PATRICK’S FAREWELL

RESIDENTS PAY TRIBUTE TO 10 YEAR OLD ALEX TRELINSKI

A

round 150 people from Torrevieja’s Torrealmendros urbanisation gathered last Sunday to pay tribute to a 10 year old boy who was stabbed to death in an incident in the early hours of Monday May 4th. A 49 year old Spaniard accused of killing his partner's 10 year old son, Patrick, has agreed to pre-trial detention in jail after appearing before a Torrevieja judge. Residents of the urbanisation came together on Sunday for a special ceremony attended by councillors but not Patrick’s mother, Silvia. An impromptu shrine had been created at a bus stop area, with flowers, candles, and cuddly toys, with the tribute ending in

a minute’s silence and the release of balloons. The president of the community, José Castillejo, condemned Patrick’s death and stressed the importance of community life and people being aware of what was happening close to them. He also bizarrely claimed, in a surprising contrast to extensive witness statements last week, that nobody in the area knew that there were any problems in Patrick’s family until the day of his death. The one hour hearing for Patrick’s alleged killer was at Torrevieja’s Violence against Women court which he was taken to after being released from Torrevieja Hospital, after he had been treated for wounds following an alleged suicide attempt.

HEROES PRAISED

ALEX TRELINSKI

Spanish authorities have hailed as heroes three people who helped rescue two survivors from last Saturday's Airbus A400M military plane crash near Sevilla airport that killed four people. "Talking with Manuel, the farmer who saved the injured of the A400M crash in Sevilla. A hero for all of us," Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy wrote in a Twitter message alongside a photo of him meeting with one of

the three rescuers. Manuel and two other people who were near the airport when the military plane crashed on Saturday during a test flight with six people on board, rushed to the scene and helped pull the two survivors from the windows of the plane. They were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The plane was one of the new A400M troop and vehicle transporters manufactured by European aerospace group

Airbus It is the first accident involving the plane, which is assembled at a factory in Sevilla, since it went into service. A military technician has ruled out human error, structural failure or adverse weather conditions in Saturday’s accident. Structural failure such as distortion of the plane or a piece falling off was not noticed by any of the witness at the scene of the accident and so the only other option is some sort of mechanical failure. Witnesses reported a loss of power, but if one engine failed the plane would fly perfectly on the remaining three. Therefore the investigation will now try and discover what caused the loss of power, if confirmed, which affected all four engines.

COPPER COLLARED A National Police officer has been arrested and refused bail on charges of

child prostitution as well possessing and making child pornography. The man,

who holds the rank of Inspector, will have his case transferred from a Madrid judge to an Alicante court, which was already investigating his possession of pornography. Reports say that the 54-year-old lived with his mother in a country house outside Madrid where he allegedly brought children to make pornographic videos in exchange for money and presents. Authorities are said to be searching for another man who appeared in the obscene videos.

SIZZLING COSTA

The Costa Blanca and Murcia regions saw temperatures reach record-breaking May levels yesterday (Thursday), with the thermometer hitting an unprecedented 40 degrees Celsius in some inland areas, way above what is expected at this time of the year, and quite an achievement even for July and August. The sudden rise was caused by a blast of hot air from Northern Africa, but levels over the weekend will almost halve to a more manageable seasonal average of 22 degrees. Figures for May so far in Alicante Province have been the highest since records began.

PEACE RECALLED

ODE TO EUROPE

Torrevieja's Plaza de la Constitución hosted the city's celebrations of Europe Day last Saturday, with entertainment from a variety of nationalities, including British acts, The Phoenix Band, and singer Chloe Leigh. May 9th is commemorated around the European Union and Torrevieja's event started with a speech given in several languages by the Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, before the EU flag was raised to the accompaniment of Ode to Joy from Beethoven's ninth symphony.

QUESADA BOOST

The 70th anniversary of the ending of hostilities in Europe was commemorated in a special Victory in Europe Day ceremony in Torrevieja last Sunday. The event, at La Siesta Church’s Memorial Garden of Remembrance was coordinated by the Torrevieja Branch of The Royal British Legion with a service led by Revd Andrew Rea, a member of the Torrevieja Anglican Chaplaincy Clergy team. The RBL paraded their Standards together with those of the local exService Associations from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force, and afterwards wreaths were laid by the RBL branch president, Gill Burden, along with other representatives.

SCAM STOPPED

A gang of six people, including an 81 year old, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Alicante and accused of ripping off insurance companies by staging fake road accidents. The Guardia have logged 45 cases where they say the alleged fraudsters believed to be family members and friends skimmed some 150 thousand euro on bogus insurance claims, having staged collisions between cars or motorbikes. The claims started to ring alarm bells with authorities due to the almost identical injuries and accident reports (often weeks apart) that were being filed between 2007 and this year, with the Guardia starting their investigations last year.

SANDY SHORES Quesada’s Avenida de las Naciones is to get a half a million euro spruce up, which has been backed by all of the political groupings on Rojales council. It will be the first major improvement project since the road was built in the 1970’s, and will include the installation of new street lighting and storm drains as well as the widening of pavements. On-street car parking is likely to be reduced across the half-kilometre stretch of the road.

Work on repairing Torre de la Horadada's beaches that suffered storm damage at the beginning of April has hit top gear. With the help of emergency central funding, the Pilar de la Horadada municipality has so far brought in four thousand cubic metres of sand to the Torre beach, which is a quarter of what is planned to be shipped in. The council are hoping for government approval and backing for a more permanent solution to what is an annual problem.

TIGHT FIT

An eight-year-old boy was found in a suitcase as a woman tried to smuggle him into Spain at the Ceuta border in North Africa. The child was detected by the Guardia Civil as the case passed through a scanner. When opened the case he climbed out and said his name was Abou and he was in bad state of health. The woman carrying the case was a 19-year-old Moroccan. and the Guardia said they had located a woman from the Ivory Coast, with a temporary residents permit in the Canary Islands, who admitted she was the mother and had been waiting to collect him. FERRY CROSS ON THE RUN LA MANGA

The new ferry route between San Pedro del Pinatar and La Manga should be launched "within weeks" according to Murcia's public works minister, Francisco Bernabé, who visited the area last week. Bernabé said that work was in its final stages which will see the link run between Lo Pagan and the Tomás Maestre harbour and would run annually between March and October, with four daily return trips during the high season of July and August.

CHECK UP TIME

Bars and restaurants across the Mar Menor and the rest of the Murcia region are going to be getting visits from inspectors during the summer to make sure that they are not ripping off their customers. The Murcian government will be checking that all prices are displayed and that diners and drinkers get a receipt, as well as being told that a complaint form is available if they are dissatisfied. 60 complaints against establishments were received last year, and so far Murcian authorities have got 40 by the end of April.

PUMPED UP

Alicante-Elche airport has seen over two and a half million passengers going through it in the first four months of the year, a rise of three point six percent on the figures over the same period in 2014. 924 thousand passengers travelled to and from the facility at El Altet, a hike of one point nine per cent on the previous year’s statistics, with British travellers dominating with 380 thousand, followed in a distant second by German flyers on 64 thousand.

LAW AND DISORDER

Crime figures across the Costa Blanca region show a mixed picture according to recently released figures from the Interior Ministry in Madrid. Murders fell across Spain, but in Alicante Province, the statistics show 12 killings between January and March, as opposed to seven in the previous quarter. The general crime rate though has fallen by four point six percent, with robberies and burglaries showing the biggest drop at over ten per cent. In Torrevieja, the crime average dropped by one point three percent, with Orihuela having a five point eight percent fall, and Elche recording a four point three percent drop.

Work on Gran Alacant’s new water pumping system won’t be finished much before the end of the year, which means that residents are likely to get a repeat of last summer’s raw sewage escaping through pipes around the Cabo Santa Pola area. The two million euro tender, which will take eight months to complete, has been given to Proaguas Costablanca which will see a new pipeline linking up a station in Gran Alacant through to the El Faro pumping station in Santa Pola.

Close to a thousand competitors pounded the streets of Almoradi last Saturday in five and ten kilometre road runs, watched by enthusiastic spectators. Local officials said that the event had attracted a record number of entrants.

A ROCKIN GOOD DAY

Six bands helped to rock Torrevieja into last Sunday evening in a special Rock Against Cancer event staged at the Monroes Music Pub. Proceeds went to the cancer charity AECC, with a mixture of mainly British and Spanish rock fans enjoying the entertainment that blasted out across Calle Apolo in Torrevieja’s La Punta district.

DRIVE OFF

Spain's highest legal body, The Supreme Court, have dismissed a 311 million euro compensation claim by the operators of the loss-making AP7 toll road between Torrevieja and Cartagena. The case was launched back in 2010 over the N332 being upgraded to a dual carriageway. The operator, AUSUR, had been suing the Ministry of Development for compensation claiming that the doubling of the N332 highway at points between Guardamar and Pilar de la Horadada had taken away drivers from their route. They came up with the claim of 311 million euros to help subsidise them over their full franchise period between 2009 and 2048.

PARASOL POWER CRAZY COUPLE

A Valencia-based energy firm has invented a 20-watt solar panel which would allow customers to charge up their mobile phones from outside seating areas of pavement cafés. Textil Energy says the panel can be fitted to the fabric of parasols on bar patios, and as it is made of flexible material, can adapt to different shapes and sizes. An electrical junction box is then attached to the parasol poles, with three USB ports in it for customers to charge their phones, tablets and laptops at no cost to the bar owners. It has been designed in such a way as not to look an eyesore when attached to the parasol.

EASIER ON KRYPTON

An on-off duty fireman from northern Spain has been fined by police after one of his passengers, also a fireman, decided to do his best Superman impression – by hanging half his body out of the car window. The driver, from Cantabria, was fined for dangerous driving, as well as endangering the lives of himself and other road users and not properly taking care of the passengers in his car. The stunt took place near the town of Los Corales. In the video, the backseat passenger leans his upper body out of the window, his arm outstretched. He knocks on the driver's window and asks for directions to Corales, which the driver tells him is "over there". The video came to the attention of local police after it went viral on YouTube. They opened an investigation to find the men, who also face disciplinary action from their fire chiefs.

CANINE CHAOS

An Elche police officer shot dead a dog that attacked a 64 year old man, after two animals had escaped from a farm. The incident happened northwest of the city at Peña de las Águilas with a male boxer mastiff mix dog inflicting multiple bite wounds on the man, who also suffered multiple bruising. Local police shot the dog to free it from feasting further on the victim, who was taken to Vinalopó Hospital for treatment, and was then discharged. The dog's owner said that the animal had escaped before, but this time he had chained it up, but it still got loose and got under a hole in a fence before running away with its female companion, who was taken to a pound. Further investigations found both dogs were appropriately registered and vaccinated.

SCOTCH BROTH

Another incident involving rowdy Brits travelling to Spain has seen six Scotsmen arrested on Mallorca, after 'shocking behaviour while drunk' on board a Ryanair flight. The group flew out from Glasgow's Prestwick Airport at 7.00 am last Thursday May 7th to Palma, and their behaviour was so bad, the crew were forced to call the police prior to landing. Ryanair said the police were called ahead after the drunken Scots acted in a disruptive manner during the two hour 50 minute flight from Scotland. Speaking to the Daily Record a witness said: 'The Guardia Civil came and arrested the six men, the air crew had called on ahead to alert them to what was happening. It was 7.00 am yet these folk were already steaming. It was shocking behaviour.'

A massive 59 percent of all purchases made by tourists in Spain are made in retail stores, according to the Business Association of Textile Trade and Accessories. Meanwhile 15 percent of purchases are made on watches and jewellery, 13 percent in department stores, 4 percent on electronics and 3 percent on sports goods.

FAIR ENOUGH

Spain jumped to first place this year up from fourth place in the last ranking in 2013, and up from eighth place in 2011.The country was rated first globally for cultural resources, fourth for supporting tourists' online searches for entertainment and fourth for infrastructure."With beautiful heritage sites throughout the country, it boasts top marks for its cultural resources, and also scores highly for business travellers with a significant number of international conferences," the report said.

Horse shows and carriage processions were part of Torrevieja's five day May fair which finished last Sunday. Special church services were staged, as well a range of musical and dance entertainment, plus a Seville fair, all wrapped up by a closing choral concert on the Sunday night.

QUICK SAVE

A quick thinking football referee saved the life of a player towards the end of a match in Los Alcazares as they were playing Sucina. With just a couple of minutes remaining, 20 year old Alcazares player Fernando Muñoz collapsed and lay unconscious. As some sort of panic broke out, Adrian saw how bad things were and didn’t hesitate in calling in medics onto the pitch straight away. He then opened Fernando’s airway with a tube being put in which stopped him suffocating to death, before he was taken by ambulance to hospital. Adrian added that he just did what anybody else with first aid training would have done, with a lot of praise heading his way from everybody connected with the Los Alcazares club.

Little

Smile FAG ASH AND

DAVE SILVER I WAS enjoying a quiet moment in the pub the other evening when there was a commotion outside. 'Please keep the noise down!' bellowed Dave the barman in the direction of the street. 'My regulars are trying to get enough money together to pay for a round but any sudden noise ruins their concentration. 'Consequently, their already-limited ability to do simple arithmetic suffers and they have to start counting their pennies again. Still, don't worry about me. I'm only here to make a living.' There were two things one could say in Dave the barman's favour -- he thought the world of his customers and he was never ever sarcastic. I'm lying of course but let's not allow the truth to spoil a good story. Anyway, before any of us could make a move to investigate the ruckus outside, the cause of the commotion stepped into the pub. A police constable approached the bar accompanied by a familiar face -well, not just his face. The rest of him was familiar to us, too. The policeman cleared his throat and said: 'As I was proceeding along the high street, I observed this gentleman acting suspiciously in the doorway of the bank. 'On further investigation, the aforementioned person claimed he was not attempting to break into the premises but was merely averting his head into the shadows in order to light a cigarette. 'He further stated that he

THE COP: A TALE OF TWO BILLS

always ignites his cigarettes in the doorway of this alehouse but because of the direction of the prevailing wind, he was finding it easier on this occasion to strike his matches in the shelter of the aforementioned bank.' The police constable concluded: 'This man claims to be a regular visitor to this establishment and indeed says he is acquainted with you all. If someone could corroborate his status and support his version of events, then I can leave him here and be on my way.' There was a silence as our dear friend Fag Ash Bill (for it was he) looked imploringly at each if us in turn, waiting for somebody to get him off the hook. But nobody spoke up for

the simple reason that none of us dared state that the poor guy was a regular frequenter of our jolly little tavern. For the simple truth was that Fag Ash Bill was banned from the hostelry -HIS choice because he enjoyed smoking but the law did not permit him to practise his pleasure indoors. It was thus also true that none of his mates was going to say otherwise to the policeman at the risk of getting themselves into trouble. So we all stayed shtum as the cop escorted Bill off the premises and promptly arrested him for allegedly plotting a bank robbery. 'But I'm an innocent man!' cried Bill as he was led

away down the street. And then he pleaded pitifully to the crowd of passers-by who had stopped to see what was going on: 'Would somebody at least chuck us a fag!' Silence prevailed in the pub as we desperately resumed pooling our change in order to purchase a much-needed round. 'If only Andromeda Arkwright was here. She'd have dealt with this terrible state of affairs,' muttered Indoor Lou. He was referring to our pub group's guide and mentor who would indeed have known what to do. 'Where is she anyway?' queried Fearful Phil. 'She should be here when we need her.'

'It's not her fault,' said Dave the barman who missed Andromeda's presence more than any of us because she would pay for a round of drinks with proper folding money instead of the loose change we attempted to amass. 'She's visiting her friend in Lytham St Annes and won't be back until very late.' 'So what do you reckon?' I asked in an attempt to move the situation on a bit. 'I'll tell you what I reckon,' said Daft Barry. 'I reckon that people always say they live in Lytham St Annes when in fact they mean next door in Blackpool. It makes them sound posh.' 'Thank you for your most relevant contribution, Barry,' I said scornfully. 'But I don't

think it will bring us any closer to getting Fag Ash Bill out of his police cell.' 'Anyway, I prefer Thornton Cleveleys,' said Daft Barry. 'There's a lovely chippy there.' 'Traitors! Turncoats! Backstabbers!' shouted our former guide and mentor Ol' Red Eyes from his customary position on the floor. 'If I were still in charge of leading you lot, we would have had Fag Ash Bill not only out of jail by now but also out of the country.' But before the oldest member of our pub group could explain what HE would have done, the sleepy fellow had sunk back into his semi-coma. And then, just as swiftly as our problems had begun, the dreadful situation ended with the shadowy appearance in the hostelry doorway of Fag Ash Bill himself. He was smoking two cigarettes simultaneously, a sure sign that he had been under stress. 'Thanks a bunch, fellas,' he said sarcastically. 'You really came to my rescue there.' 'Sorry, Bill,' we chorused. 'But please appreciate our position. We couldn't lie to that policeman about you being allowed in here. Anyway, how did you get out of the cop shop?' 'The desk sergeant knows me and was able to vouch for my innocence,' explained Fag Ash Bill. 'He also advised me that with friends like you lot, I'd be better off smoking outside a different pub.'

PAY PER SIT

In the Catalunya region, seven hospitals have begun charging relatives of sick people 5 euro to use reclining armchairs, provoking complaints that it discriminates against those who don't have cash to spare. One of the seven hospitals, the Hospital de Granollers, has installed 96 reclining armchairs in its 300 rooms and if visitors want to lie down, they have to pay five euro for the privilege of fully reclining the armchair. Special payment machines sell cards which are used to work the chairs and family members can buy tickets per night or in a five night block for 25 euro in the pilot scheme. Angry relatives have complained that the chairs discriminate against those who cannot afford to pay to use them.

Despite numerous projects being turned down, Murcia University has come up with another proposal for building a walkway across the Mar Menor. Ecologists have always dismissed the idea, saying it will damage the delicate ecosystem, but designers have come up with an alternative, which would avoid the fragile sea beds and connect the northern part of La Manga with San Pedro del Pinatar. The walkway would be less than three kilometres long, and would also serve as a way of access to the fishing weirs, to enable maintenance and conservation.

Life

Dog

12

PETER SINGH With the warmer temperatures upon us, I thought I’d write about hyperthermia and how it affects dogs. Hyperthermia is a term that describes a rise in body temperature, which typically occurs as a response to a trigger, such as inflammation in the body or a hot environment. When a dog is exposed to high temperatures, the heat stroke or heat exhaustion can result. Heat stroke is a very serious condition that requires immediate medical attention, and once the signs of heat stroke are detected, there is precious little time before serious damage - or even death - can occur. Dogs do not sweat through their skin like humans - they release heat primarily by panting and they sweat through the foot pads and nose. HEAT STROKE SIGNS INCLUDE: Increased rectal temperature (over 104° requires action, over 106° is a dire emergency) Vigorous panting Dark red gums

Check Out: www.thedogyouneed.com

Email: peter@thedogyouneed.com

HOW TO COOL DOWN A HOT DOG excessive amounts at a time. Call or visit your vet right away - even if your dog seems better. Internal damage might not be obvious to the naked eye, so an exam is necessary (and further testing may be recommended). PREVENTING STROKE:

Tacky or dry mucus membranes (specifically the gums) Lying down and unwilling (or unable) to get up Collapse and/or loss of consciousness Thick saliva Dizziness or disorientation WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT HEAT STROKE: If you have even the

slightest suspicion that your dog is suffering from heat stroke, you must take immediate action. First, move your dog out of the heat and away from the sun right away. Begin cooling your dog with cool water. You may place wet rags or washcloths on the foot pads and around the head, but replace them frequently as they warm up. Avoid covering the body with wet towels, as it may

trap in heat. DO NOT use ice or ice water! Extreme cold can cause the blood vessels to constrict, preventing the body's core from cooling and actually causing the internal temperature to further rise. In addition, over-cooling can cause hypothermia, introducing a host of new problems. Offer your dog cool water, but do not force water into your dog's mouth. Try not to let your dog drink

HEAT

NEVER leave your dog alone in the car on a warm day, regardless of whether the windows are open. Even if the weather outside is not extremely hot, the inside of the car acts like an oven as temperatures can rise to dangerously high levels in a matter of minutes. Avoid vigorous exercise on warm days, and when outside, opt for shady areas. Keep fresh cool water available at all times. Certain types of dogs are more sensitive to heat - especially obese dogs and brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, like Pugs and Bulldogs. Use extreme caution when these dogs are exposed to heat. Some dogs can recover fully from heat stroke if it is caught early enough.

Others suffer permanent organ damage and require lifelong treatment. Sadly, many dogs do not survive heat stroke. Prevention is the key to keeping your dog safe during warmer weather. www.thedogyouneed.c om is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. About

Life A WHOLE LOAD OF BALLOTS

TONY MAYES

If I had made a 100 pound accumulator bet last week that the Tories would win an overall majority at the general election, and that Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage (who on Monday was back in charge!) would resign as party leaders, and that the nodding donkey, Ed Balls, would lose his seat, I would be a multi-millionaire now, the odds would have been so high! No-one would have guessed it. The pollsters got it so incredibly wrong, and there’s been loads of theories as to why. How could so many people who were asked their voting intentions be out and out liars? How could so many closet Tories be ashamed to disclose it? I actually think there´s a greater force at work and that´s woman power. I think more women than ever before voted for women candidates, while others made that final decision just as they draw the cross on the ballot paper, and that´s the mystery element that wasn´t taken into sufficient account by the pollsters. I also think this whole miserable election has been appallingly damaging for Britain. I´ve said before that it´s becoming increasingly difficult to govern the country and it´s got a whole lot worse now. We´ve seen a result built on people´s fears. Fears over immigration; fears over austerity; fears over the Health Service; fears over the EU, and fears over the seemingly uncontrollable march of nationalism, particularly in Scotland and to a lesser extent in Wales and if Labour had been given power they would have handed mountains of cash over the borders, trading it for votes. Votes based on people´s fears are not the best basis on which to get the most sensible of results. As far as Scotland is concerned, I think the majority of people the English side of the border will soon be saying enough is enough. If there was a vote in England tomorrow,

there would be an overwhelming vote to tell the Scots to f... off, have your independence and good riddance. For the Scottish Nationalist Party, only full independence is good enough, but when the referendum went against them they pushed for full fiscal independence - in other words to have the power to raise taxes and spend the money north of the border. But now, it seems, they are not quite so sure. Why? Because the price of oil has hit the floor and they have discovered they would not be quite so well off as they thought they would be from the North Sea, where oil reserves are dwindling anyway. So, what is all this about? It´s the politics of greed. The Scots want to milk England when the going is good, and to pull up the drawbridge if they think Scotland would be better off separate. They want to have their cake and eat it. Perhaps Scottish people might learn a lesson to have a basinful of unbridled Socialism which so many of them seem to clamour for, bedazzled by the smooth talking far left Sturgeon. Perhaps if they lived in a Sturgeon dream-world country where the welfare benefits were showered around like confetti, paid for by rising taxes and rising debts and rising prices until the country hit the financial buffers and couldn't pay for its NHS and over-spending, they might learn a salutary lesson! So, I hope Cameron stands up against Sturgeon - but if he has to do what the Romans did 2,000 years ago when they too had enough of the Scots, then so be it. With no Lib Dems to stop him, Cameron can take a chainsaw to Britain´s unsustainable levels of public spending and rid the country of people who seem to think they deserve a lifetime living on benefits or producing a multitude of kids to prevent them doing a day´s work. It should have been done long ago before so many peo-

ple believed it right to live on benefits and screw the system. Had that not happened Britain would not have been such a magnet for immigrants. One final word on the election. Britain has a reputation of being a fair minded nation. How does that sit alongside more than four million people voting UKIP and having only one MP, or one million people voting Green and being similarly represented? Put another way, the

that this is fair or "British". The two party politics maintained by the first past the post system is appallingly bad and undemocratic and it´s about time it was changed. Sadly it won´t happen until the majority of people cease to vote either Tory or Labour. Ironically, while Nigel Farage failed to win at South Thanet in Kent, voters piled in to support UKIP in the council elections, and Thanet is the first council in

some areas. Prices of homes on the Mediterranean coast rose nought point two per cent in March - the first increase since January 2008, since when average values across fell by a huge 48 percent. In addition, Spanish house building is finally under control, with planning applications for new homes just four per cent of the level in the boom days of 2006. Spanish banks, which once had a million repossessed homes,

roundabout, don´t brake and drive straight across. If it looks as if the driver on the roundabout isn´t going to stop, you brake at the very last moment, hoping it will scare the other driver to death. It´s happening more and more, and the worst offenders are female twentysomethings. OK, I hear you female drivers saying, here I go again, making sexist remarks about women drivers. But my wife has been with me and has

SNP won more seats than their national vote share suggests, picking up 56 MPs while having only four point seven percent of all votes cast in the UK. By contrast, UKIP got just one MP – nought point two percent of Commons seats - despite winning nearly thirteen percent of the vote. The Greens got three point eight percent of the vote, just behind the SNP, but has only one MP. The Lib Dems got two point four million votes and the Democratic Unionist Party won just 184,000, but both ended up with eight seats in Parliament. On average around 34,000 were cast for each Tory MP election, 40,000 for every Labour MP, 26,000 for the SNP and 300,000 for every Lib Dem. No-one can possibly suggest

the UK to be now controlled by UKIP, with 33 out of 56 councillors. Shame those who voted UKIP in local elections didn´t have the courage of their convictions for the national election. Not everyone likes his brand of politics, but Britain is worse off without Nigel´s bulldog spirit in Westminster. And now, let´s turn to some good news, especially for those of us who own property in Spain. After what seems an eternity, it's over. No, not the General Election, but the long-running Spanish housing crash. After seven years of consecutive declines in prices in Spain, there are now signs that Spanish house prices have bottomed out, and even started to rise in

now have a reasonable 120,000. All that is translating into buyers returning to find a dream home in the sun. British newspapers and exhibitions are now, once again, promoting Spanish property, and, as demand increases, watch out for prices to rise. People living in our area have already experienced house rises, thanks to the Zenia Boulevard factor with people wanting to live within a few miles of the shopping complex and also near the coast too. But a price rise experienced over the country will do much for our investment in housing which has suffered big time in recent years. There’s a new sport of chicken in Spain. It goes like this - you drive at least 50kmh towards a

seen these kamikaze drivers for herself and can vouch for their dangerous actions. In fact, hardly a day goes by without our seeing some dreadful driving here in Spain. And as for female bad drivers, either they are girl racers doing mad things, or older ditherers. Of course, we also see some appalling antics of male drivers, overtaking at the most obviously dangerous places is the most prevalent. While I am on the subject of bad driving, can I make yet another plea for drivers to indicate when they are turning right or left. Can´t drivers here multi-task indicate as well as drive? It really isn´t that hard and with just a little practice, motorists will crack it and make driving for others just a little more pleasurable.

Life

JEANETTE ERATH It really does seem that summer is very much here and a lot earlier than normal. The climate seems to have been playing with us here on the Costa Blanca over the past few months! Just when we had a nice day it would turn and the black clouds would begin to cast cold shadows over us and the rain would come. Last year was windy but this year surely must have broken records for the sheer force, at least here where I live. I am in a quite open place without much in the way of protection from the elements. From my front door I can see a motorway in the distance and to another side there are more open fields. I love living here, as there is more freedom than in my flat, and my son can go out on his bike whenever he likes. I can sit on my porch and watch him ride safely up and down the road. The winter seems to have lasted forever and my boy is now accustomed to sitting

indoors on his laptop watching videos, however now the sun has finally broken through and it seems we have at last seen the end of the bad weather, we can begin to go out more and once again enjoy the freedom of this beautiful country. Over a month ago I decided to paint the railings around my house. I have a couple of friends who have volunteered to help however the weather was always stopping me. Now though there is no excuse. I was talking to my other half and he asked me when I wanted to paint it, as he is also helping, and my reason for not doing it before was, I feel, quite legitimate, although he did look at me with an expression that stated without words ´well, she is blonde!´ Here is the reason I gave him and the one I feel is extremely valid:- I wanted to wait this long because if I have to spend several hours outside painting railings, I may

GETTING IT LICKED

as well wait until the weather is good enough to get a bit of a tan. I don´t like painting railings. I´d much

weather finally improved enough for the painting to begin. My friends were busy working so it was

rather splosh about on a canvas, so if I have to paint something like that, then I believe that there should be some benefit for me, and a touch of colour is my reward. So, with that in mind, the

down to my man and me to get the railings looking like new. I had a strappy top and shorts on and as I sit writing this, I look a bit like a zebra, only with red and white stripes instead of black and white! I do like to

build my tan up gradually however, we are all aware of the dangers of too much sun exposure and burning, however as we live in Spain we have all summer to build that brown glow, however I was longer than anticipated painting and so caught slightly more sun than I wanted. However I did have cream on so it could have been worse! Now the painting is done, I can get on with all those other tasks that have been neglected over the cold months, such as cleaning the pool area. I´m sure there are still toys and clothes around the pool from last summer! I need to cut down the jungle that is fast beginning to appear outside my front door, and whoever decided that fast growing plants are a good idea for a house, needs to be spoken to as whatever it is that has been planted next to the steps of my house is beginning to take over the stairs and soon it´ll be a lottery as to whether

we make it down in one piece. For these types of jobs, I have to be in the right mood, and if my mind isn´t on the job, then it becomes so much harder. I know that one day, when I have some free time, I will just do the rest of the fence and all the other jobs that go with running a house, and in a few days all the outside tasks will have been completed and I can sit back and rest, at least until the jungle starts to take over again! The best thing about doing these jobs is the knowledge that summer has finally arrived and we have months of beautiful weather to look forward to with those long summer nights sat on our patios or balconies with a long cool drink in hand. Although I may have thought the same a few times this year, I now really believe the good weather is here to stay, so raise a glass with me and enjoy the next few Spanish months.

Spanish

Life Say it in Spanish Spanish 171

JEANETTE ERATH This time of year people begin to think about summer and all the things we are going to do. Trips back to visit friends and family are made and sometimes our lives begin to focus away from learning Spanish. I hope that even if you are one of the many that return to the UK for the summer or spend some months here and a few there, that you continue your studies wherever you are. Remember The Courier is always available online and so there´s no excuse to miss out on improving and learning. I hope you´ve had a good week and have been practising your verbs and making sentences using whatever vocabulary you know and maybe learning a few new words. This week as promised we are going to get a little more complicated, for some of you this will be too advanced and for others it will be too easy if it is the latter then it can always be used as a revision

tool, if it´s advanced keep it for later when you get to this point of learning. We are going to start with reflexive verbs, there are eight reflexive pronouns in Spanish and they don´t really have an English version which makes these verbs slightly difficult to get used to however once you learn to use them they become second nature. The reflexive pronoun for I is me the pronunciation is different from the English me, and it´s more pronounced meh however you need to listen to it to get the sound absolutely correct, reflexive verbs are used when we talk about things we do to ourselves and most verbs can be made reflexive by meaning and context, however I´m going to give you a commonly used reflexive verb ducharse which means to shower oneself and as it´s something that we do to ourself (or you do to yourself etc) it is reflexive and again we can see that by the se ending on the main verb duchar. The ch sound is as in church so it´s pronounced do

char say. It´s a regular ar verb and remember the reflexive pronoun goes first in Spanish. Now let´s make the sentence ´I have a shower´ = me ducho. I hope you know how to say every day, so let´s say I have a shower every day, think about it for a few seconds before reading on. That´s it: me ducho cada día. If you want to say you shower every day or ask the question do you shower every day? The

form is the same, we need to say te (you) duchas (have a shower) cada día/todos los días. Another common verb is levantarse which means to get up/rise, so how do we say I get up? That´s it, me levanto, then add the time for example, at eight o´clock is a las ocho, put them together me levanto a las ocho, now let´s add every day: me levanto a las ocho cada día (todos los

días). When we want to say we do something to a part of our body we don´t use the word my, your etc. because we are using the reflexive verb we use ´the´ for example, to brush as a reflexive verb is cepillarse therefore I brush is me cepillo, the word for teeth is los dientes, so if you want to say I brush my teeth you have to say me cepillo los dientes using the direct article not the

possessive pronoun. Of course cepillar can be nonreflexive as well, if you are brushing your dog or cat then it´s not reflexive, and then we use possession, so I brush my dog is (yo) cepillo mi perro. The same is true of all other verbs, even shower and raise can be used reflexively or not, a common verb which is used reflexively or not in equal measures is lavar or lavarse to wash. For example, say I wash the car, yes it´s (yo) lavo el coche, but if you want to say I have a wash (I wash myself) we have to say me lavo, so how do we say I wash my hair? The Spanish for hair is el pelo so we put them together to say me lavo el pelo. Remember if you are not sure of the reflexive pronouns revise them or learn them and remember to use them when we could say in English to myself, to himself, etc. Next week we will carry on with putting some sentences together. Keep practising your Spanish and use it whenever you can. ¡que tengáis una buena semana!

Coronation Street - Anna meets Faye off the school As we return to Emmerdale tonight, with the search for Lachlan on, David reluctantly agrees to talk to Rakesh, worrying he'll get in trouble for when he did actually kidnap Lachlan. Rakesh tells David to sit tight but seems irked when Priya appears enthused by the fact David may need to put his Portugal plans on hold. In Coronation Street, Anna’s furious to learn from Tim that Faye pulled a fast one and left him with Miley whilst she goes go-karting with her mates. Anna meets Faye off the school coach and in front of her friends, hands over Miley, telling Faye she needs to sort her priorities out. How will she react? In the second part, Liz admits to Tony she’d love to move back to Spain but feels she can’t because of Steve. Tony points out that part of Steve’s problem is that he still lives with his Mum at the age of 40. In Eastenders, The final day of Dot's trial has arrived and the tense atmosphere leads to Charlie and Fatboy clashing as they blame each other about the mess that Dot is in. Charlie even attempts a last-minute plan by telling Keeble that he murdered Nick, but she isn't fooled so easily and calls his bluff. Later, Charlie urges Dot's loved ones to stay strong as they all await the verdict. When they are all called back into court, will Dot be found guilty or not guilty of murder?

The Great British Garden Watch Rugby fans are in for a treat on BBC One today as the Rugby League Challenge Cup dominates the afternoon schedule. Mark Chapman presents live coverage of the Challenge Cup sixthround clash between Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants. Since last winning the cup in 1999, Leeds had lost six Challenge Cup finals until they finally ended their hoodoo by beating Castleford at Wembley last year. They begin their defence of the trophy with a trickylooking clash against Huddersfield. The Giants, who last lifted the cup way back in 1953, narrowly lost to Leeds when they met in the Super League in February but were dramatically denied by a late Paul Aiton try. Meanwhile, over on BBC 2, the hidden cameras are set up for The Great British Garden Watch. Lucy Cohen's film goes behind the net curtains to discover amateur naturalists all over Britain who have transformed their gardens into intense filming environments in the pursuit of capturing the daily and nightly goings-on amongst the wildlife population. From foxes treated like family to the social lives of hedgehogs, these dogged naturalists will stop at nothing to capture that elusive shot. Combining a love of nature with huge advances in amateur camera technology, this film explores the extraordinary lengths taken to capture the activities of birds, foxes and pond life, while offering a charming insight into the British population's relationship with their gardens. While the people we meet are drawn to their gardens for all sorts of reasons, what becomes clear is that they learn as much about themselves as the animals they capture on film

TV Choice 00:00 Family Guy 02:15 Murder in Successville 02:45 Nick Helm's Heavy Entertainment 03:15 Bluestone 42 04:45 Great Movie Mistakes 05:00 Close Home Fires Home Fires is tonight´s pick of the day in ITV, a drama series set in a Cheshire village during the Second World War. The isolated community could not feel further away from the impending bloodshed and battlefields, yet it is not immune from the effects of war. Everyone must make sacrifices as war starts to have an impact on the village. As Pat's marriage deteriorates, Kate and Jack's relationship intensifies. The war-based drama is Napoleonic later on BBC One as Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell features a time when magic once existed and is about to return. So begins a dangerous battle between two great men. Eddie Marsan, Bertie Carvel, Charlotte Riley, and Alice Englert star in the seven-part mini-series, which has been adapted from Susanna Clarke’s bestselling novel by Peter Harness and directed by Toby Haynes. Meanwhile, on BBC 2, The Detectives is a three-part series that gets inside the mind of a new breed of detective, specially trained to investigate sex offences. The programmes show what it is like to tackle the crimes that carry the toughest sentences, yet the lowest conviction rates. This episode follows the first part of the high-profile historic-abuse investigation into Ray Teret, a Manchester DJ and friend of Jimmy Saville, accused of a string of sex offences against schoolgirls in the 60s and 70s. Going behind the headlines, it shows what it takes to crack a case when the crimes were committed more than 30 years ago. This is no easy task when there is no crime scene, no CCTV and no DNA evidence to help the detectives.

Emmerdale - Jai Takes Rachel by Surprise In our first trip of the week to Emmerdale, Sam's nervous as Rachel is determined to have it out with Jai today after Sam's recent revelation. Later, a composed Jai takes Rachel by surprise and soon she is trapped, alone and screaming… Meanwhile, in Coronation Street, David’s nervous as he prepares for Max’s custody hearing. David’s lawyer paints him as the doting Dad but David’s good mood is short-lived when Callum’s lawyer launches a character assassination, dragging up David’s criminal past. Faye begs Anna to let her stay another night at No.4. Tim assures Anna it’s fine and Sally is forced to agree. When we return for the second part, calming himself, David returns to court and apologises to the Judge. The Judge orders a full Cafcass report but what decision will be made about Max’s living arrangements in the interim? Liz confides in Michelle that with Steve now on the mend, she feels the time is right to take the plunge and start a new life in Spain with Tony. Finally, in Eastenders, Dot's family and friends learn the outcome of her trial. Has she been found guilty or not guilty? Meanwhile, Vincent phones Ronnie and pretends to be Carl White. He then warns her that he knows the truth about what happened - she killed Carl. After receiving a worrying threat, Ronnie once again asks Phil for his help - but is Phil out of his depth this time?

Ousted Laurel continues to leave messages for friends and family who continue to blank her. In the café, Ashley's worried for Laurel and alarmed when Bernice reveals she's been calling Gabby too. Marlon concedes agreeing to talk to her, but is determined it is all he’ll do. Marlon warns Laurel to stop hassling everyone, insisting she has to prove she's a good mum by staying away until she's sober. But will Laurel take heed of his advice, or find another way to get to the children? Down in Walford, Shabnam is trying her best to avoid Dean after her mistake yesterday, but now Masood is becoming suspicious over her strange behaviour. Things get worse when Dean turns up at the Masood house to confront Shabnam about what she said, forcing her to admit that she had a baby after their one-night stand. Failing to tell the full story, Shabnam lies that the baby died from complications. Meanwhile, it's a busy time for the Moons as they are preparing to start a new life together, but Kat can't help fearing that it's all going to fall through. Eastenders - Stacey and Kush Get Close In tonight´s hour long Emmerdale, Doug and Marlon worry of Laurel’s whereabouts having not returned home all night. Meanwhile, Laurel wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings and whilst initially dazed and confused, she is soon hit hard by reality; she’s slept with a total stranger. Brenda's incredulous when Bob suggests they help Carly buy David’s shop by getting a loan themselves. Meanwhile, Pollard and Alicia are baffled when David refuses to accept any offer from Chrissie for the shop. Alicia realises it's because of Lachlan and is gutted David has reacted like this. The estate agent tells Alicia and David they shouldn't pass up an opportunity to sell the shop but David is determined not to give the Whites’ what they want. However, when Alicia goes to see Chrissie later, a plan is forged which could see Alicia, Chrissie and Carly all get exactly what they want. Or could it backfire in Alicia’s face? In Eastenders, Kush returns to the Square but grows frustrated over Shabnam's frosty attitude towards him. Stacey tries her best to get Shabnam on the right track, but she refuses to tell Kush the truth. Instead she tells Kush about her new relationship with Asim, making things worse. Later, Dean confronts Stacey over Shabnam's baby, demanding to know whether the child is still alive. Kush breaks up the row and sends Dean on his way, before heading back to Stacey's place for a drink. Kush and Stacey end up sharing a kiss while tipsy, before Stacey spills the beans to him over Shabnam's big secret...

Box LOOK WHO´S BACK!

Soap

Your Weekly round-up of the soap news

Last time we looked at some of the characters leaving the cobbles of Coronation Street this year. This time, we´re having a look at who we can expect to make a return! Clearly, this article contains spoilers, so only read on if you want to know the inside secrets of who is returning and maybe a plot line or two. It´s only right that we start with the return of head teacher Brian Packham, as we already said that his return will coincide with the departure of Julie Carp. Peter Gunn took a break from Corrie in December of 2013, and it now expected to return in late Spring, according to sources at ITV. Peter Barlow is returning to attend the funeral of his step-mum Deidre Barlow, as the soap is planning an emotional send-off for the character played by Anne Kirkbride who sadly died recently. The funeral is set to be broadcast in June with actor Chris Gascoyne having said, “They asked me to go back to the Street for a couple of episodes and of course I said yes”, confirming that “It is only right that Peter would be there, and if I can I will always want to keep that continuity. The show has been very good to me. I worked with Annie for 15 years and I loved her. She was a really

The American Axe

lovely woman and I miss her”. Having left on maternity leave in November, actress Paula Lane will return “soon”. Central to a continual storyline involving a range of characters at the moment, the return of Kylie Platt is unlikely to be a quiet affair, especially considering the custody battle taking place over her son Max. There are also a couple of “unusual” characters set to appear on the street, unusual in the sense that they will be played by actors not known for this type of role. Although many thought it was an April fool´s joke,

Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding will be playing the girlfriend of Tracy Barlow's ex husband Robert Preston. Carpet fitter Robert married Tracy in 1996, before the par left for London and Tracy returned in 2002 after having an affair. Sarah Harding said, “I am extremely excited to be joining Coronation Street. As a fan of the show it is a huge honour for me to join the cast. I can’t wait to get started!” Finally, comedy actor and TV presenter Paddy McGuinness will play Dougie Ryan, a “wilderness survival enthusiast”, hitting our screens in

August. The story will see Dougie giving “Bear Grylls and Ray Mears a run for their money” when his character meets the Tinkers and the Dobbs on a camping holiday. Meanwhile, after last week´s news of a big cast cull, Corrie bosses have offered some future reassurance to at least two cast members after it was revealed that both Brooke Lee Vincent and Kim Marsh have been given long-term contracts, so we can expect to see both Sophie Webster and Michelle (surname removed for spoiler reasons) on our screens for some time yet.

Over in America this week, a time has come which is now a much anticipated annual event, when network bosses review some of our favourite TV shows and decide whether to renew them or not. Sadly, for autumn 2015 to mid-season 2016, the axe is falling on some of the shows which have refreshed the schedules, including in the UK, but the good news is that some of them are set to stay. One such surprise is that reality “talent” show American Idol has been axed, although it will return this year for its last season. Is this the end of the TV talent show? Probably not yet as The Voice has been renewed, along with Dancing with the Stars. Raymond Reddington will survive into next year with a brand new series of The Blacklist, although, sadly, it´s nevermore for The Following and Forever will not be returning. Homeland copy State of Affairs has also been axed, which is a shame as they never did explain what happened to the submarine in episode 1. We´re heading back to Chester´s Mill for another

series of Under the Dome, although, with their new found exit last time, the question here is will we remain encased? Utopia, Revenge, Two and a Half Men, and even Glee are to be no more, along with Gracepoint, the American remake of a British show with some of the same actors, including David Tennant, speaking Americanish, are all set to be axed. “You´re Fired” is the phrase that producers have been hearing all week, but one team that will be repeating it again and again are the people behind Celebrity Apprentice, as that has been confirmed for a 15th series, and the X-Files confirmed returning to our screens in January, 2016.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Lancastrian Paul Abbott has penned two of the best drama series on UK TV in the last 20 years, namely the political conspiracy thriller, State of Play, and then the wonderful antics of the Gallagher family in Shameless, which totally went to pot when Abbott stopped writing it. He’s back with a bang with a cop comedy drama show set in Manchester called No Offence, and it’s wonderful. Not many writers can get away with having you in stitches one second, and then dealing sensibly with serious material like over serial attacks on Down’s Syndrome sufferers. No

OFFENSIVE FUN

Offence will give offence to some viewers unfamiliar to Abbott’s work, but so what! The pace is breakneck and perfect for Channel Four, home of Shameless. Joanna Scanlan is a scream as the inspector who doesn’t mince her words and her behaviour, and I loved it to bits. I noticed that Paul Abbott’s own production company put this enjoyable show together, so can the boss write a memo to himself insisting that he continues to write all the scripts himself, especially when the second series comes along. He’s also proved to still have the talent, which sadly disappeared from

Jimmy McGovern in the now-mercifully cancelled Banished. It seems like ages since the UK General Election and staying up all night to watch the results. Not surprisingly the BBC got the lion’s share of view-

ers, but I have to say that I’ve never seen so many technical mistakes and bloopers on a BBC election programme. There wasn’t enough focus on the results when they started to come in, and that was a really big

strength for Sky News, who delivered big, with excellent instant result graphics and declarations from literally everywhere. Some of my fellow watchers on internet forums agreed that it was the worst BBC election night they had seen, and that doesn’t augur well for the future. The majority Conservatives really want to put a dagger into the heart that is the license fee. That would be a massive mistake, as never more than now (and also here in Spain for that matter) do we need wellfunded public broadcasters to compensate for the ever decreasing standards of the commercial

channels. I’m so pleased that James Corden has proved to be a hit with his US late night talk show for CBS. It does beggar two obvious questions, namely why wasn’t he given a chat show in the UK, and why isn’t his US one being screened over the pond, as opposed to all the countless channels filling up their schedules with dross? I’ve caught a few of his shows on the internet, and they really would work well on a British outlet. Meanwhile, we can enjoy Corden having fun tonight on Sky One in the welcome return of A League of Their Own.

I have attached a spread sheet which I have had problems with; when I change the figures at the top the total at the bottom remains unchanged. Would you please have a look and see if it’s the same when you use it.

Hi Dudley, you could try resetting the printer from within Firefox, do the following… 1. Type about:config in the Location Bar and press Enter. A list of preferences will appear 2. Find the preference print_printer 3. Right-click that preference and select Reset 4. Restart Firefox and see if the problem is resolved

A

A

Hi Sam, interesting one this, but I have the answer – formulas have been set to manually update on this spread sheet. You can turn on automatic updates again by doing the following in Excel…

ADVICE: Sheila wanted to know how to make text larger in her web browser. Hi Richard, in my Gmail, it is all very tiny print, how do I get it to stay bigger please? Sheila.

Q

1. 2. 3. 4.

Open up the spread sheet in question. Click the Microsoft Office Button (top left), and then click Excel Options. On the Formulas tab, click Manual under Calculation options, and then click OK. Save your spread sheet

…try to update some cells, you should find that your formulas now calculate automatically.

ADVICE: Uffe wanted to know whether to upgrade to Windows 8.1

Hi Sheila, when you are in Internet Explorer, press CTRL and the ZERO key at the same time and that will reset your zoom, which I assume is causing your problems.

A

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternatively why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

Q

Hi Richard, One short question, please: Is it worthwhile upgrading to Windows 8.1 (from 8)? Thanks in advance.

A

Hi Uffe, yes you should upgrade to Windows 8.1 if you have Windows 8 already, there are a number of security and appearance enhancements that make it a much better operating system.

SPOTTING SPEED TRAPS MADE SIMPLER Getting caught speeding is one of those times when we all perhaps feel a little bit guilty, but our strongest emotion is often towards those who have caught us breaking the law, almost disbelief at the audacity of the reporting officer for having the downright cheek to fine us, when it is in fact usually the driver who is in the wrong. Spotting a camouflaged car may be a hobby for some, although many others are still oblivious until the uniformed officers flag them down or a fine arrives in the post. Seasoned experts my well know what to look out for in some vehicles, whether it is a nipple like protrusion coming from the front of the car, a slim silver box perched on the window, or a person on board in bright clothing watching a screen, spotting a radar car was not quite as easy as it seemed. In addition, there have also been a lot of hoaxes about new hidden radars in the past, a favourite being a picture of a Skoda car with a radar hidden in the roof box. Although in actual fact it was a real photo, the car was not Spanish. We do know where it was from b the way, but we´ll not spoil that surprise. Although it was not common practice, there have been occasion of radar equipment hidden behind

dustbins or parked cars, between trees or in tunnels, but now all of this is a thing of the past, as the DGT promote their new transparency method of operation in speeding clampdowns. The DGT has already published the location of some mobile radars, with 305 routes already highlighted in the two areas under focus. This information is in addition to the publication of fixed cameras, which they have done for some time. By the summer, the DGT aim to increase awareness of 1,200 routes where mobile radars will be in place at some point. In addition, the option of hiding radar equipment was taken away in February, now the radar must be visible. But not only that, the camouflaged radar cars will also be carrying an information board

which the officers will put on the road warning drivers of their presence. Although the sign may be somewhat discreet, around 30 centimetres across, it is intended to warn drivers that they are in a current speed trap area. The signs will also be placed near to the standard speed warning signs on the road too, so there is no excuse that you “didn´t know the speed limit”. With the intention of speed traps being to ensure that drivers adhere to the maximum permitted speed, the overall aim is of safety. Speed checks are always on roads with a high incident rate, many of which have seen fatal incidents in the past and many of those with excessive speed as a contributing factor. Although the DGT website will publish the location of the radars, they will not be the precise position that the officers are located, but rather a route over a fixed distance. Therefore, if a driver checks the location, it is hoped that they will be conscious that somewhere out there a speed trap is waiting, and so their speed will be reduced over more of the route than if the driver just happens to spot the radar or sign. By warning drivers of their presence, it is hoped that more drivers will slow down and the roads will become safer as a result.

Burritos with everything as Britain falls for Mexican food Number of Mexican restaurants across UK has risen by 71% in the last year The UK is riding a Mexican culinary wave with burrito outlets now the fastest growing type of eatery on the high street. In the last year alone, the number of Mexican restaurants, led by brands such as Wahaca and Barburrito, has risen by 71%. The growth has even outstripped the upmarket burger phenomenon, which has seen newcomers Byron and Five Guys mount a serious challenge to McDonald’s and Burger King. But it is the humble burrito, which translates as “little donkey” in Spanish, that is top of the fast food growth league. Over the last five years burrito chains have opened an average 57% more outlets per year compared

to a 16% annual rise in posh burger joints over the same period, according to a report by property advisory firm CBRE and data company Retail Locations. Just over a third of Brits have now visited a Mexican or TexMex, making it the fourth most popular ethnic food, behind Indian, Chinese and Thai takeaways.

Birmingham-based Indian burrito chain Wrapchic, which combines influences from two of Brit’s best-loved ethnic foods, is the UK’s fastest growing restaurant chain in percentage terms, growing 900% from one to 10 outlets in the last three years according to research from Horizons, the food service analysis firm.

Directions Combine yogurt and cool whip until thoroughly combined. Spoon yogurt combo into mini muffin tins. Put one animal cookie "handle" on each. Freeze. Enjoy.

What? The Magisso Cake S e r v e r (Lazyboneuk.com, £11.99), a hollow, enclosed gripping element with semi-rigid sides that can slice, pick up and deposit uniform portions of cake.

Why?

Key Lime Desserts Ingredients 2 (6 oz each) containers of lime yogurt. 1 (8 oz) container of cool whip lite, thawed. 24 animal cracker cookies.

NICE RICE

Rice will be high on the menu in 30 Torrevieja restaurants, as they'll be taking part in the third staging of 'Arroces de Torrevieja'

from this Monday, May 18th. The seven day event will see a variety of rice and paella dishes being produced, including octopus, rabbit, snails, and lobsters as ingredients, with meal deals being offered to customers rang-

ing between 18 and 30 euro. Council officials say the event is important in promoting the cuisine that Torrevieja can offer, and it attracts visitors from around Alicante Province and the Murcia region.

Cutting a victoria sponge with a knife is the definition of “a piece of cake”, but it’s not particularly stylish. This elegant contender is going to take care of that.

Well? “The idea for the cake server came to designer Maria Kivijärvi while she was sitting and drawing on the rocks of Lake Näsijärvi in Finland.” This kind of detail, printed on the inside of the box, lets you know we are dealing with un peu de pretension. In fact, the box itself is the first clue: a matt white oblong, the front face of which is a magnetised flap, opening on to a viewing window. Inside, one gets a first glimpse of the Magisso Cake Server, plushly embedded in a suede berth. In outline it is an elemental swoosh, resembling an abstract painting of a whale or a wave. I remove it from the

casing, not sure whether I need to plug it into my computer via USB or worship it as a god. In the end I plunge it into a chocolate cake. It cuts with ease, which isn’t hard; it’s cake. A gentle grip secures the wedge and releases it just as reliably, standing up on the plate. It helps that my cake is firm – a softer or stickier cross-section will be more fiddly. But it works, and washing up is a doddle. I eat my cake, thinking about Kivijärvi on Lake Näsijärvi. The names are very similar. Does she own the lake? Can you own a lake? I understand how such conditions might lead one to develop a new martial arts philosophy or commune with the transcendental. What sort of mind decides to redesign the cake slice? There is very little wrong with a cake slice. But progress progresses, I guess.

Downsides? You can’t vary slice size! For health reasons, I only ever eat one portion of cake, so I like to make sure it is absolutely massive. Also, it costs £11.99. The unwieldy shape of the cake server makes storage annoying, too. But you are probably meant to keep it on a velvet pillow in its own room anyway.

Packed lunch ideas inspired from warmer climes

A better way to pack sunshine into your lunch box this summer Few people can afford a trip to the southern hemisphere for some winter sun. We might gingerly venture to European destinations in search of a fleeting ray, but more often than not we are punished with rain on holiday and news of a record-breaking heatwave back home. Meanwhile, we are doomed to languish for a few more weeks in our pasty skin waiting for some

sun. What better way to bide the time than to transform lunch into a holidaythemed feast. And be thankful that you don’t have to shake sand out of your shoes … Start your imaginary Grand Tour with a Greekstyle grilled prawn and halloumi salad. Slice the halloumi and griddle with prawns until golden and charred in parts. Make a dressing of plenty of olive

oil, lime juice, honey, lime zest, a touch of fish sauce and sliced red chilli. Add the cooked halloumi and prawns to chopped avocado, sliced little gem, coriander, and drizzle over the dressing. If simplicity is what you’re after, send your tired ham sandwich on a French exchange and upgrade it for a baguette jambon beurre. If you can get your hands on a fresh

baguette (those bake-athome jobs are also good and perfectly sized for sarnies) and some good cooked ham from the supermarket deli counter, you’ll remember why the country is so obsessed with ham sandwiches. Slather the bread with plenty of unsalted butter and freshly ground black pepper. You may be sipping your cup of soup contemplatively to the sound of rain dashing against your window, but swapping it for tacos will almost make you believe it’s summer. Stuff hard corn taco shells (from most supermarkets) or top soft ones with finely shredded iceberg, tinned sweetcorn (roasted in a hot oven with a good pinch of dried chilli and a glug of olive oil until it starts to char) and avocado mashed with lime juice. Sometimes the nicest lunches are the ones that aren’t lunch, but rather simple things you nibble with wine. Replicate this laissez faire attitude – sans booze – with an easy

tapas snack: cut a small baguette in two, then halve it down the middle. Toast lightly and rub with the cut side of a clove of garlic. Pack into a large container. Finely chop a large tomato, add salt, pepper

and a splash of olive oil, and pack into a separate container. Come lunchtime, top your garlicky bread with a spoonful of tomato. A few slices of serrano ham would not go amiss.

Allergies and Pets DR MACHI MANNU Pets can be a source of joy, however keeping them can be very distressing for people who suffer from pet allergies. Studies show that approximately 15 percent of the population is allergic to dogs or cats. In a study of 341 adults who were allergic to cats or dogs and had been advised by their physicians to give up their pets, only one out of five did. What’s more, 122 of them got another pet after a previous one had died. It’s clear the benefits of pet companionship outweigh the drawbacks of pet aller-

gies for many owners. Pet allergies occur because glands in the animal’s skin secrete tiny allergy-triggering proteins, called allergens that linger in the animal’s fur and also float easily in the air. Allergens are present in the animal’s saliva and urine, too, and may become airborne when saliva dries on the fur. The major allergen of the domestic cat is produced in the saliva and sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin. Cats' constant cleaning causes this allergen to be spread on their

fur. When it dries, it flakes off with the slightest movement. Cat allergens are as sticky as tape, so they easily adhere to clothes, carpets, and furniture. Dogs with soft, constantly growing hair may be less irritating to some individuals, although this may be because they are bathed and groomed more frequently. One dog or cat of a particular breed may be more irritating to an individual allergy sufferer than another animal of that same breed. Here are steps you can take to protect against pet allergies.

Create an “allergy-free” zone in the home—preferably the bedroom—and strictly prohibit the pet’s access. Consider using impermeable covers for the mattress and pillows. Clean frequently and thoroughly. Bathing your pet on a weekly basis can reduce the level of allergens on fur by as much as 84 percent. Even cats can become accustomed to being bathed! Cannabis pills 'do not help dementia sufferers' Cannabis pills may not be effective in treating the behavioural symptoms of dementia, new research suggests. The study suggests that medical marijuana pills may not help treat dementia symptoms such as aggression, pacing and wandering. The research, published online by the journal Neurology, did, however, find that the drug dosage used in the clinical trial was safe and well-tolerated. Study author Doctor Geke van den Elsen, of Radboud University Medical Centre in Holland, said: "Our study results are valuable since any firm evidence of the effectiveness and safety of medical marijuana in this disease area is scarce.

"Ours is the largest study carried out so far on evaluating this drug for behavioural symptoms of dementia." For the study, researchers randomly selected 50 people with dementia and behavioural symptoms to receive 1.5 milligrams of medical marijuana or a placebo pill three times per day for three weeks. The medical marijuana pill contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the main chemical involved in marijuana's psychoactive effects. The main study measurement was change in scores on a test of behavioural symptoms called the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, assessed at the start of the study and after two and three weeks.

The test scores improved for both the medical marijuana and the placebo groups, but there was no significant difference between the scores for the two groups. There was also no difference between the two groups for participants' quality of life, daily living activities or pain-related behaviour and pain intensity. Dr van den Elsen said improvements in the placebo group could be due to several factors, including attention and support from the study personnel, expectations of patients and caregivers and training of nursing home personnel. People in the two groups had a similar number of mild and moderate side effects. There were no serious side effects in either group. Dr van den Elsen added: "Since the side effects were mild to moderate, it's possible that a higher dose could be tolerated and could possibly be beneficial. "Future studies are needed to test this. A drug that can treat the behavioural symptoms of dementia is much needed, as about 62 per cent of dementia patients in the general community and up to 80 per cent of nursing home residents experience these symptoms."

DR MACHI MANNU

Q

I am a 62 year old diabetic man, and I’ve had great trouble controlling my sugar levels in the past years. I was diagnosed diabetic 20 years ago and placed on Metformin, 1 tablet a day. But over the years, my blood sugar level has mostly been erratic, and I’ve had to first increase my medication dose, and then add on insulin injections. Even with insulin my blood sugar levels are still mostly high. I am worried because lately I’ve been having pins and needles, and from what I know that’s not a good sign. What can I do?

A

Anyone suffering from diabetes must understand that maintaining a healthy diet is the most vital aspect of therapy. The sad truth is that even doctors are confused about a healthy diet for diabetics. Foods high in refined carbohydrates spike blood sugar levels in diabetics and should be avoided. Complex carbohydrates are healthy for diabetics, except for the kind found in wheat called amylopectin. Amylopectin is different because unlike the other kinds of complex carbs, it begins digestion in the mouth and not the stomach. This is the reason why 2 slices of whole grain bread will raise your blood sugar levels higher than 6 teaspoons of sugar. You should also understand what the Glycaemic index

or GI of food means, and know what foods to avoid. You can find charts on GI online or from various health centres and clinics around. Glycaemic index is a measure of how high blood sugar levels rise after eating different types of foods. Glucose has the highest GI of 100. Refined carbohydrates such as wheat, corn, potato and manioc flour have high GI numbers, and should be avoided by diabetics. Foods rich in fibre such as nuts and vegetables have a lower GI rating and should make up most of the diet of diabetics. These foods slowly release sugar into the blood, and that way insulin is also gradually secreted into the body to properly regulate sugar levels. Most processed drinks contain high fructose corn syrup that spikes blood sugar levels, and should also be avoid-

ed. Diabetics are also low in chromium, and this has led some researchers to even suggest that type 2 diabetes is an age-related chromium deficiency disease. Chromium is needed to make a protein known to enhance the function of insulin. Chromium is found in foods such as vegetables, honey and condiments such as black pepper and thyme, but you will be better off taking supplements to ensure that you are getting appropriate amounts. The pins and needles are a sign of diabetic complications as you have pointed out. You can prevent diabetic complications that can affect the eyes, kidneys and small arteries of the hands and feet by taking supplements called R-lipoic acid. Horoscopes Aries March 21-April 20 A conversation this weekend could make you feel unsure of where you stand, or uncertain what you want, long-term, from someone close. You could well find your feelings have been changing, so let things be and wait until you see your way ahead more clearly. Career tensions ease from Thursday. Do not make a snap decision now.

Taurus April 21-May 21 Listening to advice from friends or colleagues could create more problems than it solves. Trusting your own judgment is the key to dealing with financial issues, so carry on along your chosen course, regardless. With the action planet, Mars, helping you to push through some important changes later in the week, you hold a winning hand.

Gemini May 22-June 21 Dynamic Mars moves into Gemini this week, giving you the energy and motivation to brush obstacles aside and get a great deal closer to your current goal. But do not try to plan too far ahead, or let others make decisions for you. Your hunch about the way to handle certain problems is correct. Stand your ground and do things your way.

Cancer June 22-July 23 Much as you might wish a certain situation was not cast in stone, there is nothing you can do to change it, or not yet, so do not try to swim against the tide. If you relax and let things be, you could start to see your options from a very different angle. Getting what you want could be a question of diplomacy and patience.

By Pandora Leo July 24-August 23 Social life comes first this week, so ignore pressure from a loved one to fit in with their plans, and do not hesitate to branch out on your own. The contacts you make now could boost your confidence and help you realise a very personal dream. They could also help you leave a recent problem in the past. Be open to the opportunities around you.

Virgo August 24-September 23 With creative, lucky Venus and the forceful planet, Mars, travelling through your chart’s career zone, not a lot can hold you back. If you do things your way and ignore advice from someone close, you can make real progress now, so have faith in your own judgment. An unexpected meeting later in the week puts you in a very strong position.

Libra September 24-October 23 The key to solving recent problems is being sure of what you really want long-term, so set aside time to think your options through, then stop weighing up the pros and cons and make a hard and fast decision. Feedback from someone unexpected later in the week could open your eyes to how easy it would be to reach a certain goal.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 What you really want from someone close, and what you are prepared to offer in return, could preoccupy you now. Do not make a snap decision. With truthful Mars and diplomatic Venus both travelling through the area of your skies that rules your most important bonds with others, you can afford to play for time. Do not hesitate to do so.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 What you really want from someone close, and what you are prepared to offer in return, could preoccupy you now. Do not make a snap decision. With truthful Mars and diplomatic Venus both travelling through the area of your skies that rules your most important bonds with others, you can afford to play for time. Do not hesitate to do so.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 If you are to put your current grand plan into action, you need to focus on the minor details now, so streamline your routine and do not let your social life distract you. You can also sidestep a potential problem if you disregard advice midweek. The key to real success, long-term, is believing in yourself and in what you have to offer.

Aquarius January 21 - February 19 With so many planets gathering in your chart’s zone of adventure, the most important thing this week is to give yourself more freedom to manoeuvre. Minor work commitments and domestic chores can wait, so give yourself a well-earned break and put your personal interests high on your agenda. Events could take an unexpected turn later in the week.

Pisces February 20 - March 20 This week’s clash between romantic Venus and your ruler, Neptune, suggests that someone you are now involved with could attempt to put you under pressure. As a Pisces, you do not like to be pinned down, or forced to make decisions when you are not ready. Make it clear that you intend to do things your way, and in your own time.

Golf HOW TO BUNKER A Weekly look at the Golf scene

THE CHEATS

IVIE DAVIES Honesty is golf’s cornerstone and, perhaps more than any other sport, golf depends on self-regulation. This is why such a cloud forms over those suspected of willful cheating. Upheld accusations can lead to individuals being ostracised from the sport and can impact the game. So cheating is understandably something of a sensitive subject in golf. So, how prevalent is “cheating” in amateur golf and how should it be dealt with if suspected?

golfdavies@gmail.com

Firstly a distinction should be made between accidental and deliberate cheating. In the vast majority of (if not all) competitions completed, the rules will be infringed. Someone will misunderstand how a drop should be taken; another may clip a branch from a tree while practice swinging before an awkward shot. These individuals will not knowingly have broken the rules. However, it’s every golfer’s duty to have as good an understanding of the rules

as possible and, with a pocket-sized “Rules of Golf” produced by the R&A, that easily slips into any golf bag, there should be no excuse. Deliberate cheating is when a golfer knowingly and willfully breaks the rules in order to lower their score: A ball thrown down in the rough or kicked from under a tree, a five claimed when six shots have been taken. This is the type of behaviour that is totally unacceptable in golf. These deliberate breaches of the rules “remain rare.” There are clear disciplinary procedure guidelines. Many who witness an infringement of the rules will choose to ignore it. They tell themselves it doesn’t matter: “he’s only cheating himself.” This isn’t true. If someone breaks the rules, knowingly or otherwise, it can affect everyone in the event. That person may go on to win a prize or to post a score that lowers the Competition Standard Scratch. If an individual thinks he’s gotten away with breaking the rules deliberately, he’ll be encouraged to do it again. Challenging someone who has deliberately cheated is difficult, particularly if you’re the only witness. Some may be willing to confront the individual at the time; others might refuse to sign the individual’s card at the end of the game. In these cases the accuser must be prepared to stand by what they’ve seen. In some cases, telling the secretary of a suspected infringement may be the most appropriate action. As an independent party, they can make the individual aware of the suspicion without a direct accusation. Sometimes it may be a fairer course of action to give an individual a chance to modify their behaviour than to destroy their reputation permanently.

There was a particular case of a promising young golfer who played each week with a couple of old boys who, frankly, had no idea what he was getting up to or what he was scoring. It fell to the Secretary to broach the subject. He invited the youngster into his office and simply said, ‘Now I don’t know if you’ve been getting up to anything you shouldn’t have, but there are suspicions.’ I simply made him aware and gave him the chance to rectify the situation. There were never any complaints about him again.” A director of Rules at the R&A confirms that when rare willful breaches of the rules do occur a golf club committee has recourse. In circumstances where deliberate breaches do occur, in addition to the penalty under the specific Rules itself, Rule 33-7 enables the committee to apply a penalty of disqualification in view of the exceptional circumstances surrounding the case. One way that certain types of cheating can be prevented is through vigilance. When playing competitive golf there seems in recent

years an increasing number of playing partners that are unaware of scores. Frequently you hear the question, ‘what did you have there?’ Golf is, of course, an individual game but in my opinion it’s also your responsibility to pay attention to what your playing partner is doing when you’re marking his card. As juniors look to emulate the huge success and reap the rewards secured by young players like Rory McIlroy, it’s perhaps explicable that some look to accelerate the process, to try and lower their handicap to reach certain tournaments for example. It’s at beginners level that education on the importance of integrity in the game should be instilled, and it’s generally possible to be a little more direct when dealing with suspicions of cheating in the beginners game and to quickly put a stop to it.” WHAT I THINK… CARRY A BOOK Instances of accidental rule breaking will always occur, but every competitive golfer should make it a priority to gain as comprehensive an understanding of the rules

as they can. Always carry a rulebook as backup. IS IT RARE? It’s undoubtedly rare for incidents of cheating at club/society level to escalate. But anecdotal evidence would suggest deliberate cheating has occurred at most clubs/societies. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? If you witness accidental cheating (i.e. a misunderstanding of the rules,) it should be easy to point out the mistake and the individual concerned ought to be thankful for the correction. If you witness a deliberate cheat in competition, you owe it to the other competitors to take action: Either to confront the individual at the time, or to refuse to sign his card (and to explain why). The shock of being caught may be enough to ensure they never do it again. IS IT A PROBLEM Golf remains the most honest of games and the overwhelming majority of participants play with the utmost integrity. Yes, almost every club/society has had incidents but these are generally dealt with quickly and efficiently with a view towards education.

TITTER ON THE TEE KNOW YOUR RULES

After being married for 48 years, a wife asked her husband to describe her. He looked at her for a while, and then said, "You're an alphabet wife... A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K." She asks, "What the hell does that mean?" He said, “Adorable, Beautiful, Cute, Delightful, Elegant, Fabulous, Gorgeous, and Hot". She smiled happily and said, "Oh that's so lovely, but what about I, J, K?" He said, "I'm Just Kidding!" The swelling in his eye is going down and the doctor is fairly optimistic about saving his testicles.

QUESTION

After holing out at the 16th green, Michelle and Jeff manage to inadvertently exchange balls. Michelle plays Jeff’s ball from the 17th tee and Jeff plays Michelle’s ball from the 17th tee. When putting out on the 17th green, Michelle realises the error. What is the ruling? A: Michelle incurs a penalty of two strokes B: Both Michelle and Jeff incur a penalty of two strokes C There is no penalty to either player

ANSWER C: There is no penalty to either player A ball played from the teeing ground into the hole is not a wrong ball, even if it does not belong to the player (see Definition of “Ball in Play” and “Wrong Ball”).

BERLIN BOUND BARCA BAYERN MUNICH 3 BARCELONA 2 (Agg 3-5)

Barcelona reached their first Champions League final since 2011, despite Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich salvaging pride in the return leg in Germany. Trailing three-nil from the first leg,

Bayern revived their hopes through Medhi Benatia's early downward header. Barca levelled when Luis Suarez squared for a tap-in from Neymar, who drilled in after the pair combined again.

Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller both curled in as Bayern won on the night, but Barca still progressed to book a date against Juventus in Berlin on Saturday June 6th.

Pedro scored a fantastic bicycle kick as Barcelona beat Real Sociedad last Saturday to move to within one victory of the La Liga title. Barca are four points clear with two games left following Real with draw Madrid's

Valencia. After a frustrating first half, Neymar Lionel home headed Messi's cross to give Barca the lead. And substitute Pedro wrapped it up late on with a brilliant acrobatic effort from the penalty spot.

Barcelona, who have now kept seven consecutive clean sheets, need only champions beat to on Madrid Atletico Sunday or final-day oppoLa Deportivo nents Coruna, to lift the La Liga title.

HERRERA’S GIFT

Having secured their status in the Primera Division the previous weekend at Malaga, Elche were unlucky not to have got something out of the match, which at times they dominated, especially early on. Joel Campbell gave Villarreal a first-half lead in the 26th minute when he

capitalised on a goalkeeping error to nod in at the back post for his first goal since joining the club on loan from Arsenal in January. Elche started the brighter of the two sides, and Villarreal's Juan Carlos was forced into an early save before Pedro Mosquera's long drive beat

the keeper, only to rebound off the post. However Villarreal came back strongly, with Dos Santos firing over before playing a crucial part in the only goal of the game. Dos Santos made space down the right and worked his way into the area before pulling the ball back to Bruno

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal says they can say "goodbye to the league" after slipping four points behind Barcelona with two games left. Real came from two goals with draw to down Valencia, last Saturday

but Barca's win over Real Sociedad has put them in control. Carvajal said: "At home we couldn't slip up, we've done that and we say goodbye to the painful It's league. because we wanted to fight until the final day,

although we'll keep on doing that." Ronaldo had a penalty saved before Pepe gave them hope with a header and Isco curled home from 20 yards to level. Real are away to Espanyol this Sunday.

after the goal, and could have been further ahead had Elche not managed to deflect Eric Bailly's header for a corner. Trigeuros went close twice in the second half but could not make the decisive strike as Elche clung on, while substitute Cristian Herrera posed a constant

threat but could not produce the quality to beat Carlos on the day. Sergio Pelegrin went close in the final moments before Mosquera hit the bar with an acrobatic effort, but Villarreal clung on to secure a scrappy win. Elche are at home to Athletic Bilbao this Sunday.

MAKESHIFT WIN

CF LA NUCIA 0 CD TORREVIEJA 1

Torrevieja pulled off a win having gone into the match missing seven regulars due to injuries and suspension. The visitors were all over the place for the first quarter of an hour, with La Nucia denied by the post and then by two acrobatic Oscar

saves. For a team already relegated to the Preferente, they were showing signs that it would not be a long stint out of the National League division. Having survived the initial onslaught, it was a more focussed Torry in the sec-

ond half, with Rafa Gomez once more leading his markers a merry dance. When Carrasco joined him less than ten minutes into the half, replacing Juanra, the duo were unstoppable. They were a yard ahead of their opponents all the time

PEDREÑO STAYS CD Torrevieja coach, Antonio Pedreño, will be in charge of the team for next season, along with the rest of the coaching staff, Ruben Pastor and physical trainer Portu. The 59 year old former UD Horadada boss was brought in during February after the club sacked Galiana and his assistants on the back of a five match losing run, having been second in the table in January. Pedreño won the Preferente title with UD Horadada twice, the latest in 2012/13, but they failed to gain promotion. Since he took charge at the Vicente Garcia stadium, his record has seen four wins, four draws and just one defeat, with only six goals being conceded.

and their passes and flicks were a joy to watch, with a particular highlight being a Rafa shot producing a brilliant fingertip save from home keeper, Dani. From the resulting corner, Rafa bustled himself into prime position and headed into the

net for the winner. The visitors continued to dominate with Brania and Berna outpacing La Nucia’s defenders whilst Dani made several good stops as his counterpart, Oscar, had a much quieter half. It was a deserved win, but one of lit-

tle significance to either side - one relegated and the other adrift of the play off places. Torry face Alzira in the final match of the season this Saturday evening at 7.00 pm at the Vicente Garcia stadium.

A dreadful refereeing display helped to tin hat a defeat away to a s e c o n d - p l a c e d Orihuela side, that were still worthy of their victory, but with a flattering scoreline. ALAN REMEMBERED Elche Rugby Club is hosting the fourth Sevens tournament this weekend in memory of the former popular coach, Alan Davies, who died in a car crash seven years ago. Alan mentored many top Welsh

players including Shane Williams, as well as making a major impression on the Costa Blanca rugby scene. The tournament starts this Saturday morning (May 16th) at the Elche Rugby ground at 9.30am

MAKING A SPLASH

A busy weekend saw Club Natacion Torrevieja swimmers competing across a range of different categories in events across the region. The youngest members of the club aged between seven and 11 took part in a competition at the San Vincente municipal pool, which saw eleven Torrevieja swimmers racing for the very first time, with the team ending up ninth out of 15 clubs.

It was then the turn of the older members of the club taking part in their trophy event, with everybody at least improving once on their personal bests. There was a silver medal in the girl’s 4x100m Freestyle relay (team pictured with coach Juanma), whilst Zoe Connolly got a bronze in the 100m girls Backstroke. Meanwhile the Torrevieja Masters were in action at their

home pool for the final timed control swims before their regional and national competitions in the summer. Like with the youngsters at San Vincente, personal bests were the order of the day for the eight strong team, plus with added numbers, two relay teams were also able to be entered with a 4x50m mixed Medley relay coming second, and a third place for the men’s 4x50m Medley relay.

Gossip THE CLASSLESS CHAMPIONS

JOHN McGREGOR

Last Sunday at Stamford Bridge, as a mark of respect, Liverpool gave the Chelsea side a ‘Guard of Honour’ as they came out due to winning the Blues winning the Premier League. Nice touch from fellow football foes, considering the competition. But the Chelsea ‘fans’ – and in case you think it was a minority, as is the usual excuse - a great deal of them, all around the ground – waved specially-printed cards. These stupidly depicted retiring Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard’s slip at the end of last season, that let in Demba Ba to score – and thus lose the Reds the Premier Prize but not to Chelsea as you might think, but to Man City. If that was meant to be funny, then spare me… it was indecent, intimidating and infantile, symptomatic of a club that has lost its sense of humour as well as its style. Up above, the Russian robot with the megabucks grins vacantly down from his must-win throne to his must-win charmless manager to his must-win players, lately grinding out their 1 – 0 wins, most from the penalty spot to charmlessly take the title. I’m old enough to remember when Chelsea used to be a stylish side, a club that

did things with a swagger: think Ossie, Hutch, Charlie Cooke, Bobby Tambling, ‘Stroller’ Graham – even my idol Greavesie before Italy and Spurs (n.b. get better soon, Jimbo…). But Chelsea these days – sigh…Yes, I know there’s no love lost between the two clubs these days but this is what Brendan Rodgers said pre-match about the guard of honour: ‘It is the protocol and what you do. They deserve to be champions. It’s not something the players would like to do but we are a team and a club that has class and dignity, so we will do it, and go straight into the game’. Well said, Brendan. Anyone remember Paris? Loud, white, oafish Chelsea supporters pushing a black Frenchman, a father of three off his home city underground, actually chanting ‘We’re racist and that’s the way we like it’ to represent London and England to the world – what has the club done about it? I am told these scum are heroes in their own back yard, but are truly sadly representative of the inherent racism that bubbles under classless Britain today, which then spills out into top ‘class’ football. Manager Jose Mourinho is currently the best in the business tactically – provid-

ed, of course he has the unlimited money to buy whoever he wants – to win the Premier League at all – and I mean all – costs. Only John Terry, there since 1998, is a natural UK product amongst Mourinho’s men, a team of total mercenaries otherwise. Mourinho remains what Fletcher in Porridge would call ‘a charmless nurk’, hell bent, as ever in alienating those neutrals amongst us who like to see fair play and a bit of sportsmanship now and again – like Liverpool displayed before the match, but rarely seen in Mourinho’s own Chelsea side. The same team that soon got PSV’s Ibrahamovic sent off by surrounding and exhorting the ref in the Champions League quarter finals – that’s the one that Chelsea ironically went on to lose, by the way... Mourinho defends his sinners to the point of absurdity, condoning stamping, diving, playacting and ref baiting which we have all seen clearly on the Blues path to this title. Significantly Mourinho did not win Manager of the Month for April, or any other month this season, a feat he ‘enjoyed’ when Chelsea last won the title in 2005/6. It apparently irks him. Chelsea are expected to win – it’s as simple as that,

Jose, but when a team are at the bottom, in trouble with limited resources and win four matches on the spin – that wins the man in charge ‘Manager of the Month’. How did Liverpool react on Sunday when Fabregas tore into Sterling in the first minute, but was only booked, and not sent off as he should have been– just why did he do that with the title won, and respect shown by his opponents for doing so? Crass, not worthy behaviour of a championship-winning side. After a superb one-club career, an example to today’s megabucks mercenaries Gerrard was slaughtered by the jeering, taunting Chelsea fans during the whole game - albeit getting a late (too late from some) deserved ovation from both sets of supporters when he came off with eleven minutes left. For his own part, the Liverpool legend could hold his head high, as usual, having scored the equaliser to square the match and push Chelsea back in the second half toward a possible defeat - and in doing so ram that down the throats of his tormenters to show he could leave with his dignity intact: it’s a pity those Chelsea supporters who held those placards up couldn’t do the same.

SUNDAY SPECIAL

48

TWO DOWN, ONE TO GO!

It’s Mancunian Sunday: firstly super Swansea entertain Man City early doors followed by the weekend’s Premier pin up, United at home to old foes Arsenal in the battle of the also-rans. There’s little love lost between the clubs, going back to the early days of the Millennium when Fergie ‘n Keano went nose to nose with Arsene ‘n Viera. This one could go either way, United having stopped the rot last week beating Palace 2 – 1 at Selhurst Park, whereas Arsenal slipped up on Monday 1 – 0 against a fastfinishing Swansea. The Championship play offs are exciting with virtually nothing certain so far. Tonight it’s Middlesbrough with a one goal away advantage who entertain Brentford, then on Saturday it’s another high noon East Anglian derby , this time the return at Norwich after a 1 – 1 draw at Ipswich: then the final playoff at Wembley. Any forecasts?

Who’s going down with Burnley and Quickly Pursued Relegation? It’s one from five, from Astonishing Villa in 14th on 38 points down to haunted Hull in 18th on 34. Between them are Leicester on 37, and Sunderland and Newcastle on 36. All have two to play except Sunderland who have three (shh, but that one’s against Arsenal, who will want the win badly….). OK so far? Now let’s look at Saturday’s fixtures - and remember – this is football and anything can happen. In the early doors game, Villa travel to Southampton, where the Saints have wobbled of late, given their fantastic season. It’s unbelievable that Villa are looking OK-ish to avoid the drop, and joy of joys are playing Arsenal in the FA Cup final shortly - but Tim Sherwood will want the cushion of another win at St Mary’s – which could be difficult. Which QPR will turn up at Loftus Road to play nervy, neurotic Newcastle? With Harry Redknapp gone and nice-guy-but-a-loser Chris Ramsey faffing about in charge, the Hoops highly-paid mercenaries will be lazily looking around to better themselves for next season – and that’s not in the Chumpionship. Will those loyalty-less lacklustre lads languishing about benefit the opposition, that huge club that are in free fall, Newcastle Disunited? The Magpies managed to scrape a draw last week after the pieces of eight defeats on the trot were patched up together - so logic, pride and Geordie guts should provide for something to stop the carveup – but this is f******* remember (fill in the missing letters).

WILL DICK BE CLEVER? Now then, here’s a belter: Sunderland at home to Leicester. It’s more than a six-pointer, the result is a season changer. Both teams have recently been winning key games, Leicester a real revelation where their boss deservedly won Manager of the Month for April. Did you know decorated Nigel Pearson also has a degree in escapology? The Foxes’ own

Houdini Harry’s got previous in almostg o n e s i t ua t i ons – just like Leicester were in mid season. B ut t he f l i c k e ri n g S t a di u m Li g h t s could be switching back on at Sunderland if that clever Dick Adv oc a a t k e e p s t he Black Cats up – which definitely didn’t look on at one time. The Feline is that this Foxes v Cats result could be catastrop h i c f or s o me especially as Hull are on a special away da y this Saturday. Saturday is huge for Hull, away to Spurs who are driv-

Hull of a fight!

i ng t h e i r o w n l o y a l f a n s b o n k e rs , f i n i s hi n g t hi s u n me m o ra bl e s e a s o n w i t h some iffy results - like getting tanked 3 – 0 last week at Stoke. Of Tottenham’s home f orm i n 1 5 ga m e s , t he L i l l y w h i t e s ha v e w on s i x , drawn three – and lost six, which must have the Tigers purring because they could be in seventh heaven – and salvation? Erm, hate to mention it Steve Bruce, but that old team you starred with for years, y’know Man United, they’re coming next week and you might need a result t o s t a y u p : good l u c k Saturday at White Hot Lane.
