, but still no response.

Hi Douglas, it sounds to me like you simply don’t have the software installed to play your DVD’s – Windows Media Player will do this for you, or you can download some free software to play them, I recommend http://www.videolan.org as a good alterna-

tive. Hi Richard, Many thanks for the link, to VLC Player. This works excellently. Thank you once again.

Hi Sheila, here is a link to a page that should help you… http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/get-pictures-cameracomputer#1TC=windows-7

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternatively why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

normal fixtures of the vehicle, then it qualifies as such. As such, in the interests of safety, anything carried on a vehicle must not drag fully or partially, fall or move dangerously, interfere with vehicle stability, produce noise, dust

Anything which is placed outside the vehicle when it is moving will produce drag. Cars and road vehicles are designed through extensive testing in wind tunnels in order for them to minimise this. Quite clearly, if a flag is of a large enough size, it will produce considerable drag. It may well interfere with the view of lights, number plates and other fixtures, and could blow or fall into the path of other road users, and is a risk in terms of becoming loose or entangles in either the vehicle carrying it, or others. Therefore, quite clearly, large flags are not allowed. However, there are smaller, purpose built flags which are permitted. These are often seen attached to the windows of vehicles, or sometimes as part of the main structure, such as one might see in a Presidential limousine. Similarly, there are other accessories available which can be fitted to a vehicle safely, such as covers for the wing mirrors, so long as the active view of the mirror is not obscured. A flag draped or tied across the bonnet or roof, or any part of the vehicle, would not be permitted, nor would covers to the sun visors, which could interfere with the visibility of the driver. There are some exceptions to this rule when a road is closed to normal traffic, such as when an organised parade is taking place, at which time, larger flags are permitted. If you do wish to display a flag on your car during normal driving conditions, take into account the size of the flag as there are no

IT'S ALL GREEK

For decades, Greek food in the UK was rubbish. As a Greek Cypriot and long-time reviewer of Hellenic restaurants, I got used to stodgy flagstones of oily moussaka, curiously eggy hummus and halloumi you could cut into circles and top pencils with. At their best, the restaurants offering this stolid, carb-heavy tedium were so chintzy they could have doubled as doily museums. At their worst, their idea of “cooked to order” was “scooping it from under the battered saveloys in the halo-

gen heater”. But that’s all changing. In Lancashire’s family-run Olive Tree Brasserie (“Greek cuisine … with modern twists”), local kale is served with panfried cod, and salads combine kefalotiri cheese with hotsmoked Goosnargh duck breast and caramelised apples. In London’s Greek tapas joint Opso, there are souvlaki sliders, cheeses served with homemade rhubarb jam and slow-cooked lamb shank pepped up with lemongrass. Start smashing

the plates here and you’re committing a culinary atrocity. Brits are pouncing on it as greedily as a Georgian lord who has just noticed some unguarded marble frescoes. The Olive Tree’s rapid expansion plans across the north involve 10 restaurants in the next five years. Last May, mini-chain The Real Greek opened its first branch outside London, in Windsor, and a Southampton location is now being mooted. And in the capital, not only have a handful of modern Greek restaurants

More than a Fish Shop

Our Plaice Fish and Chips is now in its 7th year building a solid reputation for the finest Fish and Chips using the finest quality products. There is a vast menu including, Icelandic Cod, Haddock, Plaice and Rock Skate which are all cooked to order. With a choice of Homemade Pies, Sausages, Savaloys, Chicken, Burgers and Veggie Burgers there is something for everyone. Paul the owner said, “we have been serving our local community for a long time now, all of whom have become more than just customers. We have a large spacious restaurant which is clean and comfy with a summer terrace”. Situated near the Police Station and Tourist Information Centre on Urb La Marina, Our Plaice Fish and Chips is the place to go - you won’t be disappointed! Menu of the Day is served from 12noon till 5pm and includes...Fish and Chips, Mushy Peas, Bread and Butter all for just 6.50E! For more information or takeaway orders ring 966 795 418. Open from 12noon till 10pm Monday to Saturday.

THE MODERN RESTAURANTS SERVING MORE THAN MOUSSAKA started proferring innovative, pomegranate-seed studded takes on horiatiki [Greek salad] in the past couple of years, but the oregano-salted, feta-topped fries from such food trucks as I Should Be Souvlaki are propelling Greek food into London’s trendobsessed street food scene. It is no coincidence that this is happening at the same time that Greek bank vaults are starting to look like abandoned warehouses. In the past couple of years, there has been something of a culi-

nary revolution in Athens, including the opening of Funky Gourmet, a twoMichelin-starred restaurant co-owned by two ex-El Bulli chefs – and the 19th-best restaurant in the world, according to TripAdvisor. But with the highest unemployment rate in the EU and Greece’s talented youth leaving faster than an audience at a Spice Girls musical, it doesn’t exactly scream: “Plough your cash into our economy!” Hence a number of the most exciting foodie openings

in London are all Greek to us. Athens-founded restaurant Estiatorio Milos follows up its New York, Las Vegas, Miami and Montreal branches with a Regent Street opening in July. Athenian grill Suvlaki opens in May in Soho, and the rose syrup-topped take on saganaki cheese offered at funky West End deli-restaurant Ergon, which opened recently, has already proven a hit at its six branches in Greece. Only a fool would beware Greeks bearing these kinds of gifts.

HOW GARLIC BECAME THE KING OF THE BRITISH KITCHEN

This week saw National Garlic Day. The allium – such a staple in kitchens the world over – is as common as salt, and lacking the exoticism it once had in the UK. As recently as 30 years ago in many parts of Britain, cooking with garlic was considered

“foreign” or eccentric. After several centuries of neglect, garlic reappeared during the Victorian era when French tastes were seen as the height of sophistication. But it fell out of favour during the second world war: food historian

Ivan Day thinks garlic was seen as “foreign muck” by the generation of men and women living off bully beef and reconstituted egg - “they got a taste for simplicity”. Natasha Edwards, who runs the Isle of Wight’s Garlic Farm remembers the 1980s. “We started the farm when garlic wasn’t that popular. None of my friends knew what it was and those who did thought it was foreign and gave you bad breath,” she recalls. “But garlic’s been on the Isle of Wight for years. My granny got our first bulb from one of three French fighters in Cowes during the war who missed garlic so much they asked a resistance fighter to fly some out to them. Granny planted it from him.” Have a flick through a 1950s recipe book and you can see where the UK gets its reputation for bland food – it’s all pork chops with boiled carrots and cauliflower. Garden

herbs slowly started to appear – softer flavourings such as dill and thyme subtly flavouring meats – but there’s barely a hint of the bulb most home cooks today swear by. It was making appearances in some circles a decade later though, and not just in London’s French restaurants. Day remembers the fake salamis that became popular in the 1960s: “They were so strong with garlic but they weren’t real salamis – not as we know them now,” he recalls. “At first, most people were rude about garlic, and then, after the war – as more people began to travel – it gradually became more popular.” Fast forward and it is being used more than ever – even in sweets. Paul A Young, one of Britain’s master chocolatiers, developed a caramelised garlic chocolate for Halloween in 2014: the clove is roasted and combined with a ganache. And it is celebrated for more than just it’s heady aroma and taste. Arnaud Stevens, chef at Sixtyone thinks that garlic has become more popular in the UK because we’ve become more health conscious than ever. “Garlic supposedly lowers cholesterol, is great for blood pressure and strengthens the arteries.” (Some studies have indeed suggested that it may lower cholesterol, although other health benefits are disputed.) Fergus Henderson remembers well how “the British literally woke up and smelt the garlic. Gone are the days of Carry On films with Sid James as Henry VIII complaining of his French wife Katherine of Aragon smelling of garlic.” As Henderson has it, “now, the musk of garlic on the breath is the musk of a good lunch.” And that’s something we can all agree on.

WOMAN DIES AFTER TAKING 'DIET PILLS' BOUGHT OVER INTERNET Police in Shropshire have issued a warning after the death of a woman who took “diet pills” bought over the internet. Doctors were unable to save Eloise Aimee Parry, 21, from Shrewsbury, who took the tablets believed to contain the highly toxic industrial chemical dinitrophenol, also known as DNP. Her mother, Fiona Parry, said her daughter had burned up from the inside and her metabolism “exploded like TNT” after taking the pills. She said her daughter began feeling unwell at about lunchtime on 12 April and drove herself to Royal Shrewsbury hospital, where she explained to doctors what she had taken. She said there was no great panic because “[Eloise] was still completely lucid and with it. At this point she still seemed to be OK.” That changed when doctors carried out a toxicology report that revealed “how dire her situation was”. “The drug was in her system, there was no antidote, two tablets was a lethal dose and she had taken eight,” Fiona

Parry said in a tribute posted online. “As Eloise deteriorated, the staff in A&E did all they could to stabilise her. “As the drug kicked in and started to make her metabolism soar, they attempted to cool her down, but they were fighting an uphill battle. She was literally burning up from within. When she stopped breathing, they put her on a ventilator and carried on fighting to save her. “When her heart stopped they couldn’t revive her. She had crashed. She had taken so much DNP that the consequences were inevitable. They never stood a chance of saving her. She burned and crashed.” Parry died the same day. Her mother added that that she would be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Speaking on Sky News, she said: “Once it’s in your system, there is nothing that will get it out again. Please don’t take this drug. If you’re somebody that makes the mistake that my daughter did, and takes too many of these pills, the doctors won’t be able to get them out of your system. It’s an awful way to die. I wouldn’t wish it

on anybody.” Ch Insp Jennifer Mattinson said: “We are undoubtedly concerned over the origin and sale of these pills, and are working with partner agencies to establish where they were bought from and how they were advertised. “The coroner’s report will establish the exact cause of Eloise’s death, but we urge the public to be incredibly careful when purchasing medicine or supplements over the internet. Substances from unregistered websites could put your health at risk as they could be extremely harmful, out-of-date or fake.” DNP was first used in French munition factories during the first world war to make explosives. The chemical became popular among people trying to lose weight, including those with eating disorders and bodybuilders, after clinical trials revealed it can result in the loss of up to 7kg in a week. It does this by accelerating a person’s metabolism to a “dangerously fast level”, the NHS Choices website explains. Side-effects include skin lesions and cataracts and in some cases people have “literally cooked to death” after taking a fatal dose. DNP was designated as “extremely dangerous and not fit for human consumption” in 1938 and is regulated by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). It is not an illegal substance, because it is used as a pesticide. Websites offer the drug without restriction, sometimes in capsule form, with only a clause stating that they do not take responsibility for how customers administer it. Eloise Parry’s death is the fifth in the UK to be attributed to DNP, and more than 60 people worldwide have died as a result of taking it. In 2013, Sarah Houston, a 23year-old student, was found dead in her bedroom after taking DNP. Houston’s parents, both doctors, called for an end to the “morally repugnant” practice of selling the drug in capsule form. Public Health England said it was working with other agencies to raise awareness of DNP among healthcare professionals and the public. “DNP is not licensed as a medicine in the UK and is classified as a hazardous chemical as a result of its toxicity,” it said in a statement. “Adverse health effects are more common after taking high doses but severe adverse effects can occur when the drug is taken in the doses recommended on websites or by suppliers.”

QI

SMOKE AND DRINK. WHAT´S THE BEST WAY TO DETOX?

A

The tendency for most smokers is to completely neglect their health in a fatalistic ‘he that is down needs fear no fall’ kind of attitude. Every adult knows that smoking or drinking excessively is detrimental to health. Smoking in particular has been associated with negative health consequences for the longest time and yet this hasn’t deterred people from doing so. And even though cigarettes have been linked to a number of chronic health issues, there really is no way of knowing who will develop these health issues, and who wouldn’t. I know people who have smoked all their lives and are absolutely healthy

and others who have never done so, and struggle to be healthy. Not long ago, a woman of 77 came to me for a routine scan. She was in good health, but wanted to know if she could do more to improve

organs were in a good state and even more interesting was the fact that she had very little contaminants or toxins present in her organs. Of course her case is unusual as the scan results of

mercury and cadmium, as well as mycotoxins, pesticides and fungicides. Alcohol is broken down in the liver to Aldehyde, the compound responsible for the addictive and harmful effects of alcohol.

things since she smoked a pack of cigarette a day, and had been doing so since she was 15. What’s interesting is that the scan result confirmed that her systems and

most smokers show high levels of toxins. And the main danger from alcohol and cigarettes is the buildup of these toxins which are mainly heavy metals, such as lead,

This aldehyde is further converted to acetate, which is in turn converted to fatty acids that cause the alcoholic disease- fatty liver. Cigarette smoking introduces up to

4000 different toxic substances into the body, and many of these cause cancer. Cigarette smoking also leaches nutrients especially Vitamin C from the body. Therefore smokers and people who drink alcohol regularly need to eliminate these toxins from their systems. This can be done with Pectasol – one of the most effective detox agents available today. Pectasol is the only substance taken by mouth that binds to toxins and heavy metals without affecting other nutrients in the body. Clinical studies have shown up to a 500% increase in the excretion of some of the toxins. Pectasol brings about a total body cleanse. Pectasol is available from MedB. 6 weeks course for 63. 75 Euros. WHEAT IS NOT THE FOOD YOU THINK IT IS

You may be shocked to discover that 2 slices of whole grain wheat bread will raise your blood sugar level higher than 6 teaspoons of pure white sugar. The story of the strain of wheat we now consume starts sometime in the 1970s. Scientists for good reason wanted to improve on the existing wheat plant, to improve on its yield and ability to withstand adverse weather. Before then, wheat was a different plant. This new strain of wheat was never tested for safety before it was introduced to us as food. We now know that the genetic changes in the newer strains of wheat accounts for their dangerously higher levels of toxins. Wheat is a grain and generally grains are poor quality foods because they contain many toxic proteins including – Glutenin and Gliadin. Glutenin is like glue and gives wheat its doughy, twisty nature. Gliadin is

the cause of coeliac disease. It is also an appetite stimulant, and the cause of obesity epidemic facing many societies. Wheat is also recognised as a major cause of heart disease. It increases levels of small particle LDL (low density lipoprotein) which inflames arteries. Recently it was discovered that gliadin protein in wheat plays an even more sinister role in the body by uncoupling tightly bound intestinal cells to allow toxins into the body. Wheat also contains a weird complex carb known as amylo-pectin A, which causes unhealthy increases in blood sugar levels .So what benefits await us when we commence a wheat free diet? Well, without the appetite stimulation of wheat, most people notice dramatic weight-loss, especially a reduction in waist line. Diabetics will also notice

that their blood sugar levels are better controlled and they require less medication. Joint pains vanish or ease off considerably. If you have a chronic illness, perhaps you should stop eating wheat for 3 months and see how you feel. For a full body diagnostic scan call 965071745

Horoscopes Aries March 21-April 20 The annual new Moon in Aries this weekend helps you to take stock of what you have achieved in recent months and work out where you want to go from here. Events midweek also bring financial issues into sharper focus. With your ruler, Mars, in charge, you can break a recent deadlock and usher in a more successful, prosperous era.

Taurus April 21-May 21 Something or someone from your past could preoccupy you, but with the Sun and Mars in Taurus in the month ahead, the importance of being open to new people and ideas is stressed. A conversation later in the week could revolutionise your outlook on your domestic situation. Think hard before you act.

Gemini May 22-June 21 With persuasive Venus in your sign, you can, at last, afford to ask a leading question, so do not feel you should leave certain things unsaid or let others make the running. With so much action in your chart’s most psychic zone, you have a big advantage over your potential rivals, so take full advantage of the planetary pattern in the week ahead.

Cancer June 22-July 23 A conversation with a friend midweek is due to make you see how strong your hand is in a certain situation. You may feel that what you want is not within reach, but do not let a chance to break the ice with someone pass by. It might be easier to win them over than you imagined. Trust your intuition on financial matters later in the week.

By Pandora Leo July 24-August 23 This weekend’s new Moon falls in your chart’s zone of hopes, dreams and ambitions. It could bring unexpected changes in your outlook and your plans, so do not make a premature commitment or try to look too far ahead. Friendship, romance and social life are linked from Wednesday, when optimistic Jupiter in Leo eases recent tensions.

Virgo August 24-September 23 You have the insight, energy and motivation to get closer to a personal goal this week. Wednesday’s meeting between the fiery action planet Mars and your ruler, Mercury, puts you in an almost unassailable position. Do not hesitate to ask for what you want from those concerned. A few well-chosen words could change many things.

Libra September 24-October 23 The annual new Moon in the area of your skies that rules your love life and your closest bonds with others could throw unexpected light on something that has puzzled you in recent weeks. Do not hesitate to take decisive action, or let others feel that they can call the tune. Your ruler, Venus, also gives you extra powers of persuasion now.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 The time has come to let down your defences and to show your real feelings about something that closely concerns you. Wednesday’s powerful link between the extroverted Mars and your secretive, mysterious ruler Pluto is due to help you find the words to do so. Do not let this chance to bring about a major breakthrough pass you by.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 A more adventurous and fulfilling phase in your private life begins this week. The emphasis is on exploring new horizons, and on putting your own interests first. You can push through some important changes linked to your career if you clear the decks midweek. What matters is being decisive. Give yourself more freedom to manoeuvre.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 A new creative scheme has the stars behind it in the weeks to come, so do not let advice from friends or colleagues undermine your confidence or slow you down. Wednesday’s link between dynamic Mars and the wealth planet, Pluto, in your sign, should help you make the opening move. Be prepared to make some major changes.

Aquarius January 21 - February 19 Pushing through important changes linked to your home life should be your priority this week, when the action planet, Mars, gives you extra drive and motivation. If you are diplomatic, you can sidestep opposition to your plans from someone close, so do not say too much too soon about an issue that preoccupies you. Less is more.

Pisces February 20 - March 20 The new Moon in your chart’s financial sector helps you focus on new ways to ease your cash flow and draw up constructive plans. It seems the time has come to make your needs and feelings clear to someone close. A conversation later in the week could make you see how strong your hand is. Take a subtle, roundabout approach.

Golfing Trivia • The Gentleman Golfer’s of Leith (1744) was the first club and was formed to promote an annual competition with a silver golf club as a prize. • The first golf course outside Scotland was Royal Blackheath near London, in 1766. However, it is believed that golf was played there since 1608. • Tom Watson won the 1977 USPGA Championship, 1975 Open Championship and 1977 Open Championship with clubs that were later to be deemed non-conforming to R&A and USGA Rules and regulations.

A LOGICAL TIE UP

• The term “birdie” comes from an American named Ab Smith. While playing in 1899, he played what he called a “bird of a shot”, which became a birdie over time. • Golf was banned in Scotland from 1457 to 1502 to ensure citizens would not waste their time when preparing for the English invasion. • The driver swing speed of an average lady golfer is 62 mph; 96 mph for an average LPGA professional; 84 mph for an average male golfer; 108 mph for an average PGA Tour professional; 130 for Tiger Woods; and 148-152 mph for the National Longest Drive Champion. • Long before the invention of tees, golfers played off hand built piles of sand. That all changed when tees were invented, gaining popularity in the 1920’s. • Charging 500 dollars for an 18 hole round, Las Vegas’ Shadow Creek Golf Course is the most expensive public golf course in the USA. • Phil Mickelson, who plays left handed, is actually right handed. He learned to play by mirroring his father’s golf swing, and he has used left handed clubs ever since. • 125,000 golf balls a year are lost in the water surrounding the famous 17th hole of the Stadium Course at Sawgrass in the USA. • “Caddy” comes from the French word cadet pronounced cad-DAY.

The European Senior Tour and Prostate Cancer UK have agreed a groundbreaking initiative for the charity to become the new title sponsor of the Scottish Senior Open. In an innovative move, the charity will put its name to this wellestablished event on the Senior Tour, with the primary aim of the partnership to raise money for the charity and to increase awareness of prostate cancer amongst golfers at the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open, which takes place at Archerfield Links Golf Club, at the end of this August. More than 40,000 men in the UK, are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, making it the most common type of cancer among men. Men over the age of 50 are more at risk of developing it - the same age that players become eligible to join the Senior Tour, making the association a natural one for both parties. Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Senior Tour, said: “Prostate Cancer will affect one in eight men in the UK during their lifetime, so clearly it is something that our membership and their friendship

groups should be aware of. We hope we can help raise awareness to a key demographic and at the same time provide funds to support the charity’s good work.” “We have seen the magnificent achievements of the Men United campaign across football, rugby league and many other sports, and we hope this relationship will help golf play its part in making a difference in men’s health. The tournament will be a Pro-Am format, similar to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on The European Tour, and we hope this unique format will allow individuals and sponsors the opportunity to participate in the tournament to help deliver this important message to a wide audience.” Prostate Cancer UK’s Director of Fundraising, Mark Bishop said: “Golf is a great fit for us at Prostate Cancer UK. From tee to green, it offers men that opportunity to talk openly and frankly with their mates outside the shackles of everyday life. Men United is about men joining together to fight a common opponent – prostate cancer – and do

something great together to beat it. One man dies every hour from this disease, but it’s been proven by taking this issue to sporting venues up and down the land that we are starting to make a difference. Our message is spreading throughout golf and to be able to work side by side with the game’s primary organisation on these shores offers a fantastic opportunity to further drive change.” Since it was launched 12 months ago, Men United has caught the imagination for change in men’s health with more than 200,000 people signing up to pledge support. Men from all walks of life, from footballers to lawyers, and politicians to plumbers, have formed a growing army, raising funds to find the answers for the future through research and supporting men now. The Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open will help further increase awareness of the campaign and the charity. With a prize fund of £250,000, the tournament will have a field of 60 European Senior Tour professionals, who will play alongside an amateur partner for the first two rounds before the professionals contest the final round on

Saturday, August 29. Archerfield Links previously hosted the Ladies Scottish Open from 2010 to 2014, while it also hosts an annual charity Pro-Am event each June in conjunction with Senior Tour player Ian Woosnam. The Fidra Links course, which will stage the Senior Open, was designed by Senior Tour Committee Chairman, David J Russell, one of Ian Woosnam’s assistant captains at the 2006 Ryder Cup, who is also one of Archerfield Links’ two Touring Professionals, along with Catriona Matthew. This year’s Scottish Senior Open will be the 23rd staging of the event. First played at Royal Aberdeen in 1993, the tournament has also been held at Newmachar, Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club, The Roxburghe, and Fairmont St Andrews, which was the venue for the past six years. Former Scottish Senior Open champions include Tommy Horton (1993, 1997), Brian Huggett (1995), Neil Coles (1999), Sam Torrance (2006), and Barry Lane (2010, 2011), while Englishman Mark Davis claimed his maiden Senior Tour title at Fairmont St Andrews last year.

JAVIER’S LATE SHOW BRAZILLIAN DOUBLE REAL MADRID 1

ATLETICO MADRID 0 (agg 1-0)

Javier Hernandez scored an 88th-minute winner for Real Madrid to settle a tense Champions League quarter-final against neighbours Atletico in the Bernabeu on Wednesday. The visitors frustrated Real for the majority of the match, but the game opened up when Atletico's Arda Turan was sent off in the 75th minute. With the game heading for extra-time after the first leg ended 0-0, Cristiano Ronaldo drove forward and squared for Hernandez to slot home. The semi-final draw is made today(Friday).

BARCELONA 2

PARIS ST-GERMAIN 0 (Agg 5-1)

Neymar's two goals saw Barcelona coast past Paris St-Germain and into a third successive Champions League semi-final. PSG, needing to overhaul a 3-1 deficit from the first leg, were torn apart by a dazzling Andres Iniesta run and assist for Neymar to score the first. The Brazilian striker headed in his second before the break to open up a four-goal aggregate lead. And Barca were rarely troubled in the second half as they pursue a first Champions League title since 2011.

LIONEL’S LANDMARK RONALDO RULES AGAIN BARCELONA 2

VALENCIA 0

Lionel Messi scored his 400th goal for Barcelona last Saturday to round off a nervy win over Valencia to keep them two points clear of Real Madrid at the top of table. The Argentinian scored with the last kick of the game after Luis Suarez had opened the scoring inside the first minute of the match, but an impressive Valencia side were unlucky not to take more from the game, and Dani Parejo passed up an opportunity to equalise in the first half from the penalty spot. However, Barcelona made it to half-time unscathed and then produced a solid second-half performance to take the three points, and are away tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) to Espanyol.

REAL MADRID 3

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 50th goal of the season to help Real Madrid bag all three points and to keep the heat on La Liga leaders Barcelona. Ronaldo crossed for Sergio Ramos to put Real ahead but then hit the post with a second-half penalty. Ronaldo was involved again as James Rodriguez made it 2-0 before Juanmi pulled a goal back for Malaga. Ronaldo made it 3-1 from Javier Hernandez's low cross and has now hit 50 goals in his last five seasons. Real are away to Celta Vigo this Sunday night.

HAIL JONATHAS

Jonathas de Jesus again proved his worth to Elche by scoring the only goal as his side beat Real Sociedad at home on Monday night to move six points away from the relegation zone. That advantage is tempered somewhat by the knowledge that they are away to the champions Atletico Madrid tomorrow

(Saturday). The Brazilian pounced on an error by Markel Bergara in the 18th minute to score his 10th goal of the season and Real were unable to respond against a determined Elche side who played with more energy and intensity than the visitors throughout. This was a game of few chances but the

Ilicitanos deserved their victory, which followed last week's 2-0 win at Cordoba and sees them move up to 14th in the Primera Division, on to 34 points. Elche made the better start but did not create a chance until they opened the scoring. Bergara dithered in defence and slipped after a challenge

MALAGA 1

from an Elche player. The midfielder hurriedly tried to clear the ball from the floor but Jonathas went flying in to dispossess him and with his next touch the Brazilian knocked the ball past Rulli at his near post. The 26-year-old has contributed over a third of Elche's goals this season as well as six assists, and if they

do stay up it will be largely his making. Real struggled to counter Elche's energy and created little in the way of chances, managing a measly two shots on target over the 90 minutes. The Basques were briefly on top at the start of the second half but Elche soon regained their composure and came

closest to scoring the next goal. The ever-present Jonathas broke free down the right and crossed to Chelsea loanee Mario Pasalic, but the midfielder's shot went wide. Nonetheless, there was little danger of Real Sociedad scoring at the other end, and Elche held on comfortably to earn another vital three points.

NOT OVER YET!

Torrevieja’s win over a gutsy Jove side still gives them an outside shout of making it into the end of season play-off’s but the dice needs to roll in their favour. Torry are two points below a priceless slot with four matches left, so nothing is impossible, though they should have netted far more last Sunday than the Rafa Gomez glancing header(pictured) in the 41st minute, fed by a free kick from Adrian. Torry dominated play, spurned chances from inside the box, hit the bar and in general, left their shooting boots in the dressing room: - not for the first time this season! Brani and Cristian were unstoppable on the flanks, unless they were chopped down, which was the

usual Jove solution. But both were guilty of bad misses and Brani failed to deliver accurate passes inside the box after great wing work. On at least one occasion he should have shot on goal instead of looking for someone else to shoulder the responsibility. Defensively Torry were equipped to deal with all Jove had to offer, but an early mistake by Eddy gave the visitors a chance to score within the first minute, but luckily the shot was fired into the side netting. Rafa Gomez and Carrasco led the line with both using their close control and quick thinking to torment a beleaguered Jove back four. The home side were in no mood to concede and could easily have racked up another

high score. New manager Pedreno has won three and drawn the other in his

four match home reign, and needs to keep the winning formula going for

the remaining four games for that slim play-off shot to materialise. They’re

away to Novelda this Sunday, who are one point above them, but Torry will line up in that game minus Alexis who was shown a straight red in the 78th minute in a decision that perplexed everyone. With Torry's other regular centre half Ruben recovering from a recent operation for a collapsed lung, Torry will be calling on all the strength and leadership from captain Jorge, who spent last season with Novelda:- a venue that Torrevieja has never won at!

NOT SO MELLOW YELLOW CD MONTESINOS 1 DEP RAYO ORIHUELA 0

Monte struggled but at least got a win with a lot of unintentional entertainment being provided by a fussy referee who got under the noses of the crowd before even a ball was kicked in anger last Sunday afternoon. The obstinate official turned

up at the ground sporting a yellow shirt which happened to be the same colour as the Orihuela kit, but despite concerns from both teams, the referee stubbornly refused to change it. As he went off to some choice comments at the interval, he reap-

peared for the second half with a green tabard that produced the biggest cheer of the afternoon. As for the football, once again young Saez looked influential for Monte, who started the brighter of the two teams, with a Vaz lobby going wide and a

Macan strike hitting the bar. But the visitors clawed their way back into with a superb goal line clearance by Dario and good saves from Lopez which kept Orihuela from taking the lead. Shortly after the second half started,

Lopez produced the best save of the day to spare Monte’s blushes, but the home side started to take control helped by Saez running the midfield. After wasted chances, Saez produced a quick thinking pass to Carlos who run and then crossed for

Vaz to break the deadlock in what was the only goal of the match against a spirited side who’s performance did not match being second from bottom in the table. Monte’s next match this weekend is away to Cox-based side, CD Borneo.

FRESH CHALLENGES

Seven of Club Natacion Torrevieja’s young swimmers were up against some of the best in the region last Sunday in a league event at Elda’s Muncipal Pool. It was something different for the Torrevieja team with Nicolas Acuna, Georgy Murskiy and younger brother Konstantin, swimming distances and strokes that they never tried before, whilst it was a debut for two of the youngest team members, Leila Hernandez and

Jhoely Cejas. The other two experienced team members Vicky Pigneur and Amy Connolly were challenged with improving upon previous best times in their 200m Individual Medley races, with Amy smashing her best time by a big 19 seconds, whilst Vicky just missed out on making an improvement. This weekend sees Torrevieja’s older swimmers hitting the water at their two day timed control event in Pedrer.

PREMIER PROSPECTS

I nearly bought a house in Bournemouh once. It was a very nice house, but it was right next to the football ground, and my ex-wife and I differed in opinions as whether that was a good thing or not. Then a promotion (mine) happened and the move was off. I think The Cherries were in the old Third Division then, so I and a number of l o y a l Bournemouth fans would have had to wait a long time for the dream of playing in the Premier League. But it now looks as though this may finally be the year for manager Eddie Howe and his terrific team as they sit nervously in equal second place with only two games to go. Watford are top by one point and should be OK on Saturday, away to lowly struggling Brighton who themselves play a key role in the promotion run-in, just avoiding the drop themselves. If successful; the Hornets can finally celebrate promotion at home on the last day by beating Sheffield Wednesday who have had a respectable year, currently in 12th place. Overall Watford look to be favourites to win the

Championship and deserve to go uo after some topsy-turvy seasons in r e c e n t y e a r s .

Bournemouth are locked in the crucial

second place with Middlesborough on 84 points, both teams competing for the automatic second place if Watford don’t falter. Firstly on Saturday Middlesborough travel to 18th placed Fulham on Saturday, and

t h e n finally are home to the same Brighton - whereas Bournemouth don’t play 17th place Bolton until next Monday 27th which controversially should give the Cherries the advantage before playing their final game away to improved Charlton in 10th. This automatic second

place might just go down to goal difference where Middlesborough’s is infinitely inferior to Bournemouth. N.B.here’s an interesting point: should on-loan-fromChelsea,Boro’s19 goal striker Patrick Bamford go back to strikingly-challenged Chelsea where goals are hard to come by these days - or stay and play for Boro in the Premier League – maybe against Chelsea? Norwich might just have a tweet in the above picture, two points behind joint second and third, but the Canaries are chirruping sweetly as they’re definitely in the play-offs, Delia will be pleased Firstly Alec Neill’s lads are away to just-beat-the-drop Rotherham, and finally entertain Fulham at Carrow Road. The final two play-off position should be between ‘there again’ Derby, who dramatically

just lost out last year to QPR, courtesy of a B o b b y Zamora last minute winner. Derby are away to d o o m e d Millwall, then

finishing at home to disappointed FA Cup semi-finalists Reading, licking their Arsenal-inflicted wounds down in 19th place. The rumour mill says Derby boss Steve McClaren is taking over at Newcastle ‘coom end o ‘season, with current Real Madrid number two John Clement said to be taking the reins at Pride Park – will Derby’s play-off result affect the situation? Also finally in the playoffs, Ipswich are only a point behind Derby. Mick McCarthy’s men entertain Nottingham Forest (I’m saying nowt…) on Saturday, the Tractor Boys finishing an excellent season away to 9th placed Blackburn. Brentford and Wolves in 7th and 8th both with 72 points have had memorable seasons, but barring miracles will surely miss out on the play-offs. Down in the Dreaded Drop Department, dealings are much clearer, it’s all been decided. Millwall, Wigan and Blackpool are on their way, Millwall finally falling, after flirting and fighting for years in the secondary division. Wigan’s fall f r o m

Premier grace and FA Cup winners only two years ago is a sad example to everyone of the savage brutality of professional football, and is a big story in itself. Poor old Blackpool were also up there themselves not too long ago, but the Tangerines need a really good sort out in Division

ORIHUELA TAKE TITLE

In Rugby Union, a top of the table Cadete League battle between ITV Orihuela Vega Baja(pictured in yellow kit) and second placedTorrevieja Tigers, saw the Orihuela youngsters clinch

the championship title with a hard-fought 12-7 home win last Saturday. The San Javier Squalos propped up the table, but battled gamely in their 21-12 defeat at midtable Lorca.

One next season. Watch out for some exciting twists and turns as to who finally goes up to the rarefied atmosphere of the Premier League! The bottom three teams will be relegated to League One. Blackpool were the first Football League team to be relegated this season, after fellow strugglers

Rotherham beat Brighton 10 on 6 April. Wigan would have been relegated on Saturday, 18 April had they lost to Brighton, but they won 2-1. They are, however, five points adrift of safety with two m a t c h e s remaining.

Tough luck for Bruce

Hull: Tigers’ supporters are chewing their fingernails as recent results have pushed Steve Bruce’s men to the brink of the DDD. Last year’s FA Cup finalists start their last six matches at reviving Crystal Palace on Saturday, Alan Pardew’s men checked back 2 – 0 against West Brom last week but the Eagles are flying high again in mid-table and look good. Hull then have two huge home games against Liverpool and Arsenal, both who badly need final points themselves for Europe. This is followed by a highly-charged home game to Burnley – a sixpointer if ever there was one. It doesn’t then get any easier with a visit to White Hart Lane to take on Spurs, and then perhaps a cliff-hanging climax against another colossus of a team in recovery, only mighty Man United. What a strange plot for ‘old’ Red Devils’ favourite Steve Bruce to now be managing Hull – what if United put the Tigers down with that game?

FIGHTING CHANCE Leicester? As a lifetime Forest supporter I should hate them, but I reserve that fervour for Derby. Quite simply, the Foxes have had a fabulous roller-coaster of a season for everyone concerned at the King Power Stadium. What a side, Leicester never know when they’re beaten. It will be sad if the East Midlanders are relegated after some great games and goals, anyone remember that epic 5 -3 win over Man United earlier in the season? Mr Cool, manager Nigel Pearson brought his Leicester lads up as Championship Champions by a mile last season, and the man has been under unbelievable pressure since, mostly bottom, and at one time suffering an unnecessary public spat with a ‘supporter’. But the big man has retained his dignity and to the club’s credit his position was kept (just) tenable, while others like Sunderland knee-jerked and fired their man. Amazingly Leicester can now control their own Premier League destiny, as of their six matches left four are at home and three of the six are against fellow relegation fighters. Firstly comes a terrific fixture with Burnley away, then Chelsea at home (gulp!), Newcastle at home, Southampton at home, amazingly away to Sunderland and then that virtual Cup Final at home to QPR - perhaps with everything riding on it, at least for Leicester.

DON’T LOOK DOWN As Chelsea hap-Hazardly hone in on the Premier League champions prize and the fight is on for the alsoran positions, it’s nasty to look down. But it’s hypnotic, you must – go on, lower and lower until you descend right down to the DDD, the Dreaded Drop Department at the bottom of the Prem. There is currently an almighty fight going on to stay up - probably, but not definitely between five clubs. From the bottom up its Burnley and Quaintly Pursuing Relegation who have both played 33 on 26 points, Leicester and Hull both on 28, Sunderland on 29, and these three all

Leicester’s late late show

have played 32. Improving Aston Villa look safe-ish on 32 points, next up is neurotic Newcastle with 35. We all know: fives into three don’t go – so who’s going? After a fantastic first season in the Prem it looks bad for brave Burnley who have played exciting football all season. But the task of staying up now looks beyond the Clarets with their challenging run in – and the first huge test for Sean Dyche’s men is Saturday at home against a recently-jubilant Leicester side, see below, followed by away to West Ham, and then also away to fellow-strugglers Hull, home to Stoke and finally away to Aston Villa – ooh!. I can never understand QPR, who must have their supporters tearing their hair out week in week out with their erratic form: bags of speed, but no sense of direction. The Hoops’ run in looks formidable: West Ham,

Liverpool and Man City are all away, home to Newcastle and finally … that Leicester lot away, which could prove a monumental match for both clubs although in the Hoops case it might not matter by then. If that’s two down, who’s the third? If ever a club is finishing a season badly, in big trouble with a horrid run in it’s Sunderland. Last year ’s Houdini-type manager Gus Poyet somehow kept the huge club up, but cannot repeat this and has gone . Now under win-or-else Dick Advocaat the Black Cats have two home games, Southampton and your actual Leicester but four away, starting with a difficult task at Stoke. The others are Everton, Arsenal and wait for it – the last Sunderland game is away to Chelsea. The Blues will surley be champions by then, and will want a big party at the

Bridge, which could be a wake for Sunderland. Ooh, it’s tough at the bottom!
