THE NIGHT THE RAINS CAME…. ROADS AND CARS IN DOWNPOUR MISERY ALEX TRELINSKI

T

he Vega Baja region, and especially Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, was hit last Saturday night and Sunday morning by huge cloudbursts that formally signalled the end of the long hot summer. Other areas of Spain though fared worse, with three fatalities discovered at the beginning of the week in the southern Andalucia region. The Mastral Project (pictures from their site and that of the Informacion newspaper) recorded falls of up to 78 litres per square metre of overnight rain between Saturday and Sunday at their measuring centre in the Aguas Neuvas area of Torrevieja:- some three times the total amount of rain that has fallen throughout the whole year! The peak of the storm was between 2.00am and 3.00am. During the same period, Rojales regis-

tered 58.8 litres and Orihuela 34.4 litres per square metre, whilst further north, Alicante City in contrast had only 11.8 litres of rain. Road blockages and landslides were reported across the Vega Baja area, with the CV905 route between Torrevieja and Crevillente closed for six hours due to flooding in the city area, as well as fire engines being used to pump out water to keep traffic moving close to the Parque de las Naciones. The sheer force of the water swept away two cars on la Avenida de Roentgen close to the city's Los Locos beach, and motorists were stranded in their vehicles trying to get through parts of the Altos del Limonar urbanisation. On the Orihuela Costa, the underpass from the Town Hall to Playa Flamenca beach was flooded whilst the La Glea walkway at Campoamor beach had to be closed due to flooding. Landslides affected

the CV-950 heading towards Torremendo lake, and also the CV-920 at Benejúzar. The Murcia region's Emergency Co-ordination Centre got over 340 calls about the weather, with localised flooding, as well as 76 roads blocked for a time, with 41 water pumps being used, and 23 people were rescued, in addition to several power cuts plus several road accidents caused by the poor driving conditions. There was a big plus side though as the farmer’s union in the region, Asaja Murcia welcomed the downpours which they said would help all the dried out crops. On Monday evening and Tuesday morning, more rain hit the Costa Blanca, causing the greatest impact in the northern part of the region, with the streets of Altea and Benidorm knee-deep in water. The storms returned

on Tuesday lunchtime and afternoon, with 30 litres of water being dumped on Torrevieja in just 20 minutes, with roads like Calle Rambla Juan Mateo being flooded. The Valencia and Murcia regions got off lightly compared to the southern region of Andalucia that saw three lives lost at the start of the week. A 61-year-old man became the first fatality of the floods after his car was washed away in Polopos-La Mamola on Monday. Later that same day, a man’s body was found in Albuñol in Granada when flood water receded. On Tuesday morning, a third victim was discovered washed up on a beach in Castell de Ferro, on the coast south of Granada. The man in his sixties was thought to have been carried down to the beach by raging flood water.

Valencia's regional government has called on the national administration in Madrid to agree to take on far more refugees from the war-torn Middle East than initial proposed figure of two thousand. The Valencian government says that if every town across its own region housed just one family, then this alone would

account for more than one thousand refugees. Deputy regional president Mònica Oltra, whose Compromis party governs in coalition with the PSOE, says the Comunidad Valenciana and Valencia city will offer its public buildings as accommodation, including local authorityowned empty houses, and universities, particularly halls of residence. "We want to welcome refugees. We want our region to be a welcoming one," Oltra said. The Valencia regional government and the Red Cross plan to ask banks which have repossessed properties they cannot sell to lend these as homes for refugees, and to ask Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to clarify exactly how many he is willing to accept. "We want the number to

be as high as possible – we need to give a lesson in charity to the government, because that's what our people are asking for," added Mònica Oltra. The region has now established a special committee with aid and voluntary agencies to look at what can be done to welcome newcomers to the area. Meanwhile last Monday, Torrevieja’s Green Party mayor, José Manuel Dolon, said that he would be giving over 3,600 euro to the Syrian refugee appeal, which is the money that he was entitled to get for attending council and official meetings since he became mayor in the summer. Dolon added that he approved of the Valencian Government’s stance on opening up a welcome to the refugees across the area.

A 47--old-woman who claimed to be a dentist, when she wasn’t, has been arrested at her Torrevieja home, after one of her patients complained to the Guardia Civil about a painful botch-job. The bogus dentist who was born in Russia but is now a Spanish national, worked at a local dental surgery for a dozen years as an assistant before trying to illegally branch out on her own, picking up unsuspecting customers at her original place of employment. A Russian woman came to the official dental surgery in July and was offered the chance of clandestine treatment by the bogus dentist at her home, which ended up going wrong in a process to extract a nerve ending. The pain continued for a month for the unhappy patient who returned and was told by

the fake practitioner that she needed a "pin" to be put in. The patient had enough and went to get a second opinion at a registered dentist, who told her that no professional dentist would have treated her the way she had been. The unhappy client then twigged that something was badly amiss with her original dentist and made a complaint to the Guardia Civil about her. The Guardia raided the basement of the fake dentist's house and discovered all the equipment, and arrested the woman, making her available to a Torrevieja judge, as well as investigating the extent and numbers of people that she had "treated". She's been charged with practising dentistry illegally and also writing out prescriptions that she did not have the authority to do so.

A 39-year-old Alicante car thief who operated down the coast at San Pedro del Pinatar during the holiday season has a court appearance to look forward to in front of a San Javier judge. He plundered tourist vehicles at car parks at La Llana and Torre Derribada beaches, with the Guardia Civil launching a special operation to catch him in the act.

Surveillance teams found that he only stole in the morning and targeted just one car a day, with the Guardia Civil spotting him sitting in a vehicle, watching tourists arriving in their cars and heading off to the beach. With all the local car parks covered by agents, the thief was caught in the act as he broke into a car and took some items from it.

As the Guardia were about to swoop on him, the man fled to his car and nearly ran over an officer as he sped out of the area and onto the northbound carriageway of the AP-7 motorway, before he was eventually arrested on a whole host of burglary charges, as well as assaulting a police officer. The man has an existing criminal record.

A drone that's being tried out to save swimmers in the Cartagena area was recently pressed into action at La Manga's Zeus beach. A bather had got into trouble 100 metres into the water, and though a lifeguard had

gone to save him, the drone was flown in by Cartagena Civil Protection to provide something that the swimmer could cling onto, before manoeuvring safely back to the beach, with the lifeguard also being present.

650 people in the Murcia region complain every year about prices and bill errors in local bars and restaurants, according to Spain's Consumer Union (UCE). Local UCE president, Pedro Valera, told the La Verdad newspaper that perhaps unsurprisingly 80 percent of the complaints are during the high summer season and are based around the coastal municipalities of the region. Valera said that the number of complaints was low considering the high numbers of people enjoying the culture of going out for a drink or a meal, but added that the complaint numbers were not a ringing endorsement of the service industry. "Murcia, along with the rest of the country seems to be reluctant to complain about being over-charged, choosing instead never to come back to an offending establishment again", commented Valera. "Most people never raise an issue when

Hello Sailor Two German sailors who were onshore in Alicante City as a break during a NATO exercise, have been given six month jail sentences after assaulting three National Police officers back in May. Temperatures rose and tempers flared when the Germans got into a fight with some British tourists on the Plaza de la Puerta del Mar over an alleged theft. The police arrived at the scene and tried to calm things down with the sailors being in a severe state of intoxication. Things got out of control

they see their bill and there is also a strong element of not wanting to create a scene in front of other customers at adjoining tables". Belen Rodriguez from the Consumer's Association, FACUA, said that establishments have the right to charge whatever they want, so long as they make all the prices clear on the menu, and then the customers can

make up their minds as to whether they want to drink and dine at a particular place. Rodriguez added that surprise charges for using the bathroom or wanting a burger "well done" have appeared at some places in Spain, along with charging for what appear to be complementary glasses of water, or a cup of coffee, or even a piece of bread.

School Latest With the new school year up and running, Rojales council chiefs are asking Valencia’s Education Department why there’s been no announcement over the winning tender for the four million euro redevelopment of the dilapidated Príncipe de España school. There were hopes that work could have started in the summer but the

Valencian Government has apparently sought further clarification from some of the bidding companies. Rojales education councillor, Tatiana Cañizares, wants a meeting with Valencian officials to make sure that everything is still on track with the local authority hopeful that work might begin on the site by the end of the year.

Cabo Roig residents have attacked the lack of action in regard to over-flowing drains and pipes whenever there is heavy rain in the area. The problem appeared again during last weekend’s storms, and the local residents association has called for something to be done

about the problem, which also sees houses being filled with water and raw sewage. They say that they and the Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa (FAOC) have asked Orihuela Council to do something about it over the last few years, but to no avail.

Almond Acquirers

Dry conditions (recent days permitting) have caused major shortages and increased crop prices, with almonds grown in Alicante Province an especially valuable item to steal. That was the case with two almond rustlers who were caught by the Guardia Civil with 100 kilos of almonds in four

A court in Inca then sentenced them to a year in jail, but as this was a first offence and the custodial term is less than two years, they were set free, and were allowed to fly home with their children, including the son they had left in the hotel.

Safe and Sound

The normally quiet town of Mazarrón got a shock last week, as a fight between two gypsy families led to a woman being killed. Emergency services were called in as shots were heard on Calle Mariano Ruiz in the Murcia region town with a 60year-old woman fatally wounded by a bullet. Four adults and a 15-year-old child were stabbed and one person couldn't move their legs after they were run over

by a car. Feuding between the two families was apparently nothing new with a serious of confrontations taking place over recent weeks. Four people from the same family were found hiding in a local house and arrested by the Guardia Civil, along with three others who all appeared before a judge at Totana last Saturday. Five were remanded into custody, two of them facing murder charges.

Weeded Out

Two men who were reported missing on the Mar Menor last Saturday night, were found alive and well at Los Narejos just after 2.00am on Sunday morning by the Guardia Civil. The men, aged 37 and 42, had gone sailing on their 470 boat from the Tomás Maestre port at 6.00pm on the

Saturday, with the concerned family calling the authorities some three and a half hours later concerned that the sailors were late in returning. A Red Cross boat and a helicopter were drafted in to start a search, with the vessel eventually located in Los Narejos in the early hours of Sunday.

The Orihuela area will be represented at the next World Tourist Fair in London, according to Alicante Provincial Council vice-president and tourist representative, Eduardo Dolon. He made the announcement during a meeting with Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, where they talked about increasing tourism across

the municipality in conjunction with the Costa Blanca tourist board who will be flying the flag for the region in London. Dolon said that sports tourism, focusing on golf was one major part of the strategy, since the area boasted five courses. He also discussed increasing the number of visitors who would stop off from cruise liners.

The Guardia Civil have broken up a 400 memberstrong cannabis club that had been set up on the El Pino industrial estate in San Javier. The Guardia smelt trouble when they noticed groups of people snooping

around a building on a regular basis in July and discovered that the purpose of the premises was for people to consume or smoke drugs. The matter has been put into the hands of a San Javier judge.

High Stakes

Hidden Danger

Filtering Through

Despite more and more Spaniards stubbing out cigarettes for good, smoking-related deaths in the country are on the up over recent years, with 166 people meeting an early end every day according to a survey conducted for the Medicina Clinica magazine. Two years ago, Spain reached its highest peak of mortality rates, with over 60 thousand

deaths a year, with over 15 percent of the total deaths in the country caused by smokers. The deadly effects of smoking kick in some 30 years after someone takes up the habit, and that’s why cigaretteconnected mortality is up. The charity AECC Contra el Cancer say that around half of regular smokers will die directly due to their addiction.

A British holidaymaker on Mallorca has reported to the Guardia Civil that she was raped by two men under the cover of pine trees last Saturday morning in the resort of Port d’Alcúdia. The 22-year-old victim says she was ambushed at about 4.30am after she had left a nightclub. The Guardia say that she was walking through some pine trees when she saw a group of men inside a car trying to get her attention. She ignored them but moments later she was grabbed by two men. It is understood that one of the men held her down while

the other raped her. The Guardia believe the men were non-Spanish. Meanwhile, on Menorca, the National Police have arrested a 35 year old man from Mauritania in connection with the rape of a female British tour rep in Ciutadella, who was working at a hotel in Cala de Blanes. She had gone out on the Saturday evening and met up with a group of people before going to the home of a man to sleep. She alleges that a drink had been spiked and that the man sexually assaulted her. On her return to her hotel, the management called in the police.

The Guardia Civil, who raided what is thought to be Spain’s largest ever outdoor marijuana planation didn't have far to look for the prime suspect, as he already was in jail. The 47-year-old Spaniard arranged for others to cultivate a three-hectare olive grove that he had bought in Albacete while on prison leave. The prisoner relied on a 59-year-old Lithuanian assistant and a staff of five to tend 75,000 cannabis plants, which weighed five metric tons and were valued at five

million euro. The arrests were made when the plantation was raided just as crop harvesting had begun and 5,000 plants were drying in a building containing a clandestine laboratory and packing facility. The Guardia said that the farm in the central Albacete region was surrounded by a protective perimeter wall of dung and garbage that masked the plants' tell-tale aroma. Two Spaniards and three Moroccans were arrested along with the Lithuanian.

No Show Torrevieja's Teatro Municipal has been closed down until further notice, whilst the council tries to sort out all the proper permits, licensing, and safety work that it says the previous Partido Popular administration failed to carry out. Culture councillor Alejandro Blanco said that safety conditions for theatre needed to be

sorted across a variety of areas including the safety curtain and also procedures over what happens if a fire breaks out. Councillor Fanny Serrano condemned the fact that the theatre even opened nine years ago without any final completion certification claiming that the building posed a serious danger to people.

Heavy Penalty La Mata’s Vela Beach night club might not reopen for up to six months and faces a fine of up to 43 thousand euro if Torrevieja council gets its way in legal action against the establishment. The authority has led a purge against unlicensed entertainment venues and clubs that have ignored safety and noise rules, which has led to the recent closure of four places including Vela Beach. Poor soundproofing in addition to the liability insurance not catering for enough people, plus safety issues have con-

cerned the council, who have been praised for taking action by the local Molino Blanco residents association. The penalty though

against Vela Beach could be significantly reduced if the club quickly addresses the various problems that it has pointed out.

Serial Hoser

A Cartagena area man with a penchant for stealing hoses has been switched off by the Guardia Civil. They

say that he’s nicked at least 12 thousand metres worth of drip-irrigation hoses from rural houses around the

Campo de Guardamar. The 21-year-old got onto the Guardia's radar after a spate of thefts last month of gardening equipment, mainly hoses, from large country properties. Agents arrested him when he was trying to steal three thousand metres of irrigation hose from the grounds of a house and then detained him a few days later when they found out that he was behind two other cases of hose theft. The man has an existing criminal record for similar offences.

Arresting Future Two gay National Police agents have tied the knot in what is believed to be the first same-sex marriage between two police officers in Spain. Chema and Jonathan met while serving in the force, and have been together for some five years, and last weekend got married in full police regalia at a ceremony at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez de la Frontera. “We are not the first gays in the National Police, as we have lots of gay friends in the force," Chema told Canal Sur Radio. He added that he hoped their wedding

would help to achieve "normalization"."If it helps someone who is being bullied in school for their sexual orientation to see it as something normal, then that’s great. It’s not something that should

be hidden just because you belong to a particular institution," he added. Chema and Jonathan are now travelling the coast of California on their honeymoon.

Smoother Surface Road and pavement improvements are going to happen in the Pilar de la Horadada area over the next four months, with the costs paid for by the Alicante Provincial Council. The 180 thousand euro project will see resurfacing work on Calle Madre de Dios in El Mojon, as well pavement resurfacing across Pilar de la Horadada and Cañada de Praes.

Goods Taken Last weekend’s Santa Pola fiestas brought a busy time for the local police, who took action to clamp down on the illegal sales of goods. Up to last Sunday, they had seized over 600 boxes of illegal fireworks as well as a selection of BB

guns and airguns. Most of the items were being sold by a man in a van who tried to fool the cops by mixing up the items in various toy boxes. The police still rumbled him and they seized his illegal goods before filing a complaint.

Game of Peering

The recent wet weather has led Torrevieja council to launch a special plan to combat an expected growth in the number of mosquitoes. A company has been hired to strengthen the work of the municipal teams in applying pesticides to the lagoons where the young mozzies are about to hatch. The council

says that it is impossible to completely get rid of the pests, which in turn is actually good news for the birds who are waiting to feast on them once they start to appear. Any major fall in insect numbers would directly impact on bird numbers with further implications for the local natural environment.

Fired Up Cameras have started to roll again in Spain for the sixth season of the international TV smash hit Game of Thrones, with one of the locations being Girona on the Costa Brava. Crowds of people have spent the last week trying to get a sneak glimpse of what is going on,

with filming continuing in Girona until next Wednesday. One of the young stars of the series, Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, was spotted by fans on the first day of shooting, which also meant hundreds of local extras being given gainful employment.

His funeral took place on Tuesday and his body was due to be cremated on Wednesday. But a judge in Pozuelo de Alarcón halted the cremation after agreeing to investigate a paternity claim. Pay Out Pending

A Granada court has ruled this week that the Archbishop of Granada, Francisco Javier Martinez, can have civil action taken against him and his diocese for the alleged sexual abuse of a teenage altar boy by several priests. Judge Antonio Moreno justified his decision on the grounds that accused Catholic priests "responded directly to the archdiocese of Granada" and because the events allegedly took place at parish headquarters. The judge said any financial compensation which the archdiocese must pay would be established at a later date. Authorities opened their

troversial character with a reputation for shady business dealings and was under investigation for fraud at the time of his death. He was responsible for one of Spain’s largest financial scandals, a pyramid scheme that almost unbalanced Spain’s economy in the 1980s. Facing charges for defrauding the taxman of 20 billion pesetas, his companies were seized in 1983 and he was tracked down hiding in London and extradited to Spain. But he went on the run again, disguising himself in a raincoat and wig to evade police officers leading up to a court appearance. Back in July he was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison but suffering from ill health he was instead taken to hospital where he died on Monday.

Escape Fails tried to stop them. Migrants inside the centre smashed furniture and tried to set fire to mattresses, prompting firefighters to intervene, who also got hit by rocks. Police fired blanks to bring the situation under control at around 1 am, some two hours after the riot started, with some of the budding escapees being taken down from the roof by crane. Breaking Bad A man who sold drugs from a Santa Pola property has been arrested by the local police. Agents suspected that something suspicious was happening at the home on Avenida de Tamarit and

Greeting A Broad From Abroad I BELIEVE one of the loveliest things in life is to have a pen-pal in a place far, far away. . . ('For goodness sake, this isn't Star Wars!' Mrs S has just piped up.) . . . and then after years of close correspondence to be granted the opportunity to meet that person in . . . er, person. I hasten to explain that the situation never has applied to me for I have no friends residing abroad. ('You've none in this country either!' Mrs S declared. 'Why don't you just shut up and get on with it!') Okay, okay, so what was I telling you about? Oh, yes, the Silver residence was much of a madhouse the other day as we prepared for the arrival of Mrs S's pen-pal. Just consider it. The two ladies had sent each other hundreds of letters over the years and now were actually to get together for the first time. 'Do you think I've prepared enough food?' asked Mrs S, panting heavily from exertion and excitement. I watched morbidly fascinated as the legs on the dining room table appeared to buckle under the weight of practically every cooked (and uncooked) concoction known to modern man (and woman). If a table could speak then, believe me, that

table would have had so much to say. 'Just how much food can a person eat?' I asked incredulously. 'You've got enough here to feed the total population of . . . ' I tried urgently to think of a country which contained lots of people. Mongolia was pretty vast, wasn't it, but how many folk lived there? Not that many, I suspected. In order to complete the sentence I had started to state -- and also because I could no longer hold my breath -- I finally plucked a place out of thin air and gasped 'Japan.' 'Japan?' echoed Mrs S. 'That reminds me. I've forgotten the sushi.' The situation had leaped in one brisk bound from disturbed dottiness to complete craziness but I didn't say another word. Why burst the bubble of Mrs S's elation at finally being face-to-face with Ellie-Mae, her as yet unmet mate. At that moment, Ellie-Mae was winging her way across the Atlantic from her home in Tiptonville, Tennessee, to spend a week with us in downtown Bury. Mrs S glanced at the clock on the wall. 'You'd better leave for the airport now. Ellie-Mae will be landing in a couple of hours.' 'I've plenty of time to get there,' I said as the table legs

seemed to buckle a bit more. 'No you haven't,' said Mrs S. 'You've got to allow yourself some leeway for firstly running out of petrol and secondly going to the wrong terminal.' 'Why do you have no faith in me?' I

grumbled. 'And anyway, why aren't you accompanying me to the airport? It would be good to get all the emotion of your first meeting out of the way before we all go home to eat. 'It's not an attractive prospect to have you and Ellie-Mae slobbering over the supper you've been preparing for more than an epoch.' Mrs S sniffed. 'How can I come with you? Somebody has to prepare the sushi.' I departed for the airport and eventually arrived at Arrivals (after running out of petrol and then going to the wrong terminal) and prepared to greet our overseas guest. But I wasn't sure I would recognise Mrs S's pen-pal. I needn't have worried. I picked out our visitor from

the approaching throng with no trouble at all. Ellie-Mae stood at least 6ft tall and was a whole lotta woman. Her craggy, tanned

f a c e was framed by big hair with a 10-gallon cowboy hat perched precariously on top of the frizz. 'Goodness,' I gulped to myself. 'It's Arnold Schwarzenegger with boobies.' I walked up to our visitor with some trepidation and managed to break the world record for the most stupidever introduction. 'I'm my wife's husband. Would you please accompany me?' I led Ellie-Mae into the multi-storey, piled her three huge pieces of luggage onto the roof of the car and off we went.

After chugging along in silence for a while, I felt obliged to say something. But wanting to make amends for the prattish way I had introduced myself and also wishing to impress the American lady, I made a conscious decision not to come out w i t h

some hackneyed phrase like 'How was your flight?' Flailing around inside my brain for a profound statement, I eventually came up with: 'Mongolia's a vast country but not many people live there. And, by the way, I hope you like sushi.' Ellie-Mae gave me a weird look, struck a match with her thumbnail and lit up a thin black cheroot. Suddenly, I heard a screech of brakes from the vehicles behind me as Ellie-

Mae's luggage fell onto the road. 'I must get a roof rack,' I mused as I pulled into the kerb. 'Anyway, Ellie-Mae, you'll enjoy your stay in Bury. It's positively throbbing with things to do.' Ellie-Mae smiled. 'I know the place well, chuck,' she said. 'I live in Bolton.' I pondered on Ellie-Mae's Lancashire-twanged response all the rest of the way and came to a disturbing conclusion. 'You're not EllieMae Ellis from Tiptonville, are you?' 'No, luv. I'm Doris Dibble from Doffcocker and I've had a lovely holiday in the States. Thanks for the lift home and I'll bill you for the damaged suitcases.' I returned to my own home to find Mrs S holding up the partially-collapsed dining room table. 'Don't shout at me!' I shouted at her. 'I swear EllieMae wasn't there. Maybe she went off with some other bloke. It's easily done.' But Mrs S was looking decidedly sheepish. 'I should have checked my recent emails,' she mumbled. 'EllieMae can't make it. Her daughter-in-law is having a baby very shortly and the expectant grandma has gone there to visit instead. 'The family live in Ulan Bator. It's the capital of Mongolia.'

Equal Rights

An Alicante City theatre has been fined 30 thousand euro by an Elche court for discriminating against a disabled man from Crevillente. Alfredo Sánchez Sansano, 29, suffers from muscular

dystrophy and is virtually blind, and loves opera. Despite being bed-ridden, he planned to go with his parents in a special-adapted vehicle to see his first ever opera at Alicante’s ADDA

theatre last year. He checked months ahead to see if they would be able to accommodate him and he also had a personal invitation from the opera’s composer. When it came to the day itself, he was refused entry, leading the Elche judge to rule on Monday that the ADDA theatre had violated Alfredo Sánchez’s “fundamental rights of equality and anti-discrimination". The theatre made no effort to find an alternative solution and demonstrated "an absolute failure of diligence" the judge added. The theatre originally offered the family tickets for the following day, but then changed their minds, saying that could not come "for security reasons ".

Rally Tragedy

Seven people, including a pregnant woman due to give birth the following day, and a 12-year-old girl, were killed

after a car veered off the road during a car rally in north-western Spain last Saturday. 15 people were

also injured, some critically, after the country's worst ever sporting-related accident at the A Coruna car rally. The Guardia Civil are carrying out a full investigation. Tragedy struck just before 8pm when a Peugeot driven by Sergio Tabeayo Sande, lost control of his Peugeot 206 XS on a bend and smashed into a 20-strong crowd of spectators. Two of those killed were Ana Cayazzo, who was expected to give birth on Monday and her partner Miguel Caridad, both in their 20s, who died instantly. The 12-year-old passed away in hospital on Sunday evening, whilst the driver and co-driver of the Peugeot were uninjured.

Online Relief Twelve Alicante Province pharmacists have put in for licenses to sell prescription medicines via the internet. A new European Union law

came in during the summer which eased the restraints on prescription drug sellers. Amongst the local pharmacies interested in

selling online, two are the Orihuela area, one which is in Campoamor, addition to a pharmacy Torrevieja.

Touting For Answers Alicante-Elche airport's owner, AENA, is to investigate claims from taxi drivers based there, that some pirate companies are look-

ing for potential customers inside the terminal building. It was reported last week that the local Elche taxi association had hired a pri-

vate investigator who spotted illegal touting from unlicensed operators going on within the terminal building as well as outside.

Torrevieja is to eventually get a new boardwalk

between Los Náufragos beach and Cala Ferris after

a delay in sending through the necessary paperwork. Fanny Serrano from Torrevieja council said a grant from the Ministry of Environment had been approved in June, but the previous council administration had not put through the necessary documentation for work to start on the project, which is part of the compensation works in lieu of building the area’s desalination plant, itself bound in problems.

Real Deal Real Madrid football club has joined the growing number of organisations to pledge money to help refugees as the humanitarian crisis across Europe continues. The club has said they will give one million euro to help those people taken in by Spain, as people continue to flee Syria and other war-torn areas of the Middle East. Real said: "Faithful to its commitment to charity, the club has taken this decision with the aim of supporting

men, women and children who have been forced to

leave their homes in order to flee from war and death.

Gandia Grab

The Guardia Civil arrested an 18-year-old Moroccan woman in the Valencia region last Saturday, who is accused of preparing to travel to Syria to join the jihadist group Islamic State (IS). She was the latest in a series of suspected IS sympathisers detained in Spain since last year over security concerns. Police led the woman from her home in Gandia, her face and body covered in a black Islamic veil and fulllength robe with just her

bound hands showing. Armed officers stood guard outside her door and others in balaclavas carried away boxes of evidence from inside. Police said she was suspected of recruiting other women via the Internet to the group, also known as Daesh, which has claimed numerous kidnappings and executions. At the time of her arrest, the suspect "was making the last preparations for her journey" to Syria, a Guardia statement said.

The authorities said the woman as Moroccan but had lived for a long time in Spain. Officers arrested her "for suspected links with jihadist terrorist activities," the statement said. "She spread jihadist ideology on the Internet, justifying terrorist acts and spreading videos that glorified executions of people," it said. "She had focussed her online activity on recruiting women to go and swell the ranks of Daesh." Meanwhile on Monday, the National Police arrested a 19-year old woman in the north-eastern town of Figueres, near Girona, for "attempting to recruit people to send to fight for Daesh (Isis)". More than 100 people from Spain are suspected of having joined jihadist fighters in Iraq and Syria, and authorities fear they may return to launch attacks.

Abortion Change

Spain's ruling Partido Popular has used its parliamentary majority to restrict

the availability of abortions, making parental permission once again obligatory for

16- and 17-year-olds who are seeking abortions. The Senate vote on Wednesday was 145-89 with five abstentions. A year ago, Mariano Rajoy’s government scrapped a much-criticised plan to roll back the previous PSOE government’s 2010 abortion law, which allows for abortion without restrictions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. It said at the time that there was no consensus for the change. But it pledged to seek to restore the parental permission obligation for 16- and 17-year-olds.

High Growth

The National Police have shut down a major marijuana farm in the Elche area that was owned by Belgian and Dutch criminals who would grow the plants and then neatly vacuum package them for export and sale in Holland. The police got suspicious when they heard about high electricity usage at a villa in Torrellano, especially since the sheer volume of power caused local cuts at the times! The raid on the premises discovered a sophisticated growing system along with more than twelve-hundred plants. One of the gang members has been arrested and was denied bail by a local judge.

Logo Logic

Madrid’s new mayoress wants to see pictures of the city printed on paper napkins in bars and restaurants to promote the capital's tourist attractions. “I would love it if serviette

logos were not those of a supply company, but instead were pictures of Madrid and manufactured by the city hall,” says Manuela Carmena from the left-wing independent party Ahora Madrid.

Another suggestion was that of city scenes or a blanket tourism logo for Madrid to be printed on shopping bags produced for all retailers in the metropolitan area. Although Spain's islands and coastal regions like the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida remain firm favourites with northern European holidaymakers from colder climates, Madrid and Barcelona continue to be the most-visited parts of the country by foreign tourists and city-breakers, and demand for property in the two cities is greater than anywhere else in Spain.

The new school year kicked in this week with a series of rows and disputes over school transportation. Parents of youngsters living in Gran Alacant but going to school in Santa Pola have found out that they’ve not been given a dedicated service since there are not enough students, according to Santa Pola council, to justify putting one on. Meanwhile schools in the Orihuela area at San Bartolomé, La Aparecida, Desamparados and Los Dolses have been told they have no transport, with Orihuela’s education councillor, Begoña Cuartero (pictured), saying that some students will miss out on the

start of the year and called on the Ministry of Education in

Valencia to sort out the situation as a matter of urgency.

Banking on your Spanish After looking at medical visits and more enjoyable trips to a bar or restaurant, I thought that this week I would examine going to the bank and the vocabulary and expressions you may need. No one likes standing at the counter getting more and more embarrassed because their Spanish has let them down, therefore the more you practice before you go, the less likely it is that this is going to happen. I´m going to start with some vocabulary and then work in some phrases and give you an idea of how to improve your overall Spanish as well as your bank vocabulary. In this type of situation

you are likely to encounter many unfamiliar words and phrases. These words might include: savings account – la cuenta de ahorros; current account – la cuenta corriente, receipt – el recibo, chequebook – talonario, to deposit – ingresar, to withdraw – sacar, overdraft – descubierto, make a payment – hacer un pago, expiration date – fecha de vencimiento, monthly installment – cuota mensual, method of payment – forma de pago, interest – interés, transfer funds – transferir fondos, exchange rate – tipo de cambio. Now I want you to think

about what you need to do in the bank. Let´s imagine that we want to pay some money into your account, and the ATM isn´t working! I want you to think about what you would say in English, as this method will help you improve your confidence but remember that the Spanish have many more verbs that they use than we do and so we can´t always translate word for word. When we do it, it can sound a bit strange to a Spanish native but they will always understand you as long as your accent is good enough. I want you to write a script of your trip to the bank, and I want you to write it in English at first. It may look something like this: BANK TELLER: Hello, good afternoon. YOU: - Good afternoon. I´d like to deposit some money in my account please. TELLER: - Ok, do you have your account number? YOU: - Yes, here it is. TELLER: - How much do you want to pay in? YOU: Five hundred euros please. TELLER: - Ok, one moment please. Five hundred euros, is that right? YOU: - Yes that´s correct. TELLER: Ok, that´s done. Do you need anything else? YOU: No thank you, bye. Before you read on, try

writing the above out into Spanish. Think about verb tenses and vocabulary. Then when you have finished read my translation, bear in mind there may be differences and I hope that you are aware enough of your Spanish to know when and how you can differ from my version. Make sure you have written out your transcript before reading on.

Tú – no, gracias. Hasta luego. I hope you wrote something similar to the above, but remember that the Spanish aren´t normally as polite as we like to be. It’s just their nature and as long as you realize that this is just how they are, you won´t consider them rude. Don’t forget to keep on practicing and I’ll see you next week!

More Catty Moods

Help Needed K9 is an animal rescue organisation which has operated in the Valencia Region for many years, and they are a fully legal, non-profit making organisation. K9 is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who feel strongly about animal welfare and work hard to rescue, care for and rehome animals. They rely totally on public donations, fund raising and

the income from their two shops in Almoradi and La Marina to provide the funds to enable them to care for the animals to the high standard which they deserve. K9 is looking for people who have a few hours spare a week the help out in the charity shops and on the van doing deliveries and collections. For more details, visit their website at www.k9club.es

Depp’s Debacle The actor Amber Heard has been ordered to face a Gold Coast court in November on charges of illegally bringing two Yorkshire terriers into Australia, violating biosecurity laws. Heard, who is accused of bringing the dogs into the country by private jet in May while her husband, Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, was filming the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, was not present in the Southport magistrates court on Monday when her lawyers obtained a twomonth adjournment. Johnny Depp: 'I killed my dogs and ate them' The magistrate, Jackie McGee, ordered Heard to appear again on 2 November on commonwealth offences of illegally

importing animals into the country and producing a false document. The crown alleges Heard hid the arrival of hers and Depp’s dogs, Pistol and Boo, from customs and falsified her passenger arrival card. Heard’s barrister, Paula Morreau, of Ashurst lawyers in Sydney, told the court that because she was facing “simple offences”, the magistrate was empowered to grant an adjournment in her absence. The incident came to international attention after Australia’s agriculture minister, Barnaby Joyce, publicly declared Pistol and Boo should “bugger off home”, giving the couple 48 hours to remove the dogs who would otherwise face being euthanased.

This week we are continuing to analyse the different moods that your cat can suffer from and how you can tell the signs, and what you can do about it! Frustrated Frustration takes two forms: an active response to a specific event (e.g. she wants to reach a toy but can't), and a longer-term, more depressed frustration that occurs through absence of stimulation (e.g. the lack of opportunity to express her exploratory and hunting behaviours, perhaps because she has no outdoor access or other stimulation). A cat with a longer term, more depressed frustration is withdrawn, lethargic, often off her food and reluctant to engage in social interaction or play. She will also be frustrated when she can't avoid something unpleasant. An actively frustrated cat usual-

ly focuses on the object of her frustration, and will attempt to reach it. All her senses are attuned to the goal - eyes wide open with pupils dilated ears forward and pricked, and whiskers forward-pointing and spread. She will try to get closer, or pace impatiently if she can't. Focused Cats are supremely good hunters - they are able to stalk and catch prey with breath-taking ease - and they have an incredible capacity for focusing 100% on their target. Your cat can concentrate instantly on any small, moving object, or on something new, as she tries to discover more about it and figure out how to respond to it. If she is focused on a toy or other ‘target', her eyes are open with pupils narrowed, and her ears and

whiskers are pricked forward as she angles her senses and body towards the object of her attention. Her body may be low to the ground as she stalks, her hind legs coiled under her body. Her tail will be held out low behind her, the end sometimes twitching along with her hindquarters as she measures her pounce. If she is focused on you, perhaps trying to persuade you to pat her or feed her, she may solicit your attention by rubbing against you, her tail high in the air, but her primary focus will still be on her goal. This is simply part of the plot to make you provide what she wants and she will remain focussed on these goals until she achieves them. Relieved Relief is an obvious change from a previously negative emotional state. While it is very important to recognise when your cat is frustrated, anxious or fearful, you also need to know when she is feeling relieved and can relax again. Cats, like us, experience relief when they resolve worries or difficulties, and this feeling is at its highest when they survive real danger and the fear that comes with it. A cat's whole body can reflect relief, with an obvious release of tension in her eyes, ears, head, body and tail. Her whiskers relax, her head

lowers and her whole body calms and visibly unwinds as her emotional state then returns to normal. Some cats also make a full-body stretch to further release that tension, while others may yawn, turn away and half-close their eyes, or even have a good wash to relax themselves fully. Angry An angry cat's whole body is rigid, her tail held out stiff and straight or sometimes curled around or under her body. She will either be silent, hissing and spitting, or making a low, threatening growling noise. She may try to look as large and intimidating as possible with her fur erect, especially down her back, either standing on stiff front legs or crouching low and menacingly. Her ears will be tense and often held flat back on her head, her eyes hard and focussed with pupils often narrowed to slits, though sometimes rounder and unblinking, and her whiskers will be stiff and held bristling away from her face. Always avoid provoking an angry cat. Don't stare or shout at her or make sudden movements, and do not try to touch or comfort her as she may perceive this as an added threat and lash out. Instead, try to retreat slowly, remove the threat if it's safe to do so and give her time and space to calm down.

Tony Mayes - About Life

Good On Chrissie

If someone who left their doors or windows open and was burgled, we would instantly say that it served them right. Our attitude would be that people should not openly invite a crime. Similarly, we advise our children about stranger danger warning them not to talk to strangers or allow themselves to be a target. So why is it that when a girl who has her skirt up to her backside; her boobs hanging out; and roaring drunk and out at 4am in a dark street, try to pretend that her behaviour would not provoke some male idiot to perhaps rape her? People shouldn't "invite" a burglary and nor should a girl be stupid enough to invite a sexual crime. Of course rape is outrageous, but things can be done to stop predators from taking advantage, and that’s why I applaud Pretenders singer Chrissie

Hynde who put her head way above the parapet and said, in effect, that girls and women should not do things to actively court a sexual reaction. She remembered that when she was 21 and out of her head on sedatives, wearing just bra and panties at a Hell's Angels party, she was forced to perform various sex acts. She said: "If I'm being lairy and putting it about and being provocative, then you are enticing someone w h o ' s already unhinged. If you're wearing something that says "come on and sc--w me” you'd better be good on your feet." Good for Chrissie who has the courage to say it as it is, as loads of groups threw up their hands in horror at her comments, which seemed perfectly sensible to me. Sadly there are many young women in the UK who

think they can be as "lairy" and provocative as they like leading to sexual abusers and morons to take advantage of them. Tipping has been in the news in the UK recently, with Pizza Express in the spotlight for denying staff eight percent of the amount given by customers on credit cards, saying that was an administration charge. It tried to defend its "greed", but when the affair went viral on social media and customers started to vote with their feet, surprise, surprise, the company conceded and announced that it would give staff the full amount given in tips. But has this whole tipping nonsense gone completely out of hand? We went to an Indian restaurant last week with friends and had an extremely mediocre buffet. All the staff had to do was to bring drinks to our table and clear away the empties, but when we paid our bill there they were suggesting we should add a tip on the credit card. Utter nonsense. It's the same at Toby Carveries. We queue up and have meat put on our plate, serve ourselves all the veg and gravy and take it to the table. Why on earth should we tip staff for doing practi-

cally nothing? We're soon to be moving to a new era of employers paying a "living wage", and that being so, do we have to have tipping at all? Isn't it about time that restaurants, hairdressers, nail technicians, masseurs, drivers on coach trips, taxi drivers, et al, just charged a proper rate for the service and stopped looking for tips? I hate tipping culture - why should I tip for a service which should be given anyway? If the service was not provided satisfactorily we just shouldn't pay the bill. The whole rigmarole of tipping came about when toffs gave the very poor servant a farthing or halfpenny

to relieve a conscience. It's now got totally out of hand and should be stopped. There’s a parliamentary vote this week on whether assisted suicide should be allowed in Britain, and I hope gets passed as I am totally against religious leaders sticking their oars in, lining up to oppose the bill. The public responded to on-line news stories in newspapers and TV in their droves, the vast majority in support of allowing help to the terminally ill and those in intolerable pain to die if it is their wish albeit with safeguards. Here are a few of the most 'liked' comments. "Whether for or against this, the one thing we must never ever do is allow the opinions of the religionists to sway us.” “Sensible reasoned debate must decide the outcome, not mindless belief." "So the law trusts two doctors to decide on the fate of an unborn child, yet will not allow them to collectively decide with a patient's consent to assist them in a dignified death!” “I, like many others, have seen at first-hand, loved ones fight a losing battle with a life-limiting illness when a peaceful and dignified release from their pain and suffering would have served them far better!" "Forcing a terminal ill human being who is in excruciating pain is nothing but torture. Are we such a cruel race to inflict such suf-

fering?" "I don't tell this bloke (Archbishop of Canterbury) not to practice religion so what right has he to interfere with my decision how to end it when my time comes. He should stick to preaching and keep out of politics." And these were the two most disliked comments... "Suicide is wrong regardless, we are all spiritual creatures and it's the spiritual that matters and NOT the physical." "No one chooses to be born. Everyone should have the right to a pain-free death when-ever they choose" wrong on both counts. We all choose our race, colour, creed and gender before coming to Earth." Regular readers of my column know how I think the world has gone utterly mad, and here's another example. Apparently there's a miracle vibrating bra soon to hit the market which can permanently increase breasts by one cup size. Guess where it's coming from? America, of course! On one level it might stop some women from going under the knife to have silicon implanted into their breasts for cosmetic reasons, spending a fortune in the process. But on another level, just what damage are vibrating boobs going to do long term? Could it bring about the development of a cancer some years later? Why can't people just be content with what they were born with?

Rugby Top Fashion Some of you might be heading straight for the Rugby World Cup with a feeling of dread, others might be longing to see those well-built men tackling each other to the ground, but there an elegant style to rugby clothing that the more fashion conscious are already tapping into. Oversized clothing has often been the choice for loungewear around the home, from the boyfriend´s shirt to the husband´s r o b e , there is always something a little comforting

in being able to carry off the menswear look, and that same style

carries straight over to adorning ourselves with the clothing often reserved to be worn by those musclebound, meaty hunks. So how about the simple casual look, with a cap to accessories and amplify more of a country feel, drawing glamour from the earthy countryside, not such a phoenix from the ashes as more of an angel from the mud bath. W o r n much like a polo s h i r t , t h o s e l o n g e r sleeves really add to the overall look of class, whilst also offering added comfort, especially in the chillier

evenings. Worn over trousers, hanging loose, the casual style emanates from the centre out, leaving just the face as the highlight of the look. Then there´s the tucked-in, more formal style, still with trousers or jeans, adding an elongated contrast to the dominant colour of the top adds flair and style, with darker and bolder colours giving off an air of domin a n c e , whilst softer tones lead to a more elegant look.

The look doesn´t have to compose of trousers however, skirts and shorts can also emphasise both the colours of your chosen banner, as well as showing off your own personal characteristics, maybe with sleeves rolled up for a more rugged feel than starkly contrasts the elegant length of arms and legs. Wearing the hair down at the same time, accompanied by a touch of sauciness, can also offer a whole new image mixing the sturdiness with the subtle. Styling women with sports clothing is not a unique concept, in fact, even the Rugby World Cup merchandisers themselves are muscling in on the market, offering a full range of both traditional and styled rugby-based items, as well as those with a more retro feel, all aimed at the discerning lady and available on-line via their dedicated website, rwcshop.com/women. So whatever your choice of colour or team, you don´t have to miss out on feeling part of the action, even if the part you play is making yourself feel better without even watching a single game. Either way, the classic style of rugby shirts is not going away anytime soon, so they make a sensible addition to anybody´s everyday wardrobe for style or class.

Fall Colours

According to the latest Pantone Fashion Color report, this season displays an umbrella of accord that weaves earthy neutrals with a range of bold colour statements and patterns to reflect a landscape of hope, fun, fantasy and all things natural. The colours are evocative of a love for nature and a timeless appreciation for warmth and security, which are conveyed through naturally inspired colours that remind us of things that are real and protective. This Fall, designers’ pay homage to progressive moments in history, from the seductive ‘20s to the bohemian hippie and modernists of the ‘60s and ‘70s

2 - The Courier TV Pull-out

Patriotism Aplenty – Whatson´s Choice All Change At I´ve got a double-bubble costume this week, firstly to join in with the totally famous Last Night at the Proms, and then later to celebrate all of the UK teams in the Rugby World Cup. I thought about dressing as a parking warden in recognition of Parking Wars starting on ITV this week, but I decided that wasn´t such a great idea. Another great music based show on ITV this week looks back at TV theme tunes. I do love a good theme tune, it´s great when I play your favourite one and you instantly stop and look and get comfy in front of me, ready to be

entertained. J o o l s Holland is back this week too, maintaining the music and autumn feel, but for me, it´s like the official start of the autumn when I get the chance to show you the Last Night of the Proms, and when Blackpool illuminations are switched on, which was last

week by the way. This week it´s been a little damp around here too, off and on, so I think the summer is definitely over. By the way, before I forget, one of the downsides to major sporting events is that other shows have to move to accommodate, especially the soaps. Next Friday, there will be no Emmerdale or Corrie,

because of the start of the Rugby World Cup, we´ll talk about that a little next week, but one really, really important thing I have to tell you is that Coronation Street will be shown on Sunday this week, so make sure you set your timer. I´ve also added a little preview of Sunday´s Corrie, in case you do miss it! By the way, the soap roundup you read on these pages is only part of the whole story. If you visit the website, thecourier.es, you can read all about the top three soaps every evening, because we don´t want to spoil your fun by giving away the ending.

Parking Wars

“There’s really only one reason why we have roads and motorways and that’s for people going from one parking space to another parking space.” – Mike Robinson, Parking Manager Portsmouth City Council. This new three-part documentary for ITV looks at the controversial world of parking through the eyes of

motorists and traffic wardens. Campaigners including an ex-political reporter, a bedand-breakfast owner and a 97-year-old ballet teacher air their views on the issue of where drivers can park in modern-day Britain, where CCTV cameras and armies of enforcers ensure spaces are kept clear of illegally

parked motors. Cameras follow enforcers from authorities in Hampshire, Herefordshire and Yorkshire carrying out their jobs - dishing out tickets and fining motorists on high streets and in car parks. Special parking courts, Traffic Penalty Tribunals, try to make sense of the ongoing war between motorists and councils. They deal with more 21,000 parking disputes a year from everyday motorists fighting to have their fines withdrawn. With exclusive access to courts around the country, the series sees drama unfold as drivers come face to face with lawyers who decide whether to let them off or not. Parking Wars also features footage captured by

members of the public on their mobile phones as the civil enforcement officers patrol the streets and receive an increasing amount of abuse – sometimes through song, and sometimes something more dangerously physical. In the first episode, civil enforcement officers in Portsmouth are seen cracking down on errant drivers. Parking attendant Gavin Green says: “I would rather back a donkey in the Grand National than want to come and park in Portsmouth. You would have better odds on the donkey than parking and not getting a ticket.” Meanwhile, the city’s blue badge investigator looks for motorists using stolen, forged or fraudulent disabled parking passes.

Longleat

A revealing new series narrated by Hugh Bonneville goes behind the scenes at one of Britain’s most extraordinary aristocratic estates, Longleat. Lord Bath has handed control of the £190 million estate to his eldest son Ceawlin. But challenges lie ahead, as he and his newly-titled wife Emma take on a staff of hundreds, two villages and a safari park, along with the enormous Elizabethan family mansion. In the first episode on BBC One on Monday the handover gets off to a difficult start. In the village on the estate, there’s

unrest after rent rises on the estate. Meanwhile Emma settles into her new life as Lady Weymouth. She now has the run of the 130-room historic house - but she must get used to sharing her home with a daily stream of visitors. Over in the safari park, the animal keepers watch the family from afar, and wonder how Ceawlin will compare to his father. Lord Bath is a flamboyant, controversial figure. Although now in retirement, he continues to enjoy a famously open marriage. Various ‘wifelets’ still visit when his wife is away.

Last Night Of The Proms

The Gamechangers

On BBC Two this week, Daniel Radcliffe stars in a 90-minute factual drama which behind the scenes of the hit video game Grand Theft Auto, arguably the greatest British coding success since Bletchley Park. In Autumn 2013, the game’s latest iteration – GTA: V – earned $1bn in just three days, becoming the fastest-selling entertainment product in history. But this drama goes back to 2002, to tell the story of a three-year period of intense controversy in the history of this iconic game's development. It happened when two passionate men on either side of a highstakes cultural divide clashed. This conflict, between the creative genius behind the game and a selfstyled crusader for American morality, escalated into a fight for the hearts, minds and freedoms of an entire gaming generation. The fastest-selling entertainment product in history comes not from Silicon Valley, but is driven by a bunch of British game designers.

Friends since their school days, they are led by the game's mastermind-designer, Sam Houser. By 2002, Sam and his creative team have constructed for their fans a vast virtual world, teeming with a high-octane mix of criminal characters, lethal weapons and outrageous storylines. Here you can even shape and sculpt your avatar, crafting their character and appearance to your personal preference. Within this fantasy landscape, some players choose

to take part in a series of dangerous missions, while others become immersed in a sprawling criminal underworld, killing cops, hijacking cars and running over pedestrians. And it's this that increasingly drives opposition to GTA. Because the game's violent gameplay leads to fierce opposition: from parents worried about its impact on children; from politicians, fearful of its influence; and, above all, from campaigners fighting to prevent the game being played

by minors. At the vanguard of this crusade is the formidable Christian lawyer Jack Thompson, a man determined to do whatever he can to stop the relentless rise of the game and its influence on children. The Gamechangers tells the story of how British game designers pushed boundaries into uncharted territory, of how those fighting GTA became consumed by a battle which overwhelmed their lives, and how the subsequent fallout threatened to bring down leading players on both sides. This drama is for an adult audience and has not been authorised by the producers of Grand Theft Auto. Rather, it is based on court documents and interviews with many of those involved in the real events behind this compelling story. Daniel Radcliffe plays Sam Houser, and Bill Paxton plays Jack Thompson. The drama is written by James Wood, directed by Owen Harris, and produced by Jim Spencer.

On Saturday, BBC Two begins a magical musical night of entertainment, as Katie Derham introduces the final concert of the 2015 Proms season, Live from the Royal Albert Hall, as conductor Marin Alsop returns to lead the celebrations after her triumphant Last Night debut in 2013. Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings a selection of popular arias by Puccini in a programme which also includes Richard Strauss's sparkling tone poem Till Eulenspiegel and Arvo Pärt's 'Credo', a crashing musical battle between good and evil performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the BBC Singers. The remarkable 23 yearold British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor plays Shostakovich's sec-

ond piano concerto and the concert begins with the world premiere of the new BBC commission 'Arise Athena!' by the Jamaican-born composer Eleanor Alberga. The show continues on BBC One as tenor Jonas Kaufmann, soprano Danielle de Niese and pianist Benjamin Grosvenor are the star soloists in a programme which includes popular favourites by Gershwin, Lehár and James P Johnson, as well as a performance of Grieg's 'Morning' from Peer Gynt, which appeared in the first ever Last Night in 1895. Around the UK, Proms in the Park audiences will join in for a medley of favourites from The Sound Of Music to mark the 50th anniversary of the classic film.

for revenge Tony suddenly bursts in. As Jason throws a punch at Callum who will have the upper hand? Meanwhile with the threats from Denton ringing in his ears, Callum calls at No.8, warning Kylie and David that until they cough up his money, nobody in their family is safe.Cathy’s nephew Alex visits her at the café. Charmed by Alex, Roy invites him to stay the night on his sofa. But Roy and Cathy are embarrassed when Alex assumes they are an item. Some of TV´s favourites were recognised for their work on Monday as the TV Choice Awards were announced at a glittering spectacular. Sheridan Smith payed tribute to legend Cilla Black as she collected the Best Actress Award for her portrayal of the late singer and entertainer, "Obviously, it's tinged with sadness," she said on stage. "It's an absolute honour and privilege to play such an amazing lady. Thank you Cilla." Here is the list of the winners.

Six new episodes of ITV Studios World War II drama, Home Fires, began filming in Cheshire this week. British actresses Samantha Bond and Francesca Annis are reunited with an impressive ensemble cast. It’s the summer of 1940 and the village of Great Paxford is caught up in the nightmare of the Battle of Britain. Two weeks after the defeat at Dunkirk, the German army is advancing through France and Britain is bracing itself for invasion.

Throughout the series the residents at the heart of this rural Cheshire community face their own personal challenges and conflicts as reputations are tarnished, loved ones lost, and shocking secrets are discovered. However it’s the war years and the women, under the auspices of the Great Paxford Women’s Institute, unite and discover inner resources that will change their lives forever whilst helping maintain the nation’s fabric in its darkest hour.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI Hats off to Danny Baker and his adaptation of his autobiography, Cradle to Grave, because he’s saved the job of BBC comedy boss, Shane Allen, who joked last month that he’d quit if the show wasn’t a hit. Shane’s safe I reckon and Danny’s already writing series two of the funniest new scripted comedy of the year. It’s a real good laugh as we spin back to Danny’s days as a teenager in early-seventies Bermondsey with some hilarious situations, plus the bonus of Peter Kay playing his dockerdad, Spud, even though his Cockney accent is a bit on the dodgy side. That doesn’t matter, as you love watching some of his scams, and as a seven-

Cradle Rocks With Laughs ties teenager myself, I could easily relate to young Danny’s situations and what he got up to with his school friends. What a wonderful half-hour that BBC2 have come up with and the Beeb are right in not just screening this on a Thursday but also to come up with a quick repeat on the following Saturday night. The same repeat treatment is given to the first ever transgender comedy, Boy Meets Girl, which BBC2 shows after Cradle to Grave on a Thursday evening. Though not having the belly laughs of what precedes it, this is a really charming “smile on your face” story of a midtwenties guy called Leo, who still lives with his parents, and wants to find

love. That he does with an older transgender lady, touchingly played by Rebecca Root, who is one of the few open transgender actresses working in the UK entertainment mainstream. It’s a very likeable show with some familiar old hands provid-

ing support like Denise Welch, and it makes for a cracking comedy hour for the BBC, with I suggest both programmes set for a future airing on BBC1. It’s hard to believe that this is the same broadcaster that brought us the odious Suntrap earlier this year!

Piers Morgan may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but he does the only show on UK TV that spins back to the old days of Parkinson and celebrity interviews, in the shape of ITV’s Life Stories. He’s actually a better interviewer than Parky and doesn’t shy from asking direct questions and nobody comes on without expecting a bit of a grilling, and it’s not used as a vehicle to plug a book or a movie. Last week’s opener with Lionel Richie was fascinating as I learnt a lot about the singer, and that is what is so interesting about Morgan’s interviews, as he and his team prise unknown nuggets out of the guests. Put aside your views on Morgan, and just enjoy

what is a guaranteed good hour of television. These days if you have a hit American TV show, then temptation rules to launch a money-making spin-off. We’ve seen that with CSI and NCIS, and now The Walking Dead has joined the party with Fear the Walking Dead set in Los Angeles as we follow the virus and the zombies emerging in the first place. Sadly it’s only available on its parent satellite channel AMC in both Spain and the UK, but is worth catching, despite a plodding first episode that only caught fire in the last five minutes that didn’t inspire. Then episode two became a thrill a minute ride, which suggests this spin-off will be around for some time.

Taurus April 21-May 21 A time of wondering and waiting ends this week, when your ruler, Venus, starts to travel forwards through the skies again, giving you the confidence and drive to make the changes that you have been planning. You can, at last, begin to give a more secure foundation to a new, important friendship, so do not be afraid to show your hand.

Gemini May 22-June 21 Recent problems may have made it hard for you to get your point of view across to someone close, or to overcome their doubts. The planetary pattern changes in your favour this weekend, so do not be afraid to let down your defences, or to ask for what you really want long-term. You could also find out something very much to your advantage.

Cancer June 22-July 23 A lucky break or unexpected sequence of events could put you in a very strong career position now. All you need to do to take advantage of the stars is overcome your doubts and trust your sense of timing. It seems that what you have to offer could soon be in great demand, so dust down plans that you were forced to shelve and be focused and determined.

Leo July 24-August 23 With so much planetary action in your sign in recent weeks, you may have found it hard to work out which direction you should go in, or wondered if your current goal was really within reach. A certain situation is not cast in stone, so go all out to push through changes that you had postponed. A more successful and fulfilling era is beginning.

Virgo August 24-September 23 Events this week could make you see a personal issue from a new angle. With romantic Venus travelling backwards through the skies, you could read the wrong meanings into someone’s words or look for problems that do not exist. Take each situation as it comes, and you will get closer to your goal.

Libra September 24-October 23 After several weeks in which your ruler, Venus, has been travelling backwards through the skies and stirring up confusion, an easier, more constructive phase begins when it changes course this week. An unexpected breakthrough in a close relationship or friendship is also in your stars. Be prepared to change your plans without much warning.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 Decisive, energetic Mars and Uranus, the planet that brings sudden inspiration, align across your skies this week to help you find a new way to solve a recent problem. The solution you come up with could well be the key to real success in the months to come, so ignore well-meant advice and trust your judgment. The tide is due to turn.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Events this week should make it clear that doing things your way is the key to reaching an ambitious goal. If you take advantage of a chance to break new ground, you can leave restrictions in the past and forge ahead, so do not let a friend or colleague pour cold water on your plans. Your unique slant could also win you an important ally.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 Finding the right words to bring up subjects that you may have been avoiding, or overcoming a misunderstanding, may have seemed a challenge lately. This week romantic Venus changes course and recent tensions ease, so take full advantage of the stars to reach a new agreement. Postpone career decisions until later in the week.

Aquarius January 21 - February 19 With romantic Venus travelling backwards through the area of your skies that rules your love life and your most important bonds with others in the past few weeks, your confidence may well have been at a low ebb. All that is due to change from this weekend, so banish recent doubts and look ahead.

Pisces February 20 - March 20 If you focus on a new creative project you can bring about some kind of breakthrough in the weeks to come. With dynamic Mars and lucky Venus helping you to use your real talents much more fully, you are due to win the recognition you deserve from those who count. An unexpected meeting could also bring you a lot closer to your goal.

Preparing for Christmas 2015 There is no doubt that following hot on the trail of the likes of Frozen, film and TV related toys will be the biggest wants this Christmas, and it´s no wonder therefore that the big players are investing a lot in marketing in time for the 2015 holiday season. Before you start going on about it being “just September”, it´s now only 15 weeks until the big day, and if you want to be sure you get the most sought after toys, you´d better start thinking about it now, before they sell out. Right through the summer Minions have been just about everywhere you look, with licensed products sold in just about every sector, not only toys and clothing, but even food and drinks. The most bizarre being little yellow Tic-Tacs, perhaps, “Banana”. With the DVD of the Minions Movie set for release to coincide with Christmas, the trend is set to continue right through until next year. Tumbling Stuart is currently one of the top sellers, as is Bob with his very

own teddy bear, who gets so embarrassed when you hug him his cheeks light up! Or, maybe a pair of the rather funky looking Minion Goggles will be top of the wish list, so you can turn yourself into a Minion too, complete with yellow t-shirt and dungarees of course. Star Wars is also making a welcome return, at least welcomed by studio executives who calculate that Disney stand to make 5 billion dollars from merchandising sales, but the fans are looking forward to it too. Recent research revealed that almost 90% of children's toy boxes contain toys influenced by their

favourite TV shows and films. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will be in cinemas in December, not surprisingly. For the older kids and (those of us who proudly accept the name “kidults”) how about the Star Wars Millennium Falcon Drone? It´s a little on the pricey side, which is why it´s really reserved for those who appreciate the finer collectible, but it can really fly and can do tricks, just like the real thing, although the real thing didn´t actually fly and do tricks of course. Star Wars Legendary Jedi Master Yoda is set to be a favourite too, standing 16-

inches tall and is fully interactive with full voice recognition. He can spin a full 360 degrees, move his arms in order to wield a glowing

lightsaber and speak 115 different phrases. On the subject of interactive toys, remember Furby? The little bird-shaped ball of fluff that would learn as it got to know you. Well, Furby is back, this time riding the tails of Star Wars with the Furbacca Furby, which can even hum the theme tune. Lego are also continuing their relationship with the Star Wars franchise, and so the shelves will be flooded with build-it-yourself kits, all rather expensive compared to the Lego enjoyed by those of us now of a certain age, and lacking the creativity that it once had, but nonetheless, a favourite for this year. Meccano is back, although this time still offering something different for the creative and dextrous with the

Meccanoid Robot Toy, a

“four-foot tall, programmable, walking, talking robot” for children. The free-standing, voice-controlled, battery-powered robot can be programmed via a smartphone app to perform various tasks... Hang on a minute, do children have smartphones? Either way, the fact that your completed creation can initiate conversations, remember birthdays and mimic movements could make it a handy addition to any family. Also making a return this year we have seen

7

Thunderbirds, and so Tracy Island is expected to be a big seller, or you could just stock up on washing up liquid bottles and sticky-back plastic instead. Playmobil have launched their new interactive animated show, Super-4, and are already teasing with a range of products to accompany that. Peppa Pig, My Little Pony and Barbie are all working their way to toy shop stores as we speak, ready to beat the rush, but experts are still not dismissing Frozen, still as popular as ever, so maybe this will be the year when you actually manage to buy Skate and Sing Elsa, a multi-tasking model that skates and sings at the same time. And the song she sings is... Come on, you know the words...

Ireland explains 'artisan' to McDonald's

Cocktail of the week: MOTY cocktail

McDonald's is no longer allowed to describe its new McMór burger as 'artisan

Just days after launching a new burger in Ireland, McDonald's has been forced to change its name. Originally marketed as the "Irish artisan burger" the patty is now being described as the "exclusively Irish burger" after the Food Safety Authority ruled it was not an artisan product. Essentially a Big Mac, the McMór is Irish beef wedged inside a potato-flaked bun, topped with bacon, cabbage, whole baby leaf kale, Ballymaloe relish and Charleville cheddar. According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), in order to qualify as artisan a product must be

produced in limited quantities, made by "skilled craftspeople", use a traditional processing method, be produced in a "micro-enterprise at a single location" and use locally grown or produced ingredients where seasonally available. After years of deliberation, the FSAI recently came up with new, crystal-clear definitions of food terms often mis-used by the food industry: artisan, farmhouse, traditional and natural. A spokesperson for the FSAI said: "We're trying to make sure that when something is described as an artisan food, it actually is an artisan food, and not a large

manufacturer using that term just to get people to buy it." In a statement, McDonald's said: "The usage of the term artisan is, as we are now aware, inaccurate as it is in breach of some of the recently launched, voluntary guidelines around the usage of the term in the marketing of food. "This specific term will no longer be used in any news release around the limitededition McMór." McDonald's still sells an 'artisan grilled chicken sandwich' in America, a grilled chicken breast fillet topped with lettuce, tomato, and vinaigrette dressing.

The MOTY: Refreshing vodka cocktail with a hint of lemon and sauvignon blanc. Mixologist Ali Reynolds has created a unique and refreshing cocktail to toast the end of summer and the annual GQ Men of the Year Awards, available exclusively from Hawksmoor Bar, Spitalfields. Top with soda and garnish with cucumber ribbon / grapes Serve in a tall Collins glass and garnish with a ribbon of cucmber or grapes. Top with soda.

Food fit for royalty: What does the Queen really like to eat? Afternoon tea is a daily fixture in the royal household, and often includes delicate sandwiches

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II flicks through a red leather-bound book of menu suggestions from the head chef to the royal household, Mark Flanagan. She ticks what she likes and draws a line through the rest. The ticks are likely to go to dishes which include either chocolate or ingredients from her farms. For instance, fillets of beef and venison from Sandringham and Balmoral are turned into Gaelic steak, served with a sauce of mushroom, cream and whisky. And just like millions of her subjects, she enjoys a Sunday roast after church – but it’s the well-done end slice of a joint which makes its way onto our monarch’s plate. The Queen doesn’t do rare. She relishes the strawberries grown at Balmoral, and the sweetscented, white peaches that are nurtured in her greenhouses at Windsor Castle.

I know all this because a pair of former chefs have given me a gastronomic primer on our nation’s ruler. They have spilt the royal beans. Owen Hodgson worked in the Palace in the early Nineties and recalls: “When we cooked the Queen’s mushrooms we always added a smidgen of Marmite.” What culinary cleverness: mushrooms and Marmite are both rich in umami, that rich taste sensation found in comfort foods. This means the Queen’s mushrooms will be a deliciously savoury affair. Hodgson also recalls messing up a round of tuna sandwiches. “A chef told me off for serving the sandwiches with crusts. He then showed me how to make the perfect tuna sandwich: cutting the loaf lengthways, buttering both sides, adding the tuna-mayonnaise mixture and thinly sliced cucumber, with a crack of pepper. He then folded over the two lengths, removed the crusts and cut eight identical triangles. The Palace kitchen was all about the detail.” One chore is vivid in his memory. “I simmered rabbit, cooked down some chicken, then finely chopped the meat, sieved the stock and

returned the meat.” Was he making a terrine for the Queen? “No,” he says. “It was the corgis’ dog food.” Meanwhile, Darren McGrady recalls a similar first job in the kitchens – peeling carrots for the Queen’s horses. “Each one had to be finger-length and peeled to perfection. If ever a horse bit the Queen’s finger, it was the chef’s fault for cutting them too short.” McGrady became personal chef to the Queen and then to Diana, Princess of Wales, and today he owns a fine dining catering company and personal chef service in Dallas, Texas. The business is called Eating Royally, also the title of his memoirs. He says, “Sadly, the Queen is not a foodie. She eats to live, unlike Prince Philip who loves to eat and would stand and talk food all day.” The Duke, incidentally, has long reigned over the Palace barbecue. For breakfast the Queen likes cereal – usually Special K – and fruit. McGrady reveals, “The Queen loved scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and a grating of truffle. But she was too frugal to ever order fresh truffles and only really enjoyed them at Christmas when the truffles

were sent as a gift.” As for snifters, she takes a gin and Dubonnet with a slice of lemon and a lot of ice, and enjoys wine and champagne. Of the chocolate… “She loves it,” says McGrady. Afternoon tea is a daily fixture, and often comes with chocolate perfection pie or chocolate biscuit cake, made with McVitie’s Rich Tea biscuits. She follows culinary tradition, too. It was Queen Victoria’s chef who created the recipe for the chocolate ganache sponge cake that is served at birthdays for the Queen and her family. Jam pennies – buttered bread with jam cut into circles the size of the old English penny – are still on the menu. She used to have them with Princess Margaret as children in the nursery. How does she stay so slim? “When she dines on her own,” says McGrady, “she’s very disciplined. No starch is the rule. No potatoes, rice or pasta for dinner. Just usually something

like grilled sole with vegetables and salad.” McGrady adds that despite the kitchens belonging to the Queen,

they were always short on equipment. “To this day,” he says, “the chefs still use copper pans that belonged to Queen Victoria.”

Mediterranean Diet is effective in reducing Heart attack risk Patients should be able to decide whether they would prefer to take statins or make lifestyle changes such as adopting a Mediterranean diet People at risk of a stroke or heart attack should reduce that risk by adopting the Mediterranean diet rather than necessarily taking statins, leading doctors are urging. Eating more healthily, being more physically active and stopping smoking can be just as effective as starting to take the cholesterol-lowering drugs, they have said in a paper published on Monday. Bodies such as the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), which advise doctors how to treat patients, should rely less on medication to cut cardiovascular risk. The call, in an editorial in the healthcare journal Prescriber, has come from a trio of doctors, including the British cardiologist, Dr Aseem Malhotra, a promi-

nent sceptic about the value of statins. They believe doctors should tell patients in detail about the risks and benefits of using statins or the alternative of making non-medical, lifestyle changes, and let them decide which approach they favour. An estimated 7 million people in the UK are thought to be on statins and their numbers are set to rise because Nice last year lowered their criteria for those it deems may benefit from the drugs. Anyone with a 10% chance of having a stroke or heart attack in the next 10 years is meant to be offered one, where previously the threshold was a 20% risk. But the two main bodies representing GPs, the British Medical Association and the Royal College of GPs, have voiced serious concern about the NHS

advisory body’s updated guidance, even though family doctors are offered cash payments for implementing it. They have warned that the credibility of the quality outcomes framework for paying doctors is at risk because of the new 10% rule and are concerned that the change risks over-medicating some of the population. The call has drawn support from some doctors’ leaders. “For most middleaged people wishing to avoid heart disease, a healthy diet offers a far more powerful, sustainable and enjoyable plan than lifelong statin tablets,” said Prof Simon Capewell, vicepresident of the UK Faculty of Public Health. In the paper they point out that about 80% of cardiovascular disease – which is Britain’s biggest killer,

claiming one in three lives – is caused by “modifiable lifestyle factors such as nutrition, physical activity and smoking.” When doctors are discussing with those in danger of a stroke or heart attack how to reduce their risk, the paper says: “Patients should be counselled about the nature and

value of a healthy diet. A Mediterranean diet in moderation, with as little processed food as possible, is a cardiovascular intervention tested in randomised trials and shown to reduce CVD events.” In addition, “patients should know that physical activities, particularly enjoyable ones, can lead to

important, lasting health and quality of life benefits”, and they should also be advised to stop smoking. While such measures can cost money and be inconvenient they “rarely include significant harm risk, can prolong life, and have the added benefit of substantial non-cardiovascular benefits”.

Electric shock via Smartphone could cure Seasickness Within five years it may be possible to buy an electric shock device which switches off seasickness The misery of seasickness could be ended within five to ten years thanks to a new treatment which develops an electric shock via a smartphone.

The clinical cause of 'mal de mer' is still a mystery but scientists believe that it is to do with conflicting messages received by the brain from the eyes and ears

when moving. Although it affects many people, around three in ten suffer severe sea or motion sickness, experiencing dizziness, nausea,

headaches and cold sweats. Now scientists at Imperial College have discovered that is possible to calm the brain’s puzzled motion sensors by supplying a mild electrical current which reduces the impact of confusing messages. And unlike current tablets it does not make people drowsy. Researchers believe that within five years it could be possible to buy a small device which plugs into a smartphone and delivers a small electric pulse to the head through electrodes attached to the scalp. “It may be something like a tens machine that is used for back pain. We hope it might even integrate with a mobile phone, which would be able to deliver the small amount of electricity required via the headphone jack. In either case, you would temporarily attach small electrodes to your scalp before travelling - on a cross channel ferry, f o r

example." To test potential cures for motion sickness, researchers developed a special motorised rotating chair which simulates the feeling of being on a boat or rollercoaster. They then attached electrodes to the volunteers which targeted the motor sensors in the brain. Following the treatment, they were less likely to feel nauseous and they recovered more quickly. P r o f e s s o r Michael Gresty from Imperial College who collaborated in this study and is a w o r l d

expert on motion sickness said: "The problem with treatments for motion sickness is that the effective ones are usually tablets that also make people drowsy. “That's all very well if you are on a short journey or a passenger, but what about if you work on a cruise ship and need to deal with motion sickness whilst continuing to work? "We are really excited about the potential of this new treatment to provide an effective measure to prevent motion sickness with no apparent side effects. The benefits that we saw are very close to the effects we see with the best travel sickness medications available."

Lower Back Pain and Kidney Problems

Lower back pain is not always due to a trapped nerve from sciatica. Sometimes, lower back pain is caused by problems affecting the kidney. The job of the kidneys is to filter waste from the body, which implies that they are regular-

ly exposed to toxic compounds and harmful microbes that can be harmful. Unsurprisingly, the scans performed at MedB clinic show that kidney problems are typically associated with high levels of toxins as well as infectious microbes.

Bacteria such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus are the most commonly detected microbes. Microbes also produce toxins that add to kidney problems. Kidney infections usually originate from surrounding organs such as the urinary bladder and urethra, and then spread to the kidneys. Women are also more prone to infections perhaps from

having a shorter urethra. High levels of toxins may be the cause of k i d n e y problems that do not respond to antibiotics. Medications are one of m a n y sources of toxins that the kidneys have to filter out of the body. Normally, the kidneys can cope with everyday environmental toxins. However, they start to struggle with extreme levels of toxicity that can cause serious damage to the deeper structures of the kidneys, causing inflammation and lower back pain. Some of the toxins routinely picked up from the scans performed at MedB clinic include heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium, as well as mycotoxins from molds and pesticides. Prescription Painkillers are very toxic and put a lot of strain on the kid-

neys during their metabolism and excretion. Painkillers are usually taken for joint pain due to arthritis. Nevertheless, joint pain can be better treated with MSM (Methyl Sulphonyl Methane). Water plays a very important role in flushing toxins from the body, and this makes it crucial to drink at least 2

litres of water every day. Some people may have extremely high levels of toxins from many years of buildup, and it may be necessary for them to take an effective detox such as Pectasol. FOR A FULL BODY DIAGNOSTIC SCAN CALL MEDB CLINIC: 965071745, 966189074

Why should I clean it? New research recently revealed that men still don’t do anywhere near their share of the cleaning. Childcare and cooking are much more equal these days, but women are still far more likely to get landed with vacuuming crisps off the carpet. This led columnist Jon Chait to make a provocative suggestion: what if it’s because men just have lower standards of cleanliness? “My brother’s threedude college apartment was so filthy, it was condemned by the [local] board of health,” he wrote. “It had a spilled milkshake on the floor that

stayed there all year, forming a permanent, unearthly silver blob that became an object of curiosity.” Sure enough, one study found that single men, with no one else to do the cleaning, still do half as Perhaps it’s social pressure that causes women to care more about cleanliness – but it does imply that people are differently bothered by hygiene. To feel motivated to clean something, you’ve first got to notice, and care, that it’s dirty. I thought of Chait’s milkshake, as it were, when reading Hidden In Plain Sight:

The Social Structure Of Irrelevance, a recent book by sociologist Eviatar Zerubavel. His overarching point is that everything we do depends, first, on what we define as worth noticing: you can’t care about mess, or anything else, if you don’t “see” it as an important part of reality to start with. The famous “invisible gorilla” effect demonstrates this in visual perception: people asked to count passes between basketball players on video fail to notice a person in a gorilla suit walk across the screen. But

Zerubavel argues this applies not just to vision, but to the whole way we approach the world, dividing it into “foreground” stuff that matters and “background” that doesn’t. Hence the common advice for boosting creativity: defamiliarise yourself with the world. Notice the space between objects, the silence between sounds. “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle,” wrote George Orwell. Be warned, though: get too good at this, and you could find yourself doing a lot more cleaning.

ADVICE: Vilma wanted to know if she really needed all the security tools installed on her computer

Q A

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Barry wanted to know where he could download a DVD of Windows 10 from

Q

Please can you advise me on if I really need Malwarebytes Anti Malware and Mc Afee Security Scan Plus, when I have paid for Norton 360 Premier? Yours sincerely, Vilma.

Hi Richard, One more, silly, question. You say that I can burn a DVD. Is this possible without actually installing at the moment? If so then I can install at a more convenient time. Thanks, Barry

Hi Vilma, ok, here we go.... McAffee Security Scan Plus - this is a free tool, usually downloaded to your computer along with other free software, it is not needed and can be removed

Hi Barry, yes if you are on Facebook then have a look at our page – it has lots of information relating to things like this, you can find it at… https://www.facebook.com/bluemoonsolutionsspain …please take the time to like it if you find useful information there. In terms of your specific question about how to get hold of a DVD of Windows 10, you can get one from here… http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/official-links-for-windows-10-rtm-isofile-now/3503502a-cff3-4c90-a3f5-44a665d38fa7?auth=1

safely. Malwarebytes Anti Malware - is a great tool and is one of the best at keeping malware in check on your computer, it's well worth having but not critical. Norton 360 Premier - This is your main AntiVirus software and does need to be installed, up to date and running on your computer. Hope that helps clarify things.

David Looks For New Tee

If you enjoy watching the US golf tournaments on Sky Sports, then over the years you’ve got used to a number of voices commentating on the action, some of which like Nick Faldo and Peter Oosterhuis come from over this side of the pond. Viewers over here get the action fed over from the particular American network that is covering the event like NBC, ABC, or CBS, along with their respective commentary teams, some of whom have become firm favourites with British viewers, if Sky don’t use their own line-up. One popular character and one of the very best (and funniest) of the Stateside analysts is the ex-Northern Ireland golfer, David Feherty, who has quit the CBS team after 19 years of walking the fairways(or not had his contract renewed, depending on who you choose to believe!). Oblivious to us, because we get all the action via Sky Sports, there’s been a vicious battle in America over rights and a new boy on the block, Fox Sports

• Watching Phil Mickelson play golf is like watching a drunk chasing a balloon near the edge of a cliff. • That ball is so far left Lassie couldn’t find it if it was wrapped in bacon. • I am sorry Nick Faldo couldn't be here this week… he is attending the birth of his next wife.

• Win and you are the superior being in all the universe; lose, and may the fleas of a million rodents, infect your every orifice. Accident-prone Sam!

(part of Rupert Murdoch’s Sky empire) has wrested the USGA rights away from NBC and the Golf Channel (both owned by the same company) and now they are also fighting over on-air talent, including the n o w available F e h e r t y. T h e Ulsterman apparently had enough of being an on-course commentator and wanted to be

based in the studio, doing some anchoring and commentating, despite the fact that Nick Faldo and Jim Nantz already share those duties for CBS. Failing that, his management company demanded a massive hike in his pay, and CBS said no! The ball appears to be in Feherty’s court, but he has to make up which way he wants to go. The new boys Fox only have the U.S. Open; the U.S. Women’s Open, and the U.S. Amateur tournaments on its schedule, which will massively reduce Feherty’s airtime. NBC has the British Open, starting in 2017, as well as the Ryder Cup, the Players Championship and numerous other PGA Tour events. And it also has the Golf Channel, where Feherty does a weekly interview show already. The hitch is that NBC’s leading

golf analyst Johnny Miller, who is hugely popular and hugely disliked simultaneously, which the true indication of a great commentator. Miller, 68, may want to cut down on his schedule and NBC may be able to offer Feherty that job down the road. Sources say that NBC is cultivating David Duval for Miller's job and wants Feherty as an on course commentator, the job that he got tired of at CBS. Meanwhile Fox have bags of money (sounds familiar!) to throw at their coverage, and so Feherty has an interesting choice to wake, but you can be certain that he’ll be working for somebody. Here are of few of Feherty’s famous “One Liners” • He's hit more balls than Elton John's chin - on Vijay Singh’s practice session

It so happens that David Feherty is a very good friend of Sam Torrance having spent a lot of time together on the European Tour and they played in the 1991 Ryder Cup, but along with David Feherty’s news, comes a tale of Sam’s nightmare list of accidents which normally spell bad news for him! After all, we are talking about a man that almost missed out on a Ryder Cup after walking into a plant pot at The Belfry and fractured his sternum; damaged ankle tendons in a kerb collision in Dubai; and couldn’t defend his French Open title due to a rib injury. His catalogue of mishaps over the years, in fact, make you wonder if he carries a first-aid kit in his golf bag? For once, however, falling over has, albeit in a roundabout way, put a smile on Torrance’s face. After fretting for six months over a niggling groin problem, he’s been told it’s nothing more than a trapped nerve. After going through a nightmare with an injury he’d had for six months, He’s finally got to the bottom of what’s been wrong, the newly-turned 62-year-old had a trapped nerve there and it goes

right down the leg. It only affects him when he stands up but it was pretty sinister. They thought he might have a stress fracture in the hips but they were perfect. Not getting to the bottom of it was very worrying. Was it muscular? Was it MS? He didn’t know. It was extraordinary how they found out. His leg gave way and he fell, hitting the back of his head. He went to see a neurologist and they asked him how it happened. He said my ‘leg gave way but that’s another story’ and they said ‘what?’ After an ECG and, after three minutes, they said ‘I think I know what this is’ Sam was a bit like ‘are you sure because I’ve had this for six months’. “He put this electrical thing right in near my hip and buzzed it and that was right on it. He does it on the other side and the current went right down my knee and back up. That showed that if it’s doing it there and it’s not doing it on the other side then there is something trapped in here. So I’ve had to bash my head, which I had to have an MRI on and I can still feel it, to fix my leg.” Sam recalls.

TITTER ON THE TEE The other day a neighbor came running up to me in the driveway just jumping for joy! I didn't know why she was jumping for joy and so I starting jumping up and down. She said, “I have some really great news!" She stopped jumping and, breathing heavily from all the jumping up and down, told me that she was pregnant! "That's great! I couldn't be happier for you!" Then she said, "There's more." I asked, "What do you mean 'more'?" She said, "Well, we are not having just one baby. We are going to have twins Amazed at how she could know so soon after getting pregnant, I asked her how she knew. She said... “That was the easy part. I went to Boots and they actually had a home pregnancy kit in a twin-pack. Both tests came out positive!”

La Veulta finishes in Madrid on Sunday and it’s unclear who’s going to win, with an exciting climax likely to the three week event. Dutchman Thomas Dumoulin gained a three-second lead after a superb time-trial on Wednesday. Dumoulin, 24, completed the 38.7km course in Burgos in 46 minutes one second, more than a minute faster than Maciej Bodnar and Alejandro Valverde, who finished second and third. Italian Fabio Aru, second overall, lost only 1min 53secs to Dumoulin and is expected to do well in the mountain climbs over the final four days. "This race is not finished," said Aru. Aru, 25, who won the mountainous Giro d'Italia stage 19 summit finish this

year, added: "I will be saving my best until the end." Dumoulin, who is trying to become the first Dutch rider to win a Grand Tour since Joop Zoetemelk was victorious in the 1980 Tour de France, was surprised by his wide margin of victory. "The course suited me but to win by over a minute is amazing," he said. "It - the overall lead - is only three seconds so I am a little bit worried. A small gap in a bunch finish is three seconds. It is going to be very stressful but, with two stage wins, the Vuelta has already been a success for me." The overnight leader, Joaquim Rodriguez , could only finish joint 30th in the time-trial and is now 1:15 back in third overall ahead of yesterday’s stage.

The Wales striker, 26, has been at Madrid since joining from Tottenham in September 2013 for a world record £85m. That deal was brokered by Jonathan Barnett, Bale's representative. Asked if there was truth in reports he was close to a summer exit, Barnett said: "None. Why should he leave?" Barnett would not con-

firm whether or not Manchester United were interested in Bale, but suggested there is little chance he will move to the Premier League in the foreseeable future. Bale is not yet halfway through the six-year contract he signed in 2013. "He has a contract and is enjoying life," added Barnett. “If you asked him today if he would move he would say 'no', but life changes. I would say he is happy there and as long as they are happy with him he will be happy there”.

Away Day Blues For Torry AT.SAGUNTINO 1 CD TORREVIEJA 0

CD Torrevieja’s start to the 2015/16 campaign has seen the team pick up just one point from the opening nine on offer, and they got nothing after manager Pedreño rung the changes for their away fixture last Saturday night. 21-year-old Brit, Lewis Allen made his league debut in a role as central striker, pushing Juanfran out wide on the left. Brani started as did his fellow teenager, Croatian Metej, who had a solid game, despite a couple of wobbly back passes that had Oscar scrambling to clear as Saguntino’s for-

wards advanced. Allen and Brani used their pace to good effect, with Allen also using the ball well and making several penetrative passes, usually to Juanfran, who seemed at home on the wing. The bandaged Torry striker failed to trouble Adri in the Saguntino goal, missing the target with his efforts. Brani controlled a long cross pitch ball from Metej and was rounding the keeper to slot home when somehow Adri got a fingertip to touch the ball away from his toe. The hosts rallied well and began to dominate the middle of

the park, where Sanchez was struggling to assert his command. However, Sanchez did break well from defence to create a four against three situation, but Saguntino covered well and Torry did not find the space nor the pass they needed to exploit the advantage. Another excellent opportunity was spurned when Allen fed Juanfran into the edge of the box to unleash a shot well wide of the mark, when it might have been better for the Brit to have taken the responsibility himself from just outside the penalty box. Torry lost the initiative with Saguntino on top as the half ended, winning a series of corners and making the Torry defence work hard to keep them at bay. The game was tight and it was clear that one goal would probably settle the spoils. The second half was barely started when that deciding goal arrived. Saguntino took a quick free kick and played the ball to the left wing. Vicente jockeyed with his opponent but could not prevent him deliv-

Saturday 12 September ering a deep cross to the far post. There, Fran Gámez volleyed home with clinical precision. The visitors then suffered the big blow of losing Carrasco for a second yellow card in the 64th minute, which gave Saguntino complete confidence. They took their time, holding the ball whenever they could and invariably wasting as much time as they could get away. At one stage they walked so slowly to take a free kick from a dangerous position that some people thought it was some kind of rehearsal for new zombies to join the cast of The Walking Dead! However, it was Torry who created a couple of good chances, but it was not to be as Saguntino reverted to heavy armed tactics to retain their lead and the points. Four minutes of injury time failed to see a Torry revival akin to that against Borriol the previous weekend, and with Altzira to come this Sunday evening at 6.00pm at the Vicente Garcia stadium, Torrevieja really can’t afford to suffer another defeat.

Copa del woe ALMERIA 3 ELCHE 3 (after extra time….Almeria win 4-3 on penalties)

Elche were knocked out of the Copa del Rey away to old rivals Almeria in a penalty shoot-out on Wednesday night which saw the home side miss just one of their spot-kicks, whilst Elche did not convert two. An exciting see-saw match saw Cristian Herrera get two for the Ilicitanos, with the score being two-all at the end of the 90 minutes.

Good Point NUMANCIA 0 ELCHE 0

Elche's new look team continued their promising start to their season by getting a draw at Numancia last Saturday evening, ending the home side's 100 percent record so far in this current campaign. It was a fairly even contest, which didn’t produce many scoring chances for either side. The Illicitanos tactics were very much to sit back and strike on the counter attack with Alex Moreno and Espinosa looking the liveliest. In fact Espinosa really should have put the visitors into the lead in the first half with the best move of the game, which saw him escape the Numanica defender and then let rip with a shot that hit the woodwork. The second half was pretty cagey as well, with both defences looking solid, and Numancia having the best chance through an Álex Alegría shot that he could only aim at Elche keeper, Javi Jimenez. The Ilicitanos next league action sees them back home at the Martínez Valero stadium tomorrow evening(Saturday) against promoted Gimnàstic de Tarragona in an encounter that kicks off at 6.00pm.

La Liga Back Top flight football returns to Spain this weekend with a full La Liga Primera Division fixture list after the international break. The stand out contest is Saturday night’s clash between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona which kicks-off at Madrid at 8.30pm, with Real Madrid away to Espanyol earlier in the day. The Friday night game sees Levante entertain Sevilla with an 8.30pm start.

MADRID HISTORIC De Gea’s Madrid move fell through on deadline day Hola Inglaterra!

English soccer fans on the Costa Blanca have netted themselves a big bonus for this November with the news that Spain’s international friendly against Roy Hodgson’s side will be played in Alicante, so long as Spain are not involved in any Euro 2016 play-off’s(and that is almost certain after winning their last two qualifiers). It appears that local England supporters have detractors of the Spain and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique to thank for the fixture’s switch from Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium. That’s due to the boos and whistles he has been suffering from Spanish supporters due to his backing for Catalan independence, and the potential for some embarrassing scenes on television ahead of December’s general election. The Spanish Football Federation refused to comments on the rumours that the switch to the Jose Rico Perez stadium(home of Segunda B side, Hercules) in Alicante had been suggested to them for nonsporting reasons, but merely issued the statement last Monday:"In the event that Spain qualifies directly for Euro 2016, they will face England in an international friendly that will take place at Alicante's Jose Rico Perez stadium on Friday, November 13th, using a FIFA date." The AS newspaper made it clear that from their sources, that the match had been switched to Alicante to avoid more outbursts against Pique. The ex-Manchester United defender was booed once again when Spain took on Slovakia in Oviedo last Saturday in a European Championship. Manager

Vincente Del Bosque spoke out in defence of Pique calling the abuse "disgraceful". The Spanish FA are hoping that there is no repeat in the future but some voices inside the body believed that the Bernabeu stadium was the worst possible venue for the England friendly and have taken the decision, despite the huge drop in prestige and possible ticket sales revenue. Valentin Botella, vice president of Hercules and Spanish FA board member revealed that it was only on Monday that he first received a call from his federation president, Angel Maria Villar about playing the friendly at Hercules’ ground in Alicante. Botella said that he had suggested the venue a long time ago, but having found out through the media that the Bernabeu had instead been chosen, and then to be told of a U-turn was a delight. “The President didn’t say anything to me about Pique and nor did I want to ask. For us it’s great news that Spain returns here after four years,” said Botella. The Jose Rico Perez stadium in Alicante was used in the 1982 World Cup and has a 30,000 seating capacity, with England last meeting Spain on Spanish soil in February 2009 in Seville, with La Roja winning 2-0. Spain beat Scotland 3-1 in a Euro 2012 qualifier in Alicante back in October 2011. Ticket details and the kick-off time for the November friendly will be confirmed once the fixture definitely goes ahead on Spain’s automatic qualification to next year’s Euro finals.

SAVE HIS CHANCES? De Gea was desperate to leave United fo Madrid.... But will Van Gaal’s stance jeopardise his Euro hopes!

MOCK UTD FAILURES SAGA CONTINUES Real Madrid will not move for David de Gea in January as Florentino Perez hints keeper could sign new Manchester United contract.

Deadline – What Deadline? Real Madris President Florentino Perez has revealed that they will not seek to capture De Gea once the window opens again in January. "We will certainly not sign De Gea in January," he told radio station Cadena COPE."Madrid did its job as best it could. We did not get there on time because Manchester does not have the necessary experience to tackle these things on the last day, as happened with (Fabio) Coentrao." Perez's mention of Coentrao is in reference to United's failed loan bid for the left-back on deadline day in 2013. Having lived on this planet for sixty-six years, one of my main ‘thrusts’ in life is that many of the world’s problems today are caused by communication – or lack of it, to be more precise. Two people, two organisations, two countries, two of whatever, just failing to talk to each other in simple language and understand and agree certain points: hardly rocket science is it? Yebbut, nobbut, the recent football transfer deadline saga reveals this mal-communication at its finest – or worst when you look at the outcome. For months Manchester United knew that their Madrilean goalkeeper was interested in returning to Spain, albeit to mighty Real, not Atletico from whence David de Gea came. With only a year left on his United contract it made common and commercial sense to sell while £30m was available for the Old Trafford coffers with much cheaper replacements available, albeit perhaps of lower quality than arguably United’s saviour over the last two seasons. The on/off saga dragged on and off and back all through the summer break, yawn, and by the time pre-

season training and tours started, De Gea was even not training with the first team. Not the United manager’s finest hour, day or month as Louis van Gaal was left openly scratching his huge head in utter bewilderment of the situation at any one time, bizarrely in press interviews declaring ‘ I don’t know’ when asked bluntly what the de Gea was going on. It has to be said Alex Ferguson would never have let things go that far, indeed in a similar situation several years ago the exUnited manager dug his heels in and persuaded the great Ronaldo to stay one more year before then moving to Real Madrid satisfactorily, and the Portuguese went on to further success with everyone left happy: no such bold initiatives this time from van Gaal. One recent farcical photo revealed not one, not two, but three suited and booted full international Manchester United goalkeepers sitting together in the Old Trafford stands gloomily watching a key game: De Gea; exBarcelona keeper Victor Valdes, who van Gaal (controversially) claimed had refused to play in the United under-21’s; and Anders Lingaard, the third choice keeper, also for sale. The three were all grimly watching Argentinian newboy Romero, bought ostensibly to replace de Gea when he left: you couldn’t really make it up. At last during the final days to the deadline a predictable burst of activity took place, which ensured new financial records were set. At nasty neighbours Man City, Kevin de Burgh became the most expensive reserve ever as he joined the Blues for an obscene £56m. It really looked like a sensible (if OTT football transfer levels are ever sensible) sale would go through

between Manchester United and Real Madrid for de Gea for £30m - and the saga would end, not happily, but inevitably... ….except - two huge, globally-branded companies cocked it up savagely between them. With all the modern methods of communication known to man available, contracts and altered contracts were slowly – too slowly – moving between the two footballing giants as time wore on. Suddenly time was up - and the September 1st deadline appeared. That muchvaunted, well-advised deadline of midnight arrived. But somehow, unbelievably the de Gea deal was not satisfactorily concluded in time, amazingly involving key seconds into two minutes – and everybody suddenly lost. Real didn’t get their man, the Spanish in a rage, leaving United having to rebuild relationships with their outstanding young goalkeeper, plus presumably getting nothing for him next year – what’s £30m and one can only guess how poor de Gea feels now. But rules are rules, and even global superweights Real and United can’t bend them. Some two people, somewhere – a highly-paid person from each side - is ultimately responsible for this ghastly world-watched example of appalling communication, people whose job descriptions say they must make sure such deadlines are met, well in time and not completed by trying to scramble into the guards van as the train pulls out of the station. Can/will anyone explain how such a hugelyimportant financial transfer involving a lot of money can be derailed by such amateur communication? It really does make you worry for the future of the world as such transgressions take us backwards, not forwards.

SMACK A BATTLE OF THE REDS

ROO

Big two under Pressure!

The big Saturday evening Prem clash has everything, and perhaps with maximum real pent up passion between the clubs, we have Man United at home to Liverpool, a clash of traditional hatred. Is there new Marital French harmony at Old Trafford, with Espana’s de Gea recalled to be numero uno? A man under pressure is Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers; seven points from three games was OK, but that was until West Ham came to Anfield and total unexpectedly nuked the Reds three-nil. There’s a lot riding on this result, he said with classic understatement. A tad quieter Sunday for once sees Sunderland taking on Spurs in the early match. The Black Cats look wretched at the bottom of the Prem, only two points from four games. Somewhat surprisingly Dick Advocaat’s lads have actually scored six which is better than half the Prem, but conceding ten is the unsurprisingly worst. Tottenham? Oh dear down de Lane, only three points from four games, no wins, a paltry three goals scored all makes Danny a dull boy - and senor Levy is known to have an itchy trigger finger, ask Tim, and Andre – and Harry… Talking of Tim, later on Sunday Sherwood takes his merry mid-table men from west to east Midlands as Villa take on lively Leicester. To everyone’s surprise, including mine, the Foxes are third, and deservedly so. Previously known as ‘the Tinkerman’, always changing his players manager Claudio Ranieri seems now to be not changing a winning team: two wins and two draws, unbeaten in four is classy stuff. Mediocre Aston Villa need a spark of something, so is that King Stadium the place?

L A O G D RECOR

HAUL!

Wayne Rooney established himself as England's greatest ever goal-scorer when netting for the 50th time for his country against Switzerland. England became the first country to qualify for Euro 2016 when they thrashed San Marino on Saturday night. And with all the Home Nations’ aspirations addressed with varying degrees of success for now, and Rooney’s record registered for posterity, it’s hoped we’re not back to the no-score drawing bored tomorrow. It shouldn’t be, as there’s some cracking fixtures, mostly spread over Super Saturday. Goodison Park sees champions Chelsea arrive at Everton for the early game. Those beleaguered Bridge Blues badly need a win, but the Liverpudlian Blues also have much to prove to their faithful fans, Stone me. Stoke have not started well, only two points from four games and third from bottom - so a difficult visit to the Emirates isn’t the best place to recover. Arsenal are plodding their way back up the Prem, driving the Gooners mad on their way, as ever. One contender for Match of the Day is between a likely first and a very unlikely second place: at Selhurst Park (Chelsea’s conquerors last time out), Crystal Palace entertain mighty moneybags Man City - will £56m Kevin de Bruyne squeeze into the crowded Blues side? Alan Pardew’s high-flying Eagles

team probably didn’t even cost £50m in total, not even mentioning the value of Sterling… Newbies alert: Norwich are home to Bournemouth, what a breath of spring these two have brought to the Prem. Both clubs have four points from four games, both won one, drawn one, lost two and scored five, but Bournemouth have conceded two less than Norwich. The Canaries will be full of eastern promise against the ripening Cherries - game on! Watford v Swansea: three draws from four, one expected loss last time out at marauding Man City mean the third newby Watford need to score goals, and soon, only two managed so far. Fourth-placed swinging Swansea, won two, drawn two look fantastic and will take some stopping. At the Hawthorns, it looks like Tony Pulis has used all his management know how to keep the Peace and calm down his fiery young striker, Saido Berahino – the 22 year old who said he would never play for his chairman again. While wily Jeremy Peace would not play ball with Tottenham, Tony’s Terrier is now back in training and may well play against Southampton tomorrow. West Brom were buoyed by their one-nil M6 win against Stoke last time out to lift the Baggies off the bottom. Europa-freenow Saints celebrated by walloping Norwich three-nil last time, will that mean a rise back up the table?

BLOOD DATA OUT OF THE WANTED WORLD CUP

Paula Radcliffe says the pressure being put on her to release her blood test data is bordering on abuse. The marathon world record holder felt compelled to emphatically deny cheating during her career after becoming caught up in the doping allegations which have engulfed athletics.

Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny says he is "gutted" to be ruled out of the Rugby World Cup with a knee injury. Halfpenny, 26, ruptured anterior cruciate knee ligaments during Wales' 23-19 win over Italy. He thanked fans for their support and backed Wales to win the World Cup in his absence.
