PARTIDO UNPOPULAR PP GETS A SUNDAY ROASTING

ALEX TRELINSKI

T

he nationally governing Partido Popular suffered their worst regional and local election results in 20 years last Sunday, including losing power in the Valencian government, whilst they will need support from a minor party to stay in charge in Murcia. In the town halls locally, the PP lost the upper hand in many councils which included losing overall control of Torrevieja for the first time in 24 years, after their worst ever results in the city. The PP did have the consolation of being the biggest single party in Orihuela, which saw the independent Claro party lose their only seat, previously held by their leader Bob Houliston. The socialist PSOE boosted their position locally, and only lost one council, that being Bigastro to the PP, where the Mayor is facing corruption charges. The impact of new parties Podemus and Ciudadanos

was comparatively unspectacular in areas of the Vega Baja where they stood, compared to Elche and Alicante in the north, or Murcia to the south. In Murcia, the PP lost overall control of San Javier, but kept their grip on San Pedro del Pinatar, with nobody having a majority in Los Alcazares and Torre Pacheco. Nationally, the leader of the leftist Podemus party, Pablo Iglesias, claimed the results spelt the end of traditional politics in Spain, which has been dominated by the PP and the PSOE. Podemosbacked candidates in Barcelona and Madrid both fared strongly, with the PP suffering heavy losses, amid voter discontent over economic policy and corruption. The PP led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy won the most votes nationwide – 27 percent. Its traditional rival, the PSOE, came second, but the two parties fell short of overall majorities in many areas

that they have governed, losing ground to Podemos and to Ciudadanos, which campaigned on a pro-business platform. Last Sunday was seen as a major test before the General Election which is expected in November. Mariano Rajoy said that “Evidently the results weren’t those that we would have liked to have had. It is also evident that we didn’t reach the majorities that the citizens trusted us with four years ago.” The party lost about 2.5 million votes compared with the previous local elections in 2011, with some senior figures beginning to question whether Rajoy should stay at the helm. It’s all change for the Valencia Government, with Alberto Fabra’s PP administration ousted after 20 years in charge, with a left of centre coalition being put together by PSOE’s presidential candidate, Ximo Puig. His main

option is to do a deal with the Compromis party, and they have scheduled a meeting for Monday. The PP are likely

Across the local municipalities, the main highlight for the PP was becoming the largest single party in Orihuela, where the independent Claro party just failed to reach the five percent voting quota to qualify for a seat, and were therefore wiped from the council. Their leader Bob Houliston blamed voter apathy and also the designation of polling stations which confused voters, adding that Claro did still get half of the coastal votes but not enough within the context of the whole Orihuela area to get a seat. The PP also took Bigastro from the PSOE and are also able to rule over San Fulgencio without independent support after securing an overall majority. These morsels were scant consolation for the many areas and seats they gave up in Sunday’s vote, with Torrevieja Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, see-

ing the PP lose overall control of the city for the first time in 24 years. He will now have to govern in a minority or by cobbling together a deal with one of the smaller parties, probably Ciudadamos. The Greens doubled their representation to four seats, the same as the PSOE, who’s council group leader Angel Saez resigned from that position and from the council on Wednesday, which some observers suggested may improve the chances of an alliance of all the opposition parties to remove Dolon. Dream Torrevieja got two seats in their first election, likewise Ciudadamos with two representatives. Old PP fiefdoms like Algorfa(which they lost by just four votes after a recount with Antonio Lorenzo Paredes ousted as Mayor after 16 years); Dolores; and Jacarilla all tipped into the PSOE camp, whilst Almoradi saw

the PP lose their majority status for the first time since 1987. Other old PP areas are left in flux with Pilar de La Horadada, Catral, Guardamar, Santa Pola and San Javier seeing them lose control with smaller parties holding the balance of power between the PP and PSOE. Despite a patchy national picture, the PSOE had an excellent election across the Vega Baja with the exception of Torrevieja, Orihuela, and los-

ing Bigastro. They easily saw off challenges from independent groups challenging incumbents Jose Maria Butron in Los Montesinos and Antonio Perez Garcia in Rojales, as well as taking full control of councils off the PP, who embarrassingly saw the newly formed independent group in Montesinos dump them into third place. The PSOE kept overall control of Rafal, Benferri and San Isidro.

SUNDAY SMASH

Two people died and five were injured after a crash involving two taxis and a car

on the N332 last Sunday evening at around 11.45pm. The incident, not far from the

El Altet tunnel, saw a 31 year old man and an 80 year old woman die with the others being taken to hospital in Alicante and Elche. The collision happened on the Alicante-bound carriageway as the car hit two taxis, with the 31 year old driver killed with his vehicle then catching fire. A 30 year old taxi driver was trapped for nearly an hour as his feet were lodged between his seat and the steering column, with reports saying that deceased 80 year old taxi passenger was a foreign national.

The results were far more dramatic in both Alicante and Elche, which both saw massive collapses in the PP vote, along with a sizeable fall in the PSOE returns. The PP still came top in both polls, but Ciudadamos and Podemos both performed well amongst the newer and smaller parties. That means some form of creativity will be needed to form a stable administration of any sort of political colour in both cities. Deals and coalitions have to be formed across Spain’s municipalities by Saturday June 13th when new terms of offices start and votes take place in council chambers as to who will take charge of the Town Halls. Where parties which have not won enough seats to govern decide to form pacts or coalitions with others in order to obtain a majority large enough to run an area, they are also expected to produce details on June 13th.

ALL OUT

Four days of strikes have been announced by Spanish air traffic controllers, which will create travel misery at the start of the summer season. The workers will walk out on June 8th, 10th, 12th

and 14th for two hours in the morning and a further two in the afternoon. They are disputing penalties handed out by airport owner AENA over strike action taken five years ago.

NOT SO GOOD VIBRATIONS

BEHIND BARS

A 36 year old Elche man has been denied bail after he was charged with trying to murder his exgirlfriend by planting a bomb in her car. The National Police arrested the man last November after a homemade device detonated in the driver’s headrest of a car, with the 41 year old woman only suffering minor injuries in the incident in Elche.

Alicante Provincial Court turned down the accused’s appeal for bail, after he had originally been ordered to be kept in custody by the Elche Domestic Violence court. The Alicante Court ruled that the alleged offence was severe enough for the man to stay in custody, as well as fearing that he might be a flight risk.

DEATH BY STARVING

An unnamed British man with the initials of A.E.P, has been on trial in Orihuela charged with homicide by omission after his 75 year old partner, with the initials P.B, was found dead and malnourished in her Mil Palmeras bedroom. The incident happened in May last year where Guardia officers found the emaciated corpse in bed, with her 83 year old partner being charged with causing her death by failing in his moral duty to help her.

HOLE LOAD OF TROUBLE A British couple had a lucky escape at their Torrevieja home last week when their front porch area collapsed into a sinkhole,

leaving them unable to get out of their property in the city’s Rocajuna urbanisation. The unnamed pensioners saw emergency

services scrambled quickly amidst fears that their building had actually collapsed but it was the patio that had sunk over a metre causing damage to the front of the home on the California residential development which was built in 1991. The couple were freed unharmed and were put up by their insurance company in a hotel. The Informacion newspaper has reported that three similar incidents have occurred on the same estate in recent years.

Investigators didn’t buy into the claims of the man that his partner, also British, was a small eater and had never been ill. They had been seeing each other for some 15 years, with the man living in Murcia and meeting up, according to the man’s testimony, at least a couple of times a week over that period. The charged man will likely see out his remaining days behind bars, as he faces a jail term of between 10 and 20 years, if found guilty.

A Rojales householder who couldn’t sleep due to the noise being caused by a new local water supply system has won the backing of the Valencian ombudsman, José Cholbi. The unnamed resident complained in 2013 about the noises and vibrations in his water pipes caused by the municipal water supply system, adding that sleeping and relaxation were close to impossible at times. The ombudsman acknowledged that Rojales council had carried out work to try and find out the cause of the unwanted vibrations, which were probably caused by some new pumps, but they have been ordered to check the noise levels and to dampen them down, if necessary.

OFF TRACK Sign up today... A 49 year old cyclist had to be rescued last Sunday morning after he fell some 25 metres off a cliff edge in the La Pedrera reservoir area near Torremendo. The

rescue efforts were made all the harder because of the terrain, with him being winched onto a helicopter to fly him to the Vega Baja Hospital.

A LITTLE BIT OF SOAP

Firefighters had an unusual job last Friday evening when they had to free a six year old boy, whose head got stuck between a couple of balustrades outside a second floor Santa Pola apartment. The incident happened on Salamanca Avenue, with the parents calling the emergency services for help. The Elche firemen duly obliged, freeing the child's head courtesy of a copious amount of soap and water.

HELL’S KITCHEN?

A Mallorca teenager has been shown to have a demanding palate after he was carted off by the police after he threatened to stab his mother because her meatballs were not to his liking. The National Police arrested the 18-year-old in Palma, identified as José Manuel G.V for producing a kitchen knife and waving it her whilst he criticised her culinary ability. "I don't want this shi--y food, give me money so I can eat out or I'll stab you," the young Spaniard told his mother, according to police sources. His mother gave him 10 euros and she left the

house. When she returned a few minutes later, she saw that her son had made himself a sandwich and accused him of taking her money to pay for "marijuana" or to "gamble at the local casino". The teenager then verbally attacked his mother yet again, calling her a "son of a bitch" and a "dirty pig" before adding "you should have died in childbirth". He then grabbed the kitchen knife and threatened to "keep going and I'll kill you, I'll stab you". Perhaps unsurprisingly, his mother is currently considering taking out a restraining order on her own son.

Local councils have been given money from Alicante Provincial Council to spend on local arts, music, and cultural events. Grants ranging

between 720 and two thousand euros will go to Catral, Los Montesinos, Rojales, Algorfa, Almoradi, and San Fulgencio.

VIRTUAL MARKET An illegal cigarette making factory has been shut down by the police in the Elche area. The clandestine operation based in a cottage in La Galia-Altabix was raided after cops heard about a man selling fags on the cheap in local bars. On being interviewed he confessed to

making the illegal smokes with authorities uncovering 600 kilos of tobacco plants and eight and half thousand empty cigarette packets in their visit to the unlicensed premises. Police believe that the finished products would have netted the man around 57 thousand euros.

Almoradi's popular Saturday street market has gone on-line on the municipality’s website. Visitors can download an app from the site which lists all the stalls and what they sell, with stallholders able to add their own information and photos. The new initiative also allows Almoradi officials to log tax and license information for the various businesses as well as making sure that everybody is up to date with the necessary payments.

The National Police have arrested a man in Castellón in the northern part of the Valencian region for allegedly seeking to get revenge against former clients by posting ads offering "free sex" with their phone numbers after the women did not renew services with his company. The man was detained on suspicion of committing a "crime against honour". The 39-year-old reportedly

wanted to seek revenge against two female clients after they did not renew their home insurance with his company. The man then took their contact information and placed it in an advertisement online, offering "free sex". The ad received more than 75 views online in the short time that it was published and caused the women to receive "numerous calls and messages", police said.

Little

Smile THE SOUND OF

DAVE SILVER

EVERY once in a while an old problem raises its unprepossessing head in the pub. And no, I am not referring to Ol' Red Eyes, the most ancient member of our small but perfectly-constituted hostelry group. These days, the elderly codger is content to lie face down (or up) on the saloon floor and sleep away the day (and night) apart from the very occasional moment of consciousness in which he sips some life-maintaining liquid. Ol' Red Eyes hasn't had much to do since the arrival of our latest guide and mentor Andromeda Arkwright, a lovely lady, who has taken the reins from the old fellow. Anyone in the pub who is troubled by a niggle or niggled by a trouble can present his predicament to the admirable Andromeda who will soon soothe his worries and send him back to his bar stool to resume his enjoyment of life as he knows it. Mind you, I'm not saying that Andromeda is perfect. Sure, she seems to know everything about everything but sometimes she can be a little impatient, especially when she reckons that one of us is acting stupidly. She is only human after all. I recall one occasion (well, it happened only yesterday but my short-term memory takes a lot longer to engage gear nowadays) when she turned on one of her pub disciples and remonstrated with the individual in no uncertain terms. 'Don't take this personally,' Andromeda told him, 'But I do believe you have gone doolally. I have never heard

MUSIC GETS NIL POINTS FROM ME

anything so half-baked as what you've just suggested. Indeed, forget what I said at the start of this telling-off -please DO take this personally!' At which point, Daft Barry, being daft, started to snigger quietly and then cackle loudly. 'Stop your giggling and guffawing instantly, Barry!' said Andromeda. 'This is no laughing matter!' And then she turned back to the object of her ire. 'As I was saying, Dave Silver, you must be unhinged for proposing what you did barely a moment ago.' 'Tell us what he said, Andromeda,' urged Indoor Lou. 'Yes, tell us what he said, Andromeda,' repeated

Fearful Phil. 'Yes, yes, tell us what he said, Andromeda,' called Fag Ash Bill from the street, tensing his lips in determined curiosity around the latest of his never-ending supply of cigarettes and almost burning the tip of his nose in the process. Andromeda shook her head. 'You know I cannot divulge that information, fellas. It's a question of confidentiality.' 'Tell us anyway!' the pubsters chorused in perfectlytimed unison -- apart from Fag Ash Bill's voice which, considering he was outside on the pavement, had a little further to travel. 'Okay,' shrugged Andromeda Arkwright. 'Dave Silver said he is con-

sidering packing his bags and leaving town because he has lost all sense of selfworth and feels he is of no use to anyone in this pub. Have you ever heard anything so silly? We all know that, despite his occasional lapses into his own world, he is deep down a very nice man.' Someone muttered: 'Yeah, VERY deep down.' Daft Barry was looking particularly pensive. 'What gives, my young friend?' asked Andromeda. 'It was the packing his bags bit,' answered Daft Barry. 'I remember once having a row with my mum and she told me to pack my bags. So I packed my bags into a suitcase but had no idea what to do next.'

'May we continue,' sighed Andromeda. 'Dave Silver is a man who has so much to offer. Let us show how highly we regard him by giving him a rousing three cheers. Hip, hip . . ' Unfortunately, no-one took up the offer and in the ensuing long silence, Dave the barman leaped onto the bar and pointed an accusing finger at me. 'Can't you see what Devious Dave is doing? He's fishing for the sympathy vote. And why is he doing that? Well, you have only to refer to the start of this very Courier column. 'He begins it by saying -and I almost quote -- that every once in a while a problem raises its head in the pub. And then, as usual,

Deceitful Dave goes off on a mad tangent, waffling away like there's no tomorrow.' Dave the barman paused and massaged his pointing finger which had succumbed to cramp. 'Well, I'll tell you what Dishonest Dave's problem is,' mein host continued. 'I have once again revived the idea of installing a jukebox on the premises to attract more customers and raise extra revenue. 'But Duplicitous Dave is adamantly opposed to my plan because he feels that the constant music will kill conversation and thus lose him material for his unfunny Courier articles.' It was my turn to leap onto the bar and point an accusing digit at Dave the barman. There we stood for several tense moments, head to head and finger to finger. Everyone in the pub stared incredulously at my swift transformation as I dropped the cloak of pretend humility and erased the fake humble expression from my face. After allowing the tension to build a little bit more, I hurled a challenge at Dave the barman: 'A jukebox in this pub? Over my dead body!' To which Dave the barman instantly responded: 'Your dead body? Well, that can easily be arranged!' The pub punters reacted immediately to Dave the barman's verbal thrust with the response which they had failed to provide for Andromeda Arkwright's earlier 'Hip hip' prompt. Thrilled at the prospect of my possible demise, they shouted as one: 'Hooray!'

PALM ROUTE TRIPPED UP

SHARP EXIT

Two fast-footed Algerian stowaways escaped the clutches of the National Police when they boarded a merchant ship in Alicante last Friday. The two freeloaders aged in their twenties snuck onto the vessel at the Algerian port of Oran, and were locked up in a cabin, after they had been discovered. When the authorities boarded the ship, they found

the men had escaped onshore, after breaking a window to stage their disappearing act.

This lucky lady was apparently

As the break in started, Lucia Martin, hid under a bed, and called the Guardia Civil, whilst her father tried to reach an agreement with the home invaders, one of whom was brandishing an imitation shotgun. Officers arrived at the house and caught the gang red-handed. One of them had 22 thousand euros in cash, and after inspecting the property, the Guardia

found 145 thousand euros in a bag under a table. There was a further twist though as Laparra, who has a diagnosed heart condition, suffered an anxiety attack. After an overnight stay in hospital, he was charged with breaking and entering; threatening behaviour; and extortion. The costly spell involved Laparra putting some flowers in water for forty days, as well gathering soil from a local cemetery, which he then had to smear over his body. Clearly, the spell did not work for him, and came without a refund.

PARENTS SELL GIRL

An 11-year-old Romanian girl who was reportedly raped and beaten after she was sold by her parents to be married for 17 thousand euros, has been rescued by the National Police. Cops detained five people from the two families involved and charged them with human trafficking, sexual abuse, rape, abuse and labour exploitation. Investigations started a year ago after authorities

learnt that "a minor was sold by her parents with the goal of contracting marriage at an engagement party in Romania." The girl, who lived with her parents in Sevilla, was mistreated as soon as she arrived in Valladolid in the north to live with her husband-to-be and his family, a police statement said. "They would constantly insult, threaten and hit her, and force her to have sex"

with her future husband and forced her to pick grapes and potatoes without receiving any pay, it added. Police said the girl called her mother for help but the family to which she was sold demanded 10 thousand euros to let her go. It was only after they noticed police were monitoring them that they put her on a Sevilla bound bus for her to be reunited with her parents.

BED BOOST

The San Javier-based cancer charity, MABS Mar Menor is better off to the tune of 15 thousand euro which has been used to buy a hospital bed, all thanks to the leading efforts of local golfer, Helen Holland. Helen nominated MABS as her charity to support when she became the ladies golf captain at La Manga Resort last year. and as Helen's mother Beverley Taylor is a MABS volunteer, she was invited to attend the opening of their new centre in San Javier. There, she was able to talk to patients, volunteers and supporters, and was so impressed with what she saw and heard, plus the facilities the centre could offer, Helen chose to support MABS. She decided she would like to aim to buy a piece of equipment such as a hospital bed which cost 15 thousand euros and after over a year fund raising, the target was reached, and surpassed earlier this month! Highlights included a White Night at La Manga Club including an auction and raffle that that raised six thousand euro. Janet Bell of MABS Mar Menor attended a golf dinner recently for the official presentation of the cheque and said "This is an amazing amount of money and MABS is truly grateful for all the hard work, instigated by Helen, from the residents of La Manga Club". Janet went on to explain to the diners the work MABS does in the community with carers, drivers, translators, and counsellors, and relies totally on voluntary contributions and fundraising.

DAY TO REMEMBER

Students from the Cabo Roig based Kingsbury Academy of Dance got a treat recently as they were invited to join in with the Russian ballet workshop when the company came to perform in Torrevieja. Academy founder Ruth Kingsbury was especially pleased with Lucy Stewart, one of her pupils who has Down’s Syndrome and who has made a name for herself on the local swimming circuit. Lucy impressed the Russian coach and she even managed to get a photo with him! The students from the Academy were also invited to watch their rehearsal before the “Stars of the Russian Ballet” show at the Teatro Municipal.

SIGHT SAVERS

After the winding up of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club this year, former club Presidents Iain and Janette Bennett have delivered over 2,500 pairs of used spectacles from Specsavers in Torrevieja and Guardamar to the Lions Club spectacles recycling centre at San Vicente del Raspieg near Alicante. In countries where no eye care is provided, Lions Clubs provide clinics and opticians and where glasses are needed, those Lions eye specialists then place orders with the numerous recycling centres worldwide, including Alicante, for delivery to those most in need. The recycling centre processes around 70 thousand pairs a year from around Spain, with the Costa Lions asking the Torrevieja Suomi Lions Club to take over collection and delivery from the local Specsaver branches, as the appeal continues.

HELP HITS RIGHT NOTE A bumper sum of over one thousand euros was raised last weekend for Help Murcia Mar Menor thanks to an afternoon of music and fun at La Casa Familier, Los Urrutias. 85 members of Help and their friends were entertained by The Geckos, offering a variety of tunes in the garden area, followed by a BBQ and an evening disco. Help raises funds to enable the charity to give to the poor and needy across the Murcia region, and the next event will be a Spring Fair at the Arches, Los Alcazares on Saturday June 20th.

Local artist Julia Everett-Wragg was so inspired by an action shot of Torrevieja swimmer Zoe Connelly that she decided to commit the image to a painting. She described the photo as 'an inspiration' and it was not too long before she set about committing it to canvas. "I could see the effort required by Zoe in the butterfly stroke and I just had to capture the sheer determination on her face as she pulled herself through the water." said Juevra. "A few weeks ago I set about my task, with the intention of perhaps, one day, actually meeting Zoe and presenting her with the picture, but I never realised that it would happen quite so quickly." That meeting in fact happened last week at Torrevieja’s swimming pool, along with Zoe’s mum Vicki coming along to witness the special presentation. Vicki was quite obviously delighted as indeed was the artist Juevra. "I was so pleased to see the show of genuine appreciation from Zoe, it was such a thrill to hand over the painting to her." Juevra explained that she only took up painting fairly recently whilst on a cruise that offered 12 free art classes on sea days. Before the end of the cruise she had painted five watercolour pictures which were exhibited on the final day. She then joined the U3A painting course on her return to Torrevieja. Now having changed to acrylic, Juevra only paints images that inspire her, recent works including a Spanish flamenco dancer, a Spanish friend's children, a portrait of her husband, a landscape in Peniscola and of course an action painting of 13 year old Zoe. But with it now safely hanging in 'pride of place' on her bedroom wall, Zoe will get back to the real business of competing and with her eyes firmly set on the Spanish National Summer Championships to be held later the year in Barcelona, for which she has already qualified, this young Torrevieja swimmer might be equally inspired every time she looks up at the painting hanging above her head.

Dog

12

PETER SINGH I love all dogs with an incredible passion, but my favourite breed is the German Shepherd, as I think they simply have everything you would ever want in a dog. Amazing loyalty is their most amazing gift and my German Shepherd, Billy, has this quality in abundance and he follows me everywhere. When all the dogs are off the lead on the land and playing, all Billy wants to do is to stay by my side, and they are called velcro dogs for this very reason! Sometimes I wish he would go and play with the others, but there he is, always by my side, no matter what. German Shepherds, also have, in my opinion, a very unfair reputation. I have worked with all breeds of dogs throughout Europe and there is not a more sensitive breed than the German Shepherd. Raise them correctly and they can be trusted with anything and anyone. Billy is bullet proof when it comes to any situation. You could put him in a war zone and he would simply take it all in his stride. He really is a legend. Given these facts about the German Shepherd dog, I came across one of the saddest stories this week on Facebook. A family in Almeria had a very old German Shepherd, who they used to protect their land, which adjoins their house. As he is old, the family threw him out onto the street, as you would a bag of rubbish and

FAVOURITE AND LOYAL

went and got a younger dog for the duties of protecting the land and the house. This is such a wicked and despicable act and once again, it shows that in this world there are many humans with a very dark and warped side to them. Such is the loyalty of the German Shepherd dog, that after they threw him out, he simply would not move anywhere and waited patiently at the gate, for them to let him

back in. How sad is that? The dog is pictured here and his eyes are just so sad. People tried to lead him away and rescue him, but he refused to leave. Eventually, he managed to sneak back in, but thankfully from what I understand he has been rescued. We offered him a place at our rescue centre, but I believe he is now being looked after by new and loving owners, which I am so happy about.

It never surprises me anymore how vile some humans can be. I mean if you have that in you to simply throw a dog who has been with you for years onto the street to fend for himself, what else are these people capable of? Some of the requests I receive daily about abuse to certain dogs are just so disgusting and I wish I could say otherwise, but the world we live in is getting more sadistic as each year

passes. I have no idea of the reason, but kindness, compassion and empathy towards other humans and animals are qualities every human should exercise, but there are many who seem to get a sick kick out of cold hearted actions, rather than show sympathy and understanding. So yes, for me the German Shepherd dog is my favourite breed and always will be. They are used worldwide, by the

police and armies, to protect us and keep us safe. I have witnessed many times with thugs in London, that when the Police arrive, they show no sign of calming down. But when the German Shepherd gets out the van, they soon see sense very quickly. But always remember, behind those big brown eyes and underneath all of that black and tan fur, lies a dog who is extremely sensitive, who just wants to always be by your side. You are their life and loyalty like that should never be thrown away. www.thedogyouneed.com is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO FROM A MARKET CRASH?

Mark Harrison Partner AES International

Far from our being free of the recessions which have dogged UK and global growth in the recent past, it seems bad news is again bubbling to the surface. Recently, Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund warned that governments must not allow “mediocre to become the new reality”, as data from three independent research agencies revealed emerging market (EM) economic growth had slipped to its lowest level since the 2009 slump. EM economies have been affected by a mixture of things. Commodity driven countries such as Brazil and Russia have been hit by the shrinking oil price – although events in Ukraine have compounded issues for Russia – while the very strong dollar has exacerbated the outflow of capital from others. Predictions from the three research agencies of what the average growth levels for the EM economies will be in the first quarter of this year, ranged from between 3.5% to 5% per year – the lowest levels since before 2009. These low predictions followed weak jobs data in the US the week before, which revealed increased employment, but at about half the rate predicted by a Wall Street consensus. On the same day Lagarde called for governments not to allow growth mediocrity to prevail, the US Treasury stepped up calls for big economies – including Europe and Japan – to boost demand as the global economy was becoming “increasingly unbalanced”. Then in March, the UK’s Office for National statistics released data showing that Britain’s building sector had contracted by 0.9% in February. This was a surprise and was far below economist’s expectations of around 2.2% growth during the month. All of this comes on the back of continued deflationary pressures in the eurozone (the UK’s ONS this morning revealed

inflation remained at 0% last month), high levels of government debt and low oil prices. So what can be done? According to David Norton, head of investments at AES International, there are a few approaches to investing which may help you prepare for a potential crash, if indeed this is the path down which markets are headed. “If there were to be a crash, the most obvious answer would be to leave all your money in cash. But, while you may not see the value of the cash plummet in the conventional sense – it will still be eroded by inflation, and bank security cannot be as relied upon today as it once was,” said Norton. “Gold is the traditional safe haven when all else is uncertain. Other physical assets provide emotional security for investors, such as bullion, coins, bricks and mortar. Property can also generate a yield, making it easier to ride out a crash. “However all of these carry their own risks, and you wouldn’t want to switch everything you have into just one of them. “There is only one real way to remain invested and safeguard against a market crash, and that is to diversify your portfolio. Strategic asset allocation accounts for over 90% of risk, and will shelter your portfolio from depreciation if a bubble bursts. If equity markets fall, or property is hit, a well-diversified portfolio will safeguard your investments. “Lastly, it is worth remembering that while crashes happen, so do recoveries. One option would be to do nothing, ride it out and wait. It would be an uncomfortable ride, and the recovery could take years - meaning you're not using your money at all, just waiting to get back to parity, but you should eventually get back to where you started.” For further information please contact me at mark.harrison@aesinternational.com

About

Life CHURCH QUAKES AFTER IRISH VOTE TONY MAYES

Who would have thought that the most God-fearing of nations, conservative Ireland, would ever have shunned the wishes of the Roman Catholic Church and voted to allow gay/lesbian marriage? A couple of generations ago, such a thing would have been unheard of. How things have changed. To me it demonstrates how the public have moved on and the church has simply not kept pace with the times. Calls for the RC church to take a reality check is an understatement. It is now seen by an increasing number of people as a total irrelevance in society. I can see a time coming - and it won´t be too long, when the pews will be filled by the religious extremists and those who simply want to hedge their bets - in case an appearance and a few prayers now and again will gain them a place in God´s kingdom. I can now see Ireland´s population taking the church on in its opposition to abortion, contraception and the crowning glory, to make it illegal for any employer - God included - to deny a person the right to marry and have a normal, family life. Here´s an interesting question. How much misery has religion (or should I say man´s multitude of interpretations on it) caused and is still causing around the world? I would venture to say it has caused more misery than any other single thing, right down the centuries. It´s provoked wars, pitted family against family, broken up relationships and is now causing thousands of deaths worldwide. It´s resulting in Muslims causing all manner of atrocities against Christians in the western world, and around

the other side of the world, it´s Muslim minorities facing dreadful atrocities in the hands of Buddhist majorities. I have sympathy with the Beatles' song which urged people to imagine a world without countries and without religion. Religion is a blessing in the hands of tolerant people who use it to help others of any denomination (like the Salvation Army whose members are always there to help people in need whoever they are). But it´s an abomination in the hands of extremists and those who simply want to use the power and authority it gives to control others and this is what Ireland was shackled with for generations. Imagine the Victorian priest thundering from the pulpit threatening hell and damnation to anyone who strayed from his version of the straight and narrow. I remember as a child being frightened witness by a vicar who made Iain Paisley look like a pussy cat. So, good for the Irish. Their PM said the vote for gay marriage was a vote for love. Was, then, a no vote a vote for hate? Worth a

thought, isn't it! Personally, I felt that the vote for gay/lesbian marriage was a vote for common sense. But where I draw the line is allowing two women or two men to adopt or raise children. I am totally against it because a child should have the love and care from a mother and father or adoptive mother and father - it gives children all the wrong messages. What´s most important is the proper raising of the next generation, not the emotions of the adults. Of course, there are gays who adopt for the very best of reasons, but as a journalist attending courts day after day in my 20's and 30's, I had my fair share of seeing homosexual men in the dock for preying on children and teenagers and as statistics prove, most child abuse occurs within households among people closest to the child. Sadly, back then, there were editors who didn´t like the idea of such cases appearing in print because they thought readers would be put off reading their 'family' papers, so they went unreported, or dismissed in a paragraph.

All that did was give the public a false sense of security. Last Sunday my wife and I tried to do our civic duty and vote in Orihuela Costa. We went to the town hall which is within walking distance only to be told that our polling station was three miles away in Cabo Roig! We then learned that scores of other people had similarly discovered the same thing. Political parties were busy driving them to the other polling station. Then I learned that people in Punta Prima were denied voting at the nearest place at Playa Flamenca polling station near the commercial centre and had to go to the town hall. It all smacks of trying to make it as difficult as possible for people to vote and makes me question whether it was all done deliberately. After all, the Spanish don´t want a council being taken over by foreigners - just the same as we take a dislike to British councils being taken over by foreign immigrants. I hope there´s a thorough investigation to establish whether or not there have been some dirty tricks. Stephen Woodhouse, 52,

is a commercial airline pilot, which is a stressful and exacting job. When he arrived home all he wanted was peace and quiet. But that was denied him week in week out - because of his neighbour´s barking dog. Finally, he drowned the dog in a bucket because he was fed up with hearing it barking from 'morning until night'. "I'd reached my wits' end," he told police officers. "All I could think of was that the noise had to stop. It was driving me bloody mad... so I stuck it in the bucket until it stopped moving. I never thought of the consequences." He was given a suspended prison sentence. Scientists know what a constantly barking dog does to people. It can induce extreme physical and psychological distress. The occasional bark sends messages to the brain which makes us feel tense and raises blood pressure and heart rate, but it quickly returns to normal. But if the barking is continuous, the effect builds up, triggering our flight or fight mechanisms, and eventually leads to a cocktail of hormones, including adrenaline in the system. That cocktail causes people not only to feel anxious, but also immensely angry. Drowning a barking dog is an extreme reaction, but is by no means

unique - in America, where people carry guns as a matter of course, barking dogs are often the wrong side of a bullet. Dog owners should ensure that a dog does not bark when it is left unattended. It´s a particular problem in Spain, where we have windows open more often. Another doggy story caught the headlines last week, is that of penniless Hillary Barrows, an English teacher who spent years travelling Europe and adopted two abandoned dogs in Spain on her travels (pictured). Back in Britain she was offered emergency council accommodation when she was homeless, on condition she gave up her dogs, Robbie and Cleo. She refused and is now living with her beloved pets in a 20-year-old car in a supermarket car park. What has the barking dogs problem and that of Ms Barrows got in common? People take on dogs and cats even when their lifestyles do not allow them to care for the pets properly. Quite clearly the family next door to the airline pilot who were out at work and did nothing to prevent their dog barking day in day out should never have had a pet. Equally is it sensible for a person living a nomadic life to have a pet? Is it fair on the pet? I think not.

Life MANS WAS MY MAN JEANETTE ERATH

Did you watch the Eurovision Song Contest last Saturday from Vienna? For many years I have been left feeling flat as my favourite Eurovision entry lags behind in last place or thereabouts, but this time round I am overjoyed, as I picked Sweden as a winner when I listened to clips of all forty songs on the internet and then when I saw it in the semi-finals I loved it even more! The mix of a great song called Heroes and fantastic interesting special effects, not forgetting the very good looking singer (Mans Zelmerlow), made for a winning combination. But I had been wrong before and I was just hoping that this year the rest of Europe would agree. Looking at the favourites before the contest started, Sweden was certainly up there however Russia was becoming clearly popular. This, to me, was a political statement as I don´t believe the song was very good but last year Russia gave points to the eventual winner, drag act Conchita, I believe that this year they were trying a bit too hard in

Europe to live up to their phrase of ´Building Bridges´. As the votes came in it became obvious that Russia was getting a lot of points from all over Europe, and as much as the presenters repeated their mantra that

statement. However Sweden stayed close behind, nipping at the heels of Russia and Italy clung on to third place throughout. At the break in voting after the first twenty countries had given their results there was

other hand was calm and collected as we imagine the Swedes to be. Once the next twenty countries began giving their results, it became clear that tables were starting to turn and Sweden began getting more and

this was about music not politics, one couldn´t help wondering if the reason for their success was more about a blow for the Russian autocracy then the actual song. Therefore for all the protestations and comments this was, during the first half of voting, becoming a political

an interview with the Russian female singer and the Swedish guy. The woman was crying with emotion as though believing she had it in the bag, gushing about how fantastic it all was, and how grateful she was to everyone who voted. Mans Zelmerlow on the

more points, until with three countries still to declare they were crowned as the winners, unable to be caught by Russia or any other country. The camera was sure to stay on the handsome Mans and steered clear of the pretty Russian woman with the bleached blonde hair.

So, the result was a great one for Sweden, Australia did well, as guests for the 60th anniversary of Eurovision, they finished in fifth place with a catchy number reminiscent, for me at least of a Bruno Mars track. However, where was the UK? I realise that the song we chose, was a bit strange and very out-dated, relying, as usual on gimmicks that belong in the 80´s and a song that would have sounded fashionable in the thirties, but that´s not the point I want to make. This is a song contest but as we know it´s also about tactical voting, giving points to our nearest and dearest, and in these days of mass immigration it´s difficult to understand why, with so many ex-pats all over the world, that we did not get more points. The only countries to give us something were all countries that didn´t even make the final, as Ireland gave us one point as did Malta and lovely little San Marino gave us three points, leaving the UK with five sad, pathetic points. But where were the points from

Australia, a country full of expat residents, and Spain of course? Why didn´t we give our neighbours and countrymen anything? This is possibly easier understood as most British would have been watching on UK television so would have no idea what number to ring, however in Australia surely they could have, after all we gave the Aussies ten points. I was quite pleased to see that Italy, Australia and Sweden got our top marks and Russia made do with a lowly six, but let´s not get into politics or human rights this week! Should Spain ever win, I would gladly go and watch the final live with my little flag waving excitedly, however Sweden is too far, too expensive and too cold for me to visit, as are the Eastern bloc countries, therefore I feel it will be many years before I make the trip to a grand final, if ever! I hope you too enjoyed the fantastic and crazy pageant of Europe safe in the knowledge we have a whole year to prepare for Sweden 2016!

JEANETTE ERATH

Last week we began to learn some phrases with prepositions that are different in English and Spanish and we are going to continue this week. Remembering our pronunciation and grammar we are going to take it step by step, focusing not only on the preposition but also how the words sound and go together. Esta frase, como sabe ya significa What do you think about them? I hope you managed to understand the above, but

Learn Spanish the easy way

just in case, here´s basically what I said: we are going to start this week with the preposition about which has a literal translation in Spanish of sobre or acerca de. However many times we have to use a different preposition in Spanish when in English we use about, for example in the following statement: I am thinking about you we have to change not only the verb tense but also the preposition. So in Spanish we have to say: pienso en ti which literally means I think in you, but, as you know, this makes no sense in English. We can also say ¿Qué piensas de ellos? Which I hope you realise means What do you think about them? My reason for writing in both languages is twofold, firstly to get you reading and trying to understand Spanish with the English translations to help you, and secondly for you to see that I haven´t translated the paragraph word for word. This is an important require-

ment when speaking a foreign language; that is not to translate a sentence or paragraph word for word. It´s best to get the overall idea of the sentence and then put it into words that make sense in the new language. So, continuing with about there are other times when we have to use a different preposition, when you are away from your loved ones, whether your partner, children or other family members, you can write them a note to say soñar conmigo what do you think that might mean? Well the verb soñar means to dream and I hope you know that conmigo means with me, however in English we wouldn´t say dream with me but we can say dream about me. I´m going to continue with the preposition de which is commonly translated as of or from, however it is used a lot more than that with a lot more meanings. Its use is more common in the Spanish form because of

the rules of Spanish being different to English, meaning that in English we can use nouns as adjectives however in Spanish we can´t, therefore to say a silver ring, meaning a ring made from silver, we have to say un anillo de plata, we know this is also used in possessions, such as Jack´s car, which becomes: el coche de Jack. However this is using de as the usual translation of but let´s look now at when it means something else. Along the lines of the above use, if we want to say

whose pencil is this? We have to use de quien for whose, remember the pronunciation ´day key en´ so the entire sentence is ¿de quién es este lápiz? When we compare one thing to another we use de where, in English we would say than, for example: tengo menos de quince euros which means I have less than fifteen euros. We use de in some idiomatic phrases, as ever I´ll give you some examples, just in case you don´t know what I mean: de memoria = by memory, de moda = in style/fashion, de nuevo = again, de pronto = straight away, de prisa = hurriedly, de repente = suddenly, de todas formas = in any case, de vez en cuando = from time to time. Many verbs are followed by de and often an infinitive of another verb, these have to be learnt one by one as there is no reason why one verb is followed by de and another isn´t! It´s the joys of learning another language,

in the past we have covered acabo de which means I have just, as in the phrase acabo de salir = I have just left. Other verbs which use de are. Trartar de = to try to, olivdar de = to forget to, enamorar de = to fall in love with. There are also many other uses of de which I haven´t mentioned above and as such you have to listen to Spanish as often as possible to pick up the uses that you hear. Although it is a small word you should be able to hear it as the Spanish do tend to speak more clearly than us English speakers! Remember also that when de is followed by the article el, meaning "the," they form the contraction del. Thus los libros del colegio is the equivalent of saying los libros de el colegio = the books of the school, we would of course say the school´s books. But no contraction is used for de él, which means his or literally of him…

Coronation Street - The Residents are in Shock In Emmerdale, Vanessa sends Adam upstairs as she finally lets Kirin in but Kirin can tell something’s wrong when he spots the nurse. Vanessa tries to cover but Adam’s phone gives his presence away and he finds Adam upstairs. Kirin is furious when Vanessa makes the admission. And Kirin vows to kill Adam. Meanwhile, as Adam prepares to tell Victoria the truth, Kirin storms in… Things are starting to settle down on Coronation Street as the fire investigators look around the Victoria Court flats Simon questions Ken and Tracy about the blaze, wondering what could have caused it. Tracy snaps at him, her guilt weighing heavily. As Bethany ushers Max and Lily into No.8 she spots someone watching her from across the street. But who is it and what do they want? In Eastenders, Charlie visits the hospital to confront Ronnie about Vincent, but he holds off when she tells him that she is coming home today. Once they are back home and alone together, Charlie asks Ronnie about Vincent. How will she react? Later, Phil has a run-in with Vincent and pays a visit to Ronnie afterwards, telling her that they need to sort him out once and for all. However, it turns out that Ronnie has another idea in mind. Phil can't resist interfering and tells Claudette about Vincent's recent trouble with the police, but she refuses to rise to his baiting and instead warns Vincent to stay away from Phil. Continuing the feud, Vincent tells Phil that he needs money to stay quiet about Carl White.

Football fans have the pleasure of Gary Lineker introducing live coverage of the 134th FA Cup final, between Arsenal and Aston Villa, on BBC 1 tonight. There´s also a return to variety the Saturday with TV presenter and Magician Stephen Mulhern presenting a celebration of 60 years of TV magic shows in The Magic Show Story. From the early days when David Nixon and Tommy Cooper brought magic into the homes of millions, to the heights scaled by groundbreaking American stars like David Copperfield and the breathtaking feats of a new generation of hip young street magicians such as David Blaine and Dynamo. He recreates some famous tricks that made TV history - including sawing David Nixon's glamorous assistant Anita Harris in half - and meets some of his heroes, including Paul Daniels and Penn and Teller. There are interviews with Darcy Oake, Dynamo, Paul Daniels, Anita Harris, Penn and Teller, Geoffrey 'The Great Suprendo' Durham and Ben Hanlin. BBC 1 continues the variety with a new comedy entertainment series hosted by award-winning comedian John Bishop, coming each week from the Hackney Empire. Aptly named, The John Bishop Show, across the eight-part series, John introduces his favourite comics from all over the world, as well as music guests and variety acts. This show features Paul Weller performing his new single Saturn's Pattern and the classic Peacock Suit. Joining John on stage is Trevor Noah from South Africa, James Acaster, and Felicity Ward from Australia. As a special treat, John also creates some beautiful music with Beardyman.

The series has seen even more of the good, the bad, the weird and the wonderful and has showcased the best talent on offer, from singers and magicians to dancers and comedians. The final 10 acts now go head-tohead as they make one last attempt to capture the public's hearts and votes. The lucky winner will receive a cash prize of 250,000 pounds and a guaranteed slot at this year's Royal Variety Performance. Who will be crowned the winner? It is now up to Britain to decide. If you´re looking for a bit of historical drama, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell on BBC 1 sees Jonathan Strange accesses ancient and troubling magic as he fights the Napoleonic armies, while Mr Norrell battles to keep his secrets hidden from Arabella and the increasingly disturbed Lady Pole. In Armada: 12 Days to Save England, Anita Dobson stars as Elizabeth I, and Dan Snow takes to the sea to tell the story of how England came within a whisker of disaster in summer 1588. Using newly discovered documents, Dan relives the fierce battles at sea and looks behind the scenes in the royal court of Elizabeth as the Spanish fleet prepares for full-on invasion.

Ashley takes a turn for the worse as he convulses and the machines start beeping. Harriet, Laurel and Sandy are terrified whether Ashley will pull through. Meanwhile, Robert tells A drunk Laurel gets in the way of doctors who are trying to treat Ashley so Harriet orders Laurel home. The doctor explains Ashley has suffered a seizure and they need to run tests to find out what caused it. Back in the village, drunken Laurel sees Sandy sobbing in Edna’s arms and assumes the worst – That Ashley is dead, with disastrous consequences as she passes on the news. There are lots of spoilers in the paragraph. Laurel arrives at the hospital. She is torn between shame and relief when Harriet explains Ashley is not dead after all. The doctors arrive and inform Harriet they plan to bring Ashley out of his coma but warn her he could have developed epilepsy. In Eastenders, Sharon and Phil continue to play games, meanwhile the Beales receive a scheduled visit from the social worker and Cindy comes clean about her real feelings, admitting that she wants to be as far away from Beth as possible. The social worker reminds Cindy that Jane and Ian can offer a stable home for Beth and that should be the priority. With her world spiralling as things aren't going her way, Cindy is forced to give Jane and Ian a huge ultimatum.

REVELATIONS & REVENGE

Things are still tense around Weatherfield this week, as the drama on the cobbles of Coronation Street continues after last week´s tense story. Investigators start to look into the fire at Victoria Court. And guilt starts to haunt Tracey. Meanwhile, Jenny is still desperate for her devious plan to spring into action, but the big question is whether she´ll get away with it, or if she´s found a new wig supplier. Meanwhile, there are revelations of a different kind as Andy risks being exposed as not being Michael´s son. Gail’s shaken when Susan phones, revealing she’s sent Michael a photo album documenting Gavin’s life. Gail and Andy vow to intercept the parcel before Michael can see it. But when they miss the parcel and it ends up in Norris’ hands it looks like they’re in trouble. Norris refuses to hand it over as it’s addressed to Michael so when Michael returns to No.8 clutching his parcel, Gail and Andy are beside themselves. Michael’s touched by Susan’s thoughtfulness with the album. As he coos over baby pictures of Gavin, Gail and Andy are filled with dread, certain the game’s up. As he turns the pages will Michael realise he’s looking at pictures of a different man? The truth will out, and in Andy´s case, it does so in a very emotional manner. As Andy is forced to reveal his real name, and that he was Gavin’s flatmate, Michael reels. Andy burns with shame as he explains how he came to pose

Meet Paul Coker

as Gavin. Things go from bad to worse for Michael though when Gail admits that she was in on the deception. Gail blusters that she feared the truth would give Michael a heart attack, but he’s furious that she’s been lying to him. As David shows the Cafcass officer into No.8, they’re stunned to walk into a bitter row between Michael, Gail and Andy. The Cafcass officer beats a hasty retreat and David’s furious. Matters go from bad to worse when Gail’s forced to divulge that the real Gavin is dead. As Andy implores Michael to believe he looks on him as his father, how will Michael react? Can he forgive their betrayal or will Michael turn his back on Gail and Andy? There´s some good news for Eileen this week though. Despite being disgusted that Tony’s disappeared and not even bothered trying to contact Liz, Eileen is wined and dined by Adrian at the bistro.

However, when Dev learns about the dinner date, he eagerly suggests they make a foursome, keen to avoid a cosy table for two with Julie. Adrian confides that he’s booked a surprise hotel stay for Eileen, keen to take their relationship to the next level. But just as things are starting to look up for unlucky in love Eileen, she’s thrilled to receive a text from Jeff in Dubai who’s flying into Manchester and wants to meet her for a drink at the Bistro. When Adrian rings, Eileen panics and is grateful when Todd takes the phone, offering to tell him she’s ill. But when Eileen arrives in the Bistro and scans the room for Jeff, she’s horrified to come face to face with a beaming Adrian. Her alarm turns to utter confusion when Todd appears, what has he done? Eileen squirms as Todd gleefully urges Adrian to give Eileen her surprise. Adrian enthuses about a hotel he’s booked for

them. Todd enjoys Eileen’s anxiety, clearly expecting Jeff to arrive at any minute. Unsettled by Todd’s demeanour, Eileen deduces that he set up the meeting with Adrian, and comes to a decision to ditch Jeff and go away with Adrian. Unwilling to permit a happy ending, Todd takes huge delight in informing Adrian about his rival, Eileen’s dream man with whom he could never compete. Adrian’s stung while the penny finally drops for Eileen as she realises that Jeff is really Todd. Can Eileen plead her case with Adrian or has she blown her fledgling relationship? Eileen demands answers from Todd. He bitterly explains it’s payback for the time he was attacked and left scarred after being stood up by his family. Jason’s stunned when Todd confirms that he engineered his split from Eva too. How will Jason react to this? His revenge complete, can Todd stay in Weatherfield?

Eastenders fans are about to be introduced to the latest character to descend on Walford as Les and Pam Coker's grandson Paul arrives in dramatic fashion. As Les and Pam plan to attend a centenary party for their funeral business, Paul's absence is playing on their mind more than ever. However, after Les subsequently turns to Claudette Hubbard for support, he doesn't realise that Paul has already arrived in Albert Square and has spotted them together. It doesn't take long for Paul to make an impression on Lola after accidentally knocking her over in the street, prompting Ben Mitchell to come to her defence.

As Paul plays down the incident and introduces himself to the group, Lola starts to warm to him and invites him for a coffee at Blades. However, with the recent news that Paul will be a new love interest for Ben, does he already have his eyes on someone else? Paul is played by Jonny Labey who was involved in the 2014 production of Soft Lad and performed in the West End musical production of "White Christmas", alongside Tom Chambers, Wendi Peters, Graham Cole, Rachel Stanley and Louise Bowden, at the Dominion Theatre. He graduated from the Bird College of Dance, Music and Theatre Performance in 2014.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Getting a Golden Globe award for best drama is serious stuff and normally a rubber stamp on a piece of original and groundbreaking TV, but I have to say the judges back in January may have got it a wee bit wrong over the new Dominic West-starring drama, The Affair, which is airing on Sky Atlantic. The show examines the effects of an affair between a writer/teacher (played by West) and a waitress (played by fellow Brit, Ruth Wilson). Each episode is split with the story taken from their separate points of view, and is certainly novel, but not Golden Globe earth-shat-

A STRANGE AFFAIR

tering. Sky didn’t even pick up the show until it won the award and thereby got renewed for a second season. Don’t get me wrong. It’s good but not brilliant, and I’d have thought that Sky could have used their money better like in bringing us the next two series of The Americans, dumped last year by ITV. By the time you read this, things should just about have been formulated nicely for this Sunday’s final of Britain’s Got Talent on ITV. Contrary to perception, only three singing acts have won the contest since it first appeared in 2007, and my money is on fourth, in the shape of

Calum Scott, though that is by no means a racing certainty. BGT has been fun all the way, and I agree with Louis Walsh that viewers have got a bit weary of singing contests and want some variety. The X Factor can change

presenters and judges all the time, but it is about the talent and format, and like with American Idol (which will finish next year), it’s perhaps time for a change and a rest. I love the naughtiness of Episodes on BBC2,

which makes me laugh out loud with the wonderful trio of Matt LeBlanc, Tamsin Grieg, and Stephen Mangan feasting on the gross world of US TV decision making. The editing is clever as well, as all the interiors are shot in the UK, whilst the exteriors are good old Los Angeles! Meanwhile, a very big thumbs up to the BBC who have ordered a third series of the hilarious Count Arthur Strong. Let’s hope that schedule it at a more fitting time, rather than a fag end slot after the late evening news. Graham Norton was in fine form in the commentary box for last

Saturday’s Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, which was rightly won by Sweden. I did feel sorry though for the genial Irishman who clearly couldn’t say what he really thought about the dreadful UK entry, which got what it deserved along with the rubbish from Spain. The BBC need to decide whether it wants to take things seriously and put together a quality entry along the lines of what it did a few years ago with Andrew Lloyd Webber, or to stop sending songs and acts that make Britain (one of the pop music centres of the world) a total laughing stock.

Sue wanted to know how to get her new Spanish key- Rita was having problems with Skype being blocked by McAfee board working on her computer

Q

Just a minor query regarding Spanish keyboards. I am unable to get the Spanish n with the tilde over it as in manana etc, even though there is a character key for it as it was a Spanish keyboard. We bought and installed a new Spanish keyboard yesterday and again the same is happening. When I press the key for n+tilde I just get ; or in capitals ; and pressing alt or alt gr does not make any difference. Not a big deal I know, but if I want to write in Spanish then I do need the proper keyboard so do you have any advice on how to fix this? Hi Sue, yep it’s not that straight forward really, for what should be a simple change, but here goes…

A

Q A

Hello - I wonder if you can help me. I accidentally said "block" when my McAfee Security asked if I wanted to block Skype and so now I can't access my Skype. How do I get back my Skype? My mistake of course but I don't know how to rectify it. Would appreciate your assistance. Many thanks - Rita Hi Rita, you will need to open up McAffee and do the following…

1. Open security centre 2. Go Web and email protection 3. Go to firewall 4. go to Internet connection for programs 5. Locate the program that you want to unblock and change its access to the Internet Update: Richard - thank you so much. I really REALLY appreciated your help. Well done. Regards - Rita

Michael was having problems with Microsoft ActiveSync and his Sat Nav system

1. Click Start , type intl.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. 2. On the Keyboards and Language tab, click Change keyboards. 3. Click Add. 4. Expand the language that you want. For example, expand Spanish (Spain, International Sort). 5. Expand Keyboard list, click to select the Spanish check box, and then click OK. 6. In the options, click View Layout to compare the layout with the actual keyboard. In the Default input language list, click Spanish (Spain, International Sort) – Spanish, and then click OK two times. 8. In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK. Note The Language bar appears on the taskbar. When you rest the mouse pointer over this bar, a tooltip appears that describes the active keyboard layout. 10. Click the Language bar, and then click ES Spanish (Spain, International Sort)

Q

Hi Richard, I am trying to install a programme for my sat nav and a programme called `Microsoft active sync` will not install as it says there is not an email programme installed for this. Obviously it will take live mail. It says it cannot complete the installation due to incompatibility problems check on line for a solution which I press but there is no solution for it. Is there anything I can do to install this programme independent from the sat nav installation set up? Hi Michael, I’m not sure why your installation is confusing Microsoft ActiveSync with an email application as the two are very different programmes. ActiveSync is used for some applications to synchronise data between your computer and a mobile device and in this case I suspect that you may be using Windows 7 as this operating system has its own synchronisation software and doesn’t use ActiveSync (that’s an older application used for Windows XP et al)

A

office@bluemoonsolutions.es www.bluemoonsolutions.es

If you are using Windows 7 and your Sat Nav is compatible with this operating system then you should just be able to plug it in and Windows will setup or download ”Windows Mobile Device Centre” automatically for you. Office: 902 906 200 970 655 044 Mobile:

PARKING MYTHS BUSTED IN CONJUCTION WITH N332.ES

One of the latest rumours being circulated through social network sites relates to so-called “blue zones, indicating areas in towns and cities which are controlled parking areas where a fee has to be paid to park. Parking restrictions implemented by local authorities are organised by their own

Ordenanza Reguladora de Aparcamiento, or ORA. The rumour being distributed calls doubt on the legality of these ORA areas, and for that reason, explains how a vehicle owner not only has a way of avoiding paying the parking fee, can also avoid the subsequent fines for doing so.

Sadly though, in a world where a loophole may well result in a fortune in fees and fines, the rumours and speculation is entirely that, a rumour which has no basis in law and is therefore false. The first myth that has been circulating is that the private companies have no authority to issue fines, and

so any motorist is free to park, without paying, and without fear of repercussions. It is indeed true is that the company that controls the parking does not issue fines. They are mostly private companies who manage the service on behalf of the town hall, usually in exchange for a fee. It is the local authority that is responsible for deciding if a penalty should be imposed on an illegally parked motorist, and therefore issues the fine. The private operators who monitor the areas report their findings to the authorities as part of their contractual obli-

gations. The local authority then issues the subsequent fines. Similarly, another myth is that any motorist who pays local road tax is legally entitled to park anywhere in the town without further payment. Again, this is not true. The municipalities are empowered to establish regulated parking areas and to assign the management of fines in those areas to private companies. The rumour mill also suggests that the controlling companies have no right to issue the parking tickets and affix them to the windscreen. It is true that these documents are not what might be considered a sanction, but are in fact a notification of the fact that the vehicle has been reported for the offence named. However, one thing that the parking attendants do not have whereas the police do is the presumption of truth. Therefore, appeals are dealt with without any prejudice to either side, and are processed as per the evidence presented. An example of this might be a driver reported for exceeding the time regulated for parking, who is entitled to ask the complainant for evidence that an infringement has taken place and provide evidence to the contrary. And municipalities are required to consider such appeal, but

remember as a matter of balance, both the complainant and the appellant have to produce the evidence. However, the authorities are no more or less likely to appeal such penalties. In any case, each penalty is considered different and must be studied in depth if it is appealed, how and whether it is worth doing and the individual merits of each case. To summarise, it is true that the private companies do not issue fines and simply report the infractions. In fact, anybody can report a vehicle for illegal parking. It is then up to the local authority to consider if there is sufficient evidence to issue a fine for actions contrary to their own local ordinances and other laws and road tax plays no part in these fines. In short, wherever you might be, parking restrictions may well be in place, whether through the rules of the road or the local authority´s own rules. Always check if you can park and any restrictions that might be in place. Remember the rules of parking in a safe, convenient and legal manner, and forget the rumours that you might have heard on the internet, because if you are in the wrong and you get fined, you have to pay, so try to avoid the problem in the first place.

Friday 29th May 2015 Food & Drink Five espressos worth of caffeine could be damaging to Experts suggest more than 400mg a day could be harmful health, warns EU 90mg, according to the EFSA. There is around 80mg of caffeine in a 250ml standard can of “energy drink”, 40mg in a 355ml can of cola, 25mg in a 50g bar of plain chocolate and 10mg in a 50g bar of milk chocolate. The EFSA said that up to 400mg a day from various food and drink should have no health consequences for healthy adults. About a third of people in Denmark, 17% in the Netherlands and 14% in Germany consume more than 400mg, it was claimed.

Consuming more than five espressos worth of caffeine a day could be damaging to your health, according to European food safety experts. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said single doses of up to 200mg of caffeine from a range of sources – such as tea, coffee, chocolate and energy drinks – should be a safe level for most healthy adults. This is about 3mg per kilogram of body weight from different sources of food and drink, according to an EFSA panel which took a scientific look at the safety of caffeine on the request of the European commission. A 60ml espresso provides about 80mg of caffeine while a 200ml cup of filter coffee has

Should I drink more coffee? Up to 200mg a day should be a safe limit for pregnant women and new mothers who are breastfeeding. Safe limits for children and young adolescents should also be lower than that of adults, the EFSA suggested.

Adults who take too much caffeine can suffer anxiety and problems sleeping while children, who may show the same symptoms, might also show a difference in behaviour. The EFSA study noted: “Chocolate beverages were important contributors to total caffeine intakes in children and toddlers in most countries, and the use of a conservative caffeine value for this food category may have led to an overestimation of caffeine intakes in these age groups.”

Welcome to the world of extreme grilling

Food & Drink Healthy Eating : 5 Best Low Carb Foods

How barbecuing became an extreme sport Welcome to the world of extreme grilling, fire, you see, has become the apogee of cooking among the middle classes and even the home cook has jumped onto the pyrophilia bandwagon. These are the chaps (or chapettes) that won't tolerate shop-bought rubs. Being purists, they seek only fire, smoke and hulking bits of meat. In some cases, a Big Green Egg is evident. Why the obsession? “It’s happened because everything from the grill tastes so delicious,” explains head chef, Josh Katz, of the celebrated restaurant, Berber and Q, in London’s Haggerston. Katz, whose charcoal grilled cauliflower and blackened aubergine is a signature dish, continues: “You've got meat festivals like Meatopia and butcher and chef Richard Turner, who have really put grilling on the map.”

Then there are the numerous grill-centric restaurant openings influencing domestic cooks. Last week, Ottolenghi co-founder Noam Bar opened Sesame, championing smoking street-food from places like Istanbul and Beirut while another coal master, Tom Harris, best known for One Leicester Street, has re-launched the Marksman in Hackney with a big grill focus. But how can you keep up the pace? Here are the top tips to improving your grill skills.

Select cuts most home cooks wouldn’t dream of barbecuing Forget boring old sausages: whole beasts, whole birds and other unlikely joints like lamb shoulder, brisket, cheeks, feather blades and brains can all taste delicious when grilled. Don't automatically up the heat Low and slow is the new trend: “I like cooking whole chicken and feather blades for 5-6 hours on 120-130C.” The results will be delicious.

Most health conscious or health enthusiasts prefer to stick to a low carb diet which basically means cutting out fruits, cereals, grains and sugar from the diet. And if you are following a low carb diet for weight loss, then you must know the best 5 foods for a low carb diet. Chicken and fish are rich in proteins and low in carbs. These are popular items for those who are following low carb diet. Protein is needed for tissue repair and serves as the bodies building blocks. Red meat like pork and mutton are perfect low carb diet items especially if it is consumed in moderation. Red meat is a good source for iron and high in protein. Salad vegetables like cucumber and iceberg lettuce and broccoliand cauliflower are low in

carbs. You can include non starchy vegetables in a low carb diet as well. Dairy products like cheese-cheddar and parmesan are ingredients you can use in a low carb diet. But exclude yogurt and milk which are high sources for carbohydrates. Certain fruits like coconut, apples, papaya, peaches and strawberries are low in carbs. There are few exceptions on which fruits are low in carbs. But low sugar content in fruit does not mean low carbs either.

One fish, two different meal ideas Make the most of your leftovers from a succulent whole fish It’s true that a whole fish can be rather daunting: guts, scales, fins and eyeballs to stare back at you. But the fact is, fish cooked on the bone – just like meat – is more succulent, moist and flavourful, and provides a brilliant centrepiece for any meal. Gurnard, pouting, pollock, hake (pictured) or coley are all good sustainable choices with a nice quantity of meat and round frame. Buy linecaught fish whenever possible as it’s a low impact fishing method and also unfortunately one of the only fishing methods advertised by a fishmonger. I’d always recommend shopping at your local fishmonger, but when shopping in the supermarket look for the Marine Stewardship Council’s MSC stamp of sustainability. Any fish left on the bone after the main event can be kept to use in any (or all) of the following three recipes. After your meal, clean all the flakes of meat off the carcass. It will store in a sealed container for up to five days in the refrigerator.

Fish en papillote with fennel and lemon

A simple way to cook a whole fish is sealed and wrapped inside parchment, or “en papillote”. The parcel acts as a mini oven, steaming the fish and helping to keep it very moist. All the flavours trapped in the bag

infuse with the meat. This method will work with all whole fish, although cooking times will vary depend-

pepper. Fold in the ends of the parchment, then pull it up around the fish. Fold the edges together to form a

ing on the size. Serves 5-7. 1.5-2kg whole round fish, gills removed, gutted and scaled, 1 unwaxed lemon, sliced into rounds, 4 garlic cloves, crushed, with skin on, 1 bulb fennel, cut in half and thinly sliced. Extra virgin olive oil, to taste, Salt and black pepper. Potatoes, salsa verde and or aioli to serve (optional). 1 Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4. Tear off a piece of parchment that’s roughly 2½ times the length of your fish. Create a bed of lemon, garlic and fennel slices along the middle of the parchment. Lay the fish on top of this bed, then stuff the cavity with some of the fennel and garlic. 2 Drizzle some olive oil over the fish and season with plenty of salt and black

sealed bag. 3 Put the fish parcel into the oven for 25 minutes for the first 1kg, then 5 minutes for each extra 500g. A 2kg fish, for example, should take about 35 minutes to cook, but all fish are slightly different in shape, so some may take a little longer. To check the fish is cooked properly, remove it from the oven, unwrap the parchment – being careful of the steam – and prise the flesh away from the bone at the thick end of the neck. If it pulls away, it is ready to eat. Serve as a centrepiece with the fennel, some potatoes and salsa verde or aioli.

Karen and Franck look forward to seeing you there and to give you a warm welcome. Le Petit Cochon Restaurant/Bistro offers fresh home-made food at affordable prices!

We serve these croquettes by the dozen in my restaurant, Poco. They are quick to make and satisfying to eat. Makes 12-15, 300g floury potatoes, such as a desire or king edward, skins on, ½ small onion, grated, strained 2 sprigs parsley, leaves roughly chopped, stalks finely chopped. A small pinch of chilli flakes, 200g leftover fish flakes or cooked white fish, 1 small egg, 1½ tbsp wholemeal or plain flour, 500ml oil, for frying Sea salt, Lemon wedges, to

serve. 1 Boil the potatoes for around 20 minutes, or until tender. Drain, allow to cool a little, then peel off the skins. 2 Mash the peeled potatoes with the grated onion, parsley leaves and stalks, chilli flakes and flour, then stir in the fish and egg with a generous amount of seasoning. You can prepare the croquettes up to this stage in advance. 3 When you are ready to eat, put the oil into a saucepan, making sure the oil doesn’t reach higher

than ⅓ of the way up the sides. Put on a mediumhigh heat and bring up to 160-170C/320‑340F. Test to see if the oil is hot enough by dropping a tiny piece of the mixture into the oil. If it bubbles and rises to the top, it’s ready. Carefully place large teaspoons of the mixture into the oil. Fry for 3-5 minutes, turning them if necessary. When the croquettes are golden brown remove them from the oil and rest on a piece of kitchen roll. Season with sea salt and serve with wedges of lemon.

Bowel disorders have become very common in recent times. Over a third of the consultations for a diagnostic scan at our clinic are due to bowel disorders. And the usual complaints include: heart burn, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea and fatigue. They results from the scan varies from case to case, nevertheless there are some commonly shared findings. In most cases there is acute inflammation of the entire digestive tract and digestive organs such as the liver and gall bladder. In chronic

WHY ARE BOWEL DISORDERS SO COMMON?

cases, the inflammation also spreads to the pelvic and genital organs. In addition, there is also the erosion of the delicate linings of the stomach and small intestine, which impairs the absorption of nutrients. The digestive organs, particularly the liver play the important role of detoxifying or removing toxins from the body. These toxins come from the foods, drinks and even medications that we consume and over time, the detoxification organs which includes the liver, stomach, intestines, gall bladder – become

depleted of the essential nutrients needed for detoxification to run smoothly. When the detox process is impaired, the digestive organs become storage containers for toxins. The commonly found toxins in the body such as mercury, lead, aluminium, pesticides and insecticides have all been linked to inflammation. Some toxins like mercury, also promote the growth of deadly microbes such as E. coli, staphylococcus and streptococcus. The growth of such deadly bugs spells havoc for the digestive sys-

tem as they displace resident beneficial microbes in the digestive tract such as lactobacillus. Truth be told, most digestive disorders originate from a poor or incompatible diet. Most people are generally unhappy to learn that wheat and wheat based foods may be the cause of their digestive problems, and that eliminating wheat from their diet may be the solution to their digestive problem. Does paracetamol do you more harm than good? You have a headache after a glass of wine too many. Your back aches from another day hunched over a keyboard. That old shoulder injury is playing up again. What do you do? There is a good chance that you will

reach for the unglamorous white pills lurking in your medicine cabinet. Paracetamol is the workhorse painkiller. GPs wrote 22.5m prescriptions for it in 2013. Around 200m packets of it are sold annually,

accounting for two-thirds of the UK market for over-thecounter painkillers. It is widely viewed as cheap, safe and effective. At around 2p per 500mg tablet, it certainly is cheap. But safe and effective?

Although the potentially fatal consequences of taking a paracetamol overdose are well known, the widespread belief has been that the drug is mild and relatively safe if taken at the recommended dose. However, this is

increasingly being questioned by scientists, who say that taking it over prolonged periods can have serious side-effects. That might seem a risk worth taking if it were not for recent research that suggests the drug either doesn’t work, or has only a very small effect for most people. Paracetamol rose to prominence during the 1960s in the wake of fears that aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen could cause gastric bleeding, ulcers and other serious side-effects. Some concerns were raised about the possibility that long-term use of paracetamol could also cause internal bleeding, but the evidence for that was mixed for many years. However, in 2011, Professor Michael Doherty, a rheumatologist at Nottingham University, published a study looking at almost 900 patients aged 40 and older who took paracetamol, ibuprofen or a combination of both for chronic knee pain. When he compared the participants after 13 weeks, it came as no surprise that one in five on ibuprofen lost the equivalent of a unit of blood through internal bleeding. What was surprising was that so, too, had the same proportion of patients who

were taking paracetamol. Paracetamol can actually be a very dangerous drug,” says Dr John Dickson, who retired from general practice in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, last year. “It can cause kidney and liver problems, and causes as much gastrointestinal bleeding as the NSAIDs.” In the UK, in draft guidelines issued in 2013, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) advised GPs that they should no longer prescribe paracetamol for osteoarthritis, suggesting it had “limited benefit” and highlighting links of higher doses to cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and renal problems. Doctors, though, were quick to criticise the new advice on the grounds that it would leave them either telling patients to simply endure their pain or lead to greater use of stronger, potentially more harmful opiate-based alternatives such as tramadol and diamorphine. In its final recommendation last year, Nice performed a U-turn, reinstating its previous backing of paracetamol, pending the outcome of a broad review of over-the-counter painkillers by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, the results of which are due later this year.

I went to see the doctor for a yearly check-up, and after a blood test he noticed some problems with my thyroid gland and sent me for an Ultrasound Scan. They found 3 small nodules, but didn’t tell me very much about it. I feel very healthy, and I don’t think I have any problems with my thyroid. What do you think?

A

The thyroid gland is located in front of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. It is shaped like a butterfly, and wraps around the trachea or windpipes. Thyroid gland abnormalities like those detected

by your doctor typically originate directly from the thyroid gland. Normally, the pituitary gland located in the brain controls the thyroid gland by secreting a protein called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones-Thyroxine

(T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid nodules are lumps that commonly occur in any part of the thyroid gland. Some are quite large and can be felt easily with the hands, while others such as yours can be hidden deep inside the thyroid tissue and not palpable.

Most thyroid nodules, up to 90%, are benign, and do not cause any physical symptoms. In 10% of cases, nodules can be malignant and cause cancer. Since you mentioned that you feel healthy, it is most likely that the nodules detected in your case are benign lumps, and these are commonly found in women. Even though benign thyroid nodules may not cause physical symptoms such as swallowing problems or shortness of breath, they nevertheless can cause disruptions in the production of thyroid hormones. Thyroid nodules have been linked to a deficiency of iodine in the diet, and this problem can easily be remedied by using iodized cooking salt avail-

able from health shops. The most accurate way to determine the exact type of nodule that you have is through fine needle aspiration and this is usually done by GP’s. However my advice to you is to stay away from the pro-

cedure unless absolutely necessary. Many health professionals believe that inserting a needle into an already contained mass or lump can cause more problems by spilling the contents into surrounding tissues.

How safe are medical diagnostic scans? Diagnostic scans are useful for examining the insides of the body. The most popular kinds available are X-rays, CT scans, MRI’s endoscopies, and blood tests. Other kinds of diagnostic scans are EEG (Electroencephalograph) and ECG (Electrocardiograph). Xrays and blood tests are routinely used in hospitals because they are cheap. However X-rays exposes the body to deadly ionizing radiation. The damaging effects of x-rays are cumulative, so the more xrays a person is exposed to, the greater the damage

to their organs. X-rays have been associated with many chronic diseases especially many kinds of cancers. Recent studies have shown that mammograms (breast x-rays) contribute to 20% of all breast cancers. CT scans are like X-rays on steroids. CT scans take a 3D Xrayed picture of the body, and in the process, exposes the body to thousands of times more radiation than X-rays. Many studies have suggested that the rampant use of CT scans have contributed to the skyrocketing incidence of cancers observed today. MRIs are a lot safer than

CT scans, and do a much better job, however MRI’s are expensive, and are rarely recommended to patients in public hospitals. ECG’s and EEG’s are also safe and effective diagnostic technologies because they are noninvasive and measure the frequencies or vibrations emanating from the body. The diagnostic scan performed at MedB clinic is the most advanced form of diagnostics available in the world today. Unlike other diagnostic imaging technologies such as MRIs that are subject to human error during analysis, our technology uses

advanced computerized systems and calculations to reach a diagnosis by measuring electromagnet-

ic frequencies emanating from the body. The scan also checks for contaminants and microbes in all

organs of the body, and also carries out a full blood test without collecting a single drop of blood.

Horoscopes Aries March 21-April 20 With your ruler, Mars, stirring up confusion in your chart’s communication zone, you could be tempted to put someone under pressure, or misread their real intentions. Something you discover later in the week could make you see your situation in a very different light. All is not what it appears, so hold your fire and bide your time.

Taurus April 21-May 21 Your financial situation may preoccupy you now, but do not let it make you give up on a current plan, or feel that you should push through major changes. An unexpected sequence of events later in the week could also boost your confidence and help you to build firm foundations for the future. Take a positive, relaxed approach.

Gemini May 22-June 21 Opposition to your plans from someone close may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, so listen to advice, slow down and wait until you see your way ahead. The key to getting what you want is patience. An unexpected conversation could also help you turn a tricky situation to your advantage.

Cancer June 22-July 23 Career changes that you may not have foreseen could make it hard to see a current project through, or point you in a new direction altogether. Do not make a rushed decision. With diplomatic Venus in your sign, you can sidestep a potential problem, so hold your course a short while longer. You will find the right way forward sooner than you think.

Friday 29th May 2015

By Pandora Leo July 24-August 23 Do not let advice from friends undermine your confidence in your own judgment in the week ahead. Only you know where you really want to go from here, so insist that others give you extra space. If you are true to your own vision, you could also come up with a new solution to a problem or dilemma. Plan to socialise from Thursday.

Virgo August 24-September 23 Put ambitious plans on hold and focus on your home life and your most important bonds. Time off could also help you see your situation in perspective. It seems that there is more than one route to your goal, so be prepared to take a more relaxed and roundabout approach. You could also find you have a new, and unexpected, ally.

Libra September 24-October 23 The solution to a recent problem may appear to be within your reach this week, but this is not the time to press home your advantage. If you let events unfold instead of trying to take control, you can avoid resistance to your plans from those who count. If you are diplomatic, you can also find out something that you badly need to know.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 Confidence and independence are the keys to solving certain problems that have held you back, so trust your judgment now and do not hesitate to branch out on your own. A current project could soon start to pay real dividends, especially if you do not sell yourself too short. All you need to do is have more faith in what you have to offer.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Pressure from a friend or loved one to change course could make you all the more determined to resist and do things your way in the week ahead. You can avoid problems if you take the line of least resistance and relax, so put your plans on hold and let others feel that they are making the decisions. Long-term, you hold a winning hand.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 With your ruler, realistic Saturn, now at odds with both the Sun and Mars, you could find it hard to make a friend or colleague see things from your angle. Let them be until the planetary pattern changes later in the week. They will come round to your point of view if you give them extra space, so stand back, relax and focus on your private, inner world.

Aquarius January 21 - February 19 Making your own decisions and blazing your own trail is the way to break free from a situation that you find restrictive, so let no one tell you how to live your life this week. It also seems you have more options than you think, so plan ahead and do not limit your horizons. An unexpected piece of news could put you in a very strong position.

Pisces February 20 - March 20 Put domestic problems or decisions to one side and concentrate on drawing up constructive plans. The time has not yet come to put them into action, but what matters most this week is being prepared, so focus on the details now. Feedback from someone close later in the week could also make you see a certain situation is not cast in stone.

The kind of guy who makes you think, “If I could just be a bit more like him.” THE GREAT ENCOURAGER The great encourager is a master psychologist. He knows when to keep quiet; he knows when to shoot you a quick look that says, “I feel your pain – hang on in there”; and he knows when to come right alongside, put his arm round your shoulder and say, “Come on, you can still do this,” just as things seem to be slipping away. Great encourager, we salute you.

THE RADAR TRACKER When you’re playing straight into the sun, or it’s one of those days when it’s virtually impossible to pick the ball out against the sky, you need the radar tracker in your group. Whatever the conditions, he’ll follow your ball like a hawk until it safely rejoins terra firma, before pronouncing confidently, “Got that one,” just as you’re reaching in your bag for a provisional. Worth his weight in both shots and golf balls. THE HUNTER HAWK A close cousin of the radar tracker, the hunter hawk is also a very handy ally. For a start, he too takes the trouble to actually follow your ball, then keeps his eye

locked on the landing area all the way down from the tee, whereupon he becomes imbued with canine-like sniffing skills to ensure it is located long before lost ball panic sets in. In the rare event of the search taking a couple of minutes, he’ll typically find three of four more balls too, which he’ll chuck over to you as he only uses a certain type. THE SHREWD PRAISER From the same family as the great encourager, the shrewd praiser knows when to apply a suitable delay filter before commenting on the shot you’ve just played. Not for him the false platitude of an instant “great strike” just because the

impact sound suggests solid contact. He will wait until he can see where it’s heading before making either a suitably considered assessment or simply saying nothing at all if more appropriate. THE JOLLY FLAGMAN On every hole you play, someone in your group will have to either tend or remove the flag at some stage, and put it back in when everyone has holed out. Step up the jolly flagman, who will always be on hand to see that everything is done in a timely fashion. “Tended or out?” he’ll ask even before you’re ready to go. And he’ll be equally eager to do more than his fair share of flag replacing work when everyone’s done. MR SOCIABLE It doesn’t matter how well or how badly he’s played, Mr Sociable will always be first to the bar afterwards, with a cheery, “What are you having?” While others might hurl the clubs in the boot, before screeching out of the car park in a self-centred rage after a poor round or last-minute collapse, Mr Sociable is having none of that. For him, it’s as much about the banter and the company as the golf. Just don’t forget to reciprocate with the second round. GOLF’S TOP TEN ANNOYANCES Even the most ardent golf fan will have a long list of things that annoy them about the game, and here are ten examples you might just be able to relate to. Most amateur golfers have a love-hate relationship with the sport. The highs are tough to beat, the lows are tough to bear. We can all reel off a list of the things that irritate us about the game and some will be more fickle than others. Here are ten things that might just get your goat… see if you agree. SLOW PLAY

A look at your watch shows it’s been four hours since you teed off and you’re only on the 16th fairway. You’ve waited on every single shot but the group ahead seems totally oblivious. Aaarggghhh! MISSING THE BUFFER ZONE BY A SINGLE SHOT You’ve battled all the way round to keep your score respectable but, despite your efforts, your handicap still goes up by 0.1 by the narrowest of margins. You might as well have shot 150. THE COURSE BEING CLOSED The true golf lover is prepared to forge out onto the links no matter what the weather is doing. There’s only one thing that can stop him – the dreaded “Course Closed” sign. LOSING A BRAND-NEW BALL You crack open a new sleeve, mark your ball and tee it up. The feeling of loss is huge as you watch it disappear into the middle of a lake – €6.50 gone in the blink of an eye. LUDICROUS CLUB DRESS CODES The outdated dress code embodies the pompous stuffiness that still plagues some golf clubs. For example having to wear knee length socks in the summer! MISSING A SHORT PUTT ON THE FINAL GREEN

No matter how well you’ve played, you’ll be kicking yourself for the rest of the day at the shot that got away right at the death. THE DUFFED CHIP The chip shot should be so straightforward, so why is it so damned difficult? You’ve only 20 yards to the pin but manage to advance the ball just a couple of feet. Is there a more disgusting feeling to be had on the golf course? BANDITS You post your best Medal round of the year only to be beaten into second place by a 24 handicapper who returns a nett 56. You should be magnanimous in defeat but you just can’t! A BUNKER FILLED WITH WATER The most unfair rule in golf? Your ball narrowly misses the green and topples into a bunker. It’s brimming with water with no chance of relief within the hazard. So you’re forced to take a penalty drop behind the trap, and now you have to play back over it! A SKY MARK ON A NEW DRIVER You’re so proud of this shiny new weapon and it’s made you the envy of your friends. Now it’s been tarnished all because you teed the ball too high causing the ball to scratch the top of your new weapon and your friends are less interested.

TITTER ON THE TEE KNOW YOUR RULES

A Scotsman and his lady friend walked past a swanky new restaurant. "Did you smell that food?" she asked, "Incredible!" Being a 'kind-hearted Scot' he thought, "What the heck; I'll treat her!" So, they walked past it again.

QUESTION

If your ball comes to rest in casual water in a bunker, what is the rule? A: You may drop without penalty at the nearest point of relief in the bunker, no nearer the hole. B: Drop outside the bunker without penalty. C: Drop anywhere you find a dry spot in the bunker.

ANSWER A: Rule 25.1. If the ball is in the bunker he must lift the ball and drop it: Without penalty, in accordance with Clause (i) above, except that the nearest point of relief must be in the bunker and the ball must be dropped in the bunker. Or under penalty of one stroke, outside the bunker keeping the point where the ball lay directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped.

PARTY POOPERS Xavi's Nou Camp farewell was spoiled slightly as Deportivo La Coruna fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Barcelona and guarantee their La Liga survival in the process.

Long-serving midfielder Xavi will bring an end to an 18-year Barca career when he leaves for Qatari side Al-Sadd in the summer and Lionel Messi looked to have given him the

perfect send-off when he scored in both halves to put the newly-crowned champions into a 2-0 lead. But Deportivo were fighting for their top-flight lives and Lucas

Perez gave them hope with an exquisite long-range strike in the 67th minute before Diogo Salomao also struck from distance nine minutes later to earn a priceless point which pre-

REAL MADRID 7

Real Madrid signed off their season in what was last Ancelotti’s Carlo match in charge before Monday’s sacking, with an

impressive victory over Getafe featuring yet another Cristiano Ronaldo hattrick. The Portugal forward struck three times before

half-time - but his team still did not have the lead after explosive finishes from Sergio trio Getafe Escudero, Diego Castro

and Mehdi Lacen. Second-half goals from Javier Hernandez, James Jese Rodriguez, Rodriguez and Marcelo

WASTED FINALE

Elche missed a string of chances, including a penalty, as they were held to a goalless draw at Levante in their final Primera Division game of the season last Saturday. The point means that the Ilicitanos finish the season in a respectable 13th place on 41 points, a far cry from being a good bet for relegation at the turn

of the year. Elche's top scorer and talisman Jonathas de Jesus was suspended for the final game of the season - and the Brazilian's likely last game with the club - so Cristian Herrera began in attack. Levante created the first opportunity, working down the left hand side and back to the edge of the

area, where Jose Luis Morales tried his luck but shot a couple of feet over the bar. Elche came flying down the other end almost immediately after, with Niguez crossing from the left for Victor Rodriguez to volley at goal, but Marino came off his line to quickly to block the shot with his body.

LEVANTE 0

Elche showed more initiative in the second half and were given the ideal opportunity to take the lead on 66 minutes, when Levante leftback Tono was judged to have pulled back Niguez in the box as he tried to get on the end of Mario Pasalic's cross. Niguez decided to take the penalty himself rather than the usual taker

David Lomban and he chose to shoot straight down the middle and Marino stayed put, parrying the spot-kick and also getting in the way as Niguez tried to pounce on the rebound. Elche coach Fran Escriba fumed afterwards that Niguez had no right to have taken the kick as opposed to Lomban.

Elche had another chance to break the deadlock on 74 minutes, as Herrera was released on the left hand side of the area, but the striker shot wide of the far post after taking several touches. Herrera again found himself through on goal a few minutes later but Marino came out to smother the shot.

ANOTHER THRASHING CD DOLORES 5

After three good wins for Montesinos, they’ve now suffered a hat-trick of heavy defeats against the top sides in the league. Once again Monte boss Juanpe kicked off three at

the back, in a match that produced chances for both sides in the first half hour. Monte keeper Lopez produced a fine save on the quarter hour mark on a one on one situation, and then

another in similar circumstances which forced a shot to go just past the post. At the other end, Fernando saw a fierce shot go wide, and then Vaz had a shot deflected for a corner.

CD MONTESINOS 2

Monte’s problems started after 30 minutes, when they gave away a soft penalty, which Lopez almost saved, and then after Carlos forced a fine save from the Dolores keeper, the home side doubled their advantage after the Monte defenders failed to clear the ball from inside

the penalty area. Early in the second half, Vaz was brought down in the box, and pulled a goal back courtesy of his penalty kick, but the home side replied with two quick goals, including a Lopez keeping mistake to seal up the match. With ten minutes

remaining, Monte went five down, but Vaz got a late consolation penalty to add a modicum of respectability to the final score. Monte’s final match of the season is this Sunday when they entertain Benijofar with a 5.30pm kick off.

Gossip SNAKES AND LADDERS

JOHN McGREGOR

So now we know. Down, down, down slide Haunted Hull, Brave Burnley and Quite Possibly Rabid, the thwarted three being replaced by the thrilling, thrusting trio of Brilliant Bournemouth, FiveManagers (?) Watford and now Nourishing Norwich no doubt Delia’s baked a few cakes to celebrate, well done to all three. Mind you, there’s a few repercussions in the strive-drive to climb the ladder of success to get out of the Championship - as sneaky Steve McClaren at Derby found out on Monday when he got his cards. The Pride Park hierarchy obviously didn’t like the snake-like way their manager was constantly linked with Newcastle, especially when Alan Pardew left St James Park in January. After leading the Championship in February, Derby then inexplicably won only 12 points from 13 games, culminating in losing their last home game 3 – 0 to lowly Reading. The ‘Ramifications’ meant no play-offs, and this obviously hurt badly after Derby being hot play-off favourites last year but surprisingly and ‘Finally’ losing out to Harry Redknapp’s QPR. So as one door slams shut, una otre abierta? Managerial massacres are also rife sur le continent here in Spain, big time. By merely losing the Spanish La Liga title to the hated Barcelona, second-placed Real Madrid have sacked manager Carlo Ancelotti, like they do. Sin problema, Rafa Benitez is flying in from Napoli to take his turn on the spit at the Bernabeu. Meanwhile Ancelotti’s assistant, the highly-rated Englishman Paul Clement

Napoli manager, Rafa Benitez, is the hot favourite to take the poisoned chalice that is the managerial hot seat at Real Madrid, after Carlo Ancelotti was shown the door on Monday after two seasons in charge. The Italian, 55, led Real to victory in the Copa del Rey before claiming the

looks set to proudly climb the ladder to be number one at Pride Park. Although the all year round climate is much cooler in the East

Midlands, the temperature in the Derby hot seat will be high this coming season (*N.B see below). So will McClaren slither off to Tyneside now to work for the snidey Mike Ashley? The job needs a big man to take over at St James’ Park, where the Toon Army have been starved of success for too long – but is murky McClaren the man? The ‘Wally-with-the-Brolly’s track record is not exactly starstudded - as well as coaching England from 2006/7, sacked Stevie was previously manager at Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg - and Nottingham Forest, where he is reviled at the City Ground after deserting to Derby; so now yesterday’s hero-to-zero man would not be advised to show his tail around the area. East Midlands flashback: On 1st November 1969 I

was home in Nottingham on weekend leave from the RAF and my beloved Forest were playing away. I noticed that neighbours Derby, newly promoted from Division Two were home to mighty Liverpool. The Rams had some new young loudmouth manager, so I slummed it over to the extremelym o d e s t Baseball G r o u n d , where it hissed it down persistently – and saw a brilliant (mainly) young Derby team murder

Tommy Smith, Ron Yeats and Ian St John etc – and believe me, you just didn’t (dare) do that to Liverpool in those days. But Brian Clough’s new Derby side did - and the football world suddenly began to take notice…. Back to the future: last Sunday in Steven Gerrard’s final game for Liverpool, the legend duly obliged with a sign-off goal after a typical surging run and finish: great, well done, and goodbye Stevie. Erm, just one problem… Stoke had already scored five by then, and a sixth was on its way. What? Liverpool beaten 6 – 1? No way, that just doesn’t ever happen to t h e

the great Liverpool side 4 – 0. I watched in disbelief as Kevin Hector, Alan (Gladys) Hinton, Dave Mackay and Roy McFarland (ironically a Scouser himself) tore the Mersey maestros apart. Yes ‘that’ side, containing the likes of E m l y n Hughes,

Reds – does it? Now I’m not suggesting S t o k e are going where

D e r b y ( a n d t h e n

Forest) w e n t with

Cloughie, but the Potters have done really well under Mark Hughes, their ninth place their highest finish ever. As for Liverpool, poor old Brendan Rodgers has some curly questions to answer from owners Fenway Sports, but then so have his employers who sanctioned stupid buys like mental Mario – who’s apparently staying… More managerial mayhem at withering West Ham. It’s deplorable what the s n a k e - l i k e Hammers fans did to get Sam Allardyce the boot. The Big Man delivered, Sam got their miserable skins out of the Championship which is an art in itself (ask Middlesborough,

ARRIVERDERCI CARLO

Champions League title last season. But this year they were knocked out by Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals, while Barcelona won La Liga, with Real finishing second. Club president Florentino Perez said it had "not been an easy decision" before thanking Ancelotti and

adding that a new manager would be appointed "next week". "What did Ancelotti do wrong? I don't know," Perez added. "The demands here at Real Madrid are very high. The affection that the players and the fans have for Carlo is the same as the affection I myself have for him."

Brentford, Ipswich – and Derby). Sam’s second brief was then to keep them in the Prem, another masterful art which again he has brilliantly succeeded in. Despite some savage injuries to key players like Andy Carroll, the East Londoners still f i n ished

twelfth. Sam has left the happily-challenged Hammers in a much better state than he found them. The trouble with West Ham is that they think they’re bigger and better than they are – today an ordinary, alsoran East London club who dine out on fifty-year-old glories. To ‘grace’ the Olympic Stadium, a more grateful and appreciative fan base would be stand the Hammers in better stead. *Sad P.S. I see ex-Derby boss and former Forest favourite player Nigel Clough also got the managerial boot at fifth-placed Sheffield United in Division One. The 49 year-old will never emulate his Dad as a manager, he’s too nice, but he was some player. I saw Clough Junior scoring League Cup Final goals for Forest in the eighties. Pack it up now, Our Nigel, I say (he won’t, though).

Friday 29th May 2015

Do you yearn for the old days, when the FA Cup Final took over your whole Saturday? Y’know, how both teams got there, their ‘celebrity’ supporters, interviews with old has beens/never wases, loads of player and manager interviews; plus of course the obligatory ‘experts’ – made up of the usual suspects plus an old boy or two from the respective sides… you do remember? Well, get the lunch and dinner takeaways organised, and

E H T R O UP F CUP!

tune into BBC1 after breakfast on Saturday and you’ll be in your element for the rest of the day. The kick-offs not till 6.30 pm Spanish

time – so see you down the pub about nine o’clock (ready for the Copa del Rey final!). On paper, this year’s Arsenal-Villa final looks good – although on grass it might not be so, you know how sometimes these affairs can be such a disappointment. It’s a bit ‘David and Goliath’ Prem League-wise, nicely set up with the big Gun(ner)s from The Smoke against the more regional Second City Slickers. Typically the Londoners finished near the top of the league, the nearly men who drive their loyal fans potty, and they’re against the Brummies who just escaped relegation and - well, actually they drive their loyal fans potty too.

WILL CHRISTIAN BE GUNNED DOWN? In the Red Corner, Arsenal are big favourites after winning the Cup last year, and thus for a while keeping any more lines from adding to Arsene Wenger’s road map face. In last Saturday’s final 4 – 1 win over West Brom at the Emirates, it looked more like a goalscorers thank you benefit match, the plaudits were going to the most hard-working Arsenal staff in the club – that’s the overworked physios who were personally lauded after first Theo Walcott’s hat trick and then Jack Wilshere’s solo volley, not a sick-note in sight – astounding for Arsenal. Is it because of the Final, he asked cynically? Personally I think the Gunners’ 17 goal Chilean Alex Sanchez deserves a medal this season, but what do I know? I do know one thing though – if Arsenal lose there

will be enormous pressure, as usual for weary Wenger to step down (which he won’t) – the moaning led, of course by loudmouth Piers Morgan who is always wheeled out on such occasions. This will be after all this season’s usual promise, one step forward then two back, eventually finishing third, also-rans as usual. But Saturday is a truly mustwin/daren’t lose game for the Princess Margaret’s of the Prem. In the Blue and Claret corner is an interesting and dangerous opponent, an unpredictable one, so schizophrenic not even they themselves know which one will turn up on Saturday. This strange bunch of Villains can really turn it on, even at Wembley of all places: they did it recently in the semi-final and pasted Liverpool, the fancied opposi-

tion. Yebbut, nobbut a week later they went and lost 6 – 1 to Southampton, playing like a team who’ve never been introduced to each other. In their armoury is Christian Benteke a huge, marauding beast of a centre forward, who very unChristian-like can effortlessly climb above any opposition to power in his headers, and supported by some other decent international players at Villa Park, ones who can run games and dictate the pace: but will they on Saturday?

OLD HAND V NEW BOY In terms of managerial majesty, it’s Old Master v brash newcomer. Anyone remember Bruce Rioch? He was the last Arsenal manager way back in 1995 before now-ancient Arsene took over and what a Wengerreign it has been. But the Frenchman’s finer days appear to be over, now not competing with Fergie and Man United but today it’s Mourinho’s Chelsea and Pellegrini’s Man City who are the phenomenal foes that Arsene’s Army struggle to

beat. Tomorrow’s opponent is the new kid on the block: Tim Sherwood is a young, self-confident Englishman who has been given the key to the managerial mafia, the reins of a mighty Midlands dynasty with huge history – and big baggage and expectation that goes with the job. The 46 year-old had a short and eventful baptism of fire at White Hart Lane and now appears to have grasped some, if not all of the strange range of managerial skills needed to survive in the

Prem, and where Villa have just ended up fourth from bottom narrowly escaping relegation– but Birmingham’s biggest are in the Cup Final: that’s football for you. It would appear the main battle on the field will be for supremacy of the midfield where Arsenal appear to have a surfeit of gold, with riches beyond measure. But on the day the Gunners can only field, say four or five from Cazorla, Wilshere, Ramsey, Ozil, Oxlade-

Chamberlain, Rosicky, Diaby, Arteta, Flamini, Coquelin – oh, and then there’s a few minor others to slot in ahead of them - like Sanchez, Giroud, Welbeck and Walcott…. Will a selection from Villa’s Cleverley, Carles Gil, Sanchez, Delph, Sinclair, Cole, Bacuna, Grealish, Westwood and N’Zogbia be able to compete and get the ball to Benteke, Weimann and Agbonlahor? Prediction? Heart wants Aston Villa, head says Arsenal.
