licante-Elche airport’s figures reached a recordbreaking best last month, whilst Costa Blanca’s hotels are expected to be 90 percent full this August in figures not seen since 2008 when the recession started to kick in. July’s passenger figures for the airport at El Altet were the best ever monthly returns since the facility opened in the mid-sixties, with one and a quarter million passengers passing through its doors, a four percent increase on the same month last year. Domestic flight travellers went up by just over six percent, with a three point six percent rise in international passengers. Over half a million travellers were to and from the United Kingdom, way ahead of the next foreign group which was 100 thousand

Norwegians, and 77 thousand Germans. Over three thousand flights operated to and from Britain, followed by thirteen hundred domestic flights within Spain. Almost six million people have used Alicante-Elche airport in 2015, a three point six percent rise on the figures for 2014, which in themselves were record breaking. Hotel occupancy figures

for the Costa Blanca based on the first two weeks of the month coupled with future bookings are projecting a three percent rise on July, which in turn saw a two percent rise on last year’s returns. 2015’s figures overall are so far showing a five percent hike on what was produced over the same period last year. Increased bookings are being account-

ed for by more domestic tourists and a boost in visitors from Scandinavia. Another consequence of the busier hotels is that more people are being employed within the sector in the Costa Blanca region, with local hotel federation HOSBEC saying that almost three and a half thousand new jobs have been created locally in the first six months of 2015.

rihuela’s coastal councillor, Sofia Alvarez, has had her full local powers and title restored, just a few weeks after the new council led by mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, had watered down her responsibilities. The move comes

on the back of recent meetings between the Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa and Sofia Alvarez who produced a list of 45 things that needed doing urgently in the area including calls for better cleaning

services and infrastructure developments. The ruling Partido Popular in turn pledged to deal with some of the problems as a matter of urgency, including the criticisms about the lack of cleanliness in the area. The coastal councillor’s responsibilities were reduced and centralised in Orihuela City after the new PP-led administration took control after May’s local elections, with Alvarez having the title of councillor for Beaches, Tourism, International residents and Urban transport. The council says that the aim of the

A police officers union has called for a National Police station to be set up in Torrevieja, saying that organised East European gangs are causing problems at the height of the summer season when the population quadruples. The Unión Federal de Policía (UFP) said urgent attention needed to be given to opening a National Police bureau to improve the safety of local residents, and because of the high number of tourists, which would help to give a safe and positive international image of the area. Last year, Spain’s security minister, Francisco

Martínez Vázquez, visited Torrevieja and rubbished any local suggestions that a National Police station for the city was on the cards,

A 71 year old man died whilst taking a swim at one of

Torrevieja’s beaches last Saturday afternoon, but addi-

tional information about the tragedy is extremely sketchy. The incident happened at around 2.15pm at Playa de Cura (pictured) with emergency services unable to save his life. 17 people have died in the Valencia region including the Costa Blanca since the start of the summer season on June 20th. In the whole of last summer, 33 people were drowned in the region. Meanwhile a 73 year old man was rushed to Elche General Hospital on Monday morning when he got into difficulty in the water at Santa Pola’s Playa Acequión. His condition was described as serious.

BROTHEL BUSTERS

A San Javier brothel was one of a number of places raided across the Murcia region by the National Police after a tip-off that females, often under-age, were being sexually exploited. 11 people were arrested after the police operation in San Javier, Murcia City, and Totana with a number of under-age women and ille-

gal immigrants being used by the criminal gang. The raids in San Javier and Murcia City were launched on the back of a call to Freephone number used to stop the trafficking of human beings, with the caller saying that she was underage and she had been exploited along with other people of a similar age.

MUDDLED JOURNEY

STAND OFF Tempers flared as Torrevieja market stall owners and illegal street vendors were involved in a scuffle last Friday igniting memories of street fights between the hawkers and the police two years ago. The local police were called in during last Friday's street market on Calle Maestro Casanovas with stall owners protesting that the street vendors were flogging items right in front of their pitches. Reports suggest that the regular local police patrol was not in the

area before being drafted in to diffuse the situation. Since action was taken two years, the hawkers tend to

concentrate on local beaches, or on bars and restaurants used by foreign tourists.

The Guardia Civil hit the jackpot on Monday as part of their week long anti-drink and drug driving campaign, as they pulled over a lorry driver who was six times over the legal alcohol limit, who was also well off his planned route for his final destination. The 51 year old Spaniard from Santomera was driving the 40 tonne truck on the RM-19 (known as the Mar Menor highway) when he hit two cars in the Balsicas area close to the turn off for Torre Pacheco.

No serious injuries were sustained and a breath test showed him to be way over the limit. What made matters worse for the driver was that he was meandering away from his final destination of Sangonera la Seca, which was only a few kilometres to the south of Murcia City from where he started his errant journey. Instead he was hauled off for a speedy hearing in front of a San Javier judge, whilst a replacement driver for his lorry was called in.

SNATCH OF THE DAY

Six Moroccans (five men and a woman) have been nabbed for selling counterfeit goods around San Pedro del Pinatar, including over three thousand fake football shirts which would have been sold for a total of 131 thousand euro. The Guardia Civil and Policia Local made their strike at last Monday’s market with the defendants, aged in their twenties and thirties, having to make an appearance in a San Javier court.

DRY DOCK

The Guardia Civil’s Rio Ladra boat (pictured) based in Alicante sailed south in just 20 minutes to the rescue of six people whose boat had started to sink off the coast of San Pedro del Pinatar last Friday. The 14 metre long leaking vessel was towed into San Pedro with the passengers all safely picked up by the Guardia.

NEVER TOO OLD

A 70 year old burglar has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Santa Pola and accused of a string of house robberies in the Valverde and Las Bayas areas of Elche. The unwelcome guest would break into homes at night irrespective of whether there would be anybody in them, and would try to steal whatever he could lay his hands on. The Spaniard is believed to be responsible for at least 11 robberies and was caught after the Guardia launched a surveillance operation in the man's target areas.

HEY BIG SPENDERS

A stronger British pound and Spain's improving economy has helped to contribute to some record-breaking tourist spending figures in the first half of 2015. Foreign visitors put over 28 blllion euro into Spain's coffers up to the end of June, which is over seven percent more compared to the same period last year. British visitors accounted for five point seven billion euros of that spend (up by almost ten percent over a year), followed by German tourists on four point four billion euro.

A Torrevieja-based website that allowed people to illegally download new and old movies in high definition quality has been shut down by the National Police. They’ve also arrested the 44 year old Spanish webmaster of the site, with flash drives and other computer accessories being seized from his Torrevieja home. A 37 year old Alcoy man, who held a priest at knifepoint last February, was found dead in the town last Tuesday morning just days after he had his five year jail sentence upheld by the Valencia Supreme Court. No further information was available as The Courier went to press. The man had appealed on the basis that he could not be facially identified as he was wearing a ski mask before putting a letter opener to the priest´s

throat, demanding money from the cleric who was praying at the time at San Jorge church in Alcoy. The priest gave the man a 20 euro note and called the police immediately after the thief had fled, giving them a description, which led them straight to the robber, who just happened to be carrying a letter opener and the 20 euro note. NEW BROOM NO HIGHWAY

A 230 signature petition to get changes to Almoradi’s street cleaning times has been accepted and approved by the local council. The petition was backed by the newlyformed Ciudadamos party which has three council-

lors on the authority. Changes will see cleaning starting an hour later in the morning at 8.00am, and also different routes will be used so that the same streets will not be cleaning every day at the same time.

TUESDAY LANDING

A boat with two Algerian immigrants on it was intercepted off the Mar Menor by the Guardia Civil on Tuesday afternoon. It landed just south of Cabo de Palos with six others jump-

ing into the water at different points landing at various local beaches. All eight male Algerians were rounded up by Wednesday morning, with all of them said to be in good health.

RING THAT BELL!

30 palm tree climbers will be converging on Elche tomorrow (Saturday) for the second international palm tree climbing competition, with the 'Espardenya d'Or' on offer for the eventual winner. There'll be different age categories and a speed section, with Polish, Romanian and Columbian climbers taking part, as

well as those from Spain (of which over half are from Elche). A ten and a half metre tall palm tree by the Altamira Palace will be used for the contest, and the quickest climber to get to the top and ring the bell will be declared the winner of the speed event. Last year’s victor scrambled up a 13 metre tree in an impressive 13 seconds!

GRAPES OF WRATH

It will be 2020 at the very earliest before work on the missing stretch of the RM-1 road in Murcia gets underway, according to a report in the La Verdad newspaper. 112 million euro is needed to finish the project with some money coming from a European Union development fund, but nearly 80 million euro needs to be found from elsewhere, and the Murcia government say

they haven’t got it, despite false dawns of construction the best part of two years ago. The money ran out suddenly during the recession in 2010, stopping the direct link between San Javier and the A7 Murcia to Alicante highway, with the road, nicknamed the “Highway of the Bed”, terminated abruptly before some lemon groves at Zeneta.

A married Spanish couple in their mid to late fifties have been charged with stealing some three tonnes of grapes from Alicante Province farms so that they could sell them off and pocket the cash. The Guardia Civil made the arrests as the couple operated around the vineyards

of Monforte del Cid, north of Elche, and would take the stolen fruit for sale in Alicante City. They’ve been charged with eleven counts of theft, with the man also having to answer to stealing grapes from a vineyard in 2014, when he was caught grape-handed by the land’s owner.

There may have been no Dastardly and Muttley to cause havoc, but the streets of Bigastro welcomed nine bizarre cars for the annual staging of the Wacky Races early last Sunday morning. The crazy

event is part of the annual San Joaquín fiestas, with fire engines, gangsters (perhaps The Ant Hill Mob?) and a giant carrot all going down the steep course and with minimal breaking power!

Local swimmers joined San Javier mayor, José Miguel Luengo and the Murcian Government's tourist minister, Juan Hernandez Albarracín, in raising the Q for quality blue flag at the

municipality’s Barnuevo beach last Friday. San Javier has five such flags on its beaches with the minister describing the municipality as being at the epicentre of the region's tourist industry.

CARROT POWER FLAGGED UP

CANCER SUPPORT

The Spanish cancer charity, AECC, had an excellent fund-raising and awareness weekend in San Javier, which raised nearly eight and a half thousand euro to help provide support for cancer victims and their relatives.

The annual August fundraiser was visited by San Javier Mayor, Visitación Martínez, at their Plaza de la Constitución collection point, which like at Lo Pagan, was generously supported by both local people and tourists.

ROAD BOOST

Over a quarter of a million euro has been given to the Pilar de la Horadada municipality for road improvements across the

area. Work will start this month or in early September thanks to the grant from Alicante Provincial Council.

EXTRA BIT

More improvements are to be carried out at Torre de la Horadada's Paseo del Sardinero in the autumn, in addition to the work that has been carried out this year. A 270 metre concrete barrier has been built at the Paseo,

with an extension of 80 metres being slated in for this October and November. The council say that the work should nullify any coastal erosion issues that have blighted the area for the last 15 years.

The first serious rainfall for a couple of months hit parts of the southern Costa Blanca late on Monday afternoon, with inland areas from Callosa de Segura through to Torrevieja being hit. Some temporary localised flooding occurred in the regular spots,

but the localised nature of the cloud bursts was such that most of the Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada stayed dry. Forecasters are saying there may be more localised rain at times over the weekend, especially on Sunday.

PAPER TRAIL

Torrevieja's new council has slammed the old Partido Popular administration for not keeping a proper rein on the municipality’s finances, after an audit failed to find formal contracts for over 12 million euros of tenders. Finance councillor Jose Hurtado Paredes (pictured) from the Green Party claimed that they had uncovered many irregularities since a coalition of parties took over control of the council from the PP in June. In turn, his PP predecessor, Joaquín Albaladejo, has rubbished the claims saying the financial management in the

last administration had been some of the best that city

had seen and without the need to put up taxes.

ANOTHER BUNGEE DEATH A Dutch teenage girl was killed on Tuesday while bungee jumping from a viaduct in Cantabria in northern Spain. The 17-year-old fell some 40 metres into a dry riverbed below. The teenager had been in a group from the Netherlands and Belgium staying at a nearby surf camp. Last month, a British tourist, Kleyo De Abreu, was killed in a bungee jump off a bridge near Granada, after she suffered fatal injuries when she hit the wall of the bridge below during her jump.

THE FUTURE’S MORE

French-owned Orange is putting up the cost of its mobile and fixed-line tariffs in Spain next month, following similar moves from its rivals Vodafone and Telefonica/Movistar. Orange bought up Jazztel in June, cutting down the main operators in Spain's telecoms market to just three, ending a six-year period of falling prices in the Spanish mobile phone market. Orange said it was adapting its services to the greater data capacity requirements of smartphones due to the growth of 4G services.

NOUS SOMMES ANGRY

Spain has told France to sort out the attacks on its lorry drivers which are being carried by striking French farmers. Spain's Foreign

Office says that the French government has to stop the unprovoked violence on their drivers, with their lorry cargoes being ransacked as

part of an angry dispute within the French agricultural sector, which according to workers, is on the brink of financial ruin. French farmers have been frequently threatening to unload any meat or fruit bound for the French market. They have reportedly used tractors at times to block the motorway not far from the Spanish border, causing traffic jams can stretch for kilometres, and they've done the same at the border with Germany. Alicante and Murcia area lorry drivers are now trying to use alternative routes to get into France to avoid any further hassle.

BIG BLAZE

GIVE A FIG

Monday morning drivers around Valencia City on the V30 and V31 highways got a shock when a cow meandered around the busy roads. The animal launched its

escape bid from a trailer at around 9.00am with the farmer calling in the local police who closed the carriageways off, whilst he herded the happy bovine back onto his vehicle.

FAMILY TRAGEDY

Fruit and vegetable producers are trying to give the fig the same kind of status that artichokes have brought to the Almoradi and Vega Baja areas, with Albatera’s Albafruits co-operative looking to brand their local produce as Breva de Albatera. Figs are being given a strong push under this new label which is seen as producing a quality seal that fig buyers will respect, thus boosting the reputation of the area for figs, and branding the region as distinct from other fig growing parts of Spain. Fig production is down on previous years due to water shortages, but the co-operative is

still confidant of producing around 350 thousand tons locally, most of which is earmarked for export.

Around 500 firefighters brought a wildfire in western Spain under control on Sunday after it had destroyed nearly 6,500 hectares of land in the Extremadura region. Reinforcements came across the border from Portugal which sent 100 firefighters, along with teams from neighbouring regions. By late Sunday morning, the

authorities said the wildfire was under control in the Sierra de Gata mountain range, where the fire first broke out on Thursday of last week. Some 2,400 residents had been evacuated from their homes, and the cause of the fire was believed to be arson, according to the head of the regional government, Guillermo Fernandez Vara.

HAVE GUN, WILL QUIT

HOT BEAT

A local councillor in the town of Serra in Valencia province was found hanged last Sunday morning after he had been taken into custody for his alleged involvement in his wife's death in a fire. Marcos Cabo was a councillor in Serra was found hanging by a sheet from a window hinge in his cell in Picassent prison. Attempts to revive him failed. The councillor was arrested last week after an investigation into the death of his wife - 41-year-old Dolores Moya - in a house fire which led the Guardia Civil to suspect that he was involved. On his arrest, Cabo was sus-

pended by his party, the Esquerra Unida. Cabo had protested his innocence and he had been put on suicide watch at Picassent prison. Details of the charges against Cabo had not been released, but it is believed that the courts in Lliria, on the outskirts of Valencia City, had charged him with violence, and possibly murder, after his wife was found dead in the bath tub after a huge fire razed their home to the ground at the end of last month. The judge ordered Cabo to be taken into pre-trial custody, denying him bail and revoking parental authority over his two young children.

British coppers linked up with their Spanish counterparts this week to help patrol two notorious troublespots in a fortnight's trial on Ibiza and Mallorca. Two officers from the West Midlands Police will be pounding the beat at Magaluf and San Antonio to help the Guardia Civil in their investigations. "This trial reflects the close cooperation between

our two countries on policing and security matters," said the UK's Spanish ambassador, Simon Manley. "The presence of UK police officers will help to remind British holidaymakers of the importance of respecting local laws and customs, ensuring that everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday, free from trouble and crime."

A hired assassin chickened out of a double killing and shopped his bosses to the police in a failed bid to grab control of a funeral parlour, with a Madrid couple ending up behind bars for their trouble. In 2008, Ana Belén E.G began an affair with Jesús M.P., the son-inlaw of the owner of the funeral home. Both were in unhappy marriages and so they came up with an idea that would solve everything at one stoke. The plan saw them hiring a killer to bump

off Ana Belén's husband as well as the owner of the funeral parlour. But things went dramatically wrong when the hitman got cold feet and popped along instead to the police to tell them about the grisly plan that he had been hired to carry out. Ana Belén E.G was given a ten year stretch by Madrid' Provincial Court on two counts of soliciting a hitman while her partner in crime was sentenced to six years on one count of the same crime.

I’m just wild about Harry

I shaved off my beard 18 years ago. It was a Wednesday. I know it was a Wednesday because it was the same day Mrs S visited her widowed aunt in Wigan. Indeed, Mrs S used to visit her widowed aunt every Wednesday ever since her widowed aunt's husband passed away and left her a . . . er, widow. Poor fellow, the uncle died of a -- let me think -- yes, he died of a Tuesday. Anyway, on the Wednesday I shaved off my beard I woke up that morning with the appendage still fixed firmly to my face. Little did I know that my grand sacrifice would be taking place later in the day. I could hear Mrs S clattering around in the kitchen as she prepared for her weekly pilgrimage to Wigan, bearing such gifts as replacement batteries for the hand-held fan which her aunt would clutch frighteningly close to her nose for hours on end. It would have been easier for her to move her rocking chair further away from the imitation coal fire which the old dear kept switched on at full power all day long because it reminded her of those great days of real grates. Apart from the constant danger of Mrs S's aunt either spontaneously combusting or catching her wrinkled pro-

boscis on the hand-held fan's whirling plastic (but still sharpish) blades, there was the question of who paid the whopping electricity bills incurred by the old girl's permanently switched-on fire. I'm almost reliably informed that the aunt had a wealthy brother-in-law who supported her financially. I never met the bloke but I believe he'd named both his sons Robert to show the world that he had a Bob or two. (Sorry about that. I just couldn't resist.) 'Go figure,' I mused as I tugged at my beard and waited for Mrs S to leave the house so that I could leap out of bed and act daft. My day off from work always started with me reciting US President Abe Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in front of the bathroom mirror. Why I did that I'm not sure but it probably had something to do with the gravitas my beard gave me. I was so proud of my growth. It had taken me six months to cultivate and was the first thing I had achieved in my life without engaging the help of others. We had grown very attached to each other, my beard and me, since the very beginning when I had nurtured an undisciplined chinful of stubble into the mature and lovable set of whiskers

that it was now. Please don't tell anyone but I was so enamoured of my hairy creation that I had even given it a name, Harry, after a favourite uncle of mine who, although cleanshaven, was a very nice man. 'Don't forget to eat or you'll go dizzy and drop dead!' Mrs S called to me upstairs before she departed for Wigan. That was a good sign. Her parting shot on a Wednesday was always a pointer to her mood. Today she cared whether I lived or died. I should have known better. Having lulled me into thinking that all was bright and sunny in my world, Mrs S launched a thunderbolt. 'Don't forget to take the dog out . . . and shave off that bloody beard!' I clamped my hands over my chin in the hope that Harry the beard wouldn't hear any more. But the damage had been done. I felt Harry bristling with indignation. 'But my beard gives me charisma and machismo and other high-scoring Scrabble words,' I whined to Mrs S. 'It makes you look like a startled lavatory brush,' Mrs S shot back. 'Just lose the beard!' And I heard the front door slam. Do any of you remember

that bit near the end of The Magnificent Seven when the leader of the bandits takes away our heroes' six-shooters and throws the Seven out of the Mexican village? When they are far enough away, the Seven are given back their horses and weapons and are expected to return across the border. But the Seven decide that they aren't going to leave and the character Britt, played by James Coburn, makes a defiant little speech before they head back to the village for a final showdown. Well, I echoed Britt's words as Mrs S left the house. Walking over to the bedroom window (and making sure

Mrs S was out of earshot) I declared: 'Nobody gives me back my guns and says run.' At the same time I realised that my declaration of resistance made little sense in the context of my current situation and that quite frankly I had sounded right daft talking about guns when all that was going on was a bit of a domestic between a bloke and his missus -- which I was bound to lose. And so half an hour later Harry the beard was lying in tatters in the bathroom sink. Tears rolled down my hairless face and mingled with the dollop of Aloe Vera I'd slapped on to soothe my savaged cheeks.

Six months down the plughole of life, I thought, and crawled back into bed to sob myself to sleep. As usual I dreamt about Dolly Parton coming into my lingerie establishment to be measured for a new foundation garment and, as usual, I woke up just as I found the tape measure. I tentatively touched my face -- and felt whiskers! It was a miracle but it appeared that Harry the beard was back! I gave my muttonchops a triumphant tug -- and the hair instantly disappeared. 'You!' I cried. 'Why can't you sleep at the bottom of the bed like any normal dog?'

BREAKING BAD

The Guardia Civil have arrested 34 members of a drug smuggling gang that shipped marijuana and cocaine between Spain and Columbia. The Guardia carried out swoops in Madrid,

the Basque Country and Cantabria in the north and the Balearic Islands. Sixteen Colombians and seven Spaniards were among those arrested as part of the operation, which

began in April 2014 after police were tipped off that a bar in Santander was peddling drugs. The Guardia found out that the bar owner belonged to the Columbian based gang and was a major distribution point for the drugs across Spain. The gang distributed drugs to smaller drug dealers as well as to bar customers, with the premises also used for money laundering. The authorities seized 13 kilos of dry marijuana; 25 marijuana plants; and one kilo of cocaine as well as speed and crystal in their raids on 17 homes. They also discovered a meth lab in one of the homes that was searched.

HAPPY HOLIDAY

A High Court judge has said that a man who has been implicated in one of Spain's biggest ever political scandals can go on a fortnight's holiday, The former treasurer of the Partido Popular, Luis Bárcenas, is currently on bail pending trial on corruption charges. Bárcenas was sent to prison in June last year over fears that he would be a flight risk, but then that ruling was changed and he was granted 200 thousand euro bail in January, though his passport was taken away from him

Bárcenas has now been allowed to take two weeks' holiday in a home he owns in the ski resort of Baqueira Beret in Lleida province, a home that was allegedly paid for, at least in part, with "black "money. Bárcenas is now required to sign in once a week at the law courts in Viella, a few kilometres from his holiday home. Prosecutors believe he has millions of euros hidden away in banks in Switzerland and South America, and continue to scour through financial records to find definitive evidence of this. Bárcenas was

given permission to spend time at a Catalunya ski resort back in February.

TRULY RESTRAINED

A man’s been handed a 16 month jail term for

threatening to kill his former partner in the Murcia town

of San Javier. Cartagena’s Criminal Court upheld two sentences of eight months each granted by a lower court in Murcia, for two threatening incidents by the man which included verbal and menacing behaviour. The woman has also been granted a 300 metre restraining order against him, which will last for two years, and he is not allowed any form of communication with her over the same period of time.

PLENTY FOR NOTHING

At least half a million euro has been conned out of tourists who believed they were booking luxury villas for a special holiday on the Costa del Sol, but they ended up getting absolutely nothing. The National Police have arrested five people who they say were behind the fake rental scam. The Marbella-based gang went onto the internet to advertise luxury villa lettings, but the property owners knew nothing of any such arrangements. The conmen advertised the villas for very competitive prices but the kicker was that they wanted the money upfront to "secure" the holiday let. The victims would then arrive for their Spanish break, only to find

out that the villas were not being rented and that the owners were oblivious of what was going on! The National Police started investigating in mid-July when they got their first complaint. "One of the victims was cheated of 55 thousand euro for two luxury villas", said a police spokesman.

“When they arrived in Marbella, they found the owners knew nothing about the reservation." The police added that all of the nine victims so far were foreigners who were conned out of 95 thousand euro, but are almost certain that there will be more people that will come forward,

CLOSING SOON?

The recently elected PSOE-led Guardamar government is set to implement a Valencia Supreme Court ruling to close down the Sunday “El Campico” market, according to the Informacion newspaper. The report says that council is awaiting a “technical report” ahead of enforcing the closure. Earlier this year, a manager of another local

MAJOR CRIME INITIATIVE

Beach hoggers are being targeted at a popular spot on the Costa del Sol with breakfast patrols by the local police to stop people getting up early and reserving places on the sand with towels and umbrellas. The council at Torrox has declared war on the beach hoggers and if police spot towels, sunbeds, umbrellas and any clothes but no people in sight, all the items are being scooped up by a special vehicle and confiscated. The possessions are then stored in a ware-

house for up to a fortnight, and the owner has to pay a fine of 30 euro to get them back. If not, they go in the bin. Ferrara beach is used by thousands of tourists on a daily basis but it is particularly narrow and has been facing problems with space at the height of the season. The move though has been slammed by some people in the area who concerned that the police are not be used in their main role which is to fight crime at what is a busy time of the year.

market threatened to take legal action against the council for not enforcing the Supreme Court order. “El Campico” has been running snce 1992 with hundreds of stalls and bars, with the Supreme Court saying that public interests were not served by it continuing. The market is a separate entity from the Moncayo market operating across the road.

DRONING ON The Ministry of Defence of the Spanish Government has decided to spend 25 million euro on four reconnaissance drones and two ground stations. The order has been placed with an American company to provide the Reaper drones, which are

already used in the UK and France. The un-crewed aircraft are capable of flying uninterrupted for up to a day and get as high as 45,000 feet. They can be fitted with high definition cameras and can record activities from afar without being noticed.

EVEN KEEL

Spanish prices rose slightly in July, the second marginal increase over two months in a row as the economy strengthened with retailers and hotels put up their charges for the high season. Figures released by the

National Statistics Institute yesterday show that inflation rose by only 0.1 percent in July from a year earlier, in keeping with weak inflation levels in the rest of the Eurozone, adding to the positive future forecasts.

MANHUNT LAUNCHED

The bodies of two women who reported missing last week, were found last Wednesday by a river in Castilla La Mancha. The remains of Laura del Hoyo, 24, and Marina Okarynska, 26, were found by a cyclist six days after they disappeared in Cuenca. Police are trying to find Sergio Morate, the ex-boyfriend of Okarynska who the girls went to visit on the night they went missing. The two women were discovered at

the source of the river Huécar, three kilometers outside the Castilla La Mancha town of Palomera, where Morate’s family had a home. The police believe that Morate may have fled to Italy by car, whilst though the results of the postmortems are yet to be published, there have been reports that the bodies of the women had been burnt and covered in lime before being dumped near the river.

SILENT RESULT A man has walked free from an Alicante court after his nine year daughter refused to give evidence against him in an assault case, which also saw his wife preferring to stay silent on the matter. The 45 year

old man from Banyeres de Mariola, in the northern part of Alicante Province, was acquitted by an Alicante court judge as there was no evidence to present against him in a severe beating case going back to March.

OFF THE RAILS

Spanish train drivers are to stage a series of one day strikes next month in a row over safety and what the unions say is the undermanning of the rail network. RENFE employees will strike on Friday, September

4th; Friday, September 11th; Monday, September 14th; and Tuesday, September 15th. It’s not known how many drivers will take part and what level of services will be maintained.

SPEED FREAK

DGT´s airborne radar speed detector, Pegasus, clocked a Porsche Panamera travelling at 218 kilometres per hour on the R-4 ring road of Madrid. The speeding vehicle had French license

plates and in the back seat of the vehicle was a child who was not wearing the mandatory restraining system or seatbelt. The crew called on ground troops to intercept and stop the vehicle.

ON YOUR BIKE The National Police have arrested a 46 year old man who has been accused of stealing from the same Elche house twice, wearing cycling gear and using a bike for his getaway. Three other people have also been detained in the same case, with two of them accused of selling on the stolen items. The police got involved after a couple reported a number of items missing from their home, including jewellery and cash, despite their property being securely locked. The husband said that he recently been the victim of theft when his back-

pack was stolen in Torrevieja which contained his house keys as well as personal documents. During the investigation, witnesses reported seeing a man wearing cycling gear and a helmet hanging around near the Elche property, two days before the theft occurred. The tip off then led officers to a nearby shop which was selling items which happened to matching the descriptions of the stolen goods, with the shop owner describing the seller as wearing the same clothing as the person witnesses reported hanging around the property.

SICK SELLER

The National Police have arrested a man for selling Tshirts showing a British aid worker as he was about to be killed by Islamic State militants, as well as a range of clothing bearing Isis slogans. The Spaniard was detained during a police operation on Tuesday night in Narón, in north-west Spain. From his shop and online store, the man sold a range of clothes promoting Isis and another Islamist militant group, Harakat Sham alIslam, the interior ministry said. They included T-shirts with a silk-screened image showing the hostage Alan Henning as he was about to

be beheaded by Islamic State last year, together with his killer and the Isis flag.

TRAGEDY

A mother-of-two has been arrested for slashing her three month old baby’s throat with a kitchen knife at a church on Wednesday morning. The 37-year-old is accused of killing the child at the altar of a municipal burial ground’s chapel in La Villa de Don Fadrique, near Toledo. Reports suggest that the woman had recently spent time in a psychiatric hospital and picked up her son that day from a relative's house. She is then alleged to have taken the baby to the cemetery where she used a kitchen knife to fatally cut the infant's neck. After the act, the woman is said to have burst into a nearby

chapel yelling 'I have the devil inside'. A neighbour called the police when she saw the woman walking around near the cemetery looking 'very nervous'. The Guardia Civil showed up at the scene where they found the dead baby and the mother walking around in shock. The woman was treated by doctors and taken to a nearby hospital for further assessment. The woman was married to a man from Colombia who found out about the grisly murder later in the day. The couple have one other three year old child, who was safe with a relative.

SHOWDOWN A riot broke out on the streets of the resort of Salou on Tuesday morning, and it wasn't anything to do with drunken tourists. Instead several hundred people protested over the death of a Senegalese street seller, who lost his life during a police raid, with the 50-year-old man meeting his end when he jumped from an apartment balcony. His home was being raided by the Catalunyan equivalent of the Guardia Civil, the Mossos d'Esquadra, as a part of an on-going operation against peddlers of fake

goods. The death provoked violent clashes between the police and the immigrant African community in the Costa Dorada resort with rubbish containers overturned and street furniture hurled at officers, who had to disperse the crowds by using rubber bullets. At least 16 people were injured during the clashes, including tourists, and one person was arrested. The Mossos said they also arrested a dozen people during their dawn raids against the hawkers.

Reap the benefits of learning spanish

¡Hola!

This week we are going to look at some useful Spanish phrases with their English

meaning, see how many of these you can incorporate into your week as you speak with Spanish friends, neighbours and the various people you come into contact with. Some of these sayings may have other meanings but I am going to give you the common idiom rather than the direct translation which it may also mean. When you´re talking to friends and you´re not sure about what they are saying you can reply with ¡Anda ya! which can be used to mean ´pull the other one!´ or ´you´re not serious!´, ¡Anímate! is a very common word in Spanish, if someone is feeling a bit down or worried about something you can say !Anímo! or !Anímate! which translates as ´cheer up´. ¡Cálmate! is used to tell someone to calm down, or ´keep your hair on!´. If you want someone to hurry up you say to them ¡Date prisa!. note the use of the object pronoun ´te´ in the aforementioned phrases, which I hope you remember means ´you´ Imagine you are having a conversation with someone and you aren´t sure that what they are saying is correct you can say to them ¿De verdad? Which means ´really?´ this can be used as a positive statement as ´really!´ - ¡de verdad!

When someone sneezes (estornuda) I hope you know that you say ¡Jesús! and if someone annoys you, you may want to say ¡qué cara! Which in English translates as ´What a cheek! ¡qué lío! is used to mean ´what a mess!´ in a general work type of way, as in you have a lot of paperwork to sort through and you don´t know where to start, un lío translates as ´a mess´. You may also hear Spanish speaker say ´tengo mucho lío´ when they want to say they have a lot of trouble or hassle. If you want to buy something and you think it´s overpriced you may say ¡qué timo! which we would say in English as ´what a rip off!´ When you´re enjoying a drink with friends I hope you all raise your glasses and

say a big ¡Salud! instead of cheers! The next idiom was covered by me a while ago but I think it´s worth repeating especially if you have children: ¡ten cuidado! Can you remember what it means? That´s right in English we would say ´be careful!´ or ´watch out!´ If you want to say ´How come?´ In English you may be struggling with a translation as it´s an English phrase the translation of course is not literal, so you would say ¿cómo es eso? or ¿por qué? To say ´by the way´ you would say in Spanish ´A propósito´. One translation that is literal is ´cruzando los dedos´ which or course is ´crossing your fingers´. You should all know the next one, how do we say ´you´re welcome´ in

Spanish? Of course we say ´de nada´. If you have had a busy day and you just want to relax on your own for a while you can say ´leave me alone´, or you could say ´déjeme en paz´. It does take time to master all the nuances of the Spanish language and speaking with native Spaniards is the perfect way to it, which is why I’m going to start some classes in the Almoradi area in October with a native speaker. We will cater for all levels and give me a call or send me an e-mail without any obligation! The number is 625 437 217 and the e-mail is onevoicespain@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great week, ¡hasta la próxima!

A purr-fect life

Pets benefit child development

Having a pet is usually a rite of childhood. Whether it is a hermit crab or gold fish, a dog, cat or horse, children enjoy the companionship offered by animals. Did you know, however, that not only can pets be a source of warm, fuzzy entertainment, but they can offer several developmental benefits to children as well? A child's physical, social, emotional and cognitive development can all be encouraged by interaction with the family pet. "Pets provide an impetus for running and practicing motor skills," says Sheryl Dickstein, Ph.D., Director of Humane Education for the ASPCA. Walking a dog or running in the yard and throwing a ball are great ways to exercise the dog as well as for children to get away from sedentary indoor activities and move around. Small motor skills

can be encouraged by allowing children to scoop food and pour water into dishes, and by helping to groom them. Depending on the child's age, parental supervision is recommended for both the child's and the pet's safety. For children especially, pets can be wonderful social facilitators. Children are more prone to approach and interact with another child who is playing with a pet. In this way, a pet can be the bridge between a less socially outgoing child and other potential playmates. Because of the special bond that often develops between pet and child, pets can sometimes fill the role of comforter. Since the relationship is non-judgmental from the pet's perspective, a hurting child might be more willing to initially trust a pet than a person.

Cats are evolutionary masterpieces of design. They have evolved in such a way that many of their characteristics, including their behaviour, are multifunctional — helping to increase the odds of survival. Scratching marks territories, it communicates conflicted feelings and it maintains nail health. Whiskers feel wind directions, broadcast moods, and help cats navigate. Purring helps newborns survive, promotes healing, and is a communication tool. WHAT CAUSES PURRING? There are a few theories about the anatomy of cat purrs. The one that stands up the strongest states that purrs are produced through a combination of the laryngeal and diaphragmatic muscles along with a neural oscillator. This theory makes sense, because when cats suffer from laryngeal paralysis, they cannot purr. A second theory claims that the small

hyoid bone is responsible for purrs. The hyoid bone is located between the skull and the larynx. Another theory states that purrs initiate from the central nervous system. PRIMAL PURRING Purring is vital for the survival of newborn kittens. The little ones are welcomed into the world by the soft vibrations of their mum’s purr. They are born deaf and blind, but they do feel vibrations. These sweet vibrations are perfect homing devices, guiding newborns to the protective warmth of mum’s body and to their first meals. Kittens start communicating back to mum and their siblings through purrs. They start purring when they are two days old. When kittens nurse, they cannot meow, so they show their contentment by purring. Mum purrs back comfort and safety. There is another way primal purring ups the odds for survival.

Purring helps keep neonates safe from predators. Hungry predators are more likely to detect cries and other vocalisations than the vibrations of purrs. Cat mums purr when they give birth. In addition to benefitting kittens, purring helps the mothers in a number of ways. The new mums are vulnerable and cannot defend themselves when they are giving birth. Painful cries attract danger. Instead of crying, they purr. Purring releases endorphins, reducing pain while simultaneously reassuring the newborns without luring unwanted visitors. EVERYONE BENEFITS FROM PURRING Cat parents are familiar with the relaxing purrs of cats as they cuddle and stroke them. These little purr machines exude contentment, with the added benefit of uplifting the moods of the people who adore them while lowering their blood pressure. Many kitties quickly figure out another basic benefit of purring — soliciting food and attention from their favourite people. Since most cat-parents lavish attention on their cats when they purr, cats often purr when they want affection and treats. HEALING POWER Not all purrs are purrs of contentment. Cats will purr when they are stressed, in pain, or severely ill. Often,

Pets

cats at the end of life will purr. Cats enter life and leave life on a purr. What makes a purr a purr has tickled the curiosity of the scientific community for years. Studies find that purrs oscillate at a low frequency of 25 to 100 HZ. These frequencies promote bone healing and ease muscle pain. Clinical trials of people receiving ultrasound treatments have proven that lowfrequency/intensity ultrasound accelerates healing in fractures. Purrs reassure and soothe, they promote healing, and reduce pain. There are also reports that cats heal faster than other animals that do not purr, and that purring releases endorphins. Endorphins reduce pain while healing takes place. Purring is the feline equivalent of expensive ultrasound treatments, but without the medical bills. EXERCISE It is hard to imagine that relaxed, purring cats are in the midst of low-intensity exercise sessions, but some experts believe that the vibrations from purring may stimulate muscles and bones without the cat extending a lot of energy and effort. Something for you to think about the next time you cuddle with your little purrmachine. Looks are deceiving — in reality, she or he might be heavily engaged in calisthenics!

Tony Mayes - About Life

Get the priorities right

There's no doubt that we're in the middle of what journalists call the silly season (where news is short and oddball stories take centre stage). But I couldn't resist a chuckle when I read a collection of stories about policing in Britain where you get the impression that the cops are not going to investigate anything anymore that is unless they get a sniff of historical sexual abuse. They're facing cutbacks in funding and have to find economies. Forces may have to merge to reduce manpower but that means only one chief constable and that's going down like a lead balloon. And when it's suggested that there should be UK-wide purchasing of things like police helmets, handcuffs, etc, there's criticism because it takes away local control, even though costs could be cut by half. And now comes the most absurd proposals yet:- people living on odd numbers of streets won't get "minor" crimes like attempted breakin’s investigated but people living in even numbered houses will; and that folk will be invited to e-mail in pictures of incidents to save police attending. It's amazing how much police time, effort and money can be devoted to certain things and not others. Consider the

witch-hunt against journalists paying for stories called chequebook journalism. It was suggested the money was bribery, but thankfully, common sense prevailed and investigative journalism is still alive and well as the cases were thrown out by juries, but only after millions of pounds were wasted in an attempt by "authority" to crack down on the Press. I don't think the public really want to know whether former PM Ted Heath was having sex with boys - after all he's been dead for 10 years. What's far more important (in addition of course to the trauma suffered by the youngsters) is whether there was any official cover-up and by whom and to bring prosecutions against them, because, no doubt, if there was a cover-up, the culprits are still alive. The trouble about historic sexual abuse and the police going public with names, it encourages all manner of oddballs to make spurious allegations, all of which have to be followed up and many end up wasting police time - diverting them away from what the public care more about like assaults, robberies, burglaries, law and order offences and real sex crimes happening today. As the newspaper silly

season progresses the stories get sillier, and here's a few more examples. An Algerian bridegroom agreed to marry his bride in an arranged marriage. All was well during the ceremony, when he presumably was satisfied with what he saw. However, it all went wrong the following morning when he looked upon his bride's face for the first time without makeup. Apparently it was so bad he failed to recognise her and even accused her of being a thief who had broken into his house! He decided to take her to court - accusing her of inflicting 'psychological suffering' on him by 'cheating' him with her make-up and is seeking ÂŁ13,000 damages. Silly season matrimonial stories have come out of India too. There you can get a divorce for non-physical abuse; the problem however, is determining whether that abuse is bad enough to warrant the court ending a marriage. A sailor claimed his wife's love of going out partying constituted nonphysical abuse. However, the court concluded that the husband also liked parties, and so what was good enough for him was good enough for her. Divorce application failed. But one application which did succeed was that of a husband

who accused his wife of being far too demanding in bed. He said she had an "excessive and insatiable appetite for sex" ever since their marriage two years prior. He alleged that she would force him to have sex, even at times when he was sick, and threatened to sleep with other men if or when he refused. She failed to attend court, which led the judge to conclude the husband's story was true! In another case a man sought a divorce from his wife on the grounds of cruelty in part because of her dress sense. The man, in his 30s and married since 2009, was reportedly anguished by his wife's decision to often wear shirts and trousers to her workplace instead of traditional Indian clothing. This divorce was granted, but overruled by a higher court. In another arranged marriage, a husband won a divorce because he discovered pimples and boils on his wife's face when she removed her veil and this prevented him from consummating their marriage during their honeymoon. The court decided her "repulsive" skin condition was undoubtedly tragic for her but also traumatic for the spouse. Finally a man won a divorce because his new wife refused to make tea for his family. All food for thought!! If you are in the UK and spot a man dressed in camouflage and hiding in bushes there's a very good reason. He's lying in wait in the hope of catching dog owners in the act of not clearing up after their pets! Andrew Hawes, from Leiston, Suffolk, plans to take photos of the culprits and publish the pictures online if they refuse to clear up the mess. And he will pass the details to police once offenders are identified. We need the same public spirited action here in Spain - if only the police would take the appropriate action and take offenders to court.

Those hotel staff in Sousse, Tunisia, who formed a human shield to prevent the madman extremist from killing even more holidaymakers than he did were nothing less than national heroes. The death toll was 38 people, 30 of them Brits - but it could have been far higher had it not been for employees at the Bellevue Park Hotel. How sad it is to hear that despite their brave efforts, the resort's staff are now set to be sacked because terror warnings issued by the Foreign Office have left the hotel empty and forced into closure. Those staff would have been getting good pay and loads of tips at the peak of the summer season. Instead they now face life on the dole and in Tunisia being unemployed is far, far worse than in the UK, because that country has no benefits system. A total of 100 staff are due to lose their jobs on August 20th, and sadly in many places in the world there is scant justice - here is an example where there is none. Too many Brits are living on a financial knife-edge and an interest rate rise could easily tip them over the edge. Bank of England governor Mark Carney says Britain suffered a deeper recession and took longer to recover because families were crippled by personal debt. Banks had gone lending crazy and people had over-stretched themselves.

And what has happened since is that instead of people paying off capital while interest rates are at rock bottom levels, many have actually built up more debts, and that doesn't bode well when rates start to rise. Mark Carney says the one redeeming factor is that wages are rising, and this will allow most to cope with higher mortgage repayments. But the danger of that is that we will go into a wage rise interest rate rise spiral creating increasing inflation. It really is a tricky call economically. Carney wants Brits on one hand to keep spending to avoid the recovery stalling, but has sent out a clear warning that Brits should prepare for interest rate rises. And that cannot come soon enough to help the many pensioners and ex-pats trying to live on appallingly low interest rates on their savings. Didn’t you love what England did to the Aussies by thrashing them at Trent Bridge to get back the Ashes last Saturday, and of course skittling them out for 60 last Thursday? How many of you Brits heard this on the news, or watched live as Australian after Australian made their way back to the pavilion and had an amazing feeling of true national pride? Come on, be honest, it made you feel good to the British - and even better to be English. I found myself whistling Rule Britannia.

Skyscanner sent out some agents on a secret mission to price check some of your most desired duty free items in three continents to find out which store is really the cheapest. How does duty free work? The essence of duty free

shopping is rather selfexplanatory: they sell products without duty (local import tax). For example, buying goods in a duty free shop in Barcelona Airport means that you avoid paying the duty tax that Spain places on imported goods, normally included as part of a product’s list price. In addition to this, duty free shops in airports are also tax-free. This means that you don’t have to pay VAT (Value Added Tax) which would normally be included in the price of goods sold in the European Union. This could mean a saving of between 5% and 25% depending on the country, which is great news if you're panic-buying lastminute presents on the way back from holiday - or just can’t resist a good deal! Governments want to make sure that goods sold without charging import duty leave the country, hence why duty free is found in airports, sea ports and at border control. It is however, important to note that there are exceptions. In Malaysia and Argentina, for example, duty free shops

are located not only in the departure lounges but also in the arrival lounges after border control. The Philippines have taken it one step further and have a duty free shopping centre situated just a mile away from the airport in Manila. The largest duty free networks include: World Duty Free, Dufry, Gebr, Heinemann, DFS and Flemingo. Why do prices vary in duty free stores? Legal trade tax is much cheaper at duty free shops compared with the high street. But duty free retailers are not exempt from all taxes, but only on parts income tax is charged on top of employee wages for example. Secondly, the reduction in the overall tax rate of say 15% does not necessarily lead to lower prices for the same goods. There are several reasons for this. “The prices depend on two factors: geography and currency exchange rate”, explains the president of Generation Research. In addition, if the seller is sim-

ply wanting to earn more, they can take advantage of the monopoly position available to them - interestingly, sales in Dubai airport’s duty free are approaching an impressive $2billion a year. Where is the cheapest duty free store? The cheapest airport for duty free is entirely dependent on the product that you're hoping to buy. If you're after a 1L bottle of Martini Bianco then the cheapest option would be to buy it from Berlin airport, where it is a staggering 51% cheaper than in Amsterdam airport. It's always a good idea if you have a particular product in mind, such as a bottle of perfume, to research its price in the various airports that you will be flying through. If you were in Dubai and flying back to Copenhagen, a little online research would reveal that you can pick up a bottle of My Burberry 90ml Eau de Toilette for 19% less in Dubai than in Copenhagen's airport. The

only thing that we have found to be the exception in duty free shopping is souvenirs. In most cases, they are more expensive at the airport, even without paying tax, than most souvenir shops in the city of departure - so it pays to pick up some novelty tea towels and tacky fridge magnets before you head for home! Conclusion Amsterdam, Buenos Aires and Tel Aviv are the most expensive airports when it comes to duty free for the products skyscanner.net researched. The results also suggest that possibly Berlin the cheapest airport for duty free shopping. Most of the Duty Free shops have their own websites, which Google can help you find. These sites are not only helpful to compare prices, but can also save you time as many shops offer a great preorder service, where you can choose what you want to buy online a few days before your departure and simply pick up your purchases on the way through the airport.

Endorsement´s Turning Point

Celebrity endorsements have been big for a while now. Katie Price forged a career out of bran Jordan, and no self-respectless, profit driven, public figure is without some kind of merchandising in their own name or adorned with their face, often at over inflated prices and often irrespective of quality, but there´s a new wave of socially responsible marketing that is starting to spread through society, where charities benefit from their sales. It is not a unique phenomenon that businesses are supportive or exclusively representing of charitable missions, the RED

organisation was created in 2006 by Bono and Bobby Shriver, with the sole aim of raising funds for HIV and AIDS eradication, predominantly in Africa. Pop stars giving their time and skills to raise money for charities is one thing, as in the famous Band Aid concert, but RED was set up specifically as a platform for companies to collabor a t e

under a globally recognised set of principles and raise money at the

same time. RED products are easily recognisable to those in the know, and the branding of RED is predominant over all other collaborator identities, and there are some prominent companies involved, from Apple, Bank of America, Starbucks, The Coca-Cola Company and Beats by Dr. Dre. Headphone manufacturer Beats Electronics, who marketed their products under the “by Dr. Dre” name, and their streaming music service, Beats Music, were in the headlines recently on account of Apple buying out the companies to the tune of 3 billion dollars. Dr. Dre himself later releasing his first rap album in 16 years through Apple music. It´s clear that there is a lot of money at stake in the headphone and music streaming service and both Apple and Beats are listed as supporters of RED, but it´s also clear that even with their support a 3 billion dollar price tag means there must be considerable profit in the whole idea. That is where Lstn is hoping now to make a difference. So far, they are largely unheard of, as they are a new company, a “start-up” in fact, with little budget for marketing, but

they hope to move into this saturated market and make a difference, and the way they hope to do this is by being different. IN addition to their obvious electronic components that make them work, Lstn headphones feature real wood panels to add an air of class to their product, with a discreet engraved Lstn logo on each ear. The most unique part of the product is not in the physical characteristics however, it is that for every product purchased, contributes to a fund to provide a hearing aid for somebody who can´t afford the most essential piece of audio receiving devices. Founder Bridget Hilton was inspired by other social entrepreneurs like Toms Shoes and Warby Parker, who sell one pair and give another away. Hilton started the company with a $10,000 loan from a friend and travelled to China to learn firsthand how the manufacturing process works. Hilton intended to use the Kickstarter project to raise funds, but the application was denied because the crowdfunding platform doesn't support charitable causes. She set about creating a website and was spotted by American TV show the Today Show, which gave her product an immediate boost

and led to sales immediately. The only problem being that they had no product to sell, that problem was quickly overcome. Hilton says she's used to the criticism that social enterprise is just a marketing ploy itself. But she insists that's not the case. Running a business this way makes everything much tougher. The company works with the S t a r k e y H e a r i n g Foundation, which is its own charity independent of Lstn and its brand. They are currently America based, but may well spread around

the globe soon, so check out their website, lstnsound.co. Meanwhile, we will have wait and see if this is the end of the celebrity endorsement and the birth of one far more useful and socially responsible, unless of course our celebs sit back as board members of the charit i e s supported a n d reap the benefits without even the slightest of efforts.

Criminal Partnerships – Whatson´s Choice

I was being a hedgehog!!! It was a costume. That is in answer to those who emailed me this week asking what the big brown spikes were coming out of my back. We were talking about hedgehogs if you remember so that´s why I dressed up. I´ve got a hedgehog joke for you this week instead of my usual telebased pun, thanks to Craig who sent it in. I´ll tell you at the end. This week, I am being Audrey from the Little Shop of Horrors, “FEED ME!” There was a Seymour in that musical who fell in love with Audrey, the human not the plant. I am being Audrey the blood thirsty plant. There are lots of Seymours in this week´s edition and I didn´t want to be left out. When I say “lots”, I mean two, but it´s two more than last week!

I thought about dressing up as Sherlock Holmes, playing homage to the partner of my near namesake, near because I have an extra letter thanks to my dad probably having one too many and writing it wrong on the TV license application, and there are lots of detective type shows on at the m o ment, including Sherlock, which I am loving the repeats of by the way and can´t wait until the end of the year to see the next brand new episode. I am also loving Ripper Street, although I already watched the series when it was on Amazon, the fact it has finally made it back on TV is a great testament to the demands of fans, although it should never have been axed in the first place. Then again, neither should The Bill, Spooks, The

Following... The list could go on, but then again I would cull some other shows. On the subject of crime, I have to say that I´m loving Partners In Crime on BBC One on Sunday night. I was a little bit reluctant at first, just because I didn´t think I could take David Walliams seriously enough if I´m, honest, but he has done Agatha Christie work before so I should have given him the benefit of doubt, but he´s actually rather good I think, as is the whole show. This week, a British scientist, Gilbert Worthing, who was working on a top-secret prototype for a nuclear bomb, has gone missing from a military base in Cromer, along with his work. All Tommy knows is that the perpetrator is staying at the nearby Sans Souci guesthouse and is most likely a Soviet superspy code named N... or is it M? Tommy must travel in disguise as a birdwatcher to Cromer, in order to identify which guest at the Sans Souci is holding the British government to ransom.

Things get even more complicated when it turns out that Tuppence, dismayed at being left out, has beaten him to it and already ingratiated herself with the other guests. But Tommy and Tuppence must learn to work together again if they are going to identify the Soviet spy, save the missing scientist, and discover the location of the missing bomb before half of Norfolk is obliterated. In my main pick of the week highlights this week there´s lots more to see on TV, and all of those Seymours I mentioned as Who Do You Think You Are details the life of Jane Seymour, and The Scandalous Lady W takes us on an historic journey back to the 18th century to look at the dramatic life of Seymour, Lady Worsley. Now, back to that hedgehog joke sent in my Craig.” Hedgehogs would probably be a lot more popular if they shared the hedge!” You might need to think about it for a moment, but from me it´s goodnight. Tatty bye my friends, tatty bye.

Who Do You Think You Are? (Jane Seymour)

The Scandalous Lady W If you´re looking for the next big thing in period costume drama, then BBC Two is the place to be this week, as The Scandalous Lady W takes us back to the 18th century. Natalie Dormer, famous for such great shows as Hunger Games, Game of Thrones and The Tudors, leads a cast of British actors in this gripping drama which details the scandalous life of Seymour, Lady Worsley, who dared to leave her husband and elope with his best friend, Captain George Bisset, played by Aneurin Barnard, recently seen in Cilla and The White Queen. Dormer plays the passionate, courageous Seymour,

Lady Worsley, who escapes her troubled marriage only to find herself at the centre of a very public trial brought by her powerful husband Sir Richard Worsley, played by Shaun Evans (famous for Endeavour and The Lost Weekend), who seeks compensation from her lover for the affair. As this extraordinary true story unfolds, Lady Worsley takes the brave decision to publicly expose the secrets of her marriage. The scandalous courtroom revelations challenge the hypocrisy of the law that brands a wife the property of her husband, calling into question the whole concept of a woman’s 'worth'.

The Saturday Night Story Saturday night is the biggest television night of the week. It’s the place where stars are made and dreams can come true. It’s the home of shows, which inspire headlines, drama and dreams. In this two-part series The Saturday Night Story, narrated by TV presenter Stephen Mulhern we take a look back at some of the most jaw dropping, best-loved television moments, as the series charts the key moments in Saturday night TV and tells the story behind some of our best-loved shows and biggest names in entertainment past and present. From variety to comedy, from dating shows to talent shows we celebrate the

most watched Saturday night TV that had the nation captivated and turned people into household names. In the first show The Gladiators including bad-boy Wolf and glamour-puss Jet are reunited by Ulrika Jonsson in Birmingham at the venue where in the 90’s they gripped millions around the UK and Henry Kelly and Matthew Kelly are reunited at the studio where they shot to fame in fun entertainment show Game For A Laugh. The documentaries feature interviews with stars of Saturday night TV past and present including Ant and Dec, Jonathan Ross, Vernon Kay, Bruce Forsyth, Ricky Wilson, Dermot O'Leary, Amanda Holden,

Alesha Dixon, Petula Clark, Cannon and Ball and Marty Wilde. It’s all part of the incredi-

ble story of Saturday night TV…where you just don’t know what’s going to happen next.

British-born Jane Seymour is an award winning Hollywood actress and lives in Malibu, California. She shot to fame as Bond girl Solitaire in Live And Let Die, and went on to star as Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman. She has played historical figures such as Wallace Simpson, Marie Antoinette and a Jewish mother fleeing the Nazis in the drama series War And Remembrance. She has earned an Emmy award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was awarded an OBE in 2000. Jane was born Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg and knows that there is Jewish ancestry on her father’s side of the family - but beyond this knows very little. She suspects that they suffered in the Holocaust, but has never known what happened. “I really care about memories and I want to know more than just the names and the dates of birth and the family tree. I know that some really extraordinary things must have happened to them, especially my Jewish family, the Polish family. I want to know more than just their names.” Jane is keen to find out

about her Jewish great aunts Michaela and Jadwiga and their experiences under Nazi occupation. Jane’s search for the truth takes her to Warsaw where she discovers that although Jadwiga managed to escape the ghetto she was tragically separated from her family; and to France where she follows Michaela and her family in a terrifying flight to Switzerland as they flee the Nazis. “To have survived so much, to have had the strength to keep going, the strength to lose your husband, the strength to not know where your children are, the strength to go on this unbelievable journey, and then when you are finally safe and you’re with your sister… to just give up. “This has just been the most incredible experience for me to learn about Jadwiga and Michaela’s stories. I realise that in my family were two incredibly strong women that survived against all odds. I think the fact that I had the privilege of following both of their stories and that they actually found each other at the end. It’s about the indomitable human spirit.”

Morrissey Joins Grantchester The Living And The Dead

Neil Morrissey is joining the cast of Grantchester, for the second series of the ITV drama. He’s pictured here during his first week on set, alongside James Norton and Robson Green. Grantchester, which is set in the 1950s, follows an unlikely crime-fighting duo of a charismatic, charming clergyman Sidney Chambers (Norton) and gruff, down-to-earth Police Inspector Geordie Keating (Green). Grantchester, is based on The Grantchester Mysteries by James Runcie. Neil Morrissey will play Harding Redmond, a resident of Grantchester and grieving father whose teenage daughter Abigail (Grace Holley) is found dead in suspicious circumstances. Heartbroken and desperate to get to the bottom of what happened to Abigail, Harding accuses Sidney of having an inappropriate relationship with

her. Sidney is determined to prove his innocence but will Harding’s accusations change the way the villagers feel about him? Neil said of his new role: “I'm really excited to be joining the cast of Grantchester. It's great to work with James Norton, Robson Green and the rest of the cast, and I can't wait to film in the actual village of Grantchester, which I know is beautiful. I’m also happy to be sport-

ing a funky fifties moustache, my first foray into top lip decoration since I started acting.” Other new cast who will appear in the series include Claudie Blakley (Lark Rise To Candleford, The Driver), Nigel Planer (The Young Ones, Episodes), Andrew Knott (Black Work, The Driver), Nicky Henson (Downton Abbey, Vera Drake) and Oliver Dimsdale (Harley Street, He Knew He

Was Right). Tessa Peake-Jones (Marchlands, Only Fools and Horses), Morven Christie (Hunted, From There To Here), Kacey Ainsworth (EastEnders, The Wright Way) and Al Weaver (Southcliffe, Sherlock) are all returning to the series. Grantchester is currently in production in London, Cambridge, and Grantchester and is due to transmit on ITV in 2016.

Colin Morgan (Humans, The Fall, Merlin) will play the lead role of Nathan Appleby in brand new eerie mystery The Living And The Dead. The original six part series for BBC One will also star Charlotte Spencer as Charlotte Appleby, Nathan’s wife. Charlotte was BAFTA nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2015 and Colin won a National Television Award for Most Popular Male Drama Performance in 2013. Somerset, 1894. A house that’s almost as old as the English countryside itself. A brilliant young couple inherit the farm and are determined to start a new life together. But their presence in this isolated corner of England starts to unleash strange, unsettling and dangerous supernatu-

ral phenomena that will start to threaten their marriage. This is a drama steeped in the eeriness of the rural world at the moment when the industrial revolution came crashing in to disrupt all the old certainties. Uncanny, intriguing, disturbing. At the series’ heart is the love story of Nathan and Charlotte Appleby: deeply in love with each other but put under extraordinary pressure, they will have to fight to save their marriage and their home. Colin Morgan says: “The Living And The Dead is one of those scripts that you read and are instantly compelled and engaged by. It's intelligent, chilling and engrossing. It's going to be very special and I can't wait to start working on it ”

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI I’m not a regular viewer of the Great British Bake Off as cookery shows (unless Gordon Ramsey is going bonkers on one) are not really my cup of tea. But my glimpses of the first two programmes of the new run of Bake Off confirm that once again, magic is very much in the

air. It’s such a simple format with judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood passing their verdicts and presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc lightening the mood effortlessly, and has brought rich dividends of astonishing early August viewing figures of over 10 million (The X Factor would kill for that)

BAKE OFF RULES for BBC1. It’s just such a pleasant view and I do get the fascination of it, but I wouldn’t lose any sleep if I missed an episode or two. Here’s a quick thumbs up for the Beeb in contrast to ITV. Besides Bake Off at the start of August, we’ve got fresh runs of New Tricks and Ripper Street; the hilarious panel

show Would I Lie To You; the fascinating Who Do You Think You Are?; plus the Agatha Christie drama, Partners in Crime. There’s also the Proms on BBC Four (loved the Seth McFarlane Sinatra concert last Friday) and numerous fine new documentaries. ITV just bring you cheap dross like Flockstars and BBQ King, plus endless plugs for The X Factor and the nice new dramas for the autumn. Not good enough ITV I’m afraid, who have zillions in the bank from not having live European football and have reported massive profits. Rival BBC and commercial channels have shown there are loads of viewers out there wanting to be entertained during the summer, and the old ITV of a decade or so ago would never have been so uninspiring dur-

ing July and August. TV sports highlight shows should always be about the highlights, surely? Do you remember the shambles the BBC inflicted on tennis fans during Wimbledon by creating some cheap mid-evening variety show fronted by Clare Balding, which was pulled after the first week and replaced by the old format? Channel Five have fallen into the same trap at the start of their three year Football League contract with their new Saturday night peak time show called, wait for it, Football League Tonight. It’s another contract lost by the BBC, but as snoozy as Manish Bhashin and his late night pundits were for the Beeb, you did get tons of action, analysis, and interviews. Five’s new programme seems desperately to be

trying to be something different, being a cross between Sky’s Soccer AM and a traditional highlights show, but fails miserably. The presenters Kelly Cates and George Riley (both from BBC Radio) are good, but the format with inaudible inconsequential comments from fans in the studio and the constant chopping and changing all over the place was just amateurish. Crucially, and I sadly counted this, there were not even 40 minutes of highlights, which frankly bordered on being a criminal act. The ultimate verdict came in the ratings which were poor (for a commercial channel) with the new programme getting half the viewers that the old Beeb show got at midnight some three hours later. Back to the drawing board methinks!

Tinder Hits Back

A Summer Sizzle for Long Hot Nights

If you´re looking to spice up these long, hot summer nights, maybe a little cocktail or two will ease the mood. Although alcohol can increase the desire, it can reduce the ability, so remember moderation is key, so take your time, kick back, wrap your arms around that special someone, and melt into an evening of tranquil

bliss, eased on with a sprinkle of magic. Lychee Martini Become a sexy bartender for your lover and surprise them with a Lychee Martini. Lychee is a fruit found in South China, which has become fashionable because of their exotic roots. Mix the strong flavour of the vodka with lychee, vermouth and ice in a cocktail shaker, and then serve it in a Martini glass with two lychees. Chin, chin to good health (and more)! Cardamom cocktail Or how about a Cardamom cocktail containing a unique spice from India which is used as a natural remedy for sexual impotence. Try grinding the spice and mix with cucumber juice…the perfect way to start the night. Lucky Devil Cinnamon and saffron help to bring out the naturally arousing spice in you. Together with cardamom and honey and adding a splash of vodka to create the Lucky Devil, and you might be one for the rest of the night. Chocolate Strawberry

Twist Chocolate is renowned for its arousing qualities. Cocoa contains an alkaloid stimulant similar to caffeine and helps to produce serotonin that makes us feel good. It’s important to remember that the darker the chocolate i.e. the more cocoa that the chocolate contains, the more pleasure! Blend the vodka, strawberry juice, chocolate and ice in a blender. Squirt melted chocolate into the bottom of the glass, then pour in the cocktail and add strawberries for the finishing touch. Pear Fizz Champagne is the drink of

love and it’s been said that certain dry champagnes can replicate the aroma of female pheromones. So pop open the bubbly, add a few slices of pear, a dash of vodka and lemon juice. Why not accompany with some chocolate covered strawberries to get the night well and truly started. We do hope these little treats have help add a spark to your evening, if you´re looking for an extra boost, make sure you check out the huge range of products available on the website, guiltypleasures365.com, delivered direct and discreetly to your door.

Popular dating app Tinder has embarked on a Twitter rant hitting back at allegations in Vanity Fair that the swipe one way to like and the other way to dislike application is responsible for a “dating apocalypse”. It was inevitable that Tinder staff would defend their position, but the rant was so continual it quickly went viral with many users and supporters retweeting the comments. The messages ranged from simple, “It’s about meeting new people for all kinds of reasons. Travel, dating, relationships, friends and a ton of marriages.” Right through to examples of how the app is breaking down barriers in countries where sexuality is a problem, “Talk to the female journalist in Pakistan who wrote just yesterday about using Tinder to find a relationship where being gay is illegal.” As well as how censorship is also bypassed through the app, “Talk to our many users in China and

North Korea who find a way to meet people on Tinder even though Facebook is banned.” “The ability to meet people outside of your closed circle in this world is an immensely powerful thing” summed up the intentions behind the application, “So we are going to keep focusing on bringing people together. That’s why we’re here. That is why all of us at Tinder work so hard.” Tinder also hit back at the journalistic value of the article,” If you want to try to tear us down with one-sided journalism, well, that’s your prerogative.” Offering the comment, “Instead, your article took an incredibly biased view, which is disappointing.” Finally, they concluded, “But it’s not going to dissuade us from building something that is changing the world. #GenerationTinder” Tinder is available on your mobile and tablet, links directly with your Facebook profile, and is FREE.

AIRPORT INFO AT HAND Flight Info, Wi/Fi and Discounts you’ll Actually Use!

Having information to hand is crucial when travel-

ling, especially in busy centres such as airports, but the

good news is that there are lots of apps available to

make your transport transition easier, and this week we are looking at one which offers access to free Wi-Fi, savings on food and shopping, and the all important departure and arrival times, and it´s free. FLIO - The global airport app created by Air Media Services is available to download in the iTunes store and is now live for European airports. The app boasts instant Wi-Fi, saying that you will never fill out a sign-up form again. Flio saves your details and does it all behind the scenes. It connects you with the official free Wi-Fi and gets you online in seconds. Discounts you’ll actually use, with huge savings on food and drink and duty-free shopping. The app also claims to help you find things faster. Need a place to charge your laptop? Something to amuse the kids? The quickest route from bathroom to boarding gate? Flio has the answers, it says. It is a relatively new app in Europe and so does not have an abundance of reviews yet. It has had good feedback from the other side of the globe though, so it looks positive. It´s certainly worth a try if you´re about to

travel, and it´s free so there´s nothing to lose, just make sure you add your

review in the app store to help others decide whether it´s useful or not.

Strawberry & Cream Pita

Ingredients 3 T cream cheese, low fat, softened, 1 punit of strawberries, sliced, 1 whole wheat pita bread, 1 sprig fresh mint. Directions Cut pita bread in half. Gently open pocket. Combine cream cheese with 1/4 cup of the strawberries, mashing the berries as you mix. Spread half of mixture inside each half of the pita. Fill with remaining strawberries. Heat a cast iron pan or skillet to warm. Spray sandwich with nonstick spray and grill both sides until golden. Enjoy warm. Garnish with mint. Mousse a la Banana 2 tablespoons milk 4 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 medium banana, cut in quarters 1 cup plain low fat yogurt 8 1/4-inch banana slices Directions Place milk, sugar, vanilla, and banana in blender. Red pepper, walnut and pomegranate salsa recipe Here, Castello’s Tickler Cheddar is the star of the show, and is ready to be complemented with a sweet and sour red pepper, walnut and pomegranate salsa. To round off this addictive combination, try roasted beetroot for earthy sweetness, quail eggs for softness and spicy tomato chutney for some kick. For crunchiness, serve with celery, rye crackers or a toasted baguette. Partner this healthy vegetarian feast with a mixture of beetroot and pomegranate juice that will stay in tune with the flavours. Red pepper, walnut and pomegranate salsa.

Once the peppers are roasted, this salsa takes no time to prepare. You can roast them in advance or buy ready roasted peppers (Piquillo peppers work best). 5 small red peppers (750g), 2 tablespoons olive oil. Seasoning, ¼ teaspoon cumin, 45g walnuts, finely crushed, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses. Preheat the grill to maximum. Halve, core and seed the peppers. Lay them on a baking tray lined with foil, brush with oil and grill for 25 to 30 minutes until the skins are well charred. Place the charred peppers in a bowl

and cover with plastic film. Leave to cool. When the peppers are cool enough to handle, peel off the charred skin and chop into 3cm strips. Season with salt, pepper and cumin then add the walnuts, lemon juice, pomegranate molasses and what is left of the olive oil and toss well. Spoon some salsa on a cracker or toasted baguette and top with cheddar. Kampot pepper is among the world’s best

Some experts say it tastes of lime blossom, others detect jasmine, mint or eucalyptus; they all agree, though, that pepper from Kampot, south-east Cambodia, is one of the world’s best. But it was nearly lost for ever: in the 1970s, the Khmer Rouge ordered that Cambodia’s pepper vines be grubbed up and replaced with rice paddies. However, some farmers in the Kampot province kept alive the skills and traditions of pepper cultivation and in the 1990s started producing small amounts in the rainy, quartz-rich hillsides that run down to the Gulf of Thailand. It was well received, and this year the world price of Kampot pepper rose to an all-time high – with farmers saying they’re still only produc-

ing about 30% of demand. The best are cultivated using organic methods, with crab shells as fertiliser to nurture the climbing stems, and fallen branches as supports. Kampot pepper goes well with fish and shellfish, and is available by mail order in black, white or pink, but in Cambodia you can eat fresh green peppercorns still on their edible stalks: they’re served all over the country but are at their best in their home province. The seaside town of Kep, near the Vietnamese border, is the crab capital of south-east Asia, and restaurants in its seafront crab market – a collection of stilted shacks – sell fried, freshly caught crab with Kampot pepper. That’s a world-class treat for just £2-3.

Are the British really giving up tea? The idea of ditching the afternoon cuppa really takes the biscuit

I have a plan, for when I’m old and possibly slightly senile, and can live in whatever odd and eccentric manner that I choose. It is this: that I will eat only two meals a day: breakfast and afternoon tea. Both meals can include almost anything, and both become

deliciously indulgent when extended beyond the usual slice of toast or rich tea biscuit. But I may have to bring my plan forward by a few years, for a new study has found that the habit of ingesting a small spot of something at around 4pm is

falling by the wayside as we’re all getting healthier. No longer are we enjoying a nice cuppa and something to dunk in it to counter that mid-afternoon slump; sales of tea have fallen by almost a quarter over the past five years, and biscuit consumption is down by 10 per cent. Instead, apparently, we are more likely to reach for the bottled water, and nibble on a piece of fruit, or a handful of nuts. Well, more fool us I say. Rather than cutting down on our afternoon indulgence, we should be pushing the boat out. Mumsnet may be obsessed with

whether politicians favour a Jaffa Cake or a McVitie’s dark chocolate digestive, but as far as I’m concerned, they’re missing the point. Because the beauty of afternoon tea lies in its glorious richness of opportunity. If you must you have a nut, or a biscuit or two. But far better to choose a scone, slathered with butter, jam and cream. Or a nice slice of Victoria sponge. Too sugary? Never fear. There’s little that can beat a freshly made egg sarnie, complete with a few wisps of cress, a buttery ham and mustard bun or a delicate smoked salmon triangle of an afternoon. At my sister’s wedding last weekend, we celebrated with a proper tea: cake stands piled with sandwiches, followed by plate upon plate of beautifully p r e sente d delicacies, from fondant fancies to fruit cake, all washed down with gallons of Earl Grey served in the best china cups. Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who is widely credited with coming up with the notion of afternoon tea in the 1800s, would have been

proud – there was plenty there to stand up to “that sinking feeling” she complained of during the late afternoon, for which she required something small to satisfy her hunger and keep her propped up. For surely this is the

great benefit of this most magnificent of British traditions: the way that afternoon tea carries one through the post-lunch hours. The Americans don’t do tea, but they eat their dinner at 6pm; those of us in Britain for whom the evening meal falls closer to 8pm, need a little smackerel of something, as Winnie the Pooh might have put it, to keep us going until supper.

Bring it all back I say. Let’s return to the days when tea rooms were all the rage; when meeting your friends for a cup of something was the thing to do. I’m baffled by the news that tea-drinking has “a rather uninspiring image” among the younger generation, when there are so many opportunities, f r o m fancy china to complicated blends, to introduce a certain hip glamour. As for the saddening news that even pensioners are eschewing a slice of cake thanks to warnings about obesity, why don’t we all dust off our dancing shoes and embrace a return to the tea dance, to burn off the calories? And now, if you must excuse me, it’s getting on for 4pm. Kettle and scones call.

Can high-intensity exercise really enough to get fit? Experts now believe that the smart way to condition your body is to do shorter, more intensive bursts of exercise

Too busy to get fit? No longer an excuse. The world of workouts is moving to ever-shorter bursts of activity. The New York Times recently released a sevenminute workout app based on research showing the benefit of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), while the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

found that 20 minutes of an intense workout burned an average of 15 calories per minute – twice the amount used on a long run. Typically, HIIT involves 60 seconds of exercise near your peak ability, followed by a recovery period of the same amount, repeated for 20 minutes, three times a week. Your peak ability is around 80 to 90% of your

maximum heart rate. Roughly, that involves subtracting your age from 220, but it’s more reliable to use your “rate of perceived exertion”. If six is sitting on a chair calmly and 20 is “I can’t do any more”, you should pitch yourself at no more than 18. You can do HIIT on a bike, running, swimming, on gym equipment like a cross trainer, or by sprinting up and down the stairs. So has HIIT really replaced a gentle jog around the block?

The solution It may seem counterintuitive, indeed even dangerous, to start exercising as hard as you can, but research trials have included couch potatoes and overweight and obese people. HIIT has been shown to improve blood glucose levels in the latter group, and a review of people with heart disease who tried HIIT

found improvements in their heart function, and also that they even enjoyed it. Most recently, people with joint pains from arthritis have been found to benefit from high-intensity spinning. The studies on people with heart or other medical conditions have been carried out under close medical supervision, and if you or your family have a history of heart or other diseases you should ask your doctor to see if HIIT is right for you. Maureen MacDonald, an associate professor of kinesiology at McMaster University says you mustn’t go from high impact to a hard stop – keep your legs

moving slowly in between the bursts. She says this avoids blood pooling in the big muscles in your bottom and legs and stops you feeling dizzy. She recommends 10 sets of one-minute highintensity and one minute resting for two periods of 20 minutes a week, and says people seem to enjoy this

regime more than any other. The American College of Sports Medicine claims HIIT continues to burn more calories after the workout than traditional exercise. Exercise that is shorter, enjoyable and burns more calories? Of course you should try it – but be sensible.

High blood pressure is not a disease

Have you come to believe like many people that high blood pressure is a disease rather than a sign of a disease? Yes, high blood pres-

Q A

sure is only a sign suggesting that something isn´t right in the body. Treating high blood pressure as a disease is no different from treating a

symptom such as cough as a disease. But we can all agree that signs and symptoms of diseases are not actual diseases, rather they

are indications of diseases. Cough can be triggered by a number of illnesses – chest infections, heart disease, allergies, irritation etc., and the treatment given depends on the cause. If the cough is due to infections, antibiotics are prescribed, and if due to heart disease, the appropriate therapy is given to alleviate the cough. Now imagine if cough was regarded as a disease and treated with cough suppressants to suppress the cough, rather than treating the cause. You can see the danger of such a practice. Surely, the cough will be treated, but the cause of the cough is left to rage on. This is no different from treating someone with high blood pressure with blood pressure medications. Yes your blood pressure will come down, but the cause of the high blood pressure still remains, and over time this

will result in more serious and perhaps irreversible complications. So why do doctors prescribe blood pressure lowering medicat i o n s , rather t h a n treat t h e cause? Well the aim of public hospitals especially in today´s economy is to save money. It is so much cheaper to prescribe blood pressure medications than to carry out extensive tests to determine the cause. Of course blood tests and X-rays are usually carried out however these tests are very basic

and don´t reveal very much. High blood pressure can be caused by a number of problems – inflammation of the arteries, kidney diseases, hormonal problems, as well as dietary and environmental causes. The good news is that these p r o b lems can b e reversed if detected early. At MedB clinic, we carryout a full body diagnostic scan to pinpoint the cause of an illness. FOR A FULL BODY SCAN CALL MEDB CLINIC: 965071745, 966189074.

Dear Doctor, 2 years ago I was told my prostate gland was enlarged and when my PSA readings were done, it came to 11.3. I was scheduled for repeat PSA readings and further examinations. My last rectal exam showed that my prostate was normal in shape and the enlargement had reduced, while my PSA readings have come down to 7.4. Nevertheless my doctor wants me do carryout a biopsy which quite frankly I don´t intend to. What should I do?

Unfortunately there is so much misunderstanding about the meaning of the PSA test, even among doctors and specialists. According to the inventor of the PSA test, Dr Albin, it was never designed to screen for prostate diseases, but to see how men who had already been diagnosed with prostate cancer, responded to treatment. A normal prostate gland

starts to increase in size around the age of 45 in most men, and in many this enlargement does not cause any noticeable problems with urine flow. As the urethra runs through the prostate gland, any problems with the prostate will affect the flow of urine. In other men, the prostate gland may become excessively enlarged, leading to a condition known as benign hyperplastic hypertrophy – BPH. Although Prostate enlargement is a normal occurrence in men, there are certain conditions

that contribute to its excessive growth. The prostate gland needs more zinc than any other organ and in the body, and zinc is necessary to keep it healthy. A deficiency of zinc is associated with excessive enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate gland is also sensitive to the effects of foreign particles such as microorganism and toxins that cause inflammation or prostatitis. Scans carried out at MedB clinic shows that viruses such as cytomegalovirus is a com-

mon cause of prostatitis. Both prostatitis and an enlarged prostate, will give rise to a high PSA levels. The acceptable range of normal PSA is 0- 4ng/ml, but many clinicians believe this to be a very narrow range that does not take into consideration the unstable nature of the prostate gland. Today, a growing number of urologists will ignore prostate readings even up to 40 ng/ml, unless associated with symptoms. The symptoms of prostatitis or enlarged prostate are straining while passing urine, poor urine flow, and feeling of not properly emptying the bladder. Men will normally experience these problems occasionally, but they should be taken seriously if they persist. Zinc is a cheap and effective way to keep the prostate gland healthy. The best form of zinc is zinc picolinate. However zinc is a

micronutrient and should never be taken in high doses. Other important agents for the prostate are saw palmetto, Pygeum africanum, green tea extract. Prostate cancer is the main worry for most men, however of the 10% of men that develop prostate cancer, less than 1 in 100 of this number will succumb to the disease. Biopsies are associated with severe and com-

mon side effects such as erectile dysfunction, incontinence and chronic infections. Most biopsies are usually negative and many doctors are now reluctant to recommend biopsies. The diagnostics performed at MedB clinic is able to detect the different forms of prostate diseases. To book an appointment for a full body scan Call 965071745.

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses. ADVICE: Sam wanted to know more about the Chromecast we reviewed in our latest newsletter

Q A

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Joya wanted to know if she was going to be forced to upgrade to Windows 10

Q

Hi Richard, I have just read about the Chromecast on your latest newsletter and it looks good. I was thinking of getting one for my daughter to start with as we are buy. Hi Richard, I have read your blog on installing Windows 10 & I have the icon on ing her a TV. She loves watching Youtube videos on her iPod, can she view these HP computer purchased from you last year, however, as you may remember I use logmein for free? Thanks Sam for work. I have read on the internet that LMI does not work (yet?) with 10, also have AVG message that It might need reinstalling. This is busiest time of year for me and can't afford not to able to connect to UK - nor do I want all the hassle at mo' as am perfectly happy with Hi Sam, yep with this connected to her TV she will be able to Chromecast anything how things work now - can I just ignore this here and stay with Win7 prof or will 10 download from YouTube on her iPad straight onto the TV.Windows. automatically? Also it would presumable mean downloading it to all computers in office in UK, what would you advise? MalwareBytes will help keep malware away.

A

Hi Joya, Windows 10 will only download and install if you have requested it to do so by entering your email address. You would not need to install Windows 10 on the computers in the UK in order to access them via log me in but of course you shouldn’t upgrade if you know that critical software that you use is incompatible with it.

GOLF’S SHAMEFUL SILENCE

With the recent accusations of mass drug taking being thrown about in the world of athletics, which has even spread to the London Marathon, it does lend the question as to why golf doesn’t comply with the World Anti-Doping Agency Standards (WADA)? What have the sport’s governing bodies and tours got to be afraid of? Random Olympic tests International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, attacked the PGA for a lack of transparency in anti- doping policy, and insisted that golfers competing in the Olympics will have to be WADA compliant. In response, golf did its usual 'uncomfortable-foot-shufflingstaring-at-the-floor-and-hoping-the-nasty-interfering-people-would-go-away-and-kind-

ly-mind-their-own-businessthis-is-golf!' act. What Peter Dawson said Peter Dawson, the outgoing chief executive of the R&A, said during the last Open at St. Andrews that golf could not be complacent regarding anti-doping but refused to reveal how many tests would be taking place at The Open. “I would certainly urge that golf moves towards being WADA compliant at all times and right across the world, and I think the game of golf is working towards that,” said Dawson. “That said, it’s still my belief that we don’t have a major drug problem of any kind in the game of golf, but we certainly can’t afford to be complacent.” What Gary Player said While the R&A and the PGA might pussy foot around the subject, a legend of the

game is not so shy. Gary Player recently claimed that he personally knows that golfers are using drugs. Cocaine might go on behind closed doors and so what? The problem is, apparently, steroid abuse. "Whether it's HGH, whether it's creatine or whether it's steroids, I know for a fact that some golfers are doing it," Player said. Asked how he knew for certain, he said one golfer told him. "I took an oath prior to him telling me — I won't tell you where — but he told me what he did, and I could see this massive change in him," Player said. "And somebody else told me something, that I also promised I wouldn't tell, that verified others had done it." The cryptic accusation put the Royal & Ancient Golf Club on the defensive over why it did not have drug testing at the recent Open, with Peter Dawson being asked whether he was concerned that its winner could be using steroids. Dawson said, "One thing I do know is that we're not drug testing here at the Open championship this week, so just how that would be identified, I'm not sure." MY OPINION It’s pretty reserved stuff from the R&A and PGA as usual, but let's look at the reality. Not so long ago a top ten golfer failed his third drug test in five years, including two for cocaine. If Dustin Johnson had won the Open,

what were we supposed to do? Applaud a great athlete for overcoming unfortunate circumstances, or turn our backs on the sport for having buried its head in the sand in the face of the kind of issues that get other sports stars lengthy, if not lifetime bans? We certainly got no guidance from the R&A or the PGA as to what 'golf' thought of such matters. How can we take golf bosses like Peter Dawson or Tim Finchem seriously when they lock themselves in back rooms, slap each other on the back and brush anything unpleasant under the carpet – after all, there's money to be made from the top golf stars. Let the baby have its bottle, no one will ever know! Compared to other sports' governing bodies, this comes across as pretty spineless stuff. The R&A and the PGA clearly don't need the aggravation of acknowledging the fact that their charges are as normal and susceptible to 'mistakes' as any other sport's stars (love that word – like 'I mistakenly injected myself with drugs instead of not injecting myself with drugs'). And all this at a time when other governing bodies – cycling, athletics etc – are perpetually cleaning up the road kill of drug-related incidents they are forced to make public in their sports. Golf has to man up. Maybe golf doesn't have a big problem. But that's the problem isn't it? The likes of Finchem and Dawson can interpret what 'big' really means any way they like. You can't make the level of intent/impact of the use of drugs in sport subjective. Either you took the drugs or you didn't. It can't be one rule for golf and one for everyone else. Personally, I couldn't give a proverbial if Dustin Johnson was snorting his way from Columbia to Bolivia, as the destruction of his Septum is his own concern, and liberal use of cocaine is hardly going to help his game. What he does in private is none of my business and hardly unusual for a wealthy young man in

his 20s, surrounded by fixers, well-wishers, hangers-on and partying types. If anything, it made a lot of people think golfers weren't quite as banal as they thought. The problem is that, if it was any other sport, football for example, he would have been pilloried and banned. Golf has scrupulously cultivated the same code of silence with which it once helped to cover up Tiger's cocktail waitress plundering. When Johnson failed to defend his title at the World Golf Championship in Shanghai last November, following all the hullabaloo about his 'off-course issues',

you couldn't get a word out of anyone from the PGA about where he was and why he wasn't where he was supposed to be. . Only three players have been suspended under the anti-doping policy. The most recent was Scott Stallings, who told the tour he was unaware that an over-thecounter drug he was taking was on the banned substance list. Stalling received a three-month suspension. The other two (Bhavik Patel and Doug Barron) were out for one year. The tour did not explain the difference. Clear as mud. Just the way they like it.

Pluck of the Irish

Shane Lowry of Ireland fired a final round of 66 to secure the biggest win of his career at the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone CC in Ohio. The Irishman played an error-free round on Sunday to catch and pass overnight leaders Jim Furyk and Justin Rose. With the victory, Lowry has moved into the top-20 on the Official World Golf Ranking and to fourth place on the 2015 Race to Dubai. In an invitational event featuring the best players in world golf, this could be a life-changing victory for the young Irishman. “To shoot 11 under par on this golf course just shows a lot about my game, that it is good enough to compete at any level.” Lowry began the final round two shots behind 54hole leaders Justin Rose

and Jim Furyk but he erased that deficit with two birdies in his first eight holes. When he birdied the 10th, he took a two shot lead over the pack as both Furyk and Rose had stumbled. In the end it was Bubba Watson who pushed Lowry closest and got within one with a birdie on the 17th. But the Irishman held firm and he finished with a birdie on the home hole to take the title by two shots with Watson alone in second. It was a pretty incredible closing birdie for Lowry as he fired his approach to the 18th through a tree and stopped his ball just 10 feet from the cup. Lowry now went into the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin (which of course started yesterday), full of confidence that he can compete with, and beat, the top players in the world.

TITTER ON THE TEE

During a lady's medical examination, the doctor says: "Your heart, lungs, pulse and blood pressure are all fine. Now let me see the bit that gets you ladies into all kinds of trouble." The lady starts taking off her underwear but is interrupted by the doctor. "No! No! Don't remove your clothes... Just stick out your tongue!"

In playing a chip shot, a player’s club strikes the ground several inches behind the ball and does not come into contact with the ball. However, the ground is struck with enough force to cause the ball to move. The player’s club continues and strikes the ball while it is moving. What is the ruling? A: Player replaces the ball and plays the shot gain. B: The player counts his stroke and adds a penalty stoke. C: Player only counts the stroke when the club hits the ball

ANSWER B: The player must count his stroke and add a penalty stroke under Rule 14-4. Even though the club itself did not initially strike the ball, the ball was put into motion due to the stroke

TORRY’S FINAL COUNTDOWN

Two more signings pushed CD Torrevieja towards their full squad quota for the forthcoming season with goalkeeper Miguel and Quintero putting pen to paper. Miguel has featured in a couple of preseason friendlies, keeping a clean sheet after his introduction at half time against Hercules in last Friday night’s fine goalless draw at the Vicente Garcia Stadium (Action shot showing Adrian

Banderas dispossessing the Hercules keeper). Quintero led Jumilla to promotion to 2B in the summer and has been enticed to join the Salineros to repeat the feat. He played 36 times last season for Jumilla, netting four times, a fair return for a strong central defender. He was instrumental in Jumilla winning group 10 last term and securing their place in 2B with a first time 5-4 winning aggregate

score. Ironically, Quintero (pictured in blue playing for Jumilla) did not feature in the recent friendly between Torry and Jumilla which ended 2-2. Torrevieja finish off their pre-season fixtures tomorrow evening (Saturday at 7.00pm) away to third division Mar Menor, who play their games at the compact Pitin stadium in San Javier, which has a three thousand spectator capacity. With the league programme kicking off the following weekend, manager Pedreño will by then know exactly how he intends to line up in Ontinyent. Central defender Martin remains side-lined with a hamstring worry, whilst fans favourite Rafa Gomez seems to have done a disappearing act that Paul Daniels and Tommy Cooper would have been proud of! After starring in a couple of friendly games, including captaining the side against Elche, Rafa did not turn up for training and trying to arrange to even talk to him on the

phone has achieved a degree of difficulty akin to gaining an audience with the Pope. Rafa was the team’s choice as the best player for last season as well as finishing up as the side’s top scorer, so it is something of an understatement to suggest that his departure is something of a blow! Next week the club will hold the draw at the ground to select from the "hat" the winning business that will have their name and number on the team shirts all this season. Companies have to buy two season tickets at a cost of 100 euros each and they then are put automatically in the draw. These companies are free to raffle off their two season tickets and recoup the cost, giving themselves an absolutely golden chance to land this prestigious prize. With less than a dozen participants to date involved, the odds are also looking good for those who have supported the club in this manner. There is still time for local

PIRATES CONQUERED

TORREVIEJA CC 95 for 9 Despite fielding five juniors, Torrevieja CC got a fine home win over top of the table Pinatar Pirates last weekend. The visitors won the toss and put Torrevieja into bat who found life difficult against some accurate bowling, struggling to 7 for 1 after 7 overs. Torrevieja were then reduced to 15 for 3 after a very toiling 16 overs, but then Jahid Ullah and Michael Wareing steadied things somewhat and pushed the score up to 45, with Jahid finishing with 18. Junior players Vishav Thakur (26) and Tommy Knowles (5) put together a

stand of 41 before both were out in the last over with Torrevieja making 95 for 9. Pinatar bowlers Lee Brown, Akash Panchall, and Vikash Singh finished with two wickets each. Pinatar found batting just as difficult and although they pushed up the run rate, the fall of wickets increased as well. Only Akash Panchall reached double figures (38) against some excellent bowling from Torrevieja led by their man of the match, Michael Wareing(pictured getting his award), who took 5 for 27 off his 10 overs, backed up by good spells

TBILISI THRILLER

Pedro (pictured celebrating) scored an extra-time winner as Barcelona won the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday night for a recordequalling fifth time after a nine-goal thriller in Tbilisi. Europa League winners Sevilla surprised the Champions League holders when Ever Banega netted a delightful free-kick. Lionel Messi scored two sublime free-kicks to put Barca 2-1 ahead before Rafinha and Luis Suarez made it 4-1. Jose Antonio Reyes, a Kevin Gameiro penalty and a Yevhen Konoplyanka goal forced extra time before

Pedro struck in what might have been his final appearance for Barcelona after the club’s technical secretary, Robert Fernandez, claimed he wanted to leave. The 28-year-old player has been linked with Manchester United as the Premier League side look to replace Angel Di Maria. Asked if he wanted to leave Barcelona, he said on Tuesday night after the Supercup victory: "The answer is no. But it is a difficult, complicated situation. When you know you may leave, it is difficult." Pedro said the issue

around his future was "not for money" but about "minutes" on the pitch, adding he had a "lot of anger" at not starting the Super Cup fixture. But he criticised Fernandez for "some very unfortunate declarations". "I've not said what Robert's said, or at least not how I said it," Pedro told a Spanish broadcaster after the match. Barcelona's first success in the Supercup since 2011 means they join Italian side AC Milan in winning it five times. Barca's triumph means they have now won four trophies this year after

winning the treble last season. They remain on course to emulate the recordbreaking feat of Pep Guardiola's side in 2009 when they won all six trophies available to them. Barca can secure a fifth trophy of the calendar year when they face Athletic Bilbao in the two-legged Spanish Super Cup, the first leg of which is tonight(Friday) with the return at the Nou Camp next Monday. As European champions, they will also compete in the 2015 Fifa Club World Cup in Japan in December.

MONEY TALKS

The summer saga of whether Sergio Ramos will quit Real Madrid for Manchester United appears to be over with the 29 year old Spanish international defender set to put pen to paper on a massive deal worth around 350 thousand euros a week! The World Cup winner and double European champion – was a target for United earlier in the summer when it seemed

he would not agree new terms at the Bernabeu, but he’s had a change of heart and will sign a deal that will keep him at Real until 2020, which realistically means that Ramos will spend of his top flight career there. Ramos had two years to run on his previous deal and it is thought he would have collected around 240 thousand euros a week had he moved to Old Trafford.

FROOME HITS TORRY SIGNED ON THE LINE

Cycle fans in the Costa Blanca area will be in for a treat later this month as twice-Tour de France, Chris Froome has confirmed that he will be taking in the Vuelta a Espana, the third and final Grand Tour of 2015 which starts late this month. The race features a stage that starts in Torrevieja and goes through to the Northern Costa Blanca on the ninth stage on Sunday August 30th. That is on the back of

a stage taking in inland Murcia the previous day. The Team Sky rider, 30, became the first Briton to win the Tour twice at the end of July. Here in Spain, he will attempt to become only the 10th cyclist to win two Grand Tours in one season. Froome will join Nairo Quintana of Colombia and Italian Vincenzo Nibali in a strong Vuelta field. Quintana finished second behind Froome in Paris this year, Nibali was the Tour champion in 2014, while American racer Tejay van Garderen will also compete. The race starts on the Costa del Sol in Puerto Banus on Saturday, August 22nd and finishes three weeks later in Madrid on September 13th. A Grand Tour refers to one of the three major European professional cycling stage races - the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana. The last man to win two in a season was Spain’s Alberto Contador, who won the Giro and Vuelta in 2008. Meanwhile Chris Froome

has urged athletics to follow cycling's lead and invest a lot more money in anti-doping. Cycling's problems with drugs are well documented but the sport's blackest days appear to be behind it. But the ongoing doping allegations in athletics threaten to overshadow this month's World Championships in Beijing. "From what I understand, the testing hasn't been at the level that it is in cycling," Froome told BBC Sport. He said the International Cycling Union (UCI) spends about four times what the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) does on testing. "It is going to have to invest a lot more heavily in anti-doping," he added. "That would be a step in the right direction." The 30-year-old Briton revealed that he had been tested at his Monaco apartment on Sunday night and had no problem with being woken up at 3am by testers, if that is what it takes to assure fans he is clean.

CD Montesinos, who start their season on the weekend of September 19th/20th have arranged a series of friendly matches, starting on Friday August 21st away to U.D. Ilicitana, followed by trips to E.D.M. Redovan on Saturday August 20th, and then at Bigastro the following Saturday. The only home fixture to have been

arranged so far is against Albaterense C.F. on Thursday September 10th. The Valencian FA have not yet, as The Courier went to press, released the fixture list for the new season, and there has not been any news from the club over player retentions or departures following the appointment of new manager, Roberto Cases Hernandez.

MONTE’S BUILD UP

Despite going through an insolvency process and with a new boardroom team being set up, Elche at have managed to formally sign two defenders, which The Courier profiled in last week’s edition. Hugo Alvarez (on the left) and Isidoro were officially presented at the club on Monday, with the Ilicitanos having a maximum wage cap of 65 thousand euros per annum for any player. A third player, 22-year-old midfielder, Jose Antonio Delgado, known as Nono, faced the press on Tuesday, joining the club from Real Betis. Then on Wednesday, the club announced the formal signing of 30-year-old central defender, Armando Lozano Sánchez, known as Armando, who played Major League Soccer in the States for the New York Red Bulls.

Prior to that, he played for Cordoba, and further back for clubs including Cartagena, Malaga, and Barcelona B. This Saturday, Elche’s pre-season build up continues as they entertain old rivals Almeria for the Festa d'Elx trophy(kick-off 8.00pm), with both sides already drawn against each other next month in the Copa del Rey.

AROUND THE BLOCK CD Torrevieja have signed the experienced central defender Ricardo Cavas (pictured) in time for the new season. He joins the club from Novelda, and his playing record includes lining up for Logroñes, Español, Alicante, Elche and Badajoz. Cavas the first half of Wednesday’s friendly at CD Thader, which Torrevieja won two-one, with all the goals coming in the first period of play, as Dani Lucas put Thader in the lead, with Brani and Cesar getting the two strikes for the visitors.

ONE YEAR ON... I LIKE LOUIS!

I’m beginning to like Louis van Gaal. Sure, you could call him arrogant and a few other names, but I think he’s got to the age and time of life where he doesn’t really give a monkey’s about what people think: ‘Bin there, done it, won it, got the coiffured wig (it’s gonna lift off one day, I swear). Last week when asked the golden goalie gaff question about dithering David (de Gea), LVG simply shrugged and said, no doubt truthfully, ‘I don’t know…’ That master of mumble, Mourinho would have given the impertinent interviewer a mouthful and in replying, no doubt have had a swipe at somebody. Most managers would prevaricate but not our Louis. He let slip recently that he’s half-promised his missus to pack it all up ‘next year’ or when he finishes with United to enjoy their later years. Cool call, lofty Louis. In these uncertain days is that likely to happen soon? Well, no it would seem as van Gaal delivers, his way. Quite simply, last season he did what was asked of him –

he stopped the rot after the other David, poor old Moyesy got the bullet for dropping Fergie’s champions from first to seventh in the no-prisoners-taken prestigious Premier League. The big Dutchman’s brief was also to get United back into Europe: Champions League no less, not that tedious Europa Cup that even West Ham got dumped out of early doors last week. And after a very strange season by United’s sky-high standards, somehow Louis landed it, and gave United their respectability back amongst the big boys. Then time for a sort-out, LVG style. In contrast to Saturday’s low key 1 – 0 win over Spurs, just 12 months ago United lost 2 – 1 to effervescent Swansea on the first day amid nightmares at the Theatre of Dreams. That losing team has been changed out of sight from last weekend’s line-up, this is van Gaal’s grafting guys now. There is no way the Dutchman can be accused of standing still, as only four players played in both

games: Rooney, Smalling, Young, and Mata. Louis has lashed out more than £220m in just over 14 months in charge, and seems to be unconcerned by ignoring his, and United's long-held reputation for producing talent from within. Not one home-grown player played against Tottenham and that is the first time in 23 years it has happened. The atmospherically-high flyers and mercenaries, the Falcaos and the Di Marias have gone. United have bought ‘emselves some much-needed midfield steel in Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin, plus some new exciting class upfront in Memphis Depay and a competent, versatile central defender in Matteo Darmian. Interestingly three matchbanned Marouane Fellaini has yet to return, the Belgian was doing well

FA time in pointless protests? Then there’s the nasty little spat with Mourinho humiliating and

names wrong or a muzzle applied when he got involved in an unseemly spat with the then West Ham boss Sam Allardyce, all over a tedious ‘long ball’ issue whilst waving written ‘evidence’ to a disinterested, but amused British media. Everyone loves a winner: Louis van Gaal’s management statistics show an impressive 60.9% win ratio during a long career of 842 games. The 64 year-old’s Man United ratio today lags behind at present at 52.3% over 42 games: but suddenly this is LVG’s team now, not the one he inherited. Just like the de Gea situation, there seems to be a few other issues at Old Trafford that lofty Louis doesn’t know what to do about - but refreshingly admits it. Great stuff - and it will be a exciting ride at Old Trafford – go, Louis!

Unappealing Chelsea: firstly, what was the point of contesting Courtois’ red card? Is this the new ‘antieverything’ policy from day one, epitomised by wingeing (and rightly booked himself) captain John Terry? If the referee, aided later by conclusive TV evidence got the split second decision ‘spot on’ (source MOTD’s pundits) why isn’t that good enough for Chelsea, wasting more

again in favour at the end of last season. One of the advantages Louis van Gaal enjoys over his ill-fated predecessor is that he has the respect of his players, largely because of his record. The previous Netherlands coach has won big things in his time at club level, managed his country at World Cup finals (Holland came third in the last World Cup) spent massive amounts of money in his time, and worked with the biggest players in the game. He is not the fall-guy, the figure of fun that Moyes was fast becoming, and it is clear he answers to no-one at Old Trafford. This authority, however is coupled with a dangerous, but highly amusing tendency to ‘busk it’ at interviews. Louis-the-Lip could do with an aide to prompt him, like when he initially got players’

banning the club’s lady doctor Eva Carneiro from the bench, all because she ran to aid ‘tired’ Hazard, thus temporarily reducing the Blues to nine men. Monster mouth’s savage public rebuke does hIm and the club no favours – and why was Hazard in that state in the first game of the season anyway? Mourinho, hellbent as ever in alienating his own fans as well as the neutral. Typical – and it looks like we’ve got four more years of him ‘til 2019. Mind you, you never know, Abramovich didn’t look happy either, perhaps they’ll fall out again.

LONG D N E K E E W Night

Friday ! e u g a e L r e Premi

The weekend starts, somewhat surprisingly tonight at Villa Park: fresh from ruining Bournemouth’s Premier League debut the Villains entertain bagsof-money Man Utd. Both teams won 1 – 0 to get off to a welcome, if unconvincing start, so this result is key. The Saturday early-doors kick off sees a Sarf coast special as Southampton take on Everton. At 3pm UK (4pm here), two of last weekend’s losers Sunderland and Norwich are locked together to illuminate the Stadium of Light. Swansea entertaining Newcastle looks another belter, both featured in exhilarating 2 – 2 draws in their first matches. Tottenham v Stoke: both opening losers, albeit both 1 – 0, meaning everything to play for, w h o d a r e s lose, and Stoke

now have new £12m Inter Milan winger Xherdan Shaqiri. Watford v West Brom is anyone’ s guess, perhaps with the Baggies new striker from Zenit St Petersburg, Salomon Rondon for a record £12m. The unexpected top of the table clash is at West Ham, where lively Leicester come to the capital. Leicester scored four and looked very good against Sunderland – who doesn’t – but as a Forest supporter I still reserve the Red right to be right about Ranieri. Super Sunday sees an early, exciting capital clash: Crystal Palace at home to Ceched-back Arsenal (must-do-better). Will prodigal Pardew push the Eagles to new heights in the Prem? The Man City/Chelsea clash is at tea-time but we will have to wait until Monday night to see if Liverpool’s win over Stoke was a fluke, as n e w b i e s Bournemouth step into the lion’s den at the Anfield Coliseum, w h e r e Christian Benteke and his f e l l o w blood-red gladiators await.

Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi, a 27-year-old Argentinan stopper would cost £35m. A potential obstacle to Van Gaal is their noisy neighbour, Man City. A club with defensive issues of their own, are also keen on Otamendi, and they’d happily offer £36m - £49m for him just to prolong LVG’s discomfort.

THAT’S NOT IN THE SCRIPT!

Fortunately football doesn’t always follow the rules - that’s why we like it - but last weekend, the first of the new season confounded us all. By Sunday close of play (cricketing term, Aussies beware) we ended up with Leicester top and Arsenal bottom. Champions Chelsea looked anything but, Bournemouth’s debut was brought back down to planet earth by Villains, as-woz newbies Norwich, nuked by pulsating Palace. Watford done well though, 2 -2 against Everton. Liverpool reversed the hearse at Stoke to narrowly win and gain revenge, but Man United remembered and carried on from last year by winning ugly against Spurs. Then came Monday night: West Brom v Man City at the Hawthorns. Given the above, a tough Tony Pulis-type Baggies should be a match for slacking City-last-timeout, eh? A disappointing Raheem Sterling, sent off or substituted,

with City playing as though they’d never been introduced? Well, none of that happened and while West Brom looked a work in progress, City tore ‘em apart 3 – 0 setting the Blues up already as the team to beat this season. Even starting without striker supreme Sergio Aguero, City looked awesome, with Yaya Toure (two quick goals) and David Silva bossing the midfield, complemented by Fernandinho and Jesus Navas. Captain colossus Vincent Kompany (thunderinglyheaded third goal) looked back to his imperious best, alongside the giant Mangala. Sagna and Kolarov look more than capable as full backs, all in front of England’s finest goalkeeper Joe Hart. Upfront, Wifried Bony hasn’t even started yet, no wonder City could afford to let the luckless supersub Edin Dzeko go on loan to Roma. The City subs bench contained Aguero, Nasri, Zabaleta and Demichelis – and apparently £49m Kevin de

Bruyne is on his way to the Blue corner of Manchester – wow! Oh, and that £49m Raheem Sterling… the ex-Liverpool starlet should have scored on his City Prem debut, but the message is clear: the England forward’s speed and skill simply supplies City with another dimension, another string to an already well-armed bow, another poisonously-tipped arrow in the Blue quiver at the exotic Etihad. Which venue brings us nicely to Super Sunday in Manchester. Who’s the visitors? Why only the champions, Chelsea are in town, and the match should provide all the answers to the early-season questions in the all blue clash of the Titans. Smarting anti-officialdom Premier Champs Chelsea with master / miserable / maestro Mourinho taking on formidable, frightening Pellegrini’s powerhouses with their new-season armoury focussed on any opposition: game on!
