EASY PICKINGS FOR CAR HIRE CROOKS

ALEX TRELINSKI

O

rganised gangs are ripping off car rental firms with a massive rise in vehicles being illegally shipped out of Spain to Northern Africa and Eastern Europe, with numbers trebling over just one year. The Costa Blanca and Murcia regions have been identified as the main “hot spots” for the crooks, with Spanish bureaucracy making the country a fertile breeding ground for the rental thieves. The alarming government figures were disclosed at the annual meeting of Spain’s rental car association, FENEVAL, in Alicante, which featured delegates from key companies like Hertz, Europcar, and Goldcar. The latest available statistics date back to 2013 and show that almost 18 thousand vehicles were never returned across Spain, nearly three times as much compared to the figures for 2012. Only around fifteen hundred of those stolen vehicles were recovered in 2013, with most of the rest being shipped or driven out of the country by organised gangs, once they’ve concocted a set of forged documents for each car. They are

then exported in containers either via the southern port of Algeciras or they many make a far more convoluted journey (by-passing potential risks at local ports like Alicante and Almeria) by being taken overland all the way to the Belgian port of Antwerp, before being shipped back south to North African countries like Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania. Lorries are also used to take the cars to Eastern European countries like Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia. The gangs would then make substantial amounts of money by selling off the cars illegally with their gains being pumped into a variety of organised crime

José Orge from Spain’s organised crime fighting police division, UDYCO, told the 200 FENEVAL delegates that the car rental companies needed to co-operate more with the police to try to reduce the numbers of stolen vehicles. Orge added that the problem was greater in areas like the Alicante and Murcia regions where the criminals could easily pass themselves off as tourists hiring cars. In Alicante Province alone, around two thousand cars per year are not being returned at the end of the contracted hire period. Poor penalties for car thefts; the sophistication of the organised crime gangs; and Spain’s mixture of different courts and regions are all combining to

make the country a fertile breeding ground for car rental thieves. UDYCO is currently investigating one case which saw 200 vehicles shipped out of Spain all the way to Paraguay back in 2012. The most popular models eyed up for shipping out are the Seat León and Ibiza; the Dacia Logan and Duster, as well as Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles and the BMW X5 and X6. All that being said, FENEVAL, declared that the turnover for their members went up last year by 4.3% to 1.3 billion euro, with a 5% rise being forecast for 2015. They are also going to buy nearly 200 thousand new cars for their customers this year.

A cigarette butt may have caused a Tuesday afternoon blaze at a plastics recycling plant in Torre Pacheco which led to firemen working through the night, but most of the complex was destroyed. Ten fire engines and a helicopter were drafted in at one point as workers fought to

beat back the flames. There were initial concerns that the fire was only 200 metres from Torre Pacheco town centre, very close to the railway station and just a kilometre from the IFEPA trade fair centre. The smoke plumes could be seen several kilometres away.

DOLON DONE BY DOLON A Dolon is still Mayor of Torrevieja, but it's the Green Party leader, Jose Manuel Dolon (pictured), who replaced the Partido Popular Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, in last Saturday's council chamber vote in the city, with the same procedure happening in every Spanish municipality. After last month's elections, a coalition of six opposing parties brought to end 27 consecutive years of PP rule in Torrevieja, with part of the deal being that the socialist PSOE leader, Fanny Serrano, will become mayor in 2017. The new centrist Ciudadamos party voted for a change having rejected overtures from the PP to keep Eduardo Dolon in power, but they have decided to not to be part of the ruling coalition. The PP will run Orihuela in a minority under Emilio Bascunana, although opposi-

tion parties are in a position to make life difficult if they combine their votes against him. Elsewhere, PSOE nominees got the nod from the smaller parties to oust the PP from power, with Carlos Gonzalez becoming the new Elche mayor, and Gabriel

Echavarri taking the top job in Alicante. Elsewhere, Ciudadamos abstained in the voting for San Javier's Mayor, which means that the PP will continue to run the administration in a minority, under Jose Miguel Luengo Gallego, whilst contrary to some pre-

dictions, a deal to remove the PP from office in San Miguel de Salinas fell apart, which gives Angel Saez another four years in charge, albeit in a minority. The PP though saw Carmen Verdu lose office in Guardamar, with Jose Luis Saez of the PSOE getting minor party support which meant that Verdu’s fate was sealed. Despite some brinkmanship and rows at the start of last week, the PSOE leader, Ximo Puig will almost certainly be the new Valencian President, after getting an agreement with Monica Oltra of the Compromis party. The PP though are set to stay in office in the Murcia region, with Presidential Pedro Antonio Sanchez trying to do deal with Ciudadamos to keep control of the regional assembly in a set of votes next week. Nationally, Manuela

Carmena was sworn in as the Mayor of Madrid backed by the leftist Podemos party. The 71-year-old has swept two decades of PP rule in the capital to one side after making a deal with the PSOE last Friday. In Barcelona, antiausterity campaigner Ada Colau was sworn in, after spending years battling on behalf of homeowners evicted due to the financial crisis. She pushed out Xavier Trias, who led a centre-right coalition backing independence for the Catalonia region. She will earn a quarter of her predecessor’s salary and will give up other privileges which go with the job. With the general election looming at the end of the year, the PP Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, described deals between left-wing groups and the chief opposition PSOE as "eccentric and sectarian".

FINAL JOURNEY

The remains of some of the Spanish victims of the Germanwings aircrash were flown back to Barcelona airport last Monday. A Lufthansa cargo plane transported the coffins of 32 Spanish victims of flight 4U9525 more

than 11 weeks after the passenger plane crashed in the French Alps en route to Düsseldorf from Barcelona. Others were transferred to other airports such as Bilbao, Madrid and Valencia at the request of the families,

whilst some relatives have opted to have the remains of their family members cremated in France. Last week, a similar flight carried home German victims of the crash which was deliberately caused by copilot Andreas Lubitz.

A 50 year old man died of internal burns when he was served cleaning fluid instead of wine in a bar in Benicarló in the northern part of the Valencian region last Sunday. It appears the soapy fluid was stored in a wine bottle, and then accidently put in the fridge by accident. Emergency services rushed him to hospital where he later died. The Guardia Civil is investigating to see if anybody could

be held criminally responsible for manslaughter. The bar owner was arrest-

ed before later being released, pending further enquiries.

POOR VINTAGE

CABBY TRIAL

A taxi driver is on trial in an Elche court for sexually abusing a 14 year old British girl back in 2007. Prosecutors have called for an eight year jail stretch after the man forced the teenager to perform a sexual act after she and a 13 year old friend (also British) had no money to pay him the fare on a journey from Torrevieja to the Elche area. The younger child ran away and got out of the taxi at the end of the journey, but the 14 year old was locked in the car and forced to go into a field where she was allegedly sexually abused. She was then taken in the cab and dumped in a nearby area.

BEACH BOOST

Torrevieja's beaches and waters will be safer as of tomorrow (Saturday June 20th) as the annual team of lifeguards and first-aiders swing into action. Up to 75 lifeguards will be working during the July and September peak holiday

period, with the patrols running until September 20th. The service across the Orihuela Costa’s 11 beaches kicked in last Monday with up to 46 guards (pictured) providing 10 hour a day cover until September 25th.

BETTER PASEO

Erosion problems should be dramatically eased at Torre de la Horadada after the building of a new 370 metre breakwater to protect the Paseo Marítimo del Sardinero. The work from the Provincial Directorate of Coasts fol-

lows on storm damage over the winter, as well as complaints over a period of time from the local neighbourhood group that the battering of the sea waves has left the walkway vulnerable to collapse.

Big Blaze

A fire ripped through the front of the Marjal Real Estate company building in Guardamar last Tuesday afternoon, with six fire crews from Torrevieja, Almoradi, Orihuela, and Elche taking three hours to extinguish the blaze. Ten company employees escaped without injury with one theory being that the fire started from a blowtorch spark as work was being done on one of the property terraces.

BUSY TENDER

39 companies have applied to the Valencian Government in connection with a five million euro tender to rebuild the ailing

Príncipe de España school in Rojales. The education department says that they expected to announce the winning bid shortly.

PARK LIFE

Work on building a new park in the El Chaparral area of Torrevieja should be finished by the end of the year. A 40 thousand square metre area is being redeveloped by 48 members of the Mediterraneo employment workshop and Torrevieja

council say that construction is running to schedule. Children's play areas, skateboard facilities, and water fountains are just some of the features being incorporated into the project, which is reinvigorating a former piece of wasteland.

BLOOD PLEA

Spanish health authorities are desperate for more blood donors, with the system running up an annual deficit of 300 thousand litres per year. The shortfall is made up by supplies from America, with Spanish donor numbers falling by over 9% in the last year. According to the Spanish Blood Donor Federation (FEDSANG), the shortfall

imported makes up 50% of the amount of blood used in Spanish hospitals annually. To make up the balance, the number of donors needed in Spain would have to go up to four per 1,000 inhabitants, from its current 3.6 – but numbers have been declining constantly, dropping 7% between 2010 and the end of 2014.

CUT OFF

A 47 year old Santa Pola man who groomed a boy via phone and the internet by posing as a teenager, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. The alleged pervert sent the boy in Gran Canaria

sexually explicit matter via WhatsApp after the child refused to send him material of himself. The boy’s mother got wind of what was happening, and the Guardia have managed to track the man down.

Supermarket chain Mercadona is hiring four thousand extra workers for the busy summer season across its fifteen hundred stores in the country. They are being offered

contracts through till the end of September to supplement the company’s 74 thousand-strong workforce, with 60 new stores being opened this year alone.

85 people have been nabbed by the National Police over a social security fraud which allegedly syphoned off 800 thousand euro of public money via seven bogus companies. The gang, which was run by members of the same fami-

ly, originated from Morocco and operated across various parts of Spain, including the Alicante and Murcia regions, offering nonSpaniards the chance to get an employment contract along with social security and state aid.

SCAM SMASHED

Police have arrested a five-strong bird-napping gang that would steal the animals from homes in rural areas around Elche. The thieves went for a variety of feathered friends from parrots and parakeets,

through to pheasants, with the plan being to sell them on to interested customers. Besides the birds, the police discovered marijuana plants, plus a stolen mountain bike and a kayak in their various house raids.

SAX APPEAL

Two Spanish men who conned women into performing strip teases during bogus job interviews for nightclub dancers in the Alicante Province town of Sax have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. Officers rumbled something was amiss when work was being offered in a Sax night club via a social networking site. The ”interviews” took place via a webcam where the victims were asked to perform various routines and told to keep quiet about it or else the videos would be posted online for everybody

ADIOS MIGUEL

Spain gave its most-celebrated writer, Miguel de Cervantes, a formal burial last week nearly 400 years after his death, unveiling a funeral monument holding recently unearthed bone fragments that some believe are those of the author of ''Don Quixote.'' Outgoing Madrid Mayor, Ana Botella placed a laurel wreath at the foot of the monument in a Madrid convent in a ceremony that included military honours, since Cervantes also had

been a soldier for Spain. The bones were dug up this year by experts after a months-long search at the convent, where Cervantes was known to have been buried in 1616. Construction work over the centuries had made it difficult to figure out where his bones lay. In January, archaeologists said they found fragments of a casket bearing the initials M.C. and bones. They concluded it was the author, even without definitive proof.

Alicante-Elche airport continues to set new records with last month's passenger figures going over a million for the first time ever in May. 1.01 million people used the facilities at El Altet, a rise of just over 4% compared to the same month last year. The cumulative figure for 2015 so far has 3.6 million passengers travelling to and

from the airport, which is 3.8% more than 2014, and therefore set to break last year's record-breaking total of 10 million. British travellers accounted for just over 44% of all journeys. Meanwhile, just over 130 thousand passengers used San Javier airport, a slim rise of just under 1% on a year ago.

TO THE LETTER

Semana Santa parade organisers in Valencia City are a tough bunch. They've fined a woman 300 euro for wearing a short skirt during last Easter, whilst two others have been fined 60 euro each for having long slits up the sides of their skirts. The organising committee said that they were be fined for "failing to dress with decorum" during a religious procession. Other members were also fined for taking "selfies" as well as waving to people they

knew in the crowds or for getting out of step.

BENIDORM TO BOLTON

A baby born three months prematurely during his parents' holiday to Benidorm is experiencing Britiish life for the first time, having been flown by private jet last week. Karla Hornby was relaxing by the pool with her partner Jordan Jackson when her waters suddenly broke and she was rushed into hospital for an emergency caesarean section. The 29-year-old feared she would die in the procedure as her son Freddie was delivered 12 weeks early, weighing just 2lbs.

The parents faced a nervous wait to see if their son would have complications and concerned doctors told the family they would have to stay in Spain for at least three months while Freddie built up his strength. But the youngster surpassed all expectations and medics gave him the green light to travel home ahead of schedule. Now the family has finally arrived home to Bolton, flying back in a private plane with a special incubator - covered by their insurance. Freddie, who now weighs more than 4lbs,

will continue to recover in the Royal Bolton Hospital where he is receiving assisted feeds.

Spanish consumer prices fell again for their eleventh straight month in May, by 0.2% year-on-year, but if food and oil prices are taken out of the equation, inflation actually rose yearon-year by 0.5%. Price falls now appear to be near to working their way out of the system, with the slackening rate in line with forecasts. Spain began to emerge from a five-year recession in 2013, and this year growth is forecast to outstrip the EU average at over 3%. However the return of activity has yet to make much of a dent on

unemployment, which still stands at nearly 24%, and

double that for the youngest jobseekers.

bers (including his wife and his brother) are facing a total of over 100 years in jail. Their trial started this week, with prosecutors calling for Correas to get 12

years behind bars after his alleged involvement in the beating up of a man who was walking his dog in a park area of San Roque in Torrevieja back in July 2013. The victim had refused to give up his house keys and got seriously assaulted as a result. Guardia and National Police officers shot Correas twice in a raid at his Santomera home outside Murcia City the following month, with his lawyer arguing that excessive force had been used against her unarmed client who was with his child. The gang are accused of being involved in a series of violent assaults in the Murcia and Alicante regions.

A Salamanca motorist will never bite his fingernails behind the wheel again, as he’s been fined 80 euro for doing just that whilst driving! The police report cites the reason for the fine as being that the driver "was not maintaining the required freedom of movement" and for "driving while biting fingernails". It’s not the first such incident to befall drivers in the region of Castilla y Leon as last month a driver was fined for unwrapping a piece of chewing gum at the wheel.

A 22 year Frenchman has been caught whizzing at 235 kilometres per hour on the AP7 motorway near Corbera in Valencia Province with 200 thousand euro on him. Neither he nor his passengers were able to explain where they got the six-figure sum in cash found in a sports bag from, so the money was seized under Spain’s money-laundering law.

Little

HOT MEAT AND Smile POTATO AND A FEW PORKY PIES

DAVE SILVER

I WAS seated at the dining room table when Mrs S spotted me clipping my fingernails. She went ballistic. 'Don't do that here! It's disgusting!' she exclaimed ballistically. 'But I've opened my serviette to catch the flying bits,' I reasoned. 'You just have to be the centre of attention, don't you,' Mrs S hissed. 'Not true,' I lied, removing my socks in order to start on my toenails. 'I must say I agree with your dining partner,' commented the waiter who had approached to take our restaurant order. 'I think I'll have the steak,' I said. 'But please tell chef I want it burned to a crisp.' The waiter wrote down my order. 'One steak. Welldone,' he commented. 'Thank you very much,' I responded. 'I thought it was a good choice, too.' 'French fries?' he queried. 'No thanks,' I said. 'I'll have the chips. And a dollop of mushy peas, please. And to top it all off, might I have a mug of steaming hot tea.' I wondered why the waiter was still hovering. And then Mrs S whispered in my ear: 'What about me?' I grabbed her hand and stared lovingly into her eyes. 'I shall always adore you, my darling,' I cooed. Turning to the still-waiting waiter, I said: 'Women, eh? They need constant reassurance.' 'You haven't ordered a meal for ME!' she whispered again -- only this time a lot louder. 'Sorry,' I said, 'But I thought you'd already eaten before we came out.' I turned to the waiting waiter

again. 'What do you recommend for Mrs S?' I asked. 'For starters, a divorce,' he said dryly. All this happened one evening back in 1997. I can pinpoint the year because it was the last time Mrs S agreed to dine out with me. Which reminds me. The most dramatic meal I ever had was a meat and potato pie I purchased one Saturday night in 1962, long before fate dragged Mrs S, kicking and screaming, into my life. It had been a typical -- for me -- weekend shambles. After waiting two hours for my date not to turn up, I had walked wearily to the bus stop, pausing only to grab a bite from Mo's Mobile Snack Stall. I bit into the steaming pie

crust and released the scalding juice from its pastry prison. The hot liquid dribbled like lava down my sensitive adolescent chin. I let out a shriek and slumped to the pavement. Concerned passers-by milled around my collapsed form, someone dashed to the nearest phone box to call an ambulance, and an enterprising street urchin ran off with my pie. Fast-forward 35 years back to 1997 as I waited for my steak, chips and mushy peas . . . 'Why don't you nip out and phone home to check with the babysitter,' suggested Mrs S. 'I already did while you were powdering your pretty nose,' I said. 'Apparently, the little one woke up whim-

pering and whining but the babysitter was most patient and she managed to rock him back to sleep again.' 'I think we should go home,' said Mrs S. 'I won't be able to relax until I can see his little tail wagging with contentment.' 'Stop fussing,' I said. 'All animals miss their owners when the latter are out of the house -- apart from lizards and goldfish, I suppose. And maybe cats as well, although moggies are probably out of the house, too, when their owners are . . . er . . . out of the house, too.' 'Does your husband always waffle on like that?' asked the waiter who had stopped waiting but who had now returned to our table to take Mrs S's order.

Rewind 35 years back to 1962. My chin burn turned out to be a minor injury but, such was my emotional state, the casualty doctor had phoned my mother to come to the hospital. 'Is she here yet?' I asked, a bit trembly. 'Your mother's not coming,' said the doc. 'She said there was nowhere open this late to buy grapes and there was no point in arriving empty-handed.' Fast-forward to 1997 and Mrs S was offering the waiter an explanation. 'My husband likes to be the centre of attention because he had a somewhat lonely childhood. True, he grew up in the presence of a dog, a cat and a budgie, but he was the lowest in the pecking order.

'And his father wasn't around either during my husband's formative period. It took his dad several years to get home after the war. He explained that he'd missed the last troopship back to Blighty but who really knows if he was telling the truth.' 'So your husband acts daft for the attention,' observed the waiter. 'Oh, no,' said Mrs S. 'He's NOT acting.' It's truly horrible when people are ignoring you. I looked around and my worst fears were confirmed. Mrs S was deep in conversation with the waiter and the other diners were talking to each other. But nobody was bothering with ME. I legged it outside, rushed around the corner to Son of Mo's Mobile Snack Stall and breathlessly ordered a scalding hot meat and potato pie. 'Sorry, mate,' said Mo Junior. 'My father stopped selling exceedingly hot pies in 1962 after a customer collapsed on the pavement, writhing about and shrieking his head off. He was so loud that a crowd soon gathered. 'Dad said that the guy was probably merely trying to make himself the centre of attention but, even so, he couldn't risk any bad publicity.' So no very hot pies for me then. Fortunately, I'd brought along my Indian clubs. I juggled with them until I attracted a crowd. Then I bowed to my appreciative audience and dashed back to the restaurant to finish my meal and to order Mrs S a takeaway. Then we drove home to relieve the dogsitter.

KILLER RECAPTURED A Venezuelan man who murdered a British couple in Alcoy in 2002 has been arrested at Madrid airport after trying to flee the country. He was sentenced to 62 years behind bars with a fellow Venezuelan for the brutal slaying, but Jorge Real Sierra, now aged 65, failed to return to prison after being given a pass out for six days from Granada jail, and was arrested along with his daughter, who was flying in from Malaga. The prisoner (pictured with his victims) was found to be holding fake travel and identification

documents, having been arrested on an Alicante Provincial Court warrant. The couple, Anthony and Linda O'Malley, from Llangollen, north Wales, went missing in September 2002 after travelling to Alcoy to try to find a property. They were abducted by Jorge Real Sierra and his brotherin-law Juan Antonio Velazquez Gonzalez. Mr O'Malley, 42, and his wife, 55, answered an advert for a villa in Alcoy but they did not know that Real and Velazquez, who had placed the ad, were only renting

and were in no position to sell it. When they came to view the villa, they were kidnapped and held in the cellar, apparently monitored by their captors from a separate location via a webcam. The Venezuelans forced Mr O'Malley to take out 25,000 euro from his bank account and then went on a spending spree with the couple's credit cards. Anthony O'Malley was strangled and his wife died from shock. Their bodies were buried together beneath the basement where they had been held.

A puppy called Buddy, who was trapped at Barcelona airport and faced being put down, has been saved and will spend 21 days under quarantine before being returned to his owner with permission to stay in Spain. The pup had been kept in a sealed crate over the weekend after authorities insisted he be sent back to New York or be put down because it wasn’t possible to detect his microchip. Authorities issued the reprieve after a huge social media campaign that saw 86,745 people sign a petition on Change.org in just three days. To the huge relief of his owner Irene Sola, Buddy was transferred to a kennel for 21 days of quarantine on Monday. The victory came after lawyers from animal welfare charity PACMA took on the case. The little white fluffy dog arrived in a sealed crate with a pet passport, veterinary certificate and all his

paperwork in order. But animal customs staff at the airport were unable to read his microchip with the reader they had available and so wouldn’t authorize his entry into Spain. Instead his owner, Irene Sola was told that if she couldn't provide a machine that could detect the microchip, then Buddy would be returned to America or put to sleep. Sola spent the weekend taking as many different microchip readers as she could get her hands on to the airport but by Monday

morning 12 different machines had been used without any success. A team of lawyers pressurised authorities citing European Union regulations over the care for live animals at airports and demanded that the fourmonth-old dog be handed into the care of a trusted veterinarian. "Finally and thanks to the large support through social networks the administration agreed to quarantine the animal," said PACMA lawyer Irene Gonzalvo.

A formal decree was published last Friday which revoked the use of the title by Cristina. Cristina, 49, stands accused of taking part in tax evasion by her husband, the

former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin. A judge ruled in December that she must stand trial on two counts of accessory to tax fraud, making her the first member of the Spanish royal family to be sent to the dock. No date has been set for her trial. Meanwhile popularity ratings for King Felipe are on the march, one year into his reign, stemming big falls registered under his scan-

dal-hit father. An opinion poll in last Monday’s El Mundo newspaper indicates 75.1 percent of Spaniards think Felipe is a good king for Spain, while 19 percent think the opposite and 5.9 percent did not know or did not answer. Another question showed 61.5 percent backed the monarchy, compared with 49.9 percent in a similar poll in January 2014, before King Juan Carlos abdicated in Felipe's favour.

PETER SINGH

I was sent several messages a fortnight ago about a couple of German Shepherds, a Brother and Sister, who were in a perrera in Northern Spain. All the messages said that the two siblings were in urgent need of rescue and rehabilitation. I was sent a photo of the girl and my heart just sank, as she sat in her kennel, with her head against the wall, too frightened to look anywhere else. All I was told, is that they were found on the streets, but I do not believe that for one minute, as these two are so fearful, that if they were on the street, you would have no chance of getting even close to them. My colleague, Jose, made the 14 hour round trip to collect them for me and when they arrived at our house in the early hours of Thursday morning, I can honestly say that I have never seen fear and terror like it in all of my life. When they decided to leave their transportation, they both made a dash for the new large kennels we had prepared for them and both bolted into a corner, shaking and looking down at the floor. It was a heartbreaking site and one I will never forget. They stayed in that position for five days in total and only moved when they needed to go to the toilet. By the Monday, I knew that if you

THE STORY OF BONNIE AND CLYDE

left them to it, they would stay in their kennels for ever, so we decided to coax them out of there and into a covered patio area. This is where they have stayed for the last 24 hours, but at least now they can see life around them and see the other dogs. They still try and hide themselves away, as they try and dig there faces into the ground, but we are in this for the long haul and will never

give up on them. This will be the longest and most complex rehabilitation we have ever carried out, but we are determined that they will learn that not all people are bad. After studying them for some time, I am now absolutely sure what their abuse consisted of, but I will not write it on these pages, as people will find it very upsetting and also very disturbing. All I will

say is that I am astounded at the level of dark abuse that some people will put on a dog in this world. There are some terribly wicked humans out there and why they do what they do, I simply have no idea, but it is becoming more and more common. Our good friend, Wendy Mitchell, named the brother and sister, Bonnie and Clyde and I hope that they now realise that they

are free from the devastating abuse they suffered. On another note about German Shepherds, you may remember I wrote a few weeks ago, about a beautiful Shepherd who was thrown out of his home for being too old and such was his loyalty that he just sat outside the gate for days waiting to be let back in, before he was picked up and rescued. He went to a new home, but the

other dog did not accept him, so sadly he is on his way back us this weekend. To say we have a full house would be an understatement, but we love what we do with a passion. I was watching the England match on TV on Sunday but missed every single goal, because I could not stop playing and looking at the eight kittens and three puppies who were sharing the couch with me! Like I say every day, watching these tiny little balls of fluff is better than any TV show! www.thedogyouneed.com is a registered charity, where we rehabilitate the most severely abused animals. Life EASY LEARNING SPANISH Spanish 177

JEANETTE ERATH

Hello, and welcome back to another week of Spanish, I hope you´ve had a great week and are ready to continue the learning process. As you know this is a long road that will lead you to speaking fluent Spanish however, also remember that you need to be listening to Spanish as well in order to be able to understand when you are having a conversation with a Spanish person. This week is an important lesson, they are all useful of course, however revision is the best way to know if you are improving or feeling a bit stagnant. I´m going to give you various revision exercises and I hope you find them interesting and helpful in your learning journey. First of all I want you to put the verb in the present perfect in the following sentences, don´t forget the auxiliary! And then try and translate the sentences into English: Esta año ………………… ……. a la playa (ir), se lo …… ………………… a él (yo/regalar), ¿ya …………… ……………… a la maestra

(tú/ ver), ella siempre ……… …………………….buenos amigos (tener), no ………… ………………….. aún (nosotros/almorzar), no …… ………………………… la lección (yo/estudiar), …………… ………………. mucho dinero (nosotros/gastar), Nunca …… …………. a nadie (yo/ decir), El hombre …………………… …. gasolina en el coche (poner), por los últimos cinco años ………………………… …. la tienda todos los días (yo/ abrir), ¿cuántos años … ……………………… el español? (tú / enseñar), ya … ………………. las cartas (nosotros/ escribir). Now chose the correct preposition from the following to put in the gaps, they may be used more than once: por en de a con No me acordé …….. la fecha de su cumpleaños, ¡que raro! Tardaron mucho …

Cuento ...... mis amigos, Now I want you to fill in the gaps with the correct pronoun, some are used with prepositions and some aren´t, be sure to choose the correct pronoun: She lives with us. (feminine) – Ella vive con …… ….. Do you have something for me? ¿tienes algo para … ....? She always takes an umbrella with her – ella siempre lleva un paraguas …… ..… María is with me. María está ..…….…, does she study with you? (familiar) - ¿Estudia …..……...? You´re not with me – No estás …………, he´s with her – Él está con ……… ..,María is behind him – María está detrás de …..., She lives with you. (familiar) - Ella vive ……..…, She´s

to the right of me – Ella está a la de derecha de …...., Everyone has a pen except you. (familiar) – Cada uno tiene un bolígrafo salvo …… .., I have a gift for you (familiar) – tengo un regalo para … …., Between you and me, this food is horrible. (familiar) – entre ……... y yo, esta comida es horrible, Who lives with them? (masculine) - ¿Quién vive con ……...? John doesn't live near you-all. (masc. fam.) Juan no vive cerca de ……… .., I work with you – trabajo … …...., Everyone is sleeping except me – todos duermen salvo …...., . He always takes the key with him. Él siempre lleva la llave … …...., Everyone eats except

you. (familiar) – todos comen menos …….., the letter is from her – la carta es de …… ……. I´m now going to give some revision work on something that the majority of people speaking Spanish as a foreign language find most difficult: the subjunctive. Choose the correct verb either in the subjunctive or indicative tense, if you are already getting lost then this is too advanced for you, revise the subjunctive and then try.

14. Aunque (llueve, llueva) mañana nos marcharemos. I hope you have managed to work your brain cells this week, I´ll have the answers for you next week. Take it easy and have a great week.

About

Life TONY MAYES

I can’t make up my mind which group are lower on my list: - either the greedy wretches who run payday loan companies bleeding the poor, or ambulance chasers. The second variety rightly came in for harsh criticism when one law firm used the Alton Towers rollercoaster crash to drum up business. Broad Yorkshire Law, based in Sheffield, sent out a tweet (yes damn social media again!)soon after four people were seriously injured and others were trapped for hours on the theme park's Smiler ride. It read: "Been injured in a roller coaster crash?! We're experts in Personal Injury!! #Smiler #AltonTowers" The tweet was posted as people were still being freed from the stricken carriage on the ride. The tweet was removed but not before angry people branded the firm ambulance chasers and vultures. The firm later explained the message was sent out by a junior member of staff and was a severe error of judgement. This may have been fair enough, if it wasn´t for past messages it has sent out. After the birth of Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, they posted a message saying: 'So if the royals fall out over the new #princess' new name, let us know, we are experts in #divorce... #RoyalBaby' And after UKIP leader Nigel Farage failed to win his seat in the General Election, they wrote: 'Nigel Farage has just phoned asking if we can make a claim as someone has stolen his seat. We directed him to @DFS hope they can help!’ These so-called law firms really need to clean up their act. Either they suffer from severe errors of judgement, or there are simply far too many lawyers - or perhaps a combination of both,

LEGAL SHARKS NEED CULLING

methinks. Perhaps my list of hate should also include estate agents. How about this for a scam? How much do you think it costs to change a light fitting? A landlord was charged £550 plus £66 VAT. And now it could prove to be the costliest light replacement in history, because the agent could be hit with a legal bill of £42million! That´s because the landlord challenged the bill and discovered the estate agent had sub-contracted the work out and the original bill was far less. The agent added 33% more to the bill as commission and matters were made worse because the sub-contractor had also paid the agent commission to get the work in the first place. It's unearthed a massive legal can of worms which could lead to thousands of landlords suing the estate agent and total claims totalling £42million could be on the cards. Brilliant - I hope it sends the company into bankruptcy and a way is found to make the individual agents personally responsi-

ble for the debt. As I have written before, you only have to set such an example once. Most people coming to Spain love to visit the local market - it´s been a tradition of the local way of life for generations. But a weekly market doesn't always work well when there are hundreds of people living nearby, or if there are places which people need to go to. Take the Orihuela Costa, which is increasingly built up, with more and more folk moving in, and parking spaces becoming scarcer. Firstly there´s the main Saturday market in Playa Flamenca, where there´s a conflict between the market and local residents. People are trapped, carless, from 6.00am on Saturdays until 6.00pm at night, by the stalls and then by the police preventing locals using the street until the road cleaners have done their work. Police have been fining motorists trying to use the road before barriers are removed and residents are far from happy, prevented from entering or

leaving their homes for 12 hours. Another conflict point is Cabo Roig, where the local doctor´s surgery is located, with car parking at a premium, but on a Thursday market day, it's chaos. And to make it worse, right outside the surgery and along the road new cycling lane has been built, and police have had a field day booking motorists stopping there. On every other day of the week, a rough car park next to the surgery is open for parking, although the road camber means motorists using it end up scraping their chassis getting over the pavement! But on Thursdays, the car park is closed so that traders can use it, so the chaos is worse. I can see the conflict between the love of markets and needs of modern day living with car transport getting worse. Local councils and police have suddenly realised there´s a way to make money in flashing the parking tickets (a disease Britain has known all about for the past 20 years). My advice to the new Orihuela council -

beware, don´t be too greedy, as motorists will vote with their wheels and boycott the area if parking gets too difficult. There really ought to be a concerted effort to find a suitable place for a viable market in the centre of the Costa. How about land north of The Boulevard, either side of the road leading to Los Dolces? Meanwhile, it’s back to Britain for some parking nonsense, where a family was fined £100 for pulling into the wrong airport car park for six minutes! They stopped in a private car park at Exeter Airport before catching a flight, but they drove away as soon as they were told it was the wrong car park, but never-the-less they were fined. Premier Park of Exeter which operates the "Park 2 Fly" car park said it has to deter people abusing the site. The family went to see the security guard in the car park to enquire if they were in the correct car park, and were told they were in the wrong place and were given directions to the correct car park. They pulled out of the car park six minutes after arriving. The parking charges for Park 2 Fly are £15 per day, so this works out 0.0625 for the six minutes they were in the car park and a £100 fine was totally unjustified. The family are appealing the fine. I hope they succeed and the airport authorities take a long look at the fairness of this money making racket. Here’s a classic example of an uncaring English council. There´s a children´s specially dedicated cemetery at Bristol and the council decided it would extend its area. Instead of first putting up a proper protective screen, workmen started to dig rows of graves for future stillbirths or baby deaths. So

parents and relatives visiting their children´s graves were met with the awful site of empty grave plots. Following complaints, a screen was put up, but it quickly was blown down. The council said it was decided to dig a number of graves rather than have the bereaved constantly seeing the cemetery dug up. Just how can council staff and councillors be so insensitive? Do you remember the days when you went to your local Post Office, got a form and obtained a driving licence (provided you were qualified, of course) and you got a sticky bit of paper stuck into your driving licence book? Nowadays things are a whole lot more complicated, with even problems when you want to rent a car abroad. You have to go on line and get a code from the DVLA website, which is all part of the new procedure in place after the scrapping of the paper part of the driving licence in the UK. All very well, except, of course, the bl**dy website doesn't work properly. On the first day of operation people were hit with problems such as the website was not loading, or it had crashed midway through the process leaving users unable to get their code. The problem with wretched new technology is that it is always inflicted on a long suffering public before all the teething troubles are ironed out, and if everyone is now supposed to use it for everything, it should be provided in everyone's home for free. And just as importantly, if new rules are introduced, then for heaven's sake introduce a standard system right across Europe. What on earth is the point of the EU if every country still goes its own sweet way on everything?

Bags and Boots for All Out with the old and in with the new was the message from the spring fashion shows in Paris, Milan and London this year and now is a great time to pick up a bargain or two as we´re about to head straight into sales season in Spain. Boots and bags of every variety were key to the trends for the summer, with minimalist designs and startling prints, with shapes and colours to meet every taste. Simone Rocha who offered up a slick, bubblegum pink brogue, and Phoebe Philo successfully updated the bucket bag for Celine. Then we got more adventurous in footwear with Riccardo Tisci‘s over-theknee bondage boots for Givenchy and Rick Owens with his futuristic, monster mouth platforms. Talking of boots, remember back in 2013 when superstarlet Rihanna was seen in rather stunning Tom Ford Knee-High Boots? Okay, maybe not for everyday wear, but they have got to be a timeless classic,

right? As we sprinkle on a bit of campness to get you twinkling along with your accessories, how about the stunning Dolce & Gabbana‘s Barbie box purse, although probably not good if you´re shopping for toys, or Moschino‘s rather odd / funky looking boombox handbag. Maybe they are out of the price range of most of us with more sense than cash, at least they lay the foundation for us to hit the shops running to look chic on the beach this summer, and on the subject of the beach and summer, our pick of the best beach bags has to be Wightsails Sailcloth Beach Handbag, a snip at just 40 quid, made from recycled sail cloth, giving us a genuine nautical feel to our beach trip. Finally, for those who would rather spend money on things other than bags, most major supermarkets sell a decent sized shopping bag for about 50 cents, perfect for just about any use, except maybe the catwalk.

PANTONE FASHION COLOR REPORT 2015 This season, cooler and softer colour choices This season there is a move toward the cooler and softer side of the colour spectrum. An eclectic, ethereal mix of understated brights, pale pastels and nature-like neutrals take center stage as designers draw from daydreams of simpler times.

Remembrances of retro delights, folkloric and floral art, and the magical worlds of tropical landscapes restore a sense of wellbeing as we head into warmer months. “Many feel compelled to be connected around the clock because we are afraid

we’ll miss something important. There is a growing movement to step out and create ‘quiet zones’ to disconnect from technology and unwind, giving ourselves time to stop and be still. Color choices follow the same minimalistic, ‘en plein air’ theme, taking a

cue from nature rather than being reinvented or mechanically manipulated. Soft, cool hues blend with subtle warm tones to create a soothing escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.” Leatrice Eiseman Pantone Colour Institute®

A Treat for you Both It´s father´s day in the UK this weekend, a time to treat the dads in our lives. The weekend also sees midsummer, when the nights start drawing in! Oh, what a depressing thought, dark nights before we´ve even got through the summer, but the cold is something to look forward to isn´t it? A time for us to get closer to the ones we love… If only for the warmth of course! But what about father´s day, a traditional time to treat

the dads, yes, but treat them to what? One of the oddest things on offer in an Alicante department store the other year was a DVD box set, nothing unusual about that, until we tell you that the title was Queer as Folk, about the lives, dramas, trials and tribulations of the lives of gay men in America. It´s a great box set by the way, but not your traditional gift for dads! But maybe that´s the key, maybe we should break from tradition and give a gift that

keeps on giving, a long term pleasure giver, maybe for both of you. Okay, enough of the teasing. Long dark nights, gifts for men, a gift that keeps on giving, we are talking about the guilty pleasures you can both share! Everything from briefs, to adult toys, role play and games and everything in between, are all available all year round, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Where do you find them, on the inter-

net of course, and we have a website that will offer everything to tantalise and tease. Don´t believe us, have a look for yourself. Visit GuiltyPleasures365.com and you will see everything unfold

in front of you. It´s not for the faint hearted, but if the recent success of Fifty Shades of Grey is anything to go by, then there will be nothing there to shock you! The only thing you might

want to consider is keeping the gifts to yourself. Yes, it might be a father´s day treat, but this sort of playtime is not for the kids, it´s for you and him, to enjoy together, whatever your guilty pleasure.

The big film of the day is on ITV and comes from the young wizard Harry Potter. As Harry enters his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Death Eaters have descended on the country. At Hogwarts, it is time for the Triwizard Tournament, but in a bizarre twist of fate, Harry becomes the fourth contestant in the competition meant only for three. Harry must battle with a terrifying dragon, survive a gruelling underwater round, and then make it through an enchanted maze. But no-one could have known the terrifying ordeal that would await him at the finishing line. Did you know? While filming his scenes as Professor Dumbledore, Michael Gambon kept his cigarettes tucked into his socks. Meanwhile, cream teas, bunting, thatched cottages swathed in roses and quaint church spires all feature on Channel 4 as Penelope Keith takes to the road to explore our relationship with that most quintessential of British institutions, the village. In this first episode, Penelope is in East Anglia, attending a traditional village regatta on the Norfolk Broads and taking to the air over the village of Little Snoring. She learns to speak like a Norfolk native and ends her journey at a village fete, where she is witness to a unique village performance - the formation wheelbarrow display by the Red Sparrows!

Make sure you read our main feature for more about this. Sheridan Smith famously played Cilla Black in the recent biopic about the popular singer´s life, and in another chapter from Cilla´s history revised for the modern generation, Holly Willoughby returns for the first of a new series of Surprise Surprise on ITV, as springs more surprises on some of the nation's most deserving and inspirational people. Global music icon Lionel Richie says hello to his biggest fan in the surprise of a lifetime, two lads receive the perfect day for any rugby fan, and a tale of wartime romance leads to an emotional family reunion that crosses the Atlantic. Over on Channel 4 there are more surprises promised, this time of the garden shed variety (yes, really), as the series that made stars of the nation's sheds is back for 2015 - bigger and better. George Clarke and the Amazing Spaces team travel the length and breadth of the British Isles, visiting the extraordinary sheds vying to be crowned Shed of the Year 2015. This year, the series is bigger with two new categories - joining the existing hotly-contested groups including Best Eco Shed, Tardis Shed and Best Pub Shed.

Coronation Street - The Christening In Monday´s Emmerdale, which continues from Friday by the way, after having received the photo text message revealing his kiss with Chrissie there’s palpable tension at the dinner table. Once alone in the kitchen, Cain throws Robert against the wall, demanding he talks, Robert explains he wants Cain to find Adam and Victoria in return for his silence over the photo, leaving Cain caught. Chrissie walks in and panics when Robert shows her the photos playing the role of hurt husband. Will Robert forgive Chrissie and if he does, is it all an act? Meanwhile, in Coronation Street, whilst Anna, Tim and Gary prepare for the christening, Faye is dreading the prospect of the day ahead. When Tim witnesses Faye snapping at baby Miley he’s left feeling concerned by her behaviour. In part 2, Tim calls off the christening, for the sake of Faye and Miley’s well being. Whilst he’s breaking the news to the congregation, Josie and Grieg approach Tim, suggesting it may be better if Miley were to live with him. Tim meets with the couple to discuss the possibility and agrees to talk to Anna and Faye about the suggestion. Soap Bubble In Emmerdale on Tuesday, a worried Moira tells James that Adam and Victoria may have done a runner whilst Cain knows he needs to act fast. Robert continues to blackmail Cain with the photographs of him kissing Chrissie leaving Cain ready to explode. As worry grows Moira asks Finn if he’s heard from Victoria. Finn suggests not but Cain’s instincts tell him Finn knows more than he’s letting on. Cain simmers when he finds Robert arguing with Moira. Will Cain out manoeuvre Robert? Rakesh plans a celebration; glad to think Kirin is back on the right track. Later, Priya asks for Kirin’s help in finding a missing computer file she has deleted accidentally. Kirin directs her to the correct folder much to her relief, but Priya makes a shocking discovery, the faked DNA results. A horrified Priya is quick to confront Rakesh, unable to believe what he has done, making it clear exactly where she stands. In Eastenders, Kush's 30th birthday has arrived, but he remains adamant that he can't celebrate due to Ramadan. Despite this, his friends ignore his wishes by dragging him over to The Vic. Shabnam is disappointed when Tamwar tells her what Kush is up to, but she is relieved when he stays loyal by returning home. In the end, Shabnam gives Kush her blessing to celebrate with his friends after all - but things become awkward when he ends up handcuffed to the Square's railings in his underwear.

A riled Robert fills Chrissie in on Victoria and Adam’s plan, determined to stop the nuptials and sets off with purpose to the address Cain gave him. At the registry office, Aaron arrives and encourages a worried Adam not to worry and to just focus on himself and Victoria. Victoria arrives at her wedding accompanied by Finn. It’s all smiles for the intimate wedding party and the service begins. But the besotted pair and their two guests are soon distracted by a noise outside. Will an uninvited arrival halt proceedings? Now, the secret bit… Robert reaches for a door handle… Is it the registry office… Is he intent on stopping the wedding? When the door opens Adam and Victoria are surprised to see Moira, Andy and Diane. In Eastenders, Stacey confronts Nancy again and protests that there is nothing going on between her and Kush. At the same time, Shabnam arrives at the community centre for today's Iftar drive but is disappointed to find that it's been trashed. She confronts three young girls about the incident. Sunday sees Sheridan Smith return to our screens, fresh from the accolades of playing her late friend, cancer patient Lisa Lynch, in BBC1's The C-Word, and the plaudits for her performance as Cilla Black, this time we see her take on an altogether new role. Leeds police constable Jo Gillespie is devastated when her husband, undercover officer Ryan, is killed. As she battles to stay strong for the benefit of daughter Melly, Jo is urged by her bosses to leave it to her fellow officers to find the killer. But when the murder enquiry starts to uncover some dangerous secrets about Ryan, Jo's faith in the police family of which she has been a part for so long is severely tested. We caught up with Sheridan to get the lowdown on this new character and her emotional journey. Q: What appealed to you about Black Work? “The writer Matt Charman

Your Weekly round-up of the TV news

got in touch with me, explained the premise of Black Work and why he wanted me to play Jo Gillespie. She has two worlds: Her family life and then her police family. Jo is strong and tough but goes through so much turmoil and mental torment. It was different to anything I’ve done before.” Q: The funeral scenes are very moving? “We were in a beautiful cathedral and holding Honor’s hand as Melly and having to walk behind the officers carrying the coffin was really powerful to film. There’s a speech at the funeral about the risks police officers take every day. I have so much respect for people who do these jobs. I’m simply playing a role and acting it out. They have to do it for real. Q: You filmed Black Work close to your family roots in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire? “Yes. We filmed in Leeds, Lincolnshire and all around my home area. I was able to

Murder on Corrie?

use my own accent. Black Work started just after I had played Lisa Lynch in The C Word and my hair hadn’t really grown back that much at all at that stage. We spoke about maybe wearing wigs but then we thought, ‘Why not just go with how I am at the minute?’ So Jo has short black hair, which also fits in with her being a police officer. Q: Have you played a police officer before? “No, I’ve never played a police officer. I played a

character called Janey Giles in The Bill but she was on the wrong side of the law. “When you’re playing someone like Cilla or Mrs Biggs you get all these research packs. I watched all the interviews of Cilla from the 1960s and so on. Of course with this you can’t just go into a police station and say, ‘Can I watch what you’re doing?’ But I got enough information to know where to pitch my performance as far as what it’s like being in the force.

You´ve seen him on The Bill enforcing the law, but now actor Andrew Paul might just find himself on the wrong side of justice, as his dark side is about to be revealed on Coronation Street. Andrew is currently playing Liz McDonald´s new love interest, Dan Jones, although it didn´t take he long to get over Tony, did it? Anyway, all seems to be going well until former prostitute Leanne, played by Jane Danson, recognizes Dan as an ex kerb crawling client. It the split from Nick and then the troubles

with Peter, the fire in Victoria Court and the death of her fiancée Kal aren´t enough for Leanne to cope with (we´ll forgot the tram crash, fire in her flat and many other traumatic moments in her fictional life, Leanne is about to find herself held hostage in her flat. We know that Leanne gets a violent beating in front of Simon, even more violent than being hit with the TV remote control, but the end result could be, maybe, perhaps... MURDER! We will have to wait and see when the scenes air next month.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI I can’t believe that ten weeks has flown by and we’ve witnessed the end of the current run of Game of Thrones. I’m surprised that there isn’t enough screaming from the rooftops about the sheer depth and quality of the show, though the fact it is shown only on pay channels in the UK and Spain, does prevent a large jointviewing experience from taking place. The last three episodes were terrific with some glorious set pieces of big movie standard which had me gasping in admiration. It may be an American funded and produced show, but it’s one heck of an endorsement for British talent on and off screen. April 2016, for the start of series

FANTASTIC THRONES

six and the solving of a cliffhanger (or is it?)featuring Kit Harington’s character of Jon Snow, can’t come quick enough. Reviving old TV shows often ends in tears as the new product rarely matches up to the original and has the effect of trashing our memories as to what went before. Fortunately and perhaps surprisingly, we’ve had a couple of examples in the last few days where the contrary has happened. Channel Four’s one-off revival last week of TFI Friday was great fun and showed us what a different and far sharper (and to be honest…more sober) presenter Chris Evans is these days. The old clips from the

mid-nineties showed a fatter and out of control Evans, whilst the TFI revival had him giving a master class in live TV presentation and frankly looking like a twenty year old as opposed to somebody in their fifties. From the guests to the live bands and the bits of stupid-

ity, it worked splendidly and showed us how badly we need such a show as opposed to the stream of duds that are paraded out on a Saturday evening that fail to entertain. The word is very much out that Channel Four want it back as a series, helped by viewing figures

that beat all comers. Three essential riders for me though: - Evans must present it(much more difficult now as he’s the new lead presenter of Top Gear along with his One Show duties); it must be live; and keep it at 9.00pm where you can get away with some naughtiness. An even older revival has seen The Clangers back this week for some new adventures for the first time in forty-plus years and the great news is that it’s perfect. No CGI re-working here which has seen the likes of Andy Pandy and The Flowerpot Men lose all their identity and charm whilst being upgraded to high tech. Traditional stop-motion ani-

mation is used and it’s delightful for all ages, plus Michael Palin’s excellent narration picking up the mantle from co-creator, Oliver Postgate. The only gripe is that the BBC are running it only on their toddler channel, CBeebies, which is a shame as viewers of absolutely all ages would enjoy it on say BBC1. Thumbs up from me for the new X Factor judges, Rita Ora (who shone brightly on the last season of The Voice: - Kylie or Jessie surely set to return) and her best mate, the entertaining Radio 1 Breakfast Show host, Nick Grimshaw. It should be fun and there’s no doubt that Simon Cowell is going for a younger audience.

Issues

Osteoporosis is now a common bone disease seen especially in women. Osteoporosis is diagnosed using a technology known as DEXA scan, however DEXA scans has been criticized by several groups of experts as a useless and highly inaccurate scan that must be discarded. The results it produces varies from one machine to another, and depends on who’s

doing the interpretation. The scan interprets big bones as healthy bones, and this means slimmer women are typically diagnosed with osteoporosis. A more reliable way to check bone health is to measure the rate of inflammation of the bones and joints. Adding to the problem of inaccurate diagnosis of osteoporosis, is the destructive nature of the drugs used in its treatment. Understanding how

the bones keep healthy will throw more light into the harm caused by these medications. To stay healthy, the bones have to continually produce new bone tissue and dissolve old bone tissue. The drugs typically prescribed for treating osteoporosis such as alendronic acid (Fosamax), prevents the break-down of old bone tissue. By doing so, old bone tissue continues to pile up, making the bones

thick but also very fragile and easily prone to fracture. The scans carried out at MedB clinic show that women who have been on medications for osteoporosis for a few years usually have inflammation in most of the systems of the body

as well as problems with the liver and kidneys. Bone and joint diseases very typically arise from a deficiency of a mineral in the body called MSM (Methyl Sulphony Methane). MSM is a necessary requirement for the production of collagen,

which is needed to support our joints, bones, skin, hair and nails. Taking MSM supplements is a safer and more effective way to keep the joints healthy. FOR A FULL BODY DIAGNOSTIC SCAN CALL: 965071745, 966189074

The Mini Range for Gentlemen The MINI range gives driving excitement and British charm To drive a MINI is to make a statement. To wear MINI is now equally so. On the occasion of the 88th Pitti Uomo, MINI got together with six talented young Italians and the heads behind the Pitti Uomo gentleman’s fashion fair to design the first MINI Capsule Collection. The upshots are six premium accessories that combine Italian craftsmanship with creative and innovative details – inspired by the new MINI Clubman. Tradition meets cutting edge. They’re young, they love unconventionality and they are masters of their art: in a symbiotic partnership the creative personalities behind the brands SuperDuper, TYG Spectacles, Alberto Premi and Pijama, along with perfumer Paola Bottai and the Proraso team with illustrator Pietro Nicolaucich, joined forces with MINI to design and create the “MINI Gentleman’s Collection inspired by MINI Clubman”. What they came up with are cool fashion classics that encounter a modern design idiom. The designers were inspired by Italy’s pulsating fashion scene, traditional bespoke men’s tailoring and handcraftsmanship – mastered in equal measure by all – and the new MINI Clubman that celebrates its world premiere in 2015. The six gentleman’s accessories comprise a hat, a pair of sunglasses, a pair of shoes, a bag, a fragrance and a shaving kit. SuperDuper: the gentleman’s hat. Its round form is classical, its materials are high-class: the gentleman’s hat is a creative jewel. It was handmade using premium-grade felt and traditional methods. At the 87th Pitti Uomo, for example, MINI and Pitti jointly awarded the most talented young designer accolade to Alberto Premi, who went on to present his innovative shoe collection in a Special MINI Edition at the Salone del Mobile in April 2015.

Stunning Classics on Sale

If you´re lucky enough to be in the UK this weekend, you might be able to grab yourself a classic bargain. Held in conjunction with the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club Annual Concours & Rally at Burghley House, Lincolnshire, on 20 June H&H will once again offer a fine selection of RollsRoyces, Bentleys and motor cars from other prestigious marques. This year, significant preWar entries include the 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Sedanca De Ville by Windovers, a well-known car in society circles of the time, and a 1923 RollsRoyce Silver Ghost carrying ingenious painted ‘wood-effect’ shooting brake coachwork from a car once owned by the future Edward VIII, one of the earliest ‘woodies’. Estimates: £70,000 - 90,000 for the former, £100,000 - 120,000 the latter. The Spanish title ‘Marquis de Portago’ is best known as the name of the 1950s playboy and racing driver Alfonso, who lost his life in the last-ever Mille Miglia. His father, Antonio

Cabeza de Vaca, from whom he inherited the title, was another keen motoring enthusiast and one-time owner of the 1931 RollsRoyce 20/25 Sports Saloon to be offered by H&H at Burghley House. The rakish two-tone fourdoor, an ex-Paris Salon car, past NEC Classic Motor Show champion and former RREC Class and Best in Show winner carries a price of £100,000 - £120,000. As war clouds gathered over Europe in the late1930s, Rolls-Royce was in the final stages of designing its new Bentley Mk V, an advanced car with independent front suspension (a first for the company) and a powerful, high-compression 4.25-litre engine. In the end, of the 35 proposed Mk Vs, 17 were reportedly completed before the outbreak of hostilities and just seven are thought to remain in existence today. H&H will offer a Park Ward-bodied Mk V Sports Saloon first sold to Jack Barclay in 1940 when it carried the registration ‘JB 1’. In marque specialist

Moving up to date, there can be few better ways to enjoy serious long-distance motoring four-up than in a four-door Rolls or Bentley Continental, the H J Mulliner-built ‘Flying Spur’. Saloon £150,000 - £180,000, could well be the most original and lowest mileage (believed 37,000 from new) example of this very rare car. Extras fitted from new include: air conditioning, a rev-counter, adjustable spot and fog lights, leather dash top and an interior/exterior thermometer. Finally, of the other entries in the 49-car catalogue, another highlight is the 1969 Bentley T-Series Mulliner Park Ward (‘MPW’) Drophead. Life JEANETTE ERATH

Now that July is knocking on the door and the weather is only going to get hotter, at least for the next few months, what are your plans? Are you one of the many who return to the UK at this time of year, as the stifling heat is just too much, or are you one of the majority that stay here and make the most of these balmy days and sultry nights. Are you eager to get out and about and make the most of everything this country has to offer or do you prefer to stay hidden inside, at least until the sun begins its descent and the temperature drops to a more comfortable climate. There are those of us who are still trying to lose weight and fit into our bikinis but it’s going to be too hot to go daytime running, let alone exercising in my regular spot under my home’s underbuild. I guess we have a few options, some more appealing than others but ultimately, the important thing is not to give up, and to believe in the mantra

that something is better than nothing. I´d love to be able to afford a gym membership at this time of year, as a nice air conditioned club with a personal trainer is what I really need right now. That isn´t an option for me, but it is one you could keep in mind. I have my own pool and although it´s not big enough to do lengths, it is perfect for aqua aerobics. I have seen many different exercises online that I am waiting to pluck up the courage to go in my pool and try out. The water is still a bit cold for more than my feet at the moment, although my son has been living in there recently which is great as it means he gets plenty of exercise and isn´t cooped up all day. So that is one option that we have, and even if you only have a communal pool, you can normally find some time of day when it´s not too busy and you can practise some moves. The biggest problem I find is remembering the routines

LIGHTEN THE LOAD as when I do my exercises I usually watch a video and just copy it or I have the different exercise moves written out, but if I only memorise a few at first and build up! I´m sure it´ll be fine. It´s of course important to remember to put on plenty of sun cream for days outside, including trips to the beach, which again open up a plethora of options for keeping fit. The sea is a great force which can be used to walk against as long as you take care, especially in this area which has been known to have some strong currents. But just taking a walk along the soft sand is good for toning those legs. You will feel the muscles working like never before and as you stroll along breathing in the fresh sea air, you will begin to feel like you are invincible. The joy of beach walks is that you can rest whenever you want to. Just sit down on the warm sand, close your eyes for a moment and breathe in the sound of the sea gently

touching the shore. Then when you´re ready, you can get back up and continue on your way. This is great for single people like me, or if your partner or friends are working because you will notice that there are many people on their own and you will not be looked at strangely simply for being alone. Once you´ve had your exercise for the day and

come home, showered and eaten, it´s time to hit the town. Preparing for a summer night out is different to winter nights and for me at least there is always a lot more to do, especially as we girls wear skirts, dresses or shorts for our nights out. The legs have to be groomed as well as arms and everything else. I like to paint my toenails and have nice looking feet,

something that isn´t necessary in winter! It was while I was getting ready for a night out not long ago that I realised the diet needed another kick start, as I was trying clothes on they seemed to have shrunk in the wash as I heaved and pulled them up. When I couldn´t do up a pair of shorts that I wore last summer, I knew that more work was needed if I´m not going to keep expanding. No offence to larger ladies out there, I know how hard it is to lose weight and a lot of you I´m sure are very happy with your size, however I am not. I´m not happy at all, so I know that it´s going to be down to me to find something that works and in the next month I´ll be working hard to get the weight off and get into shape. If any gym wants to offer me free personal training for a month feel free to get in touch! Have a great week, whatever you´re doing, and I´ll see you next week, hopefully a few pounds lighter!

Chargrilling Mexican-style Charring is the secret to authentic Mexican cooking

Food & Drink Eating fruit and vegetables can boost fertility

Desserts

Grilled Peaches 4 peaches, halved and pitted. 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter Directions 1. Set your grill to mediumlow heat 2. Brush both sides of the peach halves with butter 3. Once grill is heated up, set peaches on the grill until they are charred with grill marks Serving Makes 8 servings

Kid-Friendly Waffle Kabobs Ingredients 12 mini toaster waffles (3 sets of 4) 2 cups strawberries 1 cup blueberries 1 cup vanilla yogurt 12 wooden or bamboo skewers Directions Toast the waffles, then break each set into four. Thread one waffle, two strawberries and a few blueberries on each skewer. Place the yogurt in a small bowl. Serving Size: 12 skewers; 1 per serving

Mexicans love to char food, be that roasting chillies, tomatoes and garlic in dry frying pans (for fresh but robust table salsas), or toasting dried chillies and spices. In fact, it’s what gives Mexican food much of its distinctive taste. I feel a peculiar sense of pride that charring is all the rage over here, too, because I’m sure the trend stems from the huge interest in real Mexican cooking the world over. Viva Mexico! Grilled cauliflower with charred tomato chilli dressing. If there is one thing you cook this month, let this be it. It’s a fabulous side for grilled fish, or for barbecued chicken or pork chops, or just as it is in a meze spread. Serves four. 125g puy lentils, 1 bay leaf, 2 garlic cloves, smashed. 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, Salt and freshly ground black pepper, 2 cauliflowers, leaves removed, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 handful parsley leaves,

roughly chopped. For the tomato dressing. 1 scotch bonnet chilli, 2 plum tomatoes, ½ clove garlic, peeled, 2 tbsp sherry vinegar. 1 pinch brown sugar, 130ml olive oil. Put the lentils in a saucepan with the bay leaf and garlic. Cover with water, bring to a simmer and cook gently for 25-30 minutes, until the lentils are just tender but still holding their shape. Drain, and reserve two tablespoons of the cooking liquid; discard the rest, and the garlic and bay. Stir the oil into the lentils and season to taste. Meanwhile, put your oldest, most knackered heavy-based pan on a high heat. Once hot, add the chilli and tomatoes for the dressing, and dry-roast until blackened all over, about 10 minutes: the blacker they are, the more flavour will come through in the dressing. Put the charred tomatoes in a blender. Cut open the chilli

lengthways and scrape away the seeds and membrane – try not to touch either, or you will have very spicy fingers for several hours. Add the chilli and garlic to the blender, and blitz to a thick puree. Add the vinegar and sugar, season generously and, with the motor running, add the oil in a slow, steady stream until the dressing is emulsified. Season to taste – it can take quite a bit of salt. Put a griddle pan on a high heat. Cut the cauliflower vertically into 1cm-wide slabs. Rub the slices in oil and season. Grill in batches for eight to 10 minutes, turning halfway, until lightly toasted and tender in the middle; adjust the flame if they seem to be burning. Transfer to a warm place and repeat with the remaining cauliflower. Lay the cauli on plates, spoon over the lentils and drizzle on dressing. Scatter on the parsley and serve.

Eating fruit and vegetables could boost the chance of having a baby but men are much "lazier" than women at taking such advice, researchers have warned. A major study of more than 1,100 men and women found that those with healthy diets were much more likely to conceive. Regular consumption of fruit, vegetables and pulses was associated with far higher levels of fertility. Non-smokers and those who avoided or limited alcohol were also more likely to conceive. • Could switching to organic fruit and veg double sperm count? • Vegetarians have much lower sperm counts

• Too much coffee damages fertility for men The findings, presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology's annual meeting in Lisbon, showed that overall, women were more likely than men to have a healthy diet. In findings described as "striking and statistically significant" the research found 55 per cent of fertile men consumed fruit five times a week compared with 73 per cent of fertile women. Men are more reluctant to make lifestyle changes such as limiting their alcohol intake or eating more fruit and vegetables, yet experts say such moves could boost their fertility

Why crash diets don't work

Follow these simple steps to improve your diet gradually for Summer Don’t be conned by fake healthy products There are so many freefrom, paleo, vegan, low-fat etc products that con you into buying them on the pretence that they are really healthy, but lots of them are full of sugar and refined ingredients. Stick to natural snacks instead and always read the label so you know what you are putting into your body. Home-made trail mix, granola bars, dates, nut butter, energy bites, hummus and crackers are terrific options.

As the weather gets warmer I find that people become increasingly conscious of what they are eating. It’s easy to panic at the thought of being on the beach in a bikini, and as a result go on a crash diet. The thing is, crash dieting doesn’t work; you may temporarily shift a few pounds but in the long run you are unlikely see many permanent changes. Instead, the best way to make sustainable changes to your body is to alter your lifestyle over time, so that eating well and nourishing your body naturally becomes a part of your life. Easier said than done, I know, so I wanted to share a few tips and tricks with you that I hope will help. Don't beat yourself up for eating bad foods, instead try to gradually change your habits Skip the guilt Eating well shouldn’t feel like a chore. It needs to be enjoyable, as otherwise it will last only a few days, so you have to find a balance

that works for you. If eating healthily just 20 to 30 per cent of the time feels achievable, then start there and gradually try to increase the percentage, but don’t beat yourself up for eating a burger or pizza while you do this. We are not looking for a quick fix here. It’s important to create a positive relationship between body, mind and food, and this is unlikely to happen if you are too hard on yourself. Focus on counting goodness, not calories When people are dieting it’s easy to become obsessed with calories, but not all calories are created equal, so it’s healthier for our bodies and minds to focus on how much goodness we are eating instead. Don’t give yourself tiny portions or skip meals; instead eat proper meals of nourishing foods that leave you feeling satisfied. There is nothing worse than feeling hungry – you are more likely to quit the healthy eating and reach for

a chocolate bar. Make healthy decisions at breakfast If you start the day with nourishing food you are more likely to make healthy choices later, as you will feel good physically and mentally. Squeezing in a little exercise before work helps to support this mentality too. I like whizzing up a smoothie in the morning as it’s so quick and you can take it on the go as you run to work or the gym. Swap out sugar and refined products Try to make easy swaps in your favourite meals to give them a healthy twist. Change white rice for brown rice or quinoa; white pasta for brown rice pasta or courgetti; cereal for oats and porridge; white sugar for honey or dates; chocolate for raw cacao; and white flour for buckwheat flour or brown rice flour. Easy changes, but they should help you feel your best without feeling deprived.

UNFAIR ON EDUARDO I’m not a political animal, but as a La Siesta resident of six years, I have to say that I’m sorry that Eduardo Dolon is no longer Torrevieja Mayor. Your paper and others have reported the good work he’s done and it seems crazy to me that his party came top in the vote, but has been removed by an alliance of convenience featuring a hotchpotch of self-interested politicians that will end up fighting each other once the honeymoon period is over. Eric Jacobs La Siesta, Torrevieja.

CAMERAS OVER LIBERTY Having read about last week’s assault on a man in Los Montesinos, I have to say that I went through a similar experience myself a couple of years ago in Rojales, and was treated very well by both the Local Police and Guardia Civil. The problem here, as they told me, is the lack of CCTV and resources to deal with such attacks. At least the UK has it right over CCTV despite what some civil liberty whingers think

HIS OWN FAULT Graham Morris As a Scottish lady, I was really upset to read Tony Mayes article last week practically blaming the SNP for Charles Kennedy’s death. I have never read so much rubbish. The SNP are a party the same as Labour, the Greens and the Lib Dems, and every single one of them use the media in ways that have been disgusting. Please do not point the finger at one party, they are all the same. Also Mr Kennedy was an alcoholic and that is what he died of, so please do not make excuses for him as it is people like Mr Mayes that have allowed this gentleman to carry on his drinking by blaming other things. Believe me I know as I lived with an alcoholic for many a year and like Mr Kennedy he was a very nice man but sadly he died through alcohol at age 50. Patricia Wands EDITOR: - Tony’s columns are meant to be straight-talking and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Tony made it quite clear that Mr.Kennedy brought a lot of the problems on himself by his past drinking, but emphasised a nasty personal element brought to the election campaign against him by the SNP. That’s a matter of record as were similar tactics used against other figures like the ex-Labour leader in Scotland, Jim Murphy.

HELP APPRECIATED I’m writing to say thank you to everybody at Help at Home Mar Menor for all the great effort they’ve put in to help me live more comfortably. The voluntary work they do is amazing, along with a willing cheerful disposition and a desire to be as helpful as possible. The ladies that help me out have changed my life, and I appreciate it so much that I plan to make a donation in my will. I never realised the kind of service you provide which is a life saver to someone in my position. You are all angels in disguise. Thank you all. Richard Robinson Los Narejos

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Mary had installed Avast and it was asking her ADVICE: Al was having problems connecting his Sony camcorder to his new laptop awkward questions about her Windows Live Mail

Q

Dear Richard, I have just downloaded Avast security system, after which I opened up my Gmail account. A message appeared from Avast stating … “Avast has detected a secure connection from your mail program (process wlmail.exe) to the IMAP server 173.194.67.109 (gmail.com) This type of connection cannot be checked for viruses. Please disable SSL/TLS in your mail client so that the Mail Scanner can scan your mail. The mail scanner will provide the SSL/TLS security itself”. On the Windows Live email page I went into Accounts / Properties / Advanced: there are two options there and I do not know which one to remove the tick from. Am I in the correct section and what do I have to do please? Your advice would be appreciated. Mary

Hi Richard, I have had a Sony camcorder model DCR-HC24E for about 3 years. Last year I bought a HP laptop modelG72. When I connect the camcorder to laptop with a USB I am unable to transfer my videos. I have downloaded Sony update drivers but I get a message either NO DEVICE FOUND or CONNECT WITH I-LINK CABLE I do not have a i-link cable (is this a firewire?) and there is no input socket on the laptop for one. I have tried on windows movie maker, Sony movies and a couple of other sites but had no joy. Please can help you me. Thanks Al

A

Hi. Hoping you can help me I have a Toshiba Laptop with Bluetooth I cannot get it to recognise my phone or if it does my phone doesn't recognise the computer I have tried with Dongle that says it works with Vista plus another one that includes a Disc, but I just cannot get Photos from my Phones to the Computer. Hoping you can help. Thanks in anticipation. Regards Ray

Q

Hi Mary, your antivirus is telling you that it cannot scan your emails for virus’s because they are being received in an encrypted form, its asking that you set up those accounts within its software so that it can act as a “middleman” and receive your emails, check them and then send them onto your email client (Windows Live Mail), you can do this by using the options in Avast below… RealTimeShields > MailShield > Expert settings > SSL accounts …however bear in mind that this can be quite a complex task and want to book an appointment for me to come and have a look at it for you if you struggle.

FIXED: James wanted to know how to recover his Terra.es password

Q A

Hi Al, I’m afraid you are going to struggle with this one, your camera is quite old (in technology terms) and the port that you really need (firewire or IEEE 1394 to give it its other name) is not standard on your laptop. If you have an expansion slot on your laptop then you should be able to purchase a card to give you this functionality (but I would need to see your laptop to confirm whether this can be done – perhaps drop it down to the Moncayo market where we have a stand every Saturday?) There are no drivers (software written by Sony) for your specific camera for Windows 7, but if we can get the camera connected using firewire then we should be able to use Windows Movie Maker to get the data from your camera and onto your laptop.

A

ADVICE: Ray was having trouble getting the pictures from his BlueTooth enabled mobile phone.

Q A

Hi Ray, it “sounds” like you are missing the software that is specific to your phone? I.e. Nokia PC Suite for a Nokia phone? Have you “paired” your phone and your “blutoothed” PC already? If you have then do a search on your phones manufacturers website for your phone’s computer software and you should be home and dry.

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternately why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

Hi Richard, can you help with a problem? How can I find out my terra.es password Thanks, James. Hi James, in order to recover your Terra email password you need to go here…

https://registro.terra.es/modificaciones/ModPub/olvPassword/PRCOlvidoPassword.jsp …and complete the form, they will take you through a process to recover your password. Update: Bingo! It worked thanks.

About

Golf IVIE DAVIES

Many golf clubs allow relief from tarmac roads and other hard paths, but not all. So should a tarmac road ever be an integral part of the course in the modern era? Pro’s play off Granny Clark's Wynd on the Old Course at St. Andrews but somebody like David Howell in our picture can afford to replace his clubs! There is a number of annoying golf rules that seem to give us a particularly bad deal. But the Rules of Golf’s real ‘two of spades’ is undoubtedly the tarmac, or other distinctly hard-surfaced road or pathway, that for some unfathomable reason the committee, in its infinite wisdom, has deemed an integral part of the course. In other words, if you’re on it, you either play it or take a penalty. It could be argued that this is both blatantly unfair and practically irresponsible in an era where a decent full set of sticks can set you back as much as a nice secondhand family saloon. Who would feel it fair if, to park your precious motor, you were required by the laws of the road to either first scrape your front wing

A Weekly look at the Golf scene

golfdavies@gmail.com

TARMAC RULE NEEDS LAYING DOWN Setting Standards

on a nearby wall or pay a hefty fine. But that’s exactly what golf’s outdated integral road rule asks you to do – damage your five iron or sand wedge, perhaps irreparably, or take a penalty drop and hand your opponent the advantage. Nowhere is this more prevalent than on the Old Course at St Andrews. Knock it through the back of the already devilishly difficult 17th – not hard to do as anyone who’s ever played there

will readily testify – and not only do you now face an almost impossible chip up and over a four foot bank onto a downslope, but it’s highly likely you’ll also find yourself having to play it from a rock-hard pathway or road. No wonder the hole is renowned for humiliating cricket scores and fraught tempers. Walk to the 18th tee and it’s a similar story – misclub, or misjudge your drive, especially into the wind, and the sparks will be flying as you attempt to pick a clean midiron off the neatly tarmacked Granny Clark’s Wynd that crosses the fairway at 240 yards. Even if you do knock

it on from here, you’ll be heading straight back to your club pro to get the loft and lie checked, and those irritating scratches and scrapes ground out of your costly seven iron as much as possible. But it’ll never be the same again. Maybe in golf’s earlier, more primitive days, people weren’t overly fussed about the appearance of their golf gear. But in our 21st century world of high-tech and expensive golf equipment, the majority of players most definitely are. So perhaps those more primitive days are exactly where the integral road rule now belongs?

TITTER ON THE TEE Two old friends were just about to tee off at the first hole of their local golf course when a guy carrying a golf bag called out to them, "Do you mind if I join you? My partner didn't show up." "Sure," they said, "You're welcome." So they started playing and enjoyed the game and the company of the newcomer. Part way around the course, one of the friends asked the newcomer, “So, what do you do for a living?" "I'm an assassin, a hit man". "You're joking!” "No, I'm not," he said, reaching into his golf bag, and pulling out a beautiful sniper's rifle with a large telescopic sight. "Here are my tools." "That's a beautiful telescopic sight,"; "Can I take a look? I think I might be able to see my house from here." So he picked up the rifle and looked through the sight in the direction of his house. "Yeah, I can see my house all right and see right in the window." "I can see my wife in the bedroom. I can see she's naked!! Wait a minute, that's my neighbour in there with her..... He's naked, too!!!" He turned to the hit man, "How much do you charge for a hit?" "I'll do a flat rate, for you, one thousand Euro every time I pull the trigger." "Can you do two for me now?" "First, shoot my wife; she's always been trappy, so shoot her in the mouth." "Then the neighbour, so just shoot his doo dah off to teach him a lesson." The hit man took the rifle and took aim, standing perfectly still for a few minutes. "Are you going to do it or not?" said the friend impatiently. "Just be patient," said the hit man calmly, "If I'm very careful, I think I can save you a grand here......"

I know I have been down this path before, but etiquette is an integral part of the lovely game, so here I go again! The golf teaching professional should teach and set an example of the proper etiquette on the golf course. In the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews rulebook, the section on etiquette is only a few pages. But, conduct on the golf course is much more than just two pages in a rulebook. Golf instructors, should never assume that a student already knows the proper etiquette on the golf course. Often, simple etiquette issues like pace of play, where to stand, or how to repair a pitch mark or rake a bunker are often overlooked. The professional should know and play by the rules. Frequently, they are and will be asked to answer a rules question. The key is to have knowledge of how to use the rulebook. It is not necessary to memorise all of the Rules of Golf. However, the golf instructor should be able to navigate and find answers in the rulebook. They should encourage indeed insist students follow the rules and etiquette. In the last few years, it would appear that there has been a

lowering of standard in regard to etiquette and the rules. For example, for many golfers, “winter rules” or “preferred lies” are becoming more common even here in Spain. Yet there are no such things as preferred lies in this country, so check with your local Caddy Master. The pace of play has also become considerably slower. There are many factors that contribute to this such as long courses built with great distance between greens and tees; slow golfers; and too many people on the course, etc. As a golf instructor, they should be a role model and can influence golfers’ pace of play habits. If they set the standard for students and they will notice and emulate. Golf Instructors/teachers, should teach the rules, etiquette, and tradition. There should be a nine hole playing lesson to include rules and etiquette, also featuring the way they arrive at the course as well as how to conduct themselves on it and in the clubhouse. This shows that they are a true professional who conducts themselves as such. The rules, etiquette, and tradition are what make’s golf such a great game.

QUESTION

A player's ball lies in casual water in a bunker. He cannot drop the ball in the bunker at a spot not nearer the hole that affords total relief from the casual water. There is an area affording complete relief from the condition, but that spot is nearer the hole. Which of the following is correct? (a) He may drop the ball in the position that affords total relief, even though that spot is nearer the hole. (b) He may drop the ball in the bunker as near as possible to where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole that affords maximum available relief from the casual water. (c) As there is nowhere in the bunker that affords complete relief and is not nearer the hole, the player is allowed to drop the ball outside thebunker, without penalty. (a) No. The ball now lies out of bounds and the player must proceed

ANSWER under stroke and distance - Rule 27-1, Rule 26-1 & Decision 26-1/7 (b) He may drop the ball in the bunker as near as possible to where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole that affords maximum available relief from the casual water - Rule 25-1.

YOUNG COBRAS

The junior members of the Costa Cobras rugby club recently rubbed shoulders with the San Javier Squalos at a special joint training session to give the new players a broader experi-

ence with the help of a wellestablished club. It was a session that was thoroughly enjoyed by both sets of youngsters, and now all eyes are on the Cobras seniors as they get ready to take

part in their first set of competitive matches in the Formentera del Segura 7’s tournament on Saturday June 27th. The action gets going at 10.00am at the Polideportivo.

Meanwhile the Cobras have started training on Guardamar beach on a Tuesday evening from 7.00pm with everybody welcome to join in. Training still takes place on a Monday

and Wednesday from 6.00pm for the juniors, and from 8.00pm for the seniors at the Daya Vieja sports ground. For anybody interested in playing for the club, there’s a

meeting this evening (Friday June 19th) at the Bridge Bar in Rojales, with all ages, genders and nationalities guaranteed a friendly greeting. For more details call Dutch on 692 767 242.

SUMMER SPRUCE UP TIME The players maybe having their summer break but they are still working hard behind the scenes at CD Torrevieja. With the coaching team confirmed for next season, attention has turned to the stadium for different reasons. Built in the 1970's, not much has changed at the Vicente Garcia stadium which is just opposite Sports City. With the last coat of paint being applied nearly a decade ago, club director Chris Darwen and his Business and Community Manager, Barrie Crawford are appealing to the local community to support them in their efforts to freshen the ground up.

JACK’S COSTA BREAK

Tri-athlete Jack Hindle has arrived for a Costa Blanca break after becoming Britain's under 20s National Triathlon Champion this week, writes ANDREW ATKINSON. "I am really happy to be the National U20 standard distance champion," Jack said, ahead of boarding a flight to Alicante-Elche airport. Lancashire star Jack is

visiting his granddad John Hindle, who lives in Los Montesinos, for a summer break, before returning to the UK on July 4th. Jack, a member of the Blackburn Harriers, competed in the Deva Triathlon at Chester. In the standard distance 1500m swim, Jack returned at time of 19:09; in the 40km Bike race clocked 1:02:30, and in the 10km

run returned at time of 36:57, finishing in a total time of 2:02:30. He took first place in the age group 1718 - and first in the U20s National Triathlon Championships. And Jack, who finished 20th overall - out of 1100 competitors said: "Thanks to all the lads that I train with - and the help and support they give. Also a spe-

cial mention to Brian Fogarty, Paul Guinan and George S Davies for the huge guidance - plus my mum and dad for everything!" And Jack's granddad, John Hindle, who resides on the La Herrada urbanisation in Los Montesinos, said: "I am 'chuffed to punch! All his hard work is paying off now."

"Nobody can deny that the Vicente Garcia is a beautiful place to watch and play football. I've watched a lot of games across the world and not many beat being here on a Sunday evening as the sun sets," says Chris. "Sadly, the ground itself is looking a little tired and we are looking to get some hands on deck this summer to give it a makeover!" With that in mind the club are staging a Painting Party on Saturday 18th July. “We are asking for two things really”, added Barrie Crawford. Firstly, if you cannot make it, donate a pot of paint. Just that gesture will show us that the

club means something to the locals. Better still, join us on the 18th, bring the paint and a roller and spend the day with us making the ground look great for the players next season!" Club Vice-President Jefferson Scott has offered to pay for drinks aplenty for the workforce on the day and local businessman Sean Bell will be providing free food for the volunteers. The club are appealing for paint donations, white or blue, and asking for people to be at the ground at 10.00am on Saturday July 18th. All you need to bring is a roller and tray, a great attitude and, again, some paint!

The kick-offs for La Liga's televised Saturday afternoon matches will be pushed back to meet the demands of the UK television audience. Two years ago, British viewers missed the first quarter hour of Barcelona against Real Madrid because of antiquated FA rules that do not allow any football to be shown on UK television from 2.45pm until 5.15pm. This is based on the premise that people will somehow stay at home to watch a live game as opposed to venturing out to watch their local side. From next season though, La Liga's traditional 6.00pm kick-off time will change to

THE TIMES ARE CHANGING

6.15pm to enable those matches to be shown in full on UK television. Javier Tebas, the president of the Spanish league, told radio station Cope of the change. Asked by the presenters if the change would mean there would be no "big games" at 6.15pm, he replied that was not true. Two Sunday kick-off times will also be changing. The 5pm start will be moved to 4.30pm and the 9.00pm match will be played at 8.30pm. There will continue to be matches on Saturdays at 4.00pm, 8.00pm and 10.00pm, and on Sundays at noon and 7.00pm. Tebas said that Friday

NEYMAR BOOST

The Barcelona president who has ended up in court over the club's signing of Neymar is ready to throw even more money at him to keep the 23-year-old happy at the Nou Camp. The Brazilian captain will be handed a new deal keeping him at the club until 2020 with a buy-out clause rising to €250million if Josep Maria Bartomeu, who stood down from the presidency last week so that the club's electoral process could begin, wins the July 18th elections. Bartomeu was vice-presi-

dent when Barcelona signed Neymar in 2013 and then succeeded Sandro Rosell who stood down over the tax evasion charges that followed the transfer. Bartomeu has been called to stand trial over an alleged €13m in taxes the Spanish treasury claims should have been paid on the transfer. But while the legal battle rumbles on, Bartomeu has already agreed a two-year extension to Neymar’s original contract that runs until 2018 and for his buy-out clause to match the one placed on Lionel Messi.

and Monday games would continue to be played at 9pm, a time that has not gone down to well in Spain as it means that many schoolchildren will miss the matches. Tebas also defended the unpopular decision of introducing a Sunday midday game by saying it was to appeal to the Asian markets. The number of kick-off times has proved confusing and unpopular and is cited as one of the reasons La Liga attendances dropped considerably in the 2014-15 season. On average, stadiums were 64% full, well behind the English Premier League's 90%.

The Spanish league is investigating this season's final-day match between Real Betis and Sporting Gijón, both of whom have been promoted to La Liga. The league's president, Javier Tebas, said the game was "being looked over" together with another in the second division that day, involving Girona and Lugo. Tebas told the Spanish newspaper AS, that "there is no concrete evidence" of wrongdoing but that the league keeps an eye on "any game where there could be rumours. In this case there have been rumours but there haven’t been any irregularities in betting offices. In any case the only thing we are doing at this point is studying the matches."

Real Madrid kept fans waiting at the start of the week as they slowly gave a step-by-step sneak preview of their new kit for the coming

FIX QUIZ

Betis went into the final match on June 7th having won the league but Sporting Gijón(pictured celebrating) who were third with 79 points, and the Catalan team Girona, who were second with 81 points, were battling to finish second and secure automatic promotion. Betis lost 3-0 at home to Sporting and Girona conceded a last-minute equaliser against the Galician side Lugo, who had nothing at stake, meaning that Sporting finished in second place and Girona went into the play-offs. The Spanish league is also looking into comments by Deportivo La Coruña's defender Alberto Lopo after a 2-2 draw with Barcelona on the final day of the league season on May 23rd.

Lopo said he asked Barcelona's Xavi to "relax a bit" because "a draw would be good for both sides", the

Catalan club having won the league and Deportivo needing to avoid defeat to be certain of avoiding relegation.

eventually pieced together, in the form of an over-sized jigsaw for beginners, to reveal the 2015-16 design. Players including Cristiano

Ronaldo and Karim Benzema model the shirts on the club's website, although the choice of having Iker Casillas at the forefront of the campaign may prove illadvised following reports the veteran keeper is on his way out of the Bernabeu, to be replaced by Manchester United’s David de Gea. Only the club badge and Fly Emirates logo detach from the whiter than white design, although the kit will be accompanied by a grey and green away alternative and a third strip, which is believed to be royal blue after pictures were leaked on the internet.

JOHN McGREGOR

JACK THE LAD!

I always said he was good - and that Arsenal should hang on to him… Actually, I didn’t, I slagged off Jack

goal scoring record of 49 for England is incidentally now in danger. Not from inconsistent and injury-prone

the hosts off with a classy team winner. England now look invincible - well, in the group stages anyway -

Wilshere recently for being immature, a trouble maker and said Arsenal should get rid. Well, the Gunners’ midfielder certainly made me eat my words on Friday night with a stunning display for England, if not lately for Arsene’s Army. Self-styled Spurs-slagger Wilshere scored two great goals, the second of which is rather generously being lauded into the all-time list of England great strikes. That ‘feat’ puts Smokin’ Jack right up there in the cannonball stakes with national heroes like Bobby Charlton, whose long-held

Wilshere, but ‘wor Bobby’s Man United pretender to the throne Wayne Rooney. The England captain moved ominously onto 48 with England’s third and finallywinning goal, putting the Red Devils hero now equal with the great Gary Lineker. If you’re English, the second half against Slovenia was excellent stuff and you had to feel sorry for the home underdogs. They went a goal ahead, then from being 2 – 1 down to Wilshere’s wonderful whizzers came back to equalise with ten minutes left - only to see Rooney finish

where six wins in six games tell their own story. Adam Lallana also had a good game whereas the two conceded by England will give Roy Hodgson some head scratching, both in central defence and full back areas. Here, as usual was the amazing paradox that all England managers strangely practice, of playing experienced club footballers out of position for their country. Why was J o r d a n Henderson, now postG e r r a r d

Liverpool’s anchor-man and captain in midfield playing at right back? Haven’t we got any of them? Is it the name that breeds crazy behaviour? After Jack Wilshere’s public foulmouthed outbursts following the Cup Final cost him £40,000 and a severe FA reprimand (and his Wengerinfuriating smoking stunts), we now have Aston Villa’s precocious starlet Jack Grealish photographed flat out on his back paralytic on holiday in Tenerife. This incident comes hard on the heels of the latest young brats’ trick (see Raheem Sterling) of taking laughing gas, when Grealish was reprimanded in April by his unimpressed boss Tim Sherwood. At the time it was reported that the Villa midfielder was reminded of his position and role as a public figure by his new manager. So it would appear that that rollicking fell on the same stony ground Grealish was pictured lying on: stoned… Anyone remember back when Mourinho-led Chelsea

won the Prem by eight points, I think, was it 2005/6? Then in the close season he went out and bought Andriy Shevchenko for a whopping £30m, and it didn’t work out. The Russian didn’t perform and Chelsea lost the Prem as Man United won it – and Jose went the following season following a barney with the Russian Rouble Ruler. What the Sam Kydd’s is Jose Falcaoing about now, buying the Columbian striker after being such a flop at Old Trafford? Surely there’s a better gamble to take to support Costa & Co than Falcao? Barking? The crazy American-led circus at Sunderland has been given a year’s reprieve – if it lasts that long, with Ellis Short in control, he said cynically. Now the current hero Dick Advocaat has U-turned and said he will stay on at the Stadium of Light for another year. Phew-for-all, after the little Dutchman did a Gus Poyet (remember him?) and somehow kept the Black Cats up again this season. Advocaat now faces a long, hard season to improve on his ‘get out of jail’ feat. Can Sunderland survive this time out with an ageing team that took some savage hammerings last season - who can forget the embarrassing 8 -0 drubbing at Southampton? All the many eyes that regularly and loyally turn up in the North East will be expecting more this year – and not yet another relegation-haunted season. BLATTERING AND BLAZERING You know how new fashionable words have come along recently and then become everyday parlance? You know, like ‘chilling’ and ‘bling’ – not to mention

‘texting’, and e mailing? Well I think ‘Blattering’, or now even ‘Blazering’ will come to mean something soon. To ‘Blatter’ will be to preside over something amazingly corrupt while seemingly fireproof yourself – like fiddling while Rome burns. Now increasing in incredulity daily in today’s astonishing world football, to ‘Blazer’ will mean to work undercover for a corrupt organization, while all the time feeding back the facts to the Feds. Here we obviously haven’t heard anything like half the story that’s going to come out sooner or later. So far it involves one 70 year old Chuck Blazer, a burly, bearded, bent American who was working for FIFA between 1997 and 2013. Sounding suspiciously like a plot from a Yank TV series, Chuck-the cheat turned supergrass in 2011, working with the FBI. This led to the arrest last month in Zurich by US prosecutors of 14 FIFA officials on charges of money laundering, racketeering and fraud over 24 years involving millions of dollars. Apparently, Blazer even had the 2012 Olympic meetings bugged! For the average footballfollowing fanatic layman like me, it’s virtually impossible at this stage to blithely accept that there was no skulduggery involved in the 2018 Russia securement of the World Cup - and even more doubt involving the unlikely choice of Qatar in 2022. Now where’s all this going to end? It will be a surprise, to me anyway if the World Cup is held in three years’ time without some nasty stuff being Chucked around – or should that be Blazered out?

ILICITANOS BATTLE Elche’s fight against administrative relegation from the Primera Division continues, with President Juan Anguix saying that he’s cleared 3.7 million euros of the club’s debt, ahead of Elche’s appearance before Spain’s sports arbitration court.

VIVE LA FRANCE! You probably haven’t even had your 2015 holiday yet – but at the risk of causing marital disharmony (Qui, moi?), and in line with my duty as a football correspondent, I need to give advance warning to any fellow football fans for an early ‘heads up’. There’s a big event happening NEXT year not far away in 2016. So, holiday-wise you could, erm, try France next year? Not far to go, eh? OK lads (and lasses), let’s fast forward almost exactly 12 months, from 10th June until 10th July 2016, and nip next door to La Belle France. There it’s the 2016 UEFA European Championship, commonly referred to as Euro 2016. Yes, it’s Europe’s smaller version of the World Cup, but this time it’s a little different to previous tournaments – why’s that then? Well, unlike before, there will be 24 teams, not 16. That provides six groups of four teams with the top two from each group going through to the knockout stages: that’s 12 so far. In the new format however, the four best third-ranked sides would also progress, leaving 16 teams going into the new round of a knockout stage. That’s ahead of the usual quarter-finals with eight teams, the semi-finals with four into the final pairing. Actually only eight teams will go out at the first group stages.] This new football feast format will provide an exciting 51 games over 31 days, compared with 31 games for the previous 16-team tournament. Actually

though, It’s not ideal because with thirdranked teams in the group stages advancing, it could provide situations where teams might know in advance what results they need to progress out of the group, lending to a lack of suspense for fans, or even the prospect of mutually beneficial collusion between teams: hmm… As hosts, France have automatically qualified for the finals, while the other 53 national teams are currently competing in a qualifying competition, running from September 2014 to November 2015, to secure the remaining 23 places. Among these teams are back-to-back defending champions Spain, and for the first time their immediate neighbours Gibraltar. In the bidding process France beat Italy and Turkey for the right to host the 2016 finals. The matches will be played in ten stadia in ten cities: Paris,Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, SaintDenis, St-Etienne, and Toulouse. It will be the third time that France has hosted the tournament, after the inaugural tournament in 1960 and the 1984 finals. The French team have won the European Championship twice: in 1984 and 2000. Last weekend, England and Wales moved closer to Euro 2016 qualification. Northern Ireland and Scotland earned valuable points, but the Republic of Ireland's hopes were hampered by a draw. Three nations from the British Isles have

not competed in the same tournament since England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland reached the 1990 World Cup finals. But after the latest round of qualifiers, there is a strong possibility that could happen in France next summer. While England are snugly safe, Wales, for once are cock-a-hoop after a hard 1 – 0 victory over World Cup quarter-finalists Belgium in Cardiff on Friday night. Gareth Bale was the Welsh hero scoring the winner, but it was heart-stirring ‘Welcome in the valleys’ stuff, Wales now leading their Group B by three points from star-studded Belgium. In contrast Scotland’s display in Group D on Saturday in the 1-1 draw against the Republic of Ireland was the Scots’ poorest for a while. Poland head the group ahead of Germany with Gordon Strachan’s team third two points ahead of Republic of Ireland. The increase to 24 teams was seen as a positive development for Martin O’Neill’s men, but it looks like they might not be involved next year. Having taken just one point from their two games against qualification rivals Scotland, their hopes of even third place look slim. However there is huge optimism in Group F where second-placed Northern Ireland can reach their first major finals since the 1986 World Cup. Michael O'Neill's men won their first three matches, and now must finish the job following Saturday's 0-0 draw against

Romania. There’s some other interesting countries currently battling it out to reach France next year. Surprisingly in Group A, the country with the smallest population, Iceland lead the huge Czech Republic and mighty Holland by two points and five respectively. In Group C, Slovakia are two ahead of former holders Spain, with Ukraine not out of it either. Austria strongly head group G leading Sweden by four points - and struggling Russia by eight – are Fabio Capello’s days numbered for the 2018 World Cup hosts? In Group H, Croatia lead Italy by two and Norway by four, and a Cristiano Ronaldo (one man band?) inspired Portugal lead group I by two from Denmark. The eventual winners will earn the right to participate in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Russia. If Germany or Russia win, however, the runner-up will qualify as Germany have already qualified due to winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and Russia have qualified as hosts. If both Germany and Russia reach the final, the qualifier will be drawn from the losing semi-finalists. In summary, both in time and geography, the French 2016 Euro finals are not far away from us - all. So if you’re currently football-stricken and have national pride at stake – get planning now. Psst…if you can’t wait until then, the new Premier League season kicks off August 8/9th!
