LUCKY ESCAPE… ALEX TRELINSKI

A

large passenger ferry between Palma in Mallorca and Valencia City caught fire on Tuesday lunchtime, but nobody was seriously injured. The Sorrento was 24 kilometres out from Palma when the blaze broke out, but all 157 passengers and crew were whisked to safety. All bar two were transferred to another member of the Trasmediterránea fleet, The Puglia, which was diverted from its journey between Ibiza and Barcelona to help with the

rescue operation, and returned people to Palma. Two people were airlifted to hospital in Mallorca:- a 25-year-old Italian woman who suffered mild smoke inhalation and a Philippine man who had a panic attack, both of whom since been discharged. Three crew members were also said to have suffered from smoke inhalation. A total of 12 nationalities (none were British) were travelling on the Sorrento, and around 80 of them were lorry drivers who were returning to Valencia with their vehicles. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.

…AND HERE’S ANOTHER! Ten families have been left homeless after a fivestorey flat collapsed in the Carrús area of Elche on Monday afternoon, but only one person was injured with no fatalities. Only the front wall remained, with the roof, floors and all other walls having fallen down, but nobody was trapped in the rubble. A 30 year old woman was taken to hospital with a twisted ankle, whilst two children were taken to Vinalopó

hospital, for observation as a precaution. Emergencies councillor, Manuela Mora, said that it was a miracle that there were no serious injuries, as the five storeys collapsed like a set of dominoes. Most people fled the block when a small roof initially caved in, before the rest of the building collapsed. Authorities are working on the basis that rotting concrete beams were behind the drama.

The Guardia Civil have seized 99 assault weapons that were destined to be sold on the black market, with possibly jihadist buyers interested in them. Seven people have been arrested with the main thrust of their operation being in Malaga on the Costa del Sol, but the Guardia said the gang had a workshop in the Alicante area, with around 20 items being sold locally. Assault and sub-machine guns, pistols, revolvers and rifle were all available for purchase, in addition to 21 thousand cartridge rounds.

British expats living in Spain and around the world are facing tighter rules as of this month on hopping back to the UK to use the National Health Service. New regulations mean that NHS users will have to declare where they are 'ordinarily resident'. Free NHS treatment is provided on the basis of someone being 'ordinarily resident'. It is not dependent upon nationality, payment of UK taxes, national insurance contributions, being registered with a GP, having an NHS number or owning property in the UK," said a Department of Health spokesman. Expats seeking emergency treatment in the UK could now face steep bills if they don't have medical insurance or an EHIC card.

Over a quarter of a million euros is to be spent repairing the storm damage caused a few weeks ago around the beaches of Pilar de la Horadada. Playa del Sardinero was especially affected (pictured), and the central government has authorised funds to build an emergency breakwater structure within the next few weeks. Money has also been budgeted to restore some of the beaches around Santa Pola to their former glory.

Murcia’s biggest music event, the SOS 4.8 festival, hits Murcia City tomorrow (May 1st) and Saturday, with a 20 thousand sell-out capacity crowd on both days in Recinto Ferial La Fica. Morrissey (pictured) and UK electronic trio, Years and Years, who recently topped the British charts with King, are two of the big attractions.

Non-Spaniards bought almost a third of the property sold in the Valencian region last year. The area is third in Spain for the number of foreigners buying homes after the Baleares (32.63 percent) and the Canary Islands (27.42 percent), according to figures from the Statistical Yearbook Property Registry. Valencia’s figures at 27.16 percent are largely accounted for in the Costa Blanca area, with the region pretty much doubling the number of foreign purchases recorded in 2013.

An Alicante judge has begun hearing the case of a woman who tried to kill her husband by mixing in rat poison into his food. The series of incidents, at an undisclosed location in the region, happened last year, with prosecutors calling for a 13 year jail sentence for attempted murder. The unnamed woman, who has two children, added the killer substance to her husband's food and medicine for a number of days, with the victim having to spend eight days in an Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital, with the injuries taking a further three months to heal.

FAMILY FEUD

A total of 73 years in jail has been handed out to six people after a summer Sunday night shootout between two rival mafia- style gangs called Los García Gallego and Los Wenceslas, which left two members with severe gunshot wounds. The showdown happened between Alicante City and San Vicente del Respeig in July 2013, as two rival drug trafficking gangs faced off in a street in Colonia Santa Isabel over a debt of just 500 euros. Three men were jailed for 17 years each for attempted murder and illegal possession of weapons, with them also having to pay compensation to the shot victims amounting to over a quarter of a million euros. Perhaps not too surprisingly, the rival gang members blamed each other during the trial for starting the fracas.

NO SURPRISE

Spain is considered the most corrupt country in the European Union, according to a study conducted by Statista, which measured citizens' perceptions of and experiences with corruption. Researchers asked people right across the EU whether they were affected by corruption in daily life, with 63 percent of Spaniards answering "yes," the highest figure across all the EU nations.

NICE AND POWER UP LEGAL (FOR SOME) Forget increased tourist figures and rising property sales. A sure-fire way of confirming that better economic times are coming to Spain comes courtesy of more people using electricity. Despite rocketing prices over recent years, returns for 2014 show that electricity consumption in Alicante Province went up by nought point eight per cent, after seven years of falls since the start of the recession. Experts suggest this is another sign of the green shoots of economic recovery. Catral council has already processed the first 80 applications to legalise homes illegally built on rural land in the area with a dozen requests being rejected. The council has received over 700 applications from owners looking to regularise their properties which were constructed illegally, with around 1,400 properties said to be in that position.

DIGGING DEEP

Record tourist figures for March (as reported in last week’s Courier), have led not too surprisingly to record spending figures for last month in the latest survey of tourist spending published by Egatur Turespaña. Visitors to the Valencia region parted company with 372 million euros in March, a rise of six point eight per cent on the same month last year. British visitors accounted for almost a third of the expenditure at 107 million euros, up by just over three percent on March 2014.

A gang of graffiti vandals have been arrested in the Murcia region for defacing trains and railway stations in Murcia, Madrid, Alicante, and Valencia. 17 people were arrested and another 18 were charged for causing over 460 thousand euros worth of damage around the country. The National Police have catalogued 133 different instances of graffiti being daubed by the group, along with one count of burglary.

PLANE SAILING

One hundred years of Spanish military seaplanes is being celebrated in a travelling exhibition which has based itself at Los Alcazares Town Hall until Monday May 4th. The display, loaned by the Madrid air force museum, celebrates the history of the Spanish air force, but the main local attraction is the engine of a seaplane which took off from Los Alcazares in 1915:- the first one to fly in Spain. The seaplane came by boat to Spain landing at Cadiz from the United States, with Los Alcazares becoming Spain's first ever sea aerodrome. The exhibition features nearly forty models, mainly seaplanes, and is worth more than 700 thousand euros. The exhibition runs weekdays from 9:00 am to 2.00 pm and then 6.00pm to 9.00pm, and this Saturday and Sunday between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm, and then from 6.00pm to 9.00pm

BEETLE DRIVE

Two Torrevieja woods have seen their trees fight off the danger of the Tomicus pest, after the parks department put in diffuser traps back in February. 14 units were installed at Lo Albentosa and nine at the Natural Municipal del Molino del Agua, with nearly 900 of the Tomicus beetles being caught. The beetle is one of the most destructive shoot-feeding species in Europe, and has been causing problems right across Alicante Province and further afield.

PRE-VOTE CLAIM

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has upped the ante on Spain’s economic recovery, with months to go before the general election. The Partido Popular leader claimed on Monday that the economy would grow by two point nine percent this year and next, creating around half a million new jobs. The previous forecast was for two point four percent expansion back in February.

Two Orihuela Costa beach bars have been given permission to open all year round by Orihuela council. The franchise holder Chiringuitos del Sol will be allowed to run its facilities at Playa de Cala Bosque at La Zenia(pictured) and at Caleta beach in Campoamor through till December 31st, with all-year renewal an expected formality. All of the beach bars on the Orihuela Costa will from this summer have to have tables and chairs and sunshades erected on wooden surfaces to help improve access for people in wheelchairs or children in pushchairs and prams. Meanwhile, the lift at Punta Prima beach which had been out of action for a number of months, is working again, therefore allowing disabled access to the beach which had not been possible when it was out of order.

FRIDAY FRACAS

SUMMER MOVE?

The saga of the un-opened Corvera airport in Murcia drags on, with the earliest possible date it could open now being the summer of 2016. The Murcia government has outlined a new one year closure and transfer plan involving San Javier airport, which would be part of a tendering package for Corvera. The first six months of the plan would be to find a tender for the management of Corvera, followed by the remainder of the period for San Javier to be wound down. Bidders want a San Javier closure plan to be in place before putting their money on the table, and there is the matter of the regional elections on Sunday May 24th, which may well see a change in administration, which is adding added impetus for the current PP government to put pen to paper with all interested parties to get the new timetable in place.

LONG STRETCH

Two men who robbed a Torrevieja couple and violently beat them in their own home, have had their combined jail sentences of over 40 years confirmed by Spain's Supreme Court. The crooks entered the home in September 2012 wearing balaclavas and smothered the woman with a pillow before handcuffing her. The husband who arrived an hour later was beaten up and threatened with shooting if he didn't reveal where the couple's valuables were in their property.

A Moroccan who was eventually heading for Italy, was arrested at Elche bus station with six kilos of hashish in his travel bag. The 24 year old man was charged with public health offences as officers discovered the drugs neatly wrapped up in five packets.

Two men were injured in a street fight between two families in the Carolinas Altas area of Alicante City last Friday afternoon. The row was apparently over a divorce with one person knifed along with bruising to the other participants, whilst gunshots were also fired into the air. Shell casings and a knife were found at the scene with the National Police arresting four of the fight participants. They were all bailed to reappear at a future date by a magistrate whilst a protection order was granted to the woman whose divorce caused the brawl.

SHORT CIRCUIT

An old British problem hit Alicante-Elche airport last Friday morning:- Fog! Ten incoming flights, including one from East Midlands Airport, had be diverted to other facilities like San Javier in Murcia, as the airport couldn't take in incoming services for a couple of hours. The closure meant a knock-on effect for our services resulting in delays of up to four hours.

The Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) has launched Spain’s first ever mobile canteen and shelter to help the homeless across the Vega Baja region. The van is part of a new pilot project to help homeless people and will give medical help, as well four showers for people to scrub up in. The unit, which was unveiled in Guardamar last week, will go to deprived areas around Almoradi, Callosa, Orihuela, and Torrevieja, where people live on the streets without water and electricity.

KILLER FALL

A Scottish tourist has died after plunging from a balcony while on holiday on the Costa Blanca. James Marshall, 39, from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, was on a break with friends and family in Benidorm when the incident happened. He was out with a large group of friends in the resort on the night of Friday April 17th. In the early hours of the Saturday, Mr Marshall was found dead near a swimming pool at the Rincon de Loix, where he was staying. It is understood he fell from a balcony.

KING’S MATE

Spain's ex-monarch, Juan Carlos had an affair with a German aristocrat for the last 10 years of his reign, according to a new book about his "double life" that is flying off Spanish bookshelves. The king, abdicated in June last year in favour of his son Felipe, was in a romantic relationship with Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and "for a long time" thought of divorcing his wife Sofia, according to author Ana Romero. Romero, a former royal correspondent for the El Mundo newspaper said the pair met in 2004, and that their illicit relationship ended shortly after his abdication. Prior to that, Juan Carlos thought for a long time about divorcing his wife Sofia, claims Romero. Her 424-page book, called "Final de Partida" or "End Game", focuses on the last four years of Juan Carlos's reign when his popularity slumped.

POWER CUT

Elche council has had enough of power company Iberdrola and is tendering for a new electric supplier which they claim could save around 150 thousand euros a year. The council got into a major row with the company, which refused for the first time ever to switch off supplies in parts of the city centre at around midnight last August for the famous Palmera de la Virgen firework display as part of the Nit de l´Albà. The council deny that the tender has been launched because of Iberdrola's refusal to cut power, but three other companies are bidding to take contract in addition to a fresh bid from Iberdola.

READY FREDDIE

A Bolton couple are in desperate need of thousands of euros after they got an unexpected bonus on their Benidorm holiday, when their son was born 12 weeks prematurely. They can’t now leave Spain until the baby is fit to travel and that could be another three months at least. Jordan Jackson, 21, and girlfriend Karla Hornby, 29, had been holidaying on the Costa Blanca to have a 'final relax' before the arrival of their son. Karla's waters broke when she was relaxing by the hotel pool and she was rushed to Alicante's San Juan Hospital and was given an emergency caesarean section after her son's heart stopped beating. Freddie Jackson was born weighing just two pounds and has been under close observation at San Juan since. Friends back in the Bolton area home have rallied around the pair and have set up a fund-raising page to try to pay their ever-increasing accommodation bill. The couple’s insurance company had agreed to put them up in another hotel three miles away, but due to a lack of public transport, it was not an option for Jordan and Karla.

Drivers going on a trip into Alicante City will need to mind which lanes they use. The council is putting in cameras on key bus lanes, like those around La Rambla, to stop motorists and cyclists using them illegally.

HAS ANYBODY SEENAN INVISIBLE ELEPHANT?

SO there we were gathered in the pub for another night of ribaldry and wit when Dave the barman announced suddenly: 'There's an elephant in the room.' There was instant hush as the hostelry regulars pondered on what mein host had said and indeed what on earth he had meant by saying it. The only sound to break the silence was the scraping of stool and table legs as Daft Barry shifted the furniture, hunting for the elephant in the room. 'Don't be daft, Barry,' I cautioned him. 'The phrase "elephant in the room" is a metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. The expression can also apply to an obvious problem or risk noone wants to discuss.' Daft Barry shrugged and continued to peer into corners, hoping to discover the elusive pachyderm. 'Stop it this instant, Barry,' I said tugging at his cardigan as the poor deluded lad got down on all fours to peek behind the slim vertical stem of a floor-standing ashtray. 'For goodness sake, Barry!' I yelled. 'Just give up the search! You are not going to spot the elephant there!' Daft Barry jumped to his feet and stabbed an accusing finger at me. 'That's how much you know, knowit-all Dave Silver! You know nowt! Nobody would ever dream of naming an elephant Spot! That's a dog's name!'

The pub was by now filled with the sound of hurled exclamation marks as Daft Barry and I went at it. It was left to Indoor Lou to defuse the powder keg of anger. 'Why is there an ashtray in here?' he asked. 'After all, smoking is banned.' Silence descended as we scratched our heads, seeking an answer to Indoor Lou's query. In a gesture of makingup after our furious row, Daft Barry and I scratched each other's heads. Then a voice came through the pub's front door. 'Er, that was me who brought back the ashtray after the introduction of the smoking ban,' announced Fag Ash Bill. He went on: 'I know I spend most of my time outside on the pavement having a cigarette while you lot in there fetch me drinks. But sometimes I need to use the pub facilities and I run in and rest my ciggy in that ashtray.' Mystery solved. But there remained the riddle of the elephant in the room. Then Fearful Phil started to weep. We clustered around him and asked him what had brought on the tears. 'It was something that

was mentioned before,' he said, blowing his nose on a folded beer mat. 'You're crying over an ashtray?' I asked. 'How

something.' 'You don't understand,' sniffed Fearful Phil. 'Anyway, I don't want to talk about it.'

strange.' 'Nah,' said Fearful Phil. 'It was something Daft Barry said which triggered my tears.' 'No surprise there,' observed Indoor Lou. 'We all end up wanting to cry when Daft Barry says

'You can tell me, luv,' said Andromeda Arkwright, the only woman in our pub group and our chief comforter. And she took Phil into a secluded corner. Andromeda emerged from the gloom a few minutes later. 'Fearful Phil is

upset because he once owned a dog named Spot,' she explained. 'It was the happiest time of his life.' We all muttered sympathetically at the disclosure. 'Dog is Man's best friend,' observed Indoor Lou. 'And don't forget that Man is Dog's best friend,' I said. 'I just said that!' snapped Indoor Lou, baring his teeth. 'No you didn't!' I growled back. 'Stop it you two or I'll throw a bucket of water over you both!' said Dave the barman. And then EVERYTHING stopped as Fearful Phil leaped out of the shadows and exclaimed: 'Oh my goodness. There's a dead body back there!' 'And that,' said Dave the barman, 'is the elephant in the room. The body belongs to Ol' Red Eyes.' Ol' Red Eyes was the oldest and allegedly wisest member of our pub group. He had been our guide and mentor for many years until Andromeda Arkwright had entered our lives and usurped Ol' Red Eyes as head honcho. Now the old guy spent most of his time asleep on the alehouse floor. 'What do you mean by

saying the body BELONGS to Ol' Red Eyes?' I asked. 'Why would Ol' Red Eyes be collecting corpses?' 'Don't be daft, Dave Silver! It's Daft Barry's job to be daft!' retorted Dave the barman. 'What I intended to impart is that it is Ol' Red Eyes HIMSELF who is dead!' 'What?' we pubsters chorused. 'Surely not. Ol' Red Eyes always appears to be dead but he is invariably only taking a nap.' Dave the barman sighed. 'Take it from me, people. Ol' Red Eyes IS dead. He is deceased, expired, done for, checked out, gone to meet his maker, extinct, no more, offed, departed, lifeless.' 'I can vouch for that,' said Fearful Phil. 'Ol' Red Eyes always makes some sort of sound when we step on him. Well, I've just stood on him several times and he didn't respond.' By now we were all in shock and it was left to Andromeda Arkwright, ever the practical one, to take over. 'In the apparent absence of any family, we shall have to arrange the funeral. But there's no need to look so frightened, Dave the barman, for I shall pay for everything.' And then the strangest thing happened. Like a ghost, Ol' Red Eyes stumbled out of the dark and appeared before our own widened eyes. 'I WAS asleep!' he declared. 'The only reason I made no sound when being stepped on was that the clumsy oaf stood on my gob!'

MUSLIM DIRTY CAPITAL DESERVING DOGGIES IMBALANCE

90 percent of Muslim students in Spanish schools have no access to Islamic religion classes, according to a Union of Islamic Communities report. In total, there are 275,324 Muslims students in Spain – making up almost four percent of the Spanish population. However nine out of 10 Islamic education teachers are unemployed across the country, while on average there are only two Islamic education teachers to every 6,000 Muslim students. The majority of Muslims are from Morocco although there is a significant number of Pakistanis and Senegalese Muslims in Barcelona, Valencia and Logrono.

Madrid has been given the unwanted tag Spain’s filthiest city in a survey done by the country’s Consumers Organization (OCU), based on spending on street cleaning as well as public perception to rank the cities based on how clean they were. Alicante and Valencia occupied the next two bottom places of shame, whilst Oviedo in the northern part of Spain came top of the clean list. The study, which was last carried out four years ago, showed the extent to which austerity measures had seen municipal cleaning budgets slashed. “Those cities that plummeted down the cleanliness scale since 2011 have been the cities suffering the biggest budget cuts; Cuenca, Valencia and Zaragoza,” read the conclusion of the OCU report.

A group of eight Spanish police officers have created an adoption agency for retired police dogs. Heroesde4patas.org finds homes for these faithful four legged friends, who have saved lives, worked against terrorism and kidnapping, and protected their trainers. The dogs become well respected and after a lifetime of hard work deserve to spend their remaining days in a loving home. Prospective adoptees are scrutinized to ensure they can offer a comfortable life by filling in a questionnaire and be interviewed in their home. Most dogs’ working life is between six to eight years, after which they are taken off duty.

LOCAL LOOK-IN CHARITY BOOST

A sell-out show for singing duo Bella Luna helped to raise 580 euros for the Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity last Friday. The event at the Quesada Country Club also featured an auction that got 310 euros in the charity’s coffers. The Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity was set up to look after those that have been diagnosed at terminally ill, all free of charge, to help patients die in peace and with dignity. We can also arrange private nursing care.

RAISED VOICES

The chart-topping UK Military Wives choir, made famous by Gareth Malone, played to two packed houses last weekend at La Zenia’s Ecumenical Centre, helping to raise a bumper sum of four thousand euros for local charities. The wives performed a programme as well as the hosts from the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir, and then both groups came together for a glorious finale in two numbers that brought enthusiastic standing ovations.

40 local associations gathered last Sunday for Torrevieja’s sixth annual Associations Day, which was staged once again on the Paseo de Vista Alegre. Pensioners and retiree groups mixed with clubs representing different countries like Belgium, Bulgaria, Russia and Senegal as well as local charities.

GREETINGS GALAHAD Another severely neglected mare rescued from a Granada breeding yard by the Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has given birth to a healthy foal called Galahad (pictured). The birth came just a week after a second mare from the same rescue operation also gave birth to a healthy colt. You can meet both foals when the Centre holds its next free monthly open day this Sunday, May 3rd. “It’s amazing that the foals have arrived so well considering the terrible condition the mares were in when we got them three months ago,” rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said. Three malnourished mares and a stallion were rescued last December in the joint operation with Malaga-based rescue charity El Refugio del Burrito, which took at least four donkeys into custody. All animals found at the Granada property were severely malnourished and one foal was found dead. The centre will also be the new home for an adult pony found abandoned and wandering alongside the AP7 motorway near San Javier a couple of weekends. Police tracked down the owner in Almeria using the pony’s identichip and are now looking to prosecute him. The centre itself is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59, with more details and directions at www.easyhorsecare.net

Just under 800 euros was raised in a St. George’s Day fundraiser last week for Maria & The Pink Ladies on behalf of the AECC cancer charity, in an event they organised with Morgan’s Bar at Eagles Nest, Villamartin. WE NEED EVEN MORE HELP

Our capacity was 20 animals and we now have 40. I know, you will say we are stupid, but when you have dogs with their legs hanging off or who have been buried alive that no one else will take, it is difficult to say no. We have dogs who have had their two front legs broken as puppies; some who have been hit so hard on the head they are now blind; and dogs that are so terrified at the horrific abuse they have endured, that they cannot look at you in the eye and run for cover, as they try and squeeze themselves into the nearest corner, with their tales tucked tightly between their legs and their bodies trembling with complete terror. I am tired. I am sick of asking for funds and0 trying to keep the charity afloat and with all of this immense pressure, I have to also try and cope with the death of my mum. I get people slagging us off, saying we are stupid for what we do and we are idiots for trying to help animals, when the problem will never go away. I know now that these people send me these messages in between watching Eastenders or Coronation Street, but if they were here and seen the complete terror we are working with, they

would run a mile. We don't run, instead we help and our passion is such that it will not stop. O u r current d a i l y spend on the animals a n d treatment is 2 8 5 pounds. In the last two d a y s o u r donations h a v e been a total of nil. The d a y before, it was just ten euros. We constantly get people saying that everyone is in this situation, but the charities I know get daily help and we get none. We have two volunteers and we have no other back up whatsoever. We have no web designer. Our website has just been hacked, which will cost the charity 200 pounds

to put right. We have no foster homes and we are satu-

such immense injuries that most people cannot even

rated with daily abuse. The last time we managed to sit down in peace and watch something on TV was back in 2013! The pressure is simply immense. Yes, we put ourselves in this situation, but I honestly thought there would be huge backing for a charity like ours who are taking on dogs with

look at them for longer than five seconds. Everyone says that our charity does great work towards the poor animals that have been subject to complete terror, but if something doesn't change soon, our charity will no longer exist. The people who support us, you are immense.

Ascott Cab Company, based in Deptford, South East London have given us amazing support and so have other amazing individuals. For that we are eternally grateful, but so many of our pleas fall on deaf ears. I so wish you could see the horrors we see every day and then you would see that it is impossible to say no to an animal who has so much fear in their eyes and has no other option but us. I am a simple man, brought up on a council estate in South East London, who had options to follow a career offered to me in TV, but said no, because I must follow my heart and save as many animals from abuse as I can. I guess after

all of this, what I am trying to say is that we simply need more support, or otherwise we will simply no longer exist. We try so hard, day in day out and it would be simply beautiful, just to concentrate on rehabilitating the animals, as opposed to worrying about finances. MARCHA CICLOTURISTA,“CIUDAD SAN VICENTE” CYCLE SPORTIF

On Saturday 25th April 2015, ten members of Team “Cyclogical” based in Quesada travelled to Ciudad San Vicente de Raspeig just outside Alicante to participate in The Cicloturista Velo Sport Marcha. The team left from “Cyclogicals” shop in Quesada at 6.00am and travelled in convoy along the AP7 arriving at the Velodrome in san Vicente at 7pm where they went straight to the registration tent to collect their race numbers and goodie bag and then the restaurant for coffee and tostada to start the day. The race was well organised and started on time at 8.30am with a mass start and no pace car which was brilliant the group soon thinned out as many of us left the town at very fast speeds as all junctions etc were controlled by the police with all vehicles stopped until we had all passed. The course covered a total distance of 138kms with 2500 metres of climbing involved which included 4 pretty steep climbs these were Puerto de Tibi which was a 15.5km climb right at the start ramping up to 24% in stages, Puerto de Ibi , Puerto de Canalis and Puerto

de Biar, there were quite a few 12 ,15 and 18% climbs which sorted everyone out. There were 400 riders participating on this route and it was not long before there were many splinter group’s but everyone just found their own pace and got on with it. The first groups of riders were very quick and it was not long before they made their mark and arrived back within the 4 hour mark which was a great result over this tough terrain. Most of the participants took approx 5 hours and everyone finished by going through a tunnel right into the Velodrome where everyone did a lap of honour before proceding to collect a lovely commemorative trophy which was in the shape of the profiles of the hills they were also engraved with our names and times which was brilliant .At the finish everyone was treated to free beer, soft drinks and Paella which was a great way to wind down there were also free masseurs for anyone wishing a massage. The Team are pictured on their bikes just before the start and are from left to right : Alan Quearns, Kelvin

Howard, Malcky Murray, Gary Routledge, Graham Kinghorn, Martyn Stone, Richard Binns, Tony Nolan, Owen Desmond and Peter Cunningham. All of the Team had an excellent day’s cycling and are looking forward to their next Sportif in June, Tour del Juguette, Costa Blanca and are also planning to return to San Vicente next year. The team would also like to thank all their sponsors for their continued support, Sol-4 investment consulting, Expat pensions and investments, Arrow rent a car, Shenanigans bar, Spanish insurance, Securidan, Pulse core fitness and Ambience fires and solar. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Thursday night at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. HOME TRUTHS OVER PROPERTY MADNESS

The world of property ownership is crazy be it here in Spain or over in the UK. Take the story of a pensioner who is going back to Britain after a decade living in the Torrevieja area. He owns a highly desirable apartment just off the seafront, and although he´s been paying a mortgage regularly year in year out, he is having to leave the property in the hands of the bank without realising a cent. Heartbreaking? Yes. He´s just another of the many thousands of people who bought when property prices were high, and mortgage repayments simply have not kept up with the drop in property prices. So, after parting with a small fortune in repayments and interest, he´s back where he started with nothing! Sad or what? Back in Blighty, and a Liverpool couple have spent a near lifetime paying off their mortgage and they too have found it was a total waste of time and money. Why? An even more disastrous reduction in property prices, aided and abetted by the council. The couple became mortgage free around 15 years ago, but in 2008, the street became part of a regeneration scheme and the council bought properties and boarded them up ready for demolition. Estate agents say the couple would now struggle to sell their home for much more than one pound as other houses in the street are being sold off at that price by the council. Despite their neighbours moving out, the couple stayed put as they had elderly parents living close by

who relied on them. They thought that what the council was offering for their home at the time - around £85,000 - was too low and believed it was worth closer to £120,000, another reason for them not selling. They said: "We've spent our lives paying off a property that is now worth virtually nothing. Who's going to buy our house for thousands when they can get the house next door for one pound?” "We watched our friendly road turn into a ghost town. There's junk everywhere and we're plagued with rats and fly tipping. The council created this ghetto that we are now trapped in and they feel they owe us nothing at all." Council regeneration schemes such as the "buy for a pound" plan in Liverpool are great when it breathes new life into a rundown area, but everyone should be treated equally and fairly. I imagine that eventually this house will rise in value again as new neighbours do up their homes, but it might be a long time coming. These first two stories involve people who have lost out big time owning their homes, but some lucky subsidised housing tenants could be in line to get a massive windfall if the Tories stay in power. A number of people are currently paying around £150 a week to live in flats in exclusive parts of Mayfair and Covent Garden in London which are owned by housing associations and are now worth several million. Under Conservative plans to give tenants the

chance to own their own homes, people living in these plush properties could now get the chance to buy them with discounts of up to £102,000, after living in them for cheaper rents. Ten properties owned by the

never have been tenanted, they should have been sold off and the proceeds used to build many more affordable homes. To include them now in a right to buy scheme is utter madness! And now another kind of

Peabody housing association in London are located in the expensive areas of Mayfair and Covent Garden - and are worth between £1million and £2.2million. The house used in the recent Paddington Bear film, in Primrose Hill, is also owned as affordable housing. Another Association, One Housing, which owns 750,000 properties in London, said around 750 of these were worth more than £1million. Personally I cannot for the life of me understand why these favoured few should be subsidised to such an extent. It´s crazy having council housing in the most luxurious of locations - the properties should

madness. It´s housing of a sort, but it has no bathroom, no mains electricity and the only way to reach it is by boat or a novelty 'Noddy' train. It´s a modest timber shed, but it´s on the market for £230,000 – making it one of Britain's most expensive beach huts. Measuring just 15ft by 10ft, the remote beach hut on Mudeford Spit(pictured) in Christchurch, Dorset, is the same price as a five-bedroom house in Herefordshire and more than a detached four-bedroom house in Kingswood, Hull. Owners will also have to shell out between £2,500 and £4,000 a year in ground rent to Christchurch

Borough Council for use of the hut. Denisons Estate Agents said the market for beach huts and Mudeford has snowballed over the last few years and many go for more than £200,000. They said: "They do seem to be fetching around the £200,000-mark now and there are rumours of them going higher than that." Here in all its glory is the dreadful class division in Britain, where one council has to give houses away for £1 while another gets up to four thousand pounds for a beach hut which are changing hands for almost a quarter of a million pounds. It´s obscene! Regular readers will know I have absolutely no time for sex perverts, even less when they are interfering with children and I have utter contempt when they are in positions of power and authority and use that to carry out their disgusting perversions and cover them up. That´s why I was sickened to hear of the allegations made against Labour peer Lord Jenner. A tenpage witness statement has detailed an alleged victim's harrowing ordeal at the hands of Janner. But all references to the politician were removed from the child's social services file, according to legal papers obtained by a national newspaper in the UK. A children's home manager told bosses she feared he was having sex with the child but her concerns were 'swept under the carpet'. The scale of the cover-up helps explain how the former Labour MP repeatedly escaped justice. The

Director of Public Prosecutions says there was sufficient evidence to charge Janner with 22 offences of paedophilia against nine children. But the DPP director Alison Saunders outraged campaigners by ruling the 86year-old should not face court because he has dementia. Critics say this is the latest proof of the Establishment's strenuous efforts to protect one of its own came as it emerged that Janner hosted at least four private banquets as well as dinners and afternoon teas at the House of Lords after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's and a dossier about the peer is among 114 files on child sex abuse that have gone missing from the Home Office. In addition, Mrs Saunders has admitted that having dementia is 'not a bar' to being prosecuted and now it appears that Alison Saunders trained at 1 Garden Court chambers in London, the same in legal chambers where Lord Janner worked as a top QC. I believe that all the evidence available should be brought to a court and publicly aired. It may be that Janner has full-blown Alzheimer´s but that should not be a bar to him appearing in court and hearing evidence against him. Let´s hope that the investigations currently going on to unravel the appalling crimes that are alleged to have been committed by the most prominent figures in society 20 to 30 years ago are finally brought into the open. Personally, I´d like to see the lot of them hang.

GLENIS’S LAST WALK

As I wrote last week, I have a fascination with unsolved crimes, and I’m going to feature a couple over the next fortnight. Firstly, there’s an open case which is quite close to home for me. On January 19th 1974, I had just celebrated my third birthday, not that I remember it of course! I was living in Weston-super-Mare about 20 miles from Bristol, and we had not long arrived from Canada and I was living with my mum, sister and grandmother in my nana´s bungalow. I was too young to comprehend the full horror of what my family and the local community were about to read in their morning papers but now I am old enough, I still cannot understand the actions of the person who left a young girl lying dead on cold winter grass. In January 1974, there was a party in a house close to Bristol Zoo to celebrate a 21st birthday, with a variety of people of different ages there. The guests included a 20 year old student and Sunday school teacher who had made a long

trip from Bedford and who, at around 10.00 pm decided to take a walk. The reason for her departure is not known, some reports say she felt like a wallflower as most of her friends had partners, however that was denied by her friends. She was attacked in a clumsy manner and her body found by a man who worked at the zoo and lived nearby. After seeing what he thought was a courting couple, he noticed the man stand up alone and begin to walk away. He shouted after the youth, who was described as having long hair and wearing a duffle coat, but the man ignored him and walked off. It was then that the zoo worker, Alf Elliot, noticed the lifeless body of Glenis Carruthers lying on the grass verge. The area where she was found was about half a mile from the house and it seems probable that she walked there on her own or maybe she knew her killer and walked with him, however it was at this point, to the north of the zoo that the life was forced out of her by strangulation. There was no sign of

a sexual assault and little signs of a struggle, although the

description of the male stated that he had hair covering his face, maybe caused by a disturbance. This murder was committed in the days of Three Day Week and Edward Health’s fight with the miners, and so there were less street lights than normal and this again assisted the assailant escape justice as the dark

lights made it difficult to get a good description. 16 thousand people were interviewed during the police investigation, but a suspect was never ever identified. For me the most intriguing part of this case is why Glenis decided to go out for a walk without telling anyone where she was going. Indeed her friends only started to get worried when nobody knew where she was. Why had she left alone on a freezing January night to walk half a mile to a telephone box? And why not mention to a friend where she was going? Unless she didn´t actually leave alone and someone went with her? I can´t imagine a religious 20 year old girl would leave a party alone without just mentioning to someone where she was going out of politeness. Maybe she went with someone and they both had different ideas as to why they were

going out? There is the possibility, and in a way it´s more likely as each guest would have been spoken to and cleared in the ensuing investigation, that she did actually leave alone without telling anyone, made the half mile walk to where she died and was attacked as she made her way to the phone box. If you look on Google maps at the route that she took, you can see a main road with houses on one side and the famous Clifton College on the other side. Although the lighting was bad, there must have been some there, yet nobody apparently saw Glenis walking along the road, nor did anyone apparently see a girl walking around the front of the zoo towards a phone box, although this would have had to been a driver as there are no houses there. Maybe no one saw a single girl walking along the street because she wasn´t alone or maybe everyone was inside in front of their heaters. Either way the police drew a blank on this investigation, and nothing has changed over 40

years on. Another strange fact was that there were no other injuries to Glenis than a small abrasion to her throat, and it was stated by leading investigator that he believed it possible the killer didn’t even realise that he had killed someone, although the rest of the facts, with the killer on the ground with the girl when found, suggests otherwise. I imagine that life in 1974 was very different to how it is today, people most likely felt safer walking the streets and the lack of electrical power was probably thought of more as an inconvenience than a danger but this shows the tragic result of not having street lights. We will sadly now never know why Glenis chose to go out and what her aim was on that black evening. We cannot ask her, and we can just hope that whoever did it has been caught for some other case, and although unlikely, it is possible. Next week I´ll be writing about another heartbreaking case from history that may sadly never be solved.

Spanish 170 ¡hola! I hope you´ve had a great week and are looking forward to the sun finally coming out and maybe summer is about to start! I, for one am fed up of the weather and can´t wait to start wearing short sleeves every day and not having to think about what I´m going to wear! This week I am going back to basics and will focus on building sentences. We all know that we need to put words together in order to make a sentence and that the order of the words helps the sentence make sense! The one main rule when making a sentence is that there must be a subject and a verb, remember a verb is an action or doing word and the subject is the person or thing that the verb relates to, Spanish it is more difficult than English because of the verb conjugations and variety of tenses, for example, where we have the past simple in English there is the imperfect and preterit in Spanish, as well as the verb soler in the past which tends to correspond with the

Thursday 30th April 2015

English used to. In this lesson I am going to assume that you have a basic knowledge of Spanish and know the subject pronouns (yo, tú,etc) and are aware of masculine and feminine. When we are making sentences in Spanish we s h o u l d remember that the subject is almost always implied with the verb conjugation that we choose, for example if I say voy a la tienda cada día, you know that the subject is I, simply because of the conjugation of the verb ir into the first person singular. Therefore in English of course we have to say ´I go to the shop every day´, but in Spanish the subject pronoun yo can be omitted. Now we have that clear I hope you are all aware of the verb conjugations in various tenses; that is what ending we have to put on each subject pronoun in each tense, present, past and future, and I hope you are aware of the irregular verbs, such as ir which

doesn´t follow the rules. Now we are going to build some sentences. Let´s start by remembering or learning the verb - to want. In Spanish the infinitive of to

lete. Next you add where you want the ticket for, in this case imagine we are going to Madrid, so you need to add to Madrid which is a Madrid, so your sen-

want is querer. It is an irregular e – ie changing verb. Therefore to say I want in Spanish we say quiero now I want you to say ´quiero´ out loud (en voz alta) Remember your pronunciation, key air oh, say each syllable slowly at first and then faster until you can make it sound more fluent. Next, the word for a ticket is un billete, remember the double L sound is like an English Y, so the pronunciation is be yet ay (as in day). Say it syllable by syllable and then slowly repeat until you say it together as one word. The next step is to say the three words together as a sentence: quiero un bil-

tence now is: quiero un billete a Madrid. This is how you begin to speak in Spanish, by building simple phrases and then working up to more complicated ones such as reflexive verbs and those with object pronouns, etc. However I am going to keep it basic for now and eventually we will move up to more complicated structures. Another very useful verb is tener which means to have, it is not used as the auxiliary English verb to have which is used in the perfect tense (Have been, had seen, etc) that is haber, tener is used to mean possession and obligation. Again this is an irregular

verb which you will need to learn separately however today we are just concentrating on the first and second person singular forms, the first person singular (I) have is (yo) tengo. Firstly possession: repeat the verb I have: tengo this is very easy for E n g l i s h speakers as it´s the same pronunciation as it would be in English ten go, just put the two words together and there you have it. Now what do we have? Let´s say we have a nice house, the words for a nice house are una casa bonita so again let´s put the two together: tengo una casa bonita, pero, ¿dónde está tu casa? Where is your house? In Torrevieja..en Torrevieja, let´s put it all together: tengo una casa bonita en Torrevieja. The other use of tener is with obligation: that is in English when we say that we have to do something. Once again we start with the verb, this time let´s use the second person singular ver-

sion of the verb which in English is you (one person, friend or child) This in Spanish is (tú) tienes, remember your pronunciation: tee en es.. then push the syllables together bit by bit until they make one word. When we are using tener as a form of obligation we need to use the word que between tener and the infinitive of the following verb, the pronunciation of que is the same as the English letter K, as we saw before the verb to go is ir and I always tell my students it´s pronounced like the English word ´ear´. So let´s put the three words together to say you have to go = tienes que ir. How do you think we say ´I have to go´? that´s right: tengo que ir. This is how we begin to build our vocabulary and actually start to use English in our daily lives, just change the noun with querer and the infinitive verb with tener and you will be able to expand your language significantly. Next week we will continue with making sentences and building our vocabulary and grammar. ¡que tengáis una buena semana!

Friday 1st May to Thursday 7th May 2015 Laurel, but Cain has found her at home, drunk. He tells her to pack, as Marlon wants her gone, giving her £300. Driving through the village, Cain and Marlon are horrified by what they witness. They see his car in the stream and realise Laurel's hit and killed Daisy and is trying to bury her.

In Friday´s first visit to the cobbles, when Bethany sends a cheeky text to Carla on Nick’s phone, suggesting she and Nick meet up for a drink later, Nick’s amused. But later as he waits for Carla in the Bistro, he’s taken

aback when Erica suddenly turns up - revealing she’s pregnant! On Monday, David is furious to find Callum at no.8 having been getting it on with Sarah. As David turns on Sarah, Callum enjoys winding David up. David’s desperate and clutching

their passports, David bundles Max and Lily into a cab. What is he up to? Billy calls at No.11 and angrily shows Sean the Gazette article about their run in with the pub landlord. Sean’s mortified and explains how Julie contacted the paper with their story.

On Wednesday, David dresses Max and Lily, explaining they’re off on holiday. Gail and Michael return from honeymoon. Nick and Sarah break the news that Erica’s pregnant, Sarah’s started a relationship with Callum and David has done a runner with the kids.

Channel Four News team along with comment and comedy from the likes of Adam Hills and Richard Osman, but I suspect that the

major viewing figures will be for the BBC. I always call it a night of excuses and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of those around.

Having mentioned Kay Burley, I loved her animated puppet character the other day on ITV’s Newzoids, which is a cheap version of the classic Spitting Image. The voice work, led by Jon Culshaw, is bang on the buck, along with the characters, with the Royal Family looking identical to the old Spitting Image puppets. It has made me laugh, but Spitting Image did it so much better, especially in the scripting(led by the likes of Ian Hislop), which really had a sharp side to it. I’ve long moaned that there is not enough satire on UK TV, and so I welcome Newzoids, and I hope that ITV stick with it and develop it further. If you’ve not seen it on FOX UK or on free-to-air

Spanish TV already, then you’re in for some fun with season five of The Walking Dead, which starts tomorrow night (Friday) on the free UK TV channel, Spike. The opening and closing episodes are fantastic, and in-between there are some good outings and some downright boring ones. But that’s always been the case with The Walking Dead, with the great moments being truly memorable, and spoiler alert:- some old faces return. Strong recommendation for tonight is new Cold War spy series, The Game on BBC2 at 10.00pm. This is murky Ipcress File and le Carre territory with Tom Hughes taking the lead as spy Joe Lambe in the early seventies.

The drama continues on Friday it is the dramatic aftermath and all are left reeling from recent events and Marlon struggles to comprehend what has happened. Have things changed forever? On Monday, Cain is stunned

Eastenders Kat pays a visit to the convent where she gave birth to Zoe, and takes a trip down memory lane with one of the nuns. On Monday, Ronnie has a heated encounter with Vincent

to learn about Laurel and doesn’t mince his words when he tells Marlon not waste his life on her. Later in the week, Diane offers Marlon more time off work but Laurel insists she will be fine. Laurel fumes as Marlon, Harriet and Ashley search for the missing wine.

When Harriet finds the empty bottle, Laurel fears she's finally blown it, when Marlon walks out. On Thursday, Laurel leaves another worried voicemail for Marlon, having not heard from him. Cain's adamant Marlon should kick her out. Marlon is unreadable as he heads to see

Will Ronnie finally confront Charlie? As for Tuesday, Kim is forced to face her fears now that she is face-to-face with Vincent. With Patrick and Denise by her side, Kim comes clean about what she saw. Thursday sees Alfie take Kat

for a romantic trip to central London before he breaks the bad news which he read in the letter. Kat once again tells Alfie that she wants to give their relationship another chance, but Alfie still doesn't think they are ready for a reunion.

Coronation Street

TRELI ON THE TELLY FRIGHT NIGHT with ALEX TRELINSKI

Forget the most boring and tedious UK General Election campaign that I can remember, but instead get yourself stocked up with some sangria and tapas for what is sure to be a fun-filled Election Night next Thursday. It will be a happy or frightening night, depending on who you want to get in or not get in! But what channel to watch it on? It’s an end of an era as David Dimbleby hosts his last ever election show, having been the anchor since 1979 on BBC1, and of course his dad, Richard, did the business in the fifties up to the 1964 elec-

tion. ITV News political editor, Tom Bradby, will host that channel’s coverage, but perhaps the most fun will come on Channel Four, as Jeremy Paxman and comedian David Mitchell will co-host their programme. Sky News has decided to move away from basing a lot of their show in a studio and will have the likes of Jeremy Thompson, Anna Botting, and the nauseating Kay Burley anchoring on location. Though I’m a BBC loyalist, I think Channel Four have played a good card, as based on the 2010 election, it took ages for any meaningful results to come in, so there’ll be entertainment mixed in with the hard politics. It will be an interesting mix of the hard-nosed and brilliant

Safe House 21:00 - ITV

In a recent three-month period the number of counterfeit cheques rose by 400 per cent, and detectives suspect one particular gang is behind this huge increase. In a series of dawn raids, police carry out arrests at 20 addresses in Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Barnsley and Wakefield, and recover hundreds of stolen chequebooks and credit cards, as well as printing equipment and false identity documents. However, with no sign of the ringleader, a nationwide manhunt begins.

ADVICE: Anne wanted to know why AVG was telling her ADVICE: Kathy was having problems connecting Internet Explorer to the Internet she was no longer protected.

Q

Hi Richard - a query please if you can help put our minds at ease. Last year we downloaded AVG free in line with the article you put in the Courier. So we have AVG 2014 free but recently we have been prompted on screen to buy AVG with the comment we are no longer protected. We have ignored the prompts on the assumption that our free cover lasts 12 months before we renew with I suppose 2015 free cover - are we correct in that assumption or should we be doing something now? Hope you can help? Many thanks Barry & Anne

A

Hi guys, it sounds like your AVG has been “upgraded” to the trial version – as opposed to the free version. Nothing wrong with this of course, however it will eventually ask you for a credit card and if you are happy enough with the free version then there is no real reason to upgrade. You can downgrade it again pretty easily by going into the control panel and clicking on “uninstall a program”, then find AVG and click on “change”, you will then see a downgrade option to restore the AVG free 2014 edition – hope this helps.

QUESTION: Amanda wanted to know what the difference was between Google Chrome and Internet Explorer

Q A

Hi Richard, my friends keep telling me that I should be using Google Chrome? What is it and do I need it?

Hi Amanda, Google Chrome is a web browser (something that you use to look at Internet pages), it is just an alternative to using Microsoft Internet Explorer, other alternatives include FireFox and Safari. Most people find that Google Chrome works a little quicker than other browsers so, in my opinion, yes its worth using, but only if you are not happy with the speed of Internet Explorer.

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternatively why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

Q

Have managed to connect my small LG notepad to the Wi-Fi at home but when I try to open internet explorer it won't connect. Says address is invalid. Am using windows XP.

A

Hi Kathy, it sounds like either there is a problem with Internet Explorer or your default home page is set to something that no longer exists. You should be able to fix both of these things by resetting Internet Explorer. Have a look at the following link, it should give you the instructions you need... http://www.bluemoonsolutions.es/faq/francis-was-having-a-frustrating-time-withfacebook ...if not then come back to me and we can go from there.

ADVICE: Bob wanted to know how to transfer his photos from his phone to his computer

Q

Richard, how can I transfer my photos from my Samsung Galaxy S4 to my computer? 1. I have tried sending them to my email address 2. I attached them to my pc via a USB cable 3, I accessed the Control Panel and tried to add my phone as a new device

A

Hi Bob, usually when you connect a phone to a computer using a USB cable, the phone appears as a USB stick, so try clicking on “computer” once you have connected the phone and see if you can see it in there. You may find that you need to put your phone in “PC Mode” after you connect it so look out for that

SLOW DOWN FOR HORSES

A lot of focus is put on more vulnerable road users, and for all the right reasons, on account of the very fact that pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists usually come of worse in a crash, but there are other road users who could pose a hidden problem. Sometimes, there comes a need to share the road with other, more traditional vehicles, powered by a means that may result in sudden and dramatic actions, on account of these road users having no concept of what roads or traffic are about, horses. In April, the people of Seville celebrate one of their biggest local fiestas, the Feria de Abril, or April fair, an traditional event attended by around 5 million people each year that dates back to 1847 as a livestock event. These days it is more a celebration of colour, music, dance, and of

course horses. Replica events take place around the country at different times. In Torrevieja, the May Fair is exactly that, a replica of the main fiesta of Seville, which is traditionally held in the port area of the city centre. These events see numer-

ous horses, some pulling carts, mixing with the normal flow of traffic at times. As horses tend to travel a lot slower than other road vehicles, it is crucial that motorists are aware of how to deal with them. It is not entirely about fies-

tas however. Although they may be considered something on an antiquated form of transport, horses are making a return to many streets of Spain carrying out transport duties on a regular basis on account of both their cost saving abilities and environmental benefits. Horse-drawn carriages are often common in tourist locations and city centres, but it was only recently that Barcelona city council granted a license for a funeral director to carry out the last journey to the cemetery by horse-drawn hearse. In July, 2014, the Alicante town of Monforte del Cid became the first local council to introduce the horse and cart as part of its household waste collection service, reducing the bill of 400,000 euro by half to just 200,000 euro. The police and Guardia Civil in Spain both have mounted sections, apart from dealing with crowd control, police horses are a common sight in the capital as horseback patrols take to the

streets on a regular basis, whereas the Guardia Civil often use their four-legged assistants to reach more rural areas than foot or motor power can reach. Horses are also showcased in a ceremonial manner too, a popular spectacle for many to observe. When it comes to dealing with horses, the advice for motorists is, perhaps as always, expect the unexpected. Slow down and be ready to stop if necessary whilst keeping a sharp eye out for

signals given by the rider asking vehicles to slow down or stop. You should watch out for sudden movements as horses can be easily frightened and unpredictable. Keep the noise down to a minimum so as not to startle the horse, so avoid sounding your horn, revving the engine, and even keeping music at a low volume level. Take extra care on bends, narrow roads or brows of hills, always keep well back and give the horse plenty of room, and if you do get an opportunity to overtake in a safe position, pass wide, slow and quietly, avoiding any sudden moves, giving the horse plenty of room. Once you are clear, you can then accelerate, but do so gently, never speed away, do everything slowly and calmly. Article 17 or the Reglamento General de Circulaci贸n, deals with the control of vehicles or animals, and states that drivers must at all times be able to control their vehicles or animals, and when approaching other road users, they must take the necessary precautions for their safety, especially when it comes to children, the elderly, blind or other persons clearly impaired.

Can't stand people using your favourite mug? You're not alone Do you have that one favourite mug you like to keep for yourself, refusing to share with anyone else? According to research from Heinz Cup Soup, you're not alone. Nearly 60 per cent of us have an "emotional attachment" to our favourite mugs. Thirty-one per cent of those surveyed revealed they were so protective over their mug, they would never let anyone else drink from it. One in six of us will sulk if someone else uses it, and 38 per cent of us would then hide it in the future. A third said they would feel "angry" or "totally devastated" if their mug broke, with 42 per cent adding that their favourite mug is not replaceable. Food psychologist Christy Fergusson said: "We are incredibly attached to these simple everyday objects because psychologically they

evoke a sense of warming, comfort and safety in us. "Thaler coined this term 'endowment effect'. When we touch something, it almost becomes an extension of us. You can create a deeper connection to it and associate memories, emotions and feelings with objects." The study also found the nation is divided when it comes to calling it a "mug" or a "cup". Two thirds prefer to call it a mug, whilst only one third refers to it as a cup.

UK linguist and language expert Professor David Crystal said: "The usage of the two words differs greatly, when people talk of cups, they're more likely to be thinking of the contents rather than the object. "One slurps a cup of soup for example. It is also associated with drinking at a social event. This isn’t the case with ‘mug’, which is used to describe the object and not the contents or occasion."

Have scientists found a way to 'switch off' hunger? We all know what it’s like to try and lose weight, only to find ourselves gorging on chocolate once the hunger pangs strike. There could be hope for dieters however, after scientists identified the brain cells which create the sensation of hunger – findings that they say create "a promising new target for the development of

weight-loss drugs”. Resarchers from Harvard Medical School and Edinburgh University found that a brain circuit known as melanoncortin 4 receptor-regulated (MC4R) is the set of cells which controls the desire to eat. By switching off the cells in a group of mice, the scientists increased hunger, while switching them

on stopped the hunger pangs. "Our results show that the artificial activation of this particular brain circuit is pleasurable and can reduce feeding in mice, essentially resulting in the same outcome as dieting but without the chronic feeling of hunger," explained the study's co-senior author Bradford Low, a professor of medi-

cine at Harvard Medical School and an investigator at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for Nutrition and Metabolism. The scientists managed to activate and switch off the brain cells by exposing the mice to blue laser light, via an optical fibre that was implanted in the animals' brains.

"Artichokes have the highest amount of antioxidants in vegetables,' says Joanne. 'As well as vitamin C, which is the most powerful antioxidant, artichokes contain phytonutrients – that’s plant nutrients – with medicinal effects. Breast milk ice cream relaunched to 'celebrate' royal baby British ice cream makers, The Licktators are at it again, this time capitalising on the imminent arrival of the Royal Baby. Fresh from their "female viagra" ice cream, the quirky ice cream producers are now collaborating with breastfeeding campaigner Victoria Hiley to make a breast milk ice cream, in order to "remind the Duchess of Cambridge, and mothers around the country, of the benefits of breastfeeding. "And also how delicious breast milk is, whatever your age." Dubbed the "Royal Baby Gaga" ice cream, the new ice cream is made from donated breast milk - screened in line with hospital standards - which is then blended with Madagascan vanilla.

This isn't the first time Hiley has worked with The Licktators. In 2011, they teamed up to sell "Baby Gaga" breastmilk ice cream in a store in London. Lady Gaga threatened to sue them because of the name, describing it as "nausea-inducing", though the company refused to change it. Within a week of going on sale, the ice cream was seized by officers of Westminster Council so they could conduct safety tests. Hiley said: "There was huge support from breastfeeding women for Baby Gaga ice cream in 2011, yet some politicians still stigmatise women for breastfeeding in public. “We thought the birth of a Royal baby

was a great time to whip up support for mums and say that when it comes to ice cream this summer, breast is best. “After all, what else would you give your young prince or princess?”

You buy the ice cream on The Licktators website and from selected retailers. They've also published a handy recipe, so you can make breast milk ice cream at home.

British asparagus on course for a bumper year Food lovers could be in for a treat, as the mild spring has ushered in what could be the best crop of outdoor grown British asparagus for nearly a decade. The harvesting season traditionally starts on St George’s Day, April 23, and continues until the summer solstice on June 21. Thanks to a predicted three month heatwave, this year’s crop could be boosted by up to 20 per cent. The Met Office is predicting that the UK is likely to enjoy above average temperatures between April and June. David Bartle, asparagus buyer for the Morrisons supermarket chain, said: “Growing conditions look like they are going to be perfect. The good weather will not only affect the amount of asparagus grown but also the quality of the crop. We could have the most exceptional year since 2007.” According to market research firm Kantar, farmers have been encouraged to plant more of the vegetable, as UK demand has soared by 540 per cent in the past 10 years.

Last year, British shoppers spent £65 million buying nine million kilos of asparagus. It’s not the only crop to enjoy a good start to the year. English strawberries, raspberries and home-grown tomatoes have all arrived earlier than usual in supermarkets thanks to the balmy weather. Asparagus is said to have aphrodisiac properties. However, some people experience strange smelling urine after eating it due to sulphur-containing amino acids in the vegetable.

COALITION 'DERAILED PROGRAMME TO SAVE LIVES BY REDUCING SALT IN FOOD'

The coalition government derailed a programme that aimed to save lives by reducing the amount of salt in food and then gave industry too much power over a replacement scheme, according to health experts. Stripping the Food Standards Agency (FSA) of its responsibility for nutrition in 2010 – a decade after Labour set it up – slowed progress in cutting premature deaths linked to high blood pressure, the experts claim in their paper in the BMJ. Authors led by Graham MacGregor, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Queen Mary University of London, say salt content in foods was reduced by 10% to 40% over five years from 2006, when the first targets were set. Since 2003, average salt consumption in the UK population fell by 15%, from 9.5g a day to 8.1g in 2011. The overall aim was eventually to cut

salt intake to 6g a day. The authors cite 2010 evidence from the FSA and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence suggesting the programme prevented 9,000 deaths a year in the UK from strokes or heart disease and resulted in healthcare savings of £1.5bn a year.

But there were problems over fixing new salt reduction targets after nutrition issues returned to the health department. MacGregor, unpaid chairman of the campaign charity Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash), and colleagues, one a Cash member, the other an employee, say

the new “responsibility deal” with the food industry was “a major step backwards in public health nutrition”. A further 6,000 deaths a year from heart attacks or strokes might have been prevented if the reduction programme had not been interrupted before resuming under an industry-dominated committee. Last year, targets for reducing salts in different foods were eventually set for 2017 under the deal with industry. The Department of Healthsaid that reducing salt intake in adults by just a gram a day would prevent nearly 4,150 premature deaths a year in the UK. But these new targets do not have the backing of big companies such as Unilever, McDonald’s and Kellogg’s, the authors say. The authors said: “The food industry does not think they or their competitors need to comply as there is no enforcement or proper monitoring of the pro-

gramme. “It is vital that health professionals, politicians and the food industry are made more aware that the food we eat is currently the biggest cause of death and ill-health in the UK. “It is therefore imperative that responsibility for nutrition be handed back to an independent agency, which is not affected by changes in government, ministers or political lobbying.” A regulator that serves the food industry rather than the consumer Felicity Lawrence. A Conservative party spokesman said: “The UK now has the lowest salt intake of any developed country and our work on salt reduction is worldleading. Through voluntary action with industry, we have been able to go further and faster than regulations could. “Three quarters of the retail market and 60% of major high street restaurants have committed to reducing salt intake which will help people make healthier choices when they buy food or eat out.” Luciana Berger, shadow minister for public health, said: “The scale of the challenge we are facing is too great to rely solely on a non-binding and piecemeal deal with a select group of companies. “This is why Labour will stand up to vested interests and take decisive action to give each child a healthier start in life including setting maximum limits on sugar, fat and salt in food that is marketed substantially to children.” Norman Lamb, the Lib Dem health minister, pledged his party

would give more information about salt in food through traffic light labelling on packaging and more information on restaurant and takeaway menus. “We will restrict advertising of products high in salt on TV before the watershed to prevent them being advertised to children.’’ The McDonald’s burger chain said it had worked “continuously” to adapt recipes to remove salt, sugar and fat without changing the taste and provided information about the nutrition and calorie content: “Since 2004, we have reduced salt in our chicken McNuggets by 30%, french fries by 24% and ketchup by 23%. Customers can request for no salt to be added to our burgers and fries.” Kellogg’s said that over the past 16 years it had reduced salt by around 60% in breakfast cereals, which contributed just 2% of the total salt in people’s diets. “We face a number of technical challenges in reducing it further in our cereals. Until we have a fix for these challenges, we won’t sign up to something we know we can’t deliver,” it said. A Unilever spokesman said: “Our global salt reduction strategy is based on a 5 gram intake per day by 2020. We are making good progress on this in the UK with around 90% of products (by volume) meeting this target. “Consumers are accustomed to salt and levels need to be reduced gradually to allow taste preferences to adjust. Technological investment and innovation is also required to make reformulation possible.” Barbara Gallani, director of regulation, science and health, at the Food and Drink Federation industry body, said: “It’s common sense that food producers should be involved in shaping a salt reduction strategy as only a thorough understanding of ingredients and recipes can result in stretching but realistic targets. “Having made great early strides to reduce salt in products, many companies are finding reductions harder to achieve without compromising product safety or jeopardising taste, texture or shelf life.”

A

I have had for many years stomach discomfort after my meals. My stomach feels bloated and full of gas, and sometimes I have pain and occasionally constipation or diarrhoea. I have been told I have diverticulitis, but all the tests and scans I had didn´t show anything. I have been treated with many different medications and nothing really helps. At the moment I am quite depressed and I think it is related to my stomach problems.

We see a lot of people with a similar problem at our clinic, and the results of their diagnostic scans are usually very similar. Typically we would find harmful microbes – bacteria, viruses, fungus and even worms, in many of the abdominal organs. These microbes don´t just appear, but have arisen due to processes that have gone wrong with the digestive tract. The origin of digestive problem is usually from the foods we eat, and over time

This year more than any other we have noticed from the diagnostic scans carried out at our clinic, an increase in the number of people testing positive for potentially deadly microbes. This is even after these individuals have gone through several courses of antibiotics. Recent announcements from researchers strongly suggest that

this creates other more serious complications. One of the unhealthiest foods that we all eat today is wheat based foods, and wheat is unhealthy mainly because it has been genetically modified. In the 1970s, wheat was genetically modified to improve its yield, but the process also increased the levels of toxic compounds in wheat such as gluten, gliadin and lectins. These toxins cause severe inflammation of the digestive tract. Many people who do not suffer from wheat induced illnesses such as coeliac disease may suffer from other

forms of sensitivity to wheat. Wheat sensitivity will cause inflammation of the gut walls which will lead to increased permeability to toxins. When toxins accumulate in our gut it slows down bowel movement and this causes even more accumulation of toxins. Moreover, toxins are harmful to the beneficial probiotics in our gut system and this adds to the problem. Probiotics aid food digestion and absorption of nutrients, and also help boost our immune system. When probiotic levels are low in the gut, it encourages the growth of harmful opportunis-

tic microbes such as E-coli and Staphylococcus and as these microbes also produce toxins, more damage is done to the probiotic colonies. Antibiotics are first prescribed when people complain of abdominal problems, but by destroying beneficial probiotics and even defensive cells and antibodies in the body, antibiotics tend to worsen diseases of the gut. Not long ago, a diagnostic scan we carried out at MedB detected 14 different microbes from a single individual, with half of them active – they are multiplying and

spreading. Disorders of the digestive tract can have an effect on our mood. The human body is more or less a chemical producing factory, and to maintain our well-being, the body must produce and regulate certain beneficial brain chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine. When the digestive tract is not functioning properly, the body is unable to properly absorb and utilize the amino acids required to produce beneficial neurotransmitters, and this can lead to depressive states. With the problems you

WHEN ANTIBIOTICS NO LONGER WORK

we are facing a growing danger from antibiotic resistant microbes. You are probably aware of the deadly effects of MRSA – methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus, but the reality is that several other microbes have also developed resistance even to the most powerful antibiotics available today. Even when antibiotics work, they can still cause severe

damage to our immune system, most especially to probiotics. Probiotics are colonies of bacteria that inhabit the gut system, vaginal canal and ear canal, protecting us against harmful microbes. They also contribute to food digestion and absorption. Low levels of probiotics are associated with chronic digestive disorders. Unfortunately, antibiotics are

unable to differentiate between harmful microbes and beneficial microbes, and tends to destroy every living cell in their path. Prescription antibiotics should always be taken together with probiotics. So what options are you left with? Silver has been known to have medicinal properties for thousands of years. Looking into your nutrition is certainly the first step to take, however you may have other issues due to the long standing nature of your problem. Horoscopes Aries March 21-April 20 You have the advantage in a situation that preoccupies you now, so do not let your doubts make you overcautious, or give in to pressure to change course. It seems a certain battle is as good as won, as you will discover if you bide your time a short while longer. Meanwhile, fine-tune career plans and focus on a very personal goal. It is within your reach.

Taurus April 21-May 21 With your ruler, Venus, travelling through your chart’s financial sector, finding ways to ease your cash flow should be your priority. If you take advantage of the stars and back a hunch on Monday, you could come up with a constructive scheme, so be ready to change course. A new friendship could take centre stage on Thursday.

Gemini May 22-June 21 An unexpected meeting early in the week, or a twist of fate you could not have foreseen, could have important repercussions, so do not try to plan too far ahead. If you keep your options open you will also have the time to focus on career changes, which will put you in a strong position. Trust your intuition and take each situation as it comes.

Cancer June 22-July 23 Being in the right place at the right time is the key to getting what you want from someone who can help you get ahead. Be prepared to change your plans without much warning and accept an invitation to go out and meet new people early in the week. Tensions with a friend or loved one ease from Thursday, when the Sun aligns with psychic Neptune.

By Pandora Leo July 24-August 23 Being in the right place at the right time is the key to getting what you want from someone who can help you get ahead. Be prepared to change your plans without much warning and accept an invitation to go out and meet new people early in the week. Tensions with a friend or loved one ease from Thursday, when the Sun aligns with psychic Neptune.

Virgo August 24-September 23 Someone close could help you realise a very personal dream this week, so ask for their support and do not feel that you should try to reach your goal alone. If you are confident and forward-looking you can also overcome resistance to your plans from an old friend or colleague. Stand your ground and make it clear that you intend to do things your way.

Libra September 24-October 23 Uranus, the planet of creative growth and change, is now due to help you break free from a situation that you find restrictive and strike out in a new direction. Do not let uncertainty about the future make you hedge your bets, or let others tell you how to live your life. If you take a positive approach you will soon get your bearings in the new terrain.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 An easy, flowing link between the Sun and subtle, psychic Neptune puts you in harmony with someone who is now important to you. If you let your intuition guide you, you can forge a deeper bond, so tune in to your inner world this week but do not try to force the pace. Events will work out in your favour if you are true to your real feelings.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Romantic Venus and Uranus – the planet that brings sudden breakthroughs, unexpected meetings, and real growth and change – align across your skies this week. What matters is letting go of attitudes you have outgrown and being open to new people and ideas. Someone you meet now could play a major role for you in months to come.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 A shared work project or endeavour could give you extra common ground with someone unexpected in the week ahead. They could have a lot to offer, so do not let existing ties restrict your freedom. As a Capricorn, you like to plan ahead, but the most important thing this week is living in the here and now, so let events unfold instead of trying to take control.

Aquarius January 21 - February 19 New horizons beckon, so be open to the possibilities around you and prepared to see your situation from a whole new angle. If you stand back and think through where you really want to go from here, you could find that certain long-term goals you thought were cast in stone are changing. Being flexible is not a sign of weakness but of strength.

Pisces February 20 - March 20 Your sense for what to say, and when, and for what remains unsaid, is at its sharpest now, so let no one undermine your confidence in your own judgment. As you are well aware, a certain situation is not what it appears, but others could take time to see things from your angle. Stand back and be patient. It could pay off in an unexpected way.

GET A CLEAN GRIP ON YOURSELF

There are several ways that you can clean your prized golf clubs, from making the most of vending machine style devices found at modern driving ranges, through to a good old fashioned bucket of soapy water on your patio. Here are some time old tips that seem to have done the trick for me over the years, so happy cleaning! What will you need to clean your golf clubs? To clean your golf clubs I recommend you start with a simple plastic bucket, but a bathroom or kitchen sink will do the job just as well. You’ll also need lukewarm water, a splash of washing up liquid, an old towel, and an old toothbrush, nylon brush or brush with plastic bristles. Step 1 Squirt a little washing up liquid into your bucket or sink and fill it with enough lukewarm water to cover the heads of your irons without

the water coming up over the ferrules if possible. Be careful you don’t run the water too hot, as you could risk loosening the ferrules, which join the shafts to the heads. Step 2 Set the bucket down (ideally outside if possible) and place your irons and

wedges in with the club heads submerged and allow them to soak in the warm water for a few minutes to loosen any dirt in the grooves. For the time being leave your woods and putter out of the water. Step 3 After a few minutes soaking time, take each club in turn and use an old toothbrush, nylon brush or sharp tee peg to clean out their individual grooves. This is the most important step in cleaning your clubs, as removing dirt and debris from the grooves will help increase surface area contact with your golf ball at impact, which is how the grooves impart spin to give you added control. Step 4 Once the grooves are clean, run the brush across the sole of the iron and over the back of the club head, removing any mud, sand and grass. Step 5 Once all the mud has gone, use a hose or tap to rinse off the club head, checking the removal of any suds hasn’t revealed any remaining dirt. Next use your old towel to

dry off the club head and give the shaft a quick wipe down to ensure it doesn’t go back into your bag wet. What if my irons are forged? If you play forged irons you should favour a soft nylon brush, but otherwise you can follow all the steps above. If your forged irons start to show signs of rust, made possible when the mild carbon steel becomes exposed during a shot that chips their chrome plating, you can spray the surface with WD-40 and clean them with a nylon brush. Once you’re done this, make sure you wipe them clean with a dry cloth. Cleaning your driver, fairway, hybrid and putter Unlike your irons and wedges, you shouldn’t submerge these clubs in water. Instead, either dip them in and out and rub down with a cloth, or use a wet cloth to wipe them over. Then dry them thoroughly. Cleaning your golf club grips The easiest way to clean your golf grips is to wipe them down with a moist cloth, then dry them with a towel. This will remove any surface dirt and grime, and take no more than a few minutes. If they need a more thorough cleaning, follow these steps: Step 1 Fill a bucket or sink with warm water and add a splash of washing up liquid to create plenty of soap suds. Step 2 Use a wet cloth to collect some suds, and then rub them into the grip. Step 3 Once scrubbed, run your grips under flowing warm

water to rinse them. Be careful not to use very hot water as this can cause the glue underneath the grips to loosen. Step 4 Using your towel, dry each grip as soon as it’s been rinsed off. Check the shafts too, and if water has found its way there, dry them as well. Now with clean clubs you can go out and clean up on the golf course!

The old driver answered, "Let me tell you something, lady … I wasn't staring at you, like you think; that would not be proper." The drunk woman giggled and responded, "Well, if you're not staring at my boobs or backside sweetie, what are you doing then?" He paused a moment, then told her..."well, Ma’am, I am looking and I am thinking to myself, 'where is this lady keeping the money to pay for the fare?”

Barcelona were at their brilliant destructive best on Tuesday night as they thrashed Getafe. Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi both scored twice with Neymar also finding the net and Xavi rolling back

NO DISGRACE IN DEFEAT

Only the most optimistic Elche fan would have expected to get anything from last Saturday's trip to the league champions, but the Ilicitanos fought bravely against a side that were still licking their wounds from their Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid. To be fair though, Atletico were comfortably the better side in

the first half but, for the first time in nine league matches at the Calderon, failed to score. Raul Garcia was twice denied by Elche goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton in the opening stages, while Torres missed two clear chances before the break. Atletico upped their intensity after the break and Griezmann

and Torres both squandered chances before the Frenchman finally broke the deadlock. Juanfran had replaced Siqueira three minutes after the break as the Brazilian limped off injured, and the Spain international swung a cross to the back post. Koke half-volleyed towards the far top corner and Tyton did well to

get across and parry the shot, but the ball spun up towards Griezmann, who calmly nodded in at the near post. With Elche's resistance finally broken, Atleti looked to kill off the game. The second arrived eight minutes later, Garcia smashing the ball inside Tyton's near post from the edge of the area. And 10 min-

before the former Santos forward did give them the lead. With Barca picking holes in the Espanyol defence almost at will, Lionel Messi doubled the lead from a tight angle after 25 minutes.

utes after that Griezmann got his second. Elche failed to clear another ball into their box and Saul Niguez kept the danger alive, crossing towards the near post and Griezmann slid in across Tyton to score again from close range, netting his 22nd goal of a splendid first season with the Rojiblancos. A more important game for the

Ilicitanos was at home last night (Wednesday) to Deportivo, with the visitors five points behind them in the table. An early print deadline for The Courier this week because of the May Day holiday tomorrow means that news of that match comes in next week's edition, along with a report on Sunday night's trip to Malaga.

AWAY JINX CONTINUES

NOVELDA CF 1 CD TORREVIEJA 0

Torrevieja have never won in 11 attempts at La Magdalena, but they certainly gave it a good shot last Sunday against an excellent Novelda side, who look like contesting the promotion play-offs. It was a storming Torry performance with some outstanding play, but Novelda just did enough to deserve their victory. The visitors creat-

ed many chances including an astounding 40 yard run from captain Jorge who stormed past five opponents before running out of steam and shooting tamely into the arms of Marcano. Three times Marcano pulled off fabulous saves, showing why he is regarded the best in the division. His save from Cristian

was spectacular. The speedy Torry winger came on midway through the second half and almost put Torry ahead within a minute of his arrival. He then laid on a ball for Corella who just could not control it as Marcano closed him down. Carrasco, Rafa Gomez and Ferran all had good chances, but no conversion. In the 71st

minute, Ayo(pictured celebrating) received the ball in the box after fine wing work down the Novelda right and placed his shot into the corner of the net for the only goal of the match. Torry though did not relent and Marcano needed to be at his best to keep a clean sheet. Near the end Jorge flicked on a Vicente long throw which

Carrasco pounced upon but from a difficult height could only graze the bar. It was a heartfelt Torry performance missing key players like Alexis, Ruben and Obele. This was Pedreno's first defeat as Torry boss and he will be keen to enhance his excellent home record (of three wins and a draw) against Crevillente this Sunday. This

will also be the supporters last chance to vote for their player of the year, with voting slips available at the entrance. The Gala Awards Dinner in Restaurante El Huertano, Torrevieja is on Tuesday May 19th and tickets are priced at 15 euros from the ground or the Torry Army office in San Luis.

MONTE’S SUNDAY STROLL

CD BORNEO 0 CD MONTESINOS 4

Montesinos easily won their first ever match away to the Cox-based Borneo side in a sun-drenched Sunday lunchtime affair, with Monte now bagging 14 goals in their last three roadtrips. Some early stray passing dominated the early exchanges, before some excellent skills from Carlos helped to find Saez who put

Monte ahead. That strike helped the visitors to ramp up the pressure, with a clever dummy from Saez being latched onto by Rubio to double the advantage. The ever busy Saez effectively sealed up the match after just 35 minutes after some great interpassing from the back led to the youngster feeding Carlos to

make it a third for Monte. It was then just a question of how many goals the visitors could get as Alberto and Vaz both had good chances, and young Saez did a very passable impression of Lionel Messi, as he dribbled past five Borneo players, only to see his striking effort hit the post. Borneo started the second half the better find-

ing more space and passing movements and angles to perpendicular precision and Monte seemed to be tiring in the heat before they made it four, and somewhat unjustly. A Fernando through ball was met by Vaz in the area who slipped and an otherwise good referee amazingly awarded a very harsh penalty. The Borneo players

NAUGHTY BUOY

Eleven boats turned out for the recent third race day in the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) Spring Series, the highest number so far this season. The competi-

tors enjoyed perfect weather, but it wasn’t good news in the first race as a marker buoy became adrift forcing it to be abandoned, after some close competition. The keen

edge flowed into the second race, where only 56 seconds separated the first five boats, with the Catamaran ‘Hamour’ coming in first, with the Faversham 14 second,

and Shoestring Tres in third. Pictured are members from all three crews. If you are interested in joining in, then visit the SAMM web site at www.sailingmarmenor.com

were rightly aggrieved and three yellow cards were produced as they rowed with the official, perhaps forgetting that the match was a lost cause. Vaz took the kick and was saved only for the official to order a retake for encroachment and the striker made no mistake second time round. Minutes later a more justified penalty was

awarded after Vaz was tripped, but the Borneo keeper saved much to the annoyance of the Brazillian. To cap it all, M&A had the easiest chance of match as he shot over the bar with an open goal at his mercy. Monte are back at home this Sunday as they entertain Grupo Caliche with a 5.00 pm kick off.

PATHETIC FINALE ARGUABLY?

This week’s PFA awards show up the idiocy of such a competition. Six Chelsea players feature, what a surprise - but pardon me if I don’t heartily endorse that, only two will do for me. In the twilight of his long, successful career I heartily agree with evergreen John Terry, and it would be very harsh to exclude the rightful player of the year Eden Hazard. Lately the little Belgian has single-handedly secured the Premier League title for the Blues with his 13 priceless goals and eight invaluable assists in 33 games. These were essential lately while his strikers were nowhere - as indeed is his midfield partner Cesc Fabregas in the second half of the season. While three of the Chelsea back four are included, I would point out that until the weekend Southampton’s defence has been better, and the clubs are equal now with 26 conceded. The New Year’s Day massacre when Spurs put five past Mourinho’s men, plus the FA Cup defeat by four goal Bradford assures one of the Blues defensive frailties. Saints’ Portuguese cap-

tain Jose Fonte has been magnificent all season despite central partner and goalkeeping problems not experienced at Stamford Bridge. Ryan Bertrand – ironically ex-Chelsea - has been selected at left back, a good choice as the young man had the dubious role of taking over from the brilliant young Luke Shaw who had moved on to mighty Manchester United in the

close season. Bertrand has been chosen to play for England and he has considerably helped that formidable Saints defence – as has his partner Nathanial Clyne, but the latter choice at right back is Branislav Ivanovic. The Serbian has had a terrific season, but to me his sportsmanship is questionable with too many dodgy ‘incidents’ and cards of both colours cloud this award. I am a big Gary Cahill fan but his performances have been inconsistent, maybe England duty has affected him - and he has huge, healthy competition from Zouma. Fifty year old (!) John Terry just must give it all up soon – but when? For the same reason as Ivanovic I’m not a Nemanja Matic fan, getting stupidly sent off recently for retaliation, no matter how provoked was immature for an experienced professional who should know better. In that area of midfield there

are several better candidates for playmakers of their side in terrific seasons, Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin come to mind. Philippe Coutinho, the only Liverpool player to feature is another arguable inclusion. The little Brazilian came to Anfield with some very big question marks after a meteoric rise to the big time had not come to fruition, but he has been chosen after a maturing year. For me he would be a reserve and this coming season would really be the test where today his world-renowned club are at a massive crossroads. When I saw Sanchez’s name I thought ‘Wow, the Columbian I watched last year at Elche has really done well for himself at Aston Villa - but of course, and rightly it’s Arsenal’s Chilean midfielder/striker/everywhere who has proved his worth to an inconsistent Gunner side which may well finish sec-

ond and win the FA Cup for the second year. The exBarcelona star has had an amazing season with his blinding 22 goals, quite simply the man never, ever gives up and is an example to many other prima donnas in the Premier League some who even play for the same team, which is why Arsenal never quite make itmaybe they will now with Sanchez to inspire them. I read somewhere he would play three times a day if they’d let him – some Arsenal players can’t manage a full match… The goalkeeper chosen is David de Gea, and I think that’s a correctly belated tribute to Alex Ferguson who brought – and persevered with – the Spaniard to inhibiting Old Trafford. Initially the ex-Atletico Madrid star was having a difficult time, but when Louis van Gaal and United were having big problems themselves earlier this season, some of de Gea’s performances and saves were out of this world while playing

behind a leaky defence. The that fact United are in the top four and vying for Europe now as the season comes to a close is a lot down to David de Gea. Yes, yes and yes to Tottenham’s Harry Kane, who only burst into the big time early this year as new Spurs manage Mauriccio Pochettino tinkered away to find his best starting line-up. At last given a regular run, Kane has been a revelation with his 30 goals, a feat not seen at White Hart Lane since the great Gary Lineker over 25 years ago. Pardon me if I take exception to Diego Costa, who went off like a train to set Chelsea on the road to the title, but injuries and a questionable disciplinary record (stamping on opponents is not a nice trait) mar his choice for me, where the only possible choice can be Man City’s wonderfully prolific world class striker Sergio Aguero whose regular record stands out a mile. And I never mentioned the word ‘boring’ once, Jose!

DUNN’S IN FORM

The Murcia-based Supermoto brothers, Ant and Mat Ford Dunn are looking to build on a successful first meeting of the season in March to do well in this Sunday’s second round of the Spanish Supermoto championships, which are taking place locally

at Villena in Alicante Province. Ant(pictured) had a cracking start to the season winning both his races in the 2015 SM road class event at Albaida in Valencia last month, all that after he suffered a horrific broken arm at the end of the last

campaign that threatened his riding career. Mat stepped up to the premier SM Open class and came fifth in his three races, just one point short of fourth. For 2015 the Supermotoland team, sponsored by Murcia based removals compa-

ny ‘Advance Moves’ has a new member of the team, in the form of Mat’s 14 year old son Loris Ford-Dunn. Loris has been learning the ropes in the Youth classes and with limited time on his bike he has started to make good progress.

TIGERS BURN BRIGHT

Huge Hull double wins over Palace and Liverpool had the Tigers fans purring, stopping the slide that had put last year’s FA Cup finalists in trouble. Three home games to come in the final four ought to be good for Bruce’s boys, but the final one is Man United. Anfield angst includes Gerrard’s 500th passing goalessly at the Hawthorns, with equally goalless barren Balotelli boringly on show, and now top striker Daniel Sturridge out till next season. At this rate even the Europa League place looks dodgy, youse. Capital punishment for Quickly Pursuing Relegation, it’s always London teams the Hoops can’t get the better of. Only 18,000 watched as West Ham were there for the taking, but – sigh – even their reliable top striker 17 goal Austin couldn’t take advantage as his penalty went straight at goalkeeper Adrian. When those go in you look brilliant – when they don’t you look a right Charlie… This week Bournemouth achieved the impossible to join Watford and secure promotion to the Prem – well done the Cherries!

NO SCORE BORE DRAW As a football-loving nosey neutral I watched – nay endured - the key Arsenal-Chelsea game on Sunday evening, hoping to see some good goals. Fat chance, I should have known better. Chelsea, as Champions elect were out to spike the Gunners usually heavy artillery and as expected, duly parked the bus everywhere behind the ball. If the Blues had a striker on the field before the clappedout Drogba came on, I didn’t see one. Who needs one when you’re spoiling, and anyway the reserves are all out on loan? Prodigal son-not exArsenal hero Cesc Fabregas, he of the fitting fugitive facemask, made his well-booed first return to the Emirates, but eventually received a grudging cheer when the Spaniard was politically substituted to waste even more time at the end. Yawn… Far better for entertainment top four-wise was Everton 3 – 0 trouncing of Man United, who looked ordinary again, not helped unsurprisingly by the puzzling introductions of Falcao and di Maria. Everton are at last going well again, and United look safe for that all-important top four and Europe place. Brad Guzan has had a good season for Astonishing Villa, but had a match to forget at the Etihad. The American gifted Aguero his 27th goal of the season, plus a free kick from Kolarov somehow sneaked through the leaky Villa wall. The Villains equalised via Cleverley and Sanchez only for Fernandinho to crash in a last minute winner. On a different day/different ref, England’s best Joe Hart would/should have gone off, giving Villa a penalty when the score was 2 – 2. But it was back down to Planet Earth after soaring at Wembley while beating Liverpool, and Sherwood’s revivalists are nowhere near safe. However, three from Villa’s last four are at home, and the last one’s against Burnley. Saturday’s key home match is with improving Everton. N.B The latest Villa starlet is young Jack Grealish - superb footballer but the haircut? It’s the ‘petrified’ look, all standing up shocked on end, and brushed back: terrifying!

SAINTS MARCH IN Pelle’s back in business for Southampton, getting both goals in the 2 – 2 St Mary’s thriller against Tottenham who were twice behind. Saints in seventh look safe for a Europa place, a terrific p erformance from Ronald Koeman’s men given the expensive exodus just under twelve short months ago.
